Twenty years ago, City Center Camrose businesses of all types approached the Camrose Booster about implementing a loyalty program that could help convince consumers that it was worth their time and money to rely on businesses right here at home. Reliable vehicles and an easy commute meant a lot of people had been driving to Edmonton for Christmas shopping and other transactions. The challenge of being so close to major malls and bigger businesses has evolved and expanded to now include an even bigger challenge – widespread and widely accepted online shopping from points around the globe. The 300-member business association has changed over the years, too. Now known as Downtown Camrose, small business owners range from retail to professional, to service and more, and continue to reward those who do business locally. The ever-popular Stamp Around program, offering a stamp for every $10 spent and a completed entry form when 10 stamps are earned, offers a chance at a weekly prize of $100 or the grand prize shopping spree worth $1,500. The Stamp Around promotion has seen a significant change of its own as the 20th anniversary promotion milestone is reached this year. You can now accumulate your purchase stamps on your smart phone app – Camrose NOW!

It’s all in your mind—really
Maybe you already know about David McRaney. He’s been around for a while but I’ve only just heard of him. He’s written two bestsellers, You Are Not So Smart (2011) and You Are Now Less Dumb (2013). McRaney writes about why “self-delusion is as much a part of the human condition as fingers and toes.” This is not new information. Back in the 1960s in a social psychology course, I encountered the concept of “cognitive dissonance.” I still haven’t recovered. The basic concept is this: if we encounter information that is different from what we believe, that difference causes mental (cognitive) discomfort (dissonance). We are hard-wired to want to reduce discomfort. In order to reduce discomfort, we are not likely to change our beliefs to match the facts. Instead, we reject the facts. ***
What’s new since the 1960s is that we now have additional proof that cognitive dissonance is real. You can see proof in MRI scans. Brain scans show that portions of the brain responsible for rational thought get less blood when shown statements that oppose one’s political stance, until another statement is presented that confirms one’s beliefs. As McRaney said, “Your brain literally begins to shut down when you feel your ideology is threatened.” When I first heard about cognitive dissonance, it scared me. I looked around and saw lots of evidence that it was true. It was frighteningly easy to see examples in government, in business, in my community… It took me longer to recognize areas of my life in which I clung to false beliefs rather than face reality. Too much cognitive dissonance! It scared me because it meant that much of what happens in our personal lives and in the world is the result of decisions based on false information. And all of us are more likely to cling to false information rather than change our beliefs. McRaney calls it The Backfire Effect. He said, “Studies show that when a person sees corrections to stories that spread misinformation, if the person already believes the original story, the correction deepens that person’s convictions instead of correcting them.” In other words, you can never win an argument intended to change someone’s mind. ***
Some other observations about how our brains work. A noisy minority can convince us that the majority opinion is actually the minority (lots of evidence of that). You already know that in the presence of a stranger wearing a uniform (say, a police uniform), you’ll change your behaviour. New research shows that wearing clothes with symbolic significance affects your behavior. People wearing a white coat who were told it was the kind a doctor wears did better in tests of mental agility than did people who wore the same coat, but were told it was a painter’s smock. Be careful what you wear then. Research suggests that willpower is a depletable resource. The more you exert self-control, the less self-control you have until you either rest for a while or give in. People who must sit in front of chocolate chip cookies without eating them will later give up sooner on frustrating puzzles than people who are allowed to eat as many as they want. McRaney said, “It’s called ego depletion, and it’s something you’ll need to guard against especially if you’re in charge of people’s lives or money.”
THE FINE PRINT: Letters are welcomed, but please limit them to 400 words or less and sign with first name, initial, surname, address and phone number; only the name of the writer and city or town will be printed. Letters to third parties are not accepted. The Camrose Booster may edit for clarity, legality, personal abuse, good taste, public interest and availability of space. The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Malone response
I welcomed Arnold Malone’s discussion of the Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system until I realized he doesn’t know what he is talking about. He stated that, “Australia and New Zealand hate their new system.” Well, Australia doesn’t have PR Mr. Malone, although it does have ranked voting, which your Conservative Party uses for selecting its leader? New Zealand is a better example. It used the same first-past-the-post system that we use and did switch to PR in 1993 after being frustrated with their elections in the 1980s. Malone is just plain wrong when he states that NZ hates PR. Former NZ Prime Minister Helen Clark, who campaigned against the change to PR at the time, later said that PR has resulted in a “more collaborative, more consultative, more transparent political system.” In 2011, New Zealanders voted strongly in a referendum to keep PR. New Zealanders like their PR Malone, and there are no Nazis in the New Zealand parliament. Malone says that Canada ranks in the top few countries in the UN’s human development index. He’s about 25 years out of date. We’ve been stuck at 12th for some time; all but one of the countries ahead of us have PR. When Germany and Italy came out of fascism after the Second World War, they chose PR. When Japan and Korea became democratic after the war, they chose PR. When the modern country of Israel formed in 1948, it chose PR. When Portugal, Spain and Greece threw out military dictatorship in the 1970s, they chose PR. When the countries of
Eastern Europe broke free of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, they all chose PR. Over 90 countries in the world now use some form of proportional representation. That should tell you something Malone. The university experts overwhelmingly agree that PR is better than our system. UBC political scientist Maxwell Cameron said that in PR, “party leaders would have to learn to work together, as competition among parties would be tempered by the recognition of the need for cooperation between elections.” Without a doubt, cooperation is better than our politicians’ constant bickering. So why are the Liberals and Malone’s Conservatives so against PR? The German business organization Transparency International ranks countries in terms of how corrupt their governments are. They find that the least corrupt governments are those that have PR. Transparency’s least corrupt government in the world? New Zealand. Rob Hill, Camrose Sustainable earth
I suggest we are running out of time to build a just and sustainable earth. We recently were told that the next 12 years are critical. It is time we faced reality. Current world economic conditions are the result of failed political policies worldwide. Expecting the old guard or the new populists to fix things is fantasy or perhaps insanity. We live in an age where “truth” is under attack, especially when it comes to political discourse. I would suggest that to better discern what is truth, we remember a few basic ideas: There are no simple
answers to complex questions; we must solve our problems with the tools presently available; the response must be global in nature but we can only act locally; our current world problems, such as climate change and the extreme gap between rich and poor happened, in large part, over the last 50 years or more and cannot be solved overnight; action to solve these problems that threaten our very existence will take cooperative action; those responsible for this situation, and/or their clones, seek to retain power or in the alternative, populist leaders world-wide pretend to have magic solutions to instantly fix the problem or deny that the problems exist; history has shown, over and over, that where populists take power, they do not or cannot keep their promises; many studies show that many of those who support populists, act against their own best interests; democracy is a fragile institution, and can be lost easier than it can be regained; current election campaign trends often make us believe we must choose between “the lesser of two evils” or that we have no choice to vote for something we believe in; the populist danger is very evident in the world today and Canada is not immune; not voting is abstaining from your responsibility to keep alive the idea of democracy, even if it is flawed. We are facing elections in Canada and the province soon. Get involved. Our interests have much more in common than many believe. Consider those interests carefully and think before you vote. Harry Gaede, Camrose
***
This paragraph stopped me: “We now know that there is no way you can ever know an ‘objective’ reality, and we know that you can never know how much of subjective reality is a fabrication, because you never experience anything other than the output of your mind. Everything that’s ever happened to you has happened inside your skull.” I read that and thought, “Good grief! That means my entire life is a figment of my imagination.” But then I thought…If everything I believe is a figment of my imagination, I might as well imagine things that make me happy. We’ll see how that works out. ***
I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com.

Members of the Camrose EMS and other volunteers are giving of their time, to help out Camrose Neighbor Aid Center and encourage residents to bring down food, non-food (see lists below), monetary or gift card donations to stock up the shelves and lend a hand to those in need. “This event would not be possible without gracious contributions and of course, the generosity from the citizens of Camrose,” said Primary Care paramedic Brandon Erickson. “The staff and volunteers from Camrose EMS would also like to give a special thanks to the local businesses who donated special equipment, food and beverages to help us endure the cold.”
Neighbor Aid, serving the City of Camrose and Camrose County, assisted the following number of families through the hamper program in 2018: January 249, February 217, March 216, April 215, May 218, June 213, July 193 August 205, September 228, October 213 and November 228. The food bank welcomes non-perishable items including: canned fish or meat (tuna, flaked chicken, ham), peanut butter, canned soups (vegetable/mushroom/chunky), canned fruit or vegetables, granola bars, cookies,
crackers, juice boxes, fruit cups, pudding cups. Non-food items needed include: baby diapers (sizes

3,4,5), soap, shampoo and deodorant. Cash donations will be used to help purchase food and other items needed, such as fresh fruit and vegetables. In describing how important donations are to the food bank, but more importantly the people it serves, Camrose Neighbor Aid Center program director Jo-Anne Tweed commented. “Imagine what it is like to have to choose between
paying a bill or buying food for your family. It’s hard to imagine the stress it may cause. The burning feeling in your gut, because there isn’t enough to go around. “It is also difficult to imagine trying to pack school lunches for your children when there is next to nothing in your kitchen cupboards and nothing in your fridge. No fruit cups, no yogurt packs, no carrots, celery, apples, oranges or bananas. No tuna or sliced meats.
“Can you imagine what it is like to have to skip meals, so your kids can eat? Not eating for long periods of time, or eating excessive amounts of food when it is available. I can and together we can make a difference.” On Dec. 8, head towards the flashing lights, bring a donation to the Stuff an Ambulance event and reach out a helping hand to others in our communities who may be going through difficult times. There is a very good chance Santa will be in the area at some point as well, greeting people and bringing smiles to children. Safeway will also have prepackaged donation bags available in various denominations to purchase and donate. “It is with the generosity of others that we can restock our “cupboards” and help those in need,” said Tweed. “Neighbor Aid thanks everyone for their continual support.”
Merry Christmas Fund By Murray Green
The holiday season is fast approaching. So too is the time to get ready to assemble food and toy hampers for the Merry Christmas Fund. The Camrose Merry Christmas Fund was started 53 years ago when a need was filled by supplying food hampers to less fortunate families within the community. Last year, the Camrose Merry Christmas Fund supplied 252 hampers to families. “I’m expecting that number to be closer to 260 this year,” said Merry Christmas Fund public relations chair Dale Debnam. “Last year, we raised about $30,000, but we had a shortfall of $667. We need to raise $32,000, in order to purchase food for the hampers.” Donations can be made at the Royal Bank and at the Camrose Fire Department. The Camrose Merry Christmas Fund is a registered charity, so people will be mailed a tax receipt during the first two weeks in January. The food hampers are intended to provide a good Christmas meal and food for an entire day. “If someone wants to have a hamper delivered to them or a family, they have to register at the Camrose and District Neighbor Aid Center,” said Dale. The number at the ’m expecting centre is 780-679-3220. Volunteers also help that number deliver toys packaged by to be closer to t he Ca m rose 260 this year. Kinettes. “The Kinettes sort and package the toys, the Lions Club picks them up and drops them off to us and we send them out with the food hampers,” shared Dale. “We meet at the current Fire Hall starting at 9 a.m. to start delivering hampers,” said Dale. The hampers are packed at the Fire Hall on Thursday, Dec. 20 and are delivered to homes in the morning on Saturday, Dec. 22. If people know they are receiving a hamper, they are asked to be home to receive the hamper to avoid sending it back. For more information about the Merry Christmas Fund, contact Larry Schultz at 780-672-1493. If you need a donation picked up, contact Dale Debnam at 780-878-4465. “It is a good outing for families who want to expose their children to volunteering during the Christmas season.

An image often associated with the holiday season is the family tree, decorated, lit and standing proud amidst the excitement. The Camrose Swans and Roses Lions Club has been serving the community with their annual Christmas tree lot for years. They invite residents to, once again, come down to the lot located in the north end parking lot of the Norsemen Inn (look for the 14-foot Santa) and enjoy the ambience of a good old fashioned tree lot, to pick out that amazing real tree. The lot hours are from 1 until 7 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturdays and 1 until 5 p.m. on Sundays. “All the proceeds from the sale of trees go to support local charities through the Swans and Roses Lions Club,” said Lion, Gary Cunningham. “When you buy trees from us, the money stays in town.” A variety of sizes will be available and trees will be sold up until the last week before Christmas or until quantities last. Volunteers will be on hand to help you unwrap your tree to ensure it is the perfect fit for your home, cut the bottom at your request and they will even deliver (in city). The Lions encourage residents to come down and take a stroll through the decorated tree lot and enjoy the smell of the natural trees and the fun of picking out the one that is just right for you.

Airport hangar lease fees increased for 2019 By Lori Larsen
On Nov. 28, during a special council meeting, City of Camrose councillors voted in favour of increasing the 2019 lease rate for all hangar lot leases at the Camrose Municipal Airport by 2.5 per cent over 2018 lease rates, or $1.701 per square metre plus GST. Discussion on the rate increase began during the regular council meeting held on Nov. 19, where the proposed rate increase was five per cent at a rate of $1.742 per square metre. City of Camrose director of engineering Jeremy Enarson noted that the proposed five per cent increase would have allowed it to continue reducing the operational subsidy of the airport by the City at large. He also indicated in his report that administration had discussed the proposed increase of five per cent with the Airport Commission on Nov. 15 and that the Airport Commission members did not support the recommended five per cent increase, suggesting the increase should fall more in line with changes to the consumer price index (CPI), which at the time of the report was three per cent. “They (Airport Commission) noted that the airport serves a much larger purpose than just serving any local tenants and any increase greater than CPI was putting a burden on the tenants as opposed to the community at large,” said Enarson. In his report to council, Enarson explained, based on 2017 recorded traffic data, approximately 38 per cent of traffic movements at the Camrose Airport involved aircraft that took off from and returned to Camrose on the same day. “While these numbers may include visiting aircraft, administration believes that most of the aircraft included in the 38 per cent are local to Camrose.” Councillor Wayne Throndson inquired as to what the standard size lot is at the airport and how it translates into a typical lot annual dollar rate. Enarson replied, “Some of our smaller lots at the airport would be paying anywhere from about $790 per year and that is for the rental of the land and the improvements on it. The
larger lots would pay up to $3,800 per year.” Throndson replied, “What I struggle with when I look at the operational deficit, is that seems low to me.” Councillor Kevin Hycha commented on the proposed lease rate increase and the effects they have on the tenants. “After 10 years of year after year of five per cent increases, they are digging in their heels and saying stop, it is not all on us. This airport serves a greater good. “Some (tenants) would argue that the service levels have not been kept up but have actually declined, like the snow removal. This airport serves the greater good such as Cargill, Meridian and the Air Ambulance. I strongly feel you shouldn’t put the burden of the costs on the hangar owners for something that the whole city benefits from. As a city, we subsidize things that make Camrose what it is, like the golf course, curling rink, performing arts centre and we love to have those. To me, the airport is what makes Camrose what it is, and to penalize a few of the hangar owners is not right.” Hycha continued, “I think some of the costs should go back to the city and maintain what we have. It is for the greater good.” Throndson responded, “The airport is a service to the city. What I am struggling with is not to gouge hangar owners, but make sure we are charging a fair rate.” Throndson queried Enarson on how the property taxes at the airport (hangars) are assessed. “Are they assessed simply on the lot value, or are they assessed based upon the value of the lot and value of improvements on the lot?” Enarson explained, “We do tax on land and improvements and a few tenants have questioned why are they being taxed on the land in addition to the improvements.” Councillor Cathie Johnson questioned why the City is subsidizing things such as the airport. “I know the theory behind why we keep subsidizing higher income hobbies such as the golf course, airport and curling rink, is because it brings the dollar spend-
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster City of Camrose council approved an increase to all hangar lot leases at the Camrose Municipal Airport of 2.5 per cent over 2018.
ers to Camrose, but do we have proof of that (actual dollar figures) or is it just a theory? Why are we throwing away all of this money if we are not actually getting the money back from the higher income users by coming and spending money here?” In response to councillor Johnson’s inquiry, councillor Hycha commented, “Companies like Meridian have about 200 plus employees in this town. Those employees pay taxes, buy fuel, go to the movies. Those companies (like Cargill and Meridian) that are using the airport bring back to Camrose in ways that you cannot measure.” City of Camrose community development and innovation director Victor Goodman added, “The airport is an economical development asset and it is impossible to identify a
clear way to measure the impact of that asset. There are numerous reasons why having an airport is a valuable thing, granted they tend to cost more than they bring in, unless you have business opportunities for revenue around the airport.” Councillor PJ Stasko commented, “In the grand scheme of things, we are looking at five per cent which represents $1,770 per year to the City. So the average hangar user (lease rate) goes up $40 to $50 and the large hanger (lease rate) goes up $190.” Councillor Max Lindstrand commented on the overall subsidy to the airport by the City. “We (City) are looking at an overall subsidy of $156,378 (annually), so it is not like we are not doing our fair share in the terms of taxpayers helping to pay
for the cost of the airport. How much do the hangar owners contribute to the overall cost of the airport, is it $34,000?” Enarson replied that the tenants at the airport would contribute to the overall budget in a number of ways. “There are two main revenue sources at the airport. One is the lease fees and the other is the sale of fuel. The tenants would be directly contributing in the terms of lease fees and the tenants who are more active would be assisting in the purchase of fuel.” Enarson noted that the taxes that are paid for the land and improvements on hangar properties do not show up in the airport ledgers, but go into main City tax ledgers. Changes to the airport lease rates will come into effect on Jan. 1, 2019.

Amero ready for your Christmas By Murray Green
The Amero Little Christmas, with Don Amero, is a new take on a classic Christmas variety show. It falls somewhere between a Michael Bublé Christmas Special and Tom Jackson’s Huron Carole, giving the audience a modern take on an annual Christmas show. He provides plenty of laughs, heartfelt music and inspiring stories. Don is making his mark on the Canadian Country music scene. Camrose music fans may remember Don opening for the Kentucky Headhunters last year. Now he is back at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. in the cabaret series. “The event was great. The music was good, the people were great and I loved the facility. It was a good night and I’m looking forward to returning to Camrose,” he said. “It’s a big leap from opening to having my own show, but we won’t disappoint anyone,” said Don. Amero Little Christmas is an extension of what Don does all year round. “It’s similar except more Christmassy. People are more receptive to the spirit of the season and hopefully we use this platform to get people into the spirit of Christmas.” He’ll be touring his soulful country voice along with a few band mates to ring in the holiday season. From humble beginnings in 2009, Don decided to plan a Christmas-themed
Today is your Day!
Amero Little Christmas
concert based purely on his love for holiday music and the community vibe that the season brings. “We all know there’s something magical about Christmas and my hope is to capture some of that and put it into a show. We want to kick off the holiday season in the right way.” Don is known to throw in a few fun and festive videos that really put the icing on the cake and are always an audience favourite. The show sets a tone for people to refocus on what the season is really about. “The show has the right mix of Santa Claus and traditional songs. I’ve written a few songs that will be part of the Christmas show and I will play a few songs that are my own and not Christmas,” said Don. “My
favourite song to sing is ‘Silent Night’ and I have my own twist to it. I have my own song ‘All I Need This Christmas’ and I really enjoy playing that one too.” Don’s five-piece band will be playing the music. “It won’t be a rock show, but rather a fun show where the vocals will be featured. We want to mix it just right, so that people can hear the words and sing along if they want.” Don loves to get on stage and share Christmas with others. “I love to travel across Canada and celebrate Canadian music with people. We have a wide range of gifted artists across this country and I’m happy to be able to share my music. If I can continue to do this then I’m a blessed man.”
DAD Recognize a special occasion with an ad on this page!
Don just released his new Christmas album before heading off on tour. His 2018 release Evolution is all about embracing change. “I’ve always tip-toed the line of country music,” Don said. “This time I went more country, but I always try to be authentically me in whatever season I’m at in my life.” The Manitoba-based singer/songwriter has accomplished quite a bit along the way: winning multiple national and international awards (including Male Entertainer of the Year at the Aboriginal People’s Choice Awards), racking up three JUNO Award nominations and developing an enduring reputation as a compelling storyteller not only as a performer, but also as a speaker, with his Music is Medicine workshop. Co-produced by Bart McKay (Brett Kissel, Shane
Yellowbird) and Murray Pulver of Doc Walker, Evolution dwells heavily on the value of finding your place in the world and making peace with it. The record also displays his substantial depth as an artist as never before, and nowhere more so than on the album’s first two singles: “Church” and “Live While I’m Alive.” Don grew up in Winnipeg’s north end alongside poverty, gangs and drugs. Forward was the only direction that made sense. Even then, early on, country music was a big part of his life. “I grew up on it. My dad was a bluegrass/ country guitar picker from Nova Scotia, so we had East Coast kitchen parties at home–him and some buddies hanging out, drinking some beers, playing songs. Mom and Dad singing and playing was my first introduction to live music.”

Snow White is drama, dance By Murray Green
The talented dancers and drama students from AboutTime Productions will be bringing you Snow White, at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre, on Dec. 8 starting at 7 p.m. The narrated show will feature dances to further tell the story of Snow White. It is written in a way to include all of the students in one show. Don’t be surprised to see dwarfs performing a tap dance number to enhance the story line. The students offer a new spin on this classic fairy tale. Through a variety of presentation platforms, the students show off skills they have been working on throughout the term in the Snow White story. Instead of each class performing a number, all of the students take part in linking the story together through theatrical performances and dance numbers.

Shumka’s Nutcracker is a holiday classic, produced and performed by Alberta artists and includes local dancers. They will have two shows at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. A show will be starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14 and an encore show will be held on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m.
Eight dancers from the Veselka club in Camrose will join the professionals stage in the performance. Young dancers Paige Dyer, Keith Elliott, Presley Perry, Rendahl Gunderson, Autumn Joyce, Theia Elliot, Devyn Rasmuson and Evan Padilla are in the Nutcracker in Camrose. “I like being able to be different characters. It is
not just dancing, but being a character through dance,” said Keith, who has been dancing for six years. “Some people ask me why I don’t play hockey, but dancing is athletic. You need strong legs and it is fun being able to dance. My mom was in dance and her family took dance. My uncle was in Shumka, so it is a family tradition,” he added. Continued on page 22

Eight local dancers in Nutcracker Continued from page 19
“I like the culture of Ukrainian dancing and how it is so different than other types. It is more exciting for me,” said Paige, who has been dancing for four years. “My mom took me to a show because her friend’s daughter was in it. I really liked it, so that is why I joined. I like the costumes and how it is different than regular dance.” The Nutcracker is a luxurious and uniquely powerful production featuring ballet, folk dance and character dance in a celebration of Tchaikovsky’s beloved score. Shumka’s Nutcracker blends the grace and lyrical nature of classical movement with the strength of Ukrainian character dance, leaving audiences exhilarated and entertained. “We usually practice for a couple months and then have a show. Then we practice again for two months and then have a year end show,” shared Keith. “We also enter some competitions, like Vermilion and St. Albert. We also have a dance festival in Camrose and that is really fun,” said Paige. Clara’s Dream is the only Ukrainian folk ballet representation of Tchai-
kovsky’s Nutcracker. Given the famous composer’s Ukrainian heritage, the production incorporates Ukrainian Christmas traditions, folk and character dance, a grand orchestral version of Shchedryk (“Carol of the Bells”) and Ukrainian symbols woven into the lavish sets and costumes. Both Keith and Paige enjoyed the show last year, now they get to be part of the show. “I like watching the guys jump because it seems like they never come down,” said Keith, about the strength and athletic abilities of the dancers. “I like the way Shumka has taken the Nutcracker story and turned it into a dance on stage. They make it better, especially for those who like Ukrainian dance. They have given us a different version of an old story and I think that is so cool,” added Paige. Combining Ukrainian dance with Christmas is a treat for both dancers and viewers. “I think it is so much fun to tell the story with dance, music, costumes and everything that goes with it. It’s telling a story,” Keith shared. “It gives you that Christmas feeling. When

you dance in the Nutcracker it makes you think of Christmas, and dance and Christmas are two of my favourite things,” revealed Paige. The youngsters, both 10 years old, are excited to be on stage with professionals. “It means a lot to us. They are my role models and I want to be like them one day. I want to be able to dance like them and travel the world putting on shows like this. I want to be a Shumka dancer in the future,” Keith said. “It is inspiring to see what you could be later in life. I think dance is really awesome and being with the people in Shumka is like-wow! Just being with the dancers and learning from them is a great opportunity. It is cool to see how good they are at it,” said Paige. They encourage people to check out the show. “It is so inspiring for anyone in dance to see professionals and for anyone who wants to join,” suggested Keith. “It is amazing for the community to have a show like this in Camrose because it is more than just dance. It is the story of the Nutcracker before Christmas,” concluded Paige.

SPECIAL Holiday Coupons
Limited Time Offers
By Murray Green
With two straight victories, the Camrose Kodiaks are in a battle for third place in the south division in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Currently, four teams have 31 points. The Kodiaks tightened the division with wins over Olds and the Calgary Canucks on Nov. 23 and 27. Camrose scored two goals in the first period and added another early in the middle frame and then played well defensively to give them a 3-1 win. Carson Welke, newcomer Eric Miller and McKenzie Welke provided the offence with goals. Goalie Roddy Ross turned away 30 of 31 shots for the win. Camrose fired 23 shots at the Olds net. The script was the opposite against the Calgary Canucks. After Calgary scored first, it was all Kodiaks as they came back with three third period tallies top win by the same score, 3-1. Calgary scored in the first and the second period was scoreless. Then in the third, Kyler Kupka, Jacob Kendall and Damon Zimmer rallied the troops by scoring. Goalie Ross stopped 26 of 27 shots he faced. Camrose fired 48 shots on the Canucks net in front of only 85 fans. Camrose lost 5-3 to the Calgary Mustangs on Nov. 22. The Kodiaks skated away with a 2-2 tie after 20 minutes with goals from Cam McAdam and Dylan Williamson. Calgary sandwiched goals around Zach Vinnell’s tally in the middle frame. Calgary netted the only tally in the third period. Goalie Griffin Bowerman turned away 12 of 16 shots before Ross came in and stopped all 13 shots he faced. Camrose had 30 shots on goal. Isabell Mary Schneider July 11, 1937 ~ November 25, 2018 Isabell Mary Schneider of Camrose, Alberta, formerly of Rosalind, Alberta, passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2018, at the age of 81 years. Isabell was born to Richard and Mary Feth of Camrose on July 11, 1937, a little sister for brothers Joe and Adam. Isabell was raised in Camrose where she attended school, also where she met her best friend Jeanette Schandl. Over the years and right up until Isabell’s passing, they stayed close friends, sharing the good times and the bad! Isabell enjoyed spending time with Jeanette and we do know that the two were known to create a bit of mischief, all in good fun, of course! During her growing up years, Isabell’s love of music and some cinema led her to work at the theatre and she really enjoyed this job. Isabell married the love of her life, Ken Schneider, on July 11, 1956 and moved to the Rosalind area where they spent many years, right up until they sold the farm. Through all those years on the farm, Isabell was a constant support for Ken as he provided for the family and as they raised their eight children. Isabell was a person who radiated happiness and love, always smiling and making things better. Isabell always loved gardening; she always had big gardens and taught her children (and grandchildren) how to garden as well. A big part of Isabell’s gardening passion was in growing flowers. She took pride in her ability to grow a wide variety of flowers in several flowerbeds on the farm and in Camrose when they moved in off the farm. Isabell was always very involved with the local Catholic Church and the CWL and she was always appreciated for her willingness to take part in whatever needed to be done. She was also involved in the community, always willing to assist in any capacity. Once all the children were finished school, Isabell wanted to work outside the home. So true to her nature, she wanted to be around children and she took a janitor position at the Rosalind School where she loved interacting with them. After selling the farm, Isabell was thrilled to be able to move back into Camrose and she added quilting to her talents. She spent many hours making beautiful handcrafted items for many to enjoy, especially for her family to remember her by. Isabell’s family was her main passion and after her children grew, she found a new passion and that was the grandchildren and great-grandchildren for whom she would do anything! Once back in Camrose, Isabell’s love of assisting children led her to the Augustana Campus where she worked in the kitchen and really enjoyed interacting with the students. Isabell was a very kind, generous, fun-loving and compassionate person. She was loved by everyone she met and she always had something nice to say to everyone. She was loved greatly by her family and will be missed greatly by family and friends alike! Left to cherish her memory are her children Ron (Laura), Carol (Rod) Church, Deanna (Brian) Wilson, Mark (Lori), Brad (Val), Charlene (Ken) Jarrell, Scott (Kathy) and Anita (Bill) Heisler; twenty-eight grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; brother Adam (Louise) Feth; and she is also survived by Jeanette Schandl. Isabell was predeceased by her husband Ken; parents Richard and Mary Feth; grandson Thomas Schneider; great-grandson Sam Amstutz; brother Joe; and sister-in-law Anita Feth. A Funeral Mass was held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, 5010-48A Avenue, Camrose with Father Joseph Jacobson officiating. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Isabell’s memory may be made to S.T.A.R.S. Air Ambulance as well as the Alberta Cancer Foundation or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Sex, sexuality, our schools
Last week, my class at Augustana, AUIDS 100: Inquiry in the social sciences, engaged in a very engaging, important, and column-inspiring discussion on the topic of sex and sexuality within school systems. Few other topics are as controversial and ideologically loaded, as recent accounts in the media have demonstrated. When our children should be taught about sex and sexShauna Wilton, Political uality, what they should be Studies, Augustana taught and how they should Campus, University be taught are not simple of Alberta questions. Recently, Alberta has seen heated public debate over the government’s act to support gay-straight alliances within all publicly funded schools in Alberta. The negative reaction includes a court case representing a few independent schools challenging the privacy requirements of the government bill that stops schools from informing parents if their child joins a gaystraight alliance at school. The lawyers also called alliances “ideological sex clubs.” Prior to the beginning of this school year in Ontario, the Conservative government of Premier Rob Ford tried to move back in time, revoking the 2015 sexual education curriculum for Grades 1 to 8 and introducing an interim curriculum that removes discussions of consent, non-heterosexual activity and identities, and the role of social media, sexting and online bullying. The Alberta curriculum for sexual education is undergoing some revisions, including Premier Notley’s commitment to include conversations about consent for all school age children. The curriculum is taught as part of health and life skills (Grades 4 to 9) and career and life management (Grades 10 to 12) and focuses on puberty (Grade 4), reproduction (Grade 5), blood-borne infections, abstinence and decision making (Grades 6 and 7), STIs and contraception (Grade 8), and reducing sexual risk and (finally) consent in Grade 9. The high school curriculum continues with these themes and addresses gender identity. All of this is, of course, optional, as parents must provide permission for their children to participate. Arguably, some of the issues, such as consent, could be raised earlier. As well, the absence of curricular goals related to social media and the Internet are troubling. Anyone with kids these days knows how much time they spend online and how much communication occurs via social media sites such as Snapchat and Instagram. More education about how these sites work, privacy and the abuse of social media was irrelevant when I was in school, but is essential now. Research shows that comprehensive and accurate sexual education helps students feel more informed, leads to them making safer choices, and results in fewer unplanned pregnancies and transmission of STIs. Further research suggests that the content of sexual education curriculum should be contextual and based partially on what the kids think they need to know about (and it might not be the same as what their parents want). Increasingly, calls for education about consent, gender identity, and internet safety are being taught to children at younger ages, although in age-appropriate ways. Young children, for example, can learn about respecting their bodies and personal boundaries, or discuss what they think it means to be a girl or a boy and what it means for those who might not fit into those categories. The 2010 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children Study indicated that approximately 23 per cent of Grade 9 males, 18 per cent of Grade 9 females, and 31 per cent of Grade 10 males and females have had sexual intercourse. Research suggests that alcohol use may play a role in this and other studies suggest that around two-thirds of Grade 9 and 10 students had tried alcohol at least once and over half the Grade 10 students reported binge-drinking. The Government of Alberta reported that in 2013, 15.6 per cent of all STIs reported in the Calgary zone were among teens aged 15 to 19 and nearly half of all STIs were reported among youth aged 15 to 24. These statistics demonstrate the importance of educating our children about healthy, diverse, and consensual sexual behaviours. Promoting abstinence has not proven effective; rather our children need the tools to safely navigate their relationships and social environment and progressive and inclusive education can provide these tools.

The Camrose Booster thanks you for your interest in the letters page and encourages your comments. Carbon reduction
Only 20 per cent of the world’s 7.5 billion people are rich enough to live above the global average income of about $10,000 per family per year. Today, the poor six billion want and deserve more, but their improved standard of living is directly proportional to increased energy use. About 80 per cent of global energy is generated from carbon-based fuels and this will not change overnight. Carbon use is growing and will continue to grow. To get Canadians to use significantly less carbon would require painful and punishing levels of taxation. Economic studies show that carbon taxes in Canada would need to be about 10 times higher than today to force the targeted reductions. Alberta’s carbon tax is going to $30 per tonne while Sweden’s tax works at $180 per tonne, but that would translate to more than $2 per litre gas prices in Canada. No government today has the grit and determination to force such measures, and if they tried, they wouldn’t be in power long. Provinces are already trying to opt out by electing governments that are against carbon taxes. Finland, which is a cold northern country, has CO2 emissions about half of Canada’s levels so it can be done, but their average family income is about $39,000 per year versus $70,000 in Canada. Are you ready to take a big cut in your family income? Today’s low-level carbon taxes and refunds are a red herring, using fear to make us (but mainly governments) look and feel better while nothing happens and money and time are wasted. The real danger is that they mislead us into thinking
that we’re doing something when we’re not. These taxes and refunds show a lack of understanding on the part of governments while giving them and their supporters a false sense of righteous superiority. If it’s going to happen, climate change will happen. And then the world will deal with it. A 2ºC global temperature rise will mean problems, but not the end of the world as environmentalists would want us to believe. The best way to face the future is from a position of strength with a debt-free, competitive economy that utilizes Canada’s strengths in resources. In other words, the exact opposite of what our governments are doing today. As individuals, we should share and exercise restraint and decency in our own consumption. About half our energy consumption comes from transportation and the other half from heating. So use less of both. Tony Hladun, Camrose Deal locally
As a follow-up to the Booster ad in the Nov. 27 edition, to which I give an empathetic “thumbs up”, I would like to enlighten the citizens of Camrose about what has been happening on the bottle drive scene. For the past couple of years many of the sports and community groups have been solicited by an out-oftown bottle depot to take and process their bottles and cans. That depot then positions their trailer at the Recreation Centre parking lot or other city locations (on which they pay no taxes, no insurance no up-keep, no maintenance) and proceed to have the young groups fill it. Then they go out of town for processing and profit. The product going
LOYAL SERVICE
into that trailer has been, for the most part, purchased in Camrose by our citizens and yet is drained out of our economy. Our bottle depot has been locally owned and operated in Camrose for over 32 years and we take great pride in shopping locally. The bottle drives we handle are coordinated so as not to have bookings too close together, thus making it fair for each group. Now with the outside interference there are often two or three drives back-to-back which makes it very discouraging for the young people who are making the effort to knock on the doors only to find that some other group has just been there. In all fairness to the unsuspecting Camrosians, many I am sure are not even aware that an outside bottle depot is operating here. The depot industry is territorial by distance and population and if all the depots had the business scruples and ethics to conduct themselves according to the rules, these conflicts would not arise. I am confident that with this information in mind, you may be able to encourage the respective groups to deal locally. It would be very interesting to know what percentage of the parents of the sports teams and other groups own or work for a Camrose business to make their own livelihood and yet continue to funnel an average of $1,000 per drive out of town. I would also like to sincerely thank groups who have stuck with us over all the years. Our new facility now allows for inside sorting or “drop-off” drives and we continue to have dozens of charitable groups on file for any customers who wish to have their empties donated. Neilsen couldn’t resist a Chevy short box By Murray Green
There is something about a Chevy short box that attracts many classic truck enthusiasts. For Ron Neilsen, it is his 1981 Chevrolet C10 short box truck. “I bought this truck from a friend of mine that I went to school with. His son, from White Rock, BC, bought it off a lady who was the original owner. I’m the third owner of the truck,” explained Ron, about his prized possession. “When the truck was bought new, it had a six-cylinder motor with a three on the tree transmission with no options, period. No power steering or power brakes. He (the previous owner) built the truck up after tearing it apart and leaving it laying for 10 years,” said Ron. The C/K was Chevrolet and GMC’s full-size pickup truck line from October 1959 until 2000 in the United States and Canada. The C indicated two-wheel drive and K indicated fourwheel drive. The aging C/K light-duty pickup truck was replaced with the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra names in 1999. Until this time, the names Silverado and Sierra were used to identify the trim level of the C/K trucks. He recalled the state the truck was in when he first heard about it. “It was in his garage and then along came two kids and it laid

there. I went there one fall and looked at it. He put it all back together for me, except the upholstery. I decided to buy it and finish it.” Ron wanted to turn the plain truck into a joy to drive around the city. “I put new tires on it, a tilt column in it, I took out the Super T 10-4 speed out and put in
FUN FACTS
C-Series pickups included two-wheel drive and featured an independent front suspension (IFS) system with contoured lower control “A” arms and coil springs. GM’s new Load Control rear suspension system took up residence in the back. The load control rear suspension system consisted of a rear live axle with dual stage Vari-Rate multi-leaf springs and asymmetrical (offset) shock absorber geometry, to help sort out any wheel hop under heavy loads or hard acceleration. A properly equipped C-Series half-ton class pickup could tow up to 8,000 pounds (four tons) of braked trailer. A mid-life cycle cosmetic facelift and mechanical refresh was carried out for the 1981 model year. In response to the 1979 energy crisis, the 1981 rework featured several fuel saving techniques to help make the Rounded-Line C/K-Series pickups more fuel efficient. Again, engineers turned to wind tunnels to resculpt the front end with new sheet metal, reducing areas which could hinder air flow and cause drag.
a 700R4 transmission with extra clutches and discs in it and power brakes.” A new four-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic 700R4 transmission with overdrive gearing became available in 1981 for the 1982 model year. Chrome front bumpers were now standard on base models. He added a little power, but his intention was to make the truck easier to drive for every day use. “I dropped it four-anda-half inches in front and six inches in the back. I re-did the interior with new door panels, new upholstery on the seats and rugs. I’m pretty well finished other than I want to put a stereo in it,” said Ron. He also likes to share stories with other people at local car shows. “I use it as a daily driver, so it’s not too fancy. It was painted in 1999 and it still looks good. I had been to several car shows before buying it and I have always liked the Chevy C10 short
boxes, because they are kind of rare. I just love them and the colour (yellow). I just like Chevy trucks,” he added. Ron inherited a better motor than the original engine.
“One

this
young guy made $6,500 cleaning fish, so he spent over $6,000 on a ZZ4 crate engine, so it is hopped up pretty good,” said Ron.

Police take safety at intersections seriously By Lori Larsen With the bridge replacement complete and traffic flowing east and west on 48th Avenue again, the temporary four-way stops that were implemented at the intersections of 47 Avenue and 53 Street, and 47 Avenue and 50 Street, have been removed. During the 48th Avenue Bridge Replacement project the City also placed temporary parking restrictions along various roadways to not only enhance movement of vehicular traffic but improve safety by increasing the visibility for drivers at intersections. After review by the City of the intersections at 47 Avenue and 53 Street and 47 Avenue and 50 Street, it was determined that the intersection of 47 Avenue and 50 Street had issues regarding visibility and subsequent safety along 50 Street due to parking on 50 Street. It was decided to expand the parking restrictions on the north and south sides of this intersection. Intersections can be some of the most dangerous parts of roadways in both rural and urban settings and assuming the other driver will do the right thing at an intersection can not only be a costly but a serious error. The following are some guidelines and suggestions on traffic safety. When approaching an intersection, whether posted or not, drivers are
reminded to obey all traffic laws and always keep safety in mind. Keep a reasonable distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. Check cross-traffic before proceeding at intersections controlled by traffic devices such as lights or signage. Use your vehicle’s turn signal to indicate when you are making a turn. Always come to a complete stop at intersections controlled by stop signs and only proceed when safe to do so. Failure to stop at a stop sign can result in a $287 fine and three demerits. At a four-way stop remember the Right of Way rule–you must yield to the vehicle on your right. Never speed up to go through the intersection on a yellow light. A yellow light means prepare to stop or clear the intersection. Clear visibility for vehicles approaching intersections is vital and for that reason there are parking restrictions throughout the city. “You can not park within five metres in any direction of any intersection,” explained Camrose Police Service Constable Cossette. “At a crosswalk it means five metres to the closest point of a crosswalk (crosswalk line marking on road nearest to your vehicle) and five metres from any stop or yield sign.” Continued on page 31
The CAMROSE BOOSTER, December 4, 2018 – Page 31
Winter On The Road Safety at intersections Continued from page 30
Constable Cossette further explained, stop/yield signs are usually more than five metres because the signs themselves are often placed a couple of metres away from the intersection. The five metre rule applies at all intersections unless indicated otherwise by a traffic control device. “A good rule of thumb (to use as a guideline for determining five metres) is the size of a full-sized pickup truck,” said Cossette. This not only allows for pedestrians to cross safely and be able to see oncoming traffic, but also allows a clear line of view for other vehicles approaching the intersection and for larger vehicles, such as semi truck and trailer, to be able to safely negotiate turns at intersections.

Stats speak volumes
The statistics for 2017 indicated there were 647 reported collisions in Camrose. “Almost one third of them occurred at intersections,” said Cossette. “Most major intersections where the majority of the collisions occurred were along 48th Avenue.” There were 23 collisions at 68 Street and 48 Avenue and 15 collisions at 53 Street and 48 Avenue. Cossette commented that the detour this year on 48th Avenue, as a result of the bridge construction, will have an impact on the amount of collisions that occurred at the intersection of 53 Street and 48 Avenue for 2018. “Following the rules of the Traffic Safety Act, sharing the roadway and being courteous will ensure that everyone has a positive and safe commute,” concluded Cossette.

Camrose Police located a motor vehicle that was parked in an alleyway. A 35-year-old woman was in the vehicle and had warrants for her arrest. A search located a small amount of Methamphetamine, Heroin and morphine pills. The woman was brought back to the police service where she was later released to appear in court. A west end business called and advised they caught a shoplifter inside of the store. Police attended and spoke with a 21-yearold man who agreed to participate in a Alternative Measures Program.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Members of the community donated gifts to the Camrose Kinettes Silent Santa program to pass on to less fortunate children. Volunteers from left are Meranda Bruneau, Chris Shuman, Tricia Herridge, Cassy Batchelor and representing the Camrose Kodiaks is Ethan Heidepriem. Silent Santa is still in need of gifts for teenagers.
Jackie Lovely was named the United Conservative Party candidate for the next election. She will be running in the Camrose riding when an election is called, likely in the spring. She was appointed after a Nov. 24 vote, when 1,048 people cast a ballot. “Over two days of voting, more than 1,000 United Conservative members in Camrose cast their ballot for their preferred candidate for the next election from among five great contestants,” said leader Jason Kenney. “I would like to con-
gratulate Jackie Lovely on winning this incredibly competitive race.” Rob Johnson, Dawn Anderson, Trevor Miller and Brandon Lunty were also vying for the candidate position. No details of the votes for each candidate were released. “Jackie is no stranger to conservative party politics, having volunteered and contributed to campaigns and the movement for years. With a wealth of experience in business, Jackie understands the challenges faced by Alberta’s entrepreneurial community,” added Kenney.

Pedestrian safety at intersections By Lori Larsen
The old adage, always check twice before crossing the road, still hails true today and is a valuable lesson we all could heed. With one third of all 2017 reported collisions in Camrose occurring at an intersection, pedestrians and motorists need to be extra cautious while traversing the City. The following tips are provided by Camrose Police Service regarding pedestrian safety. Pedestrians
Pedestrians are advised to check traffic before crossing the street and only proceed when it is safe to do so. Do not jaywalk and always use crosswalks and pedestrian-activated signals when they are available. At all times pedestrians should be aware of their surroundings and not distracted by cell phones or other electronic devices. If a pedestrian is crossing at any point other than in a crosswalk, they shall yield the right of way to vehicles on the roadway. A pedestrian can be charged and fined $78 for failing to yield to vehicles on a roadway. If a pedestrian is crossing in a crosswalk, they have the right of way over vehicles. Pedestrians are required to cross as quickly as reasonable, without stopping or loitering which will impede traffic. When a pedestrian is standing at a crosswalk waiting for traffic and vehicles are not stopping, the pedestrian should show their intent to use the crosswalk. This can be done by raising your arm at a right angle to your body and pointing to the opposite curb. If it is not clear and you have not shown your intention to use the crosswalk, technically traffic is not required to stop for you.

If the driver of a vehicle fails to yield the right of way to a pedestrian who is in a crosswalk they can be charged and fined $776. When a pedestrian has indicated their intention to cross the street at a crosswalk (but is not in the crosswalk), a person driving a vehicle shall stop and allow the pedestrian to cross. If the driver fails to allow a pedestrian to use
a crosswalk they can be charged and fined $155. Both pedestrians and motorists have a responsibility to ensure they are abiding by traffic laws and regulations and keeping safety as the number one priority.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Getting outside in the winter is a great way for families to be active. But remember to keep your child safe while doing winter activities and playing in the snow. To help lower the risk of your child getting hurt, make sure: you supervise your child closely; your child is always in a safe place; you and your child know about any dangers; your child does age-appropriate activities. Winter safety
Check the weather forecast so you know how to dress for the day. Choose play areas with warm shelters nearby. Dress in layers. Have a windproof, waterproof
outer layer. Wear a hat to keep the ears covered. If under three, your child’s head is larger than the rest of the body and heat is lost quickly from the head; mittens instead of gloves; warm, dry, waterproof boots that aren’t too tight; a neck warmer instead of scarf; clothes without drawstrings. Snow forts can be fun, but building tunnels can be dangerous. Tunnels can collapse and suffocate a child. Watch your child for wet clothes, feeling chilled, frostbite, and being tired. Teach your child about frostbite and hypothermia and how important it is to dress warmly.

Day in life Continued from page 34
Throughout the 30 minute checkstop I guessed that at least 40 vehicles were checked and I can accurately state that I did not hear one negative comment from the drivers/passengers, and in fact most thanked the officers for keeping the streets safe and doing the job they do. Back on patrol with Ofrim and around 10:30 p.m., dispatch radioed a call to a local business that was dealing with a less than cooperative customer. “We’ll respond to that,” said Ofrim confirming his attendance to the location with dispatch. “Drunk patron that doesn’t want to leave the bar.” It was Friday night, wasn’t this type of call to be expected, yet my stomach churned a bit. Mixing alcohol with high emotion can be lethal. Upon our arrival, Constable Ofrim advised me to remain in the PC. He approached two civilians standing at the entrance of the establishment. One was quite obviously a staff member of the business, the other the subject of the complaint. I studied Ofrim’s response, he stood back slightly from the two subjects. The staff member returned inside leaving Ofrim, and now Cossette, who had arrived on scene shortly after, to deal with the rather inebriated and somewhat belligerent customer. Within minutes Sergeant Steil arrived and suggested I come out and listen to what they deal with on a regular basis, under the protective eye of himself and at a safe distance. For at least 20 minutes Constables Ofrim and Cossette reasoned with the suspect. I watched in amazement as both officers, without ever having to resort to any type of physical tactics, talked the man into leaving the premises peacefully. “Just go home and sleep it off (he used the subject’s first name),” said Ofrim. It did take a few more minutes of the subject bantering back and forth, but he finally left the area. No harm no foul. At around 11:30 p.m. I was beginning to feel the pangs of working a night shift, so I opted to depart when Ofrim returned to the station for a quick lunch break. I thanked everyone for their willingness to share their shift with me then left, knowing these officers, members of our community, and more importantly, family and friends still had about four hours left on their shift. Out there guarding the gates, making sure we, as citizens of Camrose, can sleep easy, but also hoping that with no incident, they can safely return to their own homes at the end of watch.

A Christmas Carol brought to life by Churchmice Players By Murray Green
The Churchmice Players version of A Christmas Carol is a great way to launch the holiday season. Kevin Schole does a remarkable job of playing Ebenezer Scrooge, the miserly and unloved old man. Although Kevin might not be as mean-spirited at the original Scrooge (this is a family show after all), he plays the part well with well rehearsed lines and remorse. Director Bradley Moshuk follows the traditional movie story line with Alastair Sim (a 1951 movie based on Charles Dicken’s 1843 classic book). If you missed the opening weekend, don’t fall into a Scrooge-like despair. The Churchmice Players will be performing four more shows at the Bailey Theatre on Dec. 6, 7 and 8, with an added matinee on Dec. 8. Dinner theatres will be held on Dec. 6, 7 and 8,with dinner at 6 and show starting at 7:30 p.m. The matinee for Dec. 8, begins at 2 p.m. The young and middle-
aged Ebenezer, children, Mr. Cratchit, Patricia and bystanders all played their parts well. Steve Lyster as Marley, Colleen Nelson as Mrs. Cratchit, Christopher Reinhart as Mr. Benidict and Dan Johnson as Fred, did a fantastic job of bringing their characters out to the fullest. The Churchmice Players features a local cast of about 20 extremely talented performers as they bring the classic tale to life for the community. A nice added touch to the play was the addition of carollers singing Christmas songs before and between set changes to keep the energy going. With three acts and two breaks, the music of the holidays was a good idea to fill the gaps. The only thing I thought could be improved upon is that the street noises sometimes interfered with character lines to make them hard to hear. If you are humbug about the holidays so far, attending this play will soon get you in the Christmas spirit.
Hockey Vikings split By Murray Green
The Augustana Vikings hockey team split a series with the SAIT Trojans by losing 6-2 and winning 6-5, Nov. 23 and 24. In the first game, SAIT built up a 3-0 lead before Carter Danczak replied for the Vikings in the second period. Former Camrose Kodiaks player Estian Coetzee scored for the Trojans and then Jimmy Sheehan gave the Vikings its second tally. SAIT added two more markers in the third. Goalie Curtis Skip stopped 31 of 37 shots for the Vikings. Augustana fired 25 at the SAIT net. In the rematch in Calgary, SAIT scored first, but Augustana netted four middle frame markers to pull ahead. However, SAIT opened the third with four straight before the Vikings responded with the tying and game winning tallies. Single markers were scored by Travis Mayan, Sheehan, Adam Osczevski, Dillan McCombie, Cody Fiala and Ben Lanfermann. Skip started the game in net for the Vikings allowing one goal on six shots. Zach deGraves came in to make 29 saves on 33 shots. Augustana recorded 30 shots on goal. Volleyball
The women’s volleyball team lost 3-0 and 3-1 to Lakeland in action on Nov. 23 and 24. In the first match, Rae
Metrunec had six kills, and Karen Wagner recorded 12 assists to lead the squad. In the rematch, Shae Boyes had nine kills, Wagner added 22 assists and Boyes chipped in with 12 digs. Augustana men’s team won 3-0 and lost 3-2 to Lakeland. In the first match, the Vikings were led by Owen Murray with nine kills, Logan Pasishnik with 26 assists and Thomas Zimmerman with seven digs. The leaders in the rematch for the Vikings were Lyndon Varga with 12 kills, Pasishnik with 37 assists and Zimmerman with 12 digs. Basketball
The Vikings women’s team defeated King’s Eagles 73-40 on Nov. 23. Samantha Dargis led the Vikings with 19 points and Jessica Haenni chipped in with 15. On the men’s side, Augustana defeated the Eagles 92-73 with Nathan Bowie leading the way with 26 points and Michael Stasuik added 15. Curling
The Vikings mixed curling team tied for first place with a 4-1 record at the fall regionals on Nov. 23 to 25 in Red Deer. The Vikings beat Olds, NAIT, Portage and Red Deer. The women’s squad had a 2-4 record with wins over Lakeland and Concordia, while the men went 1-5 with a win over MacEwan.

County partners with handivan By Murray Green
Camrose County will be entering into an agreement with the Rose City Handivan Society, to provide specialized transportation services on a sixmonth trial basis. At the regular meeting on Nov. 27, Councillor Cindy Trautman made the motion to assist anyone within the County with Handivan transportation, who would need the service. Council rejected a previous request from the Handivan Society, because it covered only residents who lived within 20 kilometers of the City of Camrose. Councilors felt that it wasn’t fair to the rest
of the residents who may need the service. Terms and conditions would remain the same. Users would pay $12 per ride and the County would subsidize at $1.50 per kilometer and $25 per hour (or portion) of the transportation time. The agreement will be reviewed in six months to review how many people need the service. “It would be subsidized by the County and ratepayers, should anyone use the service,” said administrator Paul King. Currently, there is no demand for this service, but it would fill in as a back-up if people don’t have other means of transportation for those with mobility issues.
“If we find people are using the service, I wouldn’t have an issue of the user paying more for the cost of using the service either,” added councillor Trautman. “That is why I’m in favour of doing it as a pilot project, especially in the winter when it could be needed most.” Service would be subject to availability of the handivan. Any Camrose County resident who requires specialized transportation would be provided transportation services, based on van and driver availability, during the society’s regular hours of operation. However, this doesn’t include village residents.

By Lori Larsen
Tucked in among all the amenities of the west end including Duggan Mall, restaurants and the Smith Clinic, this very well-maintained senior condo takes the guessing out of maintenance-free living. Beautifully finished with newer flooring, white interior doors and trim and subtle paint colours, the condo boasts a trendy look. The good-sized living room has a corner gas fireplace to cozy up in front of, while watching the sunrise from your east-facing windows. Just off the living room is an amazing sunroom that could be used as an exercise or hobby room. Imagine a painting studio with all the natural light. The kitchen has plenty of cabinet space and a pantry for even more storage and is complete with refrigerator, stove and dishwasher. The master suite has its own private four-piece ensuite and dual closets for either his and hers or to separate seasonal clothing. The in-suite laundry room has even
Wally Wrubleski more storage space, a stackable washer and dryer and upright freezer for easy access. Another bonus room can be used for overnight guests or as your inhome office.
