Keep safety in mind when towing By Murray Green

When spring arrives and you want to start removing extra vehicles from your property, or you need to move a breakdown, keep safety in mind. “When you can, call professionals to move your vehicles. Tow trucks, or vehicles that are doing the towing should be larger or more powerful than the one you are going to tow,” said a member of the qualified towing team at Any Time Towing and Recovery. Back in the day a simple rope or chain was used to move a car. However, often the accidents occurred with snapping metals that were dangerous. Use proper towing recovery straps and check the label for the amount of weight the straps can tow. Attach straps to tow hooks or the frame. Do not use items that can be pulled off such as bumpers. Use towing straps that are at least 20 feet long. Align the towing vehicle in as a straight of a line as possible to avoid pulling sideways, which is more dangerous. A 10 degree rule is a good guide. Always keep others away from the towing area in case of mishaps. If the vehicle recovery takes place on or near a roadway, you must implement a traffic warning or traffic control system. That means flashers, reflectors, flares and/or cones. If you can, clear out mud, sand, or snow from under the stuck vehicle and in front of the tires in the direction of the pull. Lay out the recovery strap between the two vehicles and loop the strap onto a tow hook bolted to the vehicle frame or put the loop on a shackle, which is properly pinned to a frame mounted hitch rated for recovery. For added safety, use an old coat or blanket around the weakest area in case of a breakage in the towing line. The pulling vehicle should accelerate slowly until it has tension in the strap and provide a sustained pull. Never jerk the line. Once the slack is taken up, the stuck vehicle likewise applies acceleration in low gear to assist the pulling car. Avoid spinning tires as much as possible. If the towed vehicle doesn’t run, then put in neutral and steer the wheels. If the tow is not in a straight line, advise each other in advance of the direction it should be going. SHI 2018 – Page 12

“If at any point you feel unsafe about the procedure, call a certified tow truck recovery unit,” said a member of Any Time. Only use a winch if you are properly trained in its use. Other obstacles need to be considered such as steep terrain that have additional hazards including the danger of the recovering vehicle losing traction and sliding downhill as well as the increased load created when pulling a vehicle uphill. Mud also increases the load, so check the weight amounts on your recovery straps. Prior to towing, call on your insurance professionals to receive guidelines on what is covered if you are doing your own towing. Often flatbed trucks are better for moving vehicles than standard tow trucks, especially if it is a speciality car. If your vehicle is a hybrid or an electric car, then proper training needs to be in place before even considering towing. Whether due to a breakdown or an accident, when you’re stranded on the side of the road, you need quick, dependable, quality roadside assistance. It is always a good idea to call professionals when they are available.

Solar energy will save you money By Murray Green

There are many reasons why homeowners go solar, but improving the environment and cutting energy costs are the most common. Many people are aware that solar is a great home efficiency upgrade and are eager to reduce their carbon footprint while also improving property value. Whether your motivations for going solar are economic, environmental, or personal, this sizable list of solar power benefits will have something for everyone. Solar panels are installed on the roof of the home. These photovoltaic (PV) cells convert sunlight into direct current (DC) power. An inverter converts DC electricity from the solar array to the AC electricity found within the home. The inverter then feeds electricity into the electrical distribution system. The bidirectional metre keeps track of both the energy imported from the grid and the energy exported to the grid. Savings and export credits are then reflected on your electricity bill. Agricultural installations can also help on the farm. Your home, farm, or business remains connected to the utility grid to supply you with electricity when you need to draw more power than your system is providing, such as at night. Solar panels can drastically reduce or even eliminate your electric bills Whether you’re a homeowner, business, or nonprofit, electricity costs can make up a large portion of your monthly expenses. With a solar panel system, you’ll generate power for your system’s entire life cycle. Even if you don’t produce 100 per cent of the energy you consume, solar will reduce your utility bills and you’ll still save a lot of money. “Solar panels aren’t an expense–they’re one of the best ways to invest, with returns rivaling those of more traditional investments like stocks and bonds. Thanks to substantial electricity bill savings, the average homeowner pays off their solar panel system in a reasonable time. You can get payback in 10 years on a ground mounted system and a roof mount payback is about 12 years,” said local solar expert Greg Arends. One of the most clear cut benefits of solar panels is the ability to hedge utility prices. In the past 10 years, residential electricity prices have gone up by an average of three per cent annually. By investing in a solar energy system now, you can fix your electricity rate and protect against unpredictable increases in electricity costs. If you’re a business or homeowner with fluctuating cash SHI 2018 – Page 22

Solar Harvest installs panels on a house in Creekview.

flow, going solar also helps you better forecast and manage your expenses. Multiple studies have found that homes equipped with solar energy systems have higher property values and sell more quickly than non-solar homes. Appraisers are increasingly taking solar installations into consideration as they value homes at the time of a sale, and as home buyers become more educated about solar, demand for properties equipped with solar panel systems will continue to grow. The sun is a near-infinite source of energy and a key component of achieving energy independence. By increasing our capacity to generate electricity from the sun, we can also insulate our country from price fluctuations in global energy markets. Solar is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. Buildings are responsible for 38 per cent of all carbon emissions and going solar can significantly decrease that number. A typical residential solar panel system will eliminate three to four tons of carbon emissions each year—the equivalent of planting over 100 trees annually. Sustainability and corporate social responsibility are important components of an organization’s culture and values. They also produce bottom line results. Increasingly, consumers and communities are recognizing and rewarding businesses that choose to operate responsibly. Businesses are finding that “green” credentials are a powerful driver of consumer purchasing decisions, creating goodwill and improving business results. Companies quickly are realizing the social and economic benefits of adopting solar power. As early adopters pull ahead of the competition, many companies are exploring solar power as a way to keep up.

Siding is the protective cladding attached to the exterior walls of your home available in an extensive variety of materials, colours, styles and textures to suit, not only the climate for different areas, but homeowners’ tastes as well. When it comes to choosing a siding, options include aluminum, wood, vinyl, brick, stucco, cedar shingle, fibre cement, seamless steel and liquid siding (vinyl-like compound sprayed directly onto your home). Some of the trends with exterior home siding include the following. Mixing siding materials which adds interest. In some instances, that may mean adding a high end accents such as rock or brick, or it could simply mean a combination of complimentary colours. Sustainability and eco-friendliness are playing a big role in the trends of siding and durability and low maintenance are still very much in the forefront when it comes to choosing a siding. Like any other part of your home regular upkeep of the siding will not only help to maintain curb appeal but may save you in costly repairs. Inspection

Begin by annually inspecting your home’s siding for holes, cracks, wear and tear, excessive dirt and loose boards, bricks or strips. Determine if there is any fading, rotting, rusting or warping Inspection should also be conducted after any major storms accompanied by pelting snow, rain, hail or strong winds. Any damage should be repaired immediately saving you from further problems. Cleaning

Your home’s siding should be cleaned thoroughly at least twice a year with a garden hose or power washer. Weather and normal wear and tear can have an affect on the lifespan of your siding. Any foreign material stuck to your siding can trap moisture and induce the onset of mildew and eventual rot. Respect it

Using caution around your home’s exterior can help to reduce damage done lawn mowers, weedeaters or vehicles. Caution children to be careful when shooting hoops or hockey pucks in and around your home. Place outdoor grills, garden torches and firepits a safe distance away from your home’s siding. Vinyl siding can easily melt under that intense heat causing unsightly warps, holes and even fires. Treat it

Wood siding needs to be treated every five years or so and if you live in an area of extreme climate conditions, you may need to treat your siding as much as every two to three years. If you notice rust on aluminum siding, remove it by gently scraping it off then cover it with a sealant. Painted wood or metal sidings should be further checked for chipping, wear or peeling, repainting any damaged areas immediately. Repainting entire wood siding should be every three to seven years, aluminum siding every five years and stucco siding every five to six years. The old adage goes, first impressions are everything. So put your home’s best foot forward and stun them with curb appeal. SHI 2018 – Page 26

Take special care of your lawn By Murray Green

A healthy lawn not only contributes to your property value and the overall appearance of your neighborhood, it provides a natural, safe surface where your family can play and relax. Don’t cut too low. After cutting the lawn you should have about 2.5 to three inches left. Mowing short weakens the root system and gives weeds a chance to compete with the grass. It also avoids clumps. As a general rule experts say to remove only one third of the leaf with each mowing. So if you mow to three inches, you can let the grass grow to 4.5 inches. If you mow at 1.5 inches, you’ll need to cut when the grass grows to 2.75 inches. The shorter you mow, the more frequently you’ll need to mow your lawn to keep to the one-third rule. The longer between mowings, the less times you have to fill the recycle bin. Alter the pattern each time if you can. For example, go north-south, east-west, clockwise, counter-clockwise or diagonally. This will cut more leaf surface on weeds that may tend to lean in the direction of mowing and may help the grass compete with them. It also reduces soil compaction and turf wear from the wheels. Remember to sharpen your mower blades at least once a year. Dull mower blades hack-off, rather than cut grass blades. The torn leaves give the lawn whitish tips and may leave it more vulnerable to disease problems. Save yourself some work by not bagging every time you mow. If you SHI 2018 – Page 34

only cut one third of the leaf under dry conditions, the clippings will fall evenly on the soil surface. A mulching mower will further chop-up the clippings, which will help speed-up the decomposition process. Grass clippings are about 85 per cent water and don’t contain lignin. The soil microbes are able to breakdown leaf clippings more readily than they can decompose thatch. Clippings decompose and return nitrogen and other nutrients to the lawn. The decomposition is slower in cool weather. So the further north you live, the more you’ll need to monitor the build-up of clippings. Don’t water too often, but deeply to encourage deep roots. It’s difficult to say how much water to apply since it depends on soil type, species of grass, mowing height, temperature, wind and other factors. Generally, one inch is considered an adequate soaking. High spots and south-facing slopes will need more water than other areas. Apply less water in shady areas that receive less than four hours of direct sunlight daily. Grass under large trees will need more water since the tree roots will consume water and the tree canopy may intercept rainfall. Early morning watering is ideal. Less water is lost through evaporation and wind. Watering in the evening leaves the lawn wetter longer and increases the likelihood of disease problems. Your lawn may become brown during hot, dry spells. Did you know it’s in a dormant state and will green up again when wetter, cooler weather returns. A healthy lawn can survive several weeks in a dormant state.
