Some will say that life was simpler decades or a century ago. Some will say that living off the land was actually an easier, more satisfying way of living compared to the complex hustle and bustle of today. Debate on these matters will be never-ending and without clear-cut consensus. Machinery Day at the Camrose & District Centennial Museum is a wonderful way to get a glimpse of what living was like for those who homesteaded, farmed, worked and operated small businesses in this area from the early 1900s and beyond. You will hear the sounds of vintage tractors and automobiles. You will marvel at the work of an old-time blacksmith. You will be able to reminisce and visualize years gone by as you walk through buildings built over 100 years ago. Let your imagination wander back to prairie fields in the fall as you enjoy a mini-threshing demonstration. And, take time to learn what your ancestors may have used for everyday life, school and worship as you view artifacts in each of the unique buildings on the local museum grounds.
Machinery Day at the Camrose Museum takes place Sunday, September 16th from 12 noon to 5 p.m.

Letters to the Editor What I learned from Gates, Leonardo
Does someone who lived 500 years ago have anything to teach us? Well, someone who is very much alive right now, an icon of technology, business and philanthropy, thinks so. Bill Gates–the nerdy young man who quit Harvard before graduating because it had nothing more to teach him (at least, nothing he wanted to learn), became Microsoft billionaire and then morphed into a global philanthropist. Gates thinks someone who lived 500 years ago has something to teach us. Last May, as he has done for several years now, he recommended five books for summer reading. I decided I’d read them. If someone with the kind of mind Gates has thinks they have something to offer, they must be worth exploring. One of them was Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson. ***
I learned much about the man whose most famous paintings are Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, who is also famous for his drawing of a perfectly proportioned man spread-eagle inside a circle and square, known as Vitruvian Man. I learned his name was actually just Leonardo. I always thought that “da Vinci” was his last name. In fact, “Vinci” was the name of the village near Florence where he was born. His name means, Leonardo from Vinci–like you might say Norm from Camrose. His parents did not marry one another. He grew up in several different homes. He was not well educated. As a young man, his first employment was in an artist’s guild. At a later stage, his main official job was as the main organizer and creator of fantastical theatrical productions. He had a dominant characteristic–an insatiable curiosity. He was a master at seeing patterns. He thought of himself as a man of science and engineering. He pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, optics, botany, geology, water flows and weaponry. He was the archetype Renaissance Man. ***
In researching his book, Walter Isaacson’s main source was Leonardo’s original notebooks–more than 7,200 pages of Leonardo’s notes and scribbles. Leonardo could not afford to waste paper so he crammed both sides of every sheet of paper with drawings and jottings and math calculations and notes on weapons of war, riddles, and studies for paintings. His “to do” lists included things like “Get the master of arithmetic to show you how to square a triangle” and “Draw Milan” and “Describe the tongue of the woodpecker.” Isaacson comments, “Had he been a student at the outset of the 21st century, he may have been put on a pharmaceutical regimen to alleviate his mood swings and attention deficit disorder…we are fortunate that Leonardo was left to his own devices to slay his demons while conjuring up his dragons.” “The 15th century of Leonardo, Columbus and Gutenberg was a time of invention, exploration and the spread of knowledge by new technologies. In short, it was a time like our own. That is why we have so much to learn from Leonardo. His ability to combine art, science, technology, the humanities, and imagination remains an enduring recipe for creativity. So, too, was his ease at being a bit of a misfit: illegitimate, gay, vegetarian, lefthanded, easily distracted, and at times heretical. “Florence flourished in the 15th century because it was comfortable with such people. Above all, Leonardo’s relentless curiosity and experimentation should remind us of the importance of instilling, in both ourselves and our children, not just received knowledge but a willingness to question it–to be imaginative and, like talented misfits and rebels in any era, to think different.”
Letters are welcomed but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only name of writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Federal holiday
I recently read on Google that Ottawa is considering declaring a brand new federal holiday. This brand new holiday will serve as a continual reminder to us Canadians of the impact of residential schools on our Indigenous people. As I thought about this possible brand new federal holiday, I only had one question which came to my mind. What residential schools are they talking about? We never had any in our Town of Sedgewick, when I was a kid. So, I looked up in The Canadian Encyclopedia under the topic of residential schools. Residential schools were government sponsored religious schools established to assimilate Indigenous children into Euro-Canadian culture. Here are some key facts when it comes to residential schools. Residential schools were government sponsored schools run by churches. Their primary purpose was to integrate or assimilate Indigenous children into the mainstream Euro Canadian culture. Number of students
attended 50,000. Number of students who died 6,000 (estimate records incomplete). How long did they operate? Mohawk Institute in Bradford Ontario first accepted students in 1831. Gordon Residential school in Punnichy, Saskatchewan closed in 1996. That was how incomplete the records were. Now, I am sure all of these people had good intensions. The government was only trying to help these people who they viewed as barbarians become proper people. What they did not realize was that these people had a different culture, which was rather different than their culture. When the federal government creates this new holiday, I do encourage all of you to think about how we as people have come a long way from our forefathers way of thinking back in the late 1800s. Canada has room for all cultures and all different ways of thinking. Education should be used to help people and not brainwash the children into thinking our way. I am thinking about the NDP government when it comes to our new education curriculum. Lorne Vanderwoude, Camrose Asylum seekers
It is interesting to have debate on questions relating to immigration. However, it appears that Mr. West does not really desire a debate; rather he wishes to sling insults; so be it. What facts does West present to refute my position? As stated by federal
ministers of immigration, security, global affairs and the Prime Minister himself, all persons desiring to enter Canada are subject to the same background checks and accordingly must present required documents. The preferred place for doing this is their native country and then waiting there for approval. Asylum seekers present themselves at the border. This does not mean that checks are avoided. Yes, the individuals cross the border but are not admitted as immigrants. They remain in temporary accommodation pending approval or deported. Yes, Canada prefers to admit immigrants according to the point system so that preference is given to persons with needed skills and other abilities, for example, language to make adjustment to their new country easier. But asylum seekers are coming to avoid punishment for beliefs, violence and other life threatening dangers. Those coming from the Unites States fear deportation often after long term residence in the US to lawless, corrupt, violence ridden nations of Central America. Should we deny these people consideration? Consideration is what they are given, not approval. Some politicians seek to gain a few votes by divisive statements and cultivating fear. These are not Canadian values. Canada is an open, welcoming country. Let’s keep it that way. Ron Williams, Camrose
***
We can indeed learn from a man who lived 500 years ago. We can also learn from the environment that allowed him to be such a genius. Let us appreciate our misfits and rebels–Leonardo in the 15th century, or Gates who was also a misfit and rebel as a young person. And let us try to appreciate whoever is the person in our lives we most don’t understand. There’s probably something of value to learn there.

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a grant to the Town of Daysland. The grant is from income from the Don and Mary Ann Pfeffer Fund and the Robert and Darlene Wild Fund, which was set up to provide funding assistance for operation of the Sunbeam Drop-In Centre and the Daysland Arena. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support projects, programs and facilities, such as this, in East Central Alberta which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually, to support local projects and organizations. Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $5,835,000 to support community programs and facilities like those at the Daysland Sunbeam Drop-In Centre.

UNIDIRECTIONAL FLUSHING Why the City of Camrose is implementing the Unidirectional Flushing (UDF) Program: 1. 2. 3. 4.
To maintain and improve the City’s water quality. To improve water flow and pressure in the water distribution system. To reduce bacterial growth, restore disinfectant residual, and improve water colour. Unidirectional Flushing uses 40% less water than traditional flushing programs due to increased water velocity. 5. In addition to scouring the water pipes, the UDF Program also gives the City the opportunity to check, exercise, and maintain all water valves and hydrants. This year’s UDF program began July 26, 2018, starting with Zone A (in Area 1) and will continue for 2-3 months. Water service should not be disrupted during the flushing process. There may be a slight drop in pressure or a presence of discolouration in the water from the minerals and sediments being flushed from the pipes. If a discolouration is noticed, please turn the tap off for 15 minutes and flush from your bathtub tap until the water is clear. If there are any questions or concerns in regards to the Unidirectional Flushing Program please feel free to contact Ashton Ford at the City of Camrose Engineering Department at 780-672-4428. For additional information please visit the City of Camrose website at www.camrose.com.

Cannabis included in bylaws By Lori Larsen
During the Sept. 4 regular council meeting, City of Camrose council approved the Land Use Amendment (cannabis regulations), Smoke Free Bylaw and Business Licensing Bylaw to include regulations of how recreational cannabis will be sold and dealt with in Camrose. Amendments to the Land Use Bylaw ensure the legal sale and production of cannabis will be regulated with due regard to public safety and the City of Camrose stakeholders. As per provincial regulations and City of Camrose bylaws, any cannabis retail store must be at least 100 metres (330 feet) away from any site being used for a provincial health facility or public or private education facility. Other regulations within the bylaws state that cannabis retail stores must refuse entry to minors as well as any person who appears to be intoxicated or impaired or whose behaviour becomes disorderly. Retail stores dealing with recreational cannabis will not be able to operate between the hours of 2 a.m. and 10 a.m. and must only hire employees that are at least 18 years of age. Amendments to the Smoke-free bylaw included cannabis, with rules against smoking within 10 metres of a playground, park (which includes the City’s walking trails), seasonal skating rink, skate park, bike park, sports field, and water spray park or toboggan hill as illustrated on the City of Camrose Smoke Free map available at www.camrose. ca/smokefree. No smoking (tobacco or cannabis) will be permitted within five metres of the doorway of any public building, restaurant, patio, public housing. Anyone caught doing so may be issued a fine of $200 for first time offences. For more information on the approved bylaws or to view the Smoke Free map visit the city website at www.camrose.ca/.

Chamber hears presentation on Edmonton airport By Lori Larsen
Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce encourages residents to nominate and vote for their picks for the 34th annual Business of Excellence Awards. The Business Excellence Awards are held each year in recognition of the outstanding contributions made by Camrose and area businesses. In celebration, the Chamber invites residents, businesses and guests to join them during the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce Business Awards of Excellence gala to be held on Oct. 18 starting at 6 p.m. in the Camrose Resort and Casino. For more information on the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce visit the website at camrosechamber.ca/
EIA speakers
Chamber members were presented with information from representatives of Edmonton International Airport (EIA) on the growth of the airport and benefits provided to Camrose businesses. EIA director of real estate and investment attraction, Geoff Herdman informed attendees about the constant growth and expansion of the airport and how EIA desires to work with Camrose on providing services to enhance Camrose business. “We look at things at how much investment we attract and how many jobs we create,” began Herdman, adding, since he began in 2014 to the end of 2018,
Chamber news
On Sept. 5, the Chamber started off the season of general luncheon meetings at the Camrose Regional Exhibition, welcoming new members Jackie Lovely, Lindsey Meijer (Happy Valley Turkey Farm), Lorne Haugen and Rick Lakaruik (Back40 Distillery), Tom Smith, Alberta representative CN, Adut Mabior (Futurized Media Marketing) and Dan Faithfull (Save-On-Foods).

they have created over 3,000 jobs at the airport. “Our mission is to drive regional economic prosperity for aviation and commercial development not just in Leduc and Edmonton, but our catchment area all over northern Alberta and Camrose is definitely part of the area we are trying to impact. Herdman indicated that in terms of passenger traffic in 2015-16 EIA experienced a bit of a bumpy ride but have since had some recovery primarily in the domestic and international travel side. “We are doing about half the volume in bringing labour into oil sands work camps. The recovery in passenger traffic is in other types of business and tourism.” He spoke about cargo growth as very important from a regional economic perspective. “Getting your goods, people and services to market, connecting to the global market place is important. We also have a huge focus on the agribusiness sector.” Herdman explained that development in EIA infrastructure includes four concepts focusing on destination, distribution and logistics, industrial and aviation/technology. He further explained that Alberta is viewed by
many Europeans as a major destination often described as rugged and sexy. “When you think about tourism and look at drawing on the market you have to figure your mind set into the company’s (coming into Alberta) mind. When you think rugged Alberta you think dog sledding, mountain climbing, things like the Big Valley Jamboree are huge draws.” With regards to distribution and logistics Herdman said. “We are looking at building supply chains to places like Camrose so you can export agribusiness products and things of that nature.” Herdman said that infrastructure improvements included such things as the roads in and out of the airport and future development for the airport. “We are developing very quickly. “The airport is trying to drive innovation in our region. Innovation is one of the things that really drives sustainable economic growth. “We can help companies do proof and concept testing, trialing and business development. Partnering with an airport, such as ourselves, has huge credibility when you start to do global marketing.” On a final note Herdman said, “It is not just
what is happening at the airport. This is a whole northern Alberta thing and we want to work with you, want to connect with economic development organizations and local businesses, who we can help with export. We are trying to find ways to help Alberta business expand and be successful.” EIA business development manager Alex Paterson explained to attendees the free Small Business Awards program offered from EIA to businesses in Camrose. “This is a program that can impact you, small business people in the region.” Patterson explained the program is free to sign up and involves monthly emails from EIA offering savings on parking options, accommodation, dining and whatever promotions are going on that month. “A big perk is once a month a name will be drawn, from the members of the program, to win a flight somewhere for two for free.” For more information on the Small Business Rewards Program contact Alex Patterson at email: apaterson@flyeia.com or by telephone at 780-782-0398 or sales representative EIA Corporate Rewards Program Anne Hayes at email is ahayes@flyeia.com or by telephone at 780-224-1861.

Erickson named Battle River School Division board chair By Murray Green
The students went back to school last week and the Battle River School Division has a new board chair and vice-chair as well.
The board of trustees s ele c t e d Nor m Erickson, trustee from the City of Camrose, as the board chair, after ser v i ng as v ice - cha i r last year.
Karen Belich, trustee for Camrose County North, was selected as the vicechair for 2018-19. Belich was elected to the board for the first time last fall
and is just completing her first year. The board also thanked Camrose County South trustee Kendall Severson, for his dedication to
the role of board chair for 2017-18. The first board meeting of the 2018-19 school year will take place on Sept. 27 at the BRSD office in Camrose.
Centra Cam restructuring to assist in operating costs By Lori Larsen
Since 1998, Centra Cam’s Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot (ECFD)has been serving the needs of residents in and around Camrose who have found themselves in emergency or challenging life situations. The organization has served approximately 1,200 individuals and families per year, through generous donations of gently used essential items by residents of Camrose and area, along with donations by organizations and grant givers. The mandate of the ECFD is to provide necessary emergency clothing or household items to people in need, in an effort to assist them in getting through difficult times and getting back on their feet. Unfortunately, due to changing times, ECFD is experiencing financial strains and in an effort to ensure the service continues to remain available to
those who need it, Centra Cam administration has had to restructure the way business is conducted at the ECFD. Centra Cam executive director Roxanna Skjonsberg explains. “We are committed to helping individuals and families who are truly in need, however, we have come to a point where we can no longer afford to offer the services as they exist today.” Part of the restructure will see the Emergency Clothing and Furniture Depot open as a Thrift Store. “We would still have a number of referral agencies to grant a gift certificate or voucher for individuals and families in greater need, to be used at the Thrift Store,” said Skjonsberg. “But the Thrift Store (ECFD) would also be available to anyone struggling to make ends meet. They would be able to purchase essential items at reasonable prices.” The proposed new sys-
tem would have referring agencies distribute gift certificates or vouchers for a specified amount based on the referral agency’s assessment of the individual or family requiring assistance. The value on the gift certificate or voucher could then be used to acquire the necessary items by the individual or family specified on the referral. When the referring agency assesses the needs of the individual or family and feels that the needs exceed what would be appropriate on a gift certificate or voucher, they would contact Centra Cam
(ECFD) direct and abridge a staff member on the extenuating circumstances. Centra Cam Outlet Store is one of the main sources of funding for the ECFD and will continue to operate as a source of great value to residents of Camrose and area, carrying a variety of non-essential items. However, the funds generated from the Outlet store no longer meet the entire funding requirements of both the Outlet Store and the ECFD. “We have found ourselves in a position where the whole program is in danger of collapsing if we
can not come up with a new source of funding.” Generous donations
The ECFD relies on, and greatly appreciates, the generous donations of gently used items from residents of Camrose and area and the continued support from the community, organizations and grant givers. “The donations are a vital part of fulfilling the needs of our community,” commented Skjonsberg. “And the first priority of the ECFD (Thrift Store) will continue to be providing services to members of the community who are in need.” All donations will still be gratefully accepted at the ECFD and distributed to be used in the ECFD (Thrift Store) or to the Outlet Store. For more information on the restructure process or on donating to Centra Cam ECFD (Thrift Store), contact Centra Cam at 780-672-9995.

T he Great Deception What can you believe in today’s world of social media and mass media? We are constantly bombarded by images and stories. What is real? What is fake? Join us as we explore these questions and look closely at what is happening to us, our families and our friends around us. Grace Lutheran Church is organizing a series of four evenings dedicated to how we can protect ourselves from the evil one in the world.
You’re invited to join us to listen and discuss: September 12 – Magic, its origins. Fantasy or real? Do ouija boards reveal secrets from the dark?
September 26 – Ghosts, UFO’s, Fairies, Demons. What is New Age? Are dogs and children staring at nothing?
October 10 – Witches, Wicca, Satan, rituals. Who or what controls our world?
October 24 – Curses, spells. Can you stand up to
supernatural evil? How can you protect yourself. Can other religions help? Exorcism and deliverance. Full armour of God.
Leading these talks will be Ken Mah 780-679-8347, Pastor Greg Kjos and Father Joseph Jacobson. Please join us on any or all of these evenings beginning at

Theatre filled with plenty of exciting plays, music this fall By Murray Green
Scenic Route To Alaska stops at Bailey Theatre By Murray Green
Rose City Roots Music Society presents the band Scenic Route To Alaska at the Bailey Theatre on Friday, September 21 at 8 p.m. Scenic Route To Alaska is an Edmonton-based trio comprised of Trevor Mann as lead vocalist and guitar, Shea Connor on drums and Murray Wood on bass. They effortlessly weave catchy vocals and memorable melodies through rich arrangements. It’s a coveted combination within the crowded sphere of indie rock. Devoted fans of Scenic Route To Alaska have been thrilled by this fantastic band at the Canmore Folk Festival, Wild Mountain Music Festival, Wild Oats and Notes and many more such events. Substance and accessibility are often considered opposing forces when it comes to pop music, making it all the more impressive when a band like Scenic Route to Alaska delivers ample doses of both. They deliver effortlessly catchy vocals and memorable melodies through rich arrangements.
The Bailey Theatre will be kicking off its 201819 season with Stompin’ Taw Connors on Sept. 26. He will be singing favourites of his father, Canadian legend Stompin’ Tom Connors and a few of his own songs. The Bailey Buckaroos are back for another season of classic country music, beginning on Sept. 30. Great fiddling music will be provided by local legend Calvin Vollrath on Nov. 1. The last few years Ennis Sisters have put on a great Christmas show at the Bailey. Back by popular demand, on March 17, they will be bringing their own brand of Celtic music to the stage. Sean McCann, founder of Great Big Sea and solo artist in his own right, will be performing at the Bailey May 3. Tickets will be on sale soon. The Bailey Theatre
will host two dinner theatre presentations this fall. The Kelsey Drama Club will be presenting the farce Drinking Habits, running Oct. 18 to 20 and 25 to 27. The Churchmice Players will get everyone in the Christmas spirit with their rendition of A Christmas Carol Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 and Dec. 6 to 8. The Bailey Fall Fundraiser this year is A Taste of Camrose County on Nov. 16. The Bailey Theatre Society and Food Artisans of Camrose County will bring you a long table dinner lovingly prepared by Prairie Oven Caterers. It’s an evening to celebrate our community including the local food producers, artists and entertainers while supporting our historic Bailey Theatre. Infinite Imagination will present The Gong Show, Sept. 29. The Ed Sullivan show will be back
on November 17 and 18. The Bailey Theatre welcomes back the Battle River Big Band on Nov. 10 with Alive! featuring fresh, new concert jazz. The Bailey Theatre has always been a great place to see classic films and hold historical events. Canadian author Ted Barris will be a guest speaker on Nov. 9, bringing stories from 75 years ago when brave airmen, many Canadians, bombed dams in Nazi Germany. On Nov. 8 the classic movie The Dambusters will be shown as a prelude to the presentation. Rose City Roots Music Society have several folk and blues groups preforming including Scenic Route to Alaska on Sept. 21, Harpdog Brown Nov. 23 and Royal Foundry Jan. 11, 2019. Check online at bailey theatre.com for updates and added performances.

Update on Trans Mountain Pipeline By Kevin Sorenson, MP, Battle River-Crowfoot
“The Trudeau Liberals fall to earth, crushed by pipelines and carbon taxes.” While those are not my words, I certainly share the sentiment expressed by National Post columnist and CBC At Issue panelist Andrew Coyne. I also agree with him when he said the Liberals “are very good at the symbolic gesture, the leap of faith, the exuberant tossing of one’s hat over the wall. They are not so good at figuring out how to retrieve it.” In other words, they are all talk and no action which is evident in the fact that they have accomplished precious little in almost three years. Trudeau has mishandled the critical decisions necessary to get important resource projects underway. He vetoed the Northern Gateway pipeline and killed Energy East with last minute regulatory changes that favoured foreign imports over Canadian energy. For over a year and a half, Canadians have waited for Trudeau to come up with a concrete plan to ensure that the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion would be completed. Instead, he offered one delay after another and then ultimately, cost taxpayers $4.5 billion to buy a 60 year old pipeline and plans for a new one he can’t even build due to his government’s failures. On Thursday, August 30th, The Federal Court of Appeal ruled that the National Energy Board (NEB) failed to properly assess the risks posed by the increased tanker traffic resulting from the pipeline expansion. And that the federal government, despite their rhetoric, did not engage in meaningful consultations with First Nations. A week after this court decision came down, Trudeau still failed to respond quickly and decisively, despite the tremendous threat to oil and gas workers across this country and to many regional economies that stood to benefit from this project. This would include the 43 First Nation communities that have benefit agreements, worth $400 million, which now hang in the balance. The Trudeau Liberals also shot down a Conservative call for the House of Commons Standing Committee on Natural Resources to hold special meetings to probe how to improve the consultation process and find out what the Government’s next steps are. The Liberals refusal to answer these questions seems to hold true to Trudeau’s plan to phase out the energy industry. The leader of the United Conservative Party of Alberta, Jason Kenney, has proposed an excellent path forward beginning with an immediate recall of Parliament to debate legislation that would declare the NEB has no jurisdiction over tanker traffic. Also, so they could debate and adopt Bill S-245, the Trans Mountain Pipeline Act which was passed by the Senate on May 22. Senator Doug Black from Alberta received 78 per cent support from Senators representing all regions of Canada, for his bill that requested the Federal Government to declare the Trans Mountain Pipeline of national importance. Kenney also suggested that the Federal Government: withhold discretionary transfer payments to BC for jobs and infrastructure projects due to their obstructionist delays; immediately appeal the Court of Appeal decision to the Supreme Court; and withdraw Bill C-69 which overhauls and renames the Federal Environmental Assessment Act. I strongly agree with our Leader Andrew Scheer and UCP Leader Kenney, that Trans Mountain is crucial to oil and gas workers all across the country and most importantly, to the economic viability of Canada—a natural resource dependent nation. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or previous columns you may write me at 494550th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780608-4600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780-608-4603 or email Kevin.Sorenson.c1@parl.gc.ca.
A passion for the ear th’s well being By Lori Larsen
Passionate about preserving the earth and creating an awareness about the importance of our natural resources, Carson Hvenegaard dedicates his time and energy into creating a better tomorrow for future generations. Carson was born and raised in Camrose and proudly follows in the footsteps of his family who have contributed to the wellbeing of the Camrose community for years. In his third year of environmental science at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus, Carson admits that working with the environment has always been his interest. “I love spending time outdoors, keeping things the way they are and even making them better. It is a good way to help our planet and people as well.” Words he lives by as he is often seen trekking about Camrose on his bike. Inspired by younger generations and their desire and efforts to, not only recognize, but remedy some of the adverse affects on the planet, Carson strives to be a part of increasing awareness on the importance of making a positive impact on the earth. “Most people in Camrose have a good connection with nature because there are lots of opportunities to go into the valley with all the walking trails and greenspaces, plus there is a big farming community around us.” Carson feels fortunate that for the past two summers, he has been able to work in fields related to his
studies, but more importantly, educate residents on maintaining a healthy earth. “This year, my summer job was with the Battle River Watershed Alliance and the previous summer it was with the Camrose Greenspace and Wildlife Society. I really enjoyed helping people learn about nature and getting in touch with nature. A big part of both jobs was educating people and getting them connected, and I feel like I have had an impact. “I have also been volunteering with the Camrose Green Action Committee for just over a year. Part of that involves giving suggestions to council and doing research,” said Carson, adding with a degree of excitement that the committee is about to put forward a proposal to council on the plastic bag initiative. “Having a law or bylaw passed, even if it is a small thing, all goes toward supporting the cause.” Carson also works with Newo Global Energy (a notfor-profit organization) on developing programs and initiatives that will benefit a future of sustainable energy and benefiting communities and the planet. “I am really proud of Camrose,” noted Carson. “We have a lot of initiatives that are not even common in Canada.” Carson also spoke of the great work Augustana does in encouraging and creating awareness on environmental concerns. “Everyone is required to take an environmental course and sports, wildlife and aboriginal student groups are strong advocates of getting

out into nature and using the amazing trail systems in Camrose.” Carson’s determination to make a greener world also rubs off on the younger generations within the community as he speaks about the opportunities he has had to share his passion with them. “The Battle River Watershed Alliance have a field trip for every Grade 5 student in Camrose and around the Camrose watershed area. I really enjoyed working with the students. Also, through my jobs, I have had an opportunity to do nature walks with groups such as the Girl Guides.” His down-to-earth manner is apparent as he smiles thinking about the joy the children experienced just getting back to nature. “Seeing their happiness about being out and doing things, finding bugs in a river or berries, we even found a duck egg on one walk, is so cool.” As a lifelong, albeit still young, resident of Camrose, Carson recognizes the importance of giving back to a community that has supported him. “It makes me feel good about myself. Camrose is a great place and I am happy to have lived here and have gotten a lot out of it.” As for his passion for doing environmental work, he related, “It’s about giving back from me for the future.” Carson has two more years (including the present year) to finish his fouryear degree and although he has no definite plans past that, he is considering the possibility of continuing his education to include a masters in his line of study and possibly education or social enterprise. One thing is for certain, Carson has already established an amazing attitude of being part of and affecting positive change in the world. “There are lots of opportunities to do what you love, whether that is for the environment, art, politics or whatever, and make a difference, even if it seems really overwhelming to try to do something meaningful. Sometimes you have to create those opportunities yourself.” When it comes to doing his part and contributing to his community, Carson concluded, “A lot of things happen that may not be as big or organized as you think they are. It may be just a few people coming together and really being driven to do that.”

Buffaloes win two straight By Murray Green
The Camrose Buffaloes bantam and peewee teams have won two straight games early in the season. The bantam Buffaloes shifted the offence into high gear as they defeated the Edmonton Seahawks 52-18 on Aug. 30. The bantam Buffaloes are at home on Sept. 15 to take on the St. Albert Fury at 3 p.m. The peewee Buffaloes have been even more impressive with back-toback shut outs. On Aug. 30, the Buffaloes blanked the Seahawks 19-0. In the first game they shut out Wetaskiwin 60-0. The peewee Buffaloes are at home on Sept. 15 to take on the St. Albert Colts at noon. The atom Buffaloes are 1-1 after two games on Aug. 26. Camrose beat Spruce Grove 7-2 and lost 10-2 to the Edmonton Sea hawks. Away games are on Sept. 16 in Edmonton. Football Day
Minor Football Day in Camrose will be on Saturday, Sept. 15 with Edmonton Eskimos players and three games. As well as the peewee and bantam games at noon and 3 p.m., a flag football match is planned for 5:30 p.m. for the little players. A team from Beaumont will be the opposition.
Local dive team called By Murray Green
Search efforts continue in Gregoire Lake (approximately 40 km south east of Fort McMurray, near Highway 88) for a 16-year-old boy who went missing on Sept. 1. From the information police have received, it is believed a drowning occurred after he entered the water, while out on a watercraft. Physical dives were completed in the lake on Sunday and Monday by a volunteer dive team from Camrose, called Central Alberta Rescue Dive Society (CARDS). Due to shallow and rough water in the area, sonar and underwater cameras were used, but were limited in what they could provide emergency responders. Physical dives were completed in several locations in the lake. Wood Buffalo RCMP received a call for help at approximately 3:23 p.m. from a concerned boater regarding a 16-year-old boy who was on a small watercraft. The youth was observed falling into the water. The watercraft, that the youth was believed to be on, was later found washed up on shore.

Brausen, grandson hit the road together By Murray Green
George Brausen owns a 1930 Model A Ford. He encouraged his grandson Tommy to love vehicles as much as he does, so he built him a smaller replica to join him in parades and at car shows in the area. “I had the chassis of the car and built the cab from wood with a friend of mine, Ted Anderson,” recalled George. “The rest of the car was built by my son and myself.” The Ford Model A (also colloquially called the A-Model Ford or the A, and A-bone among rodders and customizers), was the second huge success for the Ford Motor Company, after its predecessor, the Model T. First produced Oct. 20, 1927, but not sold until Dec. 2, it replaced the venerable Model T, which had been produced for 18 years. This new Model A (a previous model had used the name in 1903-04) was designated a 1928 model and was available in four standard colors. “Everything is original except for the cab, the back fenders and the headlights,” added George. “We made a wooden cab because the body was shot and the top was cut off and they made a convertible out of it. One door was welded shut and the other one was missing. So, the body was completely shot.” The range of body styles ran from the Tudor at US $500 (in grey, green, or black) to the Town Car with a dual cowl at US $1,200. In March 1930, Model A sales hit three million, and there were nine body styles available. “I learned to drive on a Model A, so I always wanted to get one back,” said George, who was raised in the Ankerton area and lived in New Norway before moving to Camrose.” This engine provided 40 hp (30 kW; 41 PS). Top speed was around 65 mph (105 km/h). The Model A had a 103.5 in (2,630 mm) wheelbase with a final drive ratio of 3.77:1. The transmission was a conventional unsynchronized three-speed sliding gear manual with a single

speed reverse. The Model A had four-wheel mechanical drum brakes. The 1930 and 1931 models were available with stainless steel radiator cowling and headlamp housings. “In 1966, I moved to Daysland and apprenticed to be a mechanic and then went to New Norway to run the service station. I bought the Model A in about 1986-87, but I didn’t start working on it until about three years ago.” The Model A came in a wide variety of styles including a Coupe (Standard and Deluxe), Business Coupe, Sport Coupe, Roadster Coupe (Standard and Deluxe), Convertible Cabriolet, Convertible Sedan, Phaeton (Standard and Deluxe), Tudor Sedan (Standard and Deluxe), Town Car, Fordor (fivewindow standard, threewindow deluxe), Victoria, Town Sedan, Station Wagon, Taxicab, Truck, and Commercial.
“I drive my grandson around and we go get some ice cream sometimes,” said George. “I go to the Rosalind and Heisler parades. This is the first car show I’ve been to (Camrose).” The Model A was the first Ford to use the standard set of driver controls with conventional clutch and brake pedals, throttle, and gearshift. Previous Fords used controls that had become uncommon to drivers of other makes. The Model A’s fuel tank was situated in the cowl, between the engine compartment’s fire wall and the dash panel. It had a visual fuel gauge, and the fuel flowed to the carburetor by gravity. A rear-view mirror was optional. In cooler climates, owners could purchase an aftermarket cast iron unit to place over the exhaust manifold to provide heat to the cab. A small door provided adjustment of the amount of hot air entering
the cab. The Model A was the first car to have safety glass in the windshield “I took a riding lawn mower and cut the frame to build his vehicle. The
same guy, Ted, helped me build the replica for my grandson.” The Model A’s styling was led by Edsel Ford.

come to come and learn more about the growing field of genealogy. Shepard is a published author of several articles in Family Tree Magazine, Devon Family Historian, Perth County Profiles, The Chinook, Coontin Kin, Crossroads and Relatively Speaking. As a retired geologist,
he spends much of his time researching, writing and consulting on family history and many of his articles are rooted from stories about families that were both negatively and positively impacted by changes to their habitat and to disasters which sometimes overwhelmed them. Shepard also published
Surviving Mother Nature’s Tests: The effects climate change and other natural phenomena have had on the lives of our ancestors. The publication relates to many of the situations observed in nature over the past several centuries. Camrose branch of the Alberta Genealogical Society also welcomes anyone
interested in exploring their past and family history to come out to monthly meetings beginning on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. held at the Camrose Public Library. For more information on the Camrose branch visit the website at http://www.abge nealogy.ca/camrose-branch or telephone 780-608-6243.

Lyle Eugene Roth Lyle Roth of Tofield, AB passed away peacefully at the Bethany Rosehaven Centre on August 29, 2018 at the age of 84 years after a long illness of Vascular Dementia. Lyle was born on September 7, 1933 and lived most of his life on the farm eight miles south of Tofield with his parents Lee and Mary Ann Roth and two sisters Whilma and Lily. Lyle attended Farmington School for one year, then went to Bardo School up to grade nine. He would often share memories of riding horses to and from school with the neighbours. Lyle married the love of his life, Annie Irma Friesen, of Duchess, AB on November 12, 1953 at Duchess Mennonite Church. Together they started their home on the family farm by Tofield and, in the winter months, Lyle worked at Dodd’s Coal Mine. They decided to quit farming and move into Tofield where he worked at Arnett Motors and drove the school bus for Tofield School. Soon following, they moved to a house just east of Tofield and Lyle worked on a mixed farm owned by Boyd and Verba Stauffer. Their next move was to Ryley, where he delivered bread and baked goods for Verners Bakery to the local town folk and farmers. This memory of delivering baked goods had a special impact on Lyle. He would often share a story about some of the folks he met along the way. In 1966, Lyle and Annie moved to Camrose and lived for nine years where Lyle was employed at Crawfords. It was a good day for him when he was able to move to the family farm in 1973 and start a dairy farm. Sharing his memories are his family Arthur and Eileen Ertman, Curtis and Marion Hostetler, Victor and Charlene Lauber, Verleen and Tim Knudson, Robin and Gloria Grantham; 13 grandchildren Michael (Marla) Roth, Loretta (Aaron) Moysey, Allison (Jon) Warren, Megan Roth, Sawyer (Tori) Roth, Jordan Roth, Justin Knudson, Mitchell (Marcail) Knudson, Carissa Knudson, Amanda Roth, Courtney Roth and Jason Roth; nine great-granddaughters June, Kiya, Rebecca, Selah, Maria, Sarah, Katherine, Sydney and Sadie; two great-grandsons Jack and Patrick; sister Lily Yoder; as well as numerous extended family and friends. Lyle was predeceased by his loving wife Annie; his parents Lee and Mary Ann Roth; and one sister Whilma Lauber. A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 3, 2018 at Salem Mennonite Church south of Tofield (one mile north of intersection TWP 492 Range Road 184). Interment followed at Salem Mennonite Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee.

Terry Fox Run supports cancer research By Murray Green
On the dangers of drill
Over the summer, major media outlets began running stories about the banning of so-called “drill” music in the UK. Drill is a sub-genre of hip-hop that originates in Chicago and is an extension of street gang culture: gangs produce drill songs with videos to taunt and threaten rival gangs and the back-and-forth exchanges of these videos on YouTube often escalate to real violence on the streets. After Alexander Carpenter, a number of brutal murders Music, in London—the victims and University of Alberta the perpetrators are mainly Augustana Campus, young, black teens who are both gang members and members of drill groups—the MET police have banned some drill groups from making music. The notion that music and violence, or other forms of social dysfunction, are linked is certainly not new. The earliest philosophical thought concerned with music—found in the work of Plato and Aristotle—saw music as having the potential to have a significant impact upon the real world, especially with respect to youth. Students learning about music, these philosophers argued, needed to be protected from music’s power: it could shape a young person positively, but it could also distort and pervert his character. To be a good soldier or citizen, you had to learn the right types of songs, comprised of the right types of melodies and not spend too much time on music in case it corrupted you. Music, in other words, could have real and sometimes dangerous ramifications for both individuals and for society as a whole. What does this have to do with modern hip-hop and gang murders in London? Banning a certain type of music because of its perceived effects in the world is tricky, partly because of how the discussion is framed. Drill music is, according to the many journalists covering this story, a particularly “aggressive” form of hip hop. The problem with this, from my perspective as a musicologist, is the laziness of such commentators and their inability to discuss music as a sonic object in meaningful ways. I would argue that drill does not sound aggressive at all: quite the opposite—it is strikingly mild to the ear. It features slow-paced rhythm tracks and deeply resonant bass, with fluid and modestly melodic rap over top; any accompanying music typically comprises thin, subdued, pop-inflected tracks featuring harmonic drones and ringing bell tones. The lyrics may be aggressive, insofar as they include poeticized threats of violence; the videos reinforce this, as the performers—who are also gang members—often appear hooded and masked, making shooting gestures and gang signs with their hands. Perhaps the deeper question—and this resonates with contemporary political debates about free speech and whether speech itself is a form of violence—is this: Can music be violence? Ultimately, the ancient Greeks couldn’t resolve this issue either. For them, music was mimetic: it imitated reality. Aggressive music was that which imitated aggressiveness in the real world. But it is not clear in the writings of Plato and Aristotle precisely what constitutes musical aggression or violence that would be analogous to the real thing. As Michael Gallope observes in Deep Refrains, his recent book on music and philosophy, Socrates called for the banishment of certain types of harmful music based on the social effects he perceived, but in the end admitted he didn’t really know what made some music harmful. In a contemporary context, we can certainly see that street gang violence is pantomimed and documented in drill videos, but we are on shaky ground when we want to ban drill music itself for being violent, or even argue that it causes violence. This is not a defence of gang-inspired hip-hop by any means, but rather a reminder that music is sound organized in time. It is difficult, if not impossible, for philosophers and musically-trained scholars to ascribe concrete social meaning or effects to something so nebulous, much less the police. It is also worth remembering, when one is tempted to ban or blame music for social ills, that words, music and images, even when joined in songs and music videos, are simply not the same things.
The 38th annual Terry Fox Run is a great activity for community members to stay in shape and raise funds for cancer research. Terry Fox Run committee member Dawn Anderson is hoping for a larger turnout this year after having 48 participants last year. The run (walk or ride) will take place at the Stoney Creek Centre beginning at 11 a.m. with a balloon release on Sept. 16. Registration starts at 10 a.m. and is held until minutes before start time. You can participate in either three or 10 kilometer distances. The run allows bicycles, rollerblades and dogs. Dawn has been on the organizing committee in Camrose for the past six years and about 21 years altogether. Terry Fox Run pledge sheets may be obtained online at www.terryfox.org. Receipts will be issued by the Terry Fox Foundation for anyone who makes a donation of $20 or more. There is no registration fee and no charge for participating. In the past, Terry Fox Run in Camrose has attracted between 75 and 100 participants, depending on weather. “We would like more than 100 this year and that is our goal,” added Dawn. “Some high schools don’t take part in the Terry Fox Run, so it is good to get younger people involved, so they will continue it outside of school.” The Terry Fox Run was initiated in 1980 when
Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope for cancer research. Beginning at the shore of the Atlantic in St. John’s on April 12, Terry’s efforts won over Canadians from coast to coast. “We need your help. The people in cancer clinics all over the world need people who believe in miracles. I am not a dreamer and I am not saying that this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer. But, I believe in miracles. I have to,” said Terry Fox, in a letter to Canadians in 1979 prior to his Marathon of Hope. “The night before my amputation, my former basketball coach brought me a magazine with an article on an amputee who ran in the New York Marathon. It was then I decided to meet this new challenge head on and not only overcome my disability, but conquer it in such a way that I could never look back and say it disabled me. “But I soon realized that would only be half my quest, for as I went through the 16 months of the physically and emotionally draining ordeal of chemotherapy, I was rudely awakened by the feelings that surrounded and coursed through the cancer clinic. There were faces with the brave smiles, and the ones who had given up smiling. There were feelings of hopeful denial, and the feelings of despair. “My quest would not be a selfish one. I could not leave knowing these faces and feelings would still exist, even though I would be set free from
RAILING IN FUNDS
mine. Somewhere the hurting must stop…and I was determined to take myself to the limit for this cause. “From the beginning, the going was extremely difficult, and I was facing chronic ailments foreign to runners with two legs in addition to the common physical strains felt by all dedicated athletes. “But these problems are now behind me, as I have either out-persisted or learned to deal with them. I feel strong not only physically, but more important, emotionally. Soon, I will be adding one full mile a week, and coupled with weight training I have been doing, by next April I will be ready to achieve something that for me was once only a distant dream reserved for the world of miracles – to run across Canada to raise money for the fight against cancer. “The running I can do, even if I have to crawl every last mile. We need your help. The people in cancer clinics all over the world need people who believe in miracles.” Although the return of cancer in his lungs forced the end of the running portion of the Marathon of Hope on Sept. 1, Terry’s legacy was just beginning. His vision helped transform cancer research in Canada and establish a new attitude and threshold regarding what kind of investment was necessary in order to support it. For more information, contact Ingrid Urberg at iurberg@ualberta.ca or phone Dawn Anderson at 780-781-5858.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.
