Profiles of leading small businesses serving East Central Alberta Brought to you by…

Evolving with you on your journey Evolve Style Counsel has moved to a new location as part of a transition to better serve their guests while ensuring the professional and personal growth of Van and Hollie, master stylists. Now located in the newly renovated building at 5014-50 Ave., they welcome their guests into bright stylish surroundings that offer a comfortable setting for guests to explore their style possibilities. “This transition will not only better serve our guests but it affords me the opportunity to balance the business of serving my clients while advancing my own career and education,” noted Van. As a top artist for Wella Professionals in North America and an international competitor in hairdressing, Van prides himself in staying current and being able to transpose that onto his clients. Evolve boasts staying on top of the industry in innovations with colour, formulations and molecular structure offering a wholistic experience to their guests. “It is important for Hollie and myself to be able to continue our professional growth and be the best we can be in the industry.” Van’s one-on-one relations with manufacturers maintains ongoing knowledge of the best and most recent products which reflects back to the guests’ experience. “I have been doing hair for over 25 years,” said Van. “I have evolved as much as the business into the person I am today and the career paths I have chosen.” With the salon’s new location comes a feeling of full circle, returning to one of the original sites where Evolve first began its journey of serving the needs of its guests while creating lasting relationships. “This is home for me – this is one of my original locations. We moved over here when the yarn shop closed down, then grew a bit more and moved to Main Street; but this is where it all started happening for me so it is like coming home.” From the minute a guest walks into the shop, they are greeted with warmth and a true sense of caring for what they want for their hair and how they will feel when they leave the shop. An appointment with Evolve is about the entire process, beginning with a consultation and following through with your own needs and wishes as to where you are and how that will look in your own to journey. “We feel honoured to be a part of and witness our client’s own journeys while they get to share in and witness our journey as well,” smiled Van. “It is amazing to see the love and support we get from them, so it is important for us to ensure they have the best experience and can come out of here feeling a sense of renewal and pride.”

Enjoy award winning Norsemen craft beer The Norsemen Brewing Co. has completed the full circle with a recent award at the national craft beer festival. It all started when owner Sean Willms had a great vision to add a brewery to his hotel. He visited dozens of breweries and brew pubs to see how they operated. Then he wanted to learn from the best craftsmen in the world in Germany, so his company could one day sit at the awards table. His new brewery would be so popular that it needed to expand about every other year. He added brewmaster Ryan Stang to the staff to keep up with the demand. “We increased our production by 35 per cent last year and another 20 per cent this year at the Norsemen Brewing Co.,” added Ryan. “We continue to grow every year. We have to store beer in kegs now. “We now have six lines of beer. Four are mainstays—Longship Blonde Ale, Eric the Red, Epic Oatmeal Stout and Thor’s Hammer IPA. The other two lines are rotating special brews. Right now we have Knut the Great, a nut brown ale and our German-style Octoberfest lager.” The variety has been a hit not only at the Norsemen Inn, but wherever it is sold. “People are not expecting the big flavour from a craft beer, but we have gone with a 10.8 per cent alcohol beer and it is enjoyed a little slower, almost similar to wine drinking. After people sample the beer they realize they are approachable and very good.” The Norsemen Brewing Co. doesn’t have to encourage people to try something different. In fact, many customers eagerly await for a new batch to try out. “In the past we had beer that took about eight weeks to sell. Those are now selling out in about three weeks,” shared Ryan. The Wolf in Monk’s Clothing beer is a Belgian dark strong beer that is 10.8 per cent recently won a national award. “We submitted the beer under the dark beer category and the judging is done in Toronto. Professional beer judges taste them all and give them points. The Canadian Beer Awards were held

in Halifax and we earned a bronze. That was a big win for us out here in Alberta. “It is a big networking event, so we gather information on how other breweries make beer and we learn from them as well. We swap secrets and learn what new things are coming up,” said Ryan. An India Pale Ale in the east may not be the same as one in the west. “You could put them side by side and they could be very different.” A big part of the reason the brewery is expanding on a regular basis is because the Norsemen Brewing Co. has seen his distribution grow through several outlets outside of the hotel. They have delivered kegs to tourism events, to the Bailey Theatre and the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre for fundraising events. Both the Camrose Kodiaks and Augustana Vikings serve it at hockey games. You can even take home some of this delicious beer from the Norsemen Inn where they will fill up for you a 1.89 litre growler (64 ounces). When it’s finished, just bring it back and get a full fresh one. It’s one of the ways the craft brewing industry is making fresh beer available to enjoy at home.

Find all your

licence needs

Camrose Registry is here to help you, in registering a vehicle, obtaining a driver’s licence, a marriage or raffle licence, or conducting lien and land title searches. “We have a great, friendly team here that strives to provide the best possible service,” said manager Karen Dammann. “We’re willing to go that extra mile to help with fast friendly service and get customers back on their way.”

Vehicle registration

If you buy a car that was previously registered in Alberta, you must register it under the name/names that is on the bill of sale. You will be asked for three documents: the original bill of sale with signatures of the buyer and seller or lease documents, your proof of insurance, and your identification. If you are registering a brand new vehicle that has never been registered before, you will need those three documents plus the New Vehicle Information Statement (NVIS), provided by the auto dealership. “The provincial government is no longer sending out reminder notices for your vehicle and driver’s licence renewals. But we can help you with that,” says Karen. “The Camrose Registry website (www.camroseregistry.com) offers an E-Reminder link. With this link, you can sign up for reminder notices by email or text for your vehicle registration and your driver’s licence. This website is also a good resource for downloading various registration forms.”

Driver’s testing

To write your Class 7 learner’s licence you must be at least 14 years old and, if under the age of 18, must be accompanied by a parent and provide a birth certificate or a valid passport. If you are 16 years of age or older, and have held a valid Class 7 licence for one year, you can take a road test.

With a Basic Road Test you are in the GDL (Graduated Driver’s Licence) Program. And, once you have been in that program for two years you can take an advanced road test. Openings are available for road tests, usually with two week’s notice. Road tests and knowledge tests are also available for all other classes of licences.” The Learner’s Handbook is no longer available, but you can find them on the Alberta Transportation website: (www.transportation.alberta.ca/531.htm) Flashcards are also available as a study tool through the Camrose Registry office.

Liens

Camrose Registry is able to search the Alberta and acrossCanada personal property database for liens and registered encumbrances on a variety of items, including vehicles. “When you are buying a vehicle you should check to see if there are liens against it,” said Karen. “You don’t want to find that you have become liable for an unpaid debt on the car that you are buying. You can also purchase lien searches on our website.”

RAFFLES

“We can help with licences that are required if you are a sports group or charity wanting to conduct a 50/50 draw or raffle where the prize is valued at less than $10,000.”

VITAL STATISTICS

“Camrose Registry can order your marriage, birth and death certificate if the event occurred in Alberta. We can also issue marriage licences if the marriage will take place in Alberta.”

in one convenient location

Land searches

“We also do land title searches. They help you to determine if there are mortgages or caveats on it,” said Karen. “We can’t make changes, but we can do the searches for you.”

ALBERTA HEALTH CARE

You can submit your application for Alberta Health Care at our office if you’re new to the province, if you’ve had a name change or an address change.

ORGAN DONOR REGISTRY

When you renew your driver’s licence you now will be asked if you would like to donate your organs for transplants, scientific research or medical education. With your consent, the word ‘Donor’ and a heart symbol will appear on your licence. Your request will also be entered into the Alberta Organ and Tissue Donor Registry.

Corporate registries

Camrose Registry can help you incorporate your business, as well as file annual corporate registry returns. A reminder form is sent out annually by Corporate Registries prior to the anniversary of the company’s incorporation. Not all changes have to go through lawyers. “We can do a lot for businesses that keep their own books,” added Karen.” If you’re looking to incorporate or are simply renewing your licence, the knowledgeable, friendly staff at Camrose Registry can assist you every step of the way.

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm; Saturdays 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

omen in the 40-plus age range are the fastest-growing group of those going to Alpine Fitness. Their children are in school (or have left home), they have more time for themselves and they are highly motivated. A big reason why they choose Alpine is because there’s a women-only area which makes their workouts more comfortable. There’s a sense of privacy and friendly sisterhood. Another reason for its popularity is a special circuit training program set up using various machines targeting different muscle groups. It offers a super-efficient full-body workout as you move from station to station in about 40 minutes. The results are noticeable.

“It really works to minimize the natural loss of muscle and bone mass which comes with age, which is important for women in their 40s, 50s and beyond,” says Matt MacKenzie, the fitness facility manager. Matt holds a degree in kinesiology and is a terrific resource for members of the gym who have questions about exercising for maximum benefit. “We really have a wide mix of members. There are quite a few young guys in the 18 to 29 age category who are bulking up on bench presses and working out in the squat/power racks,” says Matt. “We also see a lot of women heading upstairs to the women-only area to work on their fitness, either with resistance training or cardio workouts on the treadmills, bikes

In addition, yoga classes on Tuesdays, one for beginners at 5:30 p.m. and another more advanced class at 6:30 p.m., are part of an Alpine membership. In fact, all the classes at Alpine are included. A full-year membership in advance is $540, or you can opt for $50 per month on a yearly contract. There’s also a month-to-month plan for $65 per month. The team at Alpine Fitness and Sport Massage do their best to make it as easy and attractive as possible for you to get into your best shape. The facility is open 24 hours for its members. There’s a wide range of free weights, barbells, dumbbells, isolation machines, stairclimbers, treadmills, bikes and ellipticals. Matt is there to answer your questions and give you a tour. Alpine owner Don McArthur, a registered massage therapist and avid weight lifter, is also very knowledgeable about maximizing your potential. Massage and stretching are a crucial part of fitness. Don and his team of five therapists can provide therapeutic massage for sports enthusiasts or relaxation massages for those who simply want to unwind. As an Alpine member, you can choose to buy a package which gives you a one-hour massage per month at 10 percent off as well as your gym membership at 10 percent savings. Central Agencies has provided

55 years of outstanding service

It was 55 years ago this October that Betty and Norm Mayer decided to start a business they named Central Agencies. They built a business that has stood the test of time based on giving customers great service. The couple wanted to be there for the citizens of Camrose, regardless of the trials and tribulations they have encountered along the way. “That is what sets us apart from any other insurance provider. Things have changed in 55 years, but you can still count on our service. Customer service is the most important part of our business. It was true when my dad pulled up with his 1963 Ford Galaxie back when he started the business, through to today with our trusted and knowledgable staff,” said James Mayer. His shiny new 1963 Ford Galaxie was worth about $2,300 when Norm started his business. Today’s vehicles have gone up in value and technology. The internet may make things more instant, but the care and time spent to look after the customers hasn’t changed. “As with any successful business, the strength of Central Agencies is in its people and service. We still answer our phones with a familiar voice to assist customers in a timely manner to help them with all of their needs.” Norm, Betty and James Mayer, along with each and every member of Central Agencies, are thoroughly committed to providing the best possible service while helping to meet all your insurance requirements. It’s about people helping people. Some of the faces have changed, but the service is still a top priority. “In today’s fast-paced world of 800 numbers, we believe its the people who make the

difference. The needs of our customers are not met simply with the writing of a policy,” explained James. “It is our goal to offer them strength, stability and, most of all, the kind of service that extends far beyond the first sale.” Central Agencies’ insurance professionals are right here in Camrose for their customers. In the event of a claim, they work with you to ensure everything is resolved to your greatest satisfaction. Every staff member is trained to provide you the best coverage, so you can relax knowing they have your back. Central Agencies continues to work hard at representing their clients when they need support, even after 55 years. “We can offer our customers the best possible coverage at the most competitive prices,” said James. “It doesn’t matter if you need home or auto insurance, tenants’ insurance, farm and commercial insurance, we have it all.” REAL ESTATE As well as being a dependable name when it comes to insurance, Central Agencies is highly regarded as a distinguished leader when it comes to listing and selling homes, acreages, farms and commercial real estate. “We don’t really sell homes; we sell solutions to individuals, or the needs of a family,” said James. “Our agents’ primary roles are to accurately determine exactly what will work in terms of property size, location, condition and price point. It is only when we determine what is best for the client that we can match a buyer and seller accurately.”

Celebrating 25 years of serving our community Two words perfectly describe the way Harley’s likes to do business: Community, Service

These words are simple but they represent the many ways Harley’s sees itself as part of the fabric of Camrose and all of east central Alberta.

Launched as a family business 25 years ago on November 22, this liquor store was the first privately-owned store of its kind in Camrose. It quickly became the leader, thanks to its customer loyalty program, its dedication to service, its commitment to being a good corporate citizen and its terrific location at the corner of 48 Avenue and 66 Street. During that time, Harley’s has given back to the community generously. When you purchase from Harley’s you know that a portion of the sale will be given back to a hometown non-profit organization, a way of reinvesting into your community. When you purchase from Harley’s you know the profits will stay here, they won’t be sent to a corporate head office in Toronto, they won’t go off-shore, they will stay right here helping to make our community stronger and better. Harley’s is owned and managed by local people who live here, who make decisions not only for the sake of their business, but for the sake of the community.

Service comes with a friendly smile and a sincere “can I help you find something?” They ask if you need help carrying out your purchase. They can order in a special request for you. However, their service runs deeper because the folks at Harley’s know they’re really part of this community, they’re your friends and your neighbours. You will see them taking in a show, making donations to fundraisers, such as STARS, 4-H, the Hospice Society and smaller rural community centres. They like to lend a helping hand when they can.

A fresh approach to real estate W

hy is young talent choosing the RE/MAX office in Camrose to build their careers in real estate? The compelling reasons to join RE/MAX are plentiful. The company is dominant on social media, its online presence is unparalleled, it offers industry-leading training programs and its support systems are the envy of others in the profession. However, the atmosphere in the office is what really sets it apart. A feeling of cooperation and friendliness, a sense of family, is instilled in the culture. When the realtors are in different locations and have a digital meeting on their phones, they use the hashtag “#RemaxFamily”. This “family” recently saw the arrival of realtors Tiffany Dowker and Lucas Banack, both now rising stars in the business. “They like the youthful energy and the progressive way we promote real estate in this market,” says Trevor Vinet, who helped launch the brokerage five years ago. The RE/MAX family has continued to gain market share and has proven to be an industry leader when it comes to marketing, client service, and professionalism. “We pride ourselves on highly personalized service and the strength of our team approach when you work with a RE/MAX agent,” SBW 2018 – Page 16

says Trevor. “We enjoy taking clients on personal tours of properties. We create authentic one-to-one connections and learn what our clients really want.” The spirit of collaboration pervades the office. They help each other, they talk about concerns and challenges, they work things through, relying on each other’s strengths to bring a different perspective. It’s a refreshing approach to what may have been a stodgy, dog-eat-dog business in the past. Their approach is clearly working. Four of the top ten realtors in Camrose (2018) are in this RE/MAX office. Tiffany and Lucas were totally impressed by what they experienced and feel fortunate to have joined the family. Drew Conlon, born and raised in Camrose, is proud to be a four-year veteran of the industry, all of which was spent working with the RE/MAX team. It’s not only in Camrose this family is changing the way real estate is marketed. Several in the office have strong ties to their rural “cousins”. Tracy Brandingen was raised in the Sedgewick area, Katie Hauser lives near Rosalind, Michelle Majeski and husband Jim farm northeast of Camrose and the Banack name is well known in the Round Hill district.

This sense of community extends to the good work they do donating personal time to worthwhile causes close to their hearts. Special Olympics, Kinsmen, the Lougheed Performing Arts Centre, The Open Door, minor sports, Battle River Community Foundation, and more are supported by this tight knit RE/MAX family. A portion of every transaction is donated to the Children’s Miracle Network and they organize an annual charity golf tournament which has seen over $60,000 given through this RE/MAX Miracle Office. If you’re ready to experience a fresh, successful way to buy and sell property, call one of the agents at the RE/MAX office in Camrose. They will treat you like family!

Saving you $$$ Year After Year Time is money, and when a piece of equipment breaks down during peak season, it can be very costly. John Rawson, owner of John’s Shopmobile started his own mobile mechanic business over 30 years ago. Back then, there was no shop, and he provided a one man mobile service to farmers, driving around from farm to farm, making repairs on a wide variety of farm equipment. Now with his convenient location at Legacy Junction, most customers bring their equipment and many of their vehicles to his shop. However, during the busy spring and harvest seasons, John and mechanic Scott Young are still happy to make farm calls. “If we can get one more year out of that old fuel truck or grain truck, that’s what we’re about”, notes John. “Another large part of our business is motorhomes. Many snowbirds stop by and see us before they make the long trek south every winter; to make sure their motorhome is in optimum condition for the trip.”

John’s shop not only does repairs on all trucks, trailers, agricultural equipment and motorhomes; it is also a licensed commercial inspection facility through CVSI. Commercial truck and vehicle inspections are done (including out of province) in compliance with program standards and provincial regulations.

John Rawson, left, and Scott Young are willing to tackle small or big jobs in their shop or on your farm.

Numerous farmers and snowbirds appreciate that John will take the time to do maintenance and repair work on older vehicles to give them an extended life, and John knows it’s critical to keep farmers and truckers on the move. ne of Heather Ryan’s favorite moments is when a client from long past calls her out of the blue and asks her to represent them again because of their positive previous experience. “It’s so rewarding when clients remember the service you provided and trust you enough to call you to represent them again,” says Heather. Heather’s continued success in

Camrose shouldn’t be a surprise, even though the current real estate market is soft. For 18 years running she has tallied very impressive numbers as she negotiated and closed hundreds of deals during that time. Her list of awards and achievements are pretty remarkable. As a Royal LePage agent she has succeeded in winning the President’s Gold Award, Diamond Award, Director’s Platinum Award as well as the Award of Excellence. As a Re/MAX agent she reached the President’s Club, Executive Club, 100% Club, Platinum Club and was honoured with Hall of Fame status for her long standing success. How does she do it? How does she reach these lofty achievements year after year? There’s not one simple answer. She credits her clients first and foremost for their continued support and repeat business as well as the many referrals of family and friends. She is immersed in every aspect of the process. She considers a client, to be a client and friend for life. “I love hearing from people I have sold homes to! They are excited about changes they have made to their new home and they are proud to have me come and check it out!” Another key to her success is her presence on social media. She is very active on Facebook,

LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram with many followers watching constant updates on the real estate market. She stays connected and involved, keeps up to date on market trends, stays relevant and is well informed. She builds trust with her personal connections, she strives to be kind and she gives of herself through the Camrose Women’s Shelter, on whose board she has been active for over a decade. The driving motivation, the overarching theme, is her passion for the work. She strives to make the task of buying and selling fun for her clients. However, she is thoroughly conscientious. She understands the importance of the professional job she performs. Heather knows that buying a home or property is the biggest investment most people will make in their lifetime. She gets it and doesn’t take for granted the huge amount of trust they have instilled in her to help them through the process seamlessly. One of her major strengths is in negotiating. Heather’s clients find her to be a powerful, tenacious, tough advocate who has only their best interests at heart. They appreciate having her in their corner. If you want Heather in your corner, if you want someone resourceful, knowledgeable, experienced and accomplished, call her today to represent your best interests. She will have your back.

City of Camrose strategically plans The new Ross Agri Supply building located in the east end business centre is an example of the progress Camrose is experiencing.

Committed to providing all residents quality of life and a growing local economy, the City of Camrose prepares for the future with the 2018-2022 Strategic Plan. Approved by council, the strategic plan focuses on four areas: encouraging regional cooperation, ensuring long-term water sustainability, improving asset and project management and strengthening the regional economy. With a vision to be a community where all can thrive and a mission to provide fiscally responsible municipal services that contribute to a high quality of life for citizens and the success of businesses, the City will build on the values of health and safety, responsible stewardship, excellent customer service, forward-thinking leadership and outstanding teamwork. By encouraging cooperation with regional neighbours, Camrose will ensure a stronger and more cohesive future for citizens through continued growth and partnerships that benefit all. The City will be a proactive leader in bringing organizations together to work on initiatives to strengthen the regional economy, which entails exploring how Camrose can become better equipped to compete in attracting new industries, businesses and jobs. The success of any municipality lies within its ability to grow its economy. A primary focus of the Camrose strategic plan is to continue to develop a strong and diverse economy that provides opportunities for young people, families and businesses so the community thrives. While supporting the existing business community and dynamic downtown, Camrose will seek to build its economic base and attract well-paying jobs, professionals, entrepreneurs and new industries. The process includes working with Camrose’s existing businesses to find ways to help them grow and ensure they are prepared for changes in the economy. This includes exploring Camrose’s advantages to motivate business investment in the city as well as assisting existing

businesses to grow into the future marketplace. The City continues to work on the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan to ensure a thriving downtown and small business growth. The City will also explore resources to allow the City to help safeguard the sustainability of existing businesses. The City is planning to work with local businesses to obtain a better understanding of the status of Camrose’s labour force and assess how prepared businesses are for the new economy. “One of the objectives of this research will be to determine the gap between the skills we have now and what we are going to need, and how prepared the businesses are to get their workers properly reskilled for the future,” explained Victor Goodman, Director of Community Development and Innovation. Sustainable water supplies are vital for the survival of any municipality. Through cooperation with regional and provincial partners, the City will seek alternate long-term sources for water sustainability while encouraging residents and businesses to be water wise. The City and Council will continue to work to improve asset and project management for planning and implementing current and future projects, including capital projects such as the waste water treatment plant upgrade, public works building and road rehabilitation ten-year project. They also strive to identify and plan for long-term facility and land needs. For more information on the City of Camrose 20182022 Strategic Plan, visit the website at www.camrose.ca.
