Starting afoot with home improvement By Lori Larsen Fall is always a great time to consider home improvement projects. With the weather promising warm days and cooler nights working inside the home on reno projects can be much easier. Interior design technologist Krystle Mayer of Nufloors Camrose suggested that renovating can inject new life into your home. “As an interior designer, I always want to create a space that is aesthetically pleasing but also meets the needs of my clients,” said Mayer. “Finally, there is a flooring that is right on trend with design and is extremely durable for whatever life throws your way.”

Mike Ploner, Camrose Booster Sales consultant and interior design technologist for Nufloors Camrose, Krystle Mayer shows one of the many choices of flooring options. Luxury vinyl plank

Luxury vinyl plank flooring is the newest product in vinyl flooring. Using advanced printing and texturing the colors and patterns of vinyl plank have high definition and clarity for the look of real wood with a variety of options to suit any design. “There are also vinyl tiles available which resemble porcelain tiles,” added Mayer. “ This is a great option if you have existing hardwood or laminate in your home and you want a contrast from the wood grain. From modern to rustic, the range of options is endless.” FHI 2017 – Page 4

Advantages

Luxury vinyl plank flooring offers consumers some notable advantages. “All types of vinyl floors are resistant to water and now there are actually some products that are waterproof, so to speak,” said Mayer. “This is such a great feature. Now homeowners can feel confident investing in a great product for their basement areas as well.” Waterproof products offer homeowners a degree of piece of mind in the instances of spills, pet incidents or even floods occurring. “You can pull the floor up, dry it out, and re-install it. It is a pretty amazing concept and a lot less worry for the consumer.” As well as being waterproof, luxury vinyl plank flooring is durable and has a scratch resistant finish. “No flooring on the market is bullet proof. But the vinyl planks that we display provide exceptional resistance to everyday wear and tear. “A huge benefit to a loose lay, “Tight Fit” installation, is that if you do have damage to a plank, you simply pull it up, and install a new one. “I have vinyl plank installed in my own home and it is great to have a space where my daughter can play and I don’t have to worry about scratches or spills.” One of the most sought after benefits of any home installation is the ease of maintenance and vinyl plank flooring offers that to homeowners. “Let’s face it, nobody wants to spend more time cleaning than they have to,” commented Mayer. “With the Luxury Vinyl Plank, cleaning is a breeze. You just have to sweep, dust, or vacuum it thoroughly.” Mayer also advised that the correct cleaner must be used on the floor in order to maintain it at its best. “You don’t want to use any harsh chemicals or water and vinegar as these products can damage the finish on your flooring and even effect your warranty. Nufloors carries cleaning products for all types of flooring, as well as the appropriate mops.” Flooring is a large investment and consumers are advised to understand exactly what they are looking for and which product would best suit their needs. “Like most products, there are varying degrees to the quality of “similar looking” products. “Of course price is always a factor as well, but make sure you know what you are buying. A lot of the entry level vinyls out there will have a higher expansion and contraction rate. It is important to look into the stability of the product,” advised Mayer. “Some vinyls have a fibreglass core and this ensures stability. Also, be aware of emissions that can be caused by off gassing from materials. A quality product will have reports available to you on VOC (volatile organic compounds)ratings.” Luxury vinyl plank can be used in new home installation or renovations. “It is a great choice. You can achieve that high end look of hardwood with a lot more practicality,” noted Mayer.

Vacuum mulcher keeps your lawn looking great By Murray Green

If you are looking for the best way to keep your lawn looking great all year round a leaf vacuum mulcher is one of the best pieces of gardening equipment you could own. Keeping your lawn free from leaves and other debris is important to keep your lawn looking its best. While using a good old fashioned rake works well, it is not the best solution when you have a busy lifestyle. “Using a rake not only takes time, it also puts a strain on you physically, and then there is the problem of disposing of the leaves, this is where a leaf vacuum mulcher comes in handy,” said Peter Stevenson, manager of Bobcat of Camrose. After raking leaves in the fall take the additional step of shredding them with a leaf shredder, lawn mower, or other device. Continued on page 14 FHI 2017 – Page 12

Murray Green, Camrose Booster

Bobcat of Camrose manager Peter Stevenson demonstrates the use of a leaf shredder. With a powerful two stroke engine, you can reduce the volume of debris by a ratio of 12 to one.

Shredding leaves produces better compost Continued f rom page 12

“ Shredding leaves is a good idea rega rd less of whet her you r ma i n i nt erest is i n d isposi ng of t hem, producing leaf mulch, or producing compost,” suggested Peter. Most people who go through the trouble of shredding leaves do so for the pur pose of using them in the la ndscape, rather tha n disposing of them. T h is is sma r t , bec au se leaves a re biodeg radable a nd a wonder f ul source of orga nic matter with which to enr ich your ga rden beds a nd /or suppress weeds. If you do decide to dispose of the leaves that you ra ke up in fall, shredding them f irst mea ns there will be fewer a ir spaces when you pack them up. T he b e st mu lc hes a re p or ou s enough to per mit the penetration of a ir a nd water to the soil, thus promoting pla nt health.

FHI 2017 – Page 14

“If you ga rden orga nically, you will probably like the fact that leaf mulch will not rema in leaf mulch forever. L eaf mulch is just compost wa iting to happen. A s the leaf matter decomposes, valuable nutr ients will be released into the soil,” expla ined Peter. Comp ost pro duc t ion t h at do es not involve a str ucture set aside to house decomposing matter (ter med a compost bin). W hen you set out pr ima r ily to ma ke mulch, you end up with compost as a bonus. Some ga rdeners sk ip the mulch phase altogether a nd just place the shredded leaves directly into a compost bin, for the pur pose of brea k ing them down into orga nic matter as quick ly as possible. T he ty pical compost pile works best when aerobic orga nisms a re allowed to f lour ish. It is essential that the pile breathes.

Unsh redded leaves wou ld pack dow n a nd d isc ou ra ge t he aerobic orga nisms you need for ef f icient de composition. “ S ome p e ople u se a m ac h i ne called a leaf shredder to do their shredding. Some ty pes vacuum up the leaves, shred them, then gather them into a bag.” Mo st wo o d c h ipp er s a l so sh r e d le ave s ju st f i ne. T he wo o d c h ipp er i s t y pic a l ly mor e of a he av y dut y u n it . You ca n just r un your lawn mower over them to shred them. Not only is this a cheaper alter native, but, if you have a bag on your mower that collects g rass clippings, you do not sacr if ice a ny convenience.

Ashley & Nyla Painting and Contracting

Improve privacy and security at home By Murray Green

Living in close proximity to one’s neighbours has its benefits. But many homeowners would no doubt admit that privacy at home is a good thing. Whether homeowners are enjoying their yard in spring or summer or simply want their in-home activities to be less obvious to neighbours, their privacy is a year-round concern. If privacy is a concern, homeowners can take certain steps to ensure their homes stay or become the sanctuaries they were designed to be. Windows allow natural light to enter a home, but windows also enable neighbors and others to see into a home. If thieves are the ones looking inside, wide open windows present a security issue. Window treatments are an effective way to add privacy to a home. Closing curtains or blinds limits others’ ability to see inside the house. Switch to more opaque window treatments when using interior lighting more often, as gossamer draperies may still make it possible for outsiders to understand what’s going on inside the home if people and items are backlit. For those who do not want to compromise natural light, frosted windows can satisfy a desire for privacy. Windows can be purchased with frosting in place, and home improvement retailers sell various products that can create a frosted look. FHI 2017 – Page 18

Privet hedge, arborvitae or Italian cypress are fastgrowing evergreens that provide privacy around a home for homeowners who do not want to install traditional fencing. These trees also provide a natural habitat for various yard animals. Layering various plants of different heights and textures also can create a more natural and less imposing look. “Fencing remains a viable option to create privacy and stop noise pollution. Privacy fences come in various materials, colors and sizes, enabling homeowners to choose styles that fit their landscapes,” said renovations specialist Ashley Marriott of Ashley and Nyla Painting and Contracting. “No matter how well you get along with your neighbours, the last thing you may want when enjoying a beverage in the back yard with friends and family is your neighbour wandering over.” Homeowners who like to entertain outdoors may want to make their outdoor living spaces more private. “Pergolas allow light to filter through, but obstruct direct view of patio activity, especially when combined with some gauzy draperies hanging on the sides, or outdoor louvers.” Continued on page 20

A n enclosed patio or three-season room can be a worthwhile addition for homeowners who like to enjoy the great outdoors without being in the elements or on display for neighbours. Structures vary from screened-in porches to greenhouses to removable gazebos. Potted plants or trailing vines can soften the

structural edges and help the privacy devices blend in with the natural surroundings. Homeowners who do not want their neighbours, or others knowing what they’re up to in their free time can limit what they share through photos and descriptions on social media. Doing so also cuts down on neighbours’ curiosity.

The cooler fall and winter weather is just around the corner and homeowners can be somewhat better prepared by taking a few simple preventative measures against the cold and snow. The exterior Drain the water from your outdoor faucets and store away all hoses and other sprinkler equipment. If you have an inground sprinkler system arrange to have the pipes blown out. Turn off water valves to outside faucets to guard against bursting pipes in extreme cold temperatures. If you have had issues with pipes freezing in the past use heat tape to keep them warm during the winter months. Ensure all storm windows and doors are installed properly, maintained and in good repair. Windows may require additional caulking or weather stripping around them to protect against warm air escaping and cold air entering. Door draft stoppers can be used along the bottom of doors, both inside and outside to eliminate cold air entering. Adding insulation to your attic or basement may be a little expensive but it will also give you the largest return on your investment. Large amounts of heat can be lost through uninsulated, or under insulated, basements, crawl spaces, and attics. Maintain your gutters and downspouts on a regular basis. Clear out any leaves or other debris to ensure proper drainage. Installing gutter guards will assist in keeping debris to a minimum. Check gutters and downspouts for cracks or leaks that can cause water draining where it shouldn’t against your home. Lower humidity and cooler temperatures make for ideal conditions to paint the exterior of your home, deck or fencing. Continued on page 24

Thoroughly inspect your roof or hire a professional to check for normal wear and tear and any concern arising from inclement weather such as heavy rains, wind or hail. Replace any damaged, curling, buckling or cracking shingles. For severely damaged or aging roofs consider replacing it all. Examine skylights, chimneys, pipes and vents on your roof for leaks or gaps and repair with caulking or replace entirely if damaged beyond repair. Take this opportunity to clean out your garage making room available for parking vehicles during bad weather. Pack up and store, in a dry area, all patio and garden furniture. Replace furnace filters and consider having a professional inspect your furnace. Vacuum out your heat registers and ensure your cold air return is not blocked or dirty. Closing unused rooms and shutting the vents can re-route the warm air to other areas of the home while lowering your energy consumption. Have a programmable thermostat installed in your home to control temperature fluctuations in your home resulting in considerable cost savings on your energy bill. Remove, clean and store window air conditioning units and ensure the window is properly restored to avoid leaks. Saving energy equals saving money By Lori Larsen With today’s rising utility costs home owners are looking at new ways to create and maintain energy efficiency, healthy construction and sustainability in their houses. Beginning on the outside of the home owners have more choices for roofing and siding products that help to reduce energy usage. “For exteriors there’s been a huge jump in polar wrap products which can add an extra 3-5R value onto your home,” suggested Shawn MacKinnon from Five Star Home Solutions. “It’s only 3/8” thick so if you’re not changing your windows it is the answer to not putting one to two inches of foam insulation, which requires jamb extensions on most windows and other exterior modifications that can get expensive. “There are products on the market like (Celect Siding by Royal Building products) that are becoming very popular due to the bright colours, quality and R-value that never used to be available in a standard vinyl siding product at a competitive price.” Solar installations on roofs can make a huge impact on reducing energy consumption and now the products have become not only more technologically effective but cost effective as well. When we consider areas on our home that may cause issues when it comes to increasing energy consumption, openings such as doors and windows automatically come to mind. Most energy efficient windows have tighter seals and FHI 2017 – Page 26

a special glazing on the glass that keeps the exterior air outside where it belongs. “Hybrid windows are definitely starting to come in, though still more expensive then your traditional PVC triple pane windows. They offer more than two times the R-value by bringing the glass to the inside of your 2x6 wall and they are constructed with super spacers that make the overall glass insert 1-7/8” thick,” explained MacKinnon. Besides the efficiency of the window itself homeowners can consider window treatments such as blackout curtains, shutters and blinds that will help to diminish outside air coming into the home and light permeation. Home automation is becoming very popular. Not only can it be convenient but it is also healthy for the environment and your budget. Smart homes can cut energy costs by almost half. “One thing we are seeing lots of and, for the most part, is relatively inexpensive is the smart thermostats and smoke detectors. It is a great way to help with heating and cooling costs as well as at-your-fingertip safe alerts.” Other tips for reducing energy usage in your home consist of switching to better lighting. The government of Alberta is offering a new Energy Efficiency Alberta program encouraging Albertans to conserve energy through the latest lighting innovations, such as LED lights and power bars and other energy-efficient products. Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Hybrid windows offer enhanced rigidity structure and superior thermal efficiency.

Newer appliances generally use less electricity than older models and most are now Energy Star approved. As well low flow toilets and high efficiency plumbing fixtures such as faucets and shower heads are making big dents in homeowners’ energy bills all the while conserving one of our most valuable resources, water.

Using eco-fr iendly materials, such as bamboo which is an entirely renewable energy source, is quickly becoming popular choices with home owners. With all the new products on the market, today’s homes are, quite literally, saving our environment, not to mention our retirement funds.

Fall lawn care tips By Murray Green

Spring and summer may be the seasons most often associated with landscaping and lawn care, but tending to lawns and gardens is a year-round job. If lawn and garden responsibilities dip considerably in winter, then fall is the last significant chance before the new year that homeowners will have to address the landscaping around their homes. Fall lawn care differs from spring and summer lawn care, even if the warm temperatures of summer linger into autumn. Homeowners who want their lawns to thrive year-round can take advantage of the welcoming weather of fall to address any existing or potential issues. “Keep mowing, but adjust how you mow. It’s important that homeowners continue to mow their lawns as long as grass is growing. But as fall transitions into winter, lower the blades so the grass is cut shorter, while remaining mindful that no blade of grass should ever be trimmed by more than one-third. Lowering the blades will allow more sunlight to reach the grass in the months ahead,” said journeyman landscaper Cindy Carlson of The Little Yard Company. “Cutting the grass lower in the fall reduces the chance of snow mould and attracting mice.” Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen.

The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees. Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair material contains mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well. “Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots,” added Cindy. “While many homeowners and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centres and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing.” Fall lawn care provides a great reason to spend some time in the yard before the arrival of winter.

Nelson Homes take the worry out of building By Murray Green

The Embrook Show Home from Nelson Ready to Move Homes is a lovely three bedroom family build with 1,440 square feet. Take the worry out of building your dream home with the help of Nelson Homes. “You will enjoy the vastness of the open concept kitchen and dining area with plenty of space to create culinary masterpieces. Besides the abundance of cupboard and counter space, it has a large walk-in pantry,” said April Hartley of Nelson Homes. The kitchen connects with the spacious living room. Enjoy beautifully designed vaulted ceilings in the comfortable living space, as well as over the kitchen and dining area. The huge master bedroom includes a large walk-in closet and a separate standard closet as well as a handy three-piece en suite. Two other good sized bedrooms with big closets, a large main bathroom, second bathroom and a fantastic mudroom entry complete the main floor. “The extended roof provides a great seating area for your front desk. It gives you a country feeling, while enjoying the outdoors.” Save thousands by having your dream home pre-built and moved onto your property. Founded in 1949, Nelson Lumber has supplied building materials to western Canada for more than 68 years and has been building RTM homes since 2005. “Interiors can include laminate and vinyl plank floors, tiled floors, granite and quartz counter tops and cultured stone fireplaces. There are typically two things that can limit what they can put into your house; the homeowners’ imagination and their budget,” April added. The maximum building size can be 34’ wide by 92’ long and 28’ high when it is on the moving beams. All of the homes are delivered in one piece and rolled onto the foundation, which can be wood, concrete or ICF. There is no need for cranes or on-site work to put the house together once it arrives on site. The homes are virtually ready to move into, with the toilets set and fixtures hung. Just the mechanical, plumbing and electrical needs to be completed. Customers are involved in the building FHI 2017 – Page 30

process; from designing the home, selecting interior and exterior colors and meeting with the kitchen and flooring people to make the home match their needs. Pre-built homes range in size from 400 to 2,800 square feet. The availability changes frequently, so contact Nelson for a list of the current homes available, or check them out online at homes.nlc.ca and on Facebook. BEFORE YOU RENOVATE…

Consider a new home from Zetsen Master Builders!

Most people completely underestimate the cost of renovating a home! Renovation costs are typically significantly higher than the cost of new construction. After all, you must factor in demolition, trips to the dump, retrofitting and the inevitable…taking the renovation much further than you ever envisioned prior to going into the project. With over three decades of experience in the field, we suggest this – unless you live in an area that means the world to you, or unless your lot has an irreplaceable view or other significant advantage for you, build or buy new in lieu of renovating. It’s far more cost effective, your home will be far more energy efficient and you’ll enjoy full warranty, inside and out! Envision the compelling advantage of not living in mess and disruption for months, and ohhh, there’s nothing quite like the smell, feel and pride of a brand new Zetsen Master Builders’ home!

Now is a great time to have us build your first or next home. If you require financing, rates are near a historical low. We have a great selection of hand-picked lots in desirable Creekview and Valleyview West subdivisions. We’ve built a great team of reputable tradespeople ready to tackle your starter or dream home. Zetsen Master Builders’ design team creates masterpieces from scratch or will build any stock plan. We invite you to take a tour through any of our award-winning homes. We know you’ll be impressed.
