On Friday, March 16, University of Alberta Augustana Campus is celebrating ten years of Indigenous student services by hosting a Round Dance in the gymnasium at Augustana. The Round Dance is a dance of friendship, where everyone celebrates together. Following Nehiyaw (Plains Cree) tradition, the evening will begin with a pipe ceremony at 5:00 p.m., a feast at 6:00 p.m. and the Round Dance itself which starts at 7:00 p.m. This community celebration is open to everyone and is free to attend. Don’t leave too early or you’ll miss the giveaway, where everyone in attendance is thanked for coming through the gifting of small, useful items – this will happen near midnight!

Okay, I admit it. What with one thing and another, I simply couldn’t think of something to write about this week. More accurately, I had so many things I was thinking about, bopping around in my mind and bumping into one another, that I couldn’t settle on just one of them. So, as what I hope will feel like a gift to you, here are some things that other people have written – a dozen of my favourite quotes. We owe a huge thank you to Boden Sand and Gravel for the extensive grading and graveling to repair the road two miles of road north of Edberg. I can remember when a large gravel company from Edmonton was running 85 trucks from Edberg to Edmonton with each truck making four runs a day over this road. This really pounded out the road and they were suppose to help maintain the road. Now Boden Sand and Gravel are held responsible for the maintenance of this road with an average of 20 truck loads per day during the busy season. They did a good job in restoring the road. All of us know or have known a school teacher. Most of us know they have a tough job. Laid at their feet are the responsibilities of not only educating children but trying to instill in them some moral fibre as defined by our society, some accepted standards of behavior, a semblance of common decency. They are educators and psychologists and disciplinarians and counsellors. They work with children who come from a wide range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. In the face of these exceptional challenges, they do their best. The job asks of them to be kind-hearted, empathetic, patient, knowledgeable and doing what’s best for all those who come through the doors of their schools. School teachers are also
easy targets. They are often the first to be blamed, first to be held accountable and first to be questioned and criticized when the behaviour of a student goes awry. They are often expected to fix problems that began far before they were tasked with the job of educating a youngster, a youngster whose formative years are the root of the behaviour that manifests itself in the classroom. As members of our society, I believe all of us need to take responsibility in upholding the values we want to see in our young people. It’s very easy to blame others. It’s easy to aim our criticism, often unfounded, at what is perceived to be a faceless institution. But within that faceless institution are people, friends, neighbours, members of our community, who are doing their best and who believe in the importance of what they are doing. Now, I am definitely biased, we all have our biases, don’t we? I am married to a school teacher and the company I represent does business with institutional organizations in this region. But that doesn’t preclude me from making one simple statement: we’re all in this together. If we could share ideas without pointing fingers, we all would be better off. Mike Ploner, Camrose

The Camrose Police Service is asking for the public’s help in identifying a male suspect involved in a sexual assault case. In the early morning hours on Feb. 17, a female reported that she was sexually assaulted by a male inside a downtown licensed establishment in Camrose. The suspect is believed to be a stranger to the victim and is described as Caucasian in his 20s, approximately 5’11” with an average build, short light-coloured hair and a short, groomed beard. The suspect was also described as wearing a red and black checkered flannel coat with a grey hoodie sticking out at the back, blue jeans with holes in the legs and tan-coloured work boots. Police are asking anyone who recognizes this man or has any information about this incident to contact the Camrose Police Service at 780-672-4444.

Notice of Application Confined Feeding Operation
Les Isaac has filed application for amendment RA17035A with the Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) regarding a confined feeding operation (CFO) on SW 32-44-20 W4M in Camrose County of Alberta. The application is to remove condition #5 of Approval RA17035. Condition #5 states: “The permit holder shall depopulate all the feedlot pens and remove all manure (except the bedding pack) from those pens, by March 31 of each year. The permit holder shall not re-populate any of the feedlot pens until the following September of each year at the earliest.” The amendment application states that condition #5 is no longer required because the permit holder has built a runoff control catch basin that satisfies the requirement for surface water protection. The application does not request a change to the permitted number of beef feeders at the CFO.

Any person who is directly affected by the application may submit a statement of concern to the NRCB. The statement of concern must be received by the NRCB on or before April 12, 2018. RCMP receives funding to address rural crime By Murray Green
Help is on the way. More RCMP members will be added to rural areas across the province in the future. The Government of Alberta announced an investment of $8 million that will enable Alberta RCMP to place more employees where they can make the most impact: on the streets and in communities across the province. This investment demonstrates the province’s confidence in the Alberta RCMP’s systematic and evidence-led Crime Reduction Strategy – a collaborative policing approach designed to address the root causes of crime and breaking the cycle of criminal activity in a community. In partnership with the province, Alberta RCMP has developed an action plan that will enable the force to address rural crime by adding 39 new officer positions and 40 civilian employees in areas that will ultimately lead to more RCMP officers on the road. The investment represents additional support for Crime Reduction Units in communities that need it the most, six new intelligence-focused officers, four additional crime analysts and more civilian staff to cut down on paperwork so that officers can focus on investigations, patrols, and engaging with their communities. “Rural Crime Reduction Units are designed to act fast to target repeat offenders who commit the vast majority of crimes in an area,” said Deputy Commissioner Todd Shean. “I can assure you, if you are committing crime in Alberta, we will identify you and we will stop you.” More officers will help. “Rural police officers are part of their communities,” said Kathleen Ganley, Minister of Justice and Solicitor General. “They do difficult and extremely important work every day. I want to thank the RCMP for the work they do to protect Albertans. I’m confident this plan will give our rural police officers more tools in their toolbox to fight crime.” The RCMP is proud to be the rural police force of Alberta. Each RCMP district is equipped with a Crime Reduction Team dedicated to targeting prolific offenders, particularly in the areas of break and enters, vehicle thefts and thefts of other property. District Crime Reduction Teams have arrested 219 people, have laid 469 Criminal and Drug charges and have arrested 170 wanted persons. The Alberta RCMP Traffic Units (RTU), in addition to promoting highway safety through enforcement activities, are also targeting traveling criminals. In January 2018 alone, the RTU Traffic Units made nine major seizures of drugs and contraband, totalling in excess of $1.3 million. This resulted in 14 arrests and 19 new Criminal charges being laid.

This column was written by both Geraint Osborne (sociology) and Tim Parker (psychology) professors. While the exact date is in question, it is certain that the Canadian government will legalize cannabis in the summer or fall of 2018. Polls suggest that the majority of Canadians support this initiative, although some remain adamantly opposed. It is important to remember that legalization is primarily about regulation. Prohibition has been unsuccessful. Governments and people have grown weary with the failed, and dangerous war on drugs approach. Legalization will allow for the better control of cannabis, the most widely used illicit substance. Regulation is central to a harm reduction approach to drug use as it allows for the production and sale of a safer product, takes the product out of the hands of organized crime, reduces police corruption, and channels tax money into health and education initiatives which are far more effective in reducing the harms associated with drug misuse. As we learned from alcohol prohibition, where there is a demand there will be a supply. If we are going to reduce the harms associated with cannabis misuse, we are far better off addressing the demand side of the equation while we carefully control the supply side. We have made tremendous gains in combating tobacco smoking this way, not to mention the harms associated with alcohol misuse, such as drinking and driving. A legalized environment will also allow for the further study of cannabis, especially its effects on the brain and its consequences for mental health. In addition to a general moral attitude that taking drugs should be discouraged, some cite the effect that cannabis has on our cognitive abilities as reasons for opposing its legalization. In particular, there is fear based on the findings that cannabis impairs driving and other tasks requiring coordination. It is true that cannabis does have this effect, and one of the issues arising from this is that, at present, there is no incontrovertible way to detect the presence of cannabis and establish the dose taken in impaired drivers. However, I think we can be confident that now that such a test will be very lucrative, one or more will soon be developed. Opposition also arises because of the common conception that marijuana produces severe brain damage, a conception initially fostered by the antidrug efforts in the 1940s in the USA, almost comically manifested in the famous film Reefer Madness. Much research has been done based on these dramatic but largely unsupported initial claims about the danger of cannabis. While the results are somewhat contradictory, there is no question that the amount of brain damage that has been reported is dwarfed by the catastrophic level of cell loss in the brain that occurs as a result of regular consumption of alcohol. Indeed, as demonstrated by many studies, such as those by neuropsychopharmacologist David Nutt and his colleagues, while cannabis is not benign, it is less harmful to individuals and society than tobacco and alcohol. If harm alone was reason enough to criminalize a substance, then these would definitely have to be banned. But we don’t because we know that doing so would lead to far worse problems. It’s far better to control these substances and minimize their harms through other mechanisms. At the end of the day, drug misuse is a health and education problem, not a crime problem. Join Augustana professors Geraint Osborne (Sociology) and Tim Parker (Psychology) alongside Deena Hinshaw, a medical officer of health and Acting Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health, and Michelle Eikerman, an Alberta Health Services Addictions counsellor, for a panel presentation on the implications of cannabis legalization, the latest research on the effects of cannabis on the brain, and how these findings should inform our overall process of legalizing cannabis and regulating its strength and availability. Kodiaks tame horses in first playoff series By Murray Green
The Camrose Kodiaks were fired up in the first game of the Alberta Junior Hockey League playoffs on March 8. Local player Kyler Kupka scored twice to lead the Kodiaks to a 5-1 victory over the Calgary Mustangs. Camrose were ahead 2-0 after 20 minutes with Carson Welke netting a shorthanded marker and Kupka grabbing his first tally. The Mustangs fought back with a power play goal, but Camrose regained a two-goal lead late in the period from Ryan Hartman. Nic Correale and Kupka added power play markers in the third frame. Brock Bremer finished the night with three assists. Goalie Luke Lush stopped 27 of the 28
shots he faced. Meanwhile, Camrose fired 48 shots at the Mustangs’ cage. Camrose also won 6-3 and 4-3 in overtime to sweep the series. The Kodiaks wrapped up the regular season with a 4-1 loss to the top team in the AJHL on March 3. The Okotoks Oilers won 4-1 by scoring the first four goals of the game. Kyler Kupka replied for the Kodiaks. Netminder Lush stopped 31 of 35 shots. Camrose had 28 shots on the Oilers’ net. This is a full-time permanent position in the Utilities section of the Public Works Department. Numbers not enough to offer Christian Logos By Murray Green
It came down to numbers, or a lack of them, to offer Logos Christian education in Camrose and Tofield next year. Requests came from parents to have Christian programming available in both Camrose and Tofield under the Battle River School Division. BRSD
has been exploring the possibility of offering a Logos Christian Program in those communities. In Camrose, an information night was held last spring, which generated enough interest for the school division to go further in the planning process. This winter, Camrose parents were
invited to register for the program, with a sign-up deadline of Feb. 28. In Tofield, an information night took place this January, with parents asked to express their interest in the program by mid-February. A number of intent forms and registration forms were submitted in
each community, but in the end, the responses indicate there are simply not enough families expressing interest to make up a viable program. As a result, Battle River School Division will not be proceeding further with discussions about a Logos Christian Program

Augustana Vikings knocked out the SAIT Trojans in two straight games, 3-0 and 5-2, to advance to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference semifinals against the NAIT Ooks. The Vikings shut out SAIT 3-0 on the strength of goaltending from Curtis Skip. He made all 40 saves he needed to as he bent, but didn’t break under the pressure in Calgary. Cody Young, Adam Osczevski and Dillan McCombie all scored single tallies, one in each period of play. The offence took over in the second outing as Augustana scored the last three goals in the 5-2 contest to take control and win the series in two games. Talk things out for better mental health By Murray Green
It helps to talk with someone about how you’re feeling. They can listen to you or help you look at things differently. They might also be able to help you figure out why you feel like you do. Talking about things can be helpful in itself. Sharing can make you feel less alone and help relieve the stress of coping by yourself. The other person may be able to offer
reassurance, support, information, or help you connect with services, according to Alberta Health Services. When choosing someone to talk to, look for someone you’re comfortable with and trust–someone who will respect your privacy, will take you seriously, and will be understanding and accepting. Think of what direction you need and what you want to accomplish. Do you just
want to talk, find out where you can get more info, or find services such as counselling? Let them know you have something you want to talk about. You might want to write down what you want to say. Start by explaining that you need some help with a problem. Think of some examples from your life as this may help them to better understand what’s going on.
If you’re not sure how the person will react, try hinting at a similar issue. For example, talk about a story you read in the news and see how the person reacts. This will give you an idea of their views and whether they’re likely to be sympathetic. You could also start conversation more generally–talk about how you’ve not been feeling great, rather than say-
ing you’re feeling depressed, anxious or stressed. Be prepared for a range of different reactions. Remember that someone’s first reaction won’t be the same as their reaction when they’ve had time to process what you’ve said. Life is full of ups and downs, and sharing our experiences with the people who care about us is natural and healthy.

One additional item which caught the eye of CPS investigators and their RCMP counterparts, when searching the residence and property of suspect Swanson, was the 1938 Ford truck which was stolen from behind the north-side Camrose residence back in late October. (The abandoned and empty trailer was found several days after the theft on a dirt back road approximately six kilometers away from the rural residence of the suspect charged with this string of drug offences and thefts.) It remains unknown if this suspect is responsible for the actual theft of this vehicle and the trailer on which it was secured. Could he have been the driver of the vehicle of interest which appeared on the video surveillance tape prior to the theft? And who made the call to the truck owner several weeks after the theft offering to return it for a fee? “It bears repeating that the truck captured on video may have had absolutely nothing to do with this case," suggests Camrose Police Service Detective Shawn Lofgren. “It’s also possible that someone else participated in this or other thefts of the goods found on the suspect's property. Will this ongoing investigation lead to additional arrests? At this point, we just don’t know.” CPS Const. Kelly Bauer provided a wrap-up to this news conference with a promising piece of advice: “We need to have the community involved by being alert, always. The Eyes on Camrose initiative which is now taking hold in the community allows every citizen to play an important role in keeping Camrose a safe place to live. The reality is that police cannot be everywhere, all the time, and we appreciate the community’s assistance in preventing and helping solve crime with information that they are able to provide. It is the eyes and ears of individuals that may provide the important piece of a puzzle that solves a crime.” Note: All individuals charged with a crime must be assumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Camrose Friends of STARS reaches milestone By Lori Larsen
Supporting the lifesaving efforts of STARS has been a 25-year partnership for Camrose Friends of STARS and recently hit a donation milestone of $4 million! On Feb. 24, STARS celebrated Camrose Friends of STARS in an event held at the STARS Edmonton base at the Edmonton International Airport, with the unveiling of a prestigious logo. Present at the event was a Camrose Friends of STARS representative, STARS personnel and air medical crew and patient Marcus Hirschfield. On Feb. 14, 2013, Hirschfield, a constable with the RCMP, was on his way to investigate a motor vehicle accident travelling north of Highway 627, when his police vehicle was struck by an oncoming pickup truck that lost control and slid directly into his path. The driver of the pickup truck was able to get safely out of his vehicle, but the passenger had been ejected. W hen Con st. Hirschfield radioed for help, he indicated he thought his own leg was broken, but out of concern for the others involved, advised that the passenger of the pickup truck was not okay. As it turned out, the passenger was taken by ground ambulance to hospital with a broken leg, however Const. Hirschfield sustained a badly shattered femur causing concerns of damage to the femoral artery which can be fatal if not treated immediately. STARS was put into the air and subsequently into action, airlifting Const. Hirschfield to hospital where he underwent surgery. Rehabilitation followed and eventually he made a full recovery. In Hirschfield’s own words, STARS was there for him when he needed them. God forbid anyone else ever needs them, but they’ll be there for them as well. Hirschfield’s story is one more example of the impact donations to STARS has on lives in Alberta.

Twain’s play comes back to life

Infinite Imagination Travelling Theatre will be bringing their comedy and fun routines back to the Bailey Theatre for five dates. They will be featuring the work of Mark Twain in Is He Dead? A Satirical Comedy In Three Acts playing March 15, 16, 17, 23 and 24. The first show begins at 8 p.m. The rest of the performances are a dinner theatre-style with dinner at 6:30 and the show at 8 p.m. Twain was fascinated by the theatre and made many attempts at playwriting to help pay his bills in his later years, many of which were mediocre. His best, Is He Dead?, was written by Twain in 1898 after he had emerged from one of the most serious bouts of depression in his life. For several years, Twain’s works have been the object of study by scholars and authors, but it was not until the contemporary American playwright David Ives adapted Is He Dead? for the modern stage that this play appeared on Broadway. Ives’ additions to Twain’s original script contributed to the success of this comically rich situation that is in all Twain’s

The Camrose and Area Children’s Choirs have had to postpone their planned trip to Ottawa for Canada Day 2018. Our singers were fundraising and preparing to attend a choral festival involving choirs from all across Canada, from June 28 to July 2 of this year. Sadly, a series of events have caused the festival to cancel their event this year. In 2017, this festival saw over 600 participants, all excited to attend the
150th anniversary celebrations in our nation’s capital. This meant numbers were already lower for 2018, but then a few choirs were unable to fulfill their commitment, there was a scheduling issue with the guest conductor and suddenly the festival was not able to run. The offer has been extended to our choirs to come next year, and the majority of our singers have been happy to carry on with a bit more time for fundraising and orga-

nizing. We may also end up with a few more singers who can make Canada Day 2019 work for them. New singers are welcome. We are winding down our 2017-18 season right now, but will start up again in the fall and plan to bring as many singers with us as are interested. Dancers from both local dance groups are working together. “It shows how they do things and it gives a chance to dance with others and be closer to them,” said Victoria. “It could show us things that we might consider doing and it can help us progress as well because we are a small community,” continued Evyann. “It’s a great opportunity because we don’t get to do it very often. It just shows us a lot,” said Baylie. Ballet Jörgen will be running classes for all of the studios to pass on their knowledge to all of the local dancers, not just those in the show. Receiving instruction from professional dancers on the road means a lot to the girls. “We get to see the professionals and how they dance and advise on doing shows,” said Victoria. “They are very seasoned from touring all over the world for years, so they have learned a lot and they offer that to us,” said Evyann.

The classic tale of Anastasia means a little more to nine local dancers due to the fact they will be participating in the show. Anastasia was the Russian Grand Duchess born to privilege only to be cast out into a post-revolutionary world. The story is re-created through dance at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday, March 14, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Canada’s Ballet Jörgen performs the magical tale with assistance from Camrose Academy of Dance and Camrose Ballet members. Local dancers Evyann Graham, Jill Shapka, Erin Shapka, Victoria Watmoug, Kennedy Kenzie, Hershita Sainbhee, Tori Hagstrom, Lyla Young, Baylie Brown and Charlotte Thiessen will join professional dancers in telling the story. “It’s a good opportunity for me because it gives recognition to both the studio and myself,” said Victoria, 15, who has been in dance for eight years. “It is a great learning experience for all of us and teaches us about how professional dance works, what we need to do if we ever want to become a professional dancer,” said Evyann, also a Grade 10 student. “I think it is just important to know how everything works and how the big shows are. I think it is amazing,” said Baylie. Both Victoria and Evyann have been in major ballet shows before. “It is good to learn different ballets and each character has different parts and dance,” shared Victoria. “You have different dancers, so how things are run will be different as well.

The automotive section of
Award winning Ford coupe has a long life With history supplied by Ron Pilger and Steve Staysko
Some old cars just never seem to lose their lustre and this 1938 Ford Standard Coupe might be a classic example. Off the Ford assembly line, the car was painted Washington blue (codeM1747). It was owned by a gentleman in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Known, is that this owner drove the car for 57,000 miles. At this point it was involved in a very minor collision on the Salter Street bridge in Winnipeg in 1955. Though the only damage was to the driver’s side rear fender, the car was put into long-term storage. The Ford sat in a garage for the next 14 years, until it was found and purchased by a medical doctor in St. Boniface. Dr Berard kept it for a short period of time and in 1969 he sold it to Mr. Brent Lambert, also a resident of Winnipeg. The general condition of the car at that time, could be described as excellent original except for the minor damage to the left rear fender. However, the original engine was not running and was in very poor condition. A wonderful, high-quality, restoration of the car was carried out between 1972 and the fall of 1975. The original engine block was replaced with a 95 horsepower, 239 cubic inch engine from a 1947 Ford. The engine is the prized 59 AB flathead version. The cast iron cylinder heads and ignition system are genuine 1947 Ford. The fan, generator, crankcase breather, carburetor and fuel pump are original 1938 components. The engine overhaul featured: new bearings, new lifters, new rings and a valve grind. The transmission is the original 1938 and the differential uses the high-speed 3.78-1 gears, which allows the car to cruise comfortably at most highway’s speed limits. The car was re-painted 1936 Light Fast maroon in color. When the all-components restoration was complete, the old Ford spent considerable time at car shows throughout Manitoba, winning top honours. On Sept. 13, 1979, with just 789 miles since the

restoration, the car passed a Manitoba Motor Vehicle Inspection without a demerit. In November 1981, Mr. Ian G. Purves bought the car and moved it to Calgary. The odometer showed a mere 950 miles had been put on the beautiful old car since restoration. On April 7, 1982, another Calgarian – Steve Staysko bought the old Ford from Ian. Mr. Staysko made good use of the reliable, prize-winning car, driving it for a number of years in and around Calgary. He even drove it from Calgary to Vancouver and back to display the car at the 1986 Expo transportation exposition at BC place. The car ran flawlessly on the trip out to Vancouver despite some very heavy rain. The only trouble was the inability of the original vacuum wipers inherent inability to keep up with the torrential liquid sunshine. On the trip home, the route taken was from Hope to Princeton and through the Keremeos to Penticton. Upon arrival in Penticton, Mr. Staysko said the tunes playing on the factory-origi-
nal AM radio were drowned out by an unusual noise coming from under the hood. A prompt inspection revealed the water pump pulley on the driver’s side had broken, leaving only half a pulley, but the fan belt was still intact. A replacement fan belt and water pump was shipped from Edmonton via Greyhound and two days later the owner replaced the parts in the Delta Hotel parking lot. The rest of the trip back to Calgary was uneventful and the old Ford purred along like a kitten. In 1988, I (Ron) became the newest in a string of owners of the trusty, timeless 38 Ford. I continue to treasure this very car. In those 30 years of his ownership, this vintage Ford has remained reliable and highly desirable. Almost no maintenance has been required on the coupe over these three decades–one coil, spark plug wires, condenser, new exhaust system and a carburetor overhaul. It remains ready to roll and ready to show. It always attracts a crowd ranging from old-timers who like to reminisce, middle-agers
who know a bit about cars of this vintage and youth who are eager to see under the hood. One common thread
to all of those who admire this vehicle – they cannot believe they’re staring at an eighty-year old car!

Free infant nutrition classes offered in Camrose

Parents who have questions about feeding their growing baby have access to a free infant nutrition class offered by Alberta Health Services in Camrose. Led by a registered dietitian, the two hour
workshop highlights why babies need to start on iron-rich foods at six months, how to start introducing solid foods and why progressing to different food textures is important. Parents are encouraged to bring babies to the class, which
focuses on creating a positive feeding relationship. AHS dietitians answer questions and show parents how to make their own baby food using a variety of kitchen tools they may already have at home. Parents learn how to prepare vegetables,
fruit, meat and meat alternatives using a number of different tools, including hand mixers, food mills and food processors. The class ends with a taste test to compare store-bought baby foods and homemade baby foods for taste and texture.
Infant Nutrition will be offered in Camrose on Thursday, March 22 from 10 a.m. until noon at Camrose Public Health (5510-46 Avenue). For more information and to register to attend, call 780-679-2980.

Large grant keeps Camrose youth active By Lori Larsen
A $25,000 grant made to KidSport Camrose by Ivari Insurance will enable at least 85 children in the community to participate in organized sports this year who otherwise may not have been able. The grant was part of the Healthy Steps Program, designed to support organizations that help to teach children and young people skills that will empower them to develop healthy habits. These skills include healthy eating, health education and active lifestyles. Details about the program can be found on the Ivari website at http:// ivari.ca/about-us/corporate-information. “On Dec. 13, 2016, we (KidSport Camrose) made a one-hour presentation to Ivari as part of the application process for the Healthy Steps Program grant,” said KidSport Camrose president Kristy Smith. The presentation outlined specifics on the Camrose chapter and how the community supports KidSport Camrose along with the types of children and youth KidSport assists. “At KidSport, we believe that no child/youth should be left on the sideline and that all should have the opportunity to experience the healthy, positive benefits of organized sports,” said Smith in describing KidSport Camrose mandate. “We aligned with the Healthy Step program in that we promote healthy mind and body, working in groups, cooperating, build-
ing confidence and socializing.” In 2017, KidSport Camrose was told they were successful in obtaining the grant. “They were not only impressed by our presentation, but the fact that people who donate to KidSport Camrose appreciate that every penny they give us goes to support a child/ youth in our community who would not otherwise be able to participate in sports.” Smith added that there are very little administration costs involved with KidSport Camrose and what there are, for example the cost of stamps, are covered by the funds raised during the Spring Bike Swap event. “We don’t make a lot of money during the Bike Swap. It is more about being able to provide bikes to children in our community who may otherwise not be able to get one.” Another part of the application process for the grant was to identify KidSport Camrose sources of funding, which Smith indicated includes winter raffle ticket sales and the Spring Bike Swap. “We are also funded through local donors and grants that we apply for and local events when needed,” said Smith. ports and who is eligible for KidSport funding. “Children who are age 18 and under are able to receive funding from us at $350 per child per year,” said Smith. “Eligible applicants include low income families, people on AISH (Assured Income for Severely Handicapped), unemployed or receiving income support through the provincial government. “We consider social and economic barriers facing families when determining eligibility.” Smith concluded with words of gratitude and excitement on KidSport

FLYING PRIDE Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer raises the Pride flag at the Bill Fowler Centre on Feb. 26 in recognition of Pride Week, Feb. 25 to March 2. The request to fly the flag was approved by City Council during the regular council meeting on Feb. 20.
The Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce 2018 board of directors were sworn in during the 108th annual general meeting, held on Feb. 7 at the Camrose Resort Casino. The 2018 Board of Directors consist of President Julie Girard, 1st vicepresident Trevor Vinet, 2nd vice-president Chuck Erman. Directors serving second year term Tracy Brandigen, Denise Hawkins, Jenn Henderson and Tony Metivier. Reelected directors, to serve two year terms, are Sam Bowen, Marilou Yampolsky and Jennifer Routhier. New directors are Sterling Bascello, Jessica Puddicombe, Ron Sutherland and Jason Heise (returning after taking a few years off.) Guests were welcomed by board president Julie Girard. “It is a great celebration to be 108 years old and to have such a vibrant and healthy organization, so congratulations to each and every member of this organization and thanks for helping us maintain
and keep this going and being better and brighter every year.” MLA WetaskiwinCamrose Bruce Hinkley gave greetings on behalf of the Province of Alberta and Mayor Norm Mayer brought greetings on behalf of the City of Camrose council. Chamber executive director Sharon Anderson indicated there were 12 membership non-renewals in 2017 and 25 new members were welcomed bringing the total number of members to over 380. Review and engagement report on the financial position of the Chamber was presented by Dean Inman of Kroeger Joyce Chartered Accountants for the year ended Oct. 31, 2017. “Based on our review, nothing has come to our attention that causes us to believe that these financial statements are not, in all material respects, in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations.” Continued on page 31

Since the early ‘80s, Syl Thompson has been paying tribute to David Bowie’s music with respect and pride. Thompson embraces Bowie’s musical style and persona. A Night of Bowie: The Definitive Bowie Experience will be held at the Bailey Theatre on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. David Bowie is one of music history’s most praised and successful artists, with a career that has spanned four decades. Bowie continuously sought to re-invent himself, while selling an estimated 140 million albums. His genre-defying journey through a vast array of musical styles, from rock to funk, dance to ballad, always kept fans guessing what he would do next. A Night Of Bowie is a celebration of his extensive list of memorable hits. Victoria musician Thompson and his band have been paying tribute to the musical works of David Bowie for more than three decades. This show is a multimedia extravaganza. Six highly respected musicians play each song as Bowie and his band performed them live. With VJPhoton providing a visual experience second to none, with photos and videos unique to each song. The look and feel of this concert replicates the Heathen/Reality Tour. Music spans the broad spectrum of Bowie’s hits from 1969’s Space Oddity to 2013’s Where Are We Now? The show is eerily close to hearing and seeing Bowie himself. Thompson’s own musical journey has been chock full of high points. In 1987, he opened for the Beach Boys at the Pacific Coliseum. Around this time, a manager of a Richmond nightclub heard him perform and remarked that Thompson had the look, moves and sound of Bowie and suggested he cover a few of Bowie’s songs. Before long, Thompson was dedicating a full set to the music of David Bowie. He renamed the band Major Tom and embarked on a year-long tour throughout North America. Camrose Women’s Shelter Society operates a 22 bed facility that offers services in support of women and children requiring emergency shelter due to domestic violence, crisis situations or homelessness. We are currently recruiting for the following two positions:
FAMILY SUPPORT COORDINATOR (18 MONTH MATERNITY LEAVE)
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Family Support Coordinator establishes and maintains healthy professional relationships with the women and children residing within the Camrose Women’s Shelter. The Coordinator delivers group programs and individual supports to educate, inform, and provide a role model for the mother-child relationship; provides age appropriate sessions for children; liaises with community agencies to meet specific needs of the child, mother or family unit; coordinates and/or provides childcare as required; assists in transition planning; and is a member of the Shelter’s direct service team. Other responsibilities include supervision of Child Care Workers and recruitment of staff as required; submit monthly reports to the Executive Director describing program progress or changes; oversee the care, maintenance and safety of children’s equipment and recreation area.
