For her effort, we’re rewarding her with a cheque for $20.00. Do you enjoy reading The Camrose Booster? Show us with a picture! Drop off, mail or email a photo of you reading your Booster while vacationing, along with a brief explanation. Be sure your travel destination can be identified by a sign or landmark. Or, have someone take your photo while you’re enjoying the home team paper in an unlikely situation. Throughout the year, these photos will be published in The Camrose Booster. Aquatic Centre project update proposed to council By Lori Larsen

City council members were presented with proposed phasing options including cost options for the Aquatic Centre Project during the Feb. 20 Committee of Whole meeting. City of Camrose Community Services general manager, Ryan Poole, provided council with information regarding the three proposed options and costs. All three options include the following proposed changes: an additional building adjoined onto the present building to the west; new eight-lane competition fitness pool; new bleachers; new building to house mechanical and pool equipment rooms; two new event rooms; new inground accessible hot tub; steam room; reconfigured existing pool to include more tot play area, lazy river and training pool; increased size and upgraded family change rooms; improved staff change areas; upgrades to the lobby/front area including a more open concept reception area; spot repairs to the existing roof; front door area upgrades to cladding and windows; new building HVAC mechanical; new sand/defender filtration for the pool; water slide (option to pre-install connections for a future water slide) and a diving board. “The design (by Clark Builders and BR2 Architecture) has come as a result, mostly, of the survey we conducted, plus some oneon-one meetings with the different youth groups, swim club, synchro club, triathlon club, lifesaving club and as well the seniors’ fitness club,” noted Poole. “But the biggest feedback

we received was from the survey we conducted, where we had 1,900 respondents.” Poole indicated the options presented did not affect the scope of the changes, but varied around the phasing of the construction and shutting down the facility. Option 1, full phased/ minimal shut down, would involve construction of the addition, including the lane pool, while also doing some change room upgrades followed by a minimal shutdown to link mechanical systems, then followed by opening the new lane pool with a shutdown of the existing pool. The estimated total time would be 26 months at an estimated total cost of $18,159,667, $ 6,159,667 over the $12,000,000 budget. Option 2, full shutdown, would involve the facility being fully shut down from the start of the project (including two summers) providing minimal disruption to the construction. The estimated total time would be 15 months at an estimated total cost of $16,660,190, $4,660,190 over the $12,000,000 budget. Option 3, partial shutdown, would involve the addition being constructed to close up while the existing pool continues to operate. Once the construction begins to move to the interior work and renovation of the old pool, the facility would be fully shut down. The estimated total time would be 18 months (with a 12-month closure) at an estimated cost of $16,912,816, $4,912,816 over the $12,000,000 budget. “The original budget that we planned was really focused on a reduced scope,”

Ryan Poole

explained Poole. “Once we got all the surveys back and we spoke with the community groups and had discussions with council, we realized if all we did was build a six- maybe eight-lane addition with a very simple structure and did nothing to the change rooms and very little to the existing pool, we weren’t really meeting the needs of the community.” Council comments

Councillor Wayne Throndson remarked that the numbers (costs) were a little bit shocking. “If we deferred it (Aquatic Centre Upgrade), and I am not saying cancel the project, but deferred it to a future date, do we have to throw away costs we have incurred already?” Poole indicated that there would not be a lot of throw-away costs because the design could be reused down the road, should the project be deferred for a short period of time. A longer period (example 10 years or even less) may render the present designs no longer viable. Poole added, “If the project was delayed a longer period of

time, we would have to go about rebuilding the spray park.” City of Camrose manager Malcolm Boyd said a significant delay may result in going a different direction entirely, which could mean building an allnew facility from scratch. Councillor Max Lindstrand inquired as to the impact a shutdown for 12 to 15 months would have on community users, and is there a contingency plan for access to other facilities? Poole explained, “We have had discussion with our organized users (sports groups, swim club) and potentially we would build a partnership with them that would come at a cost, with helping them afford the bussing to go to, the natural fit, Wetaskiwin. “As for the general public, swim lessons and those types of users, the feedback we received indicated that they were willing to make adjustments and go to Wetaskiwin in order to end up with a better product in Camrose in the end.” Councillor Agnes Hoveland requested not

only the loss of revenue costs during shutdown (as per councillor Kevin Hycha’s inquiry), but also the cost of accommodating the transportation to and from the Wetaskiwin facility. Councillor PJ Stasko requested administration provide information on where the funding would come from or be allocated. Mayor Norm Mayer said, “I am very committed to seeing this project (Aquatic Centre Upgrade) proceed and I think my choice would be Option 2. We can get into the finer details of costing later. We have to be careful at this point because it has not gone out for tender. “I think we have a project that has been delayed for many years. While our residents have been putting up with it, it has not been very satisfactory. I believe there are ways of making the dollars work and I am prepared to go in that direction to make that come to fruition.” Councillor Throndson voiced a concern about going over the pool project budget by approximately $4.5 million with the high costs of the Waste Water Treatment Plant Upgrade project looming. “It was a unanimous vote to go ahead with the pool project, at the stage we are at. Until we have numbers that are firm on our Waste Water Treatment Plant project, whether we have to go lagoon or mechanical, I don’t see how we can proceed with a meaningful next step on the pool.” Boyd suggested the next step with the pool project would be to continue discussion, including budgets, in camera.

Letters to the Editor Acceptance: a Pillar of Joy

Once upon a time in the 1990s, I experienced a twoyear program in which every month we were privileged to hear from women and men in their “elder statesman” phase. This is what I noticed. All of them were leaders, had cut new paths in their various fields of expertise. All of them, at some point, had looked into the face of more challenges and in some cases more evil, than most of us have experienced. All of them radiated inner joy. They had no more points to prove, were at peace with themselves and the world, and radiated joy. I wondered, “How did they get there?” I thought of them as I read about The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World, by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu with Douglas Abrams (2016). ***

In 2015, Archbishop Tutu traveled to the Dalai Lama’s home in Dharamsala, India, to celebrate his 80th birthday and to engage in an important conversation: how can we find joy in the face of life’s suffering? During their five-day conversation they identified eight pillars of joy. One of the pillars was “acceptance”–the ability to accept our life in all its pain, imperfection and beauty. ***

Acceptance is the opposite of resignation and defeat. Both the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Tutu are tireless activists for creating a better world for all, but their activism comes from a deep acceptance of what is. As a young newly-chosen spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama accepted the reality of being forced into exile from Tibet. He did not accept that he could no longer be a spiritual leader. Archbishop Tutu accepted the reality of cruel apartheid in South Africa. He did not accept that apartheid was inevitable. ***

The Dalai Lama quotes, “Why be unhappy about something if it can be remedied? And what is the use of being unhappy if it cannot be remedied?” The wisdom of that quote has not prevented me from railing against unfairness, injustice, discomfort or even mere inconvenience. But, as Archbishop Tutu says, “The acceptance of reality is the only place from which change can begin.” The question is not, “How do we escape frustrations and hardships?” The question is, “How can we use this as something positive?” ***

The Dalai Lama uses the example of living next to a difficult neighbour. “You can live in anxiety and despair that you will never have a good relationship with your neighbour. You can deny the problem or pretend that you do not have a difficult relationship with your neighbour. None of these is very helpful. Instead, you can accept that your relationship with your neighbour is difficult and that you would like to improve it. “You may or may not succeed, but all you can do is try. “You cannot control your neighbour but you do have some control over your thoughts and feelings. Instead of anger, instead of hatred, instead of fear, you can cultivate kindness toward them, you can cultivate warm-heartedness toward them. This is the only chance to improve the relationship. In time, maybe they will become less difficult. Maybe not. This you cannot control, but you will have your peace of mind. You will be able to be joyful and happy whether your neighbour becomes less difficult or not.” That is the essence of acceptance: acknowledge what is, and focus on what is within our power to influence–our thoughts, words and actions–without expecting any external outcome. Simple but not necessarily easy! ***

The other seven pillars of joy: perspective, humility, humour, forgiveness, gratitude, compassion, generosity. Sound familiar? They’re all aspects of most of the world’s spiritual traditions. When I think back to the elder women and men whose inner joy impressed me, I can see that they all demonstrated these qualities. These are the tasks of maturity–though I’ve seen them demonstrated by children. These are the qualities of true leaders. And these are pillars of a joyful life, no matter how challenging our external circumstances. ***

Anti-bullying day is a day where people wear pink to symbolize a stand against bullying. Bullying can be harassment, spreading rumours, sharing embarrassing information or threatening someone physically or emotionally. Our high school-aged daughter has been the victim of bullying. It started off with the spreading of hurtful rumours about her character and escalated to stalking and threats of violence. We reported these incidents to the school administration, parent council, school board, school trustees, County Peace Officers and RCMP. All the parties seemed genuinely concerned. Both the RCMP and County Peace Officer took statements and were keeping a watchful eye. The education community, in our opinion, did not seem to be able to do much. The bully was given a scolding but that was about it. Our daughter had to remain in the classroom with someone who tried to harm her physically and mentally. How was she supposed to learn in this environment? We question the motto, Every student, every day a success. Hardly, in our daughter’s case. We felt

that unless our daughter was assaulted in front of a teacher on school grounds, the school’s hands were tied and we wished the school could do more to protect the victims of bullying. There needs to be more than one day a year to raise awareness about bullying because, unfortunately, we still live in a society that accepts and enables this behaviour. Pink Shirt Day is a wonderful initiative, but we’re not sure everyone is getting the message. Andrea Uglem, Bawlf School boards

Nova Scotia’s decision to dismantle its seven English school boards as per the recommendations of the Glaze Report “Raise the Bar” is not only disappointing, but gravely concerning. Raise the Bar was developed following a scant three week consultation last fall and contains a number of concerning comments. For example, the report states that lack of turnover in trustees is indicative of disinterest and an inability to attract qualified candidates, when in fact, those who serve do so because they are passionate about our children’s education. In fact, the work is challenging, marginally compensated and critically important. Additionally, the report cites outdated student achievement data, places a disproportionate emphasis on standardized test scores and ignores a plethora of socioeconomic factors for which good governance can be a solution. In short, the government’s decision to dismantle school boards fails to acknowledge the value locally-elected school boards bring to our communities. As president, and on

behalf of Alberta’s 61 member public, separate and francophone school boards, I am saddened by the Nova Scotia government’s decision to eliminate locallyelected school boards. By virtue of being locallyelected, school boards’ abilities to reflect community voices and priorities in decision-making has resulted in Alberta being recognized as one of the best education systems in the world. Well-governed school boards, connected and responsive to their communities ensure an education system that is best positioned to deliver value to the communities and families they serve. For Albertans who do not have children in our school system, I would like to say that K-12 education impacts every person. Every day, each of us interacts with someone whose success as an adult was shaped by their educational experience. That is why school board elections where every citizen has a choice in determining how the K-12 education system is governed are important. School boards recognize the importance of working collaboratively with their communities, government, and each other as partners in education. What may appear to be dysfunction—as the report states—is more accurately school boards expressing their due diligence to make fully-informed decisions. As locally-elected representatives, they are connected with—and responsive to— their local communities and are uniquely positioned to ensure the very best outcomes for all students. Mary Martin, president, Alberta School Boards Association

Coultis receives Sovereign’s Medal

PANHANDLE PRODUCTIONS

By Lori Larsen

Local resident and former Camrose Police Service constable Tom Coultis recently received the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers which was presented to him by Mayor Norm Mayer during the Feb. 20 regular council meeting in the presence of council members, City administration, Camrose Police Chief Mark Neufeld, Deputy Chief Lee Foreman and friends of Tom’s. As an official Canadian honour, the medal recognizes exceptional volunteer achievements from across the country or abroad in a wide range of fields. Tom received the award in recognition of his significant volunteer contribution. For nearly 70 years, Tom has been volunteering in different capacities with the Royal Canadian Legion, and continues to be a devoted member volunteering his time with the Nov. 11 ceremonies, Decoration Day ceremonies, arranging funerals and recording burials for veterans and the recording of veterans’ graves. Tom took a minute to graciously thank Mayor Mayer and City council for taking the time to honour him and present the award and also thanked friends for nominating him and attending the presentation.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Mayor Norm Mayer, on behalf of the City and City Council, congratulates Tom Coultis on receiving the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers for his exceptional volunteering contributions.

As a senior, here are some of the most common things that you could claim on your income tax and benefit return at tax time. • Pension income splitting: As a pensioner, you may be eligible to split up to 50 per cent of your eligible pension income with your spouse or commonlaw partner to reduce the amount of income tax you may have to pay, if your spouse or common-law partner is in a lower tax bracket. This may save you tax as a couple. • Registered retirement savings plan deduction: Deductible contributions to your plan can reduce your tax owing. You have until Dec. 31 of the year in which you turn 71 to contribute to your plan. • Medical expenses: You may be able to claim eligible medical expenses you or your spouse or common-law partner paid in any 12-month period ending in 2017. This period is extended to 24 months in case of death. • Age amount: If you were 65 years of age or older on Dec. 31, 2017, and your net income was less than $84,597, you may be able to claim up to $7,225 on your return. • Disability tax credit: If you, your spouse or common-law partner, or your dependant have a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or men-

must file your taxes by April 30 to make sure your benefits get renewed. • Goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit: You may be eligible for tax-free quarterly payments that help individuals and families with low and modest income offset all or part of the GST or HST that they pay. If you have a spouse or common-law partner, only one of you can receive the credit. When you file your taxes, the CRA automatically determines your eligibility. • Registered disability savings plan: This type of plan helps Canadians with disabilities and their families save for the long-term financial security of a person who is eligible for the disability tax credit. Contributions to such a plan are not tax deductible, but you can make them until the end of the year in which the beneficiary turns 59. Kodiaks tame Bobcats in overtime By Murray Green

Kyler Kupka of the Camrose Kodiaks scored twice, including the overtime winner, to give his team a 4-3 victory over the Lloydminster Bobcats on Feb. 19. Ryan Hartman also scored two tallies, both on the power play in the third period to set up the overtime. Lloydminster had a 2-1 lead after the second frame, but the Kodiaks made a comeback. Goalie Gr if f in Bowerman stopped 19 of 22 shots. Camrose had 32 shots on the Bobcats’ net. Jacob Kendall notched a power play marker midway through the third period to give Camrose a 4-3 win over the Canmore Eagles on Feb. 16. Kodiaks went up 2-1 in the opening period with goals coming from McKenzie Welke and Colby Wolter. Camrose added to the lead in the second, when Daine Milgate scored early. However, the Eagles answered back to keep the game close. Canmore received some spark in the third, when they scored on a shorthanded opportunity. Bowerman stopped 29 of 32 shots he faced to receive the win. The Kodiaks’ last home game in the regular season is against the Calgary Canucks on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.

Joe Nolan and the Dogs will be unleashing some new music from their recent album (late 2017) on March 3 at the Bailey Theatre starting at 8 p.m. “I enjoy playing in Camrose and it’s been quite awhile since I have played there. I’ve played at the Bailey before and it is a gorgeous room, so I’m really looking forward to coming back,” recalled Joe. “I used to hang out in Camrose a lot because my sister worked at Augustana.” His ground-breaking new record Cry Baby hits close to home and is a departure from his previous work. “My music needs to be seen live. It is dynamic and I feel like a chameleon because it is changing every day. I cross into different genres and this show is going to be with a band. It is going to be mix of rock and roll, blues and roots,” described Joe. “I feel I’ve been restricted in the past, but now, this is totally my music. I already want to record another album in a different direction. I want to break out of that box I’ve been in. It starts by listening to other albums and taking pieces and putting them together. It still starts with a paper and pen.” He is part of the Rose

City Roots Music Society series. He is a songwriter who has come from the shadows of open mic nights to the tour stages. He has a distinctive and intimate sound. “My songs evolve because I bring them to the band and things get added. It all begins with a vision. Bryan Adams has always been an inspiration to me. He has no limits and no fear. I’m always changing and evolving my love for music,” explained Joe. “Most of my time has been as a solo artist. It changes my music by being in a band. It changes the music.” Cry Baby is a collection of 11 songs. The vision behind this album is one that Nolan has kept locked up inside for more than three years since his last album. “I hope I’ve made some fans in Camrose. I want to reach everybody with my music.” Tommy Banks wrote a string arrangement for the final song. The song is called “Ode To Sturgeon County.” The song is a confessional on Joe’s past few years, as well as his childhood. He sent it to Tommy and asked if he would be interested in being a part of it and writing a string arrangement for it. He immediately got back, saying he would love to.

Emma! to appear on big stage

Duggan Cinemas is on and

By Murray Green

About Time Productions will be bringing the popular musical play Emma! to the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre stage for five shows. “I really wanted to play the lead role so I can challenge myself and it was familiar. She is a lot like me in the good ways,” said Rebekah Cardinal, who plays Emma. “It was a long process to secure our roles. We played games, got to know each other and all of the time we were auditioning for roles.” About Time Productions features youth who want to become more involved in theatre in the community in the future. There are 19 local cast members in the play. “He (Jeff) was the role I was shooting for as well. I was surprised because I wasn’t sure it was the best fit for me. This is my first main role and it sets me up for a challenge. I’m thinking of turning acting into a career, so this fits my progression,” said Tadhg Barker, who plays Jeff Knightly. Emma, a senior at Highbury Prep, is certain she knows what’s best for her classmates’ love lives and is determined to find the perfect boyfriend for shy sophomore Harriet by the end of the school year. “Because this is a pop musical with well-known songs, it is hard. Everyone knows the words and is listening for this part, or another part. I have to step up my game because everyone is expecting it to be a certain way. The music is more challenging than the acting,” said Rebekah. “The music spans a wide range. We have music in the background, but we have to sing all of the words.” Smooth transitions are important in musicals. “I think musicals are more challenging because you are not just trying to convey lines, you have to sing and dance, which is more tiring and physically demanding,” added Tadhg. “I love a great play, but I admire musicals more.” Emma!, a timeless love story from one of the most widely-read writers of all time, is a musical that will entice modern audiences to fall in love again with one of the adored characters. Emma, a beautiful and clever young woman, who prides herself on her matchmaking ability, is preoccupied with romance yet is clueless to her own feelings of love. “Emma is the leader in the school, but not in a bully way. She is respectable and someone other people look up to,” explained Rebekah. “Because she focuses so much on other people, she doesn’t realize things about herself. It isn’t

until the end that she realizes her needs.” When she takes on a young friend as her latest project, her well-intentioned efforts misfire, leading to a whirlwind of complications. “Jeff found Emma years ago, but Emma didn’t find Jeff. He is one of the smartest people in the school. When two teachers get married and leave on a honeymoon, he is asked to be the substitute teacher. Emma doesn’t think that is the best thing for a student to be doing. He changes from being shy to talking about things

he doesn’t know a lot about,” shared Tadhg. “We have a lesson to learn from the play. People can relate to certain things they knew from high school. It is a lot of a fun to watch. People will know the music,” said Rebekah. “I expect people to walk out saying, ‘I remember that song’. People will enjoy it,” said Tadhg. Emma! runs from Friday, March 2 to Wednesday, March 7. PIGS are starting the second leg of a 12-week, 45-date tour that includes a performance in Camrose on Feb. 28 at the Bailey Theatre. “Every show on this tour has been amazing and we’ve been honored to share our love of the (Pink) Floyd with so many fans,” said Josh Szczepanowski, band leader. “The crowds are great and really love what we are doing.” Over the past few years, PIGS: Canada’s Pink Floyd, have toured BC and Alberta extensively. “People always say you should find a job you love and we really love what we do,” said Szczepanowski. PIGS shows truly are a labour of love – every night of the tour has different songs and visuals added to their sets to accommodate fan requests. Twelve different guitars and basses are used each night and Josh estimates they must have played ‘Echoes’ for a total of 15 hours over the course of the tour so far. PIGS welcome the challenges and find it keeps their shows fresh, dynamic, authentic and exciting for their fans. At a number of stops on their tour, PIGS invited local youth choirs to join them on stage to sing, “Another Brick In The Wall Part 2”, from Pink Floyd album, The Wall. Their collaboration with the choirs was a real treat for the audience, and a great experience for the kids – as well as one of the most memorable tour moments for the band. “The crowds went crazy whenever the kids started singing,” said Szczepanowski. “We love the concept of inviting the local community into our show and on stage we all get a real boost watching the kids perform.” They were formed in 2008 in Victoria to honour Pink Floyd’s music like no other tribute. They have spent nine years meticulously getting the sound and gear right to re-create the live sound and concert experience of ’70s Pink Floyd and have been perfecting their craft in front of sold out audiences throughout Canada. The band will perform selections from the entire Floyd catalog, including a few special surprises from Floyd solo records. In addition to classics from legendary albums like Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall, the band will showcase material that has rarely–if ever–been performed live by Pink Floyd.

Bridging gaps and building hope By Lori Larsen

People often feel a certain degree of apprehension when it comes to the topic of loss, specifically of death and dying. Pair that with a perceived gap between generations and suddenly there are missed opportunities. Nicole Luft can appreciate the difficulty some young adults may have in finding a fit with elders but for her, it simply comes naturally. Born and raised in Didsbury, as an only child Nicole typically found herself surrounded by older people. “I grew up with adults my whole life,” she commented. “There were other children around, but usually it was just me and the older folks. I guess because of that I feel like I have a connection with older people and enjoy being around them.” While it may have been that unspoken connection that brought Nicole to the service of the Camrose and District Hospice Society (with a little help from Hospice program coordinator Bill Harder), it is, most certainly, what keeps her there. In 2011 Nicole came to Camrose to begin her undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta Augustana. She graduated in 2016 with a degree in Physical Education/Kinesiology. In between schooling, Nicole worked for Stockmen’s Chophouse where she met Jenni Routhier (supervisor at the time) who quickly encouraged Nicole to join the Community Organization Reaching Everyone (CORE) group. “ They (CORE) meet every Friday morning from 8 until 10 a.m. at the Ruffington (House),” said Nicole. “We have coffee and talk about what is happening in our community and we get to meet new people in our community.” It was here that Nicole first met Bill Harder. “He asked me if I would like to do some volunteering with the Hospice,” she smiled. “I couldn’t say no because I have never tried it,” a mantra that Nicole believes in wholeheartedly. Nicole began volunteering with the Grief Walking group in May of 2017 and leads the group by assisting new members in filling out the waiver forms, preparing and serving coffee, helping with readings that are done at every meeting and walking alongside the grief walkers in the journey on the path and in their lives. “The group (Grief Walkers) meets every Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. either at Mir-

ror Lake or the Recreation Centre in the winter,” said Nicole. “We walk for a half hour then have coffee after. It sounds simple but it is the people who make the group. They are so easy to get along with, so welcoming to everybody.” As she flits around pouring coffee and making sure the walkers are all taken care of, their faces light up and it becomes apparent that Nicole’s contribution goes far beyond what words can write. She recalls telling her own mother and grandmother about her volunteer experience with the Grief Walkers. “They (mother and grandmother) came up to visit one Tuesday and I decided to take them with me to the Grief Walkers, so they could experience the people I get to be with. There were tears and everyone was telling them how appreciative they were of me,” she said shyly. “My mom and grandma were so proud of me.” Nicole is the first to admit in the beginning there was a little skepticism. A young person trying to find a comfort level in speaking about loss and assisting new people in getting over their own fears and misgivings. “People are usually very nervous or scared to come to the group but once they do come they say how amazing the group is and that they wished they had come sooner. “I listen to their stories and try to understand and not necessarily give feedback. You can see the relief in them that they get by expressing their thoughts and there has been lots of tears, but that’s okay. “It is the highlight of my week to go there and

see those people. As we have grown to know each other I have developed a real bond with most of them.” Nicole has also reaped tremendous rewards from volunteering. She has found herself sharing time outside the grief walking group, enjoying a cup of coffee and conversation. Nicole encourages younger people to get involved and volunteer, specifically with the Hospice. “People my age, generally speaking, have not experienced a loss or even been to a funeral before and that is somewhat shocking.” She continued by saying that grief is everywhere and not just in the loss of people but the loss of a job or a partner through a divorce and that people don’t necessarily have the skills to cope with it. Offering advice to the younger generation about volunteering Nicole suggested. “Don’t be afraid to volunteer, it may benefit you in the long run, in so many ways. That two hours that you take watching television you could be using to make someone else’s life, and your own, better.” For a minute she pondered, what if she had said no to volunteering for the Grief Walkers. “I would have never had the opportunity to be with this group. “I am trying to find my passion and what I enjoy in life because I want that to be my career.” Words of wisdom coming from a young woman who, by volunteering, has been able to sift through things in her life that bring her great joy and others that have less meaning.

Camrose Seniors Coalition: Seniors Chat Submitted by Camrose Primary Care Network

No matter the age and stage in one’s life, community is always an important way for us to take care of one another. One of the ways we do that, is through community organizations like the Camrose Primary Care Network. The network houses an interdisciplinary team of health care experts who are here to help you stay healthy. This team includes your doctor, nurses, and support staff, as well as other health care professionals that are committed to team-based, patient-centred care. Because of the network’s focus on your primary care, they have developed several seniorspecific programs to keep you healthy, keep you safe, and to enhance your quality of life. The Geriatric Assessment Program (GAP) program is designed to help patients and their physician manage their health care as they age. While it does require a referral from your family physician, this program partners with several organizations, such as Alberta Health Services Senior’s Outreach Team and Alberta Health Services Home Care Team, as well as the Healthy Living Centre and many others. The GAP program is designed to help manage: signs of memory loss or established dementia, decreased mobility, difficulty coping in their own home or community, urinary incontinence, frequent falls, comprehensive review of medications and related health concerns. Fall Prevention Program focuses on minimizing the risk of falling in our senior population. The team is comprised of the geriatric nurse lead, care of the elderly physician and the exercise specialist. Together, they look at your fall risk, medical conditions and medications, and bone health. They also design an exercise program to prevent falls and improve your strength and bal-

James ( Jack) Lawrence Bowal July 24, 1924 ~ February 22, 2018 Jack was born on July 24, 1924 on the family farm by Round Hill, AB, the eleventh child of Stanley and Agnes Bowal. He passed away peacefully on February 22, 2018 at the age of 93 years. Jack grew up on the family farm and attended Lake Demay School. While many of his brothers and sisters went off to war, Jack stayed home to help maintain the family farm. He met the love of his life, Lena Kushnerik, at a wedding where they were both in the wedding party. They were married on May 24, 1952 and welcomed six children into their world over the next 16 years. Jack and Lena raised their family in traditional farming style, living off the land. Jack made many memories as an active member of St. Stanislaus Church, coaching the Round Hill men’s hockey team for several years, curling, volunteering with the Round Hill Recreation Board and visiting with family and neighbors. Jack and Lena farmed for 34 years before retiring to Camrose. The farm, homesteaded in 1902, has always been the heart of the Bowal family. Jack was very proud to see his farming legacy live on through his son, Don, and now his grandson, David. His interest and love of the farm continued right until his last days. Jack is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lena; children Bob, Don (Paula), Darryl, Sharon (Larry) Wright, Betty Ann (James) McEathron and Jim (Sheri); sister Josephine; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his parents; brothers Joseph, Adam, Clarence, Carl, infant brother John and Walter; sisters Anne, Mary, Angie and Helen. Rest in peace Jack, Dad, Grandpa and Papa Jack. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday February 28, 2018 from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Larry Pederson as celebrant. Interment will take place in the St. Stanilaus Cemetery, Round Hill. The automotive section of

Wrong turn led to the right classic vehicle By Murray Green

Al Storms believes that talking a wrong turn is the right move sometimes. It led him to a 1955 Oldsmobile Super 88 Rocket that he soon wanted to have. “I bought this car eight years ago from a fellow in Rosedale (near Drumheller). My brother and I were at our grandpa’s funeral, driving around and talking. We took a wrong turn where the suspension bridge is and went on a side street where this car was sitting for sale,” explained Al. “I thought this 1955 Oldsmobile was pretty nice. So, we whipped in to talk to the guy. I said it is probably out of my price range, but he was fair and I ended up getting it for $4,500.” The car almost didn’t get on the trailer. “He says to me I don’t know if I can sell it. I used to take my children to the ice cream shop in it. I told him I have three children and I’m going to do the same with them. I reassured him I’m not going to hack it up and destroy it, it will be as original as I can make it. He said okay and that is what we have done to it.” The 1955 models were heavily facelifted with a new grille, tail lights and body-side chrome. Horsepower for the 324-cubicinch Rocket V8 increased to 185 for 88s and 202 for Super 88s. At mid-year, Olds introduced the new pillarless four-door hardtop body. Al didn’t have to do a lot of work to it. “I polished it up, put new tires on it, and rebuilt the whole front suspension,” he shared. “Since I’ve owned the car, I put in a new rear end, leaf springs, fuel injection, overdrive transmission, headers and dual exhaust. I’ve done quite a bit of work to it. It has been repainted, but it is the original colours. The interior is all original and everything works inside. It even still has the original trunk mat still in the back.” Al wasn’t necessarily looking for an Oldsmobile. “I was looking for 1955 to 1959 car to fix up because those are my favourite

YELLOW ROCKET

years. I think the cars are awesome from those years and this one just popped out at me. I’ve never seen one of these before. I go to a lot of car shows and you don’t see a lot of Oldsmobiles,” he reasoned. The Rocket 88 vaulted Oldsmobile from a somewhat conservative car to a performer that became the one to beat on the NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) circuits. “It is still a GM, but something different. At first, I didn’t like the colour. After I polished it, I started to like the colour and it stuck with me. It reminds me of the ’50s. No power steering, but it was the ’50s. It made sense to me. It is still the original AM radio and I don’t want to change it. I don’t want to lose the experience of driving it like I am in the time period. I mean, I have fuel injection and

overdrive transmission, but the rest of it is good to keep like it was.” With the large, high performance V8, the Oldsmobile 88 is widely considered to be the first muscle car, although this title is disputed. The car came with a 324 super rocket engine, but the motor was gone. “Those engines are very hard to find and very expensive to build. I went with a 350 Chevrolet engine, which is easy to work with. My dad (Stormy) and brother helped me eight years ago with the big re-build. Then last summer, I pulled the engine and re-did it again.” It has become almost his daily driver. “I drive it every chance I get. I just have to hook the wipers up to drive it in the rain, but otherwise, we drive it everywhere, all of the time.” Every Sunday night a

group of local car enthusiasts meet near the McDonalds parking lot

and go for a cruise. “It’s fun and I’ve had lots of fun with this car.”

Eyes on Camrose has taken on the second initiative of getting residents involved in helping to reduce crime. “Eyes on Camrose is a community awareness program encouraging Camrosians to be alert and mindful in their daily lives,” reminded Camrose Police Service crime prevention/community relations Constable Kelly Bauer. “Keeping their Eyes on Camrose is a crime prevention strategy that will help reduce the amount of crimes that occur in our community. The program includes a variety of initiatives or ways that we all can be involved in ensuring that we continue to live in a safe community.” The first initiative is Citizens on Patrol (COP). For more information on COP email CamroseCOPS@gmail.com. After the Feb. 15 information meeting residents are already signing up to become involved with COP. The second initiative involves an easy way for residents to become more involved in the safekeeping of the community—social media “This month the Camrose Police Service started to become active on social media, utilizing Facebook and Twitter,” explained Const. Bauer.

“All you have to do is follow our Facebook and Twitter pages. Once you follow our page then invite your friends to also follow. The more people that we have following us on social media, the more aware our community will be.”

Some of the information posted on the Camrose Police Service social media include; fraud awareness and scams that are prevalent in the Camrose, community events that police are involved with, interesting investigations, Caught on Camera—photos of suspects that the police are asking for assistance in identifying and notices or alerts. “This is the easiest initiative. Simply following us on social media will increase community awareness, and our community from becoming an easy target to scams, thefts or other crimes. When we are more aware of what is occurring in our community, we will become more resilient against becoming a victim.”

World Day of Prayer service By Murray Green

Thomas the Train: the UN’s latest ambassador

Mattel, the owner of the Thomas the Tank Engine brand, recently announced a new collaboration with the United Nations. Mattel will be revamping the children’s television show, Thomas and Friends, in order to modernize the show, diversify the main characters, and provide more action and adventure for the trains on Sodor Island. Not only will Shauna Wilton, the new version of the show Politics, Augustana include more central female Campus, University characters, including a female of Alberta engine from Africa that Thomas invites to Sodor, it will also incorporate aspects of the UN Millennium Development Goals on education, gender equality, and sustainability into the storylines. As Maher Nasser, director of the UN Creative Community Outreach Initiative insists, “We recognize the power of the creative community and entertainment industry in reaching much wider audiences through story telling.” The UN, Nasser continues, sees its work with partners such as Thomas and Friends, broadcast in over 33 languages and 100 countries, as a way “to translate our messages into everyday language that young people and children can better understand and relate to. Once children understand [the concepts behind the UN Millennium Development Goals], they will grow to be more responsible adults.” Kate Schlomann, representing Thomas and Friends, agreed, stating, “The content hopes to inspire the next generation of global citizens and produce meaningful conversation and learnings between children and parents.” A number of years ago, I published a highly critical paper on the TV series, Thomas and Friends. Essentially, I argued that we need to pay attention to the content of children’s television shows because children learn from the shows they watch, they learn how to behave, interact with others, and how society works. I criticized the show for its strict social hierarchy, which was gendered and racialized, the limited and stereotypical roles for female characters, and the fact that the main job of the engines (who are like children on the show) was just to do what they are told, without questioning! I asked, are these really the lessons we want our children to learn? The new series addresses many of my concerns. While much depends on the how the show is produced and how it deals with the new characters and storylines, these appear to be positive changes. Yet, the response to the announcement by members of the public is reminiscent of the outrage when my research was originally publicized. Why should the show change? Accusations of political correctness and indoctrination abound. This response continues to puzzle me today. Why do people get so upset when a children’s television show is criticized? Why do they see messages of gender equality or caring for the earth as political indoctrination, but either cannot see or do not mind the messages about absolute authority, gender inequality, and racism that earlier versions of the show contained? It appears that privilege is indeed blind. While the original stories by Rev. Awdry reflected a particular time and place in history and the beliefs of the author, shouldn’t contemporary reincarnations of the show reflect our time, our history, and our beliefs? Many defenders of the show argue that it reflects the time and place in which it was created. To change it amounts to historical revisionism. They also say that it is a children’s show and should be left alone, not imbued with political messages. But, if the content doesn’t matter, because it is just entertainment, then changing the messages within the show to be more inclusive and progressive also shouldn’t matter. The very fact that people become so upset with the thought of changing the show suggests that the content does matter. While it is not yet clear how the show will teach children about the UN development goals, other than by having Thomas explore the world and meet more people and creatures from diverse backgrounds, the values behind the UN goals of equality and sustainability are fairly universally accepted. Finding creative ways to teach children about these values is a worthwhile project and Thomas and Friends was overdue for a ‘refresh.’ The collaboration with the UN and people from the countries Thomas will visit seems like a step in the right direction.

Back on March 3, 1922, millions of church women throughout Canada and the United States met as a sisterhood for a day of prayer. That tradition continues today with women and men around the world in 113 languages. In Camrose, it will be the 65th anniversary. A service will be held on Friday, March 2 starting at 1:30 p.m. in the Camrose United Church. The purpose of the World Day of Prayer is to pray with immediate application. In Canada, informed prayer and prayerful action

has provided more than $500,000 in grants to justice projects over the last five years. Women in Canada were not even considered persons under the law until 1927. Women still struggle to be heard on issues that affect them, such as peace negotiations, disaster recovery, policy development and human rights. The World Day of Prayer connects people in authentic, meaningful ways across social, geographic and political barriers by giving a voice to women through sharing their concerns through prayer.

On March 2, Christians in more than 1,200 communities across Canada will gather to learn about, pray for and celebrate environmental issues in solidarity. For more information on the World Day of Prayer service, contact Irene Johnston at 780-672-0704. In Canada, the World Day of Prayer is coordinated by the Women’s InterChurch Council of Canada. The World Day of Prayer has its roots in an ecumenical day of prayer organized by women in Canada and the United States in 1920.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results!

LOST THAT LOVING FEELING? Find it with a personal ad in The Camrose Booster classifieds. Ph. 780-672-3142.

Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

WANTED WILL ACCEPT OLD VEHICLES, machinery, scrap iron, etc. Car batteries (will pay for). Call 780-672-6917 or 780686-5211.

HELP WANTED

Be Honest

OLD CINEMA NIGHT CLUB – DJ wanted, or will train. 780-800-1138.

State Your Price

RDA REQUIRED – at City Centre Dental, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Please fax resumé to 780-672-3089 or email to ccdcamrose@hotmail.com

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else. The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Camrose and area residents are invited to join in an evening of dinner and entertainment at the annual Augustana Chaplaincy Council’s fundraising dinner to be held on March 4 from 5 until approximately 8 p.m. at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus Chapel. “This year’s theme is Faith, Prayer and Serve,” said assistant to Chaplaincy Sara Smith. “This is our annual fundraiser, but more than that, it is a chance for the community to come and see what the Chaplaincy is all about and meet the staff and student leader staff.” The evening provides an opportunity for members of the Camrose and area community to see the passion the student leaders have for what they do and speak with them about what it is like to be a student on campus. Attendees will once again be able to participate in what has been referred to as a “most unusual auction” of items donated by staff and students of Augustana and members of the community. “In the past, we have had everything from hand-carved items to baked goods to hospitality offerings at different cottages. And students donated knitted goods, babysitting services and Sunday School lessons,” noted Smith. Ron Flamand, currently serving as Chaplain for Augustana Chaplaincy, will be the evening’s guest speaker. “He (Flamand) has been a chaplain in many different institutions, schools and hospitals and will talk about what the chaplaincy does, what makes it important and unique in the world and how it serves needs.” Throughout the evening, the Jazz trio of Eric Olson, Steven Hartman and David Salmon will be providing music. Smith commented on the importance of this fundraiser in that it supports events the Chaplaincy conducts throughout the year, including the Tuesday soup suppers, where approximately 120 people are served a free dinner. “A good portion of those people come from the community, students or alumni. This fundraiser also helps give our student leaders some financial support for all the effort they put into their leadership role.” Last year, the event raised approximately $9,800. Tickets are available at the Augustana Campus Chaplaincy office, Wisemen’s Way Bookstore and some churches throughout the community.

Drinking tea has many health benefits. Stay on track with your renewed self-care goals by including a cup of tea. In a survey conducted by Nielsen for the Tea and Herbal Association of Canada, findings showed that positive attitudes towards tea remain strong, with relaxing leading the list for positive health associations for consumers. “Tea is a very versatile drink. Each variety–black, green, oolong, herbal–has a unique taste, so Canadians can try different flavours, finding the ones they

like best,” said Louise Roberge, president of the Tea and Herbal Association of Canada. There’s a tea for every palate and a time for every tea, with research showing that Canadians predominantly drink black and green from early to mid-day and turning to herbal and decaffeinated in the evening. Our multicultural society also plays a large part in the popularity of tea in Canada, as Canadians of all backgrounds are united in their love of tea. A single cup of tea is steeped in healthy benefits that can help

refresh and revitalize all Canadians. Drinking a cup of hot tea everyday can lower blood pressure, decrease cholesterol levels and can aid in overall heart health. “While most Canadians have heard of the health benefits of green tea, it’s important to know that all varieties of tea are good for your overall health,” added Roberge. “Black, green, white and oolong tea are all equally beneficial, since they come from the same plant.”
