Camrose Police Service Chief Mark Neufeld reminds us that simply locking your vehicle, not leaving it running while unattended, and removing all valuables from your car or truck could go a long way in reducing theft here in the City.

In 2017, a vehicle was stolen from outside a residence or business every 5.6 days in the City of Camrose. Fifty-one of the 65 vehicles were eventually recovered (in a variety of conditions). Fourteen of the missing vehicles have not been found. In many cases, insurance eased the financial burden of loss for these property owners. This, of course, ultimately translates into higher cost of coverage for all policy owners. Theft data, from these 65 crimes, shows 1997 to 2008 Ford trucks (22 stolen) and all years of Honda cars (five stolen) to be the most popular vehicles of choice for area thieves. A total of 43 trucks disappeared locally. Nine cars, eight SUVs, one van, two ATVs, one snowmobile and one boat also went missing. In addition, 101 vehicle break-ins were reported to CPS. Although this was lower from the previous two years, the number remains far too high, according to police investigators. Their stance is that if all valuables were removed from cars and trucks, break-ins would be significantly fewer in number. Camrose Police Service notes that vehicle theft is often a crime of opportunity when vehicles are left running, keys being left in the ignition or items are in plain view. Lock your vehicles and consider using readily available anti-theft measures or products to avoid losing your possessions. Big increases in thefts of motor vehicles occur when the mercury drops and people are warming up their vehicles. Anti-theft measures (a remote starter or a club device) would reduce thefts while allowing people to warm their vehicles.
