Canadian Northern Society (Camrose Railway Station) will host a special presentation this summer: Coal – The End of An Era. In the early 1900s, coal was one of the key forces driving commerce, expansion and settlement in key areas of Alberta. In fact, it was the coal mining business which was the primary reason for Canadian Northern Railway to build a rail line between Vegreville and Drumheller, with a major stopping point in the village of Camrose. On Saturday, July 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., stop by the popular, highly informative museum to learn about the historical importance of this industry and to enjoy activities associated with coal. There will be storytelling for adults and children, a tea ceremony, scones and poetry. Examine the displays and archives depicting the use of coal that led to the boom of the railway’s “Age of Steam”. Children can ride on the Percy-like train. Tour the gardens and other historic buildings. Wave at the train as it goes by the Station Garden Railway where period trains will be running. Enjoy a display of local-area art on the theme of fireside activities of ages gone by. You will even be able to purchase and enjoy a self-serve light miner’s lunch in the Station Beanery ( a common name for station restaurants in early days).

More than 1,000 cases of diabetes in Camrose By Jane Yardley, assistant professor physical education, University of Alberta Augustana Campus
Did you know that the country in the world that has the highest rate of diabetes is the Republic of the Marshall Islands? This small group of Pacific islands occupies 181 km2 and had a population of 53,158 during its 2016 census. According to the International Diabetes Federation 2017 statistics, over 32.9 per cent of their population has a diabetes diagnosis. Part of this health problem is attributed to high rates of obesity among inhabitants of the Marshall Islands, where carrying more weight has always been a sign of wealth, affluence and beauty. This, and a high genetic predisposition, explains why another four Pacific island nations round out the top five countries in the world for diabetes: Tuvalu, Tokelau, Nieu and New Caledonia. Canada is doing much better in this regard, ranking 83rd in the world with 9.6 per cent of the population diagnosed with diabetes (either type 1 or type 2). Alberta, as a province seems to be doing better than the national average, with an estimated 7.2 per cent prevalence.
ON TRACK
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Augustana assistant professor Jane Yardley, left, and research assistant Becca Dyck, right, monitor a patient through exercise testing at the Camrose Recreation Centre. Local diabetes patients are encouraged to learn more about diets and exercise.
According to Statistics Canada, the population of Camrose was 18,520 in the 2016 census. This means that there are probably around 1,333 people in Camrose with diabetes. Chances are you know
one, or even several people affected by diabetes. Almost 95 per cent of people diagnosed with diabetes will have type 2 diabetes. We know that people with type 2 diabetes usually benefit from improvements in diet and
an increase in physical activity. We also know that not everyone sees the same level of benefit from becoming more active. Researchers at the University of Alberta, both in Edmonton and at the Augustana Faculty in
Camrose are starting a study to look at whether specific habits, such as the time of day when physical activity is performed, could be one of the reasons why some people see greater benefits than others. This research would not be possible without the participation of volunteers who have type 2 diabetes. Just as all medications need to be tested in a clinical setting before they can be prescribed widely to patients, treatments like physical activity and diet are thoroughly tested in a lab environment before specific courses of action are recommended to patients, to ensure the treatments are effective. The study now taking place in Camrose is looking at how walking at different times of day affects blood glucose in the following 24 hours, to see if one time of day is better than another. If you have type 2 diabetes, live in Camrose, and would like to know more about how you can be involved in this type of research, contact Dr. Jane Yardley at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta. She can be reached by email jane. yardley@ualberta.ca or by phone 780-679-1688 to answer any questions you might have about this research initiative.

The sound of silence
I popped my head out of the water. Everything was quiet. One of my summer adventures has been adult swim lessons. As a child, I took lessons in the oldendays outdoor pool at the south end of Main Street Camrose. I never got good at swimming and never liked putting my head under water. During my pre-beginner adult swim lessons, the initial focus was simply learning to be comfortable in water (Hah! Easy for the swim instructor to say!). In Lesson 2, we were learning to put our heads under the water. I knew this is what I needed to do if I was ever going to swim. It was also what I dreaded most. Finally I just did it–dunked my entire head under water. More than once, even. Pause here for small moment of personal pride–I did it–mixed with how much I didn’t like the feeling. That’s when I popped my head above water and everything was eerily quiet. My ears were full of water. I couldn’t hear.
SHOW OF PATRIOTISM
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Some of the residents of Heritage Manor purchased a total of 16 flags from the Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak for the Flag Project fundraiser. The flags are installed prior to Canada Day, July 1 and Labour Day, Sept. 3 then removed shortly after each holiday.
***
Oddly enough, my first sensation was relief. Swimming pools are noisy. High ceilings, hard surfaces, people shouting. I loved that the noise had gone away. My second sensation was the weirdness of feeling my ears plugged. I was in a cocoon of silence. I’ve had plugged ears before. Every previous time there was a specific moment when something went “pop” and my hearing was back. Not this time. A day went by and then another day. Following the swimming instructor’s suggestion, I tipped my head to each side so the water would run out of my ears. It didn’t. A visit to a medical clinic resulted in a recommendation for ear drops, which I used. I also kept popping my ears. Still almost no hearing. There was never a pop to have my hearing return. It was just a gradual improvement until one day I realized my hearing seemed almost back to normal. ***
In the meantime, I was amazed at how much I appreciated being in a cocoon of semi-silence. Traffic sounds, people noises, equipment, TV–the muted sounds were a relief. I had no idea how much the everyday noise of urban life affected me. On the other hand, some days I spend several hours on the phone in conference calls or long-distance business conversations. Voices sounded faint and far away, and I knew I was not hearing everything clearly–a definite disadvantage. Yes, some miscommunication happened. I once listened to several people talk of the impact of losing their hearing. One woman estimated she missed about one-third of what people said to her, and described how it interfered with every aspect of her life. The hard-of-hearing people gave instructions about how to make it easier for people with hearing loss to hear the rest of us. Face them when speaking with them. Project our voices. Enunciate, not just so they can hear better, but so they can see the shape of our moving lips. My voice does not project well. I felt like I was shouting all the time, but to them it sounded ordinary volume. I found myself getting impatient.

***
Three takeaways now that my hearing is back: 1. Having had the temporary experience, I’m more patient with people who are hard of hearing. 2. I’m more aware of the relentless toll of background noise. Those of us who spend time in noisy work or home environments probably use more energy than we know fending off the background noise while trying to hear specific voices or other sounds within that noise. 3. I’m more appreciative of the gift of hearing–not just the ability to hear sounds (especially music and the voices of people I treasure), but the powerful impact hearing has on our ability to connect with fellow human beings. I realize even more what a gift hearing is. P.S. I’m still not a swimmer, but a somewhat improved dog paddler. *** Do you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics? Rural transportation pilot project announced for Camrose By Lori Larsen
Alberta Minister of Transportation Brian Mason was at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus on June 28 to announce the approval of the Rural Transportation Pilot Program. The City of Camrose will be one of four projects, expected to be up and running this fall. All four projects will receive a total of more than $1.4 million over two years as part of the program which is funded through the 2018 provincial budget. Camrose will receive two grants consisting of one that will be more than $450,000 to establish a regular bus shuttle service between Camrose and Edmonton and the second grant, of more than $137,000, to hire a regional transit coordinator who will oversee ride-sharing opportunities in the area. MLA for WetaskiwinCamrose, Bruce Hinkley opened the event with introductions of dignitaries and special guests and expressed his appreciation of the Rural Transportation Pilot Program. “As the MLA for this region I know first hand how many rural Albertans will be happy to have access to improved transportation. The options will allow us to connect them to other communities. Our government recognizes that support is needed to ensure all Albertans have safe, sustainable and affordable options to get where they need to go and that is why we are here today.” Hinkley introduced minister Mason who explained to attendees that the Rural Transportation project has been a long time coming. “We have had several tries at coming up with a program. What we have settled on is a pilot program that is designed to connect rural communities with regional centres like Camrose,” said Mason. “The program is a direct result of hearing from community leaders and residents in our rural communities.” Mason indicated that the pilot project resulted from conversations throughout 2016-17 with Albertans and municipalities, hearing that enhanced regional public transportation is a priority for rural Alberta. “I have spoken to many Albertans in smaller communities who have been frustrated by the lack of public transportation.” He further explained that the pilot project is designed to provided additional resources to fill in gaps and build a more comprehensive system where rural areas and small centres can connect to regional centres like Camrose. “Here in Camrose a
new shuttle will offer three round trips every week day, giving riders easy access to Edmonton for school, medical appointments, jobs or shopping,” noted Mason. “A second Camrose project will dovetail with the shuttle service by giving rural residents the opportunity to share rides with others who are heading to and from nearby destinations and that should make it much more affordable for those people to make trips into Camrose from those parts of the region.” Mason added that the new shuttle service will be especially important to many of the students at Augustana campus. “We are also going to be working to improve rural transportation in the Grande Prairie region and the Town of Spirit River.”
Edmonton, as well as the additional support that we will be able to provide to bring persons from other outlying areas into Camrose, to connect with a transportation system that can get them to the city (Edmonton.)” Mayer said the City has addressed local transportation with the Community Bus program but also has concerns for people not being able to get to the city (Edmonton) for medical appointments or other appointments and certainly in the education world as well. “Distance remains a real factor for rural communities in Alberta, particularly for younger citizens and for the large proportion of seniors who live in rural Alberta. Systematic and regionally based

Standing in front of the bus to be used for the program are left to right back row Maskwacis elder Roy Louis, director Alberta Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities University of Alberta, Augustana Campus Lars Hallstrom, Pacific Western Group of Companies director, sales and business development John Stepovy, and Association for Life-wide Living of Alberta Jack Ross. Front row left to right, MLA Wetaskiwin-Camrose Bruce Hinkley, Alberta minister of transportation Brian Mason, City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer and Association for Life-wide Living of Alberta Jane Ross. Seated in front is Wild Rose Villa Transportation Committee (Camrose) representative Betty Marks.
Mason stressed that the Rural Transportation Pilot Program is intended to lay the foundation for future transportation options across rural Alberta. “Members of the Rural Municipalities of Alberta and our neighbouring communities who are eligible for this program are happy to hear that the Government of Alberta is putting dollars to support our public transportation needs. Our communities need better access to education, health care, jobs and to connect with families, so this is a step in the right direction.” Mayor Norm Mayer expressed appreciation on behalf of himself, city councillors and the city, for the announcement by the Alberta government regarding the Rural Transportation Pilot Program. “We look forward to the opportunity of working with the programs that we have proposed and transportation between here and
transportation initiatives such as this are ideal for communities such as Camrose, and are a major step forward in keeping rural communities connected.” Mayer acknowledged that the program is a pilot project, but indicated that the City of Camrose is pleased to be part of the program. “This is a great day for Camrose and area, to be able to have this facility structured. We look forward to working with the government and all the providers and wish to thank Red Arrow for coming to the forefront with the program that was proposed.” On behalf of the Alberta Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities (CSRC) and the University of Alberta Augustana Campus, CSRC director Lars Hallstrom related the importance of the pilot program, particularly to young Albertans and students and thanked, not only the government of Alberta and

officials but all advocates of rural transportation expansion. “This is not just about bringing people to Edmonton but bringing people to Camrose as well. We know that we have a huge amount of people in the surrounding communities who use Camrose as their service hub for any number of different services. Building this combined city to city connection but also small communities to Camrose is really the right way
to approach transportation and moving people around. “For a rural community with a university campus, the ability for students and, youth more generally, to also be able to move is really important. If the loss of youth from rural communities is seen as a challenge then one way to keep them in our smaller communities is to find ways to connect them beyond just an I-Phone and Facebook and this has those kinds of benefits.”
Collision claims 16-year-old Submitted
Camrose RCMP attended the scene of a six-vehicle collision resulting in the death of a local 16-year-old female, on June 27, occurring at approximately 6 p.m., at the intersection of Highway 21 and Township Road 474. The 16-year-old female passenger of one of the vehicles that had slowed for traffic ahead was pronounced dead on scene. The three other occupants of that vehicle were transported to area hospitals in serious condition. A section of Highway 21 between Township roads 472 and 480 was shut down while emergency crews attended the victims and scene and the collision was investigated by an RCMP collision reconstructionist. Preliminary investigation suggests that three northbound vehicles had slowed for traffic in front that had slowed to make a left turn. A northbound box truck collided with this line of traffic from behind. The resulting impact forced two middle vehicles, in between the lead vehicle and the box truck, left of centre
which were then struck by two southbound vehicles. All other vehicles involved in the collision had lone occupants, four of which are being treated for various non-life threatening injuries. The collision remains under investigation. No charges have been laid at this time. Camrose RCMP are asking any witnesses to the collision who have yet to come forward to contact them at 780-672-3341. June 25
A woman received an alert from Microsoft advising she was hacked. This was determined to be fraudulent and she was scammed out of more than $1,000. Bashaw RCMP remind locals to be careful and not to provide personal banking information to anyone over the phone or Internet. A truck was stolen from a Bashaw residence overnight. Police later located the vehicle and it was returned to the registered owner without incident.

The Camrose Public Library always has something going on, whether that be one of a variety of informative programs and sessions offered for adults or youth/children, hosting special events, providing essential library services as well as a multitude of other services that meet and exceed the needs of the community. In a presentation to City of Camrose Council, Camrose Public Library director Deb Cryderman, technology literacy coordinator Carley Angelstad and children’s programming coordinator Nicole Bannick spoke of the important role the library plays to the residents of Camrose and area. Cryderman began by thanking council for selecting an incredible board. “It is rewarding to work with people who represent the community who are so positive and encouraging, are visionaries, and are able to take leaps of faith with us. They are strong advocates who are passionate about the library and the services we offer.” Angelstad presented on the mandate of the library to support and promote literacy of all forms. “The library is a space that is flexible to community need and always strives to support a literate, informed and democratic society. To achieve this, our library is working to promote many forms of literacy, not least of all, digital literacy.” Angelstad explained according to the American Library Association digital literacy is the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills. She further noted that the library aims to provide digital literacy programs that are accessible, engaging and fun for all ages. The library offers the STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Arts and Math) after-school program for grade school students. Youth (teens) are introduced to 3D printing, virtual reality, coding and more. “We offer a weekly Tech Tutoring Class for adults and seniors as well,” said Angelstad. In conclusion, Angelstad listed the benefits of digital literacy. “Digital literacy skills support increased social connection, reduces senior poverty, promotes identity building, encourages lifelong learning and helps bridge the cultural gap between generations.” CPL children’s programming coordinator Nicole Bannick related
the importance of building partnerships. “Like all libraries, we partner with our municipal government in all that we do,” said Bannick. “Partnerships help us share and extend our resources, be they financial, skill-based, or people-power, which helps the library and other community organizations achieve more for our community.” Bannick listed some of the partnerships CPL shares including Camrose Family Literacy, Battle River School Division, Canadian Parents for French, Camrose Early Childhood Development Coalition, Family Resource Centre, Augustana Battle River Writing Centre and child care facilities. “Forging connections and partnerships with other not-for-profit and human service organizations is so important to community building. Rather than re-making the wheel, we invite organizations into our space to host info sessions and workshops, or ask them how they could use our services and programs in their spaces.” Examples of community organizations using the library to offer these sessions and workshops include Service Options for Seniors, Primary Care Network, Jeanne & Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre, Chuck Maclean Arts Centre, About Time Production, Family Violence Action Society, Cam-
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose Public Library (CPL) staff along with Mayor Norm Mayer and City council show the awards won by the library during a council meeting. Front row left to right are CPL summer student Jennifer Laskosky, councillor Kevin Hycha, Agnes Hoveland, Cathie Johnson, CPL summer student Liana Nand, Mayor Norm Mayer, CPL director Deb Cryderman, CPL technology and literacy coordinator Carley Angelstad and CPL children’s programming coordinator Nicole Bannick.
rose Mental Health Association and The Open Door. Bannick indicated reasons why it is important for the library and local businesses to develop partnerships “Children who develop a love of reading are more likely to mature into engaged citizens and engaged citizens invest in their community by shopping locally and contributing to a healthy workforce.” Some local businesses offer incentives to shoppers who possess and show a valid CPL card and also offer their expertise to library programs. “At their core, libraries
are based in literacy and education, but are customer-service driven,” noted Bannick. “By forming partnerships with other community organizations, we are helping to fill gaps in service.” In recognition of the good work being done, the library was the recipient of the following four awards; the 2017 Chamber of Commerce Community Spirit Award, the 2016 Minister’s Award of Excellence for the Book Bike program, the 2018 Award of Excellence for the Snacks in the Stacks program and the 2018 Alberta Library
Trustees Award of Excellence for the library board. A testament of the good work done by CPL came in the form of several handwritten letters from local children commending the Library’s Snacks in the Stacks program, which were sent to the minister of municipal affairs Shaye Anderson. On top of receiving these awards, CPL technology literacy coordinator Carley Angelstad won the 2018 Lorne MacRae Intellectual Freedom Award for the work she completed in breaking barriers to digital literacy for seniors.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster On June 25, Mayor Norm Mayer, centre in the presence of Camrose Visitor Information Centre tourism clerks Beliana Slikker, left and Kennedy Schaffner, right, signed a proclamation declaring July 1 to 7 Be a Tourist in Your Own Town. By Lori Larsen
A great adventure lays right outside your doorstep within Camrose. If you are looking for some fun things to do and explore, look no further. The 14th annual Be a Tourist in Your Own Town runs until July 6. The Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce/Visitor Information Centre encourages everyone to take advantage of the exciting activities, sights and attractions right here in your own hometown. The summer students at the Camrose Visitor Information Centre have hosted a Be a Tourist in Your Own Town week for the past 14 summers. “This event is to encourage Camrosians to get out and explore the great community they live in,” said one of this year’s visitor centre’s tourism clerks Beliana Slikker. “It is also a great way to promote local businesses. We have different events throughout the week that target people of all ages. Most of our events are family oriented and for all ages to enjoy.” Special events hosted by the Chamber/Visitor Centre Summer students during the Be a Tourist in Your Own Town week include the following. On Tuesday, July 3, from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m., don your cape at the Super-
hero Night on the Mirror Lake Express. Attendees and riders will be greeted by images of superheroes along the path. There will also be a few carnival games costing $1 to participate, with all proceeds going to The Open Door. The participants of the carnival games will be entered to win a prize. On Wednesday, July 4, from 5 until 7 p.m., Quantum Comics is co-hosting a Games in the Park event. There will be different board games that everyone will have access to and a door prize will be available to one lucky person. Attendees are once again asked to bring a food donation. This event will take place on the grass in front of the Bill Fowler Centre. Join the Chamber on a hunt around Camrose to Find the Infinity Stones on Thursday, July 5. Six different colored rocks will be located throughout the City for people to find. Participants who find the stones and then return them to the Bill Fowler Centre will be eligible to win a prize. Friday, July 6 is tentatively planned as Movie Night, starting at 5:30 p.m., featuring The Avengers movie at the Moose Hall. Help out the community by bringing a food donation. Once again, there will be door prizes.
Camrose also has plenty of beautiful parks, playgrounds and miles of walking trails where you can enjoy natural surroundings. Historical Main Street features unique shopping and dining opportunities. Consider taking in one of the many activities hosted throughout the City, including the annual Camrose Artwalk and sporting events. Or, take in a swim at the Aquatic Centre. Local attractions such as the Camrose and District Centennial Museum and the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park will have you embark on a journey through time and history. The Camrose Public Library is a hub of activity, but also offers a quiet, safe place to sit in the sunshine and catch up on some good reads or connect to the world wide web. There really is plenty to do right in Camrose, so go ahead and be a tourist in your own town. Carson Muise
Carson Muise of Camrose enjoys getting on a steer and going for a ride. He hopes it carries him into a career on the rodeo circuit. The 15-year-old Grade 9 École Camrose Composite High School student comes from a background of rodeo competitors. “I started steer riding because my family has always been in rodeo and I thought it would be a cool experience to try it out,” said Carson. “This is my last year of steer riding and next year I am planning to move up to junior bull riding. After two years of junior bulls, I will be old enough for the big bulls.” That won’t stop Carson from entering major events this summer. “This year, I will be going to the Calgary Stampede as well as several rodeos in central and northern Alberta. I enter pretty much two rodeos every weekend until the rodeo finals in the fall.” In July, he will be riding novice steers at the Calgary Stampede in the A division. Carson started at the Johansen Brothers Steer Riding School in Olds at 13, in 2017. He rode his first year in the Central Alberta Rodeo Association placing sixth overall. Carson enrolled in the Johansen Steer Riding School again this spring and won the Most Improved Award from the Johansen brothers. Currently, he is sitting fourth in the Lakeland Rodeo Association and third in the Wildrose Rodeo Association with a summer full of rodeos ahead. Carson’s grandfather, Gil Bowe, (deceased), was the world record holder in saddle bronc riding for over a decade and is currently in the BC Sports Hall of Fame for rodeo achievements. His uncle was a pro bull rider and his mother was a competitive team roper for several years. When not entering a rodeo, Carson enjoys playing guitar, snowboarding and mechanics.

One of the top Canadian rock and roll bands from the ‘70s and ‘80s will be playing in Sedgewick on Sunday, July 15. The music evening begins with Sweet Tequila playing prior to Trooper opening their set. Sweet Tequila will be playing in Calgary from July 2 to 11 during the Stampede prior to visiting Sedgewick. Sweet Tequila continues to write new original music and plans are in the works to start recording a full-length album in the near future. As for Trooper, they need little introduction. In 2012, Trooper songwriters Ra McGuire and Brian Smith were awarded SOCAN’s prestigious National Achievement Award to acknowledge their significant and lasting contribution to Canada’s songwriting legacy. “We’re Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time)”, “Raise a Little Hell”, “The Boys in the Bright White Sportscar”, “Two For the Show” and “Pretty Lady” have stood the test of time and are Canadian classics. Since it came out in 1979, Trooper’s Hot Shots has been one of the biggestselling albums in Canadian music history. It has gone six times platinum, and sells consistently, as do tickets to current Trooper shows.

reward will be admission by donation. Travis is a young artist with a love for performing. He grew up on a farm near Hay Lakes and was immersed in music early on with the family band, The Polka Ramblers. By age 12, he was playing guitar and singing in the band, making the stage his own and bringing a new dynamic to the show. He has performed many solo shows and has also joined other groups like the Bailey Buckaroos for special events. Travis enjoys a variety of music such as Buddy Holly,
Dierks Bentley and Kenny Chesney. He is 18 years old and enrolled in the fine arts program at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus. In May 2017, he started writing songs and is looking to pursue a career in the country music industry. Then on July 12, you can enjoy the movie Moulin Rouge at 7:30 p.m. Jessica Dostie will be providing the music in the bistro on July 19 beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Lego Batman Movie will air on Thursday, July 26 at 7:30 p.m.

To say Michael Harrison is in a groove on the golf course, is an understatement. Harrison captured his third straight junior golf championship in a row. The Derrick Golf and Winter Club in Edmonton hosted the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour for competitive players, where the facility held more than 120 youth. In the MJT Ford Series, over 80 golfers were competing for titles in seven different age categories, as well as the chance to qualify for the International Players Championship presented by Miura Golf in Jasper this August, or for MJT Team Canada to the Nordic Team Matches in Estonia this September. Michael Harrison, 23, of Camrose won the Hoselton trophy for MJT Collegiate Boys 19 to 23 with an impressive two-day total of

A Bawlf runner rounds the bases after hitting a ball hard against Camrose at Kin Park. A Wetaskiwin hitter reaches first before the throw to be safe on this play in U10 tournament playoffs. A pre-game meeting with the coach settles the debate of what player is playing which position. A pick off move by the boys’ bantam team is a tad late. Yoga class to help animal shelter, cats By Murray Green
A by-donation yoga class will be held at Sacred Arts Yoga Studio to raise funds for the Camrose and Area Animal Shelter Society. The class will be held on July 7 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Funds will be collected and donated to the shelter to assist rescued cats find homes. The shelter is hoping to expand to assist multispecies within their facility. The yoga class will be led by Chrissy Skerritt at Sacred Arts at 500650 Street. Phone 780-6782538 for more information. The animal society began with the goal of opening a shelter for lost and homeless pets in the Camrose area. It began by raising funds for, the awareness of and the need for an animal shelter in Camrose.
After presenting information to the City council regarding the stray cat population and the issues this raised within the City, they helped the shelter get started. The shelter moved to its current location on Nov. 1, 2017. Since January, the shelter has taken in 104 strays and/or homeless cats. They have been vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchipped prior to adopting them out. The shelter has adopted out 28 cats and transferred 59 more to partner rescues for adoption. They hope to add community outreach programs, such as low cost spay/neuter/microchip initiatives. These will contribute to reducing reproduction, increasing the number of strays being returned to their owners and, in turn, controlling the stray population.

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded grants to the Camrose Boys and Girls Club. One grant is from income from the Camrose Boys and Girls Club Fund, established to support operations of the Club. The other, from the Janis Jesswein Legacy Fund, the Dennis and Doris Ofrim Fund, the Beverly Pearson Penner and Don Penner Fund and the Foundation’s Community Funds, is for assistance with the cost of staff training and the Kid Way, Youth Mentoring and Keystone programs. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects and facilities, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. The automotive section of
Impala convertible was made to run on highways By Murray Green
Merlin Buskas enjoys cruising with his 1968 Chevrolet Impala convertible with a big block 396 motor in it. The Ferintosh area resident likes taking the top down and taking in the sunshine. “I purchased it six years ago, coming up at the end of July. I bought it from Jim Voss, who is about 12 miles east of Camrose,” shared Merlin. “He did a total body off restoration on it back in 1997, before I bought it.” The Chevrolet Impala (fourth generation) are fullsize automobiles produced by Chevrolet for the 1958 through 1970 model years. The 1965 Impala was all new, while the 1967 and 1969 models featured new bodies on the same redesigned perimeter frame introduced on the 1965 models. “It was all restored, so I didn’t have to do much to it. I did some work on the motor this past winter. The cam shaft went and I rebuilt that and put it back together again,” Merlin said. All Impalas of this generation received annual facelifts as well, distinguishing each model year. Throughout the early 1960s, Chevrolet’s basic body designs became increasingly subtle, while the bright trim that was part of the Impala package added more than a touch of luxury to the look. The same pattern was followed in the interiors, where the best materials and equipment Chevrolet had to offer were displayed. In short, the Impala was on its way to becoming a kind of juniorgrade Cadillac, which, for both the company and its customers, was just fine. “I have always been a lover of Chevrolet Impala’s, especially the ‘50s and ‘60s. The convertible was a nice bonus.” The 1968 model’s front end received a facelift similar to the 1965 model, while rear bumpers held triple horseshoe shaped taillights. The formal Custom Coupe, previously a Caprice exclusive, became available as an Impala. Most Chevrolets have hidden windshield wipers. Plush new interiors also helped attract buyers. “It came with a 396 motor. I would have been

happy with a smaller (250 or 307) or a 327, but I had an appraisal done last summer and found out that with the bigger motor, it boosted the value of it a bit more,” explained Merlin. “That was a nice bonus.” Impala overwhelmed the sales charts, as it had for years. Full-sized cars could have a 250 cubic-inch six, a 307 cubic-inch V-8, either of a pair of 327s of 250 or 275 horsepower, or a 325-horsepower 396 cubicinch V-8. Topping the list was the big 427, rated at 385 or 425 horsepower. The two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission was still available with the 250 six-cylinder and 307 or 327 V-8s, but the three-speed Turbo Hydramatic could be ordered with all V-8 engines on the Impala Sport Sedan and Custom coupe. Astro Ventilation was an option for the Custom Coupe that included fresh-air vents, the same units that were used for the optional air con-
ditioning, sans the centre upper vent. Cars equipped with this option got fulllength door glass minus the vent windows. “As far as I know, the only thing that changed was the Corvette wheels. It is the only thing that isn’t stock that I can see,” said Merlin. In keeping with federal regulations, safety features were built into Impalas during the 1967 and 1968 model years, including a fully collapsible energy-absorbing steering column, side marker lights, and shoulder belts for closed models. Only about 400 Super Sports had a six-cylinder engine from 1967 to 1968, 390 hp (291 kW; 395 PS) in 1969, or L72 (425 hp (317 kW; 431 PS)) from 1968 to 1969. Special SS427 badging, inside and out, was the rule, but few were sold, since muscle car enthusiasts were seeking big-block intermediates, such as the Chevelle SS396 and Plymouth Road Runner.
In 1968 as Caprice sales escalated, those of the Impala Super Sport suffered a decline. Much of this drop in sales was no doubt due to the availability of big-block
engines in the mid-sized (and lighter) Chevelle, and even Novas could be specialordered with the 396 engine with the new-for-1968 body style.

Storm clouds ahead for westerners
Diamond action at Kin Park
By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the $4.5 billion Trans Mountain buyout and the dark clouds hovering over the federal government from that transaction. From the misuse of taxpayers’ dollars to the lack of consultations with indigenous people to the environmentalists’ protests, the sun certainly wasn’t shining for Prime Minister Trudeau as Kinder Morgan packed up to leave this country. Storm clouds are now brewing for the Liberal’s over their anything but transparent renewed provincial equalization formula and the intensifying trade war with the US. Just as the House of Commons was recessing for the summer on June 21, we learned that a five year equalization plan was snuck into the omnibus Budget Bill. There was no consultation, there was no debate, there wasn’t even a heads up and now, the provinces are saddled with a plan until 2024 in which Alberta, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland, and B.C. get nothing. It is pretty hard to tell out- of-work Alberta oil workers and towns that depend on the coal industry that we are a “have province” and therefore ineligible to receive equalization payments. Even harder yet, tell them while we get nothing, a province blocking the movement of our oil is getting $12 billion. Alberta United Conservative leader, Jason Kenney, was recently quoted as saying, “We will continue to be forced, even when times are bad, to subsidize public services in other parts of the country where politicians have been trying to block our pipelines and impair our energy industry.” Equalization payments have been around since Confederation when the federal government used their power to tax to transfer money to the provinces. In 1957, a formal system of transfer was established to help struggling Atlantic Provinces. The objective was to give the provinces, particularly those with low rates of economic growth, the same per capita revenues as the two wealthiest provinces; Ontario and B.C. Over the years, amendments have been made to the original formula and in 1982 the Constitution was amended to include “the rights of the poorer provinces to equalization.” In 2004, with agreement between the provincial and federal governments, there was a move away from the traditional formula to fixed funding. On the advice of an expert panel, the formula driven calculations were brought back in 2007. While there are many different points of view of how, if at all, the equalization payments should once again be changed, those opinions don’t matter. As far as the Liberal government is concerned, the debate was over before it ever began. We sincerely hope that the debate or at least some rational discussion is not over with the United States on the tariffs they are threatening to impose on automotive imports. TD Bank is warning that 160,000 jobs in Canada’s automotive sector could be at risk if this threat becomes a reality. This potentially amounts to the loss of one in five Canadian manufacturing. My Conservative colleagues and I are not going to just idly stand by to see how big this storm may get. We have launched the Defend our Local Jobs tour (www. defendlocaljobs.ca). We are going to talk with workers, businesses and local labour groups to determine how we can best respond to the US tariffs that are threatening our economy. We may not be able to prevent the storm, but at least we can try to mitigate the damage. Phyllis Marguerite Humeny (Dermott) February 7, 1935 ~ June 17, 2018 Phyllis passed away peacefully at home, with her daughter Kelly by her side. After saying a prayer to her late husband Bill on Father’s Day, Phyllis knew it was time to join him. Phyllis was not the type to sit back and miss out on the fun, even during her short battle with cancer. The legacy of Phyllis’ kind spirit, positive demeanor, passion for baking, love for her garden and zest for life will live on through her children Kelly, Shirley (Larry) and Tom (Deb); as well as her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Phyllis married William Andrew Humeny on September 3, 1955 in Saskatoon, SK. As a military family, they travelled the world, making memories and growing their family of five. After retirement, the happy couple settled in Camrose, AB, where they proudly built their dream home together. After losing her husband, Phyllis eventually settled in Calgary where she lived out the remainder of her life. Throughout those years, Phyllis enjoyed travelling to see friends and family to continue making lasting memories with loved ones. Phyllis cared for her family with all her heart, through her words, her love and her cookies. Phyllis’ positive approach to life allowed her to bring out the best in any situation and her smile warmed the hearts of those around her. Although her song has ended, her melody will live on.

Province gains knowledge of senior issues in Camrose By Murray Green
Alberta Seniors and Housing hosted it’s third Seniors Advisory Forum in Camrose on June 22 with Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA Bruce Hinkley addressing the forum on behalf of Minister of Seniors and Housing Lori Sigurdson. The province is looking at the success with senior issues in Camrose as a model for the rest of the Alberta. That is why a forum was brought to our city. “There is excellent work being done in this area (Camrose) and one example is the rural bus service that Dr. Jane Ross has been one of the organizers of–so well done. We recognize the value of transportation for seniors,” said deputy minister Kim Armstrong. “In the first two forums, you identified the issues within communities. We all seek to understand the needs and concerns of seniors so that policies and programs delivered through the Alberta Government are best served for all seniors.” The number of seniors is increasing as the baby boomers are moving towards retirement. “Camrose is the heart of central eastern Alberta with regard to seniors, MLA Bruce a centre for families and Hinkley especially for caregivers for seniors. It is interesting to note that Camrose has elected a senior as their mayor and a senior as their MLA. It is a very seniororientated city,” said MLA Hinkley at the Norsemen Inn. “I’m not here just to bring greetings. I’m going to stay for the full session because it is important. I’m eager to listen to what you have to say. Our government created the forums to seek input from seniors and to support seniors. We all know how important seniors are in vibrant communities in rural Alberta like Camrose,” said MLA Hinkley. “As a fun fact, 20 per cent of my constituents are seniors. I know the last time this forum convened, it addressed issues of age-friendly communities, ageism, aging workers and aging in the community. I hear how aging within your own community is so important for seniors. It means being able to stay at home close to family and friends. We want to support seniors to remain in their community and not to have to move to find support,” explained Hinkley. The first forum talked about age-friendly communities, ageism in seniors, caregiving support needs and healthy aging. The second one focused on ageism, affordable housing, community support and labour support with older workers. A fourth session is planned for this fall. “Our government is committed to supporting seniors in rural and remote communities. Our home adaptation and repair program is very popular with seniors across the province. We help rural seniors plan for transportation.” The issue of elder abuse is also being addressed. “Right now, the senior housing is meeting the needs of people here. The question is, as our population continues to age, will it be okay for the future?” asked Hinkley. “My suspicion is that we should take some foresight and have pre-planning to have these facilities available.” Rural Camrose County faces an even higher senior population in the future. “If anyone can handle that, it would be Camrose because they have a history of planning for seniors within the City and area. Camrose will need to plan for units as well,” added Hinkley. “Camrose is in a good place and that’s why it is popular with seniors. The one thing I have heard a lot about is that one member of a couple was living here and one over there. A lot of that has been resolved through renovations. Across the province, that is still an issue. Lots of seniors are concerned about future benefits. I admire Minister Sigurdson for acting on issues and not reacting to problems.” For more information on how to get support call these numbers: Alberta Supports Contact Centre at 1-877-6449992, Office of the Seniors Advocate at 1-844-644-0682, Dementia Advice Line at 811, Family Violence Info Line at 310-1818 and Protection for Persons in Care at 1-888357-9339.

They have rider packages with all the information needed to ride in this year’s ride. It will contain an entry form, pledge form and what will be provided to all the riders and horses as well as directions on how to get to the starting point.
“We have a goal of raising $30,000 this year because it is our 10th year for the ride. In the past nine years of this ride, we have raised $143,000 that has been donated to STARS,” said organizer Henry Thomas from Castor, who has helped with the last six rides. “I’m expecting about 130 riders, so it will be an impressive ride.” There is free camping for riders with water supplied the night before, the day of and morning after for the horses. Riders receive some water during the ride. “We will provide an amazing hot supper for riders and others can pur-

chase tickets that will be served at the end. We will also have a silent auction with donated items to bid on. Join us for a great trail ride and help us raise money for a great cause. There will be a couple of river crossings and great sights to see,” said Henry. He indicated that the BRRFS will be holding this year’s event in memory of STARS employee and volunteer Maureen Henkel and her husband Alfred, who both passed away during the past year. Fulfilling a dream with paws and tails By Lori Larsen
Imagine a furry, sweet tempered pup curling up beside you or at your feet, comforting you with no words, just their mere presence. For pet therapy dogs Booker and Dylan, relieving stress, calming fears or just lending an ear is a job they take very seriously, and for handler Karen Gibson, it’s her passion.
had classes and trained all obedience and tracking then came up with idea to train our German Shepherds as seeing eye dogs.” In preparation, the two got the breeding line, financing, building and interest from the public, but discovered they would have to train in California. Because they each had young families, it just was
he was so happy I came to see him (with Dylan),” said Karen, of one of her venue visits. “We spent probably 20 minutes not necessarily talking about or paying a lot of attention to the dog, but he ended up getting all of his hunting pictures and prizes out and looking through them with me.” On another occasion, while attending a venue,

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Karen Gibson gets down to Dylan and Booker’s (pet therapy) level for a heart to heart.
Born and raised in Ontario, Karen was around dogs since age two. “I remember going and picking up our first dog when I was two and from that day forward, we were buddies,” said Karen fondly. As she grew older, her love for dogs also grew and she recalls meeting a young lady in a local coffee shop near her family home who tweaked her interest even further by suggesting Karen speak to the woman’s father, a dog shower, breeder and trainer. “I went there and decided, at the age of 14, I was going to buy my first dog (rough Collie). I’ve shown dogs ever since.” After a not-so-successful first nine weeks of a 10-week obedience class with her first dog, Karen would go home after every class sobbing. But with encouragement from her instructor, she prevailed. “In the tenth week, that dog did everything I asked then I started showing him in Obedience and I was hooked.” Eventually, Karen moved to Alberta where she taught advanced studies to preschoolers and began using her dogs (German Shepherds) and cats (which she also showed) in the classroom. “I saw what a difference it made with some of the children and started thinking I should use this more,” she remembers, adding it was what put the sparkle in her eye. To begin with, Karen along with a friend started a canine academy using German Shepherds. “We
not feasible. So Karen concentrated on showing dogs instead, but something deep inside her longed for more. After hearing about pet therapy at one of the show circuits, she began researching how she could get involved. She eventually became certified with dog Booker as a pet therapy team. Knowing in her heart this was something she was meant to do, Karen began knocking on doors and getting into venues in and around Camrose. “I looked around and thought there is so much need here. People, children are crying for this.” Dedicated to making people’s lives better, Karen secured 24 venues that her and her pet therapy dog Booker visited (voluntarily) on a regular basis (which has since been reduced to 16 due to travelling). Some of the regular venues include numerous Bethany Group facilities in Camrose, Rosehaven, Augustana, Viewpoint Designated Supportive Living, Alberta Health Services, Camrose Public Library (Reading Tails), elementary school visits, Tofield Sunshine Villa and Tofield Health Centre, not to mention seasonal events. Karen’s love for what she does is so apparent when you watch her handle her dogs Booker and now Dylan (Booker’s son). She speaks softly yet firmly and gently directs them to their posts, where the magic takes over. “One gentleman told me
one of the residents told Karen how happy she was that Karen and the dogs had come, noting she rarely received any visitors and just wanted someone to talk to. “The dogs are a way in,” said Karen. “All of a sudden, a person will just light up. They have that breakthrough.” Karen has also done demonstrations with her dogs, but her fervor is in pet therapy and she hopes to expand the service to include courts, more school visits, hospitals, more residences, rehabilitation and working with autistic children. Recently Karen signed on with St. John Ambulance Pet Therapy program and now works both Booker and Dylan, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Under St. John Ambulance umbrella, she is assisting in recruiting more pet therapy teams (dog and handler) to cover Camrose and area. “This is my passion, but I am 75 and won’t be able to do this much longer. I want to see a viable unit here in Camrose that will reach out to Camrose and area.” Karen admits at first she wasn’t really looking for this type of a commitment, she just wanted to spend time with her dogs, demonstrating their amazing ability to follow her bidding. But once she realized the impact petting and loving a dog has with these people, not to mention her own presence, she just couldn’t turn away. “It touched me to the bottom of my soul.”

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
HELP WANTED EXPERIENCED COOKS WANTED – Must have food handling course. And PARTTIME WAITRESSES. Email resumé to kerkeo@gmail.com or phone Round Hill Pub & Eatery, 780-673-3457, ask for Kerrie.
EMPLOYMENT WANTED 2ND BEST PAINTER IN TOWN – 30 years’ experience for all your painting needs. Call Rick the Painter, 780-672-0391.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Mental health relations Submitted
A child’s foundation for good mental health is built early in life through his experiences, including his relationships with his parents, family, caregivers, teachers and other children. These relationships are essential to his development and help him build resiliency—the ability to bounce back from setbacks and cope with life’s ups and downs. Resiliency is built by certain skills such as problem solving, empathy and emotional regulation, which is the ability to show emotions in ways that won’t hurt oneself or others. A child with resiliency is able to react confidently, positively and adapt well to change when he hits bumps and potholes on the road of life. Resilience is also a buffer against the harmful effects of adverse childhood experiences. “Our mental health depends on our relationships with other people from the very beginning,” said Dr. Carole-Anne Hapchyn, an infant psychiatrist in Edmonton and a clinical professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the University of Alberta. “When you are resilient, you’ve got more in the bank to cope,” she said. It’s like a scale, with the positive things in a child’s life going to one side of the scale and the negative going to the other side. Resilience is the movable tipping point that gives a child the ability to have positive experiences outweigh the negative. One of the best ways to build up the positive side of the scale is through serve and return interactions. The key to this back-andforth communication is watching for and responding to children’s cues, Hapchyn says. “Be sensitive and observant to what children are trying to tell you.” Serve and return helps build a strong relationship between an adult and child, creating an emotional bond that gives that child the strength, trust and security he needs. …MORE LISTINGS FOR CENTRAL AGENCIES
By Lori Larsen
In today’s world of technology, where virtually any type of sales business can be done with a click on a cellular phone, visiting customers face to face may be a rarity, but for William Gardner, it is like visiting old friends. Based out of Calgary, William (Bill) has been making sales calls to Camrose and other communities all over Alberta since 1960, representing Wm. Gardner Manufacturer Agencies in fabric sales. “My grandfather was from Boston where there was a big contact of woolen mills and my wife’s grandfather was a textile agent over in Saskatchewan.” William followed in family footsteps and became a textile sales agent. “I began with general sewing fabrics (woolens) in 1960. Back then, ladies used to wear spring, winter and fall coats and made summer party dresses,” recalled William. His business serviced fabric and department stores and manufacturers. During William’s sales visits to Camrose, he called upon several businesses including Fortune and McKenzie’s, Lawrence’s Department Store, Brodie’s, Meraw’s Five to a Dollar store and Van Carr Fabrics. “When I first started, it was more basic cottons

including ginghams and flannels, utility type fabrics. Then in the middle ‘60s, knits such as Crimplene were a big hit.” William noted that today’s generations don’t do as much home sewing out of necessity anymore and more garments are being mass produced and imported. “Quilting, now has become a very creative hobby craft. We are noticing a lot of the younger and professional women looking for something therapeutic as a way to exercise their creativity.” Albeit only one customer in Camrose now, Quilting From the Heart, William and his son William, who joined the business in 1981, still make those all too important door-to-door sales calls. “It’s a way to make a living of course,” smiled William when asked why
it was important to still travel to all of his customers. “It has treated us well. But there is also something to be said about face-toface meetings as opposed to online and via computer. Personal contact and actually being able to feel and see the new products. That way, clients are able to see the quality and true colours.” Because most of the quilting and fabric stores are still independently owned and operated, the market is there for William and son to continue servicing that need and at 82, William Sr. plans on continuing going door-to-door, store-to-store toting along a wide range of quilting swatches for customers to look over. “They are all just nice folks,” concluded William. “They are really friends, not just customers.”
