The weather last week was not particularly conducive to building (or leaving) elaborate scarecrows outdoors, therefore many of the creations at offices or retailers in Downtown Camrose remain indoors. Some are visible in storefront windows. The Downtown Camrose Fall Festival winds up on Saturday, September 30. One of the highlights is the opportunity for kids to attend The Peanuts Movie free of charge at the Bailey Theatre on Saturday, September 30.

Great things come in small packages By Lori Larsen If the size of someone’s power were determined by the measure of their goodwill, Vivian (Agnes as most people know her) Minnes is no doubt a power to be reckoned with. At the young age of 80-years-old, Agnes shows absolutely no signs of slowing down, especially when it comes to volunteering and making the lives of others better. “I was brought up by my grandmother and, as the years went by, I developed polio in the late 1940s and early 1950s. I spent two years in what started out as the Crippled Children’s Hospital in Calgary and was then moved into what is now the Alberta Children’s Hospital. “When it was time to go home, I didn’t want to go home,” remembered Agnes. “It kind of became home and I met a lot of friends who were in similar situations. To this day, I still keep in contact with some of them.” Having spent the tender years of ages 13, 14 and 15 in the hospital with no real visitors, Agnes developed compassion for anyone who has taken ill and has had to be in the hospital. It resonates deep within her to this day as she volunteers for the sick and visiting. “Ever since I can remember, if I know of someone who is ill or sick, I visit them,” said Agnes. “I will even go to their homes. I don’t do the flower bit any more. I usually take some homemade soup, chili, spaghetti sauce or something.” In 1975, Agnes and her husband Gordon (Gord) moved to Camrose after a posting in Cold Lake with the airforce. Not wanting to have to move with their two young children to Ottawa, the couple decided Camrose would be the ideal place to start anew and eventually settle. After 21 years, Gord decided to get out of the service. On a trip back to Cold Lake, the couple made a usual stop in Camrose where Agnes went into the Credit Union and asked them for a job. “I ended up 36 years with the Credit Union–five in Cold Lake and the rest in Camrose.” Having both been members of the Canadian Air Force, becoming members and subsequently volunteering for the Legion was a natural for Agnes and Gord. “My passion is with everything,” explained Agnes including going into her 21st year of seconding volunteers for the Legion bingos in Wetaskiwin. Agnes’ dedication to the Legion and all the good it
does within the community goes above and beyond. “I have pretty much worked 85 per cent of the Thursday night (Camrose) bingos, worked the Friday night branch meat draw and I’m in charge of rounding up the volunteers for the Friday night and Saturday afternoon meat draws. I also sell the Nevada tickets and work in the office every Saturday morning.” Agnes has 41 years
By Agnes’ calculations of records kept over the past 30 years (up to its 80th anniversary) the Camrose Legion Branch 57, Ladies’ Auxiliary and the Poppy Fund have donated $1.6 million to 61 different organizations in Camrose and area. Outside of the numerous hours Agnes puts in volunteering for the Legion functions, she cooks and bakes for Legion events including preparing her

under her belt as a dual member of the Legion with both Branch 57 and the Ladies’ Auxiliary (six years). Her financial background was a great asset to the Legion, but volunteering there was not all about numbers and scheduling. She also enjoyed being very active in the entertainment. “I helped there for at least 30 years making costumes, cooking, baking– you name it, whatever was needed. We used to have the Pig and Whistle comedy skits and we had a ball,” she said with a twinkle in her eye. Wednesday nights at the Legion had Agnes not only volunteering on the dart executive for 20 years or more, but she was a pretty serious competitor as well. “In the early 80s, I was on a dart team that won the provincial championships two years in a row.” And with a few perfect scores (180) under her belt, its obvious her petite stature never played a role in being unable to hit the inner ring of the 20. Fundraising is a vital part of what the Legion does to give back to the community and Agnes is a dedicated advocate of ensuring the goodwill continues.
famous jelly salad for over 300 guests during the Nov. 11 (Remembrance Day) lunch and dinner. Other areas of the community also benefit from Agnes’ generous gift of time. She is the treasurer for Rose City HandiVan. For nine years, she and Gord volunteered for Meals on Wheels and she, along with five other ladies (Joyce and Friends), sing at different seniors’ homes throughout Camrose. “It is so rewarding because they just can’t thank you enough,” she said humbly. And that is Agnes’ overall attitude about giving of one’s time and donating to good causes. “Everybody is welcome to come to the Legion,” she said. “It is not only a great way to enjoy activities, but a wonderful way to give back to the community.” On a final note, Agnes hopes the good feeling of volunteering continues in our community and world. “When you put your hand in a pail of water then take it out, the hole fills up.” Who do you know as a community Difference Maker? Hospital set for changes By Murray Green
Renovations to the emergency department at Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose will begin in early October. “If ever there was a time to make these renovations, now is the time. We are doing well with primary care, the number of doctors and hospitalists, so we can get patients out of emergency and into beds faster,” said Dr. Art Jaroni, St. Mary’s medical director. People will be asked to report to the triage station near the front entrance before registering and moving on to emergency. “We will be solving many concerns with the renovations. We can monitor patients easier,” said Dr. Jaroni. Continued on page 9

SERVING CENTRAL ALBERTA’S STORAGE NEEDS
Camrose cats to be sheltered By Lori Larsen
During the Sept. 18 regular council meeting, council voted in favour of the proposal request by Camrose and Area Animal Shelter Society that the City provide funds in the amount of $4,600 for the remainder of 2017 and $18,400 for each 2018 and 2019 to the shelter society as outlined in the Cat Shelter proposal presented to committee of whole council on Sept. 5. General manager of financial services Murray Hagan suggested the funds be taken out of the Community Assistance account. Councillor Bill Sears expressed some concern. “I’m not sure if that was the intent of the Community Assistance Fund. I think it is more culture and arts centred.” Mayor Norm Mayer, councillors PJ Stasko and Max Lindstrand agreed that the Community Assistance Fund was designed for other uses and voiced concern that if the funds were to be removed from
the Community Assistance Fund it would take away from arts and culture and other programs more appropriately designated for that account. “I am okay with it coming out of Community Assistance in 2017, but not 2018,” said Lindstrand referring to the 2018 curling event taking place in Camrose that will require funds from the Community Assistance account. Hagan proposed the funds be taken out of the Animal and Pest Control budget. “If this is a program that we are going to fund on an ongoing basis through budget deliberation then that is probably the area where we are going to set up this responsibility.” Hagan also suggested the City not commit to 2019 given the budget for that year has yet to be determined. Mayor Mayer acknowledged Hagan’s concern, but advised that the proposal presented by the animal shelter indicated it would
have to enter into a threeyear lease agreement with the owner of the building offering the space. Councillor Greg Wood asked for and received clarification that the City would not be responsible for the rental agreement of the leased facility itself, but would only be providing the funds to pay utilities, rent, licences and emergency fees through grant. Mayor Mayer added, “We would anticipate Camrose and Area Animal Shelter to provide statistics (as per the proposal presented to council for Option 2–Create a Shelter and Free Voluntary Cat Licensing) on an annual basis to continue qualifying in the years 2018 and 2019. On a separate item, council voted in favour of a motion to give a $2,000 platinum sponsorship to the Bailey Theatre fifth annual fall fundraiser. The funds will be taken from the Community Assistance account.

City Chase raises funds for Open Door
Post-zucchini
Last week’s column about trying to unload zucchini from grossly over-achieving plants prompted many fun conversations. I heard stories about new gardeners who’d planted 50 zucchini plants that took over their new garden; questions about whether I’d brought zucchini to a meeting; offers of recipes… The column made reference to “172 Things to Do with Zucchini.” This prompted my favourite of all the comments: “I have a zucchini sitting in my pantry. Thus far it is a door stopper. 173 things.” I’m still giggling. Change your habits, change your life? Brendan Burchard has just released a book called High Performance Habits: How Extraordinary People Become That Way. I haven’t read the whole book yet, but have heard a short talk and read a summary. The book is based on extensive research about the habits of people who not only achieve external “success,” but who have rewarding lives of happiness, good health and positive relationships, who help others as well as themselves. ***
In case you’re curious, here are snippets of the six habits Brendan Burchard identifies: SEEK CLARITY on who you want to be, how you want to interact with others, what you want, and what will bring you the greatest meaning. Ask questions such as “What kind of person do I want to be while I’m doing this?”, “How should I treat others?”, “What are my intentions and objectives?”, “What can I focus on that will bring me a sense of connection and fulfillment?” GENERATE ENERGY so you can maintain focus, effort, and well-being. Actively care for your mental stamina, physical energy, and positive emotions in very specific ways. RAISE NECESSITY for exceptional performance. This means actively tapping into the reasons you want to perform well, based on a mix of what matters most to you (e.g., your identity, beliefs, values, or expectations) and what matters to those around you (e.g., social obligations, competition, commitments, deadlines). INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY in your primary field of interest. Focus on prolific quality output in the area in which you want to achieve. Minimize distractions (including opportunities) that steal your attention. DEVELOP INFLUENCE with those around you. It will make you better at getting people to believe in and support your efforts and ambitions. Without a positive support network, major achievements over the long haul are all but impossible. DEMONSTRATE COURAGE by expressing your ideas, taking bold action, and standing up for yourself and others, even in the face of fear, uncertainty, threat, or changing conditions. Courage is not an occasional act, but a trait of choice and will. ***
I have mixed feelings about what I’ve read so far. On one hand, I appreciate that the research didn’t just focus on outward expressions of “success” but on a well-rounded life of happiness, health and positive relationships. I’m sure these six habits can enhance anyone’s quality of life. On the other hand, what I’ve read so far felt so much like “strive/drive” that I could feel myself getting tense just reading it! The phrase “high performance” caused me to do deer-in-the-headlights. Perhaps I’m looking for Six Habits of extraordinarily slothful, easily distracted, unfocussed people who lurch along as best they can in a life of reading fiction, having naps, puttering around and enjoying conversations with treasured people. Come to think of it, I probably know six habits for that life! A sobering thought: All my actions and habits have been perfectly designed and carried out to create exactly the life I have. And I’m not always happy, healthy or in positive relationships…I’m curious. Do you think there’s a laid back and relaxed way to an extraordinary life? Can you “flow” rather than “push” into a well-rounded life of external success, happiness, good health and positive relationships? Can you “be” extraordinary without “doing” extraordinary? Are different definitions and habits appropriate for different phases of life? What’s your take on habits that create the life you most desire? ***
I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send me an email at Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The first Camrose City Chase event was held on Sept. 16 and 17 teams comprised of four members completed a variety of tasks at different venues around Camrose. The redesign will improve emergency access, safety, flow and privacy throughout the patient journey. “The fact that staff can lay eyes on everyone in the department after the redesign, is extremely important,” said Cherylyn Antymniuk, St. Mary’s site administrator. Inconveniences will be expected for those attending the hospital this fall. “We don’t have the confidentially right now that we want. People in the waiting room are in close proximity to each other and our waiting area is in the hallway,” added Cherylyn. “The barrier walls that will be going up will create safety for staff and patients, and help with confidentiality.” The emergency department has been one spot that the hospital identified as needing an upgrade for a number of years. “The front line staff and physicians had input on what changes they wanted to see and we all worked together,” said Cherylyn. “We have patient surveys, so we receive feedback from them,” said Melissa Berg, patient care manager. “We definitely take their concerns into consideration.” Construction is expected to take about three months for the first phase. Most of the construction is expected to be completed around spring time of next year. “We have been lucky to have such a collaborative team here at St. Mary’s and having these discussions for a long time. We want to streamline the process to suit the patients the best. We do all this as a team,” said Melissa. Safety is a concern for both the staff and patients. Phase 1 also includes renovating the security room and changing a vacant area into a storage room. The cost for Phase 1 will be about $1 million. “We are looking at this as a long term fix. It will serve us for 20 years and is not a quick fix just for now. We will be prepared for the city growth,” said Cherylyn. “We have been waiting for this for a long time. We first talked about this 15 years ago,” said Michelle Solverson, emergency room manager. “I’m excited to see this happen during my time here. We are happy to have increased site lines and increased security.”

Have respectful communication with older adults Submitted by the Family Violence Action Society
Giving a little bit of special care and consideration will make communicating with older adults easier and more successful. There are physical and mental challenges that can come with aging, and can require both respect and thoughtfulness when getting your message across. While some older adults may be having trouble, it does not mean all older adults. The older population group is one of the most diverse. One 70-year-old is not like the next 70-yearold. Many people fall into the trap of being overaccommodating around older adults, based on stereotypes. Typical stereotypes are that: they cannot hear, cannot see and cannot understand just because
they are old. What can happen? People talk louder. They speak more slowly and with exaggeration. They pat older adults on the hand or head, use terms of endearment like “sweetie”, and heap on praise for doing simple tasks. Treating people like that can create an environment that is oppressive and condescending. While some hearing and vision loss are common in older adults, there is no guarantee that these will happen. Significant hearing loss in people over 75 will only be as high as 40 to 50 per cent of that population. It is important to remember that knowledge and wisdom will not decrease as people age. Older adults are still people and want to be treated as such. Continued on page 11

What can we do to make communication easier? Compromised vision can be helped by using a larger font in print materials, use a lot of white space instead of large blocks of text. Limit visual distractions like different colours or elaborate fonts. Talk to older adults in a normal voice. If they cannot hear you, they will let you know. Compromised hearing can be helped by reducing background noise and distractions. Face them so your lips are on the same level as theirs to make it easier to read your lips. Make eye contact to let them know you are engaged in the conversation. Engage them in decisions. Instead of “You need to take your medication”, you could ask “Can I help you with your medication today?” Most importantly: Be Aware. Be aware of any stereotypes that you may have about older adults. Do not let the stereotypes guide your conversations with them. Be aware that you are speaking with the individual human being in front of you, and not with a generalization. How can you best talk with this person in front of you? What are their needs and wants? Remaining thoughtful about how you are communicating will help you give the older adults you encounter the care and respect they deserve.

Stolen truck Sept. 22
Police conducted a traffic stop and the male passenger was listed as being bound by a curfew as well as a condition not to leave the province of Nova Scotia. Camrose Police were not able to confirm his conditions with the RCMP until later and the male will be charged with breaching his conditions. At 1:25 a.m. police received a motion alarm at Lamb Ford. Police quickly responded and upon arrival located a 2008 Chev Silverado idling in the parking lot with the driver’s door open. Police also observed that an entry door into the business had been pried open. After ensuring that no suspects were inside the business, police then determined that a bronze 2017 F350 Superduty had been stolen from within the building. Checks on the Chev Silverado idling in the parking lot indicated that it was stolen from a body shop in Viking.
had been altered. Police also located alcohol in the vehicle which the male had a condition not to possess.

Band of Rascals set to play Bailey Theatre By Murray Green
Band of Rascals is bringing its dynamite live rock show to the Bailey Theatre on Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. The Band of Rascals will be featuring songs from its latest album release Tempest as part of the Rose City Roots Music Society concert series. They are a straight up rock and roll band that is a fusion of explosive drums, driving guitars and great vocals. The Victoria, BC based four-piece group has quickly established itself as a major force in the western Canadian music scene as the result of an overwhelmingly successful
year of sold out shows, multiple festival slots and the release of their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album. The Band of Rascals blend hard-hitting modern rock with the vintage aesthetic of southern blues. The release of Tempest will take place Oct. 13, but Camrose music fans will get a preview of the new release. Tempest is a follow up to the 2014 self-titled debut that contains six new tracks and includes the new single “Holler,” which is available for listening on iTunes.

The Chuck MacLean Arts Centre is proud to feature Wire Sculptures created by Norman J. Kuhn. The show will be on display until Nov. 13. The idea of the show came after a meeting with Norm and his partner Cherril. Norm brought several samples of his work and I was so impressed that I asked if he would be willing to teach a class. It was decided that because this is not a wide spread medium it might be a good idea to host a show of his work in conjunction with the workshop so people could see for themselves what it entails. The show features both three and two dimensional work and depicts everything from trees to animals to figures and more. The workshop will take place on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 1 to 6 p.m. Students will learn to create a 3D dragonfly. For cost and details call 780-6729949. Curious about how Norm came to begin working with wire here is what he said. “Over the years I have always been attracted to anything artistic and am fortunate enough to be able to
produce passable and sometimes even amazing pieces. I have worked with wood, paint, glass, ink, and pencil– pretty much anything that would produce interesting and beautiful effects. But, I have never really found the “one”–that one type of material that I can’t put down, that moves my artistic soul and that always inspires, no matter what is going on in my world. I found it very recently and it is simple, uncomplicated wire! I can look at a spool of wire just sitting there and make into a thousand and one beautiful pieces in my mind and when I begin bending, everything else fades away the wire bends to my designs, my vision, my soul. I have been known to ignore bodily function while working and often look up after working on a piece surprised that the sun is setting. This medium works for me and allows me to express myself and show the world my view. I tend to concentrate on the human or animal form but even inanimate objects will occasionally catch my fancy. Continued on page 26
Nikolai has performed on the shores of three oceans, and the ice of the Arctic. He was part of the Canadian contingent at the Nanjing Clown Festival. He is enthusiastically received by large crowds at festivals around the world, and has performed in North America and Europe for audiences of up to 10,000. In Edmonton he is a perennial audience favorite. Most entertaining is the pure silliness of it all. Nikolai is thrilled to bring his circus skills and showmanship to Camrose for an exciting evening of crackling comedy on Friday, Sept. 29 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. There is no charge for this event. However, you must have a ticket to attend. Tickets are available at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre, or the Lougheed Centre box office while quantities last. Camrose and District Craft Centre will be holding an open house on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Camrose Community Centre (4516–54 Street). You can enjoy tours, refreshments, and demonstrations from the craft centre members. A Photography Show and Sale hosted by the Camrose Camera Club will take place on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. Local members of the camera club will have beautiful photographic slide shows and static displays at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre (4809–52 Street). Admission is by donation. A perogy supper will be held at the All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Parish (5402– 53 Street) on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 4 to 7 p.m. Proceeds support the church’s orphanage mission in the Ukraine. The meal features perogies, cabbage rolls, meatballs, pork roast, salads, pickles and dessert. “The government is proud to be a supporter of the amazing events being planned this year and I am excited to see what Alberta’s communities have in store. Culture Days showcases how our communities, our history and our culture are important parts of our identity and economy, and how they make life better for Albertans. It is fitting that the 10th anniversary coincides with Canada 150, because the themes of both, such as youth and diversity, are so closely aligned,” said Ricardo Miranda, minister of culture and tourism. This year, 68 organizations have been named as official celebration hosts, including five Feature Celebration sites that will be offering three days of activities.

The gentle giant with an undeniable ability to make children feel good about themselves will be bringing many years of honing his music and a love of entertaining children to the stage. At the early age of four, Penner began making up songs while travelling on the bus with his mother. Continued from page 17

Lindstrand lends his experience to city council By Lori Larsen
City of Camrose councillor Max Lindstrand is running for one of the eight positions on council. Lindstrand was born in Camrose and was raised on a farm north of the city. He attended Camrose Lutheran College, the University of Alberta and the University of Montana and enjoyed a career as a teacher, vice-principal and principal for 36 years. Lindstrand has gained a great deal of experience
with municipal governance and the operations of the City of Camrose as a councillor since 2007. He is married to wife Alice (retired teacher) and they have lived in the same house in Camrose since 1974. They have two children–Jon and Jen (both teachers). Their daughter-in-law LauraJoy is a nurse and they are proud grandparents to grandson, Sevrin, who is a student in Grade 5.
Lindstrand loves to travel and meet people. “I am running for reelection because I believe that my experience on council (three terms) has provided me with valuable, useful knowledge about the city and I have a commitment to maintaining the beautiful city that we call home.”
As well, Lindstrand has a desire to complete important projects like the renovation and expansion of the swimming pool. “I have an interest in advocating for the needs of all residents.” You can contact Max Lindstrand at malind@ telus.net or 780-672-2667.
Liberal tax grab on all local businesses By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot
Parliament has reconvened in Ottawa and the issue of most importance in the debates in the House of Commons is the Liberal government’s planned attack on middle-class farmers and local businesses. I have written about this issue in a recent column, yet, this planned “cash grab” by the Liberals continues to be very discouraging across our riding of Battle River-Crowfoot, our country and, in Parliament. While the Liberals insist they are trying to make sure “wealthy” Canadians pay more tax, their plan is not a ‘level playing field’ when it comes to fair taxation. It means our local businesses including family farms, will have a tax rate higher than anyone else. Justin Trudeau promised to lower small business taxes, instead, he raised them. Big publiclytraded companies will continue to pay low tax-rates. Everyone in our riding knows about the difficulty rural communities have recruiting and retaining medical doctors. This is an age-old challenge that all rural and remote communities struggle with all over Canada. The response of rural and remote communities large and small has always been to offer incentives to attract doctors. This approach works to a certain extent and municipal governments do all they can to accommodate medical practitioners including new graduates, who show an interest in establishing a medical practice in one of our communities. Our ability to attract doctors is severely reduced without their having the ability to incorporate their business and re-invest in it in order to recoup–over many years–their massive investment and start-up debt load. Without being incorporated, it would take many years for a doctor to expand a small practice. Few jobs could be created to support the doctor’s work. Patients suffer as they have less access to medical services. Stand-alone medical clinics become even more difficult to establish and sustain. The Liberal’s new tax system will have many consequences. If you’re young person looking for your first job, you’ll have fewer local businesses that can afford to hire you; If you’re a farmer, it will be more complicated and expensive to pass your farm down to your children (and grain cash-deferrals to the next year may be eliminated); If you’re an entrepreneur, it will be harder to save for your retirement, and; If you need a family doctor, it will be harder to find one. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or previous columns you may write me at 4945-50th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780-608-4600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780608-4603 or e-mail Kevin.Sorenson.c1@parl.gc.ca.

Massick challenges mayor spot By Lori Larsen
Running for the position of City of Camrose mayor in the upcoming municipal election is newcomer Wayne Massick. “I have been in Camrose since late 1978,” said Massick. “I started in Evraz in 1980 and retired from there in 2011 after 31 years.” Through his work with Evraz, Massick became a Millwright by trade. “I am versatile in the job market and it was nice to have had that start. At the moment I am unemployed.” As the president of the union of Evraz, for a few years, Massick said he had many people underneath him that relied on what he negotiated and what he did in the community. Massick’s main agenda item involves fiscal responsibility. “We have to get it under control. There is no reason we can not balance the books every year.” Massick referred to the increase of 1.6 per cent in tax rates this year. “It is kind of horrendous to hear that. You should be able to balance the books. “I’m not ripping on Norm Mayer. There are a lot of departments there. Although he is in charge, he should be able to rein in some of it.” Massick second platform is that of health services offered in Camrose. “One of my other items that I have been working on
for years, with a letter writing campaign to the minister of health in the province, is trying to get kidney dialysis here in town and I think with the mayor chair behind me on my next letter it might help get one here.” Massick indicated that people needing kidney dialysis (in Camrose and area) have to go to Wetaskiwin or to Edmonton. “This is Camrose, we are a city. We have everything else including a cancer treatment area. But as soon as your system starts to shut down and you need dialysis you have to go somewhere else. “This is the stuff the mayor can be active in. Looking after the people when they are at their lowest and weakest.” The third item in Massick’s agenda was that of social programs in Camrose. “I also stand on getting our social programs up and running to par.
“I live over at 4907(56 Street) by the Mirror Lake Centre, used to be senior centre. I have a young man he’s living in a garage there and a number of us have called the city. You shouldn’t live in a garage, number one, there are no facilities. Lets get all the services helping this person. Walk in with human resources and things like that.” Massick said it is important to promote preventative social programs. “Go right to the source. These are the things a mayor, in his position, can promote– preventative things.” As an example Massick referred to the Camrose Women’s Shelter. “I hate the Women’s Shelter because of what it does. It is taking care of a problem after it happens. I love all the people and what they do there and support them wholeheartedly, but I hate that kind of set up. The shelter itself is good, but I hate what it represents. I am a man who has to walk in this community by a shelter that is, for most of all, women who have come across hard times–beaten or abused and the children are there with them. “The point in the long run, is to start, along with the women’s shelter and backing them 100 per cent, (other social programs) in the beginning.”

Right Person I bring the experience on issues (past, present and future) to assist Council analyze and ultimately make tough decisions. We will continue to base our choices on what is deemed best for all Camrosians.
Right Time My goall iis to serve you one M more term. I want to ensure the swimming pool renovation / expansion project does not get derailed. I want to see the 48th Avenue bridge replacement project conclude as per plan and established timeline. My objective is to ensure our massive road / sidewalk improvement project remains intact without interruption. I want to make sure Camrose Council does not get carried away with spending money we don’t or may not have. I believe in affordability!
Right Reason We’ve got an amazing city. It’s well-planned. We have created Camrose as a city for the arts, entertainment, as a regional health care centre, as a desirable place for advanced education and it’s noted as a wonderful place to work, raise a family, retire or do business. Our reputation did not happen by accident. During the current Council term we created viable transportation options, improved our roadways, reduced our debt and created a new atmosphere of spirit and cooperation as never before. I’m proud of this city and the work we’ve done in a few short years. Help me help you bring four more years of responsible financial oversight and great governance to the City we all love to call our home.
Ever y vote Norm O N forMayer counts ! X
I think Council has just completed a highly productive and effective term…
NOW IT’S TIME TO PLAN AHEAD COUNT ON ME TO: LISTEN – As your representative, I need to hear what’s on YOUR mind MAKE DECISIONS – based on the greater good of the overall community FOCUS – on the future needs of this city and citizens
MY AREAS OF FOCUS: • ensure our pool renovation / expansion remains on track / on budget • continue to invest in improved roads and sidewalks in the City • other infrastructure investment including the planned wastewater facility upgrade
MY CONCERNS: • I want to spend more time on a solution to reducing heavy truck traffic through the city • I believe we need to investigate a second water source solution, bearing in mind Dried Meat Lake water is currently the only source • Disruption of the path set by Council over the current term
I value your concerns and treasure your support!
HYCHA, Kevin
It has been a privilege to serve the citizens of Camrose as City Councillor for the past 4 years. Much has been accomplished but the work we began is not yet finished. Additional resources have been allocated for much needed road repairs, we have a “made in Camrose” transit system and we have modernized our budgeting system. Additional large infrastructure projects are on the horizon. One of the biggest challenges faced by the next Council will be attempting to balance the needs and wants of our community with an already heavily taxed population – both residential and commercial. I would be honoured and grateful if I could count on your support again to continue this important work.
I
believe that it is imperative that the Mayor and Council have fiscal responsibility as one of their primary goals and a continued focus on the “core” needs of Camrose, being roads, water and sewer.

Thirty-one years of teaching taught me a thing or two… We need to be open-minded and receptive about minor or major changes to our educational system. •
Kids learn best from experiences in learning.
•
We must embrace technology. Virtual learning presents untold opportunities (and affordable pricing.)
•
We have to be prepared to accept that others in education, world-wide, have figured out better ways to teach, and for students to learn. We can’t be scared or shy to borrow the best techniques from South Korea, Finland, or elsewhere.

RE-ELECT
MAX LINDSTRAND to City Council on October 16th
It has been a pleasure to serve the City of Camrose as a councillor for the past three terms. I am seeking re-election for another term. Your continued support at the polls is greatly appreciated!
If re-elected, my priorities include: ✓ Listening to the concerns of all people ✓ Continuing to promote upgrades to our roads and other infrastructure ✓ Adjusting property taxes to be similar to other communities in Alberta ✓ Ensuring that we are decreasing our debt and increasing our reserves ✓ Encouraging orderly growth, including the downtown core ✓ Supporting cultural and recreational opportunities, including the new upgraded swimming pool ✓ Advocating for affordable housing and transportation for low income residents
For excellent representation on City Council, please vote to Re-elect Max Lindstrand on October 16.
LINDSTRAND, Max
By Lori Larsen
Camrose resident Julie Girard announced her intention to run for City of Camrose council in the upcoming October municipal election. “I want to help our community connect and work together to achieve growth and success for everyone,” stated Girard. In her position as president of the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce, she has been working to bring the City’s various business communities together to work on common issues and to promote the community. “One of the biggest things I would like to do is to reconnect people to their City coun-
cil,” explained Girard who said Camrose residents have a great deal of pride in their community, yet seem to be largely disconnected from its local government and the decision-making process. “We need to see ourselves as one community, growing as a single unit with participation by all age groups.” Girard expressed that a city councilor needs to be present in the community and speak with a voice that represents a broad perspective. “Government should always be about the people and if you are not present with the community, how are you going to know what is needed? You need to be at the community table which not only includes business, but individuals, families, sports and art groups, youth, the health and education community, and much more.” Aside from striving for economic development, Girard feels Camrose also needs to stand out as, not only a industry-friendly community, but an exciting and progressive place appealing to young people and families. “As a city, we need to be prepared to compete for people in a global marketplace in the same way that our businesses compete with others through Alberta, across Canada and around the world.” Girard says that to accomplish this, Camrose City council and its members need to do everything they can to promote Camrose at all levels. They also must be prepared to carefully consider all the elements that make a successful community, including a competitive tax structure, a business-friendly environment, youth and family-friendly services and open government. Girard came to Camrose in 2011 and is the manager of the Camrose Cornerstone Starbucks. “There are a thousand little things that I love about living in this city.” In addition to serving as Chamber president, she has also volunteered as a member of the Physician Attraction Committee and Municipal Planning Committee. Girvan wants a brighter educations future for students
By Murray Green
John Girvan is letting his name stand as a candidate for public school trustee in the Battle River School Division because he wants to make a difference. “I strongly believe in inclusion and tolerance. I have a proven record of being a good listener and in community involvement,” said Girvan. “As the public school trustee for Ward 3, Camrose County North, I bring a wealth of experience and knowledge, my personal commitment to lifelong learning and will represent every student and school for the better-
ment of our future and community. I am about the broader picture and every decision I make will be made in the best interests and needs of the students in the Battle River School Division.” Girvan was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and immigrated with his mother to Canada via Pier 21 in Halifax, NS; with his father having preceded them to Edmonton where he was employed in the petroleum industry. “I grew up in Sherwood Park and graduated from Salisbury Composite High School. After high school, I worked for the Alberta Forest Service before putting myself through the Renewable Resources Program at the Kelsey Institute for Applied Arts and Sciences, in Saskatoon, SK.” Following graduation, he was employed as a wildlife officer for 22 years. “Our family moved to an acreage in the Miquelon Lake area in 1989, when I was promoted to staff officer at the Edmonton headquarters. Sherley William Batke February 12, 1924 ~ September 21, 2017 Mr. Sherley Batke of Rosalind passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at the age of 93 years. He was born to Charley and Emma, the youngest of four children, Fred, Lillie and a sister lost to acute pneumonia at the age of four. Sherley was a “surprise” being born 16 years after the birth of Fred. Sherley stayed on the farm that his father had homesteaded in the spring of 1903, raising chickens first, then switching over to turkeys until the late 1980s. At age 64, Sherley began working on the construction of the “Double Damn” golf course and opened the first nine holes in 1989, with the back nine coming in 1995. Sherley was well known for his sense of community spirit, always willing to do more than his share to help individuals or the community. Whether it was through the advice he could offer, wisdom he could share or through financial contributions, Sherley was always willing to help. Sherley thoroughly enjoyed his close friends who he treated like family, and the community he loved so much. His everpresent smile and the kindness shown to all ages has been greatly appreciated and will be deeply missed. At Sherley’s request, no formal service will be held. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

In 1998, I obtained a position at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (then Agriculture and Food) as the head of compliance for the Diversified Livestock Branch and in 2003, became the head of Epidemiology and Toxicology in the Food Safety Division until my retirement,” said Girvan. “During my tenure, I attended the intensive management program at the Banff School for Management and in 2007, my team and I were awarded the Premier’s Award of Excellence (silver) and the Department Gold AAPEX award for outstanding teamwork for our work in BSE surveillance and recovery.” Girvan and his wife Marian are co-owners of MoonDruid, a local berry self-pick and market garden. They have been in operation since 2010 and market produce and products at the Camrose and District Farmers’ Market.

Most of the time, the human forms have a facial suggestion but nothing that is clearly defined, each one expresses an emotion, a feeling I may have had while making the piece but ultimately the interpretation of the viewer is what gives my piece its life. I have never worked with anything that is as effortless as the wire is...everyday there is inspiration and it often comes out of the blue. Wire is very freeing for me. I am able to express myself in a way that words don’t allow. I have used an
iconic image, for example Atlas holding up the world, and made a wire image that, to me at least, is a truer view of what it would be like to hold the whole world on my shoulders. It is crushing, it is tiring, and the person holding up the world is hanging on by a thread. In the same way, I have produced trapeze artists that are light, free and express a trust in another person that most people never experience. Each piece fills a void that I very often didn’t know was there. These pieces are personal to me but also allow the viewer to share

Machinery Day demonstrates technology of days gone by
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Visitors to the Camrose and District Centennial Museum had an opportunity to see how things used to run in an era gone by during Machinery Day held on Sept. 17. Pictures clockwise. Will Voth worked on a Goold Shapley and Muir water pump motor. Dawn Lawson demonstrated how soap was made prior to the introduction of elaborate machines and computers to onlooker seven-year-old Thierry Kristenson. Twoyear-old Emmi Rinas was fascinated by the pile of wheat seeds on the old grain truck. Museum volunteers 15-year-old Ethan Hardy and Kyle Meyer demonstrated the fine art of blacksmithing to visitors of Machinery Day. Bill Sears pitches a fork full of hay onto the feeder belt of the old threshing machine during a demonstration held on Machinery Day on Sept. 17 at the Camrose And District Centennial Museum. Jai Williams takes a spin at showing visitors to the Camrose and District Centennial Museum Machinery Day, the glory of machinery from days gone by.

Felzien enjoys his 1930 working man’s truck By Murray Green
Ron Felzien of Forestburg purchased a Ford 1930 AA truck. It features a rare express box. Usually it came with a flat box or stock racks for heavier hauling. It is a longer box than what was standard in those days. “This is a one-ton truck that looks like a pick-up. It has the heavier chassis. The box is unique to that truck and specially made for that size,” explained Ron. As the Model T and TT became obsolete and needed to be replaced, Henry Ford began initial designs on the Model AA back in 1926. Basic chassis layout was done rapidly and mechanical development was moved forward quickly. Body design and style was developed and then outsourced to various body manufacturers, including Briggs and Murray. The designs of the Model A shared parts and materials with the Model AA Ford, notably the body, engine and interior. “I just recently acquired this truck from Calgary and it was restored by the Model A Stampede Club in Calgary. I purchased it through a silent auction and probably paid too much, but you couldn’t restore it for what I paid,” he suggested. “I was attracted to the uniqueness of the truck, the size and shape of it. Usually, you can find pick-up trucks restored, but a larger truck is harder to find. These were the workhorses of that time period.” The AA usually received plainer interiors than their car counterparts. The Model AA followed similar design changes to the Model A during the AA’s four years in production (1927-32). The mechanical changes and upgrades were done during production of the vehicles. Body changes that occurred between 1929 and 1930 were also integrated into AA production, but leftover parts were used longer in the heavy commercial trucks. “I was told that it was found in a farmer’s field and they completely restored it from two piles of pieces,” Ron shared. “It took about 12 years to put it

back together by members who met once a week.” The Model AA Ford is powered by the same 201-cubic-inch (3.3 L) I4 engine that the Model A Ford used. The engine produced a maximum of 40 horsepower at 2,200 rpm. The engine featured an updraft carburetor, six-volt generator, two blade fan, mechanical water pump, mechanical oil pump, electric starter and four-row radiator. All of these features were identical to the Model A Ford except the radiator. “The vehicle is all stock. It features running board that starts at the front fender and goes all of the way to the back fender, which adds another unique feature. The spare tire is actually original and came from Florida. The club members had to search all over North America to find pieces.” The engine could also be crank started if necessary by a hand crank that is inserted through a hole in the radiator shell. The Model AA was based on a chassis that was similar
in design to the Model A Ford, except it was substantially larger and heavier to accommodate the work this truck was designed for. “It is a pleasure to drive. It has a three speed and you have to know how to double clutch,” Ron said. It had a three, or fourspeed manual gearbox. The transmission was geared lower than the Model A Ford to provide more torque to move a loaded truck. This lower gearing reduced the top speed of the truck. The transmission also featured a lock-out on the shift knob for reverse that required a lever to be activated with the thumb, so reverse could be engaged. “I like the bright red and solid black colours. The trucks always had black fenders. If you look inside the cab you will notice that the roof has chicken wire and that is the way they came. A board frame was made on top and they attached chicken wire to it. They put foam on it and then vinyl. The restorers wanted to keep it as close as possible to original.”
During the production of the Model AA, the wheels were also changed. In 1930, a new style 20 inch five slot disc wheel was adopted. These wheels were used for 1930 and part of 1931. “I like to go to car shows and I have other vehicles that I take as well, but try to keep
to local shows. I prefer fixing and appreciating them, over showing them,” said Ron. In some countries, like Uruguay and Cuba, Model AA trucks are still in use, more than 80 years after their introduction.

Tips when driving in rainy conditions By Metro
Rainy weather can arrive any time of year. While an afternoon spent indoors watching the drops fall can be relaxing, driving in the rain is anything but. It requires extra concentration and improved reaction time. Rainy conditions can be challenging and treacherous, and drivers should proceed with caution on rain-slicked roads. Rain is blamed for many accidents, but many of these situations are largely preventable among drivers who adapt to the weather and roadway conditions. Here are some things to consider. Reduced visibility occurs from wiper blades, glare (particularly at night) and heavy downpours. When you are unable to see the road ahead, including other vehicles, reduce your speed. If the rain is coming down in torrents, pull over to the side of the road and wait for a respite. Turn on your lights to ensure you are visible to other cars on the road. Recognize that rain can cause slick conditions. A film of water develops on the roadways, and that can affect the performance of your vehicle’s tires. Less traction means the car can slip and slide. Hydroplaning, or coasting on the surface of the water, is common. Another, lesserknown condition is slickness caused by grease and oil in the asphalt. During
a long dry spell, these substances build up on the roads. When it rains, the oil and water doesn’t mix, bringing the oils to the surface and exacerbating slick conditions. The first few hours of a rainstorm can be quite dangerous until heavier rains wash the oils away. Water spraying up onto tires and brakes can compromise braking ability. That means it could take longer to stop under wet conditions. Do not tailgate and leave extra room between vehicles. If you drive through a puddle of water, pump the brakes and test them out to be sure you can stop. Brake earlier so that other drivers understand your intentions and can react accordingly. Avoid extremely large puddles. First of all, you cannot judge the depth of the puddle and you may end up getting stuck, especially in the event of roadway flooding. Water splashing into the engine compartment may damage electrical components. Steer around puddles to be on the safe side. Use extra care watching out for pedestrians. A normally observant person may be distracted by the rain, puddles and wrangling an umbrella and veer into the path of cars. Be mindful of the side of the roads and where pedestrians may be, such as around parked cars.

Car trouble By Metro
Sudden car trouble is something no driver wants to experience, but may require motorists to think as quickly and safely as possible. When car trouble strikes while a vehicle is on the road, the first thing many drivers do is check their fuel gauges. If you can pull over to the shoulder or make it to the nearest filling station, then this unfortunate situation can be remedied rather easily. The following are a few simple tips motorists should keep in mind so they can safely handle any car trouble that may arise while they are out on the road. Keep a first-aid kit, spare tire and tire jack in the car at all times. Always keep a jack and spare tire in your car, even if the spare is a donut you can temporarily use to replace a flat tire until you make it to a filling station or automotive supply store. As an added safety measure, keep a fully stocked first aid kit in your vehicle in case you cut yourself while changing the tire or need to address another medical situation. Visit www.redcross.org for a list of items to include in your automotive emergency kit. Keep a blanket in the trunk as well so your passengers can stay warm should you experience car trouble on a cold day or night. Some car troubles can only be fixed by the professionals, so pay careful attention to your surroundings in case an issue arises and forces you to pull over and call for help. Pull over. Don’t panic if an issue arises suddenly. Remain calm and pull over onto the shoulder. The right shoulder is the area for pulling over on most roads, but you may also use the left shoulder on multilane highways with medians. Try to get as far away from traffic as possible without driving off of level ground, and always use your signals when pulling onto the shoulder. If the vehicle can’t make it to the median, put your emergency flashers on and get out of the car, moving away from both the vehicle and traffic. Immediately call for emergency roadside assistance, alerting the authorities if need be. Use flares or triangles to alert other drivers. So long as you are not risking your well-being, you can place flares and/or warning triangles behind your vehicle so oncoming traffic knows to drive around it. The popular not-for-profit motor club AAA recommends placing the first

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

The Camrose Composite High School Trojans football team dropped its home opener 41-6 to Drayton Valley on Sept. 15. “We just didn’t execute our plays. In the first half we stayed with them, only down 7-0 at the half. But, we were not executing either,” said Trojans head coach Adam Belanger. “Our defence made some stops. We gave up a touchdown on the first play of the game and then they settled in and started playing well.” It was all downhill after half-time. “It was poor execution in the second half and we didn’t have command of the line on the line of scrimmage, it something we need to make sure we do,” shared the coach. “Without the line of scrimmage, we were not able to do anything. We had some guys play well like our defensive halfbacks, who shut down the outside run and forced them inside. Unfortunately, our flow wasn’t there to clean it up.” CCHS scored a touchdown late in the game to bring some positive to the offence. “It was important for us and Dorian made a really nice catch and run. I thought he was going to score right there, but they made a nice play to stop him. Then Nick just punched his way in. I think he was hit right away, but he was able to will his way in to score.” Coach Belanger said the team will break down the film and they will make adjustments for the next game. “Two weeks in a row we have had a problem keeping the edge and we need to adjust that.” The Trojans fundraising discount cards are now for sale from any of the players and staff. The Trojans host Rocky Mountain House on Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. and the Ponoka Broncs on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. OLMP Royals

Assault victim treated Camrose police responded to a complaint of a domestic on Mount Pleasant Drive where the involved male had already fled the residence. The female victim had been assaulted and was taken to St. Mary’s hospital for treatment of her injuries. It was determined that there were previous occurrences that were unreported to Police. The 25-year-old male was later located and charged with three counts of assault, uttering threats and unlawful confinement. He is in custody waiting on a bail hearing. A traffic stop was conducted on a 50-year-old male driver known to police as having a suspended license. During the stop police observed a
female in the passenger seat who indicated that she was 19 years of age. The female did not know the driver but had replied to his on-line ad indicating that he was operating a ride share business. Unbeknownst to the female, the driver was bound by a court condition not to contact or communicate with any person under 20 years of age. The male was arrested and charged with breaching his strict conditions and he remains in custody. The Camrose Police Service would like to remind the public that anyone advertising or offering transportation for a fee without a taxi business license is in contravention of city bylaws.
