Letters to the Editor Too dear, or not to dear
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a column called, “I Am Not Your Dear.” It was somewhat of a rant about feeling irritated by fake terms of endearment from people who don’t even know me – cashiers, health care practitioners, restaurant serving staff, telemarketers… Within a few minutes of me emailing the column to The Booster, one of the Booster team sent a response that made me laugh out loud: “Just wanted to say thanks ‘Dear’ for this week’s column.” It’s so nice to be taken seriously! That was the first of several responses I received – and I learned there’s more than one perspective. To dear or not to dear: Mostly not but…the next response I received made me smile. “I can really identify with you on this. These fake terms of endearment simply tell me that they think I’m old. Not news to me. However, one time when I was in Texas, a waitress called me ‘Hunny.’ I had to smile. Made me think of Winnie the Pooh Bear.” Charming. To dear or not to dear: Not! A few people sent notes that told me I am not the only one who does not like strangers calling me “Dear.” For example, one person finds the practice condescending: “I read the column just a few hours ago and I’m glad you wrote it. I completely agree with you. Just the other day a cashier in a grocery store addressed me as “dear.” People who know me well would be surprised that I didn’t react negatively. I felt like it, but kept it in check. A complete stranger calling someone ‘dear’ comes across as being condescending. That’s unacceptable behaviour. Thanks for writing about it.” Another finds the practice patronizing: “The article about ‘My dear’ is exactly what I feel. I’ve recently had someone say, ‘I will solve the problem for you, dear,’ and ‘I agree with you, my dear.’ All this on the phone. Never met the guy, he has no idea who I am, yet he can be so patronizing. “Such terms of endearment are reserved for family and friends only. As you said in your article: ‘It set my teeth on edge.’ Makes me feel better. I’m not the only one gritting my teeth! “I enjoyed your article very much, but think it a real pity that women have to put up with such comments from people they don’t even know. And in 2018 yet!” To dear or not to dear: what’s the fuss? I was ready to enjoy a bout of self-righteous hrumphing when I received an email that changed my perspective. “You certainly have an aversion to being called ‘Dear.’ I can respect that but it prompted me to look back on my life and what I occupy myself with now. Yes, sometimes I call a woman ‘Dear.’ Well, I’m 82, so I don’t think anyone really takes offense. It is very seldom but it does slip out when I have a pleasant incident. Other than that I probably call people all sorts of names under my breath. “Anyway, in my professional and personal life I have encountered names far from dear. I have had a gun pointed at me, I have been threatened quite a number of times, cursed at, had attempts to attack me to injure, been sued twice and still have a letter that you could not print in the newspaper. “So now when a female co-worker says I am a sweetheart, I take it for what it is. They mean well. “I hear you, but on my list ‘Dear’ is close to the bottom of interfering with my thought patterns.” To dear or not to dear – where does that leave us? So. I still don’t like being called “Dear” by people who don’t know me. I choose not to use terms of endearment with people I don’t know well. And – like the man said – I don’t need to let unwanted terms of endearment interfere with my thought patterns! ***

The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Fear not
Having travelled recently by air, something I hadn’t done since 2001, I was amazed when we entered the airport. There were signs on the walls of impending danger and at regular intervals over the intercom came warnings to allow no one near your luggage. I said to my husband, “Does no one trust God?” Fear is a very powerful emotion that immobilizes, constricts, paralyzes and binds us in crippling ways. This is different from a healthy respect for natural laws and innate wisdom in the face of obvious danger.
Something I’ve thought of since the years of ‘terrorist attack’ is the propaganda in what defines the word terrorist. While I spend very little time with the news, I realize that bad things happen. Does this determine our reactions to all of the future? By nature and the experience of life we seem very capable of working with what we see. Rules and regulations are connected to manipulations and control and are often the result of fear. I would suggest that the biggest threat of terrorism is not outside forces as much as the power of our thoughts and inner life. We carry feelings of fear, hatred, unforgiveness, disgust (for ourselves and others), self-righteousness and strife with us regularly. We think our thoughts are our own business, but they often eventually affect others. Our thoughts have a way of becoming words and actions. How many people have I wounded, some maybe permanently, by bad inner feelings that disintegrate others? We spend time in miserable and discour-
BOOK SIGNING
aging existence because of the ‘terrorist’ attitude we indulge in. The power of our mind is both an amazingly good and destructive thing. I have read that fear and anger cause most cancer, fear of the future or imaginary fear cause high blood pressure and diabetes. Anger, fear, ill will and resentment can help bring on arthritis. It seems we can treat disease to some extent, but what is the “pill” that will heal our emotions? I recommend faith and trust in God as the best antidote for fear and all its illnatured cousins. Three Bible verses that are a great help are, “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom”, “God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power of love and of a sound mind,” and “The Lord is my salvation, who shall I fear.” We have many more promises in the Bible about how God looks after us and wants to help us by believing in Him and in His promises, so we need not walk in fear. Three-time Olympian and four-time Tim Hortons Brier champion Kevin Martin, formerly of Lougheed, will be inducted into the World Curling Hall of Fame as announced by the World Curling Federation. Martin, who won gold for Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and silver in 2002 at Salt Lake City, is one of three new members of the Hall. Martin was a television announcer at the recent Grand Slam of Curling event in Camrose. He also curled in Camrose in several bonspiels early in his career. “Once again in 2018, we will induct more of curling’s finest servants of the game,” said WCF president Kate Caithness in the release. “Elmer Freytag, Young C. Kim and Kevin Martin are names synonymous with the sport of curling and the good health it finds itself in today. Each of them has brought their passion, drive and unique personality to our sport in very different ways and I thank them sincerely for that.” Martin also represented Canada at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, where curling was a demonstration sport. He won Brier titles in 1991, 1997, 2008 and 2009–the latter two with perfect 13-0 records, joined by teammates third John Morris, second Marc Kennedy, lead Ben Hebert and coach Jules Owchar. That team would then win gold at the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings in 2009 in Edmonton, to earn the right to represent Canada at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. There, Martin would skip Canada to another perfect record, rattling off nine straight round-robin victories and then following up with back-to-back wins in the playoffs, nailing down the gold medal with a 6-3 win over Norway’s Thomas Ulsrud in the gold-medal game. Martin’s career also included an unprecedented 18 victories in Grand Slam events. “In a high-performance playing career that spanned three decades, Kevin won every event imaginable,” said Resby Coutts, chair of Curling Canada’s board of governors. “And he did it with a flair and style that thrilled fans around the world.” Martin’s formal induction ceremony will take place later this season, dates and location to be confirmed by the World Curling Federation.

Chester Ronning School replacement for students, families By Murray Green
Replacing Chester Ronning School in Camrose will offer students a state-of-the-art learning environment. The replacement school will be constructed on the west site of the existing building, ensuring that students have access to the same community neighbourhood resources and supports. The school, which is expected to be completed in 2022-23, will be eligible for solar panel funding as well as a new playground. “While we remain committed to building new schools to fit the growing number of students in Alberta, we know that existing schools need updating, too. The new Chester Ronning School will be more economical to run and better fitted to serve the elementary students of Camrose,” said Premier Rachel Notley in Camrose on March 26. “The school has reached a point where the cost of repair and upkeep just doesn’t make sense. The project will allow the school to offer improved programming, with more flexible learning spaces to encourage student collaboration. It will also ensure that mechanical and electrical systems are up to date,” the Premier noted. The modernization of Chester Ronning School was number one on the BRSD capital list. It has significant mechanical, electrical and structural issues that need to be addressed. This project was approved last year, but not funded. Ultimately, the government made the decision to replace the school. BRSD learned of the decision on March 22 when the Premier visited Camrose and toured the school herself. “As an educator, I believe building new schools is one of the most important things we can do. It’s an investment in our children and in our future. Chester Ronning will create a new safe and caring school for Camrose,” said Bruce Hinkley, MLA for Wetaskiwin-Camrose. Originally constructed
FUTURE STUDENT
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Top: Alberta Premier Rachel Notley announced a replacement for Chester Ronning School so future students such as Dawn Howe can enjoy a modern learning place in Camrose. Above: Alberta Education Minister David Eggen leaves his handprint beside the Premier’s print on the Circle of Courage board near the entrance of the school.
in 1968, Chester Ronning School now serves about 280 students. The new school is projected to have a capacity of 350 students. “We know that invest-
ing in education is one of the most important investments we can make in our province’s future, and that is why we will continue to make these important
investments,” said David Eggen, Alberta Minister of Education. “Each and every child deserves to learn and grow in modern classrooms and
have world class opportunities. That’s why we are improving existing schools and building new ones where they’re needed. Chester Ronning will have bright and fun learning spaces. The library will have a new learning commons and a new gymnasium large enough for volleyball,” said Premier Rachel Notley. “It will be energy efficient with modern heating and solar panels, which will contribute to off-setting energy costs. A child born today could well see the 23rd century. Think of the changes those children will see. Today we can help them get the best possible start in life as they begin the incredible journey going forward. When we invest in schools, we invest in the next generation.” These 20 school projects will create more than 4,900 jobs. For almost all of the projects, construction is scheduled to begin in 2019, after design work is complete. “We know the school is well-maintained and it looks good on the surface and I thank staff for that. As parents, we know that despite how beautiful it is, it has some challenges. We know a lot of the systems have lasted past their life expectancies. BRSD has had to work hard to keep things running smoothly. Now they will have a new school they can love,” said Kelly Kaczmarski, chair of the Chester Ronning School parent council. “The funding and planning will commence now. The replacement of schools has become more efficient and is expected to cost between $15 and 17 million. We have exceeded timelines in the past and could be open by 2021-22 or sooner. With the new schools we expect to save upwards of $500,000 in operating expenses every year because they are just that much more efficient,” added Eggen.

Fighting back against rural crime By Wes Taylor, MLA Battle River-Wainwright
There are few in the riding who have not been touched by the recent upsurge in crime. Far too many are direct victims, and almost everyone knows personally a victim or the victim’s family. Back in November, the UCP pressed the NDP for an emergency debate on the topic. We presented written testimony from victims, many of them present in the public gallery. However, the Speaker, NDP MLA Bob Wanner said the UCP request “did not meet the emergency criteria”. Indeed, the NDP denied an emergency existed. Just how bad do things have to be to qualify as an emergency? In 2015-16, rural crime rates in parts of Alberta have jumped more than 80 per cent. In September 2017 the Killam RCMP Detachment statistics showed B&Es up by 19 per cent in their area. Twelve of Canada’s 50 most dangerous places for crime are now in Alberta. Albertans will remember that, also back in November, the UCP asked for an emergency debate on the Trans Mountain project. This to the NDP sloughed off. Since that refusal the NDP have performed a major U-turn and are now adopting ideas advocated by the UCP as evidenced in the recent Throne speech. I am happy to report that on the topic of rural crime the NDP performed yet another U-turn. They have at least now acknowledged the rural crime problem. They have had plenty of warning. I personally wrote to the NDP Minister of Justice, Kathleen Ganley, back in March 2017, as did the Mayor of Amisk, Bill Rock whose village, and surrounding area, had been hit by a plague of crime. I did not receive even the courtesy of a reply, let alone a remedy. In addition, no one from Minister Ganley’s staff accepted the invites from the village of Amisk to come and see their problems first hand. I arranged our constituency’s first Town Hall back in February 2017 in Hardisty and a subsequent Town Hall was held in Killam in June 2017. In March 2017, the Wildrose set up its Rural Crime Task Force. This group held numerous Town Halls throughout Alberta and used the information and feedback from our Town Halls and its own as evidence in the UCP request for an emergency debate. This debate was, as mentioned, denied. In late September 2017, concerned constituents on the Highway 13 corridor arranged a meeting in Rosyth Hall. From this meeting the East 13 Rural Crime Watch organization came into being. I’d like to take a moment to thank the following individuals who volunteered to be part of this group and are seeking to take action where their government wouldn’t: Blake Moser (president), Brian Golka (vice-president), Orrin Ford (vice-president), Gina Vetter (secretary), Connie Wahlstrom (treasurer) Angela Large, Bill Rock, Bob Scott, Corinne Butt, Daardi Almberg, Kent Swanson, Marilyn Horn, Patti Hovde and Penny Clark Perhaps the lobbying paid off as, finally, on March 9, the NDP Minister of Justice, Kathleen Ganley, announced a “seven point action plan” designed to address a topic which, according to the NDP, was not an emergency three months ago. While, of course, I welcome the NDPs acknowledgement of the problem, I must point out how slow they have been to react. Having finally reacted I am disappointed by the scale and scope of the response. The UCP decision not to support this current proposal predicated on the understanding that the proposal is purely smoke and mirrors. In point-of-fact the reality is that it is too little and too late. Take for example the promise to hire an additional 10 Crown prosecutors. This sounds like good news, but the reality is 21 Crown Prosecutors have left the role in last 12 months. Therefore, the NDP is not even back filling vacancies, let alone enhancing the service. These resignations did not occur all at once. The pattern of falling morale was emerging, if but the minister of justice and her staff could be bothered to notice. The NDP also promised an additional 39 RCMP officers, 39 officers may sound like a significant number, but it really is not. Last year, the Saskatchewan government decided to hire an additional 258 officers to address their similar problem. That is nearly seven times as many officers as the NDP are proposing. You can contact Wes Taylor, MLA Battle River-Wainwright at his office 780-842-6177 or fax 780- 842-3171.

New golf supervisor on course
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose’s new golf services supervisor Dean Dereniuk. By Lori Larsen
The City of Camrose welcomes Dean Dereniuk as the new golf services supervisor and head golf professional. Dean comes to Camrose from, most recently, Sylvan Lake, where he was the head pro for the Meadowlands Golf Club in Sylvan Lake, but he has deep roots in the Camrose area. “It is so nice because everybody has been welcoming me, but I am actually originally from this area,” smiled Dean. “I grew up in Bawlf and I know this area very well. I grew up here, worked here and golfed at this golf course probably a 100 times.” Dean said he is excited to have the opportunity to come back to Camrose and looks forward to moving his family, wife Jamie and their two young daughters, threeyear-old Jorgia and oneyear-old Callie to the city. Although it has been 23-plus years since Dean has lived in the area, he is excited to be back among his family and old friends and looks forward to being a part of the community. “One of the things that attracted me to this job is the fact that I am from this area. I know the golf course really well and I know a lot of the people. My phone lit up with family and friends welcoming me back to the area. It was a little overwhelming at first, but really nice to see everybody.” With 11 years of working in a golf course setting under his belt, Dean admits he is still fairly young in his golf career, but his passion for the sport includes playing the game for over 30 years. “I have done a lot of trades work all over Northern and Central Alberta, then 11 years ago, I got into the golf work world after taking the Professional Golf Management program through Grant MacEwan where I was very successful, both academically and as a player. During my university years, I began work-
ing at the Raven Crest Golf Course in Edmonton as the assistant golf professional where I ran the lesson programs, junior programs and leagues and also did some maintenance work with the course.” With a desire to continue growth within his golf career, Dean and family moved to Sylvan Lake where he became the head golf pro, until he was successful in acquiring the position with the City of Camrose as golf services supervisor. “I had a lot of opportunities at Meadowlands Golf Club in Sylvan and a lot of very good mentors there. I was able to gain a variety of experience, including some non-golf related, because the course was owned by a development company that had an interest in developing the land around the golf course. It was very interesting because I was able to work with the town and other non-golf vendors on this development project.” Dean said he and his family will be moving to Camrose once the sale of their home in Sylvan is complete and Jamie has fulfilled her present contract as an LPN (licenced practical nurse) with Red Deer Hospital. Dean smiled broadly when he spoke about his two daughters and it is clear to see that family is an important part of his life. “My three-year-old daughter is already able to hit a golf ball. You should see her face, she gets so intense. I don’t know if she will golf, but it is fun to bring her out here.” And that is exactly what Dean hopes to see happen at Camrose Golf Course – families coming out and enjoying the game together. As a City-owned and operated course, Dean indicated the vision of the City, along with himself, is to create a slightly different culture of a fami-
ly-friendly facility. “I am that demographic. I have a young family and I take my children with me golfing and the City wants the golf course to be seen that way. “We want fathers to bring sons, mothers to bring daughters or the other way around, and play golf. That is the future of the game – families playing golf together.” Having come from a market of promoting family golf, Dean is a good fit for the Camrose Golf Course. “The City wants to make it affordable for families and everyone,” he said, adding that it has even reduced the membership fees. With an objective of attracting children and youth to the game of golf, the City, with Dean at the helm, hopes to build on the image that the golf course is open to everyone and encourages families to come out and enjoy the game. With additional background in golf specific food and beverage operations, Dean will also be responsible for taking over the food and beverage operation in an effort to streamline it and make it more consistent for members and guests. He noted that the golf course clubhouse mandate is not to compete as a restaurant, but have some consistency and service to golfers. With his easy-going manner and very approachable attitude, Dean hopes to create an atmosphere at the golf club that welcomes all. “We want to focus on the people of Camrose and attract them back to the golf course. I try to be very friendly and I am definitely a family-orientated person. As a family, we like to get involved in the community and hopefully I can bring that to the golf course and it will pour over onto the staff.” One of Dean’s personal goals is to ensure members coming to the golf course say they were treated well, the staff were friendly and they had an enjoyable experience. He confesses it will take a while to get to know people, but there is no doubt he will make every effort to do so. Dean is available at the clubhouse weekdays from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and welcomes anyone from the community to come meet him and chat. If you want to contact Dean, telephone the pro shop at 780-672-2691. Depending on weather, the course is expected to be open mid-April at the earliest. Memberships fees are available online at www. camrose.ca/163/Golf-Course.

Citizens voice their opinions
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster City of Camrose corporate business manager Trina McCarroll goes over the results of the Citizen Input Survey 2018. By Lori Larsen
The City of Camrose heard from the citizens and 1,170 responses to the City’s Citizen Input Survey 2018 revealed some interesting information. City of Camrose corporate business planner Trina McCarroll summarized the results from the four main questions, most of which were open-ended questions (requiring more thought and more than a yes or no response). “We analyzed four similar answers then grouped them. Because the questions (first three) were open-ended, people answered about the community in general, not about municipal jurisdiction.” Responses were broken down into percentages within three main categories including top 10 responses, moderate number of responses and limited number of responses. The percentage is based on the total number of responses for each survey question, factoring in that respondents could fill in up to three responses. The top three responses to the first question, What are three things that make Camrose a great place to live? were: 25.5 per cent of responses indicated Camrose was the perfect size, 19 per cent indicated Camrose has wonderful green spaces and 9.1 per cent indicated Camrose has friendly and community-minded people. The total number of responses was 2,886. The top three responses to the second question, What are three things that would make Camrose a better place to live? were: 7.9 per cent indicated improve the Aquatic Centre, 7.2 per cent indicated more diverse/better shopping and 6.4 per cent indicated improve/more recreation for young children and families. The total number of responses was 2,900. “Obviously more diverse/better shopping is not a municipal responsi-
bility, but the respondents were talking about the types of shops they would like,” said McCarroll, adding that about half of the respondents indicated a need for more big box stores while the other half said no more big box stores, only small boutiques/shops. “The improved/more recreation for young children and families was something new,” said McCarroll. “A lot of the comments here were about indoor recreation on evenings and weekends for families to do together.” Road conditions and public transit moved down the list of responses from being in the top three (including Aquatic Centre) in the 2014 survey, “Possibly because the City has been investing in public transit and road improvement.” The top three responses to the third question, What are three things that would make Camrose a better place to run a business? were: 14.1 per cent indicated lower taxes, 6.9 per cent indicated incentives/promotion for people to shop and buy local and 6 per cent indicated lower lease/ rent prices. The total number of responses was 951. The top three responses to the second part of question three, What are three things that would make Camrose a better place to work? were: 21.9 per cent indicated better transit system (being able to get to and from work), 21.7 per cent indicated more/better job opportunities and 15.7 per cent indicated more industry/more diverse industry. The total number of responses was 452. The top three responses to the fourth question (not an open-ended question), The City of Camrose provides many services to citizens. Select up to five (5) service areas that you feel could be improved. were: 44.4 per cent indicated Aquatic Centre services/ programs, 30.9 per cent indicated attracting more
quality jobs and 29 per cent indicated competitive property taxes. The total number of responses was 3,778. McCarroll said she plans to connect with various community partners such as education, health, social sector and the business community in an effort to share responses received about each segment. “In this round (2018 Survey), there were a lot more responses about the community in general, not just municipal responsibility. We want to make sure everyone gets as much use out of this data as possible.” McCarroll added the City was pleased with the amount of informative data the survey provided. “We really appreciate the citizens taking the time to fill it out and tell us their opinions. Council and administration are looking at the results seriously and considering how we are able to act on it. The City has started strategic planning and initial discussions have included the Aquatic Centre, responsible city spending and employment opportunities in Camrose, which were some of the top citizen responses in the survey.” Results of the survey will soon be available on the City of Camrose website at www.camrose.ca/.

Bridge out of commission By Lori Larsen
On Monday, March 26 construction began again on the 48 Avenue Bridge Replacement project and traffic heading both east and west on 48th Avenue between 51 and 53 Street (over the bridge site) has been detoured around the construction site. Starting on Wednesday, March 21, PSA, the company completing the construction on the 48th Avenue Bridge Replacement Project, set up signage for various detour routes throughout Camrose. City of Camrose crews installed additional signage for the parking restrictions along 50 Street (between 48 Avenue and 47 Avenue, southbound lanes only), as well as along 47 Avenue (between 53 Street and 50 Street, south side of the street only). City crews also installed 4-way stop
signs at the intersections of 53 Street and 47 Avenue, as well as at 50 Street and 47 Avenue. In an effort to ensure safety and that citizens are adjusting to the detours around the 48 Avenue closure the City, PSA and AMEC will be monitoring traffic throughout the City, particularly along the key bypass routes and at key intersections, during the first few days and weeks after the 48 Avenue road closure is in place. The City will work with PSA and AMEC to determine if any further changes are needed to the traffic network, such as additional parking restrictions, 4-way stops, or changes to signals. Drivers are reminded to use caution and be especially vigilant to changes in the traffic flow around Camrose during the 48 Avenue road closure.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Traffic on 48 Avenue is being rerouted during the bridge closure and construction, which began on March 26.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster City of Camrose new parks director Ken Krueger. By Lori Larsen
The City of Camrose welcomes the new community services department parks director Ken Krueger. Ken came to Camrose from, most recently, Pitt Meadows, BC, where he was the manager of parks and facilities. For the last 18 years, Ken has been working in municipal/public parks and facilities, most recently in Pitt Meadows and prior to that in Slave Lake as manager of facilities and parks. “I also worked for the town of Whitecourt as their parks and open space coordinator,” added Ken. Ken also has a background in the golf course industry. “I worked in the golf course industry for 15 years,” said Ken. “Ten of those as a golf course superintendent in Williams Lake, BC.” Ken’s interest in the parks director position in Camrose was influenced by a few factors. “One of the reasons I came to Camrose was to get back into a strictly parks department position,” he said adding that one of the other driving forces was both he and his girlfriend, Shari, have family in Alberta, specifically Ken’s two daughters
(ages 17 and 19) who live in St. Albert. “One of the other reasons was that we quickly learned after going back to British Columbia (Metro Vancouver area where Pitt Meadows is located) that it has become quite expensive to live there.” Ken also wanted to stay within a smaller community setting. “Even though this is a city, it seems like it is a very close-knit community,” he said, noting that much of the information he learned about Camrose he acquired by reading The Camrose Booster. “I researched a lot of information from looking at The Booster archives and reading about the ski club, hockey and smaller groups such as the bird-watching groups. There is a lot of variety here, a lot of keen interest groups, such as the theatre base and arts program.” Speaking of the importance of a park system within a community, Ken said, “Parks infrastructure is a vital part of a community. It’s where residents spend their after-hours and weekends. It’s an integral part of the community and it has always been an interest of mine to make sure when they come out to a park or playground, the quality is there.”

Ken admitted that for a city the size of Camrose, it has a very large parks infrastructure “with all the trail systems, sports fields, park areas and open spaces.”
For the next few months, Ken will be making observations about the parks system in Camrose and the Parks Master Plan and determining the best
way to move the plan forward when needed. Ken can be contacted through the City of Camrose Community Services Department Parks at 780-672-9195.

The Choirs of Augustana Campus and Chorale Saint-Jean present
REQUIEM FOR THE LIVING by
Dan Forrest with
Requiem Orchestra John Wiebe conductor
Tuesday, April 10th, 8:00 PM Cargill Theatre, Lougheed Centre, 4501-50th St., Camrose Tickets www.CamroseLive.ca $35 adults; $32 students and seniors
FOR THE LIVING
Murray Green, Camrose Booster University of Alberta Augustana campus choir leader Dr. John Wiebe, top, offers his experience to a group of singers from Sangkor, Mannskor and Camerata to bring Requiem For The Living. They will also be joined by the Chorale Saint-Jean and professional band players.
Requiem for the Living By Murray Green
University of Alberta Augustana Campus Choirs, together with Chorale SaintJean, members of Camrose Camerata and the Requiem Orchestra combine forces to perform the magnificent Requiem for the Living by Dan Forrest, a contemporary work for choir and full orchestra, April 10. “The choir tradition in Camrose is really strong, it’s a Lutheran community tradition. Choirs are a strong part of what we do on campus. We have more than 120 singers in our three choirs and every couple of years we like to present larger works. Larger means in size and scope. This year, we have chosen an American composer. It requires a full orchestra and we have professionals from Edmonton joining us,” said conductor Dr. John Wiebe. All three of Augustana’s choirs (led by John) together with Chorale Saint-Jean (led by Laurier Fagnan) and members of Camrose Camerata (led by Joy-Anne Murphy) will unite their 180 voices to sing this masterpiece. “Requiem for the Living is a large concert and one piece is about 45 minutes long. It takes you on an epic journey with intense moments of passion and there are incredible moments of calm and peacefulness, a full gamont as it takes you through a journey,” explained John. This new work has been performed around the world to rave reviews and recognized for its grandeur and timeless beauty. The Augustana Choir and Chorale Saint-Jean will also perform selections from amongst their favourites. This is going to be one concert you will not want to miss this year. “The challenge in coordinating that many people is in the planning and the details leading up to the event. When the planning is done, we have rehearsals. Everything then falls into place. It comes together because that is what it is meant to be designed for. It is meant for large forces like this.” Since 1912, they have had a choir on campus and today we host one of the leading undergraduate choral programs in our country, led by our auditioned chamber ensemble, the Augustana Choir. Together with our two student-community choirs, Sangkor and Mannskor, it totals over 100 singers who proudly continue the Augustana tradition of presenting
large-scale choral-orchestral works in our community. “The students, and for everyone, it is an opportunity for them to participate, or to perform in a larger work of art,” shared John. “With our culture now we have shorter elements. This has a 45 minute element. Movies are the one spot left in our culture that you are willing to sit for
two hours to get through one work of art. It’s best to experience a movie on a big screen and full sound. It is the same with this, best to experience it live in front of you. The students learn about a work of art that is more than three minutes long.” Continued on page 19

Requiem for the Living Continued from page 18
Established in 1937, Chorale Saint-Jean of the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean is one of Edmonton’s longest-established choirs. With members coming from both the francophone community and the university student body, Chorale SaintJean was formed to celebrate and preserve the heritage and language of the francophone community in the west and has become the largest and most active francophone choir in Western Canada. “We have one rehearsal with everyone, then it is concert time. That is often the case with a professional orchestra. We trust that everyone has learned their part and when we all get together it flows the way it should. With the other choir, we meet regularly, so we go over the score together and we come to an agreement on how the choirs come together.” A concert will be held in Edmonton prior to the Camrose date with the Edmonton conductor taking charge. Then John is the lead when they perform in Camrose. “It’s great we can do that. Everyone spends three months working on this, so it is good that we have more than one concert.” Requiem is a mass for the dead. The American composer Forrest is taking a different view and having a mass for the living. The choirs and music are talking to us, those who are here and now. Don’t miss this evening of beautiful, moving choralorchestral music, Tuesday, April 10 at 8 p.m. at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre.

The Camrose Spirals Jump Rope Club will be hosting Provincials at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus on April 7 and 8. “Nine of the top teams from across Alberta will be competing on the first day. On the second day, individual events will be held,” said Spirals president Crystal Rasmussen. “Camrose hasn’t hosted Provincials since 2012. We held a master event, but it doesn’t have the same number of people involved,” said Crystal. “The reason we haven’t hosted in a long time is because it is hard to lock down a facility that can host this kind of an event. About 116 athletes will be here from the age 10 and under category to the over 30s. There are a lot of different age groups.” The action begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday with team events. Most teams have four or five skippers that compete in both speed and freestyle events. Individual skippers begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday and will go until everyone has completed their routines.
It starts with speed events and then features freestyle categories. “We have 17 athletes on the Camrose Spirals. The coaches are Jodi Harrison and Carley Angelstad, both former Spirals. The parents organize all of the volunteers, which is hard because a lot of the parents are also judges. We have to do a lot of juggling around the judging.” The nine skip rope clubs across Alberta usually take turns hosting Provincials. “It felt it was our turn to host and we found a facility. We have to follow timelines as well. Provincials has to be held in early April in order to give the winners time to prepare for nationals, which is always held on the May long weekend,” explained Crystal. Teams will be coming from as far away as Calgary, Okotoks, Grimshaw and Bonnyville. “The Camrose community has always been supportive of our club and it has even been overwhelming how businesses have given us deals on items we need for the event,” said Crystal.
“Our athletes are excited to have Provincials at home. I’m proud to have the event in our home town. You don’t get the home crowd supporting you if you go to Grimshaw or Bonnyville. This is a chance for family and friends to see the athletes in action and cheer them on. We welcome the public to come out and see them perform. There is no charge to come and watch them in action. Skipping isn’t just a playground event, this is much different and a lot of training goes into the routines. This is a good opportunity for that. The athletes train two-and-a-half hours a night, three nights a week.” Camrose has three teams and two of those teams of skippers will be competing at the national level in Ontario. “Because of the number of teams allowed in each category from Alberta, we already know that they have qualified. If they want to compete as an individual, they have to earn it. We should have some athletes qualify for nationals as individuals.”

Elizabeth “Betty” Lynn Leroux October 24, 1956 ~ March 26, 2018 Betty was born in Daysland, Alberta on October 24, 1956 to Andy and Esther Wolbeck. She grew up in Heisler and she was the youngest of six children, Mary Ann (Elldon) Niehaus, Shirley (Ronnie) Heisler, Calvin (Maryanne) Wolbeck, Derald (Mariann) Wolbeck and Dennis (Dixie) Wolbeck. Betty was living in Heisler and working at the hotel where she met her husband Vic. They later moved to Camrose in 1998. Vic passed away in 2013. She enjoyed spending her days surrounded by family. Her favourite things were family functions, going on camping trips, playing cards, and Bingo. Betty loved to bake and she never wanted to show up to someone’s house empty-handed. Her buns, cinnamon rolls, pies and doughnuts will be remembered by all. Betty’s presence was always known as she would bring a smile and laughter to the room. Her days were filled with all her morning coffee visits, and spending time with her grandchildren, attending all their sporting events. Left to cherish her memory are her three children and grandchildren, Jody (Clayton) Frey of Beaumont, grandchildren Easton and Emerson; Renee (Andre) Blanchette of Camrose, grandchildren Carson, Reid, and Bailey; and Brooke Leroux of Camrose. Betty passed away peacefully at the Daysland Hospital on March 26, 2018. She was a wonderful woman who will be missed by everyone who knew her. Time to get your classic vehicle ready for spring By Murray Green
You might not think spring is coming with all of the snow still on the ground, but spring is coming. After storing your prize classic over the winter, it is time to make a checklist and get it back on the road. This time of year offers more sun and warmer temperatures and it calls for a different strategy for car care. Ideally, you should inflate your tires to the maximum PSI rating (indicated on the sidewall). This will prevent the tires from developing flat spots. It is not necessary to remove modern radial tires and it is not advised to put a car up on blocks and leave the suspension hanging for an extended period of time. Tire pressure is especially important in the spring. As air temperatures get cooler during the winter, tire pressures decrease, which probably caused you to fill up your regular vehicle’s tires during the winter months. Having all of your tires at the same pressure is important. As air gets warmer again in the spring, tire pressures can increase. If the pressure increases past your manufacturer specification (because you added air during the winter), it can seriously affect your car’s handling and fuel economy. The first thing on your list is to perform a thorough check under the hood to ensure your engine made it through the winter without problems. Prior to winter you should have changed the oil and filter and added grease. This oil is now old and should be changed at your earliest opportunity, even if you changed it just before storage. Don’t skip this step. Fresh oil is cheap insurance for the health of your engine. Examine belts and hoses to make sure the cold temperatures haven’t rendered them brittle. Check for wear. View the coolant
SPRING READY
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Spring is the perfect time to do inspections on your vehicle to ensure it is ready for the spring and summer months.
to make sure it’s not too old, which can be an important factor for avoiding overheating as temperatures gradually climb as it goes from spring to summer. Take your battery out and store it in the house, leave it on a piece of wood over winter. Inspect the battery before connecting. Some newer cars require the battery stay connected at all times to preserve the computer’s memory. In this case, carefully examine the battery for possible bulges. You can perform these checks on your own, or contact a trusted mechanic. It is better to get billed for an extra hour of labour, than going into the spring with potential issues lurking under your hood. Check the alignment and suspension. Even if you don’t drive your classic in the winter, it is a good time to do a yearly inspection. Most people like to drive their cars for enjoyment. If you trailer your vehicle,
still create a good habit by doing a spring inspection. Spring roads can be harsh on your vehicle. If you find yourself frequently using roads with huge potholes, or rocks that have emerged from the asphalt, it could ruin your car’s alignment or damage suspension components. If you’ve taken your car to a mechanic to check under the hood, ask for a quick suspension and alignment check to make sure nothing is too far outside the manufacturer’s specifications. As spring starts expect any kind of weather. You could start out on a clear day, but it might turn to rain or snow. Check your wiper blades for any signs of cracking or wear. The wiper itself could wear dramatically because of rapid changes in temperatures. In most parts of the country, you’ll need those wipers for spring rains. A good, thorough wash
and wax is the most important thing to do with your car once the winter is over. Even if the vehicle didn’t leave the garage, dust and debris can stick to the paint.
If your vehicle left the garage, then winter driving can cause a huge amount of road grime, debris and salt to build up on your vehicle. Get rid of salt before spring starts. Allowing debris and grime to build up on your car can affect its paint and finish, while allowing salt to build up can lead to rust and other serious problems. Over winter, you should have rolled down the window an inch to allow air circulation and prevent moisture from building inside the cabin. If you did that, check for rodents that love to find their way into your car and make it their cozy home during the winter. This can wreak havoc if they chew wires. As a precaution you should have placed a ball of steel wool in the exhaust pipe opening and air inlet, laundry fabric sheets inside the cabin and trunk and moth balls around the outside perimeter of the car. Remember to remove all of those things in the spring. Spring is the perfect time to clean your car’s interior, so spend a day doing some spring cleaning.

Wow, now that’s a body shop!
Always put your baby, child in a car seat By Murray Green
Holding a child, even when travelling at slow speeds, isn’t safe when travelling in a vehicle. Since a baby has a large, heavy head and weak neck muscles it must be properly secured in a rear-facing car seat appropriate for the weight and height, according to Alberta Health Services. Use the car seat until your child is at least two years old or reaches the maximum weight or height limit for the rearfacing seat. Make sure you check the manufacturer’s manual. Always put your baby in the type of car seat recommended for their developmental stage. Car seats protect your child from injury when traveling in a vehicle. The law in Alberta says you must use them. It is recommended you use a rear-facing car seat as long as possible. Your preschooler may not be ready to move into a booster seat. When your child outgrows the rear-facing seat, they should move to a forward-facing car seat. Once a child has reached the maximum forward-facing weight or height limit of their car seat (as stated by the manufacturer), they should move into a booster seat. Once a child outgrows a forward-facing car seat, a booster seat is still needed. Adult seat belts don’t fit child-size bodies. Without a booster seat, the seat belt rides up on the child’s abdomen and neck, and can hurt them badly in a crash. All children under the age of 13 are safest riding in the back seat. A booster seat provides the best protection for an older child in a sudden stop or crash. A child is ready to ride in the vehicle with-
(4’9”) tall and between eight and 12 years of age. When in a boost-
out a booster seat when the vehicle seat belt fits properly. This is typically when a child is 145 cm
er seat, make sure the lap belt is snug and low across the child’s hips, never across the abdo-
men. The shoulder belt needs to be across the shoulder and the midpoint of the chest.

Know your vehicle symptoms By Lori Larsen
Knowing your vehicle well can be key in maintaining it and ensuring it lasts. Recognizing the way it drives and being aware of familiar noises is one thing, but understanding when your vehicle is telling you something is out of the ordinary can save, not only costly repairs, but possibly your life. The following are some symptoms your vehicle may display that you really should not ignore. If the check engine light comes on it could indicate a minor problem, such as a loose gas cap, but it could also indicate a more serious problem. If, after checking some fixable possibilities, the light still engages or begins flashing,
take it to a certified shop for a more through examination. Sudden low fuel economy could be a sign that your vehicle air filter is dirty or your spark plugs require cleaning or changing. But is can also mean your vehicle is in need of a tune up, especially if it is accompanied by your check engine light or unfamiliar sounds. Sounds that you are not familiar with such as a grinding in your transmission, squealing from your brakes, misfires or your engine struggling to start, or clunking sounds from your engine need to be checked by a certified mechanic shop immediately. If you vehicle suddenly
stalls or has trouble staying running you should have it checked. Signs of fluids leaks underneath your vehicle can mean serious problems and should never be ignored. Winter road conditions can be brutal on your vehicle and you may notice it doesn’t drive as smoothly after a long hard winter, however excessive vibrating while driving should be cause for concern and you should have it serviced. Some common causes of vibration include the tire alignment is off, brake rotors are wearing or the brake caliper is stuck. Steam or smoke coming from your vehicle should always cause you to be alarmed, with the excep-

tion of normal exhaust smoke. Steam from under the bonnet could indicate your engine is overheating and excessive exhaust smoke could mean a faulty exhaust system. If you notice your vehicle is more difficult to handle it could be a sign of a structural problem or it could be a less serious problem including misaligned wheels or power steering fluid leaks. Either way it is wise to have it checked.
you do shift gears it may be time for a service call. Repair or replace burned out headlight, taillights, brake lights and turn signals immediately. Other drivers should never have to guess if you are slowing, stopping, turning or where you are when driving while it is dark. Never ignore signs on the exterior of your vehicle either. A cracked windshield can obstruct the view of the driver and should be
If you notice when you drive in a certain gear in automatic the gear changes or the noise coming from the engine changes in pitch or starts to whine, your vehicle is struggling, underpowered, or doesn’t accelerate like it should, it could be a sign your transmission is slipping and should get immediate attention from a mechanic shop. If shifting gears isn’t as smooth as it used to be or you note a clunk when
replaced. Chips are a common occurrence in windshields, especially during the winter when gravel or sand is used on roadways. Having a chip filled as soon as you notice it can save the bigger cost of replacing the whole windshield. Knowing your car and what is normal and what seems out of place can help you to maintain it at its best and ensure a longer life expectancy, not to mention its easier on the pocketbook.

Braking for safety By Lori Larsen
Your vehicle’s braking system is one of the most important safety features and lives depend on whether or not your vehicle can brake when required. Regular maintenance on your vehicle’s braking system can help ensure they are there when you need them. The first tip on maintaining your vehicle braking system is to be aware of the amount of and type of braking you apply. Riding brakes or applying sudden heavy pressure to your brakes can cause unnecessary wear and tear on them. Being aware of traffic and road conditions ahead of time can save on your braking system and can assist in gentle application of brakes. The following are other suggestions for maintaining the health of your vehicle braking system. Begin by ensuring you brake fluid is clean and topped up. Brakes are hygroscopic which means they absorb and attract water, so it is especially important to maintain braking systems in the spring. Flushing the brake system is recommended every two years. Ensure the master cylinder is properly maintained and does not appear to have leaks. If you brakes appear spongy or there are leaks have a professional check them. The master cylinder creates the pressure that forces the brake f luid throughout the system. Brake line maintenance is also very important. Changing brake fluid will help the lines to last. If your see puddles near the line or wetness on the inside of the wheels when it is not wet outside, it may indicate a problem. Regularly check brake pads/shoes. In some vehicle it is easy to observe the wear on brake pads/shoes without removing the tire, however, others will require the removal of the tire. When checking brake pads/shoes ensure there is at least 5 mm on both, and look for even wear across each pad. Unless there are obvious warning signs (see below) pads/ shoes should be checked every 10,000 kilometres. The rotor is the metal disc that the brake pads press against when applying brakes. Check the rotors at the same time you check pads by looking for grooves, cracks or breaks. If the rotor is not perfectly round or has cracks or

Warning signs Some vehicles are equipped with built in warning systems such as an indicator light on the dash or a message on the vehicle LCD display panel that will warn about a problem with the braking system. For vehicles not equipped with electronic warnings other signs include squealing, chirping or grinding noises, signs of leaking f luids on
driveways or in garages, wobbling or vibrating when applying brakes, spongy or soft brake pedals, the vehicle pulling to one side when applying brakes or bouncing up and down when stopping and a burning smell while driving. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Funny short plays By Murray Green
Augustana drama Senior Showcase of Funny Shorts with director Kevin Sutley will be presenting works from senior students on April 5 to 7, shows begin at 7 p.m. Hike up your shorts and join Augustana’s Senior Showcase of Funny Shorts: a collection of hilarious one acts by Billy Aronson. “We will be showcasing six of the plays f rom A mer ica n the writer, that are all comedies. We were looking for plays that would g ive everyone in our company (senior drama class) a chance to have a lead role,” explained Kevin. “The seven students, plus three technical students, are in more than one of the plays. In fact, most are in three plays each,” shared Kevin. Each comedic one act (a total of six) will take you on an hilarious journey of rib-tickling delight through a wacky world of preposterous characters. In the play Reunions, former students attend a high school reunion. “Its like a 20-year reunion where everyone gets back together and brags about all of the things they have accomplished. People are trying to impress each other by telling how fantastic their life is and sharing the choices they are making,” said Kevin. “People start showing up that have jobs that are not the usual jobs. They are exciting. For example, a pirate shows up. Its the idea of how we set up exaggerations, but in this play it not an exaggeration. Its the joke about how exciting everyone’s life is. It reminds me of Facebook.” The community is invited to join the fun and attend the one-act plays. “It is very funny. It is six hilarious plays. It is a fun, funny group of plays done by senior students. It is for an audience of 14 years of age and up.” Other plays performed are Light Years, Part One: Freshman Year, Little Red Riding Hood, Night Rules, Little Duck and Negotiation.
