Camrose and District Canada Day Committee members have worked very hard to put together an impressive program reminding us how fortunate we are to live in Camrose, Alberta, Canada. On Sunday, July 1st, the Camrose and District Centennial Museum grounds will be the site for everything from a wide range of musical talent to carnival games, sumo wrestling, free face painting, free acupuncture and a whole lot more. Especially noteworthy is that 2018 is the year that marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. It is also the 100th anniversary for the Canadian Mental Health Association. Come for the day or drop in for an hour or two. Don’t miss the opening ceremonies at 11:00 a.m. and fireworks at 11:15 p.m. at Rudy Swanson Park.

Camrose Police Service responded to a residence on 64 Street in the 3300 block after lightning struck the roof of the home. The Camrose Fire Department attended and monitored the smoldering attic. A traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle and the 36-year-old male driver had outstanding warrants out of Edmonton for stolen property and drugs. The vehicle was not insured or registered and the license plate did not match the vehicle. The vehicle was searched and the male was found to be in possession of break and enter tools, siphoning hoses and a quantity of methamphetamine. The male was charged accordingly and is waiting on a bail hearing.

Are you a fixed , or growth mindset?
So here we are, enjoying our glorious longest days of the year, heading into summer vacation season, and what am I thinking about? “Fixed versus growth: the two basic mindsets that shape our lives,” by Maria Popova in her online newsletter Brain Pickings. Sounds like a lot of fun and laughter, right? Okay, I’m being sarcastic. But as the school year winds down, I’m thinking about Maria Popova’s summary of research results described by Carol Dweck in Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. ***
Dweck describes two mindsets that shape our lives. The “fixed” mindset believes that we have fixed abilities that we cannot really change. “Failure” means we are in some way defective and cannot do anything about it. The “growth” mindset believes we can change and thrives on challenge. Failure is an opportunity for stretching our existing abilities. In a study of hundreds of students, each student was given 10 fairly challenging problems. All students were praised– most had done pretty well–but they were given two types of praise. One group of students was told, “Wow, you got [X many] right. That’s a really good score. You must be smart at this.” Another group of students was told, “Wow, you got [X many] right. That’s a really good score. You must have worked really hard.” In other words, some students were praised for their ability and others for their effort. The researchers found, “The ability praise pushed students right into the fixed mindset…when we gave them a choice, they rejected a challenging new task that they could learn from. They didn’t want to do anything that could expose their flaws….. In contrast, when students were praised for effort, 90 per cent of them wanted the challenging new task they could learn from.” In follow-up parts of the study, four findings emerged. 1: Response to less-than-success. The students were given a harder set of problems in which most students didn’t do so well. The students’ response? The ability-praised students thought they weren’t so smart or gifted after all. Dweck says, “If success meant they were intelligent, then less-thansuccess meant they were deficient.” But for the effort-praised students, less-successful results just meant they had to put in more effort. It was not a sign of failure or a reflection of their intellect. 2: Enjoyment. All the students enjoyed the first round of easier questions. When the questions got more challenging, the ability-praised students no longer had fun. The effortpraised students still enjoyed the problems and even said the more challenging, the more fun. 3: Performance. As the questions got harder, effortpraised students had significant improvements in their performance. Ability-praised students got worse, as if they were discouraged by their own success or failure mindset. 4: Honesty. The researchers asked the students to write private letters to their peers describing their experience, including a space to report their scores. Forty percent of the ability-praised students lied about their scores. Dweck’s comment: “In the fixed mindset, imperfections are shameful—especially if you’re talented—so the students lied them away. What’s so alarming is that we took ordinary children and made them into liars, simply by telling them they were smart.”
BRIDGE PROGRESS
Murray Green, Camrose Booster The bridge deck along 48 Avenue is starting to take shape over Mirror Lake as we head into summer. It will be wider and improve traffic flow once it is completed this fall. Right: An under the road walkway has been built to keep joggers, walkers and hikers on the trail and not slow down their routine or traffic. The proposed completion of the majority of the new bridge and installation of the new pedestrian underpass will be completed in July. Then construction of the new roadway along 48 Avenue between 51 Street and 53 Street will begin, and the electrical work on the pedestrian underpass structure starts.
***
In final exams students are writing this month, results not effort will be reported. Of course results matter. In the work world, when I’m hiring, I want people who are willing to learn new things and who already excel at the skills I need. Clients don’t care if team members tried hard and learned new things. Clients want results. But perhaps counter-intuitively, when we focus on effort, that actually improves results. I deeply appreciate the local piano teacher (and life lesson teacher) who, at the beginning of every recital says to the assembled parents, grandparents and siblings, “We all make mistakes in life. I tell the students that what’s important when they make a mistake is to pick themselves up and carry on.” Enough reflecting! Now I’m going out to enjoy the sunshine. ***

BRCF reports on good news during the open house By Lori Larsen
The Battle River Community Foundation Open House, held on June 19 at the Norsemen Inn, inspirited guests with an overall theme of reporting on the good in the world. BRCF chair, Vivianne Grue, set the stage with her message of how giving makes hearts smile and that despite all the not-so happy news in the world, this night was about sharing the good news. “In a world bent on sending us bad news in every form of media, tonight it is such a pleasure to talk about good things,” said Grue.
Vivianne Grue
Grue introduced the BRCF board members consisting of past chair Blain Fowler, chairman emeritus Ken Drever, vice-chairman David Ofrim, treasurer Imogene Walsh, secretary Kevin Gurr, board directors, Tom Chelmick, Jim Hampshire, Darryl Schultz Wally Wrubleski, and Leon Lohner, executive director Dana Andreassen and administration consultant Tom Kuntz and assistant Melanie Kuntz. “These individuals believe passionately in the community foundation, have and are contributing their resources, credibility and leadership.” Grue noted that BRCF, along with professional partners share collective knowledge, tools and connection to assist donors, save them time and make the gifting process easy. “The Community Foundation is most often just the right vehicle for meeting donors wishes, can grant to all sectors far and wide and goes on granting year after year, thus creating a true legacy gift. We can help you help your community.” Grue said that 2017 was a milestone year for BRCF, having exceeded the five million in grants made since its inception and that in the past year alone 20 new endowment funds were established. “The Foundation’s assets are approaching $15 million, ensuring an ongoing legacy of giving.” Past chairman Blain Fowler announced the
names of this year’s BRCF Community Builders honourees, Mardell and Verlyn Olson, who will be celebrated for their commitment to serving their community at the annual Community Builders Testimonial Dinner, to be held on Friday, Oct. 19 at the Norsemen Inn. “These dinners have a three fold purpose,” explained Fowler. “To recognize those who share the “giving back” philosophy that is so much a part of the success of our Foundation. To familiarize guests with the concept of the Community Foundation, how it functions and how it can help finance worthwhile community projects and initiatives. And, as a by-product of the above purposes, money is raised to establish funds in the name of our honourees, that will, in turn, do good work in their community.” In describing the good work of Mardell and Verlyn, Fowler said. “Through their own care and service, they have shown us how much they care, not just about today, but also about the future. They want to leave a community that is strong for those who follow. In that way, they share the vision of those of us who work with the Battle River Community Foundation.” Tickets for the Community Builders dinner go on sale Wednesday, August 8th.
Janet Hillaby
Janet Hillaby spoke on behalf of her husband Jim and herself about the Ricky James Hillaby Memorial Fund created through BRCF to honour their late son Ricky, who passed away in a tragic motor vehicle accident in 2000. She shared with guests how Ricky enjoyed children and how he was inspired to give back during his Bawlf Grade 12 class gift exchange at the Gwynne Home. “He repeated the gift exchange to the Gwynne Home even after graduation. I don’t know how many times.” To honour his memory Janet, Jim and Rick’s wife Debbie used undesignated moneys given in sympathy cards to create the Ricky
James Hillaby Memorial Fund. “We liked the BRCF suggestion because it was local and we could see the good it does and the donor advised option meant we could direct the available proceeds to an area that supported children. Ricky’s memorial fund has been supporting the Camrose Association For Community Living, Kandu Summer Camp, which is an inclusive camp for children with special health and developmental concerns. Jim, Debbie and I are pleased to have Rick’s legacy within the BRCF.” Speaking on the positive impact BRCF grants have on communities was Hay Lakes Library manager Amanda Barth, with assistance from Chariss Scott. “A library brings people together for self improvement or enjoyment.”
Amanda Barth
Barth described the variety of programs offered at the Hay Lakes Library including teen art therapy, seniors information sessions, early literacy, after school reading school program, spring and summer reading clubs and science days. She explained that the library organizes fundraisers as does the Friends of the Library Board Society, but indicated the fundraisers are not enough to keep up with the programing costs, reading material and library overhead. “That is where grants are vital to us. The library needs grants to allow us the ability to grow and try new things–allow us to change and to thrive.” After applying for a BRCF grant in 2015, to enhance the early literacy program, the library was able to purchase much needed items for the program. Barth related the satisfaction in being able to see the joy on the children’s faces when they discover the new toys or books and seeing the parents faces light up when they watch their children make art or sing a song. “To have adults and children come back to us time and time again to express their
appreciation and what the library means to them in their lives, is the best feeling in the world.” In an effort to put to words the deep gratitude Barth, on behalf of the Hay Lakes Library, has for the generous grants from BRCF she said, “We are able to be a support system when needed, be the hub of the community because of people like you. We are able to be the little library with the big heart.” BRCF director Wally Wrubleski introduced the evening’s guest speaker, 2013 recipient of the Rudy and Laura Baker Scholarship for Medicine, Dr. Michael Benusic. “Michael obtained his Bachelor of Science from University of Alberta and was then accepted into medical school at the University of British Columbia. He worked with the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland and did volunteer work in Vietnam.” Dr. Benusic completed his residency in family medicine in Toronto and worked as a physician in an Indigenous community in Red Lake, Ontario. He went on to complete his masters in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland in 2018 working on and off for the Smith Clinic (in Camrose). “It is great to be back in Camrose,” said Benusic. “I feel a sense of community and connection.” He described the gratitude he felt for receiving the Rudy and Flora Baker scholarship at a time when he was completing his third year of medical school and seventh year of university, and money was tight. “I used the scholarship to join a group of medical students in an international rotation in Vietnam where I worked at an infectious disease hospital.” He further related that what he saw and dealt with at this hospital, in a ward devoted to patients that had contracted tetanus, reaffirmed his passion to go into public health and focus on preventing diseases from happening as opposed to just treating them. “My ultimate goal is to work as a medical officer in health and be able to look after the health of an entire region. “Being able to work back in Camrose has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I feel like I have been able to give something back and see my hometown in a different light. I feel honoured to be able to have an impact on Camrose.” Benusic explained that the Canadian Medical Association predicts that approximately 25 per cent of what makes people healthy
is actually from health care systems and treatment given by physicians. “The remaining 75 per cent is what they call the social determinants of health– air, healthy upbringing, income, employment and really important, are the communities we live in and the social supports that we have. “As I flip through the BRCF annual report I think that they touch upon all the social determinants of health, such as funding athletics, education, or providing support to the most vulnerable and at risk in our society.”
Dr. Michael Benusic
He concluded with saying the donating that BRCF does is an investment into the health and strength of the communities they serve. “Personally receiving the Rudy and Laura Baker Scholarship for Medicine was an investment and I feel really fortunate now that I am able to repay it.” Benusic handed a cheque over to vice-chair David Ofrim as repayment and a token of paying it forward. “Congratulations on the work you have done and will continue to do.” Rounding up the evening, Ofrim recognized Vivianne Grue for her valued contributions to the Foundation since its inception in 1995. “She is the beating heart of the organization, never short on creative ideas, energy and above all passion. “Her contributions to the Foundation have been many and over the past two years Vivianne has steered our ship as we continue to prosper. It is now time for Vivianne to begin the next phase of her life. We wish her god speed and all the happiness she deserves.” Accepting a gift of a bouquet of beautiful bright flowers, reflective of her sunny disposition, Vivianne, through mixed emotion thanked the Foundation members and said, “You do make a difference for good.”

CWSS presents on backyard permaculture By Lori Larsen
Permacultures are an agricultural and social design system centred around simulating or directly utilizing the patterns and features observed in natural ecosystems. Join Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society (CWSS) summer programming at the Stoney
Creek Centre 5320-39 Avenue, in a presentation by permaculture teacher and designer Marsha Shack on how to improve your home, build your own garden and get involved in the community at 7 p.m. on June 28. Shack will be providing information on the practical movement of permaculture that
has schools, gardeners and governments creating change in their own backyards, communities and around the world. Anyone attending the CWSS events are invited to enter their names into a draw for a variety of prizes donated by local businesses, by filling out an evaluation on the event. The more events
you attend and fill out evaluations the more chances you will have to win. For more information on the Camrose Wildlife and Greenspace Stewardship programs and upcoming events contact Carolyn Cook at ccook2@ualberta.ca or by telephone at 780-672-0544.

Grade 9 École Camrose Composite High School student Coleton Chromik spends some of his spare time working on modelling and acting. “I have a buddy in Airdrie and I went to a movie set with him. I really liked it and thought it would be fun to try it out. They were filming a Netflix series east of Okotoks,” said Coleton. He could have been an extra on the set, but needed an agent. That’s when he decided to take the next step and get an agent. “I’ve done some modelling before and was in a couple of magazines in the United States. I enjoyed that, but wanted something more evolving like acting that had talking,” explained Coleton. “I started modeling a couple of years ago. My photographer from Vancouver sent some pictures to the US and they were used in modelling magazines,” added Coleton. He will be going to California in July to attend an acting camp. In fact, he won a $2,700 scholarship to attend those classes from his modelling auditions,” said his mom Norma Jean. Continued on page 17

Summer time thefts increase By Lori Larsen
Camrose Police Service wants to remind residents to do their part in protecting their property by locking up their homes, outbuildings and vehicles. The Eyes On Camrose Lock It or Lose It and Nightly at Nine initiatives are intended to encourage residents to be extra vigilant, especially in the summer when thefts are more prevalent. “Thefts, historically, increase in the summer and include thefts from vehicles, break and enters into garages or homes and theft of vehicles,” said Camrose Police Service crime prevention/community relations officer Constable Kelly Bauer. “It is also important during the summer holiday season to talk to your neighbors and let them know when you are gone so they can keep an eye on your property.” The Lock it or Lose It initiative encourages residents to lock their property at all times. “Leaving your vehicle unlocked even for a moment while you go into a store may result in your vehicle disappearing.” The Nightly at Nine initiative promotes residents getting into a routine of locking their properties every night at 9 p.m. “Go one step further and work with your next door neighbours to ensure their property is also locked,” suggested Bauer. “I have heard people say that they leave their vehicles unlocked because if someone is going to take it, they will steal it either way. My response to that is – the majority of thefts are a crime of opportunity where a criminal is looking for an unlocked vehicle. You could also be providing criminals with easy access to transportation. How would you like to know that your vehicle was used in the commission of an offence such as a robbery or, worse yet, someone was killed by their erratic driving?” Bauer added that people who do park their vehicles inside their garage should also remove the ignition keys and always lock the entry door from the attached garage to the house. On a final note, Constable Bauer stressed, “Lock, lock, lock your property – don’t allow yourself to be an easy victim.”

Acting school Plan Now For Their Future Needs Continued from page 14
“He came in third place out of 60 participants,” said his mom Norma Jean. He is prepared to learn acting “cold turkey.” “Actually, that way is better because when you go to an audition they give you a part to learn and in five minutes you have to do it.” He finds learning lines for commercials is better to do on the spot, rather than learning lines for a play over several months. “Sometimes they send me a script a day before or even an hour ahead of time, and that is how long I have to study and learn my lines. I don’t have time to be nervous, I just have to do it,” said Coleton, who turns 15 in July.

Celebrate Canada, our country By Arnold Malone
If in life you have a choice between being smart or being lucky, choose lucky every time. That adage also works well for countries. Canada is one of the world’s best countries in which to live. A committee of the United Nations has frequently placed Canada first among 200 countries (almost always in the top five) as the best country in which to live. Some of Canada’s merits comes from good government and a lot comes from our lucky circumstance. Sir John A. MacDonald and George Brown, two fathers of Confederation, made allowances for “…the uniqueness of Quebec…” That allowance included the right to use the Napoleonic Code, rather than British Common Law and that Quebecers’ are able to maintain their own language and culture, rather than be assimilated. Special allowances were also made for PEI, the territories and Newfoundland. This is different in the USA, which considers it’s self a “melting pot”. In the US, persons who arrive from afar are assimilated into the American mainstream. As a result in Canada, we have grown into a nation that is more cosmopolitan and acceptant of a wider range of cultures and practices. Canada did not emerge into nationhood out of a war with our founding nations. Rather, we evolved over the better part of a century. Our association with the British Empire/ Commonwealth made us internationally curious and our current news outlets still reflect that. The news in most countries is singular and internal. Since the sun never set on the British Empire/Commonwealth and Britain had interests in colonies spread far and wide, Canada also became interested in the events of the world. Even today, Canadian news is often more international than is American or most other countries. We grew up reflecting on ourselves within a wider world. The North-West Mounted Police were in the west prior to its settlement. The result was that we did not have the history where every village created their own law in an untamed frontier. The period of the lawless west in the USA was very short, just 20 years, 1840-60, but it lead to many pulp fiction stories. Later, Hollywood’s western films, along with the complicated mishmash of the second amendment, fostered a gun culture that is now a fixed characteristic of the American lifestyle. Canada has been blessed by an abundance of resources. We have a surplus of oil and gas, forests far and wide, a host of mineral wealth and more fresh water than any other nation. We also are rich in tourist opportunities. It is possible for another country to be blessed with an abundance of resources and yet have a nation that is dull to the eye. Canada is a land of diverse breath-taking beauty. That beauty is important for our love of nation. It is also a huge tourist draw. One advantage–that is seldom reflected upon–is our abundance of space. More than half of the world’s population lives in 30 of the world’s most populated cities. Here, we can stretch and never skin our knuckles. We have also had the luxury of being side by side with a dynamic industrial nation with the world’s longest unguarded boarder. The US had a major influence on our capacity to create wealth. They are also our biggest consumer of export goods and only a borderline away. They have had a positive influence on our practice of democracy. Canada is more than moose, mountains, Mounties, Canada Geese and beavers. We are our own culture. In some ways, more like the Americans than the Europeans and in other characteristics, more like the Nordic countries than the Americans. All in all, we are lucky to be Canadian. This is a country worth celebrating – Happy Canada Day!

The automotive section of
Corvette in museum condition thrives on highways By Murray Green
Ray Wandler of Bashaw purchased a yellow 1966 Chevrolet Corvette in the United States to bring back and restore. It was the second last year before a complete redesign in 1968. “The 1966 and 1967 models were my favourite years and today they are worth the most money. I have two – one is a hard top, coupe and the other one is a convertible. The convertible is worth about $10,000 more than the coupe,” shared Ray. The Chevrolet Corvette (C2) (also known as the Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray) is the second generation of the Chevrolet Corvette sports car, produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors for the 1963 to 1967 model years. “I’ve had the Corvette for about 10 years. I have done absolutely nothing to it. It came out of a car museum in Scottsdale, Arizona where it sat for about 15 years.” For the 1966 Corvette, the big-block V-8 came in two forms: 390 hp (290 kW) on 10.25:1 compression, and 425 bhp via 11:1 compression, larger intake valves, a bigger Holley four-barrel carburetor on an aluminum manifold, mechanical lifters, and four- instead of twohole main bearing caps. “I’m glad I didn’t have to do anything to it because Corvettes are hard to work on. It has a fibreglass body, so a lot of people don’t know how to do the bodywork on them,” explained Ray. Though it had no more horsepower than the previous high-compression 396, the 427 cu. in. (7,000 cc), 430-hp (320 kW) V8 packed a lot more torque – 460 lb./ft from 415 lb./ft. “It’s good that it is in really nice shape. It has a 327 Chev motor with 350 horsepower and a four-speed transmission.” All power ratings in the ’60s were also done in SAE gross horsepower, which is measured based on an engine without accessories or air filter or restrictive stock exhaust manifold, invariably giving a significantly higher rating than the engine actually produces when installed in the automobile.
CORVETTE CLASSIC
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Ray Wandler of Bashaw rescued this 1966 Chevrolet Corvette convertible from sitting in a museum in Scottsdale, Arizona and gave it the freedom of hitting the Alberta highways.
“I like to take it to shows, or drive it to Saskatchewan. I used to go to the Corvette show down in the States for many years, but it became a hassle after awhile. The Corvette owners down there are such fanatics and some are worth $250,000,” said Ray. SAE net horsepower is measured with all accessories, air filters and factory exhaust system in place; this is the standard that all automobile engines have been rated at since 1972. With big-block V-8s being the order of the day, there was less demand for the 327, so small-block offerings were cut from five to two for 1966, and only the basic 300- and 350-bhp versions were retained. Both required premium fuel on compression ratios well over 10.0:1, and they didn’t have the rocket-like thrust of the 427s, but their performance was impressive. Both could be teamed with the Powerglide automatic, the stan-
dard three-speed manual, or either four-speed option. “In the States, some people don’t even start them. They push them in and out of trailers. I’m not like that. I bought the car to drive and enjoy. I don’t believe in having a $250,000 car just to sit in a trailer.” The 1966 model’s frontal appearance was mildly altered with an eggcrate grille insert to replace the previous horizontal bars and the coupe lost its roofmounted extractor vents, which had proven inefficient. “It is a nice driving car with very little maintenance. The car is pretty simple, not like cars are today,” said Ray. Corvettes also received an emblem in the corner of the hood for 1966. Head rests were a new option, one of the rarest options was the Red/Red Automatic option with power windows and air conditioning from factory, which records show production numbered only seven convertibles and 33 coupes.
This relative lack of change reflected plans to bring out an all-new Corvette for 1967. It certainly did not reflect a fall-off in the car’s popularity, however. In fact, 1966 would prove another record-
busting year, with volume rising to 27,720 units, up some 4,200 over 1965s sales. Hopefully, Ray will try to bring his Corvette to Camrose for the June 30 show on Main Street.

Spirals take on the world in Florida By Murray Green
The Camrose Spirals team of Harlee Rasmussen, left, Keeley Lansom, Charlie Broughton, Felicity Fenrich and coach Jodi Harrison are off to the world competition.
The Camrose Spirals skip rope club will be sending four competitors and a coach to the World Jump Rope Championships this summer. Coach Jodi Harrison and skip rope athletes Harlee Rasmussen, Keeley Lansom, Charlie Broughton and Felicity Fenrich will be competing in Orlando, Florida from July 1 to 9. “This is the first time all four athletes will be going to Worlds. There are more than 900 athletes expected at the competition, so we are going to gain experience at the World level and do the best we can,” said coach Harrison. “We have Charlie, Keeley and Harlee competing in the junior category and Felicity in the senior category.” They will be competing as a team in speed events. Charlie and Felicity will be in a pairs freestyle event and Harlee and Keeley as a pair in the younger freestyle event. They will also be in several individual events throughout the week. As a team, they placed second at Nationals. “Harlee set some speed records at Provincials and then matched them at Nationals,” said coach Harrison. With two other girls, another team placed fourth. “Most of the events will be in the first four days. Then the top 10 in each category will compete in the final show called grands,” explained coach Harrison. “Only the seniors get to be in the grand show.”
The athletes can’t wait to go to Florida to compete. “I’m very excited to go to worlds for the first time. I expect to see a lot of amazing skippers,” shared Harlee. “It is really exciting and its my first time out of Canada, so I’m a little scared too,” added Keeley. “It will be exciting to see all of the different teams and learn some different tricks,” shared Charlie. After the competition, the girls will be enrolled in a two-day camp. “It will be good to see tricks we haven’t learned yet,” she added. “I know that Australia has some amazing records, so I would like to see how their coaches coach there. I want to see all of the really fast people (speed skippers) there from all around the world,” said Felicity. Top competitors will be from the United States, Japan, Australia, Europe and Canada. “Japan performs doubledutch fusion that we don’t have in Canada. It is a combination of hip-hop and skipping. In the next two years, two organizations are merging and we may see double-dutch fusion in Canada then,” shared coach Harrison. It won’t be all work for the girls. A day trip to Disneyworld has also been planned. “It’s exciting to see these girls go and compete at another level. I’m also going as a judge, as well as coaching. It will be a very busy week for me,” the coach added.

1945 ~ 1998 You left us twenty years ago, And you’re still missed – just so you know. Your smile, your voice, your laugh, your grace, These things we simply can’t replace. Your healing hugs – your loving touch, Are things we miss so very much. We keep you close – in heart and soul, But there is still this gaping hole. And while we try to remain strong, It’s been so hard to say so long. You were the best mom you could be, Same goal as us – your daughters three. Your presence some days we still feel, Which has helped each of us to heal. Those left behind, oft think of you, We hope you’re proud of all we do! – Roxanne, Nadean, Naomi and family

Berle Wayne Radchenko September 14, 1952 ~ June 18, 2018 Berle Wayne Radchenko was born to Nicholas and Cecelia Radchenko on September 14, 1952. Nick (predeceased) and Cecelia (predeceased) moved from North Battleford, SK to Highgate, SK in 1957 and resided there until 1959. They moved the family south of Battleford where they began their farming career. Berle was the third youngest amongst the six children. Berle moved from the farm in 1970 to work with his brother Garry at a pipeline company. He went to school at NAIT in 1973. He met Rita, the woman of his dreams, in November 1973, while they both attended business administration at NAIT. He said that he knew within hours that he would marry her. They wed on July 5, 1975, just a month after he began his career with the bank. Berle and Rita lived in Edmonton until 1976 when they moved to Champion, AB. Berle advanced in his career and relocated to Redwater, then High Level, later returned to Champion, and eventually settled in Lacombe for seven years. Berle collected trophies for his athleticism in curling, golf, slopitch, fishing, horseshoes and bunnock. Besides playing sports, he equally participated as a spectator, cheering loudly from the living room each time his beloved Detroit Red Wings took the ice. He was an avid Saskatchewan Roughriders and Toronto Blue Jays fan. In 1988, they moved with their six children to Uncle Peter Gartner’s farm southwest of Daysland, across the field from Rita’s parents. Two additional children later, they completed their perfect family of two girls and six boys. Berle started a new career with Flagstaff County in 1989 and eventually became gravel foreman. During his 18 years with the County, he was respected by fellow employees for his hard work and sense of humour. Due to health issues, he retired in February 2008. They embraced city life in October 2013 when they moved to Camrose. In 2015, Berle and Rita celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary at the farm, where they had often hosted family gatherings. Berle passed away on Monday, June 18, 2018, at the age of 65. Berle leaves behind his wife Rita; and eight loving children Anna Radchenko (Rob Maurier) of St. Albert, Dawn (Daryl) Ellertson of Calgary, Tony (Becky) of Calgary, Derek (Katie) of Sherwood Park, John (Bonny) of Camrose, Robert (Ashley) of Daysland, Steve of Camrose, and Kevin of Devon. He adored his grandchildren Taylor, Noah, Jaeden, Alysse, Lucian, Christina (predeceased), Brody, Samuel, Zachary, Elijah, Emma, Kennedy, Campbell, Jesse and Paxton. Berle also leaves behind his sister Bev (Doug) Petrie of Edmonton; and brothers Loran (Carole) of Calgary, Garry (Pat) of Kamloops, Brian (Pat) of Battleford, SK and Garth Radchenko (Shelly Rye) of Dundurn, SK. A Prayer Vigil was held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2018, from Our Lady of the Prairies Roman Catholic Church in Daysland, AB. A Funeral Mass was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 22, 2018, from Our Lady of the Prairies Roman Catholic Church in Daysland with Rev. Len Gartner officiating. Interment will take place in the Daysland Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Canadian Diabetes Association. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results!
LOST and FOUND
Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The Lions Centennial Park, aka Downtown Pocket Park, located mid 50 Street on the west side of the road beside Dairy Queen, is nearing completion with a few items to be added. By Lori Larsen
The Lions Centennial Park (Est. 2017), also known as the Downtown Pocket Park, has seen completion of phase one and is near completion of phase two, according to City of Camrose senior development officer Colin MacPhee. “All of the foundational design elements of the park space are in place,” explained MacPhee, “Including the entrance feature archway, concrete hard surfacing, electrical servicing, light standard and fencing.” Thus far, financial support for the project includes a total of $72,700 from the City of Camrose and a total of $131,650 from organizations, corporations and private citizens that have included donation of land acquisition and construction. “It became obvious, in the absence of having enough money, that maybe there were other ways to accomplish things by various fundraising activities and, quite frankly, the outreach of the Swans and Roses Lions Club to the office of planning and development to try and see what we could do about getting more direct community support for the project.” MacPhee told council that the remaining design elements for the completion of the park consist of the performance stage, which has since been constructed
through volunteer donations of material and time by the Swans and Roses Lions Club members, the planters and landscaping and outdoor furniture. “We have three surplus park benches in mint condition and have obtained the Lions Friendship Arch, a feature which will display permanent recognition of all donors at the front of the park,” explained MacPhee. MacPhee said that through innovation and ingenuity, they have managed to get the financial situation into a much more manageable state and that they continue to receive additional donations and continue applying for grants. “With the moneys we have we will realize the completion of all the primary design elements, but that is not to say that we cannot have some added with the additional funds.” MacPhee indicated that at this point, the mural has a very high cost attached to it and that despite some research on his part, he has been unable to attain any people who specifically do mural art of this nature. “In essence, by removing the mural from the situation, we have a remaining financial need of $20,171 and the current balance in the account is $21,370, with $5,000 of those moneys for contingency items.” In summary, MacPhee
stated that the project, at this time, is fully funded (less the mural). “It has been a lot of outreach and support from the Camrose community, especially the Swans and Roses Lions Club. We would not be where we are today without them and we will continue to make the park a great space in the downtown.” Councillor Agnes Hoveland inquired as to whether or not MacPhee has investigated local artists for the mural work. “We have some outstanding artists in the community.” MacPhee said at this point, in light of the fact that the funding doesn’t exist, he has not wanted to waste any mural artists’ time should the funds not become available. “All additional funds that we receive will go towards getting the mural done, additional outdoor furniture and any improvements that we think we would like to do.” Cou ncillor Ma x Lindstrand expressed hope that the historical Duggan Foodland signage currently existing on the wall of the south building of the park, be incorporated into a mural or remain in some fashion. MacPhee assured Councillor Lindstrand that would be the case.
City helps fund Showcase ice rental By Lori Larsen
City of Camrose council approved the request from the Camrose Sport Development Society (CSDS aka Camrose Kodiaks) for financial support of $12,000 to assist in the cost of ice rental for the 2018 Showcase Weekend for Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). The funds will be taken from the Community Support GL account. The 2018 Showcase Weekend will take place on Sept. 27 to 29 at the Camrose Recreation Centre and
will host 16 teams in the AJHL, team staff and families during the three day event. “We anticipate that this year there will be a total of 480 players and management coming to Camrose,” said CSDS secretary Kevin Pratt in a presentation to City Council on June 4. “In addition to showcasing the amazing talent in the AJHL, the Showcase Weekend also showcases our City while bringing a substantial amount of revenue to the City,” said Pratt. Pratt noted the finan-
cial contributions made to the City of Camrose for 2017-18 ice rental and facilities rental totaled $125,042.13 as well as the following financial contributions of $300,000 for sky boxes, $100,000 for air conditioning, $15,000 for renovations to the Bear Den, $175,000 for big screen TV, $125,000 for Max McLean dressing rooms, $100,000 for Encana dressing rooms and $40,000 for an ill-fated ticketing system.

A traffic stop was conducted by Camrose Police on a vehicle with a license plate that didn’t match. The vehicle was towed after it was determined that it was neither registered nor insured. The appropriate violation tickets were issued. A male reported that he had just confronted two men who were in the process of stealing his motorized scooter, while parked at his residence on 50 street in the 5200 block. A description of
the males and their vehicle were provided to police. A pressure washer was stolen from a residence on 41 Street in the 5200 block. A female reported to police that a male was contacting her contrary to his conditions. Police investigated and determined that the female was initiating the contact with the male who was actually refraining from replying to her. Charges of public mischief are pending against the female for making a false statement to police.
