LICENCE NEEDS

Camrose Registry is here to help you, in registering a vehicle, obtaining a driver’s licence, a marriage or raffle licence, or conducting lien and land title searches.

“We have a great, friendly team here that strives to provide the best possible service,” said manager Karen Dammann.

“We’re willing to go that extra mile to help with fast friendly service and get customers back on their way.”

VEHICLE REGISTRATION

If you buy a car that was previously registered in Alberta, you must register it under the name/names that is on the bill of sale. You will be asked for three documents: the original bill of sale with signatures of the buyer and seller or lease documents, your proof of insurance, and your identification.

If you are registering a brand new vehicle that has never been registered before, you will need those three documents plus the New Vehicle Information Statement (NVIS), provided by the auto dealership.

“The provincial government is no longer sending out reminder notices for your vehicle and driver’s licence renewals.

But we can help you with that,” says Karen. “The Camrose Registry website (www.camroseregistry.com) offers an E-Reminder link. With this link, you can sign up for reminder notices by email or text for your vehicle registration and your driver’s licence. This website is also a good resource for downloading various registration forms.”

DRIVER’S TESTING

To write your Class 7 learner’s licence you must be at least 14 years old and, if under the age of 18, must be accompanied by your parent.

If you are 16 years of age or older, and have held a valid Class 7 licence for one year, you can take a road test.

With a Basic Road Test you are in the GDL (Graduated Driver’s Licence) Program. And, once you have been in that program for two years you can take an advanced road test.

Openings are available for road tests, usually with two week’s notice. Road tests and knowledge tests are also available for all other classes of licences.”

The Learner’s Handbook is no longer available, but you can find them on the Alberta Transportation website: (www.transportation.alberta.ca/531.htm) Flashcards are also available as a study tool through the Camrose Registry office.

Camrose Registry ia able to search the Alberta and acrossCanada personal property database for liens and registered encumbrances on a variety of items, including vehicles.

“When you are buying a vehicle you should check to see if there are liens against it,” said Karen. “You don’t want to find that you have become liable for an unpaid debt on the car that you are buying.”

RAFFLES

“We can help with licences that are required if you are a sports group or charity wanting to conduct a 50/50 draw or raffle where the prize is valued at less than $10,000.”

VITAL STATISTICS

“Camrose Registry can order your marriage, birth and death certificate if the event occurred in Alberta. We can

LAND SEARCHES

“We also do land title searches. They help you to determine if there are mortgages or caveats on it,” said Karen. “We can’t make changes, but we can do the searches for you.”

ALBERTA HEALTH CARE

You can submit your application for Alberta Health Care at our office if you’re new to the province, if you’ve had a name change or an address change.

ORGAN DONOR REGISTRY

When you renew your driver’s licence you now will be asked if you would like to donate your organs for transplants, scientific research or medical education. With your consent, the word ‘Donor’ and a heart symbol will appear on your licence. Your request will also be entered into the Alberta Organ and Tissue Donor Registry.

CORPORATE REGISTRIES

Camrose Registry can help you incorporate your business, as well as file annual corporate registry returns. A reminder form is sent out annually by Corporate Registries prior to the anniversary of the company’s incorporation.

Sean Willms had a great vision when he decided to add a brewery to his hotel. He visited dozens of breweries and brew pubs to see how they operated. Then he wanted to learn from the best craftsmen in the world in Germany, where he completed an intense training program.

Even with all that research and training, he didn’t envision his new brewery would be so popular that it needed to expand about every other year.

“We needed to keep up with demand,” said Sean. “We have increased our production by 35 per cent this year over last year at the Norsemen Brewing Co.” A big part of the reason the brewery is expanding on a regular basis is because Sean has seen his distribution grow through several outlets outside of the hotel.

“We asked ourselves, why should people just get Sean Willms inside his brewery to enjoy our fresh craft-brewed beer here in the hotel?

They should be able to take it home or drink it at a hockey game or enjoy it at local restaurants. We are growing our keg sales quite quickly outside of Camrose. I would like to see more local establishments carry our craft beer. There are so many opportunities here that local businesses are just not picking up on.”

Now Norsemen Brewing Co. beer is available at Camrose Golf Course, Clubhouse Virtual Golf, East Side Mario’s, Hart House, Whistle Stop Golf Course, Alice Hotel, 49th Street Liquor Store in Daysland and throughout the Norsemen Inn. “Thanks to Kevin at the Alice Hotel, we just added Eric the Red on tap. I hope more local businesses follow suit by serving our products. Soon we will be adding Longship Blonde Ale at Boston Pizza.”

Longship Blonde Ale, Eric the Red, Epic Stout and Thor’s Hammer IPA are always on tap at the Norsemen Inn. “Now we have two speciality beers also on tap to give customers six choices everyday. A year and a half ago we had two choices, now we have six.

What the expansion has done is allowed us to have more speciality beers to give customers a nice variety. When people come to the bar or lounge, they can count on having something different to try,” Sean said.

Every October, a special German-style Oktoberfest beer is brewed to celebrate the harvest season.

“We have delivered kegs to tourism events, to The Bailey Theatre and the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre for fundraising events.”

“Serving our beer at the Kodiak games is huge for us,” he said. “They asked us to come up with a light beer, in addition to our Longship Blonde, so we developed Kodiak Country Light. It has been a big hit, really tremendous.

We also have our beer served at Augustana Vikings hockey games.”

Distribution outside of the hotel started with small steps – a keg to a wedding party, one to a barbecue, small fundraisers.

Norsemen Brewing Co. beer can be found in a St. Albert liquor store that has a growler filling station and it’s being served at Roosters Roadhouse in Red Deer. “We would like to see our fresh beer available in as many locations as possible.”

If you want to take some of this delicious beer home, simply head for the Norsemen Inn where they will fill a 1.89 litre growler (64 ounces) up for you. When it’s finished, just bring it back and get a full fresh one for only $10. It’s one of the ways the craft brewing industry is making fresh beer available to enjoy at home.

“The growler business has exploded. It has always been good for us, but because we have more speciality beers, they are always wanting to try something new.”

The entire craft-brewing industry is in a strong growth mode as beer lovers have a thirst for discovering beers they haven’t tried before. “Travellers are coming to our hotel and are asking if there are any local breweries,” said Sean. “We love it when they ask us that question.”

This is an important time of year – a time to give thanks and to reflect upon the importance of small business as we recognize and celebrate Small Business Week in Alberta.

Small business has a number of different definitions depending on who you talk to, but one thing is crystal clear about small business: it’s important to everyone.

When we think of small business, those on our staff define it as being involved in our community at the local level. As individuals and as a group, we take a great deal of pride in being part of Camrose, living and working here, some of us raising families, all of us having neighbors.

We don’t think of ourselves as being “big” business. We do think of ourselves as being an integral part of the fabric of our community.

Perhaps the biggest reason we see ourselves as a “small” business is because the owner of the Canadian Tire in Camrose works here, walks out on the floor of the store to visit with customers, goes to hockey games, gets involved in local organizations, contributes to worthwhile community causes and enjoys being involved the community.

Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum! as more and more discover this treasure trove and the sensual delights of deeply satisfying rum.

“The great thing about rum,” says Daniel, “is that there are so many different tastes.” Mocha, vanilla, tobacco, molasses, cocoa, cinnamon, toffee, banana, nutmeg, oak, caramel, cloves; one or a combination of them have been used to describe the underlying hints of flavor you will taste.

There is no other drink that has such a notorious history as rum. It was the drink of pirates and sailors, seafaring men who fought for their captain or their country.

They battled for gold and for honour and there was most likely a beautiful ravenhaired woman involved somewhere in the story. Rations of rum were given to soldiers on the front lines. Songs were written about it. Its history is steeped in glory and in tragedy. In Camrose that wonderful, crazy history is found in a little place called Country Garden Liquor Store, whose shopkeeper, Daniel van Kesteren, knows more about rum than just about anyone in east central Alberta.

More than 260 rums from around the world line the southwest corner of the store. They come from exotic-sounding countries such as Barbados, Venezuela, Jamaica, Trinidad, Guadeloupe, Panama, St. Lucia, Mauritius, Antigua, Guyana, Grenada and many more. They come in colors ranging from clear to golden to amber to black, as black as octopus ink. The labels themselves are works of art. Ships, skulls, captains, swords, harbours, monks, maps, mermaids, coins … all representing a time and place both fearsome and romantic.

Daniel started growing this collection of rums about 10 years ago when a friend of his asked him to bring in a few bottles of Zaya rum. Word slowly spread among rum aficionados that Daniel was willing to bring in special requests for rum. Although he hadn’t been a rum expert, he became one over time, able to discern between the special and the merely mediocre. His rum collection grew to where it is now, over 260 different kinds of rum, and the investment is paying dividends

Rum is most often finished in oak barrels that previously contained cognac, or scotch or sherry. They remain undisturbed in those barrels up to 25 or 30 years before being bottled and shipped around the world – to the amazement of rum drinkers across the globe!

Business and Development

The City of Camrose is committed to strengthening the local economy, providing quality of life and building on existing assets. “Growth, confidence, development, and construction!” are key words for 2018, according to City of Camrose director of Community Development and Innovation Victor Goodman.

One of the few Alberta communities not reliant on oil and gas, Camrose’s diversified economy grew steadily even during the downturn. Camrose has a skilled, welleducated workforce and development friendly policies.

More growth is on the horizon.

In 2018 Camrose will see continued construction with plans in place for several industrial and retail developments. Residential construction activity will also progress with the development of the Town Square project, Ironwood Estates and continued activity in Valleyview West.

City administration and council work diligently to accommodate the wants and needs of developers to ensure continuous and steady growth of the city, while also providing leading edge customer service, a trait not usually feasible for larger cities.”We may not always be able to accommodate the exact needs of developers, but we make a deliberate effort to work with them,” stated City of Camrose manager Malcolm Boyd.

“When developers come to Camrose, they work with a team at the City on creating options.”

Camrose is sophisticated enough to have solid processes in place, yet small enough to be dynamic and nimble. Developers seeking a place to set up shop, quite simply, won’t be put through the daunting practice of jumping through a lot of hoops.

Malcolm explained that the City recognizes the importance of small businesses. “They are the heart and soul of economic development. You often see more economic development success when growing small businesses that are each hiring a handful employees, than chasing one big employer.”

The City sees great value in promoting Camrose to markets beyond its close perimeter, such as Calgary and other regions.

“We know potential investors and entrepreneurs are looking at Camrose as a place to open a business or a satellite of their existing business. The City wants to attract new businesses and grow its existing business base. We are actively promoting the message that whether your business is retail, commercial, or industrial, Camrose is exactly where you need to be.” said Victor.

DOWNTOWN UNIQUENESS Planning for future economic growth is a complex process. The needs and wants of Camrose citizens and developers are constantly changing and the City often needs to look 10, 20, to 50 years out to anticipate and plan for those changes. The 48 Avenue Bridge Replacement project is a good example of 50 year planning. Another example is development in the downtown area.

“The City continues to focus on the development of a vibrant downtown area,” said Malcolm. “The success of our downtown can attract even more businesses to the area.”

Updating the Downtown Action Redevelopment Plan is part of a strategy to draw small businesses to the area and encourage residential growth where people can live close to their daily destinations (a trend that is becoming more popular).

“Over that last 10 years the downtown residential population has more than doubled. If people live there

they shop there and if enough people shop there, more stores will come,” said Malcolm.

One of the goals is to focus on vacant and underutilized properties in the downtown area. The City is creating ways to encourage more downtown growth, including the possibility of offering incentives for downtown development.

With downtown’s already far reaching reputation for friendly, diverse and unique shopping experiences, adding local events that draw people in, such as Jaywalkers and the Downtown Market, will promote growth.
