Tourism Camrose to host entrepreneur startup seminar By Lori Larsen
The Tourism Entrepreneur Startup Seminar (TESS) is coming to Camrose on June 7. The free seminar is focused on assisting the Province’s tourism entrepreneurs succeed in their first years of operation. The seminar will take place from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Wahkohtowin Lodge at the University of
Alberta Augustana Campus. “The purpose of the seminar is to provide assistance with start up, visitor readiness and accessing resources for pre-visitor and visitor-ready companies to help them become more successful,” said Tourism Camrose executive director Jennifer Filip. “We will be discussing industry issues including seasonality, financing and
marketing, and there will be take-home workbooks for each participant as well as a short experts’ panel.” Travel Alberta will be doing the majority of the presentations in conjunction with Alberta Culture and Tourism who will also be presenting information on the resources available to assist small businesses. According to Business Development and Investment Attraction with
Alberta Culture and Tourism director Bruce Tannas, the seminar offers support to fledgling tourism entrepreneurs at the time they need it most. “One of the main reasons for early business failure is the lack of business and industry knowledge.” Advanced registration for the seminar is required and subject to availability. Irvine’s life saved due to organ transplant By Ron Pilger
Morris Irvine is once again actively living life. Seven years ago, the life of a man who had worked in the same industry for 33 years, who doubled as a bus driver and loved being a rodeo volunteer, was on the line. Morris, who had suffered from rheumatic fever when he was nine years of age, and whose health was likely negatively impacted from workplace hazards, coupled with 40 years of heavy smoking resulted in COPD taking a toll on both Irvine’s lungs. The untimely death of a young active outdoorsman in 2011 meant a second chance of living for this resident of Elk Point. A successful double lung transplant took place at the U of A Hospital. While waiting with his wife Fae in the physiotherapy department at the hospital, Morris brought up the topic of giving back to recognize his new beginning with renewed health. The couple chatted with other patients, also beneficiaries of donated organs. Tom Matthews and Harvey Nelson, also double lung recipients, and the Irvines settled on a novel trail ride as the way to raise organ and tissue donation awareness. One year later in 2013,
the first annual 2nd Chance Trail Ride took place on Iron Horse Trail from Lindberg to Elk Point with horseback riders and wagons from far and wide, congregating for common good. Over the years, the ride has grown in terms of numbers of riders and in stature. Money raised has allowed partnership with the GoodHearts Foundation for the opening and maintenance of four apartments across from the U of A Hospital.
Transplant recipients enjoy the use of these premises during their recovery from surgery. More recently a new initiative involves placing signage along major roadways and in hockey and curling rinks across northern Alberta. Two new treadmills have been gifted to the University Hospital Foundation as a way to support transplant services. Direct financial assistance has been given to trans-
plant recipients in need as well. This year, Fae and Morris and other recipients of donated tissue and organs have made appearances at an impressive number of Alberta Registry offices in the province, setting up a display to publicize the 2nd Chance Trail Ride, to openly talk about organ and tissue donation and to remind clients to register to be a donor. The Camrose Reg-
istry office was the last stop in this endeavour for 2018. The Irvines were at the local registry on Friday, April 27. According to manager Karen Dammann, turnout was high, interest strong and sign-ups to the donor registry database plentiful because of the appearance of the couple who now get a prized second chance of living life to the full. All because a caring and thoughtful individual signed his donor card.

Hysteria of Def Leppard and Camrose band Godfrey Blaque will be performing on the Bailey Theatre stage on Saturday, June 2 at 7:30 p.m. Hysteria is from Vancouver and tributes hits of Def Leppard in a rock show. Hysteria was the fourth studio album by English hard rock band Def Leppard, released on August 3, 1987 and was the band’s best-selling album, selling over 25 million copies worldwide, including 12 million in the US, and producing seven hit singles. The album charted at #1 on both the Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart. Hysteria was produced by Robert John “Mutt” Lange. Lange would later produce his now ex-wife Canadian Shania Twain in country music with the albums The Woman in Me and Come On Over. The title of the album was thought up by drummer Rick Allen, referring to his 1984 auto accident and the ensuing worldwide media coverage surrounding it. It is also the last album to feature guitarist Steve Clark before his death, although songs co-written by him would appear on the band’s next album, Adrenalize. Local band Godfrey Blaque has a history of playing classic rock from the ’60s and ’70s that gets people on the dance floor. Godfrey Blaque includes lead singer Jan Nowakowski, Dennis Gustavson on lead guitar, Jim and Dave Lamb on drums and bass guitar and Jim Hough on keyboards. The five-piece band fills the theatre with rich vocals and smooth sounds.

Downtown businesses showcased By Lori Larsen
It’s one of the busiest sales days of the year for many downtown Camrose businesses as they schedule extra staff, stock up the shelves and break out the decorations for the 61 annual Jaywalkers’ Jamboree. Bridget Lennartsson, owner/operator of Vinesation located in the middle of 50 Avenue in Downtown Camrose, is excited to be participating in the store’s fifth Jaywalkers’ Jamboree. “We actually opened our doors for the very first time on the first day of the Jaywalkers’ five years ago,” said Bridget. “We didn’t even have the stickers up or the paper off the windows. We did it that morning.” And despite it nearly not happening, that decision came with no regrets. “We (the store) chose that because of the volume of people we knew would be downtown for the event. It was crazy busy.” Jaywalkers’ boasts the reputation of sales and bargains. Even with the addition, over the years, of a more carnival atmosphere, the event is still well known for the retail shopping and good deals. “A lot of people come for the deals,” noted Bridget. “The sales are fantastic. Some of the stores even
save merchandise for the sales so they are sure to have some deals for the customers.” Bridget estimated that the sales volume for Jaywalkers’ is anywhere from three to four times a regular Saturday. “It is one of our biggest days, very comparable to Midnight Madness, and the volume has stayed the same whether it rains or shines.” This year, a Chef’s Tent will be located in front of Vinesation and will feature chef Kevin Zellweger preparing organic croissausages. The staff at Vinesation has also been happy to participate in each year’s theme for Jaywalkers’. “We won a prize the year it was the ’70s theme for the store, as well as one of the staff won for best dressed,” said Bridget, adding they will most likely be participating in this year’s Mardi Gras theme. Like other downtown events, Jaywalkers’ has a knack for bringing many of the downtown merchants even closer as they share ideas and band together to develop the best experience possible for their customers. “Many businesses really count on Jaywalkers’. It wouldn’t be Jaywalkers’ if it wasn’t on Main Street.”
Bridget said it is an opportunity to see people she hasn’t seen in a long time including the old standbys such as the Kinsmen and the corn-on-thecob booth attendees. Jaywalkers’ originated as a festival to celebrate downtown merchants and build an awareness among residents and visitors to Camrose of the unique, down home services and exciting opportunities that the downtown core has to offer. “There are so many new people coming in and out of Camrose. It brings an awareness to the downtown businesses and people get to see what a beautiful little treasure we have in Camrose. We get nonstop new people coming every day talking about what a beautiful downtown Camrose has.” Bridget concluded with a shout out to Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce for all the hard work they put into making Jaywalkers’ a success. “It begins with the breakfast the Chamber puts on. It’s a real drawing card and the Chamber also tries to bring in local vendors and feature great entertainment. “It is very festive and it’s so much fun being able to see all the people.”

Jaywalkers’ Jamboree longtime running street fair By Lori Larsen
While some of the original tradition may have given way to new tradition, the Jaywalkers’s Jamboree longtime running street fair is in its 61st year which proves that good things really do stand the test of time. With the spotlight on Camrose downtown merchants on June 1 to 3, Jaywalkers’s Jamboree offers a unique shopping experience combined with an open air street fair. Getting its start on June 20 and 21, 1958, according to the late Bill Fowler, founder of The Camrose Booster and member of the planning committee, Jaywalkers’ was an instant hit. In the beginning the Jamboree offered two free rides for each child with additional rides at a cost of five cents and hosted trade booths where a person could purchase almost anything. With so much attention being brought to the downtown area, businesses decided to get on board by offering sales and specials. According to F.W. Woolworth, then manager Don Beebe, busi-
ness was so successful on the Friday afternoon the Canadian Bank of Commerce ran out of $1 bills. The second Jaywalkers’ Jamboree, held on June 19 and 20, 1959 hit the airwaves when CFCW radio station did a live broadcast from a mobile unit in front of Champion’s Bakery. The third Jaywalkers’ Jamboree was billed in an advertisement in the June 21 edition of The Camrose Booster as being more fun than a far eastern bazaar, as well as a unique experience in shopping pleasure. “There is more participation in every respect than ever before,” said Fowler in his weekly column, Bits, Binds and Baloney. “The event will be more colourful and interesting than ever.” And his prediction was not far off. The 1963 Jamboree included wild animal displays from Al Oeming’s Game Farm, a large auction held by the Lions, square dancing, lucky draws, games of chance, home baking and bargains galore. In 1966, the Jamboree got another injection of excitement with the Jam-
boree jackpot. Jaywalkers could purchase coupons at 25 for $1 then select a prize of their choice allowing them to put as many coupons as they wanted into that particular merchant’s draw barrel. Celebrating Canada’s 100th birthday in 1967, Jaywalkers were encouraged to come dressed in centennial costumes. The Camrose Chamber of Commerce gave away a grand jackpot prize of 200 silver dollars. Mayors Vincent Dantzer, of Edmonton, and Dr. F.M. Smith of Camrose, participated in what was billed as the Alberta Bundle Pitching Championship during the 1968 Jamboree. Mayor Dantzer went on to defeat Mayor Smith in the opening round then competed in the final Saturday afternoon against the eventual winner, Lieutenant Governor J. Grant MacEwan. The excitement continued building momentum at the Jamboree when, in 1971, canoe races were featured on Mirror Lake. The winning entry was rewarded with a trophy donated by Sid’s Sport Shop, plus the right to donate entry fees to a charity of choice.
Food eating challenges were no stranger to the Jamboree either. In 1973, CFCW sponsored a world championship kobasa-eating contest including free rides in the Kobasa Chuckwagon for children under the age of 12. The Jamboree has grown in size and excitement to include creative themes, a midway of rides
and games, entertainment, incredible downtown shopping and vendors and attracts people from near and far. Bring the family down and be a part of Camrose’s history at this year’s 61st annual Jaywalkers’ Jamboree and don’t forget to bring your party beads for this year’s Mardi Gras theme.

Tourism Camrose reported on the 2017 year during the annual General Meeting held at the Ramada Camrose Hotel. Financial report
Presenting the 2017 financial report, Tourism Camrose treasurer Kelaine Brand began by explaining that in 2017, Camrose Tourism experienced a $1,800.84 deficit. “This was due to our lower than expected partnership contribution,” said Brand. “We had originally budgeted for about $9,500 and ended up bringing in just over $5,000 and it (the deficit) was also due to an increase in payroll expenses. When we hired Jennifer (Filip) (as acting executive director), we had a twomonth overlap with Jenn and Hazel (Cail) (since retired executive director). Payroll expenses were a bit higher than we have budgeted for, resulting in the $1,800 deficit.” According to the balance sheet, as of Dec. 31, 2017, Tourism Camrose had $43,845.49 in chequing and savings. “That is specifically for operating funds savings and is the cushion that covered the $1,800 deficit in 2017. Our budgets are always based on a rough break-even annual projection. If we ever do have a slight overage, any money left falls into that cushion pot and, in cases like 2017 where we run in a deficit, that cushion allows us to continue operating.” The budget for 2018, based on 2017 year end
financials, projects a total revenue of $65,560 with total projected expenses at $65,850, creating a projected deficit of $290. The 2018 Project Budget, based on 2017 year-end financials, projects a total revenue of $25,600 with total expenses of $24,605 resulting in a projected surplus of $995. Transitioning tourism
City of Camrose community development director and member of Tourism Camrose board of directors, Victor Goodman, presented strategic objectives and a work plan that has been put in place for transitioning Tourism Camrose away from a destination marketed organization into a full destination management organization for tourism in the region. “The objective is to ensure that Tourism Camrose stays competitive with other Alberta jurisdictions,” said Goodman. Goodman spoke in detail about the Plan’s four goals of increasing Camrose and region’s market share of travellers, improving Camrose and region’s Net Promoter Score (NPS), increasing tourism stakeholder’s rating of Camrose region’s overall performance and increasing the tourism economic benefits to the region. “The Net Promoter Score predicts tourism industry growth,” said Goodman, noting the Net Promoter Scores are based on responses to the question, “How likely are you to recommend Camrose and region as a travel desti-
nation to a friend, family member or colleague?” Goodman explained four strategic areas are identified which include inspiring visitation through focused marketing, activate strategic marketing partnerships, enhance destination appeal and provide visionary leadership. “The first thing to understand is the tourism sector is hyper competitive and requires us to develop reasons for people to want to come here. We have to look at tourism through a slightly different lens,” said Goodman. “We do have a number of things that bring people into our community for different reasons. And while they are here, they can do other things, which makes them a tourist.” As an example, Goodman referred to Dance Tourism, noting that last year alone, Dance Tourism brought over 25,000 dancers into Camrose. “There are a lot of these things that people aren’t necessarily recognizing as tourism that we can really work with to enhance.” Goodman indicated that the board, along with Filip, have been working on things such as an active list of things to do in Camrose, key tourism demand generators and an inventory of tourism assets in Camrose and area. “In the longer term, we also need to take a look at determining the cost of designing an interactive tool for the tourism website that will allow potential visitors to design visits for themselves aligning with their EQ (Explorer Quotient) type,” said Goodman. “Where this comes into play is the ability to draw
on our regional neighbourhood. “We are also in the process of redesigning the Tourism Guide to target our best customers and appeal to our best assets.” The last area Goodman covered involved accessibility and circulation–helping ensure visitors experience easy accessibility to the tourism assets and information. “We want to access the quality and clarity of tourism signage and regional asset mapping coordinates, particularly when it comes to things out in the county.” Flat fee
Tourism Camrose members attending the AGM on Feb. 15 voted to implement a $25 flat membership fee. “What we are hoping to move towards is a more active pay to play model, buying into those certain marketing activities such as online digital, social media, being featured on our website and more,” said Tourism Camrose executive director Filip, “We would be more inclusive of the entire region versus focusing on only the membership, because there is so much to do and see in the Camrose region. This will be more suited to allowing us to collaboratively work with more partners while we support our existing partners and enable our visitors to have a more comprehensive picture of what is offered in our full region.” Board members

City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer spoke about the direction Tourism Camrose is headed. “Hopefully, the progress and direction that Tourism Camrose is focusing on will generate a more productive operation and also create additional income for the organization, as well as create tourism for the city and county.” Councillor Agnes Hoveland, representing City council, also applauded Tourism Camrose on the direction they are heading with the new strategic plan and suggested Tourism Camrose create a link to the City Calendar, available on the City of Camrose website. Camrose County Reeve Don Gregorwich commented on the information provided. “I found this to be an absolutely fascinating meeting and really informative. I appreciate, very much, that the focus we are looking at is Camrose and region. I see the direction that is out there as being extremely valuable to our communities and it looks like there is an opportunity for further cooperation with the organizations. One of the things we are always concerned about, is the sustainability of our rural communities and this looks like an opportunity to try to move towards increasing that by working together.”

Dedication honours Bethany’s roots By Murray Green
The Bethany Group held a dedication ceremony close to the original Old People’s Home site in Bawlf as a tribute to its inception and roots to the organization today. Bethany CEO Mike Leathwood led the celebration on April 27. “It’s the humble beginnings that has taken us to what we are today. It’s the people that made the difference.” In 1922, the Lutheran Church in Bawlf recognized a need for care of elderly immigrants in the area. The seniors had no families and weren’t able to take care of themselves or their own homes or farms. “A dedication tells the story of the past. The history shapes our future,” said Rev. David Eriksson, during the dedication. “Those of us who work for Bethany are continuing the story, as Brenda (Bohmer) will tell us later. Their story has become our story.” In Lutheran tradition, the church and parish decided to take action, purchasing the vacant hospital and turning it into a home for the elderly, which became the Bethany Old People’s Home. “To clarify, the building was first built to be used as a hospital in 1906. By 1909 it was expanded and housed as many as 30 patients. The
hospital closed in 1918, but Bawlf was a busy place in the 1920s. In 1922, the Lutheran Church, already operating for 20 years by that time, saw a growing need to care for the elderly,” said Brenda. The facility housed seniors until 1949 when it closed and the organization moved to Camrose. The Old People’s Home was popular, especially as the economic downturn took its toll. A Board of Charities was created who oversaw the operations and residency of the Home. While rents were low, the Board also relied on the communities/parishes to support residents, especially those from outside of the Bawlf area. They also received land and farms to help support operations. Quite often, the farms weren’t as successful as everyone hoped and were in turn sold in order to continue funding the home. The staff included a matron who took on the duties of caring for the seniors, including cooking, cleaning and a variety of other tasks. She was helped by a few other staff members who worked together. Around 10 years before their move to Camrose, the board started looking for a new home. More and more seniors were approaching
them for care and the home couldn’t house everyone. Finally, in the late ‘40s, the board made a deal with the Town of Camrose to purchase land and begin construction on the Sunset Home with a well attended opening in the late summer of 1949. In August of that year, 17 residents from the home in Bawlf made the move to their new home in Camrose. The Bethany Old People’s Home in Bawlf found yet another purpose as a school, housing three classrooms until the new school opened in 1950. It wasn’t until 2012 that The Bethany Group returned to Bawlf when it assumed management of Sanden Court. While it may not have operated in the community for many years, it never forgot its roots. The building itself may be long gone, but a spot near where the Bethany Old People’s Home was located has been marked with a commemorative monument on the corner of the Bawlf school property (the corner of Alberta Avenue and King Street). A bench at the location is also dedicated to Helga Jacobs (nee Loken) to honour her work at the home and with Bethany. She started work at age 17 in Bawlf.

Promoting awareness with youth By Lori Larsen
Camrose Police Service initiated a new program to help build crime prevention awareness at an early age. The program will work alongside the Alberta Crime Prevention Week, which occurs mid May and will involve all schools in Camrose. Grade 2 students are asked to create a poster depicting a chosen crime prevention theme. The student from each school, with the poster that best illustrates the theme is selected to win a trophy and a tour of the Camrose Police Station. “It’s a project I started and feel will help the youth of Camrose understand the importance of crime prevention at an early age,” said Camrose Police Service Constable Matt Rolfe. “Crime prevention is important at all ages.” The theme for this year’s inaugural contest was Lock it or Lose It. Winners were announced on May 7 and included Micaiah Schmidt from Jack Stuart School, Ruth Wilson from École Sifton School, Isabella Nelson from Chester Ronning School, Lexi Smith from Sparling School, Aiden Willier from École Des Fondateurs and Molly Zarski from St. Patrick Catholic School. “The students were so excited to get rewarded for their hard work and creativity,” said Const. Rolfe who looks forward to continuing the program in the next school year.

Bawlf makes history again By Murray Green
The history of Bawlf was portrayed in the book We Came and We Stayed back in 1980. The community is currently working on volume two that will reflect the history from where the first edition ended until mid-2018. “I was born and raised in the community. The older I get, the more important history is to me,” said Ron Pederson, chair of the history book committee. “The first book came out in 1980 and that was the year I graduated. I felt that after this many years, if we don’t do another one, and there are others older than I am with history we need to gather to put into a book, that we never do one. The idea was floating around in my mind for about a year.” He decided to take action. “Other communities were starting to do it and I thought it isn’t going to happen unless someone starts it. I talked to one of the neighbours (Kathleen Tennant) to ask if they were willing to help and she said yes, so that is how we started,” explained Ron. The book is in the planning stage and people are being asked to submit updates on their families, businesses and community clubs. “We called a meeting and reached out to other community-minded people and asked
them to join us. It wasn’t hard to get a committee together.” In addition to vital statistics like important dates, the organizing group wants to receive stories about school days, sporting events and life in Bawlf over the past 28 years. “We canvassed the whole area telling people we need updated stories. We hope to get a good response. We have about 175 submissions already,” said Ron. “It’s your submissions that will make this project into a success. We have a harder time to convince the newer residents. We want their stories on why they came here and where they work. It’s all interesting information to us. It is important for newer residents to take part in this. It is all history.” Story submissions are due on June 30. Pictures will be accepted until Aug. 31, if the book organizers know they will be forwarded. “When we went around to the houses to canvass the idea of submitting information, people would say, we just live here. A lot of people work somewhere else and just live in Bawlf. We want them to be part of the community and become part of the community,” shared Ron. “We have plenty of service clubs and things people can become
involved in. We encourage them to get to know more people. We hope this books helps that.” Bawlf is planning a homecoming event in 2020. “We hope some of these people become involved in that celebration.” You can send your submissions to Sherry Bratrud at s_bratrud@hotmail.com or Tanya Bergquist at dumbfarmers@xplornet.com. “We are centering around the old Bawlf School and moving to the new school. We are going to have a special section in the book that lists the century farms.” The organizing book crew consists of Ron Pederson, Kathleen Tennant, Dale Uglem, Diane Hartman, Sonja Berg, Gordie Blatz, Glenna Bellingham, Anne Stordahl and Charleen Gunderson. “We will be printing a limited number of the original volume one books if the demand warrants it. I suggest pre-ordering both volumes of the books now, so we know how many we are going to need. We are finishing in October in order for the books to be ready by June 2020,” Ron added. Erskine conquers highest peaks, dreams By Murray Green
Stuart Erskine is not afraid to get his feet off the ground and go to places most people wouldn’t dare go. “Originally from New Zealand, the adventure bug caught him early. He backpacked across continents by the age of 18 and 19,” said Rotary president Lou Henderson in her introduction. “Over 10 years he visited more than 130 countries. In 1995, he adopted Camrose as the place he wanted to live.” He shared his experience with the Rotary Club of Camrose members. “I was in business here for about 10 years when I started to notice I was getting out of shape,” recalled Stuart. “We were at Crimson Lake and the kids wanted to enter a 3km race. I wasn’t going to run so I drank a bottle of Scotch the night before. Somehow I was volunteered into the race, but I wasn’t about to go 20 km, so I entered the kiddie race.” He was challenged by his young daughters to join them in a simple three km run. “I thought, I’ve got to do something, so I took up running.” It proved embarrassing to Stuart. Since then he hasn’t met a challenge, he hasn’t conquered in some way. You see, he crossed the line 24th out of 28 youth runners. It nearly killed him, not physically, but mentally. “I trained for four months and then entered a half marathon in Vegas.” Mountain climbing wasn’t Stuart’s first love. He started to get into shape by entering a half marathon. He pushed himself not only to complete marathons, but competed in the Boston and New York marathons, as well as the Marathon des Sables, which is a 250km trek across the Sahara desert. Stuart proved a point to himself. Not only could he do it, but he moved into the best shape of his life. “I started getting bored with marathons, so I entered death races. They are like running four marathons back to back.” A knee injury slowed his enthusiasm to enter more long distance running. That’s when he turned to mountain climbing. The first time Stuart heard about the Seven Summits challenge he was at a running camp in Idaho. When ultra marathoner Marshall Ulrich passed him a jump drive with a slideshow presentation on it, Erskine slipped it into his laptop bag with the intention of watching it. Two years later he pulled it out of his bag during a flight to Toronto. He was blown away and prom-

ised himself to complete the challenge. “I watched a presentation on the Seven Summits. I said to myself, this is the thing I’m going to do and I enrolled in a climbing course at Mt. Rainer. The most important thing was about how to tie knots.” Stuart has completed the Seven Summit Challenge, crossed the Sahara Desert, entered Death races and mingled with the penguins at the south pole. “The Seven Summits are the highest peaks on seven different continents. You have to ski, snowshoe and climb. You actually have to climb the mountain two or three times. You have to pull up the gear that can take several trips.” Stuart’s seven summit list includes Mt. Kosciusko, Australia 7,310 feet on Oct. 21, 2013; Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania 19,340 feet on Aug. 29, 2014; Mt. Aconcagua, Argentina 22,860 feet on Jan. 23, 2015; Mt. Denali, Alaska, USA 20,320 feet on May 31, 2015; Mt. Elbrus, Russia, 18,513 feet on Aug. 4, 2015; Mt. Vinson, Antarctica 16,067 feet on Jan. 17, 2016 and Mt. Everest, Nepal 29,035 on May 19, 2016. His adventures have pushed the limits of human endurance, mental focus and athleticism. “You are at 16,067 feet and it is -40 degrees and it is windy, so very cold. Only about 2,000 people have ever been to the South Pole. Three times as many people have tried to climb Mt. Everest, than have been to the South Pole,” explained Stuart. After several successful climbs, he climbed the world’s tallest summit, Mt. Everest, on May 19, 2016. “You can only climb the mountain at certain times, so there is a ton of traffic at base camp and on the mountain. There is no oxygen at the top, so you have to carry a couple of oxygen tanks with you get up the mountain. There were 440 people summiting the day I did, a record. It was single
file, so very dangerous. The summit window period is literally two days. Nobody climbed it for two years because of an avalanche one year and an earthquake the following year. People were lined up to climb it. You are on oxygen for 24-hours a day for the last 6,000 feet. The tanks are $5,000 each and you get two at a time. You have to pay with your credit card right there on the mountain.” His ultimate goal is called the Explorer’s Grand Slam, which includes the seven summits and both poles. Stuart already skied to the South Pole. His next target is the north pole. The local adventurer has climbed the highest mountain around the world and has been to the south pole. “I skied to the South Pole and then flew back.” Mt. Everest was good training for another goal. “The toughest challenge in the world is not Mount
Everest, but rather a mountain simply called K2. For every person climbing, you need 100 people helping you,” he added. Despite some reservations from his family, he decided to take the risk. “It is ranked as the toughest mountain to climb, with climbers facing a 30 per cent death rate when they attempt it. Mt. Everest has a four per cent death rate,” indicated Stuart. “You have to rappel about 90 per cent of time.” He had help from donkeys and mules to pack equipment up the mountain, as well as the porters. “Only about 300 people have climbed K-2. Another 100 have died trying, so we passed a memorial along the way.” They started up and had to turn back because of weather. It snowed for 10 days straight (in July) and then it warmed up. “That
was very dangerous for avalanches.” Other successful events include Mt. Rainier Climbing Camp, USA on June 6 to 19, 2014; Carstensz Pyramid, Papua New Guinea 16,023 feet on Nov. 4, 2015; ski to South Pole, Antarctica, 9,301 feet on Jan. 10, 2016 and K2, Pakistan in August 2016. He left some advice for Rotary members. “I want to continue to push myself and strive to do extraordinary things. You can always do more than you think you can. We can always do more. Set a goal and you can do it,” advised Stuart. “When I first started to run four km, I packed enough water and snacks for a month. After a while you learn to adjust and really focus. It starts with setting a goal.” Stuart is set to receive an achievement award from the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame on June 1, in Red Deer.
