The 32nd annual world class

The Canadian Bull Congress takes place on January 26 and 27 at the Camrose Regional Exhibition. Expert cattlemen and women from across Canada will be attending this premiere event in the livestock industry. Organizers have once again put together an informative and interesting lineup of events and activities including: purebred cattle displays, purebred bull and heifer shows, pen-of-three bull show, herd bull walk, an agri-business trade show, Bull-Nanza, 4-H programs, and the ever popular Taste of Beef banquet, featuring entertainment by comedian Howie Miller.

Inside...

A variety of merchandise and services: Farm supplies and equipment, homes, accountants, entertainment, building supplies, vehicles, real estate, and more!

January 23 and 24 will be also be very popular days for the youngest Congress attendees. Education days will kick off the activities at the Bull Congress. Children from both rural and urban schools will have opportunities to get genuine “hands on” experience at various education stations set up to give them a close look at animals and where the food they eat originates. Stations include: farm safety, auctioneering, ear tagging, a milking station and a vet station. Last year more than 600 school age children participated in this fun and informative program.

WATERSHED ATLAS

Murray Green, Camrose Booster The Battle River Watershed Alliance staff of Nathalie Stanley Olson, Sarah Skinner, front, and David Samm, third from right, delivered new atlas books called Traversing Terrain and Experience to the Camrose County council on Jan. 9. The Battle River Watershed Alliance offered pie and ice cream to councillors in exchange of storing the books for a couple of months. The atlas is available at the BRWA office and at local schools, and libraries. County councillors from left to right are Greg Gilliespie, Brian Willoughby, Trevor Miller, Doug Lyseng, Jack Lyle, Cindy Trautman and Reeve Don Gregorwich.

Camrose County councillors decided to close a bridge to heavy traffic, rather than spend costly repairs, at the Jan. 9 regular council meeting. Zach Mazure and Jeri Smith of the public works department reported MPA Engineering advised that during a bridge inspection maintenance training session it was observed that one of the caps on Bridge File 06879 is badly crushed. It is located just north of Camrose. MPA said the crossing should be closed, or posted down to a three tonne weight limit. Councillor Trevor Miller moved that “Camrose County Council place a weight restriction to a maximum of three tonne on Bridge BF06879 located on an agricultural road, Range Road 203 just north of Township Road 472.” On Dec. 7, 2017, MPA Engineering contacted public works administration to inform them that during a Bridge Inspection Maintenance (BIM) training session within Camrose County, it was observed that one of the caps was badly crushed. This bridge was inspected in 2016, however, the water level was too high to get under the bridge to see the whole cap. The crushed cap is in the centre of the bridge. Farmers and oil companies will still have access to either side of the bridge, but the detour will consist of two miles of additional traveling. This bridge file was not listed for repairs or replacement in 2018. Councillors debated if the road should be closed now instead of reducing the weight. “We have a long list of bridges on fairly busy roads that we would need to spend money on long before we would even consider repairing this bridge,” said County administrator Paul King. “Reducing the weight and having it inspected by Alberta Transportation regularly will increase its lifespan.” At the current time, a max weight limit of three tonne notification has been placed on either side of the bridge structure.

Cow-calf survey compares industry By Murray Green

Do you wonder how your cow-calf operation compares with others in your region, province or herd size range on matters like conception rate and weaning weight? A joint effort representing the cow-calf industry from BC to Manitoba is helping Western Canadian cattle producers answer those questions. By participating in the second Western Canadian Cow-Calf Survey, producers can choose to receive a complementary report that allows them to compare their own operation with benchmarks (average numbers from a region). The survey takes about 45 to 60 minutes to complete and asks questions related to the 2016 breeding season all the way through to weaning of 2017 calf crop, as well as typical management practices. Many of the questions are the quick check-box style. Any question a producer is unable to answer can be left blank. As a thank you for the time taken to complete the survey, participants will receive up to $50 in gift cards, in addition to the complementary report. The complementary report will help producers see the aspects of their operation that they’re doing exceptionally well in, and the areas that have the greatest room for improvement. For example, the report will show a producer whether the conception rates of his cows in 2016 was higher or lower than nearby herds and herds of a similar size. That way, he or she will know whether to work with their veterinarian, nutritionist and/or regional extension specialist to have fewer of their cows come home from pasture open, or if other production goals are a higher priority for them to focus on to improve their productivity and profitability. “This survey is being conducted to generate up-todate production benchmarks for producers, get a better understanding of what producers were doing on their operations and determine ways to improve the productive efficiency of the industry,” said Barry Yaremcio, beef/forage specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. “Ontario and Atlantic Canada producers are completing a similar survey this fall and it’ll be interesting to see if there are management differences among the three regions.” For more information, or to complete the survey online, go to http://wbdc. sk.ca/wcccs.htm.
