Canadian Northern Society (Camrose Railway Station) will host a special presentation this summer: Coal – The End of An Era. In the early 1900s, coal was one of the key forces driving commerce, expansion and settlement in key areas of Alberta. In fact, it was the coal mining business which was the primary reason for Canadian Northern Railway to build a rail line between Vegreville and Drumheller, with a major stopping point in the village of Camrose. On Saturday, July 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., stop by the popular, highly informative museum to learn about the historical importance of this industry and to enjoy activities associated with coal. There will be storytelling for adults and children, a tea ceremony, scones and poetry. Examine the displays and archives depicting the use of coal that led to the boom of the railway’s “Age of Steam”. Children can ride on the Percy-like train. Tour the gardens and other historic buildings. Wave at the train as it goes by the Station Garden Railway where period trains will be running. Enjoy a display of local-area art on the theme of fireside activities of ages gone by. You will even be able to purchase and enjoy a self-serve light miner’s lunch in the Station Beanery ( a common name for station restaurants in early days).
