Downtown Camrose looking for new leadership By Murray Green
Downtown Camrose elected a new board during the annual general meeting on Jan. 24. However, a new chair will not be determined until the next meeting. Both, chair Michael Wetsch (retired after nine years of service) and vice-
chair Debbie Thompson (resigned), and are not returning which left a vacuum in the executive. Only treasurer Curtis LeDain agreed to remain on the executive. Three new board members were elected, Jennifer Routhier, Glenda Beaver and Vonnie Strilchuk. The

remaining board members are Jen Lindstrand, LeDain, Cheryl Day, Randy McCrea and Lauren Cleveland. A new chair and vicechair will be selected from within the board. Downtown Camrose manager Allan Walkey, who is also leaving, shared the highlights of 2017. “We tried to maintain the engagement level from the stakeholders that we have developed over the last couple of years. We had interesting wins and some disappointments throughout the year,” said Walkey. “Our Farmers’ Market manager left to complete her masters in Calgary and Ken Rohr took over and has plenty of experience.” This year, the downtown market will operate from June 7 to Sept. 27. The market hours are from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Last year, 59 venders sold items at the market. Downtown Camrose will be reporting to the City of Camrose council to ask for their financial allotment earlier, so programs can be operated with money available. Business taxes are paid to the City, not Downtown Camrose, which leaves Downtown Camrose going to the City for funding.
The City of Camrose issues the BRZ tax and collects it on behalf of Downtown Camrose. “Under the current system, we don’t get paid until the funds have been paid by businesses to the City and are then provided to us,” explained Wetsch. “The issue that has come up is if the amounts aren’t being paid, who does the work to collect those amounts? Downtown Camrose has limited authority to collect the amounts, but ultimately is the one out the cash if not collected. The proposal would see the City pay us our budgeted tax levy up front, and the City would be responsible for collecting any unpaid amounts as they have the authority to do so.” Economic development is changing. “I just came from a meeting where we talked about how the economy is going to change over the next decade. We know that there is a lot of change on the horizon. Passionate and committed people need to be participating in these organizations for them to be relevant and viable,” said City of Camrose community development and innovation director Victor Goodman. “The City is in the process, as we speak, of under-
taking a downtown area redevelopment plan. We have a retail and commercial gap analysis report that is almost ready to be released. There are other studies going on that will help us understand what the downtown core looks like. A lot of people think it is Main Street only, but it is not. It includes a large number of businesses that are not retail and not terribly well represented in this room. We need to take a look at how everyone works together. I want to work with a viable and effective organization to move this forward. Our data tells us what retail happens downtown is a lot different than what happens on the west end. But, they can’t live in isolation of each other. They are very much codependent. We need to maintain the character of downtown, while working with the Camrose Chamber of Commerce and other organizations that work outside of the core, to make sure they know what we are doing downtown. We all need to work together for a common vision.” Goodman feels this is a tremendous opportunity for Downtown Camrose to continue and take it to the next level, which will be the next board and manager’s job to do.

Building prevention on solid ground By Lori Larsen
In an effort to assist people in preventing domestic violence and building healthy relationships, the Family Violence Action Society (FVAS), under the umbrella of Camrose and District Support Services, offers a variety of individual and group services to children, adults and seniors. Two of those services include the 14-week education-counselling groups, consisting of Changing Ways for Men and Choices for Women whose domestic relationships have involved any form of abusive behaviour. “FVAS has been providing group programming for the community since 1996 to assist people who have experience with family violence,” noted FVAS program director Sheralyn Dobos. “Changing Ways and Choices have been flagship programs for those years and other programs have been added over time.” Just under two years ago, one of the new programs introduced was Solid Ground, an extension of the Changing Ways program for men who wish to move even further in the process of change. The two-hour weekly group session is aimed at providing tools and understanding to support change in behaviours and assist attendees in recognizing the characteristics of healthy and unhealthy relationships, forms of abuse and cycle of violence. Initially, FVAS hired Kristy Reducka (who drives from Edmonton) and Bill Harder to facilitate the Changing Ways programs. “Bill and Kristy were hired to do the Changing Ways group through FVAS funding that supports these programs. However, they quit the paying job because they were passionate about developing longer-term support for these men,” said Dobos. “They have both volunteered for
and share and be honest about where they are at and what they want to do. There is a good piece about setting and working on goals and supporting one another.” Reducka said the group members share good times and rough times and work on problem solving and building on the skills and tools the men were given in the Changing Ways group. Harder explained the key ingredients in the Solid Ground program include safety, non-judgement, accountability, respect and care in deeply listening. “It creates community for these men in a place where they can feel safe and connect by bearing witness to each other’s stories.” Reducka added, “A part of what we do is ask questions and get the men thinking about what triggers them or puts them in less ideal situations, leading them down a path they don’t really want to go down.” Harder said that virtually all the men they work with have childhood stories that are very hard in a broad spectrum. “They were mentored in a lot of hurt that was perpetuated in their lives. These men who come to these mainte-
nance groups want to stop the cycle. They are aware they were hurt and that they were hurters and they don’t want to continue that. “They have come to realize that they don’t have to be defined by who they were and what they have done.” The majority of the men who have been attending the Solid Ground group were, for the most part, court mandated to take the Changing Ways program and chose to continue their growth. “If they wish to continue with Solid Ground, they do so voluntarily,” commented Harder. “They can just drop in, there is no commitment required or reporting back to an agency.” The first Solid Ground group had four men return from the Changing Ways group that Reducka and Harder facilitated, joined by three other men from earlier Changing Ways groups. “Then, we had three other men drop in periodically from a later class after us. Of these about 10 men, we have four that have come regularly,” said Bill, noting that these four men have experienced significant growth in selfawareness and how they
desire to relate to their family and their partner. Reducka agreed, “They are good at helping each other along and holding each other accountable. We cover hard topics, but the main men attending are really open and willing to engage in some of the hard conversation, such as the effects and shame of their actions.” Reducka and Harder encourage the group to sculpt the direction of the meetings, which do not follow any set curriculum or agenda. The Solid Ground group runs throughout the year on the second and fourth Mondays each month from 7:30 until 9 p.m., at the Camrose Primary Care Network, West End Clinic. Graduates from any Changing Ways program or other similar programs are welcome to join the group. Reducka was once asked why she would want to work with offenders versus survivors and she replied, “If you want to improve the world and you want to improve people’s lives, you need to be working with the perpetrators as well. Part of prevention is working on the causes and what contributes to it.” In describing why they volunteer their time, Harder spoke with sincerity. “The payoff is, if one man manages to grow in selfawareness and enter into a relationship healthily, that has mammoth dividends for the men, their partners, their children, friends, extended family, for all of society.” For more information or to register for the Solid Ground Program or any programs offered by the Family Violence Action Society, contact program director Sheralyn Dobos by email at cdss5@telusplanet.net or by telephone at 780-672-0141.

close to two years for the Solid Ground Program because they share a deepseated belief that ongoing support is helping people sustain positive change.” Reducka and Harder offered insight into the need for, and benefits of, a program such as Solid Ground. “In Changing Ways, we talk about the cycle of violence and in the maintenance group (Solid Ground), we reinforce looking at the cycle and what may be triggering the violence – the root causes,” explained Reducka. Conversations with the men attending the Changing Ways program indicated a strong desire for more support. “They said that 14 weeks was not long enough,” said Reducka. Harder added, “We couldn’t find a follow-up support group for perpetrators of intimate partner violence anywhere in Alberta. But it seemed patently absurd to begin a process for 14 weeks, that took years to become enmeshed in, then just set these men loose without any further work.” In describing the Solid Ground program, Reducka said, “It is a safe space where men can talk openly
Elite midgets play here By Murray Green
The Northern Alberta Extreme Elite 15 midget team (NAX E15), with five former Camrose Red Wings bantam players, are returning to Camrose to play an exhibition game against Prince George on Feb. 24 at 6:45 p.m. in the Max McLean Arena. It was highlighted with eight players being selected in he Western Hockey
League draft. Five of the Red Wing players stayed together and are currently playing with the NAX E15. The team participates in the Canadian Sports School Hockey League that play league games across western Canada. The majority of the players on the team were either drafted or are listed by WHL Teams. Small business packs a punch By Lori Larsen The Camrose business community is comprised of an intricate web of larger national and multi-national businesses and a host of smaller, often family-run, businesses. Small businesses can be considered the heart and soul of a community and, according to the 2014 Small Business Profile, account for 95 per cent of all businesses in the province, equating to 158,049 small businesses compared to 7,558 medium- to largesized businesses. Filling a variety of roles and niches within the community, small businesses continue to be strong leaders across Alberta’s economy. The 2014 Small Business Profile noted, “In 2013, Alberta’s small businesses (from one to 49 employees) were leaders among Canadian provinces, generating a GDP per capita that far exceeded the national average and small businesses in Alberta are responsible for 35 per cent of all private sector employment in the province.” A further breakdown of the percentage indicated that nearly two-thirds of small businesses classified as “micro-business-
es” (between one and four employees), 63 per cent had one to four employees, 29 per cent had five to 19 employees and only eight per cent had 20 to 49 employees. Alberta is also home to many self-employed individuals who are also vital to the economy of the province. “Recently, we have seen a rise in women and younger entrepreneurs,” said Rural Alberta Business Centre business advisor Louise Jones, who also commented that Camrose, in comparison to other municipalities such as Lloydminster, has a very strong small business representation. Aside from being a major contributor to the economic growth of the province and providing numerous employment opportunities, small businesses are also counted on by larger multinational industry to provide them with local goods and services. The report also made reference to the fact that, “Between 2012 and 2013, over 10,000 small businesses were added to Alberta’s business landscape,” an increase of nearly 19 per cent. The report referred to
Statistics Canada (Canadian Business Patterns) to a breakdown of percentages into proportion of small businesses in Alberta by Sector (2013). Accounting for 19 per cent was professional, scientific and technical services; 16 per cent retail and wholesale trades; 16 per cent construction; 12 per cent other services; nine per cent finance, insurance and real estate; seven per cent administration, management, support and waste services; seven per cent arts, entertainment, accommodation, food and recreation; six per cent transportation and warehousing; four per cent oil and gas; three per cent manufacturing; and one per cent information. The 2014 report showed that in 2013, Alberta’s wholesale trade was valued at over $78.6 billion, and retail sales were valued at more than $73.1 billion. The next time you are considering a purchase, bear in mind the people behind the businesses in Camrose and area and that the provincial numbers speak for themselves–small businesses are thriving in our communities.

Hosting the Alberta 55 plus games By Lori Larsen
City of Camrose council approved a grant request to fund the 2018 Alberta 55 Plus Spring Provincial Games, specifically to sponsor the banquet up to the grant request of $9,500, to be taken from the community events account. The Games are scheduled for May 18 to 20 in Camrose and, according to a report presented by Rose Snopek, Alberta 55 Plus, Zone 4 activity and publicity director and chair of the Host Organizing Committee, they will host approximately 320 participants (including Zone 4 board members and activity judges) in Camrose. In a letter presented to Mayor Mayer and council, Snopek noted, “These games will encourage physical, social and cre-
ative achievement through participation and friendly competition. In addition to the participants, many family and friends will also be here to support all the participants during these Alberta 55 Plus Provincial Games.” Pickleball request
Council also approved a request by the Camrose Pickleball Club for the allocation of grant funding of $940 to offset the costs of hosting the May 5 Camrose Open Pickleball Tournament to be taken from the community events account. In support of the request councillor Kevin Hycha said, “This is one of those requests that I think is a win/win for us and for them (Pickleball Club). What they do with the money that they are generating
is put it back into their sport for nets and markings and improvements to what we (City) offer.” Hycha added he believed the Pickleball Club offered the equipment used in the Field House, to others. “If they (Pickleball Club) are not using that court and there are others who want to play pickleball, they are allowed to use the nets and the poles.” City of Camrose community services general manager Ryan Poole added, “School groups involved in that also have borrowed the equipment from them (Pickleball Club).” Councillor Hycha continued, “The money that we are giving them actually goes back to the City so we don’t have to purchase those items.”
A family tradition Brent first started working on those classic cars of the 1970s at Superior Lincoln Mercury in Camrose. That’s going back a while. Kyle joined his dad in the trade when Brent bought Denz Auto Repair in ’07. Kyle got his ticket in 2011. They’ve worked together since then, growing a business that’s built on the strength of tradition.

The reason for the company’s continued success? As Garry always says, “We don’t just build homes, we build relationships.” When you think of running a company in those terms, the foundation of success is clearly superior customer service and satisfaction. Garry’s sons, Garret and Lucas, couldn’t agree more.

The floorplan, the neighborhood, all the personalized touches making their home unique, we’re here to guide them from start to finish, just like family. Of course, it doesn’t end there. Our door is always open.
We never become complacent with our product. We’re constantly rethinking, re-imagining, striving for any possible improvement we can make. Attending trade conferences and continuing education is key, but above all, listening to our clients’ needs and finding the right solutions for them, that’s what keeps us on a progressive path.
One of the greatest accomplishments we’ve ever achieved, above all the awards and accolades bestowed upon us from our peers in the industry, is building a home for a third generation Zetsen Home owner. One could never dream of a more meaningful compliment as a homebuilder.

The hot tub business has had more than its fair share of less than honorable companies. However, that is not how husband-and-wife team Russ and Doneal Greipl of R & D Hot Tubs do business! They have survived and thrived with multi-generational clients for about three decades. In fact, over 60 percent of their business comes from the referrals of satisfied customers! This Camrose-based business is the proud recipient of virtually every achievement HydroPool Hot Tubs – Swim Spas offers their worldwide dealer network: sales, growth, marketing, general excellence and customer service. The most prized awards, though, are clearly those connected to customer service. The Greipl’s goal is to treat EVERY customer like they are family and at the base of their core values, family comes first.
Andy Zetsen Sr. may never have imagined that nearly 42 years after launching the company with his son, Garry, a third generation would carry the family business well into the next millennia.

FAMILY AFFAIR Sixteen years ago, Bernell Odegard bought The Lefse House business from Helen Lien. His Scandinavian heritage helped redesign the product – made, served and sold in this quaint and very popular Camrose business. Strong Norwegian coffee, original Scandinavian baking, snacks and lunch (including the always-amazing Swedish meatballs and gravy or pault with lingonberries) are crowd pleasers. Daughter Jane Beck joined in growing the business which now wholesales and distributes baked items to select Co-ops, Sobeys and delis around the the province.
She takes special pride in their gift shop which features unique Scandinavian gifts (many which highlight the culture’s legendary humor). After decades of teaching, Bernell and Jane enticed wife/mom Linda to join them at The Lefse House. This addition of time and talent allowed further expansion. Now included are take-out meals, fresh bread (made daily from only natural, wholesome ingredients), an enhanced line of Scandinavian baking (not the least of which is butterhorns made each morning and the City’s best cinnamon buns – Friday only!).

Day home proposal update By Lori Larsen
During the Feb. 5 regular council meeting, followup information was provided to council by administration on the proposal by Camrose Police Service Constable Pam McTavish on the licensing and subsequent regulation of day homes in Camrose, as per an earlier presentation made to council on Jan. 15. City of Camrose planning and development director Aaron Leckie presented further information on the regulating/licensing day homes. “Some of the questions (from Council) that came out of the previous report were related to the cost of complying with these regulations,” said Leckie. “We did contact the provincial agency responsible for the Child Intervention Record Check (Children’s Services Alberta). As previously quoted, it would cost $50 and could not be completed by the person requesting it (day home provider). they had to have someone request the check on them. As it turns out, a day home provider can actually check themselves and there is no cost associated with the checks.” The other regulated requirements specified in McTavish’s report included having a valid first aid, a police information check for all residents in the home 18 years of age and older, proof of insurance and home business license for all non-government approved day homes. A business license is not required for a government approved family day home. “All of that combined totals $341.66 annually,” noted Leckie. With regards to proof of insurance and questions raised on whether or not insurance companies in Alberta can provide insurance to day homes, Leckie
indicated inquiries with a few insurance companies throughout Alberta confirmed that insurance for day homes is available at an estimated average cost of $100 annually, based on four non-dependent children in care. Most insurance companies do not offer private day home insurance for more than four non-dependent children. The insurance provides an average of $1 million liability though higher policies do exist. Other costs include $50 for the police information check and $150 for the annual home business license. Leckie went on to explain that in accordance to the provincial Child Care Licensing Act, a “child care program” means a program with the primary purpose of providing child care to seven or more children and that less than seven children would qualify as a day home. As well, under the Child Care Licensing Act the Investigation of unlicensed child care program, Section 22 (1)states that, “If the director has reasonable and probable grounds to believe that a person is offering or providing a child care program without a licence, the director may, with the permission of the person in charge of the premises in which the child care program is being offered or provided (a) at any reasonable hour, enter the premises for the purposes of conducting an investigation with respect to the child care program, and (b) examine any records or other documents relevant to the investigation.” For more information on the Child Care Licensing Act, visit www. qp.alberta.ca. Legendary Tom Petty honoured By Murray Green
Camrose band Men Who Fell to Earth will be honouring Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers by holding a tribute Learning to Fly concert at the Bailey Theatre on Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. Petty, who died last fall at the age of 66, greatly added to the foundation of rock and roll music. Both as a solo artist and with his band The Heartbreakers, Petty specialized in a loose-limbed style of rock that grooved and flowed like no other American rock band. Men Who Fell to Earth will be bringing many of Petty’s songs back to the
forefront. Petty’s formidable song catalog included the biting “Refugee” and the dreamy “Free Fallin’,” the sardonic “Into the Great Wide Open” and the gently menacing “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” the determined “Runnin’ Down A Dream” and the chiming “The Waitin”. Men Who Fell to Earth is made up of three professors from the University of Alberta Augustana Campus. Lars Hallstrom is on bass guitar, Jeremy Sylvestre on drums and vocals, and Alex Carpenter on guitar and lead vocals. The band formed in ad hoc fashion shortly
after the death of David Bowie in early 2016 to perform a live musical tribute at the Bailey Theatre. Since then, Men Who Fell to Earth has played at a variety of venues, from Augustana Campus events to frequent Bailey Theatre shows, from local bars to Edmonton clubs, and recently on the stage of the Cargill Theatre in the Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. Concert offers a view into Williams’ future By Murray Green
Hiram “Hank” Williams hit rock bottom six months before. Back in 1952, he was a 29-year-old trying to make a comeback in country music. Hank Williams Live–1952 offers a chance to imagine how it might have been to listen to him sing and tell stories. The concert is performed by actor Joe Matheson who masterfully embodies one of the most important country music artists of all time. He shares the concert Williams never gave at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Feb. 23 at 8 p.m. Joe is a veteran of the stage, having performed in the Canadian premieres of Tommy, Miss Saigon and a two-year run of the hit musical Jersey Boys in Toronto. When contacted, Joe was in the middle of production on the Buddy Holly Story in Regina. “One of the ways my show is different from a lot of others is that I come on the stage as Hank. I’m acting as Hank would have during his concert right from the beginning to end. I never talk as myself. That way, it is a bit more theatrical than tribute shows,” shared Joe. “I’m proud of how authentic the music is. I was told I could do the show cheaper by using less musicians. I’ve got a great band and people can close their eyes and listen to it like an old radio broadcast in 1952. I’m living the moment.”
When several of his band members were conscripted into military service during the Second World War, Williams had trouble with their replacements, and WSFA terminated his contract because of his alcohol abuse. Williams eventually married Audrey Sheppard, who was his manager for nearly a decade. After recording “Never Again” and “Honky Tonkin’” with Sterling Records, he signed a contract with MGM Records. In 1947, he released “Move It On Over,” which became a hit and he also joined the Louisiana Hayride radio program. “It is a funny show and I try to see more of the positive side of Hank. My goal is to show what his life was like when he was at the top of his game,” shared Joe. In 1952, he divorced Sheppard and was dismissed by the Grand Ole Opry because of his unreliability and alcohol abuse. On Jan. 1, 1953, he suffered heart failure while traveling to perform at a concert in West Virginia, and died as a result. His death came in the wake of many years of back pain, alcoholism and prescription drug abuse which led to his health deterioration and eventual death. Despite his short life, Williams is one of the most celebrated and influential musicians of the 20th century, especially in regard to country music. Continued on page 17

Williams in 1952 show Continued from page 16
“I grew up in Saskatchewan liking country music, not necessary Hank Williams. I was asked to act in the Hank William Story, The Show He Never Gave and did several plays, but I commented on how negative it was. From my research, he was a good entertainer and everyone wanted to be around him. I was told if I don’t like the show, then write my own, so I did.” It seemed like the beginning of the end for Hank Williams. His marriage had ended, his contract with the Grand Ole Opry had been terminated, and his health was in serious decline. His drinking got worse, the stream of concerts he was used to, dried up, and even his old friend and mentor Fred Rose said he couldn’t put up with Hank’s shenanigans any longer. Suddenly, in September of ’52, the tide appeared to turn. Hank was riding high again, back in the studio and planning a tour. “Months before his death, he had a second wind. He was recording another album and things were turning around. My version of Hank is when he is on top of the world again. I did a lot of research and he was a good stand-up comedian.” Williams was born with spina bifida occulta, a birth defect, centered on the spinal column, which gave him lifelong pain – a factor in his later abuse of alcohol and drugs. “I talked to steel guitar player Don Helms in Nashville, who was the last surviving member of his band and asked him was Hank really like. He gave me some real insights. He had his problems and fired Don about once a month. Don was his best friend who was around him the most. He couldn’t say a bad thing about him.” His performances were acclaimed when he was sober, but despite the efforts of his work associates to get him to shows sober, his abuse of alcohol resulted in occasions when he did not appear, or his performances were poor. “I started the show in 2007 for five years. We put it on the shelf and the band did their own thing. Two years ago, someone called me up to help at a fundraiser, so I got the band back together and we had a good time. Then the phone starting ringing for the show again.” Joe said the best country music fans are in Alberta. “We were doing a regular show at a casino (Edmonton) and all of a sudden people began to move the tables and chairs and set up a space to dance. It was great. Albertans like to make their own party.”

Leckie also said, in his opinion, “Other agencies support these regulations because they can only limit the number of children in a private day home and not the standards of care. When it comes to quality of care concerns regarding private day homes, Children’s Services Alberta will refer the matter to policy and/or Child Intervention.”
Council comments
Councillor Wayne Throndson said, “I think this is an excellent idea. I think it protects people who need protection and can’t speak up for themselves. And I am glad to see that the costs are, in my opinion, fairly reasonable. I support moving forward with the recommendation.” Councillor PJ Stasko agreed with councillor
Throndson and indicated he did not feel it would cause any financial burdens and sends a positive message “that we are ahead of this.” Councillor Agnes Hoveland also spoke in favour of the proposal and inquired as to any negative feedback. Const. McTavish indicated the only concerns she
heard were whether day homes actually classify as a business and the costs. She also stated that approved family day homes are considered self-employment and therefore are eligible for the same tax benefits as self-employment. The matter will return to council in March.

Home Program offers free education, funds
By Murray Green
The Canadian Home Program offers free education about how to buy a house and then it gives you money on top of it. The successful program is in its eighth year of helping local people in Camrose learn about all of the aspects of purchasing a home. Realtors Marilou Yampolsky and Glenda Strauss, of Coldwell Banker Battle River Realty, are organizing the program that has already helped many residents. “I strongly encourage anyone who is considering buying a home to attend the home program. It is an investment of one day which will provide you with a wealth of knowledge,” said Kim Vassberg, who took advantage of the program. “I heard about the program from a friend who had taken it and she used it when she bought her first home. She said it was invaluable and recommended I attend. I’ve lived in the Camrose area 21 years, but hadn’t been in the situation to purchase my own home yet.” Each year, about 35 people take the five-hour workshop. “In the home program, you are given a course manual that’s yours to keep and you’ll hear a variety of professionals give informative presentations. A lawyer will discuss their role in the purchase of a home, from the real property report, possession, money transfer and titles,” she added. The workshop will be held at the Camrose Public Library on March 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “A home inspector explains all the factors involved in a home inspection like major defects, things that are safety hazards. He walks you through the process and tells you what to look for. An inspector looks at the roof, attic, foundation, structure, electrical, plumbing and the interior,” explained Kim. “Realtors will take you through the step-by-step process of preparing for home ownership, and how to select a home that fits your needs and wants.” People don’t have to buy
right away. The funds are held for them until they are ready to buy. “A mortgage specialist will explain types of mortgages, building credit ratings, debt ratio and how to estimate costs involved in purchasing a home,” Kim said. “I feel the one-day investment of time to take the Home Program will be the best investment in yourself and your family ever. The bonus part is the $1,000 you are given towards the purchase of your new home.” The Canadian Home Program helps buyers by providing them with all the information they need to make the right decision with buying a home. “I had been renting, and dealt with unpredictable rent increases, which was frustrating. I was hoping to get out of my rental situation. I took the home program in April 2017 and in September, I purchased my first home with the help of Marilou, who coteaches the home program,” shared Kim. “It was an informative program and I feel like it answered a lot of questions for myself and others. The mortgage I pay monthly now is comparable to what I was paying for rent before. And now I can do anything I want to my place, like paint, renovate, whatever I want. There’s a sense of pride knowing you own your own home. I love my home and am so happy I spent time looking to find just the right house. I recommend to home shoppers to keep in mind what you need and keep an open mind. I look into my yard and have so many plans for what I can do this spring.” The workshop is free and the education is priceless. “The home program helped me to be equipped for my journey to home ownership. If you attend, you won’t regret it.” To register for the workshop, go to www.cdnhp.ca/ classes and to register for the Camrose session contact Glenda Strauss at 780-7818080 or Marilou Yampolsky at 780-679-8975.

St. Mary’s Hospital receives new parallel bars from Camrose Legion Poppy Fund money By Murray Green
The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion raises money for the community by selling poppies prior to Remembrance Day every year. The donations to the Legion go directly back into the community to assist local groups. Last year, Poppy Fund chair Kerry Grettum presented Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose with more than $14,849, so the hospital could purchase a motorized height and width parallel bars for the rehabilitation department. The bars were ordered and set up for use this year. It has a 1,000 lb. weight capacity and the parallel bars are designed for comfort, stability and optimum safety. The sturdy construction includes a 10-gage steel base, anodized aluminum handrails and chromium-plated supports. The non-skid black mat promotes proper gait and helps prevent slips, while the convenient fingertip controls offer individual or

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose rehab therapist assistants Jessica Petryshen, left, and Kris Baumgardner welcomed $14,849 from Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund chairman Kerry Grettum to pay for new motorized parallel bars that can adjust both height and width to accommodate all patients.
simultaneous operation. This is excellent for professional use and included a manufacturer‘s 10 year limited warranty.
Parallel bars allow clients to have a stable and strong base of support and are typically used by clients with
orthopedic, neurological, or strength challenges that severely limit their ability to stand or walk safely.
The old bars had a weight limit and were manually adjusted, turning the use into a twostaff job. Now one staff member can adjust and supervise a person using the bars. The hospital is the only out patient rehab site in Camrose with parallel bars, so it is an essential piece of equipment for many post-surgical and stroke survivors, who struggle to get their functional independence back. The Legion also donated to the Kipness Centre of Veterans Comfort, STARS Air Ambulance, the local Air Cadets, Army Cadets and bursaries for local university students totalling about $25,000.

Crazy about driving a Mercury 1963 truck By Murray Green
Some people just have the “Mercury (Boogie) Blues.” Songwriters K. C. Douglas and Robert Geddins had it right back in 1948. There is something ‘bout a Mercury. The song was later made famous by the Steve Miller Band and David Lindley. Acie Goselin of Camrose knows that same feeling. He owns a 1963 Mercury M-Series truck. “The truck is originally from Camrose and I saved it from going on a scrap metal pile. A friend came across it while he was looking for another project. He’s a Chevy guy and I’m a Ford guy, so when he ran into this, he said I have to check this out. The farmer told me if I had waited one more day, it would have been in a scrap metal pile,” said Acie. “It was a complete truck with a windshield and everything.” The Mercury M-Series was sold primarily in Canada, as a rebadged version of the Ford F-Series. “I had to find a new engine because the original was seized. It was from the same year, a politically-correct engine. It’s a 292 V8 and the only Ford engine made with the distributor in the back. It has a cross-over pipe in front for the exhaust.” To differentiate Ford and Mercury trucks, Mercury added a brand-specific grille and slightly different exterior and interior trim. “I wanted the V8 model with four on the floor, I didn’t want the three on the tree. To me, this was an easy project. Four buddies and I fixed this truck up in a weekend. We ripped it apart, made a few changes and painted it.

MERCURY BLUES
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Acie Goselin loves driving his Mercury up and down the Camrose streets. He found the V8 four-speed truck in a field and restored it to suit his tastes and lifestyle.
I found this emblem from a grain truck. The one on this truck would have been smaller.” For 1961 to 1966, Mercury trucks had a gear/lightning bolt symbol on their horn button and no other interior Mercury nameplates. “I wanted a Mercury because it was Canadian made. I’m having trouble finding a tailgate because it is a Mercury and not a Ford, because down in the States they have Fords all over the place. I’m trying to be proudly Canadian,” Acie said with a
laugh. “I wanted to keep it nostalgic.” Because smaller Canadian towns had either a FordMonarch or Lincoln-MercuryMeteor dealer, but not both, the L-M-M network got the Mercury truck. “Some of the parts I couldn’t find, so I had to go after market. I tried to keep it as original as I could. The colour is original. I had trouble finding the chrome, so I went more with a Euro look. As you can see, it turned out pretty well. It is a little bit of old school and a little bit of new school,” he added.

“I made it my own, that is the biggest thing. I added my own style of rims and tires that I liked which better reflect my style. The other thing is that it is a step side and not a fleet side. The fleet side looks like any other truck out there. The step side makes it look shorter, although its not a short box, it is a long box.” The need for a dual marketing network was eliminated with the Automotive Trade Agreement in 1965. “The box was supposed to be wood, but I was in a rush, so I put checked steel in it. I’ll
stick with that for now. I’m going to give this truck to my son and I’ve got another project on the go. He can modify it the way he wants. I have a 1979 short box that I want to do, something with a little more horsepower and more and sporty,” said Acie. “This has only 130 horsepower and bone stock original. But, it still sounds good.” Acie doesn’t have the blues going to car shows. “I enjoy going to car shows and talking to same-minded people. They appreciate the amount of work that goes into these vehicles.”

It will involve 80 to 90 bowlers at Tabb Lanes from 1 to 3 p.m. The purpose of the Bowl-a-thon is to increase the awareness of Centra Cam’s programs and to raise funds to offset rising costs. “The Bowl-athon is our major annual fundraiser, so please support our bowlers on their pledge sheets,” said Iona Brager, Bowl-a-thon chair of the Centra Cam Voca-

Porsche best retained value vehicle by Black Book By Murray Green
Porsche received two awards recently. The Best Retained Value titles went to Panamera and Cayenne models in their respective categories. Canadian Black Book (CBB) said that Porsche Canada has received the
Overall Brand Luxury award: a recognition for the brand that has the best retained value on average throughout the entire product portfolio. The models were picked as winners for Best Retained Value in the premium luxury car and mid-
size luxury SUV categories, respectively. “We are delighted to accept the Overall Brand Luxury and the two model awards from Canadian Black Book,” said Marc Ouayoun, president and CEO, Porsche Cars Canada. “These acknowl-
edgments by the leading authority reinforce the value retention of our product line which ultimately benefit our customers.” The Best Retained Value Awards are presented to vehicles which retain the highest percentage of their MSRP after four years.
This represents the third year in a row that Cayenne tops its category and the fifth consecutive year for Panamera. Porsche Cars Canada, distributes Porsche vehicles in Canada. The company employs a team of more than 50 employees.

Edward (Ed) Joseph Rau Olympian Benefits of Chocolate
Watching Winter Olympic events always generates mixed reactions. On one hand, it’s thrilling and amazing to see what human beings can do – the skill, the discipline, the breathtaking achievements on ice and snow. And of course, it’s even more thrilling when Canadian athletes do well. On the other hand, for those of us who lean towards the stodgy and klutzy end of the physical fitness spectrum, watching snowboarders fling themselves around, skaters swoop and glide and leap, curlers make chunks of granite do what they’re told–this can be a little intimidating. Not a cell in my body is ever going to attempt any of that. For a couch potato, it’s a mystery to ponder what would drive fellow human beings to want to do any of those things. In this context, and in February – Valentine’s month and therefore chocolate month – it was a delight to encounter an apparently legitimate and evidencebased article entitled, “7 Proven Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate.” According to a 2017 article by Chris Gunnar, B.Sc. for a website called “Authority Nutrition”, quality dark chocolate can do everything from lower blood pressure to increase brain power. The catch: it needs to be quality dark chocolate – the darker the better – with a high cocoa content. Wimpy too-sugary chocolate does not have the same health benefits. It’s the cocoa in dark chocolate that provides the health benefits. Curious about how dark chocolate could have health benefits? Here goes with five of them, at least according to the article. Dark chocolate is nutritious–rich in fibre and minerals. The article says dark chocolate with a high cocoa content contains a good amount of fibre and is loaded with minerals–iron, magnesium, copper, manganese, potassium, phosphorous, zinc and selenium. Who knew? Dark chocolate is a source of antioxidants. As I understand it, lots of our food, especially highly-processed food, contains molecules that fling off “free radicals” which can damage our cells and cause illness. Anti-oxidants neutralize and remove these free radicals from the bloodstream. Dark chocolate has organic compounds that function as antioxidants. Take that, free radicals! Dark chocolate may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. Several longterm studies appeared to show that people who ate dark chocolate several times a week were less likely to have plaque in their arteries, and less likely to experience any form of cardiovascular disease. The author’s hypothesis was that this was a result of the anti-oxidant abilities of dark chocolate. I’m certainly willing to add “Eat dark chocolate” to my list of ways to fend off heart disease. Dark chocolate may protect your skin against the sun. Some of the compounds within dark chocolate can improve blood flow to the skin and increase skin density and hydration. This in turn can help protect against sun damage. The article actually suggests – apparently with a straight face – that if you’re going on a beach holiday, consider loading up on dark chocolate in the weeks and months before the holiday. Not the usual advice! But I’m willing to try it. Dark chocolate may improve brain function. The article say that a study of healthy volunteers showed that eating dark chocolate improved blood flow to the brain, and that cocoa may also improve cognitive function in older people with mental impairment. Well! I’m all about cognitive function and if dark chocolate helps, so be it! I did notice heavy use of the word “may” in the article’s description of dark chocolate benefits, but I’m not going to quibble. So, as I eat dark chocolate and watch astonishing physical achievements of Olympic athletes, there’s not a speck of intimidation. I’m secure in the knowledge that, while I’ll never be an Olympic or any other kind of athlete, I am nevertheless benefiting my health. Not that dark chocolate needs to have health benefits. ***

CRITTER CALAMITY
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Hospice Society of Camrose and District CFCW Critters Hockey game was a great success and raised approximately $13,000 for the Hospice Society. Critters won the game in a close 16-12, with a little help from all the shenanigans of the Critters mascot, seen here on top their net shooting a water gun at Camrose players. Corcoran ready for Breaking Boundaries recital By Murray Green
Camrose sopranoist Kathleen Corcoran will be singing her own solo concert Breaking Boundaries at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, Feb. 24 beginning at 2 p.m. “The fact that I’m singing for a Camrose audience is of significant importance to me. These are the people I move through the world with. It is a privilege to be able to share fabulous music with local friends and family,” said Kathleen, associate professor of music at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus. “You never know for sure how your music impacts the people you are sharing it with. The hope is that you always touch them in some special way. It takes them away from life and any struggles they may have, and they can forget about everything else and be part of the music. When that happens, it is truly a success in a performance.” She is an international singer, adjudicator and educator. Her warm, clear voice and interpretive skills merge into beautiful music including art song, opera, cabaret and folk. This is an excellent opportunity to hear Kathleen stretching beyond the usual classical recital format. “I have had the good fortune to share performances in many places throughout the world (North America, Europe and Asia) and that may sound impressive, but an audience is a collection of people and people are predominantly the same regardless of geographic location. The Camrose audience is the most important to me. It is usually my family, friends, colleagues, students and acquaintances—the people who directly influence me and who I live among; they deserve my best and I am preparing and hoping to bring them my vocal and artist best. It is my privi-
Kathleen Corcoran
lege to share exquisite and accessible music with my community,” said Kathleen. The project idea came from fellow colleague Milton Schlosser. “He suggested that we have a recital in the Lougheed series. Because it was his idea we started with a piano recital.” However, a medical leave changed the direction of the performance. “The creation process for this recital program could be regarded as a metaphor for life. It was an exercise in adaptability and flexibility. Initial plans of voice and piano were modified and then modified further, such that the end product looks nothing like the original. The end result
is a program of voice with guitar, voice with violin and voice with harp. It has evolved into a truly boundary breaking recital format, since there will not be any voice and piano,” she explained. The piano is usually the foundation of the formal classical vocal recital. “I used this opportunity to highlight gorgeous repertoire for voice and instruments other than piano,” Kathleen said. “We are really Breaking Boundaries with this recital.” Kathleen turned down opportunities to be a professional singer, because she was wanted to be a teacher/educator first and help others develop to reach their goals in voice. “I was asked to per-
form in Europe when I was younger, when I just started teaching here. I planned for having a family and being a professor,” she continued. “We teach to strive for excellence and reach the best possible level we can. My mantra to students is: be brave, not perfect. You have to engage entirely with what you are communicating. In practice you are concerned about doing it the right way, in the performance you have to trust that the preparation has been sufficient. Then you share, be brave and communicate. Hopefully, this inspires students. It should also help them with the challenges and impatience. They have to understand that I am still learning.
You have to dive in and do it. If you wait until you’re perfect, it doesn’t happen. You always want to be learning.” Guest artists for this program will include celebrated musicians Maya Rathnavalu, Trevor Sanders and Gordon Ritchie. “Maya is a Camrose violinist and I cannot overstate the skill and artistry of this musician. She is phenomenal and is a representative of the excellence, which is embedded in our community. Many of us may not even be aware of the exceptional people who live next door. I taught Maya as a voice student, not as a violinist.” She is also supported by a well known artist. “Guitarist (and also a former voice student) Trevor Sanders is another guest artist, who may be known to a number of people in the community. A virtuosic guitarist, Trevor teaches music theory and guitar for the university and our conservatory program. He is an excellent teacher and performer. You will have a chance to hear his virtuosity through some of our Spanish repertoire for soprano and guitar.” Kathleen shows her flexibility with the variety of music she has chosen. “The final set of the program will include beautiful ballads and songs from the Celtic tradition with the wonderful Edmontonbased harpist, Gordon Ritchie. We plan to deliver on the promise that you will leave with a song in your heart. The timing is right for me to share my recital with all of Camrose and area.” Kathleen is not getting paid for her concert. Her proceeds from the recital will go back into the Augustana music department, similar to Schlosser’s arrangement in the past.
Members of Petra, Whiteheart to play in Kingman By Murray Green
The Union of Sinners and Saints are on a Storyteller Tour that includes a stop in Kingman at the Cornerstone Christian Academy on Thursday, Feb. 22. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7 p.m. The Union of Sinners and Saints will be presenting an acoustic concert. “We’re pretty excited about it and we hope that there are a lot of people in our community who will also get excited. It isn’t every day that members
from big-time Christian bands drop by a small community like Kingman,” said school chair Deanna Margel. The Union of Sinners and Saints is a Christian band formed by members of Petra and Whiteheart, both huge Christian bands back in the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s. “Out of the blue, we were asked if we would be interested in hosting an acoustic concert at the school. It will be a fantastic opportunity for the community to join together
in an evening of celebration. There won’t be any cost for admission, but we are asking that people call our business manager to reserve tickets (just to ensure we don’t exceed our fire regulations capacity). It is a fundraising event, so we will be collecting a freewill offering. Donations will go toward keeping the school operational next year,” she added. In 2016, John Schlitt, lead singer of Petra, and Billy Smiley, guitarist, singer and founding member of Whiteheart, teamed
up to form The Union of Sinners and Saints. Some of the most requested songs in Christian music have come from Petra and Whiteheart. They have sold more than 12 million albums between them, with more than 25 number one songs, and more than 15 Grammy and 40 Dove nominations and awards. The Union of Sinners and Saints will feature many songs from classic Christian rock such as “Beyond Belief,” “Independence Day,” “The Coloring Song,” “The Riv-
er Will Flow,” “Hit You Where You Live” and “Desert Rose”. Although there is no charge for admission, tickets must be reserved in advance to guarantee seating. Tickets will be available at the door on Thursday, but once building capacity is reached, no further admittance will be possible. Tickets are available by calling Amy Lauber at 780-940-3290 or email at ccasociety@gmail.com.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Junior Kodiaks ground Eagles in AJHL action By Murray Green
Jacob Kendall of the Camrose Kodiaks scored twice to lead his team to a 5-1 victory over the Canmore Eagles on Feb. 11. Kendall opened and closed the scoring in the game. Camrose went up 2-0 on a tally from Brock Bremer about two minutes later. The Eagles responded with one in the middle of the period. In the second period, Zach Vinnell and Nic Correale added to the lead with single markers. Goalie Luke Lush stopped 17 of 18 shots. Camrose had 35 shots on the net including 20 in the middle frame. On Feb. 9, Kodiaks forced overtime against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons, but came out on the wrong end of a 5-4 score. Camrose came out strong with a goal in each of the first two periods, both off the stick of Bremer. Then the wheels fell off the Kodiaks’ train as Fort McMurray scored four goals in less than five minutes. Camrose scrambled back to tie the contest with markers from Ryan McKinnon and McKenzie Welke. Lush stopped 30 of 35 shots he faced. The Kodiaks have three home games left in the regular season. They host the Calgary Mustangs on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.; the Okotoks Oilers on Feb. 25 at 2 p.m.; and the Calgary Canucks on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. Bear facts
