program started in the 1960s. It was conceived to ensure that every boy and girl in the community would have something to open at Christmas. Even back then, every boy and girl, up to age 17, received a hat, mitts, and other gift item(s) appropriate for their age. Decades later, this tradition continues with the Camrose Kinette Club, in co-operation with the local Lions Club, Neighbor Aid and Merry Christmas Cheer Fund, continuing to devote hundreds of collective hours to the remarkable cause. This year, nine dedicated Kinettes work to collect and sort donations, pack boxes and take on other responsibilities with the massive undertaking of being community Santa Clauses to up to 400 local youth. The difference this year though, with just days to go before crunch time, is that supply of Silent Santa donations is at an alarming, all-time low. The Kinettes have come to The Camrose Booster with an urgent request for items, particularly for males and females in the 9 to 17 age group. The Kinettes are desperately short of recreational sports items (footballs, soccer balls, sleds, etc.), family games, creative art items, Lego, K’NEX, blankets, personal hygiene kits and other items such as hairdryers, curlers, straighteners, etc. Other gift ideas include movie passes, swimming passes and Kodiaks tickets. If you are able to donate, drop boxes are at Centre Court (at the Santa display), Duggan Mall, and beside the community room at Real Canadian Superstore. Toy and cash donations can be made at Shuman Insurance and will be used to purchase suitable gift items. Kinettes would like to thank the community for all the generous gifts and donations they have received so far. Without the community support, they would not be able to make Christmas merry for families.

Winter Snow school concert By Murray Green
The See Amid The Winter’s Snow concert will be held on Sunday, Dec. 17. The Rosedale Valley String Orchestra and Central Alberta Homeschool Choir will be performing Christian life songs at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Centre beginning at 4 p.m. It will be a free-will offering. This concert involves
many of the local home schooled children in the area. “The Camrose choir practices at the Canadian Lutheran Bible institute on Friday mornings. About 11 years ago Debbie Zepick, the director of the central Alberta home schooling choir, asked the Rosedale Valley Strings if they would like to do a concert together and so the See Amid the Winter
Snow concert was born,” said student Jonathan Luscombe. “One year they decided, after taking a group and going to Mwanza Tanzania, to meet a local pastor who had started an orphanage for boys to sponsor and fundraise for this struggling group. Since then, we have been able to provide beds, as well, and so much more due to these concerts.” Continued on page 3

Similar concerts will be held in Lacombe and Ponoka prior to the Camrose date. “We have a separate choir in Lacombe with 60 students and the Camrose choir has about 50 students. Each choir practices on their own and then join together to form a large choir for the concerts. Students range from Grade 1 to 12,” explained Jonathan. “We will be singing and playing Christian Christmas classics, as well as a new one called No Room,” he revealed. This concert is a great way to start the holiday season off.

Letters to the Editor A metaphor for 2017, or any other year
“Oh, poor Baby,” I said out loud. And felt some remorse. My daughter had given me an amaryllis bulb in a box. It’s an annual tradition. She has a friend who, at this season every year, has amaryllis bulbs to sell as a fundraiser for Huntington’s disease. Every year my daughter buys several and gives them to friends and family members. Was it really two weeks since I’d had the box with the amaryllis bulb? When I opened the box, I was dismayed. The box contained a plastic pot, peat (which needed to have water added)–and of course the amaryllis bulb. In case you don’t know about amaryllis, the bulb looks like a very large onion. At some point, little shoots pop their heads out the top. Over the next few weeks, the amazing amaryllis grows so fast you feel like you can see it–stems and leaves rise up, sometimes more than an inch every day. And then four or sometimes even five glorious six-inch across flowers emerge from the stems. Last year, at its peak, my amaryllis had nine flowers on two stems–a spectacular display for the holiday season. But when I opened the box this and saw the amaryllis bulb, I wondered if the plant would even survive. There was indeed a fat bulb. But not just the bulb. Box or no box, light or no light, the amaryllis had already started to push out a stem with a bud on top. But inside the dark box, there was no room to grow. It was literally boxed in, curled around in a fetal position. Instead of being green, it was pasty pale yellow. It looked deformed. That’s when I said, “Oh, poor Baby!” I wondered if it would be able to uncurl itself, or if it would just shrivel up and die. I went through the motions of planting it–awkwardly, because the stem was so curled around–and left it sitting on a kitchen counter. A couple of hours later I returned–and was amazed. Already, the plant had begun to uncurl! A day later, the amaryllis stem was perfectly straight, getting greener by the minute. And became my joyous metaphor for the year 2017. So what does this have to do with anything that matters to you? Perhaps, like me, you’ve felt some constraints in the past year–maybe even “boxed in” sometimes. Perhaps you’ve had some intentions that have not unfolded in the way you imagined. Perhaps, you’ve had moments of doubt and confusion about the state of the world or the state of your life. And yet and yet… During 2017, I came to understand and even appreciate how my external world reflects back inner constraints and inner possibilities. I came to appreciate the limits of “striving” and the power of “allowing.” In fact, everything that at some point I thought was unfortunate, has turned out to have within it, a gift. Welcome to the metaphor Like the amaryllis bulb, we each have within us everything we need to unfold–the life force that knows our “blueprint.” Like the amaryllis, we need times of rest and replenishment, and then we need space–we make space–for growth. Boxed in or not, in the light or not, when it’s time to grow, we are going to grow. We are going to bloom. And then it will be time for another time of rest and replenishment, and then another thrust for growth. Seasons of growth and expansion are followed by seasons of “winter”–and possibly breakdowns leading to breakthroughs–followed by ever new forms of growth and expansion. And so it is. ***

I very much enjoyed reading Murray Green’s interview with Carmen Mason, “Mason Leads Xtatix” as a lead up to this New Year’s Eve dance (Camrose Booster, Nov. 28). However, I take friendly issue with two of Mason’s recollections, while evaluating music over the past 57 years. I think you need to go back 70 years. His quote was “The ‘50s and ‘60s was the greatest time for music…best time in history.” It seems he missed the fantastic music of the late ‘40s, due to his age, I guess (I graduated 10 years before he did). The late ‘40s saw the birth of modern music (the Viking Jives Band), which consisted of primarily of drums, piano, saxophones and/or other wind instruments. This band consisted of my sister on piano, Arnold Hafso on saxophone, Lindsay Thunell on drums
and Bob Thunell (who later ran Wisemen’s Way Bookstore in Camrose) on trumpet and clarinet. This band with changing members was popular for many years. Dubucs of Vegreville, Horineks of Sedgewick and Nissens, Coultmans, Persons of Kinsella and Irma played similar music. His quote, “Before rock and roll, all dance music included fiddles and accordions,” was therefore not true. There were also multi country western (old-time) bands. So that era produced a lot of good dancers such as jiving, fox-trots, polkas and square dances. We learned them all (most of us “rurals” had no television). When rock ‘n’ roll came in, we enjoyed it too. It is great that 58 years later, you (Mason) are still able to enjoy playing, but it’s not surprising, because making music and dancing to it keeps us young at heart. If you check out the Duggan Mall Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings, you will likely find half a dozen old-timers from the ‘30s performing there regularly (though less skillfully now), enjoying it and being enjoyed by a full house. It is interesting to note that many musical groups now are a blends of two or more music genres. So, good luck to Xtatix on Dec. 31. It sounds like

BRSD adds trustees, plan for the next three years By Murray Green
All newly-elected members of the Battle River School Division board of trustees started in their roles on Oct. 23. The first official meeting was held on Nov. 27 where they immediately started making decisions. The board formalized an agreement to work together in positive ways, by passing motions about a Code of Conduct and an etiquette to follow at meetings. Trustees learned that there are 6,238 students enrolled in BRSD this year. Enrollments are up in some areas of the school division, while others are experiencing declines. This continues to be reflection of similar population changes happening overall in rural communities. The 2017-18 budget was reviewed and submitted to the government by Nov. 30. Board members received an overview of the Annual Educational Results Report (AERR) three-year education plan for 2017-20. BRSD’s Provincial Achievement Tests (PAT) results have gone up each of the last two years. The school division has also improved in a number of others areas, according to the board. The school division continues to be concerned about the challenges of recruiting teachers. BRSD staff are working hard to implement new ways of evaluating student learning, so they can better understand specifically what’s required in order to help children succeed. Expanding schools has resulted in the BRSD requesting new modular classrooms at C.W. Sears, Sparling and Bashaw schools. Across the division, the cost of maintaining and repairing aging schools continues to be a challenge for the board. Battle River has nearly 40 students who have come from other countries to study. That number is growing as the International Student program continues to successfully recruit students from around the world. This is a way to learn about other cultures and increase the diversity of local schools. It also generates a higher student enrollment and additional funding for some of the division’s smaller, rural locations.

Merry Christmas! – Camrose Regional Exhibition
Spelling Bee fun By Murray Green
It’s known as a “gift card.” It’s really a “smile card.” Put a smile on someone’s face this Christmas.
St. Patrick School hosts the Christmas County Spelling Bee in conjunction with the Christmas concerts on Tuesday, Dec. 19 and Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. on both days. You may have your own special name. Wonderful Counselor. Prince of Peace. Everlasting Father. Even a brief reflection on the names of Jesus brings power and strength to our faith. Award-winning writer Celeste Clydesdale has centered her Christmas musical, The Christmas County Spelling Bee, entirely around this theme. Set within the narrative of a lively spelling bee, this warm musical consists of nine delightful songs, as well as the Michael W. Smith classic, “Emmanuel.” As the musical unfolds, the contestants learn more about the character and nature of our Savior.

Shumka’s Nutcracker is a new holiday classic, produced and performed by Alberta artists. They will have two shows, Dec. 15 and 16 with 7:30 p.m. start times on both evenings at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. “This is really exciting for us to come out to Camrose. It has been something that we have been wanting to do for some time now. We were fortunate to be one of the first groups to perform on the Lougheed stage when it was first built, at the opening ceremonies,” recalled Joe Hoffman, one of three artistic directors for the show. “ We are excited to come back to a familiar stage.” This luxurious and uniquely powerful production features ballet, folk dance and character dance in a celebration of Tchaikovsky’s beloved score. Shumka’s Nutcracker blends the grace and lyrical nature of classical movement with the strength of Ukrainian character dance, leaving audiences exhilarated and entertained. “This show was developed for the Jubilee stage in Edmonton, so we have to do a little sizing down, but not a lot. The larger dance groups will still pack the same punch and not worry about running into each other. It is a two-hour production and we are on stage for half of it,” added Joe. The Ukrainian Shumka Dancers and guests from Edmonton’s Citie Ballet join forces for the presentation of Alberta’s Ukrainian Nutcracker. “The nice thing about the Nutcracker story is that you can add your touch, or version of it. A lot of research went into this show a long time ago and the gentleman who originally wrote the story had a Ukrainian background, so we can easily adapt to it.” Clara’s Dream is the only Ukrainian folk ballet representation of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. Given the famous composer’s Ukrainian heritage, the production incorporates Ukrainian Christmas traditions, folk and character dance, a grand orchestral version of Shchedryk (“Carol of the Bells”) and Ukrainian symbols woven into the lavish sets and costumes. “We take some of that storybook feel and turn the dream scene into its full potential. We realize what the dream is capable of and we use vibrant dances and colours to give it our flare. Continued on page 15

“People are aware of the story this time of the year and we want people to use their imagination in the dream scene,” said Joe. Performing the roles of Clara and the Prince, Shumka welcomes back Tetyana Lozova and Yaroslav Tkachuk from the Kyiv Ballet of the National Opera of Ukraine. Shumka Artistic Associate and longtime company member Joe Hoffman will perform the role of the mysterious Uncle Drosselmeier. “The set is built in pieces, so we are flexible and versatile. We try to perform outside of Edmonton every chance we get. We are thankful for the opportunity to perform in dozens of Canadian cities including Camrose. We went on a seven week tour to China in my first year. We are always looking for opportunities to explore. We are hoping to take our dancers to Ukraine within the next couple of years. Even going into smaller towns within Alberta brings us back to our roots.” Making an exciting return to the Jubilee Stage, Shumka is thrilled to welcome alumnus, So You Think You Can Dance Canada finalist and Cirque Du Soleil performer Jeffrey Mortensen, returning to the role of Clara’s mischievous brother, Fritz.

Back in October, the National Assembly in Quebec passed Bill 62, which requires that government employees and public servants “demonstrate religious neutrality,” and that they must “neither favour nor hinder a person because of the person’s religious affiliation or non-affiliation.” The government plans to ensure such neutrality by outlawing face coverings for its workers, and by outlawing face coverings for any Ian Wilson, person receiving public services Religion, Augustana from the government. The bill Campus, University addresses other matters as well, of Alberta such as religious education at daycares, but its primary concern is face covering. There are many issues to consider here, not the least of which is the definition of “religious neutrality,” and whether such a thing is even possible. The bill itself suggests that it may not be—it allows for special accommodations and makes concessions for the “emblematic and toponymic elements” (that is, the important symbols and meaningful places) of Quebec’s own “religious cultural heritage.” But the issue I’d like to address is the bill’s assumption that face covering necessarily has something to do with religion and religion alone. The bill does not specify any types or styles of coverings—it simply outlaws covering one’s face. There’s some irony in the bill’s failure to specify. Like Alberta, Quebec is cold, sometimes very cold, and a good face covering is often necessary. Quebec residents opposed to the bill immediately picked up on this irony, protesting the new law by boarding public transit while wearing balaclavas. The bill does grant that individuals may cover their faces on account of particular “working conditions”—conditions like, I assume, working outside during the Quebec winter—but the bill’s lack of specificity nonetheless raises the question of what exactly constitutes a “religious” covering as opposed to a non-religious one. Of course, for those familiar with Quebec’s legal history, including the ill-fated attempt to implement a “Charter of Values” in 2013, the bill’s emphasis on face covering comes as no surprise. Bill 62’s obvious intent is to outlaw the coverings worn by some Muslim women, even though it makes no mention of Islam whatsoever. This perceived legal targeting of Muslims comes at a time when racism and hate crimes towards them are on the rise in Quebec, and there has been little interest in attempting to understand the reasons why Muslim women cover their face. When a Muslim woman covers her face—or any portion of her head—it’s important not to assume that the covering is primarily a religious act, even in the context of a devout Islamic community. The Quran rarely addresses clothing at all, and when it does it generally exhorts women and men to be modest in their dress. In the one passage that provides some detailed instruction concerning clothing, the text urges women to cover their chests and advises that women should not reveal anything “beyond what is acceptable to reveal” (24:31). What might be acceptable is never really clarified. Outside the Quran, a number of authoritative ahadith (prophetic traditions) promote covering the head, but covering the face is a long-standing point of debate in the history of interpretation. Islamic tradition being not entirely clear on these issues, it’s not surprising that ethnographic research shows that Muslim women cover for all sorts of reasons. To be sure, many women directly relate their coverage to their practice of Islam and their religious convictions, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms ensures that they may do so. Bill 62 already—and rightly—faces constitutional challenges on religious grounds. Numerous Muslim women, though, do not associate covering with Islamic practice per se. Reasons cited frequently include non-Islamic customs and traditions, personal aesthetic preferences, marking and maintaining cultural identity, and simply not having to worry about hairstyling and makeup. Many of the common justifications for covering are not “religious,” at least not in the way our society tends to talk about religion. It’s widely recognized in Canada that visibly wearing a cross, for example, is not necessarily a religious statement, even though it can be. We should also recognize that covering one’s head or face is not always and only about religion, even when it might seem otherwise.

Unique gift ideas By Lori Larsen
Some of the most amazing gifts people receive are the ones they least expect. This year’s list of best gifts for 2017 include some true and tested favourites, but also a few unique surprises. Personalized books have become very popular and there are many online businesses that offer the service of putting together your very own story, literally. They include love stories, family history and an all-time favourite–children’s books. Imagine how excited your children will be when they see their names and stories in print. Wine and beer of the month clubs are a great gift for the connoisseurs in your life. They can try a little of everything before making a huge commitment to one particular brand. For those well-established people in your life or older children and families, why not investigate adventure gifts. Depending on your budget, they could be as simple as paying for camping fees at one of the local campgrounds or an amazing helicopter tour offered throughout our beautiful province. Technology is always a fan favourite for all ages. Gaming systems, games, video and audio gifts or, for the person who already has all the techno gadgets, a universal charging station would be ideal and won’t break the bank. Some of the new products on the market also keep the sustainability of our planet in mind and are made of natural products that not only protect the environment, but promote its wellbeing. Consider, for example, beeswax candles with no artificial fragrances or dyes, convenient and
portable drying racks for hanging clothes instead of using electric dryers, handmade soaps that do not contain dyes or other harsh chemicals, soapnut laundry soap bars made from 100 per cent biodegradable soapberry tree nuts, seed packets or potted herbs to promote fresh food choices or clothing made of ecofriendly or recycled fabric.
For the handy person, multi-functional tools will keep things at their fingertips. Inexpensive photo frames make wonderful gift ideas for the entire family. Grandparents will rejoice in a multi-frame compilation of photos of their precious little ones, which can be easily printed off your home computer. Homemade ar t, straight from your hands and your heart are oneof-a-kind gifts that don’t often require a great deal of cash, but are made with the most valuable of gifts– your time. The least expensive and easiest gifts include spending an afternoon having a tea with an elder relative or acquaintance, visiting a sick friend and bringing them a bowl of soup, sitting with a child and reading a book or setting aside family time each month for games or a sit-down meal. Reap the rewards of the most sought after gift – the gift of your time.

Sports enthusiast John Short shared the life and times of Normie Kwong during the Rotary Club of Camrose speaker series on Monday, Nov. 20 at the Camrose Resort Casino. Sports writer John Short, who calls Camrose his second home, reflected on the life of the football player, businessman and Alberta’s 16th Lieutenant-Governor, Normie Kwong. “First I want to thank the citizens of Camrose for allowing me to come back. The Viking Cup (hockey tournament) made a lot of foreigners feel welcome here,” said John. “I remember Lim Kwong Yew as Normie, who was a Canadian football player, who played for the Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He has his name on the Stanley Cup once (as owner of the Calgary Flames) and four times on the Grey Cup,” recalled John. “Only one other person has his name on both cups, Wayne Gretzky. He was briefly the owner of the Toronto Argonauts.” He played for his hometown Calgary Stampeders from 1948 to 1950 and, after a trade, the Edmonton Eskimos from 1951 until his retirement in 1960. “Normie got his start in football as an 18-year-old kid right out of high school. He became the first Canadian professional football player of Chinese heritage in the CFL. He quickly showed he was very bright about money. A year after winning the championship in Toronto he asked for a 100 per cent raise, all the way from $3,000 a year to $6,000 a year. He didn’t get it, he got traded instead. As a result he became a hall of famer, role model and a great citizen who set at least 30 CFL records, many of which still stand today.” He was also an active businessman and politician being part owner of the Calgary Flames and serving as the lieutenant governor from January 2005 to May 2010. “He was a first generation Canadian. When he was younger he was often told he couldn’t swim with the normal children (because of skin colour). And yet, he was responsible for welcoming new Canadians despite bias from all levels of government. He helped build the foundation for new Albertans, which led to his appointment as lieutenant-governor,” added the 80-year-old speaker. The son of Chinese

immigrants from Taishan, Guangdong, Kwong was the first Canadian professional gridiron football player of Chinese heritage. In addition, Kwong was also the first
person of Chinese heritage to serve as lieutenant-governor of Alberta. “Too many educators treat sports as trivial, but it’s not trivial. It is absolutely
essential. I’m very happy that Camrose has been as active as it has been for as long as it has.” One of Normie’s best friends was Jackie Parker.
They liked to bet each other on anything. “One night, Jackie lost all of his furniture in a bet. This is a true story. On game day the Eskimos needed a late touchdown. In the huddle, Normie broke everyone up by telling Parker to get us in the end zone and I’ll give you your furniture back.” Three members of the Eskimos became leaders in Alberta, Don Getty, Peter Lougheed and Normie Kwong “Don once told me his job as premier was of much less importance than being the quarterback of the Eskimos. He had no doubt about that. Again the value of sport in the community. Lougheed said there is so much politics in sports and sports in politics that it is the same game.” The next Rotary speaker event is on Monday, Jan. 15 at 11:45 a.m. with Frank Farley, presented by Dr. Glen Hvenegaard at the Camrose Resort Casino. Register the Friday before each event by calling 780-679-4657 (leave a message), or email RotaryCamrose@gmail.com.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Amanda, left, daughter Paige and son Porter Dyer hold up a few of the items generously donated to the Kinette Club Silent Santa initiative. By Lori Larsen
Long-time Camrose Kinette Club member Amanda Dyer has been teaching her children the value of giving back and making other people’s happiness a priority. After moving to Camrose in 1998, Amanda quickly realized a need to get out into the community, meet people and give of her time. “I moved to this community knowing no one,” said Amanda. While on an assignment for work, Amanda met a young woman who was skating with the Camrose Rusty Blades who asked her if she would be interested in joining the club. “I was a figure skater at one time and, even though I hadn’t skated in awhile, I thought I could probably do this. The woman also said she was involved in Kinettes. All I knew about Kinettes at the time was my mom had one of their cookbooks.” As a young person new to the community, Amanda thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to get to know people. “That was in the fall of 1998 and I haven’t looked back. It was a good fit and they welcomed me. It is a great sisterhood,” said Amanda of being a member of the Kinette Club. Almost immediately Amanda felt a fervor for the club’s biggest project, Silent Santa – a program that she indicated has been running for at least 50 years. “We (Kinettes)work with Jo-Anne Tweed (program director) at Camrose Neighbor Aid who does all our intake for us. The day before we start packing hampers, we get the list which gives us the gender and age of the recipients. It is all kept confidential. Then after we are done packing, the Lions Club come and get them for delivering.” That is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the process required to make this amazing project
work. Prior to packing, the Kinette members, including Amanda, promote, gather, transport and store all the items donated which, in itself, takes time, energy and effort. Last year, 400 hampers were made up then paired with food hampers and delivered to families in need. Even as a full-time insurance broker and a busy mom of two delightful children, Amanda still manages to find time to give back. She and her husband Jim, who is an active member of the Camrose Kinsmen Club and the community as well, feel it is vital to instill the notion of giving into their children, 12-year-old son Porter and nine-year-old daughter Paige, who have both been very involved with the Silent Santa program since about the age of five. During the move of items brought in for the Silent Santa initiative this year, Porter inquired as to when he first began helping. “I told him, you were there in your baby carrier,” laughed Amanda. “He would sit in his baby carrier while we packed hampers. He literally has been around it since the day he was born.” Amanda said her daughter Paige, who has also been helping since she was very young, cannot wait to help out every year. “I was telling her the other day, this is Silent Santa week and this is what we (the Kinettes) are doing this day and that day.” Without hesitation and with the excitement of a nine-year-old, Paige quickly responded that she really wanted to help as much as she could. “It is so heartwarming. It is just a way of life for our family and we all embrace it.” Now that both children are older, they are able to help even more with some of the more physically demanding aspects of the project. “At times, those extra arms and legs that don’t get tired as eas-
ily are so helpful,” smiled Amanda. Both Porter and Paige also helped with selecting gifts for children ages 12 and up this year. “There are always gaps in what is provided – who doesn’t like to buy dump trucks and dollies,” noted Amanda. “It is the age group 12 and up that we use the monetary donations to go shopping and we did that on Sunday. “They’re gifts that these families wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford. Every little person deserves something special and if the community is going to give, we are going to give that right back.” Amanda said how extremely grateful the Kinette Club is for the generous contributions of the community, including a big haul from the recent Charity Voluntary Checkstop. “This community is amazing in what they will do to provide for and fill in the gaps. There are a lot of yes’s. We really do look after each other and that is the way it should be.” All the remarkable volunteers will be busy packing hampers on Dec. 16 in a kind and generous effort to ready them for delivery and bring smiles to the faces of many children in the community. Amanda encourages any woman looking to be part of a fun and giving group to join the Kinette Club. “Presently, we have nine ladies, all with jobs and children of varying ages. We just had a new member join this fall who said, ‘You guys are so much fun because it is so laid back.’ It is a chance to let loose, talk and share in each other’s joys and sorrows. It is easy to just work, work, work and come home and be in your little cocoon. “And as our club continues to grow, we can do other projects,” said Amanda happily. While the club may be small in members, it is huge in heart, like Amanda.

TOUR OF GIVING
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Members of the Tom Jackson’s Christmas 150 tour rehearsed for the evening concert held on Nov. 25 at the Camrose Regional Exhibition. Tom’s warm and welcoming manner was apparent as he rehearsed one of the traditional Christmas carols to be sung during the concert. The evening concert raised money which was donated to Camrose Neighbor Aid Center-Food Bank and other various not-for-profit organizations in Camrose. Money and food items were also collected during the entire Festival of Trees weekend held Nov. 24 to 26 and donated to the Camrose Food Bank.

Hats off to the Kodiaks By Jane Cherry-Lemire
Arts and sports together. What an excellent idea! In 2016, the Camrose Arts Society found themselves in need of some extra fundraising in order to be able to deliver its many programs and special events. After a conversation with Jason Heise he suggested talking to the Kodiaks coach Boris Rybalka to see if there was anything we could do together to help raise some funds. Knowing that paint nights are popular it was decided that we would hire Tara K Studios to facilitate a paint afternoon for the Kodiak hockey players and Boris. They each created a painting that depicted a hockey player wearing the player’s jersey number. Once these creations were done the boys went out to businesses and family members to see if they would purchase the pieces with all funds going to the Arts Society. The support was awesome and this proved to be a great partnership! I cannot say anything but positive things about Boris and the young men who make up the Kodiaks team. They show true community spirit with a smile always! For 2017, the Kodiaks approached the Arts Society to see if they wanted to work together again! Of course the answer was yes and we set out to come up with an idea. This year we decided to make the boys and the coaches the brunt of the fundraiser in a more specific way. We hired caricaturist Simon Glasson from Edmonton to create caricatures of everyone with the idea that they would once again approach businesses and others to purchase the caricatures. Many businesses did just that and any that were still for purchase went to silent auction at the November 26th game. Simon did a great job and was on hand at the game to do caricatures for the fans also. Many who had theirs done, left a donation for the Arts Society. In total, just over $4,700 was raised. The Camrose Arts Society is very appreciative of the support and efforts of Boris, Jason, Kodiaks, businesses, family members and all who placed bids and left donations at the game. The money raised will help the Camrose Arts Society in providing valuable programs and special events for children and adults throughout the year.

KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE THIS HOLIDAY The holiday season is a time of high fire risk! Fires, injuries, death and property losses increase significantly during the holidays. Heating, candles, cooking, and smoking cause the majority of fires during the holiday season. Practice fire safety in all of your holiday season activities by keeping the following in mind: • Keep your natural Christmas tree moist and away from heat sources. • Keep decorations away from lights and candles. • Keep matches, candles and lighters away from children. • Don’t overload your electrical circuits. • Don’t place space heaters too close to combustible items. • Test your smoke alarms. • Plan and practice a home fire escape plan. • Never butt out in plant pots. “Stub it right…don’t ignite!”

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Steve Mitts, one of the Community Dinner organizers, welcomes anyone to the come and join in a celebration of togetherness.
The humble beginning of just an idea has turned into one of Camrose’s most treasured Christmas events that has fed hundreds of people in a joyous family setting. “The whole meal is designed to serve the community,” said Mitts. “We feel blessed to be able to serve the community in such a powerful and wonderful way.” People from all sectors of the community come together for this event to share in the truer sense of the season, to enjoy a meal and spend time as part of a larger community or, more importantly, family. It is for Augustana students who may not have an opportunity to travel home, refugees or new residents to Camrose who want to experience the giving spirit of the community, people who may find themselves alone during the holiday season or anyone interested in joining others in food and togetherness. “This event is not designed for those who are necessarily down on their luck and may just need a meal, but is inclusive of anybody who wants to be part of a Christmas family setting. We understand that Christmas can be hard for some individuals and this may be a reprieve for them for a evening.” Last year, the event fed over 250 guests and
organizers anticipate those numbers could rise to close to 300 this year. With hosting the event the day before Christmas Eve, organizers also feel it will be even more special. “We can make it so it is a real Christmas dinner,” delighted Mitts. “Families will be inviting other family members to come for Christmas, so why not experience it here at a free community-attended meal.” With doors opening at 3:30 p.m., the hosts are inviting people to come before the dinner service and have a cup of coffee, listen to some soft live music and enjoy the company of others in a warm and inviting environment. Guests are encouraged to relax in other areas of the church while waiting to be seated for dinner at which point they will be ushered to the dining area on the lower floor. Elevators are available for people with mobility challenges. With the growth of the event comes the need for more volunteers to assist in areas such as the kitchen, dining room service (cleaning and setting tables), set up and take down and ushering guests. All donations for the event are graciously welcome including food or cash. This year, the Church of God will be officially presenting the event and therefor able to offer receipts for any cash donations. “Our corporate sponsorship grows every year,” remarked Mitts. “Businesses come forward even

This new book will continue documenting our community’s history from 1980 to present day, and those who live or have lived in the community are invited to submit their stories. In addition to vital statistics like birth dates, deaths and marriages, we want to hear stories about school days, sporting events, and life in general! It’s your submissions that will make this project a success, and our book will not be complete without them!

Chamber members put books under the tree By Lori Larsen
Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce members attending the Dec. 6 general meeting held at the Camrose Regional Exhibition, dug into their pockets to support the Books Under the Tree campaign. Over $600 was raised in the short one and a half hour luncheon. The funds will be used to purchase books for children of families in Camrose and area who may not have the means to do so themselves.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce member Tim Vant puts in a donation towards the Books Under The Tree campaign.
Camrose Family Literacy (part of the Camrose and Area Adult Learning Council) program coordinator Lynne Hartwick informed attendees at the luncheon on the importance of early literacy. Family Literacy supports families with preschool children by assisting parents in providing an atmosphere in their homes
that is conducive to early learning. In referring to an Early Development Instrument (EDI) used to determine what level children are at prior to entering kindergarten Hartwick said. “Over the last few years the EDI showed that, province and Camrose wide, approximately 75 per cent of kindergarten children have the skills they need to succeed in school when they come to kindergarten. That means 25 per cent of children don’t and that is a big percentage. When children start kindergarten a little bit behind it has an affect overall. “There are a lot of families in Camrose that need extra help and quite often we go into homes that have very few books or no books in their home.” Hartwick added that having books in the home can really make a difference in a child’s education. Books Under the Tree
“Our goal with the Books Under the Tree campaign is to try to have one really good quality book for every child in families receiving the Christmas hampers.” Hartwick noted that Battle River School Division staff gave the campaign an early start this year by donating $560, money from their Wear Jeans to Work initiative. Staff pay a fee for the privilege of wearing jeans to work then turn around and give the funds to a local charitable program or organization. In this instance the Books
Camrose Family Literacy program coordinator Lynne Hartwick speaks to attending Chamber members about the importance of early literacy.
Under the Tree program was selected. “I was able to pick up 152 really good children’s books with that money,” said Hartwick happily. “We have had some other donations as well and with what you have donated today we will get as many more as we possibly can.” Hartwick indicated that the campaign has plenty of books for children up to the age of five or six, but lack books for school aged children. BRSD on reading
Battle River School Division relations advisor Diane Hutchinson also spoke on the importance of early literacy. “We are so excited and thrilled that the Family Literacy group were able to purchase 152 books, because we understand what happens when children don’t have literacy in their lives.” Hutchinson added that due to changing times,
traditional ways of teaching children to read is not enough. “We need to ensure that every student has the skills they need to continue to adapt in the world and also to have a desire to keep learning and take what they learn in one situation and transfer that into a different situation.” Hutchinson quoted statistics indicating that today’s college graduates, in the 15 years post graduation, will have between 10 and 14 jobs. “About a third of those jobs don’t even exist yet. This is a level of change that is new and different and we need to help our children be ready for that in ways that we never had to do before.” Hutchinson went on to say that by these new standards one third of adults in Canada are functionally illiterate and that as business owners the concern lays in the costs associated with orientation and training of employees with lower literacy and comprehension skills. “This is why we want books and language to be part of a child’s home experience. If children don’t get those basic skills they fall behind and that makes it really hard to catch up.” Hutchinson referred to the Battle River Community Foundation Reading University summer program and how the four week program is designed to help those children who need a little extra help in learning how to read. “Since 2009 we have helped about 450 to 500 students. It gets children to the point where
Battle River School Division relations coordinator Diane Hutchinson provides valuable information on the connection between early literacy and future success in the lives of children.
they are reading at grade level and they can move on and succeed. “We give them a book to keep and some of them will tell us it is the first book they have ever owned or they don’t have books in their home,” said Hutchinson about the excitement the Reading University students feel towards getting their very own book to keep. “Through the Books Under The Tree campaign we expose children to books and make sure they have books in their houses. Anyway we can support families to make it easier for them to bring reading into their house. That is really a Christmas present for me.” For more information on family literacy and Books Under the Tree campaign contact the Camrose and Area Adult Learning Council at 780-672-8754.

The automotive section of
Landals goes places with his Dodge Polara By Murray Green
When Vern Landals was a teenager, he dreamed of owning a 1964 Dodge Polara with a lot of horsepower. His dream came true through some hard work. “This is a California model that a guy brought up unrestored and then I bought it from him. It came with a 426-cubic-inch street car motor, not a max wedge (maximum performance wedge), which was the ultimate model,” explained Vern. “My youngest son had most of the equipment to change it over to a 426 max wedge out of it, so we did. It is a lot more fun now (and a dream come true). “It has a little more pep to it now. This is what they used before they had the hemi engine. Racers used the same intake as a hemi has with this motor.” It features two Edelbrock 600 cfm carbs, hemigrind cam, A518 automatic transmission with overdrive, shift kit and a sure grip rear end. The car was finished and painted by Jamie Landals, Vern’s son. “The hemi engine actually replaced this engine. I’m a Chrysler muscle car kind of guy. I’ve rebuilt lots of cars over the years, but this is my favourite.” A new “C” pillar for the hardtop coupes, combined with the more attractive front- and rear-end styling, made the ‘64s look totally new, resulting in a significant increase of sales over 1963. “I like cars. I’ve been a gear head for a long time. I built them in Camrose before moving to Sedgewick. I like them all, I’ve built a 1968 Charger, 1965 Thunderbird convertible, 1956 Cadilliac convertible and 1963 Galaxie convertible, but I’m down to just this one now.” Vern was well known as a boiler maker and billiard hall owner in Camrose and Wetaskiwin, prior to retiring in Sedgewick. “I’m to the point that I can’t build them anymore. This one is my keeper. I got out of high school in 1964 and these just had come out and the roof line on this car just floored me,
MEAN MACHINE
Murray Green, Camrose Booster The Dodge Polara was often unassuming on first glance, but the 426 engine quickly turned heads on the streets. Vern Landals snapped up the opportunity to add this California model to his collection. Now it is his keeper.
I loved it. The one I saw in the showroom in 1964 was black like this one and had tinted windows and the same interior as this. This car brings back a lot of memories for me.” The 1964 Polara 500 option cost $170, bringing the starting price of a convertible to about $3,227. Other models were listed for less. “The surprise in restoring this car wasn’t on my side. The guy that went to California to pick it up and brought it home, along with a parts car, didn’t get along too good with his wife at that time and they split up. He had to sell it, which was in my favour. He advertised it in the paper. My son saw it for sale and advised me that it was rust-free. So I grabbed the car trailer and a pocket full of money and down to where the car was. I made a deal to buy both the car and the parts car.” He paid $2,500 and it is worth about $50,000
now after restoration. That doesn’t include the labour he put into it. “I wouldn’t sell it for less than that because it means a lot to me.” The Polara had a rear wheel drive, a front positioned engine and a fourdoor sedan body style. “You don’t get your money back because, by the time you order parts and pay shipping costs, it adds up really fast. It is starting to get too expensive to restore a car anymore.” The basic body of the 1962 model continued until 1964, revised and lengthened by the new Chrysler vice-president of styling, Elwood Engel. “I used to be able to restore a car with all of the body work, new interior and paint for about $20,000. You can’t do it for that anymore. Now it would be over $50,000 to restore one like this.” Although Vern has also retired from restoring
classics, he still loves to admire the beautiful muscle machines of the ‘60s. The Polara continued as Dodge’s sporty mid-size model featuring an engine-
turned anodized aluminum trim strip along the car’s flanks, bucket seats and deluxe vinyl upholstery. “They just don’t make them like that anymore.”

The City of Camrose has begun a planning process to revitalize, re-imagine, and rediscover the downtown area through the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan (DARP). “Downtown Camrose has always been the economic, social and cultural heart of Camrose and an important part of the community’s overall identity,” said Mayor Norm Mayer, “This plan will help ensure that it not only stays this way, but that it will thrive even more.” City of Camrose director of planning and development, Aaron Leckie, explained the premise behind DARP. “There are certain principles that need to be addressed, most significantly is the amount of vacant and under-utilized land downtown. There is over a million square feet of just bare land that isn’t really contributing a lot to the urban environment. We would like to see development on those parcels.” As opposed to the City just making decisions regarding best options for moving this plan forward, they are reaching out to the public to hear their suggestions through a series of public engagement activities beginning in February and through the City website and blog. “Some residents have really good ideas about how long store hours should be available, what types of businesses are missing downtown, how certain businesses can improve
their marketing and sales tactics to encourage sales and diversify the economy,” remarked Leckie. “The City has a couple of key goals, but we are really going to the public with more of an open agenda. What can we do about these vacant lands downtown? What are some major principles? What works and what doesn’t? Should we follow the traditional heritage feel of Main Street and try to replicate that in other areas of downtown or do we want to see modern buildings with modern construction practices? ” Leckie suggested that these would be some of the questions the City would like to see answered. “And one of the big questions: do we try to imitate and follow what is already there or do we try to build something new that fits into downtown but, in the long term, will contribute to urban development?” Leckie said the existing Downtown Action Plan, which came into effect in 2007, didn’t really comment on the types of incentives or ways in which vacant lands could be developed. Noting the Downtown Action Plan had not been updated for 10 years, City administration broached City council about the need to rewrite it from a standpoint of keeping up with modern building and market trends and identifying what type of housing/development people want. The Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan will reinforce and update some of the
guidelines in the existing Downtown Action Plan. “We noticed downtown is an area where we really could get some significant development without bulldozing a bunch of older homes or buildings that still contribute quite a bit,” Leckie said. “This is an opportunity to have intervention without a lot of impact.” In speaking of residential housing in the downtown area, Leckie noted the number of residential units downtown doubled between 2006 and 2016. “We went from about 250 to about 500 units in the downtown area. People are wanting to live close to where they work, close to certain shopping destinations and amenities.” Other than green-filled communities, Leckie said the downtown is the area that is growing the fastest in Camrose. “It made sense for the City to do this plan. We now have in-house resources that we have never had before. Previously, we would rely on a lot of expertise outside the organization and that always cost money.” Doing the majority of the work in-house not only saves resources and money, but allows the City to build up the capacity of City staff who actually live in Camrose. “We tried to come up with more of a made-inCamrose model across all of our planning processes.” Continued on page 38

Tyler Jordan Broz December 6, 1998 ~ November 25, 2017 Tyler Jordan Broz, beloved son and friend to many, passed away suddenly on November 25, 2017 from complications of Type 1 Diabetes. Tyler was born on December 6, 1998 in his hometown of Calgary, Alberta at the Rockyview Hospital before moving to Camrose in 2005 to be closer to family. He was an old soul taken from us too soon. At a young age, he enjoyed swimming, Timbit’s soccer and TaeKwan-Do. He was introduced to skating and hockey at the age of 8 and it quickly became his passion and he spent many hours at goalie camps, arenas and hanging with his buddies in the locker room. His love of hockey also led him to his first job as a hockey referee, and he loved being with the younger players. Ty was an only child who made friends easily, enjoyed having buddies over every weekend, sleeping over at friends’ houses, playing smockey hockey and staying up late playing video games. In August 2017, he moved with his best friend Paige Haugen and her family to Kamloops, British Columbia and attended Valleyview Secondary School. He was set to graduate in January 2018, finally achieving his goal of graduating high school. After graduation, he planned to travel for a bit (as that was his deepest passion) before pursuing university, and was interested in architectural design or becoming a lawyer. Ty had the good fortune to travel to many places in his short life: Mexico, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Washington, DC, Las Vegas, Bahamas, Costa Rica and Thailand. His most cherished travel experience was to the Philippines where he met family, made new friends and was fully immersed in the culture. Tyler will be fondly remembered, loved and deeply missed by his parents Bruce and Stephanie Broz, his Gammie Holly Guest, Grandpa Dennis Rusinak, Grandparents Sharon and Ray Altstadt (Sedgewick), Grandma Lynda Broz; his Uncle Wally and Aunt Ana Broz (Hardisty); his cousins Jared (Paige), Brandon (Brandy), Nicholas, Jessica, Chad (Kira) and Oliver. He is now resting peacefully with his Grandpa Keith and his Aunt Lila. Ty will be remembered for his beautiful smile that could light up a room, his sense of humor and his struggle with diabetes. He had a soft spot for cats and little kids, especially his newest cousin Oliver. He enjoyed playing video games, listening to music and eating midnight dinners of steak and fish sticks. In Ty’s memory, donations are gratefully accepted to the Alberta Diabetes Foundation to help find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. A Funeral Service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 8, 2017 from CityLights Church, Camrose, with Rev. Clayton Milgate officiating. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Alberta Diabetes Foundation. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Robert Willard Manning October 10, 1930 ~ November 28, 2017 Bob was born in Hughenden, passed away in Hardisty and called the farm near Amisk home. He was a quiet and private man with his family, farm and friends meaning everything to him. Participating in sports was important in his younger years, playing hockey or curling and baseball as the seasons dictated. He remained a sports fan, especially for the CFL, cheering on the Edmonton Eskimos to the end. Bob also had a wonderful, subtle sense of humour, enjoying seeing and sharing the lighter side of life with a smile, roll of the eyes or a rise of his bushy eyebrows. Resourceful in his youth, he often trapped and hunted to obtain hides to sell. Early photos are a testament to his success, especially one season where he was able to purchase a watch with the proceeds. On February 28, 1953, he married Arlene Abrassart and, soon after, they started a family. Bob began a career selling insurance, but an accident to his father meant he was needed full time on the farm. He was able to make use of the welding course he had taken in Edmonton to repair the farm machinery. Bob is survived, loved and very much missed by Arlene; their daughter Connie Kraft (Gordon); son Kevin Manning (Cindy); grandchildren Niki Pettifor (Dave), Travis Manning (Tanya), Tracy Whidden (Malcolm) and Tiffany Davis (Kent); and his brother Donald Manning (Shirley). Bob looked forward to and delighted in visits from all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren Layla, Ethan, Lizzie, Paige, Addison, Alivia, Isaiah, Hayden and Josie. He was predeceased by two infant sons and his parents Erol and Algerene Manning. A family graveside service will be held at the Amisk Bethany Cemetery in the spring. Quietly remembered every day, Sadly missed along life’s way. No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts, you’re always there. Memorial donations in Bob’s memory would be welcome to Hardisty Hospital Auxiliary, Amisk Bethany Cemetery, Hughenden Firefighter’s Association or a charity of your choice. Dorothy Ellen Meyer June 17, 1945 ~ November 29, 2017 Dorothy Ellen (Innes) Meyer, loving wife of 54 years to Gary J. Meyer; mother to Kim Meyer-Lucas (Alan), Tammy-Rae Syrnyk (Allen), Sherry Loesch (Bradley), Bradley Meyer (Tammy); and grandmother to Jasmine Barth (David), Paris Loesch (Matthew), Corbin Loesch, Kelsey Rae Syrnyk, Skylar Syrnyk, Taytem Syrnyk, Brett Meyer and Garett Meyer; made her journey to heaven on November 29, 2017. Dorothy was born on June 17, 1945 and was a vibrant spirit whose dynamic personality naturally drew others near her. Her signature color was red and she ‘wore it’, ‘decorated with it’ and ‘drove it’ very well during her lifetime, and we wondered if it stemmed from her Scottish roots! Her passion for singing and playing music was nurtured from an early age by her musically gifted parents, Steve and Vida Innes. Her memory of being surrounded by music was a natural occurrence for herself and her siblings Stephen, Gordon, Verna, Elaine and Darlene, in their childhood home. Her exceptional voice and love for the guitar was shared in her home as Gary harmonized along on many community stages, with friends and family around the campfire at the Fork Lake, AB, or anywhere that guitar would travel including their second home in Queen Creek, AZ where her newly established friend group gathered round. She valued all forms of artistry including poetry, novels, stage plays, fashion design, home decorating and hosting beautiful, seemingly effortless, dinner parties for family and friends. She never hesitated to assist when called upon to lend support to others who valued her artistic eye! Dorothy could magically ‘fancy up’ an ordinary day and make it feel special for those around her. Dorothy and Gary spent their early married years in Kelsey, AB as they purchased Dorothy’s Grandmother (Zimmerman) Burke’s original homestead. In 1966, they purchased a farm at Spring Lake, AB, where they raised their four children and instilled the gift of family values. In 1981, there was another move into their new home in Daysland, AB, and the town life experience began. Dorothy loved her many job opportunities in Daysland such as a hostess at Blatz’s Steak House, Calgary Power office administration and Canada Postal clerk before establishing the Daysland Bottle Depot alongside her life partner, Gary. Community members would remark and marvel at how these two could work together fluently day after day. Dorothy would comment that ‘Marriage isn’t always easy, but it is worth the effort!’ Their retirement years were filled with attending family events, traveling with their dearest friends and many global adventures, but Dorothy always believed ‘Maui still won’ as her favorite destination. It is with amazing grace that we shared our Mother’s last earthly moments. She loved deeply and the love that came back from her husband, children and grandchildren was palpable. She was prepared for the final journey and her trust in our Lord Jesus calmed her spirit and brought peace to us all. Will the circle be unbroken by and by, Lord, by and by, there’s a better home a-waiting in the sky, Lord, in the sky… A special memorial celebration for Dorothy will be held in the spring of 2018. Donations in her memory can be made to the charity of one’s choice and the family would like to thank you for this consideration. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Five strong women changed Alberta By Murray Green
Five Alberta women were featured by the Rotary Club of Camrose speaker series on Monday, Dec. 4 at the Camrose Resort Casino. Alberta’s Famous Five were petitioners in the groundbreaking Persons Case. Led by judge Emily Murphy, the group included Henrietta Muir Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise Crummy McKinney and Irene Parlby were involved in a case brought before the Supreme Court of Canada in 1927 and later decided by the Judicial Council of Britain’s Privy Council (1929), Canada’s highest court at the time. Together, the five women had many years of active work in various campaigns for women’s rights dating back to the 1880s and ‘90s and they enjoyed a national and, especially in the case of McClung, an international reputation among reformers. At the time of their victory, the media dubbed the group the Alberta Five. Over time, as the case took on a privileged position in Canadian women’s history, the group became popularly known as the Famous Five. They have come to represent an entire generation’s political activism, including an earlier, nationwide campaign for women’s suffrage. More recently, the case has attracted renewed controversy. Some see the Famous Five as a symbol of modernity, women’s political rebellion and progress, and human rights more generally. Still others have criticized some members of the group as racist and elitist and see their accomplishments as tarnished by associations with the eugenics movement. Reactions to the Famous Five have varied widely, but the significance of their contribution to the development of women’s rights in Canada was underscored in 2000 with the dedication of a bronze statue called Women Are Persons by Edmonton artist Barbara Paterson in Ottawa and Calgary (1999). Register the Friday before each event by calling 780-679-4657 (leave a message) or email RotaryCamrose@gmail.com. The next event is on Monday, Jan. 15 at 11:45 a.m. with Frank Farley, presented by Dr. Glen Hvenegaard at the Camrose Resort Casino.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Kodiaks split series with Canmore Eagles By Murray Green
The Camrose Kodiaks dominated the first and second periods and hung on to defeat the Canmore Eagles 5-4 on Dec. 1. Camrose stormed out of the gate and took a 2-0 lead on tallies from Brock Bremer and Tyler Schendel. After the Eagles grabbed a goal of their own, Colson Gengenbach restored the two goal lead for the Kodiaks. However, before the period ended, Canmore replied again. The only goal in the second came from Matt Dykstra to give Camrose another two goal lead. The Eagles were soaring in the third and tied the match. With about two minutes left on the clock, Jacob Kendall garnered the winner for the Kodiaks. Camrose netminder Griffin Bowerman stopped 39 of 43 shots he faced. In the rematch, the Eagles scored a goal in the first and added another in the middle frame to coast to a 2-0 victory the next day. Goalie Luke Lush turned away 23 of 25 shots to earn the Camrose win. Camrose dropped a close 4-3 contest to the Drayton Valley Thunder on Dec. 5. The Kodiaks opened up a 2-0 lead when Schendel and Kyler Kupka netted markers for the bears. The Thunder was heard after that as the team collected four straight tallies before Dykstra pulled the Kodiaks to within one goal. Lush stopped 32 of 36 shots to keep Camrose in the game. The Kodiaks will continue the four game homestand with games on Dec. 12 and 17 with Olds and Grande Prairie providing the opposition. Prior to the holiday break, Camrose travels to Okotoks and Calgary to play the Canucks with games on Dec. 19 and 20.

Downtown revitalization Continued from page 30
“Until the city hears from the public and biggest stakeholders, which in the downtown area are the businesses, it is really hard to say how the policy or some of the interventions might affect downtown.” Leckie said the City acknowledges that the main street and a couple of the other commercial areas have more-or-less been the heartbeat of downtown for decades and that the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan needs to be very careful about making sure any new buildings or development compliment what is downtown and not replace or move those businesses. “The City is looking for businesses and services that are not currently offered in the downtown area and are trying to attract those businesses as supportive industry. “We want to make sure the business owners have enough involvement in this plan so that they will be able to say, with confidence, why downtown is going that direction. We need their buy-in and to make sure we are not detracting from what is already in Camrose because a lot of people come from outside of Camrose and Camrose County for the services that are here.” Besides accentuating an already vibrant down-
town area, developing new businesses and services on vacant or under-utilized land will bring in the benefits of more tax levy, a portion of which will go directly back to downtown and indirectly through City services such as policing, public works and infrastructure. The ultimate goal of DARP is to identify what makes a great street and what makes a great neighbourhood. “What is it about downtown that people love so much,” commented Leckie. “Is it the number of businesses, the heritage design, the ease of parking? “The City’s goal is to build on what we have and look at some of those main defining principles which we have done now through our photo inventory studies. We took over 1,000 photos of downtown in October of things that we like, things that we don’t necessarily like and things that work – it will all be vetted through the public in the different public engagements,” concluded Leckie. The process of completing the plan will take time in order for the City to effectively receive feedback and then incorporate it into the plan. For updates and to follow the City blog on the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan, visit the www.camrose.ca/DARP.

Great first-time buyer’s home
By Lori Larsen
This three-bedroom bungalow located close to parks, playgrounds and all the amenities of the west end business sector would make the perfect starter home or a home for someone looking to downsize, but still wanting their own yard. The front entry leads into a cozy living area painted in a warm, trendy palette and has a large front window that saturates the room with natural light. The kitchen has updated countertops and bright white cabinets and adjoins to a perfect dinette area with garden doors leading to a large deck with a canopy and good-sized backyard. The main floor has an updated, stylish four-piece bathroom and three bedrooms including a master suite with its own two-piece en suite. The lower level is completely finished with a wonderful family room where you can curl up and watch movies. Just off the family room is another space that could be used as a home office, gym or could easily be converted
Matthew Mayer into a fourth bedroom. The spacious laundry room contains plenty of storage for seasonal items, tools or crafts. Completing the lower level is a modern three-piece bathroom. The backyard is its own little paradise, completely fenced for privacy with gorgeous mature trees. There is also a secluded barbecue and firepit area, a 22’ x 24’ heated garage (every homeowner’s dream), and a large RV parking pad.
