Community collection of all boxes filled will take place from November 13 to 19 at Century Meadows Baptist Church. Operation Christmas Child boxes that are filled and donated will be distributed by Samaritan’s Purse, the recognized Christian relief and development organization. Regular, average-sized boxes with lids or official shoeboxes, available at the Church, should be packed for one of these age groups: 2 to 4, 5 to 9 or 10 to 14. Ideal gifts include items such as a doll, soccer ball with pump, stuffed animal or other fun toys. Hygiene items and school supplies are always greatly appreciated by recipients. A personal note, even a photo, will be treasured by the child who will receive your gift. Two final points: a prayer for the child who will receive the Christmas present you send is highly recommended. A donation of $10 for each shoebox you send will help cover shipping of your gift to a far-away destination.

Connie Prost, widow of the late Jim Prost, presents Cody Bell with the first installment of his $2,000 flight training scholarship. Also shown are Cody’s instructor, Kirk Ryan, Glenn Lyseng, secretary-treasurer and Barry Graham, president of the Camrose Flying Club and COPA Flight 137.

On a recent beautiful fall evening, members of the Camrose Flying Club/ COPA Flight 137 congregated at the Camrose Airport to present Cody Bell with the first installment of his $2,000 flight training scholarship. Portions of the total amount are released upon reaching certain milestones in his flight training. The scholarship was created to provide assistance to worthy young individuals towards the cost of flight training leading to pilot certification and to promote interest in general aviation locally. It also honours the memory of Jim Prost and his love of flying. Jim was an avid aviator, and an enthusiastic member of the flying club. He travelled far and wide in his little Cessna 120, visiting destinations as far away as Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Yellowknife and Uranium City.

He passed away prematurely and his smiling face and helpful hands have been very much missed by his friends around the airport ever since. The scholarship is funded by an endowment with the Battle River Community Foundation, which was launched with earnings from the annual FlyIn Breakfast, hosting the local visits of the RCAF Snowbirds Air Demonstration team and other fund-raising endeavors. Earnings from the endowment were supplemented with memorial donations honouring Jim and other contributions received from time to time from generous donors. Cody Bell’s desire to become an airline pilot was established at a very young age and was reinforced by many trips to the Camrose airport as a little boy, where he and his dad just

sat and watched aircraft taking off and landing. He started on the path to be a pilot last November, when he began his Ground School. Flight training has followed. He soloed in a Cessna 172 on July 31st with 11.8 hours in his log book. Cody hopes to obtain his Private Pilot’s Licence before the end of the year or by spring at the latest. He plans to attend Mount Royal University following high school, for his Commercial Licence and multi-engine endorsement. He says that he is 100 per cent dedicated to do whatever it takes to achieve his goal to fly for a major airline, adding that he has a dream to fly and will stop at nothing to get there. After that, the sky is the limit! Cody is the son of Lorraine and Greg Bell of Camrose.

Thank You My campaign for Camrose City Council over the past month has included meeting many amazing residents of this community that I call home. A big thank you for all your love, support and encouragement. I have enjoyed this part of the journey but now it is time to get down to business. I look forward to this new adventure. – Cathie Johnson

Letters to the Editor The humanizing gift of good service

Since last week’s Reflections column, Rip-off Alert, about getting charged in US dollars when booking hotel reservations online from reservations.com, I’ve heard two more stories of people in East Central Alberta getting dinged the same way I was–being charged more than the price listed on the website, and in US dollars. Even cancelling cost money because there was a non-refundable service fee. One woman had booked five rooms for family members attending a wedding. When she realized it was US dollars she cancelled, but it still cost a lot for absolutely no value. ***

As more and more business is carried out through impersonal online shopping, or with corporations that act like we’re nuisances, it’s a treat to receive excellent service. One of my favourite superb customer service experiences happened on a cold icy poor-visibility winter morning during rush hour in Edmonton. I almost never have to drive in rush hour traffic in the city, but on this occasion it was unavoidable. So there I was, at one of the busiest intersections in the city, when–for the only time in its 11-year relationship with me–my car died. I was at the front of the line at a red light. The light turned green. I couldn’t move. Traffic began to snarl up behind me. I was able to phone for a tow truck and phone the people who were expecting me. And then I waited, keenly aware of being a roadblock.

Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Election process

I hope a large portion of eligible Camrosian voters took part in their civic duty in this municipal election. Sadly, it is the governmental level with the lowest voter turnout, yet the highest level a citizen can directly engage with their government. By the time this letter is printed, we will have found out who our new City council is composed of and who our new (or incumbent) mayor is. It certainly was an exciting election with three

mayoral candidates and a diversity of councilor candidates. Every time I vote, I am honoured to be part of the process to choose my government. And privileged to do so in a country where the democratic process is safe (I’m thinking of Kenya particularly) and largely free from corruption (remember the robocall scandal?). Last week in The Camrose Booster on page 27 was a full-page advertised endorsement of Norm Mayer. It is great to see so much citizen support for a candidate. I sense this is an element of the small-town vibe our city often can convey. However, I felt this advertisement was inappropriate during the municipal election campaign. As I understand, like at federal and provincial level, each candidate has a strict budget of how much money they are able to spend on their campaign, whether that be lawn signs or ads in

a paper and, of course, people can certainly donate to a candidate’s campaign. What this article essentially was, was a third party advertisement on behalf of Norm Mayer. It also was not fair to Norm Mayer to advertise on his behalf without his alleged knowledge during the municipal election campaign. This may have influenced people’s decision on Monday, with financial resources outside of Mr. Mayer’s campaign budget. Perhaps this ad was to the letter of the law, but I do not feel it was to the spirit of the law. The intent of this letter is not an accusation to any candidate, but to the general public about the fairness of elections campaigns and due process. Geordie Nelson, Camrose

***

On a busy winter morning at rush hour, it took a while for the tow truck to arrive. The tow truck driver asked a perfectly reasonable question: “Where would you like me to tow the car?” I realized I had no idea. I thought a minute and asked if he could take me to the nearest dealer that sold my kind of car and had a service department. By the time my car and I arrived at the place, I was more than a tad frazzled (something about being the object of many people’s irritation, while my car blocked rush hour traffic). ***

Keep in mind the people at the garage had never seen me before. I was not a regular customer and I arrived unexpectedly. I didn’t know if they’d be willing or able to help. The person at the service counter commented, “This hasn’t been a great morning for you.” I nodded. Then he said, with apologies, “Our service department is fully booked today. It will take about half an hour before someone is able to look at your car to see what the problem is. Would you like to sit over there,” he gestured to an attractive lounge area “and have a coffee?” I almost wept with gratitude. The lounge area had several kinds of beverages free of charge and a few snacks too. A TV with the sound turned off. Current magazines. It was living-room clean and tidy. An excellent place to unfrazzle. About 45 minutes later, I learned that the problem was with the water pump. I also learned that the garage had checked and the repair would be covered by the car’s warranty. It would take several hours before the service department could get to it. Would I like to wait there, or would I like to use a courtesy car so I could go somewhere else for a few hours? I felt totally pampered. Cared for, even. And I wasn’t even a regular customer–yet. (Yes, I did become one, but that’s another story.) ***

Sometimes I’m nostalgic for the olden days when you knew everyone with whom you did business, when we all kept each other on our best behaviour. I love it that I can still go into a local store and the staff knows the person for whom I’m buying a gift, knows that person’s preferences and that they’ll enjoy a particular item. In a time of increasing impersonality, genuine human contact is precious. ***

I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an email to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

Kodiaks Cub Club focuses on reading By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks hockey team launched a Kodiaks Cub Club to support free libraries. The Kodiaks have always been much more than just a junior hockey team. The sport, team and its players are a valuable resource and great asset to the city. The Kodiaks, proud members of the Cub Club, embrace the opportunity to give back to the community, especially when it benefits youth and encourages literacy, physical activity and positive choices. The players have enjoyed participating at local schools and this year they will be much more involved as the result of a new partnership. They are teaming with local businesses and sponsors to launch the Kodiaks Cub Club initiative. This program promotes reading and physical activity outside the regular school hours and leaves no child out. An inclusive adventure where the only measurement is time spent, brings together the impressionable young child and a positive role model in a controlled environment. “It is easy and it is fun to participate. Both the reading and physical activities are measured only in time spent. Reading with relatives, reading out loud,

reading a story book or a newspaper all count as minutes. Playing outside, taking part in organized sports, shoveling snow and family walks all count as minutes of physical activity. Children with limitations can accomplish their goals doing what they can do,” said associate coach Nigel Dube. Once a student reaches the goal of 12 hours of reading and 12 hours of activity outside of regular school hours they are rewarded with two tickets to a Kodiaks home game, a Kodiaks Cubs Club t-shirt, back pack, a kid’s meal from Wok Box, a free student pass to Crossfit Camrose, as well as an individualized certificate of completion. “We want to encourage students to do more than what is required for classroom activity. We want them to engage friends and family—mostly we do not want anyone to be left out,” said Nigel. “Camrose is a really great community to be part of, our players are welcomed from across the country and beyond and we want to give back. Local sponsors have come forward and stepped up to make this possible,” Nigel added. “We really look forward to working with school administrators to

find ways to encourage participation.” The launch of this program will not take away from what the players have participated in the past including school visits, participation in physical education, an annual book drive and current reading programs. The team is committed to growing their involvement and within the Camrose and surrounding community, this program is the next step. The Kodiaks are also proud to announce they will be adding six new Free Libraries in the community in a joint effort with the Rotary Club to allow people of all ages the opportunity to read. The new libraries will be added to the eight already around the community. Little Free Libraries are located around town and are filled with books for people to enjoy without having to pay. “The Rotary club has done a great job of having this available to the people of Camrose, the crew at Zetsen built six more for us to put out in the community. The Kodiak organization is proud to be a community first team,” added Nigel. The program will kick off with Grade 3 to 5 students at Sparling and Chester Ronning elementary schools.

He was named the ACAC golfer of the year. Braden Clarkson was also named to the AllCanadain team. He placed fourth overall individually in Alberta. He has shown tremendous improvement in his game during his three years at Augustana and has developed into a team leader. Clarkson assisted in the training and development at Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School’s golf academy in Camrose. The men’s team at nationals was led by coach Bill Penny. Golfers included Harrison, Clarkson, Craig Lynes, Darion Geddes and Carson Roche to Ontario. Nationals were held on Oct. 15 to 21 in Oshawa. Soccer

The University of Alberta Augustana Vikings women’s soccer team lost a tough 4-2 contest to Concordia on Oct. 14. Tara Berger collected both goals for the Vikings, while Demi Vermeer and Ellen Hvidsten added assists. Keeper Cassidy Newcombe was busy making 13 of 17 saves. The men’s squad was blanked 3-0 by Concordia. Keeper Joseph Wagner stopped everybody except Isaac Fota, who garnered a hat trick. Cross-country running

and go to work for you The return of seven incumbent councillors and myself, as your Mayor of Camrose, strongly suggests the “Stay the Course” pledge, on which most of us campaigned, was strongly endorsed. In the next four years we look forward to carrying on with many street and sidewalk improvements, remodelling and expanding our swimming pool, completing a new waste water treatment plant and paying down city debt even more. There will be considerable other important work in the current term. Thank you for your support and confidence in our collective abilities.

Camrose young resident Janaya Iverson recently walked away with the title of Canadian Young Model Miss (age category 10 to 12 years old) during a Canadian Model MissScholarship Competition held in Leduc Sept. 1 to 3. The crowning moment was meeting and being crowned by Miss Universe Canada Siera Bearchell. “About two years ago I started participating in pageants,” said Janaya. As a result of years of dancing and being on stage Janaya wanted to explore other avenues which included competing in pageants. “I did a couple small pageants then my coach

2017-10-03 8:49 AM

told me about this pageant (Sept. 1 to 3) and she suggested I enter it.” Competitors were judged on a variety of areas including, on stage speeches (public speaking), modeling different outfit changes (poise), and talent. “You are not just judged on your modeling,” noted Janaya. “I also had to send in report cards and there were on stage questions and interviews.” Janaya mentioned that these pageants (competitions) are not at all like some of those portrayed on television and encourage a more natural look. “I do more natural pageants without the spray tanning, false teeth and

false hair. The pageants take a lot of practicing,” she said of not only stage presence but speeches as well, which she writes herself. The competition also affords contestants a platform to speak publicly on a topic that they are passionate about. “My platform is muscular dystrophy,” said Janaya. “I have a sister who has muscular dystrophy.” Having an opportunity to spread her message to a larger audience is important and one of the reasons Janaya hopes to continue competing in pageants, with a goal of winning the titles Miss Teenage Canada and Miss Universe Canada. “It was really important when I met Miss Universe Canada, because she is a role model for me and she can take her platform to the next level, she can get more people involved in her cause.” Janaya added that some of the other benefits of competing in pageants is being able to meet and make friends from all over Canada. “I have friends in Moose Jaw, Vancouver, Newfoundland. All of these people from around Canada get to go to these pageants and we meet and bond.” And they stay in touch said Janaya, some on a daily basis. In conclusion, Janaya commented about what competing in these pageants means to her. “I want to turn my can’t’s into my cans and I want to turn my dream of becoming like my role model and making this cause into my plan and making it happen.”

Steele history shared by Rotary club By Murray Green

You can re-live the life and times of Sam Steele by attending the Rotary Club of Camrose speaker series on Monday, Oct. 30 beginning at 11:45 a.m. at the Norsemen Inn. Learn about distinguished Canadian soldier and police official Sam Steele. He was an officer of the North-West Mounted Police, most famously as head of the Yukon detachment during the Klondike Gold Rush and commanding officer of Strathcona’s Horse during the Boer War. Dr. Rod MacLeod will present insights into Major General Sir Samuel Benfield Steele’s life and legacy. In 1873, Steele was the third officer sworn into the newly formed North-West Mounted Police (NWMP), entering as a staff constable. In 1877, he was assigned to meet with Sitting Bull, who, having defeated Lieutenant-Colonel George

Custer at the Little Bighorn, had moved with his people into Canada to escape American vengeance. Steele along with U.S. Army General Alfred Howe Terry attempted unsuccessfully to persuade Sitting Bull to return to the United States. Steele and his force made the Klondike Gold Rush one of the most orderly of its kind in history and made the NWMP famous around the world, which ensured its survival at a critical time when the force’s dissolution was being debated in parliament. Always a soldier, in 1900 Steele leapt at the offer of Canadian Pacific Railway tycoon Donald Smith, Baron Strathcona to be the first commanding officer of Smith’s privately raised cavalry unit, Strathcona’s Horse. This Canadian light cavalry unit, in British Imperial service, was sent to South Africa during the Second Boer War, where Steele

commanded them with distinction in the role of reconnaissance scouts. Steele requested active military duty upon the outbreak of the First World War. He was initially rejected for command on the grounds of age. However, a compromise was reached which allowed him to act as commander of the 2nd Canadian Division until the unit was sent to France, whereupon he would be replaced. Steele died during the 1918 flu pandemic just after his 71st birthday. Register the Friday before each event by calling 780-679-4657 (leave a message), or email RotaryCamrose@gmail.com. The next event is on Monday, Nov. 6 at 11:45 a.m. with Dr. Chester Ronning, educator, Canadian diplomat and politician, presented by David Goa at Camrose Resort Casino.

Keep the flu at bay by getting vaccinated By Lori Larsen

Sniffles and sneezes, coughs and sore throats, the flu season is once again upon us and Alberta Health Services (AHS) wants to make sure Albertans are prepared by offering free of charge influenza immunization to residents six months of age and older. The vaccine will be available at a number of AHS public clinics across Alberta as well as many pharmacists and physician offices around the province.

“We have seen cases and outbreaks of influenza already,” said Dr. Digby Horne, medical officer of Health Central Zone. “You may be healthy now but, without immunization, everyone is at risk. Prevention is your only protection.” Strains of inf luenza can change from season to season, as a result, AHS advises that people should not rely on immunizations received in the past. “Last season, influenza immu-

nization cut Albertans’ risk for influenza by just more than 40 per cent. That’s great, but last year’s immunization won’t protect you this season. You need this season’s immunization to be protected this season.” The consequences of influenza can be very serious. Last season, over a six-month period, more than 1,600 Albertans were hospitalized and 64 Albertans passed away from influenza.

“Influenza does not discriminate,” said Dr. Horne. “Though some Albertans are at greater risk of severe complications, no one is naturally immune to influenza. Don’t take the risk. Influenza can be one less thing we battle this winter. For yourself, and your loved ones, get immunized.” For more information, including local clinic schedules, visit www.ahs.ca/influenza or call Health Link at 811.

Koyczan delivers messages By Murray Green

Shane Koyczan dared to be a poet when most gave up when they looked at their pay cheques. Instead of singing his messages, he spoke out about bullying, which eventually led to a career path most declined to take. The entire world was introduced to his talents during the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Shane garnered the wow factor across Canada and internationally as he became the poet of our generation. He will be bringing his powerful message to the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre stage on Friday, Oct. 27 beginning at 8 p.m. Shane’s strong antibullying stance and his To This Day project video went viral in early 2013 with over 14 million views and counting. His direction is engaging and authentic in attitude. But unlike the musicians that he’s often compared to, poets rarely infiltrate pop culture. Koyzcan emerges in a new wave of 21st century poetry that dares to belong to the people and speak directly to them in their own voice. “This video moved people to start noticing what I was doing. I have been writing for a long time and speaking at poetry open mikes. I decided to quit my job and give it a year to see if I could do this as a career. I lived a pretty lean existence at times as a working artist in Vancouver,” he shared with The Camrose Booster. “It was more challenging because the word ‘poetry’ is a loaded word for most people. Everyone has their own experience with poetry. In most cases, it was read in a book at school and most of the words were things that

they couldn’t relate to. They have preconceived notions. People don’t understand how funny it can be. I try to touch on all of the emotions, including humour.” After the anti-bullying video, things started to snowball for Shane. “I have made it a career and how it inspires others in arts in general. It is tricky to navigate, even in school. If you tell someone you want to be in arts, you can see it in their eyes, the fear of not having a clear path,” he explained. “If you say you want to be a doctor, lawyer or any other kind of job, there is a path to follow to take the courses and credits you need. If you want to be a working artist, you have to clear your own path.” He found his path by accident. “I was in a drama class in school, but I wasn’t supposed to be in that class. I registered for a drafting class, but the class was too full,” recalled Shane. “They took some students, I’m not sure if it was by alphabet or not, but just moved them to the next class in line, which was drama. Without consulting me, I was moved to drama. I immediately thought it was the end of the world. Instead, it was a blessing. The teacher at the time unloaded a lot of work on me and gave me huge roles. It was a huge trust on me that I could do it. I think it opened up socially as well because I wasn’t very popular in school. I was an outcast for a lot of my school years. However, I had success at drama and suddenly I became more popular because I was funny.” Shane is not only a writer and spoken word virtuoso, but also a multi medium spoken word artist. His first published collection, Visiting Hours, was the

only work of poetry selected by both The Guardian and The Globe and Mail for their Best Books of the Year lists in 2005. It is now in its third edition, and includes We Are More. The book remains in heavy demand and was the motivation for releasing Shane’s entire written catalogue in eBook formats. He followed up on the success with Stickboy, a novel in verse that chronicles the dark and lonely journey of a bullied child gripped by helpless rage. Shane shines a light into the bleak world behind some of the most incomprehensible acts in our culture, and also shows the healing power of love. Written for anyone who has ever been a child, Stickboy continues to be hailed by teachers, academics and mental health experts alike for its deft handling of the subject of bullying. “When you talk about your own experiences in front of people, it is emotionally quite taxing. I’m going to spend part of the year working on material that doesn’t involve my own life experiences.” Shane returned to his roots with a collection of poetry titled, Our Deathbeds will be Thirsty, which was released in 2012. This book features the piece, To This Day, a poem about bullying that was made into a video by collaborating animators. That video, released in 2013, quickly received worldwide recognition by going viral on Youtube, receiving over a million views in a matter of days. It was released as a project to acknowledge and support national Anti-Bullying day. Since the video’s release, Shane has presented at TED Talks where the audience leapt to their feet in applause. Words To is his first graphic novel. He covers many beautiful and thought-provoking pieces relevant to our time. “Troll” is a poem about cyber-bullying and the challenges of managing and understanding this new breed of abuse by critically examining the deep and hurtful wounds of participating in this digital generation. “My show is always changing and I am really happy with the material that I have been working on for this tour. It is similar to the shows I did in Scotland last year and it was my favourite to perform.” Silence Is A Song graphic novel is accompanied by a collection of songs of the poems featured in the novel. The assembly of songs creates a dimension to Shane’s message that is carried through into the amazing visual art in the graphic novel and further into the video collection that will

accompany this incredible body of work. Shane takes us from the page and further displays his talents as a multi medium spoken word artist. Shane is best known for his award-winning spoken word performances. With his rhythmic verse in high gear, he navigates his audience through social and political territory with a furious honesty and a tender humanity that has brought audiences to their feet. “I’m always excited when I get to a different place to perform and meet new people. I live in Penticton and grew up in Yellowknife, so I like smaller communities and appreciate going to places that maybe don’t get the exposure to different arts.” Shane is an extraordinary talent that has blown the dust off of the traditional designation of poet.

The automotive section of

Weiss modernized a classy station wagon By Murray Green

The 1955 Chevrolet was considered a huge turning point for the manufacturer and a major success. Although most collectors today love the power generated by the car with classic designs in the 55 to 57 years, the rare models tend to be the forgotten station wagons. Daymion Weiss of Daysland couldn’t resist turning a beat up 1955 Chevrolet 210 four door station wagon into a thing of beauty. He performed a frame off restoration and even brought back the two tone trim. “Every nut and bolt was gone through and all stainless hardware was replaced. It is a stock chassis with a disc brake upgrade,” Daymion explained. “I added power steering, put in a 1967, 327 motor with a 700R4 transmission, and all of the exterior panels are GM that I spent considerable time filing and straightening out before I did the body work.” The Chevrolet TwoTen, or 210 was the midrange model of the Chevrolet car from 1953 to 1957. It took its name by shortening the production series number (2100) by one digit in order to capitalize on the 1950s trend toward numerical auto names. The numerical designation 210 was also sporadically used in company literature. It replaced the Styleline DeLuxe model available in previous years. The TwoTen was discontinued after the 1957 model year to be replaced by the Biscayne. He started the restoration about eight years ago. “Number one, I love station wagons. Secondly, I think Chevrolet got in right with the ‘55 Chevy. It is a perfect, beautiful car. The ‘55 to ‘57 cars are classics, but I like the ‘55s.” Normally, car enthusiasts grab the two-doors to restore. “The four-doors and stations wagons are the first to get crushed. Everybody wants the twodoor hardtops or convertibles. Out of the 210,000 cars produced, I can’t guess, but there are not

very many station wagons left,” he shared. The ‘55 model year marks the introduction of a new chassis and the debut of the Chevrolet’s legendary small block V8. The 210 buyer was free to choose any powertrain option available. The ammeter and oil pressure gauges were changed to warning lights. He enjoys talking about his wagon and the process of restoring it with other at car shows. “When people ask questions, especially young people, I like to share information. If this hobby is going to survive you have to keep people interested in it. I don’t want to be the guy that says get away from my car. If a little guy wanted to sit in it, I would be more than happy to open the door,” said Daymion. “This car cost me $2,500 before restoration and now it is appraised at a lot more. It was a lot

of work and it does have value. However, it takes the same amount of work to restore most vehicles. If I had restored a Nomad station wagon, it would be worth more. I like the restomods and what that is the restoration with modern additions for comfort. You want some nice upgrades if you are going to drive it. I’m not sure I would get the retail value out of it, but it isn’t for sale anyway.” Today, the Bel Air series of Chevrolets from 1953 to 1957 are far and away the most desirable models for collectors. However, 210 models do have appeal and do sport a fair amount of chrome trim and deluxe interior appointments, making them attractive and comfortable. Daymion has a special plaque on the wall at his Greasy D’s Rod and Kustom business in Daysland. “A friend of mine drew a picture of the car

and it hangs with a special part. Inside the car, when I pulled it a part, came a pencil rolling out of the dash. It was from a plumbing shop in Sas-

katoon. I have a bottle opener from Hamm’s Beer (out of St. Paul and now part of the Miller Brewing Company). Continued on page 23

GOLF CHAMPION

Submitted The Camrose Ladies Club Championship was held on Aug. 26 and 27 with 17 ladies participating. Mary Shields, left, won the senior club championship trophy with a 180 total, and Cheryl Van Dornick, right, won the ladies club championship trophy with a 155 total.

Embracing my quirks

I heaved the boxes down and began sorting through the Halloween decorations bought the day after the big event last year for bargain prices. Skeletons, huge hairy spiders, a tombstone set, a pumpkin that inflates and skulls to line our sidewalk. I couldn’t contain my glee. Finally, time to set up shop for one of the most fun days of the year! I daydreamed of creating a haunted house inside, like on the TV show Home Improvement where they hosted over-the-top Halloween parties each year. You know, someone poking their hand through a concealed hole in the table into a bowl of squishy stuff that party goers put their hands into and discover a real hand, that kind of thing. I started spreading the cobwebs on my stucco walls (my mom says don’t worry about the real cobweb already stretching to your ceiling, it will fit right in! There we go, it’s Halloween decorating, not poor housekeeping!). Then I looked around and realized that my children had scattered to their rooms for other more exciting modes of entertainment. But this was supposed to be for the children! How strange. Then the next day I used fresh dirt at the end of our driveway to create a mini cemetery. I patted the dirt into four nice mounds in front of their tombstones, adding in spiders, cobwebs and skeleton hands poking out. Then I looked around and realized that I was once again alone. But this was supposed to be for the children! How strange. Then I had an “oooh” moment. I was doing this for me. Because I am just a big kid at heart. And I realized that I am just fine with that. I am long past the teenage years of trying to blend in and I am onto the stage where I want to embrace my oddities. How boring to be like everyone else. These days I would be more likely to form an accordion club than to hide that I play the accordion (which I don’t, but if I did, it would be awesome to have a club.) A friend of mine has told me that she just doesn’t get the skinny jeans and legging trend and will not be taking part in it. That’s awesome, then rock your notso-skinny jeans! I will still be your friend. I just came upon the definition for “flawsome”-an individual who embraces their flaws and knows they’re awesome regardless. Halloween is showing me that there is no point in hiding who I really am. I will happily eat rocket candies until I have a stomach ache; that will likely never change. I have an aversion to coffee and have never drank more than a sip here and there in my life, and that will likely never change, much to my husband’s chagrin. The smell of olives has made me nauseous since my third pregnancy. I like to verbally double check that we have everything as we are leaving the house and sometimes triple check (my husband claims that this is what our children were doing during labour and that is why they took so long to be delivered: yup, a nose, yup, 10 fingers, yup 10 toes). I am a voracious reader, but I like to jump ahead to three quarters of the way through and read a few pages, just to get a feel for where things are headed. And beside my driveway there will be a mini cemetery this year if that’s what I want, because that is the kind of thing that I think is just plain fun. It is just me being me. There is no use trying to fit in, or trying to be normal; I have accepted that I am the mom telling her child to “breathe through your mouth” as we walk past the olives. That is just me accepting my quirks.

Kodiaks on wrong end of close games By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks are working hard to make up the difference in close games in October. They have been on the wrong end of some close contests. “We started off the season well, but we have been complacent lately. We stopped doing what worked and we are a different team than we thought we were. That explains how the last four games have gone,” said Kodiaks captain Ryan Hartman. “We need to work harder, play smarter to turn those games into wins.” He was referring to a recent 5-3 loss to the Drumheller Dragons and a 2-1 loss to the Calgary Mustangs. “We are not a bunch of skill guys like we thought we were. It’s a transition. In midget you might be the top scorer on your team, but when you move up to junior you have to be the team guy and play your role. When everyone thinks they are a skill player and thinks they are a goal scorer, players think they deserve this and that,” said Hartman. “That is when we stop playing the way we should be. We have guys that get the pucks to the shooters and players preventing goals.” That adjustment takes longer for some players than others. “I remember as a rookie, I didn’t expect to be the top player on the team. I knew when I came here two years ago that I wasn’t going to be the goal scorer and I was getting

a different role. It worked out for me. Each year I was able to show more of what I could do, like I did in midget. It takes a lot of patience to make the transition from midget to junior.” * When Hartman was named captain, he knew that he would have to help the coaches with leadership. “Guys have to be accountable when they come off the ice. January 16, 1956 ~ September 27, 2017 Lori was born in Camrose and lived in town until 1962, when the family purchased a farm in the Hay Lakes district. There she grew up, attending grade one through high school. She finished her formal schooling at Camrose Lutheran College then, immediately after, went to work in Edmonton. When something seemed to be blossoming with a young man named Ken Ozment, Lori found employment in property management and moved back to Camrose. They were wed on April 7, 1979 – the best day ever for them and after that was July 4, 1989, when Sean Kenneth Ozment arrived. From that day on, Lori became a devoted stay-at-home mom until he was grown. She then went back to work with Ken at the family business of Schnell & Barrie. Lori managed the books for several years until the business was sold. Lori also filled some of her time with volunteer work and served on the church council for several years at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hay Lakes. Gifted in design and decorating, she loved to be given a project, whether for herself, family or friends. She was a “behind-thescenes” leader in that she didn’t want to attract attention, but she knew how to take charge and get things done. After retirement, she enjoyed travelling across Canada and the world with Ken, Sean and friends or family. It was after their last trip in early March that Lori was diagnosed with cancer and, at the same time, struggling with a disabling case of sciatica. As the sciatica began to ease, the cancer took over. We will forever miss and remember our love, our partner, our confidante and friend. We will miss all that she had to offer us. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Ken; son Sean; parents Gord and Lue Lindseth; brother Jay; brother-in-law Greg Ozment; sister-in-law Kathy Ozment; and many special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her sister Tracy Moe. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2017 from CityLights Church. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Ken, Lori and Sean Ozment Fund at the Battle River Community Foundation. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Joseph ( Joe) Stanley Paul Swerda Joseph (Joe) Stanley Paul Swerda passed away peacefully with Ann Marie at his side, on October 6, 2017, in Thunder Bay Hospital. Joe was born on August 22, 1939, in Mundare, Alberta, to Mary (nee Homeniuk) and Stanley Swerda. Joe had a deep faith and was a member of the Anglican Church. He grew up near Round Hill, Alberta, with his seven siblings, thriving in the beautiful countryside, learning the hard work of farming at an early age, and forming friendships that lasted throughout his life. He often talked about his Mom’s wonderful meals made from their farm garden produce and of his Dad bringing him and his siblings chocolates when he returned home from a week’s work in the coal mines. He humorously recounted how he and his twin brother decided to help their Dad by greasing the entire wagon, not just the wheels! He loved his family, his neighbourhood, his community of Atikokan and spending time at home and in his garden. He was a millwright by trade, a member of C.A.R.P. and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #145 - Atikokan. He took daily walks in Bunnell Park to Little Falls, coming home with a smile because he had met an old friend or made a new one that day. He especially enjoyed spending a day exploring the area’s bush roads with a friend of more than 50 years, having coffee with friends and playing bocce ball at the Pioneer Club. His face lit up when friends delivered gourmet jams and meals to his door. He always said that Atikokan was ‘God’s country’. He will be deeply missed by Ann Marie; his sons Darren and Darwin; his grandchildren Ayla (Kaidance, Mercedes, Keira and Tyrell), Joshua (Erin - Emma and Jade), Alexandra, Hayley, Scott and Avanna; and his special ‘daughter’, Leona. His sister Anne, brother Ray and sister-in-law Kathy, twin brother Ted and sisterin-law Martha, all of Alberta, will miss him dearly, as will many nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and Ann Marie’s family who loved him as a brother and an uncle. He was predeceased by Frankie, his first love and the mother of his sons; his parents, Mary and Stanley Swerda; his brothers, Louis and Walter; his sisters, Tonie and Margaret and his niece, Debbie. May his soul rest in peace. A Celebration of Life service will be announced. Inurnment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Thunder Bay. If you desire, memorial donations would be welcome to a charity of your choice. We would like to include a special thank you to friends, John Hamrak and Cathy and Ray Laquerre, who helped Joe in his ‘hour of need’; and to the air ambulance and hospital staff who cared for Joe, enabling him to see his family before he passed.

By Lori Larsen The good feeling one gets from fundraising and helping others was something Our Lady Mount Pleasant Grade 12 student, Ce’Nedra KrezanoskiCooney discovered at an early age. Whenever there was an opportunity to go door-todoor fundraising, Ce’Nedra was on board. “We always had those fundraisers in elementary school and my parents would get mad at me because I was out going door-to-door for things like the Heart and Stroke fund in -40° weather,” she said with a smile. Lending a helping hand for the betterment of others is something that runs deep in Ce’Nedra. Having struggled a bit as a student herself, she understands the need for other students to have someone close to their age who is willing to be there for them. “I went to Sparling school for elementary, then in Grades 7 and 8 I did volunteering with the elementary students at my old school. “I would help a couple of students out with art or math or wherever the teacher needed extra hands. I would go and hang out with the kindergarten students and help with their activities.” Along with her willingness to help students, Ce’Nedra feels a strong connection to working with other challenged students and, on numerous occasions, assisted a young grade 5/6 boy who suffers with Tourette syndrome. “I was actually able to engage with him and he understood. So I did manage to teach him a lot of his math and all of his art.” Ce’Nedra admits she may not necessarily be a good tutor because she often doesn’t understand some of the concepts but, for some reason inexplicable to her, she has no problem helping others. “I can understand it and break it down easier for other people then I can for myself.” And she has come to realize that by helping others, she truly is helping herself. In Grade 10 at Our Lady Mount Pleasant School, Ce’Nedra started getting involved in the Leadership Program. Being a somewhat shy person more comfortable backstage with her helping, Ce’Nedra wasn’t sure if the Leadership Program was the right fit for her. “At first, I just tagged along with friends then within the next few meetings, I actually enjoyed being there. “It is not about acting

like a leader, but being a leader,” she wisely added. Through the program, Ce’Nedra has been able to continue her fervor for volunteering and reaching out to others. “We plan dances and do fundraisers and we go to the Mustard Seed (Edmonton) to help with the homeless. First we will unpack clothing and sort through everything and go on a tour around Edmonton, then after the tour we end up sitting down and making food for the home-

attending the Canadian Student Leadership Conference (held in Ontario), Ce’Nedra is charged up with new and wonderful ideas on how she can help her school be a better community. This means, in her own words, a better community for Camrose, Canada and eventually the world. This year, members of the Leadership Program at OLMP, including Ce’Nedra, are working on a few new initiatives. “A bunch of our leadership students have

less people and engaging in games and conversation.” In the beginning, Ce’Nedra found the experience to be a bit intimidating, stepping out of her comfort zone by speaking to people she didn’t know. “But it really is a lot of fun being able to be oneon-one with them and actually getting to know their story and talking to them. I really enjoyed being able to help them and they were very thankful.” In order to be able to attend the day at the Mustard Seed, the students must raise $50, money that is donated to the Mustard Seed. True to her spirit for fundraising, Ce’Nedra managed to raise $800. “I ended up doing a bunch of barbecues and sold Mixing Spoon items. If people had just given me the money, I would feel like I didn’t work for it or earn it.” Thus far this year, Ce’Nedra raised funds by doing a barbecue, bottle drives and baby-sitting almost every day all summer. “All the money I made baby-sitting went toward my trip,” she said proudly. Having just returned from her second year

decided to sign up for the mentoring program to help the grades 5 and 6 with their classes and help them boost their confidence.” Ce’Nedra also spoke about the possibility of starting a gratuity wall at the school, where students can post notes of things they are thankful for or thanking someone for helping them. As a new fundraising effort, the leadership students created a cookbook. “We handed out recipe pages to all the students in the school and those who wanted to participate handed them back in.” The 130-page recipe book is available for sale at OLMP or by contacting Ce’Nedra at 611923@eics.ab.ca. Ce’Nedra’s gift for coming up with and working on fundraising initiatives and her wonderful attitude about what helping others can do will take her far in life. “People are not going to necessarily remember what you said, but how you made them feel.” Who do you know as a community Difference Maker? Super family home in Victoria Park

By Lori Larsen

Located in the quiet well-established subdivision of Victoria Park, this great bungalow is ready for your family to move in. With a beautifully landscaped front yard and a huge backyard that backs onto a berm, this home offers wonderful curb appeal and a lot of privacy. The living room features a large bay window creating a perfect alcove to curl up with a good book and soak in the sunshine. From the living room, you go into the open concept dining area and kitchen which features plenty of cabinets, a full-height pantry space and centre island for food prep or laying out snacks for guests. Just off the kitchen, a garden door takes you into an amazing sunroom where the entertaining can transition smoothly into an area framed with windows. The master suite has a walk-in closet and its own private three-piece ensuite. Another bedroom, a four-piece bathroom and handy laundry room complete main floor living. The basement is completely finished

and offers another good-sized bedroom, additional three-piece bathroom and a very large family room highlighting a stylish corner gas fireplace. There is plenty of storage in the basement as well to tuck away seasonal items or use for hobby or craft items. Outside the home is an oversized backyard which is protected by a large grassy berm. There is plenty of space to have a garden or house a children's play area. A 24’ x 24’ garage with hot and cold taps and gas line not only offers plenty of room to store your vehicles but opens up the possibility of a handyman shop. Vinyl windows and plenty of RV parking are two added attractions for this home. This wonderful bungalow, located at 5302-67 Street, is priced at $369,900. There will be an open house on Thursday, Oct. 26 from 3 until 5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 28 from 1 until 3 p.m. For a personal viewing, contact Matthew Mayer at: Central Agencies Inc. 4870-51 Street, Camrose 780-672-4495 or Cell 780-781-7088
