Camrose Police Service Chief Mark Neufeld reminds us that simply locking your vehicle, not leaving it running while unattended, and removing all valuables from your car or truck could go a long way in reducing theft here in the City.

In 2017, a vehicle was stolen from outside a residence or business every 5.6 days in the City of Camrose. Fifty-one of the 65 vehicles were eventually recovered (in a variety of conditions). Fourteen of the missing vehicles have not been found. In many cases, insurance eased the financial burden of loss for these property owners. This, of course, ultimately translates into higher cost of coverage for all policy owners. Theft data, from these 65 crimes, shows 1997 to 2008 Ford trucks (22 stolen) and all years of Honda cars (five stolen) to be the most popular vehicles of choice for area thieves. A total of 43 trucks disappeared locally. Nine cars, eight SUVs, one van, two ATVs, one snowmobile and one boat also went missing. In addition, 101 vehicle break-ins were reported to CPS. Although this was lower from the previous two years, the number remains far too high, according to police investigators. Their stance is that if all valuables were removed from cars and trucks, break-ins would be significantly fewer in number. Camrose Police Service notes that vehicle theft is often a crime of opportunity when vehicles are left running, keys being left in the ignition or items are in plain view. Lock your vehicles and consider using readily available anti-theft measures or products to avoid losing your possessions. Big increases in thefts of motor vehicles occur when the mercury drops and people are warming up their vehicles. Anti-theft measures (a remote starter or a club device) would reduce thefts while allowing people to warm their vehicles.

Alberta’s Carey wins women’s Grand Slam By Murray Green
Team Carey of Calgary and Team De Cruz of Geneva, Switzerland won their first career curling Grand Slam titles at the Canadian Open in Camrose, Jan. 21. Team Carey earned a decisive 10-5 victory over Team Englot (Winnipeg) to collect $30,000 of the $125,000 women’s purse and qualifies for the Champions Cup, the final Grand Slam event of the season. The skip came through for the fans. “It is easier to make a hit than a draw in that situation because you don’t have to control your adrenaline, so I didn’t mind that. I had just thrown the same rock on the peel so I knew what it would do. I felt good and confident to make that one,” shared Chelsea Carey about her big scoring end. She was very excited with the victory. “It’s pretty amazing,” skip Carey said. “This event has the top 12 to 15 teams in the world here. To come out on top in a field like that is the ultimate.” The team hopes the momentum from the win carries onto the women’s provincial curling event. “We wanted to feel really good about ourselves after
this week, no matter what happened,” explained Carey. “It felt like we were playing well and getting better. It is still going to be tough. We lost the first game to Einarson here, so we have our work cut out for us, but we still feel good about it.” The rink has had a good season, but sometimes lacks the killer instinct in the final. “It feels good to finally win it. We have been in the playoffs, but didn’t get a win yet until today. We were due for one and we were finally able to put it together here, which is great.” Of the final four teams in the women’s and men’s finals, Team Carey was the only Alberta rink. “Winning in Alberta is special for us. We won the Scotties in Grande Prairie, so Alberta and the crowd here was phenomenal for us today and all week, so yes it was a lot of fun to win in your own province for sure.” Team De Cruz edged out reigning European champion Team Edin (Karlstad, Sweden) 5-3. The Swiss Olympic team also collects $30,000 of the $125,000 men’s purse and a berth in the Champions Cup in April.

Letters to the Editor Becoming an Elder
A gathering of 16 people, part of a loose-knit group who, when they feel like it, attend monthly gatherings for facilitated conversation and connection. On this occasion, the youngest person is in her thirties, the eldest in his eighties. Our January topic: new beginnings. We hear about New Year’s traditions in Scotland and Japan. In both countries, part of traditional New Year’s activities involve cleaning and clearing, getting everything sparkly clean to prepare for a new year. In both countries, part of the tradition is ringing bells. We hear how, in Edinburgh, joyous bells and chimes ring out across the city at midnight. The whole city feels celebratory. In Japan, bells ring 108 times. Each chime represents a passion or desire, and the bell chimes symbolize the purification from 108 types of delusions and sufferings accumulated in the past year. That too feels celebratory. ***
As people in our group speak of “new beginnings” on their minds this January, I’m noticing the seasons and cycles of different age groups. People in their thirties, forties and fifties are in the busy years of family and career. There are themes of what it means to be a parent of babies, children, young adults; what career pressures or changes they’re handling. Some are moving from employee to starting a business; one is moving from being an entrepreneur to being an employee. Several mention transitions of their young adult children, and what that means for them as parents. I flash back to me as a young mom, scrambling to keep up with job demands, trying to be a good parent. Never enough time, never enough done. As far ahead as I can imagine, all I see is stress and exhaustion. My mom says to me, “When you have little kids and you’re so busy and tired, you think it will go on forever. And then the kids grow up and leave home and you look back and wonder how that could have happened so fast.” On the day my mom says that, I find it hard to believe. But she is right. Those busy years whoosh by.
Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Cannabis concern
Is anyone concerned about the passage of Bill C-45–an act respecting cannabis and to amend the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the Criminal Code and other Acts? I am, and for the following reasons. In US states, where recreational use of marijuana has been legalized, the amount youth (ages 12 to 17) use has increased. Dr. Amy Porath, director of Research and Policy at the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction says, “There should be no cannabis use below age of 25 if you want to protect brain development.” Following legalization of marijuana, Colorado saw four times as many marijuana-intoxicated teenagers in the ER and urgent care centres. Legalization leads to normalization and teens do not consider the risks to their health. Chronic marijuana use
that begins in adolescence is also associated with the development of mood and anxiety disorders later in life. Will we see escalating health care costs? Another consideration is the difficulty in detecting the level of impairment following marijuana use. Colorado noted an increase in marijuana-related traffic deaths since legalization of marijuana. We visit our daughter in Colorado twice a year and have noticed some of the negative social aspects of legalizing marijuana– more homelessness and “street people.” (During the summer there is actually a “community” of people living behind the local library, using the library’s public washrooms for personal hygiene care and the library’s outdoor electrical outlets to recharge their cell phones). Taking a walk through Olde Town Arvada is an invitation to be accosted by panhandlers wanting money “for a joint”. Neighbours rent their home to out-of-state tourists who spend the whole weekend smoking “pot” and making it impossible for our grandchildren to play in their own backyard. Teachers find their middle school students using marijuana during lunch break. Does this sound like progress? Bill C-45 is now being reviewed in the Senate. If you have concerns, con-
tact our Alberta Senators: Douglas Black, Elaine McCoy, Claudette Tardif, Scott Tannas and Betty Unger. Gail Schulte, Camrose Colour match
In regards to the Jan. 16 letter by George Morlidge of Okotoks. I’ve done a little research and found some paint codes for him. The “salmon” colour as he refers to is actually called “Burgundy Mist.” GM’s code in 1959 for this colour is “N.” PPG has a paint code for this colour is 50536. There is only one silver for 1959 in the Oldsmobile line up. It is called “Silver Mist.” GM’s code for this colour is “B.” The PPG code for this silver is 31827. That being said, it may be in his best interest to try to retail any samples of the original paint colours if possible. With today’s paint technology, some paint companies have a colour match “gun” where the unit can be placed on the actual colour and a formula can be mixed with great accuracy. Hope this helps with his project, feel free to have him contact me if he wishes to talk some more. Daymion Weiss, Daysland Editor’s note: This information has been passed on to George Morlidge.

Back to the gathering. People in their sixties, seventies and eighties are getting used to the idea of less external pressures. They’re asking questions like, “With fewer things I have to do, what do I choose to do?” They speak of losses (loss of precious people, loss of position, sometimes loss of capacities). They speak of the challenge of not planning and controlling; not being needed (for some a joy, for others a loss); of shifting from being a leader to being a mentor. I remember a poem. Becoming an Elder by Cathy Carmody. Leaving behind my journey of struggling and racing through the white water of many rivers, I become the river, creating my own unique way. Leaving behind my self-imposed role as a tree upon which others have leaned, I now become the wind, with the freedom to blow whenever and wherever I choose. Leaving behind the boxes I’ve created in my life, crammed with roles, responsibilities, rules and fears, I become the wild and unpredictable space within which flowers sprout and grow. Leaving behind the years of yearning for others to see me as somebody, I soften into becoming my future, with permission from SELF to continually unfold as I choose, without concern for how others may see me. Leaving behind years of telling and teaching, I become instead a mirror into which others can peer and view reflections of themselves to consider. Leaving behind the urge to provide answers for others, I become–in the silence of this forest retreat–the question. Leaving behind the rigor of my intellect, I become a single candle in the darkness, offering myself as a beacon for others to create their own path. I become an elder. Cathy Carmody died in 2016. She gave permission for others to share her poem as long as she is credited as author. ***

Critters take to ice for Hospice WEBSITE By Lori Larsen
Camrose and area residents are encouraged to bring out family and friends to a charity hockey game on Feb. 8 at the Encana Arena, when the CFCW Critters take on the Camrose Minor Hockey coaches to raise funds for the Hospice Society of Camrose and District. “When I was younger, I attended a Critters game,” said Hospice Society of Camrose and District director Pat Carlson, of how the idea of getting the CFCW Critters for a fundraiser hockey game came about. “They (Critters) go to different towns and do fundraisers and I remember it was a lot of fun, like watching the Harlem Globetrotters, only hockey.” Carlson inquired as to whether or not the CFCW Critters would come to Camrose for a fundraiser for the Hospice, filled out an application and the ball, or puck, was rolling. “They are so amazing to work with.” Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. at which time the two teams will be introduced, then attendees will be given an opportunity to bid on both teams coaching position for the game, during a live auction.
…or new websites created from your ideas and our talent. We build easy-to-navigate sites that people will want to use and explore. Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Hospice Society of Camrose and District directors Pat Carlson, left and John Person, right, wait for Svend Green to drop the puck at centre ice, in preparation for the upcoming charity game, where the CFCW Critters take on Camrose Minor Hockey coaches. The game will be held on Feb. 8 at the Encana Arena. All money raised during the event will be donated to the Hospice Society of Camrose and District.
“Neither team has a designated coach for the game,” explained Carlson. “We are going to have a live auction before the game to auction off the position of the team coaches. So, the highest bidder can either be the coach or pick someone else to be the coach.” The CMHA coaches team will be comprised of the following players: Shane Ashton, Josh Banack, Jordan Bassett, Andre Blanchette, Travis Csernyanszki, Roland Desjardin,

Key traits of a good financial advisor Metro
Professional financial advice can be a valuable asset for men and women focused on their futures. Effective financial advisors help their clients navigate the sometimes confusing waters of personal finance, helping them to achieve both short- and long-term goals. Financial advisors can help men and women protect their savings, make smart investments and grow their wealth. What defines the right financial advisor depends on the client. Some financial advisors’ strategies may not appeal to all prospective clients, so it’s important that men and women vet financial professionals before trusting them with their hardearned money. The following are a few things adults can look for as they begin
searching for someone to help them secure their financial futures. Credentials: Consumers may benefit by selecting a person who is just a financial planner, and not an accountant or insurance advisor. A financial advisor who is a certified financial planner (CFP) is licensed and regulated, and he or she has taken mandatory classes on the various aspects of financial planning. Humility and an ability to listen: Financial advisors need to be in-tune with their clients’ needs, rather than putting their own best interests first. Northstar Financial Planning notes that good advisors lend support and will ride out the ups and downs of financial decisions. R ecommendations: Advisors who have a reli-

PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE
The Rose City Roots Music Society are presenting the music of Martin Kerr in its next concert series on Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. The singer from England moved to Edmonton to get married and embedded himself in Canadian music. For more than 10 years, Kerr has been a fixture of the Edmonton music scene, playing in coffee houses and clubs, as a regular busker at the City’s farmers’ market and on the private house concert circuit, performing more than 150 shows a year. He has carved out a niche as one of the most talented, approachable, connective and inventive musicians in the Alberta capital.

Speed Control salutes Canadian music
ANNOUNCEMENT
By Murray Green
Three teachers from the Yukon travel coast to coast instructing students on the finer points of music. In their spare time, they travel across country singing the best songs from Canadian artists. Brothers Graeme Peters and Jody Peters launched the band Speed Control in 2010 as a regular band. “We played at bars across the country and lost $5,000. We decided we didn’t ever want to do that again,” laughed Jody. “Graeme played in a jazz band before and travelled to schools teaching the history of jazz. “We are all elementary school teachers, so we thought why not teach the history of rock and roll because that is what we love doing.” They started to tribute music icons from the 1960s to the early 2000s. Speed Control is coming to the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Sunday, Jan. 28. This performance is part of the free admission family series. “We played a few schools and it built from there. This year we have 193 school shows throughout BC and Alberta. So from Monday to Friday we are in the schools and on the weekend we play some of our own material,” explained Jody. Some of the most innovative music in the world has come from Canadian musicians. Follow Speed Control through the last 50 years of famous Canadian artists and how their music affected others of both their own generation and those to come. “We started writing the history of rock and roll, it was surprising how many of the top bands and songs were from Canadians. We went back to Paul Anka for the ’60s, then Steppenwolf, Guess Who, Bachman Turner Overdrive, April Wine, Trooper, Loverboy, Rush, Bryan Adams and it is just endless.” From Anka to the Barenaked Ladies, young audiences will learn how Canada has become a major force in popular music in this smart, humorous and exciting show. “It is awesome when we compare American and Canadian music and how many hits were from Canada. We normally play one artist per decade and talk about how that group had so much influence in music. It is a rocking historical journey. In the 2000s, a lot of rockpunk bands emerged like Sum 41 and Simple Plan. We play one of our songs that we

ust like a sunny backyard and a tall glass of iced tea, Scott’s Quality Lawn Care and Pro-Lawn are a perfect match – made for each other. The two companies are announcing the sale of Pro-Lawn to Scott’s Quality Lawn Care. “Scott brings many years of experience and professionalism to lawn care. This new venture will fit well into his existing business,” wrote the owners of Pro-Lawn in a letter to their customers announcing the sale of the business. To help make the transition run smoothly, Debbie, Pro-Lawn’s office manager the past three years, will join Scott’s Pro-Lawn so that customers can reach a familiar person when calling or emailing. “Our plan is to deliver the same high quality and effective product that the late Don Scabar perfected,” said Scott, “while continuing to improve the customer experience. My wife Meagan and I look forward to working alongside Debbie, who has become the trusted voice of Pro-Lawn.” “We have believed in the Pro-Lawn product since 2011, our first year of operation in Camrose. We have always used Pro-Lawn on our own property and have recommended the Pro-Lawn service to our valued clients throughout the years.” “Meagan and I would also like to thank Fred, Joan and Jason Cocar and Dale Bush for the professionalism they embodied during the sale of their business. We wish them every success in all of their future endeavors.”
wrote in the style of Simple Plan,” continued Jody. “We start and end the show with our music, so people can hear our regular music. Being from Yukon, it was hard to get our own music out there. When we started the school shows, we always book-ended them with our songs. They flow seemingly well with the history of rock and roll, so it’s a nice way to get our songs heard.” That has led to extra
performances and music camps for children during the summer. “We even had adult rock camps along with music festivals. We substitute teach and play music, pretty much the best of both worlds,” said Jody. “It will be our first time in Camrose. Our shows are pretty much the same in schools as it is in the theatre. We just play rock and get the audience involved. The only difference is the sound quality.”

Linda Ruth Peters Verlyn Olson with Wilde and Company partners Kyle Bodnarchuk, Colette Miller, Curtis Palichuk, Renée Senko
We recently sat down with our business associate, Verlyn Olson QC, for a candid Q & A session to discuss the creation of Olson Law, and its successful pairing with Wilde & Company. He provided some engaging responses to our questions: What has Verlyn Olson QC been up to for the last couple of years? After leaving government in the spring of 2015, I spent about ten months recovering from several islet cell transplants. Since then, with renewed energy and good health, I have had a very exciting time establishing Olson Law as part of a multidisciplinary firm. Partnering with Wilde & Company, an accounting firm headquartered in Vegreville, we are breaking new ground. Being able to provide legal, accounting and other services to mutual clients is an innovative and winning model for clients. We also have independent clients and we are very respectful of their relationships with other accounting firms.
Do you have areas of preferred practice that you are focusing on? I have always had a passion for working with farm families and helping them with succession planning, estates and, of course, their Wills. We also focus on real estate and a variety of corporate commercial work such as incorporations, reorganizations and a range of other legal services.
Tell us about the Olson Law Team. Kirstyn Rau, who also lives in Camrose, and Michelle Fong, originally from Edmonton, are my very capable articling students who will be called to the Bar this June. Shauna Rutherford and Shonna Blonke, both long-term Vegreville residents with extensive legal experience, provide exceptional administrative support.

What about the fit with Wilde & Company? We are aligned with our core values of accountability, respect and generosity and love helping people with personal and business success. Wilde & Company was founded 56 years ago by Jerry Wilde who actually began his accounting career in Camrose. The culture is progressive, caring and fun, which makes it a perfect fit and it is very easy to work together.
Interesting tidbits about Verlyn? I love living in rural Alberta and have deep roots there, which is why I also really enjoyed my time in government, especially as Agricultural Minister. My wife Mardell and I live on the original family homestead outside of Camrose where our sons and daughter grew up. My passions still include hockey, baseball, music and, of course, the Nordlys Film Festival of which we are excited to be a part. Our favorite holiday destination is our cottage in Trinity, Newfoundland. 4902-50 Street, Vegreville, AB T9C 1R1 Phone 780.632.3673 Fax 780.632.6133 Toll Free 800.808.0998

All proceeds from ticket sales, 50/50 draw, live auction for coach position and a silent auction to be held that night, will go towards the Hospice Society of Camrose and Dis-
trict. There will also be door prizes. “This will be a good, clean family show and the Hospice is all about taking care of our community and supporting families during their time of need,” said Carlson. The Hospice Society of Camrose and District continues to provide holistic care to those who are
dying and their loved ones through trained volunteers in end of life and palliative care. The Hospice also provides a host of programs aimed at assisting people who have suffered a loss in their lives. As well as ensuring the care of residents in Camrose and area, the Hospice has a goal of having a freestanding hospice facility for those who
would like to die in a comfortable, peaceful and supportive setting. “We have really high hopes of securing the land in 2018 and we need funds to do that; but we will also continue doing all the good work the Hospice provides, including grief and bereavement and palliative care work,” added Carlson. Come and watch your

The automotive section of
Staal added modern electrical to 1951 Chev By Murray Green
Wayne Staal found his 1951 Chevrolet truck near Bashaw by his sister’s place. The Camrose area resident found it sitting unused and paid $500 for it. Soon he began to restore it. He used as many original parts as he could by keeping the hood, doors and cab. “The rest is new metal. I started with a 1983 S-10 frame, re-built it and then added a 350 and made it a 383 stroker motor. I cut two-and-a-half inches off the roof to lower the cab because I wanted a chopped vehicle,” explained Wayne. “It made it look longer and it was a three-window model, not the five-window, so it was easier to chop. I also did a lot of modifications on the running boards.” Advance-Design was a truck series by Chevrolet, their first major redesign after the Second World War. It was billed as a larger, stronger and sleeker design in comparison to the earlier AK Series. First available on Saturday, Jun. 28, 1947, these trucks were sold with various minor changes over the years until Mar. 25, 1955, when the Task Force Series trucks replaced the aging Advance-Design model. Telescopic shock absorbers replaced leveraction type in 1950. It was the last year for driver’s side cowl vent, its handle was now flat steel, not maroon knob as in previous years. “I modified the roll pan, put a 1954 bumper on it and tucked everything in. It is appraised at $140,000 now. Usually they are worth about half that, but because of the things I added to it, the truck is worth more than the average truck. It has a brand new interior,” said Wayne. The same basic design family was used for all of its trucks including the Suburban, panel trucks, canopy express and Cab Over. The cab overs used the same basic cab configuration and similar grille, but used a shorter and taller hood and dif-

ferent fenders. The unique Cab Over fenders and hood required a custom cowl area, which makes the Cab Over Engine cabs and normal truck cabs incompatible with one another, while all truck cabs of all weights interchange. “I wanted an old truck, but with many of the modern conveniences such as all-new electrical so I could run power windows and locks. It runs well and is more fun to drive. I can go anywhere with it,” said Wayne. “I lowered it, four inches in the front, five in the back, so it drives a little nicer.” From 1947 until 1955, Chevrolet trucks were number one in sales in the United States, with rebranded versions sold at GMC locations. “I’m a Chev guy, so I wanted a truck similar to this one. When this one came up, I jumped at it. It took me about seven years to complete. I finished about three years ago,” added Wayne.
There are three main sizes of this truck: the half ton, three-quarter ton and full ton with short and long wheelbases. “I did all of the mechanical things myself, but I had help with the body work. I tried myself, but ran into some problems.” In 1951, doors had vent windows. A mid-year change went from nine board bed to eight boards per bed. It was the last year for the 80 MPH speedometer, chrome window handle knobs and chrome wiper knob. “Most of the parts they reproduce now, so it makes it a lot easier to fix up a truck like this. You could probably build one of these trucks out of a catalogue now. However, I started mine before they began doing that,” said Wayne. “It was pretty easy to work on because the parts are available. That was another reason for picking this truck to fix. It takes a lot longer if you are always hunting for parts.”
A 216 cubic inch motor was standard on most models between 1947 and 1953. In 1954, additional motors 235 and 261 were added to the 216.
“I tried to get a part from every series of truck from 1947 to 2000, so it is both historical and has modern advances as well. I hit every decade.”

Gratitude in the form of giving By Lori Larsen
Finding strength, not so much in what you do, but what you can do for others, can often be the saving grace in helping some people through adversity. Early in life, Erhard Pinno discovered that acts of selflessness and kindness are what truly make a difference in peoples’ lives. Born in Germanoccupied Poland in 1942, Erhard recalls the suffering endured by many during the Great Escape between 1945-46. “It is a story I have heard many times since childhood and is a constant reminder of God’s goodness, the sacrificial love of my Oma and Aunt, and the unexpected kindnesses of many Polish people. I would not have survived this terrible tragedy without them.”
years together giving back to the communities they were part of, including Camrose, where they moved to in 1979. “We arrived in Camrose in August 1979. I immediately joined the Refugee Support committee as we prepared to welcome the “boat people,” the Tao family–mom, dad, four boys, a niece and grandmother,” remembered Erhard. “Many refugee families joined the Camrose community since that time. In 2011, Joe McMorrow of the Catholic Church, Alan Ford of the United Church and I from Messiah Lutheran church, had the desire to work more ecumenically in refugee sponsorship. This led to the creation of the Camrose Refugee Coordinating Committee (CRCC) which, in the fall of 2017, evolved into the Camrose Refugee
Submitted Photo Erhard Pinno enjoys the wonderful feeling he gets from the generosity he sees from Camrosians.
Through his own story of survival and the kindness of others, Erhard learned early that helping others is a gift granted to all of us. “None of us can solve these big problems but I have been encouraged by the many people and organizations in this community who work hard to help the needy at the local, national, and international level.” In 1952, Erhard and his family were reunited in Canada, where once again he bore witness to the warmth of others. “Pastor Alex Propp and some congregation members of St. Paul Lutheran church in Yorkton dropped off survival packages on a weekly basis during that first cold winter of 1952-53 in Yorkton,” remarked Erhard. “The Emil Kohlert family dropped off a gallon of milk every week. When springtime came they decided to drop off the cow.” In 1965, Erhard married Lorene and the two spent 46
Centre (CRC) with Yvonne Myrehaug as coordinator.” Erhard speaks fondly of the good work the Refugee Centre provides relating back to the graciousness he received as a new Canadian. “I have been so blessed to drop off many survival packages to refugees from many countries.” Erhard became the director for Admissions for the Camrose Lutheran College (University of Alberta Agustana) and Lorene remained active in the music ministry of the Messiah Lutheran Church, along with volunteering with many not-for-profit organizations. Lorene began a long struggle with kidney disease that saw her in dialysis for three years, eventually receiving a kidney transplant in December 1997. Lorene passed away in 2011. Beyond the couple’s already giving spirit, the very personal involvement of struggling with the disease deepened their con-
viction to help where they could by dedicating their own time and energy to the Kidney Foundation. “Over 20 years I’ve been canvassing (15 years coordinating) the annual March door-to-door campaign,” noted Erhard adding that it brings him great joy to knock on doors of residents and businesses and pick up annual cheques. “There is the little child who asks me to wait while she looks for a few loonies; the generous donor who increased his annual donation by a $100, relating that times are tough for some people and those of us who have resources need to step up; the lady who has been chronically ill for years, but is always ready with a smile and a cheque; the prepared donor who expresses disappointment because she thought that I may have forgotten her this year.” Erhard’s stories make one think twice about asking others to give, something that is often deemed as daunting. Erhard’s generous heart and passion for giving is seen in other areas of Camrose as well. He is a devote supporter and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and was one of the co-founders of the Camrose ReStore. “In 1997 and 1999, I helped with the builds, then in 2001 I became the chair of the board, and a full-time volunteer involved in every aspect of building a Habitat house.” Realizing the future of Habitat builds in Camrose might not be possible without stable funding, Erhard, along with Bernie Williams, surveyed the business community resulting in some positive results. “The board approved the purchase of the property, we held weekly garage sales for a year and projected that we could pay off the cost for the build within 10 years. I spent most of my time in 2005 fundraising for the ReStore. The community responded generously and the ReStore was built, dedicated, and paid for by May 2006.” Profits from the ReStore have since been applied to every Habitat House built in Camrose. “The funding, building and success of the ReStore is one of the many miracles that happen in Camrose on a regular basis.” In speaking of miracles, Erhard’s own story adds substance to the adage, ‘It is far better to give than to receive.’ Who do you know as a community Difference Maker? Bull Congress best show yet By Lori Larsen
The 32nd Canadian Bull Congress promises to be the best show yet, according to Camrose Regional Exhibition board president Mark Schneider. “We have maxed out for both exhibitors as well as producers and have folks on the waiting list. We are seeing many new exhibitors this year which is great for our business and for all who attend.” The event takes place from Jan. 26 to 27 and showcases up and coming leaders in the Agriculture industry, as they enter the show ring with some of this year’s finest stock. “This event is also great for the city as we have exhibitors and producers coming in from all over and spending time in our beautiful city,” added Schneider. “This, of course, will equate to more spending in the city which is a boost for businesses in Camrose.” The show will officially open to the public on Friday, Jan. 26 at 9 a.m. with the junior heifer show beginning at 10 a.m. and the herd bull walk, single purebred heifer, 4-H heifer project and celebrity sponsor show at 1 p.m. Friday evening offers a tasty treat at the annual Steak Challenge and Taste
of Beef Banquet beginning at 6 p.m. The evening includes a banquet dinner, auction for STARS and entertainment by stand-up First Nations comedian, Howie Miller. Saturday, Jan. 27 show begins at 9 a.m. with the 4-H Program followed by the Junior Bull Show at 10 a.m. The ranchers’ Choice Single Bull Show takes place at 1 p.m. with the Marketing Award Presentation (in the show ring), the ever popular Pen of Three Bull Show and the Senior and Mature Bull Show beginning at 2 p.m. Bull-nanza takes to the ring at 3:30 p.m. “This event provides a unique opportunity that allows our purebred producers and an agriculture based trade show to be in front of their target audience and will enable them to build their business. “If you have never attended this event, I would encourage you to attend and learn more about the agriculture industry.” Come and take in all or some of the Bull Congress and experience for yourself a premier cattle event. Newest police constable proposes day home regulations By Lori Larsen
Newest member of Camrose Police Service, Constable Pamela McTavish recently graduated from a year of classroom and field training and has quickly taken a positive role in the community as one of Camrose’s finest. Prior to a decision to apply with Camrose Police Service, McTavish, an eight-year resident of Camrose, worked in physiotherapy. During a practicum experience, McTavish had the opportunity to work with Edmonton Police Service as an assistant to the athletic director, where she assisted with recruit training and the annual fitness training. “I really enjoyed that and it became ingrained in my memories as one of the top things I had done,” said Const. McTavish. While at the time, McTavish wasn’t interested in applying to the police force, over the next few years she recognized that working with EPS had been a career highlight, so she pursued the possibility of applying with Camrose Police Service. When the application process opened in Camrose, McTavish began the process. During this time, she decided to withdraw her application so she and her husband could have their third child. During the latter part of her pregnancy, she began the application process again and was accepted into training. “By the time I started class, our baby was four months old,” smiled McTavish. “It was a little crazy.” The first 24 weeks of police training, which entailed academy foundations, took place in Edmonton, Monday through Friday, allowing McTavish time at home with her husband and three children on the weekends. “My husband took the remainder of the parental leave which worked out perfect, because our children didn’t have to deal with going to a day home with mom (Pam) gone at the same time,” she noted. The second block of training saw McTavish back in Camrose for six months, working in the community on the streets with a field training officer. Her final two weeks of training was once again in Edmonton, learning about the specialty units needed as resources to police officers, then graduation on Nov. 24, 2017. McTavish admits there was a bit of an adjustment to working 12-hour shifts, but claims that having three young children, with sporadic sleeping patterns,
had prepared her for sleep interruptions anyway. Thankful for the support she received from her husband, family and friends during her training and ultimately a career change, McTavish added, “It was a group project.” Day home bylaw
As part of police training, all recruits are responsible for completing a SARA project aimed at developing the officers’ skills on identifying and ultimately discovering methods to solve ongoing problems in the community.
checks and child welfare checks. The criminal record and child welfare checks would be required of all people who come in contact with the children while at the day home–anybody who would be in the presence of the children in the day home. “As well, the day home would have to meet the requirements for a regular business licence,” added McTavish. “This includes those from Alberta Health Services, Camrose Fire Department, City of
However, if a parent/ guardian chooses a day home that does not have a business licence, the burden is then on the parent/ guardian.” McTavish said the amendment to the bylaw would assist parents by saving them a lot of questions about the day home; instead they could merely inquire as to whether or not the day home has a business licence. “If they don’t have one, it could influence the parent/guardian’s decision on choosing that day home.”
the day home not meeting the bylaw handled by the bylaw officer and complaints that might be criminal in nature handled by the police. “It would offer our community a minimum standard for child care where there was nothing before,” said McTavish, “And helps parents with a little more information when they are in the process of checking out day homes.” Const. McTavish presented the proposed bylaw change to City of Camrose council on Jan. 15 during the regular council meeting. Council requested more information prior to the item being brought back for first reading. Survey
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Constable Pamela McTavish, Camrose Police Service’s newest police officer, focuses attention on proposing changes to the existing City Business Bylaw to include wording for the regulation of unregistered, private day homes.
“During my first couple of weeks in field training, I was getting used to things and asking the other constables where they saw common issues in Camrose–areas that I might be able to use as my SARA project that would be beneficial to the community,” said McTavish. McTavish presented ideas to the deputy chief who, in turn, made some suggestions, eventually determining a project that would be beneficial to the community as a whole. “The project involved amending the current business bylaw to include specific wording for the regulation of unregistered, private day homes. This would require these day homes to obtain a business licence along with which would come certain requirements they would have to meet to get that licence,” explained McTavish. The specific requirements (for the day home) would include an up-to-date first aid certificate, proof of insurance for transporting children, criminal record
Camrose, all the present business bylaw requirements. If any came back with negative results, the applicant would not be eligible for the business licence.” Const. McTavish went on to explain that presently, there is provincial legislation that regulates registered day homes (day cares), but nothing provincially or locally that specifically outlines requirements for private unregistered day homes. Amendments to the business licence bylaw would give parents/guardians who are looking into possible day homes a resource to ensure the provider has obtained a business licence, therefore holding it to all the requirements under that licence. “If the day home produces a business licence, then the parent/guardian would at least know the day home has met those requirements. There would be a little less burden on parent/guardian to do all those background checks.
Const. McTavish added that child welfare checks have to be done by the person seeking the service. “The day home operators (or others in contact with the children), cannot do a child welfare check on themselves. It has to be done by the parent or guardian seeking the service.” The proposed amendment to the bylaw has been approved by Camrose Police Commission and awaits approval by City of Camrose council, with suggestions from administration. Generally, the amendment to the bylaw would be another form of proactive policing, with enforcement of complaints about
A survey was conducted on the residents of Camrose, as part of the research on the implementation of the amendment to the City of Camrose business licence bylaw, to include regulations for unregistered private bylaws. The survey revealed the following results. Regarding the question “Would this bylaw be beneficial to the City of Camrose?” 90 per cent of respondents answered yes, two per cent answered no and eight per cent had no response. In response to the question, “Would you be more inclined to send your children to a private day home with a business licence over an unlicenced day home?” 92 per cent answered yes, two per cent answered no and six per cent had no response. The results for the question, “Are you in favor of a private day home bylaw?” indicated 98 per cent of respondents answered yes and two per cent answered no. Finally, in response to the question, “Do you feel that the requirements for the private day home licence are appropriate? ” 96 per cent of the respondents said yes, two per cent said no and two per cent had no response. Of the respondents, 60 per cent were female and 40 per cent male, 29 per cent were ages 20 to 29, 19 per cent 30 to 39, 27 per cent 40 to 49, 23 per cent 50 to 59 and two per cent were 60 and over.
