Select ads in this pre-Christmas edition of The Camrose Booster feature drawings by art class students from Bawlf School. Additional drawings will be seen in next week’s publication as well. We thank each of the students for their co-operation and creativity, as well as teacher Theresa Kruchten for her immense cooperation in overseeing this project. The artistic ability of several students was especially amazing, and we have chosen to use a piece prepared by Kyla Nemeth to welcome readers into this issue. This image, done in ink, is Kyla’s stained glass interpretation of the Holy Family. To all our faithful readers, we wish you a safe, happy and healthy Christmas season.

Letters to the Editor ‘Tis the season
It’s a busy time of year. Besides the usual activities that fill our days, many of us have more special events than usual–parties and concerts and gatherings with friends, family and colleagues. It’s not just the events; it’s all the errands and preparations for the events. Some of us also have more intense work activities related to year-end. For retailers and delivery people, it’s the busiest season of the year, with longer hours and also hopes for a burst of increased revenue to close out the business year. In one of my past careers, the month of December felt surreal. My work involved attending several dozen Christmas celebrations hosted by projects connected to our organization. At the same time, our staff and board were consumed with budget meetings, which were usually not full of laughs or celebration. ***
’Tis the season of children’s concerts and recitals. Since I am no longer responsible for making any of them happen, I love it! For events that happen year after year, it’s fun to see the progress as children grow and mature in their abilities. I’m remembering Christmas concerts past–like the year my toddler granddaughter was on the stage in the front row, lifting her dress over her head so it covered her face, possibly so she couldn’t see the crowd of people looking back. She couldn’t see us, but we got a pretty good view of the tights she was wearing. One year, I got to attend two piano recitals and a concert on the same day, at three different locations. (Fortunately, the locations were close together.) As a grandparent, all I had to do was show up and appreciate. That was easy. One of the parents involved not only had to be present and appreciative of the two children’s events, but also performed in yet a third event. That’s asking a lot of a Sunday afternoon!
Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments.
End of an era
Being out of the community loop for the most part, I was surprised to drive by the CAM-FM office a couple weeks ago to see a nice new vehicle parked out front with the moniker ‘new country 98.1’ plastered on the side. In disbelief, I turned it to our station only to confirm things had changed. I can deal with this, as I subscribe to a streaming service where I can listen to any song at any time...but there is no deny-
ing that the old CAM-FM had it’s own personality, it’s own unique brand that you could always count on, and it will be missed. How will the work day ever be the same when CAMFM classics such as The Hip’s “Boots to Hearts” or Gowan’s “Strange Animal” aren’t there to give you a boost mid way through? Truly, the end of an era for the city and its residents. Bobby Wells, formerly of Camrose
Merry Christmas from your MLA By Kevin Sorenson, MP Battle River- Crowfoot
Merry Christmas Battle River-Crowfoot! Christmas is the time when we celebrate family, friends and faith. The Christian faith is based on Jesus Christ and the events of Christmas and Easter. At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of our Saviour. The events of Easter reveal the promises of resurrection and eternal life. These are times to reflect on our lives, count our blessings, and focus on our spirituality as human beings, even for those not of the Christian faith. For centuries, these times of
reflection and celebration have served to strengthen us and give us hope in our daily lives. Our friends are always important during festive times. Friends can always be counted on to bring us a smile. Often, they are the ones that volunteer to join us in a mission or a job to be done. Their comradery is surely welcome and they add a jovial element. A good friend will lend a hand knowing that the favour will be returned. Sometimes, a listening ear is required and a true friend is there when we need them. There are many people who experience loneliness
during festive times. My prayer is that everyone has the experience of family, friends and faith. From my family to yours, I wish everyone all the blessings of the Christmas holiday season. As your Member of Parliament, I always look forward to coming home from Ottawa to share some holiday cheer with constituents. ’Tis the season of special food. One of my Ukrainian friends makes hundreds of what I think of as “designer pyrogies” (they are amazing!) before Christmas. Many families prepare the twelve traditional Ukrainian dishes for Christmas Eve. My daughter, granddaughter and I look forward to our annual day of making Christmas goodies. A special treat for me is using the shortbread recipe handed down from my grandmother. And there’s always the moment, sometime in the afternoon, when one of us realizes that several hours of eating gobs of raw butter-sugar-chocolate “to see if it’s okay” can create a certain amount of gastrointestinal discomfort. Just this week, after an evening with friends at which we exchanged treats, and in keeping with my practice of eating healthy food in moderation, my “healthy” breakfast included meringue cookies and a homemade chocolate truffle! ***
I’m keenly aware that not everyone has a joyful season. This can be a season of poignant emotions. All the hype, the pressure to buy, buy, buy, the requests for donations, the forced-pretend-happiness, the illusion that everyone is having a good time, can make difficult situations even more painful. I know people who dread this season, who wish it would go away, or who go away themselves so they don’t have to be subjected to it. At this season, we feel more keenly the loss of people we love who are no longer with us. If we’re far from the people we most treasure, the distance seems greater. If we’re having financial pressures, we may feel more stressed. If parts of our lives are less than optimum, if we’re nostalgic for magical feelings we used to have and don’t any more, the contrast between what is and what we wish stands out more sharply. And so, it seems to me, whatever the hype, whatever the hustle and bustle, it’s a season to be gentle and kind–to ourselves as well as to others. It’s a season to remember and be grateful for the real gifts in our lives–the love and the deeper meaning of all those events. *** If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@ BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band to kick-off Big Valley By Murray Green
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will be headlining the Big Valley Jamboree Kickoff Party on Aug. 2. The band has started the party at BVJ a few times over the years. They are one of the most influential bands in the history of country music. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has been performing together for more than 50 years. Their album Will the Circle Be Unbroken has been inducted into the US Library of Congress and the Grammy Hall of Fame. Thomas Rhett will be Friday night’s headliner. His latest album, Life Changes, is an earnest reflection on the life that’s led him to country fame, chronicling the ups and downs of his journey with a contagiously optimistic outlook. His fun and lively on-stage persona will get fans dancing and singing along as he plays the weekend’s party anthems. Alabama has had $75 million in album sales, over 30 records at number one on the Billboard charts, and more than 40 years of redefining the country genre. This only scratches the surface of the influence and success Alabama has had in the world of country music. They will be headlining the Saturday list of artists. They were one of the first acts to fuse country with southern rock, pop, and gospel, and they paved the way for the countless genre-bending artists who have followed in their wake. Florida Georgia Line will be appearing as the Sunday night headliner. Continued on page 16

Nitty Gritty Band at BVJ Continued from page 15
Since their album Dig Your Roots landed at number one on the Billboard charts, they have established themselves as one of the biggest acts in country. BVJ first-timer, Brett Eldredge, will also be appearing Sunday night. He
is known for being a passionate crooner and his vocal style is lifted by the emotional honesty in his music. He’s known by many for his often viral online wit, but most of his fans know and love him for his personal side. This is captured on his recent self-titled album as he dives
deep into love, loss, and the humbler moments in life. After her unfortunate cancellation due to last year’s weather, Jess Moskaluke is back on the main stage Saturday to give her fans a performance. She has been hard at work on her upcoming release Past the Past, featuring the singles “Drive Me Away” and “Kill Your Love,” which has just been released. For almost 30 years, Billy Ray Cyrus has been one of country’s brightest stars, selling millions of albums and charting dozens of timeless back road classics. Since his debut album held the top spot on the Billboard chart for 17 weeks, he’s continued to release hits that have helped shape the sound of modern country. He will appear on stage on Friday. Representing smalltown Alberta, Aaron Goodvin will be returning to Big Valley Jamboree on Saturday afternoon. After he made a name for himself in the local scene, he continued his journey in Nashville, where he collaborated with some of country’s best and made his breakout into the mainstream with his selftitled debut album.

UPCOMING EVENTS Bailey IT’S @LOUGHEEDCENTRE. SEE IT LIVE. CAMROSE LIVE! Central Agencies Cabaret Series honours volunteers Free Every Other Weekend By Lori Larsen
In a show of appreciation for all the contributions of staff, board members, volunteers, theatre attendees and local media, the Bailey Theatre held its annual Appreciation Evening at the Bailey Theatre on Dec. 12. Guests were treated to a light meal and refreshments served in the quaint atmosphere of The Metal Kettle. Board director Colleen Nelson began by thanking everyone for attending the event. “It is just great to have us all here as the Bailey family.” President of the Bailey board David Francoeur identified Bailey board members present at the event and, on behalf of the board, gave thanks to Bailey volunteers, generous donors, the hardworking operations and management team and the Camrose media. “Thank you for your valuable dedication and effort towards keeping this beautiful historic theatre open, allowing the public to experience a myriad of arts and culture for Camrose and area. “Whether your donation is your time or your hard-earned money, the fact that you have chosen to contribute to the Bailey is amazing and reaffirms and galvanizes the board’s commitment to maintain support in this Camrose landmark.” In thanking all the volunteers who continually ensure the success, Nelson related some statistics. “We have approximately 113 volunteers on our volunteer roster. The number of hours worked up until Nov. 5 was 4,573.5 volunteer hours. That is up 500 hours from last year.” After a brief explanation about the many roles and duties of the volunteers at the Bailey, Nelson congratulated the volunteer of the year, Marian Williams. Marian’s name was added to the Bailey Theatre Spotlights of Volunteer of the Year plaque. Marian is the volunteer coordinator for the Bailey, with the daunting task of ensuring there are enough volunteers at each event. Visit the Bailey Theatre website at www.baileytheatre.com/ to learn more about upcoming events, making donations and how you can become a volunteer at the Bailey.

Handel’s Messiah appears By Murray Green
Handel’s Messiah will be appearing through the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra on Friday, Dec. 22 at 7 p.m. in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. Messiah is an Englishlanguage oratorio composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel, with a scriptural text compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible, and from the version of the Psalms included with the Book of Common Prayer. It was first performed in Dublin on April 13, 1742 and received its London premiere nearly a year later. After an initially modest public reception, the oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the best known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. “It’s great to come back to Camrose. They have a good musical program at Augustana and the community is appreciative of music,” said Claude Lapalme, the conductor of the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra. “Every year, we present a show at this time of year with one of our groups that we work with. This year it is Rosa Barocca. We have coproductions.” Handel’s immortal masterpiece will be performed on period instruments by Alberta’s Rosa Barocca and a handpicked group of Alberta singers. “The repertoire is from an earlier time, before 1750. We play on copies of instruments from that time period. The violins look the same,
but the shape of the bow is different. We use gut strings instead of steel strings. The oboes look like recorders with reeds in them and the trumpets don’t have valves. We do up the concert hard core, like it was first created and performed. The symphony goes through the trials and resurrection, so it can be played at Christmas or Easter,” Claude explained. “It includes a magical nativity scene, so performing at Christmas time in a North American tradition.” The Red Deer Symphony Orchestra has to blend with the choir. “We come together yearly in a series called Early Music Voices in Calgary, so we do play with the old instruments with a choir. The challenge is for Rosa Barocca to have people who are very interested in this old style of music and to have experience in this kind of performance. Some musicians do it full time, but some don’t and you have to make sure everyone is on the same page. The challenge lies with getting those who do it full time with those who only do it part time. We are learning
all of the time and this is a good way to learn and be challenged musically.” Together with musicians and singers, they will have about 36 people on stage. “The symphony was founded in 1987 as a part- time professional orchestra. That means musicians are hired per concert and we perform six or seven per year,” explained Claude, who has been with the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra since 1990. “In the past, we haven’t gone outside of Red Deer too often, but we are extremely excited to play in Camrose again because it is a musical place. You always want to give 100 per cent, but when music is appreciated as much as it will be in Camrose, we have to give 120 per cent.” Red Deer Symphony Orchestra had the honour of being the first professional orchestra to play at the Lougheed Centre last year. In Part 1, the Messiah’s coming and the virgin birth are predicted by the Old Testament prophets. The annunciation to the shepherds of the birth of the Christ is represented in the words of Luke’s gospel. After a brief intermission, Part 2 covers Christ’s passion and his death, his resurrection and ascension, the first spreading of the gospel through the world, and a definitive statement of God’s glory summarized in the Hallelujah. Part 3 begins with the promise of redemption, followed by a prediction of the day of judgment and the general resurrection, ending with the final victory over sin and death and the acclamation of Christ.

The automotive section of
Burnstad grabbed Cougar convertible from the States By Murray Green
Rob Burnstad, formerly of Round Hill, enjoyed driving a 1969 Mercury Cougar when he was younger. After selling it, he searched for a similar car to honour his memories. What he found was a 1970 Mercury Cougar XR-7 convertible. “This is one of about 1,750 made, so it is very rare. There are only three for sale right now across North America,” he said last fall. He found it in Colorado and decided to drive it back to the area. “I had a 1969 Cougar and really enjoyed driving it around the area. I sold the 1969 and then bought this one because it was rare.” The Mercury Cougar is a nameplate applied to a diverse series of automobiles sold by Mercury from 1967 to 1997, and again from 1999 to 2002. While most examples were produced as two-door coupes, at various times throughout its production life, the Cougar was also sold as a convertible, fourdoor sedan, station wagon and hatchback. “It has a 351 Windsor motor with two barrels. It is just a solid car. It has the original motor, a small block engine, but the Windsor was more popular than the Cleveland back then. This was the luxury Mustang, basically. It started out more of a gentleman’s car. It had more options like the power top,” said Rob. During its production life, as was common practice within the Mercury division, the Cougar shared much of its underpinnings with a Ford counterpart. At the time of its introduction, it was based upon the Ford Mustang, to which Rob eluded. “It is fun driving a rag top. I always loved old cars ever since I was a young boy. I redid the motor, but it needs some body work. For now I’m going to drive it, but I may sell it as well.” For many years, the Cougar was important to the image of the Mercury division; advertising often identified its dealers as being at the sign of the cat. In the early 1970s as part of advertising for the Cougar and Mercury, female models often held big cats on
COUGAR COUNTRY
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Rob Burnstad enjoys driving his 1970 Mercury Cougar convertible around the countryside near Round Hill and in Edmonton. The Cougar started out as a sidekick to the Ford Mustang and put a little roar into the Mercury line-up.
leashes. In production for 34 years, the Cougar nameplate is second only to the Grand Marquis in its longevity in the Mercury model line. “I’m going to drive it in a wedding and just enjoy the car. I put sequential lights in this car. I put the electronic system in and could put in LED lights. I put in an MP3 player, but it looks like old style.” The introduction of the Cougar finally gave Mercury its own pony car. Slotted between the Ford Mustang and the Ford Thunderbird, the Cougar was the performance icon and eventually the icon for the Mercury name for several decades. The Cougar was available in two models (base and XR-7) and only came in one body style (a two-door hardtop, no centre or B-pillar). The Cougar continued to be a Mustang twin for seven years and could be optioned as a muscle car. However, the focus continued away from performance and toward luxury, evolving it into a plush
pony car. The signs were becoming clear as early as 1970, when special options styled by fashion designer Pauline Trigère appeared, a houndstooth-patterned vinyl roof and matching upholstery, available together or separately. A facelift in 1971 did away with the hidden headlights and hidden wipers were adopted. Between 1969 and 1973, Cougar convertibles were offered. For 1970, the Cougar appearance was similar to the 1969 model, but changes were made. A new front end featured a pronounced centre hood extension and electric shaver grille similar to the 1967 and 1968 Cougars. Mandated locking steering columns appeared inside, and high-backed bucket seats, similar to those included in the 1969 Eliminator package, became standard on all Cougars. Other changes included revised taillight bezels, new front bumper and front fender extensions, and larger, recessed side mark-
ers. The upgraded décor interior and styled steel wheels, standard ‘69 Eliminator equipment, were moved to the options list for the 1970 Eliminator. No Eliminator convertibles were factory
produced in either 1969 or 1970. New options for the 1970 Cougar were interior upholstery and vinyl top in bold houndstooth check patterns.

Protecting consumers purchasing or repairing vehicles By Murray Green
The proposed A Better Deal for Consumers and Businesses Act would better protect Albertans buying or repairing a vehicle, by increasing the accountability and transparency of the automotive industry. If passed, the bill would help build a trusted marketplace where consumers are confident they are getting their money’s worth and where businesses can grow and compete fairly. “When Albertans buy a car or have theirs repaired, they deserve to have a straightforward experience. These changes would help Albertans make more informed decisions, protect
their pocketbook and value the work of Alberta’s many trustworthy automotive businesses,” said Stephanie McLean, minister of Service Alberta. Changes could include requiring automotive businesses to disclose important vehicle information to consumers, such as vehicle history; requiring a standard bill of sale for automotive sales; establishing minimum warranty protections for repairs and requiring repair shops to provide written estimates, upon request, to consumers prior to beginning work. “AMA has a long tradition of exceptional standards and commitment
to consumer protection with our Approved Auto Repair Service program, which includes 380 repair facilities across Alberta. AMA supports this legislation because, although most repair shops in the
province are committed to quality service, we believe all Albertans should have confidence in the service they’re receiving,” said Jeff Kasbrick, vice-president of government and stakeholder relations, Alberta Motor Association. The bill would also strengthen public oversight of Alberta’s auto regulator, the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC), by transitioning AMVIC into a public agency. This would make AMVIC more responsive to consumers by ensuring it follows the same rules of transparency and accountability as the rest of Alberta’s agencies, boards and commissions.
“I am very excited about the announcement of Bill 31, A Better Deal for Consumers and Businesses Act. It is a very important step to support AMVIC’s mandate of consumer protection in Alberta,” said Bill Burnett, chair, AMVIC board of directors. AMVIC is responsible for providing consumer protection in the motor vehicle industry. In addition to licensing businesses and salespeople and ensuring there’s a fair marketplace for consumers and businesses, AMVIC is responsible for investigating violations of consumer protection laws.

Break and enter at Catholic church construction site Dec. 15
Two break and enters occurred overnight. The new Catholic church construction site was broken into and approximately $20,000 worth of tools were stolen. The second theft
was in the industrial area where the suspects stole $7,000 worth of tools from a business. Camrose police were contacted just before 11 a.m., to attend the fitness centre at the Recre-
ation Centre where a person reported his wallet and truck keys stolen from his locker. One of the suspects purchased a day pass to enter the fitness centre and then used bolt cutters to cut the lock from the locker.
After stealing a wallet and keys they, then attended the victim’s residence with the intent to commit a break and enter and theft from the home. Before entering they knocked on the door and were greeted by the
victim’s spouse. The male then pretended to be at the wrong address and left. Soon after, one of the suspects used the stolen credit card to make a purchase at a convenience store using the card’s tap feature.

Childhood Christmas gifts that will never be forgotten By Lori Larsen
Maybe it was a toy train set, or a doll that cried “mama”, or maybe a book of amazing tales or set of wooden blocks – whatever the gift, it’s the one that you will never forget and may even still have tucked away in a treasure trove. Waking up on Christmas morning as a child, after an exhausting battle of trying to stay awake to catch old St. Nick, then running to the tree to see what surprises await, is a familiar memory for many. If parents weren’t already awake, the anticipation could be enough to drive an otherwise sweet child to resort to desperate measures, opening gifts without them or go jumping on their bed. Either way, the end result is a frenzy of giftwrap tearing, bows flying and the oohs and aahs of discovery. City of Camrose manager Malcolm Boyd fondly remembers one of his favourite childhood gifts, the Evel Knievel wind-up rocket bike. “I had hours of fun building ramps,” he recollected. Perhaps that little daredevil on a motorcycle was what tweaked Malcolm’s grown-up interest in motorcycles. Camrose Public Library director Deb Cryderman quickly recalled a gift that gave her great joy as a child. “My favourite gift as a child was a very fancy doll (dressed in a taffeta tartan, a dress that I envied). The special thing
Special childhood presents from the past make a lasting impression.
about the doll was that when you pulled her ponytail (she had brown hair like mine, not blonde hair like so many other dolls), her hair grew longer, and when you pressed a button on her back, it got shorter. It delighted me to no end.” Camrose Primary Care Network director, Stacey Strilchuk, was thrilled as a child with her highlysought-after gift. “My favourite Christmas gift as a child was an Oilers jersey when I was nine years old. My uncle went searching everywhere for one–it was the ‘80s when Oiler swag was super popular and not so easy to find as it is nowadays!”
For Central Agencies real estate agent Matt Banack, the best gift as a child, and even to this day, is the exhilaration of the whole season. “I think every year was special in the fact that all gifts at the different ages of my life were always a thrill and wonderful at that moment. The things that I always found that were exciting in my childhood was the buildup to Christmas. The thought that we were about to set the tree up and that Christmas season was finally here. The countdown to Christmas and the buildup that Santa was going to be coming. Every day closer
to Christmas was always exciting.” Matt added. “Just spending the days and Christmas day with family and your favorite cousins was just exciting. Even when Christmas was over, I always thought I couldn’t wait till next year. Now, as a dad and having two young boys, I still get excited for Christmas. The enjoyment for my boys is identical to my own experience when I was a boy. My little guys love Christmas as much as I once did and I love every minute of that! To my family, this time of year is special and I hope my kids one day can enjoy the excitement of their own children and the happi-
ness Christmas brings for them.” Camrose Booster writer Murray Green remembers how his favourite Christmas gift actually improved his math skills. “In 1971, I received a baseball game. It not only inspired my love for baseball, but helped me reach top grades in my math class. “I don’t think my parents realized at the time how much that gift would impact my life, even today.” As for me, my favourite Christmas gift was a large, somewhat unconventional bright yellow stuffed dog (poodle to be exact), which I promptly named Pierre Dog. Because it was too big for my parents to wrap, they left it in their bedroom Christmas morning. I remember thinking I couldn’t have been a very good girl that year because Santa forgot me, as my older brothers and sister eagerly unwrapped their gifts. Trying my best not to cry, I sat with my stocking goodies when my eldest brother emerged from my parents’ room with this incredibly big, bright stuffed poodle. Pretty sure Pierre Dog never left my side for months. As a child, we remember the gift and the hours of joy it brought us, but as we grow older, we come to realize that some gifts we received may very well have had a hidden agenda.

André R. Black, known around the Camrose area as André Schwartz, created his first book in The Lion Roared series called FREEDOM: Conformity is Selfimposed Slavery. As the title suggests, André challenges people to think outside the box about life. It is a fiction story, but is intended for readers to broaden their thinking and enjoy life to the fullest. Take a life journey with André. He says nobody born into the prison of society’s ruling knows liberty. He asks us to breakout of conformity and embark on a journey with Helana, Gábor, Leo and friends on a wild, paradigm-shifting and breathtaking saga of personal growth. “No lasting changes have ever been successful by imposing rules and laws onto others by force. Beliefs have nothing to do with facts and facts will not change to accommodate beliefs,” said André. “There are thousands of ways to arrive at a point. None is right or wrong because it’s the perception that makes it right or wrong in the eyes of an observer and every person has his or her own. If you change perception, then values can be reversed.” Every thought deserves an audience. “My aim is to remain neutral and be a witness to events without taking sides and just observe what is happening, allowing myself to be entertained.” André loves to teach, sailing, martial arts, archery, the art of living, and often talks a lot about philosophy. Before calling Camrose his home, he travelled single-handed around in the South Pacific on a sailing vessel for 17 years

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Camrose author questions human freedom in new book.
and made his living wherever he went. On those long, lonely journeys, he came up with ideas to write about. His first attempt at writing is published with Trafford Publishing and available on Amazon under the title Oceanborne Madness, a collection of 21 short stories and has now switched to sci-fi in which he shares his vision of a world that could live in a harmonious and symbiotic relationship based on sharing versus owning. The Lion Roared series is based on a fictional character. But motives and ideas are based on human encoun-
ters mixed with the author’s views. In the book, Helana and Gábor produce a child named Leo, who metamorphoses into a lion at age six. This creates drama until it is discovered that he displays signs of superior intelligence. The couple want to leave Leo on an secluded island, but a scuffle sends Leo overboard. What they don’t know is that Leo can read minds. A search finds Leo and the man who discovers the truth about him. They want to silence this man, but then met a beautiful doctor and
her mystic daughter that adhere to the old Polynesian ways of sharing. “Polynesian people enjoy what they have and are happy to work for $5 a day. Western people go over there and tell them this isn’t right and try to change their ways to the point where they are no longer happy. Who are we to tell them what makes people happy or unhappy and they need to followour ideas and not their own,” said André. “They like to share everything with everyone. If someone comes up with a better system to make coffee, they share with others. Here, people will try to gain financially before sharing with others. Canadians tend to share and help others. I love Camrose for that. You don’t find that south of the border to the same extent.” André wants everyone to think for themselves and
he gets that message across in his book. “You hear the news on television and you choose want you want to believe, but what you believe is not necessarily the truth, nor what is forced on you to believe.” Ride the journey of his story involving a polyamory love triangle. “The gods or aliens we’re looking for to rescue humanity from self-created problems are not out there. They are inside of each one of us, waiting to be released and become active. The potential is in all of us to change the world for the better, individually.” This book is available at Books For You in Duggan Mall. It is intended for mature audiences.

CARRIERS 2017 has been an amazing year for the Carrier Team at the Booster. We’ve had some very interesting weather to contend with that pushed our carriers to the limits of their patience. Frozen steps, delivering in the dark, icy sidewalks, seemingly hurricane force winds and yet each and every route managed to be completed by the end of the day. Seeing the November temperatures rise to above zero has been a welcomed sight. The Christmas Season allows me time to reflect back on our list of 41 carriers and their many personalities. Our team is really comprised of such a diverse mix of young, adult and seasoned individuals. Their reasons for working with us range from extra income, needing the exercise, to simply wanting an inclusive family activity. One family team has been with us for over 30 years, spanning three generations! While the faces sometimes change over the years, one thing will always remain consistent with our carriers, our overwhelming appreciation of their efforts. For without carriers, we would not have a paper to read and we would miss all the good sales! Please take the time this season to thank your carrier if you see them out braving the cold weather to come. And on behalf of the Camrose Booster Carrier Team, we wish each and every one of our readers a very safe, happy and healthy Christmas.

In spite of the fact that our carriers call at each residence in Camrose at least twice a week, many householders never see them. Christmas tree tips for the holiday season By Murray Green
Choosing a Christmas tree isn’t just about going out and chopping down a tree. You may want to measure the height and width of the area where the tree will be displayed. Most cultivated Christmas trees tend to have an 80 per cent taper. This means that a tree that is two metres tall will be approximately 1.6 metres wide (7’ tall will be 5’ 6” wide) at the bottom. Some species of trees have more open foliage, stiffer branches or longer needles. You may also want to have an idea of your decorating theme before you pick your tree. Select the tree that suits your decorations and space. Alberta Agriculture and Forestry suggests to visit the Christmas Tree Species web page that provides information about the characteristics of different species of trees that are sold as Christmas trees. Look for a retail lot that keeps its Christmas trees fresh in a protected area. If you like to wait for Christmas Eve to decorate your tree, store the tree in a cool place, out of the wind and rain, until it is ready to be brought indoors. You could place a tree moving bag under your tree, ready to be drawn up around the tree to make disposal easy in January. Ensure your tree stand is large enough to hold four litres (one gallon) of water as well as the trunk of the tree. When bringing the tree indoors, cut 1 to 2 cm (about a half to three-quarters of an inch) off the tree stump before placing it in water. The cut must be no more than four hours old, otherwise sap will seal the cut and prevent the water from rising, thus drying out the tree. The first water fill should be with very warm water enabling the sap to flow readily. As the tree thaws, water will be drawn upwards replenishing the moisture to the extremities. No additives are required. Have a family member top up the water twice daily so the base of the tree never dries out. Your tree will drink several litres of water every day for the first couple of weeks. After the holidays, wrap the entire tree in the moving bag, and bring everything outside, including the stand, which can be easily removed once the tree is outdoors and on its side.

Camrose is a great place to retire. There is good access to senior communities and healthcare, and the city is generally peaceful, quiet and has a relatively low crime rate. Because of this, Camrose has a higher number of seniors than most cities in Alberta. According to the most recent census, the population of Camrose consists of 18.7 per cent people over the age of 65, compared to the provincial average of just 11.9 per cent. But calling Camrose a “retirement community” would fail to acknowledge the city’s vibrant and wellestablished youth culture. The things that make Camrose a great place for seniors, along with sports, schools, concerts and job opportunities, make Camrose a good destination for young people as well. But even though a 16-year-old and a 60-year-old may have lived in the same place their whole lives, their cultures are entirely different. These cultural differences have the potential to cause tension and disdain between these two groups. As a teenager, I was both loved and hated by the seniors of Camrose, depending on what day of the week it was. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I delivered the local paper to a 55-plus community. I was polite, respectful and hardworking. The seniors often smiled and said, “hi”, even chatted with me, or offered me a glass of water on warm days. But then came Friday. I loved skateboarding, and there was a very good skate spot in another 55-plus community that my friends and I enjoyed going to every Friday evening. As a skate-
boarder, I was seen as rebellious, lazy and disrespectful to authority. Several seniors driving by would stop to yell at me, saying, “You’re not welcome here.” Even though I never did anything illegal, the police were called several times by the residents, requesting that I not be allowed to return. I was representative of the archetypal dichotomy of old people’s perception of young people in Camrose. Young people are seen as either a mild-mannered, wellintentioned “Charlie Brown”, or a dissident, anarchist “Bart Simpson”. Old people tend to look favourably upon a “Charlie Brown”, and negatively upon a “Bart Simpson”. Bart Simpson is terrible for social capital. In order to develop a more positive view of these cultures separated by age, increased exposure to positive interactions is extremely beneficial. Young people and old people can’t be continually segregated and only interact to complain or make fun of one another. When teaching history in schools, why not have a guest speaker who actually lived it? Students should have field trips to seniors’ homes. There should be school initiatives to educate children on how to respect the elderly, and young people should be educated on understanding of the effects of old age and the value of every person, regardless of age. Many young people complain that seniors walk too slow, are a drain on the economy, or are useless. It’s important to realize that the efforts of seniors is what built this great city that you enjoy. The majority of the houses,
schools, roads and businesses in Camrose were built by people who are now seniors. And, of course, they get a pension and old age security. They have spent their entire lives contributing to the economy; they have more than earned the right to spend their later years enjoying the result of their efforts. Everyone gets old someday. If young people begin cre-
ating a culture of respect now, by the time they are seniors they will, in turn, benefit from that. Decreasing negative stereotypes on both sides can be done by acknowledging the good actions of the majority, decreasing generalizations, increasing positive interactions, and being educated and understanding of one another.

Passion for the arts and community By Lori Larsen
Art touches our lives in so many ways and through so many mediums. It has the capacity to help us see the world through diversity and different perspectives. For City of Camrose arts director Jane CherryLemire, her work with art and bringing the arts to Camrose goes far beyond that of a job. It is not what she does, but who she is and is apparently a great source of joy and pride for her. “I moved to (Montreal) Canada from England in 1976. My mom moved there with us four children, by herself,” said Jane commending her mother’s strength and courage. “I was bullied in England and so, for me, it was a no brainer (moving to Canada). I said, ‘Let’s go.’ ” As a result of extreme seasickness on the boat over to Canada, Jane lost a lot of weight. “So I was able to shed a part of myself. I not only got to leave the bullying behind, but left the weight behind as well and got to start over fresh.” Despite a new start in a new country, Jane’s soon-tobe journey was riddled with a host of challenges resulting in some emotional and physical struggles. After graduation from high school, she moved to Edmonton to apprentice in a beauty salon but, in order to make ends meet, also worked at a restaurant. In trying to keep her head above water, she unfortunately experienced a devastating health setback. “When my mom came out to visit (and make sure Jane was okay), we were travelling back to Edmonton and passed through Camrose. We saw the swans on the lake which very much reminded us of England and, right then and there, decided to move to Camrose.” Still somewhat unsettled, Jane went back and forth between Montreal and Camrose until she became pregnant with her first daughter. “I had my daughter in Montreal, but really felt like I needed family support, so moved back to Camrose.” Another move back to Montreal saw Jane having her second and third daughters. “The relationship (with the father) didn’t work out and I found myself a single mom living on welfare,” said Jane with little trepidation. “I think it is good for people to know even when life gets rough, you can rise above that and your life can become a lot better.” With three daughters, very little work skills and faced with soon being incomeless, Jane made a brave,
albeit life-changing decision. She enrolled in University of Alberta Augustana Campus Studio Arts program. “I always had an interest in art, but never thought of it as anything more than what I liked.” But life had a funny way of showing her differently and she has never looked back. Graduating with distinction from Augustana, she was able to work her way into the position of City arts director looking after the arts and recreation program.
to, not only the arts, but building strong community bonds, the Arts Centre continues to thrive and grow. “The Art Society has been around since 1979 doing some fantastic things,” said Jane which includes offering courses which have expanded from around 12 classes per session to 50 to 60 now. Aside from keeping the Arts Centre bustling with excitement, Jane is responsible for, along with the Arts Society and the

Merry Christmas Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster City of Camrose Arts director Jane Cherry-Lemire, pictured here holding a piece displayed in one of the many art exhibits available throughout the year, is a strong advocate of promoting emerging artists.
“The Chuck MacLean Arts Centre opened in 1995,” explained Jane. “The Arts Society was running the Centre at that time, which was in the older building located where the parking lot for the Centre is now.” Through a vision and a generous offer by Wild Rose Co-op Food Store, Camrose, the Arts Centre was relocated to its existing location in the basement of the Co-op store. As a result of keeping rent affordable, groups such as the Academy of Dance can stay viable and continue to succeed in Camrose. When the Arts Society realized that running the centre was too much for a volunteer group, they approached the City with the suggestion of hiring an executive director. “I was hired on contract basis to run the Centre and continue working with the Arts Society. After a year, they decided to turn it into a full-time position. Now I am a City employee, but part of my job description is to work with the Camrose Arts Society to help facilitate programming and special events.” Under Jane’s dedication
City of Camrose, organizing numerous community events including the Art Walk (which has been in existence for 22 years), the Summer Arts Program, Art in the Park, Jaywalkers’ Jamboree entertainment (in partnership with the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce), Canada Day Celebrations, National Indigenous Day, this year the Canada 150 celebrations, in conjunction with many annual events, and ringing in the New Year with a fantastic Light Up the Night Event, to name a few. “I am the sort of person that when somebody plants a seed (idea), I grab it and start growing it in different directions.” Jane is passionate about bringing the arts to the community and bringing the community to the arts. “I strongly believe in building community and helping people come together. Whether that means families, friends or strangers. That is my motivation. I guess, if anything, I am involved in making a difference in some ones l life, that makes a difference in my life.”

Woman refuses to pay bar tabs Dec. 15
A local bar contacted Camrose Police when a female was refusing to pay for her $18 tab. Police attended and identified the female who had just left another local bar where she failed to pay her $90 tab. Police checks on
the female indicated that she had an outstanding warrant out of Fox Creek for the same offence. The 37-year-old was arrested and charged with obtaining food by fraud. A red 2003 F350 Ford truck was stolen while parked at the rear of a
residence on 49 Street in the 5200 block. The theft occurred between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 2 a.m. Dec. 14
Police responded to 54 Avenue in the 6100 block after a vehicle left the roadway and collided with
a tree. The male driver was arrested on scene and transported to police headquarters where he provided two samples of his breath that were both over the legal limit. The 28-year-old was charged with impaired driving and dangerous driving. Police attended a residence on 51 Avenue regarding a male who was causing issues. The intoxicated male was on conditions not to consume alcohol, not to be at the residence and had a warrant for his arrest originating from Lethbridge. During his arrest police also located a quantity of cannabis marijuana.
The 32-year-old was charged with four counts of breaching his conditions and one count of possession of a controlled substance. Police mediated a family situation involving a child who was out of control and being aggressive with her mother. After a considerable amount of time at the residence police were able to mediate the situation. Dec. 13
A 2004 Ford F250 stolen from a residence in Camrose on Nov. 26 was recovered near the intersection of Highway 21 and Highway 611.

Christmas at the library Savouring traditions
This year, we welcomed in the next generation of lefse makers. For the first time, all three of my children were busy rolling, flipping and sampling rejects at our much beloved annual “Lefse Fest” event at my parents’ home. My daughter didn’t take a single break, and tried out each of the work stations. My six-year-old tried his hand at rolling, but took particular delight in the sampling department. My three-year-old was rolling, and even remembered to flip and add flour! This year my sister-in-law’s parents were in town, so Lefse Fest was held early to include them in the tradition. It was just fun, the kind of day where you go home and say “wasn’t that a great day?” Lefse Fest is a tradition that I love, but there are other parts of Christmas that need to go. A few years back, my mom and I each decided which kind of cookie we will bake and then share with each other. At some point, maybe we will switch, so she doesn’t tire of mudballs entirely! My Gran made Nanaimo bars from scratch, which I have tackled occasionally. This year, I looked at the ingredient list and my eye started to twitch at the thought of going from aisle to aisle looking for the very specific ingredients. Egads, why am I putting myself through this when I don’t find the store bought variety tastes much different? And the squares from the store come with lines for cutting for added simplicity. Done and done. Homemade Nanaimo bars were scratched from the list. Next I began wrapping for an early Christmas celebration we are having with my husband’s family. Typically, I wrap the calendars for each aunt and uncle and then tie a decorative ribbon around. My heart started to feel anxious–I mean, Survivor was about to start! Then I thought…just because I have always done that doesn’t mean I have to continue. No ribbons! Ha ha! I felt a strange lightness at making the task simpler. Okay, I think I need to say that again…make tasks simpler. Simplicity is where it is at! Then I thought through the menu for the weekend with family. I realized that I am awful at accepting help. This is the season to accept help! I rescinded my previous reply of “no, don’t bring anything” to “can you bring a bottle of wine (or salad/appetizer/Christmas baking)?” If people want to help, let them. As my Grandma always said, “Many hands make light work”. As I reviewed my Christmas to-do list (buy presents, send Christmas letters, decorate house, make gingerbread house, wrap presents) to gauge how each category was coming along, I realized that I am a hypocrite. I have told my children that the holiday season is about spending time with family, helping others and celebrating the birth of Jesus. Yet I am getting eye twitches and being cross with my children when they leave their toques at the store because my brain is continually reviewing how the presents, letters and wrapping is coming along. There is something else taboo at Christmas time that everyone, myself included, has got to stop: asking people if they are all ready for Christmas! Nothing induces more panic than this statement, because it implies that we really should be ready by now. I was asked at Midnight Madness if I was done my baking and my heart skipped a beat because I hadn’t started! I promptly went home that night and made butterscotch confection, dough for gingerbread men, and wrote my Christmas letter. Obviously, not making Nanaimo bars and skipping ribbons on my wrapping isn’t going to save me copious amounts of time. But it gets the ball rolling in remembering to save time for what’s important and that elbowing someone out of the way to get that last gift on the shelf is not keeping with the Christmas spirit. I haven’t done this, but I can get pretty competitive. (It took everything I had not to start running when they opened the doors for the used bike sale in the spring). These little steps will hopefully help me to keep in mind that less is more, much more this holiday season.

Kodiaks ride out the Storm
JOY, LOVE, PEACE AND HARMONY
By Murray Green
The Camrose Kodiaks blanked the Grand Prairie Storm 6-0 as the team played a nearly perfect game on Dec. 17. On offence, Brock Bremer led the charge with two goals as he scored both the opening tally and the final marker. Kyler Kupka, and Zach Vinnell scored in the middle frame to give the Kodiaks a 3-0 lead. Nic Correale and Carson Welke added to the total before Bremer garnered his second of the game. Goalie Luke Lush stopped all 19 shots he faced to record the shutout. Camrose fired 43 shots at the Storm. Camrose pushed the Olds Grizzlys into overtime, but came out on the wrong end of a 6-5 score on Dec. 12. The teams played even in the first two periods with scores of 2-2 and 4-4. Kyler Kupka led the offence with a hat trick after Matt Dykstra started the scoring. In the third frame, Carson Welke put the Kodiaks in front until the last minute when Olds tied the game with 13 seconds left. The Grizzlys collected the extra point in overtime. Griffin Bowerman started the game in the Camrose net, stopping seven of 10 shots. Luke Lush came in relief to turn away 22 of 25 shots. Camrose fired 46 shots at the Olds’ cage. The Kodiaks were victorious in overtime with a 3-2 win over the Canmore Eagles on Dec. 19. Brock Bremer netted the winner, while Carson Welke and Dykstra scored in the third period. Canmore had a 2-0 lead midway through the third frame. Goalie Bowerman stopped 24 of 26 shots, while the Kodiaks had 36 shots on goal. Earlier the Kodiaks grounded the Eagles 3-2 in regulation time. Kupka, Matt Gervais and Jacob Kendall added the tallies for the Kodiaks. Bowerman turned away 25 of 27 shots, while Camrose recorded 39 shots on goal. The Kodiaks will be

Remembering with Love
I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below, with tiny lights like Heaven’s stars reflecting on the snow. The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away a tear, for I am spending Christmas with Jesus this year. I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, but the sound of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir up here. I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring, for it is beyond description to hear the angels sing. I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart, but I am not so far away, we really aren’t apart. So be happy for me, dear ones, you know I hold you dear, and be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I send you a special gift from my heavenly home above, I send you a dear memory of my true undying love. After all, love is the pure gift, more precious than pure gold. It always was important in the stories Jesus told. Please love and keep each other as my Father said to do, For I can’t count the blessings or the love He has for you. So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear. Remember, I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. This is my gift to anyone who needs a little boost this season. I hope it makes this Christmas just a bit easier for you. Merry Christmas! ~ Santa

Are all BRCF funds the same?
No! The Foundation offers seven different types of funds, one of which can certainly be tailored to suit your personal philanthropy needs. The most general type is a “Community Fund”, which allows the BRCF Grants Committee of the day to choose projects that address emerging needs throughout the area served.

Protect your pets By Lori Larsen
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose Open Door executive director Jessica Hutton, left, and case manager Wayne Wilson are happy to introduce the newest member of the Open Door, Moose.
Four legged support for Open Door By Lori Larsen
The Camrose Open Door is excited to welcome the newest addition to their team of support, and he comes just in the nick of time, during a season when stress can be at an all-time high. Welcome Moose, the two-year-old Shepherd/ Akita rescue dog whose tail literally does circles when you pet him. Moose is a support dog who will eventually be trained as a therapy dog. He has been brought on board The Open Door team to assist with not only the youth and young adults who may require assistance, but also to lend emotional and compassionate support to the staff of The Open Door. “We have had a few situations recently where we thought we really need to have a dog here,” said Open Door executive director Jessica Hutton. “It is something I have wanted to have in the works for a while. Of course, we do work with Lucy (Victim Services Service Dog) but Lucy is busy. She is in high demand and we know she is getting subpoenaed out to places now, so we don’t have that access every day. The timing was just right.” Hutton began the process of looking for a support dog a short while ago, figuring it would take some time before finding the perfect fit. “I was shocked at how fast the right one came along. Moose was dropped in our lap.” After searching mul-
tiple sites and places looking for a dog who would fit the criteria for both The Open Door clients and the staff, Hutton came across Moose’s profile online. “I thought his profile looked really interesting, so I telephoned the Central Alberta Humane Society (CAHS) in Red Deer.” After explaining her situation to the staff member at the Humane Society, Hutton was referred to the Shelter manager. “The manager said they had the perfect dog for our purpose,” said Hutton, delighted that the dog they were suggesting was Moose. “The manager said they (staff at CAHS) knew he was very special because they had matched Moose with other dogs to help stabilize them before they were adopted. He was even playing in the front with the staff. “When we went down and met him, we knew instantaneously he was the one. He came in and sat down and we patted him then he laid right down on his back and we rubbed his belly.” Apparently, Moose knew as well that this was his lot in life. “He smiled for his first picture,” added Hutton with a bit of grin herself. Now settling into his new digs, Moose hangs out during the day at The Open Door office greeting everyone with a wag of a tail, cool nose rub and, almost certainly, a doggie smile. “He is also very helpful for our staff. We deal with
a lot of heavy issues all day and having Moose here for us is just such a nice help. “You can be sitting at your desk and he comes up and puts his head on your lap and you get to pat him for a bit. It is just good pet therapy having him around,” said Jessica with an all-knowing smile. In the evenings, Moose goes back to the Shelter and lives there, offering comfort and support to the individuals living at the shelter. “We have seen him do some good work already. He is super good at going out, walking up to people and being very gentle about his approach and doing that little bit of help where he can. “Moose is sponsored by Global Pet Foods which is obviously a massive help to us,” noted Hutton “If anyone is interested in donating to the Moose fund to help support him, we are very open to that. Global has taken care of the food, but he will need toys, will have vet bills and will need pet insurance–any of that type of thing.” At the end of the interview, Moose graciously posed for the camera. While he may not have offered up a big doggie grin, his warm brown eyes were all the indication needed to know this is one pup who has found his purpose in life. The colder weather is hard on many things, our vehicles, our homes, our bodies and of course our beloved furry friends–our pets. Here are a few cold winter tips on how to keep your pet safe and happy. If it is too cold for you, it is most likely too cold for your pet. Despite some pets having thick fur coats, the pads of their feet and the sensitive area on their nose, ears and tail can very quickly become uncomfortable in colder temperatures and are more prone to frostbite. Opt for quick outdoor bathroom breaks. Consider the age of your pet. Older pets may be more susceptible to the cold. Short-coated pets may have a lower tolerance than those with longer thicker fur and, if possible, avoid short haircuts in the colder months. It is important to make sure your pet is getting exercise and this is often a great benefit to our own physical fitness; however, when walking your pet or letting them outside, be sure to check on them frequently. Remove any buildup of snow or ice between their paw pads. Be extra careful when allowing them on surfaces that have been salted or coated with ice removal chemicals; and ensure you clean their fur and paws afterwards to avoid them licking the harmful substances. Keep your pet hydrated. This is just as important in the dry cold months as it is in hot weather. If your pet is an outdoor pet,
make sure you remove ice buildup from their water bowl. Clean up any antifreeze spills and always store unused antifreeze products out of harm’s way. Pets are attracted to the sweet smell and taste of antifreeze, which is extremely toxic and deadly to animals. Consider using a product made with propylene glycol which is less toxic. Give Fido and Fluffy a warm, cozy place to sleep. If they are an outdoor pet, provide adequate insulation between them and the cold ground, such as straw or blankets, and consider a pet house to shelter them from bitter winds and dropping temperatures. If they are indoor pets, make sure they have a blanket or pet bed that is away from drafts and the cold floors. Never leave your pet in a vehicle in cold temperatures; this can be just as hazardous as a hot vehicle. Remember that snow can cover familiar scents for your pet and, therefore, make it very difficult for them to find their way home in the event they escape for a day on the town. Ensure your yards are secure and when walking your pet, always use a leash, unless in a secured dog park. Just a few extra precautions on your part can ensure your pet’s safety and wellbeing during the sometimes harsh winter months. Happy Fido, happy family.
DOGGIE WISHES Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Santa was on hand at Global Pets on Dec. 9 for photos with your pet. All proceeds from the price of the photo were donated to Camrose Rescue Groups and Camrose Dog Park. Rocco a seven-year-old rescue dog was not at all sure what to make of the guy in the red suit.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and color are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
TO GIVE AWAY BARN CATS – Good mousers, litter trained. Grey and multi-coloured. 780-781-1748.
WANTED WILL ACCEPT OLD VEHICLES, machinery, scrap iron, etc. Car batteries (will pay for). Call 780-672-6917 or 780686-5211. HARD TOP TENT TRAILER – in good condition. Phone 780-336-0164 or 780-678-4610.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here, to help you get the results you deserve.

New atlas offers local learning material By Murray Green
The Battle River Watershed Alliance unveiled the new Traversing Terrain and Experience Atlas on Dec. 8. “The Atlas is a compilation of stories, art, photography, geography and interesting facts that make our home unique. It blends the science with the social, it reflects on how the land has shaped us, and how we have shaped the land. Never before has there been a compilation of stories like this about our area,” said Nathalie Stanley Olson, education and outreach coordinator at the Battle River Watershed Alliance. “This has been a longterm project for us. We contacted Heather Marshall last December to do most of the writing for us. About 50 people were interviewed for stories in the book,” said Nathalie. Not only will the atlas be available for purchase, but 225 books will be given to every school and library in the watershed area through a donation from the Battle River Com-

munity Foundation. “While we were working on the state of the watershed report, I was collecting data and mapping things in different ways to help people understand and learn more about the watershed. Not all of the data fit into the
watershed report format. I keep assembling more information,” said Greg Nelson, who is with Alberta Parks. “I thought about taking all of this information to tell the story of the watershed and the people that live here. It takes the
map-making and the stories of people’s lives and connects them to the land base. I left the information with Nathalie and they produced this book.” It sat on the edge of her desk until writer Heather Marshall took the project over. “It’s
called the Measure of a River. Western Canada is carved by rivers. Head waters begin in mountain glaciers, whose reputations have been made by the spurs on them, the cities built beside them or the distant ports reachable by them. The Battle River can claim none of this. It flows from a small lake in the west central parkland and eventually into an oversized valley hollowed in a geological instant. The river relies on whatever rains trickles down from a 1,000 creeks to sustain itself after spring runoff,” said Sarah Skinner, who read part of the book to guests. “Surely, the slowest feeding river in the western basin that drains into Hudson’s Bay. Like the Jordan River, it is defined by what it connects to and what it joins, and the life it draws to itself and by what life it releases,” said Sarah. Come one come all to a free Christmas CAMROSE COUNTY HAS TWO GRADERS FOR SALE luncheon By Lori Larsen
After the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season peaks on Dec. 25, many people will find themselves celebrating at home with friends and family or away visiting. However, for some people, it may mean being alone. A group of considerate volunteers have organized a free Community Christmas Party to be held on Dec. 25 from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Norsemen Inn. “It started out with a message on a Rant and Rave asking if there was anywhere in Camrose on Christmas Day where we could go and volunteer,” said Rick Passek one of the event organizers. As a result of that inquiry, Rick received suggestions from others to put on a free community party. The event will include a light lunch, sing-alongs, treats, fun activities and a visit from Santa who plans on taking a breather from his busy night before. “It snowballed into this in just two hours,” smiled Passek. “There are so many people in Camrose who are alone on Christmas – the elderly, students and homeless people. I think it is our responsibility to help out wherever we can.” Organizers encourage anyone and everyone to come out and enjoy the company of others, just like a big family Christmas. If you are interested in providing donations to the event or for complete details, visit bit.ly/free-christmas-party.
These two (2) graders are located at the Camrose County Office (3755-43 Avenue, Camrose, AB). Viewings are available until January 4, 2018 between the hours of 8:30 am to 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm. Closing date for all bids will be January 4, 2018 at 3:00 pm. All Bids are to be submitted on a Camrose County “BID FORM”. Bid Forms are available at the Camrose County Public Works Office. Bid Forms are also available on our Website www.county.camrose.ab.ca Both units have an individual reserve bid of $130,000. Camrose Safeway assistant managers Kelly Falk, left and Al Paquette, donate several food items to the Stuff an Ambulance initiative.
