It’s been a very busy summer at Camrose and District Centennial Museum. However, one of the most popular annual activities at the museum is yet to take place.
On Sunday, September 17th from 12:00 noon until 5:00 p.m. almost every vehicle or piece of machinery capable of running, or in good operating condition, will be fired up and, when possible, displayed in action. The highlight of Machinery Day will inevitably be the live threshing demonstration. This will be your chance to relive farm life a century back in time. The work was dirty, back-breaking and dangerous. This and other portrayals of a different way of life from yesteryear will leave you fascinated and better educated, but likely not jealous, in view of the struggles our ancestors experienced on a daily basis.

Letters to the Editor Zucchini Wars, Part 1: Green Thumb Blues
The email seemed from long ago and far away. “The mom of one of the gals in the art department just dropped off a shopping bag full of zucchinis. Reminded us of your column about trying to find a home for a bumper crop that you had a few years ago. It was a scream. If you could lay your hands on it, I think it is worth a re-print.” Turns out I can do better than that. I can go back to before I had a crop of zucchinis. Here’s the prequel, from many years ago. More next week… ***
My thumb is green only in the sense that sometimes when I’m tearing up lettuce, green guck gets under my thumbnail. Still, I have a glimmering of why devout gardeners are devout. When we moved to a house with a garden space, I was apprehensive. What I knew about gardening would fit under one thumbnail. But I planted some seeds. Nothing exotic. Basic lettuce, radishes, carrots and tomatoes. In no time I was hooked. It seemed miraculous. You put seeds in the ground and they know what to do. Nobody has to instruct them. They just quietly turn into plants. Amazing! I’d go to work all excited. “The radishes are up!” People started avoiding me. It didn’t matter. Gardening was therapeutic. The world might be on the edge of disaster, but when you put seeds in the ground they know what to do. The universe is orderly after all. That was until – The Year of the Zucchini. ***
I thought I was planting zucchini, but when the plants started to produce, the vegetables didn’t look like zucchini. Instead of being dark and long, they were pale green and round, and they didn’t seem to grow. I told an experienced gardener about my strange vegetables that didn’t grow. “Did you fertilize them?” she asked. “Yes, I put fertilizer in the soil when I planted them.” “No,” she said. “I mean did you fertilize the plants?” “What do you mean?” “With some plants, you have to fertilize the flowers.” “You do?” I was completely puzzled. “How do you do that?” I imagined sprinkling plant fertilizer on top of the flowers. “Well, the flowers aren’t all the same. There are male flowers and female flowers.” “There are?” I couldn’t believe it. “Yes. You have to fertilize the female flowers with the male flowers.” “What? How do you know which is which?” I mean, with kittens you turn them upside down. How do you tell with flowers? “You’ll know,” she said. “Just look inside the flower and you’ll be able to tell.” I accepted that. “So what do you actually do to fertilize them?” “You put the male flower inside the female flower.” I was stunned. “You mean, zucchini have sex lives?” This raised all sorts of questions. Do you, um, do it at night? In the daytime? Should you close your eyes? What if someone walks by? Do plants like privacy? Will the neighbours be offended?

The future of Camrose and District Music Festival may be in jeopardy, as several of the dedicated people who have kept the festival alive for many years are now moving on to other endeavors. Unless some new volunteers with a passion for the arts are willing to step up and fill the vacated positions there may be no festival in 2018. For 36 years it has been the privilege of Camrose students and teachers to take part in the annual week-long festival each April. It is a celebration of the arts of music, dance and speech featuring young local student solo performances as well as performances by school and community bands, and choirs. Over 1,000 participants are involved each year. The festival is topped off with a Grand Concert featuring some of the most exciting performances of the week. Two crucial festival asso-
ciation positions that have honoraria attached are festival secretary (administrator) and computer operator. The festival will not run unless these positions are filled. Other important opportunities to serve are as recording secretary, treasurer, fundraising coordinator, scheduling assistant or members at large. The festival committee each year has been very grateful for the continuing generous financial support by many local businesses, organizations and individuals as well as the City of Camrose. The Camrose festival is part of a network of festivals across Alberta and Canada dedicated to providing students with opportunities to perform, receive adjudications and learn from experts in their field. Some of the most talented performers are chosen by the adjudicators for the opportunity to go on to provincial and eventually national competitions. Several of our young Camrose and area artists have excelled at the provincial level; some have gone on to successful careers in the arts! It would be most unfortunate if the organization making possible these opportunities is allowed to die. I appeal to those of you who wish to see the festival continue to offer your time and talents to this worthwhile organization. More information is available at camrosemusicfestival. ca. This is a reply to the letter published in the issue of Aug. 29. If the forces of the right can agree on a policy it makes sense that they unite. The centre should, however, remain separate so that voters can choose in the next election among left, right or centre. The right, being the Conservatives and Wildrosers, base their appeal on criticism. If they are preparing to be government rather than opposition, they need to develop policy designed to improve the economy and general life of the people of the province. They must tell the voters how they will improve life and not repeat what they feel is wrong. The letter of Mr. Vanderwoude states, “This government has made it hard for people like me to pay the bills.” In what way has this government made it hard to pay bills? Statements of criticism with no evidence will not influence voters. Voters want truth and definite plans not just criticisms. The new united right by whatever name needs to develop policies and not just repeat criticisms. Ron Williams, Camrose

I went home and looked at my zucchini plants with new eyes. Sure enough, I could tell which flowers were male and which were female. Self-consciously, I put the male flowers inside the female flowers. (I felt like I shouldn’t be watching.) And in due course, the zucchini began to swell. Somebody asked, “How come your zucchini are getting so big?” “I think they’re pregnant.” ***
I’m still a very amateur gardener but I know a few more things than I did when I started. 1. Things you want to grow, that you water and cultivate and fuss over, will wither and die for no reason. 2. Things you do not want to grow, like dandelions and chickweed, can withstand drought, flood, herbicides, noxious bugs and passing dogs. 3. Zucchinis have sex lives. In the 22nd annual championship of the McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour, Eric Bouck shot a 72 to tie for second place overall. He won the junior boys division against 15 and 16-year-olds. Mason Kucy was tied for 10th with an 81 and brother Devin recorded a 91. Jace Shannon of Forestburg was tied for eighth with an 85 score in the golfers born in 2003 and later division. Jayla Kucy, 11, also shot an 85, but in the girls category. It was good for third place. Jenna Sand of Bashaw scored a 92 to tie for seventh place. During the entire season of golfing, Mason Kucy was the winner in the boys born in 2001 and 2002 age group with 548 points. Bouck was third with 340 points and Devin was tied for fifth with 300. Shannon placed fifth in his age division with 318 points. Jayla finished the season tied for second in the junior girls with 380 points against older girls. Sand tied for 10th with 150 points. Shannon won his age division at the Edmonton Junior Golf Championships at the Derrick Golf and Country Club on Aug. 26 and 27. He was entered in the 12 and under boys’ category. Bouck, Devon Kucy, Jayla Kucy and Mason Kucy of Camrose were also in the championships. At the Alberta Golf Novice Championship tournament in Claresholm, Shannon won the novice boys event with 121 points, 12 more than the second and third place finishers. Devin Kucy tied for 12th with 165 in two championship rounds in the bantam division. In the net category, he shot 149 for 15th place. Jayla Kucy was 10th in the bantam girls with a 153 total. Then in the championship rounds she fired a 169 for seventh place.

St. Mary’s Hospital to improve emergency layout By Murray Green
There is one constant in life: change. Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose will be changing the layout of the emergency department to improve service and safety. Construction is expected to begin in late September and will take about three months for the first phase. Most of the construction is expected to be completed around springtime of next year. “A lot of thought has gone into the phases. When you take a section out, they will be able to continue the services. It will be a challenge, but the staff here is resilient,” said Patrick Dumelie, Covenant Health president on Thursday, Sept. 7. “The emergency area wouldn’t have been built the same way if it was done today. When people come to the emergency department, it is often when they are ill and waiting for assessment. The nurses need to be in position to observe them. People in treatment rooms need to be observed, so this is going to help our staff in terms of being able to deliver safe care. Safety of our staff is important as well.” Inconveniences will be expected for those attending the hospital this fall. “Despite all of the construction, the emergency is open, but it will be a work around. There will be noise and workers and, at times, a tight squeeze,” said Cherylyn Antymniuk, St. Mary’s site administrator. “We want to get the message across that we are still open, but we have to work around some construction.” Cherylyn said that the hospital has great community support when it comes to making the facility better to serve the residents. “This is something that we have been wanting to do for a long time, so we are excited that we are able to

start on this big project,” explained Cherylyn. The hospital was built in 1986 and has served as a great facility for the community. However, the emergency department has been one spot that the hospital identified as needing an upgrade for a number of years. “Nurses will have improved sight lines to waiting, patient and trauma rooms. They will almost be able to see 360 degrees,” said Melissa Berg, St. Mary’s patient care manager. “We will just have to work around construction until the work has been completed.” Safety is a concern for both the staff and patients. “The glass will provide a safer work environment for staff and patients. Staff will be able to navigate
easier without being in the way of the general public,” added Melissa. “Our Phase 1 will be about a third of the department. We will be taking out a nursing centre and moving the waiting room over, so that the public can be seen by the nursing station staff. It gives us a triage area, so we are excited about that. Currently, people line up down the hallway.” Phase 1 also includes renovating the security room and changing a vacant area into a storage room. All areas, including the public washroom, will be more wheelchair friendly. “It’s a big endeavor, but we are looking forward to it. We are lucky to have several entrances. We’ll just have to go around workers,” added Melissa.
Phase 2, square foot wise, is a smaller project, but it will involve taking out our soiled room and creating a new nursing station. “Throughout the construction of both phases, we will be down two beds. That makes it challenging for the department, but we will still be open for business,” said Melissa. Phase 3 will include most of the rest of the main level. “I’m spending the whole day here talking to patients and staff to reconnect with the hospital. I’m excited to learn about the changes to emergency. We are really proud of this facility and the resilience of the staff, and their ability to meet the challenges,” Patrick said. “We offer a lot of services out of this facility.
Our ability to serve people within the community with a high quality of service is something that we are really proud of. We want that to continue, so we look at the community’s needs.” Rural health care is just as important as that of the two major centres. “The number one challenge is finding and retaining staff. We want to make sure we not only have qualified people in place, but have backup in place as well, so the service is continued. Rural health care is usually successful in one or two special areas, but Camrose has the dedicated staff to be successful in many areas. They deliver a comprehensive array of services,” said Patrick.

Camrose and District Family Thrift Shop is giving back to the community in a big way and celebrating 50 years of running a not-for-profit consignment store in Camrose. On Sept. 22, Family Thrift Shop will be donating $55,000 to a total of nine organizations servicing Camrose and area. The donations include $10,000 to the Battle River Community Foundation, $10,000 to the Hospice Society of Camrose and District, $5,000 to Camrose Open Door Association, $5,000 to Camrose and District Victim Services, $5,000 to Camrose Boys and Girls

The City of Camrose 2017 municipal election is on Monday, Oct. 16 and all eligible voters are encouraged to come out and cast their ballots for the position of mayor and eight city councillors. Nomination Day is on Monday, Sept. 18, at City Hall (5204-50 Avenue) from 10 a.m. to noon. On Oct. 16, residents of Camrose will be going to the polls to check boxes in votes for mayor and eight city council members, positions within our city that occupy a great deal of commitment and responsibility. Some of the present councillors answered a few questions about their experiences in an effort to enlighten residents about the duty of sitting on city council. In speaking with councillor David Ofrim, his responses were as follows. What has your experience on council taught you about Camrose, the community and municipal governance? “The City of Camrose has many moving parts,” remarked councillor Ofrim. “There is a lot going on and it’s going on all the time. “It takes strong and efficient management to keep everything running in a reasonably smooth manner. In my short time on council, I have come to deeply appreciate the efforts of City administration and staff which is something that I had previously taken for granted and quite honestly, found it easy to complain about.” David noted that sitting on council helped him to develop a better understanding of how decisions are well thought out. “Getting a chance to be on the “inside,” you realize that decisions and actions are not carelessly arrived at. Detailed analysis of issues, problems or new ideas are undertaken. “However, you will not please everyone all the time and you will hear about it. But that’s okay and that is a sign of a healthy democracy. “The role of council, as I have come to understand, is one of governance–strategic planning, setting policy and passing bylaws to give administration guidance in the day to day operation of the City. “On occasion, issues arise which are outside of these existing guidelines and council is called into action to deliberate and arrive at a direction for administration to follow. Always present is the ongoing challenge of balancing fiscal responsibility with the levels of core services the City provides.” What has been the most rewarding and one of the most challenging parts of being on council? “It is rewarding when council arrives at a consensus on a tough decision through honest discussion and deliberation,” he said. “It is always interesting and valuable to hear a variety of opinions and ideas that council members and administration bring to the table.”

Reiterating his support and appreciation for city administration he added, “Perhaps our best decision this last term was our choice for city manager. Malcolm Boyd has stepped into this role admirably gaining the respect of council, staff and those who have dealings with the City. Coming from the private sector, he brought with him measured decision-making tools that work. Existing practices and new ideas now need to be supported with a Business Case from which council and administration can make logical choices. In explaining some of the challenges of sitting on council Dave said, “When there are two distinct and passionate opposite sides to an issue, it is extra challenging to council because we want to make the right decision for the community as a whole. In doing so we know that it will be unpopular with some of the citizens. That can be discouraging but it is a necessary leadership role that we are elected to do.” What do you feel are the most important roles of a councillor? “Each councillor brings with them a certain skill set that has been formed and developed throughout their personal and professional lives,” he said. “I feel that a councillor needs to utilize these skills to the best of their ability to give proper thought and discourse to the issues of the day.” David added that it is important when casting a vote, for councillors to understand the issues brought before them by properly preparing, listening to the experts, asking the right questions, and discussing it with administration and each other. “Of course, listening to the citizens is paramount.
This typically happens formally in chambers or informally on the street and in the coffee shop. A councillor needs to be approachable.” What do you think contributes to a balanced perspective on council? “I sense the present council slate is open to hearing all sides of an issue which intrinsically leads to a balanced perspective. This is further enhanced by a variety of interests, concerns and as previously mentioned, the skill sets we each have.” What commitments including time can a person expect as a City councillor? “There is definitely a significant time commitment and a reasonably flexible schedule and availability are needed to perform the duties of a councillor,” noted David. “Aside from the regular council meetings, each councillor is tasked with serving on a variety of committees.” What advice would you give to anyone considering running for council? “Councillors are asked to decide on a wide variety of issues and concerns that affect us all to some degree. I would suggest that you understand that while you have a specific concern you feel needs addressing, there are several more issues to be dealt with. Again, the City has many moving parts. In conclusion David commented, “I do maintain that the most important skill in serving on council is listening. Once you have listened and understood an issue, you can then engage your common sense to deliberate and make your best decision.” David indicated he will be letting his name stand for re-election this fall.

The next municipal election will be held on Monday, Oct. 16. That includes Camrose County. Residents can elect councillors in seven divisions. UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. 2. 3. 4.
To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water colour. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants.
This year’s UDF program began August 10, 2017, starting with Zone A (in Area 2) and will continue for two to three months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discoloration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If a discolouration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. What professors really do on their summer holidays
Well, another summer is over and it’s back to school for students and teachers. While everyone complains about the end of summer, for some reason, many people think that teachers, and university professors in particular, should not complain as much. It’s commonly thought that professors have been off for months and it’s about time they got back to work. In the Geraint Osborne, Sociology, Augustana public imagination, university Campus, University professors are seen as being of Alberta on vacation from the beginning of May until the end of August. This is far from the truth. Let’s remember, that during the school year, most professors work substantially more than the standard 35-hour work week and spend many an evening and often their weekends–with grading, class preparation, responding to student emails, and writing recommendation and reference letters. I suppose one could argue that this is essentially overtime for which they are well-compensated. Regardless, the end of the teaching year heralds the beginning of another kind of work, albeit one removed from the strict demands of teaching schedules, marking and committee work. Essentially, professors engage in two types of work during the long summers: scholarly research and teaching preparation. In terms of research, while we engage in some research throughout the year, the summers are especially crucial for preparing research grant applications, engaging in research and creative work, writing up research results, and presenting research findings at national and international conferences to share our research with others. This is an important aspect of our responsibilities, which we are required to do. But besides being expected to engage in such scholarly activity, most of us really enjoy plunging into our research not only because we find it inherently interesting and enjoyable, but also because it’s what makes us as scholars distinctive within academia. Also, research suggests that there is a synergy between good research and good teaching. Good teaching requires a serious amount of preparation and the summer months are when professors overhaul their courses and determine what worked well and what did not. We are constantly designing the delivery of the course material, devising better assessment tools and, most importantly, keeping up with the most current research in our teaching and research areas. In order for our students to be taught effectively, professors have to be familiar with all the major developments in all of the courses that they teach. There is little time for this in the academic year when professors are teaching, holding office hours, and doing committee work. As such, the summer is the time to read, think, and assess new developments. Keeping current requires a significant amount of reading and thinking and the summer is when professors have time to do this. For many, this may not seem like work. In a society characterized by aliteracy– that is, knowing how to read, but choosing not to –reading is perhaps seen as alien, a waste of time, or a perverse luxury afforded those who have nothing better to do. But reading carefully and critically is certainly work! As one of my colleagues who was raised on a farm put it, thinking that an academic doesn’t work in the summer is akin to thinking a farmer doesn’t work in the winter. For farmers, the winter is a busy time: there is equipment to be maintained, animals to be cared for, agricultural meetings to attend, and planning and marketing to be thought out well in advance of animal production and planting seasons. So, rather than thinking of professors as “returning to work” this fall, it’s more appropriate to view it as a shift in the focus of their labour. The focus and rhythms change, but the work remains. As with most things in life, preparation is the key to success, and the summer is an important time of research and preparation. I hope our students in the fall and winter terms agree!

Traffic will be moving a little slower across the 48th Avenue bridge these next few months as construction on the 48 Avenue Bridge Replacement Project begins. City of Camrose director of engineering Jeremy Enarson provided more details on the scope of work and proposed schedule for the project which will be taking place over two phases. Phase 1 will mainly involve clearing of vegetation within the project area, the placement of erosion control devices, the placement of fill material into Mirror Lake for the widened roadway and other related work. “During the first few days of the project, the contractor will begin mobilizing equipment into the area,” explained Enarson. Traffic accommodations signs were put into place on Sept. 8 and the actual work began on the week of Sept. 9. The contractor will be mainly working on the south side
of 48th Avenue for the first month or so of the project, and then switching over to the north side of 48 Avenue by late September or early October. The work for Phase 1 will continue until midNovember. During this time residents can expect some delays as there will be partial closures of the roadway involving no more than one lane closed at any time. Construction will generally occur between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Lane restrictions are intended to be removed at the end of each working day by the PSA (contracted construction company) opening all lanes to traffic in the evenings and on Sundays. Alternating sidewalks on either side of 48 Avenue (between 53 Street and downtown) will also be closed down during this period. Pedestrians will be able to travel on whichever sidewalk is opposite of where PSA is actively working and are encouraged to use other walkways
in the area, including the walkway over the spillway at the south end of Mirror Lake or the pedestrian bridge connecting 48A Avenue and 48 Avenue near the Bill Fowler Centre. “From mid-November to early March 2018, all traffic restriction will be removed and 48 Avenue will function as normal,” added Enarson. Details of the specific work for Phase Two of the project are still in development. “Once PSA mobilizes to the site in late March or early April 2018, 48 Avenue will be completely closed to the traveling public (both vehicles and pedestrians). This will allow PSA to remove the existing roadway bridge as well as the pedestrian bridges located immediately north and south of the roadway bridge,” continued Enarson. The proposed completion of the majority of the new bridge and installation of the new pedestrian underpass, is the end of June 2018. Early July will see the construction of the new roadway along 48 Avenue between 51 Street and 53 Street and the electrical work on the pedestrian underpass structure. “As per the contract (with PSA), all work must be substantially complete by Aug. 31, 2018.” Residents are reminded to slow down during all construction and use extreme caution when passing through the construction area both in vehicles and on foot.

The Diabetes Canada reusable goods donation program is asking for the public’s assistance in donating gently used clothing and household items in the Camrose Area. Proceeds from donations support diabetes research, education, programs, services and advo-
cacy for the 11 million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes. Diabetes Canada diverts more than 100 million pounds of clothing and household items from landfills annually, so donations not only benefit those with diabetes or prediabetes, donations also benefit the environment. The Camrose Composite High School season opens at home for the Trojans on Sept. 15. The Trojans will be hosting Drayton Valley in Kin Park at 7:30 p.m. CCHS will have two other home dates. The Trojans host Rocky Mountain House on Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. and the Ponoka Broncs on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. In the Alberta Six Man Football League, Our Lady of Mount Pleasant Royals play a few road games before opening at home on Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. against Provost Panthers. Churchmice players hold auditions By Murray Green
The Churchmice Players will be holding dance auditions for the upcoming play Jesus Christ Superstar on Sept. 15 at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre beginning at 7 p.m. The full cast auditions will be held the following week, Sept. 21 and 22 at the Camrose United Church at 7 p.m.

The rehearsals for And Then There Were None production have already started. The play will be held in the Bailey Theatre and will include a couple of dinner theatres. Regular shows will be held on Nov. 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18 at 8 p.m. The dinner theatres will be on Nov. 12 and 18 at 2 p.m.

BRCF assists Bawlf cemetery The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a grant to the Village of Bawlf to assist with operating the Bawlf Cemetery. The grant is from income from the Storvik Family Fund created in 2006 to support the operation of the Bawlf Cemetery. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects and facilities, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995 the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $4,865,000 to support community facilities and programs such as those in the Village of Bawlf. Eat healthy this fall, enjoy seasonal fruit By Alberta Health Services
It is fall and everyone wants to make the most of it. The sunny, warm season means eating and/or cooking outdoors. Here are some tips for healthy eating. Keep vegetables and fruit as the main focus on your plate: fill half your plate with vegetables, fruit or a green salad. Use plain yogurt, lemon juice, herbs and spices to make delicious dips and dressings. Try cooking vegetables, such as eggplant or cabbage wedges, on the barbecue grill. Create colourful vegetable kabobs using bell pepper, corn, onion, zucchini, mushroom and tomato. Cook a potato, yam or cob of corn wrapped in aluminum foil on the barbecue. When choosing meat, fish or tofu to grill, look for lean cuts or poultry without skin, use a marinade, cook meat on foil or a grill pan, cook at a lower temperature and trim charred pieces of meat, and choose fish and shellfish more often. You can grill a whole salmon filet on a cedar plank or wrapped in aluminum foil with herbs and spices, marinate tofu cubes and grill
them on a skewer with vegetable pieces. To quench thirst in a healthy way, f lavour water with lemon or orange wedges, mint leaves, fresh rosemary or frozen berries. Make f lavoured ice cubes by putting a berry in each cube of an ice cube tray and filling it with water. Try making fizzy drinks with carbonated water, a splash of 100 per cent fruit juice and frozen fruit. Include refreshing fall desserts. Take advantage of what summer had to offer by choosing seasonal fruit. Grilled peaches, pineapple or plums with a dollop of Greek yogurt are a tasty dessert. Try homemade frozen desserts by freezing your favourite smoothie recipe in a popsicle tray or small cups with a popsicle stick in the middle. The Camrose RCMP, Camrose Police Service and Camrose County Protection Services remind motorists that students are back at school. Motorists are urged to use caution when driving through residential areas and to adhere to speed limits in school and playground zones. Make sure your child’s walk to school is a safe route and your child is familiar with it. Wait until traffic comes to a stop before crossing. Always stop and look both ways before crossing the street. Cross streets only at crosswalks and learn to look to the left, the right and then left again before proceeding, even at intersections with pedestrian walk signs. Wait for the bus in a safe place well back from the edge of the road and wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before leaving the curb. Remain seated and do not move around on the bus. Never distract the bus driver. Always follow his or her instructions.

Olson keeps his dad’s car in the family By Murray Green
Gord Olson of Hay Lakes was one of the younger siblings in his family. He remembers riding in his parents 1937 Chevrolet four door sedan when they went to town. “My dad bought this car brand new in 1937, so it has been on the farm all of this time, 80 years,” recalled Gordon. “It was driven until 1963 and then parked in a shed.” He tore apart the car and rebuilt it to its original state. “It is pretty much all original, except that I converted it to a 12-volt electrical system and I put air conditioning in,” explained Gordon. “On the hot days, it is more comfortable now.” He admits spending more on the car than his dad did. “I think he paid around $875 for the car and he bought it at Central Garage in downtown Camrose. I have the original warranty card for it and the original manual.” The Master edition, which includes Gordon’s vehicle, replaced the lower priced Standard Six in 1937, while the more luxurious new Master Deluxe edged the range upwards. The vehicle was shared with the Pontiac Deluxe. “I remember my parents driving the car and taking us to town. Sometimes it was everyone at once,” recalled Gordon, who was one of seven children. “It wasn’t a whole bunch of times, but on occasion it was nine of us in the car.” That’s one thing he wouldn’t try today. “I didn’t have any problems restoring the car, other than waiting for parts, gears and transmission. I found those in the States. That was the most trouble I had. Most of the parts came out of Vancouver, Washington.” Eight years after Chevrolet entered the low-priced six-cylinder field it was time for the division to make some upgrades. An improved engine and smooth, contemporary styling combined to make Chevrolet a better value in the late 1930s. “I had to put a little newer and bigger motor in it. Originally, it had a 216cc six cylinder in it. Now, it has a 235. The reason for changing it, was the fact it had full pressure to the crank and full

oil pressure to the rods, and to the mains. The 216 motor just had pressure to the main bearings using a splash system on the rod bearings. It has a little more power now.” Gordon did everything at home by himself, except for the upholstery. “A women from Edmonton did that. She came out to the farm and did it. I sent her the patterns and she sewed everything together. The ribs and headliner she sewed and then brought it out and installed it together. She took the seats with her and did those in Edmonton.” A trend-setting highlight in 1937, referred to by GM chief designer Harley Earl as the diamond crown speedline, was a body crease that started in the valley between the engine compartment and front fender, and extended across the cowl and onto the front door. Smaller 16-inch wheels contributed to a lower profile. A strengthened version of the box girder frame, introduced on the 1936 Standard cars, was used throughout
the 1937 line. Bodies, wider and roomier than before, were made entirely of steel instead of the traditional composite construction and weight was reduced by more than 150 pounds. Beneath the hood was a brand new engine. Still featuring overhead valves, it had a shorter stroke and a larger bore than the previous unit. Displacement was increased slightly, to 216.5 cubic inches, and four main bearings were fitted instead of three. Horsepower was rated at 85, same as the Ford V-8. All models now enjoy the advantage of an improved synchromesh transmission. The Standard cars were gone. This time the two series, both using a 112.5-inch chassis, were called Master and Master DeLuxe. Each came in a choice of six body types, the two-door Town Sedan (with built-in trunk) being by far the most popular in both lines. Master DeLuxe models, in addition to upgraded upholstery and appointments, came with Knee-Action front suspension as standard equip-
ment. They were also fitted with a 4.22:1 performance axle, while Master models employed a 3.73:1 economy ratio. Both series used hypoid gears in lieu of 1936’s spiral bevel cogs.
Prices were increased by about $100. Sales fell off slightly as the economy slipped into recession, but Chevrolet managed to stay narrowly ahead of Ford for the calendar year.

Restricted fire ban added By Murray Green
Camrose County has implemented a restricted fire ban. It came in effect on Sept. 8 because of a lack of substantial rain over the last month.
This ban suspends all existing permits and prohibits the issuance of any new permits. All outdoor fires must be extinguished. This ban does permit the
use of enclosed fire pits and burning barrels. Approved propane devices are also permitted such as barbecues.

2000, the Stars of Alberta program has recognized 109 volunteers from across the province. “Across the province, volunteers are giving generously of their time and talents to make life better for Albertans,” said min-
ister of culture and tourism Ricardo Miranda. In an effort to help set standards for service, encourage sustained commitment to civic participation and inspire others to volunteer, therefore enriching not only their own lives but the
lives of others, the province is encouraging people to pay tribute to outstanding volunteers. Six awards will be handed out–two people in each of the categories of youth, adult and senior. Recipients will be honoured

I want to join in with everyone wishing our students in Battle River-Crowfoot all the best as they return to their studies for another year. It is true that if you apply yourself to your studies, it will pay off. It is important not just to learn, but to learn ‘how to learn’. Too often in daily life we get taught by the school of ‘hard knocks’ and after enough of that, most of us truly want to ‘learn’ things a different way. As your Member of Parliament, whenever I am invited to speak at a school or a graduation ceremony, I underline for the graduates – and other students – that in my opinion, there is no better place or time to be studying and achieving than right here in Alberta. Compared to many places around the world, Albertan students are most fortunate. One good example is, of course, our agriculture sector. This sector of our economy has served our province well over many decades. Many folks call it our primary industry. Energy, science and technology, tourism and a host of other sectors offer us many opportunities, yet, the world will always be hungry, and we’re very good at feeding them. When the Conservative Party of Canada formed government in 2006, we put ‘farmers first.’ We set in motion a re-design of the federal government’s suite of programs used to support the agriculture industry across Canada. We worked closely with farmers, ranchers, producers and industry spokespersons and associations in all parts of the agriculture network. There was a great deal of ‘studying’ in those first months, so that we could get it right in our “Growing Forward” program that we eventually launched to help agricultural producers across Canada. It was successful and years later we built on that work and launched Growing Forward II. I raise this example to show our students that hardwork studying seemingly ‘mundane’ lessons (that are not nearly as fun as Phys. Ed. class for example) really does pay off. Having put ‘farmers first’ in our political agenda, our study of the industry made clear the prospects that international trade offered Canada. Our agriculture minister Gerry Ritz, travelled the world in those years and helped sign-up Canadian farmers to fill contracts everywhere we could. Today Canada’s agricultural exports are at record highs and include commodities that we never would have dreamed of producing were it not for taking the time to: ‘study’ the market; ‘study’ the needs of the potential international customers; ‘study’ our capabilities to produce the commodity; ‘study’ our competitors; and finally, ‘study’ how to deliver the goods. Yes, ‘studying’ and ‘learning’ are truly lifelong processes. Many of Canada’s successes can trace back to our ability to study and learn what is best for our country. We have built one of the most prosperous nations in the world – with our comparatively small population. Today’s students are our greatest assets and greatest hope for the future. So we encourage all of our students to study ‘hard’ and ‘smart’ – we’re counting on you! With gratitude shown in an outpouring of smiles and hugs, Special Olympic athletes have a way of making even the smallest of kind gestures sent their way feel like they have just won the lottery. As for the person handing out the kindness, their life will truly be touched. Carol Wideman, Special Olympics Camrose affiliate chair, knows all too well the immeasurable fulfillment one gets as a volunteer with these very special athletes. “It started (10 years prior) with our son Preston, who is a special athlete,” said Carol of her extraordinary journey of volunteering with the organization. “I was a spectator at one of the softball tournaments and, having a lot of background in softball, (her and her husband Graham are both certified coaches) I just asked if I could help on the field, and I have never looked back.” While being able to participate as a volunteer for her son Preston may have been one of the main reasons Carol first got involved, she quickly realized the other 115 athletes would take a special place in her life and heart as well. “I found that it is probably the most rewarding volunteering I have done in my entire life. I have gotten to know so many athletes, and as people not just as athletes. I am just so happy that they are all my friends.” Approximately six years ago, Carol was asked to take on the role of chairperson for the Camrose affiliate and in her time volunteering and sitting on the affiliate management committee, she has not only seen the organization grow, but has experienced a wealth of generosity and support within the community. “Working together with the affiliate, we have at least 50 volunteers. There are so many people in Camrose who are great supporters and great helpers.” Humbled by the overwhelming amount of support Special Olympics receives in Camrose, Carol added the importance of the relationships that have been established with Camrose Police Service and the Law Enforcement Torch Run, Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute and Augustana students, to name a few. “Many of the Augustana students do volunteering for our sports program. Some start as a volunteer for credit and then they are hooked and they come back and volunteer on their own time, not just for credit.
“We have such a wonderful group of volunteers. They give so much of their time and a lot of them not only volunteer on the affiliate, but coach sports as well. They are so valuable– all of them.” As for the athletes themselves, Carol said the rewards are tenfold. Special Olympics gives them an opportunity to be a part of their own unique community and they are building self esteem, healthy living habits and body image and wonderful friendships. “We have had many
absolute profound cheering by the other athletes who had won what other people might deem as more notable accolades. “I remember being completely covered in goosebumps, knowing who the true winners were.” As Preston joins us for the interview, the sense of Carol’s unwavering devotion and pride for her own son becomes apparent as she announces that the Camrose Special Olympic softball team, of which Preston is an outfielder, just won gold in Advanced

parents who have come to us and said how glad they are that these sports are available for their children instead of playing video games for 10 hours a week. Now they are out being active,” Carol noted with a degree of pride that comes with the total dedication she has for the organization. She recalls uncountable moments of the joy she has received in being part of these amazing athletes’ lives and sharing in their unique sense of pure happiness and unbridled compassion. “I remember one of our first tournaments (softball) when we went away to play. We won it all in our division and everybody was getting these huge trophies. We were all out in this grassy field when one of the other teams was called up and given acknowledgment for participating. Some of the athletes were using walkers and some definitely had physical challenges, but they were all so very proud of what they had accomplished.” Carol recalled the

A visit to this 1898-built home, available for educatio nal purpose and viewing pleasure at the Camros e Museum since 1979, is like stepping back in The popular and well-app time. ointed museum is a must-se e in the summer season, celebrating 50 years of operation. The home was built by Thore Grue and his wife and five children housed for five years. Knut Lyseng struck and surrounding land in a deal on the home 1903; however, the dwelling It was in this year that sat empty until 1910. Carl Lyseng (son of Knut) purchased the homest farming needs. The well-bui ead for his lt home featured one room downstairs and one room upstairs for Carl and his wife Ragna. The family made this their home until The upstairs was divided 1969! into bedrooms by curtains A sunporch was added . in 1935 and electricity was finally added in 1950. The move to the grounds of the Camrose Museum , nearly four decades ago, was not the home’s first move. The home was originally built too close to the road allowance and Kurt Lyseng moved it using two bobsleds, each powered by a team of six strong horses. Today, this home stands preserved in time for all to see and admire. It reflects a simple, yet challenging, way of life.

Vehicle complaint leads to drug charges By Lori Larsen
Camrose Police Service scored a significant drug seizure and subsequent charges as the result of a citizen complaint on Aug. 28 at approximately 3:45 a.m. regarding a parked vehicle with two suspicious people inside. After attending the area, approaching the vehicle and speaking to the two occupants, police noted a strong odour of cannabis marijuana and observed other drug paraphernalia within the vehicle. The two occupants of the vehicle were arrested under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and a search of the vehicle resulted in locating a small quantity of cannabis marijuana, 35 grams of cocaine, 35 grams of methamphetamine, six grams of shatter (marijuana concentrates), scales, cellular phones and $1,400 cash. All items were seized. The 34-year-old male occupant was charged with two counts of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possession of Property obtained by Crime for the purpose of Trafficking under $5,000, two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, two counts of Failure to Comply with Conditions of an Undertaking or Recognizance, two counts of Failing to Comply with a Probation Order and one count of Possession of an Operator’s License Issued to Another. The 26-year-old female occupant was charged with two counts of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking and one count of Failure to Comply with Conditions of an Undertaking or Recognizance. Both of the accused appeared before a Justice of the Peace to speak to their release. The male remains in custody until his first appearance in Camrose Provincial court on Aug. 30. The female was released on bail and was scheduled to appear in Camrose Provincial Court. “It is nice when a simple citizen complaint leads to these types of serious charges,” said Camrose Police Service Constable Kelly Bauer. “It just goes to show it takes an entire community to keep that community safe.” If you see or hear anything suspicious contact Camrose Police Service complaint line at complaint line 780-672-4444.

To Bernie and the doctors in emergency who quickly sedated Lorne and got him ready for the ambulance ride to the Royal Alex, we thank you so very much. (We cannot name all of you, but you know who you are.) Dr. Morrow was a pillar of strength and knowledge for us and helped us cope at this very difficult time. She saw Lorne through to the end, together with Reverend B. Hunter who assisted and comforted the family with his compassion, prayer and words of wisdom and experience. The palliative care unit is excellent; they have got it right in there! Lorne could not have received the exceptional care elsewhere. We could feel the care and compassion of all who attended to him. It takes a special person to make all the arrangements come together and we thank Burgar Funeral Home, specifically Cam Park, for his experience and kindness. Camrose is very lucky to have such wonderful people in the community. Lydia Van Buskirk Lydia Van Buskirk of Tofield, AB passed away on September 2, 2017 at the age of 88 years after a short, hard battle with cancer. She loved her farm, her animals, gardening, flowers and sewing. One of her greatest joys was having her family gather at the farm for occasions and she loved being a Grama. She is survived by children Valerie (Reg), Ray (Karen) and Terry; grandchildren Chasity, Jennifer, Bradley, Sabrina, Chad, Derek, Justin, Cody, Jesse and Amber; thirteen great-grandchildren; many adopted grandchildren; special families Theresa and Chrystal (Ken); and numerous family and friends. She was predeceased by husband Wilfred, granddaughter Patricia and son Bruce. March 27, 1929 ~ September 4, 2017 Arnold was born in Camrose, Alberta on March 27, 1929 and passed away on September 4, 2017 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose after a short battle with cancer. Arnold was the oldest of four children born to Hank and Julia Westfall. He settled in the Edberg/New Norway area where he married Marjorie Kerr in 1951. Arnold’s passion was his farm of grain, dairy and pigs over the years. He loved working on his antique tractors, woodworking, ski-dooing, fishing, camping and animals. He loved spending time with his family, stopping in at Edberg Senior Centre and visiting the coffee group at McDonald’s. He had a quiet nature, but one of honesty and integrity. Arnold was always there to help a friend or neighbor in time of need. Left to cherish his memory are his three children Charlotte (Odean) Trautman, Rhonda Trautman and Kevin (Robin) Westfall; eight grandchildren Maureen (Chris) MacBeath, Steven (Deanna) Trautman, Becky (Kevin) Mills, Jennifer, Travis and Chanessa Borstmayer, and Dane and Shaye Westfall; nine greatgrandchildren; brother Melvin Westfall; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law. Kodiaks silence the DV Thunder By Murray Green
The Camrose Kodiaks dug a 2-1 hole after the first period, but bounced back to silence the Drayton Valley Thunder 5-3 in exhibition play, Sept. 5. Tate Coughlin of the Kodiaks opened the scoring before the Thunder was heard for two goals. Camrose picked up the pace in the second frame with Cole Wyatt, Ethan Mack and Kyler Kupka replying for the Kodiaks, while the Thunder scored once. In the third, the teams tightened the defence with Nic Correale garnering the only tally late in the period. Goalie Griffin Bowerman stopped 10 of 13 shots, while Landon Pavlison came in relief and turned away all 11 shots faced in the last half of the contest. In the preseason tournament, Camrose was blanked 1-0 by the Fort McMurray Oil Barons in a great preseason game. Although the teams didn’t score in regulation, the teams played well with only four penalties between them. In a goaltender’s duel, it was Pavlison that was the star for the Kodiaks by stopping all 24 shots he faced. It took the Oil Barons three periods, overtime and two shootout attempts to finally put one behind him. The regular season opens with Camrose in Drumheller on Sept. 15. The home season will be launched on Sept. 16 against the same Drumheller Dragons at 7 p.m. Pre-game festivities for the home opener get under way at 5 p.m. with a barbecue and the Mirror Lake Express giving train rides. Movie day The Kodiaks will be holding a barbecue and movie day on Sunday, Sept. 17. The barbecue begins at 12:30 p.m. and the movie Despicable Me 3 will begin at 2 p.m. at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. Reesor named Alberta Probus director By Murray Green
Bayard Reesor is heading into unchartered waters. The Probus Club of Camrose member was named the Alberta director for Probus Canada. It is a position that no other Camrose member has filled. Camrose received a Probus charter in 1995, back when it had to be sponsored by a Rotary Club. “I was the second president and was one of the charter members,” said Bayard. “Si Siwak was the first president and I was the vice president. Probus is not a service club. It is more of a fellowship club. Most of the members do much volunteering, but not as a club.” The members meet every third Tuesday of the month at 9:30 a.m. at the Norsemen Inn. The next meeting is on Sept. 19. “The idea is to bring in a speaker every month. Other clubs, as I have learned from my time as a director, have several other activities such as bridge, weaving, walking, golf or whatever the club wants to do. My wife and I visited the Qualicum Beach club this spring and saw in their newsletter that they have 20 different activities. This is something our club may want to consider.” He recalled the Camrose club going on a dinner cruise on Sylvan Lake one year. “When Glen Lett was president, he arranged to go to Northlands in Edmonton one day to watch the horse races. We can do many things; it depends on the members.” Probus Canada has 13 directors. Bayard was elected last spring after the Alberta position was vacant. The lady who was leaving canvassed the six Alberta clubs looking for people to let their name stand. A seventh club is being formed in Grande Prairie this fall. “You have to be a current member and a past president of your club and must be nominated by the president, in this case Alex Oliver. I thought I was safe and wouldn’t be elected, so I let my name stand,” joked Bayard. “A vote from each club was taken and I heard that I was voted in.” One of the director’s duties is to keep in touch with each of the clubs in the province. “It is the director’s job to contact each club and give advice with any problems they may have, or to answer questions,” explained Bayard.
The 48th Avenue Bridge Replacement Project will see reconstruction between 51st Street and 54th Street, which includes the installation of a pedestrian concrete box culvert and other work at Mirror Lake, from September 5 to November 15. “It is a steep learning curve for me. I will be going to Grande Prairie to bring greetings from Probus Canada and present them with their charter. The good thing about contacting all of the clubs is that you hear all of the ideas and how they do things. I can learn things and take that information back to share with the Camrose club. My wife Sue is the new president, so I hope that she will listen to me once in a while,” he laughed. He thinks the Camrose club might want to expand its activities. “Four of the six Alberta clubs produce a newsletter. Perhaps we
should have one. First, we would have to find out if people want it and then find someone to produce it. “Being a director benefits the various clubs when I visit. For example, I hope to present a 25th anniversary certificate to one of the Edmonton clubs this fall. If they invite the press and receive more coverage in the papers, it creates greater awareness for Probus.” Bayard will be attending the annual general meeting of Probus Canada next April, probably in Vancouver. Most of the national meetings are held by conference calls throughout the year.

Terry Fox Run supports cancer research By Murray Green
The 37th annual Terry Fox Run is a fun activity for the community to raise funds for cancer research. While Terry Fox Run committee member Dawn Anderson is hoping for another great turnout, her son Gavin Galenza is planning for another good run in the valley. He has participated every year, even as an infant, being pushed in a stroller. At first it was because of parent involvement, then it was to help make a difference. “I’ve been in the event since I was born. This will be my 14th year in the run. Since I have been in school, I participate in the school event, as well as the community Terry Fox Run. Sometimes that means twice a year,” said Gavin. “I never met my grandparents because they died before I was born. They had cancer, so I run every year in their honour, memory, and to support others who have cancer. It supports my mom as well,” added Gavin. The run (walk or ride) will take place at the Stoney Creek Centre starting at 11 a.m. Sept. 17, following a 10 a.m. registration. “I want to raise money to help out others who have cancer. I would like to raise at least $100, but I’m trying
for $150,” he said. He will be seeking his own pledges this year. “I want to show others that participating in this event helps others. It shows that younger people can get involved and help support families and other people. I have been in the run every year, so I also want to keep it (the streak) going. It shows how committed I am,” said Gavin. “If I can’t run on the day, I’ll try to do it the day before or after to keep participating in the run. I want to get the word out that you can be in the run even if you are in a school run.” Dawn has been on the organizing committee in Camrose for the past five years and about 20 years altogether. “I’ve helped her before and I could see myself helping more as I get older.” Terry Fox Run pledge sheets may be obtained online at terryfox.org. Receipts will be issued by the Terry Fox Foundation for anyone who makes a donation of $20 or more. There is no registration fee and no charge for participating. “I like running and it is a good way to stay in shape and train. In school you are with your friends and not running as hard. It has more of a
meaning if you do it outside of school as well.” The last couple of years the Terry Fox Run in Camrose has attracted between 75 and 100 participants, depending on weather. “We would like more than 100 this year and that is our goal,” added Dawn. “Some high schools don’t take part in the Terry Fox Run, so it is good to get younger people involved, so they will continue it outside of school.” Gavin challenges others to be in the event. “If you have family, or know of someone who has cancer, get involved in the run and honour their memory or life,” concluded Gavin. The Terry Fox Run was initiated in 1980 when Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope for cancer research. Beginning at the shore of the Atlantic in St. John’s on April 12, Terry’s efforts won over Canadians from coast to coast. Although the return of cancer in his lungs forced the end of the running portion of the Marathon of Hope on Sept. 1, Terry’s legacy was just beginning. His vision helped transform cancer research in Canada and establish a new attitude and threshold regarding what kind of investment was necessary in order to support it.

The Camrose Buffaloes Football Association will be hosting their second annual Football Day at Kin Park on Saturday, Sept. 17. Four football games are slated for the day. Atom Buffaloes White will face the Buffaloes Blue squad at 10 a.m.; peewee Buffaloes take on Fort Saskatchewan at 11 a.m.; bantam Buffaloes play against Fort Saskatchewan at 1:30 p.m. Two f lag football games (the younger players) will be held at 4 p.m. Buffaloes will have split squads to play Wetaskiwin and Beaumont. Besides the football, the CBFA board will be bringing the Edmonton Eskimos promotion team to the event. “The Eskimos will be bringing an inf latable obstacle course, games and prizes for children of all ages. A
few Eskimo players will be giving pep talks to the teams and will be available for autographs during the day,” said Rejeanne Matson, Buffaloes field coordinator. A concession, 50/50 draw, and a tailgate party package raff le will also be available with the proceeds going towards Camrose and Area Youth Risk Awa reness Network (CAYRAN) and the purchase of new helmets for the Buffaloes. “Come on out to the field Sunday and check out all the action and support your local football teams,” added Rejeanne. The last home set of games are slated for Sept. 23. Peewees take on St. Albert at 10 a.m. and the bantams play St. Albert at 12:30 p.m.

Impaired boaters charged Sept. 3
While on patrol on Driedmeat Lake, Camrose Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch officer, along with another officer, arrested an impaired boat opera-
tor. The boat and three occupants were towed to shore. The operator was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, and small vessels safety equipment violations.

Woman attempts to grab officer’s belt Sept. 11
Camrose police received a complaint of an impaired driver that had driven away from a licensed premise. The vehicle was located and the driver was arrested for impaired driving. While being arrested, the driver resisted and attempted to grab for the officer’s belt. Force was applied to gain control of the driver and she was taken into custody. The woman refused to provide
a breath sample and she was charged with impaired driving, refusal to provide a breath sample, and resisting arrest. Sept. 10
A complaint was received that a woman was screaming inside of a residence. Police attended and spoke with a couple inside of the home. The couple were having an argument and both were separated to avoid any further issues.
