- Dig a hole twice the diameter and depth of the root ball - Line the bottom of the hole with bone meal to promote root development - Massage out the root ball so it’s not clumped in the ground - Fill hole with good quality soil - Mulch above where you have backfilled. Mulch will retain moisture and insulate the root ball during the winter. Replace mulch yearly. - Water deeply. Soaker hoses make it easy.

Letters to the Editor How to start a movement

A three-minute TED talk caught my attention. We’re used to seeing advice and research about how to be a leader. This talk was about the impact a follower can make. A video clip showed a shirtless man who started dancing on a beach. A crowd of people sat on the side of a hill. A few began to watch him; most did not. As the speaker said, “At this point, he is just one lone nut.” A few moments later, one person in the crowd got up and joined the dancing man. As the two dancers high-fived and kept dancing, more people started paying attention. The speaker told us to watch carefully. A third person joined the two dancers. What happened next? A tipping point. Within seconds after the third dancer appeared, a few more people began to stand up and join the dancers, and then a few more. Very quickly, more than half the people on the hill were moving to join the dancers. Then others followed, to avoid being left behind. The dancing went from “one lone nut” to an activity that was acceptable and then to a movement. The speaker reinforced the message. A “leader” may be the first person to suggest or do something. But a leader cannot make a difference unless someone follows. Without followers, a potential leader is just “one lone nut.”

Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Little knowledge

A wise teacher once remarked, “a little bit of knowledge can be very dangerous.” I think this aptly applies to those (advocaters) who appear to be obsessed with blaming carbon solely for perceived climate change. I’m not a scientist...and I’m not a climate change

denier (I’ve been observing climate varieties for many decades). But I am a denier of the claims that greenhouse gas emissions are solely responsible for all the violent storms that are occurring, and for the warming of ocean temperatures. I prefer to think that since the earth’s centre is a mass of gases and molten rock, it seems conceivable that some of this heat is escaping into the oceans through fractures caused by earth tremors. An unusual occurrence of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions have been witnessed in recent years. The current horrific Hawaiian eruption is certainly posing danger for the Pacific Ocean and its aquatic species, yet I haven’t heard any news reports (so far) indicating its potential for climate

changing. Meanwhile in Hollywood, celebrities, etc. under the sponsorship of the Suzuki Foundation will continue their denouncing of fossil fuels with only a “little bit of knowledge” while they themselves continue to travel with the benefit of petroleum fuels. Our Prime Minister is probably the biggest individual Canadian polluter. If mere mankind can reverse our climate, what would they hope to achieve? Winds are required to move rain clouds in, then move them out. If we reduce winds and cloudy skies persist, this would not bode well for solar and wind generated power. We’ll need “a bit more knowledge” on how to achieve ideal climate. Bill Mattinson, Camrose

Last week, I attended a 25th anniversary celebration of Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services (AASAS). I knew something of the history, which actually goes back 40 years, when a few brave women began to say, “People (not only women) who have been sexually assaulted or sexually abused need to be supported to help them move past the trauma.” When the women first began to seek funding, nobody paid attention to them. They finally found one man in the provincial bureaucracy who was willing to listen. In order to get the attention of others (all men) who could approve funding, he became their spokesman. The women would give him information and he would feed it to male colleagues who would listen to him but not to women. The tactic was galling but it got the job done. That was then and this is now. At the AASAS 25th anniversary celebration I listened to congratulatory greetings from two provincial cabinet ministers and two Alberta women who are international icons, recognized for their tireless work on behalf of Indigenous and other women. I thought, “Two cabinet ministers and two international icons made time for this event. We’ve made some progress.” The process went from “one lone nut” to a few people willing to set aside their egos in order to make a difference, to what has become a movement. It only took forty years (and yes, there’s still work to do). ***

Past leaders and followers (“we!”) have been extremely effective at creating exactly the reality we have now. Leaders and followers (“we!”) have created realities such as an environment that cannot sustain us much longer, an economy that benefits fewer and fewer people, and political and military actions that drive millions of people to risk their lives in order to escape from their country. Leaders and followers (“we!”) have created acts of kindness and courage that brought harmony out of hatred and solutions to seemingly impossible challenges, from eradicating diseases to travelling in space to political change without violence. Our future could go either way. If what we’ve done has created our current reality and we want to change some of that, we’re almost certainly going to have to experiment with new strategies, with actions that have not been done before. We don’t have to be the first ones, the leaders. I’m encouraged to know that our “follower” actions can make a big difference. But one choice matters more than any other: what kinds of possibilities do we choose to follow? Fearful or expansive? Hate-filled or compassionate? What kind of movement, what kind of reality, do we want to create? Our “follower-ship” matters. ***

SILVER TWINS

Submitted After hearing about the Zone 4 Alberta 55 plus Camrose Spring Games, these twin sisters decided to enter. One lives in Sylvan Lake and the other in Camrose, but that didn’t deter them. Winning silver medals in crib doubles is Ruth Repchinski, left, from Camrose and Esther Hnatiw from Sylvan Lake. This is their first time entering Alberta 55 Plus Games and they were so thrilled to have won a medal. Great minds think alike.

Camrose welcomes the purple martins back By Lori Larsen

Every year around this time, Camrose becomes home again to the iridescently feathered beauties, the purple martins. In celebration of the return of the martins from an astonishing trip from as far south as the Amazon Basin, Camrose is holding the ninth annual Purple Martin Festival on June 16 from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Stoney Creek Centre (5320-39 Avenue). The day will begin with registration from 9:30 until 9:45 a.m. From 10

until 10:45 a.m. a presentation, Woodpecker Hybrids and Dancing Grouse by guest speaker Corey Scobie, assistant curator of ornithology at the Royal Alberta Museum, will offer information on bird research and new displays at the museum. From 11 a.m. until noon, there will be purple martin workshops for both the beginner and experienced purple martin enthusiasts and landlords. Attendees will break for lunch between noon and 12:45 p.m. This is a

great opportunity to have a picnic lunch in the beautiful surroundings of Stoney Creek area. Then participants are invited to board a bus for a tour of some purple martin sites in the City. For those who do not wish to take the bus tour, there will be wildlife walking tours and an opportunity to inspect a purple martin house. At 2 p.m., join guest speaker professional avian photographer Don Delaney as he shares his fascination with all things feathered with an emphasis on

purple martins and other local swallow species. The family-friendly festival offers a host of fun activities to entertain the children as well. Battle River Watershed Alliance will take any interested youngsters pond-dipping to learn about the creatures in our creek. Camrose Public Library will be providing games, crafts and reading materials and during the afternoon, the Beaverhill Bird Observatory will be bringing a feathered friend

to the festival. This is a great opportunity to see an owl up close and personal while learning about owl habits and way of life in North America. Adults are welcome to join in. For more information, contact City of Camrose Greenspace and Wildlife Stewardship coordinator Carolyn Cook at ccook2@ ualberta.ca or by telephone at 780-672-0544 or City of Camrose community services parks director Ken Krueger at kkrueger@camrose.ca or by telephone at 780-672-9195.

Celebrating cultural diversity By Lori Larsen

Camrose and area residents are invited to join in the celebration of National Indigenous Peoples’ Day and the cultural diversity of Canada on June 21. Sponsored by the Camrose Arts Society, University of Alberta Augustana Campus, Battle River School Division, Tourism Camrose, Camrose and District Centennial Museum, Camrose Regional Exhibition, Camrose and District Family Thrift Shop, Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak and the City of Camrose, along with a grant from Canadian Heritage, the day will be celebrated in a presentation of indigenous culture on June 21 at the Augustana Campus Quad. University of Alberta Augustana Campus Indigenous student services coordinator Megan Caldwell spoke about the importance of recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day. “It is a day to celebrate indigenous people across Canada. It is important in our community because we are all living on Treaty Six territory and we have indigenous people throughout our community. Recognizing their presence and their history and their relationship to this space is important for everybody.” There will be four presentations this year beginning with the grand entry at 9:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. “The event has already booked 2,200 school students,” said Camrose arts director Jane CherryLemire. “This year, it will take place in the Augustana Quad and will feature live music.” Organizers indicated that the two morning sessions (9:30 and 10:45 a.m.) are already heavily booked with students, so advise the public to consider attending the two afternoon sessions. The day will include presentations by the Maskwacis drummers and dancers. Caldwell indicated, “There will be a group of

about 20 drummers and dancers performing a variety of songs and dances. There will also be an emcee narrating as they go along educating attendees about the different dances and songs and what they signify.” Attendees will also be given an opportunity to experience fellowship and the cultural dance firsthand during the event’s Round Dance. The Indigenous Day celebration has been a long-running event and has grown in both size

mindsets, I think this type of event is a positive way to build awareness.” Packages containing information are being prepared and will be distributed to schools to encourage continual learning about indigenous peoples, culture and history. “It (Indigenous Peoples Day) is an opportunity to facilitate the embracing of other cultures,” noted Cherry-Lemire. “I know the schools really enjoy this because we receive phone calls in January inquiring as to whether we will

be doing the event again. Obviously the schools find this a valuable event.” In the event of inclement weather, the presentations will be moved indoors into the Augustana gymnasium. For more information on the event, email camrosearts.indigenousday @ gmail.com.

Downtown Camrose welcomed new executive director Bettyann Skagen in mid-March of this year. Skagen, along with her husband and two children, have been local to the Camrose area for the past 27 years. She has extensive experience volunteering in the community and has made a career working in the non-profit sector where she focused on member relations and community building. Her background is in information technology, communications, security and management. “I thought being involved in Downtown Camrose would be an exciting opportunity,” said Skagen, about taking on the position. “A lot of the job description is in my background and really appealed to me.” Part of Skagen’s role as Downtown Camrose executive director will include getting out and meeting with the downtown area businesses. “There are almost 300 retail and service businesses downtown,” she remarked. “For this small area, that is amazing.” Skagen indicated she is excited to get out and meet the people of the downtown businesses and speak with them about how they feel about the downtown area and inquire as to what they feel could be done to help improve the area.

“We (Skagen and the Downtown Camrose board of directors) created a campaign called ‘Bettyann is in the Zone,’” she smiled. “I am going to be starting at one of the businesses and asking some key questions to learn about the business, hear what they have to say and hear ideas about Downtown Camrose and then update our database of information.” She will also be taking photographs at each business to be posted later on the Downtown Camrose social media channels. “Then I will give that business the opportunity to pick the next business I visit. We are going to make it fun and at the same time create connectivity between all the downtown area businesses. “The downtown has obviously been doing something right. The businesses down here have created this community and it is not just on 50th Street, it is the whole zone.” Skagen said that so many people she has spoken with over the years from out of town comment on how much they love Camrose’s downtown area and the sense of community they get from the businesses. “We are losing community in so many ways, it’s so nice that we can have this grow and thrive.” Continued on page 24

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Young fiddle players practice for the Prairie West Fiddle Championships. The event will be held at the Bailey Theatre on June 8 and 9. An open dance will be held on Friday evening prior to the championships on Saturday. By Murray Green

Fiddle players from across western Canada will be entered in the second annual Prairie West Fiddle Contest, June 8 and 9. Competitors will be competing for prizes and a chance to participate in a grand concert on Saturday at 7 p.m. Three young fiddlers came up with the idea for the contest that was conceived around the dinner table. They represent a larger group of young fiddlers who are enthusiastic about creating more opportunities for fiddlers to come together to learn and share and carry on the spirit of old time fiddling in Alberta. Ethan Harty of Strome and Red Deer fiddle players Samuel Corry and Jackson Corry entered the 25-Hour Non-Stop Fiddling Marathon in Lacombe. “Quite a few years ago, fiddle concerts were a pretty big deal in this area and across

Canada,” said Ethan, a Grand North American Old Time Fiddle Championship winner. “The Prairie West Fiddle Contest is a way of bringing that back.” Harty is a 16-year-old throwback to the old-style of fiddle playing. He enjoys entering contests to sharpen his skills. Randy Jones is going to be the emcee this year. Calvin Vollrath, Jarred Albright and Allison Granger will be the judges. Guest musicians will be Marlee Heesing and Lucas Welsh. A Welcome Showcase and Dance will start the weekend on Friday, June 8 at 7 p.m. with admission by donation at the Bailey Theatre. The preliminary competition begins Saturday, June 9 at 10 a.m. They start with a preliminary round in age groups, junior 12 and under, youth of 17 and under, adults 18 to 54 and then seniors 55 and

older. “A set for juniors is three tunes. They play a waltz, a jig and a reel, which is the fastest,” Ethan explained. “In the youth and up categories, a fourth song is added, which is a tune of choice. You could add a polka or show tune. The tune of choice really shows your style of play and sets you apart from others. It is a chance to show off your ability. There is an element of difficulty, but most important is how well you play them,” explained Ethan. The top performers will be asked back for the final championship and show at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.bailey theatre.com/tickets, at the Bailey Box Office. Fiddle players register by visiting www.prairieestfiddle.ca.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Ryan White, left, and Kaitlyn Hennessey are perfecting crafts to be made by Summer Arts students. By Murray Green

The Camrose Arts Society’s Creative Arts Program is returning for another fun-filled program from July 3 to Aug. 24 at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre. The program will be offered during the week (except Aug. 6) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for children from six to 12 years of age. Ryan White, program coordinator and Vanguard College student in Edmonton, collected information on the previous two year’s success and has changed a few events to encourage more fun and adventure. “We looked at what worked really well the last two years, the best crafts and best activities, and then we tried to incorporate as much of those as we can,” Ryan said. “We also saw what didn’t work out and tried to change those. We changed the crafts, so if someone comes who was here last year, there won’t be the same activities.” He is glad to be back at the summer arts program. “I’m excited to see the children again and I really enjoy working with them. It’s super exciting because every day will feature a different theme and crafts. I know that I’m super excited, so I’m hoping they are too.” He indicated that it is the blend of new students and some familiar faces who make it a fun atmosphere.

Parents can register their children for the entire program, a month, weeks or single days to work around holiday schedules. “We encourage people to register early because we can only fit in so many children in a day,” added Ryan. Children learn about science and culture, while having fun. Television game show themes and video games have Ryan excited about the summer. “We’re trying to incorporate some of those games you’d see on the show and have some fun,” he said. Assistant program director Kaitlyn Hennessey is an Augustana student from Camrose who is a chemistry major. “I was raised in arts and actually danced here for 14 years. I went to the arts program and I really enjoyed it. I also have a lot of experience working with children.” She is looking forward to adding more science along with crafts at the Arts Centre. “I want to include more science experiments because I didn’t get that opportunity when I was younger,” said Kaitlyn. The program is based out of the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre, but often uses the facilities close by to add to the experience. “I’m thankful to have someone to work with who

is a science major because it allows us to have more fun experiments. We have a full science fair day planned. We go to Mirror Lake so it is about adventures and not just crafts. We go to the museum and post office and places like that. We also have people from the community to help present topics,” Ryan said. “We have someone

coming in to teach children how to paint. That’s something I’m looking forward to.” Advance registration is important to plan for the days activities. “Everything we do, we plan for 35 children. Some days, we may not have that many, but we have to be ready.” As soon as the registration goes over 20 chil-

Legion to w w w.s o l e c i t yshoes .c o m honour This year, for Father’s Day, D-Day isn’t it time to give Dad something with that he really, really wants? service By Murray Green

The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will be remembering D-Day, June 6, with a service at the branch. The service begins prior to 11 a.m. Coffee and snacks will be available before the outside service. On Tuesday, June 6, 1944, 74 years ago, the Normandy, France landings of the Allied invasion of Operation Overlord during the Second World War took place and was a turning point in the war. Code-named Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The operation began the liberation of G er ma n- occupied northwestern Europe from Nazi control and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front. Planning for the operation began in 1943. In the months leading up to the invasion, the Allies conducted a substantial m il ita r y deception, code-named Operation Bodyguard, to mislead the Germans as to the date and location of the main Allied landings. The weather on D-Day was far from ideal on June 5 and the operation had to be delayed 24 hours; a further

postponement would have meant a delay of at least two weeks as the invasion planners had requirements for the phase of the moon, the tides and the time of day that meant only a few days each month were deemed suitable. T he a mph ibious landings were preceded by extensive aerial and naval bombardment and an airborne assault–the landing of 24,000 American, British and Canadian airborne troops shortly after midnight. Allied infantry and armoured divisions began landing

on the coast of France at 6:30 a.m. The target 50-mile (80-km) stretch of the Normandy coast was divided into five sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. Strong winds blew the landing craft east of their intended positions, particularly at Utah and Omaha. The men landed under heavy fire from gun emplacements overlooking the beaches, and the shore was mined and covered with obstacles such as wooden stakes, metal tripods, and barbed wire, making the work of the

beach-clearing teams difficult and dangerous. The Allies failed to achieve any of their goals on the first day. Casualties were heaviest at Omaha, with its high cliffs. At Gold, Juno and Sword, several fortif ied towns were cleared in houseto-house fighting, and two major gun emplacements at Gold were disabled, using specialised tanks. Canadians made the biggest impact on D-Day with two of the beaches (Juno and Gold) linked on the first day. All five beachheads

were not connected until June 12, however, the operation gained a foothold, which the Allies g radually expa nded over the coming months. German casualties on D-Day have been estimated at 4,000 to 9,000 men. Allied casualties were at least 10,000, with 4,414 confirmed dead. Open house

On June 23, the Legion will celebrate its 90th anniversary as a Royal Canadian Legion Branch in Camrose. An open house from 2 to 4 p.m. will be held that day.

Stop clowning around, join a circus camp By Murray Green

If you enjoy the circus and want to learn how to do some amazing feats, then attending a circus camp might be a great idea. The Bailey Circus Camp includes five full days of fun, excitement and learning from Aug. 7 to 11. Bailey Circus Camp is for youth ages eight to 16. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with a showcase performance for parents, friends and the entire community at 3 p.m. on the last day. Imagine yourself at the circus and show off all of the skills and magic you learned during the week. Your child will experience suitable skills from the following opportunities: clowning, puppets, rola bola, juggling,

aerial skills, unicycle, act creation, hoops, tumbling and giant puppets. The circus camp lead instructors are graduates of L’Ecole Nationale de Cirque in Quebec. They come from across North America and are practicing performers, buskers and educators. Circus builds strength, teamwork, coordination and confidence. It encourages your child to be creative, have fun and develop physical abilities and endurance. Be adventurous and run away to the Bailey Circus Camp for a creative and fun experience this summer. Registration deadline is on June 10. Call 780672-5510 or register at the Bailey Theatre Box Office today.

Edwards performs just for laughs By Murray Green

Alls I’m saying is Derek Edwards is funny. His comedy routine, Alls I’m Saying is legendary. Like a sniper with the hiccups, Derek takes aim at life’s galling moments, exhales slowly and jerks back the trigger. A riotous evening of homegrown comedy—like taking a ride in an open golf cart with a good friend and a six pack. Derek will be appearing at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday, June 13 starting at 7:30 p.m. “If you count the totally amateur guest spot trying out new material petrified on stage, I’ve been doing this for 30 years,” informed Derek. “To keep having success I try to end with the funny stuff. I start out by telling things about the community and what happened that day, so folks know where I am coming from.” Not only will Derek share his classic routines, but he also likes to add some regional comedy into the mix to make people feel right at home. “I’ve had good responses from people on this tour so far. It’s a momentum thing, I just want to keep the ball rolling,” he laughed. “By the time I get to Camrose, I will be two-thirds finished, so I should have it figured out by then.” From Vegas to St. John’s, this Just For Laughs veteran is universally considered to be among the comic elite. Certainly his peers think

so, as evidenced by the fact that he’s a four-time nominee and winner of Best Standup Comic–Canadian Comedy Awards, as well as a multiple Gemini nominee for Best Performance in a Comedy. “Television is different. You have to be squeaky clean and you can’t overlap lines. The audience is lit up brightly, like surgically, and people are a little reluctant to show as much emotion. I’m shielding my eyes from the glare. You have those helicopter-like drone cameras flying around and people don’t want to stand up too quickly. Where as a live show is spontaneous and people feel comfortable laughing when they feel it is funny. It is so much more enjoyable for me,” explained Derek. “I want a natural reaction, rather than a pushed applause. A dirty giggle would be much better.” Derek prefers to tour across the county. “I love hitting the smaller cities, it’s so delightful. It’s the venue that often dictates the crowd. It is better to be intimate with the crowd in a nice theatre. I’ve been to places in northern Alberta where my rental car has gotten a few dents from people rolling over during a fight. A long blonde hair was cemented in a spot of blood on my hood and it was from two women fighting. So, when I say I’m happy to be in Camrose, I will really mean it,” he laughed. “I wasn’t laughing at the time. Try explaining that (bar fight) one to the car rental company. I had to pound it

out a little to save from being hit with a $10,000 bill from the car company. Some towns you just hope you never see again, but it has been a good 30 years.” He is looking forward to his tour out west. “It’s that time in our lives that the wife is just happy to get me out of the house.” Alls I’m Saying, Dereks’ new 90-minute stand-up comedy show is a richly textured and smoothly delivered event. “I’m from northern Ontario, so the phrase Alls I’m Saying is quite common around here and the rest of Canada. It’s a reflection of Canada and I bring a piece of parts of Canada to the rest of the country.” Derek lists Second City, Monty Python and George Carlin as groups and people he followed before trying comedy. “I saw George live my first year at college and away from home. People stumbled out of the theatre because their stomachs were so sore. Norm MacDonald was another one. He is so natural and his timing is right on. He had a big impression on me,” added Derek. “Brent Butt from Corner Gas is another one. We toured together and I found myself sounding just like him after a while. It was an overcoat that I didn’t know I still had on me. I had to stop myself because it was creeping into my delivery.” Derek wants everyone to escape life and go to the show to have fun.

Good to deliver Canadian music By Murray Green

JUNE 11 2018 11:30 AM - 1 PM BURGESS BUILDING 4604-57 STREET, CAMROSE

CAMROSE ASSOCIATION FOR COMMUNITY LIVING LUNCHEON

Matthew Good is one of Canada’s preeminent voices in music today. His voice will be heard in Camrose at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale on at 9 a.m. June 4 for subscribers and June 8 to the public. “Matthew Good has been producing great Canadian rock music in Canada for more than 20 years,” said Lougheed Centre manager Nick Beach. “He has nearly one million records in Canada alone. During the late ‘90s and early 2000s, I can’t think of a bigger rock band in Canada.” In the 20 years since the release of his debut album, he has been prolific in his output. Matthew’s studio albums have combined for nearly one million albums sold in Canada alone. He released his ninth solo album, Something Like A Storm last fall and has been nominated for over 20 Juno awards (although Good has refused to accept any of his awards). “He is one of those artists that you know the song on the radio, but if you are not a big Matthew Good fan, you may not get the connection that it is his song,” explained Nick. “What’s exciting for me is that it is an acoustic show because his lyrics give you goosebumps when you hear them without the full rock sound.” Matthew Frederick Robert Good (born June 29, 1971) is a Canadian rock musician. He was the lead singer and songwriter for the Matthew Good Band, one of the most successful alternative rock bands in Canada during the 1990s, before dissolving the band in 2002. Since the Matthew Good Band’s disbanding, Good has pursued a solo career. “His songwriting and voice really comes out when you listen to his music in an acoustic setting,” added Nick.

“I started trying to get him to Camrose three years ago. Word is getting out to these artists that want to come to Camrose.” In 1995, Good formed a three-piece rock band composed of himself, drummer Ian Browne and bassist Geoff Lloyd. Dave Genn originally only recorded with the band as a paid session musician. The four recorded the band’s debut full-length album, Last of the Ghetto Astronauts. In May 1997, the band

released the EP, Raygun. Later that year, the band released their second fulllength album, Underdogs. The album was produced by Warne Livesey, who would go on to produce every fulllength MGB album and most of Good’s subsequent solo albums. The album spawned the singles “Everything Is Automatic,” “Indestructible,” “Apparitions” and “Rico,” all which were hits in Canada. The album was certified platinum in Canada on Jan. 21, 1999. Beautiful Midnight is the third album released by the Matthew Good Band. It is the band’s most commercially successful album. The album became successful via singles including “Hello Time Bomb,” “Load Me Up” and “Strange Days.”

The album earned them two Juno awards in 2000, for Best Group and Best Rock Album. Beautiful Midnight became the band’s best-selling album, being certified double platinum in Canada and selling over 300,000 copies by 2016. In 2000, the band began working on their next album, The Audio of Being. The album’s creation came during a difficult period for Good. While he struggled to deal with the band’s success, he was diagnosed with sarcoidosis, prompting him to temporarily quit smoking. Following throat surgery to remove a nodule from a vocal cord, Good stayed in a hotel for three weeks in Whistler to work on songs for the new album. In November 2001, it was revealed that Genn had left the band again and drummer Ian Browne had also left the band. Universal Music Canada later confirmed that the band had broken up. Good released his solo debut Avalanche in 2003. The album featured major stylistic differences from those recorded with the previous band. The album featured the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on several tracks, including the first two singles, “Weapon” and “In a World Called Catastrophe.” Good’s second solo album, White Light Rock & Roll Review, was released on June 15, 2004. Singles included “Alert Status Red” and “It’s Been a While Since I Was Your Man.” Matthew is also known for his support of various causes, most notably his dedication to raising awareness regarding mental health issues and human rights. LPAC notes

The Lougheed Centre sold a shows worth of Jann Arden tickets in less than 16 minutes. More than 1,000 tickets were sold on the first day.

tlc for your rea

One of the messages the Alberta Federation of REAs (AFREA) puts on materials distributed to our member Rural Electrification Associations (REAs) is that: “We are here to support you in sustaining the REA way of life in rural Alberta.” It’s a message that attempts to get to the heart of why we do what we do. But we print it and read it so many times, it’s easy to stop noticing it.

Social Capital: Does your REA have any? Nothing other than an REA Co-op could have brought power to rural Alberta because there was no social or community will within government or the private sector to overcome the cost hurdle. That social will, or social capital, still exists today in many rural communities. It shows up in the form of a rural Albertan helping a neighbour plant a crop when sickness gets in the way. It evidences itself in communities that rally around families who have lost loved ones, in order to ensure things get done on the farm that need to be done. Social capital is present when humans come together to cooperate and support one another in meeting a need.

It’s that simple… and that complicated.

REAs started with lots of social capital but, over time, some have lost touch with how to maintain and build it. Others have failed to pass the principles of social capital on to the next generation. This isn’t unique to REAs. Studies in the cooperative sector show that co-ops, like any other organization, have a life-cycle. It is normal for co-ops to go through periods of waning social capital.

The big questions is: What are you going to do about it? Maybe it is time to get a read on your REA’s social capital and then take action. You may need to perform emergency resuscitation, or you may just need to apply some TLC. Whatever the level of response, one thing is certain – your REA co-op will not survive and thrive without a strong dose of social capital at work and in action. It is common to experience lots of cooperation and participation by your members when a co-op is new. Then it is common, in any member-based organization, to see that level drop and complacency set in. The health of an REA, like any co-op, is tied to the member community and the level of trust and participation in the organization. Coming together to fill a community need fuels social capital. But then, what do you do? After sixty or seventy years of mundane existence, social capital can disappear.

What is REA ocial Capital?

Chartered Accountants Directory

The Secret of Social Capital What is the secret to building and maintaining social capital for the long haul?

The secret is to develop and constantly earn, from our members, the same trust and social will to get involved that the REA had when it first started. It is the trust between people to take risks together as a community for the good of the community. It is the confidence in the membership that the elected Boards are acting in good faith for the good of the whole. It is trust in the co-op itself as a mechanism that benefits the community. When people trust how the co-op is being run and show up to help, the future becomes far more inviting and exciting. People reciprocate. They share. This is the whole bundle of goods that is ‘social capital.’ It’s nothing less than all of us cooperating with one another to meet the needs of our community. Has your REA maintained and grown its social capital, or is it time for some TLC?

Social Capital is not measurable in the same way financial capital is… Rather, it is the benefits a group or organization provides to members, as a whole, and the interaction to provide them. Social capital is for the good of all and, therefore, available equally amongst the group.

• It is more than just dollars • It is working together for the betterment of

the community • It is trust in how your co-op is run • It is Sharing - Reciprocation - Future Benefits • It is membership involvement in the co-op • It is board engagement with members

The beaver is a fascinating animal, and Camrose Greenspace and Wildlife Stewardship (CGWS) summer program would like to invite you to learn more about them on Thursday, June 7 at 7 p.m. during the second event held at the Stoney Creek Centre, 5320-39 Avenue. “Dr. Glynnis Hood will be making a presentation on the natural history of beavers, the star of Canada’s five-cent coin,” said CGWS coordinator Carolyn Cook. “This is going to be a great natural history talk

and kids are encouraged to attend.” Hood will be speaking about the beaver and its role in the environment, and importance to our ecosystem. Anyone attending the CGWS events will have an opportunity to enter their

name into a draw for a variety of prizes donated by local businesses, by filling out an evaluation on the event. For more information on the Stewardship programs contact Carolyn Cook at ccook2@ ualberta.ca or by telephone at 780-672-0544.

The automotive section of

Bonter attracted to truck big fender style By Murray Green

John Bonter of Camrose admits he is a fender guy. He owns a 1945 International truck K-3. “I like the big fenders on it. I wasn’t a really big International fan, but I liked the really big fat fenders and the style. It wasn’t as popular as Chevrolet, GMC or Ford, so that attracted me to it a little bit.” The International Harvester Company (abbreviated first IHC and later IH) was a United States manufacturer of agricultural machinery, construction equipment, trucks, and household and commercial products. The roots of International Harvester run to the 1830s, when Cyrus Hall McCormick, an inventor from Virginia, finalized his version of a horse-drawn reaper, which he field-demonstrated throughout 1831, and for which he received a patent in 1834. Together with his brother Leander J. McCormick (1819–1900), McCormick moved to Chicago in 1847 and started the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company. In 1902, J.P. Morgan merged the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and Deering Harvester Company, along with three smaller agricultural equipment firms, to form International Harvester. The International Harvester K and KB Series are trucks that were produced by International Harvester, the first being the K introduced in mid1940. In total, there were 42 models, 142 different wheelbase lengths and load ratings ranging from halfton to 90,000 lbs. “I found the truck in Edmonton and a guy had it in his garage. I was searching the internet and came across it. I went to look at it, liked it, so I bought it.” Internationals are best known for their durability, prewar design in a postwar era and low price. “That would be five years ago now. It was in the garage for three years, slowly getting fixed up. I put it on a 1991 S-10 frame and put a 305 engine out

WHITE LIGHTNING

Murray Green, Camrose Booster John Bonter wanted his classic truck to have big bold fenders to reflect the 1940s style of vehicles from that time period. This rebuild was special for him because he did most of the work himself.

of another pick-up into it with a 700R4 transmission. I put a little bit of everything into it and it turned out the way I wanted it to look,” explained John. The follow-up to the K, the KB, was introduced in 1947, with the characteristic difference being a widened lower grill appearing like wings. Between 1947 and 1949, 122,000 KB-1 and KB-2 trucks were sold. “I bought the motor as is. Something was done to it because it has lots of power, more than a 305 should have,” shared John. The K models progress from one to 14 based upon the load capacity (K1 equals half ton, K-2 equals a three-quarter ton and K-3 was a one ton). However, there are no K-9 or K-13 model trucks. “I wanted a daily driver and I like driving it more than my new truck.” The K-3 has a heavier frame, larger brakes and

rear axles supported by two roller bearings on a free floating rear end. “Building this truck was a learning process because I have never done most of the work before. I’ve had a couple of cars before, but I took them in to shops to get the work done on them,” added John. The style of the truck involved headlamps that were integrated into the fenders. The hood opens alligator style. “This time I wanted to build one from the frame up. It is more satisfying to build it yourself. If I build another one, I would have to sell this one first.” The chrome wings were added on the sides of the grill, a wrap-around chrome piece on the front hood, a hood ornament and chrome lettering indicating the model designation below the International nameplate on each side of the hood. “I enjoy going to a lot

of car shows, about six last year. I pick them at random and go wherever. Most of the joy is driving there. I also like to talk to people

and get some ideas at the shows,” said John. Look for John driving his bright white 1945 International around Camrose on a sunny day.

Downtown Camrose Continued from page 8

One of Skagen’s main objectives is to ensure the Downtown Camrose organization gets out and is seen and involved. She also recognizes the importance of working closely and developing strong ties to the City of Camrose. “The board and myself are very excited about strengthening the relationship with the City and I think that is really important in Downtown Camrose as a whole.” Skagen has reviewed the City of Camrose Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan and, although she hasn’t been able to delve into the plan in great detail, she has spoken with City administration about it and has expressed a desire on behalf of Downtown Camrose, to be an active member of DARP, working with the City. “It is very important that we do work together. Downtown Camrose, the organization, has been around since 1990 and has a good understanding of what the downtown area needs. Now we have a higher level document done by the City so we can work together to achieve our goals.” Skagen also explained that the results of the City’s recent Downtown Parking Study indicated there is not a parking issue in the downtown area. “We are so lucky there is angle parking and people do not have to pay for parking–that is huge.” Looking ahead

Taking on any new position requires time to settle in, getting to know exactly what and who you are working with, and Skagen is making strides in doing just that while looking ahead and setting goals. “It’s important for Downtown Camrose, the organization, to be present when new businesses start up. Be a part of their grand opening. And we also want to start featuring existing and new businesses into our social media channels.” Skagen said the Downtown Camrose board and herself are also investigating other opportunities for drawing traffic to the downtown area such as bringing the lights back on the trees, encouraging outdoor patios at restaurants and creating a unique experience in the downtown area similar to what one might find in other municipalities.

Lock it or Lose it!

“I have had several conversations with City administration regarding the pocket park, dedicated as the Lions Centennial Park, about what we can do in the interim of the process to make it more conducive as a place for people to sit and relax versus just a vacant little spot.” Skagen was pleased to discover the City was thinking the same thing. The pocket park has since been outfitted with picnic tables and a stage, built by the Camrose Swans and Roses Lions Club, as a cost effective way to make it more appealing and useful during Jaywalkers’ Jamboree and the Camrose Downtown Market on Thursdays. “We are excited to be working again with the City and the Lions to get that pocket park usable.” Skagen said the Board is also hoping to build more awareness surrounding the Downtown Dollars program. “It is a very valuable item for downtown. You can purchase Downtown Dollars in increments of $10, $25, $50 and $100 all year round and they can be redeemed at any of the participating downtown business.” She added that the dollars make great gift ideas. In conclusion, Skagen said her main focus, along with the board, will be to get Downtown Camrose (the organization) out there. “It is important that people know we exist and what great things downtown has to offer in such a small area. You don’t have to be driving or paying for parking and can do anything from getting a key cut to paying your City utility bill to looking for that perfect one-of-a-kind outfit. All of that and more with friendly and personal service.” Referring to Downtown as the heart of the City, Skagen said it is a community all its own. “I think working together with the City, our stakeholders, Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Camrose and of course our membership, we can continue to see the downtown grow and thrive. “I am excited about this position, and working with this board of 13 members. They have a united vision of strengthening and moving Downtown Camrose forward. It is very exciting to see and be part of that energy.”

Helen Marie Myers September 2, 1921 ~ April 25, 2018 Helen was born on September 2, 1921 in Regina, SK to the late Alfred and Marie Ohrt, the second of five children. Predeceased are her parents; three brothers Reverend Walter (Lois), Gerald (Delores), and infant Elmer Ohrt; nephew Mark Smith; niece Suzanne Manley; and infant great-grandson Chase Warner. Helen grew up on the farm south of Regina and graduated from Regina secretarial school. One summer, the Rocky Mountains beckoned her to Alberta where she met her husband of 59 years, Allan Everett Myers of Strasbourg, SK. They married on July 3, 1946 and had two daughters Wendy and Sandra. They moved to Camrose and, in 1953, opened the very first fast food restaurant called Al’s Drive Inn. It was a very successful business and Al was the PR man and Helen was the bookkeeper and advertising queen. In 1962, they sold their business and moved to Vernon, BC. In 1967, they had the great fortune to acquire the KFC franchise and opened a Burger King drive-in. In 1981, they retired to Fairmont Hot Springs. Helen organized the first ladies’ golf club at Riverside Resort and served as first president. She played the piano by ear and was organist for the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron in 1977. Helen was an accomplished fisherlady, golfer, seamstress, knitter, crocheter, painter and card player, but due to her diminishing eyesight because of MD, she was unable to carry on with these joys in life. She especially enjoyed listening to music. Helen was predeceased by her daughter Wendy (age 57) from MS in 2004; and the love of her life Al in 2006 at age 83 at their retirement retreat in Mesa, AZ. After Al’s passing, she remained at their Fairmont home for five years and continued to winter in Arizona, close to her daughter Sandy and son-in-law Carl Krenning. Just before turning 90, Helen moved to Deer Meadows. On April 6, 2018, Sandy and Helen flew to Abbotsford, BC to the home city of her granddaughter Crystal Baker Warner (Jason) and great-granddaughter Riley, to a private full care facility. On April 25, a massive stroke took her into God’s hands at the glorious age of 96 plus – very well lived happy years. Helen, with a sparkle in her eyes and a big smile, always had kind words for everyone who met her. She will be sadly missed by her surviving daughter Sandy (Carl) Krenning; her younger sister Evelyn (Jack) Smith of North Battleford, SK; granddaughter Crystal (Jason) Warner, Lisa (Rob) Ardron and grandson Craig Baker; great-granddaughters Riley Warner, Paige (Dave) Bratiuk and Brittany Reed; nieces Lisa Rogalsky and Nancy Cowbell; nephews John and Paul Ohrt, Thane, Kent (Colleen) and Colin (Carolyn) Smith; and great-greatgrandson Braxton Bratiuk. Helen and Al were a great couple and will be missed by their many friends. A Celebration of Life for Helen will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Burgar Funeral Chapel, Camrose at 11 a.m. Please wear bright casual clothing.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Jaywalkers’ takes over downtown Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Rain or sunshine, Jaywalkers’ Jamboree attendees came out for the fun. Photos clockwise: Three-year-old Blake Poyser and mom Kari went round and round. Fox Tae Kwon-Do entertained guests with tumbling tricks. Shoppers Joanne Wilton, left and Helen Helgeland took advantage of bargains. Seven-year-old Addison Bishop slid down to solid ground. Thrill seekers were just hanging around during Jaywalkers’. Royals sit on top By Murray Green

The Armena Royals received a little help to stay on top in the Powerline Baseball League standings. Both the Royals and Edmonton Expos were previously unbeaten, however, the Expos dropped a 6-0 game to the Holden Blue Jays to leave Armena in first place. In other action on May

29, the Tofield Braves beat the Camrose Roadrunners 12-4, Leduc blanked Sherwood Park 10-0 and Rosalind chopped the Camrose Axemen 7-1. The Roadrunners edged Leduc 3-1 in a pitching battle on May 28. On June 7, Armena visits Sherwood Park, Holden takes on the Roadrunners, Edmonton travels to Rosalind and Leduc is in Tofield.
