Museum coordinator Dariya Veenstra and Jayda Calon, summer student at the museum and organist for this photo, look forward to welcoming you to the museum this season.
The construction of Holy Angels and All Saints’ Church, north of Bittern Lake, happened in 1908 thanks to funding courtesy of an English maiden lady. Its rich history included a move across the ice of the lake into the village in 1921. The tiny but sturdy log church was renamed St. Dunstan’s Church. If you have visited Camrose & District Centennial Museum over the past couple of years and were disappointed to find the historic church on the property not open for viewing, this is the summer to return. Extensive repairs are on the verge of being completed, including major work on the roof and interior ceiling. Only a bit of interior painting and plenty of dusting is required before the public will once again have an opportunity to relive what it was like to worship yesteryear in a typical rural-sized church in Alberta.

Letters to the Editor Sappy Mother’s Day?
Of holidays in the year, the one that causes me the most discomfort is Mother’s Day. Since I became a mother, I’ve always felt a tad fraudulent. For openers, the qualifications required to be a mother are not rigorous. You don’t have to study or practice skills or pass tests or promise to do your duty. Think about it. You need more qualifications for practically any job on the planet than you need to take on the world’s most important job–being a parent and ultimately responsible for the survival of the species. ***
Mother knows best? From my first day as a mother, I don’t recall ever feeling sure that I knew best. I was doing the best I could, but from a state of complete overwhelm. In those days, as now, advice was available from everywhere. Today’s advice is available from more sources but just as in the olden days, advice is conflicting. Who do you believe? “Trust your instincts,” somebody said. I didn’t know if I had any instincts. The expectation that I should know best– when I knew I did not–was completely intimidating. ***
When I became a mother, I experienced for the first time how profoundly we cannot ever be totally in control. Once a pregnancy has progressed past a certain point, your body will do what your body will do. No matter if you read or watch stuff or take prenatal classes, your labour and delivery experience is going to be what it’s going to be. If you’re fortunate, you can arrange for a helpful environment, but you cannot control how your body handles the process. A humbling but useful life lesson: do not expect that you will ever be able to control every aspect of your life. ***
I have listened to stories of adult men and women whose lives have been enriched and even saved by the actions and words of their mothers. I have listened to stories of adult women and men who have been harmed beyond words by the actions and words of their mothers. I’ve spent time with young mothers, mostly in their teens, who were trying to get off the streets. When I listened to the stories of what these young women had experienced, I ached for them and marvelled at their fierce determination to somehow provide a different world for their babies. One unforgettable moment–when one of these young moms was inundated with desperate calls from her mother who was homeless again and wanting to couch surf with the daughter. The daughter wanted to help her mother and also knew that her alcoholic drug-addicted mother would be destructive to the young mom’s fragile living arrangement with her baby. This too is a form of motherhood.
Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Still muzzled?
For several years leading up to the 2015 federal election there were reports of scientists being muzzled by the Harper government. Now some two and a half years later I am still waiting to hear what important information it was that they were prevented from sharing with us. What conclusion are we supposed to reach on their silence on this issue? Is the list of Earth-shaking discoveries so lengthy that they have still not had time to compile it? Was the information released to the media and not deemed newsworthy? Or, horror of all horrors, could it be they are still being muzzled, even after over two years of Sunny Days? Larry Lewsaw, Camrose
Poor roads
I moved here from Vancouver, BC, where I spent my life growing up. That was 15 years ago. I looked all over BC and Alberta for two years for a place to retire. Camrose is where I ended up. I knew it would grow and it has. Camrose has not kept up with the road and
sidewalk replacement. Go to the north side of town where a lot of sidewalks need to be replaced. The ones that have been replaced are not level and are made out of asphalt. Another joke for the taxpayers in the area. As the City grows, we all get more traffic on our streets. I have a 75 per cent increase, but my street is not blocked off. Then there is the long grass on the berm, all so they could save money for the overbuilt City Hall. If I wanted to grow long grass in my yard or on an empty lot in town, how long would it take the City to come and give me a fine. They want my yard to look good, but not the city berm. Property taxes in Camrose are way too high. My brother-in-law has a 10-year-old, five-bedroom house in Camrose valued at $625,000 and his taxes are $6,200 a year. My sister has an 11-yearold, five-bedroom house in Coquitlam, BC, valued at $1,200,000 and her taxes are $3,200 a year. Retired people on a fixed income are going to move out and some have because taxes are too high. Glenn Dunn, Camrose Tax guide
Kevin Sorenson, you need to change your ways. I read your recent report in The Booster reflecting on your “tax guide” and it is just more of the same. I read your “tax guide” and tossed it. How dare you use my tax dollars to send me blatant propaganda? At least be honest. The parliamentary budget office (accountants who keep the national
books) concluded that due to the Liberals’ middle class tax cut, the Liberals are taking in less in taxes that your Conservative government was. The U of C economist Trevor Tombe has studied the Alberta economic numbers and concluded that “Alberta’s recovery is real and its economy is strong”. But from you Kevin, all we get is a steady stream of fear and anger. You need to change Kevin. In a recent Insights West poll Canadians were asked which occupations they respected. While we respect nurses, doctors, farmers, scientists and teachers, we really don’t respect politicians. Politicians came in dead last. We don’t respect you politicians because you put the interests of your political party before the country and you are rather shady with the truth. Stop the fear mongering Kevin, and start to work in the interest of your constituents. There are positive things you can do for us. I’m not going to stop pressing you to work for a national pharmacare program. We in Canada pay ridiculous medication prices because we don’t have a national pharmacare program. Canadians pay more for medicines than we do for doctors’ salaries. Statistics Canada says that having a national pharmacare program would save Canadians $15 billion/year. That is the same as a massive tax cut with no loss of government services. Work to get us a national pharmacare program Kevin, and you will earn our respect. Rob Hill Camrose

Motherhood taught me that some things cannot be fixed. You can’t click a “reset” button and go back and make things like they were before. Motherhood taught me that joy shows up in unexpected forms, in moments of delight that you could never have created intentionally. When I became a mother, I became more compassionate of my own mother. ***
Here’s what I’ve concluded–tentatively! Whether by choice or by accident, the majority of women become mothers. Most mothers love their children as best they can, shaped in part by how they have or have not been loved. Most mothers do the best they can with what they know and what they’re capable of and what society expects of them and what their children present to them that nobody could have predicted. ***
On Mother’s Day, let us honour our mothers in a way that makes sense for us (including not at all!), and let us have compassion for mothers and children who are doing the best they can. On Mother’s Day, for those of us who are mothers, let us appreciate the gifts that motherhood has given us, and be at peace with ourselves and however our children choose to recognize the day–including not at all! ***

Teens in Camrose and surrounding area can celebrate graduating from high school with friends in a safe environment at the CityLights Church (492048 Street) on May 12. “We wanted to plan a celebration with a fun night to remember the special occasion,” said associate Pastor Bryan Darnell. “We are hoping for a lot of people, so it will be fun and a good opportunity to meet others. We are promoting health and safety.” The Camrose Dry Grad Party is planned for Saturday, May 12 from 6 to 12 p.m. with a hot tub, bumper balls, big screen games, photo booth, quackquack ball, street hockey and basketball. There will be an Italian soda bar and unlimited food. “This is a night of celebrating our graduating class. There will be endless amounts of food and loads of activities. This is one party you don’t want to miss,” said Pastor Clayton Milgate. “It is an alternative to safe grad.” Door prizes could be won by graduating Grade 12 students, regardless of which school they attend. “This is a community event, not a church event. We want students from any school that doesn’t have a dry grad to join us. It doesn’t matter if they are from Bawlf or Wetaskiwin, we want everyone to feel welcome to join us,” added Milgate. Teens from Grade 9 to 12 are welcome to register by emailing citylights church@hotmail.com or by calling 780-672-4261. Students will be asked to have a parent or legal guardian sign a waiver. You can print one from citylightschurch.com/dry-grad-waiver in advance, or at the door. There is a charge for joining the Dry Grad Party.

ert Renman, one of the organizers. “We are hoping to get a lot of people out and it is a fun course. It’s a fun place to run because you don’t have to worry about traffic.” Located in the beautiful city of Camrose, the route takes you through a scenic run or walk into

the valley using the trail system. “We are trying to get 200 runners and would like to hit that mark this year,” he said. “This run is a good way to get motivated to run in other events or to get in shape. It is a fun way to exercise.” The run starts at Stoney Creek Centre, east on 39 Avenue toward the ski hill. The eight-kilometre course has one somewhat challenging hill, which comes at about 4.5 kilometres into the race. The three-kilometre race has no hills and is a very flat course. Brendan Lunty won the eight-kilometre race last year and Wesley Joyce was the fastest in the three-kilometre. Children receive a Camrose Running Club shirt and a special medal. For more information on the run, visit camroserunning.ca or call 780608-3586.
More families in the Wetaskiwin and Camrose area will have access to affordable child care due to 156 newly affordable spaces. The Camrose Children’s Centre will be funded for 80 newly affordable spaces, while the Wetaskiwin Early Childhood Development Centre will be funded for 76 newly affordable spaces. These licensed spaces already exist and the funding will make them available to parents for no more than $25 per day. Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA Bruce Hinkley has advocated for more of these affordable spaces in these communities and is happy with the results. “Affordable child care will help a lot of families in our community. The newly affordable spaces across Alberta will make an incredible difference for working parents by providing high-quality child care at a price they can afford, creating hundreds of jobs and opening up options for a brighter future,” said Bruce Hinkley, MLA for Wetaskiwin-Camrose. Premier Rachel Notley and Children’s Services minister Danielle Larivee announced that 100 new Early Learning and Child Care Centres across the province would be added to the existing 22 centres that opened last year as part of a province-wide pilot project. The investments build on the success of the initial pilot program, which saw 75 affordable child care spaces in Camrose funded at the Kids Campus Daycare Society in 2017. With a total of 7,300 spaces now across the province, this program is expected to create 450 child-care jobs, empower more than 1,400 parents to enter or re-enter the workforce, and put big smiles on thousands of little faces.

Our Mothers By Arnold Malone
In the history of humankind, no one ever became an adult without first having a mother. Mothers are the makers of humanity. It is they who educate, instil, promote, ask for politeness, seek understanding, insist on inclusion and put a band-aid on a knee right
after it was kissed better. Most of us need only to reflect on our own mother to understand the endless work they have undertaken. They rear children, tend the garden, cook meals, clean the house, wash clothes, buy clothing, assist with education, but above all, provide and teach love. I am well aware that the tasks just listed can be assisted or assumed by men, but much of this responsibility gets taken over by a mother’s determination. Sometimes mothers are alone and the father of the children is of little or no support. I am amazed by the work that some mothers undertake to keep their children safe, clothed, fed and educated. Many professional football players attribute their careers to the sacrifices of their mothers. Recently, I heard of a man who wanted to play professional football mostly because he wanted to buy a decent house for his mother. A desired gift for all that she sacrificed for her family. Mothers here in Canada are not the only ones civilizing the young. Around the world, often in squalor conditions, mothers are the steel I-beam of humanity. Picking rice with an infant strapped on their back or walking across a desert carrying a baby in arms and a jug of water on their head are signs of their dedication to the self-prescribed duty of motherhood. One of the reasons why there ought to be more females in politics is because it is they who, by experience, know the essence of what is important in and for life. As the world opens in the acceptance of females in the workplace, it has become clear that there is no job that a man can do that a female can’t. (Sumo wrestling might be one, but that is because of the intelligence of the female.) Mothers now defend our country in battle, weld, fabricate buildings, harvest crops and log trees. Those countries that fail to provide full opportunity for females lose a huge pool of talent and deprive more than half their population of their right of choice. Mothers are the backbone of society. It is they, more than anyone else, who guide their children to grow up in confidence through an improved selfesteem. There is something intrinsic in motherhood that we males fail to understand. I think mothering has a genetic driver. I say that because motherhood has an innate power on more than just humans. As a person who grew up on a farm, I observed the mothering instincts that a cow has for her newborn calf or a clucking hen for her chicks. Some mothers do have bad days. Once we decided to raise a few ducks and got a clutch of duck eggs from a neighbour. Unwittingly, we set them under a brooding hen. That was the start of a miserable parenting experience. Chicks scurry in tight circles and are expected to stay tuck tight around their mother. Ducklings line up behind in long rows. The poor hen spent weeks in non-stop roundups. Worse yet, she took the ducklings for a tour of the farmyard and they spied the reservoir. Oh, oh, water! The ducklings, all in a row, headed straight for the water. Mother hen with ruffled feathers high-stepping on the muddy edge scolded her summer away. Darn, those chicks now-a-days. At any rate, let us salute motherhood and the enormous advances that they have made to the world. Thank you, mothers.

Brand new mom can’t wait to make more memories By Lori Larsen
Brand new mom Marisa Herman doesn’t recall a lot of the details of giving birth on April 9 to now three-and-a-half week old Lucas, because after 16 hours of being in the hospital and going through labour and some assistance from medication and laughing gas, things became a little fuzzy. But the end result was most definitely worth it. At 9:09 p.m., Lucas made his entrance into the world. First child of Marisa and husband Orrie, Lucas weighed in at six pounds 15 ounces and, by all accounts, was perfect. “They (St. Mary’s Hospital staff who assisted in the delivery) said it was pretty much a textbook delivery,” said Marisa with a wide smile, admitting she slept through most of it due to the medication and lack of sleep in the two days preceding the birth. “Basically when I had a contraction, I would stand up but my husband would have to hold me up. Once hard labour hit, adrenaline kicked in though. The nurse asked if I wanted an epidural, but I refused.” Marisa wanted to ensure that the birth was as natural as possible. She said that Orrie was present in the delivery room throughout the entire labour and by her words, “held up really well.” Lucas is the first grandchild and great-grandchild to the large family that consists of Marisa’s parents, grandmother and
three brothers and Orrie’s mother and her husband, aunt and uncle, grandmother and grandfather, two brothers and two halfsisters. “The grandparents and great-grandparents are super excited.” Marisa and Orrie had planned on having children and continuing with another generation to enjoy precious moments spent with family. “With my family, we get together every Sunday, have supper and play games. Any big functions like Christmas and Easter, we always get together, have supper and play games,” said Marisa. It is clear that Lucas will have a great deal of love and support from family who, for the most part, live close by. Marisa exclaimed that Lucas is a pretty good baby who only complains (cries) when he’s hungry, needs to be changed or, oddly enough, when his feet get tangled up. “You can’t swaddle his feet up because he gets angry,” she said with a smile. As all moms will attest, having a newborn can be very taxing and sleep deprivation is not unusual. Marisa is no exception. “If he is sleeping, I try to sleep or if Orrie is home, I will feed Lucas and then hand him over to Orrie so I can go shower.” Once children enter the equation, life is really not the same. Priorities shift as children take over your life and your heart.

“You definitely have to prepare to go out. It isn’t easy to just get up and go anymore.” In spite of the changes, Marisa and Orrie, like many parents before them and many to follow, will adjust. “We are looking forward to all the milestones in our lives now with Lucas,” said Marisa. “And making memories with him as a family–him being able to make memories of baking with his grandparents like I did when I was a child,” she said, fondly remembering baking buns with her own grandmother. As the interview came to an end in less than 20 minutes, Lucas began putting in his own two cents in the form of tiny baby chirps and eventual soft crying. “Oh, and sometimes he just cries to get a little attention. I know he’s fed and changed and nothing is wrong.”
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Marisa Herman holds three-week-old Lucas who was coincidently born four days after Marisa’s mother’s birthday, four days before Marisa’s grandmother’s birthday and nine days (at 9:09 p.m.) before Marisa’s birthday.

Four rules for 4-way stops By Murray Green
Most of the drivers on the road today received their driver’s licence many years ago. The problem is that what was learned in order to get a licence has since been forgotten by some people. With the bridge out of commission on 48th Avenue for awhile, several four-way stops have been added to better move vehicles throughout the City. Over the last few weeks, we have all thought about the strange driving habits of others while driving in various detours. Remember the moment when you come to a fourway stop and are not sure who is going to advance to move first. It can be a frustrating experience in all four directions. Yes, even hazardous. So, follow these four rules. First come, first served. This old rule applies to the road as well as line-ups. At a fourway stop, the first car to
arrive at the intersection receives the right of way. It doesn’t matter where the vehicle is located or what direction it is traveling, this rule will always apply when someone has clearly arrived at the stop sign first. However, still be wary of aggressive or distracted drivers who may not follow this rule. Secondly, right is right, yield to right. When two vehicles arrive at a four-way stop at the same time and are located sideby-side, the vehicle furthest to the right has the right of way. If three vehicles arrive at the same time, the car furthest left should continue to yield until both of the other cars to the right of them have passed. Thirdly, straight over turning. When arriving to an intersection head-tohead with another vehicle, it is important to use signals. When two vehicles arrive at a four-way stop at the same time and they are located head-to-

Keep in mind that if both vehicles are going straight or turning in the same direction, they can both proceed at the same time as they will not cross each other’s path. Lastly, right over left. When two vehicles arrive at a four-way stop at the same time and they are located head-to-head and one of the vehicles intends to turn right and the other intends to turn left, the vehicle turning right has right of way. Move forward slowly before entering the intersection to indicate to other drivers you are making the turn. The driver turning left should wait until the other car has fully passed. This should never happen, but if all vehicles arrive at the same time, use extreme caution! There is no good rule of thumb as to who should go first. However, it is recommended that you wait for the most aggressive driver to make the first move and then proceed with extreme caution using the rules above mentioned before. It’s important to be patient and alert (no texting or falling asleep) when approaching a fourway stop, not just for the sake of others, but for your own safety.

Judge Riemer to speak at the annual prayer breakfast By Murray Green
The eighth annual Camrose City and County Prayer Breakfast will take place on Wednesday, May 16, at 7:30 a.m. at the Camrose Resort Casino. Judge E. Darrell Riemer will address the theme of Deciding to Pray; Praying to Decide. His deep personal faith, his rural roots, a lengthy law career and community involvement combine to make him an ideal candidate for encouraging his listeners in a lifelong practice of prayer.
Growing up on a farm near Vegreville, Riemer learned early to relate personally with the God. He is faithful in good times and bad. It was his faith that grounded him through his years of study at the University of Alberta and has been central to his marriage to Priscilla (nee Risto) for 50 years. Judge Riemer began his law practice in Peace River with Marshall, Normeim and Riemer. He was appointed judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta in 1985, first in the Peace
River area and now in Red Deer. Prayer for wisdom has been a constant for him, while adjudicating some of the province’s most challenging criminal cases. Riemer has served numerous non-profit organizations. He has led and participated in work missions to Jamaica, Nicaragua, Cuba and Ethiopia. He has devoted several years to assisting with the Alberta Premier’s Prayer Breakfast and has attended the Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast in Ottawa and
the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC. He is a world traveler, an avid hunter and a student of some of the world’s greatest leaders including William Wilberforce, Winston Churchill and the explorer Earnest Shackleton. Reeve Don Gregorwich and Mayor Norm Mayer will once again co-host the prayer breakfast. Amelia and Kevin Keech will provide music and members of the Camrose clergy will also partake in the program. Recent world events, as well as the tragic accident
that claimed the lives of 16 Humboldt Broncos hockey team personnel, are stark reminders of the need for communities to gather for prayer and spiritual encouragement. The public is cordially invited to this year’s prayer breakfast. Tickets are on sale at Camrose City Hall, Camrose County office, Wisemen’s Way Bookstore and several Camrose churches. More information can be obtained by calling 780-672-3461 or emailing camroseprayer@ gmail.com.

BRCF grant assists Irma School Submitted
The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a grant for Irma School Enhancement. The grant will be used to fund part of the community commitment to the school rebuilding project, allowing for development of community use facilities within the construction of the school. The grant is from income from the Helen and Doug Coubrough Fund, the Esther and Martin Creasy Fund, the Jean and Cliff Saville Fund and the Foundation’s Community Fund. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects and facilities, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $5,445,000 to support community programs and projects like the Irma School Enhancement Project.

Community paramedics in Camrose By Lori Larsen
Sainte-Marie continues to inspire
Buffy Sainte-Marie is a remarkable and impressive artist. Her music and activism–which are intricately linked–have inspired generations of listeners. Her global stature stems not only from her long career, amazing voice, and bold fashion sense, but also from her important role as a political Buffy Saint-Marie and Indigenous icon. Submitted by Erin As an Indigenous female Sutherland, Cultural musician in the 60s and 70s, Studies/Megan Caldwell, Indigenous Student Buffy Sainte-Marie was a Services, Augustana trailblazer in many ways. A political figure who protested the Vietnam war and brought awareness and voice to the struggles of Indigenous peoples, Sainte-Marie and her music have played an important role in Indigenous activist movements from the 1960s to the present day. As a supporter of social change initiatives led by organizations such as the American Indian Movement and Idle No More, Buffy Sainte-Marie used her music and position to provide these movements with a platform and a voice. Many of her songs, from “My Country ‘Tis of Thy People You’re Dying” (1964) to “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” (1992), address the mistreatment of Indigenous peoples by colonial governments and demonstrate that Sainte-Marie does not shy away from addressing difficult issues. Since the 1960s, her music has raised awareness of the Indigenous experience, a topic not widely discussed in North American society, and especially not at the time her early songs were first recorded. These same songs remain relevant, especially in this era of so-called reconciliation, where many of the concerns of Indigenous people remain unaddressed. Sainte-Marie’s political voice addressed not only the situations of Indigenous peoples, but other issues of the day as well. One of her best known songs, “Universal Soldier” (1964) became an anthem in the fight against the Vietnam War and continues to be relevant to anti-war movements today. More recently, in “No No Keshagesh” (2008), Sainte-Marie speaks to the impact of capitalism and resource extraction on our environment, a topic that remains timely and contentious a decade later. Beyond the political sphere, Sainte-Marie also brought Indigenous voices to the mainstream by including Indigenous languages and cultures in her music, at a time when they were thought to be dead or dying as a result of the assimilation of Indigenous peoples. Beyond including Indigenous languages, many of her songs draw on Indigenous musical practice, including forms of drumming and vocables. Her influence continues in her more recent releases, as she mentors and leads the way for other Indigenous artists. Groups such as A Tribe Called Read and Tanya Tagaq build on her work and continue to push the boundaries of Indigenous music and increase its mainstream presence. Sainte-Marie’s most recent Juno-winning album, Medicine Songs, a compilation of some of her classic hits along with new creations, is intended to effect change. As SainteMarie writes on her website, “This is a collection of front line songs about unity and resistance and I want to put them to work.” Reflecting the title of her album, Sainte-Marie hopes these songs will “be like medicine, to be of some help or encouragement, to maybe do some good.” Sainte-Marie’s work is as important as ever, to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. At a time where communities struggle to create connections and build relationships, hers is a voice that continues to bring awareness to important social issues affecting us all. Listen to her impressive catalogue of music, or even better, catch her live at the Bailey Theatre May 24th for a rare and unique experience. You won’t be disappointed.
On April 24, Alberta Minister of Health Sarah Hoffman and MLA for Wetaskiwin-Camrose Bruce Hinkley visited Bethany Group assisted living facility, Faith House in Camrose to speak to facility residents about the Alberta Health Services Community Health Paramedic program, now available in Camrose. Hoffman and Hinkley visited with Faith House resident Clara Bradley while Camrose and area community paramedic Andrew Agrey demonstrated some of the process done during an in-home assessment. In an effort to ensure the well being of Albertans, specifically seniors and the vulnerable, the provincial government has dedicated $11 million from the Enhancing Care in the Community initiative to the expansion of the Community Paramedic Teams and other community based models of healthcare delivery. Community Response Teams will be located in Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Camrose, Grande Prairie and Peace River. Each teams’ response area will encompass a 50 kilometers geographical area outside their start-stop locations. The Camrose Community Paramedic team is based out of Camrose covering a 50 kilometer area that includes Wetaskiwin and consists of team leader Peter Dry, Conrad Taylor, Andrew Agrey, Jeff Murphy, Ashley Prpick and Krist Haggen. The community paramedics provide medical assessments, diagnostics and treatments in the patient’s place of residence for the purpose of restoring health or minimizing the effects of illness and disability. The program provides mobile community paramedics to seniors and Albertans with chronic conditions. This allows a reduction in the use of ambulance transport, acute care beds and hospital resources, all the while providing valuable medical services right in the patient’s home. Community Paramedicine expands the scope of paramedics’ practice to definitive non-emergent medical management. Agrey described the process. “A call is made to the Edmonton ATR (Assess Treat and Refer Coordination Centre) dispatcher, and it is a paramedic that takes the call, not a regular dispatcher. Then they will triage the call and see what resource is best to send. Sometimes it will be 911 and sometimes they will dispatch us. They provide us with the infor-
mation and then we will attend.” Agrey added that once on site the community paramedic does a full assessment and diagnostic and will speak with the physician or an online doctor to determine what would best suit the patient. “There are times when they (patient) might be too sick and can not stay in their residence so we arrange transport by ambulance.” Agrey noted he worked front line ambulance for nearly 16 years before transitioning over to the community paramedic program when it began in February. “It (the actual calls for service) are a little slower pace and not emergent or urgent care response, so the time is there to do a little more assessment,” said Agrey admitting that it allows for a little more time to develop a rapport with the patient as well.
compassionate frontline workers, helping Albertans get the right care at the right time, right in their own homes.” Each CRT will be staffed by a single Community Paramedic (ACP) with the support of direct physician consultation. The new ACP teams will drive marked SUVs that will not be equipped with lights and sirens. The units will have all the necessary medical equipment to provide diagnostics and treatments in the patient’s home. CRT units will not transport patients to the hospital. The Community Paramedics will not be wearing traditional EMS uniforms. “The Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN) is extremely excited for the opportunity to work with the Community Paramedicine team recruited for the Camrose catchment area,” said Camrose PCN clini-

Faith House resident Bradley spoke about what the program has meant to her. “It is hard for me to get out all the time. I don’t drive any more so unless my son comes and takes me to do things I wouldn’t get anywhere.” Bradley has had the community paramedic visit her in-residence now on a couple of occasions. “The paramedics are very friendly. I can get through it without feeling anything. As far as I am concerned it has worked wonders for me I am happy I have something to go to when I need it. It is there for me.” The additional funding assisted in the establishment of EMS Mobile Integrated Healthcare, the design of Community Response Teams (CRTs) and an Assess Treat and Refer (ATR) Coordination Centre. “When we help Albertans avoid stressful trips to the emergency department, everyone wins,” said associate Minister of Health Brandy Payne in an earlier press release. “These paramedics are effective and
cal director Colleen McKinstry. “A number of the recruits have already shadowed with the PCN healthcare provider team to learn more about our programs and services and discussions are taking place on how best to work together to enhance patient care.” The new program is another valuable tool accessible to Camrose and area. “As a PCN we see the Community Paramedicine team as an enhancement to our health home model,” said Camrose PCN executive director, Stacey Strilchuk. “In the past our physician membership had identified this level of engagement with community paramedics and patients in their home as being a priority and I am encouraged that we are now able to move forward with this partnership. This is just another example of the collaborative relationship that exists between key community stakeholders and I look forward to sharing the success outcomes of this program in the months to come.”

FIDDLE STORM
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Scott Woods and his sister Kendra Norris played together during a concert tour last year. Woods and his band will be back in Camrose for a concert in the United Church, May 23 at 7 p.m. By Murray Green
Renowned Canadian fiddle champion Scott Woods and his All-star Band present Fiddling Up A Storm! The show will be held at the Camrose United Church on Wednesday, May 23 beginning at 7 p.m. This uplifting two-hour Branson-style live show features plenty of Canadian old time fiddle music, traditional country songs, western swing tunes, country gospel favorites, fancy instrumentals, sweet harmonies, smooth vocals,
sensational step dancing, family humor, inspirational stories, and some of Scott’s famous trick fiddling–front and back somersaults and walking on a barrel–all while playing his fiddle. You will hear the flurry of fast fingers on a fiddle or guitar similar to a hurricane or twister, or maybe the calm before the storm. Joining Scott onstage in Fiddling Up A Storm is his sister, Kendra (nee Woods) Norris–a multiinstrumentalist and certainly no stranger to old time fiddling, having won
the Canadian Duet Fiddle Championship title three times with Scott, as well as several solo wins in various classes including the 2016 Canadian Open (19 to 55 division). Also onstage are Canadian Country Music Award Winner and Guitar Player of the Year, Steve Piticco; bass player Peter Sisk, Canadian Country Music Award Winner and Drummer of the Year, Bill Carruthers and champion step dancer 13-yearold Leo Stock. Scott is a two-time winner of the Canadian
Open Fiddle Contest, twotime winner of the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Championship as well as Fiddle Entertainer of the Year. He is known affectionately as ‘The Flippin’ Fiddler’ and tours extensively across Canada and the USA every year raising funds for churches, charities and community service organizations. Scott and the band also tour in Germany. Scott’s dad Merv started playing old time music in 1944 as a youngster. His very first performance was a fundraiser for the local school house just outside of Fergus, Ontario. By 1950, he had formed his own band known as The Merv Woods
Orchestra. They soon became very busy playing for dances, socials, garden parties, weddings, anniversaries and more, many of which were fundraisers. Keeping the tradition started by his dad, Scott and the band have expanded their travels right across the country. Their love of music, fun and family continues to be evident both on and off the stage. Tickets are available at Wisemen’s Way Bookstore (5028-50 Street, Camrose) 780-672-3455, or purchase by phone with a Visa or MasterCard by calling the Scott Woods Band office toll free at 1-855-726-8896.

Bullying Enns bikers group lift local girl’s spirit By Lori Larsen
On May 3, some residents of Camrose could hear the low rumble of motorcycles as they rolled into town supporting young resident Jayda Hunt in her struggle with being bullied. Members of the Bullying Enns biker group from the Edmonton area, took a cool trip down to Camrose, leaving at around 6:30 a.m., to come and give Jayda a lift, both literally and metaphorically, to school in a show of support, caring and to spread awareness that bullying in any form should not be tolerated. Representing the group, rider Les Trepanier spoke on behalf of founder Steve Enns about the importance of showing those who are bullied that there are people out there who care and are behind them. “We want to show that we don’t support violence and to show these kids that there is strength in numbers,” said Trepanier. Trepanier, along with other riders that morn-
ing, stressed that this is a friendly movement and not intended to scare anyone, but to empower people (children) being bullied and help them find their own strength. Trepanier noted that the riders are not there to address the bully or cause a problem. Their mandate is to help the child (person) being bullied and give them a much needed boost to their ego. Seven big bikes showed up with even bigger-hearted riders, including a local biker, to partake in what can only be described as a ride in the right direction. The group met up with Jayda, her mother Jessa and grandfather in a westend parking lot. Jayda appeared a little nervous at first but was soon grinning from ear to ear when she realized these people were here for her. “I feel so lucky,” said Jayda shyly about the support she was receiving from complete strangers. And when asked what she would say to others who may be bullied, she replied with the

innocence of a nine-yearold, “It’s not nice to be a bully.” The riders introduced themselves to Jayda, gave her, her very own Bullying Enns t-shirt, then Trepanier fitted her with a helmet and helped her onto the back of his iron steed. The group roared up the engines, kicked up the stands and rode off escorting Jayda to school in a fashion befitting a brave young girl. Some members of the Bullying Enns group remained around to escort Jayda home after school as well.

Bullying Enns is now going into its second year completing rides for anyone who feels they are the victim of bullying. A message goes out on social media inviting other bikers to come along for the ride and help boost the child’s ego. In the first year, Bullying Enns completed six rides. This year they have already surpassed that number. For more information on the Bullying Enns initiative, visit Steve Enns Facebook page m.facebook. com/steve.enns.56.

Barbecue showdown By Lori Larsen
The smell of barbecue is enough to make most people’s mouths water, but imagine it magnified by several professional barbecue showdown competitors. This summer, during a special family festival, Camrose residents and visitors won’t have to imagine it, the smell will be real. The Wild Rose Coop Battle River BBQ Showdown will be setting up grills on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 18 and 19 east of the Camrose Recreation Centre in the Rudy Swanson Park area. On Aug. 18, there will be a Saturday night children’s movie that will be projected on a large blow-up screen in the children’s play area. The main stage will be set up at the end of the food vendor alley and will feature live entertainment from local performers and a fiery chili pepper eating contest. “It’s going to be a lot of fun because we are going to be doing a semifinal on Saturday and a final on Sunday. THE JUDGMENT “Canada’s heritage as a nation under God is plainly carved on the walls of our Parliamentary buildings. They serve as a rebuke as well as an encouragement to all Canadians that God continues to call His people to covenant faithfulness”. (Quote by Steven Martins)
Christianity was always a part of Canadian history. Canada, regarded as a Christian nation, was totally devoted to the teaching of God’s Word. Bible scripture is inscribed on the Peace Tower and other Parliamentary buildings. The memorial chamber of Parliament refers to Bible passages: Jerimiah 23:5, Nahum 1:7 and Jerimiah 3:17-18. On our coat of arms Psalms 72:8 is quoted: “He shall have dominion also from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth”. Scriptures inspired the Fathers of Confederation to name this nation ‘The Dominion of Canada’. The founding fathers gave this nation totally over to Yahweh, God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and His Son, Yeshua Hamashiach (Jesus the Messiah). July 1st was called ‘Dominion Day’ to recognize His {Jesus} sovereignty over Canada. In 1983 the passing of a private members bill with only 13 members present, proposed July 1st to be named Canada Day. We then began to serve the creation (Canada) not the Creator (God).
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Jim Dyer, centre and his children 10-year-old Paige, left, and 12-year-old Porter toast the upcoming Battle River BBQ Showdown.
“The Camrose Kinsmen Club is putting on this free event,” said Kinsmen member and BBQ competitor (not at this event) Jim Dyer. “It is a Kansas City Barbeque Society barbecue competition, which is essentially the pro circuit of barbecue.” Teams will come to Camrose from all over Western Canada and possibly even the Northern US States to compete. As exciting as the barbecue competition is itself, the two-day event promises so much more for all members of the family to enjoy. “We (Kinsmen) decided what Camrose needs is a family festival.” Besides the barbecue showdown, there will be a show and shine car show, food vendor alley, trade show, live local entertainment featured on two stages, locally sponsored beer gardens (for the adults) and a massive children’s play zone which will include a variety of huge inflatable play structures. “I don’t think anyone in Camrose has seen something to this magnitude for a children’s play area,” grinned Dyer. “The Boys and Girls Club of Camrose have come on board to help us with operating the play area, which will also include a variety of games and other fun activities.” The children’s play zone will be located in the soccer pitches just west of the
Carolina Reapers (which have been named the World’s hottest pepper in the new Guinness World Records). It’s hotter than hot.” The second stage will be set up at the beer gardens. This whole event is all about showcasing local vendors,” said Dyer, encouraging local vendors to contact him or visit the webpage at www.battleriverbbqshowdown.com. “The trade show hopes to attract a minimum of 40 vendors,” noted Dyer. Some of the food vendors will likely have some authentic BBQ for purchase, however the teams competing in the Showdown will not be selling or offering samples of their food. “As a spectator, if you want some tips and advice on barbecuing, there are always teams that are more than happy to talk to the public–barbecue ambassadors. In fact, there will be sponsored teams there that are actually paid to do that. “Team to team though, no one gives away their secrets,” laughed Dyer. Judging for the barbecue contest will be done by official Kansas City Barbeque Society judges. For more information or if you are interested in being part of the trade show, contact Jim at email jimdyer@rocketmail.co or by telephone at 780-608-0025.
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau initiated ‘The Charter of Rights and Freedoms’. This created a social and legal revolution in Canada expanding the rights of minorities, placing them on a level playing field with Christian doctrine. It transformed the nature of criminal investigations and prosecutions and subjected the will of Parliament and legislatures to judicial scrutiny. The charter made the state sovereign. We became a country no longer in submission to God and His law. We became a law unto ourselves to be our own creators of morality and reality, such as the legalization of abortion and same sex marriage. Life and marriage were redefined. Inscribed in stone in Canada’s Parliament buildings is written: “Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand firm” (Bible – Ephesians 6:13). The evil day is here and Canada has become an enemy of God the Creator. The Bible states in Jude 1-25: “Certain men have crept in unnoticed, who were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord having saved the people out of the land of Egypt afterward destroyed those who did not believe. Angels who left their proper domain reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for judgment of the great day. Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh are set forth as an example suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Romans 1:21-32 states: “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a
lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.” The death referred to is eternal placement in the Lake of Fire.
I speak to the young. I speak to the millennials. I speak to you all who have been indoctrinated by an educational system whose elected boards have cast God out of the schools. Teachers have taught evolution as being fact when in truth evolution is only a theory. Have you been taught the Ten Commandments? Have you been taught the Lord’s Prayer? Have you ever heard about Jesus and how the world was created through Him? Have you been taught that you are not a god? Have you been told you are His creation? Have you been taught that He came to this earth in a body of human flesh, the son of a virgin, to die on a Roman cross so that His shed blood serves as your personal salvation and safety from eternal damnation and placement in the lake of fire? Jesus created you. Jesus died for you. Jesus will judge you. Jesus is the innocent Lamb of God. Jesus is the Lion of the tribe of Judah. Jesus is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. Jesus calls you today. Accept Him as your Savior. Believe He rose from the dead. Tell all your friends about Jesus because every knee will bow before Him. Jesus is returning soon to gather those who believe in Him. It is called the ‘Rapture’. It will happen in a split second of time and if you are left behind, a nonbeliever, you will become a part of a world and live in an evil system beyond your worst nightmares. Not only Canada but the entire world will be without the true and living God. The decision is yours, and remember, you are either with Him or against Him. There is no grey area. You are either with Christ or you are antichrist. You will stand alone in front of God. – Vern Peterson If your wish is for the continuation of the newspaper articles and God would have you support the placement of the articles, please make your cheques payable to the ‘House of Prayer’ and enclose your return address along with your gift. Q.
How can I establish a “Fund” with the Battle River Community Foundation?
A.
A Fund may be launched with as little as $1,000 and a pledge to grow the Fund to $10,000 within ten years. Additional contributions may be made monthly, yearly or as a onetime donation. When the fund reaches $10,000, a permanent endowment fund, named as you wish, is established. It will then start giving back to the community in accordance with your instructions, forever.

IN MEMORY OF
Clifford Magnus Bakke 1932 ~ 2018 Cliff Bakke was born to Clarence and Magdalena Bakke at Rosalind, Alberta on October 1, 1932, a twin to his sister Hilda. He grew up in the Montrose district east of Rosalind and attended Montrose and Rosalind schools along with his sisters and brother. Cliff loved sports of all kinds. He and his siblings competed and won many ribbons and awards at track meets and ball tournaments. When he was about 14, he had a very special horse which he entered into races and events, even one in Edmonton, and his horse usually came away the winner. He sure loved that horse and was so proud of him; he still talked about him in the last weeks of his life. Later on, he loved curling and won lots of prizes, and was an avid fisherman and big game hunter. When Dad was home from work as we kids were growing up, we were guaranteed that the television was on football or hockey, so he taught us all to love sports too, whether we liked it or not. In July 1953, Cliff married his childhood sweetheart Charlotte Batke of the Albury district and it wasn’t long before they had seven kids, all within 13 years. Our parents farmed for the first 12 years of their married life, then tried acreage living near Camrose and New Norway before finally settling in Camrose in 1979. Cliff is survived by his wife Charlotte; and all seven of his children: Christine Ermineskin of Whitehorse, Yukon, Deborah (Keith) Tollefson of Ohaton, Daniel of Faro, Yukon, Maureen (Dave) Mason of Edson, Darryl (Tracy) of Millet, Susan (Jim) Augustin of New Norway, and Roger (Michele) of Salmon Arm, BC. He is also survived by 28 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; his sisters Dorothy Boden and Evelyn Thompson. He was predeceased by his parents, his twin sister Hilda Zimmerman and his brother Edward. Cliff lived in his own home until February 2014 when he suffered a fall and moved into Deer Meadows and then Viewpoint, both managed by Bethany Group. He passed away peacefully in St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose, on April 19, 2018 at the age of 85 years. In memory of our Dad, husband, grandfather and brother, there will be a graveside service and luncheon later in the spring. The family wishes to thank St. Mary’s Hospital Palliative Care Unit, Drs. Minders and Botha, and all the very capable and compassionate nurses who helped our Dad to be comfortable during the last four months of his life. We would also like to thank all the caregivers at Deer Meadows and Viewpoint, as well as Burgar Funeral Home for their help and professional service. Please feel free to make any donations in memory of Clifford Magnus Bakke to St. Mary’s Palliative Care Unit or The Bethany Group.

COUTURE, Dyanna Marie Dyanna Marie Couture, beloved wife of Richard Couture of Standard, passed away suddenly and entered Heaven’s gates on April 7, 2018 at the age of 34 years. Dyanna was born on March 27, 1984 in Camrose, Alberta. Dyanna met Richard, the love of her life, in 2009 and they married on January 1, 2014. Besides her loving husband Richard (stepsons Wesley and Normand), she will be lovingly remembered by her family: mother Patricia Noble and brothers Dale, Rick, Shaun, Dan and Dallas Noble. She was predeceased by her father Ted Noble on February 1, 2013. Dyanna was a loving wife, friend and minister and will also be dearly missed by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and her four-legged fur babies. Dyanna ventured on her path in life with the study of law. After a brief period, she got a higher calling. She knew for certain she was meant to be a minister. During her short time with us, she made a tremendous impact on the lives of many from her work with young hearts in Sunday school to the numerous congregation members she guided during Sunday sermon. When she was not helping others, she enjoyed crocheting and challenging herself to see what crocheting project she could accomplish. “O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” – Micah 6:8 A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Standard Nazareth Lutheran Church (1020 1st Street, West Standard, Alberta T0J 3G0) at 2:00 p.m. A lunch will follow at the Standard Community Hall (across the road from the church). Augustana presents report to community during Soiree By Lori Larsen
On April 24, University of Alberta Augustana Campus held its annual Spring Soirée and Report to the Community at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. Administration was joined by nine Augustana students in the presentation of the report. Third-year global and development studies student, Melissa Wilk, emceed the evening and began by acknowledging the Treaty Six territory and traditional meeting grounds that Augustana stands upon. University of Alberta Augustana Campus dean, Allen Berger, welcomed everyone during opening remarks leading into his report to the community on the 2017-18 year.
the Arlene and Alver Person Pedway and the complete renovation of three science labs and related support spaces in the science extension. The new learning commons on the second floor of the library was also completed in 2017-18. “Augustana has brought together all our student services in a central location that includes comfortable spaces for a formal or an informal meeting, studying, workshops and academic support programming.” In speaking of Augustana’s version of the Long Range Development Plan (LRDP), Berger indicated his own focus regarding the LRDP is on residence halls (housing) priorities and academic facility improvement. He related Augustana’s vision on the addition of an astronomical observatory at Augustana’s Miquelon Lake Research Station. “Our vision with an observatory is that we will serve not only our own students and faculty, but the larger community as well.” Accomplishments

Staff and faculty
Berger recognized six retirees Michelle Pratt (human resources), Norma Williams (social sciences), Shirley Loewen (dean’s office), Milton Schlosser (music professor), Rani-Villem Palo (history professor) and Roger Galenza (all conference curling coach). “All of these individuals have left a mark on this campus whether in the form of friendly and expert service to colleagues, students and the public, inspired classroom teaching, mentorship and leadership or inspirational artistic performance.” Berger also welcomed seven new staff members to Augustana consisting of Erin Sutherland (assistant professor, cultural studies), Francois Bastien (assistant professor, management), Mi-Young Kim (assistant professor, computing science), Greg King (assistant professor, environmental science), Stephanie Oliver (assistant professor, English), Diego Coraiola (assistant professor, management) and Ian Wilson (assistant professor, religious studies and director of the Chester Ronning Centre)and introduced the new assistant dean advancement, Debbie McIntosh, who arrived on Feb. 1. Berger reported on two major improvements at Augustana which included
In recognizing the many accomplishments at Augustana through the 2017-18 year, Berger highlighted eight in particular. “First, Augustana faculty members published three books and a minimum of 33 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious academic journals,” said Berger adding that the faculty also received research funding that surpassed the previous records for funded grants in a single year “In August, Augustana hosted the highly successful international Kodály Symposium. Music teachers and musicians came to Camrose from literally all over the world and reported this was one of the largest and best conferences ever.” The third accomplishment Berger conveyed involved a meeting with Maskwacis Cultural College (MCC) president Dr. Claudine Louis and other administrators and faculty. “We are entering the early stages into new collaboration in English, social work, management and environmental science and continuing to build a strong relationship between our libraries along with a transfer pathway for MCC students once they have completed their studies in Maskwacis.” Berger spoke about the Pathway Program which provides senior students the ability to apply their learning to real world challenges, issues or problems in rural or indigenous communities. “This year, we selected our first three pathway scholars, all of whom will be undertaking projects this coming summer.”
The fifth accomplishment (s) he addressed was the continuing theme of Community Outreach, reporting that Augustana once again hosted the Reading University (ninth year), Easter Eggstravaganza (seventh year), Battle River School Division and Our Lady Mount Pleasant Catholic School Grade 7 Science Fair and continuing collaboration with Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. He spoke about the Augustana education programs for rural and municipal leaders, indicating the programs served over 260 leaders from 63 different Alberta communities. “This past year, we launched a new Advanced Municipal Leadership Certificate.” Seventh on the list of accomplishments covered by Berger was the Chester Ronning Centre-sponsored live, video-streamed presentation and conversation with former CIA employee and US government contractor, Edward Snowden. Rounding up the accomplishments, Berger spoke about the completion of the second year, deliver-
The feedback is mostly positive, but we are also identifying some areas where there is need for improvement.” In demonstrating the specifics of how the firstyear seminars and threeweek courses worked, two professors accompanied by testimonials by students made presentations. Assistant professor of religious studies Joe Wiebe, who presented a first-year seminar in September entitled Sex Love and Human Soul, was joined by biology student Madison Koberstein and business economics student Kody Hynek who shared their personal experiences on the first-year seminar program. “Not only did it equip me with the proper skills and abilities, but it instilled a confidence in myself of being able to fully function at the academic level,” said Hynek. Professor of history and social science department chair Geoff Dipple, who presented a threeweek course on the subject of genocide, was joined by biology student Isabelle Stamm. “It was a really interesting experience taking this course. Arrive and Thrive. “During this orientation we want to talk about important issues, have fun and connect students in large and small groups while giving space for informal connections to occur.” An orientation passport that includes a series of events or activities aimed at achieving the mission of the orientation program was also created. Other student services added this year include a Nurse Navigator program, in collaboration with Camrose Primary Care Network that has an on-campus nurse navigator, Sally Wilson, RN promoting and improving student access to the Camrose healthcare system, the new learning commons on the second floor of the library and the new Living and Learning Community House. The five students selected for the Living and Learning Community House program, Candice Huculiak, Jessica Logan, Betsy-Sonia, Mary Cairns and Alanna Blanchette, spoke briefly on their experiences throughout the year. Blanchette said the experience for her was

ing a co-curricular certificate program in building a capacity for reconciliation. “This program is an important part of Augustana’s commitment to take seriously the action steps recommended by Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.” These were a few of the many amazing accomplishments noted Berger. way things were structured in this course, I didn’t feel like I would have any sort of mental breakdowns. Everything was very nicely spaced, I wasn’t being rushed,” said Stamm. Student Life
Augustana executive director of student life Randal Nickel shared some of the initiatives of student life from 2017-18. Nickel explained that the changes made to student orientation included an online orientation Getting Ready For You, with information students can access prior to arriving at Augustana as well as a new campus orientation,
about learning the power of diversity. “This experience taught me about what diversity really is and what it can do for a community. As an international student, Betsy-Sonia said the experience was a good way for her to be able to integrate into Canadian society. On a final note, Hutton said the Living Learning Community House would more accurately be described as the Living Learning Community Home. “We will carry what we have learned and what we have experienced with us for the rest of our lives.” Continued on page 27

Berger acknowledged that the past year was not just a year of accomplishments, but also a year with difficult challenges. “Augustana, like other faculties and units within the universities, was asked to reduce its budget for the 2018-19 fiscal year by four per cent. The challenge for Augustana was roughly five per cent or over $1 million. “We are facing this challenge creatively to the greatest extent possible collegiately and with the determination to emerge on the far side, a resilient campus that still provides an excellent undergraduate experience, remains in touch with its core values and is managing to preserve an impressive sense of community.” Berger addressed two specific budgetary decisions including the formation of the Curriculum Review Research Committee, which will evaluate how to make Augustana more attractive to students from urban areas and outof-province as well as how to strengthen core program and the removal of university funding for biathlon and cross country skiing. He acknowledged the importance of these Nordic sports to the history and culture of Camrose, but noted that they have suffered from declining rates of participation and inadequate philanthropic support and said that consideration be given to how the sports can be maintained through other options. Berger’s closing message was to say thank you. “Here at Augustana we are all blessed by the support this campus receives from the Camrose community.”

Cadillac hearse still classy after all these years By Murray Green
Burgar Funeral Home purchased a brand new black 1969 Cadillac hearse with blue interior and the Crown Royals Landau Hearse conversion, to better serve the community in both funeral processions and ambulance transports. “Alver (Person) ordered the car through Sorenson Distributors. When we (Rod and his wife Vi) picked it up it had Burgar Funeral Home engraved on the dash. We picked up the car just south of Toledo, Ohio at Lima. That’s where the coach company had their factory. I flew down and drove the car back,” recalled Rod Madison, who worked at Burgar for many years. “They gave me a tour of the factory. They bring in the Cadillac frame with a steering wheel and chassis, and then assemble the coach right at the factory. I don’t remember everything, But I do remember that most of the body work was done by hand. We speciality ordered how the back door opened. Because of the way it would be parked in the garage, we wanted the door to open from right to left. It is much easier to load from curbside that way as well.” Rod didn’t drive straight home with the new car. “The car was brand new and modern, so we were asked to stop in Winnipeg to put the car on display at a funeral director convention. After the convention, one of the directors asked me if I had room to bring back a casket for him. We were going right past his place, so I said sure that’s fine. I stopped for gas along the way and the attendant came out and said that it was a pretty nice car. He asked if I had anybody in there (meaning if someone was in the back). I said only my wife,” laughed Rod. John Person, Alver’s son and longtime Burgar owner, indicated that the present hearse opens opposite and isn’t as handy. “That car was my baby. It was my job to keep it nice and clean. I took a lot of pride in that car. I washed it pretty much every day, every time we took it out it had to be washed again,” Rod said. Back in the day, the shiny new hearse was more than a funeral vehicle. “It

had a jump seat in the back on the right side (a pull up seat used for a medical attendant when caring for a patient). The other thing is that it had eight rollers on the floor in the back. If you flipped them over you had a chrome flat surface. You used the roller for the casket and a flat surface for a stretcher,” Rod explained. “I got a kick out of the jump seat used by the paramedics. The new ones (hearse) don’t have that,” added John. It was used as an ambulance from 1969 to about 1972, when the city took over ambulance services. The previous car, an early 1950-55 model, was used a lot as an ambulance prior to the new purchase. “I remember as a kid, that we had a round red light to use for when it was an ambulance,” recalled John. Rod clarified that was actually used on the station wagon, a back-up vehicle used when an ambulance and funeral car was needed at the same time. The hearse was never used as an ambu-
lance when a funeral was taking place. “I loved the interior of the Cadillac. As a kid, I thought of it as a spaceship. On the upper console it had all of these switches including one for the siren,” continued John. “I can recall one situation where we were out on a farm in the Bawlf area and this excited women phoned and her mother apparently was ill, and she needed some help. We went out with the funeral coach and backed up to the front door and she looks out and said ‘I didn’t tell you she was dead yet, did I?’ so I chuckled,” said Rod. “Sometimes I had to take one hat off and put on another. It actually wasn’t very pleasant at times. If we were at a funeral people had to call Hoveland (now Weber Funeral Home) for an ambulance. We helped each other out.” In 1969, it was a two man show at Burgar with Alver and Rod. “Al’s wife would be here answering phones when we were at a funeral service. Previous to
that, Marg Burgar would be in the office. She was Rod Burgar’s wife and Rod was the son of the founder Hiram Burgar,” explained Rod. Burgar Funeral Home was started by Hiram Burgar in the back of his hardware store in 1906. “My
father Al, started with Rod Burgar in 1959 and Rod passed away in 1962. My dad took over the business with Marg until she left in 1965. Then Rod Madison came in 1967,” continued John. Continued on page 30

Lorenz joins MacEwan Griffins basketball squad By Murray Green
The MacEwan Griffins men’s basketball team added Griffin Lorenz of the École Camrose Composite High School Trojans to their 2018 recruiting class. Griffin is the son of former University of Alberta
Augustana men’s basketball head coach Stacy Lorenz. Griffin, a 6-foot-2-inch guard, led the Trojans to back-to-back Alberta 3A high school provincial finals and comes with the added sports pedigree of also being a very good southpaw baseball pitch-
er. He is entering MacEwan’s Commerce program. “Griffin is a dynamic guard who can impact the game in a number of ways,” said coach Eric Magdanz of Lorenz, whose father coached the UAA men’s basketball team until 2004 and is a pro-
fessor. “He is a smart player who can fit well into our system. He does a little bit of everything offensively with the ability to both score and create for his teammates. “As a lefty, he brings a different style of play that challenges defences to adapt.
I believe Griffin can develop into a key player in our program.” The MacEwan University Griffins have 16 athletic teams in eight sports. The university’s teams compete in the Canada West and Alberta Colleges Athletic Conferences.

Later John and Reg, Rod’s son, were partners in the business. “I worked in Calgary before coming here and I was sitting around telling my colleagues that my dad would often load up for a 2 p.m. funeral and then drive home for lunch and then go to the funeral. The hearse was often parked in front of our house. They couldn’t believe that,” shared John. The car was re-painted and repaired by Gord Graham in the 1980s and was reupholstered by Russ Greipl in the early ‘90s. The Cadillac was used at Burgar until about 1993. “I was responsible for one of the first dents in the car. I was about an 11-year-old at the time. The car was sitting
in the back driveway and I was playing in it when I must have put it into neutral and it rolled and hit the telephone pole,” revealed John. The car was eventually replaced. “Reg and I brain stormed to decide what to do with this vehicle because it had such a long history in the community. We picked up a new one, so we donated it to the museum,” said John. The hearse is housed at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum, where it has been on display ever since. The Cadillac has also been used in several parades and Founders Days events since its retirement from active duty. “It was a beautiful car to drive. With it’s extended wheel base, it had a smooth ride to it,” concluded Rod.

Tsunamis lifesaving club brings waves of medals By Murray Green
The medal haul was enormous. The Camrose Tsunamis Lifesaving Club captured 17 medals at the Alberta and Northwest Territories Lifesaving Junior Games in Lethbridge on April 14 and 15. “This year we focused on cranking up the intensity a little bit in practices and we also added an extra practice throughout the week, which made a big difference,” said cocoach Carter Rolston, also an Augustana student. “We also had a larger team this year, which helped a lot as well.” The Tsunamis featured 19 athletes that came home with seven gold, four silver and six bronze with several athletes setting personal bests. “We have a lot of good athletes. Most belong to the Camrose Sea Serpents swim club as well. It was nice to have athletes with that competitive advantage,” said Carter, a former CCHS student. “The events are lifesaving skills incorporated into swimming skills.” The lifesaving club placed fifth overall out of 14 clubs in their second year of competing with this group of swimmers. The club made a huge improvement over last year’s 11th place finish. “Both AJ and myself are the most proud of their work ethic, dedication, teamwork and sportsmanship,” added Carter. “At provincials, they thanked the timers and shaking their hands. As a coach, it was just great to see. In sports you get a chance to build character, instill a good work ethic and develop dedication. When you have athletes like this, it is a lot easier to coach. That is why we had so much success.” William Allaway-Brager earned six medals in the boys 12 and 13 age group. He reaped gold in the manikin relay, gold in medley relay, silver in the obstacle relay and silver line in throw relay. William added

Report all falls With spring (finally) here, many of us are thinking about our gardens. And with our pretty petunias and marigolds come...weeds. And the worst part is, the more we leave them, the more they grow and wreak havoc on those pretty flowers. In the medical world, falls are our weeds. In fact, if every weed represented a Canadian who suffered from a fall, we would have over 70,000 of them to deal with each year. These falls cost Canadians over $2 billion. Worse yet, these weeds have teeth. There are over 30,000 hip

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Camrose Business Watch initiated By Lori Larsen
The Eyes on Camrose program initiated by Camrose Police Service is catching on. More and more residents are doing their part in keeping Camrose a safe community. Thus far, the program has launched, and in some instances re-launched, five successful citizen-involved initiatives and is now introducing the sixth: Camrose Business Watch. “Business Watch is a program that allows businesses to keep in touch with what type of crime is occurring that affects the business community,” said Camrose Police Service crime prevention/community relations Constable Kelly Bauer. “For example, if a business is caught with a counterfeit bank note or a certain type of fraud, that information can be shared to the Business Watch group. In sharing that information, it can help prevent others from falling victim to the same crime.”

WELCOME TO THE
2018 Golfing Season Also changing significantly are the rates being charged for season’s passes. They are now more affordable. The new, lower pricing is being offered to attract more golfers, particularly families and seniors. There’s a fresh feeling of renewal and vibrancy at the club.
C
amrose Golf Course is shaking off the chill of a long, harsh winter, getting ready to welcome golfers of all ages and skill levels, bringing a new sense of enthusiasm and energy. New general manager and CPGA head pro, Dean Dereniuk, is overseeing some significant changes at the clubhouse this year. He and food and beverage manager, Scott Anderson, are revamping the way the city-owned golf course has done business in previous years. The upstairs restaurant will focus on serving the golfers who come to the course. A simple, quick menu at a fair price, will be available. Chicken wings, soup and sandwiches, burgers, BLTs, dry ribs, nachos, beef dips and wraps will make up the core of what’s being offered. In addition to the upstairs service, the pro shop will feature a self-serve food station where golfers can grab a coffee or a cold drink and sandwich before heading to out to play. In previous years the restaurant was operated by an independent contractor, as was the pro shop. This year Dean will oversee both as a full-time City of Camrose employee. It’s a significant change to the business model that had been employed at the golf course. The pro shop will carry a limited selection of clothing, which Dean says is
“We want the golf course to be a truly community course,” says Dean.” We want to create some excitement, to get people talking about golfing here. It’s a beautiful course and we hope more people will come out this year to see how much fun it is to golf here.” Toward that end, junior golfers were able to join in the pre-season for only $100 in an effort to bring younger players to the course with their families. The promotion was a terrific success.

Canadian-made. There also will be golf accessories such as tees, balls and gloves but the selection of clubs will be much smaller than previous years.
Dean is also looking to create more of a buzz in the upstairs of the clubhouse by going after smaller functions and groups for meetings and fun, non-competitive golf outings. This pursuit of smaller groups to utilize the clubhouse facilities will continue into the off-season. But for now the focus is on getting more players out onto the course, to create a welcoming atmosphere for all skill levels and to put more fun into playing the Camrose Golf Course.
