Police warn residents to be wise and not fall victim to scams By Lori Larsen
Another scam has some residents worried about what and who can be trusted any more. A recent advertisement placed in The Camrose Booster requesting the services of a babysitter for a family moving to Camrose had some residents innocently replying in hopes of obtaining the job. At least two Camrose residents, who had contacted the person placing the ad, became suspicious about the ad based on responses they each received. These individuals independently contacted The Camrose Booster editor concerned about the legitimacy of the advertisement. The Camrose Booster editor conducted extensive examination of the advertisement published and made the decision that it was likely fraudulent in nature. The decision was then made to immediately notify the public via a push notification on Camrose Now! and with additional commentary on social media. Action was also taken to prevent accepting any further insertions from the person who had placed this particular babysitter/ nanny advertisement. According to Camrose Police Service Constable Kelly Bauer, this is 100 per cent a scam. “It’s interesting that she or he (person requesting babysitting), asks the person answering the ad which city they are in,” said Const. Bauer. “The scammer probably has advertisements all across the

country, so has to clarify with the person answering the ad, which one they responded to. “The scammer is using the community’s trust in a local paper to fraud people out of their money. They are likely after banking information or, if your conversation would continue, it could possibly turn into an overpayment scam of some type,” explained Bauer about the possible methods used to fraudulently obtain money from the person answering the advertisement. “They start to gain your trust, making you feel like you have the job, and
then send you a cheque as an advance payment of some type.” Some residents who answered the advertisement were sent “form” letters providing more information about how the process would continue. “Then the scammer will ask that you send a smaller amount of money via Western Union or some other money transfer service. The catch is that you send them the smaller amount of money before you find out that their cheque is fraudulent and doesn’t clear the bank.” Constable Bauer, on behalf of Camrose Police
Service along with other policing services, cannot reiterate enough the absolute importance of residents realizing and recognizing the amount of scams that are taking place. “I read an article where a CBC reporter received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Canadian Revenue Agency,” related Bauer. “After the scammer gave him (the reporter) the talk about how he owed taxes, and had to purchase iTunes cards as payment or else he would be arrested by the police, the reporter called him out as a scammer. The male (scammer), who had a heavy accent told the reporter, on the phone, ‘Yes, it is a scam and I make about $10,000 every day from Canadians because Canadians are stupid!’” In speaking of a recent incident in Camrose where a local business contacted the police when a customer in his 60s was buying multiple iTunes cards, Bauer said the police attended and explained the CRA scam to the customer, who at first would not admit that he was buying the cards to pay off alleged taxes. “After a long conversation, the male finally acknowledged that he was buying the iTunes cards because a CRA agent told him to. We stopped the purchase and the police members felt like they prevented a fraud. Later the same day, another business called with the same complaint. We attended and, believe it or not, it was the
same man buying iTunes to pay the CRA!” Bauer shared this story and others, in hopes of raising flags with residents about the many scams that are transpiring to fraud people, often including your family, friends and neighbours, out of their hard-earned money. Camrose Police Service offers the following warning signs to residents of possible scams. Pressure tactics include “must act now” or “limited time offer”. You may be told to “keep it a secret” or “don’t let anyone else know about our deal”. If the person calling is asking for money or personal information, that is a definite red flag. If it seems too good to be true, an amazing deal, or if it seems unusual then it is very likely a scam. “It is frustrating for us because it isn’t a local crime where we can identify someone and hold them accountable. These scammers could be from eastern Canada or more likely living somewhere on the other side of the world. “Our world has become so polluted with a vast array of scams using multiple untraceable phone numbers, Gmail accounts (with over 1.2 billion users worldwide, which can be cancelled and new ones made at any time), money transfers that it is all nearly impossible to trace.” On a final note, Const. Bauer strongly advises think before you act and when in doubt, check it out.

Bethany Group searches for board members By Murray Green
The Bethany Group runs smoothly due to the nine dedicated members on the board and a hard working staff. “We currently have 10 members, but we have space for up to 15,” said board member Alan Ford. “Dr. Odell Olsen from Camrose is our current chair. “Member appointments are for a set term with option for renewal. Since there is a significant turnover of board members over time, we are always on alert for potential members. Board members can come from any area in which The Bethany Group operates as a way to encourage representation and diversity in ideas and needs. The governing board benefits from members across central Alberta, not just Camrose. This way we have a better idea of what the
needs are in different areas we serve.” Alan is in his fourth year as a board member. “I joined the Bethany board in the fall of 2014 and, since board members are required to participate in one of the board’s standing committees (nominating, governance or finance) at the same time, I joined the governance committee,” Alan shared. The board operates as a policy group for the organization. “It is not involved in the day-to-day operations. Its focus is on the longer-term direction, such as identifying issues and trends that might impact Bethany’s operations,” said Alan. Long-time area residents know that The Bethany Group celebrated 95 years in 2017. “Board members may have an interest in services and products for seniors or
an interest and concern for vulnerable folks in the community requiring housing, or an interest in the cooperative business relationships that Bethany has with other organizations in Central Alberta offering similar services. With a strong connection to the community, it’s no surprise that people in the area have either been touched by the organization or personally know someone who has.”
Volunteering at The Bethany Group is very rewarding. “It’s a way to give my time and effort to an organization important to healthy community life. The Bethany Group started in 1922 to assist the elderly in Bawlf. It relocated to Camrose in 1949 and, over the years, has expanded into a wide range of products and services from continuing care and supportive living for seniors to a variety of housing
programs for affordable family housing.” Bethany has both housing and long-term care facilities that it operates. In addition, it provides services to Lacombe Foundation, Flagstaff Regional Housing Authority, Wetaskiwin and area Lodge Authority, Camrose and area Lodge Authority and the Parkland Foundation. “The Bethany Group partners with other organizations to support and serve rural Albertans.” In the 29 communities and six counties that The Bethany Group operates in Central Alberta, there are 100 sites serving 3,679 households. Letters to the Editor Conversation, contrast and perspective The conversation
A conversation with someone I haven’t spoken with in several years reminded me of something I’ve been discovering in the past few years: the power of letting things go. For many years, I’ve had occasional binges of going through things and pitching or giving away stuff that no longer brings me joy. A couple of years ago, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo extolled the virtues of keeping only those things that bring us joy. I’ve found her practice to have all the positive uplifting effects she promised. In this season of beginning a new year and a new chapter in life, like a lot of people I review what I want to keep and what I want to get rid of. That’s not just about “stuff;” it extends to habits and thought patterns too. During the conversation with someone I hadn’t heard from in several years we learned that, in very different circumstances, both of us find that the more we let things go, the happier we feel. Both of us have had the experience of leaving behind a house full of stuff and discovering–somewhat to our surprise–that we didn’t miss the stuff. Not just “stuff” like furniture and appliances; also stuff like sentimental objects (such as the chipped teapot I kept for 20 years because it reminded me of a cute incident with a grandchild). We’ve discovered our new stripped-down-to-essentials environments are quite freeing. My friend said, “I’m now glad I only have one closet. It means when I get something new, I have to give something away. Makes me think hard about whether I really want something new.” We’ve also discovered something more profound. As we’ve become less attached to stuff, we also find it easier to let go of attachments to old stories; to let go of feeling responsible or trying to control or manage things that are actually not our business; to let go of resentments and grievances as quickly as we can. We’re not sure if this is related to letting go of stuff or if both patterns are part of getting older and perhaps wiser. Either way, it’s freeing!

Around one month ago, my wife responded to a help wanted ad which she found in The Camrose Booster. The ad read, “Babysitter/Nanny wanted-Care for 3-year-old boy, four hours each day Monday, Wednesday, Friday. $20/ hour. Start work immediately. Send resume to danaestpowell@gmail.com.” She responded to us by email and she told my wife she was hired. Her husband
was being transferred from Australia to Camrose. He works for a private research company. He works very crazy hours and for some reason, she needs a caregiver to pick her son up from day care and to look after him for four hours. She would relieve my wife after the four hours. Before they get here to Camrose, they are sending a certified cheque. We are to keep back $400 as a goodwill to show that we are committed and to send the rest to their store manager. The couple would be willing to pay in cash $400 per week. As my wife and I began to sense that this was a scam, we looked into a well-known scam called “The babysitter’s scam.” In this scam, the details of our job offer was very similar. The employee would send the required funds to the store manager and they would keep back a certain amount. The certified cheque would bounce because it is fake and the
innocent employee would not just be out of a job, but be on the hook for the whole amount of the fake cheque. The couple and the so-called manager would suddenly disappear. We made it very clear to this Dana that we will be making sure that this certified cheque is good then they will have their funds transferred. Our bank manager is willing to check the cheque out and if it comes back as a fraud cheque in four days, we just have to cut off communication with that person. I will be surprised if we get a cheque in the mail. So far after a few days, we have not received anything from that person. She told us that she sent it. This letter is to warn all of you to be careful of any job offers done over the phone or by email. Even if you found it in a newspaper. They are that good. Even professionals can be fooled. The contrast
At a time when my mind has been focussed on getting rid of things that no longer serve, I was fascinated– and highly amused–by a story about an Edmonton man who has kept an unopened Christmas gift for 47 years. Back in 1970, as a 17-year-old high school student, his first serious girlfriend broke up with him just a few days before Christmas–and then handed him a small gift. He was so upset that he vowed never to open the present. And he never has. For years, he kept putting the present under the Christmas tree, even after he married and had children. He’s quoted as saying, “I still pull it out every Christmas, although my wife doesn’t let it go under the tree anymore and hasn’t for quite some time.” He chuckles at this and adds, “I get a lot of pleasure looking at it and not opening it. It’s become such a habit after 47 years, Christmas wouldn’t be the same without it.” Okay, so not everyone thinks letting go of stuff is a great thing. The perspective
Lest I get too ponderous about any of this, I appreciated a comment from Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall, who recently announced he is retiring from politics. During an interview he was asked what advice he would give politicians. He said, “There’s an appreciation for humility.” He suggests getting a dog, walking the dog and cleaning up after it. “If you’ve got your little baggies in your hand and you’re cleaning up after your dog...I think it’s a lot harder to get arrogant about anything.” Some version of that practice–something that keeps us from getting arrogant–sounds like pretty good advice for all of us! ***

The 32nd annual Canadian Bull Congress is scheduled for Jan. 26 and 27 at the Camrose Regional Exhibition and invites residents to come and take part in an amazing show of beef and brawn. The School Education Program will take place on Jan. 23 and 24 from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. This program is sponsored by Camrose County and offers school-aged children an opportunity to learn about safety and operations of the agriculture industry through presentations and demonstrations. When you drink alcohol, you may be putting your health and safety at risk. Your risk of harm increases with each drink that you have. And your risk of harm increases with how often you drink at amounts above the low-risk drinking guidelines, even if you do this only now and then. Drinking alcohol may harm your liver, pancreas, nervous system, heart and brain. It can cause high blood pressure, depression, stomach problems or sexual problems. It can contribute to the development of some cancers, such as cancers of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, colon and breast. It can cause memory loss and affect your ability to think, learn and reason, cause harm to your developing baby (fetus) if you drink during pregnancy, according to Alberta Health Services. Alcohol can lead to problems at work, school or home, increase the risk of car crashes and violent behaviour. It can cause you to develop
an alcohol use problem. In general, limit how much you drink. You can reduce your long-term health risks by drinking no more than Canadian health experts recommend if you’re a man, have no more than three standard drinks a day on most days and no more than 15 drinks a week. If you’re a female, have no more than two standard drinks a day on most days and no more than 10 drinks a week. If you choose to drink, keep the amount of alcohol you drink within the recommended limits. Drinking at the upper limits should only happen once in a while, not every day or week. Plan nondrinking days every week to avoid developing a habit. Keep in mind that a safe amount of alcohol for one person may be too much for another. Because of things like age, sex, weight and health history, alcohol can affect people differently. If you’re an adult who doesn’t weigh a lot, is younger than 25 or older than 65, or isn’t used to drinking, you need to be even more careful about how much alcohol you drink.
If you choose to drink, here are some things you can do to reduce your risk of getting sick or injured: have a meal or a snack with your drink. Don’t drink on an empty stomach. Drink slowly. Don’t have more than two standard drinks in any three-hour period. Have a glass of water or non-alcoholic, caffeine-free beverage (such as a soft drink or fruit juice) between drinks. Avoid risky situations and activities. Don’t drink and drive, and don’t get in a car with a driver who has been drinking. Don’t take over-thecounter or prescription medicines that interact with alcohol. Limit how much you drink. If you think you’re drinking too much, you might want to cut back. Alberta Health Services offers a wide range of services for individuals looking for help for someone they care about, or for themselves. The promise of a new year often brings about the promise of change. Resolutions to get into shape, eat properly, start a new job, start a new hobby and the list goes on. Perhaps all of which have a common theme, a new year a new you. The unfortunate part of many New Year’s resolutions is people start with good intentions but, for whatever reasons, give up too soon. This year, if you make and keep only one resolution, consider taking care of yourself, both physically and mentally. Here are some tips for putting your own well being first, thus ensuring you can be around to care for others. Pay attention to your body. Our bodies communicate with us all the time, but in our busy lives we may ignore sometimes subtle, sometimes not so subtle, signs and symptoms. If you have a new ache or something seems off, visit your physician and get properly diagnosed. Nobody knows your body better than you. Don’t ignore injuries. Take all injuries seriously and seek medical advice. With many of the other
methods of treatment such as physiotherapy, massage, chiropractic medicine, injuries can be treated at the root of the cause. Biorhythms are our bodies way of maintaining balance. Rest and activity should be equally as important in our everyday lives. Daily exercise combined with a proper night’s sleep help us maintain healthy bodies, minds and souls. Small intervals of exercise throughout the day may be easier to fit into busy schedules. Getting restorative sleep is immeasurable for maintaining your health and can actually help to stave off chronic disease and accidents as the result of sleep deprivation. Eating healthy foods and a well-balanced diet has been a mainstay in taking care of ourselves for years. The Canada Food Guides, available on the Government of Canada website at www.canada. ca/en/health-canada/services/canada-food-guides. html, offer tips on healthy food choices. Reducing stress is not always as easy as it sounds, yet is imperative in maintaining a healthy, happy
and productive you. Some simple stress-relieving tips that can be done with little to no interruption to your regular routine include: a few minutes of meditation each day; deep breathing and focusing on your breathing, which can quite literally be done while you sit at your desk; being present, slowing down, deeply relaxing and taking in your surroundings; reaching out for help (there is no shame in asking for help and it often provides benefits to both the person receiving and giving); and, once again, being in tune with your body. Do something you enjoy every day. That could mean reading, painting, gardening, playing with your children or pet, dancing, listening to music, singing, or even watching your favourite television show. Dedicate an hour of selfish indulgence. Make friends and socialize with them whether that be through email, telephone calls, getting together or joining a new group or organization. Social interaction with friends builds a sense of belonging and can do wonders for feelings of loneliness. Continued on page 16

Giving up tobacco is easier said than done. Giving it up may be one of the toughest challenges you face in life, but it will also could be one of the most rewarding. Everyone who uses tobacco can benefit from quitting and gain the health rewards that come with it. When you quit cigarettes and other tobacco products – no matter how old you are – you can decrease your risk of early death, heart attack and stroke, cancer, lung disease and sexual and reproductive problems. There are other benefits to quitting as well, which are more immediate. For example, within 20 minutes of quitting smoking, your blood pressure drops to a level similar to what it was before your last cigarette. Within eight hours, the carbon monoxide level drops in your body and the oxygen level in your blood increases to normal. Within 48 hours, your chances of having a heart attack start to go down and your sense of smell and taste begin to improve. Set goals but make them measurable, attainable and believable. Quite often people fail with New Year’s resolutions because they never believed they could achieve the goals in the first place. Be able to measure your success in a meaningful way. More exercise may mean less medication. Growing a garden may equal healthier eating. Before you set a goal, consider whether or not you can actually achieve it and is it realistic. If you cannot hold a tune, don’t aspire to be the next singing sensation, but taking voice lessons may be a viable option. Don’t make goals to suit others. Your goals should be relevant and rewarding to you and your life. First and foremost this year, try to put yourself first. Remember, you cannot assist others with their oxygen mask until yours is securely in place.

Scheffler returns with more comedy By Murray Green
Anne-Marie Scheffler has had success writing about her own experiences in life. Free Every Other Weekend is no exception. Last year, she thrilled the audience with her take on being a mother in Suddenly Mommy. This year, she has revealed her life as a person entering the dating world again. “I had such a great time last time I was there. It is so nice that the community liked the show enough to support me in coming back. This is my sequel to Suddenly Mommy that is super fun,” said Anne-Marie. “If they have seen Suddenly Mommy, then people will relate to some of the reoccurring characters like Terry. If you didn’t see the first one, don’t worry, you will enjoy this one with a new character Kendra.” She will be performing at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts centre in two shows, Friday, Jan. 12 and Saturday, Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. “When I arrived last time, I came into the Lougheed Centre to check out some technical things at rehearsal. I drove in from another city and went straight there. I checked the fridge for the artists and a sign on the door said ‘Artists for your rider (look) in the fridge.’ I thought that was wonderful and opened the fridge and ate some food. Then I realized, I ate someone’s lunch,” laughed Anne-Marie. “That’s the story I share when I talk about Camrose.” This new comedy ref lects what happens when you’re newly divorced with kids. You go dating every other weekend. It’s a new kind of relationship comedy. Your whole life, you just wanted to get married and have babies. And just in the nick of time, you snagged a soulmate and started a family. But now your perfect life has fallen apart. Instead of the traditional family, you have an ex-husband and a parenting schedule. “This reflects my life.

I’ve been having a good time touring with this show. It’s good to come back to most of the same venues and seeing familiar people. It’s nice to see sold out venues. People are loving the show. It is gratifying to see what you are doing has an impact on people’s lives.” This show is written and performed by Anne Marie of Second City Toronto, Just For Laughs, The Comedy Network, SPANK! The Fifty Shades Parody, Caroline’s on Broadway and Suddenly Mommy. This year, Anne-Marie will be performing two shows in the cabaret, rather than the large theatre. “It is always great to be intimate with your audience and it is a show that goes along with serving liquor. In places like Second City Chicago, Toronto and other popular venues, they serve alcohol, so I think the change is welcome for my show in Camrose as well,” explained Anne-Marie.
“The story is about dating again and sometimes that involves going to bars. One scene is set in a bar, so it is nice to have a glass of wine while you watch the show.” Anne-Marie has children aged 13 and 11. “The touring part affects the family, but sometimes they are able to come with me. “I want to get the message across that just because you go through a divorce, it can be a happy new beginning. This is a way to say to people that you are still sexy even if you have gone through some tough times,” shared Anne-Marie. “I was told this show brings in people who normally don’t come out to the theatres. They are coming out of the bars and into the theatre. It is fun to be the voice of the dating-again crowd. If I can make people laugh, I want to do it.”

This recital features works for violin and piano, transcribed or composed by violinists. Canadian violinist Guillaume Tardif pursues an active career as a performer and pedagogue. He regularly travels on recital tours and appears as a soloist with orches-
tras in prominent venues in Europe, South and North America, and Asia–most recently at Carnegie-Weill Hall in Paganini’s 24 Caprices. He often performs repertoire ranging from early music to contemporary works and introduces many lesserknown works and original compositions, cadenzas and arrangements. Guillaume Tardif is the associate professor of Violin and String Area coordinator at the department of music, University of Alberta. He has been a guest artist or professor
at various universities and conservatories. He is often involved as an adjudicator for competitions and music foundations, and leads the Enterprise Quartet concerts in Edmonton and the Alberta String Association. Camrose’s own Roger Admiral, pianist, performs solo and chamber music repertoire spanning the 18th through the 21st century. Known for his dedication to contemporary music, Roger has commissioned and premiered many new compositions.
He works regularly with UltraViolet (New Music Edmonton) and Aventa Ensemble (Victoria), and performs as part of Kovalis Duo with Montreal percussionist Philip Hornsey. Wine Soaked Preachers return to Camrose By Murray Green
The Wine Soaked Preachers are making a return trip to Camrose on Saturday, Jan. 13 for a show at the Bailey Theatre. The Calgary-based band performed on the 2017 Big Valley Jamboree main stage and participated in the song writers’ tent. “We have received lots of positive comments about The Wine Soaked Preachers,” said Tom Gerling, CEO of the Camrose Regional Exhibition. These five urban cowboys are known for writing and preaching their own style of Alberta-soaked music. “We started off as a two-piece Corb Lund tribute band,” said Jay Bilyk, vocalist and guitarist. “We named ourselves after a Corb song ‘Case of The Wine Soaked Preacher.’ We’ve come a long way since then. We have added three members and produced lots of original songs, though we always throw in a couple Corb’s songs.” The band has four CD releases since 2012. They are currently touring, promoting their album, The Same Old Town. The Wine Soaked Preachers’ music has been described as country, folk, roots, blue grass and western. Their catchy lyrics such as, “Stinkweed and Sweet Clover” and “Hey Girl” have been fan favourites.

Luella Elvina Ramsey February 3, 1928 ~ December 25, 2017 Luella Elvina Ramsey (nee Rasmussen) was born February 3, 1928 to Laura and Arthur Rasmussen on the farm west of Edberg, Alberta. She is survived by her sister Devina (Gordon) Dennis of Camrose; sister-in-law Ruth Ramsey of Camrose; lifelong friend of the family Kaye (Stephen) Innes of Edberg; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Luella was predeceased by her husband Leroy; parents Arthur and Laura Rasmussen; grandparents; and stepfather Melvin Nystrom. Luella attended school for eleven years in Edberg, walking two-and-a-half miles to school and home from the farm south of Edberg. She graduated from Business School and worked at the main Imperial Bank in Edmonton, Alberta, then at the Imperial Bank in Ferintosh. After marriage to Leroy on February 8, 1950, Luella kept books for the Edberg creamery for years, and then managed the Edberg Co-op store for 25 years, as well as farmed with Leroy until they retired in 1982. Then they wintered in Mesa, Arizona for 15 years, enjoying golfing almost every day. Luella and Leroy were the perfect hosts and enjoyed entertaining all their friends here as well as in Mesa, Arizona. Luella was noted for her cooking and baking, especially her “Flapper Pie” and angel food cake. She was District Deputy for the Royal Purple and a charter member. She was an active member of Edberg Lutheran Church, Edberg Lutheran Ladies’ Aid, Edberg Home Circle and a longtime member of Camrose Golf Club. The family are all very grateful of the care Luella received from the staff on Level 1 at Rosehaven Care Center and Bashaw Meadows. A Funeral Service was held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 from Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Julianna WehrfritzHanson officiating. Wastewater treatment plant upgrades By Lori Larsen
Separate Schools in Alberta
The recent and ongoing dispute between the Province of Alberta and the Alberta Catholic school system over sex education curriculum, especially on the issue of LGBTQ relationships, brings to light questions that have existed in Canada since Confederation, namely whether publicly funded separate religious schools should exist in Canada and how conflicts between religious doctrine and state policy should be resolved. Immigration and secularization have since obscured this fact; but it is also the case that at one time Roman Catholic was equated to French, while Protestant was equated to English—and in most provinces—the public school system. This might seem highly problematic to us today, but at a time when religion was part of the curriculum for all schools in Canada, it was seen as a way of avoiding conflict. At one time, Roman Catholicism was equated with the French population and school system, while Protestantism was equated with English Canadians and the public schools outside of Quebec. Immigration and secularization have since obscured this fact and while this might seem highly problematic to us today, at a time when religion was part of the curriculum for all schools in Canada, it was seen as a way of avoiding conflict. Since education is constitutionally a provincial manner, each province is free to establish its own school systems. Three provinces–British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island–chose not to establish a publicly funded separate school system, meaning that in these provinces private schools have limited access to public funding and, therefore, must be self-sufficient. Indeed, prior to 1977 BC refused to fund any school outside of the public school system. All of the other provinces have or have had a publicly funded separate school system. Newfoundland-Labrador took it to the extreme: when it joined Canada in 1949 it had seven denominationally-based school systems. And although union would begin in 1969 with an Anglican, United Church and Salvation Army integrated school system, it was not until after two referendums in 1995 and 1997 that a single system was implemented there in the 1998-99 academic year. About 108 years earlier Manitoba had done the same, much to the anger of the Métis, who had fought for a bilingual-bicultural west during the Red River Resistance. Technically not aimed at French education, this move was nevertheless seen as an attack on Franco-Manitobans as whole since they were predominantly Roman Catholic. Attempts to get the federal and imperial governments to reverse this move failed, and the Laurier-Greenway Compromise effectively “ended” the issue in 1896 by allowing extra-curricular religious instruction in schools. As far we know no one lost their life because of the Manitoba Schools Question. The same cannot be said for the New Brunswick Schools Question. In this case, the province created a unified school system in 1871 much to the anger of the Acadians. Many refused to pay the new schools taxes and two individuals were killed following rioting in 1875: Acadian Louis Mailloux and militia man John Gifford. Foreshadowing the Laurier-Greenway Compromise appeals to the federal and imperial governments failed and the “solution” found was allowing extra-curricular religious instruction. Publicly funded separate school systems are protected by Section 93 of the Constitution Act 1867. Section 93 emerged from a time in Canadian history when it was assumed Canadians belonged to western Christian faiths and could be categorized based on which side their Church took during the Protestant Reformation. This policy excludes Eastern Christians and nonChristians. Yet in many provinces it remains in place because of the Constitution. Currently, the province of Alberta is attempting a Québec approach–enforcing uniform curriculum. It raises the question, however, of why have a publicly funded separate Catholic school system if you won’t allow it to be Catholic? Moreover, as others have argued, this present debate can’t be simply regarded as a case of religious freedoms versus LGBTQ rights because there are those who find themselves at the intersection. Some LGBTQ people find great meaning and purpose in their faith and want to remain in their Catholic communities. Their faith, just like their sexual orientation and gender identity, is equally important to their identity and informs how they conduct their lives.
The City of Camrose Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade is moving along and the anticipated $40 million project will not only satisfy provincial mandates, but will ensure even cleaner wastewater returning to the environment. “We began this project back in late 2008,” said City of Camrose director of engineering Jeremy Enarson. “Since that time, we have been working on the conceptual and preliminary designs.” Enarson went on to say the preliminary design stage of the project is now complete and has been submitted to the province to ensure approval for the next steps of the project. “We are at the end of a major milestone and about to jump into detail design which we hope to be complete by the end of July (this year).” “At that point, we will essentially have construction drawings and specifications and be able to solicit bids from contractors.” Because this project will involve a multi-million dollar contract, the City foresees a lot of competition for the bid to complete the project which, in turn, could mean some competitive pricing. “A lot of big companies will likely sharpen their pencils as good as they can because they will want this job.” The goal is to award the contract by October to one or two general contractors. “At that point, it will be winter and there won’t be too much on-site construction, but the contractors can start securing their materials in order to hit the ground running in the spring (March) of 2019.” The contractor(s) will then work straight through the summer months of 2019 on components such as earth moving and building lagoons–work that can only be done when the ground is not frozen and in dry conditions. “By the winter of 2019, most of the structures should be built so the contractor(s) can begin work inside the structures for the winter of 2019-20 and then, in the summer of 2020, they can do work on the outside again including the final tie-ins by the fall of 2020,” said Enarson. The project is estimated to have a 20-month construction period, with a forecasted date of completion in late 2020 or early 2021. “We will basically have an upgraded wastewater treatment plant by 2021,” which is about one year prior to the allotted date mandated by the provincial government. “We have to have it done by July 2022. Having it completed for 2021 will give us about a

year of buffer in the event of any construction delays, so we shouldn’t have any issues of compliance with the province.” By doing so, the City will continue to maintain its already positive working relationship with the province. While technically, the upgrade to the wastewater treatment plant is mandated by provincial legislation, Enarson further explained that the sooner the upgrade is complete, the sooner the City will be sending cleaner wastewater back into the environment. “Anything we can do to advance of that timeline, that will obviously have a positive benefit to the environment. We are going to have higher quality wastewater being discharged back to the environment one year sooner than we are legislated.”
The government regulates that all wastewater treatment facilities meet requirements in 10-year time frames. “The City of Camrose wastewater treatment plant meets all the regulatory requirements now, but within the next 10-year time frame, the rules are going to change and we want to make sure that we are also meeting the new rules when they come into effect,” indicated Enarson. “The upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant will help us remove phosphorous and nitrogen from going into the Battle River and Driedmeat Lake.” For the detailed report on the Wastewater Treatment Plant project or more information, visit the City of Camrose website at www. camrose.ca.

Finally, an old man is locked in the garden of his memories, locked there because he can only speak in disjointed syllables. His three daughters who are with him in this moment can’t understand what he is getting at, and they are becoming increasingly impatient.
Lives of the Saints plays Camrose Composite High School students will be directing and performing in a series of one act plays on Jan. 17 at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. The show called Lives of the Saints–One Act Plays begin at 8 p.m. Drama classes from Grades 10 to 12 will be sharing one act plays written by David Ives and John O’Brien that could make you laugh out loud, while pondering life. In a presentation to City of Camrose Council, Camrose Open Door executive director, Jessica Hutton explained how the organization continues to grow in serving the needs of youth ages 12 to 24 (can include families) who may find themselves at risk. The Open Door works with a staff consisting of the executive director (Hutton), case manager supervisor, outreach navigator, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder coordinator, administrative assistant, donation /communication coordinator and five youth support workers in Camrose and one in Tofield and a staff member in Lougheed, providing services in rural situations and in the community. “Whoever gives us a call and needs us, that is where we are going,” said Hutton. She continued by describing a variety of reasons why a person may seek help, including domestic violence, neglect/ child abuse, personal/family addictions, disabilities, help finding a rental home or job, help with budgeting or completing school. “Or they may need large-scale support, which is full shelter and everything that comes with that. “One of the things The Open Door is well known for is meeting individuals where they are at and that is a huge piece of how we do our work. We don’t put a lot of expectations on an individual right away. We work with them through their journey as they move forward.” The Open Door shelter houses eight emergency beds and four transitional suites. “An individual comes in during an emergency and we provide them the immediate shelter they need. The point of the transition suite is to be able to move them forward while they learn how to live independently; then, when they have graduated from the transition suite, they can find a place on their own,” explained Hutton. Hutton also noted that over the past year there have been four months in which the shelter has been over capacity and unable to take in individuals because of the amount of calls for service. “Our numbers have steadily increased in the last year. We are seeing more and more calls for help.” Hutton explained that the outreach is The Open Door’s largest program and is responsible for doing everything from providing some of the services in schools in the City as well as in outlying areas and has a 24/7 support line for individuals requiring service. “Counselling is a huge part of what we do to help
individuals throughout their journey. We also have an FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) support program meeting the needs of individuals who have been diagnosed with FASD. It is a very busy program for us,” remarked Hutton. One of the major services The Open Door provides is basic needs. “We provide food, clothing, anything the individual needs. If they come to us two days away from their pay cheque or income support and they suddenly have a crisis and don’t have the money or capacity to purchase something, we are often the place they come so they do not end up homeless. We do a lot of prevention.”

Hutton spoke about The Open Door’s Youth Mentorship program. “It involves pairing some of our young individuals with individuals in this community who have a lot to offer them. We are always looking for mentors.” Hutton described the newly activated Camrose and Area Integrated Youth
local schools. “We need to partner up so we can stretch our dollars and extend our services.” With regards to donations, Hutton related that there are 26 streams of funding coming together into what The Open Door does and these funds are further divided into the different aspects of the organization. The Open Door also relies heavily on donations from the community. Two major fundraisers, the Gala and Golf Tournament provide another vital source of funding. Council inquiries

Hutton also explained that The Open Door supplies meals at the shelter. “When our shelter is full, we have twelve 16- and 17-year-old males and females and that is a lot of food.” Another program recently added to the services provided by The Open Door is the Tenant Education Program in partnership with Alberta Real Estate Foundation. “It’s a training certificate program done with individuals in preparation for learning how to rent. They learn what their rights and responsibilities are in rentals,” explained Hutton. “We have found this very useful and it is now on our website, so anyone can access it, including the general public.” The ID program gives The Open Door the capacity to have notarized identification done for individuals seeking assistance, especially in the event they are fleeing from a bad situ-

We are now able to do that with what we call a warm transfer, quickly and seamlessly. These are potential areas where we were losing our youth and young adults in the referral process, for whatever reason.” Hutton went on to say the Province of Alberta is using the Camrose Hub as a pilot program for the rest of Alberta. Other community partners The Open Door works closely with include Camrose Police Service and RCMP, Camrose and District Victim Services, Child and Family Services, the University of Alberta Augustana Campus, Battle River School District and

However, that is not always the case.” As for the length of stay at the shelter, Hutton indicated they do not put a cap on it. “We could end up with a youth in shelter for a year or more. If they are going to school and they are working, that is what we are going to ask of them.” She went on to say that while the shelter is meant to provide a safe place for these individuals, the staff encourages and assists them in transitioning into their own safe environment. Councillor David Ofrim asked Hutton about the success of the youth
mentorship program and response from the community. Hutton said, “We have had a lot of response from the community. A rough number would be about 20 active mentors. We like to have only one individual with one mentor so they can create a long-lasting mentorship.” Ofrim also inquired as to the number of in-town versus out-of-town individuals. Hutton indicated there were currently 120 open files at The Open Door. “In terms of numbers, Camrose compared to elsewhere, there are seven people outside of Camrose.” Councillor PJ Stasko wondered in what ways could the relationship between the City of Camrose and The Open Door be improved. Hutton replied. “We could look at opportunities for partnership in terms of things that we currently pay for or would like donated back to us, such as aquatic passes. We could use so many of them.” Mayor Norm Mayer asked approximately what the demand would be for aquatic passes “If we gave one a week, that would be 12, the capacity at the shelter,” replied Hutton. “It is a good distraction for the individuals and what they are dealing with. The individuals get great use out of them.” Councillor Lindstrand asked if The Open Door was benefitting from the taxi token program. Hutton was quick to say the program was vastly beneficial and that they could easily use three times the amount they currently receive. Councillor Agnes Hoveland asked who prepares all the meals for the individuals using The Open Door and shelter, and how many volunteers were presently helping with The Open Door. Hutton said the staff, along with assistance from the individuals, prepare all the meals. “It depends on the group of individuals we have in the shelter. Some are to the point where they are helping and we are teaching life skills, but if we have somebody who has been very traumatized, the last thing we think about is having them cook their meals. We simply make the meals until they are at the point where they are able to help. “As for volunteers, we have over 30. Some help at the shelter, some work in the office – multiple volunteers doing multiple different roles for us. We also rely quite heavily and love having the Community Service Learning students from Augustana.”

Kroetch brought 1957 Chevy back to life By Murray Green
Fred Kroetch from Daysland always took a shining to turning unwanted old vehicles into a desired automobile by restoring it to its former glory. The 1957 Chevrolet is a car which was introduced by Chevrolet in September 1956 for the 1957 model year. It was available in three series models: the upscale Bel Air, the mid-range 210 and the 150. A two-door station wagon, the Nomad was produced as a Bel Air model. An upscale trim option called the “Delray” was available for 210 two-door sedans. It is a popular and sought after classic car. These vehicles are often restored to their original condition and sometimes modified. The car’s image has been frequently used in toys, graphics, music, movies and television. The ‘57 Chevy, as it is often known, is an auto icon. He currently drives a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air four door hard top to local car shows. “I have had this car for six years and it was from the ground up restoration. It was in pretty bad shape when I found it,” recalled Fred. “I like to re-build all kinds of cars, but this is one of the nicest. I put about $25,000 into this car on parts alone. I like that it is a four door car because my grandchildren can get in the back and go for a ride.” The back doors are different than in a sedan. The front door and to the grille is the same. “Its the back doors that set this car apart from other Bel Air models,,” he said. “The car came with a 283 motor, but I changed it to a 350. At that time I couldn’t find a good 283 motor, so went with a reliable 350 engine.” For 1957 there were four standard engine options, a 235.5 cubic inch inline sixcylinder producing 140 hp, a 265 cu in V8 Turbo-Fire producing 162 hp and two 283 cu in V8s: a Turbo-Fire twin-barrel carburetor producing 185 hp and a Super Turbo-Fire four-barrel carburetor developing 220 hp. Once completed, he enjoys taking it easy and driving a fair distance. “We have been down to the Unit-

ed States, up to Fort McMurray and to B.C. with it . I enjoy going to car shows and travelling with it.” Fred has always loved a challenge. “To me, the older vehicles are a challenge to restore. It is a nice looking car. They run good until they break down.” He approaches each vehicle the same as putting together a difficult puzzle. “A piece of tin is a piece of a tin. They all go together. I have re-built several vehicles over the years,” said Fred. Collectors today love the power generated by the car with classic designs in the 55 to 57 years. Today, the Bel Air series of Chevrolets from 1953 to 1957 are far and away the most desirable models for collectors. However, Bel Air models do have appeal and do sport a fair amount of chrome trim and deluxe interior appointments, making them attractive and comfortable. General Motors executives wanted an entirely new car for 1957, but pro-
duction delays necessitated the 1955-56 design for one more year. Ed Cole, chief engineer for Chevrolet, dictated a series of changes that significantly increased the cost of the car. These changes included a new dashboard, sealed cowl, and the relocation of air ducts to the headlight pods, which resulted in the distinctive chrome headlight that helped make the ‘57 Chevrolet a classic. Fourteen-inch wheels replaced the fifteen-inch wheels from previous years to give the car a lower stance, and a wide grille was used to give the car a wider look from the front. The now famous ‘57 Chevrolet tailfins were designed to duplicate the wide look in the rear. Bel Air models were given gold trim: the mesh grille insert and front fender chevrons, as well as the “Chevrolet” script on the hood and trunk, were all rendered in anodized gold. The 1957 Chevrolets did not have an oil pressure gauge or a voltmeter. The base engine was an
inline six-cylinder called the Blue Flame Six. The engine was smoother run-
ning than the V-8. Carburetion came from a single one-barrel carburetor.

The Camrose Kodiaks’ players had a bee in their helmet as they stung the Drayton Valley Thunder 7-2 on New Year’s Day. The team refocused over the holidays and came out swarming to a 6-0 lead before the Thunder could even be heard. McKenzie Welke notched two goals in the opening period and Colson Gengenbach and Jacob Kendall added single markers to build up a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes. Drayton Valley tightened up the defence in the middle frame as Matt Dykstra netted the lone tally to improve the score to 5-0. Tyler Schendel scored on the power play for the Kodiaks before the Thunder made some noise. After two Thunder goals, Daine Milgate closed the scoring in the last minute for the big Kodiaks win. Goalie Luke Lush stopped 25 of 27
shots directed his way. The Kodiaks fired 37 shots against two Drayton Valley goalies. The victory started the team off right in 2018 and moved the Kodiaks past the Calgary Canucks in the south standings in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Kyler Kupka was not only named the hardest working Kodiak in December, he was named the AJHL player of the week prior to the holiday break. He earned five goals and eight points in four games. Camrose is on a five-game road series before playing a home game at the EnCana Arena on Jan. 26 against the Canucks. The next night, the Kodiaks take on the Brooks Bandits and on Jan. 30, Camrose hosts the Sherwood Park Crusaders to complete the January schedule.

Dedicated group feeding hungry souls By Lori Larsen
With the excitement of the holiday season over, the abundant generosity that accompanies the season tends to ween off. But the dedicated group of volunteers for Martha’s Table lunch program ensures the gift of a filled stomach goes all year round. Martha’s Table is a not-for-profit initiative that is coordinated under the umbrella of Camrose Neighbour Aid started by the Camrose Ministerial Association. “St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church began the program in May 1999 as a free soup and lunch program,” said Grace Lewis, coordinator of volunteers for Martha’s Table.
So that’s about six people for each separate day at the three different host churches. That’s a lot of volunteering,” commented Grace That just accounts for the volunteers serving the actual lunch. There are scores more who assist in picking up and delivering, shopping, prepping and, of course, administrative responsibilities such as organizing and reporting. “It is so much more than just when the lunch is actually being served,” Grace said. Jo-Anne Tweed added, “We have a group of gentleman (volunteers) that go and pick up the soup and the groceries at the different stores. There is one
but favourite choices as well. “All the churches start with a blessing,” said Grace. “After the food is served, the volunteers do the cleanup of clearing and doing dishes.” The soups, breads and other food items are generously donated by local businesses. The number of guests varies from week to week, but on an average 25 to 35 people are served per week, 52 weeks per year. And with each serving, volunteers show up willingly and often go above and beyond to assist the guests, quite often joining the guests in a meal and conversation. Grace has been volunteering with Martha’s Table for five years. “When I stopped working, I came and spoke to Jo-Anne Tweed (Camrose Neighbor Aid program director) about volunteering. I started working in the Neighbor Aid office, then Jo-Anne asked if I would be interested in doing this. “We have luncheons three times a week,” explained Grace. “Tuesday is hosted at Camrose United Church, Wednesday at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church and Thursday at CityLights Church. Each of these host churches provides the supervisor who knows what needs to be done.” The groups of volunteers are arranged through 12 church congregations within the City of Camrose, four country church congregations, one Camrose service club and two Camrose schools. Each group is assigned a particular month of volunteering at one of the three host churches. “There is usually five volunteers from each group, plus a supervisor.
volunteer who has been picking up the bread for 15 years.” Grace continued, “We also have volunteers who go and turn on the soups which has to be done by 8 a.m. At 11 a.m., the volunteers show up, but really the supervisor shows up way before that.” Grace remarked on how well organized the luncheons are and how the host churches make sure everything runs smoothly for the volunteers. “It is wonderful that the churches are willing to share their facilities with us. When the volunteers come in, they make up the sandwiches and slice up the veggies and all those kinds of things and then serve the food.” On a lighter note, Grace remarked, “People say the egg salad is always a hit and if there isn’t egg salad, they are somewhat disappointed. So the supervisor has to go in early and boil eggs and let them cool.” This is, once again, a testament to the devotion of the volunteers who are concerned with, not only providing a healthy lunch,

Guests were greeted by name by Michele Warner, supervisor and volunteer for the church, who made a point of making each person feel welcome and comfortable. Volunteers bustled about in white aprons, placing crockpots of soup on the table, arranging real china plates and metal cutlery on the serving table. As more guests came in, they were quickly acknowledged and guided to the table of food. The Martha’s Table program is a well-oiled machine. The goodwill of local businesses supplying food and the graciousness of so many volunteers making it happen has helped it stand the test of time and continues to offer those less fortunate, and others, a nutritious lunch and a warm and welcoming place to come and enjoy good food and great people. Bridge replacement project on schedule By Lori Larsen
It is traffic as usual over the 48 Avenue bridge for the next few months during the winter freeze. Phase 1 of the 48th Avenue Bridge Replacement project is officially complete and the road and sidewalks are both open to the public. According to City of Camrose director of engineering Jeremy Enarson, PSA Construction (the project contractor) was able to complete all of the work that they have planned for Phase 1 with only a few minor schedule delays which merely shortened the planned winter shutdown. “Everything went very well,” noted Enarson. “There were some minor traffic delays, but that’s what we expected. “We (the City and PSA) want to thank the citizens of Camrose for their patience and understanding through Phase 1 of the project,” he added. “We heard a lot of positive comments from the contractor about how people didn’t speed through the area and how they were very patient.” In regards to the work completed in Phase 1, Enarson indicated that there was more rock material put into the lake than originally anticipated due to an underestimation of the amount of loose organic material within the lake that ended up being pushed out the sides. “Essentially it was just an error in the original survey. There was some additional cost due to the extra rock material placed in the lake, but we were able to absorb that overage in the overall budget due to the project contingency that we build into the budget. We have a certain amount set aside just to deal with the unknowns we might come across on a project.”
Enarson stated at this point there is nothing that would suggest the project will be over budget or schedule. Enarson also commended the work AMEC Foster Wheeler (consultant to the project) has done thus far in representing the City and interpreting the contract. “They did the design and the specs so they are the most familiar with it.” Phase 2 is scheduled to begin in the early spring (late March or early April), dependent on weather. “If the contractor can get in sooner that would give them a little bit of breathing room towards the end of the contract,” explained Enarson. “If we have a late winter and it’s cold for an extended period of time, then we would be into April. There are certain things the contractor can do before the frost is out of the ground, but generally they don’t want to start too early and try to anticipate when there will be frostfree conditions. Basically, they will keep an eye on the weather forecast.” The City would like to remind residents that during the entire duration of Phase 2 of the project, which is targeted to run from late March or early April until the end of August, 48th Avenue from 53 Street to 51 Street will be completely closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic. “The end of August is when substantial completion has to be done,” said Enarson.”The roads and sidewalks have to be reopened to the public at that time according to the terms of PSA’s contract with the City.” Residents are encouraged to refer to the project blog on City website www.camrose.ca/ for ongoing updates on the project.
