Giving and getting little Beckett the help he needs By Ron Pilger and Lori Larsen Josh and Rebekah Burnstad have been both overwhelmed and overjoyed with the remarkable support of people of Camrose, neighbouring area and beyond who have offered support to their family situation over the past couple of weeks. A social media campaign to attempt to raise funds to purchase a costly wheelchair for their two-year-old son, Beckett, got thrown into serious over-drive after The Camrose Booster staff members learned of a weekend bottle drive in the hamlet of Round Hill. The July 24th cover of The Camrose Booster was devoted to the story of Beckett Burnstad who, in his infancy, somehow managed to develop mysterious illness symptoms. The story explained how a diagnosis of Lymes Disease, plus coxsackievirus, was ultimately offered by a lab in Germany. While a complete cure may be elusive, help from a clinic in Port Moody, BC is being sought. The treatment program, which started last Thursday, is costly and time-consuming. In addition, a highly specialized wheelchair at a cost originally thought to be to $25,000 is also necessary in order to give young Beckett mobility, freedom and a solution to an increasingly curved spine. Almost the very moment the July 24th issue of the home team paper hit mailboxes, readers and a number of Camrose businesses threw

their support behind the Bottles for Beckett campaign. Norm Mayer, well known businessman and long-time community philanthropist, recalls being “instantly touched” by the cover story. “When I read the piece, I knew that I had to do anything I could to help this little guy. He needs every chance that we can offer to help him get better.” Norm initially made calls to other business associates thinking if he could convince four other business owners to contribute $5,000 each, they would instantly order the wheelchair and present it to the Burnstad family. “When that proposal didn’t pan out, I said to my son and business partner, James, let’s just make this happen ourselves!” Norm laughs, “It might mean we’ll each have to work a few more years, but we’ll feel better knowing we’re giving Beckett the fighting chance that he deserves.” Norm Mayer goes on to explain. “As it turned out the price of the wheelchair was reduced through a government subsidization program fast-tracking and a successful GoFundMe campaign, which meant the cost of the $17,500 wheelchair cost was covered. When I learned this news I informed the Burnstads that the Central Agencies Inc. donation should be used to cover the cost of the family’s numerous future trips and stays on the west coast. Sometimes all it takes is a village, or community, to rally together and support the needs of the residents. For Rebekah and Josh Burnstad the community responded tenfold. “My husband (Chad) saw the photo on the front cover of The Booster and said ‘We just have to do something’”, said Whistlestop co-owner Diana Charbonneau, noting that Chad said he took one look at the photo and his heart melted. True to his word Chad, with the help of Diana, arranged a Buckets for Beckett fundraiser held on Saturday, July 28. “All the proceeds from our customers and campers purchasing a bucket of golf balls all day Saturday went to the fund,” explained Diana. All total the initiative raised $1,000, which Diana and Chad joyfully presented to Rebekah and Josh. “It just feels good to be a part of this and the community,” said Diana. Colleen and Ryan Konowolyk, owner/operators of MR MIKES Steakhouse Casual (Camrose), became familiar with the Burnstad family through the restaurant’s Harvest Appreciation Barbecue promotion last

year, when Josh was nominated, through community votes, and won the contest. Noticing the previous published story, Colleen and Ryan realized they too had to do something. “We already had a tie to the family, in a sense,” said Colleen. “We knew there were a couple local bottle drives so we promoted a bottle drive in our parking lot on July 28 and also raised money with cash donations.” They offered a free appetizer to anyone donating to Beckett’s cause. “We ended up spending the day with the Burnstads on the Saturday of the bottle drive.” Despite previous commitments Colleen said her own children were insistent on staying and helping with the drive. “Our five-year-old son, Joel, said he wasn’t leaving until they collected all the recycling.” During the four hours of the bottle drive on July 28 they also raised $600 cash for the cause, from the restaurant’s customers. “Once the word was out, it was the people who made it happen,” said Colleen. The initiative to raise money in support of funding a motorized wheelchair for Beckett has spread like wildfire and has gripped the hearts of so many people who related to Beckett’s sweet smile in the photo. “People have been bringing in their bottle returns

ever since the picture ran in The Booster,” noted Universal Bottle Depot manager Grace Thorpe. “We don’t have totals as of yet. We took our one-ton truck over to MR MIKES for the bottle drive and it is completely full.” Grace said a horse trailer was also available at the bottle drive which was then taken out to the Campbell Family Reunion in Round Hill where the donations continued pouring in. “From what I heard the bottle drive that was held at the Round Hill School also went very well.” Donations to Bottles for Beckett are still coming in to the Bottle Depot. “We will bring in extra staff to process the one-ton truck and eventually the horse trailer and then have a grand total from the drive. The account is still open and so it continues to come in from individuals as well as businesses. It has really taken off,” said Thorpe. The Burnstads are a humble rural family who have suddenly, but graciously, found themselves amidst a sea of generosity and overwhelming kindness, all in the name of one little boy named Beckett, who, like every other little boy his age, just wants to live the best life he can.

Camrose is #11 in a ranking of best cities to live in Canada. Who says? MoneySense, a Canadian magazine, in a July 31 article. Wow! Take a bow, Camrose! Pause here for loud cheers. And take a quick look around for things you appreciate about living in this East Central Alberta part of Canada. So, how did MoneySense decide Camrose was #11 of

best cities to live in Canada? The July 31 article by Claire Brownell said, “Ranking 415 Canadian cities from Salt Spring Island, B.C. to Conception Bay South, Nfld. isn’t easy. Some might even say it’s impossible. While it’s true our ranking is unable to capture the beauty of the sunsets or the passion of the local hockey team’s fans, we think a lot of the things that make a city a great place to live can be measured.” The magazine ranked how each of 415 Canadian cities measured up in ten categories. They weighted each category out of 100 total points, giving the most points to categories they believed are most important to average people. The categories were: Wealth and economy (20 points) based on average household income, average household net worth and regional employment rates. Affordability (20 points) based on average household discretionary income, average value of prime real estate, home price to income level, rent affordability and five-year rent growth. Access to health care (11 points) based on number of physicians and doctor offices, nearby hospitals, and wait times regionally and provincially for various procedures. Weather (10 points) based on annual days with rain or snow, annual days with a low above 0 C and annual days with a high above 20 C. Commute (10 points) based on percentage of people who can walk, cycle or use public transit to get to work. Taxes (seven points) based on provincial income tax, provincial sales tax, local property tax rate and dollar amount paid for property tax. Crime (seven points) based on crime rate per 100,000 people, severity of crimes, and five-year change in crime rate. Population growth (six points) based on five-year population growth. Culture and community (five points) based on number of people working in arts, culture and recreation and number of people engaged in the community. Amenities (four points) such as having a college, movie theatre, airport within reasonable driving distance and number of restaurants and bars. ***

So what were some of Camrose’s ratings? Here are stats that MoneySense provided in the much-condensed thumbnail summary of Camrose. Population: 19,488, estimated unemployment rate: 3.9 per cent, median household income: $61,873, average household net worth: $519,846, property tax: 74.9 per cent (this rating means that property taxes in Camrose are lower than those of about three-quarters of the 415 cities), total annual days above 20 C: 83, crime rate per 100,000: 9,520, family doctors per 100,000: 99. I was interested to see that, with about 11 per cent of Canada’s population, Alberta has four cities among the top 12: 1. Oakville, Ontario; 2. Ottawa, Ontario; 3. Russell Township, Ontario; 4. Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec; 5. Lacombe, Alberta; 6. Milton, Ontario; 7. Canmore, Alberta; 8. Westmount, Quebec; 9. Saint-Lambert, Quebec; 10. Halton Hills, Ontario; 11. Camrose, Alberta; 12. Red Deer, Alberta. I was also interested to notice that, of the 12 top-rated cities, seven had populations between about 14,000 and 27,000, big enough for amenities and convenience, but not so big as to be unaffordable or to have severe crime or traffic problems. You can quibble about whether MoneySense identified the ten most important factors to make a city a good place to live, or whether you’d give the factors the same weighting as MoneySense did, but it’s a start. And each city’s rating was based on the same measurable criteria. Camrose can take pride to rank 11th out of 415. Look around. What do you appreciate most? And what could make it even better? ***

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. 2. 3. 4.

To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water colour. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants. This year’s UDF program began July 26, 2018, starting with Zone A (in Area 1) and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discolouration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If a discolouration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Ashton Ford at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428.

Still more facts wanted! (Re Snider’s “lack of facts” July 17 letter). Your readers might want to add some additional facts, and/or clarification to the aforementioned letter regarding what the Harper and Trudeau governments have accomplished regarding oil pipelines. (We all know most of MP Sorenson’s columns tend to focus on criticizing the Liberals...so that is a whole different issue). 1. Snider suggested that under the Harper Conservative government (200615) “four major pipelines were built...totalling over 8,000 km” and that Harper “approved two more major pipelines.” That makes six pipelines that Harper built and/or approved...not the zero that Trudeau suggested. The Financial Post (Kevin Libin; Dec. 7, 2017) indicated that: a) that under Harper, the Non- XL version of the Keystone, from Alberta to Nebraska was approved in 2006, and completed in 2010. b) The Alberta Clipper, to Wisconsin was approved in 2008 and active in 2010. c) The change-over in Line 9 taking oil west to east was also approved and activated under Harper. These three, according to the Financial Post, added 1.25

million barrels a day in pipeline capacity, under Harper. 2. Global News (Breakenridge; Newstalk 770) also lists the Kinder Morgan Anchor Loop being approved and constructed under Harper. So that comes to four pipelines built under Harper. 3. The Liberals have approved two pipeline upgrades. But, Trudeau opposed (“ultimately killed”) the Northern Gateway Pipeline (approved by Harper in June 2014). 4. After BC protests effectively stopped Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Pipeline, Trudeau offered to buy-out that pipeline for $4.5 billion. Since no alternative buyer could be found by the July 22 deadline, Kinder Morgan will now take Trudeau’s offer to the Shareholders. It looks like the taxpayer will be “on the hook” for the initial $4.5 billion, plus roughly $7.4 billion in construction costs (or more, because final costs for these sorts of projects often double). Chances are this Pipeline is still in for a costly drawn-out battle, due the unrelenting opposition against it. Marion Leithead, Bawlf Right moves

We all expect that we have this right. We all do believe that we have the right to our own beliefs, our own sexual preference, and the right to speak our mind. Yet, over the years, I do believe we have lost some of our rights without most of us even noticing. It is like this, the frog who jumped into a pot of water. The smart cook turned the stove up little bit by little bit. Before the frog knew it, he was totally cooked. In 2015, Sandra Kim who was not in politics at the time wrote an innocent post expressing her personal beliefs about how she viewed

Homosexuality and homosexual marriage. She made it clear that she had nothing against these people but she personally did not agree with their lifestyle. Now, if she was just a regular mother, the NDP would not have cared what the world she said. The deputy premier would never have said what she said about this rather unimportant incident which happened in 2015 if she was just another unimportant mother. She is running to be an UCP candidate. This changed her to be a threat to this government. She indicated that what Sandra had stated was extreme. What makes Jewish, Muslim, and Christian views extreme? Since the NDP party is running a distant second in the latest Main Street polls, these people have to try to paint the UCP as a bunch of extreme racist bigots. They are trying to draw attention from the pain that they caused when the people in the oil patch lost their jobs. When companies could not afford the carbon tax burden, which they dumped on them. People have been hurt by their social policies which never have worked in other provinces as well in other countries in this world. Jason Kenny is the only leader who is suited to be our next premier in 2019. We will have to wait and see what the voter here in Alberta will do? I must say that if the voter returns this government back into governing this province, one day the average voter will wake up and realize that our right of freedom of speech will be a thing of the past. I think this is an amazing art form and it is great to bring this to Camrose.” This is a free concert for the community that will give a glimpse into some of the incredible acts that will be coming to the community at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre this fall to next spring. “The show features a motley group of campers in search of adventure and thrills that decide to hitch up their trailer to set out on a journey,” said organizer Nick Beach. “They are travelling every major centre from east to west with five performers and a musician who will take you on a coast-tocoast trip in 50 minutes. To present this show, they will literally trek across Canada

throughout the summer of 2018.” They will bring some of the amazing tricks and acts that you usually see indoors, to the outdoor show. “You can see some of these performances and pay a lot of money. We are offering this show for free and we want to see thousands of people take advantage of this show in Camrose. If you haven’t seen this type of show before, this is your chance,” said Nick. “They are travelling across Canada and sharing their camping-like experiences as they go,” added Tanya Pattullo, patron services manager. It might be a little later, but we didn’t want the sun to be beaming down on the show when they have lights. Right from the start, the City has been behind us.” The Canadian performance group developed a show entitled Truck Stop, which transforms into a camping trip to the Recreation Centre on Saturday, Aug. 11. Action begins at 8:30 p.m. (to accommodate the light show when it gets darker). It is a family event that lasts about an hour in

For Aaron, from Spirit River, that meant joining his fam-

ily around the campfire for sing-alongs. At 12 years old, Aaron entered a singing contest at a local mall. Once he heard the crowd’s applause he knew performing was what he wanted to do. He learned to play guitar and started writing his own material and by 18 he was contributing songwriting cuts to other artists. Over the years, Aaron built a local reputation as a dynamic performer with a rock solid portfolio of songs. He began making trips to Nashville to test the waters in country music’s Mecca. After signing with publishing powerhouse Warner Chappell Music, Aaron scored his first major-league contribution on the track “Out Like That” on Luke Bryan’s multi-platinum album Crash My Party.

Aaron continued to develop as a performer and eventually caught the attention of Johnny Reid. “I told Johnny that I just wanted to share my music with an audience,” said Aaron. “He’s taken me under his wing which shows you what kind of guy he is. He truly wants to help other artists.” Aaron’s versatility and passion for writing and performing is second to none. He has a natural ability to light up a stage, connect with his audience, and deliver a show-stopping performance, whether it’s a small intimate gathering or a crowd of thousands. “I want to get out there and connect with people through my music. I’m a passionate guy, who tries to write about real life things that mean something to a lot of people.”

Dueling pianos return for show By Murray Green

You can feel the heat when the dueling pianos compete during a Burn ’N’ Mahn concert. The Burn ’N’ Mahn dueling piano show with Brian Burn and Jamie Mahn is a live, high energy baby grand piano show. The duo covers a wide range of music from the 1920s to current top 40 hits. The musicians are returning for a local concert at the Camrose Resort Casino on Friday, Aug. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Many have listened to Burn before without realizing it. He has been playing

professionally for more than 30 years. Burn has been part of several bands that have been a who’s who at the Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose. He has played with Julian Austin, Aaron Lines, Chris Cummings, Gil Grand, Beverly Mahood, Lace, Jason McCoy, Gord Bamford, Dianne Chase, Clayton Bellamy, Jake Mathews and Charlie Major. Burns has been nominated for the Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) keyboard player of the year four times and won CCMA back-up band of the year twice with the Austina-

tors in 1999 and 2000. He partnered with Jamie Mahn in 2012 for Burn ’N’ Mahn. Mahn made his debut performance at the age of four. He started singing at an Oktoberfest Celebration. His first impromptu piano show came at age 12 at the Holiday Inn, Niagara, New York, where he entertained snowbound guests by playing their many requests. Jamie spent his teenage years playing guitar, keyboard, trumpet, bass and sax, gaining experience with his father’s rock and roll band performing at weddings, charity functions and dances.

I experienced a wonderfully simple moment on our first week of summer. We were camped on a beach peninsula, halfway through a week long canoe trip. My children were playing by the hammock, taking turns throwing sandals at whichever sibling was in the hammock and laughing like crazy. My husband was tending to the fire, the lake behind him. I looked down and saw an inchworm creeping its way up my shoulder. I helped it to the ground and continued stirring the gravy for our back country Shepherd’s Pie supper. I smiled and thought to myself in a most contented way, “This is the life.” My four-year-old and I had spent 10 minutes that morning inspecting an inchworm who had befriended him. I helped it onto his little hand, and we marveled at its motions and colours (I didn’t realize some are brown, yellow and black!). It was simple and wonderful to see. Another morning, we were sitting at the picnic table eating our oatmeal and saw something large moving across the water. We took a closer look and got to see a moose calf on its mom’s back, swimming across the bay. Then at another camp, we watched in awe as two deer and their two speckled fawns walked through our campsite, only 10 metres away. We spent eight days and seven nights paddling through wilderness, our three young children enjoying the trip with us. We knew that we had everything we needed for a week with us in the canoe. If we wanted water, we pumped it. If we wanted shelter, we set up a tent and tarp. We tried out new recipes, and I spent three days with the dehydrator running at home before the trip. Our favourite meal was hamburger soup and bannock cooked over the fire. The first bite was like eating a bun fresh from the oven. My children asked why I do most of the cooking at home, but dad does most of the cooking on canoe trips. I had never really thought before about our roles on canoe trips, because we fell into them naturally. My husband: cooking, fire making, tarp set up. Myself: laying out the sleeping pads and sleeping bags in the tent, pumping water. We set up the tent together and all of us wash the dishes. I responded that I wasn’t sure why he did the cooking other than he was better with the stove, but it sure was wonderful. We loved the lack of distractions and being free from technology. We inspected nature together, raced barefoot down beaches, and swung in the hammock without any time limits. Perhaps what I love most about our canoe adventures is the extended time outdoors. We are only in the tent to sleep, or during the one thunderstorm when we piled in with intentions of playing Uno. Instead, we listed in awe to the thunder booming overhead, feeling it deep inside. I crave the simple. Now I find myself considering day trip possibilities for the summer. While we will definitely pack up for beach days and biking days, the truth is my kids are perfectly content to play with toys until noon in their pajamas, and then run around in the sprinkler or at a playground in the afternoon. They need low key experiences, after a season of having to be places at certain times. We crave simple, whether we realize it or not. Spending time outside has been shown to boost mental health, improve short-term memory, and have a destressing effect. Uncomplicated, down-to-earth time, especially outdoors, just feels good. This summer, seek out moments that leave you with a contented smile on your face—with or without the inchworm.

Seniors hunting licence costs reduced By Lori Larsen

The Alberta government just announced a reduction in prices for hunting licences for seniors beginning the fall of this year. “I want seniors in Wetaskiwin and Camrose to know that I’m on their side,” said MLA for We t a s k i w i n - C a m r o s e Bruce Hinkley. “Hunting is a long-standing tradition in our province. For seniors living on fixed incomes, the cost of a hunting licence should not be the barrier that keeps you from enjoying hunting.” As a result of the reduced prices, Alberta will have one of the lowestcost licences in Canada for seniors to hunt game birds and white-tailed deer. “Not only is hunting part of Alberta’s cultural heritage; it’s a major economic driver and a wonderful pastime for thousands of Albertans,” remarked minister of environment and parks Shannon Phillips. “This year, our government is proud to offer new elk- and deer-hunting opportunities, strengthen existing mentorship programs for youth, and support seniors living on fixed incomes by reducing the cost of hunting licences.” Along with the lower licence prices, the Alberta government is also proposing a mentorship program with the Alberta Hunter Education Instructors’ Association (AHEIA) and seniors in an effort to encourage seniors with hunting background and experience to mentor younger hunters. “Supporting highquality mentorship programs helps lifelong hunters connect and share their skills with youth who are interested in hunting but don’t know where to start,” said president, Alberta Hunter Education Instructors’ Association Robert Gruszecki. “As Alberta’s leader in providing conservation and hunter education programs, AHEIA is excited to expand our partnership with the government to support the next generation of hunters.” Hunting continues to be a growing sport in Alberta with over 120,000 Albertans purchasing a hunting licence last year alone. Ethical, legal sport hunting plays an important role in managing Alberta’s wildlife and funding from licences provides opportunities to improve conservation efforts.

Reading opens up worlds that may otherwise be unknown, it builds understanding and fosters learning, growth and imagination. Reading University (RU) is an indispensable community leadership initiative of the Battle River Community Foundation that involves a four-week long summer program designed to increase literacy skills in Grade 2 and 3 students who have not yet reached their grade levels of reading. The process involved with the program begins by first identifying a need, then determining the best people and organizations to deal with the need and finally delivering the financial support. The program first began in Camrose in 2009 and has seen approximately 600 students participate. In 2010, the program extended to include Camrose and Tofield students then in 2013-15 was offered in Camrose and Killam. In 2016, Reading University campuses were made available in Camrose, Tofield and Killam allowing more accessibility for students within BRSD. This year Reading University proudly honoured 75 students, all total, from Camrose, Tofield and Killam campuses at two separate graduation ceremonies held on July 27 at the Faith and Life Chapel at University of Alberta Augustana campus. With smiles as broad as their newly expanded minds, the graduates of the Reading University Summer Program proudly took to the podium to accept their certificates among family, teachers, educational aids, special guests and friends. Master of ceremonies and Battle River Community Foundation past chairman Blain Fowler opened the formal ceremony by welcoming all attendees. “Strong sup-

dents and our partners is indicated by your attendance here today.” Fowler acknowledged the continual support of the organizational partners for the University Reading program consisting of Battle River School Division (BRSD), University of Alberta Augustana campus and Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF). “Battle River School Division takes the responsibility for designing the educational program, approving and paying the staff, providing the transportation and inviting the appropriate children to participate in the program,” said Fowler. “The University provides classroom space, nutritional meals and snacks for our students as well as lunch time supervisors,” continued Fowler. “Generally speaking, the role of the Community Foundation is to provide the conduit to connect people who can satisfy a need, with the people who are willing and able to provide the necessary financial support to get the job done. In this case, The School Division and the Community Foundation each have agreed to underwrite Reading University on a 50–50 basis. “What you may not appreciate, and I hope you will after you see the results, is that the cost of Reading University is almost $2,000 per student or $100 per day for each student in the program,” noted Fowler. “With seventy-five students benefiting from Reading University this year, the total cost will be close to $150,000. Generous donors have made it possible for the foundation to contribute its share of roughly $75,000.” Funds contributed through the foundation cover the entire cost of meals and snacks, field trips and admissions, classroom sup-

items such as backpacks, t-shirts and a selection of books that students can keep at the conclusion of the program. The intention is that Reading University is offered to all participants absolutely free of charge. About half of the foundation’s $75,000 share is covered by distributions from the earnings of a number of endowments that have been established to support childhood literacy and from the Community Fund. The other half of the commitment of the foundation has come from over seventy local individuals, organizations and companies that have stepped-up to cover the shortfall. “This broad demonstration of generosity from the community,” said Fowler with a catch in his voice, “makes Reading University possible and is very gratifying to everyone involved with the program. We live in a wonderful community!”

On behalf of the University of Alberta Augusta Campus vice-dean Dr. Kim Misfeldt welcomed all guests to Augustana and congratulated the graduates. “Reading University is truly a special program. One where parents, generous community members, Battle River School Division and Augustana campus of the University of Alberta all come together to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people.” Misfeldt thanked family members of the students and the Reading University staff and volunteers. “Clearly you know literacy is a validation for lifelong learning, for career success, personal satisfaction and for building a meaningful life.” Dr. Misfeldt revealed how her love for reading has influenced her life in positive ways. “I have discovered that when I read a book I am never all by myself. In books I meet all kinds of interesting people from the past or future, from places near or far away, real people and totally imaginary people. People who think like me and people who’s ideas beliefs and experiences are very different from my own. Reading takes me everywhere, literally all over the world–at least in my imagination. “Reading is not only fun it is one of the most important ways of helping us learn and by being a part of Reading University, becoming a better reader and by learning to enjoy reading all of you are starting on an exciting journey, a journey which you can dream any dream and eventually become anything you want to be.” Misfeldt encouraged the graduates to continue visiting Augustana to enjoy the variety of activities held at the campus. “I also hope that you will return in 10-11-12 years and study for a university degree. “You have proven to all

of us and also to yourselves that you are smart, strong, talented and you belong some day at a place like Augustana.” In greetings on behalf of BRSD, assistant superintendent Shan Jorgenson-Adam recognized the hard work of the graduates. “Congratulations to our students, our graduates, this has been a busy month for you. You have had some great experiences, made new friends and learned new skills.” She related the joy that reading can bring to a person’s life. “Reading opens you up to a whole new world of possibilities. It allows you to visit new places, meet new people and learn new things. It helps you to imagine, create, understand, improve, relax and grow.” Jorgenson-Adam impressed upon the graduates the importance of remembering and thanking the people that supported them throughout their Reading University journey. “Remember who supported you–your family, Reading University teachers, educational assistants, Augustana staff, Camrose Pubic Library staff, custodians, bus drivers and your summer program’s principal. “As you go to enjoy the last half of summer vacation be proud of all the hard work you have done and continue to read and have fun.” After the formal ceremonies, the group of wellbehaved, dressed in their finery, young hopeful graduates individually walked across the floor to the podium and received handshakes and their certificates from their teachers, educational aids and Dr. Misfeldt to thundering applause, hoots and hollers and an occasional tear or two. On July 27, during the Reading University Summer Program morning graduation ceremony, University of Alberta Augustana campus vice-dean Dr. Misfeldt presented Blain Fowler with the Lois Aspenes Award, in recognition of his significant contributions as an alumnus to the life of Augustana. “Blain is involved in various community projects including Reading University and Battle River Community Foundation,” remarked Dr. Misfeldt. “He was instrumental

in the creation of Reading University and has supported it every year since its beginnings in 2009.” Reading from a quote passed along by University of Alberta Augustana dean Allen Berger, Misfeldt said. “Blain’s activism and vision within the Camrose community has helped strengthen our campus and advanced philanthropic interest in Augustana and connected us to important community priorities. He helped advance community service learning and raised aspirations of youth to someday study at universi-

ty. Blain is a wonderful role model of servant leadership a value that is embedded in the Augustana mission.” Also recognizing Blain’s tireless work in maintaining the success and vitality of Reading University, Battle River School Division assistant superintendent– learning Shan JorgensonAdam congratulated Blain on being the recipient of the Lois Aspenes Award. “Mr. Fowler knows how important it is to be a good reader and he believes all children deserve a chance to become good readers, consequently he asked our school division to join with him to start Reading University on campus. “Mr. Fowler has been a huge part of Reading University over the past 10 years. He helps raise money, register students, provides annual field trips to visit his planes at the Camrose Airport and volunteers to be the emcee for these wonderful ceremonies. And I know his reward is that every student who participates in Reading University becomes a good reader.” In a nature befitting Blain’s passion for Reading University and the children the program touches he graciously accepted the award pointing out that the program is the result of a dedicated team that truly deserves the credit.

Camrose ranked 11th place out of Canada’s Top 25 Places to Live 2018, according to the Canadian magazine MoneySense article released on July 31. Rankings for 415 cities across Canada were based on 10 categories with each category given a certain amount of points out of a total 100. The categories and corresponding points included: wealth and economy (20 points), affordability (20 points), population growth (six points), taxes (seven points), commute (10 points), crime (seven points), weather (10 points), access to health care (11 points)and amenities and culture (nine points). Old-style Nash turns heads on city streets By Murray Green

Betty Clark, from Red Deer Lake (south of Bashaw), owns a 1902 Nash Rambler Model C vehicle that she loves to drive to around with on sunny days. “I did a little research on my car and have the papers. I believe it was made available on one of its anniversaries. It is not an original, but a replica. I know that for sure,” said Betty. The Rambler was introduced in February 1902. It had a single cylinder six horsepower motor with a bore of 4.5 and strong of six inches. The car weighed 1,100 pounds and had a selling price of $750 when it was new. A replica of the classic was built in 1960 by the Gas Light Motors Company near Detroit. The kits were available for about $1,495. It was built with a modern air-cooled single-cylinder engine of four horsepower (3.0 kW). The vehicle has a 77-inch (2,000 mm) wheelbase, and weighed 640 lb (290 kg). “The car was made in the United States, but went to Saskatchewan when a fellow bought it for advertising purposes. His brother had it in his back yard for years and years. It was in pieces,” explained Betty. There are very few survivors, with only four originals being identified. The car reflects its original components wood body, floor-mat, fittings and all tools. “One day I walked by it and said to him oh my goodness, what is that? He said it is for sale if I want it and I told him it’s sold,” recalled Betty. The Chicago based Rambler Company was owned and operated by Thomas B. Jeffery and R. Philip Gormully. Like many early automobile manufacturers, their specialty had been in the manufacturing of bicycles. “Some school students in Calgary put it together for him, so when I got it the wheels were powder coated and the four lamps were ready to be painted. I painted it,” added Betty. “I have a couple of other old

cars, a Lincoln and Jaeger, and I like to see the legacy of old things kept alive and it shows how people lived.” Rambler (English for Wanderer) was a car brand from 1897 to 1914. The successor was Nash Motors and then the American Motors Corporation, from 1954 to 1969. “Besides painting it, a friend of mine fixed up the motor, so I could drive it in parades. I own a campground, so I drive kids around the campsites with it,” she said, who also displays her work in the Bashaw Art Show. The Rambler Company was one of the very first automobile producers with their first automobile produced in 1897. Thomas Jeffery and his son Charles were responsible for the inspiration and creation of the Rambler automobile. “Every parade I’ve been in, I’ve won a ribbon of some sort.” The first Rambler was

a single-cylinder vehicle with wire-spoke wheels that did not receive much attention from the public. A year later Charles had created two more machines, both still passing mostly unnoticed from the motoring community. In 1900, the Jefferys brought their creations to the Chicago and New York auto show where they finally received attention. Gormully had since passed away so the Jeffery’s sold their bicycling business to the American Bicycle Company to focus on the production of automobiles. The 1902 Rambler Model C Runabout was truly a horseless carriage, with its design inspired from the carriages of its day. The 1902 Model C did not have a steering wheel; rather a steering lever was used to point the vehicle in the intended direction. Rambler experimented with such early technical innovations as a steer-

ing wheel (steering sticks were common at the time), but it was decided that this was too advanced for the audience at the time, and so the first Rambler was delivered with a

steering column. Rambler had many new equipment details and was also the first car that was brought out with a spare wheel (rim and tires).

Province changes plans on waste water treatment plant By Lori Larsen

The Camrose Wastewater Treatment Plant (WTP) project has hit what may be a costly snag, as a result of new design requirements now being mandated by the provincial government. The original project for the upgrade to the WTP was budgeted for $40 million, but could now reach closer to $65 million. In 2012, the province approved a 10 year operating license for the City of Camrose. “The license allowed the City to operate our current lagoon based wastewater treatment plant, which isn’t designed to remove un-ionzed ammonia and phosphorus,” said City manager Malcolm Boyd. He went on to explain that the current license does not contain any limits on either ammonia or phosphorus. Around 2012, the federal government enacted WSER (Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations) regulating the discharge of treated wastewater back into the natural environment. The City hired consultants, prior to 2012, to study the Battle River Basin and the impact of what the city was doing in the way of wastewater treatment on the basin. “The resulting report was used to determine constraints for chemicals such as ammonia and phosphorus and formed part of the license agreement for the

planned upgrades,” said Boyd. During this same time period, the City of Camrose reached a population equivalent of 20,000 (including industry), putting the City into a new category for the level of wastewater treatment required by the provincial regulators. Aware of the new status of the City, administration began plans to upgrade the WTP to comply with WSER guidelines and the conditions of their 2012 provincial license. The ultimate design would reduce key nutrient emissions by 80 to 90 per cent. Concer ned the upgrades may not satisfy the provincial regulations, Boyd and City of Camrose engineering services director Jeremy Enarson, met with government officials responsible in 2015 and outlined the City’s intent. A letter received back, in response to the meeting, had administration believing that they were headed in the right direction in terms of design criteria. At the end of 2017, the City submitted a preliminary design for the new WTP to the province for approval and received a letter back from the province, indicating the design would not meet the required limitations. At around this same time the City was informed that it was currently out of compliance with the Environmental Protection Enhancement

This basically puts us back to square one in terms of design and will significantly increase both the future capital and operating costs.” Boyd noted that despite not seeing any adverse affects on the Battle River watershed, with the present operation of the wastewater treatment plant, continued communication between the City and the provincial government indicates that much higher levels of waste water treatment will be required.

The Armena Royals and Leduc Milleteers forced a third game of the Powerline Baseball League finals. When the dust settled, Armena scored three runs in the first and fourth innings to pull out an 8-5 victory. However, it wasn’t easy. Leduc put a scare into the Royals with a five run inning of their own in the fifth inning. Doug Morris pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on eight hits and a walk, while striking out five. It was the Royals second championship win in the last four seasons. Rosalind won it last year. Armena led the regular season standings from the beginning to the end and capped it off with a title. Leduc defeated the Royals 8-5 in the first game, but Armena won 6-4 in the second game on July 26 to force a third and deciding contest on July 31. Armena scored two runs in the seventh inning to break the tie and win game two. Pitcher Lyndon Galvin started the game, but it was reliever Morris who picked up the win by going two innings of shut out ball, while walking only one batter. Leduc won the opening contest in the strength of Kirk Smith’s strong pitching that included 11 strikeouts. The Powerline Baseball League defeated the Battle River Baseball League 15-8 in the annual all-star classic on July 29 in Camrose. Armena’s Luke Ryan was named the MVP after going three for four with two doubles and four runs batted in.

PERMANENT FULL-TIME CRISIS INTERVENTION WORKER This position involves shift work and is 40 hours/week. Kodiaks add York to hockey coaching staff By Murray Green

Former Camrose Kodiaks goalie Allen York will be the goaltending coach for the junior team in 2018-19. York works with ATC Goaltending and that is who the Kodiaks have been associated with for a number of years. Jamie Mccaig was the former coach for a number of years. The former Kodiak goalie played in the National Hockey League for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Kodiaks head coach and general manager Boris Rybalka was grateful about the news. “We are excited to have an alumni now work with our goaltenders. Allen has played in the NHL and he knows what it takes to get to the next level. I have talked to Allen and he is committed to the Kodiak program and I am very excited that he is!” Allen was born in Wetaskiwin and the position brings him closer to home. New trainer

The Camrose Kodiaks will open the exhibition season with a home tournament against Drayton Valley on Aug. 29. They take on Sherwood Park the next night before hosting the Fort McMurray Oil Barons on Aug. 31. Camrose hosts Spruce Grove on Sept. 4, visit the same team on Sept. 5 and then host Kindersley on Sept. 8 to conclude the preseason. The Kodiaks open the Alberta Junior Hockey League regular season at home with two games. They tangle with Okotoks on Sept. 14 and meet the Drumheller Dragons on Sept. 15 in the Encana Arena. Camrose will host the showcase series of games on Sept. 28 and 29.
