County to add Braim to water connection By Murray Green
When Camrose County extends the waterline from Armena to the Ervick Junction, it will include a spur to the Braim subdivision. “I move that Camrose County council authorize administration to proceed with design revisions to the Armena to Ervick waterline, such that a service line be constructed to the residential subdivision of Braim as part of the overall Armena to Ervick Waterline Project, with the line to be sized large enough to allow for future expansion,” said councillor Brian Willoughby. Currently, the City of Camrose supplies the water to the subdivision. “I want to keep all of our options open in case we expand connections in the future,” added councillor Willoughby. The waterline heads south from Armena and a reservoir is scheduled to be built on or near TWP Road 472, which is directly west of Braim. “We were going to take the line on private lands from Armena to Ervick and get easements from property owners in exchange for hookups. After questioning landowners along the way, there isn’t a lot of interest in getting residential connections,” explained Zach Mazure, pub-
lic works assistant manager. “So we have decided to go down Highway 21 using the right-away. By going with an above ground reservoir it has given us the ability to find savings. We can now get more services with the same amount. We could push water over to Braim. Currently, we are restricted on who we can connect, how many we can connect, where they can connect and we pay a flat fee for the residences. This is a restrictive feel, compared to what we get with the Capital Regional Water Service Commission.” By serving county residents in Braim, Camrose County would have savings over what they pay now. “We looked at the feasibility study first. With what we proposed in the changes and the additional line to Braim, we are looking at a lot more services for our money.” The original cost for the Armena to Ervick waterline was $6.25 million. “In Armena, we were going to build a new underground water storage facility with pumps because the current pumps are not big enough,” said Zach. “It can supply Armena, but not all the residents along the way, as well as Ervick in the future. That was part of the problem, serving additional
resident hook-ups along the way, which requires a lot more pumping. In Ervick, we would have had another underground reservoir with pumping capacity for the Ervick subdivision.” Option 2, allows for a fill line rather than a distribution line, which has less requirements. Using the Highway 21 right-away is also a cost saving. Building above ground reservoirs outside of Armena and in Ervick also reduces costs. The only added cost is the line from the reservoir going east to Braim. “We can add a line to Braim, for a total cost of $6.6 million. If I’m reading this right that would be only $350,000 more to run the line,” said councillor Willoughby. “In the future, is it possible to run a line from Braim to Ohaton? That’s where I’m going with this. To me, that is important.” Mazure said that would be a bigger picture and couldn’t answer his question without consulting the commission or consultants. It would also have to be approved by the water commission. “To add Braim would be an increase of 17 per cent more water. In the grand scheme of things, it is fairly minor. The amount of residential hook-ups from
Armena to Ervick would have been about the same as the number of connections in Braim,” said Mazure. “It would be a similar comparison. I talked to someone from the water commission this morning and they don’t have any concerns about supplying us with water. We are still the small kids on the block when it comes to the commission.” The motion was carried unanimously. County notes
Councillor Cindy Trautman started the process of building a new lagoon for New Norway. “I move that Camrose County Council award the construction contract for the New Norway Wastewater Lagoon Rehabilitation, to Nu Edge Construction of Camrose for the tender price of $1,070,550 plus GST, with funding to come from a combination of a Local Improvement Levy (75 per cent) and MSI Capital Funding (25 per cent),” she said. That works out to about $660 per New Norway household a year for 20 years. The New Norway Fire Department requested authorization for the department to respond to Medical First Response calls under Alberta Health Services. That was carried with members to have training in place.
announced its decision to maintain the current support prices for butter and skim milk powder. As of Feb. 1, 2018, the support price for butter will remain at $8.0062 per kg and the support price for skim milk powder will remain at $4.5302 per kg. “Despite a small reduction in the cost of producing milk in Canada, we feel that for the sake of the industry’s stability, it is best to leave the support prices of butter and skim milk powder where they currently stand,” said Alistair Johnston, CDC chairman. The margin received by processors for butter purchased by the CDC under the Domestic Seasonality Program will remain unchanged. Carrying charges collected by the CDC to pay for the storage of normal butter stocks will also remain unchanged. The support price for butter is used by the CDC when buying and selling butter under its Domestic Seasonality Program. This program balances seasonal changes in demand on the domestic market. The Canadian Dairy Commission, a Crown corporation created in 1966, is a key facilitator within the Canadian dairy sector. It is mandated to provide efficient milk producers with the opportunity to get a fair return on their labour and investment, and to ensure that Canadian consumers are provided with adequate supplies of quality dairy products. The CDC helps design, implement, and administer policies and programs to support milk producers and processors.

Fundraiser for fire victims By Lori Larsen
After a devastating fire that took the home and belongings of Scotty Love and Jodi Chilson and four children, residents of Hardisty have rallied together to host a fundraising event in an effort to help the family get back on their feet. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13 at Hardisty Community Hall. Doors will open at 5 p.m. with dinner served at 6:30 p.m. followed by a live auction and Kids’ Raffle. During the Dec. 21 fire, the family lost Christmas presents, birthday presents, photos, mementos and, tragically, their beloved family dog, Charlie. When speaking of Jodi and Scotty, fellow residents and friends noted how devoted they are to their children and how Jodi, a busy mom of four, always lands on her feet. After a car accident left her daughter in a wheelchair, she does whatever it takes to ensure nothing holds her back. The community would like to do whatever they can to keep this fire from getting in the way of that. Donations for the live auction and Kids’ Raffle can be made by contacting Jo Kitto at 780-888-7302. Cash donations can be made at the ATB in a trust account, or you can support Hannah’s blossoming ski career by making a deposit into her trust account, also at the ATB. Donation receipts will be issued after the event. Tickets for the familyfriendly dinner and auction can be purchased in Hardisty at Rustic Stars, the Post Office, or by calling Lori Morrison at 780-888-1059 or Jo Kitto at 780-888-7302.
