It was a busy summer for the folks at Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) this year, as they worked with several landowners and counties on projects relating to wetland conservation and water management. The project pictured (right) was rebuilt by DUC, in cooperation with a local area landowner in Camrose County, to replace an existing water control structure. Providing the project’s heavy lifting, as shown here, is local contractor NuEdge Construction Ltd. as they backfill the new water control structure.

Daysland welcomes new doctor By Lori Larsen
The community of Daysland is happy to welcome a new family physician, Dr. Msikazi Langeni, to the roaster and the Daysland Health Care Centre is excited to have her on board. Originally from Bizanna, South Africa Dr. Langeni, husband Uviwe and 12-year-old son Sango Njenjani are delighted to now call Daysland home. Langeni began practicing medicine after graduating from medical school in 2008 from the University of Capetown (South Africa). “I have been a doctor for almost nine years. I spent my first four years in South Africa as a hospitalist as well as critical care hospitalist. Most of my time was spent in ICU as an in-house hospitalist.” In 2011 she decided to come to Canada to practice medicine, moving in 2013 after about a year and a half long process. “I have been in similar settings as Daysland since then and this is my third community and hopefully I wont be moving from here,” she said with a degree of aspiration. Prior to Daysland, Langeni practiced in physician group settings in the communities of Estevan and Turtleford, Saskatchewan. Langeni stated that Estevan was a bit bigger community with a larger number of physicians but
Turtleford was very similar to the size of Daysland “It was a little smaller community but had four physicians that did on call services. There was not as much as what Daysland offers, which is something I thought was great about here.” As a family physician by qualification, Langeni acquired some of Dr. Makiwani’s practice and patients and intends on providing the same quality care Dr. Makiwani gave. Langeni will also be accepting new patients. Outside of the family medical (clinic) practice Langeni has vivid interests in other medicine. “I love emergency medicine and on any given day I want to be in the ER. Of course in the clinic I definitely have a few interests including internal medicine and dermatology. “I have certification in dermoscopy which basically gives me the opportunity to assess moles and lesions on the skin to determine if they are cancerous or whatever, rather than just eyeballing them.” When asked why she chose Daysland to set up a practice Langeni said with certainty that she was literally the first person to apply for the position. “I love the small town settings and there is always ER access for me and it is pretty much identical to what I have done in all the instances that I have worked in Canada. It
has worked out very well for us as a family.” Langeni’s husband, Uviwe, has qualifications in animal production working in agriculture. “My son (Sango) loves the setting, he is always on his bike. He is very comfortable making friends.” Rural medicine
Langeni indicated that family medicine is not much different in any setting, but rural communities do present their own sets of challenges and benefits. “What I have learned so far about Daysland are there are quite a lot of services available for the elderly and they are quite impressive. It would be good to have the availability of long time care in town, we certainly have the population,” she added. “Of course as I get more into the system there will be things I will identify.”

Health and climate change By Dr. Itua Iriogbe Godson
Water everywhere
Water water everywhere–thankfully not in my basement. News about the wildfires in B.C. has been replaced by news about floods in Texas and Louisiana and in South Asia. I’m writing this a few days before you read it. In Texas and Louisiana, a few dozen people have died and thousands are displaced by floods caused by Hurricane Harvey. As of this day, monsoon rains are flooding a huge swath of India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan. More than 1,200 people have died. More than one-third of Bangladesh is believed to be under water. More than 3,000 villages are submerged. The floods are impacting an estimated 40 million people–more than the entire population of Canada. My reflections have been bouncing around… ***
Natural disasters–earthquakes and landslides; hurricanes and tornadoes, wildfires and volcanoes, tsunamis and floods (raging earth, air, fire and water)–remind us that Mother Nature is more powerful than all of us. If we humans think we can exploit and control her without consequences to ourselves, we are mistaken. It’s good to be reminded of that, lest we lose touch with our total dependence on the earth for humanity’s very existence. We are not more powerful than the planet we live on. ***
Natural disasters can be counted on to show humanity at its best and worst. What I’ve noticed is that there are always a few incidents that show us at our worst –looting and stealing; jacking up the prices of supplies, which are suddenly needed desperately (“Law of supply and demand; just good business,”–an indicator of why business is not the best vehicle to be trusted to look after the public good). What’s more important is that in times of disaster there are also incidents that show humanity at its best. We see bravery as people put their own lives at risk to help others; an outpouring of generosity; humanitarian aid from strangers; professionals and volunteers working in impossible circumstances to organize and carry out the logistics of dealing with the crisis. In times of natural disaster, there are always more incidents of humanity at its best than at its worst. We have the capacity to be a benevolent and competent species. It’s good to be reminded of that too.
Health and Climate Change: Is it a Covfefe or not? The average surface temperature of the Earth is expected to rise to four degrees Celsius over decades. Some areas of our daily living that have an impact on the climate include the following. Household energy utilization is responsible for CO emissions, accounting for a quarter of CO emissions from residential homes in some cities. Measures such as better ventilation, more house insulation, heat recovery, a switch to electric heating and a reduction in household temperature of one degree centigrade could lead to a 36 per cent reduction in CO2 emission. Health benefits of these measures could lead to improvement of indoor air quality and reduction in exposures to radon and carbon monoxide. The benefit of reduction /replacement of cook stoves in some lowincome countries would be substantial: indoor air pollution from poorly efficient cook stoves leads to a risk of acute respiratory tract infection in children younger than five years
and chronic respiratory and heart disease in adults older than 30 years. Globally, one million children could die every year of respiratory infections from the exposure to insufficient combustion of solid fuels. Transportation is responsible for a quarter of all fossil fuel greenhouse gas emissions. Using lower carbon emissions vehicles or relying on a more fuelefficient motor vehicle could lead to a 40 per cent cut in emissions. Using alternatives like more walking, cycling and less motor vehicle use would lead to heart disease and stroke reduction by 10 to 20 per cent, breast cancer (12 to 13 per cent), dementia (eight per cent) and depression (five per cent) respectively. Low carbon electricity generation by use of low coal utilization will reduce particle emissions by 2030 with an improvement in the general health of the populace. Agriculture and food production are responsible for 10 to 12 per cent of greenhouse emission, 80 per cent of these emissions which include methane, is emitted by ruminant animals. A 30 per cent fall in consumption of saturated fat from animals by adults
would reduce heart disease. Short lived greenhouse pollutants provide both warming and cooling effects globally. They include sulphate, organic and black carbon particles, aerosols, carbon monoxide, non-methane volatile organic compound, methane and nitrogen oxides. These products are from fuel consumption from households and transportations. These gases could lead to cardiopulmonary toxicity. Particles from fuel combustion has led to two million premature deaths in 2000 as per the WHO. Climate change and its effect on health is a reality and not a myth; concerted efforts by all levels of government and involvement of citizens are indicated to forestall the untoward effects of this man made environmental disequilibrium. Dr. Itua Iriogbe Godson has a practice at the Smith Clinic. He is a director, Occupational and Environmental Medical Association of Canada(OEMAC) and a member, Camrose Green Action Committee (opinion expressed here are personal and not those of any affiliated organizations).

On my way to another news report online, this letter to The Guardian, highly-regarded UK newspaper, catches my attention. “While I have the greatest sympathy for those who have lost friends, family, pets or property in the Texas floods, I am disgusted at the relative number of column inches and amounts of airtime devoted to its coverage. During precisely the same period, huge areas of Bangladesh, Nepal and India are suffering an even greater catastrophe, with 1,200 lives lost and millions made homeless. Let’s get some balance here. America is a rich country and will cope, despite inept leadership. Or are we saying that American lives are worth more?” Susan Howe, Ross on Wye, Herefordshire, The Guardian, Aug. 31. Hmm. A provocative question… ***
Other people’s misfortunes help put our day-to-day concerns in perspective. Whatever I might have been fretting about lately pales in comparison to thinking of what it would be like if my home were not just flooded but destroyed; if I had to get out of the place I live with just whatever I could carry; if I couldn’t count on safe drinking water or enough food… I hope I remember this the next time I’m feeling petulant because it’s the middle of Alberta winter and it’s cold and snowy and icy and dark 16 hours a day and everything is inconvenient and muttermuttermutterwhinewhine… Small things compared to hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis. Another good reminder. ***
I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send me an email at Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson. com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

The walk will begin at 2 p.m. with registration at 1 p.m. Thus far over $2,700 has been raised through on-line donations and with
other donations collected prior to and the day of the walk the $5,000 goal is within reach. “Programs such as Step n Stride show the caregivers and those afflicted with Parkinson disease that people really do care,” said Camrose resident Phil Buck who has was diagnosed with Parkinson disease in 2014. “With support there is hope for a better quality of life.” Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disease the result of dopamine, a
Daysland adds new doctor to hospital staff Continued from page 2 Langeni also opted to become part of the Camrose PCN group of physicians “I work better in teams and it is a more comprehensive patient based type of care and I am totally for that.”As for emergency medicine she noted. “I expect to see lots of medical (versus trauma) emergencies, especially in a Canadian setting, such as heart attacks, strokes and seizures that wont stop. Cardiac arrests are the one thing you want to be very well prepared for as a physician. Those are the things that I work in most of the time or preferably in an emergency set up.
“I am in the process of getting emergency ultrasound certification and I was glad to know that Daysland has an ultra sound.” After touring the hospital facilities in Daysland Langeni was impressed with the services offered. “What the hospital offers here is quite amazing that is something that attracted me, the things that get done here.” Outside of dedicated work hours Dr. Langeni hopes to continue getting involved in her other passion for music and the arts and enjoy watching her son experience his first ever Canadian winter.

Princess Project grants fairy tale wishes for grads in need By Lori Larsen Many high school girls start dreaming of their graduation dresses as soon as they enter Grade 9. The frills, the flounce, the fabric the fanfare. But for some the cost may be something that stands in the way of that dream. The Princess Project is a not-for-profit organization founded by Camrose Outreach School principal Laura Swanson that provides graduation dresses to grads in Camrose and area who might not otherwise be able to afford the sometimes expensive cost of purchasing one. “I realized we had girls at our school (Camrose Outreach School) who were accessing Cinderella’s Closet (notfor-profit organization that accepts donated grad dresses to give to those in need) up in Edmonton,” said Camrose Outreach School principal Laura Swanson. “I began to realize there is a need for this and if our school has a need then I am pretty sure that every high school has a need. People get a grad dress and wear it once then they hang them in a closet and likely never use them again.” Princess Project is a great opportunity to donate those unused grad dresses and not only free up some space in your closet but feel the gratitude of giving something to someone who will sincerely appreciate the gesture. The urgency to create a similar organization in Camrose became more apparent after Laura spoke with some local business people during a meeting for Downtown Camrose. “I was talking with someone about working at Camrose Outreach School what it is like, the needs of the students and ways people could help. Because it was grad season I was talking about Cinderella’s Closet and that our students (girls) were accessing that and how it would be great if we had something like that in Camrose.” “Tish (from Tish’s Fashions & Finery) said if I was willing to run the organization and find a location she had some dresses she would donate to get me started.” After inquiring with other organizations in Camrose to secure a location for the organization, Laura was gifted another donation from Tish. “The day I came to pick up the dresses in July, Tish brought me down to the basement below her shop, and we started gathering the dresses. Tish then offered the basement area as the location for this project, at least for the first year.” With that Laura was able to begin setting up the area, arranging racks of dresses, dedicating a fitting area, decorating and placing signage. “Staples in Camrose donated all of my signage, my wall decal and everything I needed in that respect, which has been huge,” said Laura. Through word of mouth dress donations have been coming in rapidly. “I have literally, in six weeks, gone from having nothing to everything, my signage, a location, lots of dresses. I am set up and ready to go for this fall and for this grad season,” Laura said with a great degree of excitement and gratitude to all the dress donors, Tish and Staples. Laura will be meeting the candidates for dresses at Princess Project, located between Tish’s and the empty lot beside the Provincial Building on the east side of 50 Street. To ensure dresses are available to grads who need them, a process has been put into place. “The school that the student is attending is required to write a letter indicating the student is in need and deserving of this opportunity,” explained Laura. After the letters of support have been looked over and approved the student will be required to set up an appointment to come to Princess Project to select a dress. Laura encourages the grads to bring along their mothers or others and enjoy the whole experience of trying on and picking out a beautiful dress. As a show of appreciation for the kind donation of dresses Laura will be taking a photo (with permission of the recipient) of the grad in her selected dress and sending a thank you note along with the photo to the donor. “I think it would be nice to know their dress was chosen and went to someone who really needed it.” Princess Project accepts dresses (long or short) befitting of graduation ceremonies in all sizes, colours and styles that are clean and in good repair and will also accept fashion accessories such as jewelry, handbags (clutches) and tiaras or other special occasion hairpieces, but no shoes. “I am also looking for women who are handy with a needle and thread,” smiled Laura. “Somebody who is willing to donate services for alterations.” Looking around the shop at the exquisite display of dresses and wonderful way Laura has turned the space into a charming boutique setting, one can not help but feel the same excitement Laura feels to be doing something special for those in need. To make an appointment or donation contact Laura via email at princessprojectcamrose@gmail.com.

Addressing sidewalk concerns By Lori Larsen
Maintaining the extensive sidewalk, curb and roadway systems in our City is an arduous task, but one it makes every effort to attend to, however, sometimes areas may slip between the cracks, figuratively speaking. During the Aug. 21 Committee of Whole meeting councillor Kevin Hycha and councillor David Ofrim raised concerns to city administration regarding the condition of some residential sidewalks and roadways, requesting specifics on the process residents should follow in bringing these concerns to the attention of the City. “There are several streets in Camrose that may or may not need attention but some sidewalks do need attention,” suggested councilor Hycha. “Is sidewalk reconditioning part of this budget (annual $3 million road rehabilitation budget)?” City of Camrose director of engineering Jeremy Enarson replied. “What we have in this budget is largely focused on the public roadways. Our current reviews regarding the condition assessment work by Tetra Tech in 2015 were focused on the asphalt components.” Enarson noted that sidewalks, back alleys, roadways would typically involve a local improvement and that any concerns regarding these types of locations should be brought to the City’s attention. “We are aware of many of them but if they are brought to our attention we can re-evaluate them and bring them to the attention of council.” Councillor Ofrim inquired as to the process residents need to follow in order to bring these concerns to the City. Enarson began by first explaining if there is an emergent issue it should be brought to the City’s
attention immediately. “If there is an immediate safety hazard potential such as the potential for a tripping hazard, we address those right away. “The City of Camrose has a policy that outlines our inspection frequency. We go around the city and do inspections on curbs as well as sidewalks. Due to current resources we don’t have the ability to do inspections on every single sidewalk in the City every year. “We typically have resources to get to about 20-25 per cent of the City in any given year. Our policy identifies that basically by the fourth or fifth year we will have gone around to every sidewalk in the city and done a full inspection and addressed any issues that need to be done.” Sidewalks in higher traffic areas are inspected on a more regular basis. For more information on the City of Camrose Sidewalk and Curb Inspection and Maintenance Policy visit camrose.civicweb. net/document/1089. Councillor Ofrim further inquired. “It is the responsibility of those on their street if their sidewalks are in bad shape, to come to the city and discuss it?” “Yes,” replied Enarson adding that some of those concerns are brought to the engineering department but that the public works department also handles concerns and do the actual inspections and maintenance. Enarson went on to explain the local improvement process. “Local improvements can either be initiated by the City or by the residents. “When initiated by the City, if it is something that is bad enough, they will actually put it onto the capital plan then present it to council at the time of budget, then council would have the opportunity to

review that project with respect to all the other potential demands within the city–all the other projects that are being considered at that time.” Local improvements initiated by residents follow a particular process. “Residents need to find out if the area to be replaced is for the entire block or entire neighbourhood. Then it is up to them to go to their neighbours and petition for a project, very similar to a local improvement. “Residents have the right to approach the City with a petition if they are in favour of doing a project. The petitioning rules must be followed. People also have the opportunity to petition against that project if the project was initiated by the City or neighbours.” For more information on Local Improvements
and petitioning process visit City of Camrose Local Improvements at www. c a m r o s e . c a / 8 3 /L o c a l Improvements. For a petition to be sufficient, two-third’s of registered property owners, representing half of the property values, must be on board. The same rules apply to when people are petitioning against projects. “If the petition in favour of a local improvement is valid then council has no choice but to schedule that project in the next three years.” For more information on local improvements, petitioning process or if you have any concerns about sidewalks, curbs or roadways in your area contact the City of Camrose infrastructure and planning (public works or engineering) at 780-672-4428.
Rural transportation services has been in the forefront of many Albertans minds living and working in rural communities seeking viable options to transportation in and out of rural settings. On Saturday, Sept. 23, you are invited to join in the conversation at the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus. Minister of transportation Brian Mason will be in attendance during the Rural Transportation Information Day II. Other guests during the event include Dr. Ross Danyluk, executive director Strategy and Policy Branch Transportation Alberta, Martin Bean, chief administrative officer Bow Valley Regional Transit Services Commission, City of Camrose councillor Max Lindstrand speaking on the Camrose Community Bus and Dr. Peter Berg with Alberta Rural Development Network (ARDN). The day begins at 9 a.m. with morning prayers by indigenous elders followed by registration, music and coffee at 9:30 a.m. With a goal to find solutions to the issue of rural transportation the Association for Life-wide Living (ALL) has partnered with ARDN in developing the Battle River Bus (BRB), a regional transportation option for the Battle River Region. Operating on an oncall basis the BRB runs once or twice a week transporting residents of smaller communities in the Battle River region to and from Camrose for the day enabling them to access the amenities of the city such as shopping, continuing education, libraries and tourism opportunities. Reaching beyond this service the long-term vision of the BRB is to eventually provide a system that interconnects the entire region and includes a daily service that would allow riders to access employment as well as services. Camrose County Since 1938, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) has worked with landowners, government, industry and other organizations to protect, restore and manage wetlands in Alberta. In Camrose County, DUC has been active on many fronts. We strive to balance conservation with responsible land use to ensure that our environment supports the interests and activities of everyone, whether they live, work or play on the farm or in town. Because, after all, wetlands connect all of us.

Shedding light on the health of Camrose Creek watershed
By the numbers in Camrose County Habitat projects
It’s a study that matters to all Albertans, especially those in and around the Camrose area.
Dollars invested in DUC $13 million habitat projects since 1969
In the heart of Camrose County, DUC in cooperation with the University of Saskatchewan is conducting a three-year research project in the Camrose Creek watershed, a tributary of the Battle River, to help quantify links between wetlands and wetland drainage on water quantity and water quality. The study will provide indepth data to reveal what is happening in the prairie pothole region in terms of water quality, water quantity and overall wetland health. Closer to home, the study will also provide information to help county and city planners set objectives for wetland conservation and restoration that will help achieve local priorities such as managing and improving water quality in Dried Meat Lake, Camrose’s water source. A series of metering and water monitoring stations set up along Camrose Creek and its tributaries is capture flow data during every runoff event. DUC’s research team is also collecting water samples that will be analyzed for quality. The three-year project is currently in its final year. The results will also help find a balance between the need for wetland conservation and the needs of Alberta land users.
Take it from those who know
Wetland restoration offers a slough of benefits for farmers & ranchers Cattle producers Barry and Charmaine Ronsko know firsthand the value of restored wetlands and working with DUC. The husband and wife duo farm near Camrose, Alta., have taken advantage of DUC’s Revolving Land Conservation Program as well as Wetland Restoration Conservation Easements for their operation. And they’re glad they did. The restored wetlands on Ronsko’s land have yielded many benefits. In addition to receiving financial compensation, they have additional sources of stock water and grazing areas for their cattle. The restored wetlands have also enhanced the natural landscape which provides more habitat area for wildlife. The Ronskos are pleased to know that the naturalized areas protected by conservation easements will remain on the landscape into perpetuity for all to enjoy.
DUC has utilized more than 75 active suppliers and contractors from the local Camrose area to provide millions of dollars worth of materials, services and work for wetland restoration and conservation projects during the last decade.

Time to think about daylight savings
WHO can
I count on?
By Murray Green
A Private Member’s Bill to eliminate Daylight Saving Time and Start Alberta Standard Time has created lengthy debate. After consulting with Albertans, Thomas Dang, MLA for Edmonton South West introduced Bill 203: Alberta Standard Time Act in the Legislature to amend the Daylight Saving Time Act to provide the stability for parents, families, employers and working Albertans are asking for. On Sept. 12, there will be public hearings to review Bill 203–Alberta Standard Time Act. A public meeting will be held at the Edmonton Federal Building, 2nd floor, 9820-107 Street, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. While all pubic persons may attend, you must register if you wish to make a presentation. Phone 1-780-415-2876 to book a presentation, or for more information. “I’ve been hearing from families, parents with young children, and Albertans that stopping the practice of changing our clocks will make their lives better,” said MLA Dang. “The Alberta Standard Time Act creates one time zone for all Albertans, providing stability for families and making life better for Albertans.” Nearly 26,000 Albertans provided input through the survey and hundreds more provided feedback through email, phone, and our in person town hall. The results are clear, over 80 per cent of Albertans want one time year round. This includes parents of young children, who find it difficult to maintain a routine for the healthy development of their children; seniors, farmers and shift workers. “The debate is over whether we want more daylight in the morning or in the evening,” said Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA Bruce Hinkley. MLA Dang continues to look forward to what Albertans have to say on the matter, which is why the public hearings are taking place across the province.

Councillor Throndson offers background views on council By Lori Larsen
On Oct. 16, residents of Camrose will be going to the polls to check boxes in votes for mayor and eight City council members, positions within our City that occupy a great deal of commitment and responsibility. Some of the present councillors answered a few questions about their experiences in an effort to enlighten residents about the duty of sitting on City council. In speaking with councillor, Wayne Throndson, his responses were as follows. What has your experience on council taught you about Camrose, the community and municipal governance? “After three terms on council, it is hard to say what more I have learned
this last term, but almost every day my belief that Camrose is a wonderful place to live, filled with caring citizens is reaffirmed. “It never ceases to amaze me the interest and passion the residents of Camrose have in their community.” What has been the most rewarding and one of the most challenging parts of being on council? “This has been a very interesting three-and-ahalf years to be on council,” remarked Wayne. “The most rewarding part of being a councillor is seeing the decisions that we make hopefully improving the lives of the citizens of Camrose. “I think a great deal has been accomplished during this term and I would like to point out two.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster City of Camrose councillor Wayne Throndson brings his knowledge of law to the council table.
“The first would be the adoption of business principles as part of the budgeting process. There was some criticism when the idea was first raised, but I think that was largely due to a misunderstanding as to what was being proposed. We are not running the City as a business but rather, especially during budget deliberations, using some of the principles of running a business.” Wayne continued, “Prior to the presentation of the draft budget, departments are required to provide ‘business cases’ to support funding requests. Our administration and the departments have done a fantastic job and the last budget cycle was the smoothest in my three terms on council.” The second accomplishment to which Wayne referred was the establishment of the community bus. “Our ability to put the community bus into operation was due to the generosity of Mayor Mayer who purchased the bus for the City. The bus has proven to be quite successful and, coupled with the taxi token program, has enabled a significant number of people to access transportation who otherwise would have difficulties getting around the City. “In terms of challenges, one of the hardest things is having to say ‘no’ to some requests we receive. Wayne explained that city councils are closest to the truest form of democracy. “Citizens can pick up the phone and talk to any councillor they choose, they can meet with a councillor face to face, attend council meetings and even have the ability to discuss issues or raise concerns at a meeting. “That doesn’t mean, how-
ever, that we can always solve their concerns.” What do you feel are the most important roles of a councillor? “Council has a number of roles, but one of the most important would be to set the strategic direction for the City for the next five, 10 and even 20 years. “Of course, I am admittedly biased, having been born and raised here,” smiled Wayne, “But I believe Camrose is one of the best cities in which to live and raise a family and its council’s role to ensure that continues. Council is also the ‘eyes and ears’ for administration and can pass on concerns and the occasional compliment. “It is also important for a councillor to understand their role and resist the urge to micromanage and interfere with the role of administration. At the same time though, a councillor must not shy away from challenging administration and the recommendations they bring to council. What do you think contributes to a balanced perspective on council? “Everyone who sits on council has his or her unique perspective on issues. We are lucky with the present council to have diversity with councillors of different ages from various businesses to retirees. Everyone who has an opinion is welcome to share their thoughts and certainly my mind has been changed on an issue after hearing different points of view. “It is also helpful that the mayor encourages a free flow of dialogue during our meetings,” added Wayne. What commitments,
including time, can a person expect as a City councillor? “Typically, committee of the whole and regular council meetings are held twice a month and can run on average of four hours. Agendas and information packages come out a few days before, so in terms of preparation for a meeting, that can take a couple of hours. “The job of councillor can take additional time depending on what committee’s individual councilors are on and of course, additional time is required during budget deliberations. It is by no means a full-time job and often times there is some degree of flexibility as to the timing of meetings. “As a business person, I have appreciated the Mayor’s decision to have committee of the whole meetings the same day as regular council meetings, which makes scheduling at work much easier.” What advice would you give to anyone considering running for council? “Firstly, run for the right reason – you have to have a genuine interest in making sure the City of Camrose remains a great place to live. Don’t run if you have one or two pet peeves that you want to see changed. “Secondly, don’t be intimidated by the process or what the job entails. Remember that every councillor at one time was a rookie and was facing the same uncertainties as you. You will, though, have lots of help from administration and your fellow councillors. “It can be challenging but also a rewarding and enjoyable job.” On a final note, Wayne said he would be running for council again for the upcoming election.
Keeping our waters safe for everyone to use By Lori Larsen As the season for watersports winds down Camrose Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch (FWEB) and Camrose RCMP want to remind residents that safety on the water should be a number one priority for all pleasure craft users. On Aug. 26/27 Camrose FWEB and RCMP partnered to conduct watercraft inspections on Driedmeat Lake in an effort to ensure, not only compliance with laws and regulations, but that recreation remains safe and enjoyable for everybody. “For the most part, the safety inspections went very well with a high compliance rate,” said Camrose District Fish and Wildlife officer (FWEB) Lorne Rinkel. During the inspection officers were checking for:
pleasure craft operator’s licenses and vessel registrations; safety equipment including certified life jackets for each occupant, a buoyant heaving line, at least one oar, operational flash lights, fire extinguishers for vessels with inboard engines, and noise making/ signaling devices and the presence of alcohol on board. “Of the numerous vessels checked, approximately 90 per cent were found to be in contravention of the Liquor Control Act and several violation tickets were issued for either having liquor in a public place (on the waterbody), open liquor in a motor vehicle (vessel) or by having occupant’s unlawfully consuming liquor in a vehicle (vessel),” noted Rinkel. “Persons operating a watercraft were reminded that Criminal Code
Impaired Operation laws apply on waterbodies and that people found to have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .05 or higher may be subject to suspensions, arrest, and prosecution, seizure of the watercraft and loss of their motor vehicle operator’s licenses if convicted,” said Rinkel. Making smart choices while enjoying the remainder of the summer and the warm fall can save you the costs of criminal prosecution and more importantly, can save lives. Rinkel added that thus far this summer there have been 17 drownings in Alberta. If you see or suspect someone may be using watercrafts in an unsafe or unlawful manner contact the Camrose FWEB at Report a Poacher 1-800642-3800 or Camrose RCMP at 780-672-3342.
Submitted Photo Camrose Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch and Camrose RCMP teamed up on Aug. 26 and 27 to conduct watercraft inspections on Driedmeat Lake. Several charges were laid including unlawfully consuming liquor in a motor vehicle (vessel.)

Enter into my life, Beth Moore.” Moore is an author and Bible teacher who founded her own ministry group and has written and taught numerous Bible studies. Olijnyk joins Veselka dance staff Camrose Veselka Ukrainian Dancers added new instructor Kelsey Olijnyk for the 2017-18 season. Kelsey joins returning instructor Kassandra Stanton for a dynamic season for the club. “Camrose Veselka has been a strong community organization for over 32 years, performing to delighted audiences in Camrose and surrounding area,” said club president Kyla Joyce. “We are excited about the addition of Kelsey to our instructor team and the amount of expertise and devotion to the art of Ukrainian dance that she brings with her. Kelsey has planned an exceptional season of creativity for our growing club.” Kelsey’s passion and love for Ukrainian dance started at a young age. She grew up dancing throughout rural Alberta before joining Volya Studio. After spending three years with Volya Studio, Kelsey joined the Nadiya Dance Ensemble where she danced for 10 years. In her quest to continue to grow as a dancer Kelsey joined the Volya Ukrainian Dance Ensemble in 2010. Kelsey has been teaching Ukrainian dance throughout the province of Alberta since 2005. She has also been a guest choreographer for dance groups in Saskatchewan and Cleveland, Ohio. Kelsey is the artistic director of the Sopilka Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, assistant artistic director of the

Together we will accomplish many great things over the year and I look forward to seeing their love of Ukrainian dance blossom and grow.” Returning instructor Kassandra was born in Westlock and grew up on an acreage outside of the town of Athabasca. Following the suit of her siblings, Kassandra entered Ukrainian dance at the age of five and has continued to dance ever since. Camrose Veselka Ukrainian Dancers are busy fundraising for a cultural and educational tour to Ukraine next summer. “We greatly appreciate the support of the community and if an organization needs help for upcoming events, we would

be happy to provide workers to supplement our fundraising goals,” said Stacy Padilla, chair of CVUDS Travel Group. “Our goal is to give our senior dancers the opportunity to see first-hand the regions that are represented in the dances they perform.” Finding those connections brings to reality the many reasons Camrose Veselka strives to carry on these traditions. “Ukrainian Dance is fun for everyone” said Kyla. “We have students from ages four to adult and you don’t have to be Ukrainian to join. We are a fun, family friendly organization that give our students an opportunity to enjoy the physical benefits of dance while also learning about culture and traditions.” Along with participating in the local events like Festival of Trees and Culture FUZE Dance Festival, Camrose Veselka annually hosts Malanka, a Ukrainian New Year’s Celebration in January at the CRE and a year-end concert celebrating Ukrainian Dance at the Lougheed Centre in April. Concert honours Merle Haggard’s music By Murray Green
Canadian country music performer Jess Lee will be highlighting the life of Merle Haggard, who died just last year. The show called “The Legend of The Hag” will be at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Sept. 15 beginning 7:30 p.m. Haggard is the sum of what true country music was, is and should be. Lee and his band will take you on a journey through Haggard’s incredible life and times through stories and songs. In a career that spanned six decades, Haggard rose from poverty and prison to international fame through his songs about outlaws, underdogs, the heartbroken and the hard-living. Haggard wrote songs for the working class to drink to, dance to and cry to. Haggard’s life echoed the songs he sang, he was born poor, raised in a converted railway boxcar and turned 21 in prison before turning his life around to become a country music hero. He notched 40 No. 1 hits including ”Working Man Blues,” “Mama Tried,” “Silver Wings” and one of the most famous country songs of all time “Okie From Muskogee.” Lee will share personal stories passed on to him while working with Haggard’s band mate, Grammy award-winning guitar player Redd Volkaert. “The Legend of The Hag “is a must-see multi media performance for Haggard fans and music fans alike. Lee’s voice will have audiences doing a double take, as it emulates the rich, smooth, baritone sound of Merle’s flawlessly. He is a JUNO-nominated singer who rose to fame as the lead singer of the acclaimed Midnite Rodeo Band. Signed to RCA records, the group charted 14 singles on the Canadian country charts in the 1980s. The group also picked up nominations for Group Of The Year at both the JUNO Awards and the Canadian Country Music Association awards. Lee went on to a successful solo career with five Canadian chart hits including the No. 1 song “Crowhill Road.” He was inducted into the BCCAMA Hall of Fame in 2011.

Brewhouse golf tournament benefits Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation By Murray Green
T he Ca nad ia n Brewhouse Camrose will be holding its fifth annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Silver Creek Golf Club in New Norway on Saturday, Sept. 16. “This is a great opportunity to support a very worthy cause, play some golf, mingle with and make new friends, and celebrate the end of summer with our Brew Crew,” said Kimberly Bateman, manager of the Brewhouse. Last year, about 140 golfers participated in the 18-hole tournament. amazing organization that helps thousands of children in need. All proceeds from the registration fee and 50/50 will go to the Stollery,” added Kimberly. “Each year we grow the tournament bigger and better and raise as much money as possible for the charity.” Golfers will be bused from the Brewhouse to New Norway for a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Registration takes place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Players can sign up individually, or as a four member team. Prizes and silent auctions items will be part of the fun. Altameda launches the Roots season By Murray Green
Rose City Roots Music Society’s first show of the fall will include Altameda from Edmonton on Sept. 15 at the Bailey Theatre beginning at 8 p.m. When singer-songwriter Troy Snaterse went to the studio to record he grabbed musicians to help out and that quickly formed into a group. Despite the fourpiece band members finding their roots in various
genres, they felt compelled to blend their individual styles with the Canadiana sound that shaped their younger years. The country rock sound is a hit with westerners. During the sessions for the group’s debut last year, “Dirty Rain,” it was clear that the band felt a chemistry that only arrives through shared experiences and they are now on tour.
Madeline is a talented 20-year-old singersongwriter with a passion for folk, acoustic, and alternative music. She enjoys playing originals and covers of all kinds.

BRCF awards grant to CCHS band program The Battle River Community Foundation awarded grants to Battle River School Division. The grants are from income from the Joyce Lohner Memorial Fund and the PJ Bailey Memorial Fund. The Joyce Lohner Memorial Fund was established by Leon Lohner to assist with the costs of participating in band programs in Camrose schools. The PJ Bailey Memorial Fund was established by Bob and Val Bailey in memory PJ, their son. The Fund allows the Baileys to recommend funding charitable programs to the Foundation Board. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support programs like these in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $4,865,000 to support community facilities and programs such as the Battle River School Division band and music programs.

Parfett remembers Hawaiian hey days By Murray Green
Harold Parfett hasn’t met a dragster he didn’t like. The Bittern Lake area Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame member has seen some of the best racers and cars go through North America over the years. In 1966, Harold attended his first drag race in Edmonton at the age of 15. That changed his life forever. He met famous race car driver Don Garlits, who told him that if he worked hard, that one day he could own his own race car. That encounter skyrocketed Harold’s passion for race cars and drag racing. There is one special car that stands out on the track. “The Hawaiian dragster and owner Roland Leong were at the best in the mid-60s,” said Harold Parfett, who has his car in his collection of dragsters. “That car could burn rubber the distance of the track at 200 miles an hour,” he said as his eyes lit up. The Hawaiian swept the National Hot Rod Association’s two National Events, the Winternationals at the Pomona Fairgrounds and the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, two years consecutively, in 1965 and again in 1966. This feat by Leong’s entries was accomplished with two different drivers, as Don “the Snake” Prudhomme scored the back-to-back victories in 1965, followed by Mike Snively in 1966. In 1967, Leong failed to three-peat at Pomona or Indianapolis, but did triumph that year at two popular independent drag races, the notoriously fierce March Meet in Bakersfield and the Hot Rod Magazine Championships in Riverside, CA. “I was looking for a Hot Rod magazine from 1965 with the Hawaiian featured in it when I was in California racing. I was searching for hours and finally found one that I bought for $5. It was the second one for my collection, because I wanted a back-up one in case something ever happened to it,” recalled Harold. “Wouldn’t
BLUE HAWAIIAN

you know it, Don Prudhomme, 50 years later, pulls up in a golf cart and was taking a cell phone call right beside me. When he got off his cell phone, I said Don, I’m wondering if I could get you to sign the magazine. So there it is, his signature 50 years after the magazine came out. I’ve got a frame being made for that.” The aluminum built car was ahead of its time with a light weight build and extreme power. “Leong owned the car, but he couldn’t really drive. His mom told him he couldn’t drive, so he didn’t. Instead he hired Don and he went on to become famous.” How did Harold end up with this world famous car? In 2014, Canadian drag racer Ron Hodgson hired Leong to tune the Troy Lee Designs Nitro Funny Car driven by Tim Boychuk, for competition in the NHRA Heritage Series. “Boychuk and Hodgson owned the car and a
year later the team broke up and things were being divided. I didn’t care about their motorhome or trailer, all I wanted to know is what was going to happen to the Hawaiian,” shared Harold. “They told me they sent it to auction. If only I had known. I would love to have that car. Anyways, I went to the auction, and even with Leong and Prudhomme on stage, it didn’t meet the reserve bid,” Harold explained further. “I told them I will make an offer. Tim and Ron didn’t really want it and they needed money to work things out, so I got the Hawaiian. It was my lucky day.” The blue dragster is still runable today. “It can’t be used for racing because they are not safe enough anymore. The standards have changed. I could run it at the track, but the paint job is too valuable. It had to be painted in California because of the heavy metallic paint. There is a lot of history in that car.”
Harold put on a set of slicks from 1965 that were never used in racing. “Even the tires are from 1965. The car is back exactly like it was back in the day. It is not very comfortable to
drive. It is a tight spot, especially for a 6’2” driver like Don. The seat is not in a good position if the rear end was ever to blow,” added Harold. Continued on page 29

Brian has been involved with CAFCL for many years in different volunteer capacities from crisis debriefing, to oneto-one counselling, to taking on the role of emcee of the Charity Auction. Brian kept the auction on track and assisted in raising money for CAFCL, an organization he knows assists others. Bev Davis was honoured as the CAFCL Individual Donor Champion. As a proud mother of a CAFCL individual, Bev has made financial donations to CAFCL over the years. Along with these financial contributions, Bev has also made and donated quilts to the CAFCL Charity Auction. The $2,500 Human Services Scholarship was awarded to Katelyn Boyd, an employee with CAFCL since 2016. Katelyn has been accepted into the Thanatology (Death Studies) – A Practical Approach Course at Centennial College through distance learning. Graduates of this unique program will have the skills and experience to better understand, support and care for those facing or coping with death. The scholarship award is given annually to a student enrolled in a disabilities field or a related field of study such as special education, psychology, sociology and nursing. Public invited to attend Augustana workshops By Lori Larsen
The University of Alberta Augustana Campus invites members of the community to join in on a series of workshops in the Building Capacity for Reconciliation program beginning Sept. 29. “The workshops are intended to provide people participating with some basic background and understanding about Residential Schools, the histories of Indigenous peoples in Canada, and current impacts and experiences as well,” said Megan Caldwell, University of Alberta Augustana Campus interim aboriginal students’ office coordinator.
“We live in a country that has a long road ahead of itself if the goal of reconciliation is to be truly met, and the workshops were developed in part to help Augustana graduates leave our campus with greater understanding and a level of personal capacity for engaging in these topics and issues throughout their professional and personal lives.” Last year, the program was successful in welcoming students, staff and faculty to attend the workshops and now this year Augustana has opened the workshops to anyone from Camrose and surrounding area who may be interest-
ed in learning more about Indigenous peoples of Canada. “This year, we are excited to include members of the public for two reasons,” said Caldwell. “First, from events that we have hosted at Augustana that are open to the public, including portions of two of last year’s workshops, we know that there are many people in Camrose and the wider area who want to learn more about the Indigenous peoples of Canada and to engage in meaningful discussion on these topics. “Secondly, it will grow the conversations we are having here on campus to include our neighbours in these workshops, as their different experiences and perspectives can only serve to increase our understanding of what reconciliation might look like.” Registered participants will be eligible to receive a co-curricular certificate in Building Capacity for Reconciliation from Augustana. Unregistered participants are also welcome to attend the series of presentations that are part of the program. The workshops will be held once a month, in the evening, from September to March (except December), and will be approximately one and a half hours long.
Following each presentation registered participants will meet as a group to discuss that particular sessions topic. Topics will be relevant to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final report and 94 Calls to Action from a Canadian and local perspective. The six topics include Reconciliation, Residential Schools and History, Indigenous Governance, Education, Language and Community, and, Culture and Ceremony. Grand Chief Wilton Littlechild, TRC commissioner, who will kick off the program on Sept. 29 speaking about his vision for reconciliation in Canada. The workshops will conclude with a celebratory Round Dance on March 16, 2018. Registrations will be open until 4 p.m. Sept. 13. Due to the nature of the workshops, registration is limited and spaces for staff, faculty, students, and community members are capped by group. Public participation for the workshops will be on a costrecovery basis. For more information (including a registration form) visit the website: at https://www.ualberta.ca/ augustana/services/aso/ workshops.

“The driver had his hand on the brake up to 100 mph and then he let go and drove with two hands after that. If something ever went wrong they didn’t have time to put their hand on the brake. It had to be there already. That fractions of a second difference was important. Dragsters were dangerous to drive and this car was fortunate to survive all these years. They don’t even have front brakes. Going fast was important and stopping was really hard. They tell me the driver had to look 300 feet ahead of them. That is the only way you could drive them.” Any contact with the wall spelt disaster, both for the driver and the owner. The car sported a 392 hemi with a blower on it. “If you wanted to go that
fast, you had to use a hemi engine. I believe the year after they won in 1965, they came out with a 426 hemi. That motor was more difficult to run then his 392. That was the biggest motor they had back in the day. The 392 was the best motor using nitro and blowers.” The cars were pushed onto the track to start and didn’t have radiators in them, so when they were fired up, they were ready to race. “They could build a motor in 55 minutes and then they were able to race every two hours. The motor would be too hot to take apart and fix. You could make some money back then because people would pay to see cars go 200 mph in seven seconds in 1965. They were amazing cars. Drivers were mak-

City Chase amazing race is on By Lori Larsen
Residents, over the age of 16 years, are invited to come out on Sept. 16 and join, Camrose’s own version of an amazing race, the Camrose City Chase. Registration on the day of the chase will take place at noon behind Tish’s Fashions & Finery (489550 Street) the chase itself will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. All proceeds from the race will be donated to Camrose Open Door. “The Open Door is a fantastic organization that supports local youth in their time of need,” said one of the event organizers Christine Dietz. “The Camrose City Chase is a fun way to get people together and support these youth.” After attending a Coffee and Desserts Thank You hosted by the Open Door (Camrose) as a way of thanking businesses and individuals for donating, Dietz was able to see and hear the impact community support has on these youth in need. “We sat and listened to a story of a young girl who never had a fixed address and another story of a youth who spent his nights (even in winter) in Camrose sleeping in unlocked cars. “I think of how lucky my own children, and most children I know are, and how they would never have to live like that, just trying to survive.” Dietz went on to say that she can see how the Open Door is like a form of parenting for these youth, where their real parents have not been able to step up for some reason or another. “These youth deserve our help. You don’t have to send donations far to help a child.” Dietz encourages Camrose residents to enter a team in the City Race, volunteer or donate to The Camrose Open Door. Teams of four will race off to 12 venues and compete in 12 challenges. Contestants will need to use their own vehicle for the race and prizes will be awarded to teams for the best costumes. The event is only taking 20 teams and the last day to register is Friday, Sept. 8. Participants must be at least 16 years of age. For more information or to register for the City Race visit www.camrose. ca/citychase. For more information on the Open Door or how you can donate to the Open Door visit www. camroseopendoor.com.

Q. A.
Are all BRCF funds the same?
No! The Foundation offers seven different types of funds, one of which can certainly be tailored to suit your personal philanthropy needs. The most general type is a “Community Fund”, which allows the BRCF Grants Committee of the day to choose projects that address emerging needs throughout the area served.

Joseph ( Joe) Cramer 1931 ~ 2012 The moment that you left me, My heart was split in two. One side was filled with memories, The other side died with you. I often lay awake at night When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down Memory Lane With tears upon my cheek. Remembering you is easy, I do it every day. But missing you is a heartache That never goes away. I hold you tight within my heart, And there you will remain. You see, life has gone on without you, But will never be the same. Forever in our hearts, Paula and the Cramer and Willms families

Clarence Huebner November 4, 1934 ~ August 25, 2017 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Clarence A. Huebner. He was born on November 4, 1934, the second youngest child of nine, to Adolph and Martha Huebner on the family farm near Hay Lakes Alberta. He passed away, at his home on August 25, 2017 at the age of 82 years. He was predeceased by his wife Joanne Lofgren Huebner, Noelle Ramey, parents and six siblings. He is survived by his son Darren Huebner; daughter Clarann; son-in-law, Stephen Petersen; and grandchildren Matthew and Benjamin Petersen. He is also survived by two siblings, Robert Huebner (Manitoba) and Lillian Snell (Camrose) as well as numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Dad lived and worked most of his life on the family farm and on his retirement acreage near Hay Lakes. He was a kind, gentle hearted man who did everything he could to bless the lives of those he loved. He carried on his father’s tradition of making furniture and doing woodworking in his spare time. Until the later years he was constantly inventing, manufacturing or modifying equipment to suit his, or his loved ones’ needs. He built a tree mover and spent many a day digging up, moving and watering trees. He was blessed to do much travelling with the women in his life and with his son Darren. After retirement, he enjoyed golfing and skiing with his grandsons and friends and in the later years he treasured his time playing pool with the guys on Tuesdays and Thursdays. His strongest desire was to avoid moving to town and to pass away in his own home so God granted these desires of his heart which give us, the family, some comfort. There was nothing Dad loved more than spending time with his family and he treasured the breakfasts that Darren made for him many mornings, and the family suppers that were enjoyed on most Sundays. We wish these traditions would never end but we pray that he is now enjoying eternal life, reunited with mom and others who have preceded him. A Funeral Service was held at 10:00 am, Saturday, September 2, 2017 from Wilhelmina Lutheran Church with Rev. Ron Chetney officiating. Inurnment has taken place in the Wilhelmina Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to Wilhelmina Lutheran Church, or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. FASD Awareness Teaching the value of giving back By Lori Larsen The classrooms are once again alive with activity. Some students moving about the room chatting with friends they haven’t for a while, others seemingly lost unsure if this is the right room and others hovering around the front desk anxious for the teacher to take notice that they have returned. Amidst it all teacher Kristy Smith of Our Lady Mount Pleasant smiles broadly, the excitement of the new and familiar faces, the constant hum of voices and the somewhat organized confusion, literally makes her tick.
ment classes to teachers. I did one yesterday at a Wetaskiwin school teaching indigenous education.” She is also the vicepresident (Camrose) of the ATA Local 21 (Elk Island Catholic Teachers.) It is apparent that maintaining quality in teaching and to never stop learning is extremely important to her. “The most important lesson a teacher can give to their students is to be lifelong learners. We also need to equip these students with the skills to be critical thinkers.” Aside from promoting learning, Kristy is also a strong advocate of volun-
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Our Lady Mount Pleasant teacher Kristy Smith gears up for another school year and encouraging students to do their part by giving back.
In her fifth year at OLMP, Kristy teaches CTS (Career and Technology Studies) high school art, social studies and humanities. “I have been teaching for just over 10 years and did my post secondary education at the University of Lethbridge,” said Kristy. After completing her studies Kristy came back to Camrose, where she was born and raised, and secured a teaching position. “I taught at Charlie Killam school for two years then at the Comp (CCHS) for about three years and now I have been here for five years. “I am a teacher because I love to learn,” she said passionately. “I learn from my students all the time. When they ask questions and I can dive into an area that I have never looked at before, then learning becomes so much fun.” Constantly challenging herself to add to her bank of knowledge, Kristy accepted a position as one of only 50 teachers in the province working with the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) as an associate instructor. “We go and give professional develop-
teerism and strives to demonstrate to her students the importance of community and giving back. “When I came to OLMP I said I would help with the Leadership Club. Then students came to me and said they wanted to go on a service trip so I reached out to groups in community that had these programs.” The result of which include the Mustard Seed (Edmonton) initiative, driven by students, to raise money for the homeless. “I simply guide them to reach whatever goal they want to reach,” said Kristy humbly. With Kristy’s guidance the Leadership students have reached even further and have given helping hands to Camrose Habitat for Humanity and other organizations and causes in Camrose. “The most significant thing is to teach students the importance of helping others.” Recognizing the immeasurable value the Leadership Club had on, not only students, but the community, the school soon developed it into an actual class. Kristy’s work doesn’t stop at the doors of OLMP. Outside of the classroom
she is wife to Travis, devoted mom to four-month-old Bryn and two-year-old Addison and a tireless volunteer. She is the second vicepresident on the Camrose Association for Community Living board. “With encouragement from Jim Ofrim (principal of Camrose Composite High School at the time) I started working with special needs students. I remember him saying ‘Kristy, all you have to do is show them love.’ “I loved the experience, building relationships with the special needs students.” So for Kristy, being part of the board was a natural fit and another way she could continue learning. As chair of Camrose Kidsport Kristy, once again, finds a channel for her unwavering devotion to the betterment of children and her abundant energy. “It fits with what I do. I coach and I teach and I can identify children who could benefit from sports if they could afford it.” Not to mention it was a wonderful way for her to pay tribute to her late grandfather Ray Brown who strongly believed sports benefitted every child. “No child should be left to the lottery of life and not be given opportunities. It is up to people who do have the time, energy and knowledge to help to get involved and volunteer.” Commending the group of volunteers and the board members for Kidsport Kristy adds, “The best thing about Kidsport is we work really hard to ensure that every penny that is donated to Camrose Kidsport goes to kids in Camrose and Camrose County.” The organization works at next to no cost so that funds raised are put where they belong, funding children that may not have the fortune to play organized sports. On a final note, Kristy added her continued education at the Masters level was on wholistic education. “I really believe in a well rounded student.” She added how important it is to cultivate all aspects of the self whether that be physical or spiritual. “And in the Catholic school system I can talk to students. We can have those conversations about spiritual self.” The key lessons Kristy teaches and lives by, respect one another, be a lifelong learner and never stop pursuing happiness. On Aug. 22, in City council chambers Mayor Norm Mayer proclaimed Sept. 9 to be FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) Awareness Day, in Camrose. During the Week of Sept. 9 organizations in Camrose such as The Open Door, Camrose Association for Community Living, McMan Youth Family and Community Services Association and Prairie Central FASD Association will be hosting events to help create awareness and provided a better understanding of FASD. On Sept. 7, at 1 p.m. residents are invited to a walk around Mirror Lake, starting at the Bill Fowler Centre to kick off FASD Awareness. The walk will be followed by refreshments donated by Safeway and Boston Pizza. “No amount of alcohol has been found to be safe in pregnancy,” said trainer and educator with Prairie Central FASD Association Jen Willes. The FASD Bell Concordance encourages all faith organizations and buildings with bells around the world to ring their bells on Sept. 9 at 9:09 a.m. to mark the “magic minute” for FASD Awareness.
tion deficits and behaviour disorders. Individuals with FASD are also subject to social disorders such as disrupted school experiences, juvenile delinquency, homelessness, mental health and substance abuse issues, unemployment and criminal behaviour. The first line of defence against the effects of FASD is providing women and their partners with proper information and supporting parents, caregivers, professionals and all individuals impacted by FASD. Throughout September in Central Alberta people will be wearing the FASD Knot, a symbol designed in memory of Reynold Abel Dorris, (1968-91) whose father Michael Dorris (1945-97) wrote the book “The Broken Cord”, a perspective on the author’s struggle to understand and deal with his adopted son’s (Abel) health and learning problems as a result of FASD. The circle in the knot symbolizes the womb, a baby’s head, the human brain, the earth and the network of people who care about people living with FASD. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
FOUR FARM KITTENS – Litter trained. Dog friendly. needing a good home. 780375-2197.
Be Honest
WANTED
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Schultz captures gold medal in high jump By Murray Green
Camrose athlete Taylor Schultz had a whirlwind track and field filled summer. “I concentrated on high jump this summer. I added a new coach this year, so I decided to focus on high jump. I wanted to enter TriProvs (track meets involving Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba athletes),” said Taylor. “I have always liked high jump, so that is what I went with this year.” She had success in the pentathlon last year, but because of a move up in age group, it meant switching to heptathlon and adding javelin and hurdles to the other five events. To enter top track meets out of province you have to meet a certain standard. “I went to Calgary in June to qualify and jumped really well. Two years ago, I jumped 1.52m. I ended up jumping 1.58m and the standard for Tri-Prov is 1.55m and the standard for Legion nationals is 1.58m, so I qualified for both. The way Tri-Prov works is that you only have to qualify in one event, but you can enter other events as well,” Taylor explained.
She qualified for high jump, but also entered long jump, triple jump and shot putt. “I went to Winnipeg (July 13 to 15) for Tri-Provs and jumped 1.62m, my personal best and a gold medal. That was really awesome,” said an excited Taylor. “It was a long drive and we arrived late. I had less than an hour to warm up (she arrived at 5:50 p.m. and was scheduled to jump at 6:15 p.m.),” she said. However, she turned in the best jump to win the event. In fact, the next best jumper turned in a 1.5m height. “I started at a lower height because I wanted to get warmed up. But in high jump, you only have so many good jumps in you before you get too tired to do it. I just got too tired so see if I could go beyond 1.62m,” Taylor said. Maybe, she should be late more often. “The next weekend I went to the outdoor track provincials in Sherwood Park. I jumped 1.55m and won the outdoor provincials. It wasn’t a good day and everyone struggled jumping,” Taylor said, but she still managed a gold medal.
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Taylor Schultz represented Alberta in high jump at TriProv and Legion track nationals this summer.
She then spent the next two and a half weeks resting and training for nation-
als. At the Legion youth and midget nationals, Aug.
9 to 14, she competed in just high jump. “It was held in Brandon, so another trip to Manitoba. I got on the bus at 12:30 a.m. in Edmonton and it drove all the way. It was awful, so bad, but in the end it was fun. “We arrived on Thursday and put in some practise jumps. I didn’t have to compete until Saturday morning, which was good to have some time off. I jumped 1.55m again, which was okay because it showed that I was consistently hitting that mark all year. I would have liked to jump 1.60m, but it doesn’t happen every time,” said the 16-year-old, who placed in the top 10. “It was an awesome experience and a lot of fun.” She listened to a former Olympian talk about focusing and visualization that Taylor thought was very useful. Meeting athletes from across Canada added to the experience of competing at the national event. “Once a month I want to train for track and work around basketball. Track is my favourite, but I like to be involved in other sports as well.”
Kodiaks focus on future at preseason tournament By Murray Green
Nobody wants to play meaningless exhibition games, but they are necessary to prepare for the upcoming season. The Camrose Kodiaks found themselves playing the Drumheller Dragons in a game that was closer to a pond hockey session than a game that counted in the standings. With defence left at
the door for both teams, Drumheller outscored the local team 8-5. Camrose started out well by outscoring the Dragons 2-1 in both the first and second periods. Nic Correale and Garret Glaspy scored in the first and Matt Gervais supplied both goals for the Kodiaks in the second. It was all Drumheller
in the third as they netted straight five goals. Carson Welke added the last tally for the Kodiaks. Goalies Griffin Bowerman and Joey May shared the duties in the Camrose net. In the preseason tournament, Camrose were blanked 5-0 by Sherwood Park. There was no scoring in the first two peri-
ods as Bowerman played well. Devin Reagan also was in net. The Kodiaks exhibition season is down to two games. They play a game with Drayton Valley in Camrose on Sept. 5 and a return match on Sept. 6. The regular season opens with Camrose in Drumheller on Sept. 15.
The home season will be launched on Sept. 16 against the same Drumheller Dragons at 7 p.m. Golf tournament
Kodiaks annual golf tournament is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 10 at 9:30 a.m. with a shot gun start at the Camrose Golf Course.
Buffaloes open at home this week By Murray Green
SCORING PLAY
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Drew Coughlin of the Camrose Kodiaks, 20, fought off members of the Drumheller Dragons to score in the exhibition tournament at the EnCana Arena on Aug. 31.
The Camrose Buffaloes will be fielding teams in the bantam, peewee, atom and flag football age groups this fall. Camrose home games will be played at Kin Park. The Buffaloes open with Fort Saskatchewan taking on the peewee squad at 11 a.m. on Sept. 9. The bantam team follows at 1:30 p.m. against Fort Saskatchewan. Buffalo Football Day is planned for Sept. 17. Action begins with flag football followed by an atom game at 10:15 a.m. followed by peewees at 11 a.m. and a bantam game at 1:30 p.m. “This will be a big day for us as we are having the Eskimos promotion team out along with a few Eskimo players,” said Rejeanne
Matson, Buffaloes field coordinator. The last home set of games are slated for Sept. 23. Peewees take on St. Albert at 10 a.m. and the bantams play St. Albert at 12:30 p.m. High school
The Camrose Composite High School season opens at home for the Trojans on Sept. 15. The Trojans will be hosting Drayton Valley in Kin Park at 7:30 p.m. In the Alberta Six Man Football League, Our Lady of Mount Pleasant Royals play a few road games before opening at home on Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. against Provost Panthers. OLMP hosts Rimbey Spartans on Sept. 29 and the Hanna Hawks on Oct. 13.

New Norway boil water lifted By Murray Green
About 137 New Norway water accounts within the hamlet will receive four cubes of water at no charge for the month of August to compensate for flushing costs related to the water main break on Aug. 13. “In the early morning hours of Sunday, Aug. 13, a water main break occurred in New Norway, which had the potential for an unknown quantity of untreated water to enter the potable water distribution system. Camrose County was on-site and working to fix the problem at 1:15 a.m.,” explained County corporate services manager Teresa Gratrix. “County crews isolated the leak and completed flushing before 7 a.m. Sunday. Given the potential for contaminates in the water a Boil Water Advisory was placed in effect. Our crews hand delivered notices to the residents on Sunday and notices were posted on Facebook, Twitter and the website.” Administration recommended a credit of two cubes per water account to compensate for flushing costs resulting from the advisory. That is approximately $800 in discounts on resident water bills.
Residents pay about $5 for a cube of water. “When you add the cost of purchasing water for four days and the inconvenience of boiling water, I ask is that enough,” asked councillor Greg Gillespie. Councillors learned from administration that a cube of water is about 1,000 litres, or 440 gallons of water and that each resident should flush their own system by running the taps until their tank is empty, which takes about two cubes alone. “Councillor Miller moved to change the recommendation to four cubes. New Norway resident Tracy Fontaine questioned council about New Norway fees on Aug. 22 during a regular meeting. “Some bills are up to $175 for a month. I realize that the village is paying for 60 years of neglect, but I would like a breakdown of where the money is going,” she said. Council explained the need to replace pipes and a new lagoon. Reeve Don Gregorwich agreed to send her a letter explaining the complete breakdown. “When we were notified of the village dissolution from the province we were horrified to learn how much
had to be upgraded to meet standards that included a new reservoir and lagoon. It was learned that it was an $8 million project. All county residents pay the same amount for water,” said Gregorwich. “People in New Norway are paying for part of the upgrades. The long and short of it there are only 137 accounts to cover those costs.” The rest of the costs are absorbed by the county through grants and by the province. “Volume of water is very important. If we sell more water then the costs go down,” shared councillor Doug Lyseng. “In Armena, (his home) we are never going to be in a full cost recovery. Maybe New Norway has an opportunity to grow and the water costs can go down that way.” Fontaine was happy to learn of the free four cubes of water, which should be about a $20 reduction in fees for August. “Don’t get me wrong, I think public works did an awesome job and responded fast. Since New Norway dissolved, the county has done an awesome job and they plow the roads the day after a storm,” concluded Fontaine.
