Picture yourself sitting in the comfort and allure of the Bailey Theatre this weekend, watching an Oscar award-winning film (Best Actress) produced and directed in 1929, at the height of the silent movie era. Or, imagine the excitement of knowing that when you watch the 2015 Icelandic film, Virgin Mountain, showing at 7:15 p.m. on Friday evening, the filmmaker may well be sitting a few seats or a row or two away from you. Incidentally, a variety of other filmmakers will also be in attendance as their productions hit the big screen! These same individuals will remain on hand for questions and dialogue. The non-stop weekend will include numerous films, official opening and closing ceremonies and musical entertainment. Read more about the Nordlys Film and Arts Festival on page 20.

Letters to the Editor A Valentine experiment

This week is one of my favourite issues of The Camrose Booster – the one with little Valentine messages sprinkled throughout. I read every one, smiling. So much affection. So much whimsy. So much love. Of course, it’s fun to see Valentines to or from people I cherish. But it’s an uplift simply to see all the lovers, family members, friends and co-workers sending these upbeat little love messages to one another. Does something nice to see public expressions of love. ***

Valentine’s Day reminds me of a television interview I once saw with novelist and Nobel prizewinner Toni Morrison. One of her best-known books is entitled (appropriately for this week) Beloved. Here is a point Toni Morrison made during the interview. She was talking about how we express love to children. She said that when her children were young, she really wanted to be a good mother who made sure her children were cared for. As part of that care, whenever she looked at her children, the first thing she did was check to make sure that their faces were clean, their clothes were presentable, their socks matched, and so on. One day she realized two things. First, in effect, whenever she looked at her children, in her very first glance she was looking for flaws, for something wrong. That realization made her uncomfortable. The second realization shocked her. She realized that when her children looked back at her, she was always frowning. The expression on her face looked like she thought something was wrong with them. Because of her most frequent first facial expression, they believed that she disapproved of them. On the day she had that realization, she made a resolution. From that point forward, whenever she saw her children, or anyone else, she made sure that, before she did or said anything else, she would first look at them with eyes of love. ***

On the day I saw that interview, I made a similar resolution: that, when I saw someone I care about, before I do anything else, I would look at them with eyes of love. I didn’t always remember. Some days if I was particularly cranky I was not even sure I wanted to remember. But I remembered often enough to have discovered something interesting. When I consciously and instantly chose to look at someone with eyes of love as soon as I saw them, something changed in me. It’s like my heart softened and I tapped into a wellspring of affection. And, I suspect, that change in me sometimes changed whatever happened next.

Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Camrose transit

I’d like to thank the mayor and council for recognizing my service to the Camrose Transit Advisory Committee. Their funding and support is important in making transit a success. I feel Camrose has built a cost-effective and functional transit service using taxi tokens. Some 20,000 costshared rides are being provided annually to people in need. The token system was truly a community effort and has involved many people and hopefully I’d like to recognize all of them. First, Malcolm Boyd and city administration have worked with and actively supported CTAC, even though this is a small part of their many responsibilities. I’d also thank Darren Lockhart and the city accounting department who imaginatively accommodated the payment systems and took on added tasks. Vision Credit Union, and particularly the cashiers, deserves special thanks for its service to the community in redeeming the tokens. I’d like to thank Yvonne Allan who worked to

organize the 30 or so social agencies that hand out the tokens to their clients and I’d like to thank the agencies for their work. The taxi companies that accept the tokens as payment deserve thanks for their positive community approach and acceptance of tokens as payment. Lastly, I’d like to thank the other members of CTAC for their hard work and support. No transit system is perfect, but Camrose can be proud that the token system combined with the Community Bus provides good transit services at a cost the City can support and sustain. Tony Hladun, Camrose Reading skills

Kudos to Neil Haave in highlighting the importance of reading as a major contributor to academic success as outlined in second thought (Camrose Booster Jan. 30). His advice to undergraduate students and his insistence upon required reading is first rate. Of supplemental importance is the Reading University summer literacy program in Camrose designed to help young readers get the basics they need in order to succeed at school and beyond. Perhaps additional resources might be available to expand this excellent program. University instructors, parents, grandparents and teachers have a shared responsibility to ensure the acquisition of reading comprehension skills as vital to personal success. Unfortunately, current

use of technology has played a major impact in eroding development of these essential skills. Excessive participation in highly visual computer games, especially in young males, coupled with television viewing has supplanted reading as a major pastime. Social media also play a major role as younger generations receive information in 30-second sound bytes that has been “shared” by social media friends. This “shared information” is distilled, processed and stored in one’s psyche and has a tendency to result in group think and like mindedness. Social media “shares” of sound bytes have the propensity to create deeply rooted opinions and strongly held beliefs and stifle a better understanding of current issues that would ideally result by objectively reading in depth information sources either in print or online. Unfortunately, the instant and expedient gratification of “learning” from sound bytes using Twitter is also used effectively by current politicians to influence opinion and garner votes rather than objectively deal with the plethora of issues facing us in a non-partisan and collegial manner. It is incumbent upon us all (politicians notwithstanding) to encourage all young people to turn off/minimize the video, social media, Twitter tweets, Facebook, etc. and read, either for pleasure or for objective gathering of information. Lynn Clark, Camrose

***

That was then and this is now. Remembering that interview and my resolution, I now cannot remember when “looking with eyes of love” stopped being at the front of my mind. The habit drifted away. So here’s my experiment for the next week. (I’m not making a lifetime commitment!) I hereby resolve, in this public space, that for the next week, everyone I see–people I know and people I don’t know–before I say or do anything else, I’ll first look at them with eyes of love. Not romantic love, just that kind of “agape” love; acceptance of them as a fellow human being who, whatever else, is somebody’s child. And on days when I feel like pushing my limits–I’m going to see if I can do that with public figures, frequently on media, of whom I do not think highly. What would happen inside me if, instead of looking at them with contempt or disdain, I looked at them with eyes of love, with eyes that see them as a fellow human being who, whatever else, is somebody’s child? Can I do that for a week? I don’t know. But this Valentine’s Week seems like a good week to experiment. Would you like to join me in this experiment? Email me at Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com and we can compare notes about what we notice. ***

If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

Kodiaks tied for fourth place By Murray Green

The Camrose Kodiaks moved into a three-way tie for fourth place with wins over Drumheller and Olds. Camrose split a pair of games with Olds. The Kodiaks were tied 2-2 with the Grizzlys in the third period when Colson Gengenbach netted the equalizer, but a goal just over a minute later put Olds back on top for good. An empty net goal made it a 4-2 loss. Nic Correale netted the first Camrose marker in the middle frame. Goalie Luke Lush stopped 26 of 29 shots. Camrose had 34 shots on the net, but only four in the first frame. Kodiaks edged the Drumheller Dragons 3-2 in overtime on Feb. 3, a team they are chasing in the Alberta Junior Hockey League south standings. The Kodiaks scored first in the opening and

second periods, only to have the Dragons fight back. A scoreless third period forced overtime. Kyler Kupka didn’t waste any time in the extra frame by scoring in 42 seconds. Ryan Hartman scored both of the other tallies. Lush stopped 33 of 35 shots he faced. Camrose needed a shootout to come out on top in the Feb. 2 meeting with Olds. Both teams scored in each period in the close contest. Correale scored twice and Kupka forced the overtime with his late marker. Brock Bremer was the hero in the shootout. Lush turned away 29 of 32 shots directed his way. The Kodiaks have three home games left in the regular season. They host the Calgary Mustangs on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.;

On Jan. 26 and 27, libraries across Alberta and Canada encouraged people to read for 15 minutes in an effort to celebrate Family Literacy Day. Camrose Public Library joined the challenge with a goal to promote the importance of literacy and encourage families to read together. Cardston had the highest percentage of participants, winning a trophy for the title of Canada’s most ‘readerly’ community, with 1,412 participants of a population of 3,585, equating to 39 per cent of Cardston’s population reading to support literacy. Winners of the Hustle Yer Butts trophy for most improved readership was Carstairs with 13 per cent more readers than last year. Red Deer took home the “Readerpalooza” trophy, with the most readers overall totalling 15,803. Overall, 33 communities participated across Canada with 76,113 read-

Serving and protecting in days gone by By Lori Larsen

Nobel prizes are a bridge between science, society In December, the Augustana science department hosted a public Lunch and Learn event to discuss the Nobel science prize winners for 2017. The Nobel science prizes are very prestigious awards given to scientists recognized as making the most significant discoveries or advancements in the fields of chemistry, physics and physiology or medicine. These awards allow the scientific community the opportunity Sheryl Gares, to publicly celebrate the real world Biology, Augustana Campus, University impact of often seemingly esoof Alberta teric research. While the Nobel Committees have been accused of having a political agenda, and of overlooking deserving candidates, the ceremony and the prizes, which include a cash award, serve as an important bridge between science and society and highlight how scientific advancements can serve the public good. Within chemistry, the award was shared by Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson, for their scientific contributions toward developing a method called cryo-electron microscopy. Their research achievements improved microscope resolution, image processing and specimen preparation to the extent that we can now clearly see images of biological specimens at the atomic level including biological structures at the surfaces of cells. How does the ability to see the way biological molecules are arranged and interact at cell surfaces make a difference to the world? From a medical perspective, we can examine and compare highly infectious versus non-infectious bacteria or viruses and identify changes that correlate with greater disease-causing ability. The Nobel prize in physiology or medicine was shared by Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young for research on the genetic basis of the biological clock that controls circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms include the sets of responses or behaviors that occur in a regular daily pattern; for example, we typically wake around the same time every day, and we feel hungry at the same time every day. These rhythms require two components: an external sensory cue and a built in genetic mechanism that acts like a clock or a pacemaker. So what is the importance of understanding the genetic basis of circadian rhythms? They explain why we feel jet-lagged when we travel through several time zones in a short time period. The external cues and our internal clock become mismatched. Circadian rhythms also help regulate metabolism, so work or lifestyle that does not respect our natural rhythms is recognized as a contributor to metabolic disorders like diabetes, obesity and disease susceptibility. Disease specialists are beginning to recognize that certain treatments for patients are more effective at certain times of the day because patterns of certain hormones or immune factors are at higher or lower levels. Thus, working out the genetic mechanism of our internal clock now makes it possible to fine tune how we manage or treat illness to improve patient outcomes. Physicists Rainer Weiss, Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne were recognized for their contributions to the observation of gravitational waves. As predicted by Einstein’s theory of general relativity in 1915, gravitational waves can travel nearly unhindered over vast stretches of the universe. They are typically caused by the fast rotation of two heavy objects about one another, such as two back holes or two neutron stars, and are amplified if the two objects subsequently merge. The Nobel Prize winners predicted how such waves would modify space-time as they pass us, effectively varying the distances between objects on Earth. These signals would manifest themselves in a change of the time it requires for light to travel between two fixed mirrors. The Nobel laureates also designed an incredibly precise and sensitive experiment to measure this minuscule change in length, which amounted to the astonishing width of an atomic nucleus over a one-mile mirror distance! They not only proved Einstein wrong, who doubted that we would ever detect gravitational waves, they also delivered a new tool to look deeper into space, and hence further back in time than ever before. Together, these three groups of scientists demonstrate that even research that may not seem very practical or useful has important consequences for our understanding of our world and ourselves. The Nobel Committee’s recognition of their research conveys it to the rest of us and demonstrates the importance of science to our lives.

On a summer day in 1956, the first Camrose Police Service members sat in the York Café drawing straws to determine who would take the first shift. Tom Coultis drew the short straw which would begin his somewhat illustrious, somewhat adventurous, but always dedicated 14-year career as one of Camrose’s finest. Tom was born in 1930 in Trochu. The family eventually moved to Stettler where Tom continued to live life as a young boy. “In those days, kids 12 years and up were forced into uniforms at school as cadets,” recalled Tom. “That’s where is all started for me.” Tom admitted he was not the best student, but did find a bit of contentment in mechanics courses. “I worked for McTaggart Motors in Stettler and they suggested I should join the army.” Tom decided joining the army was the right thing for him, despite one small glitch: he was only 14 years old and the requirement was 16. “I was 16 according to my forms,” Tom said, with a grin and a wink. “I told them I was 16 and I looked like it, so I put my date (birth) down as 1928 instead of 1930.” Determined to serve his country and help his family earn a living, Tom forged his mother’s signature on the application. “She didn’t even know until I had to bring home some of my stuff. What else could I do, she was working trying to keep the household together.” (Tom’s father had passed away.) Everything would have gone smoothly had it not been for his younger brother trying the same ruse. “But they caught him in Petawawa,” said Tom. “He put his birthdate (year) the same year as mine except two months apart.” At the time, Tom was in Base Borden (Ont.) specializing in tanks. “They called us in to see the commanding officer and asked if we were twin brothers. What could we say. We looked at each other and thought what kind of lies could we tell.” Both boys were caught in their ultimate lie and Tom’s brother was discharged and sent back. “I got to stay because they said they had too much invested in me already.” Tom went on to serve as an instructor in tanks in Wainwright, Calgary and Borden (Ont.), retiring as a Sergeant Major after 22 years. Tom returned to Stettler and working for McTaggart when he heard about a position for a Camrose police officer.

Successful in his application he and his wife Violet (of 64 years, who recently passed away) moved to Camrose in 1956. “I worked the first shift (midnight) and I didn’t know a darn thing about it and we had nothing. No uniforms, no police car, no phones. I had my civies (civilian) clothes and my own car. “They gave me the keys to the office and said ‘Here you go, good luck.’ I told them I have no backup and my civies on, who will even believe I’m a police officer. They told me to hide and pretend I didn’t see anything,” laughed Tom.

to the extreme heat, and held Tom and Ron Stewart (another police officer) at gunpoint. “The suspect was looking for one of the other police officers. I disarmed him and the bloody gun went off at the same time I grabbed it.” Tom vividly remembers the clicking of the trigger as the suspect pointed the army rifle at him. “No one got injured or harmed and I was given a $10 cheque for bravery from the City,” said Tom. After retiring from the Police force in 1970, Tom opened Camrose News, Gift and Smoke Shop on Main

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Tom Coultis, one of Camrose’s first police officers, recalls the good old days of policing.

With no sidearm issued to them, Tom took it upon himself to borrow a .32 revolver from a friend. “I told him I won’t fire a shot unless I am fired at. I carried it in my pocket. That’s the way we started.” The first police car, a 1956 Dodge, was issued a month or so later. Tom still rides in that car, which has been refurbished, for the annual parade. The stories Tom recalls are endless, but one that stood out in his mind was the first female he arrested. “I was checking doors on foot at night and she came barrelling down the road in a car. I nearly got hit.” After the woman drove into a telephone pole, Tom arrested her for impaired driving. While in the jail cell, the woman decided to show her disapproval with Tom doing his duty by tossing the potty pail filled with urine at him. “I stepped in and looked and backed up and at the same time, she threw what was in the pot at me,” he said with a playful tone in his voice. But not all of Tom’s stories were amusing. He remembers, while on duty in the ’60s, a disgruntled suspect entered the back door of the police station, propped open due

Street. “I had the first 6/49 machine in Camrose.” After closing down the smoke shop, Tom and eventually Violet worked for Parkview Place (seniors’ home) finally retiring at 70 years old. “I was on call 24 hours a day, but only got paid for four,” he laughed. A devoted Legion member, Tom has been volunteering for 69 years including organizing Decoration Day ceremonies, arranging funerals for Vets, recording burials for Vets and helping set the stage for the Nov. 11 ceremonies. “I did it in town here for 65 years for sure, and I am still doing it. I had 12 years looking after the air cadets here, too.” Tom humbly said it is the least he can do to give back to the men and women who put their lives on the line for all of us. Even though he speaks with a keen sense of humour and a twinkle in his eye, about his career in policing, there is no doubt he took the job of protecting Camrose very seriously. Jesus Christ Superstar musical shines on stage By Murray Green

The Churchmice Players’ venture into a more serious and challenging production is a success with the hit, Jesus Christ Superstar. Local singers and actors made the transition into rock opera fairly smooth. The many hours of honing their skills in multiple roles has come to the forefront with many of the actors. It succeeds in being a little lighter about two deaths than the original. We all knew going in that veteran performer Brian Dumont would do a great job of portraying Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus Christ Superstar has Jesus playing a passive role, but Brian still fought for his people, trying not to be a star or king. He pushes himself to be strong on the cross to deliver his followers without them realizing it. The support cast of Ron Nease as Judas and Kelsey Earle as Mary Magdalene (and alternate Bhey Pastolero) rose to the occasion and delivered strong vocals and believable charac-

ters, who were both confused and questioning. The crowd around Jesus were worried about him and didn’t want him to get in trouble with the Romans. Judas strongly advises Christ to maintain a low profile. The crowd of characters, known as the chorus, provided strong background vocals as they wavered between supporting Christ and denying him. They were led by powerful performances by Carolyn Olson, Emma Hutchinson, Desiree de Kock and Marta Hutchinson. Everyone did a great job, however, we can’t list the entire cast. The music is crisp and moving. The musicians are really the stars of the show as they give us exciting music to a dark occasion. Jesus Christ Superstar follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. D i r e c t or Dave McDougall brings the cast together to move the production well as a unit. Not only are the vocals strong, but the choreography is so smooth you forget the

amount of time that must gone into getting it to that point. The musical started as a rock opera concept album before its Broadway debut in 1971. The story is loosely based on the Gospels’ accounts of the last week of Jesus’s life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the powerful crucifixion. It depicts political and interpersonal struggles between Judas and Jesus that are not present in the Bible. Eleven musicians are in the band who are tied closer to the action than a normal musical opera. It is demanding because what is happening on stage has to match the music. You still have time to catch a show featuring very talented local singers and actors. It runs Feb. 14 to 18 at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre in Camrose. All shows start at 7:30 p.m. except for Sunday which begins at 2 p.m.

Protect finances after data breach occurs Metro

As the summer of 2017 drew to a close, news broke of a data breach at the credit monitoring agency Equifax. Reports suggested the breach might have compromised the sensitive personal information of as many as 143 million Americans, or roughly half the adult population of the United States. In the digital age, consumers are more vulnerable to such breaches than ever

before. Data stolen as part of the Equifax breach included names, social security numbers and birthdates, among other personal information. Consumers concerned about data breaches can take certain steps to determine if they have been compromised, while also taking measures to safeguard themselves against future breaches. When breaches happen

inspired panic among consumers, and future data breaches will be no different. Hackers who gain access to consumers’ personal information can steal identities, file false tax returns, take out loans in unsuspecting consumers’ names, and commit a host of other crimes that can negatively affect consumers’ credit ratings and compro-

Dollar-cost averaging investment Stroud Agenices

The only certainty in securities markets is that they fluctuate. A rising market may create a euphoric mood; a falling market can lead to gloomy headlines that discourage investors. With dollar-cost averaging, you can take advantage of the very moves that freeze others with indecision. It’s an investment strategy that’s made for uncertain markets. Dollar-cost averaging works as well for beginners as it does for experienced investors. It is simple concept that’s summed up in a

few words: Invest the same amount of money at regular intervals, regardless of market moves. It tends to lower the average cost of your investments. It’s a disciplined strategy. Dollar-cost averaging imposes discipline because you keep investing the same dollar amount every month, no matter what happens in the market. It removes the temptation to stay out of the market when conditions are uncertain or volatile. In fact, dollar-cost averaging works best in volatile markets

It eliminates the temptation to try market timing. It’s important to remember that no strategy is perfect. Dollar-cost averaging will not guarantee you a profit or protect you against a loss if you must sell your investment when prices are down. It is important that this investment strategy is subject to the appropriate investment objectives and risk tolerance and may not be suitable for all people. Contact your investment advisor to discuss your investment decisions.

mise their ability to secure loans in the future. When a breach happens, consumers should do the following. Contact the agency that was affected. After acknowledging it had been breached, Equifax set up a website (https://trustedidpremier. com/eligibility/eligibility. html) where consumers could find out if their information had been compromised by the breach. When using such websites, consumers should make sure they are using secure connections, as they will be asked to enter personal information. Examine credit reports

Even if individuals’ personal information was not compromised, they can monitor their credit reports for suspicious activity. Many credit card companies now provide monthly credit report updates to cardholders. Individuals should monitor these to see if any new accounts have been opened without their knowledge. If ratings suddenly plummet despite relative inactivity from consumers, they should contact one of the major reporting agencies

for a thorough report. Such reports are typically free once per year. Future breaches

Breaches are seemingly inevitable in the digital age. Concerned consumers can take steps to protect themselves against future breaches. Continue monitoring credit reports. Individuals should take advantage of the monthly credit rating reports offered by their credit card companies even if no breaches have been reported. Hackers may sell consumers’ information, which thieves can then sit on for years before ultimately using to commit financial fraud. Routine monitoring can help consumers instantly address any suspicious activity before things spiral out of control. File taxes as early as possible. Criminals with access to consumers’ personal information can file false tax returns and steal their refunds before consumers even realize they have been victimized. File early, before thieves have had a chance to file false returns.

John “Wayne” Sampson June 20, 1946 ~ January 31, 2018 With the sun on his face and surrounded by those he loved, Wayne Sampson, of Camrose, AB, passed away after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Wayne was born in Halifax, NS on June 20, 1946 to Anthony (1986) and Monica (1998). He was the oldest of five children – Gail (Frank) of Bedford, NS, Terry (Geraldine) of Lower Sackville, NS, Lloyd (Glenda) of Dartmouth, NS and Kevin (Lisa) of Dartmouth, NS. It was in Halifax that Wayne met the love of his life, Linda Milbury, and they were married on January 24, 1969. Wayne and Linda lived in the Halifax area and raised two sons – Derek (Donna) of Edmonton, AB and Mark (Kerri) of Slave Lake, AB. In 1982, Wayne and Linda made a life-changing decision and moved their young family to Iqaluit (Frobisher Bay), NWT where Wayne worked for the Government of Northwest Territories as a Community Planning Technologist. Wayne embraced the North and all it had to offer, learning a new culture and way of life. In 1991, Wayne and Linda moved to Yellowknife, NWT, where he continued his career with the Government. In 1995, Wayne retired from the GNWT and he pursued his passion for woodworking. Waylin Woodworks was established. When Linda retired in August 2006, they moved house, home and woodshop to Camrose, AB to be closer to their sons and grandchildren Parker, Morgan and Aidan. Wayne was actively involved with seniors’ golf in Camrose, the Camrose Association for Community Living, the Canada 55+ Games and the Yellowknife Seniors’ Society. When his sons were young, Wayne was involved with Scouts Canada as well as coaching hockey and softball. “His infectious smile. His cheery voice. His hearty laugh.” Wayne will always be remembered for his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He will be greatly missed by his community. A celebration of Wayne’s life was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Burgar Funeral Home with Father Joseph Jacobson officiating. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of St. Mary’s Hospital and Palliative Care, especially Dr. Cathy Botha and Veny. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary’s Hospital Palliative Care and the Camrose Association for Community Living. Nordlys features award winners By Lori Larsen

If you haven’t already, mark Feb. 16 through 18 on your calendar for the Nordlys Film and Arts Festival 2018 at the Bailey Theatre. This year’s lineup offers a variety of films and entertainment. The Festival will kick off on Friday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m., with its traditional Black and White Reception. Attendees are invited to join the Nordlys spirit and come dressed in black and white in whatever form that suits your fancy, whether that be jeans and a tee or tuxes and gowns. Opening ceremonies will begin on Friday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. followed by the screening of 2015 Iceland film, Virgin Mountain at 7:15 p.m. with the filmmaker in attendance. At 10:15 p.m., the 2017 France film, Faces Places will be shown concluding the night’s films. The showing of films will begin again at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17 with the 2015 Denmark film A War followed by the Alberta Shorts, supper break, then the showing of the 2015 Iran film Taxi. At 8:30 p.m., Colleen Brown & Major Love take the stage for an entertaining concert. The evening films will conclude at 10:30 p.m. with the 2009 USA/Iceland film The Good Heart. Sunday’s events (Feb. 18) begin at 12:30 p.m. with the showing of the 1927 USA classic film, Sunrise, followed by the 2017 Canadian film, Birth of a Family with filmmakers in attendance. At 5 p.m., there will be a dinner break. Shows will begin again at 6:30 p.m. with the 2016 France /Germany film, Frantz. The 2016 USA film Chuck will round up the films at 9 p.m. followed by the closing ceremonies at 10:45 p.m. This year’s festival once again offers attendees the opportunity to speak with some of the filmmakers and get a rare glimpse at the tremendous time, effort and passion these films take to produce.

Dagur Kari, director of Virgin Mountain, will be travelling from Iceland to the Festival to share in the screening of the film and answer questions from attendees. The creators of Birth of a Family, one of the Alberta Shorts, will also be available to share with the audience the personal experiences of bringing together

Eyes on Camrose initiates Citizens on Patrol By Lori Larsen

Camrose Police Service Eyes on Camrose program has initiated the first new community based program, Citizens on Patrol (COP). “Citizens on Patrol involves community volunteers who assist the police in looking for suspicious activity in our city,” explained crime prevention/community relations Constable Kelly Bauer. “It’s all about being proactive in helping to prevent crimes from occurring in our community. Const. Bauer added that while the Camrose COP program will be organized and driven by citizens, Camrose Police Service is 100 per cent in support and cooperation of the program. He went on to explain that there are 60 active Citizens on Patrol groups in the Alberta Citizens on Patrol Association. “There is community interest because of the amount of property crime occurring in all areas of the province,” he added. “Currently there are 13 new groups forming and Camrose is one of them.” After hearing a presentation given by the Alberta COP president, approximately 10 months ago, on exactly what COP is all about and what they offer a community, Const. Bauer became interested in forming the program in Camrose. “The biggest hurdle was finding the right person in our community who is willing to organize a local COP.” As luck would have it, Const. Bauer noticed a post on Facebook by local resident Dan Macpherson, expressing Macpherson’s desire to create a COP society within Camrose. “I met with Dan and when I indicated to him that the Camrose Police Service would fully support a COP group, he was excited to get it going.” Bauer eagerly added that Macpherson was the ideal person to spearhead the program. “He has prior experience with the COP program, so is fully aware of what all is involved in having a successful program.” Macpherson, an active member of the Camrose Community, has past experience as a member of the

ON PATROL

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose Police Service crime prevention/community relations Constable Kelly Bauer and Camrose COP organizer Dan Macpherson shake hands in a show of cooperation and support for the COP program.

Edson COP between the years 2003 and 2005. “With the recent rash of crime in my area (in Camrose), I decided to post on Facebook that we may need a Citizens on Patrol in Camrose. “The police can’t be everywhere at one time and any information they can get from the citizens about incidents could potentially help prevent or solve crime.” Macpherson said the response from the community on the Facebook page was very positive, as was an email to Macpherson from Camrose Police Chief Mark Neufeld, indicating Camrose Police support of the program. A General Information Meeting about forming a Camrose COP Society will be held on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Camrose Regional Exhibition, and Macpherson encourages anyone interested in the program or volunteering for the program, to attend. The process

The Camrose COP will first have to become a society under the Alber-

ta Societies Act and create an executive board, bylaws and a constitution. Once the Society is formed volunteers will go through an application process. Anyone wishing to become involved with COP must be 18 years of age or older, concerned about the community, able to pass a security check and of good character. Qualified participants will be required to fill out an application form, complete a criminal record check and interview and, once accepted, commit to a minimum of five hours per month and receive training. Macpherson added. “We want anyone volunteering to be part of the COP to know they will not be receiving a baton or stun gun and they are not an active member of the Camrose Police Service. They will be citizens acting as an extra set of ears and eyes to convey information to the Camrose Police Service.” The objective of COP program is to watch out for suspicious activity in

the community, record this activity, and where appropriate report the activity to the police. Macpherson said the goal will be to have an active COP group in Camrose at some point this summer. Anyone interested in

volunteering or finding out more information about the COP (Camrose) program are encouraged to attend the Feb. 15 meeting, visit the website at www.acopa.ca or contact via email at CamroseCOPS@gmail.com.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Viking RCMP arrest property crime suspects By Murray Green

Viking RCMP were alerted to a theft of an ATV in progress on Feb. 2 at 4 p.m. A citizen in the rural Viking area observed a suspicious vehicle in his neighbour’s yard and saw the vehicle leaving, as well as another male driving an ATV from the property. The citizen was able to direct RCMP to the location the males were spotted and police were able to arrest both suspect males. The suspect on the ATV attempted to flee briefly, but was stuck in snow. The RCMP charged a Killam and a Sedgewick man with one count of Theft over $5,000. One of the men will appear in Vegreville Provincial Court on March 5. The RCMP appreciate the local citizens that assisted in locating the two involved suspects. The assistance of the public goes a long way towards crime prevention efforts in our communities across Alberta.

2018 Kiwanis Top Cop Award The Top Cop Award is a community service project sponsored and coordinated by the Camrose and District Kiwanis Club, along with the cooperation of the Camrose Police Service (CPS). This award is presented annually in recognition of an individual officer’s commitment towards going above and beyond his/her duties as a member of the CPS. Typically, a worthy nominee would set high standards for volunteering at community events, working with sports-related and other Camrose organizations, and devoting personal time towards a variety of causes within our city. The general public, any of our local clubs and organizations, as well as the CPS are invited to submit nominations for members of our Police Service. Nominations are received and judged by the members of the Camrose and District Kiwanis Club. The club relies upon the Chief of Police to confirm the accuracy of nomination criteria. The final decision on each year’s Top Cop Award is made solely by the members of the Kiwanis Club, but we greatly value input from the community. The Camrose and District Kiwanis Club applauds the efforts of our Police Service in both their professional and their volunteer service to our community.

TO NOMINATE A TOP COP: Pick up an application form at Burgar Funeral Home at 4817-51 Avenue OR from any Camrose Kiwanis member by emailing kiwaniscamrose@gmail.com Deadline for nominations is March 1, 2018.
