Phase two of 48th Avenue bridge project to begin in March By Lori Larsen
Camrose and area residents are advised that Phase Two of the 48 Avenue Bridge Replacement Project construction is ready to begin on March 5 and soon after, the bridge will be closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Phase One, which began in early September 2017 and was completed in late November, included the placement of road fill material into Mirror Lake on either side of 48 Avenue to provide a base for the expanded roadway. The remaining work scheduled to be completed in 2018 will include: the removal of the existing bridge and the installation of the new bridge, the installation of the new pedestrian underpass, the raising of the roadway base and the construction of the new roadway, the construc-
tion of new paved trails on both sides of 48 Avenue and the associated electrical, landscaping and cleanup work. PSA Construction (PSA) is tentatively planning to remobilize their equipment and staff to Camrose on or around March 19, with work scheduled to begin shortly thereafter. Rerouting
In late March, 48 Avenue will be completely closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic between 53 Street and 51 Street and will remain closed until the project is complete and the roadway is re-opened to the public in late August. Traffic will be re-routed with detour route signage throughout the City later in March. Additionally, the City will impose temporary parking restrictions and/or intersection controls to help move
vehicles along the bypass routes, including installing temporary four-way stop signs or adjusting traffic signal timings at key intersections, in order to move vehicles through the detour routes as safely and efficiently as possible. Residents should be aware that during Phase Two, other roadways within the city will experience increased traffic flow. City administration anticipates this will mainly affect the higher volume roadways within the City such as 68 Street, Camrose Drive, 54 Avenue, Grand Drive/50 Avenue, 53 Street, 48A Avenue, 51 Street, 50 Street, 47 Avenue and 44 Avenue. Lower volume roadways throughout the City are expected to see some increase in traffic as well, specifically those roadways located closer to the closure.
The City and AMEC will work with PSA to monitor the traffic accommodation plan, and make appropriate adjustments as needed. Administration is also reviewing the remaining projects in the City’s 2018 construction program in order to reduce potential conflicts with the 48 Avenue Bridge Replacement project, however congestion and delays can be expected. The City would like to thank all residents in advance for their patience and understanding during this major project. For more information on the 48 Avenue Bridge Replacement project, visit the project blog on the City’s website at www.camrose.ca under City Services and City Projects. Direct questions or concerns regarding this project to the City of Camrose
Engineering department at engineer@camrose.ca or at 780-672-4428. The 48th Avenue Bridge Replacement project comes as a result of inspections completed on the bridge over the past few years, that determined the over 50-year-old bridge has reached the end of its life. The project will also include an extra traffic lane for both eastbound and westbound traffic, assisting the City in accommodating expected traffic growth, the raising of the roadway by as much as 1.5 metres reducing the slope of 48 Avenue for eastbound vehicles approaching 51 Street, to improve safety and a new underground pedestrian bypass installed near the east side of the lake connecting the existing paved trails on both sides of 48 Avenue.
Traffic stop results in drug bust By Lori Larsen
As the result of a traffic stop conducted by Camrose Police Service on Feb. 26, a 25-year-old male from Camrose was arrested for being in possession of illegal drugs and drug related items. When police stopped the vehicle operated by the male suspect, they gathered grounds to believe the suspect was in possession of illegal drugs, resulting in a search of the vehicle and seizure of 240 grams of marijuana, 56 grams of shatter (concentrated marijuana extract), two cell phones and $1,080 in cash. A search warrant was
obtained for the suspect’s residence in the Southside Trailer Park resulting in the seizure of the following additional items: 413 grams of marijuana, 102 grams of hashish, 23 grams of shatter, nine ecstasy pills, scales, baggies and other drug-related paraphernalia and $3,015 in cash. The potential total street value of the drugs seized in this investigation is $12,396. Regarding this occurrence, the 25-year-old male has been charged with three counts of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, two counts of Posses-
Items seized
sion of a Controlled Substance, one count of Possession of Proceeds Obtained by Crime and three counts of Failing to Comply with Conditions of a Recognizance. On a separate incident occurring on Sept. 13, 2017, the same suspect had been dealt with by police regarding a similar occurrence involving illegal drugs that were located in a vehicle and inside the suspect’s residence. As a result of that investigation, the suspect was charged with four counts of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance and one count of Possession of Proceeds Obtained by Crime. At that time, he was released from custody on a recognizance with conditions not to possess any illegal drugs and not to possess more than one cellular telephone. Because the Feb. 26 incident was the second drug trafficking occurrence, the suspect was remanded into custody and has a first appearance scheduled for March 7. He also has a trial date set for May 4 regarding his first set of charges. Both matters will be heard in the Camrose Provincial Court.

Youth Mentor Program successful first year By Murray Green
The Camrose Boys and Girls Club had overwhelming success with the Youth Mentor Program in its first year. The program was offered due to the support of the Boys and Girls Clubs, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton and area. A total of 14 youth received mentorship training, mentorship or leadership opportunities within the After School program. “Special group activities and celebrations to youth in Grade 6 to 8 allowed the youth to become mentors to younger children. The mentors had
to complete five modules through a course led by mentorship advisor Katie Grettum in order to become mentors,” explained Rees James, Camrose Boys and Girls executive director. The group put in many hours. “These young people have put in a total of 1,079 volunteer hours from October to February by mentoring the children in our Kid Way program,” said Trish James of the club. “They have also assisted with activities such as craft room, homework help, action fun and games,” said Katie. Talk things out for better mental health By Murray Green
It helps to talk with someone about how you’re feeling. They can listen to you or help you look at things differently. They might also be able to help
you figure out why you feel like you do. Talking about things can be helpful in itself. Sharing can make you feel less alone and help relieve the stress of coping by yourself. The other person may
be able to offer reassurance, support, information, or help you connect with services, according to Alberta Health Services. When choosing someone to talk to, look for someone you’re comfort-

able with and trust–someone who will respect your privacy, will take you seriously, and will be understanding and accepting. Think of what direction you need and what you want to accomplish. Do you just want to talk, find out where you can get more info, or find services such as counselling? Let them know you have something you want to talk about. You might want to write down what you want to say. Start by explaining that you need some help with a problem. Think of some examples from your life as this may help them to better understand what’s going on. If you’re not sure how the person will react, try hinting at a similar issue. For example, talk about a story you read in the news and see how the person reacts. This will give you an idea of their views and whether they’re likely to be sympathetic. You could also start conversation more generally–talk about how you’ve not been feeling great, rather than saying you’re feeling depressed, anxious or stressed. Be prepared for a range of different reactions. Remember that someone’s first reaction won’t be the same as their reaction when they’ve had time to process what you’ve said. Life is full of ups and downs, and sharing our experiences with the people who care about us is natural and healthy.
Trudeau budget fails Canadians By Kevin Sorenson, MP Battle River-Crowfoot
I share Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer’s view that “never has a Prime Minister spent so much to achieve so little.” Sorenson adds that “never has a Prime Minister so blatantly broken a promise and not only once.” The 2015 Liberal election platform promised three “modest” deficits of $10 billion and under, before returning to balance in 2019. Instead, the Trudeau Liberals are currently on track to add $450 billion to Canada’s national debt over the next 27 years with the budget not projected to be in balance again until 2045. The deficit this fiscal year is $18 billion, which is triple what Justin Trudeau promised. We now have a national debt of $669.6 billion and the interest cost for that debt is rising. This year it will be $26 billion and by 2022, it is projected to be $33 billion which is bigger than the $25 billion spent on National Defence. “If this is not enough of an insult to our men and women in uniform, perhaps the fact that there is absolutely no mention of military spending in this budget is,” said Sorenson. The Battle River-Crowfoot MP also expressed disappointment there was no mention of the agriculture sector. “The only reference to farming in the budget was the $4.3 million over five years to support the reopening of farms at two penitentiaries in Ontario. What does this say about Liberal priorities when inmates come before farmers?” quipped Sorenson. “And, what does it mean for farmers and landowners given the funding allotted in Budget 2018 to continue the implementation of the Species at Risk Act?” This budget also failed to address any uncertainties related to NAFTA, or provide a response to the major tax cuts announced in the United States. U.S. tax reform and the reduction in the corporate rate from 35 per cent to 21 per cent will make Canada less competitive and will hurt our ability to attract and retain jobs and investment in this country. To make matters worse, the Liberals proceeded with their controversial small business tax changes. And while the finance minister did back down somewhat, small businesses will still be squeezed for more than $1 billion by 2020. The Liberals have been asking businesses as well as Canadian families to pay more.

Letters to the Editor Time for a digital detox?
A couple of weekends ago, I accidentally did something wise. (If it’s accidental, does it still count as wise? Absolutely!) From Friday evening until Monday morning, I had no screen time. No email, no Facebook or Linked In or Twitter, no Internet, no TV, no Instagram, no Snap Chat, no text messages. None. It started because late Friday afternoon, I knew I’d be immersed in other things until Sunday, so turned off my desktop computer. A Friday night concert prompted me to turn off my phone. (No, not just set it to vibrate, but actually turn it off.) Saturday, I was immersed in other activities and didn’t think about anything electronic. By Sunday, I just didn’t feel like turning any device back on. I was amazed how freeing it felt. I wouldn’t have said I was addicted to digital information, but I couldn’t help noticing how much more peaceful I felt with zero electronic communication. I had actual undistracted in-person human contact. There was no doubt in my mind–my un-scrambled unpummelled mind–that I could think more clearly. Can a digital detox improve health? After that weekend experience, I was interested to read (online! How ironic is that?) Dr. Christiane Northrup’s article called, “9 Ways a Digital Detox Can Improve Your Health.” She says, “While technology has made our lives easier in many ways, studies show that the constant use of digital technology can also make us less focused, less productive and less social, while also making us feel more stressed. The constant streaming of digital technology can strain your relationships, ruin a good night’s sleep, and has even been linked to health concerns ranging from eye and neck strain to Attention Deficit Disorder to cancer.” She’s a huge fan of the benefits we get from technology but, like a lot of things, digital technology is a good servant and bad master. It can be a huge distraction, a crutch, and even an addiction. How do you know it’s a problem? So, how do you know if it’s a problem for you? Four questions: When you hear the ping of an incoming message, do you drop whatever you’re doing and check your phone? Do you feel anxious when you’re unable to check your social media updates? Do you panic when you lose touch with your smart phone? Have you ever texted while driving? Dr. Northrup says if you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then technology is hijacking your life and it’s probably time for a “digital detox.”
Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Applaud letter
I want to first applaud Andrea Uglem for her letter to the editor this past week and unfortunately say that individuals that occupy positions like Mary Martin are not in touch with what is really happening in our provincial education system. I just wanted someone to know that our province is currently discontinuing a long-standing anti-bullying program called Taking Action on Bully that worked in our area, half in our schools and half in our community. This past year, BRSD chose to remove this program from its schools and the provincial government will not be renewing its funding come the 2108-19 school year. So now where do those parents go when needing to address bullying in school or in the community? Unless something happens locally and provincially, this resource will be lost for all children and their lost parents. Clarence Hastings, Bawlf
School boards
It would prove more helpful if ASBA president Martin focused on improving Alberta’s defunct education system, instead of criticizing Nova Scotia. Her misleading comments need correction. She asserts Alberta is “recognized as one of the best education systems in the world” Facts: Not anymore. In 2006, Alberta ranked number two on PISA’s global math and reading tests and number four in science. Although Alberta’s 2015 science results remained strong enough to serve as “bragging” rights, Alberta’s PISA math scores have fallen 38 points, (to 511 from 549 in 2003; from the number two spot in 2003 and 2006, to 14). Likewise, Alberta’s Grade 4 2015 TIMSS score (482) placed Alberta at 38 globally, compared to Singapore, Hong Kong and Korea at the top, roughly 130 points above Alberta. Alberta’s students who function at Level 2 (PISA’s lowest math level) has more than doubled, from 7.4 per cent to 15.1 per cent. Martin states our school trustees are “marginally compensated.” Trustees get roughly $18,000 to $20,000 for attending monthly meetings (plus extra for sitting on committees). Calgary and Edmonton trustees get $36,000 to $45,000 and Edmonton Public School trustees (Jan 31/17: Global News) voted themselves raises! Martin further claims trustees “recognize the importance of working collaboratively with communities (I assume that should
include parents) government and each other, as partners in education,” Facts: BRSD ignored parent/student demonstrations/protest marches in April 2013, and foisted SLAs, and “no zeros,” on us anyway. Parents as “partners” with “prior” rights (granted in previous legislation) has not translated into 2018 reality. A board chair, when approached, maintained, “I do as I’m told” (... obviously from administration, not from the electorate). Boards’ continued tolerance for bullies and bullying does not meet with parental approval, nor qualify as “collaborating” with parents. Contrary to Martin’s claims that board trustees “are passionate about our children’s education, BRSD ignores local input for improving our children’s education, including the 20,000 Albertans who signed the math petition, thereby casting doubt on Martin’s claim that local boards are passionate and make better (“fully-informed”) decisions. Whether success is defined as social wellbeing (in minister Eggen’s “safe and caring environment”) or as excellent academic achievement, BRSD ensures neither. Bullying continues and BRSD’s mediocre academic achievement declines. Albertans must keep the pressure on, hold administrators accountable for our students’ lack of success. Marion Leithead (a former educator) Bawlf
Three actions
Here are three of nine detox actions she suggests. Define what you will give up, why and for how long. For example, you may decide to give up checking email on your mobile device from Friday after work until first thing Monday morning each week for a month. Or perhaps you decide that you are not going to check work emails from home at night for one week. Notice what happens. Set limits. On average, people check their phones 150 times a day. Set limits for how many times you look at your phone, whether you’re checking email, social media, voice mails, or texts. For example, set your smart phone alarm as a reminder to check notifications once per hour. Then, once you’ve taken a few minutes to check messages and respond to any urgent matters, put your phone down and don’t check it again until your alarm goes again. Create a tech-free zone. Most of us don’t need to take our tablets to the bathroom or bring smart phones into yoga class or a hockey game. Define where you will use your phone and where it’s off limits. Families can do this too. For example, making a no- phones-at-the-dinner-table policy and banning electronics at bedtime are good places to start. Worth trying

WARNING
Throughout the past 6000 years mankind has changed its mindset in regards to the meaning of unchangeable statutes set out by God our Creator. Through the Word of God {Jesus of Nazareth}, we have been given unchangeable truths that are as applicable today as they were in millennia past. God never changes. What happened in the past will happen now and the past is now and God is about to judge Canada. God established a covenant with Noah after the flood. God made a promise that He would not flood the earth again to judge and destroy unrepentant mankind because of the evil that existed on prediluvian earth. The token of His covenant with mankind is the “rainbow”. Noah and his family, consisting of eight people only, survived the flood and were the first to see God’s “rainbow”.

The world’s most exciting sewing machine was offered with an Italian provincial walnut cabinet and featured three types of stitches. It was promoted at $70 off. • Editor, Berdie Fowler, penned a column on Canadian Education Week, March 3 to 9. The theme of the week: “Don’t quit – Choose.”
Seven generations later Abraham was given a warning of God’s judgment and the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham pleaded with God to change His mind if only ten people were found worthy of escaping the judgment. A man named Lot, his wife and two daughters were allowed to leave before God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and all flesh perished as fire and brimstone fell from heaven. Consider Canada today. In 1969 Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau presented an amendment to the criminal code of Canada and parliament approved the legalization of homosexuality and approved the legalization of public paid abortion. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged $81 million to the United Nations population fund which fund abortion and pledged an abortion fund of $650 million for developing countries and any group not in favour of abortion could not get grants to hire summer students. Living human beings, still in the womb, have no legal rights in Canada and their lives can be terminated. Consider the four million Canadians whose lives were terminated in the womb over the past fifty years with all Canadians paying for what we termed a medical procedure. Are we not all guilty and deserving of judgment and justice by God our creator? Vengeance shall be mine says the Lord our God and the spirits of four million aborted Canadians cry out for justice. Jesus is the chosen one of Israel and will rule the earth for one thousand years as a Jew. The King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. The entire world will bow before Jesus. The Jewish King who will rule the world from Jerusalem in the nation of Israel. We as
gentile believers have been grafted into Israel because of the death and resurrection and the shed blood of Jesus the Jewish Messiah. On December the ninth, two thousand and thirteen, at three o’clock AM, I was awakened and the word of the Lord came to me. I wrote this down and I pass it on to you today.
“Know this O man; The Lord God is great. He does not change. The judgment of the past is the judgment of the future. The past is the past as the Bible says but the future is now. Take heed O man and listen to what I say. The Lord God is about to return. His ways are just and His judgment kind to those who love Him. The Jew and Gentile alike. Those with a proud and hardened heart; “Beware”!! For Jesus comes to make things right. Are you with Him or are you against Him? As He judged in the past He will judge right now. Be ready! He is coming! Sodom beware! As He judged in the past He will judge today. You doers of evil, persecute me now because He is about to judge. His return will make things right. Repent and take heed while it is still today for tomorrow will be too late.” AMEN “Now listen O man. Make My name known to all who will listen. “Yeshuah HaMashiach (Jesus the Messiah), Ruach HaKadesh (Holy Spirit),Yahweh the almighty God (God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob), the Great Elohim (triune God). He is all in all. All other gods will fall and Yeshuah HaMashiach (Jesus) will stand tall on Zion’s Hill. He will judge the earth with a rod of iron and with the power of His tongue He will divide evil from good. Are you with Him or are you against Him? Decide today for tomorrow is too late. Amen. God be blessed, His power great, the Peace of Jerusalem is coming soon.” Like the Jew so may the Gentile listen. May we all be saved. God is love. Love extended to all who love Him and His son Jesus. They are one. Love extended by grace to all humanity who believe. And to you who chose to hate God this is the warning. The Bible states that God is jealous and the Lord avenges. The Lord avenges and is furious. The Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries and He reserves wrath for His enemies. Come in today and be saved. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Please read Romans, chapter 10. Presented in love to all. – Vern Peterson

Learn to keep your heart healthy By Murray Green
You can help keep your heart and blood vessels healthy by taking steps toward a healthier lifestyle. Healthy lifestyle habits include healthy eating, getting active and being tobacco free. An assessment of your heart health can help to identify your risk of a heart attack, or stroke and further identify what you can do to reduce your risk. A heart-healthy lifestyle is important for everyone, not just those with existing health problems. If you already have heart or blood vessel problems, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure, a healthy lifestyle can help you manage those problems. If you have children, you can be their healthy role model. If your habits are healthy, your children are more likely to build those habits in their own lives. Reducing or quitting tobacco use is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Tobacco use is still the number one cause of preventable death and disability world-wide and is linked to many illnesses, including heart attack, stroke, diabetes, pulmonary disease and many others. When you quit using tobacco, no matter how old you are, you will decrease your risk of these health problems. Healthy eating helps promote and maintain a healthy weight when combined with active living. Eating more vegetables and fruit offers additional benefit of lowering blood pressure and the risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes, vascular dementia and kidney disease. Increasing your physical activity is good for your heart and blood vessels, as well as the rest of your body. Being active helps lower your risk of health problems and helps you feel good. A Heart Disease Risk Calculator is now available to tell you your heart age and chances of having a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years. If you do not already have a diagnosis of heart disease or stroke, which means you’re already at high risk, and you are over 30 years of age, try this calculator to find out your heart age and what can be done to reduce your risk. This risk assessment looks at your age, blood cholesterol levels, blood pressure and family history to calculate your risk score. Ask your doctor.

You may remember the classic tale of Anastasia, the Russian Grand Duchess born to privilege only to be cast out into a post-revolutionary world. The story is re-created through dance at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday, March 14, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Canada’s Ballet Jörgen performs the magical tale in the 100th anniversary of the story and the 10th anniversary of the production. Ballet Jörgen, renowned for its ability to succinctly tell classical stories in an engaging and dramatic fashion, follows the daughter of the fallen Russian Tsar through the ballrooms of St. Petersburg, to the Russian Revolution and to captivity. A hit with Camrose audiences, Ballet Jörgen’s presents the original routine of the classic story of Anastasia. Canada’s Ballet Jörgen is Canada’s fifth largest ballet company and the nation’s only major ballet company with a repertoire consisting exclusively of original works. It was founded in 1987 by Susan Bodie and husband Bengt Jörgen and is based in Toronto, Ontario. Canada’s Ballet Jörgen gives over 120 performances a year. The company’s annual tours bring ballet performances to over 50,000 people across Canada and northern USA.

Locarno blends central, northern sounds By Murray Green
Locarno is the Latin project of JUNO awardwinning musician Tom Landa. The music is equal parts Mexican and Canadian. Tom was born and raised in Mexico City, and moved to Canada in his teens. Locarno will be playing at the Daysland Palace Theatre on March 21 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Locarno blends great songwriting, a respect for tradition, a searching musical curiosity and virtuoso performance skills. They mix the sounds of Mexican, Cuban and North American popular music. In the mid-’90s, Tom formed the folk roots band The Paperboys, who have been touring worldwide for over 20 years. Tom has always dabbled in Latin music and in 2005, decided to

Local BNI wins first year awards By Lori Larsen
BNI (Business Network International) Rose City (Camrose) garnished the Rookie Chapter of the Year and Rookie President of the year awards, as one of the four chapters chartered last year in Alberta North. The award is a major feat for the BNI Rose City Chapter members, who pride themselves in not only promoting but supporting the, thus far, 25 members within the Camrose Chapter. “This (BNI) is more about relationship building,” said BNI Rose City president Andrey Sokolov. “The weekly commitment (Thursday morning meetings) and tracking of referrals and “thank you for closed business” has really come to fruition as what we are trying to accomplish as a group.” Of the four Chapters launched last year (mostly in larger centres), Camrose came out on top. “It really speaks volumes as to what can be accomplished in Camrose. A lot of people have this mentality of Camrose as a small city of 18,000 where everyone knows everyone. But the volume that we (BNI Rose City) generated in the closed business last year, really speaks to the success of actually referring people, making sure you follow up on it and making sure people are getting good referrals not just leads,” noted Sokolov. Sokolov explained that last year, between April and December, BNI Rose City were the fastest Chapter to break a million dollars in “thank you for closed business” (actual tracked business and sales.) “What we were able to accomplish as a team really shows that BNI does work in smaller communities where there are different challenges.” In explaining the premise behind BNI, he said that the group goes beyond that of just business leads when making referrals. “If someone is looking
for a certain product or service we can refer someone in the Chapter because we have built a relationship with each other. We get to know each other and each other’s reputation as a person and a business. “There is validation in terms of what we do as a chapter, because you have to carry your own weight. There are attendance policies, you have to be here because if you’re not here how can you make or get referrals.” Sokolov added that the group is also adamant about follow-up. “In essence the chapter is selling the person ahead of time and building reputations.” He also explained an added value is the fact that BNI will actually validate the business by making sure the person (business) has proper insurance and licensing. “If they need a license it is ensured they have it before they can actually hold a seat in the chapter. BNI do the background checks.” BNI Rose City Chapter has become 25 members strong and continues to grow. The exclusive membership only allows for one person from each profession or classification to join a Chapter of BNI. However, Sokolov did note that there can be multiple professionals, such as lawyers, representing different classifications of the profession, such as real estate, family, intellectual property or other types of law. On a final note Sokolov said the benefits to members being able to network with other business is invaluable. “I think BNI is going to continue to do really well in Camrose and I am looking forward to the new year.” For more information on the BNI Rose City Chapter, contact any of the members (as seen in photo) or contact Dan Macpherson at dmacpherson@ camroseresortcasino.com.

The automotive section of
A truck on the outside, plenty of power in front By Murray Green
From a distance, the body looks close to being original, maybe a little oversized, but this 1954 F-100 Ford half-ton has a few added ponies under the hood. That is, when it has a hood. “The motor is a Boss 429, built in 1969-70 for the NASCAR races. They had to have the motors in Mustangs. When I started this, I didn’t really want to put a Chevy engine in it. I wanted a Ford engine and something that stood out. My intention was to have fun with this truck and not restore it to original. I bought the engine and then a transmission to adapt it to the engine. “It is an AOD, which was designed for small block Ford engines. I had to do some modifying to make it work by cutting the bell housing out and added another one to it to make it fit this truck,” said Tim Beausoliel from Sedgewick. “This truck came from Vancouver and was a project for someone who never finished competing. Everyone is looking for the 1956, but I wanted a 1954 because it was different. The cabs are different and the ‘56 has a wrap-around windshield. In ‘54, it had its own grille and I really like the grille.” He wanted to build a truck that would be noticed on the road. “For the chassis, I put a Mustang front clip underneath it and a coil system all of the way around it. It features a nine-inch floor and 370 gears with a fourlink suspension in the back half, which is not original to the truck.” The Ford F-Series was redesigned by Ford for 1953 with a more integrated look. The 1954 pickups also obtained their widely familiar names such as the F-1 which became the F-100, the F-2 and F-3 which became the F-250 and the F-4 which became the one-ton F-350. “I’ve got overdrive for going down the highway. It has a Detroit 671 blower, actually an old diesel blower converted to gas and a fuelinjected system.” Optional interior amenities were new, including a dome light, lighter, arm rests, sun visors and a radio. On March 13, 1953, the FordO-Matic automatic transmis-

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Tim Beausoliel of Sedgewick combined the attractive look of his 1954 Ford truck with a Mustang racing engine to give his prize vehicle both looks and muscle.
sion became an option. Most of the options continued in 1954. “I lowered the cab three inches, chopped and I took the door handles off. It’s all pop, clean all of the way around.” Tim faced a few challenges putting a racing engine into a truck. “The motor and blower was hitting the back of the firewall, but I did some jockeying with the engine and now it is ahead enough that I can actually get rid of the blower to create better sightlines when driving.” In 1953-54, the new 239 CID overhead valve Y-block V8 was introduced, dubbed Power King. The six-cylinder engine’s displacement was also increased from 215 to 223 CID and power steering was introduced as an option. In 1954, the 239 Y-block was replaced with the 272 and 312. Tim didn’t want to waste time with a small block. “This is for my own use. I don’t intend to do any racing, but sure I like to take it down
an eighth-mile track once in a while to see what she has. It is more for decoration and fun.” Tim kept adding to his dream truck. “About a year ago, I had the truck all finished and then decided to set up the blower. I decided I wanted to step it up a little. I put the blower on it instead of putting a super charger on it. I wanted something massive and it looks mean.” Making changes means added challenges. “There are always challenges to building a truck like this. You can see the firewall has been pushed back because of the size of the engine. I knew that before I stuck the engine in, so I was prepared for it. I had some cab-fitting problems because when the cab was lowered by the people who had it before me, it wasn’t put on straight. So one side of the door was sticking out and the other side was tight. When I started measuring, I found out it wasn’t welded quite right. We had to re-adjust it. I’m still working a few bugs out of it.”
He put an aluminum floor in the back because at the time he couldn’t afford the extra cost of wood. “I had the aluminum so I went ahead with it. I’ve got more than $100,000 into already. I did 90 per cent of it at home.”
He tries to hit the road in the summer to a few car shows. “I’ve been to shows in Three Hills, Edmonton, Round Hill, Bittern Lake and some of the other shows around here.”

Kidney Foundation saves lives through living donors By Murray Green
The City of Camrose Mayor Mayer proclaimed March 8 as World Kidney Day. The Kidney Foundation of Canada are also on a door-to-door fundraising campaign. Local kidney donor Elaine Nixon shared her story and journey to help others. “Becoming an organ donor was an easy and natural choice for me. I’ve been a blood donor since my 20s. Being O-negative, I’m a universal donor. I’ve been involved in the plasmapheresis program where they only take the white cells and I got to keep the red stuff. That meant I was available on demand to bank blood for planned surgeries for infants or high risk surgeries,” explained Elaine. Plasmapheresis is a process that filters the blood and removes harmful antibodies. It is a procedure done similarly to dialysis, however, it specifically removes antibodies from the plasma portion of the blood. “That’s where I started being a donor. I signed the back of my health card as a willing donor in the event of death and I also have my driver’s license marked now. It is easy to become an organ donor. I’ve spoken to my family about that choice and it is stipulated on my personal directive. If I’m not using the organs anymore, someone
else can make use of those organs,” expressed Elaine. “However, I was under educated about becoming a living donor. I heard of living kidney donors, but was unaware of the success rate and that you could help someone other than a blood relative. I didn’t have anyone in my family with a direct need,” she shared. Elaine then looked around at her friends and acquaintances. “When my intended recipient (someone from Camrose) became in need of a kidney approximately three years ago, I started asking some of those questions. I discovered that perhaps I could be his donor despite not being related. I knew my universal blood status would help in the process and offered to be screened as a possible donor. “Unfortunately after eight months of medical tests, it proved on the final blood test where they mix the blood of the donor and recipient together, that we had a reaction. That is not what you want to hear. We were incompatible at the tissue level with signs of increased rejection in that test. As disappointing as this was, I was approved as a fit donor. I was told of the opportunity to find a donor match.” She was a good match for someone in Toronto and the Camrose resident was
matched to someone outside of the local area as well. “These matches may be a direct match where my intended donor is matched with someone who was intended to match them. But in our case, it involved several pairs in no order to complete the circle. We were originally matched last February 2017 and unfortunately our chain fell apart immediately. They ran it through a computer in hopes to repair the chain,” continued Elaine. “We were able to do that with a different combination of recipient pairs. We were quite excited. But it came back with the chain failed.” The living donor office was very compassionate in telling her the disappointing news. “We were so hopeful that we were going to have a successful match. We were matched again in June and by July it was confirmed that all of the pairs in the new chain were compatible. I didn’t have confirmation until late September that our surgeries wouldn’t occur until the end of November. Image the logistics of every transplant. The chain entails numerous transplant centres, two ORs and two surgical teams for each donor/ recipient pair. All this needs to be done simultaneously.” The more pairs involved, the more complex the organization needed to be. “My recipient was in Toronto and with me being
Elaine Nixon
the healthy one, I got to travel. Likewise, a donor got to travel to Edmonton to help my original intended recipient. Finally, two years after my first offer to be a donor, we were able to complete this journey, not without a couple more hurdles though,” added Elaine. “My recipient sent me an anonymous note through the donor office in a one time opportunity about two weeks after the surgery. It read ‘It is wonderful what you have done for me and my family. It is absolutely incredible. This will allow me to keep living a healthy life for another 30 plus years. My recovery went well and I assume yours did as well. The surgeon said your kidney was pristine,
thanks again.’ I pray that it continues to serve them very well for many years.” Elaine’s first intended recipient is also doing well. “He is here, Don Glidden. I feel humbled that people say I have done a courageous thing. I don’t feel I have done anything extraordinary. I wanted to do it for Don and his family. In the end, together, we helped a number of others receive transplants. Please be willing to sign your donor card, talk to your family and be willing to support the kidney foundation in any way you are able.” Erhard Pinno is seeking volunteers to help with the campaign. Call him at 780672-1629.

Ruth Oine Hagen April 30, 1921 ~ February 25, 2018 Ruth Oine Hagen (nee McFarlane) went to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at the age of 96 years after a period of declining health. She was born on April 30, 1921 to Jim and Carrie McFarlane on the family farm near Gronlid, Saskatchewan. Ruth was the second child and only girl of the family, having three brothers, Eugene, Leonard, and Glenn. As a child, she was expected to help with farm chores and housework. She became very proficient at sewing and gardening, skills which she carried throughout her life. At the age of thirteen, she was confirmed in the Lutheran Church. She attended SLBI (or the future LCBI) in Outlook. After graduation and further secretarial training in Saskatoon, she returned to SLBI and became the school secretary, with full responsibility for running the “Sunday School by Mail” program. While at Outlook, she met the love of her life, Arnold Hagen. They were married on August 21, 1946 and moved to Saskatoon where Arnold attended seminary. While in Saskatoon, Ruby, Daniel, and David were added to the family. Upon Arnold’s graduation, they moved to Prince Albert where Joy was born. In 1952, they moved to Vancouver to pastor at First Lutheran Church in Vancouver. During their ten year stay in Vancouver, Crystal and Philip joined the family which made for a very busy household. After Arnold’s call to CLBI in 1962, the family moved to Camrose where they have resided up to the present. In order to help with finances, Ruth worked at Woolworths, Bethany and finally Camrose Color Center. The skills acquired while living on the farm proved useful while managing the family, an outside job and participating at CLBI. Upon Arnold’s retirement, they traveled to many countries and destinations, often in the line of ministry. Ruth was a devoted Christian wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, but the most important part of her life was her relationship with Jesus. She is remembered for being a prayer warrior. Arnold and Ruth were married for 68 years until Arnold’s passing in 2014. She leaves behind her six children Ruby and Dennis Knudtson, Daniel and Audrey Hagen, David and Sheri Hagen, Joy and Orville Evenson, Crystal and Doug MacKay, and Philip and June Hagen; twenty-one grandchildren with their spouses; and forty great-grandchildren. Predeceasing her were her husband Arnold; her parents Jim and Carrie McFarlane; brother Leonard McFarlane; and in-laws Bernice McFarlane, Irene Hagen, Rose and Ken Arnstead, Lloyd and Ida Hagen, Norman Salte and Orville Pederson. Ruth’s last years were spent at Bethany Meadows Care Home where the staff, home care and Doctors Hilderman and Slabbert took such great care of her. Crystal MacKay spent numerous hours feeding, reading, talking and praying with and attending to our mother. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2018 from Messiah Lutheran Church with Rev. Rob Lewis officiating. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute (CLBI) or to the World Mission Prayer League (www.wmplcanada.org). The family would like to thank Dr. Hilderman, Dr. Slabbert, Homecare nurse Janet Mcgeer as well as the staff at Bethany Meadows for the wonderful care their mother received. Opposing views leads to school closure action By Murray Green
Cornerstone Christian Academy Society (CCA) and the Battle River School Division (BRSD) are at a crossroads. Discussions regarding the future of Cornerstone Christian Academy, located in Kingman, stalled when the CCA asked for a judicial review. BRSD countered by insisting on not talking to the CCA because of advice they received from their lawyer. The dispute started when CCA asked for a change in the school vision to reflect the Bible’s view that same sex relationships shouldn’t be welcomed or encouraged. BRSD is following Alberta Education’s view that all people are treated equal regardless of race, religious beliefs and sexual orientation. The two sides hashed out their differences and the issue was resolved, but BRSD declared a breach of communication when draft documents were leaked. “A lot of stuff got out of the room and it was very problematic for the board. There was a lot of stuff thrown around, people were targeted and we felt that to proceed, we needed a communication protocol. We need that so we don’t have to go through that again. It wasn’t pretty,” said BRSD vice chair Norm Erickson. At a special meeting of the Battle River School Division board held on June 29 last year, trustees voted in favour of bringing their current relationship with the Cornerstone Christian Academy Society to an end. When a communications protocol document wasn’t achieved by both parties, the BRSD filed a year in advance notice of motion to close the CCA. Part of the school closure mandate is to hold a public meeting and that was held on Feb. 27 in Kingman. “We will consider all the input and implications, and make a final decision about how to proceed on April 26. The first, and most important of those, is to acknowledge that many of you are feeling that your personal beliefs and rights are being challenged. BRSD strongly supports your right to believe what you wish to believe. We also strongly support your individual right to teach your children what you wish your children to believe,” said BRSD board chair Kendall Severson. “But, the rules for a school authority are not the same as they are for you as an individual, or as a parent. Our role is different.” The CCA, along with a number of parents, initiated a judicial review, based
on the premise that the School Division’s motion last June was to terminate the agreement with the CCA and violates Christian rights. “We’ve been asked why this court action is keeping us from working with or meeting with the Society. First, we do work with the Society, every single school day. But the specific issues we need to resolve are much tied to the legal challenge and we do not feel able to discuss those while there is a court process underway,” added Severson. The BRSD believes strongly that a communications protocol needs to be added to the Master Agreement with the CCA Society. The protocol would govern the actions of both groups, by defining how they work together, how they speak about each other’s organizations in public, how to problem solve, what they share with others and when it’s not to appropriate to share. “Right now nothing in the agreement addresses this. And, when there are no rules, nothing is outside the rules. We believe these things need to be clearly spelled out. Until such a protocol is in place, we are very reluctant to talk about anything else with the CCA Society, so that would be the first order of business if our two organizations were to sit down at the table together again,” continued Severson. Representatives of the two groups met last fall on Sept. 11, and two other times. It was agreed that discussions went well, with members of both parties providing ideas and suggestions for moving forward together in a positive way. The meeting ended
with a sense that both groups had gained additional understanding of the other’s concerns and needs. Then it turned sour. All trustees expressed regret that the educational partnership had reached the point of needing to be severed. At the same time, they expressed their genuine hope this action will make it possible to start fresh in developing a new working relationship. “You speak of human rights, but what about constitutional rights, the freedom to speak, explain how it is morally right or beneficial to students and the wider community to ignore those freedoms and that also goes for the Scripture. CCA was given a directive they could no longer use that Scripture as a purpose statement, or read it out loud in the school,” said Kelly Innocent. “What is higher: my constitutional rights or the education act? The courts are not the only way to solve this. If you meet the requests or concerns of the injunction, then there is no injunction. Will you address those concerns laid out in the injunction?” The Board was silent. “We can’t talk about the injunction,” said vice chair Erickson. A BRSD stipulation included that the committee remain in place to work towards establishing a new agreement if the Cornerstone Society is willing to work together to develop an agreement that incorporates the content of the draft addendum related to working relationships and communication protocols. “Why, and I find this immature, do we have to go through the school closure process over something like a communication issue? I
find it something totally different. It’s like bullying,” said Jillian Tabler. “We have to work together and that was not reciprocated. We’ve given a year’s notice that we have to work together. All that came to a halt on Dec. 26 when we received the judicial review,” said BRSD chair Severson. Cornerstone Christian Academy is an alternative school offered by the BRSD public school division. As an alternative program within the public school division, Cornerstone is a public school subject to the same rules and regulations as every other school and program within the division, such as the Alberta School Act and Alberta Human Rights Legislation. While the organizations were engaged in conversation, they felt it would be best not to make additional comments to the media. “I want a clarification on what problems the board has with us. We had a matter of three days to look at the draft. We submitted some concerns, but never got the chance to see what that would look like. We met three times to work on the communications protocol, so I think it is unfair to say we were not willing to work on the communications protocol,” said John Kauffman, vice chair of the CCA Society. “We still want to meet and work on the communications protocol. If we get beyond that, the judicial review is no longer an issue. So my question is what is it about the judicial review that is such a concern that it needs to be held out as the bat being swung for the reason we can’t get together?” Severson responded that they want all children
to feel safe in all schools, regardless of race, religion and sexual orientation. “We thought that by giving a termination notice, it would open the lines of communication. We can’t discuss what is in the review because it has been turned over to the courts.” Kauffman pointed out that the agreement is put in place, then the judicial review doesn’t have to go to the courts. “The pattern is that you sit in the board room and agree with us in principle, and then you go outside of the board room and your actions are opposite or not in conjunction with what was agreed upon in that room. As a parent and a CCA board member, it is hard for me to put my trust in the BRSD board.” Lawyers, or legal advice on both sides, are preventing further communications. “If we can get together and figure this out, then not a dollar will be spent in court,” said Kauffman. “We are willing to sit down, with legal presence on both sides, to work on the communications protocol if that helps in any shape or form.” Founded in 1986, and operating since 2009 as an alternative program within the Battle River School Division, CCA has been providing parents with choice in education for over 30 years. The CCA board remains committed to working together collaboratively with BRSD, but is also committed to upholding the constitutional rights of parents to send their children to a religious school that is truly religious in character.

THANK YOU ROY LANGILLE AND FAMILY – thank everyone who came out to celebrate his 90th birthday. 125+ friends and family, and birthday wishes from afar, made this celebration a very memorable one. A HEARTFELT THANK YOU – to all who attended and took part in the service for Terry with such support for our family. Thank you to Rev. Richard Schultz for the wonderful message, to Darren Lockhart for the organ music, to Don and Carol Schmidt for their hymn and for their kindness at filling in at the last minute, when family members were unable to attend because of the weather. Thank you to the honourary pallbearers. Special thanks for the heartfelt tribute to Terry, all the floral tributes, memorials in his name, cards and phone calls. Thank you for all the many prayers. They all helped us through this difficult time! Thank you to the ladies of First Baptist Church, Kingman, and the Brausen family for taking care of the lunch at the hall, and also to the cleap-up crew. Thanks again. – The Scott family

Snowed In Comedy leaves you laughing By Murray Green
The Snowed In Comedy Tour is returning to Camrose at the Bailey Theatre on Saturday, March 10 at 8 p.m. The Tour started 10 years ago with nine shows and has since grown to 48 cities with 55 performances, including four straight nights in Whistler, BC. The 2017 tour received numerous standing ovations and was the most successful to date. It has now grown to become one of the largest comedy tours in Canada. Four international comedians come together to create one amazing show with each bringing a unique and hilarious take providing something for everyone. The show features four of the best comedians Canada has to offer. Just for Laughs winner, Dan Quinn, the wild man MC Craig Campbell, the $25,000 Great Canadian Laugh Off winner, Paul Myrehaug, as well as fivetime Canadian Comedian of the Year nominee, Pete Zedlacher. Damonde Tschritter, winner of the Seattle Comedy Competition, will replace Campbell in some locations. Paul Myrehaug, of Camrose, has been on an international stand-up circuit. He is now touring with his unique brand of comedy to audiences in 37 countries around the globe. Television appearances on ITV in the United Kingdom and performing at several major European festivals like Vodaphone Comedy Carnival–Galway Ireland, International Comedy Festival–Rotterdam Netherlands, Altitude Comedy Festival–Mayrhofen Austria and Bestival on the Isle of Wight, make Paul a dynamic entertainer with a warped, worldly view. He’s also no slouch at home. His comedy is currently airing on Just For Laughs, CBC’s Halifax Comedy Festival, The Comedy Network’s Comedy Now and he’s a regular with numerous appearances on the hit CBC Radio show The Debaters. Paul is among the finest comedians Canada has produced as evidenced by winning the $25,000 grand prize in the 2006 Comedy Network’s Great Canadian Laugh Off, and his numerous trips overseas to entertain the allied Armed Forces in Kuwait, Italy, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. The tour features very different, yet all incredibly talented, performers with numerous television and festival credits.
