Pritchett rock energy Friday 12 a.m.
Acclaimed for bringing rock energy to country audiences, Aaron Pritchett continues to hold the title of one of the most sought-after artists in the music business. Growing up in smalltown northern BC, Aaron drew his earliest musical influences from ’80s rock, but the transition to country music came naturally. “It was based on being able to relate to the stories that country songs told. Those stories were a lot like mine. I was going fishing, camping, and riding buses to hockey tournaments in even smaller towns than my own; life was a lot more country
than rock and roll. That feeling resonated with me and I strive to convey that in my music today.” His rock roots have had a major influence on his sound with hits such as the classic’s “Big Wheel”, “Hold My Beer” and “Let’s Get Rowdy” to his latest “Boat on the Water,” “Hold You Like My Whiskey” and “Wake You With A Kiss.”

Harvest 2018 Fuel up for harvest and
DON’T PAY UNTIL SEPTEMBER 30 Thursday 9:30 p.m.
Celebrating their golden (50th) anniversary together, the iconic and profoundly influential Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, often cited as a catalyst for an entire movement in country rock and American roots music, continues to add to their legendary status. With multi-platinum and gold records, strings of top 10 hits such as “Fishin’ In The Dark” and “Mr. Bojangles”, multiple Grammy, IBMA, CMA Awards and nominations, the band’s accolades continue to accumulate. Their groundbreaking Will The Circle Be Unbroken album has been inducted into the U.S. Library of Congress as well as the Grammy Hall of Fame. NGDB’s recording of “Mr. Bojangles” was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2014, “Fishin’ In the Dark” was certified platinum for digital downloads by the RIAA. NGDB (Jeff Hanna, Jimmie Fadden, Bob Carpenter, John McEuen) continue their non-stop touring in their 50th year together. Recent tour stops included Stagecoach, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival and many more. The plans for their 50th anniversary will be extensive. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band played the first BVJ in 1993 and played three additional years – in 1994, 1996 and 2012, to help celebrate BVJ’s 20th anniversary.

Emerson Drive putting on miles at BVJ Saturday, 12:00 midnight
A decade of great music and over a million miles of life on the road have brought Emerson Drive to the spot that many artists dream of, a Grammynominated country band with a bright future. After 10 years the members of Emerson Drive are excited to have reached this career milestone and can’t wait to see what the next 10, 20 or 30 years will bring. “We have been playing music our entire lives,” explained lead vocalist Brad Mates. “None of us can imagine doing anything else. We belong together on that stage each night. It’s exciting for us to see what we have accomplished so far and to be planning for the next decade. This tour is still just the beginning.” Emerson Drive has been a part of the country music scene since they signed their first record deal with DreamWorks Records Nashville in 2001. The band’s first two singles, “I Should Be Sleeping” and “Fall Into Me,” peaked in the Top 5 on the Billboard charts and quickly became fan favorites but it was the career-
changing song “Moments” that gave the band their first #1 single in the USA. Emerson Drive has been honored with awards and/ or nominations from the Academy of Country Music, Country Music Association, Canadian Country Music Association, CMT, Dove Awards, Grammy Awards, Inspirational Country Music Association, JUNO Awards, Music Row Magazine and Campus Activities Magazine. The band has toured with Toby Keith, Shania Twain and Big & Rich among other artists. The Decade & Driving Tour celebrates the ten years of great music
that began with Emerson Drive’s debut single, “I Should Be Sleeping,” and continues today with their most recent single release, “Let Your Love Speak” from their Decade of Drive: The Hits album. “This tour is a celebration,” commented lead vocalist Brad Mates. “We have spent 10 years out on the road sharing our music with country fans across North America. We can’t wait to take the party back out on the road.” Emerson Drive has performed twice on the BVJ Main Stage; 2006 and 2012.

Thomas Rhett Akins, Jr. is an American country music singer and songwriter. Rhett has released three studio albums: It Goes Like This (2013), Tangled Up (2015), and Life Changes (2017). In addition to much of his own material, Rhett has written singles for Jason Aldean, Lee Brice, Florida Georgia Line, LoCash and Michael Ray. After learning to play drums while attending junior high school, Rhett would later go onstage with his father and play. In high school, he was part of a band named The High Heeled Flip Flops. Besides music, he did not have a career choice in mind. After high school, Rhett went to college at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee to study communications, mainly because his friends were going to college and he didn’t know what else to do. Rhett’s interest in music grew throughout the years and he dropped out of college when he was 20 to pursue a career in music. One night while playing at a club, an executive from Big Machine Label Group approached him and offered him a publishing deal to write songs. He accepted and began writing many songs for the company. In early 2012, he released his debut single,
“Something to Do with My Hands” followed later that year by “Beer with Jesus.” Both of these made top 30 on the Hot Country Songs charts. His third single, “It Goes Like This” topped the Country Airplay chart and also peaked at number two on the Hot Country Songs. His debut album, also titled It Goes Like This was released in 2013. The album’s fourth single, “Get Me Some of That” became Rhett’s second number one single in early 2014. The album’s fifth single, “Make Me Wanna” was released to country radio in 2014. It reached number one on the Country Airplay chart in 2015. On April 7, 2015, Rhett released a new single titled “Crash and Burn” which served as the lead single to his second studio album. The album, Tangled Up. It reached number one on the Country Airplay chart. The album’s second single, “Die a Happy Man” released to country radio on Sept. 28, 2015. It reached number one on the Country Airplay, Hot Country Songs and Canada Country chart in December 2015 and January 2016. It stayed at number one on the Country Airplay chart for eight weeks, becoming the second song in the chart’s history to do so.

southern rock combined with elements of gospel and pop music gave it a crossover appeal that helped lead to their success. They also toured extensively and incorporated production elements such as lighting and sets inspired by rock concerts into their shows. The band has over 30 number one country records on the Billboard charts to their credit and have sold over 75 million records, making them one of the most successful bands in country music history. Alabama’s music mixes both country, rock and pop, particularly evident in their musical concept: the band was one of the first country bands to achieve significant airplay. Despite their influences from other genres, the band was most inspired by country music which is most evident in their “harmonies, songwriting and approach”. Stephen Thomas Erlewine writes that the band is “indebted to country, particularly the Bakersfield sound of Merle Haggard and the sound of Nashville pop.” The band echoed its country upbringing in one of its first trade articles: “We’re country first and crossover second. If crossovers come, that’s great, but we’d rather have a No. 1. country song than be lost in the middle of both country and pop charts,” said Owen. By the mid-1980s, the band increasingly moved toward a general pop-rock sound, “going for splashier productions with a more heavily amplified sound”. Alabama’s lyrics often centered on their homeland. Their first hit single “Tennessee River” recounts being “born across the river in the mountains I call home”, while “Dixieland Delight” chronicles cruising down a rural Tennessee byway.

Alabama is a southern country rock band formed in Fort Payne, Alabama, in 1969. The band was founded by Randy Owen (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and his cousin Teddy Gentry (bass guitar, background vocals). They were soon joined by their other cousin, Jeff Cook (lead guitar, fiddle and keyboards). The three cousins all shared vocal duties with another cousin, drummer Jackie Owen, completing the group’s first lineup. First operating under the name Wildcountry, the group toured the Southeast bar circuit in the early 1970s and began writing original songs. They changed their name to Alabama in 1977 and following the chart success of two singles, were approached by RCA Records for a record deal. “I Wanna Come Over” became their first radio hit, reaching the top 40 in the Billboard country chart. The group’s next single, “My Home’s in Alabama” received an even better response, reaching the top 20. Alabama’s biggest success came in the 1980s, where the band had over 27 number one hits, seven multi-platinum albums and received numerous awards. Alabama’s first single on RCA Records, “Tennessee River” began a streak of 21 number one singles, including “Love in the First Degree” (1981), “Mountain Music” (1982), “Dixieland Delight” (1983), “If You’re Gonna Play in Texas (You Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band)” (1984) and “Song of the South” (1988). The band’s popularity waned slightly in the 1990s although they continued to produce hit singles and multi-platinum album sales. Alabama disbanded in 2003 following a farewell tour and two albums of inspirational music, but reunited in 2010 and have continued to record and tour worldwide. The band’s blend of traditional country music and

Florida Georgia Line cruises to the top of charts Sunday 9 p.m.
Florida Georgia Line consists of vocalists Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley. Their 2012 debut single “Cruise” which remains their most popular song, broke two major sales records: it was downloaded over seven million times, making it the first country song ever to receive the Diamond certification, and it became the best-selling digital country song of all time, with 24 weeks at number one, until it was surpassed in July 2017 by Sam Hunt’s “Body Like a Back Road.” “Cruise” helped to pioneer a style of country music known as “bro-country,” which incorporates production elements from rock and hip-hop music, and tends to cover subject matter such as partying, drinking, driving trucks and romantic attraction. Florida Georgia Line was formed in 2010 in Nashville, Tennessee and began as a covers band. In December 2011, they signed to the Big Loud Mountain label. Their second EP, It’z Just What We Do, was released in 2012 and charted on the Billboard
Top Country Albums chart. They released their second album, Anything Goes on October 14, 2014. Their third album, Dig Your Roots was released in 2016. Both members of Florida Georgia Line first gained interest in music through church worship services. Brian Kelley, from Ormond Beach, Florida, was a star pitcher on his high school baseball team, leading to a
scholarship at Florida State University; he later transferred to Belmont University after it became clear to him he would not succeed in the sport. He began learning to play guitar, then began writing music inspired by Christian rock group Casting Crowns. Tyler Hubbard, a native of Monroe, Georgia, was a church worship leader who formed a hip hop
top 20 of the Hot Country Songs chart and his first to appear on the Billboard Hot 100. His debut studio album, Bring You Back, was released in 2013. “Don’t Ya” reached number one on the Country Airplay chart. The album’s second single, “Beat of the Music” also reached number one on the same chart. The album’s third single, “Mean to Me” was released to country radio in 2014. It reached number one on the Country Airplay chart in March 2015. Eldredge’s sixth single overall, “Lose My Mind” was released in 2015. It is the lead single to his second studio album, Illinois. It reached number one on the Country Airplay chart in October 2015. The album’s second single, “Drunk on Your Love” reached number two on the Country Airplay
chart in April 2016. The album’s third single, “Wanna Be That Song” reached number one on the Country Airplay in January 2017. He was one of the opening acts on Taylor Swift’s Red Tour. In 2016, Eldredge was selected as one of 30 artists to perform on “Forever Country”, a mash-up track of Take Me Home, Country Roads, On the Road Again and I Will Always Love You which celebrates 50 years of the CMA Awards. Eldredge released his first Christmas album, Glow, in October 2016. In March 2017, he released “Somethin’ I’m Good At” the lead single to his self titled fourth studio album, Brett Eldredge. The album’s second single, “The Long Way” peaked at #3.
group, Ingenious Circuit, in his teens. The two had a myriad of musical interests growing up: “Me and my friends drove trucks, listened to Garth Brooks, Alabama, Lil Wayne and Eminem,” said Kelley. The duo met at Belmont University in 2008 through a campus worship group, and following graduation, decided to give themselves two years to succeed as a
country duo. They moved in with one another and began several odd jobs to pay bills, while playing clubs on the weekends. While independent, they recorded and digitally distributed their first EP, Anything Like Me (2010). They were discovered by Nickelback producer Joey Moi at a county fair and the three began entering the studio together. Unlike typical country music sessions, the group spent days polishing songs, which were collected on the duo’s second EP, It’z Just What We Do (2012). In terms of production, the band modeled their sound on bands such as Nickelback, Shinedown, and Three Days Grace, while Moi aimed for each song to resemble hair metal group Def Leppard in structure. Major labels became interested when the song “Cruise” first aired on satellite radio on “The Highway” channel and began selling well on iTunes, leading to a major deal.
Number one hits keep coming for Eldredge Sunday 7:30 p.m.
Brett Ryan Eldredge has had three No. 1 singles on the Billboard Country Airplay chart from his debut studio album, Bring You Back “Don’t Ya,” “Beat of the Music” and “Mean to Me.” Eldredge co-wrote the track “I Think I’ve Had Enough” for Gary Allan, who recorded it for his eighth studio album, Get Off on the Pain. By late 2010 he had signed to Atlantic Records and released his debut single, “Raymond.” It debuted at number 52 on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and reached a peak of number 23. “It Ain’t Gotta Be Love” was released as his second single and reached number 46. A third single, “Don’t Ya” was released to become his first single to reach the

Hooper’s jokes, music leads to two decades at BVJ Sunday 2 p.m.
Celebrating a major milestone in his career, Danny Hooper returns for his 20th year as Master of Ceremonies at Big Valley Jamboree. “It’s been amazing to watch this event grow into one of the largest and most successful outdoor music festivals in the world,” said the popular Alberta-based recording artist and entertainer. “And I’ve been able to watch it all from up here on the main stage...how cool is that?” Little did Danny know when his father Don bought
him his first guitar at age 10 that one day he would not only be rubbing elbows with the likes of Vince Gill, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw and hundreds of other country stars, but also introducing these acts to crowds of 25,000 and more. But then, rubbing elbows with the stars began early for Danny. At age 21, he and his dad opened their own country nightclub in Edmonton. Called Danny Hooper’s Stockyard, the hugely popular steakhouse showcased superstars like Merle Haggard, Ray Price and Tammy Wynette on a regular basis.
Since that time, Danny’s career path has taken several interesting twists and turns. Today, he is also a successful fundraising auctioneer, business and motivational speaker, and awardwinning media personality. Danny and his band, featuring Grammy award-winning guitarist Redd Volkaert and North American Grand Old Time Fiddle Champion Calvin Vollrath, will kick off this year’s BVJ the way it should be kicked off...with country music that sounds like country music.

Luke Combs
Combs shares gritty country voice at BVJ Thursday, 11:15 p.m.
With gritty, grizzled vocals, brazen songwriting talent and a dynamic live show, River House Artists/ Columbia Nashville’s artist Luke Combs stormed onto the country music landscape as a force to be reckoned with. The 27 year-old Asheville, North Carolina native released his critically-acclaimed debut album This One’s for You on June 2 which remains the largest selling debut country album to release in 2017. The album debuted No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and remained inside the Top 10 on the same chart since release. Combs’ debut platinum certified smash radio single “Hurricane” set country radio history topping both the Billboard Country Airplay chart and Mediabase chart for two consecutive weeks rendering Combs the first debut country artist to hold a multi-week No. 1 since Florida Georgia Line’s Cruise and the first new solo Country male artist to accomplish the feat since Blake Shelton with “Austin” in 2001. Combs made history once more when “When It Rains It Pours,” the goldcertified second single off
his debut project landed at No. 1 at two weeks on Country radio; the last debut male to achieve backto-back chart-toppers off a debut album was Sam Hunt. Combs’ third single from his widely acclaimed project, “One Number Away,” hit radio airwaves this year. In 2017, Combs earned nominations for CMT Awards Breakthrough Artist of the Year, CMA Award New Artist of the Year and MusicRow Breakthrough Artist/Writer of the Year. After college at Appalachian State, Combs, a true road warrior, built his avid fan base, developing his trademark through delivering rowdy, hold-nothing-back shows. By 2014 when Combs followed his calling to Nashville, Tennessee, he had an army of fans behind him, three self-released EPs and a set list full of songs that are true, authentic and demonstrate his signature modern throwback sound. In 2017, Combs has shared the stage with Brantley Gilbert on his Devil Don’t Sleep Tour and joined star-packed summer festival line-ups at CMA Music Fest, Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival and Windy City Smokeout.
Abrams continue family music tradition Thursday, 8:00 p.m.
It’s hard for John and James Abrams to recall a time in their young lives when they weren’t creating and playing music together. As fourth-generation musicians, The Abrams have already taken the family business to a whole new level with their recent signing to Warner Music Canada and the release of their major label debut selftitled album.
Still only in their mid20s, they have been touring their distinct country sound worldwide for over 16 years, have been featured on CMT, NBC, FOX, Cosmopolitan NPR, BBC and CBC, and are among the youngest performers to ever play the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Their major label debut single last year, “Fine” charted in the top 40 on country radio.

Dallas Smith skyrocketing to top Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
Hailing from British Columbia, Dallas Smith is skyrocketing to the very top of the country music scene. His 2012 debut album Jumped Right In generated five singles in the Canadian Hot 100, including the gold-selling title track, garnering five CCMA Award nominations and was nominated for Country Album of the Year at the 2013 JUNO Awards. Following a slew of sold-out tour dates with Florida Georgia Line and Bob Seger, Smith released 2013’s Tippin’ Point EP, making his debut in the U.S. and setting the bar high while representing Canadian country music’s cutting-edge sound. Co-written by Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard along with The Cadillac Three’s Jaren Johnston, “Tippin’ Point” set the record as the fastest Canadian country single to go gold in history. Additionally, Smith topped
SiriusXM’s The Highway Hot 45 Countdown and most recently added the title of platinum-selling country artist to his repertoire with the announcement that “Tippin’ Point” had been certified platinum. Amassing national appeal, Smith netted three 2014 CCMA Award nominations including Single, Album and Male Artist of the Year and is the first Canadian country artist to have eight singles reach the Top 10 at radio in Canada. Following a summer of notable festival dates, including an outstanding headline performance in front of 25,000 fans at the Boots And Hearts Music Festival, and a recordbreaking performance at the Craven Country Jamboree where he drew over 12,000 fans and shattered attendance records, Smith announced the release of his second full-length country album Lifted.

International artist Moskaluke at BVJ
Jess Moskaluke Saturday 5 p.m.
An internationally celebrated artist, Jess Moskaluke continues to dazzle the country music world with her infectious love of country music. Acclaimed as the first Canadian female country artist to have a song in the Top 5 since 2008 (Drive Me Away–#3), and the first female Canadian country artist since [her childhood idol] Shania Twain to achieve platinum single status (with “Cheap Wine and Cigarettes”) she has achieved not one, but three Top 10 hits with her respective singles, “Kiss Me Quiet”, “Take Me Home” and “Drive Me Away.”
4620-39 Street, Camrose
A multiple 2015 JUNO award nominee and 2017 JUNO winner for Country Album of the Year, Moskaluke is a 2017 SOCAN Award winner and the reigning three-time consecutive CCMA Award winner for Female Artist of the Year (2014, 2015, 2016)–the first resident of Saskatchewan in the history of the awards to achieve this title. A proud small town girl, when she first posted her music online, no one could have anticipated the bright future that lay ahead. Many years later with her growing fan base, she now has over 32 million views on YouTube to date. In 2016, Moskaluke had the #1 Most Played Song (“Take Me Home”) at Canadian Country Radio and was the top spun Canadian female artist for the second year in a row. Nominated for two 2017 CCMA Awards (Single of the Year and Female Artist of the Year) and performing on the show, Moskaluke is currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on a brand new album slated for release this fall. Jess performed at BVJ in 2013 at the Kick-Off Party.
Alberta’s Brandt back by demand Paul Brandt
Friday 7:30 p.m.
Paul Rennée Belobersycky is a Canadian country music artist, known professionally as Paul Brandt. Growing up in Airdrie and Calgary, he was a pediatric RN at the time of his big break. In 1996, he made his mark on the country music charts with the single “My Heart Has a History,” propelling him to international success and making him the first male Canadian country singer to reach the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot Country Songs
chart in the United States since Hank Snow in 1974. The first time Brandt sang in front of an audience was when he sang “Amazing Grace” at his high school. He attended Crescent Heights High School from 1987-90. Brandt’s first single, “My Heart Has a History” was a number one hit in Canada, as was his debut album, Calm Before The Storm. He followed up with the three hits “I Do” (which he wrote for his friend’s wedding), “I Meant to Do That” and “Take It from
Me.” Calm Before the Storm was certified Gold by the RIAA in 1997. Brandt’s second album, Outside the Frame, did not repeat the same success as Calm Before the Storm did. The album had some hit singles, most notably “A Little in Love” and “What’s Come Over You.” As an unsigned artist, Paul’s ground-breaking live acoustic album Small Towns and Big Dreams went on to win the CCMA Album of the Year. His label’s success has continued as the follow-up album This Time Around went on to win CCMA Album of the Year and a GMA Canada Covenant Award for the song “That’s What I Love About Jesus” (2005). This Time Around went platinum in Canada and also produced the hit songs “Leavin’”, featuring Keith Urban courtesy Capitol Records, and his remake of the trucker classic song “Convoy.” His last single/ video from the album was “Alberta Bound,” a tribute to the people and places of that province. Brandt has been a fan favourite at Big Valley Jamboree for many years.
Goodvin small town boy Saturday 3:30 p.m.
One of the benefits of growing up in a small town is learning to make your own entertainment. For Aaron Goodvin, from Spirit River that meant joining his family around the campfire for sing-alongs. At 12 years old, Aaron entered a singing contest at a local mall. Once he heard the crowd’s applause he knew performing was what he wanted to do. He learned to play guitar and started writing his own material and by 18 he was contributing songwriting cuts to other artists. He began making trips to Nashville to test the waters in country music’s Mecca. After signing with publishing powerhouse Warner Chappell Music, Aaron scored his first major-league contri-
bution on the track “Out Like That” on Luke Bryan’s multi-platinum album Crash My Party. Aaron continued to develop as a performer and eventually caught the attention of Johnny Reid. “I told Johnny that I just wanted to share my music with an audience,” said Aaron. “He’s taken me under his wing which shows you what kind of guy he is. He truly wants to help other artists.” Aaron has a natural ability to light up a stage, connect with his audience, and deliver a show-stopping performance. “I want to get out there and connect with people through my music. I’m a passionate guy who tries to write about real life things that mean something to a lot of people.”

Big Mike “Kixxsin” it up at BVJ Thursday-Sunday 1:30 a.m.
Mike Callan was born and raised in the small town of Williamsford, Ontario on a steady diet of country greats like Don Williams. He also found appeal in outsiders like Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings. Moving to Calgary as a teenager, he discovered and embraced
modern country heroes like Travis Tritt and Mark Chesnutt, while he taught himself how to play guitar. He made his stage debut at 15 years old and by age 16, was writing his own songs. The clever wit and charisma that are a part of his songs are an extension of his personality. With his strong traditional voice and
an imposing physical presence, Mike owns the stage when he steps on it. There is a great energy in his performance, administered with a nudge and a wink in the up tempo numbers, but he can deliver a ballad enough to persuade you that he might be the strong silent type, while you wipe away a tear.
