COME ON, CAMROSE AND DISTRICT RESIDENTS!
Fill this Hot Tub with non-perishable food items for the Food Bank. Together, we can do it!
This December marks the seventh consecutive year that R & D Hot Tubs has put forth the challenge to fill a deep, seven-foot-square hot tub with groceries. All items collected before December 22nd will be transported over to the Food Bank, which is operated by Neighbor Aid, for distribution to those who are down on their luck and are forced to temporarily rely on the Camrose & District Food Bank. This year’s need is significant! If the tub gets filled before the pre-Christmas deadline, Russ and Doneal Greipl, owners/operators of R & D Hot Tubs, will increase the donation with a cheque in the amount of $500.

X-Bolt Micro Midas Looking Back
through the pages of The Booster
Shortened stock, sized for smaller shooters, satin finish walnut, matte blued steel, detachable rotary magazine, short throw bolt, adjustable trigger, bolt-action -- SCOPE NOT INCLUDED. The size is right. Browning guns that bear the name “Micro Midas” combine compact size for smaller shooters with deluxe features, creating a firearm that is both ornate and highly functional. The X-Bolt Micro Midas fits this criteria perfectly, whether it’s a young hunter’s first big game rifle or if it becomes the go-to hunting rifle for a smaller frames adult. The Midas touch. Deluxe rifles, embellished with fine features, checkering and an extra touch of hi power class are not reserved for full-size models. Not in the Browning line. The superb, compact Micro-Midas is designed to fit smaller-framed shooters like youth and women. The stock is shorter for fast shouldering and comfortable trigger reach. The 20” barrel balances well with the steel receiver and of course, this model has all the same features as the full-size model. Nothing is sacrificed because of its smaller dimensions. Perfect as a gift for young hunters or ladies, you’ll never forget the excitement in their eyes as they lift the lid on the Browning box that contains a Micro Midas X-Bolt.

Saints edge Kodiaks By Murray Green
Five minutes is all it takes. The Camrose Kodiaks gave up three goals in less than five minutes to drop a 3-2 decision to the Spruce Grove Saints on Nov. 26. Camrose played well for 55 minutes. After a scoreless first period, Spruce Grove stepped up to net three straight tallies to take a commanding lead. The Kodiaks fought back with a Dawson Schwengler power play marker with three seconds on the clock. In the third, Zach Vinnell closed the gap with another man advantage goal early. The Kodiaks poured on the energy in the third, but the Saints hung on. Camrose netminder Griffin Bowerman stopped 19 of 22 shots before giving way to new goalie Luke Lush, who turned away all seven shots he faced. Camrose out shot their opponents with 34 shots. Brock Bremer scored after a feed from Kyler Kupka to garner the overtime winner in a 2-1 victory over the Lloydminster Bobcats, Nov. 25. The Bobcats led 1-0 in the second frame. Nick Sutter put the Kodiaks on the scoreboard late in the third period to force overtime. Bowerman turned away 22 of 23 shots to earn the Camrose win. The Calgary Mustangs edged the Kodiaks 2-1 in another overtime contest on Nov. 23. This time the Kodiaks scored first when Ryan McKinnon netted a power play tally. Bowerman stopped 29 of 31 shots in the Camrose net. The Kodiaks blasted 50 shots on goal, but former Camrose goalie Joey May was solid and named the player of the game. The Kodiaks will host the Canmore Eagles on backto-back nights on Dec. 8 and 9. The four game homestand also includes games on Dec. 12 and 17 with Olds and Grande Prairie providing the opposition. Prior to the holiday break, Camrose travels to Okotoks and Calgary to play the Canucks with games on Dec. 19 and 20. Stollery night
On Dec. 8, the Kodiaks will be wearing a special jersey in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. It is also the Teddy Bear Toss (a wide range of gifts are encouraged). When the Kodiaks score their first goal, throw your gifts on the ice and all of these items will be donated around Camrose and surrounding area to children and families for Christmas. You can also leave the gifts in bins, if they can be damaged by throwing.

Stuff an ambulance helping out those in need By Lori Larsen
It is that time of year again to stuff an ambulance with donations to help Camrose Neighbor Aid Center food bank. On Saturday, Dec. 9, local EMS members and volunteers will be on hand in the parking of Camrose Safeway, 6800-48 Avenue, accepting donations. Just look for the flashing red lights. The food bank welcomes items such as canned foods (vegetables, soups, pork and beans), juices, pasta and pasta sauces, jams, oatmeal and other non-perishable food items. “It is a difficult time of year for those who don’t have enough and even harder with Christmas just around the corner,” commented Neighbor Aid Center coordinator Jo-Anne Tweed. “This is Neighbor Aid’s busiest time of year with donations coming in and hampers going out. Tweed described the growing need for donations to Neighbor Aid. “In September, we assisted 220 families, October 239 and November 230 families were assisted. A family may consist of one, two, four or more persons. Are there food insecurities in Camrose and the County of Camrose? Yes, there are. “Neighbor Aid is grateful to all those who step up and go the extra mile, sharing of their time, food donations and monetary givings. Together, we are making a difference.” Aside from food, donations of hygiene items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo and conditioner are needed and graciously accepted. Cash donations will be used to help purchase food and other items needed, such as fresh fruit and vegetables. Safeway will also have prepackaged donation bags available in various denominations to purchase and donate. Bring down the whole family and chance a meeting with Santa who, rumour has it, may be in and around the area, and help spread goodwill to members of the community who may be struggling.

Warning issues for government debt By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot
The Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has released its economic outlook concluding that Canada is in the worst shape compared to nations around the world when it comes to households and businesses borrowing money. These debt burdens are causing a high risk to our economy as a whole and current economic growth levels. With the two massive annual budgetary deficits and about $38 billion borrowed over the first two years (despite their own promise to have three “small” $10 billion deficits) the Liberal government, by the fourth quarter of 2016, had managed to put Canada’s debt level above that of the United States and China. The OECD observes that, “Indebtedness of households and non-financial corporations in many advanced and emerging market economies is high. In many countries, it is continuing to rise.” This is important because in 2015, the federal government had a balanced budget. Going forward, the federal government was set to operate “in the black” no longer growing the accumulated national debt (over $645 billion). In fact, Conservative governments always pay down on the accumulated debt when operating without a budgetary deficit. The current Liberal government refuses to announce a date when it will operate with a balanced budget. Some economists predict that if the Liberal government continues their borrowing, it will be 2055 before the federal books can be balanced again. The Liberals claim that their massive borrowing will grow the Canadian economy to the point where in the future (they don’t stipulate a particular year) these deficits will be ‘overshadowed’ by tax revenues flowing to the federal government from high annual economic growth levels. That’s what led Justin Trudeau to infamously conclude in 2015 that “the budget will balance itself.” Canada’s current relatively high growth levels are short or medium–term at best according to the OECD (and many would say a result of a growing United States economy–Canada’s largest customer). Normal growth levels are bound to return soon and hopefully we will not experience low or negative growth levels. The OECD warns that financial shocks, international incidents, and a host of other calamities could force positive economic growth numbers to be insufficient or even disappear. In the interim, too many Canadian households and businesses are borrowing too much to finance real estate, energy, regulatory, taxation and other costs. Interest payments must continue to be made and selling-off assets to pay interest or reduce debt loads are not so easy or lucrative when markets are tight and potential buyers are also debtstrapped. This OECD report means that the over-taxing and deficit–ridden Liberal government will be able to do very little to help Canadians in the event of an economic crisis. The Liberals have broken too many of their promises since being elected and they have disappointed too many Canadians with their failure to deliver sunny ways and real change for the average Canadian family. Now, Canadians are facing higher risks for the debt we incur while operating our households and businesses. The OECD has given us fair warning and as your Member of Parliament, I report that to you. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or previous columns you may write me at 4945-50th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780-608-4600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780-608-4603 or e-mail Kevin.Sorenson.c1@parl.gc.ca.

Fire Prevention winners
By Lori Larsen Elementary students (kindergarten to Grade 6) throughout Camrose showed their support for fire safety and Fire Prevention Week, which began on Oct. 8, by putting their names into a draw box for a chance to win a trophy, bag of goodies (supplied by Real Canadian Superstore) and a tour of the Camrose Fire Department. On Nov. 27, the winners of the draws were invited to the Camrose Fire Hall where they received their prizes and then toured the fire hall. Camrose Fire Department fire and life safety educator Jeff Knopf reminded the winners of the importance of this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Every Second Counts…Find 2 Ways Out” and that fire safety is vital both at school but also at home.

Walkable Camrose promoting an active community By Lori Larsen
Alberta Health Services, Lucy Ernst presented City of Camrose council with information given on Walkable Camrose during the committee of whole meeting held on Nov. 20. “A lot of local people say that their favourite thing about Camrose is the trail system and we are so lucky to have such a wellmaintained trail system in Camrose. “Back in 2012, the City of Camrose was one of five communities throughout the province that was selected as a pilot community to host a Walkable workshop and this community workshop brought people from a variety of sectors to assess how walkable our community was.” Ernst noted that most people focused on Camrose’s extensive trail system, but that other parts of the community were identified as requiring improvement. “The workshop (2012) also led to the formation of Walkable Camrose–a keen group of folks who meet quarterly–and we have some working groups that meet more regularly to identify some things in the community that we know we can improve upon.” Ernst added the importance of having representatives from both City Leisure Services and Infrastructure Planning Services on the committee indicating the expertise they offer is an asset to the ongoing work of Walkable Camrose. She also suggested the committee would encourage representation
on the committee by a city council member. “Walkable Camrose priorities are to promote safe and healthy environments for all, increased mobility for all, urban design and managed spaces that enhance walkability, and to nurture and sustain a culture of walking.” Walkable Camrose received a seed grant for $2,500 from Communities ChooseWell, an Alberta Recreations and Parks movement committed to building healthier communities. The grant was used to develop a logo and Snow Removal Campaign (as seen in local media), broaden partnerships, bench dedication project and towards the Walk21 conference held in Calgary in September. Other portions of the seed grant were used to fund a walkability among young families campaign. “We put together little kits with bubbles and sidewalk chalk and partnered with the Camrose Public Library,” explained Ernst. “We know there are many young families that spend time at the location, so we provided them (the library) with over 300 packages in June and again in August to give out to families along with a handout with specific information on how to make walks fun with children.” The bench dedication project involved refurbishing and dedicating a bench along Mirror Lake. “We wanted to look at something sustainable with some of our grant funding. The bench will
have a plaque with the new logo as well as a message from Walkable Camrose that invites people to walk a bit and sit a bit.” Two new Walkable Camrose logos were also funded which, according to Ernst, have received positive feedback from the community as a way to remind residents of Walkable Camrose’s continued presence and involvement in promoting a healthy community. Ernst also shared information provided at the recent Walk21 International (walking in the 21st Century) conference. “I co-facilitated a preconference workshop on the first day, then on the last
day, I was involved in a panel presentation. It was a wonderful opportunity to put the City of Camrose on the international map and be recognized for our efforts in walkability. “There were many opportunities to meet with delegates from around the world and have our work in Camrose recognized. There was a lot of interest with our Snow Removal Campaign and our Why Not Walk campaign, a campaign that features a different theme every month, such as Why Not Walk to School.” In conclusion, Ernst reiterated what the City is doing well in terms of
walkability. “It is great to see the City’s new Master Transportation Plan has active transportation referenced throughout the document. “The Wayfinding signage is a great addition to community, along with the pedestrian underpass, and place-making which is creating spaces that humans like and would want to walk to, such as the pocket park downtown and nature playground out at Stoney Creek.” Ernst said Walkable Camrose will continue to work within priority areas and encourage stakeholders’ involvement from a variety of sectors, remain connected in the community (hearing from people), and seeking additional grant funding. Councillor Kevin Hycha inquired as to whether the sidewalk conditions throughout Camrose had ever been brought to the attention of Walkable Camrose. Ernst indicated committee members have heard that there are a few different challenges within the community and that they document all complaints which they could make available to council. Councillor PJ Stasko asked if there were things the City could work on to help with walkability in Camrose. Ernst said, “Ongoing committee support and involvement in regards to walkability improvements and open mindedness to such things as the snow removal bylaw.”
Camrose given ChooseWell award for healthy policies By Lori Larsen
The City of Camrose, through the efforts of the Camrose Wellness Coalition, received the Communities ChooseWell Developing Healthy Policies Award. “Camrose has been a ChooseWell community since 2007 and has won numerous awards over the years through our efforts to embed wellness within our community,” said Lucy Ernst on behalf Camrose Wellness Coalition. “We are striving to have places in our community where people can come together be active, be healthy and spend time together.” The Camrose Wellness Coalition creates opportunities, removes barriers to healthy living and builds on existing resources while working collaboratively with community partners who share the same vision of a healthy community. “A healthy community has three parts,” explained Ernst. “Natural environment, social environment and built environment.”
Ernst went on to say the natural aspect includes how many greenspaces, parks and trails are provided throughout the city The social aspect involves the sense of belonging residents feel with the provision of gathering places. The built aspect is about the manmade assets residents have to enjoy, such as the recreation centre and swimming pool. “We have now created working groups in each of these three areas. Some of the things we have been doing in the natural environment includes partnering with the City to work on the new nature playground development in Stoney Creek.” As for the social environment, Ernst noted the neighbouring initiative which emphasizes the importance of social connectivity such as bringing people back to the days of neighbourhood block parties. She added that funding from Camrose District Support Services and the

hoods throughout Camrose. In support of the third concept of built environment, the coalition was suc-
cessful in getting healthier options at the Recreation Centre including concessions menus and snack vending machines.

Hinkley pushes bill to boost consumer protection in utilities By Murray Green
Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA Bruce Hinkley is pushing for the Private Members Bill 208 Government Organization (Utilities Consumer Advocate) Amendment Act and it is one step closer to becoming legislation. Bill 208 will give power to the Utilities Consumer Advocate to publish information on bad participants in the utilities industry. Albertan families and businesses will be able to look up utilities providers in one easy-toaccess-a nd-u ndersta nd website, giving power back to consumers and helping them protect their pocketbooks. The bill would also give the Utilities Consumer Advocate the ability to aid consumers in resolution complaints and strengthen the advocate’s role by law. “I was proud to bring forward legislation that will work to make life better for consumers here in Alberta,” said MLA Hinkley. “Albertans deserve the best deal they can get. Bill 208, if passed, will give them the tools they need to find the best retailer, making life more affordable for families and businesses.” The utilities system and utility marketing have been the source of complaints for years and the previous government allowed instability and uncertainty to grow in the market. Albertans deserve to have access to information that allows them to understand who they are buying from and to compare the track records of different energy retailers.

During the holiday season, keeping healthy habits up during festive gatherings may need a plan of action. Here are some helpful tips you may want to try. At home
Since you will likely be busier than usual, have convenient healthy food available. Buy washed, cut up vegetables and fruit to make it easier to add them to meals or snacks. Keeping higher calorie food out of sight may make you less likely to be reminded to eat it. If there are leftovers from a meal, send them home with guests in decorative holiday containers or package up for future meals. If you bake for the holidays ahead of time, freeze until serving.
At gatherings
Bring a healthier option–grilled shrimp, chicken satay, cut up raw vegetables or a fruit tray. Make a plan for each party like focusing on enjoying time with others, choosing smaller portions or sharing desserts. Socialize away from the food table. Choose lower calorie drinks like virgin Caesars, sugar-free pop or sparkling water. Smaller plate
Fill half your plate with vegetables and fruit. Focus on the enjoyment of eating food when eating and eat slowly. For more healthy eating tips and delicious recipes visit: www.albertahealthservices.ca/nutrition/ page12598.aspx” http:// www.albertahealthservices. ca/nutrition/page12598. aspx.

Letters to the Editor Goodbye, Grand Lady
I’ve known for a while it was time to say good-bye. I’ve been putting it off for almost a decade. But the Grand Lady needs a new home and my current home isn’t it. I met her 65 years ago. She’s the piano that I’ve thought of as “my piano” since I was 10 years old. ***
When I was very little, we lived in an upstairs suite in the house where Mom’s parents and younger sister lived. I loved listening to my mom and aunt play popular tunes and classical pieces on the piano. I was beyond excited when I was finally old enough (six years!) to take piano lessons. I practiced on Grandma’s piano that Mom and my aunt played. Looking back with adult eyes, I realize that my parents made big sacrifices so I could take piano lessons. My younger siblings had that opportunity too.
Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Christmas help
When the Rose City Farmers’ Market decided to sponsor a family for a Christmas with a hamper, they were astounded by the need in the Camrose community.
Sue Fowler put out feelers to find a family and she was overwhelmed with the response. Many local organizations stepped forward. She was even told to contact social services. The market executive chose a family of six (single mom and five children) through Community Connections. The family moved here from out of province and are struggling. Since then, another family was added to be sponsored. The second family of five hit hard times when the dad suffered medical issues and couldn’t work. President Judy Schlosser indicated that some of the market venders know what it is like to struggle
and they wanted to give back in some way. The Rose City Farmers’ market venders are contributing to this sponsorship and invite the community to help them. Suggested donations include new toys, games, books, crafts, gift cards and nonperishable food items. To encourage donations, the market will be giving Market Bucks for items brought in. Donation boxes are located by Duggan Cinemas in the Duggan Mall. You can drop off items between 1 and 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7 and 14. Lori Blades, Rose City Farmers’ Market Camrose

When I was about 10, my parents and grandparents had a falling out and our family moved to a new house on the edge of town. Among all the changes that meant, we no longer had access to a piano. No more piano, no more lessons. I was heartbroken. One day, my piano teacher phoned. “I’m sending someone over to see you,” she told Mom. A travelling piano salesman was in town. My teacher thought he should visit us. My heart lifted. When Mom reported this to Dad, he said, “Well, he can come over if he likes, but we’re not buying a piano. I’m looking at bills right now. We can’t afford a piano.” My heart sank. ***
The piano salesman was a slim white-haired man who appeared to be slightly arthritic. He travelled around in a van with used pianos in the back. When he arrived, my dad said to him, “Well, you’ve come at the right time. I’m just going through bills and we can’t afford a piano.” To put what comes next in context, you need to know that the house we lived in cost $8,000. It was a modest house, but still–you could buy a new house for $8,000. Dad gestured to a pile of bills and said, “Look at this. I owe $13,000!” The piano salesman said, “You must be an honest man if people will lend you that much money.” ***
The piano salesman suggested a miniscule monthly payment–possibly for the rest of Dad’s life–and a piano would be ours. Dad went for it! I was ecstatic. I thought of it as my piano, though other people played it too. Joyfully, I resumed piano lessons (which, come to think of it, my parents also couldn’t possibly afford). Nobody had to make me practice. The problem was making me stop playing the piano when it was time to do other things. ***
I loved that piano. I loved making music on it. I loved improvising and inventing new arrangements of familiar tunes. More than that, the piano was my faithful, and sometimes only, confidante. Into that piano, I poured my teenage angst, my hopes and dreams, emotions I had no words for and could never tell another person. When I left home, the piano stayed behind. But a few years later, my little daughter wanted to take piano lessons. My parents “loaned” me the piano so she could practice at home. As it turned out, my daughter hated piano lessons. There are still tooth-marks on the piano from when she was so frustrated that she bit it. But I just kind of never returned the piano. ***
A piano tuner told me he could tell from the serial number that the Grand Lady was manufactured in Ontario in the late 1890s. She has beautiful tone, a few nicks and scars, but no wrinkles. I still have my electronic keyboard–not a “real” piano, but appropriate for my current home. The Grand Lady is in a new home where once again children are learning to play music with her. Goodbye, Grand Lady, and thanks! ***
I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send an email to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com.

Nordlys Film Festival to feature filmmaker from Iceland
By Lori Larsen
The Nordlys Film Festival is just around the corner and promises another exciting lineup of films and entertainment. The festival will run from Friday evening Feb. 16 until Sunday evening Feb. 18, 2018. This year’s feature guest is internationally acclaimed Icelandic screenwriter and filmmaker Dagur Kari who will appear on opening night, Feb. 16. It is of particular interest that the Festival’s first international guest filmmaker is a northerner since Nordlys is the Norwegian for “Northern Lights.” Kari’s 2015 film, Virgin Mountain is bound to entertain attendees with its delightful and poignant portrayal of Fusi, a 43-year-old man who has, what some might call, a monotonous routine life living with his mother, until he meets Alma and Hera. After premiering at the Berlinale (Berlin International Film Festival), Virgin Mountain played at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. There it took home three top awards including Best World Narrative Film, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay. It also won the Nordic Council Film Prize for best Nordic Film of the year in 2015. Kari’s other films have been shown at Sundance and Cannes (2005) and have reaped numerous international awards.
Nordlys film selection committee chair, Hans Olson said, “Nordlys has always been a grassroots celebration of world cinema and it’s a true honour to have a filmmaker of Dagur’s stature coming to kick off the Festival.” The film takes a twist when the once stoic life of Fusi is interrupted after he receives a pass for dance lessons and is forced to take a step, which perhaps for him is a leap, towards other possibilities for his life.
Submitted The Nordly’s Film Festival will be welcoming international screenwriter and filmmaker Dagur Kari presenting his film Virgin Mountain starring Gunnar Jonsson, pictured above, as the somewhat odd character Fusi who lives a plain existence until life takes an unexpected twist.
Kari said of the film. “What I use a lot in the film is how we tend to judge people from their looks and when you see a guy like Fusi who is really big, has long hair and wears military clothes, you immediately think you know exactly what kind of person it is. I’m trying to show a more nuanced and complicated version of who that character is.” Actor Gunnar Jonsson, who plays Fusi, mused, “Although this is a drama, this is completely funny. I think it is comedy at its best when you combine drama and comedy.” Nordlys is known for bringing in exquisitely produced, provocative, humane and highly entertaining films from around the world. This year’s lineup will be no exception. The complete film line up will be on the website by Christmas. Tickets for the festival are now on sale. Early bird passes will be available until Jan. 14 at the Bailey Theatre Box Office or through the Nordlys website www.nordlysfestival.com. A pass covers all films, an opening reception and Saturday night concert.

Merry Christmas Fund needs your help By Murray Green
Merry Christmas Fund organizers and volunteers start packing hampers in 10 days. “On Dec. 1, we had $10,000 collected and we want to collect at least $24,000 more to cover our costs,” said Merry Christmas Fund public relations chair Dale Debnam. “Round Hill Elks, Camrose Legion and Enerplus Corporation have given us a good start, but our costs have gone up.” The Camrose Merry Christmas Fund was launched in 1965 to supply food hampers to less fortunate families in the community. Although some things have changed through the years, the need to provide food support hasn’t. Last year, the Merry Christmas Fund supplied 250 food hampers by raising about $30,000. “Our goal this year is higher. We are estimating the number of hampers to be more than 250 and our target goal is to raise $34,000 to cover the cost of the food. Last year, our costs were $33,000,” said Dale. “We are hoping people will donate soon because we would like to pay for the food soon after it is delivered. We would like to know if we can pay for the groceries.” Donations can be made at the Royal Bank and at the Camrose Fire Department. The Camrose Merry Christmas Fund is a registered charity, so people will be mailed a tax receipt during the first two weeks in January. The food hampers are intended to provide a good Christmas meal and food for an entire day. “If someone wants to have a hamper delivered to them, or a family, they have to register at the Camrose and District Neighbor Aid Center,” said Dale. The number for the centre is 780-679-3220. “The community has
supported this project for many years and we are thankful for that,” she added. “We are looking for the community to come through for us again to make Christmas a little brighter for everyone.” Volunteers also help deliver toys packaged by the Camrose Kinettes. “Some hampers will also have toys to deliver at the same address. The Kinettes sort and package the toys, the Lions Club picks them up and drops them off to us and we send them out with the food hampers,” explained Dale. “If volunteers have a small vehicle, we give them hampers without a lot of toys and those who have a larger vehicle can take more. We meet at the Firehall starting at 9 a.m. to start delivering hampers,” said Dale.” For more information about the Merry Christmas Fund, contact Larry Schultz at 780-672-1493. If you need a donation picked up, contact Dale Debnam at 780-672-8777. The hampers are packed at the Firehall on Dec. 14 and delivered to homes on Saturday, Dec. 16, in the morning. If people know they are receiving a hamper, they are asked to be home to receive the hamper to avoid sending it back. Undelivered hampers will have to be picked up at the food bank. She said it is a good outing for families who want to expose their children to a way of getting them into the Christmas spirit by helping others. At the Legion Thursday Night Bingo events, you can receive a free bingo card if you make a donation to the Christmas Fund or the food bank. Food or toys can be dropped off at the dart and crib clubs as well. Bingos in December are on Dec. 7, 14 and 21.

Ennis Sisters share east coast Christmas By Murray Green
Newfoundland’s Ennis Sisters were such a big hit the last two December’s, they agreed to come back on December 9 to help celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday as a country. The trio will be sharing their eighth annual holiday tour with local music fans to get Camrose in the Christmas spirit. The three sisters will be performing on the Bailey Theatre stage on Saturday, at 8 p.m. “The first five years we did all of our shows in Newfoundland. We have been getting requests from other parts of the country asking for the Christmas show, so we decided to take it off the island again this year,” said Teresa Ennis, prior to the show second in Camrose. “To be able to take our tour off the island, and spread our music to other parts of the country and see new faces is exciting in the magical time of the year.” The Ennis Sisters, Maureen, Teresa and Karen, are known for their signature holiday hit “I’ll Be There Christmas Eve,” from their 1998 release, Christmas On Ennis Road, and their tribute to the great Dermot O’Reilly “A Children’s Winter,” from their album, It’s Christmas, released in 2012. The concert will include carols and holiday tunes from the past and present, skillfully performed in interwoven harmonies and energy by the three sisters. “We love singing Christmas songs. It was a big part of us growing up, even just
around the house. It is going to be a really fun show with step-dancing, our original Christmas tunes as well as some classics. It is a really good family show. There is something for everyone,” added Teresa. The sisters grew up singing in church and have since turned it into a 20-year career with several albums. “The three of us are a harmony focused group. We will have a percussionist and a multi-instrumentist member with us and some of us play Celtic instruments.” A Juno award, SOCAN award, multiple East Coast Music awards and Music Newfoundland and Labrador awards, The Ennis Sisters are world-renowned performers whose inspirational harmonies, humorous recitations, Irish step dancing and engaging stage rapport, lift spirits and warm hearts. An East Coast Family Christmas with The Ennis Sisters offers timeless tradition, and features carols and holiday tunes of past and present. “We love performing Christmas songs and we have two Christmas albums out. People are going to hear some different songs with that east coast Celtic flair. We also tell a lot of stories growing up as sisters and what Christmas means to us,” explained Teresa. “It’s going to be exciting to play at the Bailey again. You get such a rush playing in these older venues. I’m looking forward to it,” said Teresa.

Managing holiday grief and stress Submitted
Holidays are a joyful time, offering a chance to reconnect with friends and family. But for many it can also cause loneliness and be painful time of year. You may worry about family matters, or it may be a painful reminder of past times. During the holidays
try focusing on some simple steps that can help reduce stress, depression and grief that are commonly felt during this time of year. Do something for yourself. Often times we are so busy taking care of others we forget to focus on ourselves. Take time for yourself this season by doing
something you enjoy, go for a walk, or try a new hobby such as yoga or meditation. Holidays can be especially hard if you are already dealing with the death of a loved one. Talk with a health care professional in your area or call the Mental Health Helpline 1-877-3032642 or Health Link at 811.

The first show is on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 8 p.m. and a matinee will be held on Sunday, Dec. 10 beginning at 3 p.m. in the Augustana Faith and Life Chapel. Chez Nous: Christmas with Augustana continues a Camrose choral tradition as the Augustana Choirs present their annual Christmas concert. The theme this year is

Best Newfoundland Christmas Pageant By Murray Green
The Best Little Newfoundland Christmas Pageant Ever is now running on three consecutive nights, Dec. 8 to 10 beginning at 8 p.m. each evening. Whizgiggling Productions brings this Christmas special to Camrose. Although it is adapted from the novel, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson, it is set in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The six member cast take the audience to another level with their beautiful music and quick humour. It seemed like a dull task for Mrs. O’Brien, who has been put in charge when the original leader, Mrs. Armstrong, hits a moose with her car. What could be so hard? It’s always the same old Mary and Joseph and the same old Christmas carols, but
no one was expecting the Herdmans to show up for the auditions. All three showings of the play will be held at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. The Herdmans are known as the worst kids around, who don’t know anything about Christmas, beyond the hamper they get every year. They only showed up because they heard there were free refreshments. What has the potential to be the worst pageant ever, turns out to be the best one as everyone learns the true meaning of Christmas. The Herdmans never really understood Christmas before. They learn after taking over the annual Christmas pageant and start to re-imagine it in their own twisted way.
Doors open 6pm • Buffet until 730pm • Show starts 8pm Includes two show tickets, single or double room and hot breakfast the next day. Plus applicable taxes.

A moment of one’s time goes a long way By Lori Larsen
This time of year people may be rushing around attending seasonal concerts and events, preparing for visiting friends and family and searching out the perfect gift. But for some this time of year may mean doing without some of the basics that others take for granted, so it is imperative to remember the true meaning of giving.
need, Larry appreciates that helping others who are in need is vital to maintaining the wellbeing of any community. “In 2008, the need peeked and, at that time, we delivered about 300 hampers. It was a bad economic downturn in Alberta, Canada as a whole, and especially in Camrose. Since then, it has subsided a little bit
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Larry Schultz packs up food and goodies for the Camrose Christmas Fund hampers.
Larry Schultz, a volunteer with the Camrose Merry Christmas Fund since 1995, understands the impact giving of your time can have on others. “When I first moved to Camrose, I got involved with helping the Merry Christmas Fund packing and delivering hampers,” said Larry. “Over the years, my involvement has grown to the point where Bernie Boser asked me if I would consider running as chairman when he wanted to retire after putting in more than 25 years.” Larry graciously accepted the position and has been chairing the notfor-profit organization now for 10 years. “We collect donations of money to purchase food for hampers which are made up and delivered to needy people in Camrose and area at Christmas,” explained Larry about the Camrose Merry Christmas Fund. Prior to his move to Camrose, Larry and family lived in 11 different communities during his career with CIBC. In each community, Larry was always involved in some manner with Christmas hamper drives. “Some communities didn’t have very much demand and others had more.” No matter what the
and currently the demand is about 250 hampers.” He commends all the volunteers who help with the Christmas Fund noting that without them, it would never happen. “I tell people who are coming for the first time on a Saturday to help deliver hampers that it is a great opportunity to do as a family. Involve your children because it teaches them the spirit of volunteerism and lets them see what a difference they can make with just a little extra effort for the community.” Larry proudly remembered his own two daughters helping out and the influence it had on them. “Once when I was delivering hampers and my two daughters were helping me, we had delivered to this one particular home. My daughters were carrying the box of gifts and I was carrying the groceries. The look on the children’s faces was just priceless. They were kind of in awe that they were going to get groceries and the gifts, of course.” It quickly became apparent to Larry that his daughters were also affected by the experience. “When it really struck home was when we walked out and my daughter said to me, ‘You know, Dad, I go to school with that girl.
I didn’t know that she was in need.’” Helping others is an invaluable lesson that can never be taught too early. Larry has also been volunteering with Habitat for Humanity Camrose Society since 1995 when the formation of the Camrose society first began. “I think we started the first build in 1996,” remembered Larry. “At that time, I was a member of Rotary Club and they were asked to spearhead part of the construction of it. That triggered my interest in Habitat. I found out more about it as we went to the build and learned about what it was doing.” Habitat is something Larry finds he can relate to–people being able to get into their own home and feel safe and comfortable with a roof over their heads. “They do not have to be worried about it and they can go on and have a better family life. “I was able to experience the real difference it made in one family,” added Larry, further explaining that Habitat had more or less acted as an enabler for this family when they were able to send two of their children to university. “I am not sure that would have happened because they were under financial strain in their previous accommodations.” Larry related another happy Habitat story regarding one particular home recipient who, as a result of his work with helping build his Habitat home, became an electrician by trade. “It was because of the Habitat build that he got involved and, as a result of that, was able to improve his financial situation significantly.” Larry feels strongly about lending a helping hand to those in the community and encourages everyone to consider the impact of giving, even if it is just a small amount of your time. “Some people think they can’t make a difference, but you know it is the little things that you can volunteer for and once you feel the satisfaction, that is when you really get hooked. You want to do more and you appreciate and see what your efforts have done. If you are relying on the government or organizations to do it, it isn’t going to happen. “There are a lot of people who put a lot into Camrose community. It is up to people to make the difference and making communities, like Camrose, great places to live.”
In memory of
Joelle (Oppen) Haugen December 27, 1977 ~ December 7, 2005 If you could see me now, you wouldn’t shed a tear, Though you may not understand why I’m no longer here. Remember my spirit, that’s the real me. I’m still very much alive, oh, if you could only see! I’ve beheld our Father’s face. I’ve touched my Saviour’s hand. The angels all rejoiced as I entered the Promised Land. Beyond the gates of pearl, I walk on golden streets. I’ve touched the walls of jasper, dipped my foot in the crystal sea. The beauty is beyond words, nothing can compare. I’ve even seen your mansion; someday I will meet you there. Allow Jesus to be your guide, His word will show you the way. So, please, don’t cry! We will meet again someday! You are always in our hearts. A Tribute to Our Friend
Katherine “Helen” Gartner who passed away on November 14, 2017 Helen was the best friend our family ever had. We spent many happy times together. She was there for all of us through thick and thin – celebrating in our children’s and grandchildren’s births and supporting us in family losses of parents and a sibling. Helen was a very loyal, helpful and generous lady who had a strong, active faith. She was always up for adventure, loved to laugh and could always recall notable dates. Helen was a stylish gal who enjoyed travelling, taking brisk walks and going for coffee. She loved music, reading and classic movies. She was an excellent cook, enjoyed some collections and absolutely loved Christmas. Helen treasured spending time with friends and family and she valued the simple things in life. Helen was laid to rest in Stettler on November 21, 2017. She will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by many. If memories bring us closer, we are never far apart For you are always in our thoughts and forever in our hearts. Until we meet again… Lovingly, Audrey & Ron Fischer & Family

Schielke proud to drive his Ford Model A By Murray Green
George Schielke of the Bittern Lake area has been driving a long time. One vehicle he doesn’t get tired of driving is his restored 1928 Ford Model A. He bought the classic in Camrose from Henry Klug. It belonged to Henry’s parents. “My dad had a 1927 Pontiac and it seemed every time we wanted to use it, he had to fix it first. It must have been a lemon. My dad seemed to have two left hands as well. He could drive horses, but the car wasn’t worth much to him,” George laughed. “I noticed that the Fords kept going by us. I always wanted a Model A. They were a nice driving car. It was the people’s car. The Pontiacs looked nicer, but they couldn’t keep up to this old girl.” The Ford Model A was the second huge success for the Ford Motor Company, after its predecessor, the Model T. First produced on Oct. 20, 1927, but not sold until Dec. 2, it replaced the venerable Model T, which had been produced for 18 years. This new Model A (a previous model had used the name in 1903-04) was designated a 1928 model and was available in four standard colors. “I bought it for $5,000, but the pieces were sitting in five-gallon pails for four years while I was fixing it. I did all of the work myself and it is worth $21,000 now,” explained George. “I didn’t paint it, I did everything else.” By Feb. 4 1929, one million Model As had been sold. The range of body styles ran from the Tudor at $500 US (in grey, green or black) to the Town Car with a dual cowl at $1,200 US. “The only parts I had trouble getting were straight wheels. They make a lot of replacement pieces now.” Model A production ended in March 1932, after 4,858,644 had been made in all body styles. “There are close to 5,000 pieces to the Model A, so it was a job putting it all back together. It is original as much as it can be. Even the wood ridges and around the door
GOOD OL’ RELIABLE
Murray Green, Camrose Booster George Schielke has relied on his 1928 Model A for a number of years after putting it back together in his shop. Admiration for the car when he was younger led to his decision to restore the vehicle.
posts are original. If you are a real stickler, it should have a red steering wheel, but it has a black one,” he admitted. The engine was a water-cooled L-head inline four-cylinder with a displacement of 201 cubic inches. This engine provided 40 horsepower. Top speed was around 65 mph (105 km/h). The transmission was a conventional three-speed sliding gear manual unsynchronized unit with a single speed reverse. “The last couple of years, I haven’t gone to very many car shows. I used to go to a lot of them. I enjoy going to them and talking with other people. You can take a car like this and park it on the street or at a parking lot and someone will come up to you and start talking. They will say, I remember my dad having one of them.”
The Model A’s fuel tank was situated in the cowl, between the engine compartment’s fire wall and the dash panel. It had a visual fuel gauge, and the fuel flowed to the carburetor by gravity. A rearview mirror was optional. In cooler climates, owners could purchase an aftermarket cast iron unit to place over the exhaust manifold to provide heat to the cab. A small door provided adjustment of the amount of hot air entering the cab. The Model A was the first car to have safety glass in the windshield and was the first Ford to use the standard set of driver controls with conventional clutch and brake pedals, throttle and gearshift. Previous Fords used controls that had become uncommon to drivers of other makes. The resulting Model
A was a commercial success, selling over four million during four years of production.
“I’m thinking of selling my car. I may not be driving much longer, but I sure enjoy it,” George said.

Two trucks were observed leaving an abandoned residence in Fer-
intosh at a high rate of speed. Believing the residence may have been victim to a break and enter, police were dispatched. The second truck was eventually located and the driver was subsequently arrested. Bashaw RCMP attended the residence in Ferintosh, at which point a utility trailer was located on the property. Checks revealed the trailer was stolen out of Bawlf. Two stolen sleds were located inside the garage along with a log splitter stolen from Camrose. A search warrant was executed at the residence at which point three more individuals were located, arrested and charged. Several police officers and detachments worked together to put this file together, resulting in the four individuals facing multiple charges. BRCF assists Camrose Public Library
Submitted Battle River Community Foundation chairman Vivianne Grue presents a $24,400 cheque to Deb Cryderman, library director.
The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a grant to the Camrose Public Library. The grant is from income from the Ross and Denise Irving Fund, created with a gift from the estates of Ross and Denise Irving to assist the Camrose Public Library. For the past several years, the Library has used the funds received to support adult programs. The Battle River Com-
munity Foundation exists to support projects and facilities, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment
funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted more than $5,000,000 to support community facilities and programs operated by organizations like the Camrose Public Library.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

Top curlers to enter Grand Slam of Curling By Murray Green
Camrose will be hosting one of the major curling events in the world at the EnCana Arena next January. The Rose City Curling Club is bringing the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling Meridian Canadian Open to Camrose on Jan 16 to 21, 2018. “This will be our sixth event in the arena and it will be another first-class event. We are very excited to be hosting,” said event chair Neil Bratrud. “We are the only series that has international curlers as part of our field. Entry is by merit. We look at the world rankings before each event and those teams are invited. Only the best of the best teams will be coming to Camrose. You will see the best teams in the world,” said Rob DePodesta, manager, integrated sales and sponsorships of the Grand Slam of Curling. “We want to leave a legacy for the community. We provide 75 telecasts and more than 200 hours of live television in the series. Between 27 and 30 hours of television will be from Camrose,” said DePodesta. “We will have the 16 best men’s and 16 best women’s teams in a triple knockout format. That means if you lose three games, you go home.” The Grand Slam of Curling has a junior program for children, where junior curlers will have the opportunity to curl on the same ice as the professionals. “This is home for me, I’m originally from Lougheed, so my mom and dad were super stoked that this event is coming here,” said former Lougheed curler and Olympic Games gold medal champion Kevin Martin. “I loved triple knockout when I was playing because it is a different mindset than round robin. Winning ‘A’ gives you the hammer and ‘B’ has an advantage over ‘C’ when the hammer (last rock) is concerned.” He went on to say the timing is perfect. “I fly out to the Olympics on Feb. 2, I imagine most of the players will fly out a little sooner than that. This means that the Grand Slam of Curling is the last event to prepare for the Olympic Games. Not all of the Olympic teams will qualify for this Camrose event, because it’s only the top 16

The entire Kodiaks Hockey team were also in attendance to support Craig Steinwand, a CAFCL client who fills water bottles for all of the Kodiaks practices and home games. “The Kodiaks were an auction item and Donna Hansen bought them for $1,250 to come to her farm and pick rocks and roots,” said CAFCL public relations manager Cherilyn Sharkey. The evening went off without a hitch and, as a result of generous donations and support from community businesses and members through donations of auction items, cash donations and ticket purchases, raised a net profit of $72,000.
