Letters to the Editor Humbly yours...

I’ve just finished reading bios of four men who in June were inducted into Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame, which “commemorates and honours those whose accomplishments in aviation and aerospace have contributed so much to Canada’s development as a nation.” I wondered how the inductees could pack so much into one lifetime. They included…Co-founder of STARS air ambulance and professor emeritus of emergency medicine; Former test pilot who became project lead for developing the International Space Station robotic arm (Canadarm) and an innovator in electronic and other aviation products; Former Chief of Canadian Defence staff who went on to be CEO of a major aviation company; Co-founder of Canadian Owners and Pilots Association and several other aviation-related initiatives including the use of civilian pilots for search and rescue. All four have been leaders and pathfinders. And, according to people who know these high achievers, all of them are humble. I flashed back to a different induction ceremony I attended several years ago– induction into the Alberta Order of Excellence. The nine inductees were men and women living in Alberta who have “made a difference by serving Albertans with excellence and distinction.” All the inductees had contributed hugely in many different fields–education, the arts, science, medicine, community…Again, a stunning group, leaders in their fields, their organizations and communities. And again, based on their acceptance comments, nearly all of them humble, more interested in service than in personal glory. That takes me to an article headline that caught my attention: “A growing body of research suggests the more arrogant the leader the less powerful,” by Olivia Goldhill. “Powerful leadership has long been associated with a certain brash authority, a self-confident swagger,” Goldhill said, “But that image of the arrogant alpha male as the ultimate powerful leader doesn’t hold up to psychological scrutiny.” Turns out a growing body of research says humble people make more effective leaders. One study, published in Personality and Individual Differences, showed that those who acknowledged that they weren’t always right and would change their minds if presented with new evidence performed better than those who insisted they were nearly always right. The humble participants did better on new tasks. The arrogant participants were far more confident that their wrong judgments were correct. Goldhill goes on to say that one reason for the weak performance of arrogant leaders is the “Dunning-Kruger Effect.” What’s that? I’d never heard of it, so I looked it up. Dunning and Kruger are two psychologists who conducted studies showing that people who were less competent often over-estimated their ability, while people who were more competent often under-estimated their ability. Since the original study in 1999, Dunning and Kruger and other researchers have conducted other studies, and found similar results. Less competent people who are arrogant tend to over-estimate their competence. More competent people tend to assume others can do things as well as them, and they under-estimate their own abilities. Less competent but arrogant people stand firm in their wrong beliefs, while more competent humble people are more likely to question themselves and want to learn more. Meanwhile, a study of 105 CEOs published in Journal of Management in 2015 showed that humble leaders had a lower employee turnover, greater staff satisfaction, and stronger company performance. That scares me. Some of our most powerful political leaders appear to be too stupid to know they are ignorant and so arrogant that they believe they know what they’re doing. They are not teachable; they don’t believe they have anything to learn. And they have the power to do incredible long-term damage. Like the inductees I described at the beginning–the true leaders, the true difference-makers, are humble. Lucky us, to have them in our midst. Discerning us, to tell the difference between bluster and true wisdom.

Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Kevin Sorenson, you have some nerve. I read your recent report. Just another list of complaints. I don’t like the Liberals, but at least I have to give them credit for trying. The respected National Post journalist Andrew Coyne summed up the 10 years of the Harper Conservative government that you were part of as “attempted little, achieved less.”

So you complain about the Liberals’ attempts with Trans Mountain. Fine. What did you do when you were in government? Ten years you were part of the Harper government and not one pipeline built in Canada during that time. So you and Jason Kenney don’t like the federal/ provincial equalization formula? Fine. It’s the same one you used when you were in government. If it is so bad why didn’t you change it? You had 10 years. So you have discovered that Trump’s trade war is going to create hardships for Canadian workers. And what are you going to do about it? You claim you won’t sit idly by. You claim you will talk to workers. Oh wow. Kevin, we the citizens of Battle River/Crowfoot pay you well. You fly around the country and eat in fancy restaurants at our

expense. We have a right to expect you to work for us. You have an obligation to do more than just complain. When are you going to do something positive? I have urged you several times to work to bring us a national pharmacare program. You know we have the second highest drug prices in the world. I’m sure you know that Canadians pay more for prescription medications than the salaries of all of Canada’s doctors. A national pharmacare program would make medications affordable and save the country billions of dollars. All developed countries except Canada and the U.S. have a national pharmacare program. Its morally and economically the right thing for Canada. You know that. Why are you silent on the subject? Rob Hill, Camrose

Camrose welcomes back the Canadian Forces Snowbirds By Lori Larsen

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds will be taking over the Camrose skies on July 18 during an aerial display and performance. The Snowbirds will be treating Camrose and area residents to a stunning aerial event showcasing the agility, talent, speed and grace of the eleven CT-114 Tutor jet pilots. The aerial show will take place Wednesday, July 18 at 7 p.m. On Tuesday, July 17 at 7 p.m. bring the whole family out and enjoy the Snowbirds Maple Spilt Ice Cream Social at the Camrose Airport Hangar 14. Tickets for this event can be purchased at OleO’s Ice Cream Castle and are on a first come first serve basis. This is a great opportunity for people of all ages to meet with and share photo opportunities, get autographs and mingle with the Snowbirds pilots and crew. Gates at the Camrose Airport for the aerial show on Wednesday, July 18, will open at 4:30 p.m. with food trucks and activities on site from 4:30 until 7 p.m. Then the jets take to the sky in a performance sure to be remembered for years to come. Autographs will follow shortly after the performance at the Camrose Airport terminal building. Admission to the show is free, however, there is a fee for parking. Parking will be available at the airport. By prepaying at (www.snowbirdsovercamrose.ca/) you can enjoy the pre-paid express lanes to access the airport via 47 Street or pay at the gate (cash only). You can save yourself the worry of getting a parking spot by taking advantage of the free Park and Ride offered from the Camrose Recreation Centre, ride your bike and use the complimentary Bike Valet courtesy of the Camrose Sea Serpents Swim Club or just walk in. Events and appearances are subject to weather

Captain Taylor Evans, Snowbird 9

and aircraft serviceability and may change without notice. Flying high

Imagine the thrill of being upside down in a jet, flying in formation wing tip to wing tip with other jets or simply soaring among the clouds. Captain Taylor Evans, Snowbird 9, gets to live the dream of flying with the elite Canadian Forces Snowbirds. “I have been in the regular Air Force for 14 years now,” said Captain Evans. “Prior to that I was in the air cadet program where I earned my glider and private pilot licences.” Evans joined the military directly after graduating from high school, gaining much of his flying experience on the F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet prior to joining the Snowbirds. “This is my first season with the air show team. I’ve been on the squadron for a year now. Most pilots will spend two years on the air show team.” Evans fondly remembers being bitten by the “desire to fly” bug back when he was a young child. “I remember when I was growing up going to the Airshow in Springbank, close to where I grew up and watching the Snowbirds. I thought it was the

coolest thing ever. That sparked my interest in flying so this is definitely a dream come true.” The Snowbird pilots come from a variety of military flying background including helicopter, flight instructor or, as in Evans case the F18. He noted that generally Snowbird pilots must have at least 500 hours on injection seats. “Pilots will get that time by flying F18s or instructing on the Tutor or Hawk here in Moose Jaw.” Once a pilot has the requirements they express their interest in becoming a Snowbird pilot and begin the semi-formal application process with a written letter. “All applications come to the squadron where the current team will review them and pick the applicants based partly on reputation and how they feel they would fit in with the team. Usually six to eight candidates are selected to come to the squadron and fly a two week tryout.” Evans explained the candidates are put through a fairly stringent process of flying in formation in the CT-114 Tutor jets. “No one flies in the Tutor these days except the snowbirds. Candidates have to be able to fly a brand new airplane maneuvering in formation, which is something not LIVING MUSEUM Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster École Sifton School Grade 5 class participated in a day featuring some of Canada’s history during the Live Museum of Canada History event on June 22. Students were tasked with preparing a presentation on a particular culture that had an impact on Canadian history. Left photo: Students, left to right, Isabella Pilon, Evan Schwartz and Lincoln Kosingksi demonstrate the North-West Mounted Police. everyone is used to. Then after that two weeks they are selected and away they go.” Despite his previous experience flying an F18, Evans said flying as a Snowbird pilot has its own set of challenges and physical demands. “When we are flying in formation it is minute control inputs that have to be very smooth and careful. We are constantly putting pressure on the stick so the muscles in our arm need to be tense all the time we are flying. It is definitely a workout.” The formations and maneuvers these talented pilots conduct are nothing short of an aerobatic miracle. Evans explained that an air show is broken down into three segments that include the opener, integrated middle and closer. During the opener and closer all nine aircraft are flying formations together. “The integrated, or middle of the show, is split into groups of two, four or seven planes,” said Evans noting that each segment has its own share of tricky and fun maneuvers. “During the integrated I fly the opposing solo, with Number 8 as the head solo. We do the head to head crosses, where we point and fly at each other at 300 knots a piece (600 knots at closure) and do a maneuver which is supposed to get everybody’s heart rate up and get everybody excited. “The trickiest part for me when we do the head on crosses is to make it look like we are going to actually hit.” Anyone on the ground watching those maneuvers will attest to the pilots accuracy based on hearing the unified gasp from the crowd. The most fun maneuver for Evans is the Mirror Roll, where he and another pilot roll over canopy to canopy. As for danger, Evans admits that every aspect of an air show comes with degrees of danger. “We train a lot to mitigate any unnecessary risks and

train for every emergency scenario. Every briefing we have we go through two different emergency scenarios and take them through to logical conclusions.” He added that everybody, including all coordinators, ground safety pilots, announcing crew and emergency services crew are prepared and trained in the event of an emergency. “Our first priority is to make sure the crowd is safe.” Evans said that trust is the number one attribute in the relationship between the pilots. “We all get along and hang out together outside the flying job. That helps build the team work, which is so important.” He said that if you don’t trust the person flying right next to you it creates a barrier, which could not only be a conflict, but dangerous. “The motto of the Snowbirds is skill, professionalism and teamwork and that is what we try to portray. Teamwork is very important in all areas of the Canadian Forces.” It is apparent that Captain Evans loves his post with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and even though flying the formations takes a great deal of focus he admits every once in a while during a calmer time in the show he can’t help thinking how cool it is to look over and see eight other airplanes all six feet away from each other. “It is a fun job and I can’t believe we get paid to do it. As pilots we are just renting the red flight suit. It is an honour to be on the team and be able to represent Canada and the rest of the Canadian Forces as a whole.” To view the Snowbirds air show schedule visit the website at www.rcaf-arc. forces.gc.ca/en/snowbirds/ index.page or on the Facebook page CF Snowbirds/ Snowbirds des FC. “We are very excited to be coming back to Alberta and starting our Alberta 2018 shows in Camrose.”

Semi-truck swerving July 6

A female contacted Camrose Police after she returned home and found the lock on her gate had been cut and flowers and toys were thrown throughout the yard. It did not

appear that anything had been stolen. Police responded to a complaint of a domestic dispute in the southside trailer park. A male and female were involved in a

verbal argument and were separated for the evening. July 5

Police received a complaint of a semi-truck which was swerving all over the road west of Camrose. The complainant captured the

driving pattern on his dash cam. Police located the vehicle and the 49-year-old driver was issued a ticket for failing to drive in the centre of his lane. A 2006 red Western Star semi-truck and trailer

were stolen from the east end industrial area. Video surveillance shows two male suspects stealing the vehicle on July 1 at 2 p.m. Police are investigating.

CONSERVE WATER

…USE A RAIN BARREL Instead of letting rain water run off into the storm drain, why not harness it to save money on your water bill? Investing in a rain barrel can save you money by storing rainwater that you can later use for watering and gardening. Not only does it save up to 250L of water per rainfall, but rain water is much better for your plants.

Don’t flush money down the drain By Lori Larsen

In an effort to conserve Camrose’s water supply, save residents money on utility costs and offer employment to people who may otherwise experience barriers to getting work, Newo Global Energy, in partnership with the Camrose Refugee Coordinating Committee (CRCC) and Blue Dot Camrose, has piloted a toilet retrofit program in Camrose. “Essentially Newo grew out of Blue Dot Camrose and Spirit of the Land as a practical way our community could put ecological stewardship into practice,” explained Newo founder and president Rajan Rathnavalu. The program was initiated by brothers Sebastien and Phil Rioux as a result of a Spirit of the Land

class taught by Rathnavalu at University of Alberta Augustana Campus. “It changed our values and vision on where we wanted to go in business,” said Sebastien, noting the original idea came out of an existing program being used in Toronto where the water savings to the City of Toronto was upwards of six billion litres of water in the past two years. Phil said, “Business is the way forward and our generation is told we are the ones who need to save the planet. This is a way we can do business and help the planet as well.” An added goal of the program is to create transitional employment for people who may find barriers in returning to work and or becoming an employable worker.

“We hope to have people come to our company as non-employable and leave here as employees, part of the workforce of Camrose and Canada,” said Rathnavalu. “It is kind of a triple win.” During a City of Camrose committee of whole meeting, Raj, Sebastien and Phil presented the idea to City council, suggesting the City consider supporting the initiative throughout Camrose by supplying the retrofit toilets to residents. “It is highly cost effective,” said Rathnavalu. “The payback rates are between two to five years depending on the builds. In terms of an investment, it is a very simple investment from a purely economic view.” Continued on page 16

Museum welcomes youth to enjoy the past By Lori Larsen

Keeping history alive for the younger residents of Camrose is a passion of the Camrose and District Centennial Museum staff and volunteers. “It is important to know about the place in which you live to gain a better appreciation of your hometown,” said Camrose and District Centen-

nial Museum coordinator Dariya Veenstra. In an effort to offer children and youth of Camrose and area an opportunity to see for themselves what history has to teach, the museum is hosting a Museum Children’s Program from July 25 to 27 from 1 until 3 p.m. “History won’t be preserved if the younger generation doesn’t take an

interest,” said museum summer student Stephanie Olson. “By learning about the past, children can come to appreciate and understand how different things were in the past and perhaps spark some curiosity” added museum summer student Jayda Calon. Children will learn about local history while

enjoying snacks and working on some crafts. The program is recommended for children ages five and up. “Join us for three fun filled afternoons of children’s crafts and activities,” invited Veenstra. For more information visit the museum at 5422-53 Street or telephone 780-672-3298.

MUSEUM SCHOOL TOUR Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Students of Bawlf School are transported back in history as they take in all the exhibits at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum. Grade 1 student Kynlee Larson, front is shown a beautiful Japanese fan by museum summer student Jayda Calon. Museum staff and volunteers are happy to share their love of history with younger generations.

Rathnavalu said. “We are proposing the pay as you save model on bill financing. The municipality will provide up-front financing and that payment would be paid back through the savings on that person’s water bill.” He further explained, “The return is practically guaranteed. People pay their utility bill every month and they will get savings of which only a portion will be paid back to the municipality every month.” Rathnavalu said the company (Newo) is currently working with City administration to determine the feasibility of the initiative and, for now, the project will pilot with some local property owners in Camrose as test subjects. The Camrose Refugee Coordinating Committee selected Camrose refugees to participate in the project. Councillor Wayne Throndson inquired as to whom the potential market would be for the project, bearing in mind the City has implemented a lowflow toilet program in the past. “Our target audience is every toilet in the City of Camrose,” answered Rathnavalu. “This would be our pilot (in Camrose), then we would move on to the rest of the province. At this point, the overall City plan still needs to be presented and then passed by council. “We’re still a ways away from implementing the full scope of the project,” said Rathnavalu. “That said, we have already received positive inquiries from Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary to follow our example.” For more information on the project, visit www. newo.energy/water.

Schultz earns Trudeau scholarship By Murray Green

Will Schultz received a prestigious Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship. The doctoral scholarship is one of the largest and most prestigious scholarships in the country. Prison research has been badly neglected. Widespread calls for new qualitative prison research of any form have gone largely unanswered in either Canada or the United States. That’s were Will comes in. He wants to make a difference. As a result, the institutional structures of corrections in this country have not been informed by relevant academic research, and are therefore ossified, outdated and inflexible. Furthermore, overwhelmed policy makers and correctional administrators do not have the tools to address skyrocketing drug mortality rates; nor do they have the necessary information to craft new ones. Will proposed research begins to address this research and policy gap by asking three questions. How has fentanyl impacted policy responses to security concerns in Canadian prisons, and how does this evolution impact prisoners? What are the impacts of lethal or nearlethal drug overdoses on officer and prisoner perceptions of safety or vulnerability within the prison? How has the threat posed by fentanyl changed the prison subculture and how prisoners relate to each other? Schultz, who is formerly of the Hay Lakes area and still attends church

services at the Kingman Baptist Church where his father Richard is the pastor, is in the department of sociology at the University of Alberta. “I had and have a lot of roots in Camrose. I was part of the home school group (I even did an open studies history course at Augustana during my Grade 12 year and loved it), played soccer and was part of Scouts (both in Camrose and Hay Lakes). These influences played a big role in shaping who I am, and strongly imprinted the importance of community involvement onto me. For instance, I have helped referee soccer at Camrose tournaments like Under the Lights for nearly a decade now and also spend several weeks each summer helping out at Pioneer Ranch Camp,” shared Will. During his undergraduate degree (he went to Prairie Bible Institute 2008-09, Lethbridge College 2009-11 and Mount Royal University 2011-13), he got a casual job with Alberta Corrections as a correctional peace officer. “I worked as an officer for five years, but became frustrated and cynical with how broken the justice system is. I constantly saw the same people coming back to jail and, despite our best efforts, none of the resources we provided seemed to help, even a little bit,” explained Will. “In 2015, I decided to go to the University of Alberta to pursue a master’s degree, with a vague hope of trying to find solutions for the problems I

saw. Through a combination of luck, fortuitous contacts and good timing, my supervisors (Drs. Sandra Bucerius and Kevin Haggerty) and I were able to get access to four prisons in Western Canada, and have (to date) conducted over 600 interviews with prisoners and 120 correctional officers. We are currently in the process of analyzing this data, and hope to use our findings to develop best practices for a number of issues within prison and within the community,” shared Will. “My life experience and research data form the backbone of my Ph.D. project. Specifically, I am looking at how opioids like Fentanyl are impacting how prisoners live and how correctional officers do their job within the prison setting. The opioid crisis is a serious concern across Canada, and the problems we see in the community are exacerbated and intensified within the prison setting.” He used the data and life experience to apply for three major scholarships last fall and received all three. The Pierre Elliott Trudeau scholarship had more than 280 students apply and only 15 were selected. The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is also extremely prestigious. Out of the 55 successful applications from across Canada Will ranked second. He also received a Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship, but did not accept this as it conflicted with the Vanier.

Will Schultz

“My research was important in helping me gain these awards, but my extensive community involvement and volunteering commitments were the factors which helped set me apart from other applicants,” revealed Will. “My small-town upbringing has proven to be a really important factor in my academic success so far. I don’t have the same perspective on issues as academics from, say Montreal or Toronto, and my small-town, rural Alberta perspective has sparked many interesting conversations. The Trudeau Foundation doesn’t exactly have an abundance of rural Albertan home-schooled pastor’s kids, which means my perspective is really valuable in helping to challenge and shape larger discussions on national issues.” Ironically, he did meet two other Camrosians at a recent Trudeau foundation event in Newfoundland, both of whom are married

to current Trudeau scholars. “I still laugh when I stop and think about how rare it is to win both Trudeau and Vanier in one year, because I honestly feel more comfortable on a soccer pitch or driving a tractor than I do presenting my research to worldrenown scholars. That said, sometimes God has a bigger plan than you’d expect. I love what I am doing, and I am absolutely thrilled about the opportunities I now have. I’m planning on using my funding to help expand my research. I will be travelling to academic conferences across North America and the world and I will also be travelling to different parts of Canada to conduct new research,” said Will. “Overall, I’m also really thankful to all the people in Camrose and area who, over the years, have invested time in me, and shown me what the real meaning of community is.”

Longtime Camrose resident’s triplet grandchildren graduate By Lori Larsen

In May 2000, Camrose resident Angie (Lang) Thirsk was delighted to hear about triplet grandchildren, Elizabeth, Emma and Joshua Lang born to parents Darlene FournierLang and James Lang. Fast forward 18 years later to 2018 and high school graduations in Edmonton and Devon, starring none other than the triplets, Elizabeth, Emma and Joshua. Emma and Joshua graduated this year from Blessed Oscar Romero High School in Edmonton while Elizabeth graduated from John Maland High School in Devon. “Emma and Joshua have both signed scholarships with Lakeland College in Lloydminster to play soccer and futsal,” said mother Darlene. “They will compete in Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference. Blessed Oscar Romero High School recently awarded Emma the MVP for soccer, MVP for basketball, Iron Raven

Award and Female Athlete of the Year and Joshua the MVP for soccer, MVP track and field, MVP for cross country and ranked provincially, MVP for volleyball. He was also given the Iron Raven Award plus Male Athlete of the Year for Blessed Oscar Romero High School.” Both Emma and Josh plan to further their studies in the field of education this fall at Lakeland College in Lloydminster.

“As for Elizabeth, she played hockey for the Northern Alberta X-Treme (NAX) female team which competes in the CSSHL. She finished sixth overall in the scoring standings this year. She earned a spot on Team Alberta this year and competed at the U18 nationals in Quebec City. Elizabeth has played coast to coast with NAX over the last three years including a Maritime tour of universities. She choose

a scholarship with the University of Calgary to play with the Dino’s starting in the fall and she will be pursuing science.” The triplets’ older sister Iva attends university in Edmonton and will be attending the national annual general meeting of St. Vincent De Paul Society in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Darlene, James and the triplets moved to Edmonton from Ontario in 2001

in order to be closer to the triplets’ grandmother in Camrose. James, son of Angie Lang-Thirsk (residing at Hillside Village) and Alphonse Lang (since passed away), graduated from Camrose Composite High School. The triplets’ uncle, Kevin Lang, works and lives in Camrose and Doug and wife Geraldine live in Daysland.

Hockey Alberta pulls plug on triple-A By Murray Green

Hockey Alberta has forced the Camrose Minor Hockey Association to shut down the triple-A Red Wings program on June 23. Local hockey supporters were disappointed that Camrose Minor Hockey Association didn’t have a say in the matter. Over the past two years, the Male Alberta Development Model (ADM) committee for Hockey Alberta has been undertaking a review of the elite (triple-A) draw zone structure across the province. A major focus of the review is the number of registered resident area players (by birth year) within each zone, ensuring the possibility of competitive balance within the ADM. A key principle of the ADM is that approximately five per cent of all registered male hockey players in Alberta should be playing at the triple-A level. Through its review, the ADM committee identified four draw zones that needed to be addressed. One of those was the Camrose zone, which is well below average in registered bantam and minor midget-aged players compared to the other draw zones. Over the past six months, the Male ADM committee reviewed data and statistics, collected feedback from MHAs, and evaluated different options for realigning MHAs within Camrose and neighbouring draw zones. However, the committee determined there are not enough registered players within any of the nearby communities and that shifting MHAs to align within the Camrose zone was not a viable option. Therefore, the following changes will be made for the 2018-19 season. The Camrose zone will be dissolved, removing both the minor midget and bantam triple-A team from the respective leagues. Bashaw MHA will be realigned under the Red Deer draw zone giving all Bashaw MHA resident players the ability to try out for the Red Deer teams. Battle River MHA, Camrose MHA, Holden MHA, Thunderstars MHA, Tofield MHA and Viking MHA will remain within the Sherwood Park zone, giving their respective resident players the ability to try out for the Sherwood Park teams. If you have any questions regarding these changes, email Hockey Alberta office info@hockeyalberta.ca.

The automotive section of

Meyer in a Chrysler New York state of mind By Murray Green

If you like style and Chryslers, you are in a New York state of mind. Elvin Meyer of Heisler might be a farm boy at heart, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t appreciate New York class. His restored 1961 Chrysler New Yorker has some class. “I always liked Chrysler cars. I drove a Dodge or Chrysler vehicle for quite a while and always enjoyed them. It seems they have a lot of parts around, so it makes it easier to keep them running,” said Elvin. The Chrysler New Yorker is an automobile model, which was produced from 1940 to 1996, serving for several years as the brand’s flagship model. “I went through the motor and changed the upholstery. I did everything I could to restore it to the way it was when it was new,” added Elvin. A trim level named the New York Special first appeared in 1938 and the New Yorker name debuted in 1939. Until its discontinuation in 1996, the New Yorker had made its mark as the longest-running American car nameplate. “I like the style of the Chrysler car because of the fins and things like that,” he shared. “The ‘50s and ‘60s car had more style. It has the spare tire storage in the back that is an attraction. The tire isn’t in there, it is actually underneath.” The New Yorker entered 1961 with a new grille, slanted headlights, a continental kit on the trunk lid. The 413 CID RB Golden Lion V-8 (6.8L in today’s standard) continued. This is the last of the Forward Look models. Chrysler built 2,541 New Yorker two-door hardtops this year, the last until 1964 in Canada and 1965 in the U.S. “I’ve got a 413 engine, which is the original motor. It is called a Golden Lion engine. It has a Golden Lion on the door and golden lines on the hub caps. It was near the top of the line. I imagine that a four door hard top would have been more. I have a flyer

NEW YORKER

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Whether Elvin Meyer’s 1961 Chrysler New Yorker parks on the streets of New York, Heisler or in Bashaw, it reflects class from a time period when automobiles were treasured with style and beauty.

still in the car that shows all of the models that came out in 1961.” The 413 RB had a 4.1875 in (106 mm) bore and was used from 1959-65 in cars. During that period, it powered all Chrysler New Yorker and Imperial models and was also available on the lesser Chryslers, as well as Dodge’s Polara and Monaco, and the Plymouth Fury as an alternative to the 383 cubic-inch B series engine. With a compression ratio of 10:1, it developed 340 brake horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The 1961 restyle was eye-catching, featuring dramatically canted quad headlamps flanking a retro-classic grille design. The New Yorker featured pushbutton threespeed TorqueFlite transmission, dual Quad Cross Ram induction, 413 cubicinch V8 engine producing 375 horsepower, with dual front and rear air conditioning, power door locks, windows, seats, antenna

and was fitted with a Sure Grip differential. “The car runs nice and I have tried to keep it as original as possible. I did some body work and overhauled the motor completely. I painted it, but the same as the original colours. The dashboard still has a few little cracks in it, but that is common in older cars,” said Elvin. The New Yorker name helped define the Chrysler brand as a maker of upscale models, priced and equipped above mainstream brands like Ford, Chevrolet/Pontiac, and Dodge / Plymouth, but below full luxury brands like Cadillac, Lincoln and Packard. “I like to go to car shows, but it depends on how far you have to go sometimes. I prefer to go to the locals ones. I didn’t know they had one in Bashaw, my son told me about it. They have one in Stettler the same time and I’ve been to that one before.

I’ve gone to Viking, Camrose and even Hanna,” he explained. The 1961 Chrysler, last of stylist Virgil Exner’s finned Forward Look cars, brought to a close a flam-

boyant era in automotive design. It would be the final year for the Exner designed fins and was also the year for a complete redesign featuring new slanted headlights in the front.

Music for the heart from the heart By Lori Larsen

Music has the power to heal our wounds, strengthen our psyche and improve our bodies. But it can also bring us together no matter our age, gender, ethnicity or abilities. With a vision to ensure that every person is an accepted and participating member of the community, Camrose Association for Community Living has initiated a community choir open to anyone and everyone who enjoys music and the spirit of togetherness. The choir, aptly named SingAble, is the brainchild of CAFCL community disability support worker Dan Jensen. “Dan came up with this idea a few months ago,” said CAFCL chief executive officer Esther McDonald. “He put it in our suggestion box at work to partner with Augustana in offering some sort of a music program to the individuals in our services, but ideally an inclusive music program so that everyone in the community can benefit.” Dan fostered the idea after reading research on music therapy and the benefits it has to a person’s overall health and well being. “I watched some videos on what other people had done to start choirs and singing groups for people with disabilities,” said Dan, noting that the research indicates there are not only psychological and social benefits, but physical benefits as well, such as improved breathing, speech and posture. “We liked the idea so much we asked Dan if he could help make it happen – take the lead role,” said Esther. Dan approached associate professor of music at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus, Ardelle Ries and others in the faculty of music at Augustana, with the idea and in no time at all, planning was underway.

“We now have this really wonderful partnership with Augustana Faculty of Music and it crosses over to other areas of Augustana as well, such as the Augustana Chapel (where the sessions will take place) and Augustana will have some Community ServiceLearning (CSL) students assigned to this as one of their projects. There will be a core group of people with singing abilities to assist,” said Esther. Ardelle has offered to volunteer her time as the choir director, along with Roger Admiral who will be the accompanist/pianist. “Ardelle approached numerous existing musical community groups and was very positively received. They are willing to be involved with us, maybe even come out and sing one night with the choir,” smiled Esther. The first session for the choir will run Oct. 2 to Dec. 11, Tuesday evenings from 6:45 to 8 p.m. at Augustana Chapel. The choir will coincide with the Augustana Chapel Soup Supper served during the academic year on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. While there is no fee to join the choir, the organizers welcome donations to help fund some of the costs, such as copying sheet music, and also welcome donations of instruments, particularly percussion such as drums and tambourines. “The Kodály Association is supporting us by providing scholarships for four Augustana music (research) students who will be working under Ardelle to help get this going,” said Esther.

Esther and Dan both stressed that this choir will be open to anyone in the community of all ages and all abilities. “We want this to be an inclusive music experience with people regardless of a person’s musical abilities. Even if you don’t have very good singing skills, you may be able to play an instrument.” “I can’t sing worth a lick,” laughed Dan, but he beamed at the thought of being able to afford people of all walks of life and all capabilities an opportunity to come together for the love of music and conviviality. Dan explained that in his work with CAFCL individuals, he has come to experience the gifts, abilities and talents each person has. “Everyone has their own set of gifts and abilities, and I want others to experience, as I have, those gifts.” Esther emphasized, “Regardless of whether you think you have musical skills or not, there are benefits far beyond that of just the music. “We (CAFCL and Augustana Faculty of Music) want to provide an opportunity to people who may not otherwise be able to partake in other musical activities, along with anyone from the community. Come one, come all.” Registration for the choir SingAble is required so organizers will have an idea of how many people will be attending. Registration can be done by visiting CAFCL office located at 4604-57 Street or by telephone at 780-672-0257. Registrant information will consist of name and contact information in the event organizers need to contact choir participants. “This is music for the sheer pleasure of music,” concluded Esther. “With an added benefit of inclusiveness.”

From the family of

Brian Spielman First of all, let me say how grateful we are, as the family of Brian Spielman, for your attendance at his funeral and for the fact that you stayed for the entire three hours! We never intended it to go that long, but we so appreciated all of you who attended in person or watched online. It truly was a gift to us. When people listen to others it means something, so thank you for allowing us, as Brian’s family, to share our grief with you in this way. Thank you for listening to our stories and hearing our hearts. We will always be grateful for the time you gave to us on a Saturday afternoon in June. Thank you also to Dr. Ernst Snyman, Dr. Kevin Letley, Dr. John Fletcher and Dr. Karen Mulder (Cross Cancer Institute) for all the time, expertise, care and friendship you gave Brian over the past six years. What a blessing you all have been in our lives. I would also like to thank Homecare and all of the nurses who cared for us and allowed Brian to be at home, while always preserving his dignity and worth. This is a wonderful service that we have in this community and it is so valuable. You made it possible for our family to be together until the end. Thank you to Reverend Peter Hanson for traveling from BC to offer comfort and hope to those who grieve. Thank you to CityLights Church for allowing us to use your building in its entirety. Thank you to Bryan for your technical abilities. I would also like to thank Bob and Val Bailey, Len Busse, Norm Skretting, Tom Spila, Olva Traa, Diane Carlson, Brian Dumont and Dan Gillespie for all the music and the sharing of your gifts. Also a thank you to Ken and Georgia Robinson, Keith Hafso and Jim Huber for the reading of Scripture. Thank you to those at Safeway for preparing the beautiful lunch as well as a HUGE thank you to Matthew and Joanna Stinson of Stinson Catering for providing the desserts and the lovely meal at our home. Your kindness was so meaningful during this time. I would also like to thank my co-workers at Canada Post for so graciously attending to the lunch and all you did to make things special for us. A big thank you for the overwhelming generosity in giving to the Cross Cancer Institute and to the GoFundMe for the École Charlie Killam School Band Program. Thank you for remembering Brian in this way. I would also like to thank Burgar Funeral Home, and particularly Cam Parker, for the professionalism and the compassion shown to our family during a very difficult time. You treated us with such care. Saying our goodbyes to Brian was extremely difficult, yet when it is done within a community, it somehow makes it bearable. So thank you to each and everyone of you. Our family will always be grateful. Sincerely, Nancy and children Jonathan, Shalene, Solveig, Jean-Marc, Judah, Thomas, Luke, Samantha and Epiphany

New building license legislation gives buyers relief By Lori Larsen

Effective May 1, the Alberta Government finalized a new residential builders license applicable to all builders constructing new residential homes, including condominiums or large multi-family dwellings, or renovating residential homes that require new home warranty coverage. The program came into effect on Dec. 1, 2017 beginning with the issuance of provisional licenses until the final effective date of May 1 of this year. The premise behind the new builder licensing is to reduce the risks prospective homeowners may face by establishing a licensing system, providing consumers with a single source of information on builders, and creating provisions to remove or suspend builders when necessary to protect homeowners from negligent or unscrupulous businesses. City of Camrose building/electrical inspector safety codes department Bill McAllister indicated the City is obligated as an authority having jurisdiction to ensure anyone applying for a permit to construct a new home in Camrose meets the requirements as proposed by the New Home Buyer Protection Act and the new provincially mandated Residential Builders License. The New Home Buyer Protection Act Section 24 (1) states, “A permit issuer shall not issue a building permit for a proposed new home unless the applicant for the permit provides evidence, in a form acceptable to the registrar, that the proposed new home complies with the requirements of this Act.” McAllister noted, “Anybody that contravenes this act is subject to a fine of not more than $100,000, for first offence, and for second or subsequent offences, a fine of not more than $500,000, which is why we won’t issue permits unless these requirements are met.” Should a representative from the provincial government, new home buyer protection office, inquire about permits being issued, all the City has to do is produce the file containing the proper licensing information to avoid being in contravention of the Act and subject to hefty fines. “If builders/contractors come in and they are unsure, we steer them to New Home Warranty.” McAllister explained that under the Alberta Builder Licensing, there are two classes of licenses. The first being a licensed developer, which typically builds residential projects with five or more dwelling units such as condominiums. “As soon as you get into big buildings, you get into more complicated systems such as fire alarms and

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Five Star Home Solutions safety officer Doug Way operates the skid-steer on the Townsquare project.

sprinklers. That is where the professionals get involved and they do the design. “The second class are general contractors who generally build single family homes or multiple dwelling units–fourplexes. Besides these two classes of builders, there are also the homeowner permits for homeowners who want to build their own house.” McAllister said an owner/builder can either build with or without home owner protection. “If a new home is built by a homeowner without new homeowner protection, that individual must intend to personally reside in the new home as the applicant’s primary residence for 10 years. If they don’t reside there for 10 years, then they have to purchase the remaining portion of the New Home Warranty, which can be very expensive.” If the homeowner/builder does choose to build without the homeowner protection, they must apply for the exemption through the Registrar at the New Home Buyer Protection Office (www. homewarranty.alberta.ca or call 1-866-421-6929). McAllister discussed other exemptions including one within the New Homeowner Ministerial Regulations that offers some leeway to places trying to help humanity such as Habitat for Humanity Camrose which has been exempt from acquiring new homebuyer protection and the new Builders License. “There are other exemptions for amenity buildings, detached parking garages and such, as well as reconstruction of existing struc-

tures and additions,” said McAllister. “But we suggest people come in and talk to us so we can further explain these. Typically, the new Builders License is just for new homes, but there are some formulas that apply to reconstruction of existing and or additions.” Builder’s view

Weighing in on the new Builders License, Shawn MacKinnon from Five Star Home Solutions said, “The intentions are good. Builders cannot pull building permits without this new license. You can’t even get a New Home Warranty without it, so this kind of trumps everything. “They (provincial government) check for criminal records, real qualifications of the builder and subcontractors they hire, such as journeyman carpenters, as well as financial records of the company.” One of the pitfalls MacKinnon anticipates is that having to acquire a Builders License may drive some builders to not pull permits. “It will keep the honest

builders/contractors honest,” he noted. “I’m glad they are making the effort and can see why they are, but it is not the complete answer.” MacKinnon added that some contractors or subcontractors who have concerns in their background, but are more than qualified and now upstanding and honest, may be pushed under and that the cost of the Builders License could have adverse affects on smaller businesses. MacKinnon did say that the new provinciallymandated Builders License will provide consumers with another check when selecting a builder/contractor. “The consumer has a huge responsibility in ensuring they select reputable, honest and qualified builders. Just checking references isn’t enough. A contractor isn’t going to provide you with bad references,” he said, suggesting instead that consumers should check with the Better Business Bureau, accreditations and now the provincial Builders Licens-

OH DEER

ing through Alberta Municipal Affairs (www.municipalaffairs.alberta.ca/builderlicensing). “The Builders License is more to safeguard consumers from fraud – contractors/ builders taking the money and running or not finishing the job as opposed to poor workmanship.” MacKinnon said it is in the consumer’s best interest to make sure they are getting professional, licensed and responsible builders and that technically, it is up to the homeowner to ensure proper permits and permit conditions are pulled. “If the builder/contractor isn’t qualified in structural or the subtrades aren’t properly qualified, (licensed) numerous things can happen.” He remarked that presently homeowners cannot get a mortgage on a new house without having a New Home Warranty and that eventually the Provincial Builders License will also be required. “ ‘Consumer Joe’ has to do their research. Don’t just go by word of mouth. Find out if the builder/contractor is charging over and above what they are allowed to charge and know that you have 48 hours to cancel your contract with a full refund.” MacKinnon commented that the provincial government is doing everything to work with the contractors/builders, recognizing the process does not happen overnight. “The entire process generally, from start to finish, will take a couple weeks, if all your ducks are in a row. It has to go through lawyers and be notarized, along with statements from your bank that your company’s financials are in good standing. “But if it helps to weed out shady contractors which, in turn, make all of us look bad and do nothing to financially help us because they undercut and do shady work, then it is doing some good. “In Camrose, we are very fortunate to have a lot of great builders that will abide by getting the new provincial license,” concluded MacKinnon.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.
