n 2016, the City of Camrose shared their plans to develop a new playground in the Stoney Creek area. The Battle River Watershed Alliance partnered with the Camrose Wellness Coalition to apply for grant funding to further enhance the city’s vision for the Stoney Creek area and were successful in obtaining funds. In addition to the playground, the grant from the Community Facility Enhancement Program provided funds to purchase additional playground pieces, develop a sensory pathway adjacent to the playground as well as an Amphitheatre. The playground offers a place for kids to connect with the natural world while participating in creative play. The sensory pathway is not only meant to be fun, but also is instrumental in promoting an awareness of one’s senses

and surroundings. Children are encouraged to walk barefoot through the pathway, exploring their feet’s reaction to different textures. The outdoor Amphitheatre, made up of large boulders, is located next to the Stoney Creek Centre and is open to schools and community groups to use as a natural classroom space. Other community partners were involved in the planning and will continue to work on developing a shared vision for the area, which may include a day use facility and also an adventure track for mountain biking. A grand opening of the new amenity will take place on September 28th.

Letters to the Editor Are you a Diver or a Scanner? In Barbara Sher’s book I Could Do Anything if I Only Knew What It Was, a chapter about “Divers and Scanners” made lightbulbs go off in my mind. Some people are Divers–they have a dominant passion and love to learn more and more about it to deepen their expertise. Divers might spend a lifetime in one field, becoming ever more expert in narrower areas (not just physician but surgeon; not just surgeon but heart surgeon; not just heart surgeon but aorta replacement surgeon). If you’re happy being completely immersed in one field, Barbara Sher would call you a diver. Examples of divers are professional musicians, scientists, athletes, medical specialists and accountants. Our North American culture tends to admire Divers–the specialized experts. Other people are scanners–interested in many things and reluctant to settle into one field. Scanners might love to read and write, fix and invent things, play hockey, design projects and businesses, meditate and sing. Did you notice the word “and” rather than “or”? Scanners don’t love to do one thing or the other; they love to do them all. Scanners often become experts in several fields. They study deeply and do total immersion–for a while. Then one day they’re bored and look for what else is out there. One famous scanner was Leonardo da Vinci–artist, scientist and inventor of entire new fields. Our North American culture is often less impressed with scanners. Shouldn’t they settle down to one career or passion? As I read, I realized I was a scanner. I wanted to be a “generalist specialist”–knowledgeable about many things but not locked into any of them. I looked at my career(s): typist and layout artist; teacher; social services manager; community and organizational consultant, and in more recent years mentoring and facilitation roles. Starting a project-based business was perfect because I could learn about different things and meet different kinds of people without having to change employers! I thought about divers and scanners as I watched a Tedx talk, “Why Some of Us Don’t Have One True Calling” by Emily Wapnick. What Barbara Sher called scanners, Emily Wapnick called “multi-potentialites”–people with many interests and creative pursuits. She pointed out that people ask children, “What do you want to do when you grow up?” as if there would be just one thing. Sometimes people see “multi-potentiality” as a limitation or affliction to be overcome. She sees three strengths. Idea synthesis–because multi-potentialites dive into multiple fields, they sometimes see connections and patterns that are less obvious to those who stay in one field or environment. Rapid learning–when multi-potentialites get interested in something they immerse themselves in it. They’re used to being beginners so willing to try new things. Many skills are transferable across disciplines. Multipotentialites bring everything they’ve learned to new areas, so they’re seldom starting from scratch. Adaptability–multi-potentialites are usually able to change into whatever is needed in a situation. Fast Company magazine says adaptability is the most important skill to develop in the 21st century as the world changes quickly and unpredictably. Research suggests that “diver” or “scanner” is not something we learn; we are hard-wired with one or the other tendency. The world needs all of us–divers and scanners; deep specialists and broad generalists. Some of the best teams are made up of a diver and scanner. The diver can dive in deep and implement ideas while the scanner has a breadth of knowledge and perspective to see other possibilities. The key point? Whichever we are, we will be happier if we do everything in our power to align our careers and our lives with our natural inner wiring. Whichever we are, we will also be happier if we seek out and learn to work with and appreciate those who are not like us. The world needs all of us, and we need each other. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one day.

Readers may have noticed the recent bright blue color and decor changeover at a west end gas bar. What may have been missed was the prompt increase (tariff) from seven cents/litre to nine cents/litre, a price spread between regular to mid-grade, and from 14 cents to 18 cents price spread between regular to premium. Unfortunately my old (but dependable) Acura must use premium– so I noticed. A city-wide survey and a comparison to other provinces is painful (remember 2008 International Banking crises; World Oil Price hit $139 per barrel and Calgary Gas Price peaked at $1.379/litre). We see the Camrose price spread varies from 14 cents to 19 cents per litre, so it pays to have the option of shopping around (check actual pump prices as only the lowest regular grade price is posted). Curious is the price spread in the Maritimes varying from eight cents to 10.5 cents per litre, not to mention overall cheaper prices. Also Saskatchewan overall has cheaper prices! Mind you, Eastern Canada Imports about 750,000 barrels/day of Foreign Crude Oil, shipped halfway around the globe, at world price (currently

$65/barrel West Texas Intermediate). Confused–so am I. Note the Maritimes and Saskatchewan do not have carbon taxes that our government seems so proud to levy and justify. To my knowledge incremental refinery processing costs to upgrade regular gasoline to mid or premium grade are much lower than one is led to believe and certainly suspect in high Camrose pump price spreads. Perhaps we Albertans are punished for being blessed with most of Canada’s oil and gas reserves and selling them too cheaply (since we fail to get export pipelines built) to our only buyer–the USA! Sources: GasBuddy. Com, e-mails or phone calls with distant family and friends, Gas Receipts and personal surveying. Neil Leeson, Camrose Asylum response

It’s interesting that Ron Williams wished to address several “missstatements” regarding MP Sorenson’s column on asylum seekers, but failed to provide one fact to support his arguments. What Williams did was provide incorrect information to mislead the public in order to push his ideological approach on immigration. I wonder if his statements are the result of his extensive experience in the Immigration system or through years of academic research? Let’s review some of his statements. “They are not illegal immigrants, they have broken no laws.” I invite Ron Williams to read the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Specifically, Sections 18 to 20, which provides in law who can and cannot enter Canada. It provides in law what foreign nationals need to enter Canada such as passports and visas. If anyone enters

SHIPWRECKED Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The Resurrection Lutheran Brethren Church in Camrose hosted 120 children and young people and 60 volunteers, during the Vacation Bible School (VBS), at the brand new church. The theme for this year's VBS was shipwrecked. Attendees spent from Aug. 20 to 23 learning, connecting and sharing. Pictured back row left to right are VBS attendee Danyel Rokos, volunteer Jenya Rust, VBS attendee Jesse Hagen and volunteer Jamie Severson. Seated in front from left are attendees Peyton Enzenauer and Addison Evenson.

Canada in violation of this act, they have by definition, “broken the law”. Williams will have you believe that these people receive all the same checks as any other normal person who enters Canada “legally.” Williams has either purposely misled the reader or he is completely ignorant of the immigration process. Any person who has knowledge of the system would know that those who apply to come to Canada “legally” (other than Americans), go through a background check prior to arriving in Canada. This is done either through the visa application process or through the Electronic Travel Authorization process. Those who “break the law” and enter Canada illegally do not get checked the same way as those who apply legally. Any background check is done after the fact and because it is being done in Canada and not at the home nation, the checks are not as thorough. Williams suggests that these people are “not” queue jumpers, but rather joining the queue at a “different” point. I am finding it hard to follow this logic. It’s not queue jumping as long as you enter the queue at some point, just not the front? Would Williams allow this logic for people who wanted to enter the queue at a “different’ point when awaiting medical surgeries? Or would that be considered queue jumping? Unfortunately, because this column has a 400word limit, I cannot fully address all the inaccurate statements by Williams. The facts can be found as the government of Canada publishes all the statistics, federal court decisions and immigration division decisions on the Internet. Martin West, Camrose

A change of scene I needed a change of scene. I called up one of my top adventure sidekicks: my mother. She had no idea what I was talking about, so I had to explain about the book The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit by Emma Thompson which we gave to our children at Christmas a few years ago. In the book, Peter Rabbit is in need of a grand adventure or change of scene as he calls it. He heads out, and after several misadventures, finds himself at a rabbit games day, which seems to involve throwing heavy objects. Bored, he wanders off and comes upon an unusually large radish. He takes a nibble and then another nibble, until he’s hollowed out most of the radish. Later, he discovers that the radish is to be used in the games and he is called upon to throw the radish. He picks it up and throws it to the other side of the clearing to the astonishment of the other rabbits, winning the coveted Cup. Feeling awful, he tells the truth about the hollow radish. There is a long silence, then the other rabbits roar with laughter and his trick becomes the greatest story in the history of the games. Once he finally makes it home to his mother, Benjamin Bunny creeps up beside Peter and says, “Um…next time you need a change of scene… can I come?” To me, the story is about when you are tired of the regular goings-on in your life and want some new excitement. I had written these words to my children in the front pages: “May you have many change of scene adventures together!” The last time I needed a change of scene and considered going camping mid-week, I had hemmed and hawed. I made a pros and cons list of going camping with my parents and kids or staying home. Then I stared at it and wondered how the list was supposed to help me decide. In short, my indecision was driving me nuts. Finally, we went for just one night instead of two, and I kicked myself for not just recognizing that I needed some excitement and going for it. So this time when the urge struck to get out of the house, I obeyed. My mother agreed that a change of scene would be nice, so she hopped into our motorhome and off we went without our men to a new campground we had been wanting to explore. It’s surprising to me how sometimes you assume that you can’t do things just because you haven’t done them before. I had never put the bikes on the bike rack on our motorhome at the end of the trip, but I did it just fine. The older couple camped beside us said to me, “Was it you who drove the motorhome?” Yup, sure was! When we returned home, one of the first things the kids wanted to tell dad was how we made a matchless fire the second night. He guessed that we used a lighter. The kids giggled. He guessed that we used a flint. More giggles. Wrong and wrong. We had noticed that our neighbours had left a log in their fire pit when they left, so my mom hauled it over to our fire pit where my sevenyear-old built a little cabin on top of it with our wood. Then we realized the bottom log was still smoldering and we only had to add some paper and voila! Fire! Mini adventures can come along at any time and don’t have to be expensive or take a lot of time. A few years back we were coming home from visiting relatives in Medicine Hat. We stopped briefly in Hanna and could hear music and laughter, so we walked a bit and discovered an outdoor water park. It was the last weekend it was open in the summer and it was free. We didn’t have a swimsuit for my then two-month-old son, but we did have a swim diaper and onesie, and the rest of us had swimsuits. Voila! Swimming! I have a new sign in my entrance way that says “adventure awaits” and it’s a good reminder as I head out my door that life is one big adventure. When a “change of scene” adventure comes along, sometimes there’s no time for second guessing. Jump in! Sometimes it’s you who will be changed.

Construction zones in effect throughout Camrose By Lori Larsen

Bright orange construction zone signs and cones litter the City of Camrose with road, curb and sidewalk construction underway. As residents and visitors drive throughout Camrose, they are bound to be detoured or delayed. The road rehabilitation is part of the 10 year City Road Plan implemented in 2015, after an extensive pavement conditions study was completed. One of the recommendations that came out of that study, in an effort to maintain status quo and improve road conditions, was for the City to invest approximately $3 million annually (for a 10 year period from 2015) towards road rehabilitation, including some work on sidewalks, curbs and gutters. City of Camrose director of engineering service Jeremy Enarson explains. “As part of council’s approved budget 2018, they identified a few locations that were priorities for the city in consultation with the City. Administration goes out and takes a look at the conditions of the roads, prioritizes them, then puts them as proposals to council. Ultimately, council has a chance to provide input, change priorities and approve the budget.” In 2018, a number of locations were identified, some of which have already been completed, some are in the process and some are yet to be completed this year.

west of Augustana, just down from Jubilee Park. “In the North end, 50 Street North of 54 Avenue is having some roadway work and installation of sidewalk on one side of the road,” said Enarson. “The road was in very poor condition and was needing some work, so now was the opportunity for us to do something further.” A major project on Highway 13 (48th Avenue) by Grand Park Crescent and Grand Drive will realign how the service road entrance is on the north side of the road (Highway).

“That is the first of a two year project where we are doing the north side of the road this year, with the goal of doing the south side of the road in 2019. “At the end of 2019, everything between Grand Drive and Mount Pleasant Drive will have been upgraded with new asphalt, and concrete, including most of the service roads along there. It will be a significant improvement.” The City is also working on 50 Street going south towards the Camrose Regional Sanitary Landfill. “All the millings

(grindings) coming off the road from the various road projects in Camrose, are being used on that project,” noted Enarson. “Right now, with that project, they are in the process of reshaping and just before they reopen they will oil, allowing time for the oil to soak in and firm up the roadway so that oil doesn’t splash up onto vehicles.” Enarson added, that as other major road rehabilitation projects in the City occur, those millings will also be used on the 50 Street going south project resulting in another clo-

Some of the completed projects include; 39 Street in the industrial park, 53 Street and the “S” curve by the cemetery, 50 Avenue one block east of City Hall and various spot repairs such as 44 Avenue south-

sure of that road later this fall. The last two major projects which are slated for this year, include 48th Avenue (Highway 13) from 73 Street to the west City limits and 68 Street/Camrose Drive southwest corner starting a little to the west of Parkview Drive, going west to Marler Road. “The 68 Street/Camrose Drive project may not begin until mid to late October. We are hopeful that it is going to get done this year, but that is the one road project that might carry into next year, bearing in mind delays from the 48th Avenue Bridge project, weather conditions and that Border Paving has other clients as well as the City.” Enarson did however, say that Border Paving will not start the 68 Street (Camrose Drive) project this year unless they are confident it can be completed this year. Scheduling for all projects is done by contractor (Border Paving), and the City appreciates that Border Paving does have other clients, such as some of the schools in Camrose, that may be prioritized over City work. “We are obviously patient and understanding of Border Paving, as well as their other clients’ needs,” explained Enarson. “Once they start working on City projects, they manage to get a lot of work done at one time.” Motorists and pedestrians are once again reminded to use caution when travelling through or around construction areas and the City thanks everyone for their cooperation in abiding by construction zone signs and for their continual patience.

City does their part in adhering to water restrictions By Lori Larsen

During mandatory water restrictions, some residents may be more conscious of people watering outside the designated times of between 6 and 9 a.m. or 7 and 11 p.m. or what may deem to be wasteful watering. During the regular council meeting held on Aug. 20, City of Camrose councillor Wayne Throndson inquired as to what departments within the City are doing during Stage 2 of the Water Shortage Response Plan (WSRP), specifically around the watering of City owned and operated parks, flower beds and sports fields including the golf course. City of Camrose engineering services director, Jeremy Enarson respond-

ed, “With Camrose being in Stage 2 of the Water Shortage Response Plan, the City is equally responsible to follow the restrictions set in place. “An obvious water use of the City’s is the watering of public trees and flowers, as well as the use of water cannons in the City’s soccer and sports fields. In both cases, the City has taken steps to ensure daily operations follow the restrictions outlined in the WSRP.” Enarson noted that the City will continue to water the trees and flower beds around the City, but will be using non-potable water from the Water Treatment Plant. “The water cannons used on the soccer fields around the City still use potable water, but staff

have adjusted their watering schedule to only operate during the times allowed in Stage 2 of the WRSP. As we move closer to the fall, the overall need for watering public sports fields will also decrease as temperatures decrease.” Similar methods apply to the Camrose golf course, which uses non-potable water from Mirror Lake to irrigate the greens, tee boxes and fairways. As well, watering is restricted to the early morning to minimize loss from evaporation. “The City’s water main f lushing program (also known as the Unidirectional Flushing or UDF program) will continue throughout Stage 2 of the WSRP. The UDF program is considered to be a criti-

cal component of public health and of the City’s water system because it ensures high quality water is within the City’s water mains. As a result, the WSRP does not restrict the UDF program during Stage 2, although the UDF program is restricted during Stages 3 and 4 of the Plan.” Another significant user of water within the City is the Camrose Fire Department. “Obviously, the fire department is permitted to use water as needed in emergencies,” said Enarson. “However, the Fire Department also uses water for training purposes. As training is a critical part of their operations, the City’s WSRP does not specifically restrict the fire department from using

water for these purposes. Even though the WSRP does not directly impact the fire department’s operations, the department is actively looking for ways to minimize the amount of water being used during their training.” The City continues to monitor the water levels in Driedmeat Lake, as well as the flow within the Battle River and will provide residents with information on the restrictions in place. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the engineering department at 780-672-4428 or by email at engineer@camrose. ca. …a special summer feature In Camrose and area a significant number of women hold positions of power and prestige. Many others own their own small businesses or are key players in their respective companies. The Camrose Booster is profiling some of the best, the brightest and the most prominent women who work, employ and lead in the community of which we are all so proud. Watch for profiles in summer issues of the home team paper! If you would like to be a part of our next women in business issue, please call The Booster, 780.672.3142 and ask for Mike, Jeff, Sue or Ron.

As a trained 911 dispatcher, paralegal and outreach coordinator, Lynn Neufeld has developed an undeniable and unequivocal reputation for helping others. After watching people struggle with both unforeseen and scheduled life changes, Lynn began assisting people of all ages through transitions. After researching U.S. companies which focused on helping individuals successfully transition between life’s various ages and stages: seniors forced or electing to downsize, moves across town or across the country due to divorce, retirement, marriage or employment transfers, Lynn earned her certification as a valued member of the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM). A lengthy job-shadowing stint with the founder of NASMM in Philadelphia advanced the skills of this local entrepreneur perfecting the multi-faceted approach of the move process from space-planning to post-move support to advocacy. The entire process allows the individual to remain in total charge of their important transition. The goal is to carefully maintain treasured memories and preserve sentimental keepsakes while ensuring only the essential belongings remain as possessions. Estate liquidation situations, health situations and decluttering of homes or offices were also common denominators for people and companies which had turned to rely on professionals like Lynn to coordinate the chaos and stress out of overwhelming transitions of living and life. As Lynn compassionately notes: “We create a Remarkable Experience. We C.A.R.E.” www.ageandstagemoves.ca

Christine Shuman and Wendi Rau, Co-owners of Shuman Insurance

Christine’s desk sits two paces from the front door. It’s symbolic of her commitment to serving her clients well and being totally accessible to them (although on occasion a client thinks she’s the receptionist due to her proximity to the entrance). Christine was drawn to the business because its family legacy is important to her. Her grandfather Ed started the company some 75 years ago, her dad Steve continued the enterprise and Christine carries on the tradition of excellence. She enjoys the complexity of the insurance industry and its ever-changing nature. It challenges her. She derives satisfaction from new customers who come to her through referrals from long-term satisfied clients. She and co-owner Wendi Rau are brokers, which means they have the best interests of their clients first. They don’t represent insurance companies, but rather, they seek coverage from an array of insurance sources that best fits their clients’ needs.

Wendi was working at city hall some 23 years ago when one of the city councilors, Steve Shuman, asked if she would like to start a career in the insurance business as a customer service representative. She hasn’t looked back. Now she co-owns the business with Christine and is passionate about it. She enjoys assisting her clients in solving their insurance requirements. She sees herself as an educator and advisor, matching the best insurance coverage with the client’s needs all the while gaining their trust through the process. Wendi likes to say her clients are working with the CEOs of the company when they talk to her or Christine. “You’re dealing with the owners,” she says. She’s also proud to be part of this thirdgeneration family business in Camrose. “It’s a family-oriented business,” she says. “We’re moms and grandmoms successfully operating the longest-standing insurance business in Camrose.”

With over 20 years’ experience in the field of mental health, Pamela started her private counselling practice out of her home after moving to our city five years ago. A registered psychologist with a PhD in clinical psychology, Pamela has been trained in a broad scope of therapies for individuals, couples, families and groups for a wide range of issues. She has spent numerous years working with children, adults and seniors, for a wide range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and psychosis, to name a few. “I believe we do our best in life when we focus on becoming our best – mentally, physically and spiritually,” states Pamela. “Mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and trauma get in the way and disrupt how we cope with life and relationships. My goal is to help people find the strength and wisdom within to help them move towards their greatest potential.” An avid animal lover, Pamela also has two dog ‘pet therapists’ that she will sometimes use in sessions. “Pet therapy can help patients feel safe and comfortable,” notes Pamela, “and dogs make wonderful therapists!”

Terri Halseth, Owner

Nails by Terri

Eleven years ago, after Terri and her husband had moved to Camrose, their daughter wanted Terri to be a stay-at-home mom. Terri, who had previously always worked outside of the home, considered the options of a homebased business – but what? After researching the possibilities, and being a creative person, Terri realized there were not many nail techs in the city, and this might be a good fit for her as a stay at home mom. After a few months of training she was ready to begin… and the rest is history. Within a year of starting her business, she loved it so much she became certified as a nail therapist and was on her way to becoming an educator. Eleven years later, she still loves what she does, has a loyal client base, and has been an educator with NailBasics for close to a decade. She still works out of the nail studio in her home where she welcomed her very first client all those years ago, and she still loves meeting new clients. Her services include sculpted gel nails and toes, manicures, pedicures and facial waxing. Terri also teaches the Nailbasics Introductory Course to those wishing to become nail technicians. And the daughter that she stayed home to raise… like mother, like daughter – she also now works in the beauty industry as a hairstylist at a local salon!

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. 2. 3. 4.

To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water colour. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants. This year’s UDF program began July 26, 2018, starting with Zone A (in Area 1) and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discolouration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If a discolouration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Ashton Ford at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428.

Notice is hereby given that Council may thereafter without further notice proceed with final approval of Bylaw 3003-18 at the regular Council Meeting on September 4, 2018. At the Royal Canadian Legion’s 47th Dominion Convention held this year in Winnipeg, a new president was named. “I am looking forward to working with my comrades across the county,” said Tom Irvine. “From advocacy to Veterans Services, to working closely with our partners, I plan to give The Royal Canadian Legion my undivided attention over the next two years.” A native of Montreal, Quebec, Irvine is a long time Legion member and retired veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces. He joined the Legion’s Ormstown #196 branch in 1988 and is currently a life member of Hemmingford #244. He has served in various elected positions at both provincial and Dominion Command levels. Most recently, he served as the Dominion 1st vice-president and chair of the Dominion Command Membership Committee. Irvine also served with the reserves, in the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada for 23 years and was part of a peacekeeping tour in Egypt with the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF 2) in 1975. Irvine worked with TD Canada Trust before his retirement in 2004. A father of four children and four grandchildren, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals in 2002 and 2012. The Legion’s Dominion Convention is held every two years at varying locations across the country, and during which the organization’s policies and programs are determined. Incidentally, the 275,000-member organization was formed in November 1925 at the Marlborough Hotel, in Winnipeg. Founded in 1925, the Legion is Canada’s largest Veteran support and community service organization. They are a nonprofit organization with a national reach across Canada. Contact the Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion to become a member, or find out how you can help serve the community with various projects.

Along with some sand, Beach Volleyball players kicked up some results during the Camrose tournament, held on Aug. 18 and 19. A total of 36 players (12 teams) ages five to 50, came from Edmonton, Beaumont, Wetaskiwin and the Camrose home team, consisting of league members and others. The final results showed Brittyn Sveahun and Ava Moller not only winning the 2-on-2 event, but joining forces with two players from the Camrose Beach Volleyball League to beat another league team in the finals. The last game in the tournament was the 4-on4 championships to 21, resulting in a final score of 27-25. Camrose Beach Volleyball League plays 2-on2 every Monday night at 6:30 p.m. and mixed 4-on4 every Wednesday night, May-September. September is celebrated as Library Card Sign-up Month marking the beginning of the school year. “Library Card Signup Month is an initiative of the American Library Association,” said Camrose

For the entire month of September, library cards are free for everyone, and we’re partnering with local businesses to offer incentives for cardholders.” The friendly and helpful staff at the library encourage all Camrose and area residents to come in and see that what they have

to offer goes far beyond just signing out a library book. “Library Card Sign-up Month is a an advocacy event designed to remind our entire community that a library card is a ticket to something incredible, be it literacy, recreation, or lifelong learning.” For more information on the Camrose Public Library and the programs offered visit cpl.prl.ab.ca/.

Sing your own song! Join ATP’s original Edwina (Recent MacEwan University grad Darian Yurkoski) and other alumni in this heartwarming musical about the joys of growing up. Thirteen-year-old Edwina Spoonapple would do just about anything to be a part of the Kalamazoo Advice-a-Palooza Festival. While her siblings both have proof of their accomplishments, poor Edwina has nothing. When a talent scout from the convention visits her hometown, she trots out her musical advice, giving shows live from the family garage in hopes of finding her place in the spotlight. She is assisted by her older siblings, quirky friends and neighbors. Together, they set out to tackle the world’s problems in number after hysterical number about everything from birthday party etiquette to proper table settings.

Armena Community Market set to go By Lori Larsen

If you are looking for a homemade pie to finish off the long weekend, or some fresh out of the garden vegetables, come out to the Armena Community Market on Sept. 3, Labour Day, and shop for a variety of homemade and homegrown goodies and gifts. This is the eighth year for the annual market, which takes place at the Armena Anniversary Park from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. “There will be lots of fun events and activities for the whole family,” said one of the event organizers Olav Traa. “The Armena Community Market welcomes folks from near and far to join us in celebrating the vibrant and dynamic cultural heritage, our little county hamlet.” Bring the entire family and let the children play in the adjoining park–have their face painted, or join in on the fun rock art activity. Once again the Market will feature a display of steam-driven engines of an era gone by, demonstrated by knowledgeable experts ready to answer any of your questions. “Fans of vintage vehicles, as well as modern-day max horsepower racers, will be in for a treat as we welcome new exhibitors to our event,” noted Traa. Local vendors will be selling homemade and homegrown products and goods, providing unique and one-of-a-kind gift ideas. A hot lunch of Alberta beef on a bun, as well as an assortment of delicious homemade fruit pies and ice cream, will be available. Come out to the Hamlet of Armena, approximately 21 kilometres northwest of Camrose along Highway 21, and enjoy a down home event, browsing through the open market, sitting and enjoying a bite to eat, while visiting with family and old friends and taking in the tunes of local musicians. Its another wonderful way to spend the holiday Monday, close to home.

Camrose Connector kicks off By Lori Larsen

Camrose and area residents will now have a viable option for making the trip to Edmonton. The Camrose Connector, a new inter-city bus service between Edmonton and Camrose, sponsored by the City of Camrose and operated Red Arrow, will officially launch on Sept. 4. The Connector will run Monday to Friday and include three daily return trips, stopping at three locations in Camrose and four locations in Edmonton. Camrose stops include the University of Alberta Augustana Campus, St. Mary’s Hospital and Duggan Mall. Edmonton stops include the University of Alberta Transit Centre, University of Alberta Hospital, Southgate Mall, and the Red Arrow Edmonton South Ticket Office. This service and route were chosen specifically to help people in these communities have a lifeline to specialist medical appointments, educational opportunities, recreation and a connection to the rest of the province by linking into the Red Arrow network.

The 20 passenger, wheelchair accessible shuttle will feature comfortable seats, free wifi and an onboard washroom at a reasonable cost. “ This CamroseEdmonton shuttle service, provided by Red Arrow and supported by the new ride-share plan, will open up educational, health care, employment, recreation and social opportunities that residents in the city and across the county did not have before,” said City of Camrose Mayor, Norm Mayer. Alberta Transportation Minister Brian Mason congratulated the City of Camrose and Red Arrow Motorcoach, for moving forward with the Camrose Connector regional transit service, funded by more than $450,000 through the government’s Rural Transportation Pilot Program. “This is the next step to improve public transportation connections for rural residents across this region and the province.” John Stepovy, director of Business Development for Red Arrow agreed, “We’re extremely excited to be a part of this initiative as this new service will not only connect Cam-

rose residents to Edmonton and vice versa, but will allow them to easily access the entire network of Red Arrow and Ebus routes that span the province.” The Camrose Connector inaugural trip will depart Camrose on Tuesday, Sept. 4 from the University of Alberta, Augustana Campus at 7 a.m. Booking, online reservations and schedules for the Camrose Connector are available through Red Arrow at www.redarrow.ca or by telephoning toll free at 1-800-232-1958. For general information on the Camrose Connector Service visit www.camrose.ca/camroseconnector. The Camrose Connector is part of a new Rural Transportation Pilot program created, following a province wide public engagement, to help Alberta municipalities develop regional transportation services that best meet the needs of their communities. In addition to the Camrose Connector service, the Government of Alberta approved funding for the City of Camrose to hire a ride-share service coordinator.

Bags for readiness support strong beginnings for young children By Lori Larsen

In an effort to support a strong beginning for children starting school, the Camrose and Area Childhood Development Coalition is once again distributing Readiness Bags to students throughout Camrose and area. “We are hoping to distribute another 300 this year,” said Camrose and Area Childhood Development Coalition coordinator, Jolene Doig. “The Coalition has received current data, that one in four kindergar-

ten-aged children in our coalition area are experiencing some degree of difficulty in one or more areas including physical health and well being, emotional maturity, language and cognitive skills and communication and general Knowledge.” The Readiness bags are comprised of materials and activities gathered by the coalition, to encourage children and families to explore these areas of development. “We are so excited

to share these bags with three-year-old children in our area.” The bags will be distributed at preschool orientations, child care programs, Alberta Health Services Pediatric Walk in Clinics, and are also available through the coalition. If you have any questions or would like to inquire about receiving a bag for your preschool child, please to contact Jolene Doig at email j.doig@camrosefrc.com.

A 59-year-old man advised Camrose Police Service his ex-common-law is sending him threatening text messages and continuously phoning him. Police spoke with the woman and advised her to seize all communication. Police received a complaint that a 20-year-old woman was causing issues inside of her parent’s residence and was threatening to damage their property. Members attended and mediated the situation. The daughter agreed to stay with a friend for the evening. A complaint was received from a west end business that several people were stealing from inside of the store. Two women were arrested and agreed to pay for the merchandise. Both were served trespass notices not to return to the store. At 1:30 a.m. police were conducting patrols in the downtown area and observed a suspicious male in the area of 51 Avenue. Members noted the male to be in possession of a suitcase with multiple stolen items inside from a local store. A 35-year-old man was arrested and charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property. The man was released to appear in court.

Danger of social media By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot

New technologies and social media platforms have advanced the way we communicate but it has also caused some pause for concern. All too often, careless posts or tweets have serious repercussions that were not contemplated by the originators. Case in point–Foreign Affairs Minister, Chrystia Freeland’s tweet that the Government of Canada was gravely concerned about the arrests of civil society and women’s rights activists in Saudi Arabia, including Samar Badawi, and called for their immediate release. As a result of this rather innocuous tweet, during the week of Aug. 6th, Saudi Arabia announced that it would suspend new trade and investment with Canada, in addition to giving the Canadian ambassador twenty four hours to leave the country and recalling its own ambassador to Canada. The Saudi government has also directed the sell-off of all Canadian assets and purchases of Canadian wheat and barley which will be of serious consequence in Western Canada. They have also given Saudi students enrolled in Canadian universities four weeks to leave the country, stopped all medical treatment programs in Canada and are working to transfer all Saudi patients from Canadian hospitals. The recall of the primarily medical students, will negatively impact the Canadian economy as this will remove approximately $2 billion in annual investment. Reports indicate however, that the dispute will not impact Saudi oil supplies to Canada. Canada, particularly the Maritime provinces, wouldn’t need Saudi oil if the Liberal government would restart the Energy East Pipeline Project. Annually, we import $2.2 billion worth of oil from Saudi Arabia which is refined in Saint John, New Brunswick at the Irving refinery. If Energy East had been built Western oil was heading to the New Brunswick refinery and Canada was destined to become more energy independent. While we wait for the Liberals to resurrect the pipeline project they killed, which will take some time, we could increase our import of oil from the United States. As a Calgary radio host recently pointed out, agreeing to buy an additional $2.2 billion of crude annually from our major importer of oil and largest trading partner could restart the stalled NAFTA negotiations. Canada remains excluded from the negotiating table and the U.S. does not appear to be willing to resolve the dispute anytime soon. Similarly, Prime Minister Trudeau is not willing to apologize for Minister Freeland’s ill-advised tweet nor seek economic retaliation. Our allies have refused to intervene in the dispute with Saudi Arabia while the Badawi family has spoken out and criticized the Liberal government for the tweet, saying that the public dispute will make matters worse for Raif and Samar Badawi. A Conservative government has and will always raise human rights, gender equality, and religious freedom with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We will also continue to call for clemency in the case of Raif and Samar Badawi. What we will not do, is use social media in place of proper diplomatic engagement to advance Canadian values and interests. I sincerely hope the Liberal government will quickly bring about a positive resolution to this crisis that protects human rights and the rule of law. Equally important, I implore people, particularly, those in powerful positions, to think before tweeting. Social media cannot and should not replace open verbal conversations or negotiations. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or previous columns you may write me at 494550th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780-6084600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780-608-4603 or e-mail Kevin.Sorenson.c1@parl.gc.ca.

Hohm takes Music Festival Nationals by the ‘french horn’ By Lori Larsen

The french horn is renown for being one of the more difficult instruments to play, but when done well has sweet mellow sounds, and Camrosian Juanita Hohm has indeed mastered the art. Having taken up the french horn in Grade 5, under the instruction of music teacher and band leader Bob Bailey, Juanita has perfected her performance to the point of winning a spot playing at the 2018 National Music Festival, held in Sackville NB, Aug. 12 to 18. “First I played in the Edmonton Kiwanis Music Festival at the end of April and won the provincial national class (brass solo),” explained Hohm. “I also had to be entered into at least one other class to qualify.” After successfully obtaining that title Hohm was sent to provincials, in Edmonton at end of May, where she was required to perform two pieces at approximately 20 minutes total, all by memory. “I won provincial for brass solo class and was then entered into the national competition.” Hohm honed her skills on the french horn through hours of practice and playing in school band, all the while improving her competitive accomplishments with participation in the Camrose Music Festival for nine years. “I missed

this year because I had an exam,” she said. “That’s why I attended the Edmonton Music Festival instead.” For the National Music Festival, Hohm played on Wednesday, Aug. 15 performing two pieces. An unaccompanied version of Scandinavia by Vitaly Buyanovsky and an accompanied version of Morceau de Concert Op. 94 by Camille Saint-Saëns. “I wasn’t able to bring an accompanist,” she said. Prior to the festival she was able to acquire an accompanist from the Sackville area, who practiced the piece Hohm was playing then met with her for the first time on Aug. 13 during rehearsal. On Thursday, Aug. 16 the competitors attended workshops until the announcement of the winners for the individual classes. “Winners played one more time during the Grand Award Concert, on Thursday, then an overall winner was selected.” In speaking of her performance during nationals Juanita said, “I made a few mistakes that I wish could have been avoided, but I felt that I had a really confident overall performance. I received some helpful comments in my adjudication also. Besides that, it was just great to experience some of these things that I’ve never done before, like flying with my horn, meeting an accompanist

three days before performing, doing an official sound check, and listening to many other amazing performers in different disciplines. If I could, I’d love to go back and try for a win, but for this time, I would consider it a huge success.” To this day, Juanita has no clear answer as to why she chose such a difficult instrument to play, other than she enjoys a good challenge, wanted something different and maybe had a little Divine intervention. “God must have had something to do with it,” she quietly laughed. Presently, Juanita is a music student at the University of Alberta and hopes to continue pursuing performing. “I have gained a lot of confidence through performing and I would like to continue performing. But I may also pursue my bachelor degree (education), because I had a lot of influential teachers say I would make a great teacher.” When asked what it meant to her to be able to perform on the National stage, Juanita replied humbly, “It’s pretty great when I think about how far I have come and how far I was away from home and that I was representing Alberta in brass solo. But I tried not to think about that. I just played my best and had some fun.”

Submitted Juanita Hohm represented the province in brass solo during the Music Festival Nationals held on Aug. 12 to 18 in New Brunswick.

The automotive section of

Chevy II Nova exchanged through friends By Murray Green

Mike Wolsey of Camrose knew the car inside and out before he purchased from a friend, Tony Delaney, also of Camrose. The 1963 Chevrolet II Nova was a small automobile manufactured by Chevrolet and produced in five generations from 1962 through 1979, and 1985 through 1988 model years. Nova was the top model in the Chevy II lineup through 1968. The Chevy II nameplate was dropped, Nova becoming the nameplate for the 1969 through 1979 models. “It was an original six motor and friends of our family owned it. We knew about the car and what shape it was in,” said Mike. “It sat in our friend’s garage for more than 15 years. He had raced it, but it sat as he built a faster car.” Chevy II one of the fastest new-car development programs in GM history—just 18 months after the designers got the green light, the first production Chevy II rolled off the Willow Run, Michigan, assembly line in August 1961, in time for its Sept. 29 introduction. “It was offered to us, so we bought. It has all been restored from top to bottom.” There was a lot of debate within the Chevrolet organization over just what to call this new car, and the decision to go with Chevy II was a very late one. Among the finalists was Nova. It lost out because it didn’t start with a “C,” but was selected as the name for the topof-the-line series. Ultimately the Nova badge would replace Chevy II, but that wouldn’t happen until 1969. “It has a 327 motor, just a beautiful engine for this car. You can drive it all day long. I went to Red Deer with it recently and it was just excellent to drive,” added Mike. Available engines for the Chevy II in 1962 and 1963 included Chevrolet’s inline-four engine of 153

EARLY NOVA

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Before the Chevy Nova’s were known for their big motors and lots of power, the Chevrolet II Nova was a small car designed to keep pace with Ford’s Falcon. Car enthusiasts soon found out that it was easy to add a larger V8 engine into the same space.

cubic inch (2.5 L) and a new third generation 194 cubic inch (3.2 L) Chevrolet straight-six engine. All Chevy II engines featured overhead valves. A V8 engine was not available in 1962 and 1963. Absent documentation, dealer installed options” of a V8 in a 1962 or 1963 is a myth. “Every once in a while I get the urge to put a bigger motor in it to make it a faster car, the way it was meant to be. My friend keeps asking me when I’m going to put something more under the hood. I’ll see how it goes and decide what to do with it in the future. Right now, it is a nice car to drive.” In 1962 and 1963, the Nova option for the Chevy II was available in a convertible body style, and a two-door hardtop was available from 1962 to 1965, although the hardtop was dropped when the

1964 models were first introduced, but subsequently brought back to the line later in the model year. Like all Chevy twodoor hardtops, the body style was marketed as the Sport Coupe. For 1963, the Chevy II Nova Super Sport was released. It featured special emblems, instrument package, wheel covers, side moldings, bucket seats, and f loor shifter, and was available only on the 400 series sport coupe and convertible. The Nova option could not officially have V8 engines at this time— the standard SS engine was the six-cylinder (this was also applicable to the Impala (and later the early Chevelle 1964–65) when the SS was a sport and appearance package) —but small-block V8 engine swaps were common place among enthusiasts. It wasn’t until 1964,

that factory V8 engines first appeared in the Nova to keep up to the new Chevelle. Mike is pondering

the idea of entering his vehicle in the upcoming Round Hill Harvest Show and Shine on Sunday, Sept. 2.

FASD AWARENESS

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer, seated centre, signs a proclamation declaring September 9 FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) Awareness Day, witnessed by Prairie Central FASD Association. FASD Educator Jennifer Willes, seated right and FASD Association representatives Lavonne Lumb, seated left, Karen Bovencamp-Manning back left and Sheena Lawlor, back right.

Mayor Norm Mayer signed a proclamation declaring Sept. 9 FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) Awareness Day, fostering a sense of awareness in Camrose and area about the dangers of prenatal alcohol exposure, Aug. 14. “FASD Awareness Day provides the opportunity to build awareness and understanding of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder in our community,” said FASD educator, Prairie Central FASD Association’s Jen Willes. Prenatal alcohol exposure causes birth defects, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, attention deficits and behaviour disorders. Individuals with FASD are also subject to social disorders such as disrupted school experiences, juvenile delinquency, homelessness, mental health and substance abuse issues, unemployment and criminal behaviour. Events will be taking place to mark FASD Awareness Day during the entire week of Sept. 9, in communities across the province, country and worldwide. In Camrose, organizations such as the Prairie Central FASD Association, The Open Door, Camrose Association for Community Living and McMan will be hosting awareness events. In honour of FASD Awareness Day, the public are invited to a free breakfast at The Open Door on Friday, Sept. 7 from 8:30 until 10 a.m. Since the first FASD Awareness Day celebrated on Sept. 9, 1999, symbolizing the nine months of pregnancy during which the expectant mother should abstain from alcohol, bells are rung at 9:09 a.m. in every time zone from New Zealand to Alaska. Throughout September in Central Alberta, people will be wearing the FASD Knot, a symbol designed in memory of Reynold Abel Dorris, (1968-91) whose father Michael Dorris (1945-97) wrote the book The Broken Cord, a perspective on the author’s struggle to understand and deal with his adopted son’s (Abel) health and learning problems as a result of FASD. The circle in the knot symbolizes the womb, a

baby’s head, the human brain, the earth and the network of people who care about people living with FASD. “No amount of alcohol has been found to be safe during pregnancy,” remarked Willes. “FASD is the most prevalent disability in Alberta and recognizing and understanding this disability is paramount to both it’s prevention and in providing appropriate supports to individuals affected by prenatal alcohol exposure. “There is no cure, so compassionate understanding and support are our best options, as well as supporting our expectant families to avoid alcohol during pregnancy. As our children are our most valuable resource, it is our responsibility to nurture and protect them. We know prenatal alcohol exposure causes birth defects, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, attention deficits and behaviour disorders.” Willes f u r ther explained that the first line of defence against the effects of FASD is education and sharing information with women and their partners, caregivers, professionals and anyone, on the dangers of using alcohol during pregnancy. “If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, of childbearing age, or breastfeeding, the safest choice is to drink no alcohol at all. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is preventable, and it is all our responsibility to take care of the health and wellbeing of future generations. Support your loved ones not to drink alcohol during pregnancy.” To learn more about Prairie Central FASD Association and FASD Awareness Day visit prairiecentralfasd.ca. The Brothers golf tournament By Lori Larsen

For 30 years a brethren of golfers, literally, have come together annually for ‘The Brothers Golf Tournament,’ the last 25 years at the Camrose Golf Course. Whether for the love of the game or the unbreakable bonds of brotherhood, these men come from all over to celebrate a long lasting tradition. The tournament is usually held the Friday before the long weekend in September and has seen its share of variable weather, including one tournament where it actually snowed. Today the skies were gray and bouts of rain poured down on the greens. The tournament was initiated by five sets of brothers from Camrose; Wynn and Shane McLean, Ken and Frank Duggan, Doug and Gordie Berg, Steve and Ross Schuman and David and Glenn Lyseng, after an original golf game that took place at Pigeon Lake Black Hole golf course, in 1978. “We had a very nice evening the night before (the first tournament),” recalled Ken Duggan. “After that first golf tournament we had such a blast we decided we had to continue doing this and get a few more brothers on board.” After the pairs of

brothers decided this would be an enjoyable way for a group of friends, blood related or otherwise, to get together every year and celebrate good times and great friends, the idea blossomed from five pairs of golfers the first year to eight pairs the second, nine pairs the third year to 124 golfers at its peak. “This is the largest golf tournament in Camrose,” noted Wynn McLean. Gathered around a table on the upper floor of the Camrose Golf Course, Ken Duggan, Gordie Berg, Wynn McLean and Ross Shuman recollected 30 years of bringing together The Brothers. “It’s a bunch of good buddies getting out and enjoying the brethren,” said Ken. The rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of these amazing men and most certainly didn’t slow down their incredible comradery and spot-on senses of humour. “This is not very competitive at all,” remarked Ken. “We have some good golfers but it is not meant to be competitive, we are not setting handicaps. “The first year we had the tournament, we talked about having a handicap and were asking what everyone’s handicap was. That’s when Gordie, here,” Ken pointed to Gordon Berg. “Who now has a

cocochlear implant so he can hear, but then he was quite a deaf guy, yelled out ‘I’m deaf, it’s about time somebody asked me.’ Well that was the end of doing handicaps.” The group all laughed as Ken did a repeat performance of that moment in time. “We set a bunch of different categories for prizes but it really is not competitive. We have a Reikei Trophy for the golfer with the highest score.” There was a pause while the group waited for that to sink in. “That is for the golfer that comes in dead last,” smiled Wynn while Ken added, “That is one we all try to avoid but we are getting to the age where we are all competitors for that now.” Still growing and going strong, The Brothers Golf Tournament now welcomes three generations of brothers to the fold and while the oldest golfer may be 78, younger golfers are proudly continuing the tradition. “Some of these guys from when we grew up, like the McInnes brothers, just keep coming back. It’s a great day to enjoy your brethren with some golf thrown in for good measure.”

Sardar Baljinder Singh Garcha Sardar Baljinder Singh Garcha, 61, of Camrose, Alberta, passed away suddenly but peacefully, on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, in his home after sustaining a major heart attack. He was born January 2, 1957 in Kohara, Punjab to Sardar Nidhan Singh Garcha and Sardarni Bhagwan Kaur Garcha. He was the third of five children. Baljinder first came to Canada in 1976 and worked odd jobs for the next couple of years, before deciding to pursue an education and career as an optician. In 1987, he went back to India to marry Sardarni Kuldip Kaur, and subsequently brought her back to Canada to begin their new life. Shortly thereafter, they gave birth to their first child, and only girl, Simran Kaur. In 1990, the family decided to move from Ontario and establish their roots in Edmonton, Alberta. The year 1993 was a busy one, for with it came the arrival of their son, Bhavjot Singh, and after working for a variety of different optical stores, Baljinder and Kuldip opened their first Visionmasters optical in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. After a successful few years, they opened a second Visionmasters location in Camrose, Alberta. In 1995, the family grew by one more with the introduction of Dilshant Singh and by 1998 they decided to move from Edmonton to the small town of Camrose. In 2008, they moved out to the countryside, which was his dream. After leaving the farms of Punjab, Baljinder always yearned to live on a farm again. In 2016, he was overjoyed to witness the marriage of his daughter to Karamvir Singh. In 2018, he fulfilled another dream of his and got his motorcycle permit. He had plans to buy a Harley and go on road trips with his family, Baljinder was a happy, hard-working, loving man that brought joy and laughter to every room he entered. He had a passion for travelling the world and loved to immerse himself in nature. On any given day he could be found working in the yard, playing with his dog, or simply taking a nap in the sun. He loved to dance, sing, and tell stories to anyone willing to listen. His jokes were the lifeblood of any party and his smile was contagious. He was a loving, devoted husband and an amazing father. His family was his most prized possession and the source of his pride. Baljinder leaves behind his lovely wife, a beautiful daughter and son-in-law, and two handsome sons. His friends and family will remember him fondly and the legacy he leaves behind is impressive. He will be remembered for his kind soul, warm laugh, and glowing smile. His wisdom and humour will live on through all those he has encountered and will be passed down through the generations. Our family wishes to express our sincere gratitude to all those who have supported us through this time of loss. Baljinder was not one for sadness and would wish that we not mourn his passing, but celebrate his life instead.

Camrose Police Service conducted a vehicle stop on a vehicle that was driving aggressively and stunting in downtown Camrose. It was determined that the young male driver of the vehicle did not have insurance and various traffic tickets were issued and the vehicle was towed. At 1:30 a.m. police attended an address in Camrose after receiving a concern of suspicious persons in the area. Members located various individuals and after police checks were conducted it was discovered one of the males was currently out on release for break-in tools and possession of stolen property. Part of his release conditions were to abstain from alcohol and a curfew to be at a residence in Saskatchewan.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Round Hill Show and Shine By Murray Green

Drive your favourite vehicle to the sixth annual Round Hill Harvest Show and Shine on Sunday, Sept. 2. The Round Hill and District Agricultural Society is hosting its yearly event at the agricultural grounds near the ball diamonds and campground. “The show and shine is open to all pre-90s vehicles and is in conjunction with our threshing demo. A vehicle can be registered a classic after 25 years, so it made sense to include 80s vehicles. We had a lot of requests to include them as well,” said organizer Allen Tomaszewski. “Every year our event grows. It depends on the weather, but we are hoping for an even bigger show this year. I remember that in our first year, I went into Round Hill and couldn’t see Main Street because it was so foggy. I thought it was going to be a wreck, but it cleared off and it turned out to be a great day,” he recalled. Awards are presented in classic, pick-ups, rat rods and muscle car categories. “The show is wide open and we even take works in progress into the event,” said Allen. “The event brings a lot of people into Round Hill and it begins with a pancake breakfast,” he added. The pancake breakfast starts the day from 9 to 11 a.m., with registration held from 9 a.m. to noon. The car show is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and door prizes will begin at 1:30 p.m. “We will have a binding, threshing and stooking demonstration. We want to show younger people how things were done in the past, and bring back memories for some of the long-time farmers,” he said. “It was so labour intensive and took days compared to the 10 minutes it takes a large combine to do the same space. This is our chance to show them what it was like.” Tomaszewski, when he was 16, was one of the last age groups to harvest with binders and threshing machines. “Both threshing and the classic vehicles are a thing of the past. This is an opportunity to reflect on our history in the area,” said Allen. The threshing demonstration is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. A show and shine awards presentation will be held at 3 p.m., with several awards to be presented. “In a community like Round Hill, everyone pitches in and helps to make it a success.” For more information on the event, contact Allen at 780-672-6104.

The Camrose Sea Serpents swim club shone bright again during the Provincial Swim meet held in Edmonton on Aug. 17 to 19. Scoring a total of 312 points, the 55 swimmers competed at provincials in 86 individual events and 21 relay swims “The coaching staff are very proud of each swimmers’ performance,” said Sea Serpents head coach Shane Gau. “Camrose placed sixth for overall team scores in the province.” Medal standings

Rylun Alberg-Moore brought home one gold and four bronze. Kallista Ashton garnered two gold. Ainsley Burnett reined in one silver and two bronze. Shelby Burton hung up a gold. Marissa De Hoog gained a silver and three bronze. Jordyn Fifield won two gold. Grayce Flemming swam off with a bronze. Noah Galenza came away with two gold and a bronze. Callum Gau took home two bronze, while Hannah Gau had a little of all colour with two gold, one silver and a bronze. Will Hoyme shone metal around his neck with three gold, one silver and two bronze and Madison Hoyme garnered a bronze. Serkan Isik won two gold, one silver and a bronze. Chevan MacKenzie scored two bronze medals. Alex Marsili achieved two gold. Bennett Rolston gained two bronze while Carter Rolston brought home each a silver and bronze. Jenna Worton triumphed with a gold. Will Hoyme, Noah Galenza, Serkan Isik and Alex Marsili broke the provincial record in the Boys and Under 100 metre free relay with a time of 1:12.94. The previous record was set 25 years ago with a time of 1:13.33. As this is the end of the season, the club will no doubt be facing some challenges in the next season with the closing of the Camrose pool, but Gau indicated the coaching staff are already investigating options for training. “We have some evenings planned and that will help. Wetaskiwin has been pretty good at accommodating us (at the Manluk Centre). “We are also going to be doing some cross training outside the pool, as well, to keep the swimmers active so we don’t have to be travelling twice a day to Wetaskiwin.” The Sea Serpents look forward to another successful year ahead in 2019.

Central Agencies Home of the Week

Great starter in Duggan Park

By Lori Larsen

If you are looking for a great starter home or investment property this bilevel located on a quiet street with no through road in Duggan Park, would easily fit the bill. A large front window saturates the living room with an abundance of natural light which flows into the adjoining dining area and kitchen. Well maintained oak cabinets offer plenty of storage in the bright cheery kitchen with back door access to outdoor living in the backyard. A bay window in the kitchen is the ideal place to sit and enjoy a beverage while soaking in the sunshine. Completing the main floor are two bedrooms and a four-piece bathroom. A wonderful feature of a bi-level is it allows for larger windows in the basement and tons of natural light. The fully developed basement with an over-

sized bedroom, four-piece en suite bathroom and a large family room would be perfect for an older child to call their own private space or house guests away from the main floor activity. A double tiered back deck opens up all kinds of opportunities for outdoor entertaining or just sitting and relaxing in the fresh air. Back alley access will take you right up to your own oversized heated garage. No more scraping windows in the winter. This lovely bi-level located at 7506 41 Avenue is priced to suit a new home owners budget at $259,900.
