The new look for the most macho of men is heels. And, as this picture suggests, for certain the colour must truly pop!
On Thursday, August 2, Dale McKinney and Guss McKinney will join dozens of other Camrose men who are proud to take a step (and a stand) towards ending gender violence against women. The guys will be participating in the annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes march, during the Big Valley Jamboree parade, to help raise awareness of women and children impacted by the long-standing effects of domestic violence. All of these fashionable businessmen and professionals will be seeking pledges for their parade jaunt. As an added incentive to maximize the money they raise, Guss has agreed to wear a sparkly red gown during his walk for a total commitment from the public of $500 or more. Dale will adorn a comfortable, adorable, eye-catching yellow and red tutu for pledges totalling at least $1,000. Your commitment to this duo can be made directly at their shop, Rose City Tire in Camrose, or on the Camrose Women’s Shelter Society website. Funds raised will support the local Women’s Shelter Society.

Heather combined both her locations into the hotel a couple years ago; and both she and her clients couldn’t be happier. “Our local clients love that we are easily accessible and they never have to worry about parking.” notes Heather. “We also have numerous hotel guests visit us while staying in Camrose. In the near future we will be adding more floor space to essentially double our salon size, so visiting us will be even more convenient for our clients.” Heather chose her profession – a journeyman stylist – because she wanted a career that was not only positive and upbeat, but an outlet for her creative energy. However, she is quick to credit her wonderful team of stylists and estheticians for making Inspirations so successful. An AVEDA concept salon, Inspirations offers a full range of salon services, and carries luxurious, natural eco friendly body, hair and make up products for the discerning consumer.

How many peacocks does it take to… Quick! When you think of problems in large urban areas, what do you think? Traffic? Crime? Peacocks? Peacocks? Yes. According to Maclean’s August 2018 issue, in one Surrey, B.C. neighbourhood, the biggest problem is peacocks running amok. Now, before you dissolve into disbelieving laughter, hear me out. Peacocks are among the most gorgeous birds, especially when they fan out their spectacular tails. Peahens, their mates, are less spectacular but also beautiful. In a Surrey neighbourhood there are dozens of peafowl, descendants of birds raised by a farmer decades ago. When the farmer sold to developers, he left some peacocks and peahens behind. They multiplied. Generously. “The peacocks are beautiful, but the negative impact is far greater than their beauty,” says one Surrey resident. They poop everywhere. One man says in the seven years he’s lived there, his daughter has never been able to play in their yard because of it. They also squawk, beginning from first light, making it hard to sleep. The males peck chips in their reflection in dark-coloured vehicles, trying to eliminate rivals. They’ve also created controversy. People in the neighbourhood with the densest population of peafowl (one man’s yard had over 30 nesting in a tree) want the City of Surrey to trap and remove the peafowls. Others want them left alone. Reading the story, I remembered my second-hand experience of a neighbourhood peacock. When a dear friend moved to the Sunshine Coast north of Vancouver, she lived in a small enclave of about eight homes tucked into a tiny bay overlooking Georgia Strait. She expected, and got, gorgeous sunsets and lots of eagles, who nested on a tiny island near her shore. What she didn’t expect was that one day, when she looked out her floor-to-ceiling wall-to-wall windows, a peacock would land on her expansive deck. She watched, spellbound, as the peacock preened and pranced up and down her deck, fanning out its gorgeous tail, turning this way and that as if to say, “Is this my best side?” It felt like a performance just for her. It also felt unbelievable. She’d never before seen a peacock outside of a zoo. She mentioned the incident to one of her neighbours, half-expecting disbelief. The neighbour said, “Yeah. That’s Charlie.” Charlie the Peacock was an annual visitor. He arrived in the little enclave every spring. Over the summer he lost all his gorgeous tail feathers. Sometime about September he disappeared. The next spring he re-appeared, having grown a new gorgeous tail. I got to meet Charlie the Peacock several times during summer visits. It was humorous to see him looking more and more bedraggled as he lost his tail feathers. I learned that he could barely fly. I’d watch as he climbed more than flew to a neighbour’s rooftop, then lurched forward a few times, gaining momentum to jump across to a tree branch where he settled in for the night. One summer when I visited my friend, I noticed two changes. First, she had a new next-door neighbour, a mostly-retired former pop singer. At the height of his career, he was widely known. If you’re over fifty and heard the title of one of his hit songs, you’d remember him. It seemed to me that he craved attention as much as he needed oxygen, water and food to survive. It was highly entertaining at first; wearing after a while. My friend, perhaps more charitable than I, simply called him “high maintenance” and enjoyed the entertainment. After a few days, I noticed a second change in the enclave. I hadn’t seen Charlie the Peacock. “No,” my friend said. “We haven’t seen him this year.” Nor did they ever see him again. My friend’s conclusion: Charlie had been replaced by the mostly-retired former pop singer. She said, laughing, “There’s only room for one peacock.” The people in the Surrey neighbourhood might agree with her. One peacock, okay. Dozens, not okay. Perhaps that’s true of all gorgeous exotic creatures. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster City councillors toured the construction site of the 48th Avenue Bridge Replacement on July 26 stopping just outside the new pedestrian underpass built so pedestrians can walk to and from the south and north side of 48th Avenue without disrupting traffic. Left to right are City of Camrose manager Malcolm Boyd, councillors Kevin Hycha, Cathie Johnson, PSA Construction project manager Borje McKinnon, councillors PJ Stasko, Max Lindstrand, Mayor Norm Mayer, councillors Wayne Throndson and David Ofrim (unable to attend were councillors Agnes Hoveland and Greg Wood.) Kneeling in front is City of Camrose engineering director Jeremy Enarson.
Scheduling delay on bridge project By Lori Larsen
The 48 Avenue Bridge Replacement Project has encountered some delays and the City now projects the project will be complete early to mid-October. “Phase two of the project started about a week later than anticipated in March,” said City of Camrose director of engineering services Jeremy Enarson. “Then we lost an additional week in April dealing with water during the heavy spring runoff.” With construction back on track, everything was going as planned until a construction meeting in late June revealed a possible issue related to the alignment of the new roadway. Upon review by the City, project engineer Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions and project contractor PSA Construction Inc., the project team, confirmed there was a miscommunication of expectations not clearly expressed in the beginning of the project, resulting in an error in the original design related to the roadway lane widths. “We determined we were going to be narrow on
the bridge itself by about two metres.” The project team investigated various options to resolve the matter, settling on one that worked within the parameters of the progress of the project to date. The original intent was to have four metre walkways across the bridge (on both the north and south sides of the roadway). To resolve the issue related to the roadway lane widths, the team decided to maintain the full four metre width on the north side walkways and reduce the south side walkways down from four metres to two metres. “This option will maintain the full widths of the roadway lanes across the bridge itself, as well as within the roadway outside the bridge. We considered just allowing the roadway to narrow but we decided not to do this, as the project was designed with the long term in mind–50 years plus.” To proceed with this option, PSA will need to remove and reinstall two of the recently installed girders in order to provide more room for the roadway within the new bridge struc-
BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS
ture. PSA will also need to remove and reinstall some additional infrastructure, including the traffic signal poles recently installed at 53 Street. “For a project of this scale, unfortunately things will sometimes come up,” commented Enarson. “We have been very pleased with how communication has been going between all parties as we worked to resolve this issue.” Enarson added, “In terms of the budget what was approved by council is $6.7 million. As everything is projecting right now we are going to be hitting that 6.7,” he said noting that as a result of the current issue regarding the roadway lane widths, there will not be a lot of buffer left in the budget. “But we did have project contingencies specifically set up at the start of the project to deal with potential issues that might arise on a project. We believe we have room within the contingency, so there is no threat to the overall budget.” Further information will be provided during the Aug. 7 regular council meeting.

Miss Universe Canada contestant receives local support 15, with the help of the Youth Transition program in Alberta, she had already forged a life for herself: living independently, finishing school and learning the importance of guidance for youth. At age 18, she earned the manager position for the program because of her maturity and her drive to give back. Being separated from her family and growing up without her parents in Canada, Nova is acutely aware of the importance of fostering healthy development of children and youth from all walks of life. “In 2014, I entered the Miss Universe Canada event with no experience and I not only made the top 65 to enter, but made it to the top 12. This time, I want to win it with the experience I have gained,” said Nova. Growing up, Nova shone as a natural leader. She has been involved with youth leadership programs throughout high school;
she championed the importance of education for youth and helped their families foster that environment. She has always excelled in sports, competing competitively in volleyball, track and field, and basketball. This led to a full basketball scholarship out of high school (SAIT). She continues to maintain an active lifestyle and practices mindfulness to remain focused on her goals, which are as big as her personality. Through her persistence and disciplined goal setting, she has become a published international model working in the fashion capitals of New York, Paris and Milan. Currently, she is SuperModel Canada’s 2017 first runner up. Nova can be seen on the cover of Jamaque magazine’s latest fall issue. She is currently working as a model and actress who can be found in commercials for Dairy Queen, Toyota Corolla and Macy’s.
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Adut Mabior, left, of Camrose welcome her cousin Nova Stevens to Camrose. Stevens will be competing in Miss Universe Canada in August. By Murray Green
Camrose resident Adut Mabior brought her cousin Nova Stevens to our city to meet her supporters and sponsors. Nova is in the running for the Miss Universe Canada title this summer. “Futurized Media (a Camrose company operated by Mabior and Tiffany Doig) has been big part of my journey all around. They have been a tremendous help; from planning events and aiding with finding sponsorships. The initial reason as to why I flew out here was so that I could pick up merchandise from a few local businesses that have expressed interest. Tish’s Fashion and Finery is my biggest sponsor here; she has been gracious enough to allow me to wear her beautiful dresses for various events during pageant week. As well, she is giving me evening gowns for the times I
will be on stage competing for the title of Miss Universe Canada,” said Nova. “Another sponsor of mine from Camrose is Fringe Benefits and they too have given me items to wear during pageant week. I have been receiving such a warm welcome from a lot of people here in Camrose; so for that reason, we decided to host a meet and greet for me to really get to know the people of Camrose and share awareness on the charity that I’ve been supporting–SOS Children’s Village,” continued Nova. “They are a non-governmental charity with villages all over the world with the goal of providing loving homes for underprivileged children and orphans.” The Miss Universe Canada begins with a preliminary competition on Aug. 16 to narrow the field down to 65 contestants.
The final competition is on Aug. 18. Nova, 6’0”, is from Vancouver, BC and is a model, actress, spokesperson and mentor. Dynamic, resilient, persistent and full of life; this is how those who know her best would describe Nova. However, when asked to describe herself, Nova would emphasize resiliency and the power of faith in being able to change your circumstances. After her family fled a brutal civil war in South Sudan, Nova was sent alone to Canada at age six to be able to have a better life. Leaving behind her mother in a UN camp in South Sudan and her father and siblings in Ethiopia, Nova uses her new chance at life in Canada as a driving factor in her mission to provide mentorship and support to children and youth in need. Prairie Fun Days tours packed with adventure in Camrose County By Lori Larsen
Hop on board a bus destined to explore some of Camrose County’s best tourist destinations during Prairie Fun Days 2018 to be held on Aug. 18 and 19. The tour starts out at the Staples parking lot at 9 a.m. sharp both days. Riders should be at the parking area around 8:30 a.m. to get registered and settled in prior to the bus departure. Once you register you will be given a coupon to redeem at Starbucks for a regular coffee or tea prior to boarding the bus. This year the event will be set up a little differently and on Saturday will include two tours to choose from, including the Variety Tour with eight visitation locations and a brand new Agriculture Tour with six visitation locations. Sunday will host the Variety Tour only, with seven visitation locations. “Our dates coincide with the Alberta Open Farm Days which enables us to visit some of the farms that would not normally be open,” said Tourism Camrose executive director Jennifer Filip. “We have excluded a few stops (from previous years) on the Variety Tours, we can do them every other year. This way we will have more time to spend at some of these venues,” noted Filip. “In past years it was a little rushed and sometimes there was maybe only 20 minutes at a stop.” The Saturday Variety Tour will include: Alberta’s Littlest Airport, Camrose County Nature Con-
servation Centre, Rosebush Lodge, Rosebush Teahouse Campground and Foot Golf, Meeting Creek Railway Station and Elevator, Bashaw Fire Hall Museum, Little Beaver Lake and Little Beaver Lake Trail (Ferintosh) and St. Thomas Church and Burial Grounds. This does not reflect the order of the visits. “We changed things up a bit in Ferintosh,” explained Filip. “We approached the Village itself and Friends of Little Beaver Lake Society who will be talking a little bit about what is happening with Little Beaver Lake, some of the activities, the campground and the history of the Village itself. We will be having lunch at the at Hi-U Centre and have a bit of a tour of the Ferintosh Manor. “Participants will get to spend a little more time in Ferintosh learning about the Village itself and some of the attractions. The scenery out there is very pretty.” The Saturday Agriculture Tour will include: Lazuli Farms, Marshall Eco Farm, Scheilke Farm, Banack Farm (Round Hill), Bashaw Seed Cleaning Plant and Vermeer’s Dairy. “We have a few of the farms that are in the Food Artisans of Camrose County brochure on the tour,” said Filip. “Some of these farms will be selling their product(s) and we will have entry forms for the Eat Local and Win Contest right on the tour.” The Sunday Variety Tour (only tour for Sunday) will include: Irvings
Farm Fresh, Miquelon Lake Provincial Park, Buckskins Emporium Ltd., Glenview Organic Farm & Greenhouse, Hay Lakes Telegraph park, Kingman Museum and the Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church. This does not reflect the order of the visits. “We have gone out to Miquelon for a number of years, but just visited the research station that the University of Alberta operates,” said Filip. “This year we have approached the Visitors Centre and asked for a bit more of a tour around the park itself. They will share with us some of the activities there are to do and show us where the comfort camping is and show us and talk about the Yurts (from the outside as they will be occupied.) If all goes according to plan the tour should be back in Camrose at the Staples parking lot at approximately 5 p.m. In the Prairie Fun Days 2018 brochure the numbers beside each location coincide with the location on the map not the order with which they will be visited. Tickets are available at Tourism Camrose office located at 4522-53 Street (Camrose and District Centennial Museum) or at the Visitors Information Centre. For more information, visit the Camrose Tourism website at tourismcamrose.com/, or telephone 780-672-4255.

Safety on the water number one priority of officers By Lori Larsen
Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch (FWEB) have been busy this season ensuring all watercraft users and passengers are following proper boating procedures and laws. Safety first
Your safety and the safety of others, while enjoying a day on the lake, is the number one mandate of all enforcement agencies. District Fish and Wildlife (FWEB) Officer Lorne Rinkel reminds all watercraft users of the laws and regulations, in accordance with the Canada Shipping Act and Small Vessel Regulation, regarding the use of small vessels on Alberta waterways. First and foremost when operating or permitting another person to operate any human (canoe, kayak) or non-human (motor boat) powered pleasure craft, there must be certified personal floatation devices (PDFs) or life-jackets on board for each individual aboard the craft, of the appropriate size. Children need child-sized life jackets that fit them and adults require the appropriate sizes as well. “The most common offence officers observe is life-jackets not properly fitting occupants of a vessel, most vessels will have more than enough life-jackets onboard, but only half will properly fit occupants
of the boat,” said Rinkel. “If your life-jacket doesn’t fit, it makes it pretty hard to get into one when you need it the most.” Rinkel added that lifejackets need to be readily accessible for each occupant of the vessel. “Officers often observe life-jackets that are stored in storage compartments. Most occupants of the vessel don’t even know where the life-jackets are stored on the boat. It would be extremely difficult to obtain a life-jacket in the case of an emergency or boat overturning, if the occupants had to open every compartment to find a life-jacket, then make sure it fits. “It is hard enough putting a life-jacket on in calm waters let alone in five foot waves, which is more likely to occur if you are needing a life-jacket” advised Rinkel. Life-saving appliances such as a buoyant heavy line, life buoys, water tight flashlight and navigational equipment such as a bailer/bilge pump and sound signalling device are also required. Anyone operating or allowing the operation of a non-human powered pleasure craft must also have on board a reboarding device appropriate for the particular watercraft, that will enable a person to get back into the craft from the water. Non-human powered
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch Officer Mark Rayment checks for mandatory safety equipment required on board, during lake patrol on July 29.

pleasure crafts must also have on board fire fighting equipment, such as a fire extinguisher, that is operable and properly maintained; as well, all safety equipment must be in good working order and readily accessible and available for immediate use. Documents and inspection
Officers will also be checking to ensure operators of pleasure watercrafts are in possession and have on board a valid competency card (pleasure craft operator card). “You need a valid competency card or Pleasure Craft Card for any nonhuman powered vessel,” said Rinkel. “This includes electric motors or devices and it must be in your possession while operating the vessel.” Licence and registration is required by Transport Canada on any vessel powered by a motor with horsepower greater than 9.9 HP. The licencing numbers must be put on the front of the vessel. Officers may check to ensure the craft’s motor is not leaking fuel, is equipped with a working muff ler and proper navigation lights are on board when operating a power boat greater than nine feet in length, before sunrise, after sunset or when visibility is poor. Officers will also be checking to ensure anglers have and are in possession of valid fishing licenses, special draw tags and that they are following the regulations with regards to size and catch limit and other specifications.
Safe operation
Nothing can ruin a relaxing day on the lake faster than someone operating a watercraft in an unsafe and unlawful manner. Anyone operating a vessel in a careless manner, without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for others or operate a watercraft in an unsafe manner posing danger to themselves and others, will quickly attract the attention of officers and, depending on the extent of the infraction, could have their watercraft towed and seized. The need for speed is neither wise nor legal and anyone operating a powerdriven vessel at a speed in excess of 10 km per hour within 30 metres of the shore can be charged. “Some lakes or waterbodies will have speed limits posted, this is more common with lakes that are smaller in size,” explained Rinkel. “Some lakes that have migratory birds that nest in cattails, will have speed restrictions to help reduce nests being destroyed by waves.” Officers will also be on high alert for anyone operating or allowing the operation of a vessel, while their ability to do so is impaired by drugs or alcohol. Charges for this offence fall under the jurisdiction of the Criminal Code and are not taken lightly. Waterskiing, tubing and other towing sports are always popular and when done safely with the proper equipment can be a great deal of fun. However, it is important to remember there are rules to follow and
safety of everyone should be a number one priority. No one is allowed to be towed using a vessel operated by remote control, or operate or permit to be operated, a vessel for the purpose of towing a person on water, without having a person on board the craft, other than the operator, keeping watch and communicating with the operator of the craft. It is also important to remember that when towing a person on water there needs to be sufficient space or seating aboard the towing vessel for the person being towed. Age matters
Operating an engine powered vessel, like any motorized vehicle, is exciting for any age. However they are powerful and can be extremely dangerous and for that reason restricted by law. Anyone under the age of 12-yearsold can not operate a vessel propelled by a motor with engine power of greater than 9.9 HP, other than a personal watercraft (seados, jet skis without being accompanied and directly supervised by a person who is 16 years of age or older. Likewise anyone under 16-years-old cannot operate a pleasure craft propelled by a motor with an engine power greater than 30 kW, other than a personal watercraft (seado, jet skis) without being accompanied and directly supervised by a person who is 16 years of age or older. Always keep in mind the safety and enjoyment of others and when approached by a FWEB patrol boat remember, cooperation goes a long way.

Everyone wins with water conservation By Lori Larsen
The City of Camrose offers residents the following tips on conserving water that will not only help with preserving a valuable commodity, but help to relieve some of the stress on your wallet. Rain barrels
Collecting rainfall in rain barrels can be used to water your yards and gardens or wash your car or outdoor patios and furniture, instead of drawing on your home water system. However, rain water should not be consumed as it has not been treated and may contain contaminants. This free source of water could save you up to 8,320 litres per barrel per year. Based off current City water rates, this could save you about $30 per year, per barrel, which is a pretty good return on investment. Remember to keep the top of your rain barrel covered, reducing evaporation and the possibility of the growth of algae. Cover any openings to ward off mosquitos trying to find a wet, cool place to breed. Rain barrels come in a variety of styles, colours and sizes to suit your personal needs. For more information on rain barrels or how to build you own, visit www.camrose.ca/BeWise. Xeriscaping
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Rain barrels are an effective tool in collecting water for usage on your gardens, lawns or washing cars and outdoor furniture. Installing them will not only reduce your consumption of water, thus reducing your water bills, but goes a long way to conserving water as well.
*
Designing or modifying lawns with the goal of reducing or even eliminating artificial watering is referred to as xeriscaping and will save you time and money while conserving water. There are a few options
to reduce the size of your lawn ranging from adding a stone patio to installing rocks or artificial turf. Adding a pathway will reduce the amount of activity on your grass, reducing the amount of soil compression which can lower water retention. Using plants native to the area that are more draught resistant, such as honeysuckle and juniper bushes, which will reduce the need for watering. Place mulch around your flowerbeds, trees and shrubs to help retain water and keep the soil moist longer. For more tips on xeriscaping, please visit www.camrose.ca/BeWise. Toilet Rebates
Since 2008, the City of Camrose has offered residents a toilet rebate program in an effort to conserve water and preserve the environment. Since 2008, Camrose has provided a subsidy to City of Camrose homes and businesses that choose to replace their older, inefficient toilets with modern high efficiency toilets. A total of 1,164 toilet rebates have been given out, leading to an estimated savings of 172 million litres of water and an estimated savings of $330,368 (all total) on the water utility bills of residents who used the program. Residents qualifying for the program are required to have an older toilet that uses 13L or more which can be replaced with a model that uses 6L or less. If your application
meets the criteria, you can receive an initial $70 rebate for your first toilet, and up to $50 for each additional toilet you install. There is no limit to how many rebates a home or business can claim. Multi-family homes, schools and institutions can participate as well. For the application forms and for more information, visit www.camrose. ca/toiletrebate. Free water audits
Since 2013, the City of Camrose has been offering free water audits for homes and businesses which will help identify areas where water consumption can be reduced. A City staff member will attend your home and assess all water-using appliances and the water metre for possible leaks. In the case of a business, the assessor will follow all safety procedures as well as any other policy the business deems necessary. Following the audit, you will receive a report identifying all water used within the household or business, including suggestions as to where you could potentially reduce the amount of water that might be wasted. To book a water audit, contact the City at engineer@camrose.ca or at 780672-4428. Conservation is vital in ensuring future generations have the luxury of a healthy water supply.

BRCF opens doors for youth at risk Submitted
The Battle River Community Foundation awarded several grants to the Camrose Open Door Association. Grants assisting with the cost of overnight staffing at Maurer Hall, with expanding the Help Line Service and with travel costs for the rural outreach programs are funded from income from the Foundation’s Community Fund, made up of Funds established to allow the Foundation Board to select programs and projects that meet emerging or existing community needs. Additional funding was received from the Camrose Open Door Fund, established by the Open Door Board, to support operating costs and from the Dave and Gail Stolee Fund which allows the Stolee family to make annual recommendations for expenditure of income. All of these programs provide services to youth at risk in the Battle River region. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects, programs and facilities, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle
River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $5,835,000
to support community programs and facilities like those at the Open Door. To learn more about the Camrose Open Door Association contact Alison Bortolon, communications coordinator at 780-679-6803. To learn more about the Battle River Community Foundation contact Dana Andreassen, executive director, at 780-679-0449.

CUBAN LUNCH Submitted The once very popular Cuban Lunch bar is making a come back thanks to Crystal and Bert Westergard. A display box of their first prototypes quickly emptied once people, remembering the snack, found out they were being made again.
Camrose resident Crystal (Regehr) Westergard was merely trying to solve a debate when she suddenly found herself in the vortex of an idea that quite literally has her head spinning. After an interesting conversation with Kathy Hay, one of her physiotherapy clients and a local business owner, about whether or not the popular Cuban Lunch bars were still available, Crystal set out on a mission to acquire one of the tasty snacks, which she was sure would still be on sale. “They were my mom’s (Elfie Regehr) favourite chocolate bar,” said Crystal, which may have placed a little more urgency on finding one. “When her and my dad were dating, he would bring her a Cuban Lunch bar instead of flowers.” In attempt to prove herself right, Crystal began a tenacious search for the famous chocolate bar. Her search turned up some useful information about the Cuban Lunch bar, including where they were originally produced– in a factory in Winnipeg. Unfortunately, the bar is no longer in production and not a one could be found. The idea that the iconic Canadian brand was no longer in existence was somewhat disconcerting to Crystal. “There were communities of people discussing this on blogs and Facebook.” Through her research, Crystal soon discovered the trademark had elapsed and was available for purchase. Determined to revive the bar, if not just to make her mother happy, Crystal began trying out recipes on friends and family. “My husband (Bert) went online and bought me the trademark for my birthday,” smirked Crystal. And what started out as a thoughtful quest soon turned into a whirlwind venture. “We (Crystal and Bert) have no background in the packaged food industry in Canada or food science, so we went and took our food safety and handling course here in town.” After finding a retail shop in British Columbia to stock finished bars, Crystal and Bert began producing the treats in rented commercial kitchens around Camrose. “We would make these chocolate bars till our backs gave out or we weren’t speaking to each other anymore,” she laughed. “We would make them every third Saturday. Eventually, they would all be sold before we even made them.” The bars were shipped to a variety of places within Western Canada such as Regina and Edmonton and were also sold locally. “The first time we ever sold them to the public was last year during Jaywalkers’ Jamboree at my mother-in-law’s (Patti Westergard) bookstore on Main Street. That was our entry into the world of public sales.” Crystal delivered the bars to Patti in a plastic grocery bag and placed them in a cardboard box for displaying on the counter by the cash register. “We had the logos (stickers) made up locally and put one of the them on the box. It kind of blocked the customers’ vision of the sales clerks, so my motherin-law folded the box top down and ended up bending my precious sticker and I only owned two of those stickers. That’s how small we started. We only had the one carton and someone bent it, heaven forbid,” Crystal said exuberantly with a tinge of banter. “People would drive to the bookstore from all sorts of places to purchase the chocolate bars and Patti, being a merchant of old-fashioned selling values, would have no problem selling them the entire box of bars if they asked.” Producing the chocolate bars in the midst of a hot June posed its own set of challenges. “We would do 50 and wait and wait for them to mold up. We would melt different types of chocolate and pour in the peanuts. It is quite a challenge to squeeze a little peanut and chocolate out of the tiny hole at the end of the piping bag.” Realizing there was a demand for the bars and the way they were making them was not the most efficient, Crystal began the long and exhaustive search for a factory to mass produce the product. “We hired a food development company out of Winnipeg, and even they

couldn’t get the factories to respond. All their contacts in food industry had gone peanut-free. “But we also needed to make the paper cups in which the bar is packaged,” continued Crystal. “We received a high bid of $20,000 from a company in Canada to make the mold for the paper cup.” This was clearly quite a bit more than the couple bargained for, so they once again did some research, finally getting a company out of country to
make the mold for under $500. “We had 100,000 of the little paper cups made before we even had anyone to produce the chocolate bar themselves.” Eventually they were able to procure third-generation chocolate makers out of the lower mainland in Vancouver willing to produce the bar. As well, Crystal and Bert now have a packaging company willing to take on their product. “They will look very much like a replica of the original.”

Once the bars are produced and packaged, they will be ready for shipping. However, at the time of this interview, there were no bars in existence. “At this point, there are no Cuban Lunch bars on the face of the earth because people have eaten them all and I have not made any since March.” Before the bar can be made, the measurements for the wrapper need to be determined and, at this point, there is no existing
original wrapper. Crystal is sitting on the edge of her chair waiting for the process to go one step at a time to create something out of nothing. She continues to get emails and calls from all sorts of Cuban Lunch chocolate bar fans, ranging from a youthful 83-year-old to a recent inquiry for a 101-year-old lady’s birthday. If all goes well for Crystal and Bert, the retro treat will soon be appearing on a shelf near you.

Stollery Women’s Network offers up rural comfort By Lori Larsen
When a child is sick, parents not only feel anxious but often times helpless, struggling with the “how to’s” of making their child well. It can be physically, mentally and emotionally draining. Fortunately for families in Camrose and surrounding areas, living through these challenges can and is made much better through the professional, skilled and caring support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital and Foundation staff and volunteers. As a part of the amazing Stollery Foundation the Stollery Women’s Network has been in existence for four years and is comprised of approximately 500 women, men and organizations volunteering across Alberta to offer sick children support in living a long and healthy life. The mandate of the Stollery Women’s Network is two fold. Raise awareness of the need for such a facility and raise funds to support its continual work and growth. On July 18, The Women’s Network officially welcomed the Camrose and area (rural) chapter to the fold at a celebration of Stollery success and finesse during a Garden Party organized by three amazing Camrosian women. Nicole Denham, Mindy Felgate and Chella Ross were thrilled to be able to bring the network to Camrose. “We are feeling so honoured to be the first rural committee and extremely excited about our first Stollery Women’s Network event,” said Chella. Nicole said they had been trying to get areas in and around Edmonton, including Camrose, involved with the Network for a while now. “It is not only Edmonton people who use the Stollery and we are so very fortunate to have it in our back yard, only an hour away. It is our Children’s hospital,” she said with passion. Nicole and husband Brett’s journey with the Stollery Hospital began over eight years ago, when her middle daughter of three, Macy, was born premature (one of twins who survived.) “She ended up in NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Program) for 145 days and then we came home with her on home oxygen and a feeding tube, only to end up back in the Stollery. Now she has a permanent tube that will hopefully come out one day. She is eight now but has been in and out of the Stollery–had chronic lung disease. We see the Stollery twice a year for the home nutrition program and see a dieti-
cian and a nurse just to maintain her weight.” With a deep sense of gratitude Nicole described how lucky she felt to have a facility such as the Stollery so close. “There are a lot of families in Camrose and surrounding area that have used the Stollery.” Mindy agreed and added how fortunate Camrose and area families are to
dy and Nathan the emotional support they needed. “Our Stollery journey didn’t end there,” said Mindy. “Through the years Owen was diagnosed with a stroke and most recently epilepsy.” Through the struggles of keeping Owen well, Mindy and Nathan had twin boys Eli and Isaac in 2015, who were born prematurely

be living in a community that is so giving. “There are so many people and businesses that want to get involved and give back to meaningful organizations like the Stollery. Mindy and husband Nathan’s story with the Stollery began six years ago after the birth of their first son (of three) Owen. “I vividly remember the day my oldest son Owen was born. I had him via c-section here in Camrose on a beautiful August morning. He was born shortly after 8 a.m. the picture of health, or so everyone thought.” Approximately 10 hours into Owen’s little life things didn’t seem right. Unable to regulate his body temperature he began turning blue. St. Mary’s staff immediately contacted the Stollery and a pediatric emergency team arrived in Camrose within an hour. Owen was transported to the Stollery was diagnosed with a life threatening congenital heart defect. “Everyone at the Stollery made us feel like we were not alone and we were all focused on the same goal,” said Mindy, which was giving Owen the medical support he needed all the while offering Min-
and both with Down Syndrome. “They are followed by the Down Syndrome Clinic which is also part of the Stollery,” said Mindy. “We ‘visit’ this hospital each year, so many times I lose track. This is a part of our lives, and I cannot thank all of the supporters enough for helping make this hospital one of the best.” Mindy remarked that their entire family owes a heap of gratitude to the Stollery and being part of the Women’s Network was a wonderful way for her to return the giving she has so graciously received. “For me personally, as a mom with sick children, it is nice to get out with other moms and do something meaningful and give back to an amazing hospital that we owe so much to.” Chella noted that because the Camrose Chapter of the Women’s Network is in its inception there are no specific expectations or rules guiding membership. “It is part of the Network that we all love. It’s about making it whatever we want to make of it. You can join to volunteer or advocate or give donations. “There are no rules, no limits, no expectations. It

We had 26 years with her and for that we are forever grateful.” Each sharing their own compelling stories about what a gift the Stollery has been to them and is to many families in the area, Nicole, Mindy and Chella want to encourage other women to become part of the Camrose and area Chapter of the Stollery Women’s network. “We understand how busy women can be, with children and work. This allows you to do what you can when you can,” said Nicole further explaining that all that is required is for the interested individual or organization to sign up with their email and they will automatically receive notifications on upcoming events where they may chose to participate. “The reason this is

The hospital staff preform over 11,000 surgeries per year. The survival rate for children receiving care at the Stollery PICU is an impressive 95-97 percent. Starfire is a family car for the Babcocks By Murray Green
Kevin Babcock, who lives near Bashaw, is the proud owner of a 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire car. But, it didn’t start out that way. “I purchased the car from a fellow in Bashaw about five years ago. I bought it the way it is and it is originally from the United States. The Starfire was not sold in Canada,” explained Kevin. “It was known as a Delta 88 in Canada.” The Starfire name was first used by Oldsmobile on a one-of-a-kind dream car that was shown at the 1953 Motorama auto show. Named after the Lockheed F-94 Starfire jet fighter, the original Starfire was a five-passenger convertible that had a fiberglass body, a 200 hp (150 kW) Rocket V8 engine, and a wraparound windshield like that used on the top-of-the-line and limited-production 1953 Fiesta 98 convertible. The Oldsmobile Starfire is an automobile nameplate used by Oldsmobile, produced in three non-contiguous generations beginning in 1954. The Starfire nameplate made its debut with the 1954–56 Ninety Eight series convertibles. By 1957 all Ninety-Eight series models were Starfires. “Actually, my son originally bought the car, but he had to borrow money from mom and dad to buy it and then he sold it back to us,” Kevin laughed. Other than inheriting the vehicle, Kevin liked the fact of owning an older car. “I’ve always liked older cars and I want to keep it as original as possible.” After a two-year hiatus a single convertible body style Starfire became available in 1961. Intended to compete in the growing personal luxury car market, it shared most of its sheet metal with other models and was considered part of the full-sized Oldsmobile line. The Starfire Hardtop Coupe joined the convertible for the 1962 model year. The convertible was dropped for the final 1966 model year, moving to the Eighty-Eight model line. “Last year, I put about 24 miles on it. I went to the Bashaw and Red Deer car

shows and that was about it. Maybe it was more than 24 miles because I went to a wedding as well,” Kevin recalled. Introduced in January 1961 as a convertible, the Starfire was separated into its own model line and shared its body and wheelbase with the Super 88 and the lower-priced Dynamic 88. It was loaded with standard equipment including leather bucket seats, center console with tachometer[3] and floor shifter for the Hydra-matic transmission, and was the first U.S. full-sized production car to feature an automatic transmission with a console-mounted floor shifter, brushed aluminum side panels and power steering, brakes, windows and driver’s seat. “The previous owner did a lot of work on it and re-did the upholstery.” With a base price of $4,647 in 1961, it was the most expensive Oldsmobile, even more than the larger
Ninety-Eight models. The standard 394 cubic inch V-8 Skyrocket V8 engine Oldsmobile’s most powerful in 1961 used a 4-barrel Rochester carburetor and generated 330 hp (246 kW) at 4600 rpm. Sales of the 1961 model were 1,500. “It is a little different to drive. It is an automatic, but the reverse is at the bottom. It you mistakenly put it into low, you are going the other way,” he chuckled. For the 1962 model year, the convertible was joined by a two-door hardtop, which featured a new convertible roofline shared with other Oldsmobile 88 coupes. Horsepower was increased to 345 hp (257 kW). 1962 was the best sales year for the second generation Starfire with sales of the hardtop coupe being 34,839 and sales of the convertible being 7,149. “Now that I have the car, I want to keep it. My grandsons Beau and Branson Babcock love the vehicle, so it is a car that I
would pass on to them one day.” After a nine-year break, the Starfire nameplate returned for the 1975 model year as Oldsmobile’s first subcompact, powered
by a Buick V6 engine. The 1977 Starfire featured the first-ever Oldsmobile fourcylinder engine as standard equipment, with a V6 and V8 optional. Production ceased in 1980.

Coming into Canada illegally By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot
On the advice and insistence of Conservative MP and Immigration Critic, Michelle Rempel, the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration held an emergency meeting the week of July 16th and they will continue to meet throughout the summer. At issue is the inadequacy of the Trudeau Government’s response to the increased number of asylum seekers crossing into Canada. Canadians expect our refugee system to be safe, orderly, and compassionate. Unfortunately, what we are experiencing now, and have been for a number of months, is insecurity, chaos and a lack of sincere empathy. Thousands of illegal or “irregular” border crossings have been occurring since the Prime Minister irresponsibility tweeted “#WelcomeToCanada” in January 2017. Twice as many refugees are being admitted into Canada than the system was designed to handle. While I do not want to cast blanket aspersions, some of those coming into our country may have criminal records. Without proper background checks, which cannot be done before one crosses illegally, persons that pose a safety risk to our citizens may be slipping into Canada. The newly appointed Minister for Border Security and Organized Crime Reduction will certainly have his hands full as he takes on this huge task of trying to stem the tide. Actions, however, speak louder than words. Only time will tell whether the new minister can in fact take control of this illegal and dangerous situation and his appointment isn’t only for show. We have yet to see the mandate for this Liberal-created department which is being craved out of the current Public Safety portfolio. This queue-jumping has also created a unfair situation where those waiting in refugee camps or facing persecution in dangerous places around the world must wait longer, as more and more scarce resources are being spent processing people crossing into Canada from the U.S. This two-tiered system is compromising the integrity of our immigration system while putting those patiently waiting to be legally approved to come to Canada at further risk. It is not compassionate, nor fair, when individuals who have been brought here on humanitarian grounds, are forced to live in homeless shelters, university dormitories and tent cities because this country is illprepared to handle such volumes of asylum seekers. The Syrian refugees, who a majority of Canadians overwhelming supported being brought here, are now facing housing shortages particularly in Toronto and Montreal. The Mayors of these two large cities have been requesting federal financial assistance to redress the situation. Saskatchewan and Manitoba have also been asking for some additional funding. To date, Trudeau’s only solution–as it is with so many issues–has been to use more taxpayers’ dollars to manage the crisis, instead of resolving the issue with a fully costed plan. My colleagues and I will continue to call for policy solutions that go beyond simply spending more money or making token appointments. We want to see our immigration system run on a safe, orderly and compassionate basis that prioritizes the world’s most vulnerable and that ensures when refugees are brought to this country we can in fact support them. Tomtars taking up guard Dolly Alice Marie McCrea
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Grateful Grannies of Camrose and area make adorable tomtars as part of their fundraising efforts. By Lori Larsen
Little Swedish tomtar, aka Norwegian nissers or Canadian gnomes, are making appearances in Camrose thanks to the dedication and hard work of the Grateful Grannies from Camrose and area. Grateful Grannies member Carol Roy came up with the idea of making these fictional characters into ornamental pieces as one of the newest fundraising initiatives for the Grateful Grannies. “She had a few for sale at the 2016 Grateful Grannies Christmas market and they sold easily,” said Grateful Grannies member Marian Williams. “Last year in the fall of 2017, she organized a few work bees with the Grannies and we made a bunch of them for last year’s Christmas market, selling about 47 in just over an hour.” The adorable elflike characters are decked out in Scandinavian garb, from the pointy hats to furcuffed sweaters and little felt booties. Each little gnome is handmade by volunteers and possesses their own unique personality, look
and a tag that has their name (translation) and a write-up about how 100 per cent of the sales goes to the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmother to Grandmother campaign. Currently, they are being sold at The Lefse House and will also be available during the Grateful Grannies annual Christmas Market, normally held in November (date to be announced). “Since the inception of the Grateful Grannies in 2010, the Camrose and area grannies have raised over $170,000 through many different fundraising ventures including the selling of the AIDS Angels, handcrafted cards, potluck dinners and garden parties, and now the sale of the tomtar,” said Williams. Williams further explained that the Grateful Grannies Camrose and area are one of over 240 groups across Canada (now expanding to Australia, UK and USA) who raise funds to assist grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa as they care for a generation of orphaned grandchildren and others affected by HIV/AIDS. The Afri-
can grandmothers, despite their hardships, have become the heart and the energy behind the response to the pandemic. Most Scandinavians will be able to relate to the wonderful folklore attached to the little gnomes. “They are not trolls,” said Williams, with a hint of certitude. “These little elves guard the farms. They are known to be happy and mischievous,” she laughed. “The family needs to treat them well or they will play tricks on them.” Oddly enough, or perhaps not so much, as legend often goes, the little elves are never spotted by humans. Now anyone can have one of these little elves guarding their homes and adorning their shelves. The Grateful Grannies’ next meeting will be held on Oct. 20. New members are welcome to come out to the meeting and potluck dinner and be a part of a wonderful social network dedicated to making a better life for others around the world. For more information, contact Marian Williams at 780-672-1711.
October 16, 1929 ~ July 25, 2018 Dolly Alice Marie Orr was born to George and Queenie Orr on October 16, 1929 and was the eldest of ten children. Dolly attended school in Rosalind until Grade 9. Dolly met then married Bob McCrea on October 17, 1948. They spent their early years on the family farm before moving to Camrose in 1962. Mom kept close to her roots in helping family and friends on the farm with whatever needed to be done; she made bread every Wednesday and dozens of cinnamon buns. Mom and Dad allowed many “strays” into their home when others needed a place to stay. Dolly worked for many years at Baum’s Sewing Center and Nelson’s Jewelry. Then Mom and Dad “retired” to Double Dam Golf course. Mom enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing and quilting; and all the grandchildren have something created by Grammy. These grandchildren were fortunate enough to feel the power when she either threw or hit baseballs to them. Mom was a longtime member of the Rosalind Royal Purple. She later enjoyed travelling and was to San Diego many times. Mom had a strong love for music which was evident when Bob was in the band. This extended to booking the talent during her stay in Heritage Manor and as she mouthed the words of favorite songs when she could no longer sing. Mom will be remembered for her strength, commitment and humor even as her health deteriorated. She is survived by her children Donna (Barry) Bowie, Terry (Anne-Marie Harrison), Tom (Julie), Ron (Shelly) and Randy (Donna Klutz); eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; siblings Marion Hoflin, Sylvia Turner, Bonnie (Ron) Kercher, Tom (Sharon) Orr and Marlene (Tim) Shopland; and sister-in-law Florence Boden. Dolly was predeceased by her husband Robert; brothers Merril Orr and Gordon Orr; sisters Elsie Schweer and infant sister Leona May. A Funeral Service was held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 30, 2018 from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Mary Ann Pastuck officiating. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the S.T.A.R.S. Air Ambulance or to the Hospice Society of Camrose and District. Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results!
BETHLEHEM CEMETERY DECORATION DAY – August 19, 2 p.m. If questions, call 780-672-6122.
Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Protection for power consumers By Murray Green
It has been a long time coming, but consumers might soon have more protection from outrageous power bills. Proposed legislation would help stabilize electricity prices, while better protecting Albertans from incorrect power bills. Energy minister Margaret McCuaig-Boyd proposed legislation to further modernize and strengthen Alberta’s electricity system with a focus on increasing consumer protection. If passed, an act to Secure Alberta’s Electricity Future would better protect consumers by empowering the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) to penalize electricity and natural gas service providers for breaches of customer service, such as sending out late bills or overcharging consumers. In Alberta, the only tool available to hold companies to account is a formal hearing process, which can be lengthy and costly. This legislation would allow the AUC to issue penalties, similar to a traffic ticket, to ensure all service providers are following the rules. “This is about having the backs of everyday families. Many consumers are frustrated and have asked us to address their concerns and we’re responding to give them higher quality service from their energy providers,” said McCuaigBoyd. The AUC would develop the penalties in consultation with stakeholders and service providers to ensure they are fair. “As an independent and residential-focused consumer group, we’re encouraged by legislation that’s designed to protect Alberta utility consumers. We’re pleased to see the government views efficient and effective consumer protection as an important part of the public interest,” said Jim Wachowich, Consumers’ Coalition of Alberta If passed, the act would also increase investor confidence by providing policy and regulatory certainty by clarifying how infrastructure losses and profits are split between consumers and utility companies; provide more options to Albertans who want to generate their own electricity from renewable or alternative sources and enable the creation of a capacity market. Creating a capacity market for electricity would protect consumers from price volatility and provide a reliable supply of power at stable, affordable prices. Currently, Alberta is one

Bottom photo: A delightful little tea party on July 25 as part of the Museum Children’s Program had tea totallers, back to front, six-year-old McKaela, threeyear-old Elora and nineyear-old Kaylee Stewart tipping back a spot of tea in fine china.
