The Augustana Choir invites you to join them for Imagine… the spring concert of the auditioned chamber choir in the Faith and Life Chapel, University of Alberta Augustana Campus. The concert takes place on

Sunday, April 29 at 3:00 p.m. and features a collection of songs that will challenge you to use your imagination. You’ll be challenged to dream with Eric Whitacre’s “Leonardo Dreams of his Flying Machine”, a fantastical work that explores what it might be like inside the head of Leonardo da Vinci as he dreams about flying. In a completely different dream, you’ll reminisce in Sara Teasdale’s achingly poignant “Only in Sleep”. Stephen Chatman invites you to use your imagination as the choir explores prairie landscape and, in a piece the audience will certainly find most interesting, you’ll have to use your imagination to keep up with the choir as they use elements of choral-theatre to interpret Swedish composer Arne Mellnäs’ “Proverbs”. Tickets are available at the door: $20 for adults and $15 for seniors and students.

Video surveillance has become a popular and reasonably inexpensive way for people to keep tabs on their home and property and has become an effective tool used by the police to aid in investigations. Camrose Police Service introduces the fifth installment of the “Eyes on Camrose”, a police initiated community awareness program. The Security Camera Registry Program began in October 2016 and is another way for residents to help prevent crime. “Security cameras are a great way to keep ‘Eyes on Camrose’,” said Camrose Police Service crime p r e ve nt io n / c o m mu n it y relations Constable Kelly Bauer. “With the affordability of systems and the ease of installation, more and more businesses and homeowners are utilizing cameras to monitor their property.” Bauer noted that video cameras not only help prevent crime but images captured on video can also assist the police in investigations. The Camrose Police Service Security Camera registry is a program designed to encourage residents and business owners to register their video security cameras with the police service. “We are mostly interested in cameras that have an exterior view,” explained Bauer. “When we have your system added to our database, and if a crime occurs in your area, we could potentially utilize your security video to solve the crime.” Bauer related a specific incident of a criminal offence that was solved with the assistance of video surveillance. “This winter, in the middle of the night, a suspect decided he was going to steal fuel from two vehicles. The suspect crawled under two pick-up trucks and drilled holes in the tanks. The $25 theft of fuel turned into $2,500 in damage to the vehicles. “Thankfully, a homeowner had security cameras and police were able to utilize the video surveillance to prove the crime occurred and identify the suspect.” Bauer acknowledged that, had that homeowner not had security cameras in place, the crime would likely have not been solved. Whether the system is at a business or a private residence, you can help protect your property and your community by registering your security camera with the Camrose Police Service. Bauer by email at kbauer@camrose. ca or by telephone at 780672-4444. “By registering your camera, you will be taking an active role in crime prevention and investigation. You will be helping your community to keep ‘Eyes on Camrose’.” Eyes on Ca m rose continues to prov ide residents with initiatives aimed at increasing community awareness th rough citizen involvement. The f irst initiative is Citizens on Patrol, a volunteer prog ram where residents patrol the community throughout the day and night to assist in crime prevention and address community safety. Letters to the Editor Into the marketplace

I once took part in a Tai Chi class–a moving meditation practice well known in many parts of Asia. As an introduction to us chatty fidgety beginners, the Tai Chi instructor began with this statement. “Anyone can wear a saffron robe and go to the top of a mountain and meditate, and be grounded and centered and wise. What the world needs now is for us to come down from the mountaintop and go into the marketplace and be grounded and centred and wise.” I no longer remember the 108 Tai Chi moves, but I remember that statement. And I remember the powerful feeling of moving in unison with others doing the same centuries-old moves. ***

The world has changed since the Tai Chi instructor’s comment. I think it’s fair to say that in 2018, we need even more to be capable to go into whatever is happening in our world and be grounded and centred and wise. Our human species has created a perfect storm of crises and chaos. For the first time in our history, we are capable of destroying ourselves, if not by warfare, then by polluting earth so it can no longer sustain us. This isn’t about saving the earth. The earth will be fine. On several previous occasions, the earth has experienced cataclysmic events in which 95 per cent of species became extinct. The earth doesn’t need us or any species in order to survive and flourish. We, on the other hand, do need earth. Our species may have the technology to turn around our violence and pollution, but we don’t yet appear to have the collective maturity to make the required worldwide decisions and actions. So what does this have to do with the Tai Chi instructor? ***

Through many different traditions, many of us have learned practices that help bring peace into conflict, calm in the midst of stress, and help us see a higher vision and be able to think and act beyond our immediate emotions and desires. In the past few months, I’ve been part of a class in which several hundred of us learned practices that not only helped us connect with calm wisdom within us as individuals, but to experience something like a “collective mind” that we all were part of, but was bigger than all of us. It was like the relationship of an individual singer to the choir as a whole, or the relationship of a sports or work or community team member to the team as a whole. Our “collective mind” could conceive of solutions to intractable challenges. It could create possibilities beyond what any individual could think of or achieve, just as a choir can create sound beyond the capacity of any individual singer, and a team can accomplish results beyond the capacity of any individual team member.

Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. selected targets is going to resolve the problem of the Syrian government using chemicals. Maybe they can destroy their supply of these weapons. How does anyone know where those are being stored? Maybe some expert could write a letter and explain this to all of us.

Not violence

T he disastrous and unbelievable crash between a bus and a transport truck has struck me with sadness that I’m having trouble resolving. Saskatchewan is now in the forefront of the world. I was born in Saskatchewan and it will always be dear to me, although I have lived in two other provinces, Ontario and now Alberta for more than 50 years. When I was 15 years old, I passed through that intersection in someone else’s vehicle. That was many years ago, but I still remember the total flatness as I hitchhiked from Nipawin to my hometown east of Regina. What makes this accident so different? Is it because they are hockey players? Is it because of their ages and that they will never grow older? I know what I feel and I think that same feeling is worldwide. They represented the passion of hockey. They represented youth and vitality and were ready

I have read a news memo from 630 CHED announcing an attack against the Syrian government by the United States, France and United Kingdom. Now, I do understand that the Syrian government used chemical weapons against innocent people. This behavior should not be tolerated or ignored. Now, I am questioning whether this will be effective against a government who seems not to even care about it’s citizens. Will this government use human shields to be placed in these selected military spots? Now, I might not have all the details, which the leaders of these nations may have. I am not an expert on these matters. I am only wondering how many innocent people will be killed just because they are at the wrong place at the wrong time. Now, I do agree something has to be done. I just wonder how shooting missiles at certain

for whatever life would throw at them. But the worst of all is really the families left behind, the parents, the siblings and all of their individual families. This burdens me more than their deaths, wondering how I would deal with one of my great-grandsons in the same age group disappearing from my life. Even though this accident is heart-wrenching. I believe for everything that happens there is a reason. Look at the response from our entire country. Look at the response from nearly 100 countries in our world. I expected a response from the world was inevitable. But the number of countries and the generosity is amazing. I include myself in that. Why has this happened when we know about the thousands who have been killed in the civil war in Syria? Somehow it’s not the same. I really can’t fathom why. The positive physical things that have happened show that we help our neighbours: the organ donations, the extra blood transfusions and the support from all over. Will the people who share conflict all over the world learn anything from this? I doubt it. We now have a better view of the fact that there are very good people in our universe. Lew Goddard, Camrose

***

This isn’t a solution, but it can add to our repertoire. We need to continue our contemplative practices, or any practice that allows us to acknowledge our turmoil and find some place of peace. In times of turmoil, such practices are even more essential as part of self-care and part of being able to access wisdom that’s greater than all of us. We also need to get more and more adept at taking that kind of energy, wisdom and skill into whatever is our “marketplace.” And we need to be wise enough to know when we’re not able to do that, and must lean on others who can support us and tap into a larger “collective mind” and higher wisdom. ***

In a week when I’m impacted by both personal circumstances and events in the world, I’m asking…how can I best calm my turmoil and find a place of peace and strength? Whether or not I’m able do that, how do I tap into “collective minds” and higher powers that can achieve more than any individual? So…when you’re in turmoil, what do you do as answers to those or similar questions? ***

Novice Vikings claim league crown By Murray Green

The Camrose Vikings novice hockey team won a hard fought battle against the CR Knights to capture the gold banner for the 2017-18 season. The Vikings entered the playoffs as the third place team. However, they managed to make it to the final series undefeated.

Game one of the final series resulted in a 3-0 win over the Knights. Game two had the Vikings come up just one goal short, resulting in a 3-2 loss. After an intense third game, requiring one overtime period and finally a shootout, the Vikings secured the win they had fought so hard for.

“During the season these young players developed tremendously; coming together and really learning to play as a team. This was a well-deserved victory for the Vikings who put a lot of hard work and heart into the season,” said Lauren Hoyme, a parent of a team member.

Logan Boulet of the Humboldt Broncos took a tragic bus accident that killed 16 people and injured others, and turned it into a positive. He filled out a donor card to donate his organs two weeks prior to the accident that, in turn, saved six other lives. You can save lives too. Camrose Registry will be holding an organ donation information session on Friday, April 27 with two guests from the 2nd Chance Trail Ride (GoodHearts Foundation) sharing their story of donating organs to others in order to save lives. Join the guests along with Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA Bruce Hinkley, City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer and Camrose Registry manager Karen Dammann to learn more on organ donations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The 2nd Chance Trail Ride is a non-profit organization born in 2012 after five like-minded individuals received a double lung transplant. This crew of gentlemen wanted to create an organization that promoted Organ and Tissue Donation, as well as a community, to assist individuals going through the transplant recipient process. The organization and event’s purpose is to encourage organ and tissue donations, give thanks to those who have donated and support

individuals going the transplant journey. This week is Organ and Tissue Donating Awareness Week in Alberta. “It is easy to donate organs. You have to fill out an Alberta Organ and Tissue Donor Care Card the next time you renew your licence,” said Karen. “If you want to donate now and your licence is not due, you simply come in any time and we will fill out the information. You will receive a card and it will be added to your licence the next time you renew.” A normal week in Alberta has about 450 people filling out donor cards. However, since the Humboldt accident, the number has swelled to 3,071 a week as people are made more aware on how they can save lives. “We all can save lives by filling out a card. All you have to do is go to the registry,” added Karen. The annual trail ride near Elk Point raises money for organ transplants and passes it on to the University of Alberta Hospital to go towards the cost of providing transplants. Travel the historic Iron Horse Trail from Lindbergh to Elk Point on horse or wagon as they raise Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness and support those going through the organ transplant process. The seventh annual event is on May 12 this year.

The University of Alberta Faculty of Nursing and the Hospice Society of Camrose and District and Covenant Health Network of Excellence in Seniors and Wellness, celebrated the launch and transition of the Nav-Care project in Camrose and Killam, during an event held on April 4 at the Camrose Resort Casino. The overall goal of the Nav-Care program is to improve the quality of life for adults with serious illness, who are living at home. These individuals often do not qualify for home-based nursing care and yet have unmet needs and heavy symptom related issues that result in a poor quality of life. University of Alberta associate dean of research for the nursing faculty, Dr. Wendy Duggleby, welcomed guests, then spoke briefly on the Nav-Care initiative for Camrose and Killam. “I want to take you back to October 2016, when our trained volunteers started visiting older persons with chronic illnesses in Camrose and Killam,” said Duggleby. “They were helping them connect, access resources and engage with the community for over a year. The project was funded by the Covenant Health Network of Excellence in Seniors Health and Wellness Initiatives.” After opening remarks from Dr. Duggleby, University of Alberta Augustana professor of political studies and director of the Alberta Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities, Dr. Lars Hallström, introduced City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer, who welcomed guests on behalf of city council and Camrose County council members present and spoke about the importance of such vital programs to communities. “This project is another example of collaboration between the university and the medical facilities and the folks involved in the medical profession. In just a matter of time it will be recognized in other areas and we will be acknowledged as a leader

for people who are aging in rural areas.” Covenant Health senior operating officer seniors care and environmental supports, Linda Chow-Turner, brought greetings on behalf of Covenant Health. “As people involved in seniors services and care in Alberta, I am confident you will agree that the timing of this particular project could not be better. By 2030, one in five Albertans will be over the age of 65.” Chow-Turner said that Covenant Health interacts with thousands of seniors every day and witnesses their struggles, such as loss of independence, feelings of isolation, fear of being a burden, resulting in funding to ensure these concerns are addressed, adding that Nav-Care was one of the projects funded. A video, featuring interviews with program founders, community coordinators, the volunteer coordinator and Nav-Care volunteer and client teams, demonstrated the success and importance of the program. The program

The Nav-Care program began in rural Alberta around 2011, with Barb Paset and Dr. Duggleby, gathering information at focus groups from people with chronic illness, as to what they (patients) felt would be most beneficial in their lives. “They said navigators,” recalled Dr. Duggleby. “And they wanted them to come from their own communities.” Duggleby added that the focus group participants said they weren’t always totally aware of the resources available within their own communities. As a result of the research, a curriculum for training rural volunteer navigators to help seniors was developed. A pilot was conducted in British Columbia, then Camrose and Killam came on as the first sites in Alberta. Wanita Toews, from Camrose, was brought on board as the nurse navigator. Toews selected both the volunteers and clients in Camrose and Killam, met with each client, then

selected the most suitable volunteer navigator to individual clients. The volunteer navigators were given a two day workshop that addressed five basic competencies: screening, advocating, facilitating community connection, coordinating access to services and resources and promoting active engagement. Maintaining client confidentiality was also stressed. Navigators learned listening skills and to begin the visit by asking the client what was most important to them today. Volunteer navigators are taught not to try to solve their clients’ health problems, but to navigate them to the resources that can help them. A guide listing all the resources available within the clients’ communities was also created. More often than not the volunteer navigators became that connection to the community and a much needed visit within the clients’ homes. Program future

After the year-long pilot program, the goal of sustaining the Nav-Care program was met when the Hospice Society of Camrose and District took over both the Camrose and Killam initiatives. Camrose Primary Care

Network executive director and Hospice Society of Camrose and District chairperson, Stacey Strilchuk, shared insight on the collaboration of the NavCare program with the Hospice Society and moving forward. “I have a lot of good mentors, here in this room, that have taught me a lot about palliative and end-of-life care and the key factor is not just about death and dying, but all too often it is about the preamble to that, quality of life, living your best life.” Strilchuk noted that how the Nav-Care program focuses on the importance of ensuring quality of life, for not only palliative and end of life individuals, but chronic disease patients as well. “The key for the integration of Nav-Care and Hospice is spreading and integrating successful service. We had this program that was very successful for Camrose and Killam and now we have this great opportunity for spread and scale. “We now have an opportunity to engage with an individual, family member or caregiver and we can do some of that strengthening of information and integration. We can make those connections.” Strilchuk spoke specifically about the inte-

gration of Nav-Care and Hospice volunteers. “The Hospice volunteers are going off and doing their own very important training for Hospice Society. We also looked at the training that the Nav-Care volunteers were getting and the opportunities for integration, building capacity for both volunteers, merging the volunteers into one and enhancing their skill sets just made sense.” Strilchuk spoke about the relationship between Nav-Care and the Hospice, noting in particular the importance of the leadership component and how all players in the development and success of the Nav-Care program shared their own visions, ultimately coming together to create local solutions for local needs. On a closing note Duggleby said, “We are going to use you (Camrose and Killam Nav-Care program) as an example, as we spread this across Canada.” At present, 11 more sites across Canada have been established with funding for 15 additional sites. Visit the Camrose Hospice website at camrosehospice.org/ for more information on the Nav-Care initiative.

National Volunteer Week ran from April 15 to 21 under the theme “Celebrate the Value of Volunteering– building conf idence, competence, connections and community.” Canada has over 12.7 million volunteers who assist in making the country and our communities better places to live. Organizations around the community such as Camrose Police Service and Camrose and District Victim Services Unit took time to thank all the volunteers who give of their time, skills, experience and passion to help others in our community. “It is National Volunteer Week and the Camrose Police Service would like to thank our community of volunteers (yes, that is you!),” said Camrose Police Service Crime Prevention /Community Relations Constable Kelly Bauer on

behalf of Camrose Police Service. “We consistently have citizens reporting suspicious activity which is paying dividends in keeping our community safe. There were two incidents in the past few days that stand out as excellent examples of someone who volunteered to step up.” Bauer added that it is volunteers who assist in making the Eyes on Camrose program work. “These were just two of several instances where citizens in our community were alert and contacted police. We thank our community of volunteers for helping keep our city safe. We couldn’t do it without your Eyes on Camrose!” Our community is comprised of numerous more examples of residents who step up to the plate and selflessly give back to the community on their own time and in their own way.

Reconsidering reconciliation

Canadian news is often filled with the latest updates on the quasi-criminal actions, racist and sexist pronouncements of US politicians. Recently, Canadians have had to look their own racism, sexism and criminality straight in the eye. In 2016, Colten Boushie, a 22-year-old from Red Pheasant First Nation, was brutally shot by Gerald Stanley. On Feb. 9, the jury – from which all potentially Indigenous jurors had been excluded – acquitJoseph Wiebe, Religion, Augustana ted Stanley even of the lesser Campus, University charge of manslaughter. In of Alberta 2014, Tina Fontaine, a 15-yearold from the Sagkeeng First Nation who was supposed to be in the care of provincial child services, was bound in a blanket and thrown into Winnipeg’s Red River. On Feb. 22, the man accused of killing her was acquitted by the jury on the grounds of insufficient evidence. The public mourning and protest that followed these acquittals both galvanized and polarized public debate about ongoing racism and colonialism in Canada. Indigenous writers such as Gina Starblanket and Dallas Hunt have penned powerful critiques of settler colonialism in newspapers, yet social media has been awash in unabashedly racist comments, including those of an RCMP officer who posted on Facebook that Colten Boushie “got what he deserved.” While some proclaim that the verdicts have shattered efforts at “reconciliation”, others, including an interdenominational group of bishops, issued statements about the need to “work for reconciliation and peace among all people.” With its history in Christian rituals of absolution, reconciliation is a concept that many Canadians find comforting. The term came to greater prominence with the 2015 publication of the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Both Christian and non-Christian settlers in Canadian seem to desire reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and yet injustice remains. Why? In short: land. The TRC report largely skirts concerns about land restitution. Similarly, the bishops’ statement ignores the colonialism and dispossession at the heart of issues of injustice and racism in Canada. If settlers want to respect Indigenous self-determination then they have to begin by tackling the question of land. In this context, it was bewildering to find a personal essay published in The Globe and Mail that celebrated settlers buying Manitoba land without awareness of Indigenous presence. “Buying into my Mennonite roots” was a nostalgic ode to Mennonites’ “long history” of buying up land that lies “beyond the fringe of civilization.” Celebrating Mennonite men as farmers who transformed the “wilderness,” the author Cameron Dueck erased a longer history of Indigenous peoples who still live on the land that he called “swampy,” “virgin,” and “cheap.” In reality, Mennonites settled on the long inhabited territory of Treaty 1 and Treaty 2. Scholars of the Mennonite experience in Western Canada are hardly surprised by this juxtaposition, in which the ongoing violence of settler colonialism was blithely ignored in the celebration of settler ingenuity. The Mennonites came to Manitoba from Russia in the 1870s, attracted by government promises of “free land” which they turned into tightly-knit farming communities shaped by commitments to pacifism, adult baptism and family. Mennonites are indeed people of the land. Mennonite religious identity has found expression through relations to place in villages, farms, and gardens. Clearly, Mennonites – or any other group – should not deny this part of their history. But it is the responsibility of all settlers to know the deeper stories of their land. Being treaty people requires challenging the falsehoods seeded by stories that tell of “civilization” emerging from tamed wilderness; it also requires listening to and reading the words of Indigenous peoples. Reading books like Maria Campbell’s Half-Breed, Eden Robinson’s Son of a Trickster, or Harold Johnson’s Two Families is one place to start. The voices of Indigenous journalists and writers such as Connie Walker, Angela Sterritt and Alicia Elliott are also rising. Reconciliation may not be a concept robust enough to bring more just relations among treaty people into being, but it has played an important role in provoking public debate – both productive and malicious – that has brought a greater range of voices into the stories we hear.

John McDermott is a Scottish-Canadian tenor best known for his rendering of the songs “Danny Boy” and “Loch Lomond.” Born in Glasgow, Scotland, John moved with his family to Toronto in 1965. Growing up in a musical family, his only formal musical training was at St. Michael’s Choir School in Toronto in 1971 and 1972. “I’ve been performing for more than 25 years and have 36 recordings, so the Camrose audience can expect a good mix of songs with traditional songs and old favourites,” said John. “People are expecting songs like ‘Danny Boy’

“My family background is Scottish and Irish, so the songs are a nice mix of both because that is what I was raised on. It’s a nice way of saying I like to drink, but don’t like to pay for it,” he laughed. “It gives me a nice blend of traditional music. Then I add a Canadian mix of contemporary music, mostly from the east coast. I certainly add some Canadian content with some songs by Bruce Cockburn. We have a lot of Canadian songs in the Christmas show.” Starting in 1988, he has regularly been called upon to sing the national anthems at Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs games. From 1984 through 1992, he worked as a circulation representative for the Toronto Sun; Conrad Black heard him singing at company parties. Black, along with other executives, financed McDermott’s independent recording of “Danny Boy” in 1992, which was picked up and released in North America by EMI Music Canada. Following this unexpected success, McDermott decided to pursue a professional singing career. “I have two other musicians with me on tour. One is probably the finest guitar player in Canada, Jason Fowler. Jason has been with me for about 17 years now. Mark Lalama is another great independent Canadian musician on keyboards and accordion. He is a wonderful player, so it will be the three of us,” shared John. He performed his first concert at the Rebecca Cohn Theatre October 1993 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. From there he continued to tour the rest of Canada, performing as an

opening act for The Chieftains. Throughout 1994, he went on a tour of Australia and New Zealand, following the great success of “Danny Boy”, which had been ranked number one on the charts there and achieved triple platinum in New Zealand. Next, in 1995, he went on a tour of Britain with The Seekers. He relishes the opportunity to sing in places he hasn’t been to before. “It is much more preferable. I don’t mind the large halls, but I like it better when I can get more intimate with the audience with smaller crowds. With The Irish Tenors it was great, it was fun, but now I prefer the smaller halls of under

1,000 people when I am touring. I thoroughly enjoy that. I feel more connected to the audience and almost the entire audience is up close,” explained John. At this point in his career he is recognized internationally, so he started to tour regularly as a solo act. He also recently released a double DVD called All Those Years last month. “It is a compilation of documentary and concert films from early in my career. It is from 1995 and 2010 with songs, interviews and show put together for PBS, but was never released.” Continued on page 14

Share your wisdom by Celebrating Seniors Day. Seniors in our community make a difference every single day. Seniors help their friends, families, groups and organizations and they give their expertise and time by visiting, helping and volunteering. They also boost our local economy by bringing family and friends to visit them. By being proactively involved in our community and sharing their lifetime of knowledge, seniors benefit everyone through their connections and hard work. One way seniors can connect is through our local seniors’ centre society. This centre gives seniors with common interests a place to meet and take part in activities together. Another way seniors can connect is to come out to local events and venues to participate in activities while meeting new faces and sharing stories. The Province of Alberta designates the first week of June each year to celebrate our seniors. Once again, the Camrose and District Seniors Coalition has helped to organize and bring forward community support to allow Celebrating Seniors day to occur. Last year we celebrated the Canada 150 anniversary alongside Alberta Seniors week. Previous years have brought comedians, radio talk show hosts, singers, and humorists along with local community program professionals sharing their tips and tricks of the trade for seniors’ life long learning. This year we are celebrating our seniors on June 8 at the Norsemen Inn. This day will start with a morning exercise session and presentation from Camrose Primary Care about Active Aging. We will have displays for your perusal and a wonderful luncheon. Completing the afternoon, we will invite Sylvia Wold who will present “Aging like Fine Wine or Whining While I Age.” Sylvia will motivate, educate, and entertain us, speaking with common sense and humour – fully believing; “Even the Serious Stuff Can Be Fun!” She teaches with humour and warmth; easily setting rapport with everyone. Tickets will be sold until May 30 at CDSS second floor, 4516-54 Street and at Service Options for Seniors #102 4909A-48 Street. Call 780672-0141 or 780-672-4131 for more information.

Bethany to commemorate its roots By Chantal Beesley, The Bethany Group

In 1922, the Lutheran Church in Bawlf recognized the plight of elderly immigrants in the area. The seniors had no families and weren’t able to take care of themselves, their own homes or farms. In Lutheran tradition, the church and parish decided to take action, purchasing the vacant hospital and turning it into a home for the elderly – the Bethany Old People’s Home. These are the roots of The Bethany Group and though the organization has grown and moved, it still holds true to its origins. The home was popular, especially as the economic downturn took its toll. To run the home, a Board of Charities was created who oversaw the operations and residency. While rents were low, the board also relied on the communities/parishes to support residents, especially those from outside of the Bawlf area. They also received land and farms to help support operations. Quite often, the farms weren’t as successful as everyone hoped and was in turn sold in order to continue funding the home. The staff included a matron who took on the duties of caring for the seniors, including cooking, cleaning and a variety of other tasks. She was helped by a few other staff members who worked together. Around 10 years before their move to Camrose, the board started looking for a new home. More and more seniors were approaching them for care and the home couldn’t house everyone. Their search for a new home wasn’t just centred on Camrose, but also included

Edmonton and Saskatchewan. Finally, in the 40s, the board made a deal with the Town of Camrose to purchase land and begin construction on the Sunset Home with a well attended opening in the late summer of 1949. In August of that year, 17 residents from the home in Bawlf made the move to their new home in Camrose. A new board was created with some of the original members to guide the expanded services in Camrose. Interestingly enough, a few members from the old board were appointed to a new board in Saskatchewan, in 1950, to establish a home for the aged there. The Bethany Old People’s Home in Bawlf found yet another purpose as a school, housing three classrooms until the new school opened in 1950. It wasn’t until 2012 that The Bethany Group returned to Bawlf, when it assumed management of Sanden Court. While it

may not have operated in the community for many years, it never forgot its roots. The building itself may be long gone, but the spot where the Bethany Old People’s Home was located has been marked with a commemorative monument on the corner of the Bawlf school property (the corner of Alberta Avenue and King Street). On Friday, April 27 at 1 p.m., The Bethany Group will be joined by the school and several dignitaries to officially commemorate the monument. Afterwards, everyone will gather at the Lutheran Church for cake and refreshments. Residents from Bawlf, Camrose and the surrounding area are invited to join us as we celebrate our roots. If the weather does not hold up, the official ceremony will be moved to the Lutheran Church. For more information, contact Chantal at 780-679-3066.

Show administrative professionals they are appreciated Submitted

Business owners and bosses and high-level executives may have their names on placards or monogrammed stationery, but the most successful businesses tend to be those in which the entire staff, from the company president to administrative pro-

fessionals and so on, works together. Administrative professionals, sometimes referred to as “admins,” handle everything from spreadsheet generation to preparing schedules. Admins are often the unsung heroes of the workplace, and while they may

Thank you, Dena …for keeping things running so smoothly around our office. We always appreciate your efficiency and friendly smile!

not receive much fanfare, without the continued efforts of admins, businesses may grind to a halt. In recognition of the roles they play, administrative professionals have been honored during a special week each April for the past 60 years. Called Secretary’s Day upon its inception in 1952, the holiday was later expanded and the name changed to incorporate all of the employees who play pivotal administrative rolls in companies big and small. Managers and business owners may choose their employees, but the following ideas can breathe fresh life into festivities and help boost employee morale even further. Spring for coffee. Many employees require a caffeine buzz to get them through their busy days. The old pot in the break room may not deliver the best brews these days, and you can give employees another coffee fix to help them perk up. Check to see if independent coffee chains or even franchised businesses have to-go carafes. If not, consider purchasing a coffeehouse-inspired coffee maker, complete with the capabilities to make cappuccino and lattés. Give the gift of time. What worker couldn’t use a few extra days off? Show gratitude by renegotiating vacation and personal time schedules with administrative professionals. Be openminded to alternate work scheduled if they may keep employees happy and better able to serve the company. Show your appreciation through letters or certificates. Professional-looking certificates are easy to come by because they can be produced right in the office with some desktop publishing software. Some office-supply stores also may carry preprinted certifi-

cates. A heartfelt thank-you letter also is something that admins may appreciate, as it shows employees their efforts are not being overlooked. Present tickets to a game or a show. Many supervisors are given perks, such as

free tickets to popular sporting events or other sources of entertainment at nearby venues. Administrative professionals do a lot to keep companies afloat and operating smoothly.

The automotive section of

Great looking 1934 Ford coupe moves to Camrose On Easter weekend this exceptional 1934 Ford Coupe, painstakingly restored over 27 years by a Coquitlam resident, was carefully driven by fellow Early Ford V-8 club member Les Henderson, into the back of a 28-foot enclosed car haul trailer. This prized jewel of the automotive community from the lower mainland of British Columbia, was off on the next journey of its reincarnated life to a devoted vintage Ford owner in Camrose. It was the 2014 article for Driving, written by talented automotive writer Alyn Edwards, that convinced Ron Pilger that if he could have just one collector car in the world it would be the 1934 Ford 3-Window coupe owned by Joyce and Ross Blewett. The article and accompanying photos depicted the obvious attention to detail during the lengthy restoration process. After numerous article re-reads and a few days had passed, a phone call was made to Ross to pick his brain about the biggest challenges he encountered during the restoration of the coupe he’d bought 30-plus years prior. The talented restorer was generous with his time and provided great information. The call ended with Ron’s thought: “Please keep me in mind should you ever decide to sell your car.” In fall 2017, a letter came from the Blewett’s; a formal check-in with Pilger to see if interest in the car was sincere. Over a series of calls and other dialogue over the fall and winter of 2017-18 Ross and Joyce were accurately convinced that the car would be going to a home where it would be treasured, used as Ross himself would, and where the purchase intent was pure. Six months later a deal was made! The transaction was completed solely based on Mr. Edwards enticing story and the perfection of the work by Ross as described by contacting other “car guys” from the area. The Blewett’s daughter, Nancy, had gone to the trouble to locate and print

copies of cherished photos of the ‘34 from the day back in 1986 that Ross had bought and brought home the 3-Window. The photos showed that the complete, running car had been totally disassembled for a ground-up restoration. Only car restorers will understand the importance and value of pictures such as these. It had taken Ross and friends several truck and trailer trips to haul home the body, frame, running gear and hundreds of parts that had been kept in storage for the well-intentioned rebuild. The odometer on this beautiful old Ford shows a mere 50 miles has been put on the once-againnew 84-year-old auto. It features an extremely rare Columbia overdrive transmission. The interior, glass, top and rumble seat, are flawless. Other Ford approved accessories on this high-point car include: original chromed grey-

hound radiator cap, folding luggage rack, dual temperature gauge, grill guard, whitewall tires, Kelsey Hayes bent-spoked wheels and revolutionary for the era, ashtray radio. With the trailer door open and the darkness of night not far off, Les boosted the 34’s low-on-charge battery and the 221 cubic inch, 85 LB engine purred to life. Landon Pilger (Ron’s son) videoed the moment. Karen Henderson captured still photos to document the transaction for the newsletter of the Vancouver Chapter of the Early Ford V-8. The car was headed east to its new home. Dry roads and better Alberta weather cannot come soon enough for the new owner of this grand old Ford. Nor can cruising and car shows this spring. The undisputable talent of Ross will be back of mind, yet front and centre, on every outing. The first show and

shine of the season will be held in Bawlf on May 12. It is the first ever car show in the community. To enter

your vehicle in the show and shine call the village office at 780-373-3797.

Stolen batteries lead to charges April 20

Camrose Police Service was advised by a business in the east end industrial area that they had several vehicle batteries stolen from their compound overnight. At 8 a.m. staff at Peavey Mart contacted police when a suspicious male brought in several

batteries on their exchange program. Police immediately attended, but the male fled when the transaction wasn’t going as smoothly as he had anticipated. In the parking lot police located a female sitting inside a pickup truck, which contained the stolen batteries. The female was arrested and

the vehicle was searched resulting in police locating break-in tools and a quantity of methamphetamine. The 38-year-old from Leduc was charged with Break and Enter, Theft, Possession of Stolen Property, Possession of Break-in Tools and Possession of a controlled substance.

Aunt Martha likes to talk from the back seat Soon she will be able to tell your car where to go Voice technology is coming down the road for self-driving cars. It sounds like science fiction but in reality it’s not too far away. Yet, even with all these incredible changes, there will always be the occasional “oopsie.” The more Aunt Martha talks, the bigger the chance for an “oopsie.” If an “oopsie” does happen, you need to find a great body shop able to fix your high-tech vehicle, and it just so happens there’s one right here in Camrose. The Auto Shoppe is the only factory certified collision repair shop for miles around. That means your vehicle is in good hands. The highly trained professionals at the Auto Shoppe can take out the “oopsies” while keeping the scientific technology running smoothly. BRCF ramps up donation to museum Submitted

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded grants to the Donalda and District Museum Society. One grant is from income from the Donalda and District Museum Fund, established to support Museum operations. The other, from the Battle River Community Foundation’s Community Funds, is for assistance with the construction of a ramp to the historic bank building in Donalda. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects and facilities, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communi-

ties and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $5,445,000 to support community programs and projects like those at the Donalda and District Museum.

Submitted Battle River Community Foundation board chair Vivianne Grue presents the cheques to Darlene Tantrum, Museum board chair, while Marlene Conibear, treasurer, and Rebecca Hatch, museum manager, look on.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.
