Counting on all Booster readers: Beckett Burnstad, a two-year-old from the Round Hill area, really needs your immediate help. Sometime very early in life, Beckett somehow contracted Lyme’s Disease plus coxsackievirus which can cause a wide range of serious ailments, not the least of which is paralysis. After a variety of inaccurate diagnoses, Beckett’s parents, Josh and Rebekah, who farm in the district, aggressively sought medical assistance in Germany where Beckett’s problems were ultimately correctly identified. The process to attempt to rid Beckett of Lyme in his nervous system is both lengthy and expensive. Many trips to see a specialist in the Vancouver area will be involved. Meanwhile, Beckett’s physiological and mental developmental clock is ticking. Unable to walk yet, his spine is becoming dangerously curved. A pricey, motorized support wheelchair is the best next step to give him mobility, plus it will give his spinal column the support it desperately requires. There are two ways you, as a neighbour or concerned individual, can help young Beckett: a Bottle Drive will take place this weekend. Bring your bottles to the west parking lot of Round Hill School on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. or Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. They can also be taken directly to Universal Bottle Depot, Camrose, anytime, where an account has been created in Beckett's name. A GoFundMe has also been started. Let’s help the Burnstads raise the $25,000 they need to help this youngster greatly improve his present situation.

Halting Greyhound Bus service

We're celebrating 441 4 461 years in business!

By Murray Green

The once popular Greyhound Bus service across Canada has all but disappeared. A lberta Premier Rachel Notley provided an update to discussions on Greyhound Canada’s announcement to discontinue bus service in western provinces and northwestern Ontario. “For Canadians in rural, remote and Indigenous communities, Greyhound has been a lifeline to work, school, vital health care, family and friends. “When Greyhound announced its decision, I said we cannot – we will not – leave people stranded by the side of the road. On the heels of Greyhound’s announcement, premiers were coming together at the Council of the Federation meeting. I promised to put the issue on the table. Other premiers had the same idea. “I am pleased to say we had a very good discussion. We know workers and students need access to jobs, universities and colleges. Women need access to secure and safe transportation. Seniors want to remain in their communities, but need access to health care. These same people contribute enormously to the well-being of all Canadians,” she said. “Premiers ag ree this is a national issue that requires a national response. We are calling on the federal government to work with Greyhound to temporarily maintain services in Western Canada so affected communities have time to develop alternative services. That will give us the time we need to work together on a long-term solution.” She spoke of the pilot project for Camrose. “Alberta has a head start with our Rural Transportation Pilot Project. On June 28, Transportation Minister Brian Mason announced four projects: two in Camrose, one in Grande Prairie and one in Spirit River near Grande Prairie. I will ask Minister Mason to build on this initiative, and to continue working with his provincial and federal counterparts to assess best practices and develop a range of options for Alberta’s communities. “I said we will not leave people stranded by the side of the road. And I mean it,” she concluded on July 20.

A construction worker in the downtown area left his vehicle unlocked for 15 minutes and when he returned learned that someone had been in his vehicle and stole money from his wallet. A female contacted Camrose Police advising that her unlocked garage and unlocked vehicle had been entered. The suspect rummaged through both the garage and the vehicle but nothing appeared to have been stolen. A 38-year-old male with conditions not to have contact with a female was arrested for breaching his conditions. The female had sent a video of herself on social media while she was at the male’s residence. Police then attended the residence and the female was found hiding in the suite. The male is bound by the condition because he is facing charges of sexual assault.

BRCF gives to Bashaw bus program Submitted

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a grant to the Bashaw Bus Society. The grant covered part of the cost of expanding the service from Bashaw to Camrose to include Edberg, Ferintosh and New Norway. The grant is from income from the Foundation’s Community Funds, all of which allow the Foundation Board to award income to projects and programs the serve needs identified throughout the Battle River Region. The Battle River Com-

munity Foundation exists to support projects, programs and facilities such as this in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually

to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $5,835,000 to support community services like the Bashaw Bus program. To learn more about the Bashaw Bus Society, contact Marianne Schroeder, president, at 780-372-2211 To learn more about the Battle River Community Foundation, contact Dana Andreassen, executive director, at 780-679-0449.

Marj’s Decor and More

Marj started working in the home design and décor business over 30 years ago. She quickly found she had a passion, and a knack for helping others create their dream spaces. Along the way she received her interior decoration designation, and nine years ago she started her own company. “The most important thing,” Marj emphatically states, “is to decorate the space to suit the clients’ tastes. This is their space and they have to love it. It’s easy to put together a perfectly coordinated colour scheme, but if it’s not what your client likes, it doesn’t matter. Everyone has different styles and it’s imperative to keep that in mind throughout the entire process.”

…a special summer feature In Camrose and area a significant number of women hold positions of power and prestige. Many others own their own small businesses or are key players in their respective companies. Before doing anything, Marj meets with her clients to determine their colour preferences, tastes and what kind of function and feel they wish their space to have. Then she works with them every step of the way, from paint selection, ceramic tile, countertops, flooring and window coverings, as well as sourcing furniture. She also keeps extremely flexible hours, so she is able to meet with clients on evenings or weekends. And the last few years, she’s noticed an extra benefit to those flexible hours. She’s finding she’s able to spend ample time with her five precious granddaughters!

Letters to the Editor It is a puzzlement

Summer is the season of things done for sheer enjoyment and one of my things is puzzles. Crossword puzzles, Sudoku, Ken Ken, logic puzzles, Jumbles – I enjoy them all. Sitting on a shady patio puttering over a puzzle, it occurred to me that puzzles have some relevance to life. The pattern

In puzzles, as in life, there’s a pattern to finding solutions. First, you notice the easy things. You fill in the easy words, the easy numbers. That feels good. Each time you add one more word or one more number, you notice something you didn’t see before. Each small answer reveals another small answer. You’re on a roll. In puzzles and in life, each step opens the door to something you couldn’t see before. And then there’s the impasse. You’ve solved the easy parts. What’s left is not obvious. You look at it, reread the clues, nothing jumps out at you. You’re stuck. Sometimes you pause, look away, look back, notice one small thing and you’re back on a roll. But sometimes, you really are stuck stuck stuck. I’ve learned that, in puzzles and in life, if “stuck” lasts more than a few minutes, the best thing to do is take a break. When you come back, you nearly always see something obvious that you didn’t see before. Nearly always that leads to a solution. Optimum challenge

In puzzles, and in life, there’s an optimum level of difficulty. Easy enough to be solved, but not so easy that it’s boring or even insulting. Hard enough that it’s a stretch, but not so hard that it’s overwhelming. In a book called In Over Our Heads, Robert Kegan talks about how to foster young men moving from adolescent self-centeredness (appropriate and necessary for one stage) to the adult capability of looking after the well-being of others. Kegan talks about “an ingenious combination of challenge and support” (a phrase I love). In puzzles and in life, to help yourself or another person grow to their next level, set a challenge that’s somewhat beyond their competence and provide enough (not too much) support so they’re not overwhelmed. The challenge has to be worthy. For example, even teenagers who dislike reading will pore over the driver’s manual to get a driver’s license – a worthy challenge.

Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Native grasses

Mr. Ernst’s informative letter (July 17, 2018) addressed issues concerning Green Space Management in Camrose, a discussion I would like to pick-up on but from a different perspective. Would the City of Camrose consider introducing native grasses and wild flowering plants (forbes) into our green spaces, possibly starting with existing or future Naturalization Project sites? Native prairie grasses have evolved to thrive in the harshest of conditions including extreme cold, heat and little moisture. They have deep, dense root systems that enable them to more effectively retain moisture in the soil. They slow down runoff and soil erosion and are able to withstand periods of drought. They add nutrients to the soil and help to build bio-diversity both above and below ground. Their massive root systems effectively choke

out weeds. Plantings may be difficult to establish but once accomplished, native grasses should require minimal maintenance. When combined with wild flowers they create needed habitat for grassland dependent species including our much beleaguered pollinators. The merits of integrating native grasses and forbes have been and continue to be studied with projects initiated throughout the Northern Great Plains, including in our own backyard. I refer to the Meeting Creek Grasslands Restoration Project headed by Glenys Smith, she and her group being a wealth of information. The Departments of Transportation of Iowa and Minnesota over several decades have re-established native grasses, forbes and other carefully selected vegetation into thousands of acres of roadside ditches. These people are my heroes. They have developed best practices and in Minnesota’s case, a detailed handbook in which their experience and knowledge is freely shared. They strongly express the need for any project of this kind to be a truly collaborative process of give and take with teams that may include conservationists, farmers, ranchers, industry, city and government officials and others. The grasses, native or not, are at the peak of their

summer beauty now. If you were to take a walk along our valley trails, know that the farther south you go, and the more you venture off the beaten track, the more likely you will pass through undisturbed areas with native grasses that have thrived in those places for thousands of years. These grasses are our precious prairie heritage. Do they not also belong within our city, in green spaces, to be enjoyed by all? June A. Osborne, Camrose Snowbirds satisfaction

On Wednesday, July 18, we drove to the airport to see the Snowbirds’ performance What a show! Thank you to all the sponsors who made this event happen. To those who set up and cleared the field– a great job. Also impressive was the organized way we were guided into the field for a perfect view. Thank you as well to the men and women who spent the afternoon and evening directing traffic. Your efforts are much appreciated. Gladys Kupka, Camrose

Good thing

Doing puzzles is fun when it’s a short break. I know I’m in trouble when a deadline is looming and I’m doing my fourth Sudoku on the way to a third crossword. I’ve learned to tell the difference – when puzzles are a harmless diversion, and when they’re becoming an addiction. In puzzles and in life, “just one more” can be dangerous. Not obvious

In puzzles, as in life, sometimes the impact of an early mistake doesn’t show up until later. There you are on the second-last number or word, and discover that – oh no! – there’s a mistake. And no, just changing one number or letter won’t fix it. You have to go right back to the beginning and start over. Real life

One way puzzles are not like real life is, in a puzzle when you discover a mistake, you can erase what you’ve done and start over. That’s not true in real life. What’s done is done and you can’t push a “reset” button. Pity. Another way puzzles are not like real life is probably one reason I enjoy them so much: Unlike real life, puzzles actually have a correct solution. In the musical The King and I, at one point the king sings a song about how, when he was a boy, right was right and wrong was wrong and facts were facts. But as an adult, many things are not so clear. The punchline of the song is, “It is a puzzlement.” As adults in a tumultuous world, we face many situations that seem not to have a solution–just choices and consequences. And consequences are unpredictable. Much of real life is not a puzzle. It is a puzzlement! ***

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. 2. 3. 4.

To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water colour. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants.

This year’s UDF program begins July 26, 2018, starting with Zone A (in Area 1) and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discolouration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If a discolouration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Ashton Ford at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428.

Donate to free the outlaws By Lori Larsen

The bandits are on the loose again causing havoc in our good town for this year’s Jail and Bail event, to be held on Wednesday, Aug. 1, sponsored by ATB Financial. The law is not far behind and once the bandits are caught it will be up to the good citizens of Camrose to set them on the straight and narrow and free them, with their generous donations. Get set for the action this year at the Bailey Theatre from 8 a.m. until approximately 10:30 a.m. The fun will kick off with a free community pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. Then high step inside the Bailey and open your heart and your wallet and support great local initiatives with your generous donations. Music by up and coming local artist Travis Dolter, will be provided for your toe-tapping enjoyment. Travis hails from Hay Lakes and will be performing a few tunes outside the Bailey during the breakfast then move indoors to carry on the entertainment with musicians Joe Wozniak on electric guitar, Rudy Blades on bass guitar and Bryan Boulanger on drums. Then hang onto your

valuables as Camrose’s very own long arm of the law crime prevention/community relations constable Kelly Bauer starts rounding up the outlaws and bringing them in for their sentencing by the toughest judge in town, Lucas Banack. This year’s benefactors of funds raised during the Jail and Bail will be the Churchmice and the Camrose and Area Animal Shelter. This year’s list of wily outlaws raising funds for the Churchmice are Muscles and Moonshine Dave McDougall and Theo Thirsk, Pistol “Bhey” Pastolero, Dan “Miami” Johnson, Cathie “Chameleon Kid” Johnson, Brian “Give Me Mercy” Dumont, Cardshark Domona Sandra McLay and Melissa Prost. For more information on Churchmice fundraising initiatives visit their Facebook page. Bandits raising funds for the Camrose and Area Animal Shelter are; from the Animal Shelter “Kibble Slinging Sisters” Susan Hertel, Lindsey Sweeney and Sue Quinlan, from PetValu the “Calamity Janes”, Tamara Breedon, Dezray Ransome and Naomi Prunkl and from Camrose Veterinary Hospital Spaghetti Eddie (Dr. Eddie Rasmussen) and Kitty Kat Kayla (Kayla McIntyre).

For more information on the Camrose and Area Animal Shelter and fundraising initiatives visit their Facebook page. ATB Financial has been supporting community based charities and initiatives in Alberta for over 75 years. In 2016 alone, that meant thousands of volunteer hours and $4.4 million given back to Alberta, through donations and fundraising. Over the past few years ATB Financial has been a sponsor of the Big Valley Jamboree and the Camrose branch is very proud to have helped raise and donate over $200,000 for important community programs including Camrose and District Neighbor Aid Center Food Bank, Sparling School Christmas dinner, Christmas Adopt-aFamily, Toques and Mitts Program, The Open Door Association, Centra Cam, Habitat for Humanity, Camrose Boys and Girls Club, Kodiaks Game Day Sponsor, Camrose Women’s Shelter, Teddy 4 a Toonie, Tour of Alberta, Camrose Bull Congress, Camrose 4-H and Courtland’s Hope. Council proposes wrapping up the use of plastic bags By Lori Larsen

City of Camrose councillors began discussion during a committee of whole meeting on July 16, on the feasibility of banning plastic bags in Camrose in an effort to reduce the overall adverse affects of manufacturing and disposal of plastic bags on the environment. Councillor Wayne Throndson explained that he had received some material from Wetaskiwin regarding their initiative on moving forward on a ban on plastic bags in Wetaskiwin. Throndson proposed to council consideration on what the City of Camrose’s next step should be with regards to banning plastic bags in Camrose. “Wetaskiwin has passed a motion forward to ban plastic bags then directed administration to start working on the bylaw to make it effective.” Present in chambers was Camrose Green Action Committee chairman Gordon Lougheed who told council the topic was on the July 17 committee meeting agenda for discussion. Councillor Cathie Johnson commented, “I think it is a fantastic idea, but for me, because Camrose doesn’t seem to be strong in curbside recycling, we do have private curbside recycling, it feels more like we think we should be doing

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Centra Cam Recycling Depot has heaps of plastic bags ready to be shipped, unfortunately there is no place accepting them at this time.

this because everyone is banning plastic bags not because we are interested in recycling. Otherwise, we would have a more robust recycle plan in the municipality.” Councillor Max Linstrand remarked, “They are separate but related issues. I wouldn’t want to see one or both lost for the sake of one.” With regards to the proposal of ban on plastic bags, he further said,

“There isn’t any reason why we can’t all use cloth bags, but I feel there needs to be a little time to get ready for this as a community. I would suggest January of next year for approval.” Councillor Throndson agreed with councillor Lindstrand on setting a date and that council should have a combined subtle front initiative on environmental concerns. “We can start with this initiative and then move

towards other initiatives and get a better buy in.” Councillor David Ofrim noted that stores are beginning to self regulate by removing plastic bags and also suggested that enforcing the ban of plastic bags would be another issue. City of Camrose director of engineering services Jeremy Enarson informed council that the City completed a study in 2014 (Waste Management Master Plan) that identified

the number of different options that could be taken by the City and suggested administration could bring the report back to council for further consideration. Mayor Norm Mayer concluded, “We will let the Green Action Committee do a review on it and come back with some of their thoughts and opinions and, at the same time, administration can bring back some of the information they have. Then we will pursue further what our time frame should be.” The following is some information provided in the report to council on July 16. Between 500 billion and one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year, three billion of them in Canada. Significant amounts of carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere as the result of manufacturing plastic bags. According to the Energy Center 2013, it takes between 400 and 1,000 years for a single plastic bag to break down. Plastic bags can and often do enter storm drains causing blockage or enter watercourses compromising aquatic health.

Cannabis citizen survey By Lori Larsen

The survey is in and the numbers indicate a fairly even split when it comes to residents of Camrose responses to the City of Camrose smoke free bylaw and the inclusion of cannabis. On May 22, council gave first reading to the proposed bylaw 3002-18 City of Camrose Smoke Free Bylaw after which two public open houses were held with minimal attendance and an online survey (closed on July 6) made available on the City website. The following is a brief summary of the survey results. Of 460 responses, 337 indicated they were satisfied with cannabis being addressed in the draft City of Camrose Smoke Free bylaw where cannabis will be treated the same as other tobacco products including being prohibited inside and within 10 metres of numerous locations. Other responses included 53 banning in public, 21 treating cannabis the same as alcohol and 16 increasing smoke free buffer distance. The second question on the survey inquired as to an alternative to the 10-metre restriction, completely prohibiting the use of recreational cannabis on public property. Out of 492 responses, 229 said yes, 27 of the yes responses suggested treating cannabis the same as alcohol, 263 said no, 40 of the no responses said cannabis should not be consumed in public and six of the no responses said increase the buffer zone area. Based on the feedback, administration proposed three options to council regarding the bylaw including: proceed with the bylaw in its current form, amend the bylaw to increase the smoke free buffer zone, amend the bylaw to remove cannabis from the smoking bylaw and develop a separate bylaw that would prohibit smoking cannabis in all public areas within the City of Camrose.

Council discusses

Councillor Greg Wood inquired as to whether or not Camrose Police Service and Camrose bylaw officer have voiced their opinion on the bylaw. Deputy city manager Kim Isaak indicated she has spoken with Camrose Police Service Chief Neufeld and that he was in favour of keeping cannabis inclusions within the Smoke Free bylaw. Councillor Max Lindstrand noted that the public seemed fairly divided on the issue (in reference to the survey results). “We have to recognize the fact that the federal government has made a decision on the issue of cannabis. So even though we might not prefer it to happen, it has happened and it would be prudent for us to recognize we have to provide some outlets for this to happen, otherwise there may be more illegal activity in the city.” Lindstrand continued by saying administration and council have tightened up the Smoke Free bylaw and that from his perspective, any reduction in the use of tobacco or cannabis is a positive thing for the community and that he would support second and third readings of the smoking bylaw as it stands. Councillor Kevin Hycha was also in favour of moving ahead with the Smoke Free bylaw, but pointed out the public concerns over the distance between the smoke (specifically cannabis as noted from the survey comments) and the children of concerned residents. Hycha inquired as to why the City would choose to go the route of including cannabis in the Smoke Free bylaw as opposed to a separate bylaw with restrictions similar to alcohol use. Isaak replied, “The province’s stance on cannabis is anywhere tobacco can be smoked, so we were following the lines of what the provincial government has done.” Hycha said in response, “There might still be some changes to the whole bylaw as we move along, but this is a great place to start.” Councillor Stasko expressed concern that any bylaw passed consider the feasibility of enforcement. Isaak added that one of the things council may wish to consider is to increase the buffer area from currently 10 metres to 15 or 20 metres. Council and administration will wait to hear further from Camrose Police Service and Camrose Police Commission on the matter. For more information on the Smoke Free Bylaw or results of the survey, visit the City web page at www.camrose.ca/.

Great news for municipal organizations By Bruce Hinkley

The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) will use $54 million in funding from the Climate Leadership Plan to deliver multiyear programs for small scale community generation, energy efficiency upgrades for buildings and schools. This new funding will help ensure that the buildings Albertans rely on, including arenas, recreation centres, pools are more energy efficient and sustainable for the long term. Grant details include $16.5 million for Renewable Energy and Community Generation, supporting small scale renewables projects in municipalities across the province; $17.5 million for Community Infrastructure Greening, helping municipalities reduce greenhouse gas emissions by retrofitting municipal buildings; $5 million for Municipal Fleet Greening, which would target the testing of electric busing in municipalities with a view to sharing the knowledge and experience broadly with other municipalities; $15 million for Renewable Energy for Schools, providing funding to school authorities to install solar technology systems on existing school facilities. The applications are not yet open for these grants, they will be available late summer/early fall. Continue to check www.mccac.ca for details on upcoming programs as they are made available. For non-profit organizations like community halls the program NEET will cover 100 per cent of the direct costs for energy efficiency audits and energy management plans for eligible participants up to a maximum of $12,000 per organization. Participants with audit costs exceeding $12,000 will be invoiced directly for the remainder. The Non-Profit Energy Efficiency Transition Program (NEET) has allocated $1.1 million to 138 non-profit organizations for 143 energy audits and energy management plan projects to date. Program details are located on the MCCAC website. Direct any questions to contact@mccac.ca or contact Calvlin Lechelt at clechelt@mccac.ca or 780-409-7450. Two constituency organizations, the Bailey Theatre Society and the Lions Club of Millet are in the process of doing their report and application. Some Albertans are opposed to carbon levies, but clear evidence from BC is that carbon pricing does reduce carbon in the air. Additional research by Bruce Anderson of Abacus Canada Ecofiscal Commission has found that 74 per cent say taking action to solve climate change should be a priority; by a wide margin, Canadians prefer governments to put more rather than less emphasis on reducing greenhouse gas emissions; and a huge majority of Canadians feel it is a good idea for the economy to transition to a reliance on lower carbon energy sources, including 68 per cent of Albertans who say this would be good for our provincial economy. Culture and Tourism has created the Tourism Growth Innovation Fund (TGIF). To learn more about TGIF is posted online at Culture and Tourism’s website at www.culturetourism.alberta.ca/ TGIF. The TGIF is composed of two streams. Destination Development Support: facilitating tourism growth through research-based studies, surveys, strategies, and plans for tourism organizations and Alberta municipalities to help them to create new product and destination development opportunities and Product Development Support: facilitating programming and capacity-building projects to offer and grow tourism experiences among nonprofit operators of tourism attractions. Congratulations for the City of Camrose Public Library for being selected for one of the 2018 Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Public Library Service “Snacks in the Stacks” program. Wishing everyone a great day until will meet again. Take care.

Bailey to host Thursday movies By Murray Green

Duggan Cinemas is on

Remember to take Aug. 30 off to see a classic movie in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Ferris is a street-wise kid who knows all the tricks. Today he decides to take the day off school. When Ferris takes the day off, so must his best friends, Cameron and Sloane. Cameron is reluctantly persuaded to borrow his father’s Ferrari, and together they hatch a plan to get Sloane out of class. Suspicious dean of students Ed Rooney knows all about Ferris, but can never catch him. Ferris’ sister Jeanie is also frustrated that Ferris always gets away with his tricks and she doesn’t. Furthermore, Ferris is an angel in his parents eyes. It’s Ferris’ day off, he’s out to enjoy himself. Take a journey of a lifetime with the Life of Pi on Sept. 13. Based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martel, is a magical adventure story centering on Pi Patel, the precocious son of a zookeeper. Dwellers in Pondicher-

ry, India, the family decides to move to Canada, hitching a ride on a huge freighter. After a shipwreck, Pi is found adrift in the Pacific Ocean on a 26-foot lifeboat with a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan and a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, all fighting for survival. Closing out September is a film called Loving Vincent on Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. On July 27, 1890, a gaunt figure stumbled down a drowsy high street at twilight in the small French country town of Auvers. The man was carrying nothing; his hands clasped to a fresh bullet wound leaking blood from his belly. This was Vincent van Gogh, then a little-known artist, now the most famous artist in the world. His tragic death has long been known, what has remained a mystery is how and why he came to be shot. Loving Vincent tells that story.

Snowbirds avionic technician keeps the birds flying By Lori Larsen

Avionic technician for the Canadian Forces Snowbirds Corporal Alex Stang of Calgary is one of a team of 10 technicians who keep the CT-114 Tutors flying smoothly. As a homegrown Albertan, Stang said he always enjoys coming back to his home province. Stang has been with the Forces for 11 years, serving the last three years with the Canadian Forces (CF) Snowbirds, 431 Air Demonstration Squadron. He remustered to the airforce after serving time in army air defence, where, he said with a smile, he was responsible for planes being shot down. Now, he fixes planes. In describing the maintenance team responsible for ensuring the operations of the planes, Stang said there are three specific trade technicians. The avionic technicians (Stang and others) take care of the maintenance of electronics, wiring, lighting, instruments and such. Aviation technicians work on such things as hydraulics and engines, and structure technicians work on the body of the aircraft as well as the safety systems. “These airplanes came off the line between 1963 and 1965, so they are older,” noted Corporal Stang, adding that people may think there is not a lot of avionic work on the older planes. “In 2014, we had to install a GPS mod (module) to fly in the US because most US airports won’t let you fly without GPS. Actually at the time, they (US Airports) didn’t believe us when we said these planes didn’t have a GPS,” he laughed. From the audience’s perspective, the show is all about what goes on overhead, but preparing for events such as the performance held in Camrose on July 18 takes long hours and a great deal of focus for the technicians. “Yesterday (July 16) was about a 12-hour maintenance day,” said Stang. “We did an engine change,

also require a hangar if need be,” said Stang. The Snowbirds are top notch when it comes to safety and during the show, their number one priority is the wellbeing of the crowd. “We follow the Canadian Forces Flight Safety program which is highly regarded throughout the world. “Before a pilot even gets to the jet, it will have gone through a thorough inspection and check and will have been signed off by a technician.” According to Stang, there is always the off chance that a plane may encounter problems during a show, in which case the pilot will land the jet and continue with one of the two spares that are brought to every show. “The pilots will give us a bit of a debrief and tell us what is wrong, jump in the spare and they will rejoin the show. We pretty much start work immediately with the plane, troubleshooting and finding out what is wrong and hopefully will have it fixed that day.” The crew chief and deputy crew chief do final inspections ensuring all paper work for the jet is complete. Thanks to the meticulous work of the technicians and the flying expertise of the pilots the July 18 show went off without a hitch.

and had different navigational systems fail. These planes have no autopilot or onboard computer system. It is about doing things the old way. It is like the classic sports car of a jet. There is a lot of maintenance involved and every year, parts are becoming more difficult to come by.” Stang explained that the entire fleet of Snowbirds consist of about 22

planes and that, at any given time, at least 15 could be in service, including 11 at shows and some available in Moose Jaw for training of incoming pilots. Each technician flies to the show destination alongside the pilot in their designated jet. That technician is solely responsible for the servicing of that jet, in Stang’s case, Jet 3. As far as site mainte-

nance, the team is pretty much self sufficient. “We bring a big trailer containing test set equipment, parts, spare engines, tools and such. That way, we can do almost any maintenance task.” Every show site is also required to have some oxygen, jet fuel and diesel fuel which makes the smoke that is seen trailing the jets during the show. “We

Camrose Police responded to a two vehicle collision at the intersection of 50 Street and 44 Avenue. A northbound vehicle was conducting a left hand turn onto 44 Avenue and cut off a southbound motorcycle. The operator of the motorcycle was injured and transported to an Edmonton hospital. The 18-year-old driver of the vehicle was charged with conducting an unsafe left turn after colliding with the motorcycle. The operator of the motorcycle is in hospital recovering from his injuries.

Cricket six a side tourney set for Augustana field By Murray Green

The Rose City Cricket Club will be hosting a Six a Side Cricket Tournament at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus soccer grounds on July 29 beginning at 9 a.m. “This is the first time that we are going to hold a tournament in Camrose. We want to create interest in the sport,” said Sanjaya Weerasinghe, president of the local club. There will be 12 teams entered and they are from Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Ponoka, Camrose and Augustana. The winners will be awarded with the Norm Mayer Championship Trophy and $600. The second place team will receive a trophy and $300. The cricket club has

invited City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer and Augustana director of athletics and campus recreation Greg Ryan to present the awards after the 4 p.m. championship final. “With only six players on each side, a game can be played in about 15 minutes. It makes it a fast and exciting game to watch,” added Sanjaya. The teams will be divided into four pools of three teams for a round robin prior to the playoff rounds. “We encourage people to come out to watch and see some great action.” For more information on joining the club or learning how to play the game, contact Sanjaya at 780-781-1796.

lead and became the 2018 Ponoka Stampede Pony Chuckwagon Champion. “Ponoka is one of the largest shows that we go to and to win and to get one of those under my belt was good,” said Cole. “I ran into some penalty trouble in Grande Prairie personally. But the horses

have been running pretty hard for me all summer. I have placed in the top five in almost every show. Taking penalties takes me out of the running for the overall top spot,” he said. “I’d like to do better than that. Sometimes it is trial and error with new horses.

I’ve been trying a few new ones out.” Cole is happy with the progress of his young horses. “The good thing is I know they will get better.” Pony chuckwagons are different than the large units you see at the Calgary Stampede. “Pony chuckwagons have small-

er horses with a height restriction and smaller wagons of about 550 pounds. The large wagons are about 1,200 pounds,” Cole explained. Pony chuckwagons receive sponsorship deals to help offset the costs of heading down the highway every weekend. “I go to between 10 and 15 events every summer. I have five or six horses, my dad and I split some horses together and we work with the horses that are on each team.” Competing in the sport does have its challenges. “We have drawn the same heat a few times. In Ponoka, we were re-drawn together in the last heat. He had a penalty, so it knocked him down a bit. At a big show like that, it was cool to compete against him. It gives me extra motivation to beat him. However, in that race, he was struggling a little in the heat, so he helped me out and let me go ahead to get a better time.” Cole will be entered in several other events until the finals which will be held on the September long weekend in Enoch. “The finals are held in different locations every year. It’s the goal to get to the finals.”

with even hotter bats and Leduc collected 11 hits and Rosalind pounded out 10. It was Rosalind that started off the barrage of hits as they led 5-0 in the third inning. A bad fifth and sixth inning, where Leduc scored seven runs, turned the game around. Mykel Ruptash and Del Kruk led Leduc with three hits each, while Steve Enright went three for

four to lead the Rosalind offence. On the mound, Enright started the game, but Ryan Yuha suffered the loss. Chad Soucy started for Leduc, but Jon Anstey picked up the win. Armena and the Holden Blue Jays were squared off at one win each in the best of three series in the other semifinals. However, the Royals emerged as 5-3 winners

in the deciding contest on July 19. Armena won the first game 8-7 and Holden responded with a 5-2 victory on July 17. In the first game, Armena was led by Sheldon Petryshyn with three hits and Ian Sherbaniuk on the mound who earned the win. Game one of the finals goes tonight (July 24) in Armena. The second game is scheduled for July 26

in Leduc. If the series is pushed to a third game, it will be in Armena, likely on July 31. The annual all-star game featuring the Powerline Baseball League and Battle River Baseball League players has been slated for on July 29 in Camrose at 2 p.m. It will be played at Harry Andreassen Field in Kin Park.

Cole Adamson had some of the best teachers when it comes to learning the skills to be a top pony chuckwagon driver. Cole is a third-generation driver following his dad Lee and grandpa Ray into the business. He started driving a mini chariot in 2009 and moved up to mini wagons in 2011. “I have learned a lot from them. My grandpa was a driver for 51 years and my dad has been in it for about 25 to 30 years now. The first year, I alternated with my grandpa in races. The next year, I took over his horses and chuckwagon and have been going almost every weekend in the summer since,” said Cole. The next year, Cole was the rookie of the year chariot driver. In 2014, he joined the professional ranks and was awarded the All Pro Chuckwagon Rookie award. He has raced in the All Pro Canadian Chuckwagon and Chariot Association events for the past four years. At 22 years of age, he became one of the youngest drivers to win the Ponoka Stampede on Canada Day weekend. “We live on a farm just outside of Camrose where I help my dad on the farm as well as work off the farm,” said Cole. “My grandpa rents out his land and we get enough hay to feed the horses.” He won the aggregate with a overall six-second

Kucy wins amateur ladies golf tourney By Murray Green

Jayla Kucy

Jayla Kucy is at it again. The 12-year-old golfer from Camrose returned from Calgary with the Alberta Golf Ladies Amateur title at Willow Park Golf Course, July 9 to 11. She participated in the ladies’ event and placed in a tie for 21st overall. Jayla shot rounds of 81-7877 for a total of 236 out of the total field of 61 women aged 12 to 69. They played white tees at 6,025 yards,

so Jayla was keeping up to the ladies. Jayla won the low overall net championship for the Alberta Golf Ladies Amateur based on her play subtracted by her handicap. After doing the math, her rounds were adjusted to 72-69-68 over the three rounds to a total of 209. That was seven under par. Kat Kennedy had the lowest gross score at 210, but when the handicap was added, she received a 216.

The automotive section of

Touring the campgrounds in grand style By Murray Green

This 1927 Ford Model T truck is great for those who love touring one campsite at a time. “I purchased this Model T off the president of the Foothills Model T club three years ago,” said Art Bent, who summers near Bashaw. “He owned the vehicle for more than 50 years. It is originally from Cardston.” The previous owner turned the truck into a camper special. “It has been restored three different times. It went from rusty to all red, black, then black and green and now green,” said Art. “It’s been in a half dozen movies as well.” The Ford Model T was an automobile produced by Ford Motor Company from Oct. 1, 1908, to May 26, 1927. It is generally regarded as the first affordable automobile, the car that opened travel to the common middle-class American; some of this was because of Ford’s efficient fabrication including assembly line production instead of individual hand crafting. “It’s been a great truck and a traveller. Many miles have been put on it. I really enjoy driving it. This truck tends to draw a lot more attention than the newer vehicles at car shows,” he laughed. Ford’s Model T was successful not only because it provided inexpensive transportation on a massive scale, but also because the car signified innovation for the rising middle class and became a powerful symbol of America’s age of modernization. “People often stop and tell me that their grandpa, or dad had one of these and it brings a smile to their face as they recall their teenage years,” shared Art. “They tell me they drove a truck just like this.” On May 26, 1927, Henry Ford and his son Edsel watched the 15 millionth Model T Ford roll off the assembly line at his factory in Highland Park, Michigan. This marked the famous automobile’s official last day of production at the main factory.

CAMPER SPECIAL

Murray Green, Camrose Booster This 1927 Ford Model T truck was changed to a camper special to tour the countryside in Alberta. Art Bent purchased this truck to go cruising, camping and enjoying history of the era.

“Ever since I was a young child, I remember in Grade 3 that my teacher and her husband both drove old cars and trucks like this, and I have always loved them,” added Art. The Model T was Ford’s first automobile mass-produced on moving assembly lines with completely interchangeable parts, marketed to the middle class. “I have loved old vehicles like this since my childhood. I never thought of buying one until one was for sale in Cochrane six years ago. It was a touring car, a 1919 Model T, and fell in love with it and bought it. I then joined the Model T club and that is how I found this truck,” he explained. Although credit for the development of the assembly line belongs to Ransom E. Olds with the first massproduced automobile, the Oldsmobile Curved Dash, beginning in 1901, the tremendous advancements in the efficiency of the system

over the life of the Model T can be credited almost entirely to the vision of Ford and his engineers. “I really appreciate these cars. They are costly to rebuild and fix, but you can get a lot of after market parts in the United States.” In 1926-27 the design change made the greatest difference in the appearance of the car. The hood was again enlarged, with the cowl panel no longer a compound curve and blended much more with the line of the hood. The distance between the firewall and the windshield was also increased significantly. This style is sometimes referred to as the high hood. “They came with a 20 horsepower four cylinder engine that runs on four coils that sparks each cylinder. They average about 22 miles per gallon. The new ones came with a twospeed, but the older ones had four gears, which was

better for hauling and going up hill.” In 1926, 1,554,465 Model T’s were made. The following year, only 399,725 were produced, leaving Art with a production car that

had numbers similar to 1915. “It works great and will cruise at around 50 miles an hour,” Art said proudly.

Alberta’s debt is increasing faster than any other province in Canada and currently works out to about $10,435 per Albertan. “Powerful government employee unions have been fear-mongering

about cutting back on spending,” added Craig. “The fact is the Alberta government is extremely bloated. If Alberta merely got its spending down to the same levels as B.C., there wouldn’t be a need to increase our debt. It’s time to start cutting the fat.” In speaking with attendees during the visit in Camrose, Craig con-

Augustana Campus hosts researchers annual meeting Submitted

The University of Alberta Augustana Campus will be welcoming researchers and research partners from across Canada for the Environment, Community and Health Observatory (ECHO) Network annual meeting from July 29 to Aug. 1 in Camrose. Funded by a $2 million Canadian Institutes for Health Research Grant, the Network brings together professionals in the environment, community and health sectors in order to understand the health impacts of resource development. This interdisciplinary approach allows members to focus on working across sectors to better understand and respond to the cumulative health, environment and community factors affected by resource development. The project’s specific emphasis on rural, remote and Indigenous communities and environments is particularly suited to the strengths of the Faculty and local organizations. Dr. Lars Hallstrom, director of the University’s Alberta Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities, along with the Battle River Watershed Alliance and Alberta Parks, are key members of the Network,

and are co-hosts for this year’s meeting. The ECHO Network itself boasts a diverse team from a variety of sectors, disciplines and communities. Co-chaired by Dr. Margot Parkes, Canada Research Chair at the University of Northern British Columbia, and Dr. Sandra Allison, Chief Medical Health Officer at BC’s Northern Health, the project draws from expertise spanning health, social and natural sciences. In addition to UNBC professor Dr. Henry Harder, holder of the Dr. Donald B. Rix BC Leadership Chair for Aboriginal Environmental Health, more than 60 individuals from within Canada and members as far away as New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii contribute their unique knowledge and skills to the Network. Participants will gather to review the accomplishments of the last year, advance existing and new projects, and identify future priorities and actions for the Network. Focus will be on themes such as gender and equity, watersheds, rural and Indigenous community well-being, intersectoral action, cumulative impacts and geo-spatial data. Highlights of the meeting will include a field day with visits to key sites of

interest within the Battle River Watershed. Starting at Battle Lake and touring through the Leduc #1 Energy Discovery Centre and Miquelon Lake Research Centre, the group will come to understand the regional history and scope

of resource extraction, as well as local community and health connections. Returning to the Augustana campus, the group will direct their efforts toward challenges, partnerships and opportunities in communities across the coun-

Concern for safety of children By Lori Larsen

City council defeated a motion for second and third readings to Bylaw 3007-18 for the redistricting of Lot 20 Block 10 Plan RN28A (5019-53 Street) from high density district to institutional district, in a four-tothree vote during the regular council meeting held on July 3. The application for redistricting would have allowed the applicant to apply to use the existing structure and site to accommodate a daycare facility. During a public commentary held by council, nearby residents of the site, Lana and Morgan Ramey, voiced their concerns regarding the high traffic flow, number of motor vehicle accidents at that particular intersection and the safety of the children who may be at the daycare. “Our main concern is the traffic and the safety of the children,” said Morgan Ramey. ‘There is a lot of traffic there and they (parents/guardians) would be dropping children off and picking them up.” Morgan indicated that the speed of the traffic in this area was also a concern and inquired as to whether or not there could be some method of slowing drivers down, such as a four-way stop or a set of traffic lights. Lana Ramey added a concern for parking in the area. Two letters from residents living close to the proposed daycare site (including the Rameys) and two telephone calls were received by the City, voicing similar concerns. City of Camrose director of planning and development Aaron Leckie spoke about the recommendation by administration to proceed with second and third readings of the bylaw 3007-18 for redistricting of 5019-53 Street and also addressed the concerns presented by residents. “If the daycare facility does end up opening, they will have to follow all regulations of the provincial child program. I am confident that before any child

enters that home, should council approve redistricting, that everything will be in place and inspected.” Leckie went on to explain that, should the application for redistricting be approved, the applicants would still have to meet all requirements for a development permit before a daycare facility could be approved. “If the development authority is not satisfied that they (applicants) have dealt with that appropriately, they will not get a permit. “At the development permit stage, we would evaluate all development conditions on the site. The transportation situation is our number one concern as well.” L eck ie f u r ther explained the social side of the issue. “There is a shortage of daycare spaces in Camrose now and, while this may not be an ideal location, it certainly presents an opportunity to alleviate some of those concerns by opening up to 45 childcare spaces.” Council concerns

Councillor Max Lindstrand expressed an understanding regarding the concerns about the traffic situation and inquired as to whether using a fourway stop would be effective. City of Camrose engineering services director Jeremy Enarson replied that generally speaking, the City shies away from introducing a stop sign to slow traffic. “You end up creating a situation where drivers are not expecting a stop sign and they may accidently go through the intersection without stopping, thus creating an unsafe situation rather than a safe situation.” He said, should the redistricting application be approved and a development permit issued, the City would work with the developer examining the traffic impact and what should be done in the area to improve safety. “I can’t say at this point whether a four-way stop would help or not.” Councillor Kevin Hycha said while he is in

favour of another daycare facility, he does have concerns with one located in this area. Mayor Norm Mayer inquired as to whether it would be possible to see a traffic plan prior to giving second and third reading to bylaw 3007-18. “The downside of giving it second and third reading at this time is the owner would then have an institutional classification as opposed to the commercial he has now. “I’d like to see the traffic plan that they would be required to provide and also any other concerns be resolved before we move forward with additional readings.” Leckie responded, “In most cases, development considerations are not one of those things we can require on a redistricting application. That doesn’t mean we cannot request one and it may be in the applicant’s best interest to understand what the requirements may be before the redistricting is approved, but it is very difficult for us to evaluate because the applicant may not have the redistricting go through before they can finalize their provincial application. The province may put on additional stipulations that may change the design of that site.” City manager Malcolm Boyd reiterated that the owner (of the property) is fully aware the application may change his use and is aware there is a risk that the development permit may not be approved. On a final note, Councillor Wayne Throndson said that the motion before council was not approving the building of the daycare facility itself, but simply approving rezoning. “The application would still have lots of hoops to jump through. I think administration is better equipped to deal with traffic and safety concerns than us (council). Administration can spend a lot more time on it coordinating with provincial government.”

Are all Battle River Community Foundation funds the same?

A.

No! The Foundation offers seven different kinds of funds, one of which can certainly be tailored to suit your personal philanthropic needs. The most general type is a “Community Fund” which allows the BRCF Grants Committee of the day to choose projects that address emerging needs throughout the area served.

Allan Jacob Hopfe April 9, 1928 ~ July 13, 2018 Beulah’s much loved husband, our wonderful father, fun-loving grandfather and cherished great-grandfather Allan passed away peacefully at Rosehaven. Allan can now rest in peace knowing he is loved and always in the hearts of his dear wife Beulah; his children Cheryl (Rick) Davis, Brad (Shiela) Hopfe and Darlene (Don) Stang; ten grandchildren Jeff (Michiko), Mike (Jessica), Kara, Linsey (Jon Beesley), Robin (Greg Prusko), Kaleigh (Matt MacDonald), Kourtnee, Kellsie, Kade, and Kenadie; and ten great-grandchildren. Allan was predeceased by his parents and nine siblings. Allan married Beulah on February 16, 1951. They moved to Camrose to raise their family and pursue his career. Allan became a certified mechanic working for Central Garage. In 1962, he opened his own service station, Hopfe Service, first with his brother, then with his son Brad who worked with him for 24 years. Allan and Beulah enjoyed traveling, camping and spending quality time with family. Our grief is outweighed by our endless wonderful memories of the twinkle in his eyes, his laughter, his teasing and entertaining stories. A Celebration of Allan’s life will be held in the Rosehaven Chapel on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Brian Krushel officiating. Special Olympics athletes off to Summer Games By Murray Green

Two Camrose Special Olympics athletes are ready to compete in the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Antigonish, Nova Scotia from July 31 to Aug. 4. Douglas and Marianne advanced to the Canada Summer Games based on their performances in Alberta. A send-off was held on July 20 for local athletes Marianne Collinge and Douglas Bailey who will both be competing in swimming events at the Games. “The number of hours put into coaching athletes is so worth it, to see how far they have come,” said Carol Wideman of the local Special Olympics. “It’s fun to see them do so well and we are all proud of Marianne and Douglas.” Last summer, Special Olympics Camrose sent several athletes to the Alberta Summer Games in Medicine Hat. Douglas won a gold medal in the

50-metre freestyle event. He also collected a silver medal in the 50-metre backstroke and a bronze in the 25-metre free style. He was also in the 25-metre backstroke event. Marianne won two gold medals in individual swimming. She was first in the 25-metre freestyle and 25-metre backstroke. She received a bronze in the 50-metre backstroke and came in fourth in the 50-metre freestyle. Both athletes have been practising twice a week to prepare for the national event and were involved in fundraising to help cover the costs of travelling to Nova Scotia over the past year. They will be joined on the plane with the rest of Team Alberta athletes. Camrose also earned a gold in softball and a bronze in basketball. Jody St. Onge and Jessica Enns collected silver medals at the Alberta Games last summer.

SPECIAL MOMENT

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Camrose Special Olympics athletes Marianne Collinge, left, and Douglas Bailey are ready for nationals, along with coach Vanessa Sheppard, centre. Missing is coach Ashlynn Semmens, who coaches the athletes. The athletes will be in four swimming events each.

Summertime fun includes picnics in the park By Lori Larsen

Camrose is certainly not shy on wonderful programs and organizations to assist in amusing out-of-school children, however there is still bound to be some extra time for family-generated fun. The following are a few ideas to help your children enjoy their summer break while creating strong bonds and lasting memories. Visit a local park. You can choose from one of the many within Camrose, or go to a county or provincial park. Take along a blanket and picnic basket full of healthy snacks and make a day of fun. Pack along a frisbee, ball, badminton rackets or other fun toys and don’t forget the sunscreen. Be a tourist in your own backyard. There are plenty of free or inexpensive things to see and do in Camrose and Camrose County. Visit a museum, art gallery or take in a local sporting event. Visit Tourism Camrose at tourism camrose.com/ or check out the 2018 Travel Guide and discover a host of fun, free and close-by activities and events. Host a backyard party complete with fun games, crafts, activities and healthy snacks. To make it even more exciting for the little ones, make it a theme party such as pirates or dinosaurs and combine a little educational component. Get active by hiking (Camrose has an incredible trail system), flying a kite, biking, bowling, swimming or playing catch, hide and seek or a good old-fashioned game of tag, and get the neighbourhood children involved. You can even create your own version of mini golf with a few fun props and pint-sized golf clubs.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster CentrePoint Church moms and children meet once a week at a city park for a session of pondering and playing. Pictured left to right are mom Jessica Schwitter, with 10-month Theo on her lap and three-year-old Josh; front left, mom Fran Scott with almost two-year-old niece Scarlett Werner on her lap and five-year-old son Carter to her right, mom Carla Werner; mom Jenn Pollock with six-year-old Brendyn to her left and eight-year-old Jordyn centre, three-year-old Katie on her lap; and five-year-old Blaise front right.

Explore Camrose with a fun scavenger hunt. Once again, this is a great opportunity to discover treasures right within the community. Bait a hook and go fishing on lakes and streams open to the sport. This gets you out of the house, enjoying the fresh air and nature, and teaches children all sorts of skills, including patience. Do plan snack breaks or other activities to break things up a bit. Be sure to check the 2018 Alberta Guide to Sportfishing Regulations at www.albertaregulations.ca/ fishingregs/ before dipping your line in the water. Pitch a tent by either visiting one of the many area campgrounds or in your own backyard. If the weather

turns nasty, then move the tent indoors into a family room or the children’s bedrooms. Bring out budding artists by purchasing some sidewalk chalk or make a homemade easel and get some water soluable paints and inexpensive canvases. To add a little extra fun, and give your child’s self esteem a boost, create an art gallery and hold an art sale. In the same vein, have weekly craft days. Read a book. Camrose Public Library not only has a variety of great reads available, it is also a hub of fun activities and events. Just visiting the library is cause for an outing. Nothing screams summer more than an outdoor

movie under the starlit sky. It’s as easy as a large lightcoloured sheet, laptop or DVD player and some of your children’s favourite flicks. Grow a garden. Not only is tending a garden good physical activity done in the great outdoors, but it teaches children the value of sustaining our planet and where our food comes from. Take them for a dip at the Camrose Aquatic Centre or one of the (swimmable) lakes around Camrose. Encourage your child to take selfies for a photo essay assignment or fun contest. Combine it with a scavenger hunt which will encourage them to get outside and discover their surroundings. Plan a staycation. Book

a room at a local hotel and treat the children to a night away from home. If you have the means and want to see the many offerings right in Alberta, plan overnight trips to places such as West Edmonton Mall, Telus World of Science, Royal Tyrrell Museum, Calgary Zoo or, for something the children are sure to get a kick out of, Torrington Gopher Hole Museum. Remember the best thing you can do for your child and you, no matter what the age, is to spend time with them. Sometimes sitting at the kitchen table colouring is enough to take the edge off the boredom and will do wonders to help you connect.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Raising funds for future students By Lori Larsen

The University of Alberta Augustana Campus Vikes for Tykes has extended its reach beyond the already successful toy drive to now include a Vikes for Tykes Summer Camp Grant Program that will be made available to Habitat for Humanity Camrose partner families. “The objective is to be able to provide funds to children of the Habitat partner families to attend summer camps,” said this year’s Augustana graduate, Vikings athlete and cofounder of Vikes for Tykes, Nicole Brockman. On July 18, Brockman, along with fellow Vikes for Tykes co-founder, Augustana athlete and student Brett Ponich, presented Habitat for Humanity Camrose with a cheque for the amount of $4,200 that will be used to assist children of Habitat partner families in fulfilling the dream of attending summer camps. The funds were raised during two separate Augustana social events. The Vikes for Tykes Toy Drive, a student-led initiative spearheaded by the Augustana campus athletes, has already collected approximately 1,000 toys over two years and members intend on con-

tinuing the very appreciated initiative. “With the Vikes for Tykes Summer Camp Grant Program, we want to connect the Habitat partner families’ children to the University and hope to encourage them to eventually want to become a U of A student,” said Ponich. McCarroll explained that Habitat for Humanity provides stability to the partner families and

the donation given by the Augustana Vikes for Tykes members provides support to the second generation of the Habitat families, suggesting the summer camp grant has the potential to grow and impact even more partner children.
