J
ust driving in the vicinity reveals the completion of the Mirror Lake Bridge project is getting closer. With no further construction snags, or significant weather delays, the goal of early October for bridge and pedestrian underpass travel, plus uninterrupted movement on 48 avenue, should be realistic. Installation of the wiring and fixtures for the pedestrian underpass lighting is concluded. Curbs and gutter work was underway last week. A center median is yet to be constructed. Final prep work for paving of the roadway is soon to be achieved. Street light installation will immediately follow the paving, as will line painting and guardrail installation. The final phase of construction involves remaining landscaping work. The end result: an attractive and functional roadway and walkway that will provide many decades of service to the community.

OLMP School has new leaders in administration this fall By Murray Green
Kevin Elliott is the new principal and Kristy Smith the new assistant principal at Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School (OLMP) as the students return for the 2018-19 school year. When former principal Joe Kucy was asked to serve at Vegreville’s St. Martin’s Catholic School, it opened opportunities to Elliott and Smith. “I’m excited to take on a new role at OLMP. Joe was the leader here for four years and I had the opportunity to work with him last year. I was progressed into this role to take on a similar path with a different view on things,” explained Elliott. He was a principal in Hughenden in the public school system before returning to Camrose. His father taught in Camrose and his wife’s family is from here as well. “Both sets of parents are part of the community here, so I wanted to be back in Camrose as well.” Smith was a teacher at OLMP, but welcomed the move to administration after receiving her masters several years ago, under Jim Ofrim
and Lorne Berg at the Camrose Composite High School. “I enjoy being the student voice in the community, so I’m really looking forward to doing even more with that and support our rock star staff. It is going to be a lot of fun,” said Smith of her new role. “I started that path years ago and it is God’s plan, so here we are.” OLMP is bursting at the seams with students this year. “We are excited about where the direction of the school is going with the Grade 5 to 12 environment. We combined the schedule into one for the whole school, which had challenges before that, but we want everyone to be on the same page,” said Elliott. “We literally flipped the classrooms around with the middle and high school switching spaces,” said Elliott. “We added three more portables in the back and we are maximum space for our site.” The school has had a transformation since its days as an elementary school when it first opened. “Some students have been in during the sum-
mer helping with painting and building furniture, so they are excited as well,” added Smith. “I grew up in public schools and, don’t get me wrong, they do a fine job with education, it is just the connecting with students and feeling comfortable talking about religion that is a big part of who we really are,” said Elliott. “A lot of our staff are very active in the church and want to be that role model for the students.” The school will be busy with the Connections Project this year. It gives students a circle of security and a safe place in times of stress. It will help students with following a lead and taking charge of their lives. OLMP will be having an open house on Sept. 18 for parents and community members to tour the school and see the changes in the facility, as well as meet the staff. Letters to the Editor Back to school-whose world view?
In this Back to School Week, I’m thinking of the High School Class of 2018– those who finished high school last June and are now beginning post-highschool education or entering the work force, or both. The Class of 2018 were born in this century. Depending on your perspective, 18 years may or may not be a long time, but it’s long enough to shape your perceptions of the world. Here’s some of what their world has always included. Human beings have always been living, not just traveling, in space. People loudly conversing with themselves in public are no longer thought to be talking to imaginary friends. They’ve always been able to connect electronically with friends around the world, and do banking and shopping online. There’s always been a Survivor. Xlerators have always been drying hands in 15 seconds with a roar. Mass market books have always been available exclusively as Ebooks. Films have always been distributed online. They’ve always been able to refer to Wikipedia. There have always been more than a billion people in India. In the US, they have grown up afraid that a shooting could happen at their school. They’ve regularly experienced not just fire drills but lockdown drills. I Love You has always been a computer virus. They’ve grown up with stories about where their grandparents were on 22/11/63 and where their parents were on 9/11/01. Worldview. ***
Flashback: I’m in my mid-40s. A dear friend has just turned 75 and makes an observation about people in my age group giving her advice. She says, “All those so-called experts who are younger than I am–I’ve been all of their ages. But not one of them has ever been my age. They don’t know what this age is like.” Another flashback from my mid-40s. I’m having a frustrating conversation with a woman in her 60s. She’s saying things that are so judgmental and contemptuous of teenagers of the day. That would include my teenage children. Sitting with this woman’s implacable right-ness, I feel utterly helpless. I’m defensive on behalf of my teenage children and their friends (not that I don’t get irritated with them often!) and powerless to make a chink in this woman’s disapproval. Overnight, it occurs to me to think about what I know of this woman’s experience. When I see her the next day, I ask her, “Are you wondering why young people today act so angry and fearful and confused when it seems to you they have so little to be concerned about? When you were their age, you’d been through the Great Depression, and there was a war, and your friends and then even your husband were going overseas to maybe get killed. Is that why you feel so impatient with young people today?” “Yes!” she said. “I don’t understand what young people today have to be upset about. Their world is safe.”
Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Sir John’s statue
Concerning the taking down of the statue of Sir John A. MacDonald by the city of Victoria. A statue is a symbol. In this case it is a symbol of the importance to Canadians of Sir John’s work in cobbling together a group of disparate British colonies to form the Canadian federation. We can be rightly proud of what we aspire to stand for in modern times, but we can not be proud of all of the attitudes and actions taken in the past. One pa r ticula r ity egregious attitude common at the time resulted in a horrible tragedy for a whole society of people, those who were here when us English settlers arrived in the land, we
now call Canada. What could be more horrible and tragic for a child, than to be taken from its family to a strange and hostile place to be treated as no better than vermin and beaten into submission to a strange and unfriendly society? Think about what the parents felt at the loss of their children. This was the tragic result of thinking that the culture and society one has grown up in is the only proper way to be human. Others who are different are less than human and must be extirpated or changed as they will always be an unsatisfactory burden to the proper society. This is the tragedy of conservative thinking. All cultures would like to preserve their own thinking and way of life. This results in a scourge to humanity when a more powerful society is able to tramples on a weaker one. In their minds the only solution to the problem of having in their midst a bunch of dirty savage humans was not to kill them, which was a solution taken by some at the time, but instead, take the children, train them in our ways and the elders will soon enough
die natural deaths and the problem will be solved. Enough people in Canada are now recognizing the horror that results from this kind of thinking, that our country has become a refuge for those who have been trampled and abused. We are embarrassed by what happened in Sir John’s time, we wish to apologize to the survivors of that horror and we wish to make amends to them. So we provide what is needed and encourage them to gather the pieces of their broken culture and to think proudly of their heritage. An important example is their desire to protect nature. We must stop building pipelines through the parts of our country that was promised to be theirs. Unfortunately, there is still a portion of our people in Canada, who think as in Sir John’s time and use their power and inf luence to preserve their privilege and culture, dominating those in a weaker position. Arnold Baker, Camrose

Flashback: I’m in my 50s, with my seven-year-old grandson, driving through the tunnel by the Legislature in Edmonton. On the sides of the tunnel, carved into the walls, are etchings of birds in flight. “Grandma,” my grandson asks, “Did the cave men make those birds?” I’m amused. “No,” I say. “This tunnel has only been here about ten years so it couldn’t have been the cave men. They were making cave art a lot longer ago than that.” He’s quiet for a minute. “Grandma,” he says, “For you, 10 years might not be a long time, but for me it’s longer than I’ve been alive.” Right. More than a lifetime. So–can those of us born before 2000 bridge the “worldview” gap with those to whom this millennium belongs? Do we have anything to offer them? Do they have anything to offer us? I think so. But we’ll need to listen as well as talk, and seek to understand as well as to be understood. May all of us be willing to lurch towards that kind of maturity. The world needs it. ***

Break up with bad debt, not family By Murray Green
Too many couples and families fall into bad debt situations that can lead to break ups. Don’t break up your family, break the debt cycle instead. It’s time to talk about the dysfunctional relationship Alberta residents have with their debt. Credit Canada is Canada’s longest-standing non-profit credit counselling agency and they want to share some of their information. Findings from a new national Dysfunctional Debt survey from Leger and Credit Canada paints a picture of the dysfunctional relationship Albertans have with their debt and shows how debt can create negative thoughts and actions that mirror the feelings of being in a toxic personal relationship. More than half of Albertans with debt (54 per cent) believe debt negatively impacts their lives, significantly higher than the national average of 47 per cent. Albertans are also more likely to be impacted by their debt than British Columbians and Atlantic Canadians. Overall, more than a third of Albertans with debt (34 per cent) suggested it prevents them from going out, versus the national average of 27 per cent. Others feel it prevents them from attending social gatherings or makes them avoid relationships altogether. Meanwhile, others feel unmotivated because of the debt they carry and many can’t sleep. Two thirds of Albertans in debt report neg-
ative feelings including frustration, depression, embarrassment, shame and guilt. This penchant for negative feelings is also much higher than the national average 53 per cent. The negative impact debt can have on people’s lives and relationships is hard to quantify. It can lead to isolation, depression, frustration and loss of overall morale, which can ultimately affect a person’s wellness. Debt can be both the cause and the result of mental health issues, so addressing it is critical for overall wellness. Fifteen per cent of all Albertans (not just those in debt) have ended a relationship due to a financial issue, including poor spending habits or money management, lack of financial honesty (including hidden debt or purchases) and overall debt or insufficient income of one or both partners. If you’re willing to end a relationship due to finances, why not end your toxic relationship with debt? There is a strong therapeutic element when consumers attend credit counselling. It is possible to break up with debt. There are resources, including free debt counselling sessions to provide initial relief and ongoing wellness. But most importantly, people need to know they are not alone, they can overcome this and nobody must be defined by their debt.

Olsons named 2018 community builders Foundation Board make the decisions about what projects are most in need at any given time.”
By Lori Larsen
On Friday, Oct. 19, the Battle River Community Foundation will celebrate the outstanding contributions of two amazing community members, Mardell and Verlyn Olson. The 2018 Community Builders Dinner will be held at the Norsemen Inn, with a meet and greet at 6 p.m., followed by the a dinner at 7 p.m. sharp. Grace will be offered by Mardell and Verlyn’s 12-year-old grandson Josh. The evening will be emceed by the Olson’s long time friend, Keith Lyseng and will include a live auction, conducted by Doug Johnson, featuring items that reflect the Olson’s life and legacy. Following the dinner, speakers including former law partner Bill Andreassen, cousin Val Sims, former government colleague Dr. Richard Starke, sports journalist and broadcaster John Short and son Hans Olson, will enlighten guests of all the good that both Mardell and Verlyn contribute to the community, along with some personal anecdotes about the couple. The couple
Residents of Armena, Mardell and Verlyn dedicate their time, energy and resources to building strong community and have been long-time admirers of the great work accomplished by the Battle River Community Foundation. “I think the whole premise of the BRCF is brilliant,” said Mardell. “To know that the principal is never touched and that the investment income will support the needs of the region forevermore gives a person such confidence in donating. We owe a debt of gratitude to the founders of the BRCF for their vision.” Verlyn added. “When I think about those who were there at the start,” and those who are there still, it’s a cross-section of people who always put others first. Their dedication is clear and I really admire that.” The couple’s own philosophy ref lects that of BRCF in putting the needs of others first and helping to build and sustain strong vibrant communities. “ Throughout their lives, Mardell and Verlyn have lived out their values in ways that have inspired us and made our community a better place to live, work, grow and serve,” said BRCF past chairman Blain Fowler.
History of builders
Verlyn and Mardell Olson have been helping build our community for many years.
“Through their own care and service, they have shown us how much they care, not just about today, but also about the future. They want to leave a community that is strong for those who follow. In that way, they share the vision of those of us who work with the Battle River Community Foundation.” Mardell was born and raised in the Armena community and grew up watching her parents, along with many others, take a turn at doing things to help ensure the community stayed strong. Verlyn’s family also has roots in the Armena area, although he himself grew up in Camrose. “Our two families were neighbours for many generations,” explained Mardell. “Although the two of us didn’t meet until we were in college we soon discovered that our families’ land was actually next door to each other.” The couple met at Camrose Lutheran College 45 years ago, while working on campus at summer jobs. Mardell in the kitchen and Verlyn part of the maintenance crew. In 1976, they married. Then in 1978, Mardell graduated with an education degree and Verlyn with a law degree. The couple have three wonderful children, Laura, Hans and Erik and now boast five grandchildren. Mardell and Verlyn’s strong commitment to supporting rural community has involved and still involves a plethora of volunteering and serving different organizations.
Mardell fulfilled a long time career in teaching and since retiring expends a great deal of her time, energy and dedication as a member of the Grateful Grannies–a not-for-profit organization that involves local grandmothers in raising funds for grandmothers in Africa, who are raising grandchildren who have lost their parents to AIDS. She also served on the Augustana Scholarship Committee, the Augustana Chaplaincy Board, Church Councils and many community committees. She and Verlyn, along with other family members, started the Pretty Hill Film Festival in their basement which, after ten years, moved to Camrose and became the Nordlys Film Festival. The Olsons are still heavily involved with this mid-winter community event. Verlyn has also played a vital role in the community through not only his work as a lawyer, but as an elected Member of the Legislative Assembly who served as both the Justice Minister and the Agriculture Minister. Outside of his work, he volunteered for 25 years on the Viking Cup Committee and was a founding member of the Camrose Sport Development Society, which helped bring the Camrose Kodiaks to town. He also served on a number of boards, including the Camrose Lutheran College Corporation, the Bethany Group, and the Alberta Motion Picture Development Corporation. Verlyn enjoyed coaching base-
ball and hockey and was part of a group which created a baseball program in Armena. At its height, Armena baseball attracted approximately 150 local children. True to their unassuming and humble nature, both Mardell and Verlyn, while thankful for the honour, admit it is a bit intimidating. “There are certainly more worthy individuals who could have been selected,” said Mardell. Verlyn agreed and added. “Nothing we’ve ever done was accomplished without the support and involvement of many other people. We’ve always been part of a team.” But for Mardell and Verlyn, accepting the recognition as Community Builders opened an avenue for them to start their own fund through the Battle River Community Foundation. “ We’ve a lway s planned to start a fund, but we hadn’t done it yet,” remarked Mardell. “We are really excited about the idea of being able to raise funds that help the Foundation do even more good work in our local area.” The Olson’s named fund will be included in the Community Fund, which is used to support a wide range of local projects. “We have soft spots for so many things,” exclaimed Verlyn. “From fine arts and sports to so much more, that we did not want our fund to be limited in what it was able to support. We are very comfortable in letting members of the
The first Community Builders Dinner came about as an idea of Tom Kuntz, 14 years ago. The event serves three purposes. It recognizes those who share the “giving back” philosophy that is so much a part of the success of the Battle River Community Foundation. Guests attending the dinner have an opportunity to become familiar with the concept of the Community Foundation, how it functions and how it can help finance worthwhile community projects and initiatives. Lastly, money is raised to establish funds in the name of honourees, that will, in turn, do good work in their community. Previous Community Builders dinners held in Camrose have honoured Joe and Phyllis Voytechek, Berdie and Bill Fowler, Dr. Red and Fran Elliott, Alver and Arlene Person, Bitz O’Riordan, Jeanette and Bernie Boser, David and Gail Stolee, Norm and Betty Mayer, Allan and Valerie Fielding, Kevin and Ally Gurr, Bob and Margaret Prestage, Ken Drever, Dwight and Bonnie Maurer and Ken and Shirley Rostad. Several other dinners have been held in communities in Flagstaff, Beaver and Camrose counties during the same period. T he Community Builders Dinner has become renowned as one of the top social events of the fall and since its inception, has generated approximately $900,000 in endowments that benefit the communities Battle River Community Foundation serves. Donations made to and through the BRCF truly are gifts that keep on giving, as are the people honoured by the foundation as amazing community builders with incredible giving spirits. Tickets for the 2018 Community Builders Dinner are available through any BRCF board member, at the BRCF office or by telephoning 780679-0449. Tickets always sell fast so purchase your tickets early and come out and help celebrate Mardell and Verlyn and all they have done and continue to do for the community.

Covenant president praises St. Mary’s ER renovations By Murray Green
Covenant Health president and CEO Patrick Dumelie visited St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose on Aug. 27 and he liked what he saw. He enjoys his annual trip to Camrose to see firsthand how St. Mary’s Hospital is progressing. “This is the fun part of the job, getting out and meeting the staff. They share things they are really proud of and also the challenges they endure,” said Dumelie. “We are a large organization and this allows me to meet with staff and the management team. It allows me to see the great progress we are making in our facilities and it is an easy way to stay in touch with everyone. It keeps me grounded and connected.” He often gathers ideas from Camrose staff. “I joke with them that this is not an inspection because we get enough of those already. I often ask two basic questions: what are you most proud of and what can we do to make your job easier? I like to hear their suggestions because often times they are the front line workers and have the best solutions when they see things everyday. Instead of being in board meetings all of the time, I like to get out where the action is and see what happens,” he added. “I think this is a fantastic facility considering its size and the programs that are offered. It offers a wide range of services. I’m proud of the quality of service and passion that the staff has in delivery of those services. For a facility of this size, we have a lot of programs and services. It is quite remarkable and

something we are proud of,” said Dumelie. “We are grateful to the community, the community board and foundation.” On Sept. 20, a grand opening of the renovated emergency department will be held for the community to see the final touches on the Phase 1 of renovations. “Speaking of fun days, Covenant Health is celebrating its 10th anniversary on Sept. 11. It is hard to believe 10 years have passed. We have a lot of fun activities planned to help us celebrate. We start off in Bonnyville, they are calling it the relay of the decade, and each site will carry the baton to the next site. It will be passing on of a gift from one site to another. We will end up in Medicine Hat after going through all of our sites along the way.” It is not only a milestone, but a chance for each community to celebrate. St. Mary’s works with the community to find what the needs are and how to offer those services within Camrose. “We are excited about
the work in the ER area. It will make things easier and safer for both staff and patients,” said Dumelie. “The support of the community, board and foundation has made this possible and it will make a huge difference to the flow on how we are going to be able to treat patients. It provides spaces for more dignified, private and safer care.” “When seniors come through emergency, we want to better serve their needs. We want to have conversations with local pharmacists and make sure care is carried on after patients leave the hospital. We want to connect patients without doctors, or those having trouble getting a physician, to a clinic and have a scheduled appointment in place before they leave the hospital,” Balancing the budget is one thing, but how to most effectively use the resources of people, information, buildings and finances are other important factors. Covenant Health is going back to more preventative ways to care for patients.

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING
EQUIPMENT FOR SALE
Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. 2. 3. 4.
To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water colour. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants. This year’s UDF program began July 26, 2018, starting with Zone A (in Area 1) and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discolouration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If a discolouration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Ashton Ford at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428. For additional information please visit the City of Camrose website at www.camrose.com.

BACK IN TIME
Submitted Harold Tipler of Camrose needed a car to drive to work for a farmer along the Alberta/Saskatchewan border back in the day. He scraped together $125 to buy a 1941 Chevrolet (he forgot to haggle). He soon realized it wouldn’t stay in third gear, so he learned how to drive, with two hands, in a hurry. He often pushed the car to the top of the hill and then jumped in to start it as it raced down the hill. Later that fall he needed money so he sold the car for $100 and a case of beer. Again, he forgot to haggle or even check the case of beer. He soon found out the case had eight full bottles and four empties.

Blackfalds, Bashaw RCMP arrest male after public tip received By Murray Green
A total of 41 charges were laid after Bashaw RCMP received a great tip and acting on it. “We appreciate successful outcomes when we utilize our specialized units such as Police Dog Services,” said Sergeant Bruce Holliday of the Bashaw RCMP Detachment. “This investigation drew on several components of our crime reduction strategy, such as intelligence gathering, information sharing across jurisdictions and public assistance.” On Aug. 29, at approximately 6 :15 p.m. Blackfalds RCMP responded to a call from the public regarding a suspicious male near Joffre in Lacombe County. The male suspect who was later identified, was on a rural property and appeared to be attempting to steal fuel. He was located by police and then attempted to f lee to a neighbouring vacant property. Police Dog Services (PDS) responded and containment of the area was set up. The suspect was tracked to an out-
building where he had been hiding from PDS and was arrested by Blackfalds and Bashaw RCMP members. He was transported to Blackfalds Detachment and treated by EMS for minor injuries sustained during his arrest. The suspect was also found to be linked to several other investigations. On Aug. 1, at approximately 12: 45 p.m., Bashaw RCMP were dispatched to a break and enter and vehicle theft from a rural property east of Bashaw. The suspect entered a residence and severely injured a dog and stole various items including a vehicle. He then returned to the same property after the vehicle broke down and proceeded to steal another vehicle. As a result of the severe injuries during the break and enter, the dog had to be euthanized. Over the days and weeks that followed, the suspect was identified as being responsible for a number of rural break and enters and thefts in multiple jurisdictions including Bashaw,
Wetaskiwin, Blackfalds and Rimbey. The assistance of the Forensic Identification Service (FIS) were utilized. A Ponoka male, who is known to police as a repeat offender, was remanded into custody. In addition to his 11 charges from the incident on Aug. 29, he was wanted on two outstanding warrants from Wetaskiwin and Bashaw. Police have laid a total of 41 charges on all incidents. Some of the charges include Break and Enter with intent, Possession of break-in instruments, Resist /obstruct a Peace Officer, Possession of a Weapon while Prohibited, Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, two counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime less than or Equal to $5,000 and four counts of Fail to comply with Probation Order. He was remanded into custody and was scheduled to appear on Sept. 4 in Wetaskiwin and Red Deer Provincial Courts.

Clean up after smoky summer By Murray Green
As 2018 burns its way into the history books as the fourth most destructive fire season in modern B.C. times, neighbouring Albertans are experiencing the detrimental effects of smoke damage to their properties, homes and businesses. With headlines like “wildfire smoke so thick it’s blocking out the sun,” and B.C. has the “worst air quality on the planet”, it’s not surprising that Alberta would feel the effects of the B.C. fires. FirstOnSite Restoration, Canada’s largest independent disaster restoration services provider was one of the earliest responders on site after the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires. The company actively assists with maintaining air quality in facilities used by first responders and critical businesses during wildfire events and has operations in Calgary, Edmonton, Grande Prairie and Medicine Hat. Here are the company’s top 10 smoke cleaning tips for homeowners, commercial property owners and businesses to restore their property after smoke damage. Smoke contamination can travel to areas of property and/or belongings that may not be visible to the untrained eye; hire a professional with specialized expertise in smoke cleaning to complete a proper assessment. If you do clean, remember that the environment may not be safe. Always protect yourself before beginning to clean fire residue: use a disposable dust mask or respirator, gloves and long sleeves or disposable coveralls. Smoke is attracted to the coldest areas of a home. These will be the areas that suffer the most damage. Swipe windows with a clean white tissue to determine potential contamination. Light brown dust is typical household dust. Grey-black dust: indicates contamination is present and area should be handled professionally to ensure safety. Do not turn on any electronics as the soot will contaminate the inside of the unit. Electronics and appliances that have been affected by soot should always be inspected by a professional.

Dispose of open or exposed food to avoid possible ingestion of toxic carcinogens. Keep doors and windows closed as much as possible to prevent smoke
from entering your home and/or business. Consider sealing windows and door frames with tape to prevent smoke from entering your home or
business if you are in close proximity to an active fire. Use an air purifier to help remove particulates from the air. Change furnace filters often – every few days or
weekly depending on severity of smoke and air quality. Call your insurance company to understand what is specifically covered under your policy.

It’s the Phone Book that never needs to hit the recycling bin… You know the ritual… Fall arrives and up to three ‘new’ phone books arrive at your doorstep. As usual, you reluctantly send each of the books from the previous year to Centra Cam Recycling Centre. (Many people, according to our research, question the reason that they need a different phone book annually.) Our ‘phone directory’ is different. Content changes daily. You can quickly search for any publicly-available residence or business number from Camrose and district. The content changes, seven days per week, in our remarkable, electronic “phone book.” You can place a free buy and sell ad, you can check the weather, get all breaking news and sports stories, read the Booster (or the Country Booster, or Super Booster). Check out who’s having a birthday, even do a crossword puzzle or read a joke. You might even find a new career opportunity. And, much more too! It started as a smarter phone book. Now it’s even better. If you haven’t checked us out lately, do so now! We’ve made a multitude of user-friendly changes.

Muise to choreograph Mamma Mia! By Murray Green
Dustin Muise, a former Camrose Academy of Dance participant, will be choreographing the Churchmice Players’ version of the hit Mamma Mia! in Camrose. The play will be coming to the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre in February 2019 (Feb. 8 to 18). Auditions will be held on Sept. 13 and 14 at 7 p.m. at the Camrose United Church. “I’m extremely excited to be coming home to work on Mamma Mia! I have participated in the arts all my life. I have taken 10 years of dance in multiple styles (tap, jazz, ballet, etc.) as well as I sang in multiple choirs and performed in many shows including Anne of Green Gables with the Churchmice back in 2010,” said Dustin. The 26-year-old most recently worked with The Little Mermaid with Stage-
works in Leduc. “Mamma Mia! is one of my favourite shows for the fun and pure joy it brings. I’m looking forward to showing Camrose a good time,” added Dustin. Camrose director Dave McDougall will be leading Mamma Mia! Theo Thirsk is the production manager for the show. ABBA’s hits tell the hilarious story of a young woman’s search for her birth father. This sunny and funny tale unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. Besides needing many dancing and singing performers, there are many positions on the production team that need to be filled to make Mamma Mia! come alive. The Churchmice Play-
ers are looking for set construction builders, painters, backstage crew, makeup and hair specialists, costume seamstresses and dressers. If you would like to contribute to the production, attend the auditions, visit The Churchmice Players’ booth at Community Registration Night on Sept. 6 at the Fieldhouse or contact Theo by emailing churchmiceplayer@gmail.com. People worldwide have fallen in love with the characters, the story and the music that make it the ultimate feel-good show. The Churchmice Players will show A Christmas Carol at the Bailey Theatre from Nov. 30 to Dec. 8. Ironically, the group has already decided to take on Disney’s Littlest Mermaid in 2020.

The Camrose Kodiaks and the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre will be another Kodiaks Family Movie Matinee and Barbecue on Sunday, September 16. The barbecue, with help from friends from Mr. Mikes Steakhouse Casual in Camrose, will begin at 12:30 p.m. and the movie starts at 2 p.m. The family movie Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle is free admission, but you have to receive a ticket in advance of the show. “Join the Kodiaks in a special presentation and
meet the players,” said Boris Rybalka, coach and general manager of the Kodiaks. Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle is a 2017 adventure comedy film based on a previous movie. Part of the Jumanji franchise, the film is a sequel to the 1995 Jumanji, which was based on the 1981 children’s book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg. It tributes Robin Williams, the star of the first film, by mentioning his character’s name. In addition, a replica of the board game piece used by Williams’ character also
appears as a clue for the Jumanji game’s new players. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, and Bobby Cannavale. Set 21 years after Jumanji, it follows four teenagers who are transported into the video game world of Jumanji and play as their chosen characters. Joining another player, they must overcome the game’s magical power to win and return home. The Kodiaks will be accepting donations to present to a local charity if you so choose.

Prepare for university to have a good year By Murray Green
You have finished high school and now it’s an exciting time to transition into college or university. It’s time to start thinking about and preparing for their first year after high school. Post-secondary school is not like high school, and the workload, expectations and independence can catch some students off guard. Get ready and familiarize yourself with your new college or university and it can make a huge difference once classes start. Here are five tips to help get ready for their first year. Be social. Today’s youth are already active on social media. It is their top source of information. Seek out where your school is on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and the Internet. They will be providing key information about upcoming events and resources available for incoming students. If you come across any online groups, join in the conversation. You may make some new friends before the school year even begins. Get to know the school and surrounding neighbourhood. Many schools offer times in the summer when you can visit and tour the campus, check out the facilities and amenities, check out the area around the campus, pick up your student card, engage with various student organizations and clubs, complete any postadmission requirements and meet other students who will be starting with you—and facing many of the same apprehensions and challenges. Find a place to live. Maybe you have applied for residence and hope to live on campus. But space is limited and these spots
are often not guaranteed. It won’t hurt to browse some of the off-campus housing available. It is also wise to review your rights and responsibilities as a tenant, especially if this will be your first time living away from your parents’ home. Start a list. There are a lot of items you’ll want to have at school with you— from academic requirements to personal items. Start a list of those things you want to take and post it on your bulletin board or the refrigerator so that you can easily update it if something new comes to mind. Build this list throughout the summer so that when it’s time to pack you will already know everything you are going to need. Save. There are costs associated with post-secondary school that you didn’t have to worry about in high school. Besides tuition, you will have to buy your books and any supplies specific to your program. There is rent to pay and food to buy. And that says nothing for the incidentals—after all, you will also want to maintain some sort of social life to balance with your studies. Make a budget and start saving. You can also seek out some financial help. Many students don’t realize how many bursaries, grants and scholarships are there, waiting to be tapped. A quick Google search will uncover several opportunities for financial help. It is never too late to apply. There are also many financial management seminars available at colleges and universities that offer the support of campus experts.
Motorists are reminded that students go back By Murray Green
The Camrose RCMP, Camrose Police Service and Camrose County Protection Services all remind motorists that students are going back to school today. For children this is an exciting time of year and they may forget basic road safety rules as they walk, bicycle or ride the bus to school. Motorists are urged to use caution when driving through residential areas and to adhere to speed limits in school and playground zones. Make sure your child’s
walk to school is a safe route and your child is familiar with it. Wait until traffic comes to a stop before crossing. Make sure drivers see you before you cross. Always stop and look both ways before crossing the street. Cross streets only at crosswalks and learn to look to the left, the right and then left again before proceeding, even at intersections with pedestrian walk signs. Wait for the bus in a safe place well back from the edge of the road.
Always wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before leaving the curb. Remain seated and do not move around on the bus. Never distract the bus driver. Always follow his or her instructions. Wear a properly-fitted helmet, and have clothes that are suited for cycling. Have your child’s bikes fitted properly and in good working order. Know and obey all traffic rules, signs and signals. At intersections, get off your bike and walk across. Examine the road
ahead and obey posted speed limits. Always be prepared to slow down or stop. Do not drive while distracted–always be alert of your surroundings. Use caution when approaching intersections or mid-block crosswalks. Be cautious in parking lots or when backing out of a parking stall or driveway. Watch for kids between parked vehicles and on sidewalks. The speed limit in a school zone is 30 km/h per hour unless otherwise posted. A school zone is in

Shopping can be an enjoyable activity for the whole family; it teaches your child skills and behaviors that they will use throughout their life. It can however, also be difficult, especially when children misbehave. Lowe’s supports women’s shelter By Murray Green
This month Rona and Lowe’s corporate stores in Canada will support a local cause through a fundraising campaign and corporate donation.. Camrose supports the Camrose Women’s Shelter Society. Lowe’s Canada, a leading home improvement company operating or servicing over 630 corporate and affiliated stores under different banners, launched its national Heroes campaign. This year, for the very first time, every Lowe’s, Rona and Reno-Depot corporate store in the country will support a non-profit organization or public
school in the community by collecting donations to help it fulfill its mission or carry out a specific project. A total of over 260 local organizations will be financially supported by this campaign throughout September. Rona Camrose employees, for their part, chose to support the Camrose Women’s Shelter Society. “At Lowe’s Canada, our purpose is to help people love where they live, and that goes beyond our stores. It’s important to us to make a tangible difference in the communities we serve across the country,” said Jean-Sébastien Lamoureux, senior vice-president, communications, public
affairs and compliance at Lowe’s Canada. “The Heroes campaign gives our employees the opportunity to get involved with a local organization of their choice to help carry out inspiring projects and improve the lives of the people around them every day. This campaign has run in our Lowe’s stores across the country for several years.” From now until Sept. 30, customers from the Camrose area will be invited to make a donation to support the Camrose Women’s Shelter Society. Lowe’s Canada will match 50 per cent of all customer donations up to $2,000 per store.

Check insurance before going back to school By Murray Green
Before you send students or yourself to university, there are many things to consider. Clothing, text books, housing, developing a personal budget–it’s an exciting, but labour-intensive endeavor. With all the obvious checked off, one area parents may not consider is to ensure their child is adequately protected from an insurance perspective. Alex Walker, national director, claims relations
for RSA Canada, offers information for parents with children attending university in the fall. When do you to get renters insurance? Find out if you are covered on campus. Most home insurance policies have some element of coverage for children under a specified age, while living in residence or away from school. Parents should review their policy limits, or contact their broker to see if
they have enough coverage in the event of a loss. Off-campus living needs additional coverage. If living off-campus, sharing an off-campus house or apartment with friends, a student may have to set up a separate tenant’s policy. Tenant’s insurance are often required when renting, but are usually quite affordable as long as there are three or less unrelated people sharing the same house or living in the same apartment.
Parents should ensure that their auto policy covers college-age children even while they are away. This way they are properly protected for accident benefits whether they are driving their parent’s car, or in another vehicle away from home. Parents should remind their children of the perils of ride sharing programs (such as Uber) where coverage and protection are a grey area. Most home insurance policies have some element
of liability coverage for children under a specified age while living in residence or away from school. Review policy limits and ensure that their children have enough coverage in the event of a loss. For more information on areas where students may, or may not be protected under their parent’s policy, contact your insurance provider.

PEROGY MARATHON
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Generations of the All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Camrose come together on Wednesdays for a pierogi (perogy) making marathon. Like a well-oiled machine, church members make anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000 every week for selling as part of funds raised to maintain the church. Some are frozen to be used at the annual pierogi supper, which will be held this year on Sept. 29 at the church located at 5402-53 Street.
Think outside the box for school lunches this year. Pulses such as chickpeas, lentils and beans offer an easy lunch alternative for parents who are looking for a new source of protein and fibre to pack in their child’s lunch box as another school year begins. “Many parents are looking for tasty and nutritious lunch ideas that their children will actually eat or a source of protein to replace peanut butter, which is often not allowed in schools due to allergies,” said Debra McLennan, food and nutrition coordinator with Alberta Pulse Growers (APG) and a registered dietitian. “Pulses are a delicious source of protein and other nutrients that are easy to add into lunches to give kids the energy they need for a busy school day.” The Alberta Pulse Growers recipe for Red Lentil and Roasted Carrot Dip is a simple dish that packs six grams of protein and four grams of fibre into a 60 mL serving. This dip is a delicious, versatile recipe that can be used as a spread for breads and wraps that pairs well with fillings like lettuce, tomato, cucumber, spinach, green onion and assorted coloured peppers. Children also enjoy it for dunking vegetables and crackers. Using roasted carrots adds a sweetness along with an appealing orange colour to the dip. Another student-friendly recipe that’s a great addition to lunches or snackson-the-go is APG’s Cinnamon and Sugar Roasted Chickpeas. Loaded with five grams of protein and three grams of fibre in a 60 mL serving, these chickpeas can easily be eaten as a crunchy snack, added to salads or tossed into your favourite granola. Both recipes mentioned are gluten-free and vegetarian. View the recipes on the Alberta Pulse Growers website (https://albertapulse. com/recipe/) offers many other recipes that feature chickpeas, beans, lentils and field peas in appetizers, soups, salads, main courses and desserts. The Alberta Pulse Growers Commission represents 6,000 growers of field pea, dry bean, lentil, chickpea, faba bean and soybean in Alberta. Its vision is to have Alberta pulses recognized by consumers as environmentally friendly, healthy, nutritious, and recognized by all producers as being an essential element in a sustainable cropping system.

Kodiaks open pre-season with tourney By Murray Green
Camrose Kodiaks lost a defensive 2-1 battle to the much improved Drayton Valley to start the preseason at the Encana Arena on Aug. 29. The Thunder was heard in the first period as they scored twice and out shot Camrose 16-2. But, the last two periods belonged to the Kodiaks and they scored in the third to make it a close contest. The hardest working Kodiak, Colson Gengenbach, had his shot cross the line on a power play early in the third frame. Goalie Griffin Bowerman stopped 19 of 21 shots, while Roddy Ross turned away all 11 shots he faced. Team Black defeated team White 6-2 in the annual Ray McIsaac Cup game, Aug. 26. Luig i Benincasa scored twice to lead Team Black on offence. Brad Stiedhuhar, Noah Hackett, Dominik Cesarz and Cale Chalifoux all supplied single tallies for the winning squad. Carson Welke and Ryan Schendel notched single markers for Team White. In goal, Luke Lush stopped 18 of 20 shots, Bowerman turned away nine of 10 shots, Cooper Kennedy made 14 of 19 saves and Ross stopped 13 of 14 shots directed his way. Exhibition season

Alberta Junior Hockey League regular season at home with two games. They tangle with Okotoks on Sept. 14 and meet the Drumheller Dragons on Sept. 15 in the Encana Arena. Camrose will host the showcase series of games on Sept. 28 and 29. Bear facts
You may have seen the changes in the Encana Are-
na to better serve Kodiak fans. Skyboxes have always been popular with fans. Now, they created sky lounge seats so regular fans can enjoy a great view and have a beverage at the same time. In section Y on the third level, the Kodiaks will be selling four sections individually at a per game rate or a yearly rate. A total of 15 tickets are included in
your lounge package. You will receive beverage service at your lounge during the game, so you don’t need to miss any of the action. What you may have not noticed so far, is the fact that the Kodiaks will no longer be playing music between periods. Staff have listened to fans and will stop the music in order that fans can engage in more conversation without
the loud noise in the background. The Kodiaks have jumped from 350 to 500 season ticket holders (due to both increased community support and a promise of a less noisy building). Everyone who becomes a season ticket holder will go into a draw, and if the Kodiaks sell 800 season passes by Sept. 14, one lucky fan will win $10,000.

Forgotten 1932 Plymouth turns into a gem By Murray Green
Several years ago, Wayne Lysons wanted a project to keep him busy. He went to a farm auction sale near Meeting Creek to view a 1932 Plymouth three window coupe that was included in the sale. Plymouth was a brand of automobiles based in the United States, produced by the Chrysler Corporation and its successor DaimlerChrysler. The brand first appeared in 1928 in the United States to compete in what was then described as the low-priced market segment dominated by Chevrolet and Ford. “There wasn’t much left of the car at that time. It was pretty much just the cab and that might be stretching it. It was in rough shape and a car that nobody else wanted,” Wayne recalled. “However, another fellow, Ron Pilger from Camrose, and I were bidding against each other.” One of them came to their senses and stopped bidding. The other, Wayne, went home with a shadow of what was once a good looking car. “I’m a body man and I wasn’t sure that I could do it. But it progressed nicely and I’m very happy with the way it turned out. I was looking for a ‘30s car and recognized it for what it was. I bought it in 1995 and finished it in 2007. It sat for a few years and then it took me seven years to complete, so started in 2000,” he explained. Wayne put a Chevrolet engine and transmission in the car that included all new running gear. “I rebuilt it to original as possible. The only thing is that I shaved the door handles and hinges. The other thing is that I moved the gas tank to make it look nicer.” The Plymouth automobile was introduced at Madison Square Garden on July 7, 1928. It was Chrysler Corporation’s first entry in the low-priced field, which at the time was already dominated by Chevrolet and Ford. Plymouths were initially priced higher than the competition, but offered standard features such as internal expanding hydraulic brakes that Ford and

Chevrolet did not provide. Plymouths were originally sold exclusively through Chrysler dealerships, offering a low-cost alternative to the upscale Chrysler-brand cars. The logo featured a rear view of the ship Mayflower which landed at Plymouth Rock in Plymouth, Massachusetts. However, the inspiration for the Plymouth brand name came from Plymouth binder twine, produced by the Plymouth Cordage Company, also of Plymouth. The name was chosen by Joe Frazer due to the popularity of the twine among farmers. The origins of Plymouth can be traced back to the Maxwell automobile. When Walter Chrysler took over control of the troubled Maxwell-Chalmers car company in the early 1920s, he inherited the Maxwell as part of the package. After he used the company’s facilities to help create and launch the
six-cylinder Chrysler automobile in 1924, he decided to create a lower-priced companion car. So for 1926, the Maxwell was reworked and rebadged as the low-end four-cylinder Chrysler “52” model. In 1928, the “52” was once again redesigned to create the Chrysler-Plymouth Model Q. The Chrysler portion of the nameplate was dropped with the introduction of the Plymouth Model U in 1929. While the original purpose of the Plymouth was to serve a lower-end marketing niche, during the Great Depression of the 1930s the division helped significantly in ensuring the survival of the Chrysler Corporation in a decade when many other car companies failed. Beginning in 1930, Plymouths were sold by all three Chrysler divisions (Chrysler, DeSoto, and Dodge). Plymouth sales were a bright spot during this dismal automotive peri-
od and by 1931 Plymouth rose to number three in sales among all cars. Chrysler introduced a straight-4 derivative of their new Flathead straight-6 in 1926. Ini-
tially used by Chrysler, the straight-4 became Plymouth and Dodge light trucks in 1929, lasting in production through 1933.

Alberta strengthens impaired driving laws to save lives By Murray Green
New laws have come into force this year to deter impaired driving, reduce collisions and save lives. The Government of Alberta passed an act to Reduce Cannabis and Alcohol-Impaired Driving. “The loss and suffering that result from impaired driving are unacceptable and entirely preventable. As the country prepares for legalization of cannabis, we’ve strengthened our provincial impaired driving sanctions to make our roads safer and continue to deter impaired driving whatever the source of impairment may be,” said Brian Mason, Alberta Minister of Transportation. “The Alberta RCMP is committed to raising awareness of the devastation experienced by individuals, families and communities that all too often result from driving impaired. We will continue to take impaired drivers, whether by drugs or alcohol, off Alberta roadways and anticipate these laws will help more people think twice about getting behind the wheel if they are under the influence,” said Supt. Gary Graham, officer in charge, Alberta Integrated Traffic Services. “MADD Canada welcomes these measures to prevent impaired driving. The provisions in this bill send a powerful message that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be tolerated, and those who ignore the law will face strong consequences,” said Andrew Murie, CEO, MADD Canada “Impaired driving, whether due to alcohol or drugs, is a serious traffic and public safety issue. It’s
for this reason that AMA supports these changes to Alberta’s impaired driving laws to improve our overall safety. These changes provide the framework needed for Alberta to continue its progress in deterring and dealing with impaired driving,” continued Jeff Kasbrick, vice president, government and stakeholder relations, Alberta Motor Association. All criminally impaired drivers (those with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or more, drivers impaired by drugs, or a combination of alcohol and drugs, and drivers who fail or refuse to comply with a demand for a breath or blood sample) will receive a 90-day licence suspension followed by mandatory participation in a one-year ignition interlock program. Should the driver choose not to participate in ignition interlock, the licence suspension will remain in place during this one-year term. These are provincial sanctions. Drivers will continue to be subject to criminal charges and all the associated penalties imposed by the courts, in addition to the provincial consequences. There will be zero tolerance for Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Program drivers for cannabis and illegal drugs in the bloodstream, in addition to alcohol. GDL drivers found with any amount of alcohol, cannabis, illegal drugs or their combination will find the driver subject to a 30-day licence suspension, seven-day vehicle seizure and a lengthened term in the GDL program. (GDL drivers who meet the requirements for criminallevel impaired driving will be subject to the sanctions
and penalties mentioned above.) There will be limits on the number of reconsiderations the board is required to hear in the absence of new evidence. This legislation also lays the groundwork for the province to enforce upcoming changes to federal impaired driving charges in the Criminal Code of Canada – specifically, proposed blood drug concentration limits for cannabis and cannabis/alcohol combination, similar to the legal limits that already exist for alcohol. Once federal legislation receives royal assent, the Government of Alberta will be ready to enforce criminal-level provincial sanctions (90-day licence suspension followed by one-year ignition interlock and vehicle seizure) for the new drug offences, the same way they are applied to criminal-level alcoholimpaired driving. In May 2017, the Alberta Court of Appeal ruled that parts of the province’s licence suspension legislation were unconstitutional–specifically, indefinitely suspending a driver’s licence upon the laying of a criminal charge until that charge was resolved in court. T his leg islation addresses this decision by instituting a fixed-term suspension of 90 days. The licence suspension can now be triggered if the investigating police officer has reasonable grounds to believe that the driver is criminally impaired by alcohol or drugs, which includes testing by an approved screening device and the Standardized Field Sobriety Test.

Q.
How can I establish a “Fund” with the Battle River Community Foundation?
A.
A Fund may be launched with as little as $1,000 and a pledge to grow the Fund to $10,000 within ten years. Additional contribution may be made monthly, yearly or as a onetime donation. When the fund reaches $10,000, a permanent endowment fund, named as you wish, is established. It will then start giving back to the community, in accordance with your instructions, forever.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
PERSONAL LOST THAT LOVING FEELING? Find it with a personal ad in The Camrose Booster classifieds. Ph. 780-672-3142. DRINKING A PROBLEM? Alcoholics Anonymous, call 780-672-9406 or 780-608-8798.

WANTED WILL ACCEPT OLD VEHICLES, machinery, scrap iron, etc. Car batteries (will pay for). Call 780-672-6917 or 780686-5211.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Colour me fun By Lori Larsen
In celebration of the return to school, CityLights Church is hosting a ColourCity free event targeted at Grade 7 to 12 students on Sept. 14 beginning at 7 p.m. “Anyone is welcome,” said Bryan Darnell, one of the event organizers. “We want to start the school year off with a bang.” The event will take place in the CityLights Church parking lot and promises to be a colourful, fun time. Attendees should be warned that the event involves throwing colourful dye-drenched baking soda into the air and allowing it to land on attendees and the property they have with them. Clothing and other personal items may be affected by the substance. Event organizers are recommending that attendees bring a white t-shirt, colourful sunglasses and a friend and, once again, warning–there will be some dye involved. R eg istration is required by telephoning 780-672-4261.
Four local runners complete Edmonton Marathon By Murray Green
They call the Edmonton Marathon the “friendly” marathon. Well, it certainly was friendly to four local runners. Approachable, accessible and good-natured, this is the marathon where you will feel right at home. Marathoners say even the course is a bit friendlier – flat and fast to get you to that finish line with a strong qualifying time or a personal best. The 27th running of the marathon on Aug. 19 featured 884 runners with 345 women and 536 men in the event.

Coen farm hosts energy workshop By Murray Green
Farm and ranches in Alberta are always looking for ways to be more efficient in order to save time and money, and minimize adverse impacts on the land. The topic Rural Routes to Climate Solutions is going to give you a crash course on how to make your farm or ranch more energy efficient, Sept. 7. Join Ferintosh area’s Coen Farm location for a chance to learn how to run your own farm energy efficiency audit that goes well beyond changing light bulbs (although, that is important too). They will look at how to reduce your heating and electricity costs and check out some innovative water management techniques that also reduce energy consumption. Michael, Laura and Takota Coen operate Coen Farm. In 1988, no longer being able ignore the decline in health of their land, animals and family they decided to make the change to organic farming. Today, they continue that tradition and with the addition of permaculture design and holistic management of their 250 acre farm. By the end of this field day, you’ll have the knowledge to go over your farm or ranch with a fine toothed comb in order to determine where you can apply energy saving techniques that will benefit your land, family and bottom line. You will also have the opportunity to chat with other producers who are experimenting with different methods to make their farms more energy efficient. A potluck supper is planned in the evening to keep the farm energy efficiency discussion going. It is an opportunity to sit down and enjoy a meal with other producers as a busy summer comes to a close. This workshop pairs well with the Farm Energy workshop which will cover on-farm solar, wind and geothermal and take place this December. Rural Routes to Climate Solutions is a program of the Stettler Adult Learning Centre. It empowers agricultural producers in Central Alberta with climate solutions that benefit farms and ranches.
