If you are grateful for the freedom you enjoy in this country, take the opportunity to show your appreciation and respect at 11:00 a.m. It is at this time that the tradition of a minimum two minutes of silence should be upheld. This brief, but important, time period commemorates the sacrifices of people in all armed conflicts. As Remembrance Day approaches, consider wearing an artificial poppy on your clothing. This is a way to symbolize the memory of those who fought for our precious liberty and prized freedom. Poppies are available at retail and service locations throughout the area and at Legion headquarters in Camrose at 6002-50 Avenue. Wreaths are also offered at the Legion office. Businesses are encouraged to buy and display a wreath this week. If desired, your wreath can be laid at the cenotaph on November 11. An official Remembrance Day service will take place at CRE.

Stolen vehicle located Nov. 4

Camrose Police received a call that a 2006 GMC Canyon was stolen from a residence in the west end of Camrose. The vehicle was located some time later abandoned not too far from where it was stolen from.

Staff at a downtown licensed premise called on two occasions to report that a male they had kicked out was refusing to leave the premise. The male was located and advised to leave and not return or he would be charged with trespassing.

Letters to the Editor It might not all be yours

At one point when I still had children at home, one of them flung out in a moment of anger, “It’s not my fault! I didn’t ask to be born” and glared at me like I was responsible. All I could think of to say was, “It seemed like a good idea at the time.” It was not the finest moment in our relationship! Ever since I became a parent, I’ve not been a big fan of blaming our woes on our parents. But recently I’ve been reading stuff about epigenetics and realize our parents–and we as parents–may have impacted children in ways we didn’t know. I’m going to divert briefly into snippets about epigenetics and then come back to what this might have to do with anything that matters to you. Brief concept

Genetics is the study of how our genes create specific characteristics in each of us–eye colour, height and so on. The term epigenetics was derived from the Greek word “epigenesis” which originally described the influence of genetic processes on development. Epigenetics is the study of mechanisms that switch genes on or off. It is involved in every aspect of life and affects every aspect of our lives as well as our future generations. We’ve known for a long time that, from both our parents, we inherit combinations of genes that determine our physical characteristics. In more recent years, scientists are discovering that genes can also determine emotional, mental and behavioural characteristics. For example, studies show that fear can be inherited. In one experiment, mice were subjected to odourfear conditioning. Offspring of those mice were fearful of the conditioned odour, but not to other odours–even when they were separated from their parents. Changes in some of the offspring’s genes were observed. As another example, human epidemiological studies show that prenatal and early postnatal environmental factors influence the adult risk of developing various chronic diseases and behavior disorders. As the child of children who grew up in the Great Depression of the 1930s and lived through the Second World War, I’ve noticed that many people in my generation have a “Depression and War” mentality even though we did not live through those experiences. Happily, scientists are also discovering that genetic tendencies can be influenced or reversed through lifestyle choices and factors in the environment. Bruce Lipton’s book The Biology of Belief was one of the first I read to float the concept that we are not slaves of our genetic heritage. Our beliefs can actually change our cells. More recently, researchers have reported that, for example, when mice who inherited fear or experienced trauma early in their lives then later lived in pleasant environmental conditions as they aged, their behavior returned to normal and their offspring developed normally.

In regards to Minister Eggen’s Thursday GSAenforcement announcement (which violates Alberta’s Bill of Rights), could you remind Minister Eggen, Premier Notley and all Albertans of the Alberta Bill of Rights “Recognition and declaration of rights and freedoms”? It states: 1. It is hereby recognized and declared that in Alberta there exists without discrimination by reason of race, national origin, colour, religion, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity or gender expression, the following human rights and fundamental freedoms, namely: a) the right of the individual to liberty, security of the person and enjoyment of prop-

erty and the right not to be deprived thereof except by the process of law; b) the right of the individual to equality before the law and the protection of the law. c) freedom of religion. This includes all Albertans. All religions. All races and all students (not just Eggen’s chosen LBGTQ minority). There should be no need for appointing (and paying) lawyers. The Alberta Bill of Rights is straight forward as to Albertans “rights and freedoms” and Minister Eggen should not be allowed to violate Albertan students’ (guaranteed) rights. It is time that all of our politicians be forced to uphold the Alberta Bill of Rights. Minister Eggen can not trample Albertans’ (legal) rights...our freedom of religion (be it Catholic, Islamic, Evangelical Christian, Orthodox Judaism or other) with his personal LGBTQ-driven agenda. Nor should Eggen be allowed to violate Albertans’ religious freedoms by withdrawing government grants and/or “revoking a school’s accreditation”... as is currently occurring for the Kingman Christian School (in the Battle River

School Division) and as he is threatening for Baptist and Catholic School Divisions. He cannot “pick and/ or choose” favorite minorities. He too must abide by the law. Since the 2016 AB Education Stakeholder Satisfaction Review (see attached excerpts) indicates that 90 to 99 per cent of the 800 students, 800 parents, 800 public persons, 800 teachers, 400 principals, 310 school boards and 60 superintendents surveyed, already “agree students are safe, treated fairly, and learning importance of caring and respect...”the eliminating of Eggen’s misguided and costly LGBTQ/GSA/separate bathroom campaign should be a no-brainer. Why is Eggens wasting millions of our tax dollars on his myopic mission, when those education tax dollars could be put to much better use in reuniting and educating all Alberta students, thereby improving all students’ overall well-being and academic achievement. Let’s get Alberta Education back on track...and Go for Gold in all aspects of education in Alberta. M. R. Leithead, Bawlf

Why this could matter to you

You may sometimes feel debilitated or even judgmental of yourself for sadness, anxiety, anger or other emotions that seem to continue longer or be more intense than seems reasonable. Three points. First, it may not all be yours! Maybe some of what you experience is what you’ve absorbed from the environment. It could even be part of your genetic make-up. Knowing that, you may find it easier to be more compassionate and accepting of yourself. Second, even if some of what’s affecting you has been absorbed from the environment or is part of your genetic heritage, you are not a prisoner of your environment or heritage. Different choices, kinder beliefs and happier healthier environments can change or reverse the impacts of environment and genetics. Third, like me, you have probably noticed that some of our most challenging experiences contain the seeds of our greatest gifts. Maybe our genetic heritage knows what it’s doing! ***

I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an email to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

Collision calamity By Lori Larsen

True to the nature of Alberta weather, winter happens quite literally in one day and with the wintery weather comes treacherous driving conditions. Police would like to remind motorists that it is their responsibility to drive according to the road conditions. “The first thing to consider is to slow down,” commented Camrose Police Service, traffic division, constable Adam Belanger. “Just because the speed limit is 50 km per hour doesn’t mean that it is always safe to travel at that speed. “One of the most common things we see is people do not adjust their stopping distance as they approach an intersection. When the roads are slippery, you need to start stopping well before the stop sign. Test the roads. As you approach the intersection while you are still well back, apply your brakes for a second or two. If your anti-lock brakes kick in, or you feel yourself sliding further than you are comfortable, then you have a good sense of what the road conditions are and how your vehicle will stop when you get to the intersection. “Don’t wait until you get to the stop sign to find out that you are sliding too far and will now slide through the intersection. Winter or snow tires are also a great investment for your safety on the Alberta winter roads.” In the event of a motor vehicle collision, Camrose Police Service and RCMP would like to remind motorists of a few tips on what to do. Motorists are advised that police will be required at the scene of a motor vehicle collision in the case of all of the following. If there is a serious injury or possible fatality, if drugs or alcohol are suspected or involved, if any vehicle is not drivable or if any of the drivers fail to produce registration or insurance. If your vehicle is driv-

able and none of the aforementioned applies, motorists are advised that police attendance at the scene is not required. However, police do advise motorists to keep safety in mind at all times after a collision occurs. If police are not being called to the scene, safely drive your vehicle out of the flow of traffic and to an area avoiding any further involvement of other vehicles. Once in a safe location, exchange information with the other driver including insurance, registration and drivers’ license. Use your cellular phone (if available) to photograph damage to all vehicles involved and the location of the collision (once again when safe to do so). “Any collision where the total damage is estimated at $2,000 between both vehicles, must be reported to the police by law,” noted Belanger. When making a report, you will need to provide the registration, insurance and driver’s license you exchanged with the other driver, any damage to all vehicles involved and the collision location. Reports can be made in person at Camrose Police Service at 6220-48 Avenue or, for County related collisions, Camrose RCMP detachment at 6410-48 Avenue. In the case of a hit and run when you are the victim, report it to the police immediately. If you have already moved your vehicle, you will need to attend the police detachment to fill out a report. If you witness the vehicle that hit your vehicle, make note of the make, model and license plate number of the offending vehicle, if and only when it is safe to do so. Partial license plate numbers may also be useful. To report a collision requiring police attendance, call 780-672-4444 (Camrose Police Service complaint line), RCMP 780-672-3341 or 911 in the event of a collision involving serious injury.

Downtown celebrates the season By Lori Larsen

As the air gets crisper, the stars seem to shine brighter and excitement starts to percolate for the upcoming holiday season. On Nov. 18 from 4 until 8 p.m., Downtown Camrose invites everyone to come and take part in a fun family event filled with festive activities and to celebrate the joy of the season. “To kick off the holiday season the first thing we (Downtown Camrose) are doing is on Nov. 18, we are having the Celebration of Lights,” commented Downtown Camrose manager Allan Walkey. The evening will begin with the lighting of the Christmas tree located on the north end of 50 Street in the parking lot just west of The Brick Camrose. At 5 p.m. Santa will be arriving in style on one of Camrose Fire Department’s big red shiny sleighs, fire truck every other day. Jolly St. Nick will be greeting everyone in the east end (annex) of the The Brick store and will be available for pictures for a donation to the food bank. Food donations are welcome even if you are not planning a photo with Santa. Residents are also encouraged to bring a pair of wearable mittens that can be hung on the tree and collected throughout the evening for later distribution to those in need in the community. Warm hands from warm hearts. “We are also encouraging various groups and individuals to come and share their traditions of the holiday season,” said Walkey. “Come in your traditional costumes or traditional dress share your stories and help celebrate the holiday.” This part of the evening will take place from 5 until 8 p.m. inside the The Brick Camrose (east end of the store), at 5000-51 Avenue. “This is new for us this year and we are very excited,” added Walkey in speaking of the Celebration of Lights event. Bring family and friends and enjoy seeing the diversity of, not only Camrose, but the celebration of the season and share in some fun and goodwill.

What does the Bible really say about the return of Jesus? In his book Decoding The Mystery of When Will Jesus Return, pastor Raymond J. Moore draws a unique parallel between the imminent return of Jesus and the stories of Noah and Lot, to highlight the fact that while God had revealed his plan of judgement and deliverance to his righteous servants, everyone else was taken by surprise.

Wisemen’s Way Bookstore 5028-50 Street, Camrose

The Scriptures make it clear that God has not confined His people to ignorance. If Jesus intended His return to be a surprise, He would not have foretold the signs that would pre-empt His return.

Some highlights of this book: •

The return of Jesus and the unique signs that precedes His return.

The great tribulation: 7 years or 3 ½ years?

The rise of the anti-Christ and his destined role.

The final generation that will witness the fulfilment of all remaining prophecies.

An in-depth analysis and comparison of heaven and hell (from God’s perspective).

Jackson debuts new song during Festival of Trees event By Lori Larsen Tom Jackson, actor, singer and lifetime philanthropist, will be making a stop in Camrose on Saturday, Nov. 25 during the Festival of Trees event as part of his Christmas 150 cross Canada tour. “We all need to celebrate this country and our stories. Christmas may never be the same again. So let’s sing about peace and joy like never before. Laugh like the child that you were and don’t miss the chance to accept, or give, the gift of kindness,” said Tom as a kickoff to his Christmas tour. “We are predestined in a period of time, and it happens to be at Christmas, when we think of others hate is most vulnerable. I personally think that, although this time is most acknowledged between Christmas and New Year’s, the affect of that common bond may just be enough to carry us between New Year’s and Christmas (the entire 12 months).” Tom eluded to the fact that the world in is in a state of flux and that people can move along with the ever-changing world by being fluid, his word of choice for this year. Tom’s deep baritone voice and soft-spoken stories combine to give the audience a show that celebrates a truer sense of the season. “Every year, I get to share with others what was shared with me, and what was shared with me was an opportunity to validate love being my oxygen. That comes from having once been in a dark place in my life and the Creator sent me somebody who was worse off then me,” shared Tom. “This is what I share with you. For whatever reason, I decided to help that person and it changed my life instantly. I began to realize that I could breathe,

that I wasn’t trapped. I was awakened. There was a reason to look up and not look down all the time and a great reason to carry on and get that quench that happens when you help somebody.” Tom continued by offering his simple yet effective remedy for days when life is not living up to our expectations. “If someday you are feeling like it is just not happening, we all have those days, if you are on the edge, I encourage you to take control of your life, to empower yourself by doing nothing else but closing your eyes and breathing for 10 seconds. When you open your eyes consciously, go and do something for someone else. “I promise you, you will never be the same. It will change your life.” Tom spoke genuinely about his childhood and what Christmas meant. “My history with my parents growing up was always a great celebration around Christmas. I know all people don’t believe in Jesus Christ, the Prophet, Son of God. But if you believe in the opportunity to open a gift with your child, you will understand the gift of the child.” For 30 years, Tom has toured Canada with his original Christmas creation, “The Huron Carole.” This year, however, it was important to Tom to change up the format, in part to delve deeper into his unique experiences travelling the country sea to sea. “If you go to a coffee shop and talk about what’s on the news, people will talk about what’s on the news. But if you talk about their family, ask them how they got to where they are, wherever that community happens to be, and why they stay there, they are consistent in delivering this message. They are

Tom Jackson

there because there is not a place on the planet they would rather be. What that says to me is they love being home, they love their history, they love bringing up their children where the are. “There are so many places and so many wonderful things to celebrate and talk about in this country. If you talk about celebrating what the land gives them, what their family gives them, what joy is about, people tend to go in that direction.” A practice that would better serve us all. “If you want to celebrate joy in life, you have to start your day that way.” As host and star of the show, Jackson will also be joined on stage by fellow musical guests CCMA humanitarian and multitalented entertainer Beverley Mahood, the soulful and selfless Shannon Gaye, Canadian Smooth Jazz Award winner Kristian Alexandrov and award-winning producer, musician, music director and event producer Tom McKillip, for an evening of diverse varietal songs and stories with multi-media visual accompaniment. “It’s a collection of stories and events relative to

Christmas that’s inspired me from my travels across Canada,” shared Tom. “It includes music you know, or music you discover that shapes cherished moments of the gift.” When asked what one of his favourite Christmas songs is, Tom spoke of two. “I have a historical favourite, the Huron Carole, which in its manifestation as a project, not just a song, has fed millions and millions of people. It is not just a song it becomes something else for me. “I have a new song (also one of his favourites) and it is called Soul Angel,” which he will be debuting for the first time in public in Camrose. “It’s a song that kind of speaks a dream. Close your eyes and dream when you think about Christmas. Do you wonder about Joseph and Mary, the choirs and silent night? “I wonder what happened on Christmas Day when all the choirs went away and the star faded away. What would have happened if one of the angels stayed behind and what if he is still here today? What would he look like, would he be the old man down the lane,” pondered Tom as he broke

into some of the lyrics of Soul Angel, lyrics that are bound to resonate deep in the audience’s soul. “What if the guy on the corner who prays every day that kind of scares you, is the angel that stayed behind to sing the child to sleep? How would you look at him then?” The tour is nationally sponsored by GreatWest Life, London Life and Canada Life, and continues Jackson’s long-time holiday season tradition of giving back to the communities it visits. The national sponsors ensure the tour reaches each destination, while each city’s beneficiary retains all proceeds from Tom Jackson’s Christmas 150. In Camrose, funds will be donated to various organizations including Camrose Food Bank. In concluding the interview, Tom related a sweet story from 20 years ago about two young boys (around five to seven years old) and their declaration that they did not believe in Santa Claus. In a way that comes naturally to Tom to cease the moment, he replied to the two boys, “I’m Santa Claus, are you telling me you don’t believe in me?” Despite the boys resistance, Tom continued, “Did you make a list to tell me what you wanted for Christmas because I didn’t see it. So send me a note I promise you something will happen.” And that year, through the miracle of a kind man, also known as Santa, the two boys did in fact receive their gifts. “Now it is 20 years later and I still get messages from those two boys. And they call me Santa, pretty cool, eh?” Tickets for the Tom Jackson’s Christmas 150, during the Festival of Trees are available at the CRE office, 4250 Exhibition Drive or at eventbrite.ca.

Buffaloes advance to finals By Murray Green

The Camrose Buffaloes football teams continue to have success in the playoffs. The peewee’s played in the semifinal on Oct. 29 and were down three touchdowns at the half. “They played an amazing third quarter, but couldn’t overtake the Ft. Saskatchewan Falcons. At the end of the fourth, with all zeros on the clock, they

had one play left. And they scored a touchdown to tie the game. It all came down to the convert. They ran it in and won the game 32-31. There were tears of joy and pride on that bench,” said Buffaloes spokesperson Rejeanne Matson. The bantams played against the Edmonton Seahawks on Oct. 29 and won 48-8 to advance to the Tier 4 final against Wetaskiwin on Nov. 4.

Liberals are failing the middle class By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot

Congratulations to our successful municipal candidates in communities across Battle RiverCrowfoot. We extend our commendations to all the other candidates who ran for public office. Our democracy relies on strong debate over the issues during election campaigns and it is important to have folks willing to stand up for the issues they believe are important. In Parliament, the Official Opposition is ensuring that the voices of small business owners and the middle class are being heard about the Liberals controversial plan to change the tax regime for small businesses. This Liberal government campaigned on “sharing the prosperity” of economic growth with “the middle class and those wanting to join it.” Their record however, has proven otherwise. Specifically, Canadians have learned that the finance minister Bill Morneau controls a company that owns a villa in the south of France. Morneau failed to disclose this to the ethics commissioner for more than two years. Holding such an asset offers significant tax avoidance, the exact opposite of what this government indicated it wants to halt in its attack on small businesses. This behavior is in complete contradiction to the Prime Minister’s mandate letter to the minister of finance after the last election that states: “We have also committed to set a higher bar for openness and transparency in government. It is time to shine more light on government to ensure it remains focused on the people it serves…if we want Canadians to trust their government, we need a government that trusts Canadians.” The finance minister has been anything but open and transparent. It is important to point out that our current Prime Minister was raised in very wealthy surroundings. He is not a person from the middle class. He has never faced the daily challenges of the average Canadian family and taxpayer so how can we trust him to understand what they are? He thinks it is perfectly fine to accept a vacation on the Aga Khan’s private island, and to charge taxpayers for child care. Recently, we learned that the average Canadian family will pay $841 more per year in taxes under this Liberal government. The previous Conservative government’s tax credits that were implemented to help families have been cancelled by this government and the result is simply higher taxes. The numbers do not lie. Yet the Liberals campaigned on helping the middle class and those wanting to join it. This line is repeated over and over again in hope that if Canadians hear it enough they will believe it. The reality is paycheques are shrinking and everyday family finances have only gotten worse under the Liberal government. I am certain that Canadians can see through this government’s pompous attitude and I trust that you will all continue to stand up to the unfair policies they are trying to impose. The voice of the grassroots cannot be ignored, as we have just witnessed in the small business tax matter. If you have any questions, or concerns regarding this or previous columns you may write me at 494550th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780-6084600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780-608-4603 or e-mail Kevin.Sorenson.c1@parl.gc.ca.

Chamber speaks on proposed tax laws By Lori Larsen A letter from Ken Kobly, president and CEO of Alberta Chambers of Commerce, appearing in the ACC Advocacy newsletter, voiced concern with the proposed federal tax changes. “The federal finance department announced a proposed plan to change Canada’s Tax Act with the goal of punishing “greedy Canadians” who don’t pay their fair share of taxes. “Finance minister Bill Morneau’s narrative to support changing the taxation of Canadian Controlled Private Corporation (CCPC) attempts to mislead the public: that the proposed changes are to protect the middle class who do pay their fair share of taxes.” In his letter Kolby addressed the concerns this proposes to small business owners. “Small business owners ARE the middle class in Canada and thousands of them will be financially knee-capped by the Minister’s proposed policy if it’s implemented. Honest Canadians’ retirements– farmers, florists, painters, welders–will evaporate because they legitimately planned their taxation according to rules which have been in place for more than 40 years. “Small business owners don’t avoid making honest and fair contributions because they pay taxes differently than an employee would. Different mechanisms are available to entrepreneurs because they aren’t eligible for EI benefits, paid maternity leaves, or guaranteed vacations. Or, for that matter, a guaranteed wage. “Small business owners need to keep the lights on and retain employees when the economy takes a downturn (read “crash” if you are in Alberta). They invest in innovation and projects that don’t begin to generate any returns for years, sometimes decades. “While claiming that the new tax provisions are intended to be fair to the middle class by demonizing and gut-punching the upper class, in fact there is a large number of CCPC’s owned by middle-class Canadians who will be critically damaged in the process.” Kolby criticizes the government for creating more risk for small business owners and not recognizing the investments of small Canadian corporations. “We don’t tolerate discrimination on the basis of heritage or gender, and we shouldn’t tolerate it on this issue either. The Minister and his representative colleagues have forgotten they were elected to public

service as legislators, not jurors.” Camrose Chamber

During the Nov. 1 Camrose Chamber of Commerce meeting, MNP LLP Accounting firm partner of the tax group Kevin Nitchke and manager of tax group Clayton Sommer gave a presentation on the new proposed tax changes to private corporations.

Kevin Nitchke

“This is a topic that is very much affecting people in this room,” began Nitchke. “If you have a private corporation these are rules that will likely affect you in some way.” Nitchke explained the proposed changes came about in 2015 when the liberal party talked about their platforms. “They hinted at making changes to the way people were using private corporation in Canada. The idea was that some of the ways that private corporations can be used and the way people can structure their affairs is giving advantage to some people. Had they not had the private corporations they would not have the same advantages.” Nitchke supplied a detailed explanation of the concept of income splitting/ sprinkling and specifically the issues the government has with these practices. “What they are mainly going after here is paying dividends to people who are shareholders of the corporation but not necessarily actively involved in it.” Nitchke spoke in depth about the government’s proposed tax on split income (tosi) rules providing specifics on the existing rules applicable to split income and the proposed changes. “Historically these taxes only applied to minors but what they (government) said is we are going to make them apply to anybody that you are related to, including spouse, adult children, parents, everybody could be caught by these rules. So in other words, if you are not actively involved in the business you could be individuals and have to pay the top tax bracket on any income you receive regardless of what your income from other sources is.” Nitchke added that the government has indicated that if that person

is involved in the business in some way, making contributions to the business then these rules should not affect them. “The difficulty is there is no precedent for having some reasonable test for what somebody can receive on property income. “The good news in the past two weeks or so the government has recognized that there are some legitimate criticisms to these proposed changes that they have brought out and they have suggested that they will work to make it more clear as to when you are and are not subject to these tax split income rules.” Nitchke concluded by explaining to attendees the direct affects on them. “For your own corporations, up to the end of 2017, we are still under the existing rule. If you have family who are shareholders there are no reasonableness tests. It is just a matter of paying them as you have before, maybe you will decide to pay them a little more in the current year because you know these rules are coming in the future. They will take affect on Jan. 1, 2018.”

Clayton Sommer

Sommer provided attendees with information on three concepts including the proposal surrounding passive investment income, in that, passive investment income is different than active income, how, in law an individual is different than a corporation and the principal of integration in Canadian tax. Sommer further explained the concerns the government has with the perceived unfairness of the existing rules. “Their analysis was lacking,” noted Sommer, further explaining certain facts that exist that were not taken into consideration, including some of the other tax benefits individual employees have versus a corporation. Sommer said. “Right now there is no legislation that has been presented on these rules. I think that has a lot to do with the fact that what they are suggesting is going to be incredibly complex. I don’t think that they have it buttoned down yet.”

Shoplifter apprehended November 3

Camrose Police were contacted when staff at a local convenience store recognized a male who had stolen merchandise from their business on a prior occasion. The male who attempted to run from police was quickly apprehended and arrested. The same male was also responsible for two other thefts from a local grocery store. The 38-year-old, who had five outstanding warrants, was charged with

three counts of Theft and Obstruction. A male contacted a business and attempted to purchase a large item with a stolen credit card. The business wisely did not process the purchase. The male had identified himself with a false name and police are investigating the incident. Police responded to several motor vehicle collisions throughout the day due to the icy winter driving conditions.

The Camrose PCN invites Camrose and area residents to attend a Grief and Bereavement Workshop offered in Camrose and Daysland. The one day workshop in Camrose is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 17 at the Camrose Public Library, 4710-50 Avenue. Register by Nov. 10. The same one day workshop will be offered in Daysland on Nov. 30 at the Sunbeam Drop-In Centre, 5007-50 Street. Register by Nov. 23. The workshops are facilitated by Colette Howery and Donna Lynne Erickson and offers attendees information on how to be present with those who are mourning and how to be supportive in simple ways. Participants will gain an understanding on how to bear witness to someone’s grief rather than attempt to fix or cure sadness. “There are no experts in grief and loss,” said Erickson. “If you want to be helpful to someone who

is bereaved, simply walk alongside them in their journey and let them teach you what is meaningful to them,” Howery added. “No one is exempt from the heartache of loss, so let us learn together how we can help each other. This one day workshop offers information, education, inspiration and hope.” The grief and bereavement workshops have been successfully offered for over five years. Camrose PCN executive director Stacey Strilchuk said of the workshops. “Participant feedback has been extremely positive and we know we are making a difference in people’s lives by offering this type of support in the community.” There is no cost to attend these workshops and lunch is provided, however seating is limited so registration is required. For more information and to register, contact the Camrose PCN at 780-608-4927. Space is limited so call today.

Padgett creates the Nashville Hurricane By Murray Green

Chase Padgett returns to Camrose, this time with his Nashville Hurricane story. You will remember him reflecting on six different guitarists with his 6 Guitars show. This year, his show at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre is on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. His story begins 40 years ago about a mysterious acoustic guitarist who appeared from nowhere, conquered the music industry and vanished without a trace. “I only play four songs in the entire show, so I have to rely on my acting abilities and my story telling,” shared Chase. “People who liked 6 Guitars will like Nashville Hurricane. It uses the same skills (of playing characters). I think it is fun, artistically satisfying and no one else does anything like this,” he explained. Chase is a virtuoso actor and musician who becomes a manager, a mother, a mentor and the guitar prodigy himself as each one tells their side of the rise, demise and resurrection of the best guitar player you’ve never heard of the Nashville Hurricane.

“It’s a story of four characters who tell a story in a different way. The songs are at a very high level, so I have to rely on my acting abilities and my story telling,” shared Chase. “It is about a young guitar prodigy, who loves playing guitar, but doesn’t like performing for people. It reflects on his struggles. I have a love-hate relationship with performing. I love performing, but I’m on the road half of the year. It has cost me relationships and it is a career that engulfs your life. “It’s hard to get on stage and perform about things people haven’t heard of. In the future, I’m going to create more of an online presence, so people are more aware of what I’m doing,” he said. After providing various roles at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, including custom song writing for special events, he started performing with the SAK Comedy Lab in Orlando, FL. “I’ve worked on skills for this show all my life. Nobody is going to have a show like this.”

Lund returns with solo act By Murray Green

Corb Lund will be coming home to tour Western Canada this fall, but even diehard fans haven’t seen the Juno award-winning country star in his B.S. with C.L. tour billed as An Evening of Western Conversation, Songs and Stories. Lund will make a stop in Camrose on Tuesday, Nov. 21 for an 8 p.m. show at the Bailey Theatre. “Playing with my band is great, but doing solo shows is a totally different experience that allows me to be more creative and

interact with the audience in a whole new way,” Lund said. “It’ll be a lot of fun, too.” The show will feature Lund playing songs, telling stories and talking with the audience in an intimate and interactive format. Lund released his ninth and most recent album, Things That Can’t Be Undone, in 2015. It was produced by Grammy-nominated producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton). He performed a solo show last year at the Bailey Theatre that thrilled a sold-out audience.

Donny Lee

Donny Lee will be hitting the stage with his Nashville style concert titled Honkytonk Experience in Camrose soon. He will be performing at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Centre on Nov. 15, 1beginning at 7:30 p.m. Donny will be performing songs from old favourites such as Hank Williams Sr., George Jones, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings. He is also not scared to dip into newer music from Eric Church, Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton. He will be playing all of the most requested honky-tonk hits and throwing in a few of his original songs. The Fort Saskatchewan artist introduced his first release to Canadian Country radio in March with “Country Way Of Life” off of his self-titled album Who I Am, made up of seven original songs. That song is about a slower pace of life lived by an older generation who worked hard and enjoyed the simple things. The CD has a more traditional country style with each song telling a

story. His music has been a hit with old-time country music fans. Hot off the heels of his first release came “That Would Be Me” just released in September. Both introductory songs have done very well on the Canadian country music charts. It is about how sometimes we’re too quick to judge another before knowing anything about them. His third release will be out prior to the show called “Another Round Of You.” Donny is currently working with Ole Publishing and will be recording some exciting new material this fall with MCC Recording Studios with Dave Temple and Johnny Gasparic at the helm. Donny has been performing live country music since his early adult years and it is coming around full circle for him with writing and recording his own music. He is able to work hard at perfecting his stage show for the last few years for captive country music audiences in Nashville, all while establishing himself as an Alberta artist. He is an official nominee for Male Artist Of the

Year 2017 with the Alberta Country Music Association. Donny will work hard to be the best artist he can be in representing the Alberta Country Music Association. He discovered early on his gift for connecting with people coupled with his musical talents of singing and entertaining. He has become a very popular act in the Nashville honkytonk music scene and is looking forward to sharing his exciting show and gift of entertaining with his home audience in Alberta. Donny includes songs he’s written with his wife Shauna on the new CD. He started singing in competitions at the age of 10 and is now playing on stage in some of Nashville’s most popular hot spots like Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, Honky Tonk Central and Rippy’s. His dad taught him how to play guitar on a vintage 1965 Gibson Hummingbird when he was young. He now plays what he affectionately calls “Dad’s Guitar” on stage in Nashville as a tribute to his dad who passed away three years ago.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Vera Claythorne (Desiree De Kock), left and Emily Brent (Marlene Maertens-Poole) discuss the details of the murders and their own life. By Murray Green

The Churchmice Players will be performing Agatha Christie’s murder mystery And Then There Were None at the Bailey Theatre, Nov. 9 to 18. Directed by Tania Nease, Churchmice Players tackles one of the greatest murder mysteries ever. “The last time I directed a show was Oklahoma! back in 1997 for Churchmice. My husband, my daughter and myself have been in several musicals over the years, but this year I wanted to step back and try directing again,” said Tania. “We wanted to have a dinner theatre and Murder on the Orient Express is to be coming out again this month, so I thought it would be a tribute to Agatha Christie,” she said. “She is a fantastic author and her plays are really well done. It’s a great opportunity to perform her work and have a lot of fun. It leaves the audience guessing. I love this show because it has you following the entire show wondering which one of the characters did it. Every one of them has a checkered past.” Tania’s friends moved to Camrose about 20 years ago, so that is how they discovered Camrose and the Churchmice Players. Despite living in Edmonton, her family is quite involved in local plays. “It’s been a family event for us. That’s the nice thing about Churchmice, people come from far around the area and all work together,” said Tania. “Of the 11 cast members, five are brand new, so it has been an opportunity to bring more members into theatre.” Ten strangers are summoned to a remote island. The scene of the play is the living room of the house on Indian Island (originally called Nigger Island in the 1943 UK production), actually Burgh Island in Devon, which inspired the setting of the story. All that the guests have in common is a wicked past they’re unwilling to reveal and a secret that will seal their fate. For each has

been marked for murder. As the weather turns and the group is cut off from the mainland, the bloodbath begins and one by one, they are brutally murdered in accordance with the lines of a sinister nursery rhyme. The Churchmice Players will have more than one ending of And Then There Were None, so you get to play detective to solve the mystery. The main characters are Philip Lombard (Jason Adam), Sir Lawrence Wargrave (Mike Hicks), Emily Brent (Marlene MaertensPoole), Dr. Armstrong (Ron Nease), Thomas Rogers (Dale Adam), William Blore (Bradley Moshuk), Ethel Rogers (Marla Moshuk), Vera Claythorne (Desiree De Kock) and General MacKenzie (Ken Davy). The murder mystery will have eight shows (Nov. 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18 at 8 p.m. and two matinees at 2 p.m. on Nov. 12 and 18). Check for dinner theatre performances. And Then There Were None is a 1943 play by crime writer Christie. The play, like the 1939 book on which it is based, was originally titled and performed in the UK as Ten Little Niggers. It was also performed under the name Ten Little Indians. In the United States, the title was deemed to be offensive and was changed. The book was very well received upon publication and soon after, Christie received a request from Reginald Simpson to be allowed to dramatise it. She knew the ending would have to be changed. After a try-out at the Wimbledon Theatre starting on Sept. 20, 1943, the play opened in the West End at the St. James’ Theatre on Nov. 17. It gained good reviews and ran for 260 performances until Feb. 24, 1944 when the theatre was bombed. It then transferred to the Cambridge Theatre, opening on Feb. 29 and running at that venue until May 6. It then transferred back to the restored St. James’ on May 9 and finally closed on July 1.

Remembrance Day honours our freedom By Murray Green

The Remembrance Day service held on Friday, Nov. 11 at the Camrose Regional Exhibition beginning at 11 a.m. will not only honour those who gave their lives, but also those who live with the horrors of war throughout their lives. The Camrose Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will lead the Remembrance Day ceremony and members ask that people be seated by 10:45 a.m. so they can be prepared to start on time, because of the observation of two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. Legion members and cadets from South Alberta Light Horse Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps and Air Cadets in Camrose will participate in the service, as well as a local policeman and fireman. The CCHS band will be providing the music and community groups such as the Cubs and Scouts will join the parade march led by veterans. It is easy to honour those who gave their lives so we could enjoy freedom. It is much harder to help those who return scarred from what they saw or did in war situations. “We have a special local speaker this year,” said Camrose Legion organizer Ragnar Gislasin.

Guest speaker Venerable Jacques Vaillancourt, Archdeacon for Rural Ministry at the St. Andrew’s Church in Camrose, served in the military. “I was a military Chaplain for 20 years and then retired from service. My last posting was in Wainwright

visit,” said Vaillancourt,

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer joined Comrades Ragnar Gislasin, Dale Debnam and Pete Steinman in raising the Poppy Flag to mark the beginning of poppy sales in the area.

and then my wife and I wanted to have roots in a community and serve at a

church. The Bishop said several churches were open and one of them was in Camrose.

We had often stopped here for shopping and it felt like home right from the first

who moved to Camrose five years ago after a very nomadic period. Mayor Norm Mayer will be making his address to honour local people who fought in the world conflicts. MLA Kevin Sorenson and MLA Bruce Hinkley will be delivering or sending a message. Bob Bailey will be playing the trumpet and Alex Oliver will be playing the bagpipes. A local cadet will read from a letter about someone who is remembered at the tomb of the unknown soldier. “We are having the Camrose Children’s Choir back to perform again this year,” said Comrade Gislasin, about the popular addition. A reading of In Flanders Fields, several songs and laying of wreaths will also be part of the service. “This may, or may not, be our last time in the CRE. We have been holding the services with them (the exhibition group) since 1954 for free. They want to charge us and we don’t have the money, so we might have to find a different location that can accommodate about 1,500 people,” explained Gislasin. “The Remembrance Day service is the largest gathering of people in Camrose outside of Big Valley Jamboree. This is my last year organizing it and I want to make it a good one.”

Ryley McMillan, 9, and Myles Newton, 5, of Stratford spotted each other for the first time through a fence that separated their neighbouring school and day care. Noticing that they both share something special, they would often give each other a wave. Today, the boys share a strong friendship as well as a Remembrance Day tradition. Ryley was born a left arm amputee and Myles a right leg amputee. They are both members of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program. War amputee veterans created The War Amps in 1918, its Key Tag Service in 1946, and later, the CHAMP Program. Since 1975, thousands of child amputees have received financial assistance for their artificial limbs through CHAMP and have attended regional seminars where they learn about growing up as an amputee. For the past couple of years, Ryley and Myles

have laid a wreath together at their local Remembrance Day ceremony on behalf of The War Amps Operation Legacy. By doing this, they pay tribute to the sacrifices of the war amputee veterans who started the association. Rebecca, Myles’ mom, said it is important for her son to mark Remembrance Day by laying a wreath. “To know that veterans were part of creating the CHAMP Program, which we are so grateful for today, makes it important for him to have that connection.” It was at a War Amps CHAMP seminar, an annual regional event for child amputees and their parents, that the two boys met for the first time without a fence separating them. Ryley has attended many seminars, which his mom, Crystal, describes as a powerful experience. “It put us at ease to know that he was going to be okay. The War Amps has supported us emotionally and supported Ryley to do things like any other child.” But the boys’ friendship

extends beyond the seminars and Remembrance Day. Rebecca said Myles looks up to Ryley, who often

plays hockey on their backyard rink in the winter. To see Ryley not letting his amputation stop him

from being active reminds Myles that he too can do anything he sets his mind to.

Mechanic Taves places well at World Skills in Abu Dhabi By Murray Green

Fountain Tire auto service technician Aaron Taves enjoyed his run in the Skills Canada competition. It took him to places he wouldn’t have gone, such as Abu Dhabi. Taves joined 30 other members of Team Canada in Abu Dhabi for the WorldSkills Competition, an international event where youth from 60 regions compete in 50 disciplines ranging from aircraft maintenance to welding in October. Taves was in the automobile technology category. “When I was in Grade 11, I went to my first regional competition at Lakeland College. I was able to move on to provincials, but lost out. The next year, I received gold at regionals and provincials to go on to nationals,” he recalled. He came back from Saskatoon with a silver medal. Aaron started his apprenticeship at Midas in Cam-

rose before moving over to Fountain Tire. Then he started his post-secondary competitions. Aaron proceeded to the WorldSkills Team Canada Trials in January 2017 where he qualified for the team. “I went to provincials and nationals again, but more importantly, an opportunity to compete for Team Canada at the WorldSkills event. I practised for 16 months.” To prepare for competition, Taves travelled to Edmonton three times a week to meet with an instructor at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology after putting a day’s work and working around his duties as a Camrose Firefighter. “My Fountain Tire store has been incredibly supportive of my training, providing a flexible schedule, access to the shop and ongoing mentorship,” said Taves. By Lori Larsen Travelling hundreds of miles to seek out donation items was nothing for Ralph Sorenson because it was all for a good cause and the betterment of the communities that are near and dear to his heart. In 1907, Ralph’s parents Andrew and Mary moved from Minnesota to a farm near Killam. Ralph was born in 1927, one of six siblings, including three boys and three girls. Like many other rural Alberta boys, Ralph worked hard on the farm and played hockey and baseball. “Of course going to a country school, you learned to skate on the slough and play ball at noon hour,” noted Ralph. “I loved trapping when I was young. Weasel, beaver, muskrat and coyotes. Fur prices were good and times were hard on the farm.” In 1954, Ralph married Jean (Rancier). They have celebrated 63 years of marriage, a rarity by today’s standards. “I took notice of her (Jean) when she was 14 or 15. Her and her sister sang on the Search for Talent, she had a great voice,” said Ralph as he glanced over at Jean and smiled. Jean and Ralph raised four wonderful children, Kevin, Leon, Leighton and Janelle. Keeping busy on the farm was never a problem, but Ralph always found time to be an active member of his church, serving on a variety of committees and as a church deacon and, together with Jean,

sang at seniors’ homes for years. From 1971-75, Ralph also represented Sedgewick-Coronation as Social Credit MLA in the Alberta Legislature and in 2012, was inducted into the Killam Hall of Fame as a contemporary nominee. His passion for helping extended beyond his family and friends and took on a life of its own in 1996 when he started a charity auction and garage sale in Killam. “We thought we would do it for a year,” said Ralph. “But now we are working on our 22nd year. “We wanted to try something different and we thought about the Gwynne Children’s Home. There was a family there and they would take in little orphaned children and we heard about them.” On his own time, using his own transportation and at his own expense, Ralph has since been scouring the countryside looking for donations from whomever and whatever businesses are willing to give to the, now annual, Killam Charity Auction and Garage Sale. All the proceeds raised during the charity auction and garage sale are donated to various charities in and around Ralph’s hometown of Killam. “We started quite early giving to five hospitals, Hardisty, Daysland, Killam, Viking and St. Mary’s (Camrose). “And we have been giving to the Camrose Women’s Shelter here for many years, also STARS Air

Ambulance, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and Gwynne Children’s Home, now run out of Hope Mission (in Edmonton).” Ralph noted that the Killam Charity Auction and Garage Sale has also donated to various international disaster relief funds, youth camps and even to a young man in Strome who required medical treatment in Toronto. The arms of the Killam auction are far reaching and extremely generous. Vowing to retire from being the organizer of the charity auction for a few years now, Ralph thinks the decision might be final. “I can’t think of anyone who would carry it on.” Whomever carries on the auction will not only have Ralph and Jean’s vast knowledge on how to run a successful not-for-profit, but neatly, organized scrapbooks containing a plethora of information on each year’s event, including names of volunteers, cards and names of donors, itemized lists and photographs of the goods collected and bidding lists. Pointing to a photo of items in the scrapbook Ralph declared, “The first thing sold (this year) was the Canadian flag. One fellow said I wouldn’t give you 5 cents for that and it went for $60.” In recognition of his unselfish dedication to the betterment of Killam and surrounding communities, Ralph was awarded the Senate of Canada’s 150th Commemorative Medal. The medals are being given to 1,500 Canadians who have shown a deep and unfaltering dedication to their communities and through their hard work, generosity, volunteerism and dedication, have made their communities or region a better place to live. Amidst family, farming, friends and fundraising, Ralph has managed to find some time for a few pastimes including collecting historical memorabilia. “I started in about Grade 2 or 3 with hockey, baseball and boxing. Joe Louis was my idol.” Ralph has amassed scrapbooks on these sports as well as Second World War, and has a collection of stamps (blocks of four) from when they were priced at 2 cents and up. “I’ve been giving hockey scrapbooks to one grandson for a number of Christmases and some of the war scrapbooks I have been giving away at Christmas to a guy who is a history buff.” It is apparent Ralph’s generous heart for giving even includes some of his most cherished items.

Lois Jean Kerr April 11, 1940~ October 27, 2017 Lois Jean Kerr of Camrose, formerly of Ferintosh, Alberta, passed away on Friday, October 27, 2017 at the age of 77 years. Lois was born to Pearl and Art Cook on April 11, 1940 at Elk Point, Alberta. She took most of her schooling in the Camrose area, leaving school to work and help support the family at an early age. It was at this time, while working at the Edberg Café, that she met William (Bill) Kerr. He stopped in for raisin pie quite frequently and their love blossomed. It was a love that was to last more than 54 years. They were married on February 14, 1958, and soon began their family. Lois worked mostly in the home, caring for her family, and always had a good meal prepared for any company that would stop by. Everyone was always welcome, and most often the “Kerrs” hosted the family get-togethers. Lois was predeceased in 2011 by the love of her life, Bill; her parents Pearl Mitty and Art Cook; as well as her stepfather Bill Mitty (whom she always considered Dad); her brother Don; and her sister Carol. She is lovingly missed and will always be cherished by her daughters Judy (Ross) Anderson of Ferintosh, Shawn (Darryl) Yates of Duffield, Sherry (Doug) Riske of Edberg, Patty (Wayne) of Mundare and Lori (Calvin) of Tillicum Beach; and one son Larry of Edmonton. She is also survived by her brothers Lorn (Gail) Cook of Lethbridge and Dwayne (Laurel) Mitty of Camrose; Aunt Phyllis Wilke of Ohaton; twelve grandchildren Lisa, Dianna, Kevin, Ryan, Chad, Amanda, Christopher, Meagan, Becky, Kayla, Krysta and Jesse. “Mama and Papa” also have eight great-grandchildren Rylee, Jason, Carter, William, Archer, Lucas, Esme and Jayce. Lois is also survived by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; held a special place in her heart for “Auntie Ellen”; many nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and friends. Although we will miss her very much, we find comfort in knowing that she is with Dad, which was something she wished for ever since his passing. Our family thanks you for your care and support during this time. May the stars carry your sadness away May flowers fill your heart with beauty May hope forever wipe away your tears And, above all, may silence make you strong

The family of

Josephine Heslenfeld …would like to express our greatest appreciation to the following: Father Carlos Nunez, from Our Lady of the Prairies Catholic Church, for being present for us. To Derek Robertson and staff of Burgar Funeral Home for the compassionate guidance we received while making funeral arrangements. We also want to thank the staff at Daysland Health Centre: Palliative Nurse Pam, Dr. Huang and the wonderful caring nurses there. Daysland Homecare has given countless hours of care and support over the past year or so, and we thank you so much. Although brief, Mom’s time at St. Mary’s Hospital under the care of Dr. Brzezinski and nurses was greatly appreciated, as was Calvin at Wetaskiwin Hospital Diagnostic Imaging Department, and, not least, the compassionate paramedics during transport – all your kindnesses made a big difference for us during those last few days. Thanks to all of you who sent donations to Mom’s favourite charities and for all the beautiful flowers – from Holland and from Canada.

The automotive section of

An automotive 1929 time capsule By Ron Pilger The June 28, 1960 issue of The Camrose Booster contained a classified ad that really caught the eye of Don MacLeod, who lived (and still lives) several miles southeast of Ohaton. “Someone was selling a 1929 Pontiac Big Six fivepassenger Tudor Sedan,” recalls Don. “I only knew of one such car in the Camrose area and I knew in a heartbeat that, if the car being offered was the car I was thinking of, I wanted it badly.” Ed Kremmin, who just happened to have farmed nearby the MacLeod family, was indeed the seller. He also was the original purchaser of this prized automobile! He had just retired and moved into a seniors’ facility in Camrose. “I called Mr. Kremmin and we struck a deal. I bought the car for $100! It came with a complete set of four additional tires. Though the car was sitting outside in the gravel parking lot at the lodge, we had to pick up the tires out in the village of Ohaton at the local service garage. On the drive out, Mr. Kremmin got the car up to 60 miles per hour. I thought he was going a bit fast for the car and the road,” notes Don with a bit of a laugh. Fifty-seven years after he bought this amazing vintage car, it remains a virtual automotive time capsule both inside and out. The plush, cloth upholstery is in remarkable shape. Only a roll-down window shade which blocked light from coming through the rear window has deteriorated with time. The operator’s manual is still inside the car, as is a host of yellowed-with-age, service records. The dash is simple, but effective. Gauges

include an ammeter, fuel gauge and speedometer. There is a switch for the windshield wipers which are vacuum operated. Oddly absent is an engine temperature gauge – it is not found on this model of 1929 Pontiac cars. MacLeod explains the purpose of the fuel primer pump rod which is positioned on the right side of the dash: “You pull out and then quickly push in this rod three or four times before you do a cold engine start. It forces shots of gas directly into the engine for quicker, more reliable starts.” A choke and throttle complete the simple, painted dash. The speedometer, which still functions as well as the day it rolled out of the Michigan factory where Pontiacs were entirely hand assembled, depicts 32,280 miles of use. The mileage likely represents hundreds of trips into Camrose for groceries and needs for the Kremmin farm. Beneath the sheet metal of Pontiac automobiles of the era is a sturdy, but complex, hardwood framework structure. Breakdown of this wood due to years of travel on rough roads and less than careful use is the reason that so few Pontiacs of this age have survived. MacLeod’s prized possession is a virtual oneof-a-kind. The main dark blue body paint and yellow pin-striping is thought to be factory original. The black fenders and running boards appear to have been repainted at some point prior to 1960. The woodspoked wheels are near perfect. The in-line six-cylinder motor purrs as one would hope and expect. The three-speed transmission works flawlessly. The sixvolt electrical system keeps

the battery charged and the headlights and cowl lamps operative. Interestingly, the car features just a driver’s side rear brake/ tail light, immediately below the original authentic license plate. “I got a wonderful set of 1929 plates from Arne Sorensen, a friend in Camrose,” recalls MacLeod. T he four-wheel mechanical brakes provide safe and secure stopping power. Flaws with the car? Two pieces of glass in the car have cracked over time. And, the old ride’s radiator cap, which is the head of a famous, fearless Indian Chief named Pontiac, is slightly damaged. “His headdress feathers have broken off a bit,” points out Don. “It’s a hard piece to find.” As are cars this old, this original and this remarkably good. “And one more thing I’d better add,” exclaims Don. “No, it’s not for sale!”

Mechanic Taves places well at WorldSkills in Abu Dhabi Continued from page 26

“My Fountain Tire store has been incredibly supportive of my training, providing a flexible schedule, access to the shop and ongoing mentorship,” said Taves. “In turn, my training has improved my work. The more knowledgeable I become on all the systems of a vehicle, the more effectively and efficiently I can problem solve for our customers.”

At WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017, Aaron competed in eight, two-hour competitions over four days. Challenges spanned topics such as electrical systems, brake and stability control, networks and diagnostics. “You are judged individually at each competition for time procedure and the accuracy that you do things,” said Aaron. “I was competing against 37

countries and I was able to place in the 11th position. I was able to earn a Medallion of Excellence for placing in the top third. Canadians have earned the medal before as a standard of excellence, but I just wanted to do the best that I could.” He certainly accomplished that goal. “I am more than happy with the way things went. My work-

place has allowed me to keep improving.” Fountain Tire wants to be known as a place to fix your vehicle and not just a tire store. Aaron is helping change that stereotype. “This gives us a little more recognition. We are very proud of Aaron’s accomplishments. I didn’t know a lot about the skills competitions until Aaron came on board with us. Since then, I’ve seen what a

valuable program it is and how difficult it is to have good success,” said Camrose east end store manager Jason Fleck. “Aaron is a bright young man, he worked hard and had a lot of focus in preparing for the world event.” Providing the highest quality of customer service and automotive care is the top priority at Fountain Tire Camrose. “To have a high-end technical technician like Aaron is a great asset to have here,” said Jason. “We are happy he chose to be part of our team. The people that benefit are our customers.” Now that Aaron has

gone to WorldSkills his competitions are over, but that isn’t going to stop him from working hard to improve his skills. “It was hard work and long hours, but it has been worth it. I am 10 times better as an automotive technician than I was before,” said Aaron, who hopes to finish his apprenticeship this spring. “I want to keep my doors open as for the future. I might consider being a mentor or joining the skills competition as a committee member who makes up the competition.” Aaron turned his passion for cars into a career. “Most people can replace parts. Where I get my satisfaction from is solving problems and helping people.” He also plans to be more involved in motorcycle racing in the future. “It is different than working on vehicles, so it is a nice break.”

CCHS to induct four new members to the Wall of Fame By Lori Larsen

École Camrose Composite High School (CCHS) invites residents of Camrose and area to join in the ceremony of inducting four new members to the Wall of Fame. Distinguished alumna/ us Donna Coombs, Leonard Greenwood, Norman Daley and distinguished faculty Gary Vornbrock will be inducted on Friday, Nov. 17 from 12:30 until 2 p.m. at the ECCHS library. Donna Coombs

Donna Coombs (Thorpe), graduated from CCHS in 1977 and then entered into the Police Sciences program at Mount Royal College. Immediately following college graduation in 1979, she was hired by the Camrose Police Service making history as Camrose’s first female police officer. After serving with the Camrose Police Service, she applied and was hired with the Calgary Police Service, where she served for 14 years. Her professional work in a number of sensitive cases earned letters of commendation from three senior officers. Due to budgetary restraints a number of officers were laid off from the Calgary Police Service, of which Donna was one. With her husband Douglas she then returned to Camrose. Donna’s continued work experience included working for security at Camrose Pipe then she later became the first female employee to rebuild transmission at Transmis-

sion Express, which she did until a shoulder injury prevented her from continuing with such a physically demanding job. After earning a diploma in Business Administration Assistant she began working for Service Options for Seniors as an executive assistant and was appointed executive director in 2007. She finds this role the most challenging and rewarding of her career. Donna has two children, son Chris and daughter Jenny, and during their younger years Donna spent hours volunteering as a leader for the Scouts. Because of close family ties to the Canadian Forces, she has served in the Royal Canadian Legion’s Ladies’ Auxiliary for more than 35 years. Donna draws the experience she gained in her long and varied career to help make other peoples’ lives better. Norm Daley

accounting firm in Kamloops. The foundation of Norm’s professional success rests on family and community service. He and wife Caroline have raised three children. Under Norm’s direction and example, Daley and Company, LLP focuses on making volunteerism an integral part of the firm. Norm coached minor sports when his children were young and has continually volunteered in his community. He hosted the Canada Cup of Curling, the Tim Hortons Brier, the World Women’s Hockey Championship, the Kamloops Blazers Hockey Club and helped with the construction of an indoor facility for Kamloops Minor Baseball. He is also secretary treasurer for the Thomson Rivers University Foundation. Norm’s business acumen and commitment to community have been recognized locally as he was named the Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year and given the Pioneer Spirit award. Provincially, he has been presented with the British Columbia Community Service Award, the Sport BC Kaizen Award and the British Columbia Institute of Charted Accountants have recognized his extensive volunteerism. Dr. Leonard Greenwood

As a student at CCHS, Norm was a keen student athlete and co-captain of the undefeated championship football team. Following his graduation in 1979, he began studying for his Bachelor of Commerce. After graduating from university in 1986, he moved to Kamloops and completed his articles as a chartered accountant in 1988. Three years later he began the one man firm, Daley and Company, LLP Charted Accountants, which is now the largest

Leonard Greenwood graduated from CCHS in 1972. His undergraduate studies at Camrose Lutheran College (now University

of Alberta Augustana) and the University of Alberta included physics, English and religious studies with a later focus on psychology. He graduated with distinction from the U of A and was awarded his Bachelor of Arts in 1977. His first job after university was mowing lawns with troubled youth. Soon after he was hired as a social worker for youth in the town of Brooks. Because the work left little time for a clinical practice, he moved to the northern Fort St. John, (northern British Columbia) to work as an addictions counsellor. His work as an addictions counsellor taught him important lessons about personal and community responsibility and lead him to further training in the field he found so compelling. He moved to Winnipeg where he studied for and earned a Master of Arts in 1989 and his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 1996. The focus of his practice gradually shifted to youth mental health, addiction recovery and a broad general practice for children, youth and adults. Presently Dr. Greenwood works in a private practice clinical setting and at Winnipeg’s largest hospital, the Health Sciences Centre. He is also an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Manitoba. He has served at high levels in the Manitoba Psychological Society, the Canadian Psychological Association and the American Psychological Association. He has authored and coauthored more than fifty scholarly publications, is greatly respected among his peers and has been the recipient of a number of prestigious awards including Distinguished Life Member of his professional association. Dr. Greenwood has two children and lives with Terumi.

Gary Vornbrock

After graduating from high school in Rosalind, Gary attended Camrose Lutheran College, (now University of Alberta Augustana) later transferring to the University of Alberta where he earned a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Education. Prior to coming to CCHS to teach science in 1979, he taught in Rosalind and Charlie Killam School. While teaching, he continued his education with the U of A, earning a graduate diploma in education and a Master of Education. Throughout his teaching career, Gary demonstrated a love of both science and education to all of his students. He continually questions the status quo and was relentless in his quest to help students become better learners. He was especially passionate in his desire to help students who struggled in their studies to become strong, resilient and productive members of society. From 1985 until 2005 Gary served as vice-principal and developed a reputation for being firm, but fair. His thoughtfulness and common sense made him a valued mentor to young teachers who sought his guidance. In addition to his teaching and administrative duties, Gary was very involved in the school’s extra curricular curling program and served on a range of committees with the Alberta Teachers Association. Gary and his wife Star have three adult children, who are all graduates of CCHS.

Grateful Grannies hold annual Christmas market

By Lori Larsen

Christmas is the perfect time to look for that special gift, one that is handcrafted and unique to the artisan. The Grateful Grannies Christmas market, being held on Nov. 25 from noon until 3 p.m. at the historic Bailey Theatre, offers just that, a variety of handcrafted, homemade and other items to chose from. Proceeds from the sales of donated items at the market go towards the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmother to Grandmother campaign. It is worth the trip out to the market to browse local crafts including one-

of-a-kind items, jewelry and accessories, art, glassware, Christmas and specialty cards, quilted and knit or crocheted items, and of course the popular AIDS Angels. Along with the vast selec-

tion of items to shop from, guests will enjoy hot apple cider and snacks all the while listening to live music from the Wetaskiwin Strings. The Grateful Grannies are comprised of over 100 grandmothers and grand

“others” from Camrose and area. They are one of over 240 grandmother groups across Canada who raise funds to assist grandmothers in 15 countries in subSaharan Africa who care for a generation of orphaned grandchildren and others affected by AIDS/HIV. African grandmothers are central to the life of their communities. They care for millions of children, sometimes as many as ten to fifteen in one household. Working with community level groups in Africa the Stephen Lewis Foundation provides a wide range of supports, including feed-

ing programs, housing, education, and counselling. “We all know that fundraising is sometimes just plain hard work, but we keep going back for more,” remarked Camrose Grateful Grannie market chair person Janet Galenza. “Not only for our sister grandmothers in Africa, who do so much with so little, but for the rewards and joy we discover right here at home.” Spoken from the heart of the group, “We will not rest until they can rest.” For more information about the event or to donate any handmade item(s) please contact Janet Galenza at 780-679-2676.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Green heads local cowboys in rodeo By Murray Green

Layton Green of Meeting Creek finished the season on the pro rodeo tour in first place in the saddle bronc event to earn himself a trip to the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton Nov. 8 to 12. Justin Berg of Camrose finished in eighth place and will be challenging him for the title. Zeke Thurston, second, and Josh Harden, 11th, both of Big Valley, advanced to the finals and will be cheered on by local rodeo fans. In bull riding, Layton’s brother Garrett Green of Meeting Creek moved up

to third place and has a shot at winning it all at the finals. A couple of Ponoka boys, Wacey Finkbeiner and Tyler Pankewitz, also had a fine season. Riley Warren of Stettler and Erik Dublanko of Thorsby are the most local cowboys in the tie-down roping event. Curtis Cassidy of Donalda placed third in the steer wrestling event and is vying for the national title. Scott Guenthner of Provost, Chance Butterfield of Ponoka and Brendan Laye of Consort are hoping to have a good run.

Rene Leclercq of Holden finished strong in ladies’ barrel racing to move up to 10th during the season to qualify. Kirsty White and Diane Skocdopole of Big Valley will also battle for the crown. In team roping, Brett McCarroll of Camrose was 10th in heeling and Justin McCarroll of Camrose was fourth in heading on the pro tour. Levi Simpson of Ponoka was the top header. There will be six performances, one a day except for Saturday where there will be an afternoon and evening show.

Bears fight through By Murray Green

Two more one goal losses have the Camrose Kodiaks feeling a little snake-bitten after games on Oct. 27 and 28. “We’ve had some good, hard practices this week and we have been working on going back to the basics and doing the little things right again,” said Jacob Kendall. “We have strayed from that lately and it can be the difference between winning and losing. We are reminding ourselves of what it takes to be a winning team. The coaching staff is doing a great job to get us back on track.” Despite outplaying and outshooting the Calgary Canucks, the southern team scored late in the third period to pull off a 4-3 victory. The Kodiaks got on the scoreboard first on a Nic Correale tally on the power play. However, the Canucks fought back to tie the game late in the first frame. In the second, it was Calgary that scored first, only to have the Kodiaks net the equalizer off of Zach Vinnell’s stick. Calgary went ahead again in the third before Brock Bremer brought Camrose even once more. With less than three minutes left the Canucks potted the winner. Camrose outshot their opposition 41-25. Goalie Griffin Bowerman stopped 21 of 25 shots. Kendall scored the only goal for the Kodiaks in the third frame, but it tied the game against the Okotoks Oilers to send the match into overtime. “I had a good summer of training and I feel better and comfortable this season. That was my goal, to be more important this year and put more pucks in the net and be a leader.” After a scoreless extra frame, the Oilers outscored Camrose 2-1 in the shootout to win 4-3. Okotoks led 2-1 after the first with Kyler Kupka scoring the Kodiaks’ marker. It was Ryan Hartman netting the tally in the second in the close, but tough middle period. Goalie Landon Pavlisin made 31 of 34 saves in the Camrose net.“Okotoks is ranked number one in the country and we were within a goal of them, so it shows how we can play. We know that we are good, we just need more consistency and play a full 60 minutes.” Kendall grew up in Camrose playing minor hockey and admiring the Kodiaks. “I remember when I was little and looking up to the Kodiaks. We billeted players and I was seven years old dreaming to play for the Kodiaks. Continued on page 37
