s i t s e v r a H ! y a w r e d n u By most accounts, for most crops, it’s been a less than ideal growing season. Mother Nature was not on her best behaviour for farm families for yet another year. The hope now, with crops ripe and ready for the bin, is for weather to be conducive to getting on the land and staying in the fields for long and productive days. Here’s to a safe harvest season, better than expected yields and continuous, trouble-free operations. Camrose and the people from the towns and villages in our trading area recognize the value of farmers to this area.

Letters to the Editor Where there’s fire there’s smoke: a gravity issue.
Maybe as you’re reading this the smoke has cleared. As I’m writing, the view from my window is obscured by heavy smoke. The red circle of sun tells me that somewhere above the smoke is a clear sky. I miss it. A week ago, family members drove from Calgary to Camrose to Edmonton through smoke all the way. The smoke is still here and getting thicker. Oppressive. I’ve seen people walking around with masks over their mouths and noses to protect them from air pollution. Shocking. This isn’t smoggy Los Angeles or London or Beijing, this is Alberta. Formerly sunny Alberta. ***
In the absence of being able to change what’s bothering me, I’m grasping at straws to improve my mood. Is there something to learn from this? Well, none of this is new, but the smoke has reminded me of a few old truths. 1. Nature is bigger than all of us. For thousands of years, we humans have been trying to bend nature to our will. With so many successes using technology to solve problems, we’re in danger of getting arrogant and thinking humanity can outwit Nature. Nope. Volcanoes, tsunamis, earthquakes and hurricanes are reminders. So are seasons and cycles and the knowledge that here on the prairies we are living on what once was glacier. Everything on the planet changes over time, at its own pace. We forget that at our peril. 2. There are Laws of Nature, but Nature cannot be regulated. Science is discovering more and more about the “laws” governing nature. Man-made laws and regulations are useful, but only to control or manage human activity. For example, it’s possible to help protect air quality by regulating industrial and vehicle emissions, or declaring no-smoking zones. But how do you regulate smoke from wildfires and volcanoes? Can’t be done. 3. Not all problems have solutions: Gravity Issues. Speaking of Laws of Nature, the Law of Gravity comes to mind. A friend had a new boss who, upon being told of a problem, asked, “Is that a gravity issue?” To explain, the boss asked two questions. “When you wake up in the morning, do you think about gravity?” “No.” “Does gravity affect you?” “Yes.” “Right. You don’t problem-solve gravity, you deal with it.” The smoke is a gravity issue. Until the wildfires are out, smoke is going to be in the air. We can’t declare the prairies a smoke-free zone or turn on a cosmic vacuum cleaner to suck it all away. We just have to deal with it. 3. The symptoms of a problem are often far from the source. Smoke from B.C. fires reached Manitoba. Smoke from California fires reached New York. A neighbour said, “Makes you realize it’s a small planet.” We often tackle symptoms we can see but sometimes the symptoms (smoke in Manitoba) are far from the source. The problem won’t truly be resolved until we deal with the source. 4. You can never predict the full impact. A tiny spark in the woods causes a small fire that turns into a wildfire that sends smoke across a continent. A tiny word spoken in love or in anger causes uplift or wound that lasts decades. 5. You can only deal with what’s within your power. Neither I nor anyone else could control the smoke. I dislike feeling helpless. Bet you do too. So what can we control? We cannot control other people. (I know because I’ve tried!) We cannot control all aspects of our environment. The things within our power are within us–our thoughts and emotions, and the words and actions that flow out of those. We could choose our response to the smoke. That’s it. We can at least do our best to have our words and actions be kind rather than cruel, and if possible be generative rather than limiting. Learning to be at peace with that, then learning to exercise the full power of that, might be life’s greatest challenge and greatest opportunity. ***

I am writing this letter today about the dangers of children playing in parking lots instead of playgrounds. As I have gone throughout our beautiful city, I have seen this problem repeated over and over again. I would like to take this time to warn parents and their children about the dangers of playing in such areas and not where it is safe, like our city’s beautiful playgrounds, before someone gets hurt. Please
don’t play in parking lots, kids! It’s not safe. Nathan Pinno, Camrose Statue destroyed
I find the actions of the City of Victoria in destroying the statue of Canada’s first Prime Minister to be appalling. John A. Macdonald is the Father of Canada, just as George Washington is of the United States. Without Macdonald there simply would not have been a Canada. Macdonald convinced the leaders of the leaders of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island to widen their vision to one nation from coast to coast. He dominated the three conferences proceeding Confederation and was largely responsible for the compromises that are found in our constitution. As the first Prime Minister he absorbed Rupert’s
Land a.k.a. the Northwest Territories, formed Manitoba as our fifth province, brought British Columbia and Prince Edward Island into our nation, formed the Northwest Mounted Police, later the RCMP, which made the settlement of Western Canada peaceful as opposed to the “Wild West” of the United States and built the CPR to unite the nation. He did not set up residential schools, but did allow them, but the relationship between the government and native peoples was peaceful; not violent as in the United States with its half century of Indian War. Macdonald is a proud part of our nation’s history and attempts to downgrade him to satisfy a few malcontents is to be opposed. Ron Williams, Camrose

Cyclists practice time trials near Miquelon Lake
By Murray Green
Some of the top cyclists in Alberta will be performing time trials near Miquelon Lake on Aug. 25 and 26. Councillor Cindy Trautman moved that “Camrose County council grant a special event permit for the 2018 Alberta Provincial Cycling Time Trials,” at the regular County meeting on Aug. 14. The Juventus Cycling Club requested permission to utilize specific roads

for the Alberta Provincial Time Trial Championships and Provincial Team Time Trial. “Their planned course starts at Hwy 623 at North Miquelon Road. The riders would follow this road to Hwy 833, where they would turn around. The riders would proceed west until a right turn on RR 205 and ride north for one km before turning around. The riders, now heading south would turn right back onto North Miquelon Road and follow the road to the intersec-
tion of Hwy 623,” explained Protective Services manager Mike Kuzio. On Saturday, the riders have an individual time trial where riders start at one minute intervals and ride over a pre-set course. There are no groups on the road and drafting with other riders is not allowed. The motoring public and residents would only see individual riders on the road with substantial spaces between riders. On Sunday, they will have a team time trial
where four riders start as a team at five minute intervals and ride over a pre-set course. The team of four riders start together, drafting single file and exchanging places to share the workload. The motoring public and residents would only see groups of four riders on the road with very substantial gaps between teams. They are expecting approximately 60 to 80 riders in various ability and age categories for the Saturday event and 15 teams for the Sunday event.
This event will run on Saturday starting at 4:30 p.m. with the last rider off the course by 7 p.m. On Sunday, the first team is off at 10 am. Riders should be complete by 12:30 p.m. “Juventus Cycling Club has been hosting cycling events in Alberta for over 15 years and we are confident this will be a safe event with minimal impact to the motoring public and residents,” said officer Kuzio.

The City of Camrose advised Camrose residents that effective Aug. 15, the City entered Stage 2 of the Water Shortage Response Plan (WSRP). “As the City now moves into Stage 2 of the WSRP, the City is imposing mandatory restrictions on outdoor water usage,” said City of Camrose engineering services director Jeremy Enarson. Homes and businesses in Camrose may only water their lawns between the hours of 6 to 9 a.m. and 7 to 11 p.m. There are no restrictions regarding the day of the week that someone can water their lawn. Along with this, the City will be asking restaurants to not automatically serve water to customers, but rather providing it upon request. For lodging services, the City is asking that they avoid changing bedding on a daily basis, unless that change is needed for health and safety reasons. “This marks the first time since the adoption of the WSRP that the City has ever needed to enact any heightened stage, so there may be a lot of questions from everyone,” noted Enarson. The WSRP outlines four levels of water conservation. Each stage is activated depending on the amount of water that is available within the City’s water source, Driedmeat Lake. “In an effort to both ensure that the citizens of Camrose can have their needs met, and to protect the local environment, each subsequent stage introduces additional restrictions to water use,” he explained. “Normally, the City of Camrose is in Stage 1 of the WSRP. tives, like the toilet rebate program.” As 2018 marks the first year where the levels in Driedmeat Lake have warranted this restriction, the City is planning to work with its residents and businesses in this change. “As an initial step, the City is planning to provide educational materials to help people understand the WSRP and what it means to be in Stage 2 of the plan. We are hoping that this will result in people changing their outdoor water use habits,” said Enarson. Repeated offences during the mandatory water restriction could result in fines, as outlined in the City’s Water Conservation / Water Use Bylaw. Howev-
er, the City is hoping that it does not need to resort to this action and is asking Camrose residents and businesses to do their part in limiting their outdoor water use. The City will continue to monitor the levels of Driedmeat Lake and will keep residents updated. Augustana workshops open to public
Locally Grown
By Lori Larsen
For the third year, University of Alberta Augusana Campus will be offering The Workshops in Building Capacity for Reconciliation program, open to all residents of Camrose and area who would like to learn more about the Indigenous peoples of Canada. The program will consist of six workshops (approximately one per month) from September this year to April 2019. The six topics include Reconciliation, Residential Schools and History, Indigenous Governance, Education, Language and Community, and Culture and Ceremony. All workshops will include in-depth exploration of the session’s topic for registered participants and some will include public presentation. “We are excited to include members of the public again this year,” said University of Alberta Augustana Campus Indigenous student services coordinator, Megan Caldwell. Each month different topics, linked to broad themes stemming from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final report and 94 Calls to Action will be examined. Invited speakers and presentations will provide context of historic and current experiences of Indigenous peoples both locally and across Canada. “Although the program is in part designed to explore how Augustana can be a leader in reconciliation at the post-secondary level, these workshops will also build participants’ personal capacities to engage in reconciliation work in both their jobs and their wider lives,” noted Caldwell. The workshop series begins with a session for registered participants only, featuring a lecture from Augustana history professor Daniel Sims, and working through the experiential KAIRSO Blanket Exercise. Other workshop highlights include the Edmonton Métis Dancers, an exploration of the history of Indian hospitals and an intimate workshop with the musical duo Twin Flames. Participants can register in the workshops program to become eligible to receive a co-curricular Certificate in Building Capacity for Reconciliation from Augustana, or without registering, simply attend the series of public talks that will be part of this program. Registration is limited and spaces for staff, faculty, students and com-

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING
Your lawn only needs an inch of water a week to stay healthy. This will help the development of deeper roots and a richer green color.
Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. 2. 3. 4.
To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water colour. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants. This year’s UDF program began July 26, 2018, starting with Zone A (in Area 1) and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discolouration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If a discolouration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Ashton Ford at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428. Celebrating 100 years of Ukrainian Orthodox faith in Canada By Lori Larsen
Establishing and maintaining a following for 100 years is a feat to celebrate. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church has been serving worshippers in Canada for 100 years and having first set up as the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church of Canada in 1918, was incorporated by the House of Commons in May 1929. The centenary events included a Sobor (general assembly of clergy and members of the church), on Aug. 9 to 12 in Saskatoon. While the members of the All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Camrose did not necessarily hold their own 100th celebration, because many attended the event in Saskatoon, they held prayer services on Aug. 8 during their annual pierogi making event. “The seed of the Orthodox Faith was sowed on the Canadian land, not by missionaries, but by simple peasants, who came from Ukraine and established themselves on the Canadian prairies,” explained All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Camrose) Father Slawomir. “Most of the first Ukrainian settlers came to Canada from Halychyna (Greek Catholics) and from Bukovyna (Orthodox Church). The Ukrai-

nian immigrants desired to have a church with Ukrainian character, which would be closer to the spiritual and cultural needs of the Ukrainian people. This led to the formation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canada. “The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada is an important religious element in Canada,” proclaimed Father Slawomir. “Where Ukrainian culture and heritage are fused with the Orthodox Christian faith to
form a living and vibrant tradition in Canada.” Today there are over 300 Ukrainian Orthodox churches in Canada, of which All Saints in Camrose is one, which has been in existence since 1962 when the congregation consisted of around 50 families. Today the church serves 16 devoted members in the congregation. “Services are held once a month,” said All Saints church society president Zenovia Lazariuk. “Our
congregation is open to everyone and welcomes anyone who wishes to attend, and probably 75 per cent of our services are in English with 25 per cent in Ukrainian. Those who don’t know the language but want to participate, will be able to understand. It is part of us meeting the needs of the community” The Church also has a very active Sunday School program with seven children learning, not only the spiritual culture of the church, but the importance of serving others. “For the last four years the Sunday School children have been collecting coins in a jar for the entire year then we send a cheque to give to the orphanage in the Ukraine with Bishop Hilarion (Edmonton and the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada) when he goes,” commented Lazariuk. “We have sent letters along with him, and one year we sent a little treasure box and small items from Camrose. It is a nice exchange between our children and those in the orphanages.” All Saints also gives back to the community through donations to the local food bank ( Camrose Neighbor Aid), preparing
Christmas hampers and welcoming new Camrosians (refugees) to the city and the congregation. “We sell pierogies, meatballs and cabbage rolls to help fund the upkeep and utility costs of the church,” said Lazariuk. Approximately five members of the congregation gather every Wednesday to make, anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000 pierogies. Some of which are sold that day and others kept in stock for the upcoming pierogi supper to be held on Sept. 29 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the church. “People call from all over Canada and ask about the Camrose pierogies,” smiled All Saints Father Slawomir. The pierogi supper serves on average 250 people, some who have been long time attendees, knowing there is nothing quite like the taste of a homemade pierogi, many who are proud to support the congregation of this little church located at 5402-53 Street. “We come together as a family and are there to support one another,” said Lazariuk. “Yes we get our spiritual needs met, but we also meet the needs of community. That is the part that I think is missing in society.”

Shoulder pulling stopped on County Aberhart Road By Murray Green
Camrose County has hit a stop sign on its shoulder pulling on the Aberhart Road. “After careful evaluation, council has decided to stop the Aberhart shoulder pull at Twp Rd 450 and instead, make needed repair to the trouble spots between Twp Rd 450 and Highway 609,” said County corporate services manager, Teresa Gratrix. “These repairs will be completed within a week and council will evaluate the need to do further repairs following harvest season.” “I would recommend that we do not widen this road at this time,” said Zach Mazure, assistant manager of public works. “If we try to widen the road, the shoulders will become soft.” The County completed 9.5 miles of shoulder pulling when construction came to a halt. Although shoulder pulling builds up the road, it also narrows it. “We were expecting to have a 10 metre wide road, but I want to know why some of the road is falling below that width,” asked Reeve Don Gregorwich, when he heard of the change.

Public works manager, Graham Backus explained the process and how it does narrow the road. “The project began May 14 and the foreman was instructed to pull the shoulders to 10 metres, as instructed by council. We started at the city limits (near the City of Camrose Regional Sanitary Landfill) and working south.” The construction started off smooth until it was discovered that the existing road was not 12 metres wide as thought, but in fact 10 or less, decreasing in width as the road goes south. Construction on Aberhart Road has stopped at Twp. Rd 450, about four miles from connecting with Highway 609. “We had a lot of ratepayers upset that this
road was going to be narrowed. We were told the road was too wide for grading purposes, now that turns out not to be true. The problem was, it wasn’t a 10 metre road to begin with. What we have done is take a good road and made it worse. I’m pretty disappointed,” said councillor Brian Willoughby. “My disappointment is that we didn’t get the right information in the first place,” said councillor, Cindy Trautman. “Now we have a road that is narrower than before. Some of it is good road, so it doesn’t all have to be done. Now we have some corrective issues from 450 north.” Graham explained that there are two sections close to Highway 609 that still need attention.

the semifinal and in the final the score was 0-0 at the half, so they were good games. We expected a little
more competition and if we went again I would hope to enter Tier 1 next time,” shared Owen. “Both the semifinal and final games were against teams from Minnesota.” Owen, who plays mostly centre attacking midfielder, is going into Grade 11 this fall and plays soccer three or four days a week up in Sherwood Park. “I like to set up plays and help teammates score goals. In one game, I had four assists and between 10 and 12 in the tournament. I didn’t score, which was a little frustrating for me.” The cultural exchange was exciting for Owen as well. “I met so many people from other countries and just meeting them and talking with them was a fun learning experience.” After we won the team took the trophy back to the dorm and filled it with ice cream because there was an ice cream machine. We put chocolate sauce on it and ate it, which was fun.” The Phoenix qualified for the provincial championship tournament in Calgary where they went on to win bronze medals. They tied their first two games and won their last two in the U17 Tier 2 division. They won 5-2 against Calgary in the bronze medal game and Owen scored the first goal. “I would like to play at the college level after high school.
maintained trails throughout the valley, the fantastic Recreation Centre and I am eagerly anticipating the completion of the pool renovations,” said Dave Van Reeuwyk. “I like triathlon and ironman training because you have to be self-motivated and I like being with similar people.” He captured the Ironman 70.3 Calgary event in the male 35 to 39 age category and first overall in just over four hours. Dave’s 1.9 kilometre swim time was 31:56, his 90km biking time was 2:04:57 and his 21.1km running was clocked at 1:22:58 for a total of 4:02:53. A total of 897 participants were entered with 312 women and 585 men on July 29. “You soon realize that you are capable of more than you think. It is good to reach those levels.” The rolling terrain and clear blue waters of Western Canada’s Rocky Mountains makes this race one of the most scenic on the circuit where athletes will experienced the new course, with the same beautiful, scenic qualities and safety as past years. The new course had a
single transition starting and ending in the Community of Auburn Bay. Athletes started with a 1.2-mile wave-start, one-loop swim from the beach of Auburn Bay Lake in south Calgary. A 56-mile bike course took cyclists east through Alberta’s spectacular ranch country, featuring views of the Rockies. The course was flat and very fast. The 13.1-mile run is an out-and-back paved run course through the beautiful Bow River Pathway. Although it’s relatively flat, the run course treated athletes to a challenging hill up the Bow River Valley. Ironman 70.3 Calgary had 30 qualifying age group slots for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France on Sept. 7 and 8, 2019. Three other local entries had a good day at the ironman event. Tiffany Wiedrick of Camrose 622 placed 21st in the female 25 to 29 category. Wade Elliott of Camrose 934 finished 17th in the male 55 to 59 event. Jane Yardley of Camrose 941 came in eighth in the women’s 40 to 44 age group.

The former Camrose Minor Soccer Association player and current Sherwood Park Phoenix team member went to the United States to compete against from some of the top U16 teams from around the world. “I played in Camrose from U4 to U12. I tried out in Sherwood Park the next year, but decided to go back to Camrose. Then the following year I went. The level of competition is higher and way faster and I really like that,” said Owen on his progression. “Everything is a lot quicker and more skilled. The season is longer and we have more practices.” Teams entered the USA Cup from Africa, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Canada and many from the host country. “This tournament was bigger and had more international clubs, so the coaches picked this one. We always cheer on the other team after the game and shake hands, but they don’t do that in the States. It was fun attending the opening ceremonies and the stands were full.” Owen’s team went undefeated throughout the tournament with 7-0, 9-0

Van Reeuwyk wins Calgary ironman event By Murray Green
The best way to get in shape and stay that way is to enter an ironman competition. It forces you to train all year. The ironman is a triathlon event consisting of swimming, biking and running, in that order at most competitions. “I was inspired by my brother-in-law, who had competed a small sprint distance triathlon in Fort MacLeod. That was six years ago and I watched him train and then the idea was to train together the following year and see where that would take us,” said Dave Van Reeuwyk of Camrose. “From the short distances we progressed into the Olympic standard events and then the ironman. I’ve entered about 30 events now. Last year, I entered the Calgary event and completed the course in three hours and 59 minutes (10th overall), actually faster than this year,” explained Dave, who won this year’s event on the adjusted course. “It was a different field this year and just over four hours. It was one of those surreal moments, to win an event like this. I just had

small improvements over last year, though running and biking in Camrose.” Dave trains mostly on his own now, but likes to join other local athletes as well. “I train every day and around my work schedule, so it is a structured training plan with one rest day a week.” He usually runs at the Camrose Composite High School grounds on Tuesday evenings with other local runners. “I’ve been in Camrose just over a year now. I lived in the Lethbridge area and took my criminal justice studies down there. I decid-
ed to take a year off after a few years and that turned into 12. I was a journeyman heavy duty mechanic and then figured out that I wanted to go back to criminal justice and that’s how I ended up in Camrose,” said Dave. “I like law enforcement and working in the highway vehicle inspections area.” The trail system was a big attraction to moving to Camrose. “Also a big shout out to the City of Camrose and the Camrose Ski Club. One of the biggest reasons I decided to make the move to Camrose was the beautiful and meticulously well

Learning Council celebrates 30 years
By Patrick Rivest, chair of Camrose and Area Adult Learning Council
Camrose and Area Adult Learning Council celebrated 30 years of service to Camrose and area this year. The Society of Camrose Further Education Council was incorporated as a society on Jan. 15, 1987, but it’s history actually goes back further than 1987. A grant from the provincial government was awarded on Oct. 29, 1973 to form a Local Further Education Council. This council was to operate in an advisory capacity, with the County of Camrose as the signing/financial authority. The council had a wide-ranging membership, including organizations, agencies and individuals offering courses and training to adults within the City and County of Camrose. CAFEC, had the responsibilities of increasing educational opportunities for adults; coordinating government agencies, nonprofit organizations, private and public schools, and individual trainers; providing advice about policy and regulatory matters; receiving and reviewing proposals for courses; and acting
as a resource for those individuals, groups and agencies wishing to implement a course of studies for adults residing within the County and City of Camrose. Between 1973 and 1987, CAFEC was very active in developing and promoting educational opportunities for adults in the city and county. In 1988, CAFEC obtained office and classroom space in the old CFCW site on Main Street. As well, the Camrose Adult Read and Write Program was developed independently of CAFEC. In 1990, Ellen Parker (coordinator) resigned and Kathleen Tennant took over until 2003. There was an impressive number of volunteers and agency representatives supporting these coordinators. In 1992, a Community Awareness night was held with the purpose of letting the general population know what courses were held and sponsored by which organizations and agencies. In 2007, Community Registration Night was created with a similar mandate, but also allowed people to register for courses held by the many participating organizations. It has been running ever since, with an
average annual attendance of over 1,000, supported by around 68 community agencies and businesses. By the year 2000, CAFEC had become The Society of Camrose and Area Community Adult Learning Council (CACL). In 2003, the Family Literacy program was created. In 2004, David Samm, and wife Helen, were hired as coordinators of CACL. On Oct. 14, 2009, Diane McLaren became the new executive director of CALC. overseeing the development of new programs and also a move in 2011 into new facilities in the old Gardner College residence site. Several years later she organized a move into our present site at the end of Main Street, Camrose. In 2011, the Camrose Adult Read and Write Program management committee and the Family Literacy advisory committee were amalgamated with the CALC board, making the new board responsible for all three programs You can learn more about our current programs and services by visiting our website www.camroselearning.com or calling 780-672-8754.

Katrina Shackel, Owner Bea’s Blooms
Absence makes the heart grow even fonder. Katrina Shackel left the floral design business several years ago. The highly experienced and professionally-educated floral designer, however, re-entered the trade when the ‘Frankie’s Flower Shop’ building came on the market. Katrina, her husband Troy, and their two young children, worked day and night for several weeks to refurbish the wonderful building to suit them. Katrina is well known for her creative and affordably-priced floral design work. The Olds College graduate has a knack for adding unique elements to her bouquets which make them stand out from the big box store designs. Using product that is flown in directly from suppliers, Katrina has re-established her well-earned reputation for wonderful flower arrangements for weddings, funerals and all types of special occasions. Her newly decorated shop, Bea’s Blooms, features an always impressive selection of flowers ready for pick-up or delivery. She also carries an inventory of high quality interior plants, everyday favourites – and others, chosen with care to be both unique and distinctive. 4871-51 St., Camrose Her store is 587-386-2327 conveniently located just off Main Street, directly across the street from Central Agencies.
Brooke Kroetsch, Stylist
Solo Salon Designs
It’s been an interesting journey – from a young girl who loved to coif her dolls’ hair to becoming a licensed stylist. “I’ve always loved to play with hair,” laughs Brooke. “When I was a little girl I would do my doll’s hair, then I was always changing-up my own style, plus I have been doing family and friends’ hair for years! I love making people feel good about their look. It inspires confidence and self-assurance. When you know you look good, you feel good.” Brooke grew up in Daysland and attended Marvel College straight out of high school. After graduation, she came back home and apprenticed with Anne, owner of Solo Salon Designs. She liked working with Anne so much that she stayed at the salon. “Learning from Anne has been invaluable for me in gaining confidence and experience as a stylist, and she is always happy to help out or offer suggestions,” notes Brooke. Highlights and men’s cuts are two of Brooke’s specialties. “Highlights are fantastic!” says Brooke. “By just adding or taking away color you can completely change your look, and it’s not as drastic as a cut. It’s a matter of a couple of hours, rather than waiting for your style to grow out.” 4805-50 Ave., Camrose Ph. 780.608.9076 Looking to change up Hours: Tues. to Sat., 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. your style? After watching people struggle with both unforeseen and scheduled life changes, Lynn began researching U.S. companies which focused on helping individuals successfully transition between life’s various ages and stages: seniors forced or electing to downsize, moves across town or across the country due to divorce, retirement, marriage or employment transfers. Estate liquidation situations, health issues and decluttering of homes or offices were also common denominators for people and companies that turned to professionals like Lynn to coordinate the chaos and stress out of overwhelming transitions of living and life. Lynn earned her certification as a valued member of the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM). A lengthy job-shadowing stint in Philadelphia taught this local entrepreneur the multi-faceted approach of the move process from space-planning to post-move support to advocacy. Janice employs a full-time staff of eight, year-round, but this number doubles to sixteen during tax season. Her husband, Allan, now retired from his postmaster position, even pitches in during the busy season. Ten years ago, the success of her company allowed her to purchase the building on 49 Street that houses her business. Janice’s sights are currently set on hiring for the 2019 tax preparation year. This fall she will be offering an eightweek (twice weekly) course to prepare quality candidates for their important role.

Debra Clermont, Supervisor
Centra Cam Outlet Store
Debra Clermont is high energy. The greatly loved supervisor of Centra Cam Outlet Store knows most of her weekly customers by name. She warmly welcomes new visitors as the never ending stream of ‘treasure hunters’ drops by to see the may items that have come in ‘overnight.’ All goods are donated through the Emergency Clothing & Furniture Depot. It’s the job of Deb ( twelve years in the position) and her amazing team of staff and volunteers to sort, repair, tag, display and ultimately sell merchandise. “Our objective, in this disposable society, is to save quality goods from ending up in the landfill. We take the approach that most items can be reused or repurposed and provide meaning to someone.” The store aims to sell merchandise at no more than twenty-five percent of original purchase price. Notes Deb, “We have certain clients that come in every week – some more than once per day. People love buying bargains and it’s a thrill to experience the happiness when someone takes home something they are excited about.” This outlet store is always packed to the ceiling with merchandise. “We are providing an amazing service to this community,” Deb summarizes. “By selling merchandise for a fraction of what it may be worth, we are enabling Centra Cam programming to continue.”

Tribute band mirrors Led Zeppelin By Murray Green
Led Zepagain captures the heart and soul of one of the world’s greatest bands, replicating the ultimate Led Zeppelin experience. They will be appearing at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. They mirror the highenergy electric classics and the beautiful acoustic works as Led Zepagain resurrects Jimmy Page’s soaring guitar leads, John Paul Jones’ brilliant keyboard passages, John Bonham’s trademark pounding rhythms
and the signature Robert Plant vocals. Classics include “Stairway to Heaven”, “Immig rant Song ”, “Whole Lotta Love”, “Rock ‘n’ Roll” and “Black Dog” that has led the band to become highly regarded as the most authentic representation of Led Zeppelin. When Led Zeppelin guitarist Page attended a Led Zepagain show at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, he was absolutely astonished stating, “It’s amazing how much you sound like us. You were inside the music, and you paid attention to detail in
your presentation. I can tell you really love our music!” The band consists of vocalist/harmonica player Swan Montgomery (as Robert Plant), guitarist/mandolinist Anthony David (as Jimmy Page), bassist/keyboardist/mandolinist Jim Wootten (as John Paul Jones) and drummer/percussionist Derek Smith (as John Bonham), playing to packed houses around the world. It will be the closest thing that you will ever see to a live Led Zeppelin performance.

Reporting tips helps law enforcement By Lori Larsen
Many citizens think twice about picking up the phone or going online to report a tip on possible criminal activity, but doing so can not only assist law enforcement in investigations, it can lead to arrests and charges, and subsequently stop illegal activity. The Camrose and Bashaw RCMP, Camrose and District Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch and Camrose County Protective Services encourage rural citizens to be nosey neighbours and report any suspicious activity, person or vehicle they observe either in their own neighbourhood or while travelling back country roads. Every month the RCMP in Alberta receive hundreds of tips from concerned citizens. Camrose and Bashaw RCMP and Camrose County Protective Service use information provided on the Battle River Rural Crime Watch Society website (brrcws.com/) and Facebook page (https:// www.facebook.com/BattleRiver-Rural-Crime-WatchSociety-707824772657843/) to assist in reducing crime in rural communities.

The information, no matter how insignificant it may appear to the citizen, could very well be the one piece missing in an already ongoing investigation and could be what makes the difference in keeping communities safe, protecting property and natural resources.
Report A Poacher, sponsored by the Alberta government, gives citizens two ways to report any suspicious or illegal hunting, fishing, serious public lands abuse or dangerous wildlife encounters, by either calling the Report A Poacher line at 1-800642-3800 or going online at www.alberta.ca/reportpoacher.aspx#toc-3. “Public tips comprise about 90 per cent of my investigations,” said Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch district officer Lorne Rinkel. “My success in this position is heavily reliant on such information” Rinkel related a recent example of a file that concluded in Wetaskiwin
Court. “There was almost $100,000 in fines and 20 years of license suspensions and judicial orders handed out to a tight knit group of several poachers.” This particular file included not only the poachers but a commercial meat cutter, taxidermist and persons involved in other serious criminal activities. “All in all, there were 12 accused and 147 charges laid in this matter. Public tips do work,” affirmed Rinkel. Aside from helping to protect our valuable natural resources, citizens reporting suspicious activity could be eligible for a reward funded by
the Alberta Conservation Association funds. While you do not have to provide personal information, doing so could assist officers further in the investigation. All personal information given in a report is kept completely confidential. Don’t think twice. Call or provide information through anonymous tip lines or by directly contacting the agencies and help law enforcement help you protect your homes, properties, communities and lives.

Sea Serpents win swimming regionals event By Lori Larsen
Camrose Sea Serpents came back from Regional competitions held Aug. 10-12 in Wetaskiwin, with a lot of metal swinging from their necks and a banner commemorating their first place standing in regionals. Camrose Sea Serpents placed first for overall team scores in the region with a total of 649 points. “This is the second time we have won regionals,” said Sea Serpent head coach Shane Gau. “That is a pretty big deal. The first time was in 2015. You always go through a rebuild and to turn it around in a small city is pretty big.” Gau hopes that this will create some excitement for next year’s season and help to retain a lot of the club’s swimmers into next season. The total medal count was 155, accounting for 63 gold, 32 silver and 60 bronze. Medal standings
Rylun Alberg-Moore swam away with five golds and one bronze medal. Kallista Ashton garnered two golds and a silver. Sammy Bragger picked up a bronze. William Allaway-Bragger brought home three bronze medals. Ainsley Burnett culled five golds and one silver. Shelby Burton came back sporting one gold and two bronze. Red Deer wins first Camrose cricket tournament By Murray Green

Right: Augustana director of athletics and campus recreation Greg Ryan presents Edmonton Lions captain Duminda Yapa with the second place trophy.
The Rose City Cricket Club hosted a Six a Side Cricket Tournament that was won by Red Deer United at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus on July 29. “We had lots of interest from teams and people who wanted to watch the games. We want to create interest in the sport,” said Sanjaya Weerasinghe, president of the local Rose City Cricket Club. There were six teams entered and the Red Deer winners were awarded with the Norm Mayer Championship Trophy and $600. The second place Edmonton Lions team received a trophy and $300. Other teams were the Edmonton Challeng-
ers, Augustana Vikings and the Kerala Strikers. “With only six players on each side a game can be played in about 15 minutes. It makes it a fast game and exciting game to watch,” added Sanjaya. The success of the first tournament has prompted the local club to book the second annual event on June 16 at the Augustana soccer field. Augustana, who are in the process of fielding a second team, will be hosting its first tourney this fall, on Sept. 29. ELKS SUPPORT
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Camrose Elks Lodge exalted ruler Gerry Czapp presented funds to Camrose 6th Scouts leader Becky Kuefler to support the various programs. The Scouts also help the Elks at their monthly community breakfast.
Counting chickens before they hatch is, they say, foolhardy. However, failing to plan for a likely eventuality is equally foolhardy. I was encouraged to see a recent poll, carried out by Mainstreet Research, which showed the UCP leading in every region of the province, including Edmonton. The poll found that 52.1 per cent of Albertans supported the UCP, while 32.5 per cent supported the NDP. The poll also found UCP Leader Jason Kenney to be more popular than the NDP Leader (40 per cent compared to 33 per cent). As I said in my last post I am following Jason’s advice, namely “If we work hard, stay humble and earn every vote, we will ensure that this deceptive, divisive, debt-quadrupling, tax-hiking, job-killing, accidental socialist government is one-and-done.” But, what should be our priorities if we are returned to power? Constituents often say to me that they want to see a return of the ‘Alberta Advantage’. What is the Alberta Advantage? Well, it was Lieutenant Governor Gordon Towers who first uttered the phrase when delivering the throne speech in August 1993. Ralph Klein had been returned to power and he had written: “Unlike some others, my government will not try to buy prosperity through higher taxes. Instead, it will build on Alberta’s existing advantage of low taxes and its free enterprise spirit to develop the most competitive economy in North America. The government will strengthen the Alberta Advantage and sell it aggressively around the globe.” I wrote of the importance of investment, or the ‘free enterprise spirit’, in my last post. Low taxation and free enterprise is the classic Conservative approach to economics. This approach has proven successful time and time again. So what are the steps to restoring the Alberta Advantage? It will not be easy. In the words of Churchill, “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.” For too long now governments, not just here in Canada, but throughout the western democracies, have followed a paradigm that is producing increasing debt. The difference between socialist and conservative governments appears to be merely one of scale. When Conservatives have attempted to deal with debt they have been far too timid in their reforms. Radical change is required. Essentially, governments must tax less, spend less and, importantly, meddle less. I recently had the opportunity to hear John Robson speak to this very issue. John is commentator-at-large with News Talk Radio 580 CFRA in Ottawa and is a National Post columnist and documentary filmmaker. He is also an invited professor at the University of Ottawa. John holds a B.A. and M.A. in history from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D in American history from the University of Texas at Austin. I will not repeat John’s commentary here. Instead, you can hear him deliver this personally. I have invited John to come and deliver his talk on Restoring the Alberta Advantage to you at an open event. The talk will take place at the Prairie Rose Seniors Centre in Wainwright on Friday, Aug. 24 starting at 7 p.m. The event is open to all Battle River-Wainwright constituents and to anyone further afield who might care to attend. I encourage you to come and hear a highly passionate, erudite and gifted speaker give you insight into the economic issues we face. John offers solutions which, although today may be considered radical, ultimately will become necessary. Let’s make Alberta great again! You can contact Wes Taylor, MLA Battle River-Wainwright at his office 780-842-6177 or fax 780- 842-3171.

Bob Michie of the Camrose area loves his 1957 Buick Special so much, he bought it twice. This Canadian made Buick Special sports coupe holds a “special” place in his heart. “It has the original 364 nail-head engine and drive train. It was called nailhead because the valves were real small for inand out-take,” explained Bob. “They made up for the small valves by having a big cam. These cars rumbled right from the factory. Some people took them back to where they bought the car because they thought it wasn’t running right.” The Specials had an all-new body and chassis a couple years prior, much wider and lower, and were now equipped with the allnew, more powerful Nailhead V8 engines. It was an OHV pushrod engine like the thennew Oldsmobile Rocket V8. It became known as the Nailhead for the unusual vertical alignment of its small-sized valves. To offset the smaller-sized valves and restrictive intake-and exhaust-port diameters, the Nailhead V8 family used a camshaft with greater lift and duration. The small-diameter intake runners allowed these engines to develop high torque, with many exceeding one foot-pound per cubic inch, exceptional for the time. All of the Nailhead designs have a 4.750” bore spacing. The Buick Special was an automobile produced by Buick. It was usually Buick’s lowest-priced model, starting out as a full-size car in 1936 and returning in 1938 (after a two-year hiatus) as a mid-size. “I bought this car at an auction in Edmonton, back in 2009 and really looked at it before buying it. I wanted to watch it because I really like this style of cars,” added Bob. “I didn’t plan on buying it. I didn’t think it would make the reserve bid, but I stuck my hand up anyway. The auctioneer looked at me and said sold!” He took the car home

with him and he enjoyed it for about four or five years. “I was working on another ’57 Buick and thought I didn’t need two, so I sold it.” Introduced in the middle of the 1955 model year the four-door Buick Special Riviera were the first fourdoor pillarless hardtops ever produced. He tracked the car as it went to Grande Prairie and Calgary with various owners when it came up for sale again. “One of my sons phoned me up and said dad, your car is back up for sale. I have to admit, I really did miss it. I bought it back and redeemed myself. I bought it back at the same price, but gained some new wheels and rubber.” Bob has maintained the car over the years. “It was in awesome shape when I got it and I’ve been keeping it going. I need to work on the brakes, but it has run well. I’m happy to find a ’57 Buick with the body and chrome all good. The guy that I bought it from at the auction said
he did a restoration in the ’80s,” said Bob. For 1956 the larger 322 cubic inch (5.3 L) V8 engine was shared with the rest of the range, although it was replaced by the bigger, 250 hp (186 kW) 364 V8 for 1957. This year also brought all-new bodywork. “You see a lot of Ford and Chevys at car shows, but you don’t see a lot of Buicks. I like this style and it does stand out at show and shines. You hardly see 1957 Buick’s, although Jason Urkow in Camrose also has one.” The 1949-57 Buick Specials had three VentiPorts, while more senior Buicks had four. “It has a three piece back window and some said it was a step backward. But now everyone loves that. The other cool feature is that you step on the accelerator to start the car,” informed Bob. His car also has power steering and brakes. “It is such a fun car to drive and the car can go when you take it on the highway.”
Bob, from the Kingman area, will be entering his vehicle in the upcoming
Round Hill Harvest Show and Shine on Sunday, Sept. 2.

He was born in Borlange, Sweden and is survived by nephews Jonny and Mikael Eriksson and their families, all who live in Sweden. Leif worked for farm equipment dealers as a heavy duty mechanic (most recently Douglas Lake Equipment) and enjoyed his work, both in the shop and on the road in the rural areas. Even on his days off, you could find Leif driving the country roads looking at the fields, the wildlife and watching the weather patterns. He just really enjoyed the rural scenery and stopping in to visit friends. Our dear friend Leif, your sudden loss was unexpected. If only we would have had that one last chance to see you or say our goodbyes. Your friends and family will miss you, Leif, and think of you often. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Decrease toxins, lower our stress By Murray Green
Increased oxidative stress is the source of all illness and leads to cardiovascular disease, arthritis and a variety of cancers. “There’s a lot of anxiety surrounding disease nowadays, as people seem to be getting sick left and right, and it’s not clear why. Most of us know at least one person who has suffered a heart attack or courageously battled breast cancer or faced down some other formidable illness like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s,” said Thomas E. Levy, MD, JD, author of Hidden Epidemic. “While many of us stress and worry about falling victim to a deadly health crisis, we feel largely powerless to protect ourselves from such a scary fate. But disease is far less random than we’d like to believe—and there’s plenty we can do to prevent it. All disease comes down to a single factor: too much oxidative stress in your body,” he said. “Oxidation is a normal component of the body’s healthy metabolic activity. But thanks to our highly toxic lifestyles, a state of highly increased oxidative stress (IOS) is becoming the norm. This is the source of all disease. Anyone who wishes to stay healthy should identify and eliminate all ongoing new sources of oxidative stress on a daily basis.” Surprisingly, the biggest source of IOS is the toxins caused by hidden dental infections, particularly infected teeth, infected gums and infected tonsils. In fact, studies show that root canaltreated teeth and chroni-
cally infected gums cause at least 90 per cent of heart attacks and 70 per cent of breast cancers. “Treating these kinds of infections in the mouth is a vital step in decreasing your toxic load (and thus decreasing IOS). But there are also lots of other ways to suppress the influx of toxins present in the body. If you can better manage your toxic load and prevent new toxins from wreaking havoc in your body, you greatly decrease your risk of disease...all disease.” Infections of the teeth are a significant source of pathogen-related toxins. These infections are asymptomatic and often not seen on a standard x-ray. However, they can be seen by using 3D x-ray imaging. “I recommend having a baseline physical evaluation and 3D x-ray of the mouth. Over time you can use this baseline result to indicate the presence of new infections in the roots of the teeth,” Levy suggested. C-reactive protein is a protein in the plasma that indicates the level of inflammation in your body. Though normal range for this test is usually zero to three, your CRP should ideally be well below one. Anything higher is an indication of increased oxidative stress. Low estrogen levels in women, low testosterone levels in men, and low thyroid hormones in both men and women all result in an increase in oxidative stress. And when oxidative stress is increased throughout the body, any focal infections present in the teeth and gums are more likely to
become metastatic. Therefore, it’s important to keep these hormone levels well within the normal range at all times. Normal thyroid function is particularly important in preventing infected teeth and gums from producing increased oxidative stress throughout the body. Traditional thyroid testing reliably diagnoses only extreme thyroid problems and misses more subtle forms of dysfunction. Patients should request T3 and reverse T3 tests to correctly analyze their thyroid health. Many people need to supplement with T3 as well as desiccated thyroid to restore function. “Sweat out” your toxins in a far-infrared sauna. Many chelating drugs pull toxins from your tissues, but don’t fully remove them from your body. This can cause a new toxic effect from the toxins as those toxins mobilize and travel to new tissues. But sweating gives you an enormous detox with little acute toxicity in the process. Aerobic exercise—and sweating caused by aerobic exercise—is also an excellent way to detoxify. Chronically increased oxidative stress can be bad news if left unchecked. But luckily there are lots of great ways to combat it. In a few simple steps, you can lower your toxic load, stop oxidative stress that might otherwise become deadly, and remove yourself from the danger zone of disease. Levy is a board-certified cardiologist, a lawyer and is the author of 10 other groundbreaking medical books.

Local oldtimers baseball teams enter nationals in PEI By Murray Green
Not one, but two local oldtimers baseball teams played in the Canadian National Oldtimers Baseball Championships in Charlottetown, PEI on Aug. 3 to 6. The Battle River A’s entered the 43 plus age group. They four games including a close 7-3 game against Medicine Hat in the last contest. “Pride Benson started organizing this team three years ago when Medicine Hat hosted nationals. We did fairly and were knocked out of the semifinals by Westlock. Harold Northcutt, former Team Canada pitcher, pitched for them, so it shows you the calibre of baseball players that can be at nationals,” said Dave Borman, a player on the Battle River team. “This year we had a smaller team, but just a great group of fun guys.” Players on the team included Darrell Heck, Cam Bowie, Brian MacDonald, Craig Tanton, Rick Massing, Colin Ryder, Ray Lehman, Neil Anderson, Rick White, Pride Benson and Dave Borman. When two of our players couldn’t make the trip, we picked up a guy from Nova Scotia because his team didn’t have enough players to go.” The team entered several tournament and exhibition games to prepare themselves for nationals this summer. Battle River were involved in three close games, and except for the opening game against Kindersley, they were within striking distance of winning. They also played Woodslee, and Regina. Third place Medicine Hat won 7-3 to knock Battle River out of the tournament without a win. “It was a close game until the end and we had the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate, but they made a triple play to eliminate us,” said Dave. Nationals will likely move to Saskatchewan, or Alberta next year, so the team should be ready to go again next year. “We started with 22 players on

Camrose Police attended a residence after receiving a report that a female had been assaulted by her boyfriend. Police attended and it was determined that the intoxicated female had fabricated the assault. Arrangements were made for the female to stay at a friend’s house for the evening. A local hotel contacted police after a patron was harassing a female employee. The extremely intoxicated male was arrested, lodged into cells and released when sober. Aug. 15
An east end business contacted police advising that a male placed an over-the-phone order with a credit card and believed it to be suspicious. The business had been victimized by a similar scam in July and believed it may be the same person.
