The issue of whether the City of Camrose should allow the keeping of urban chickens was further discussed during the committee of whole meeting on April 16. Swine and Poultry Health Veterinary Services Dr. Frank Marshall, who has practiced private veterinarian services in Camrose for 35 years, presented information on concerns about allowing chickens to be kept in Camrose. “My concerns lie in the issue of non-agriculturally trained people venturing into the poultry industry without the understanding of good animal husbandry practices,” said Marshall. Dr. Marshall outlined four key concerns including risk to commercial poultry industries, risks to zoonotic disease transmission from poultry to people, animal welfare and food safety with inappropriate antibiotic use. “The risk of undetected reportable diseases in backyard flocks exposes the commercial sector to severe risks in terms of production losses, financial losses and market access.” Marshall reported on three specific examples of reportable or notifiable diseases, both nationally and provincially. “Avian influenza is an obvious one to everybody and these particular strains are transmitted by wild foul. instances where we have backyard flocks, these are off the radar of provincial and federal programs that govern it.” Marshall spoke about the Infectious Laryngotracheitis ILT (herpes virus). “This one is extremely trackable, meaning I could walk around with it on my feet. For example, if birds are infected with this, the feces transfer out onto the sidewalk and I am there walking my dog picking it up on my shoes, unaware that I picked it up. Then the first farm I go to, I have delivered it right to the farm.” Marshall explained that zoonotic diseases are common diseases such as salmonella that are transmitted from poultry to people. “Salmonella, this

enteritidis species, is nondisease causing and nonsymptomatic in birds. They can pack it, but it’s lethal to us (humans) if we get contaminated with it through contact with eggs that are contaminated or with feces. Children under five years old are certainly a lot more susceptible to this. These are the things that are monitored in the commercial sector.” Other diseases include Campylobacter jejunum, E. coli, listeria and Red Mite, which Marshall indicated is making a comeback and is typically derived from wild bird contact with backyard flocks. “We do not see these diseases in the commercial business. Red Mite is certainly extremely rare.”

No complaints

I’m writing this on a gorgeous spring day. Blue sky, warm air, beginning to see early spring green, birds nesting, flowers poking up…makes me feel happy to be alive. Sure, there’s lots to be concerned about – unspeakably horrifying events in the news; grief piled upon grief; challenges that seem unending and insoluble, but blue skies, warm air, spring green and signs of unquenchable resilient life everywhere are antidotes. I’m grateful for the power of a beautiful spring day. That is making me remember an experiment a few years ago. The challenge

Someone challenged me to take part in a “no complaints week.” The idea was that several of us agreed to see how long we could go without complaining about anything. We were each supposed to wear an elastic band around a wrist. If we noticed ourselves complaining or feeling judgmental about something, we were supposed to snap the elastic band in order to snap ourselves out of complaining thoughts. We were to check in with each other once a day for a week. An educational week

That was an educational week. I was forced to notice how easy it was for me to slip into critical complaining mode in a nanosecond. Bad weather, the news, people in grocery line-ups, a disappointment, politics of the day…it seemed as if I was practically on red alert watching for opportunities to think or say critical things. I didn’t always say out loud what I was thinking, but I noticed how gleeful it felt to come up with a great zinger. I realized that I actually enjoyed that momentary feeling of superiority. Not a pretty picture. I noticed something else. The longer I allowed myself to stay in that complaining critical state, the more I found to complain about and the more the world looked like a dark place. If I didn’t interrupt my train of thought, I could feel the beginning of discouragement, anxiety, resentment and even hopelessness creep in. That was uncomfortable but useful information. I started to get a sense of the power of negative thinking, not only to influence my mood but actually to alter my perceptions. The antidote

I did not always snap the elastic band on my wrist when I noticed I was thinking or saying complaining things. In fact, by Day Three I stopped wearing the stupid elastic band (complain, complain). But mostly I did make a conscious effort to switch away from complaining mode. The easiest way was to start looking for something to be grateful about. It didn’t even have to be related to the thing I was complaining about. Any form of gratitude began to change my mood and my mindset. The happy thing I noticed was that the longer I could stay in gratitude mode, the more things and people I appreciated, and the better the whole world looked. I could feel optimism, confidence and even enjoyment creep in. It’s not the only time I’ve had this realization, but it was an excellent reminder. Many situations can be improved by the simple method of finding something to be grateful about. That changes our mindset which in turn changes everything. Yes, some things really are awful. This is not in praise of ignoring what needs fixing. But if we let ourselves sink into a mire of criticism and complaining, that lessens the energy we have to make improvements. If we arm ourselves with a generally grateful frame of mind, we can find the strength and wisdom to make needed changes, and deal with the hard things that cannot be changed. And the winner is… Back to our group. Did any of us make it through an entire day without complaining? Well, one person (not me) claimed she had been able to resist complaining about anything for more than 24 hours. Naturally the others of us complained that it wasn’t fair! ***

Camrose feeds into food eating challenge By Lori Larsen

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Mike Arechuk takes on a heaping handful of food during The Poncho and Lefty Food Eating Challenge.

Not for the faint of heart or the weak of stomach, food eating challenges have become a popular trend around the world. A Camrose downtown business has jumped on board the trend with what is dubbed The Poncho and Lefty Challenge. On April 26, Mike Arechuk was the first to try his hand, or more appropriately his stomach, at the eating challenge. Mike was given one hour to eat one pound of barbecue brisket on a bun, one pound of pulled pork on a bun, a large-sized poutine, a serving of macaroni and cheese, a cucumber salad and a single serving pecan pie. “He had one hour to finish all the food without any help and without leaving the table,” said South-

ern State BBQ owner Wes Baumle. “At the 55-minute mark, Mike called it quits with a small amount of poutine, macaroni and cheese and his pie left. He just couldn’t do it.” With over 400 food challenges throughout England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Ireland and 100 more in Canada, and now in Camrose, the trend is becoming so popular, challengers have actually created strategies to improve their chances including training for the events. In this instance, Mike may not have finished the required amount of food in the allotted time, but he really did give it his best shot, or should we say gulp.

BRSD ends partnership with Cornerstone School

By Murray Green

Time doesn’t always change things. The Battle River School Division and Cornerstone Christian Academy were no closer to resolving their differences on April 26 than they were six months ago. As a result, the partnership will end on the last day of school in June when both parties will go their separate ways. Cornerstone Christian Academy Society (CCA) and BRSD stopped talking to each other last October during the election and then CCA, located in Kingman, asked for a judicial review that forced BRSD to stop talking to the CCA because of advice they received from their lawyer. The dispute started when CCA asked for a change in the school vision to reflect the Bible’s view that same sex relationships shouldn’t be welcomed or encouraged. BRSD is following Alberta Education’s view that all people are treated equal regardless of race, religious beliefs and sexual orientation. “Please consider voting to keep Cornerstone Christian Academy open as an alternative school in BRSD. At least consider amending your motion to operate the school until such time that it can operate independently, for the sake of the 171 students, who would miss it immensely. This has been a traumatic year for students. Many of them have moved to Cornerstone from other BRSD schools. Their families have made a hard choice to attend Cornerstone, which has meant sacrifices, longer busing time, additional costs and fewer educational choices,” said CCA parent Mark Loewen in his address to the board last Thursday. “This is the first time

that a member of CCA has been asked to speak to the board officially with some of the new trustees. For the sake of Cornerstone’s 171 students, I ask that you overturn the decision that was made last June. Let’s sit down together and work at restoring the healthy relationship we had for almost 10 years. The decision by the previous board to close the school simply isn’t fair. The new trustees now have the opportunity to change it,” continued Deanna Margel, chair of the CCA Society. “It’s unfortunate that you (board members) were not at our graduation ceremony where a young women spoke about how CCA saved her life, literally. She was now at a school where she could express her faith and read the Bible without fear of constant bullying. She was ridiculed by students and even by some of the staff. Knowing that there was this school gave her enough hope to actually put down the knife that she had to her wrist and beg her parents to send her to CCA. We had the joy of celebrating with her.” When a communications protocol document wasn’t achieved by both parties last spring, the BRSD filed a year in advance notice of motion

OLMP OPEN HOUSE

to close the CCA. Part of the school closure mandate was to hold a public meeting and that was held on Feb. 27 in Kingman. That didn’t bring the two sides together either. A motion to close the school was passed unanimously by the BRSD board. “A once positive working relationship has now eroded into something unrecognizable. When I joined the board four years ago, my family went through the school closure process twice, so I understand the hurt, the anxiety and the potential loss of a sense of belonging. As an entire board, we expressed repeatedly what was required in order to come back to the table and unfortunately, that time never came,” said past chair Laurie Skori. “This has been extremely difficult for everybody – the students, staff, parents, community and the division. I care for the students at that school. However, as a public school board trustee, I have an obligation to represent all of the division. The judicial review was not dropped, so the communication and trust was lost,” said trustee Karen Belich. “I was hopeful this could have been resolved long before this day. There

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School drama students Alyssa Andrews, left, Keara Stitchman and Sara Tothe explain and show how makeup is applied for theatre productions during the open house on April 12. OLMP is getting ready for the play Arsenic and Old Lace held at the Lougheed Centre on May 9.

will be no winners here today. Not only are the 171 students affected, but the more than 6,000 other students will be because of the lawyers and budget restraints,” said trustee Lyle Albrecht. “I am saddened we are faced with this decision. I came away from the Dec. 11 meeting with the parents, with hope. What I didn’t see coming was a lawsuit against the division. It stopped us in our tracks to try and save the school. I don’t understand how filing a lawsuit was a better option than sitting down with us to talk,” said trustee Zsuzanna Hemperger. “I totally respect the direction people decide to take. The option to alternative schooling is towards private schools and I respect the direction they have to take,” said trustee Norm Erickson. “Ultimately, I want all students to find success at school. This decision is not taken lightly,” said BRSD board chair Kendall Severson. Cornerstone Christian Academy was an alternative school offered by the BRSD public school division. Although the CCA wanted to continue to talk in theory, they were unwilling to cooperate by removing the judicial review. “I’m extremely disappointed in the decision, but not surprised. I have a difficult time understanding those trustees could hear the impact the school has had in a positive way and what this is going to do, and the challenges it is going to bring to us,” said John Kauffman, vicechair of the CCA Society. “And, for them to unanimously vote, with prepared written statements, to close the school. They had this already decided and it wouldn’t have mattered what we said.” CCA had already applied to the province to

operate as a private school as well. “We continue to have hope, especially because we are people of faith. We have a plan for Cornerstone because it has been around since 1986. There will be challenges for sure, figuring out how to remain open as a private school. We have put in an application to the Alberta government to be a private school, but it is a lengthy process for that to happen,” said Deanna Margel, chair of the CCA. The challenge will be to have everything in place by next September. “I’m not sure what it will look like, but there will be Christian education in Kingman next year in some form,” added Margel. “We first filed the judicial review in late December, as late as possible. They had from the election in October to late December to meet with us and they didn’t. We sent invitation after invitation,” shared Kauffman. The staff at CCA are BRSD employees and will have the option to move to another school prior to the 2018-19 school year. “We made it very clear and specified that to get together, we can’t have the judicial review on the table because we are following our legal advice. If we don’t follow our legal advice, then why would we pay for it,” said Severson. “It was a tough decision. We all lost sleep about the decision, but in the end they were unwilling to remove the judicial review.” Cornerstone has 13 ATA staff (teachers, principle and vice principle) and five support staff that will be offered other positions within BRSD if they so choose. The Learning Together School, not the program, was also voted on to close as well. The program will be offered through the Outreach School now with the same choices.

HEALTHY MUSIC Murray Green, Camrose Booster Godfrey Blaque band members Dennis Gustavson, left, Jim Hough, Jan Nowakowski, Jim Lambe and Dave Lambe, along with Yin Yang Wellness Centre owner Cheryl Shold presented Brett Denham of the Battle River Community Initiatives with funds to forward to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. In late March and early April, my 2018 Tax Guide was sent to homes throughout the riding of Battle River-Crowfoot. The main intent of this circulation was to provide constituents with valuable information about what they can and cannot claim on this year’s income tax. As many of you have noted and criticized, the current Liberal government eliminated many of the tax credits our government brought in while we were in power from 2006 to 2015. This included the Education and Textbook Credit designed to help students and their parents; the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit which allowed you to claim for your children’s sport and art programs; and the Hiring Credit for Small Business providing up to $1,000 in reimbursement on Employment Insurance (EI) premiums. The Trudeau government also reduced the annual amount allowed to be put into your Tax Free Savings Account from $10,000 to $5,500. Another and equally important reason for the distribution of the Tax Guide was to provide constituents with an opportunity to have their say. The end of the booklet included a small questionnaire and space for written comments which could be sent back to me postage free. To date, I have received numerous responses and some extremely valuable input from Battle RiverCrowfoot constituents. The majority of the returns come from seniors who have overwhelmingly, but not surprisingly, experienced a decline in their standard of living. Most attribute this to higher taxes and higher utility costs with one senior writing “Trudeau promised lower taxes for middle income and seniors, but in fact taxes have increased and with the implementation of the carbon taxes (it) will increase even more.” A majority of all respondents mentioned their opposition to the carbon tax and especially the GST being applied to this tax. Another senior wrote, “I really hate carbon taxes that raise the cost of everything and makes us poorer as individuals and uncompetitive as a nation. I especially resent the inclusion of it on natural gas as I believe in Canada—the ability to heat our home is a basic need.” This sentiment about home heating being a basic need that should be exempt from taxation was expressed numerous times. Again, a majority of those who described themselves as working Canadians said their standard of living has declined as a result of increased taxes and rising utility costs. A few expressed the view “this Liberal government is out of control and it will take years to bounce back. Help!” One couple wrote, “As a parent from a rural area with two university students to support–I am so disappointed about that the Education and Textbook Tax credits have been scrapped. Our children do not have the option to live at home like big city kids and their living expenses are difficult for us to cover, forcing us to go further into debt.” Unfortunately, there is one sentiment I totally agree with “the future of our children is bleak at best,” especially if the Liberal government does not get spending under control, return to surplus as our Conservative government left them and start paying down the debt. While many of my constituents are experiencing financial difficulties and are concerned about their children and grandchildren’s future, I think they would all agree that these burdens pale in comparison to the loss experienced in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. To those parents of the Bronco players who lost their lives, to all the hockey players’ parents and host parents and to the community at large, on behalf of Battle RiverCrowfoot our deepest sympathies and prayers at this extremely difficult time. God bless. Female suspect runs from police April 26

A loss prevention officer from a west-side business contacted Camrose Police Service after apprehending two youths who were shoplifting. Police determined that one of the youth had stolen merchandise from two other stores. The youth was referred to the Youth Justice Commit-

tee and the second youth was given a warning under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. A traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle which resulted in a female passenger attempting to run from police. The female was breaching her curfew and also had a warrant

for three additional counts of breaching her probation. The female was arrested and is waiting on a bail hearing. A male who was determined to be responsible for causing damage to a local bar was identified and charged with mischief.

Wild Rose Co-op Animal shelter successful in adopting out cats By Lori Larsen

The Camrose and Area Animal Shelter Society reports ongoing success at the new facility. Society treasurer Lynn Horsman said the shelter is having successful adoptions with approximately five or six cats being adopted per month. “Some of the cats that have been in our shelter for a few months are transferred to other facilities, such as SAFE Team Rescue in Edmonton, where they are cycled through their cage-free ‘lifestyle’ rooms.” By doing so, the animals are given a little more roaming room and the exposure for adoption is much greater. As well, the Camrose Shelter is afforded much needed freed up space for incoming animals. The shelter lease is presently funded by the City of Camrose, which takes pressure off the allo-

cation of funds from donations and initiatives the Society takes on to raise money for the shelter. “People have been great about donating,” said Horsman. “And we have been doing bottle drives, our biggest fundraiser.” The Society recently completed a bottle drive and was able to raise $1,260. “Everything about the drives are communitydriven and donated,” added Horsman. “From the use of a trailer to collect and haul the bottles, to six bottle depot staff who volunteer after hours to sort them.” If you are looking for a great way to clean out your own collection of bottles, consider donating them to the Shelter. Empty refundable containers such as bottles, cans and milk cartons can be dropped off at the Shelter (located at Bay 8-4617-41 Street during open hours), or you can contact the Shelter at 780-

608-0091 and arrange to have them pick up your donated bottles. While donations are graciously accepted, the shelter is run strictly on volunteers and is always in need of extra hands. “What we really need right now are volunteers for specific duties such as cat care that goes beyond just playing with and petting the animals. It includes cleaning litter boxes, sanitizing cages and cat holding areas.” Cleanliness is a vital

part of cat care at the Shelter in order to maintain the standards necessary to ensure the health and welfare of the animals. Cat care volunteers are asked to make a commitment of three shifts per month, for a minimum of six months whenever possible. Volunteers are also needed for events and phone calls, as well as sewing/crocheting pet beds, bandanas and toys which are sold in our foyer and at event tables The shelter also invites

people to volunteer who have specific qualifications such as accounting to help with the bookkeeping duties. While the Society continues the process of applying for charitable status, enabling them to issue tax receipts, seek sponsorship opportunities and apply for community funds and grants, they are planning a few events and initiatives including the Pet Expo which will run Saturday, Aug. 18 in the Cornerstone parking lot. The Expo will feature several pet related vendors, various other rescues, 50/50 tickets and adoptable cats. Hours of operation for the Camrose and Area Animal Shelter are Tuesday 10 a.m. until noon, Thursday 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. For more information on the Camrose and Area Animal Shelter Society, visit their Facebook page.

Chicken concerns Continued from page 2

The third aspect of concern Marshall reported on was that of animal welfare. “Despite good intentions of people pursuing backyard poultry production, the lack of training in animal management and husbandry certainly puts the animals at risk. In the winter time in Canada, the birds do not do well outside and should not be outside. They are meant to be in the tropics.” Marshall said that untrained people identifying and treating diseases that they don’t understand and fully gather adds significant risk. “We are also seeing, in some of these instances, old backyard diseases that have long since been eradicated coming back, because of inappropriate animal husbandry and exposure to garbage and table scraps.” The final concern Marshall discussed was that of food safety and improper use of antibiotics. “In the past couple of years, we have watched people seek out information on the internet and misdiagnose reportable diseases. They are treating them with antibiotics that are not approved for use in Canadian food animals. They don’t seek out veterinary consultation adequately, in my experience, until things are in a desperate situation.” Councillor Max Lindstrand inquired about the risks of having chickens today versus in the past when small quarter- or half-section farmers had 15 or so chickens to harvest the eggs for personal use. “The second issue I would like to ask about has to do with comparing various animals. What other risks do we have in respect to diseases with having dogs and cats (in the city) and how does that compare to having chickens, in your view?” Marshall responded by saying, “We know dogs and cats can harbour various things that are harboured in people. Streptococcus strains can be harboured in dogs and transmitted into family causing throat problems. But on the scale of food poisoning, the chicken gives us one of the greatest numbers of agents possible. On the poultry side of things, it is triple if not quadruple the number of disease possibilities coming out of that sector. “In the commercial industry, eggs laid in litter do not get marketed into our table egg market. So if an egg is out there on the ground in feces and they pick it up and take it into the fridge, that’s as easy as it gets for any of these organisms, particularly Salmonellosis (to occur).”

Councillor Greg Wood inquired as to the risk that other birds, such as magpies or crows, impose. Marshall did indicate these types of birds also pose a risk of carrying these diseases and contact with those birds can prove hazardous, including if they come into contact with backyard flocks. “There is greater risk with the misunderstanding or lack of understanding of dealing with and mitigating these issues.”

Great news for municipal organizations By Bruce Hinkley, MLA Wetaskiwin-Camrose

The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) will use $54 million in funding from the Climate Leadership Plan to deliver multi-year programs for small scale community generation, energy efficiency upgrades for buildings and schools. This new funding will help ensure that the buildings Albertans rely on, including arenas, recreation centres, pools are more energy efficient and sustainable for the long term. Grant details include $16.5 million for Renewable Energy and Community Generation, supporting small scale renewables projects in municipalities across the province; $17.5 million for Community Infrastructure Greening, helping municipalities reduce greenhouse gas emissions by retrofitting municipal buildings; $5 million for Municipal Fleet Greening, which would target the testing of electric busing in municipalities with a view to sharing the knowledge and experience broadly with other municipalities; $15 million for Renewable Energy for Schools, providing funding to school authorities to install solar technology systems on existing school facilities. For non-profit organizations like community halls the program NEET will cover 100 per cent of the direct costs for energy efficiency audits and energy management plans for eligible participants up to a maximum of $12,000 per organization. Participants with audit costs exceeding $12,000 will be invoiced directly for the remainder. The Non-Profit Energy Efficiency Transition Program (NEET) has allocated $1.1 million to 138 non-profit organizations for 143 energy audits and energy management plan projects to date. Program details are located on the MCCAC website. A tutorial on how to apply to the program and what information to prepare is available there. Direct any questions to contact@mccac.ca or contact Calvlin Lechelt at clechelt@mccac.ca or 780-409-7450. Two constituency organizations, the Bailey Theatre Society and the Lions Club of Millet are in the process of doing their report and application. More are definitely welcome. Some Albertans are opposed to carbon levies, but clear evidence from BC is that carbon pricing does reduce carbon in the air. Additional research by Bruce Anderson of Abacus Canada Ecofiscal Commission has found that 74 per cent say taking action to solve climate change should be a priority; by a wide margin, Canadians prefer governments to put more rather than less emphasis on reducing greenhouse gas emissions; and a huge majority of Canadians feel it is a good idea for the economy to transition to a reliance on lower carbon energy sources, including 68 per cent of Albertans who say this would be good for our provincial economy. As tourism is a contributor to economic diversification and quality of life in Alberta, Culture and Tourism has created the Tourism Growth Innovation Fund (TGIF). This grant will help ensure eligible tourism industry stakeholders are supported in projects that expand Alberta’s destinations and experiences. The TGIF targets projects that increase knowledge of tourism assets and markets and build operator capacity to deliver memorable experiences. Although stakeholders from all regions can apply to the TGIF, preference will be provided to projects located in smaller Alberta communities outside the mountain parks. Preference will also be given to projects focused on growing tourism in the winter and shoulder seasons, providing Indigenous cultural experiences and sharing Alberta’s heritage and natural environment with the world. The TGIF is composed of two streams. Destination Development Support: facilitating tourism growth through research-based studies, surveys, strategies, and plans for tourism organizations and Alberta municipalities to help them to create new product and destination development opportunities and Product Development Support: facilitating programming and capacity-building projects to offer and grow tourism experiences among nonprofit operators of tourism attractions. Congratulations for the City of Camrose Public Library for being selected for one of the 2018 Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Public Library Service “Snacks in the Stacks” program. Wishing everyone a great day until will meet again. Take care. Serious highway accident By Lori Larsen

A 77-year-old man was taken to University of Alberta Hospital by STARS air ambulance on April 25 after a serious motor vehicle collision occurred on Highway 13 just west of Camrose. The

male had to be extracted from the vehicle by the fire department prior to being transferred to the hospital. The highway was closed for five hours as police investigated what appeared to have been a

west-bound car pulling over to the side of the highway and then conducting a u-turn on the highway, when it was struck by a truck that had been travelling directly behind the car in question.

City proposes changes to current smoking bylaw

By Lori Larsen

City of Camrose council heard on the proposed smoking bylaw changes that addresses all forms of smoking and vaping including where smoking is prohibited. City administration reviewed legislation proposed by Les Hagen, executive director of Action on Smoking and Health, as well as legislation and bylaws from other munici-

palities, in an effort to prepare the draft City of Camrose bylaw. “We are proposing that cannabis be treated in the same light as we treat smoking of tobacco products,” said City of Camrose deputy manager Kim Isaak. “And proposing the definition of tobacco to include weed and other substances.” Within the current bylaw, smoking in and around public places is pro-

hibited and the proposed bylaw would then include smoking of cannabis in those places as well. Isaak indicated that the City is following the lead of the Province in that smoking cannabis will be treated the same as smoking tobacco or vaping. “We recognize that some residents may wonder why we are not treating cannabis like alcohol, but that can create other challenges, especially with enforcement,” said Isaak, indicating that using the bylaw officer and police to enforce it could be taxing on those resources. Isaak added, “When you look at the areas where the City has implemented no smoking, there are really not a lot of places where people will be able to smoke either tobacco products or cannabis.” The proposed bylaw specifically outlines smokefree public places and workplaces. Section 4.1 of the bylaw reads, “No person shall smoke in any indoor place to which the public is ordinarily invited or permitted to attend, along with a list of specific places

including the addition of hotels, public housing, public parks and residential care facilities. Section 4.3 of the proposed bylaw states that, “Notwithstanding anything contained in this bylaw, the prohibitions set out in Section 4.1 do not apply to the use of electronic cigarettes in Public Housing.” “We have included vaping for medicinal purposes in public housing that are subsidized by the Province.” The proposed bylaw also includes new definitions of hotels, outdoor public events, public housing, public parks, residential care facilities and smoking. “Our current bylaw really does prohibit smoking in a lot of places, but the public may not be totally aware of where smoking is prohibited,” noted Isaak. “In the proposed bylaw, we have extended it to any of the walking trails because they are part of the City’s parks system.” The current bylaw also reads that no person shall smoke within 10 metres of a playground, park, seasonal skating rink, skate park,

sports field, water spray park or toboggan hill. “It also reads that no one can smoke in public buildings or outside of public buildings by five metres,” said Isaak. “As an example, the Rudy Swanson area is a park and the Encana Centre is inside of that park, so that poses a challenge. The City is going to have to work on educating the public.” Isaak said the City will be reaching out to organizations and the public for feedback on the proposed bylaw after which they will take it back to City council for first reading on May 22. In conclusion, Isaak said, “Our current bylaw is fairly restrictive in the areas where a person can smoke. But the City recognizes that there needs to be more education and some increased signage in areas that prohibit smoking.” For more information on the current smoking bylaw, visit the City website at www.camrose.ca/ under heading City Services, subheading Bylaws.

The Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School drama students will be presenting Arsenic and Old Lace at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre at 7 p.m. on May 9 for one show only. Teacher Desiree De Kock has been guiding her students through this dark comedy. Arsenic and Old Lace is a play written by American playwright Joseph Kesselring in 1939. “I’m excited about this play because of the success we had with The Importance of Being Earnest last year,” she said. “Fortunately, we have grown. We went from having seven students last year to having 18 this year. When you have more students, you can do more. Arsenic and Old Lace is a funny and timeless classic that is a little twisty. That’s what makes it interesting. We have a lot of amazing characters.” “The play is well written and challenging in a sense that the stage involves bodies and lights in order to make the plot interesting for the audience,” said Desiree. “I have 13 characters, four stage hands and I have one young man that joined

us strictly to help build sets.” Mortimer Brewster is living a happy life with a steady job at a prominent New York newspaper (as the entertainment critic no less). He found love and is about to become engaged to the (not so) sweet girl next door. However, he also has two very charitable spinster aunts who love him dearly. Mortimer knew in the back of his mind that his family had a bit of a mad gene – his brother believes himself to be Teddy Roosevelt and his grandfather performed questionable medical experiments on a patient, but his world is turned upside down when he realizes that his dear aunts have been poisoning lonely old men for years with a glass of homemade elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine and just a pinch of cyanide. “When the nephew finds out, it adds some interesting plots to the play. Then there is Dr. Einstein, who is not the most uppercut plastic surgeon, and he is part of the plot,” added Desiree. “In my experience, people tend to like comedies and people like to laugh. The great thing about this piece is that although it is a bit dark, it is hilarious.”

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School drama student Malcolm Guglich (Mortimer Brewster) catches Janessa Burr (Elaine Harper) in a scene from the play Arsenic and Old Lace held at the Lougheed Centre on May 9.

When Mortimer’s maniacal brother Jonathan (who now resembles Frankenstein’s monster) returns on the night the aunts were planning to bury the newest victim, Mortimer must rally to help his aunts and protect his fiancé – all while trying to keep his own sanity intact. Going from a small group to a larger class is good for the program, but it also has some challenges. “It is a split class, so I have Drama 10, 20 and 30 students with various amounts of experience. I also have some Grade 9 students, which is new. The students who I had last year are in the more leading roles and the newer students are in the supporting roles. It works well to build that stepping stone. I hope that as the program grows, it will keep happening.” The drama class is more than just acting. “We have set builders and the person that is good at applying makeup. These are skills that people can use for their entire life. You gain public speaking skills, social skills and stage experience. It is good to see the students rise to the occasion. Being involved in local theatre is so much fun. It is a lifelong love of the arts.”

Arden set for two shows in Camrose By Murray Green

Multiple award winning singer-songwriter Jann Arden has agreed to perform not just one, but two shows in Camrose at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Centre on Nov. 1 and 2 beginning at 7:30 p.m. “We were lucky to get her for two nights. I’m pretty sure we are going to need two nights, one would have been sold out right away. We didn’t want anyone to be disappointed. We have had a few big artists last season that were sold out really fast and lots of people couldn’t get tickets,” said Nick Beach, manager of the Lougheed Centre. Tickets go on sale for Arden’s shows at 9 a.m. on May 4. “The fastest way to order tickets is to do so online. We will have extra staff on if you want to phone or stop in to the box office,” said Nick. “She has clearly been the most requested artist that we have had. People were asking us, ‘Do you think she would play here?’ She is a superstar in Canada and is known worldwide. When people from other countries look at Canada, they think of her as being a top Canadian artist. I’ve been trying to get her for a couple of years.” Arden is an Albertaborn singer, songwriter, broadcaster and author. The much celebrated multiplatinum award-winning artist catapulted onto the Canadian music scene in 1993 with the release of her debut album Time For Mercy featuring the hit single, “I Would Die For You.” A year later with Living Under June, she would have her career breakout hit, “Insensitive” that would solidify her position in the music world. “We are excited to be part of her new album tour that she released in March. What I love about her is not only her brilliant music, but if you have ever seen her live, she arguable one of the best shows because she is so funny,” added Nick. She has released 14 albums with 19 top 10

singles. Her most recent recording These Are the Days was released this March. Once again, Grammy Award-winning producer Bob Rock was behind the console of what could arguably be Arden’s most personal and poignant offering to date. Last year, Arden completed a highly successful 27-date Canadian tour, previewing two of the newly recorded songs, “A Long Goodbye” and “Everybody’s Always Pulling On Me”. Last November, Arden released the Canadian best seller Feeding My Mother– Comfort and Laughter in the Kitchen as My Mom Lives with Memory Loss. The book shares insights, loss, irony, and yes, humour as mother and daughter face the journey together. “Initially I wanted two shows and then was told that you get the date that works for the rest of the tour,” explained Nick. “Fortune was on our side and a date came open, so we received back-to-back dates. If we can get two shows for an iconic artist like this, we are going to try our best to do so.” In her career to date, Arden has received eight Juno Awards including Female Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year in 1997 and again in 2016, she hosted the Awards ceremony. Arden is also the recipient of 10 SOCAN Awards, four Western Canadian Music Awards, a Much Music Video Award, three Prairie Music Awards and an Alberta Recording Industry Association Award. Arden is the proud recipient of a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame; she has been inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and has been given the Vantage Women of Originality Award. In 2012, she was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and in 2013 was inducted into the Western Canadian Music Alliance Hall of Fame. Continued on page 17

In addition to being a singer-songwriter, Arden is, of course, an author of note. Her previous releases include If I Knew, Don’t You Think I’d Tell You and I’ll Tell You One Damn Thing, That’s All I Know and her bestselling self-penned memoir Falling Backwards. In the past, Arden has written a monthly advice column for Elle Canada – a feature that ran for a year. She is also a much in demand speaker, peppering her words of wisdom with her signature humour. In 2010, Arden took on broadcast duties as of the host of Being Jann, an hour-long talk show on CBC Radio and a year later, she sat in the judge’s chair for Canada Sings (Global TV). Arden has also been a guest host on the Social (CTV) over the course of the past five years. A wellknown advocate for animals, Arden narrated the popular program ER Vets and she has also produced two documentaries Free and Jann Takes Manhattan, both of which were met with favourable reviews. Never one to settle into one discipline, Arden has made appearances in television sitcoms – Ellen in 1997, Corner Gas in 2005 and several guest appearances on the CBC’s Rick Mercer Report. This year,

Arden has been involved in Working Moms and The Detour. Whether she is captivating audiences with her heartfelt music, entertaining them with her quick wit or sharing her written word in a boldly honest voice, Arden is a Canadian original – a brilliant multidimensional talent.

Pickleball tournament to be held By Murray Green

The first large pickleball tournament featuring about 188 participants will be held in Camrose in the Max McLean Arena on Saturday, May 5. “We hope this is the first of an annual tournament. We have players aged 10 to 75 signed up to play and they are coming from across the province. We have some from Nanton, Drayton Valley, Cold Lake and Rocky Mountain House. We have about 15 entered from Camrose,” said Faye Ebertz, secretary of the local club. Participants enter as single players and then are teamed up with another player. The action begins at 8 a.m. and wraps up around 8 p.m. The Grr-Kins Pickleball Club members are hoping to grow the tournament in Camrose in the future. “Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports,” she said. Pickleball is played on a court similar in size to a badminton court with a

net close in height to a tennis net. Using paddles that resemble oversized table tennis paddles and a perforated polymer ball, the sport is played with two to a side on a court approximately a quarter the size of a regulation tennis court and is enjoyed by all ages. The local club has

grown to about 60 members from Camrose and surrounding area. During summer months, the club prefers to play on outdoor courts such as at the high school in order to take advantage of the shortlived summer.

Riding the rail in Camrose

By Lori Larsen

Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park offers a variety of activities and sites to experience, right here in our own backyard. Opening on May 19, the Station invites guests to come in and partake in a valuable part of Camrose and area’s history of the rail through exhibits, along with other great pieces of history, amazing gardens, the ambience of the Tea Room and King George room, a Percy-like train ride and the White Elephant Gift Shop. The Station has a variable lineup of events to offer visitors this season, starting with the annual Plant Sale and Swap on May 26 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Residents are invited to come by and purchase or swap some of the many plants grown at the Station. “This is always well attended,” said Station chairperson and director Glenys Smith. “We have people asking us weeks before if we are having the plant sale again.” Smith will also share gardening tips with attendees. Exploring the Land and Its History is taking place on June 6 at the Meeting Creek Station. The school program is designed for Grade 4 and 5 students, taking them through

and some of the parents accompanying the field trips come back later (with family) in the summer.” The Station has also been working on their library by archiving information and photos on a database that will be available to anyone interested in accessing the large amount of data available. On July 14, Camrose and area residents are encouraged to come out to the Station and celebrate the contribution coal has made to this area during the Coal: The End of an Era event. “We are going to have different stations associated with coal and fireside activities where people will be doing things such as storytelling, tea and poetry, singing and quilting,” said Smith. All of the activities planned for that day, as well as many of the exhibits and displays, will be based around coal used in the railway “Age of Steam”. Rides will be available on the Percy-like train and guests are welcome to enjoy the Station gardens, White Elephant Gift Shop and other museum exhibits. Attendees can also purchase a self-serve miner’s light lunch in what will be called the Station Beanery for the day. Prestage said, “The whole purpose for the rail-

The Station has also carved out a special day for the children on Aug. 3: Friends of Thomas the Train from 1 until 5 p.m. “Primarily, it is aimed at children,” said Prestage. “There will be face painting, a history hunt, games, crafts and other fun activities. We will also be running Thomas on the garden railway and the speeder, Percy-like train will be giving rides.” “It is a simple day and a lot of fun for children and family,” added Smith. A nominal fee for the event will be charged, which will be donated to Camrose Literacy, Books Under the Tree initiative. “We felt that is a great time to get parents connected and thinking about that upcoming initiative.” The Station Swing Band will once again be entertaining during the Aug. 11 Camrose Heritage Garden Party from 1 until 4 p.m. “This will be the 18th year in a row that the Station Swing Band has come,” said Prestage. As part of Prairie Fun Days (combined with Open Farm Days this year), the Meeting Creek Station will have self-guided or guided tours, speeder train and wagon rides, musical entertainment and fun activities for the children. The day is hosted by role-playing characters that make it that much more authentic. “I really enjoy participating because most of my career was spent working for a grain company, so I get to be the elevator agent for the day,” said Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park managing director Norm Prestage. The school programs offered at the Station have proven to be successful. “We are getting four Grade 4 classes, two at a time, coming from Stettler,” said Smith. “We are bringing people into our community from surrounding areas

Driving in style down on the farm By Murray Green

This 1965 Chevrolet truck short box step side 4x4 has a special meaning for Tanya Bergquist of the Bawlf area. Although it has been her farm truck for many years, it has served her family well. “I always admired the truck, so when my grandpa gave it to me, he created a special place in my heart for it,” said Tanya. “He (Duncan Kennedy) got it second hand out in BC and was the second owner. He used it as a giant wheelbarrow. He used it on his acreage. When he retired to move off the acreage and into town, he shipped it out to me.” Tanya took care of the truck from an early age. “Every time I went out to visit them, I would wash it and I said to him, someday I would like to have this truck, grandpa. So, he gave it to me. It is kind of neat because it is a piece of my family history. I was very close to my grandpa. He loved antiques and collecting things. Every time I drive it, (my grandma called it the beast) I remember them. It is still called the beast and it is my farm truck.” The 1965 Chevrolet truck was built with durable components and iconic styling. Primarily used for hauling up to half a ton of material, this truck is now a popular choice for collectors and car restorers. Whitewall tires and stainless steel trim added to the iconic look of this flat bed truck. “It is dark green, but the original colour was Yuma yellow. When it came out from BC it was more of a moss green because of the coast weather. It doesn’t even have a block heater. I don’t drive it in the winter, it gets parked in the shed.” The original engine in the Chevy was a 230 cubicinch six cylinder, which could reach 165 horsepower. “It has a straight six motor. My husband keeps threatening to put a 454 big block in it, but that is not going to happen.” In Canada, Chevrolet trucks were first produced in 1965. Before that it was only GMC trucks. “I use the truck for running around

on the farm. It has been a good, solid truck for various chores. I drive in on the roads, so I can go anywhere with it. I haven’t done much to it and it just keeps running well. It is a rare truck with both a short-bed and 4x4. It is one of only 66 built in Canada, so it’s not a common vehicle. My son keeps threatening to restore it one day. I wouldn’t mind that at all,” added Tanya. “The problem with that is if it is restored, then I can’t drive it around in the fields any more. That’s why I’m holding back.” Standard factoryinstalled features for the Chevy included four-way flashing lights, self-canceling turn signals and tilt steering. “It is such a unique vehicle that everyone knows who it is when I’m driving around. It is fun to drive, you sit up high and see everything. I have two boys and both of them learned how to drive a standard using this truck. They have lots

of friends that came over to learn how to drive a standard using my old beast.” No major off-roading for this classic. “I don’t use 4x4 a lot. No mud bogging. They would be in big trouble if they did. I use it mainly in harvest season when I take meals out to the field, or to make a parts run and sometimes just help moving from one field to the other.” For the first time, the truck will be on show for everyone to see. “A show and shine for me, is not just show cars. If you have a car that you are proud of and you love, bring it to the show and shine,” suggested Tanya. “It is a place to show off what you drive.” The first show and shine of the season will be held in Bawlf on May 12. It is the first ever car show in the community. To enter your vehicle in the show and shine call the village office at 780-373-3797. “In Bawlf, we are really trying to develop garage

sale weekend and make it more of an event. We have pets coming for adoption, various vendors in the hall, we are having a breakfast at the school as a fundraiser,

so we are trying to make it a full community event with the show and shine that people can come and spend the day.”

Aunt Martha likes to talk from the back seat

If you have a vintage ride (rebuilt or original) or if you’re in the midst of a build: street, rat or restoration, we’d like to profile your project.

Soon she will be able to tell your car where to go Voice technology is coming down the road for self-driving cars. It sounds like science fiction but in reality it’s not too far away. Yet, even with all these incredible changes, there will always be the occasional “oopsie.” The more Aunt Martha talks, the bigger the chance for an “oopsie.” If an “oopsie” does happen, you need to find a great body shop able to fix your high-tech vehicle, and it just so happens there’s one right here in Camrose. The Auto Shoppe is the only factory certified collision repair shop for miles around. That means your vehicle is in good hands. The highly trained professionals at the Auto Shoppe can take out the “oopsies” while keeping the scientific technology running smoothly. And Aunt Martha will need to learn to keep her voice down in the back seat.

The season promises some family fun activities along with offering residents and visitors a wonderful place to come and enjoy the history of Camrose and area displayed throughout the museum and grounds. Stephanie Olson is coming back from last year and

then another Augustana student, Jayda Calon,” said Veenstra. Aside from assisting with the upcoming events at the museum, the summer employment students will also be completing the upgrades on the Church and updating displays and exhibits throughout the museum and grounds. “Hopefully we will have the Church ready and open by the end of July, beginning of August.” Veenstra explained that there will also be two research assistants who were hired by a professor at Augustana, working in the school house (at the museum) doing research on school house and education, including the Camrose Normal School and Likeness School.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Feel better through fitness By Murray Green

Fitness helps you feel better and have more energy for work and leisure time. You’ll feel more able to do things like playing with your kids, gardening, dancing, or biking. Children and teenagers who are fit may have more energy and better focus at school. When you stay active and fit, you burn more calories, even when you’re at rest. Being fit lets you do more physical activity. And it lets you exercise harder without as much work. It can also help you manage your weight. Improving your fitness is good for your heart, lungs, bones, muscles, and joints. And it lowers your risk for falls, heart attack, diabetes, high blood pressure, and some cancers. If you already have one or more of these problems, getting more fit may help you control other health problems and make you feel better. Being more fit also can help you to sleep better, handle stress better and keep your mind sharp. How much physical activity do you need for health-related fitness? Experts say your goal should be at least two-and-a-half hours of moderate to vigorous activity each week.
