Lights to Remember is an annual event that the Hospice Society of Camrose and District is proud to sponsor. The Society wants to give individuals an opportunity to remember and recognize those persons we have loved and lost. The Society will hold a ceremony at the Bill Fowler Centre on Thursday, December 14 at 7 p.m. There will be some caroling, readings and a candle-lighting ceremony around the big lit-up spruce tree near the Centre. There is a sign in front of the tree that marks “LTR HSCD” – it is visible as you drive by the lake. The evening will close with refreshments and some fellowship. Everyone is welcome to attend. This year, we have also chosen to bring a mini LTR ceremony to some of the seniors’ buildings in the Camrose and Daysland area. This will give more people in our communities the opportunity to mark the holidays in a special remembrance of a loved one. If you would like to donate to the HSCD Lights to Remember campaign, you can do so on the website www.camrosehospice.org, at any of our events or by contacting the HSCD at 780.608.0636.

Lions tree lot now open By Lori Larsen

For many, decorating the tree at Christmas is symbol of the season deeply rooted in tradition, a big part of which is picking out the tree. The Camrose Swans and Roses Lions Club has become a part of that tradition with their annual tree lot. The lot is located in the north end parking lot of the Norsemen Inn, look for the 14-foot Santa. The lot is now set up and Swans and Roses Lions volunteers are ready to help you pick out your perfect tree.

Simply take your ‘Good Buy to Hunger’ bag to any cashier

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Santa waves people into the Swans and Roses Lions Club tree lot.

The lot will be open seven days a week from 1 until 7 p.m. Volunteers will be on hand to help you unwrap your tree, ensuring it is the perfect fit for your home. They will cut the bottom at your request and will even deliver (in town). The lot will carry a variety of tree sizes. “All the proceeds from the sale of trees go to support local charities through the Swans and Roses Lions Club,” said Lion Gary Cunningham. “When you buy trees from us, the money stays in town.” The Lions Club is also a distributor for Nutters seasonal nut trays. Members at the Christmas tree lot will be happy to take orders and information on the trays will available there as well. Last year, the Lions lot sold 250 trees, and they will continue selling this year until the week before Christmas, or until supplies last. “We would like to thank everyone for their continual support of the tree lot. It has always been a great success,” added Gary. Come down to the Lions tree lot and take a stroll through the decorated lot. “We may even have a warm beverage (hot chocolate) for you and candy canes for the children.”

Letters to the Editor Just an idea

The Camrose Booster’s 65th anniversary is taking me back to childhood memories of the paper’s early days–and reflections about the impact of searing experiences and the power of an idea. The paper started on a card table in my parents’ bedroom. The idea of a freedelivery paper was radical. The idea of turning it into a business was a complete leap of faith. The first expansion was from my parents’ bedroom to the basement of our home, with some remodelling to put in counters and shelves. When the paper first began, it was printed by a similar paper in Ponoka. A huge leap forward was when the Booster got its own printing press–a multilith offset press. I remember falling asleep to the rhythmic sound of the printing press in the basement. The first staff person (besides my parents and the carriers who delivered the papers) was a young woman who helped to create the pages. After the Booster got its own printing press, a crew of ladies came in on Tuesdays to collate and staple the papers by hand. Our home was a 625 square foot story-and-a-half. Mom, dad and four kids lived on the main floor and halfupstairs. With the addition of as many as eight people working in the basement, it could get a tad crowded, not to mention having little privacy for the family. Some years later came the second expansion. Besides needing more room, one incident was a kicker. One Christmas morning, while we were opening gifts under the tree, someone came to the door to place a classified ad. It took a while to find a location, put together the finances and remodel the space, but the Booster’s next move was to a former garage space downtown. That created more room for the business, and a space remodelled for the functions of the Booster’s operation. It also created more room and privacy for the family at home. The physical location of the Booster’s operation moved, but the Booster never left our family’s home. From 1952 on, the Booster and our family life were inextricably entwined. I’m not sure we even separated “family” and “business” in our minds. I suspect anyone who’s started a business and anyone who farms knows about that. For my parents, I think it was not just what they did, it was who they were. “Booster Bill” was not just my father’s nickname, but his identity. Around the time of the Booster’s 50th anniversary, mom was asked to tell a bit of the Booster’s story at a meeting of the Probus Club. The club invited family members to attend and I went with two of my nieces, mom’s two youngest granddaughters, who were teenagers. As I listened, matching mom’s adult story with my childhood memories, it struck me for the first time how young my parents were when they launched the Booster–34 and 32 with four little kids aged two to 10 and what a huge risk they took. They poured every resource they had and more into the venture, with zero certainty that it would work. After Mom’s presentation, one of my nieces said to me, wideeyed, “Wow. All they had was an idea!” A generation seared? It’s occurred to me that my parents’ generation–the children of early Western Canadian settlers–was unique. As children and adolescents, they lived through The Great Depression of the 1930s. They had to be resilient and they had to help one another or they died. At the same time as they struggled to survive, those families created school districts and rural electrification programs and in many other ways built communities. As young adults, they went through the Second World War. After those searing experiences, maybe a passionate commitment to the well-being of the community, and a willingness to take risks with nothing but an idea, were by-products. Just an idea…and what’s your equivalent experience? ***

I would just like to give a heads up on a scam I haven’t seen before. The number on the call display was 876-5322064 Jamaica. The guy said we had won a new Mercedes and $2 million which they would deliver to the house if we just gave some additional info. When we said we would just wait and maybe talk to whoever delivered the car, he hung up. Didn’t even give me

a chance to tell him what I thought of him, which I won’t repeat here. John Parry, Camrose Health system

What is wrong with our health system? During the summer of 2017 I was admitted to the Camrose Hospital-multimyeloma, and was told it was terminal, I was sent to U of A in Edmonton again told it was terminal, from there to Cross Cancer Institute, terminal. I then went back to U of A. I had many visits from specialists with some trainees, which seemed they came out of their own free will through greed. These young trainees may have learned something medical, however nothing about ethics or common sense. Greed would trump common sense with most

doctors I’ve seen over the last 40 or so years. At the U of A they would draw blood from me many times each day. Then they had to give me a transfusion. Why when I was terminal? My blood pressure has always been slightly above normal, most doctors I’ve seen over the last many years immediately wanted to give me pills, I always refused. The last few days at the U of A hospital I refused drawing of blood, blood pressure pills and vitamins. The resident doctor wanted to test for low sugar every four hours for a week, 42 times–we had words and they decided twice per day was sufficient. Is it any wonder our system is in a mess. The way I see it. Raymond Burd, Camrose

7th ANNUAL In past years, you have willingly and generously helped us fill (make that overload) a hot tub with non-perishable food items for the Food Bank. You took us up on our challenge of a $500 pledge if we were able to meet the goal of a heaping tub of groceries. This year we aspire to stuff a 7’x 7’ x 3-1/2’ deep hot tub with a new supply of food for Camrose & District Food Bank. We start today! If we can get the job done on or before noon December 22, we will make a donation of $500 (along with your donations) to our food bank. This year’s need is significant. It’s our small way of helping make Christmas a brighter and less stressful time of year for others. – Russ and Doneal Greipl

Roughly 23,900 people will be thrilled with what they are about to read.

Unfortunately, everyone else banks elsewhere. Vision Credit Union member-owners will be getting a very attractive member bonus in early December. How nice?

How will this profit share allocation work? It’s very simple. 25% of the interest you paid on loans or a mortgage will be returned to you in the form of profit share. Also, 25% of interest you have earned on deposits will be returned to you. You will see your share of the profit allocated to your common share account in early December.

Well, how does

25% sound?

I bank elsewhere. How do I become a member and start sharing in the profits of Vision Credit Union?

Vision has had yet another outstanding year and now we are returning an amazing profit share to our member-owners.

Again, it’s simple. Drop in to any of our 16 branches. Transferring your deposits and investment accounts or applying for loans is quick and easy. You can become a member-owner for just $1.

What do you mean by handsome cash bonus being paid annually? Each fall, the Vision Credit Union Board of Directors declares a Profit Share to all members. This means a percentage of the total amount you have in your common share account will be given back to you in cash. In recent years, the Board has authorized a 10% annual payout to members. That’s often enough money for new appliances, a great vacation or enough money to pay off routine bills or credit cards.

Where members matter most. www.visioncu.ca

Is Vision Credit Union a full-service financial institution?

Absolutely! Your money (regardless of amount) on deposit is 100% guaranteed. We offer loans for anything you need to buy: vehicles, farm equipment, real estate, business ventures, etc. We have specialists who can provide excellent investment advice and financial products. Even U.S. deposit accounts, safety deposit box service, etc.

After all these years, why haven,t I become a member of Vision Credit Union?

You tell us. There’s never been a better time to make the switch. Nearly 24,000 of our members are a lot more excited than you right now. Hope to see you soon! How’s tomorrow sound? Become a member-owner today.

Men gather for cooking, conversation and companionship ence Hastings from CDSS (Camrose District Support Services). He runs the Men’s Shed, and I asked if any of the Men’s Shed guys would be interested in the cooking program. “They all wanted to do it. We ended up with eight men signed up,” smiled Harder. “Two of them are widows, one is going through a divorce and the rest are dealing with various types of grief in their lives.” W hile originally planned for widowers, the program has since opened up to include men experiencing any form of grief. “It has been immensely positive for us all,” added Harder. “It is an incredible experience. There are great cooking skills being learned and lots of really good conversation.” The group met once a week for seven weeks in the kitchen area below The Open Door at around 6 p.m. “We began by sitting around the table and chit chatting. We would get our

projects assigned, then we just started cooking.” The first few sessions included the basics of cooking, eventually working up to more complex meals and cooking. The men in the group were given the opportunity to select the meals, all of which included healthy, fresh and balanced choices, including a night of fish (salmon cakes and chowder with baking powder biscuits), a night for Italian dishes (pasta) and an all-in favourite night of ribs and lentils. On this, the last night, the men were scurrying around the kitchen, with the help of Eva, Judy and Jocelyn, preparing a variety of heavenly-smelling desserts. “We have cooked some fantastic meals,” remarked Harder. “Then we sit down and eat together, chit chat about our grief, signs of grief, what it is like for men to grieve and how they experience it uniquely and what have they done for support.”

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Members of the Hospice Society of Camrose Men’s Cooking Circle gathered at the Open Door kitchen to assemble some sweet treats. Pictured in front is Rick Picher, fearlessly stirring a mixture for homemade shortbread. By Lori Larsen

Many a problem has been solved around a kitchen table; many a conversation has been had. People gather there for a common purpose, to enjoy a meal and engage in conversation where one feels connected and safe. The Hospice Society of Camrose and District in partnership with Alberta Health Services and community facilitators has taken that concept and has turned it into a successful and empowering initiative for Camrose and area men who are, in some way, experiencing grief. “The genesis of this initiative (Men’s Cooking Circle) was particularly about widowed men and these prairie guys who, maybe never learned to cook,” said Hospice Society of Camrose and District grief and bereavement coordinator Bill Harder. “We offer them a chance

to come together and gain some cooking skills and, at the same time, learn nutrition from our dietician and give them a chance to talk about what it is like to be widowed.” Harder approached Eva Lynn (Dinner Diva) a year previous, about the possibility of beginning the program. “She liked the idea and was willing to be a cooking instructor,” said Harder. Along with Lynn’s business partner Judy Haselwood, the two volunteered to come on board. “Then we got hold of Jocelyn Armstrong, dietician from Alberta Health Services and her department was willing to fund her being involved as a dietician.” The goal to begin the program in the spring of this year was temporarily sidetracked after discovering there were not enough men interested. “In the fall, I spoke with Clar-

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Neil Leeson cuts butter into pieces for his take on apple crisp, during the Men’s Cooking Circle’s last session of this year. The program is designed to give Camrose and area men, who may be grieving a loss, an opportunity to come together, learn some cooking tips, cook and converse.

After sharing food and companionship, the group cleans the kitchen and departs. “When all is said and done, we have been there for about three hours and received some really good information all the way around.” To the best of his knowledge and as a result of some extensive internet research, Harder believes this is a one-of-a-kind program with only a few similar initiatives existing, including a short-term one in Ontario offered by a church, one in the United States and one in Australia as an extension of the health system. “This is a pilot project unique to Canadian hospice.” But one that Harder, along with others dealing in grief work in the community, felt was vital. “We wondered what to do about guys who are home alone and are eating macaroni every night because they don’t know enough about cooking.” Most of the men in this particular group were retired and grieving the loss of a relationship and came to the group with virtually no cooking experience. Group member Neil Leeson spoke about the program. “Since I retired, I have the time and I want to be able to do my share of the cooking with my partner. “It is also about getting together with a group that you see every week and sharing ideas and thoughts of what is going on in our lives. It is important to have that,” he said as he sliced and diced apples for an apple crisp. “I wanted to give it a try. I am part of the Men’s Shed and this is an extension of getting together and talking.” The program also included a grocery store tour, cooking instructions and tips and nutritional information supplied by Armstrong. Harder indicated an intention to continue the program next year in hopes of reaching even more men who may be bereaving loss in their lives. For more information on the Men’s Cooking Circle or grief or bereavement, contact Bill Harder at bill@ insidewise.com.

ORIGINAL ROCKERS

Dan Olofson, left, and Carmen Mason are two of the longtime members of the Xtatix that will be playing at the Bailey Theatre on New Year’s Eve. Carmen was one of the first rock and roll singers in Alberta.

Camrose will celebrate the end of Canada 150 with a party and dance at the Bailey Theatre on Dec. 31 beginning at 8 p.m. Launching the evening will be the first rock and roll band formed in Camrose, the Xtatix. Legendary frontmen Carmen Mason and Dan Olofson have been part of the band for many years. “Our first act was when I was in Grade 12, back in 1959 in Bashaw,” said Carmen. “Until that point in time, rock and roll was just coming in. Before that, all of the dances included fiddles and accordions. It was old-time music.” When Chuck Barry, Buddy Holly, The Ventures and Elvis Presley became popular, it set the tone for the new wave of music. “When Carmen started the band, there were probably only three other rock bands in Alberta,” added Dan. “We were the only band in town playing that kind of music. We packed every hall that we played in. The young people just kept coming and it was a great time,” recalled Carmen. “We travelled as far as Wainwright, Stettler, Bashaw, Coronation and in all of the local halls. We played steady, just about every weekend. I’ve been playing in bands off and on since then.” Currently, both Carmen and Dan are on the Bailey Theatre board of directors. They were approached to play at the New Year’s Eve dance as a fundraiser for the historic facility. “We decided to play together again to draw a big crowd for the Bailey and celebrate the New Year.” The Xtatix were popular as they learned the top tunes of each year. “We have kept a lot of the same music because that is what the people seem to want. ‘Johnny B. Good’ and ‘That Will Be The Day’ are songs that people still love to this day. Over the years, we would learn newer progressive songs so we would keep a new flavour to the music all of the time,” Carmen explained. The Beatles changed the way they played music. “A lot of the old rock and roll songs were three-chord stuff and pretty easy to play. When the Beatles came, they used the entire neck (of the guitar) with four or five chords,” recalled Carmen. “We didn’t start playing them right away, but soon found out that we had to. We had to learn more harmonies and more guitar work, but it turned out well for us.” Continued on page 12

Carmen was the voice of the band. “I did most of the singing back then. Later when Jan Nowakowski joined us, he took over some of the singing. Now he has gone back to Godfrey Blaque. Now when we have a full band, I’ll get some help with vocals. It’s not like riding a bicycle, you can’t just go back, you have to practice,” he laughed. “I’ve enjoyed it so much. If you would have told me back when I was 16 or 17 years old that I would be still playing today, I would have thought you were crazy.” The band, although not all of the original members, is now in its 58th year of entertaining people. “I told Danny that if we play the New Year’s Eve festival, we will have to start early because people our age go to bed early now,” he joked. “We are going to start early at 8 p.m. and then a band will follow us to take everyone to midnight.” Carmen and Dan will be part of Xtatix which features other band members. “Charlie McCleary, the principal of Charlie Killam School (high school at that time), would play with us and we kept learning from him. I remember one time we had an assembly on Friday afternoon and we got up on stage and the students went absolutely crazy in the gym and Charlie shut us down. He said we can’t do this anymore. Dennis Gustavson and I started the band. He was a great guitar player, so I learned a lot from him. Larry Roth played with us, but then he left town. We heard Danny could play, so we added him even though he was only in Grade 10. We went though various drummers, about eight or nine over that period.” He said the ‘50s and ‘60s was the greatest time for music. “I’m glad I was born when I was because it was the best time in music history. Everything changed so much and we had to keep up and it pushed us to be better. It was a great time.” New members of the Xtatix will be Aaron Olaf-

WHO can

Short term rentals By Lori Larsen

In a report for information to council on short term rentals in Camrose, City of Camrose planning and development director Aaron Leckie explained the premise behind short term rentals and their present existence in Camrose. “Short Term Rentals essentially allow your residential house or unit to act as a short term hotel,” explained Leckie. “Someone is able to book it online through either you or one of the online services.” Short term rentals (STR) businesses, such as Airbnb, Flipkey and Tripping.com, make it possible for people to book short-term accommodations in private residences around the world using their websites. “I am certain we are not at the critical point now where there are numerous complaints from residents about short term rentals in Camrose,” remarked Leckie adding that administration has looked at some of the challenges and regulatory issues faced by other communities which may, at some point in the future, affect Camrose. “These (STR) are becoming issues in much larger, major centres in Canada. Toronto and Vancouver now have regulations in place.” Information presented in the report indicated that the presence of STR in residential neighbourhoods may cause some adverse impact to surrounding neighbours as a result of increased traffic, increased parking demand and noise. “In Camrose last year, when I looked online, we had one in operation in the Augustana neighbourhood. “We are now up to four this year, one in the Augustana area, two in West Park and one in Victoria Park.” While Leckie did say the presence of STR is growing, he did not feel it was at a critical juncture and it wouldn’t make sense to bring in regulation at this time. “This is a different use,” he continued. “A use that is not currently regulated by our Land Use Bylaw (LUB).” He did suggest that with future growth projections, Camrose is likely to see 30 to 40 STR in the next five years. “Then it will be time to look at some regulations.” Leckie informed council the report was generated as a result of a complaint from a resident. Mayor Norm Mayer responded, “I would rather we be proactive rather than waiting until problems arise.” Councillor Agnes Hoveland inquired as to the nature of the complaint. Leckie indicated that the complaint came from a resident of a semi-detached dwelling concerned about

not having permanent neighbours. “It was not a complaint about noise or garbage. Their (complainant’s) expectation was when they purchased that unit, they would have a neighbour next door and that they may be able to be friends with.” Hoveland further inquired, “But there is nothing to date that has been in violation that has required police or anything like that.” Leckie responded “Not that we are aware of. Technically, the entire use is in violation of our Land Use Bylaw. It is not listed as something we would consider. The closest would be a bed and breakfast, but that again is a separate type of use.” Councillor Greg Wood commented, “If it is not allowed in the LUB, are we ignoring the phone call or are we contacting them and saying we are allowing something that is technically not allowed.” Leckie expounded, “Although it is not listed as something in our LUB, the enforcement issues are similar to the problems we had trying to enforce illegal boarding houses proving that the person doesn’t live there or that it isn’t just a friend staying there for the weekend. “It gets a little sticky trying to do that in municipalities until they reach some sort of benchmark. In Saskatoon, for example, they have over 400 units now, so they reached their benchmark to where they are going to start regulating it. Up until that point, they just ignored it because it is too complex of an issue to try to regulate, until it becomes what they identified as a problem in the community.” Wood said, “I think it would be a good idea to come up with a benchmark as to when we would consider it to be a big issue. We have hotels paying big property taxes and these guys (STR) are competing against them and that’s not fair either.” Councillor Max Lindstrand inquired as to how Leckie discovered the four STR presently operating in Camrose. “I went through the formal short term rental sites, but there are a bunch of informal sites as well, including one set up in Camrose,” said Leckie Councillor Hoveland suggested she would rather the City be proactive on this matter by putting in some regulations. City of Camrose manager Malcolm Boyd suggested the matter be added to the next Municipal Planning Advisory Committee meeting for further discussion.

Council approves increase to library 2018 budget

Parents/guardians and current Grade 5 students are invited to an information meeting

Wednesday, November 29 at 6 p.m. École Charlie Killam School Library For further information please contact Todd Sikorski, Vice Principal, ÉCKS 780-672-7785 or tsikorski@brsd.ab.ca

The Camrose Public Library’s 2018 budget will receive an increase of $30,164 as a result of an unanimous vote by City of Camrose council during the regular council meeting on Nov. 20. Library director Deb Cryderman presented council with a draft proposal of the library budget, requesting a total of $624,654 for 2018 versus the Dec. 5, 2016 approved $610,859 for 2018. Cryderman indicated if council choose to also have the library remain open on Sundays, the requested increased amount would be $641,022 for 2018. “After recalculating things such as our grid movements, bringing up some of our staff’s minimum wages and the fact that there has been a recently legislated increase in holiday pay for staff serving one to two years, this is the new amount that we have come up with,” explained Cryderman. Cryderman added that there has been a vast increase in the amount of people visiting the library over the last few years. “Since 2011, we have had a 1,316 per cent increase in our programming attendance. It is a social place – a place for people to be together.” City of Camrose manager Malcolm Boyd asked, “If the City were not to approve the existing budget, what would that mean to your operation?” Cryderman’s response indicated, “The library would experience cuts and closures, $42,000 in cuts to our operating budget would be equal to approximately one and a half days, per week, that we would have to close.” The increase to the 2018 library operating budget will be funded from the general operating reserve.

Police warn residents to be careful about scams and fraud Nov. 24

A female contacted Camrose Police Service after she received a phone call from a male who claimed he was a Canada Post employee and needed her address to drop

off a package. The female wisely did not provide her address recognizing that it was a scam. Nov. 23

A female advised police that she had purchased two

fraudulent tickets on Facebook Buy and Sell from a female who is believed to live in Hinton. A female reported that her wallet was missing and

a fraudulent purchase was made on her credit card. A loss prevention officer at a west end business reported that a male had just fled their store with stolen merchandise. Police attended

the area and located the suspect who had hidden the stolen property in the snow. The 57-year-old male who is well known to police was arrested and charged with theft and possession of stolen property.

If you are running out of time for holiday baking, let the Camrose Heritage Railway Museum and Park help you. Join them for one of their major fundraisers, the annual Cookie Walk, to be held on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 1 until 4:30 p.m. “We want to reach out to the community and give them the opportunity to buy Christmas goodies,” said Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park managing director Norm Prestage. “There will be gluten-free baked goods and regular baked goods. “A lot of people do not bake any more, so this is a great opportunity to get homemade Christmas baking for entertaining or to simply enjoy yourself,” added Prestage. “We are planning on having about 80 dozen cookies,” said Prestage. “And there will also be homemade loaves, pepper jellies and carrot pudding, both gluten free and regular.” The White Elephant Gift Shop will be open so visitors can purchase homemade Christmas decorations or gently used items for those special people on your gift list.

Building on a culture of inclusion

Before

By Lori Larsen

A great coach can make all the difference in whether a child enjoys and grows or simply goes, and Shane Gau, head coach for the Camrose Sea Serpents Swim Club, epitomizes a great coach. With 26 years under his belt as head coach, Shane has made a huge difference in a ream of young swimmers’ lives. “I consider myself fortunate to have the opportunity to work in a great organization,” noted Shane. “I have been with some great people over the years and I have learned from them. That has made a big difference in my life.” Born and raised in Camrose, Shane has been in and around the pool since about the age of six. “I remember my mom taking us to lessons in the morning (at the then outdoor pool).” Shane began with the swim club in 1980, eventually becoming the assistant coach under his brother, who was the head coach at the time. Shane took over as head coach in 1991 making this year his 26th year at that position. “People have said they thought this was my last year,” grinned Shane. “But I will know when the time has come. Right now, I am still really enjoying what I am doing. I am treated well in the position and I feel like I am still making a difference.” Which is the case by all accounts from swim club members, parents, members of the board and residents within the community. Anticipating there will come a day when he passes the whistle on, Shane said, with conviction, that the club does a great job in providing opportunities for swimmers to mentor and become volunteer, junior and assistant coaches. “A big part of coaching is mentoring. I want to be able to step away knowing I have mentored the other coaches enough that our club stays strong forever.” Shane also noted that presently all the swim club coaches are teachers or on the way to becoming teachers, which may explain the instinctive nature of the coaches to ensure all swimmers feel included and valued. This is something Shane lives by, on the pool deck, in the hockey arena (where he has also coached for approximately 14 years) and in the classroom, as a teacher and vice principal for a combined 24 years. “Anyone who has ever coached does it to be able to connect with children and establish those deep relationships. They (students or athletes) know you are committed to them.

Plan Now For Their Future Needs Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose Sea Serpents Swim Club head coach Shane Gau has been positively influencing the lives of young swimmers for 26 years.

“In the end, it is about kids staying in shape, liking and belonging to something and feeling a sense of accomplishment. Those are things that make a difference. If all of those things align, that is when we start seeing success in the pool and in the classroom.” And the club has seen its share of success over the years with swimmers competing at regional, provincial and national levels. “For me personally, regionals is always a great time of year because everyone can go to regionals from our club. You don’t need to qualify for regionals and that is typically when our swimmers peak.” In speaking further on the success of the swimmers and club, Shane couldn’t say enough about the important role dedicated parents, including his own when he was young and involved in sports, play in the success of their children. “It is great when a child does well, but it is the parents who are getting them to the pool or the rink – parents who are making sure they are eating healthy.” Shane proudly said that anyone is welcome to join the swim club and there are no qualifications to pass. “We try to make things fun so kids want to come back, but they also want to know that they are making a difference for themselves. So we get them to set goals for themselves and teach them that it is good to be a great athlete, but it is even more important to be a great person. “At a young level, we

teach swimmers to treat each other with respect, always show great sportsmanship, eat healthy and do all these things that make elite swimmers elite.” The ultimate goal and greatest satisfaction for Shane, and the club, is when others comment that the Sea Serpents have the best sportsmanship. “It is important in every sport and I think it is often forgotten and overshadowed by personal success which diminishes over the years. Rarely people remember the moments, but they do remember what kind of a person you were.” With a degree of excitement and a profusion of gratitude, Shane spoke about the proposed renovations to the Aquatic Centre and the willingness of the City, council and Aquatic Centre staff to include the club on the design and process. “We needed to expand to be able to train here and host meets at our pool and take that sense of pride in our community.” Like every good coach and teacher, Shane shies away from taking all the credit and thanked the executive, past and present, for the continual support. He also acknowledged the support of his parents, children and wife Christine. “Any coach would say when you are coaching and putting in that time, someone has to be picking up the pieces on the other end. I don’t tell Christine enough how much I appreciate her. She’s my difference maker.”

Tips for handling holiday stress this season By Pat Olafson, Family Violence Action Society

Despite being portrayed as a time for joyous family celebrations, the holidays can be a time of stress and loneliness for those with strained or difficult relationships with family members. In families that are already complicated with conflict and/or tension, the holidays can provide additional sources of conflict in various ways; at whose home should the celebrations be held and on which day, which celebration should one attend if there are conflicting dates, whether or not to exchange gifts and with whom, how much money to spend on gifts, who to invite/exclude due to past blow-ups, the list goes on! On the other hand, some people have such difficult relationships with family that, either by their own choice or that of the other party, they will be isolated from those family members during the holidays. Here are some tips for coping with some common holiday stresses. Family conflict—feeling stressed about family get-togethers over Christmas? Here are some tips that may help: have reasonable expectations with-

out getting your hopes up. Focus on getting through without a blow-up; holiday gatherings are not the time to resolve long-standing family issues. Remember that you have the capacity to control your response. Avoid allowing others to influence how you feel or respond; rally your supports by having friends/ family you can debrief with after the event, in case you need to vent, cry, or receive validation. The further removed from the conflict, the more objective they can be; understand and accept that blended families are now the norm. Time is a valuable commodity to everyone. No one can be in two places at once, so be flexible by considering alternative days and activities; avoid money stressors by setting a budget and setting boundaries with family regarding gift-giving. Consider drawing names or other options to ensure that you are doing only what you and your family can afford. If getting together with family is not an option, and loneliness is your primary concern, here are some suggestions that may make it easier to cope: choosing not to be with family at Christmas does not have to be an act of anger; sometimes

it’s healthier and more loving to let everyone have their own space; volunteer. Serve at a soup kitchen, visit residents in a seniors’ community…doing for others nurtures your soul. Remember that friends are family that you’ve chosen; suggest a holiday meal or get-together with a close friend or group of friends. Accept invitations if someone invites you to join a holiday celebration, don’t

assume they’re “just being polite.” Choose to spend the day doing something enjoyable. Put together a jigsaw puzzle, watch a movie, or treat yourself to a special meal, snack, or dessert. Practice gratitude. Take time to appreciate the good in your life, be it good health, a roof over your head, or food in the fridge. It is hard to feel sorry for ourselves and thankful at the same time!

with smaller contributions over time, rather than a requirement to donate a lump-sum on a single occasion. She also pointed out that this feature enabled her to teach her children the concept of philanthropy, by allowing them to make their own periodic contributions to the Samm Family Fund.

David noted that, through flow-through and endowment funds, the Foundation is able to address a broad spectrum of needs including the arts, health, recreation and education from both an immediate and long-term perspective. The Battle River Community Foundation can help you fulfill your philanthropic dream. Big or small, we can help you make it a reality, in our own back yard. The philanthropic spirit resides in everyone, and together, we can help it flourish, right here at home. Lights to Remember event By Lori Larsen

Often the Christmas season can be a time of reflection on the past year, times gone by and, in some instances, on loved ones lost. Join the Hospice Society of Camrose and District in sponsoring a light in memory of a friend or loved one on the Lights to Remember tree located at the Bill Fowler Centre. On Dec. 14 from 7 until 8:30 p.m., a lighting ceremony of the tree will take place at the Bill

Fowler Centre to celebrate the lives of those who have passed away but remain in spirit. “In my work with those who are dying, I have sometimes heard it said, ‘I don’t want to be forgotten,’” said Hospice Society of Camrose and District grief and bereavement coordinator Bill Harder. “Among the fears that may surface in our last days, fading into anonymity with our loved ones is sometimes voiced. “Lights to Remember is an opportunity to reflect

on our relationships with those who have died. It is literally a time to remember, to call to mind those who have passed out of life in this last year, and yet remain so present in our hearts and minds.” Residents are encouraged to come and share in the fellowship of others and take an opportunity during the busy holiday season to remember those who have passed away. Refreshments will follow the lighting ceremony.

CCHS students set to unveil West Side Story By Murray Green

The talented Musical Theatre 15 course students at the Camrose Composite High School have been working hard to bring their version of the famous musical West Side Story to life at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre for three nights. “I like to have musicals that the high school students would appreciate. The story is something they can relate to. It is a timeless theme that is still relevant today,” said the director of the musical, teacher Stephen Cole. “It features interactions of two groups of people who have conflicts. One represents the immigrants and the other people who have lived there and are worried about new people moving in and it leads to fighting between them.” Shows will be held on Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 with all three performances beginning at 7 p.m. Two matinees will be held for students only. “We have 25 cast members, which is a great number. We had the Grade 9 students join us this year and a lot of them have had some drama experience before, so they can become more involved here,” explained Mr. Cole. “The students are from Musical Theatre 15, so it is a credit course.” Music director will be CCHS band teacher Graham Green. “The band students have been rehearsing for a couple of months now. It is a challenging score by Leonard Bernstein. If you wanted to stretch the abilities of high school students, this would be the music to do it. They have come a long way in a short amount of time. I’m looking forward to hearing what this sounds like when everything comes together,” he said. West Side Story is a musical adapted from the book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and conception and choreography

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Camrose Composite High School students sing West Side Story’s I Feel Pretty during rehearsal with characters Francisca (Bhey Pastolero), Maria (Amber Bonter) and Rosalia (Emma-Leigh Simonot) sharing a scene. by Jerome Robbins. It was inspired by William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. The acting and music will blend after many hours of practice. “The timing is critical. So much of the music depends on the dialogue and the dialogue depends on the music. That has to come though in practice, long before it ever hits the stage,” said Cole.

“We have 20 band members. These are students who are practising outside of classroom time in additional to their regular studies. It is something they have really dug into,” added Green, who was asked to lead the music. “I immediately was excited and then I thought, ‘Are you crazy?’ West Side Story is one of the cornerstones of Broadway music and to

play that is something you can’t turn down.” The story is set in the upper west side neighborhood in New York City in the mid 1950s, an ethnic, blue-collar neighborhood. (In the early 1960s, much of the neighborhood was cleared in an urban renewal project for the Lincoln Center, which changed the neighborhood’s character.) The musical explores

the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The members of the Sharks, from Puerto Rico, are taunted by the Jets, a white gang. The young protagonist, Tony, a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang’s leader, Riff, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. “The drama students are really looking forward to coming together with music students and practising. Some of my students are band students too, so they appreciate how hard this is for them,” said Cole. “It is going to be great to have the students singing along with the live music.” The dark theme, sophisticated music, extended dance scenes and focus on social problems marked a turning point in American musical theatre. Bernstein’s score for the musical includes “I Feel Pretty” and “Cool.” The original 1957 Broadway production, marked Sondheim’s Broadway debut. It ran for 732 performances before going on tour. The production was nominated for six Tony Awards including Best Musical in 1957, but the award went to Meredith Willson’s The Music Man. “The students are excited to be in the Lougheed Centre because we have more room to work with. The work ethic steps up when they understand this is going on the big stage. The students want to show the community what they can do,” Cole added. “The students are thrilled and they can’t wait to get in there. The learning curve is off the charts,” said Green. Several other teachers and staff members are volunteering time with the CCHS production as well. Drama students will be having a new show in January. Music students will be in a Christmas concert on Dec. 4 at CCHS.

Volunteers sought for New Year’s Eve family party By Murray Green

Camrose will be hosting a Light Up The Night New Year’s Eve party to celebrate the end of Canada’s 150 year as a nation. The Light Up The Night finale event will be held at the Camrose Recreation Centre (Aquatic Centre, EnCana Arena and Rudy Swanson Park area) from 5 to 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 31. Activities will include a community dance and laser light show, free illuminated skating and

swimming, a path of lights, animated light sculptures, a bonfire and free hot chocolate. “We want everyone to join the celebration. We also need volunteers to help us make this celebration a success,” said Jane Cherry-Lemire, a member of the local Canada 150 committee. “We thought this would be a good way for the community to get together and celebrate. We have a Much Music Dance Company coming

in to provide music, videos and lights while people skate or dance. This event is for all ages, not just teens.” A countdown to the New Year will be done at 9 p.m. instead of midnight, so children will be able to take part. “The concession will be open. We are hoping that people will come down for supper and stay for the evening,” said Jane. “We wanted to finish the event at 9:30 p.m. so people can still attend

the Bailey Theatre event or other events.” People can view the time capsule and this is the last opportunity to submit something to be enclosed in the capsule that will be opened 50 years from now on Canada’s 200th birthday. “We need volunteers leading up to the event, as well as on the evening. I’m looking for people to help put this light display together. On the night of the event, we want a lot of directional signs and

we need people to help put those up. We are going to have eight fairy mascots and we need people to fill those roles. They will greet people and pass out glow ropes,” said Jane. “We need people at barricades and people to help us to take down things after the event. If anyone has logs or pallets for burning, they can contact us.” For more information on the event or to volunteer, call Jane at 780672-9949.

Ski Club extends lesson registration By Lori Larsen

Want a wonderful way to enjoy the crisp air and glistening snow of winter? Why not try some cross country ski lessons with the Camrose Ski Club? The adult learn to ski and adult training program are still looking for skiers. Registration deadline for lessons has been extended to Nov. 30.

There is equipment available for rent to youth. It’s a great way to get children out to try something new without the immediate cost of equipment. The Ski Club offers a host of groomed trails in Camrose and the golf course is also available for skiing. The ski club would, however, like to remind residents not to walk on

the groomed ski trails. A great deal of work goes into grooming the trails and foot traffic can damage them, which can pose a risk to skiers. Walking on the ski trails can also be dangerous, should a collision between a skier and a pedestrian occur. For more information visit the Camrose Ski Club website at www.camroseskiclub.com.

Take a virtual dementia tour By Chantal Beesley, The Bethany Group

Catalonia: To be or not?

Shauna Wilton, Political Studies Augustana Campus, University of Alberta

Sitting in a café in Barcelona, one block from the Plaça de Catalunya where many of the demonstrations for Catalan independence have been held, I notice that someone has painted a rude slogan about the Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy. There are Catalan flags outside some apartments and businesses, and a few Spanish flags too. The other day a group of a hundred or so people marched down the street in front of my hotel protesting the arrest warrants that have been issued for many members of the Catalan

government. Currently, the situation in Barcelona is peaceful: there is a lull in the nationalist activities and people are waiting to see what the abolishment of Catalonia’s self-government by the Spanish government will mean, and how the Catalan leader, Charles Puigdemont, will respond. The central issue is whether the Catalonia has a right to secede from Spain. The Spanish Constitution’s preamble states that it is based “on the indissoluble unity of the Spanish Nation, the common and indivisible homeland of all Spaniards; it recognizes and guarantees the right to self-government of the nationalities and regions of which it is composed and the solidarity among them all.” This recognition of the right to selfgovernment is effectively outweighed by the “indivisibility” of the Spanish state. The Oct. 1, referendum on independence was illegal simply because there is no legal constitutional way to divide Spain and secede. This leaves the Catalan nationalists no option other than to break the law if they are to achieve their goals. Under international law, peoples have the right to selfdetermination. Are the people of Catalan a distinct “nation”? Many Catalonians believe they are distinct from Spain, with a different language, history and culture. Many still remember the oppression of Catalans under the Franco dictatorship of the mid-twentieth century and the memory of the oppression is kept alive in many ways. When I visited the fortress on Montjuïc, the exhibit detailed the long history of the city, its people, and their oppression. On one wall there was a quote from General Espartero, following his bombardment of the workers in response their protests in the 1830s, stating that “Barcelona should be bombed every 50 years.” Another wall showed a film about the ill treatment of the Catalans during the civil war. The social construction of the Catalan nation is alive and ongoing. Whether or not the Catalan nation is somehow “real” and not “socially constructed” doesn’t matter. Ultimately, belonging to a nation is subjective and a nation exists because people believe it does. This brings us back to the question of whether that nation should have the right to form its own state. The Spanish government says no. They are sticking to the line that the referendum was illegal and that the Catalan leaders broke the law by having it. Most of the other governments of the world, unsurprisingly, support the Spanish government and its desire for unity. Although the borders of most European countries have changed many times over the centuries, the borders established following the Second World War have come to be seen as permanent and unalterable, largely due to the influence of the European Union and the United Nations and the desire to avoid conflict. The recognition of Catalonia as a new independent state by other governments would threaten this stability and potentially lead to the further fragmentation of Europe. However, taking away the rights of the province of Catalonia, imprisoning the leaders of the government, and imposing direct rule from Madrid are highly unlikely to abate the popular desire of many for more power and independence for Catalonia. In fact, as the nationalists claim, the central government is further colonizing and oppressing the popular and democratic will of the people here. Unfortunately, both the Spanish and Catalan governments are entrenched in their positions and it is difficult to see a way forward. Spain has called for new Catalan elections for December. It will be interesting to see how the support for the “yes” and “no” coalitions of parties has been impacted by recent events. As we saw in Scotland and Quebec, when faced with the option of leaving, both groups ultimately, if narrowly, chose to stay.

Dementia is a word that has become more prominent over the years. It is the most common type of neurodegenerative disorder that affects around 564,000 Canadians, with 25,000 new cases diagnosed every year (Alzheimer’s Society of Canada). When people think of dementia, they usually think of Alzheimer’s, however, dementia is a general term for a range of symptoms associated with the decline in mental function. A Statistics Canada study found that in care facilities, residents over 80 with dementia accounted for 56 per cent of that segment of the population and 42 per cent of those aged 65 to 79. In private households, around five per cent of those 80 or older had dementia. While dementia does affect those younger, it becomes more common at older ages. While these numbers reflect the people diagnosed with dementia, there are many more affected by it. This is especially true where individuals with dementia reside at home. Around 85 per cent of those individuals rely on their family, friends or neighbours for assistance. Of that number, 46 per cent of the caregivers are a spouse and 44 per cent are children. Dealing with dementia means dealing with a variety of impairments to memory, communication and language, the ability to focus or pay attention, reasoning and judgement, visual perception, emotional control, and social behavior. It is sometimes difficult for family members, friends and caregivers to understand why a loved one acts the way they do. Created by Second

Bethany Group LPN Godwin Kunjumon performs one of the tasks in the Virtual Dementia Tour.

Wind, the Virtual Dementia Tour is an interactive tour where participants are asked to perform several tasks. The tours are around 15 minutes and taken alone. Afterwards, participants gather to discuss their experience and learn more about living with dementia. The tour is unique in that it isn’t about teaching clinical skills but instead focuses on sensitivity training. The tour also addresses many of the impairments those with dementia suffer, like diminished visual perception, communication, and the ability to focus or pay attention. Earlier this year, The Bethany Group held its first tour open to community members, which proved just as popular and successful. As one participant of the community tour commented, “It will really help me understand what my father, who is almost 83-years-old with hearing problems and has withdrawn from social

functions, is going through– I will try to be there for him with kindness.” On Dec. 8, the Virtual Dementia Tour will once again be offered to the community, but will be specifically for youth. These sessions will provide youth with an opportunity to learn more about what living with dementia is like, many of whom have grandparents with the diagnosis. “People struggling with dementia need compassion and understanding. Based on current statistics, it seems inevitable that today’s youth are likely, at some point, to live with a family member who struggles with this disease. What we hope to achieve with this program is to give youth confidence that they can help and make a very real difference.” To register your teen/ pre-teen in a tour, or to learn more contact Outreach Education at 780-679-2012 or Educ.Cam@bethanygrp.ca.

Winter Car Care guide

Winter is here! It’s time to get your vehicles ready!

Cruising in a classic Chevy daily driver By Murray Green

Larry Storms prefers to drive an older car. He believes in the fact that they don’t build them like they used to. “I drive a 1963 Chevrolet Bel Air four door because I thought it was a nice car. I’ve had it for six years and I bought it from a very good friend who bought it from his great uncle’s estate,” explained Larry. “It was bought in Vegreville new, he only used it to drive back and forth to church. It was his Sunday driver.” A lot of the vehicle was still in the new car stage. “The seats still had the plastic on it and the door handles when I got it. Everything is original on the car. Recently, I updated the brakes to four-wheel disk brakes. That is about all that I have done to it. Other than that, it is all original,” he said proudly. In 1963, the full size Chevrolet received little more than a facelift. Overall length increased to 210.4 in (5,340 mm). Replacing the older 235 cubic-inch six-cylinder engine as standard equipment was a new 230 cubicinch six-cylinder of more modern design with a 140-horsepower rating that was based on the 194 cubicinch six introduced on the compact Chevy II Nova the previous year. The Bel Air continued to be Chevrolet’s middle range, but it now consisted of only two car models- the two-door sedan and the four-door sedan six and nine-passenger Bel Air station wagons were again offered. He couldn’t resist the fact it could be his family car. “I like the fact that my entire family fits into the car and we can enjoy it together on long trips. It doesn’t break the bank with an inline 230 six cylinder motor,” Larry suggested. “It floats down the highway nice. Their family was like my family, so it is like an extension. I want to keep the car on the road and going. The car

FAMILY CAR

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Larry Storms stands by his classic daily driver that he uses as a regular family vehicle. The 1963 Chevrolet Bel Air has stood the test of time as a dependable car.

is a lot simpler than the modern vehicles. You get in the car and drive down the road. I have AM radio and one speaker. I don’t have to worry about the electronics that could go wrong. It is relaxing and enjoyable driving. It takes you back in time to an era when things were simple. I wish it was still like that today.” He takes the car anywhere he wants to go. “It is about getting out and enjoying it. It could be raining going down Highway 2 and people give me the thumbs up.” From 1954 through 1969, GM Canada produced a unique Bel Airbased Pontiac marketed as the Laurentian. While body panels resembled contemporary United States Pontiacs, the Canadian Pontiac Laurentian had the chassis, power train, wheelbase, even the interior (except for the instrument panel), of the Chevrolet Bel Air.

Even though Larry uses his car as a daily driver, he still loves going to car shows. “Going to car shows is very much part of my roots from being in the hot rod industry and growing up around vehicles. It’s different not having something super shiny or super fast, but it’s not always about how shiny or fast it is, it is about the enjoyment you get out of it and the company that it brings you around.” Sometimes family comes first. “I’ve always had a soft spot for a 1963. I wanted a two-door Impala, but being a family man, this car made more sense. It was also about the way the car came available to me that made it more appealing to me as well. It has always been a passion to have a car like this.” Eventually he will fix a little rust developing on the fenders. “I’ve been trying to find original fenders that are

the same colour, but I’m having a hard time. I don’t want to take away from the originality of the car. I would like a little more power, but I just might hot

rod it a little. What you did back then was worked with what you had and I plan to do the same,” said Larry.

Officers remind motorists to buckle By Murray Green

It’s been 30 years since mandatory seatbelt laws have been in effect in Alberta. Yet, there remains a small percentage of drivers and passengers who are inconsistent in their use of seatbelts, or choose not to use them altogether, putting themselves and others at risk. The RCMP remind motorists that no matter how short the drive, it’s important to make sure everyone is wearing their seatbelt. “The proper use of seatbelts and child safety seats is the single most effective way to reduce injury and death in a motor vehicle collision,” said Supt. Gary Graham, officer in charge, Alberta Integrated Traffic Services. “Research shows that seatbelts can reduce fatal and serious injury by as much as 45 to 65 per cent. The best way to protect yourself, your family and your passengers is by ensuring everyone buckles up.” According to Alberta Transportation, in 2015, individuals wearing a restraint during a collision had a lower injury rate of 6.8 per cent, compared to those who did not use restraints, 22.4 per cent. Not only does the likelihood of sustaining an injury decrease with the use of restraints, but so does the severity of the injury. Unbelted occupants can be thrown around the compartment, striking other passengers, increasing the risk of serious or fatal injury to other passengers. In Alberta, the law requires that occupants must use all available seatbelts. The driver is responsible to ensure that all passengers under the age of 16 are properly secured using either a seatbelt or child safety seat. All children under the age of six and whose weight does not exceed 18 kg (40 lbs) must be properly restrained in a child safety seat appropriate for their age and weight. Safety experts and best practices recommend that children who have outgrown their child safety seat, use a booster seat until they reach the maximum weight or height limit of that seat, as stated by the manufacturer. From January to October 2017, Integrated Traffic Units issued 12,720 tickets to drivers and passengers in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions for seatbelt and occupant restraint violations.

Holiday Train collects food for Camrose area By Murray Green

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train program is hitting the rails for the 18th year to raise money, food and awareness for local food banks and hunger issues. This marks the second time the Holiday Train will be rolling into Camrose. The train arrives on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 1:35 p.m. There will be a concert featuring Colin James and Emma-Lee, and the Holiday Train band will perform 15 minutes later. The Holiday Train will stop near the Moose Family Centre (52 Avenue and 50 Street). Food and cash collected at the local trucks will go directly to the Camrose Neighbor Aid Center Food Bank. Hot dogs will be available at the event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and any cash donations received from the barbecue will also be donated to the food bank, courtesy of OPT Waste Management and Moose Family Centre. From the prairies of Saskatchewan to the stages of the world, sharing his talent with some of the greatest and most influential musicians of all time, Colin James has quietly and steadily established himself as one of Canada’s greatest musicians. “Looking forward to being on the historic Holiday train again playing shows across this beautiful country. See you there,” said James.

Safe Driving Week reminds motorists to prepare for winter By Murray Green

Winter brings the usual chores of shovelling the driveway, scraping ice off the windshield and bundling up before leaving the house. It is also time to make sure your vehicle is ready for the season. National Safe Driving Week (Dec. 1 to 7) and the Canada Safety Council wants to remind Canadians to winter-proof their vehicles to make any driving they may do become easier, safer and more reliable. One of the most beneficial preventative measures you can take is to install winter tires on your car. Get four tires that are suitable for your vehicle, paying special attention to the mountain/ snowflake symbol on the side to indicate that they conform to winter tire standards. Don’t wait for a huge snowfall to make the change. Winter tires should be installed when the ambient temperature drops below 7 C. This is when the rubber in all-season tires hardens and starts losing the grip it offers. According to the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada’s Winter Tire Report, only half of Canadian motorists (not counting Quebec, where winter tire use is mandatory according to provincial law) use winter tires, with 63 per cent of people surveyed incorrectly believing that allseason tires offer adequate braking power and traction for Canadian winters. In addition to the instal-

lation of winter tires, basic maintenance of your vehicle is also of critical importance before the winter months are in full swing. Ensure you have a fully-charged battery. In cold weather, a depleted battery might not be enough to start your vehicle. Have your battery tested before cold weather hits and be proactive in changing it for a new one before the old battery fails. Know you’ll be able to stop safely. Winter tires are an important part of gaining traction when stopping, but you should also check that your brakes are working well. If they are squeaking, creaking, feel odd or seem to pull, get them serviced. Windshield wipers and washer fluid should be working right. Replace any windshield wipers that are streaky, as any accumulation of snow or ice could make visibility much poorer. Also, fill up on winter windshield washer fluid (-35 or -40 C) and keep a second jug in your vehicle at all times in case of emergency. Driving in the winter always poses a new set of challenges to even the most experienced of drivers. Ensure that you’re well prepared to face the elements, leave yourself plenty of time and space to get stopped if necessary and, if possible, avoid driving in poor visibility bad weather conditions entirely.

Rural Alberta is key to the economy By Bruce Hinkley, MLA Wetaskiwin-Camrose

Our government believes rural Alberta is key to the economy of the province and we have invested heavily in rural Alberta. Here are some of those investments as made by various ministries. Advanced Education has invested $21 million for the new Northern Lakes College campus in High Prairie; supported state of the art Dairy Learning Centre at Lakeland College in Vermilion; provided $3.3 million for mental health services at colleges and universities across the province; froze tuition rates to make post-secondary education more affordable; and moved funding to the University of Calgary’s veterinary medicine program. The Health Ministry is building a new hospital in High Prairie; a new Urgent Care centre in Sylvan Lake; a new hospital in Edson; a new dialysis facility in Lac La Biche; new satellite dialysis facilities in Hinton and Whitecourt; and announced $20 million to install lifts on ambulance vehicles to reduce injuries to paramedics. Energy continues its ongoing efforts to build a pipeline to tidewater; a new royalty to encourage new drilling; clean up abandoned oil and gas facilities that will protect the environment and landowners; and put a cap on power prices at 6.8 cents. Transportation and Infrastucture reinstated the Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program, investing $37 million in 50 communities for 87 municipal roads and bridges; invested $474 million in water and wastewater grants for Water For Life program in rural Alberta over four years; under the water and wastewater program, communities under 45,000 and municipalities with a population under 1,000 pay only 25 per cent of the program, the rest is paid by the provincial government; accessed $192 million of federal funding for transportation projects; committed $25 million a year to connect water to First Nations communities; invested $41 million in water and wastewater pipeline doubling from Sylvan Lake to Red Deer; invested $158 million on the new Peace River Bridge to keep industry moving; and invested $5 billion in provincial highway networks. Agriculture and Forestry supported farmers hit by bovine TB with $16 million to ensure the industry was able to regain its footing; expanded FireSmart program to ensure towns and cities can keep their communities safe from fire; expanded the brewers grant program, which has been so successful that local brewers have increased from 21 to 68; and $10 million in grants through on-farm energy programs to ensure farms become more energy efficient. Culture and Tourism announced $40 million for the new Reynolds Museum expansion in Wetaskiwin; $38 million for Community Facility Enhancement Program grants used by communities across the province to upgrade halls, build playgrounds and other community facilities; support Culture Days, Open Farm Days and Rural Culinary Tourism; and support Film and Television grants so programs like Heartland can be filmed in Alberta. Municipal Affairs has provided stable capital infrastructure programs during the downturn in Alberta’s economy; supported rural and regional libraries with capital and operating grants; and helping rural municipalities create Intermunicipal Collaboration Agreements by providing resources and templates. Service Alberta is helping small towns apply for federal broadband money; announced new RFP for new provincial internet provider; improved First Responder Radio Service; is engaging Albertans on ways to improve condominium living; and banned door-to-door sales. Seniors and Housing invested $1.2 billion in affordable housing over five years; invested in 59 Rural Seniors’ Lodge Projects, including 19 now under construction; 31 per cent of all affordable housing is in rural Alberta; 33 per cent of all operating funding goes to rural areas; 97 per cent of all social housing in rural Alberta is run by Alberta Government; and half of all loans for the Seniors’ Home Adaptation and Repair Program are in rural Alberta. Until next time, take care. For more information please check the Alberta Government web pages or call my offices to talk to Niel or Tony at either 780-672-0000 or 780-352-0241.

Outerbridge is a champion of magic By Murray Green

fection. We are planning ahead and working on new material,” said Ted. “It is not just about doing a show, It is about creating an experience.” Marion and Ted also design and build original, audience-tested illusions and props for magicians. They have 30 years of performing experience with current technologies, oldworld craftsmanship and a team of specialists. The result is world-class magic ready to become a highlight of your show. All the magic has been refined over 25 years of performances in venues ranging from theatres, cruise ships, casinos and national television, to comedy clubs, schools and birthday parties. “I have devoted myself to the art of magic and illusion for over 30 years and I have always enjoyed building what I performed. I designed and built most of the props and illusions for our touring shows, including our current show Outerbridge Clockwork Mysteries.” He has developed illusions for the Cirque du Soleil and created magic for television, and movies including TriStar Pictures. “My partner and wife Marion brings a wealth of magical expertise to Outerbridge Magic. In addition to touring performing arts centers, casinos and cruise ships with me for the past 16 years, she has performed in a large-scale magic revue in Europe. Marion’s background in magic, as well as being a world class dancer, choreographer and seamstress have enabled her to make major contributions to the design and quality of our illusions and props,” said Ted.

Ted Outerbridge, along with his wife Marion, are considered the best magicians and Illusionists in Canada. Now the Montreal couple is bringing their internationally renowned family show to Camrose and the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. This is the show of the year you don’t want to miss. “Our show is quite large with grand illusions. I appreciate the large stage to have space for my time machine and alarm clock. It allows me to do the things I want to accomplish on stage,” said Ted. “We work with the space we have. We just finished a show in Quebec City for an audience of 70 and we arrived with two suitcases. What you are going to see in Camrose is a 20 foot truckload of huge illusions and we bring a lighting director with us.” The show entitled Clockwork Mysteries will take the audience on a fascinating journey through time. Within seconds of taking the stage, the Outerbridges fuse their revolutionary illusions with split-second artistry to hold viewers spellbound. The opening scene is called the museum of time. “We have a burglar come on stage to try and steal the time. Then I appear in a clocktower and try to stop her. We end up changing places and she disappears with the hourglass. But, no one can take away time. The show is about celebrating he time we have together,” explained Ted. “We celebrate moments in time that everyone can relate to. People often wish they could travel back in time to change something. We have

a time machine, so we can do that.” With the help of an elaborate Victorian time machine, the performers and spectators travel back in time together. It will keep you enthralled from the first astonishing illusion to the spectacular finale, where the Outerbridges create an experience that far exceeds the expectations of every spectator. “When I was five my best friend was a stuffed goose. I would talk to her and she would always listen to me. She always knew what other people were thinking. I gave her a spot in the show, Greta the physic goose,” Ted shared. “She reads the minds of spectators in the audience.

I also call up someone from the audience and teach them the first magic trick I learned when I was seven. By the time I was 12, I was Magic Ted and performing at birthday parties.” The audience is invited into a mysterious clock tower equipped with a variety of timekeeping devices. They become part of a race against time, experience time accelerating and slowing down, and participate in predicting the contents of a time capsule. Keeping their audience enthralled from the first astonishing illusion to the spectacular finale, the Outerbridges create an experience that far exceeds the expectations of every spectator. “I always try to present

magic or illusions that are unique. A lot of the crazy ideas I have involve large props. Illusionists tend to have more big boxes and people involved in the show that are cut in half and then reattached. I do some slight of hand popular pieces in the show that involved a piece of thread. In the meantime Marion levitates six feet off the ground. The show is about the audience, so no two shows are the same. It is a lot of fun and I look for people who are comfortable on stage.” The show on stage is always evolving to keep it fresh and different on each tour. “It takes about three years to develop a new piece and another three years of performing it to get to per-

PATRIOTIC QUILT Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Linda Dey of Camrose quilted this beautiful tribute to Canada quilt in her spare time, while spending colder months away in Arizona. She donated the quilt to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 57 (Camrose) to be given away to a veteran on a draw made during Remembrance Day. In her absence, Linda’s granddaughter Caitlin Twomey, left, and daughter Tricia Dey-Twomey presented the lucky recipient, Dave Cawley, right, a 23-year veteran, with the quilt on Nov. 11.
