’Twas the week before Christmas

The weeks before Christmas are sometimes nutso, what with extra concerts and parties, gift shopping and giving, special foods and drinks we only have in this season… I’m enjoying reading about all the great activities going on in our communities–the concerts, the celebrations, the acts of generosity and sometimes the acts of whimsy are uplifting. And a few stories are Grinchy. In the past few weeks, the news has included two stories about 17-year-old boys who live in Alberta. ***

One story on the Grinchier side happened in Grande Prairie. A 17-year-old boy had worked for about a year and a half at one of those huge stores that sell everything from groceries to electronics to clothes to furniture. The boy took over the store intercom system and made a selfie video of himself saying, “Attention shoppers, I quit!” He then went on to make comments describing how employees were treated badly by the store. The store issued a statement saying they were “disappointed” by the video, that “respect for associates and customers” is their value, and that they are investigating. I had mixed feelings reading the story. On one hand, as someone who has been an employer, I was cringing on behalf of the employer. On the other hand, as someone who has heard from retail employees about how some retailers treat staff, I didn’t doubt the accuracy of the boy’s description of incidents. According to the news item, the boy had already nailed down another job before making his very public “I quit” announcement. Probably just as well. ***

The other story began decades ago, and happened to a 17-year-old boy who’s now an adult living in St. Albert. On Christmas Eve when he was 17 years old, his girlfriend gave him a small Christmas package and then immediately broke up with him. As a 17-year-old, he was devastated. He didn’t open the gift but took it home, threw it under the Christmas tree and vowed never to open it. He kept it unopened– for decades. During that time he married and had a family. In the early years, he kept putting the unopened gift under the Christmas tree every year. Finally one year his wife asked him to please stop doing that. But he still kept the unopened package. It became sort of a tradition. Fast forward. It’s now been 50 years. He and his wife have reconnected with the exgirlfriend and even become friends. The ex-girlfriend could no longer remember what the gift was. As a fundraiser for the local Christmas bureau, they had an event at which the 50-year-old package would be opened. And so, in front of a packed café, standing on a stage with the man and his wife, the ex-girlfriend opened the gift. “Oh no” were her first words. “I can’t give that to him.” The gift was a small book called Love Is: New Ways to Spot That Certain Feeling with cartoons and sayings about love. “The irony is extreme,” she said. The man’s response, looking around at the crowd who attended the fundraiser, was, “Love is all of us, all of you, here tonight for the Christmas Bureau.” Perfect.

Thank you, Tony Hladun, for your refreshing dose of reality in your recent letter on carbon taxes. Your observation that the only predictable result of heavily taxing fossil fuels is to put more of the world in poverty, is very astute and completely on the mark. The recent riots in France should be a wakeup call to the elitist leaders in other countries as well, including Canada, that people are not prepared to sacrifice what little they have just so their wealthy politicians can preach on the world stage that they are somehow “saving the planet.” The theory (and it is nothing more than a theory) that increasing amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will eventually cause a slight rise in temperatures, does not seem very important to the average person. It is also interesting when governments talk about their “carbon taxes”

(i.e. carbon dioxide taxes) as being “revenue neutral.” If their objective is to reduce CO2 emissions by affecting behaviours, how exactly are behaviours affected if the punishing costs of those behaviours are returned? Either they are lying about the neutrality, or it is just another wealth redistribution scheme. The major difference between the preachings and prophesies of doom from the climate alarmists, and the great Y2K scam is that the latter had a defined end date. This one is likely to carry on for many more years, unless more and more of the world’s population call the bluff, and turn off the funding from our tax dollars. My goodness. How wonderful to read that a younger person has respect and heartfelt admiration for oilfield workers in this

province. I must say that some of the older citizenry here do not feel the same way (although, it may be temporary, given some circumstances from time to time) and it is sad. Sarah Michel, you should be immensely proud of what you have written, and what you stand for. I am in awe. You are a “warrior” woman and the workers out there in the oilfields should feel grateful that you stand by them. One hardly ever reads or hears about how hard these workers do work. Hard work is a “blessing” (whether in disguise or not) and is sorely misinterpreted by some. There are many people who feel greatly rewarded for “hard work” no matter what life direction they take. Without these workers times would be bad indeed. Oil is oil and it needs handling and “dirty hands” will accomplish so much. Good on you. Keep on applauding. Emily Cooper, Camrose

Everyone Reads The Booster Marthe Woodward, of Camrose, was one of five Camrosians and twenty other individuals from the province of Manitoba, who journeyed to Bosnia recently. The trip allowed these Canadians to celebrate together and deepen their lives of faith. The twenty-four hour trip to Medjuderia was a fascinating prayer-filled pilgramage. The location is the site where an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary was reportedly seen in 1981, by six young people. Remembering Rosehaven 71 years later By Murray Green

Ruth Sehn remembers that day, Dec. 10, 1947, when Rosehaven opened 71 years ago. “On that cold December morning, 20 residents, at that time referred to as mental patients, departed the Ponoka Mental Hospital to take up residence at Camrose in a building directly across from St. Mary’s Hospital,” recalled Ruth. “The staff had much cleaning to do prior to the patients arriving. All of the old army cots were very low and what a difference it made when we didn’t have to bend so low over each bed. When we received new beds, I thought I had died and gone to Heaven,” said Ruth. That building, named Rosehaven, had at one time been used as an elementary school and was built in 1914. “One staff member, Dalphine Fitzgerald, had been a young student there. It was used as the Normal School (a school where young teachers were trained) until 1938.” When the war broke out, it became the army residence for the officers from 1939-45. Other various army structures were used for a laundry building, maintenance, staff residence and a recreational hut. In 1947, when Rosehaven opened its doors to Ponoka patients, they were all 70 years of age and older. “I remember later on some of our residents made it to 100. I think one old gentleman had his 103rd birthday,” recalled Ruth. W hen Rosehaven opened, Miss Olive Kemp (RN and later Olive Noonan) was in charge as the matron. Mrs. Clara Felton was her assistant. were two male nurses at the time. Arthur Clarke was the caretaker and Al Henkelman was the maintenance foreman and his wife was in charge of the sewing room. Lloyd Rudd, Pete Matheson and George Gunderson were three of the first boiler men. Ruth thought that Archie Hartman was in charge of stores and his wife was also in the sewing room. In the kitchen was the head cook and chef John Innis. He had help from Jim Lawrence, Vic Foder, Jarvin Grove, Lloyd Grove and later Bert Stang. Dining hall staff were Yvonne

Fetzner, Frieda Redmond and Irene Fetzner. Female ward staff were Dora Stark, Frieda Hanson, Ruth Salmon (Sehn) and Adoline Anderson. The housekeeper was Mrs. Alice Anderson. The first male staff were Oscar Skogness, Oscar Neilson and Jack Clark. Ellen Chitty, later Ellen Lawrence, was in charge of the laundry. The staff quickly grew as the demand for clean laundry increased. The number of patients grew to about 250. “We had an active woodworking shop and they made some wonder-

ful creations on the third floor.” The office staff included Mr. Cal Henry, Mrs. Milner, Maxine Badry and Thelma Skaret. The old hostess hut was renovated and named the Paden Cottage. Briarcrest was built in 1953 and Montrose was added in 1954. Two years later, Hawthorn was added and soon the patients grew to 510, which is believed to be the highest number reached. “It is a joy and yet a sadness to think back over so many years,” shared Ruth. The patients were numbered in alphabetical order

at the time of admittance to Rosehaven. “I recall ‘A’ was a tiny, sweet lady, less than five feet tall. We all loved her,” said Ruth. “Later on, we had two ladies admitted from Ponoka who had been patients in the Brandon Hospital fire in about 1912 or 1913 and they were amongst several sent to Ponoka Mental Hospital from Brandon.” Exactly 71 years ago today (Dec. 10), Frieda (nee Hanson) Jones and Ruth walked through the front door at Rosehaven to begin helping patients.

services available over the holiday season. For those facing a situation of family violence, call the Family Violence Info Line at 310-1818. It is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and in more than 170 languages, or through online chat daily, from noon to 8 p.m. There are also more phone lines that can help. Child Abuse Hotline: 1-800-387-KIDS (5437); Bullying Helpline: 1-888-4562323; The Mental Health Help Line is also available 24/7 and can provide support to anyone with mental health concerns at 1-877-302-2642. During the holiday closure from Dec. 24 to Jan. 1, 2019 essential services and resources that support the health, safety and security of Albertans will continue to be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Alberta’s favourite rock band in the ’70s and ’80s will be playing a concert at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Centre next June. The Stampeders, icons in Canadian music, will be performing in a few select theatres across the Prairies next spring. They will be in Camrose on June 5 for a 7:30 p.m. show. They’re on their way, to the city lights…and bringing along all their classic hits such as “Wild Eyes,” “Carry Me,” “Oh My Lady,” “Devil You,” “Mon-

day Morning Choo Choo,” “Minstrel Gypsy,” “Hit the Road Jack” and the Canadian Hall of Fame song “Sweet City Woman.” They will take you back in time to remember tie-dyed t-shirts, elevator shoes and 15-cent coffee. No ’70s group represented Canada’s musical identity to the world like The Stampeders. A quick look at Canada’s music scene from 1971 until 1976 confirms The Stampeders were truly the country’s international musical ambassadors, touring more extensively in Canada and

overseas than any other Canadian group during that time. In 1977, the trio Rich Dodson (lead guitar), Kim Berly (drums) and Ronnie King (bass) parted company but reunited, fittingly, at the Calgary Stampede, 15 years later in 1992. Since then, they’ve been recognized by SOCAN for their Lifetime Achievement, been inducted into the SOCAN Songwriters Hall of Fame on five occasions and the Canadian Songwriters’ Hall of Fame for their 1971 hit “Sweet City Woman”.

Pillow seamstresses ease patient pain By Murray Green

Four young girls in Camrose gathered together to take on a sewing project to ease the pain for patients at Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose. It all started when Janice Olafson visited her mother Alma Falk in

the hospital. She saw how the nurses used rolled up facecloths to keep patients in place. She thought of a better way to add comfort. “When my mom was in the hospital, Dr. (Donna) Morrow was checking her and saw these little pillows my granddaugh-

ters made for her. The nurses put them under her hands and Dr. Morrow thought it was a good idea. She had suggested that, if my granddaughters were willing, they could make some more for the hospital to use in Unit 5,” said Janice. “My mom broke her pelvis, so

the pillows helped ease her pain.” On a day off from school, sisters Carys, 10, and Avey Olafson, eight, sought the help of friend Claire Lansing, 10, and her sister Brynn, 13. The four young ladies sewed for three straight hours in Janice’s kitchen to cre-

ate 112 little pillows to donate to the hospital. Brynn was also eager to provide sewing assistance and guidance to the others to count as volunteer hours for school. The pillows were delivered to St. Mary’s Hospital on Dec. 12.

Minister Helps assists Camrose United Church By Murray Green

Camrose United Church added diaconal Minister John Helps to the ministerial team this summer as he completes his studies. He joined Rev. Liz Carter-Morgan on staff to assist in leading the church in worship and pastoral care.

“I’m at the tail end of my studies. I was asked to assist in pastoral care and Christian education with Bible studies,” said John. “My appointment to Camrose United Church doesn’t have anything to do with my studies. My practical training is finished, I’m

just finishing some course work.” John is originally from Edmonton. He completed his last practicum in Osoyoos, BC and was asked to stay on after, prior to answering the call to move to Camrose. “If I had to trace it back, I originally went to school for criminal justice. I worked for little over a year as a private investigator. As I was understanding that world, I realized I wasn’t fulfilled in what I was doing. I wanted to work with people. I started to dabble in community work with agencies, enjoyed it and did that for the next years,” explained John. “I got to a point where I was feeling an itch in the back of my head to let more spirit into what I was doing. I wanted to feel more like I was contributing to the betterment of the world. I was, but something was not there. I then considered ministry. I wasn’t even going to church at the time, so I went, talked with the minister and all I met was encouragement.” He enrolled in the Centre for Christian Studies in Winnipeg, Manitoba to receive training to be a diaconal minister. Diaconal is broken down into three foundational areas: social justice, education and worship, and spiritual care.

“I could have stayed in BC, but I missed my friends and missed my home area where I grew up. I found myself wanting to be closer to Edmonton,” shared John. “Somebody from Camrose United Church, who had been vacationing there, told me there was an opening in Camrose. I couldn’t get it out of my head. I couldn’t stop thinking about Camrose, so I talked to Rev. Liz here. It felt good and things moved very quickly then. I felt called.” He was excited to move to Camrose and arrive with a clean slate, not knowing the concerns from the congregation. “I notice in the United Church there is some despair at where we are as opposed to where we have been. I don’t carry any of that with me because I wasn’t involved. I see a congregation with a lot of potential. Let go of what we don’t have anymore. At the end of the day, we have a building, we have property, we have people driven by values and morals, which is more powerful than driven by a paycheque. We have a decent size congregation here. I know they are not where they would like to be financially, but they are better off than a lot of places. Let’s look at what we have. We have education, social justice, healing, sup-

port and all of those things are rooted in the church.” John said the congregation is strong and things will work out over time. “Working on a ministerial team is something that drew me here. It is a new experience and was attractive. I know it doesn’t happen a lot, so it was an experience I wanted to have. I wanted to try something different.” John not only wants to help Camrose residents and congregation members, but also keep in mind world mission work. “If we are not doing something for the betterment of creation, then we lose the purpose. There is value in being in the community. I would challenge any congregation to stretch themselves to help everyone, otherwise we become a clubhouse that eventually gets smaller and smaller. That is not what we are called to do.” John compared the church to a fruit tree. “We need pruning, but we still need to decide what shape we should be. Our church is not going anywhere. The church I came from was a senior-oriented place. It is the same here. We have to think and inspire what we have and I see a lot of value here.”

A group of kindhearted Camrosians feel no one should be alone for Christmas, so have once again organized the free Community Christmas Party to be held on Dec. 25, Christmas day, from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Sparling School, 5216-52 Avenue. Organizers, consisting of Rick Passek, Tara Vanderwal, Renee Shupe and Jamie Hutchison hit the ground running again volunteering their own time to organize the event, collect donations and seek connectivity and assistance from other community groups. “This is the second year we have put together this event,” said co-organzier Passek. “Last year we had 76 people, from all aspects of our community including seniors, youth, families and Augustana students, come out and enjoy a family friendly event.” After finding out about the event last year, Camrose Police Service school resource officer and member of the Camrose and Area Risk Education (CARE) coalition Constable John Fernhout brought CARE on board to assist the Free Christmas Party organizing committee in any way they could. “We have been reaching out to the youth in our community by handing out CARE cards before Christmas and summer breaks from school,” said CARE coalition member Carol Breitkreutz. “The cards contain contact information on services available to youth, such as The Open Door, Kids Help Phone and Crisis text line, should they need assistance or just someone to talk to. We thought linking with the Free Christmas Party was a great way to make that connection in our community and be able to help them spread the word and hopefully encourage youth to bring their families or friends out to the party with them.”

Constable Fernhout added. “The hardest time for a lot of youth is whenever school is out. During school they are receiving all the support and security they need and have contact with role models. Their sense of safety is at school. “For a lot of youth they don’t get that at home for whatever reasons. We know the high risk behaviours happen right before Christmas time and right before school ends for summer break because youth know this is going to be stressful because school is their safe haven.” Const. Fernhout thought the Free Christmas Party event would be a wonderful opportunity to offer youth a place to go on Christmas day and be involved in activities, have some food and associate in a positive manner, with others in the community. “We sent a letter to all school principals in Camrose and attached the Free Christmas Party poster,” said Fernhout. “And thus far we have had some very positive feedback.” The principal of Sparling School, Richard Cowan was happy to come on board and offer the facility as this year’s location for the event. During the event attendees will enjoy a light lunch, treats, singing, board games and crafts and activities but most importantly, the company of others, especially on Christmas day, a highly anticipated day when many are celebrating with family and friends, but many others are alone. “It is nice to know that something we started is starting to have a snowball effect in the community,” said co-organizer Renee Shupe. “Other people are beginning to understand the value and importance of everybody having somewhere to be on Christmas day.” For more information visit the website at bit.ly/community-christmas-party to donate or volunteer contact the organizing committee via the Facebook page or by email at freechrismasparty@gmail.com.

The Camrose Kodiaks scored twice in the third period to force overtime and eventually a shootout against the Okotoks Oilers on Dec. 12. Okotoks scored once in each of the first two periods, but Camrose came back with tallies from Kyler Kupka and Dylan Williamson. Not only did the overtime fail to produce a winner, but it took six rounds of the shootout before Okotoks netted the winner. Goalie Roddy Ross turned away 35 of 37 shots, while his teammates recorded 20 shots. Williamson again scored in the third period, but this time it was the winner against the Whitecourt Wolverines, 3-2 on Dec. 8. The Kodiaks led 2-1 after 20 minutes with local boys Jacob Kendall and Lane Brockhoff collecting the markers. Goalie Griffin Bowerman stopped 30 of 32 shots he faced. Camrose fired 37 on the Wolverines’ cage. Camrose dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to the Grande Prairie Storm, Dec. 7. Erik Miller and Carson Welke gave the bears a 2-0 lead in the opening frame, but the Storm replied with two in the second. After a scoreless third and overtime, a shootout determined the outcome in the second round. Goalie Ross stopped 33 of 35 shots. Camrose counted 30 shots on goal. The Kodiaks host Drayton Valley in the next home game on Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. Camrose will hold a New Year’s Day game with Bonnyville providing the opposition at 4 p.m. The Kodiaks also host the Calgary Canucks on Jan. 5 and the Calgary Mustangs on Dec. 8 with 7 p.m. start times. Heron calls his Model T a daily driver By Murray Green

Dave Heron’s daily driver is different than most people’s regular mode of transportation. He drives a 1926 Model T Roadster Ford on a regular basis in the summer. “I bought it in Grande Prairie 22 years ago, where I was living at the time. I bought it already restored, but It needs to be done again. It needs to be stripped down, sanded and re-painted. I have a little rust to fix, but I haven’t done it yet because it is still a daily driver,” said Dave. The Model T is an automobile produced by Ford Motor Company from Oct. 1, 1908, to May 26, 1927. It is generally regarded as the first affordable automobile, the car that opened travel to the common middle-class American; some of this was because of Ford’s efficient fabrication, including assembly line production instead of individual hand crafting. “If it was painted and it would get scratched, I would cry really loud,” said Dave. “This way it doesn’t hurt as much. I want to have fun with the car.” Ford’s Model T was successful not only because it provided inexpensive transportation on a massive scale, but also because the car signified innovation for the rising middle class and became a powerful symbol

of America’s age of modernization. “The car was popular before my time, so I just liked it. I had a ride in my brother’s Model T and I thought it was pretty neat.

FUN FACTS

The 1926 Model T was the fourth version and almost the end of the line. The fifth generation was released later in 1926. Improvements had been made to the T, including an electrical system and starter in 1921, but it was still far behind other cars of the day. In 1927, the Model A was introduced and was such an improvement over the T that the Model T’s were soon found to be obsolete. Balloon tires became available in 1925. Balloon tires were closer in design to today’s tires, with steel wires reinforcing the tire bead, making lower pressure possible, typically 35 psi giving a softer ride. A design change in 1926 made the greatest difference in the appearance of the car. The hood was again enlarged, with the cowl panel no longer a compound curve and blended much more with the line of the hood. The distance between the firewall and the windshield was also increased significantly. This style is sometimes referred to as the high hood. The styling on the last generation was a preview for the following Model A, but the two models are visually quite different, as the body on the A was much wider and had curved doors as opposed to the flat doors on the T.

Soon after, this vehicle came available, so I bought it,” recalled Dave. “I bought this car restored at the time because by the time I scrounged all of the pieces together, worked on it and painted it, it would have cost me between $25,000 and $30,000. It would have been double the price. A 1926 Model T usually sold for around $350 and was the last full year the car sold. The 1927 model was only made until June. Henry Ford conceived a series of cars between the founding of the company in 1903 and the introduction the Model T. Ford named his first car the Model A and proceeded through the alphabet up through the Model T, 20 models in all. Not all the models went into production. The Model T was Ford’s first automobile mass-produced on moving assembly lines with completely interchangeable parts, marketed to the working class.

Dave enjoys going to car shows and seeing the old vehicles that bring back memories. Model T’s were easy to repair, but driving took a bit of getting used to, especially with the odd pedal

arrangement. The Model T did not have a modern service brake. The right foot pedal applied a band around a drum in the transmission, thus stopping the rear wheels from turning.

A break and enter was reported at the UFA warehouse in Bawlf sometime throughout the night. Police received numerous reports of mischief in the Round Hill area. This is currently under investigation. Camrose RCMP has been receiving complaints of telephone scams. Targeting seniors, unknown person(s) are calling and claiming to be with Revenue Canada, the RCMP and many other associations in an attempt to obtain money. If you have any information regarding any of the above mentioned incidents that may lead to an arrest, contact your local RCMP Detachment at 780-6723342 during business hours or Crime Stoppers Tips at 1-800-222-8477. A young offender was charged with sex assault. He received a five year firearms prohibition, 100 days secure custody, 50 open custody followed by 18 months probation. An adult male was charged with domestic assault. He received a 12 month Peace Bond. An adult male was charged with assault. He received a suspended sentence with a one year probation. He also received five year firearms prohibition.

Concerned neighbour gets sick man medical help Dec. 13

A male contacted Camrose Police to report that his intoxicated brother was threatening him. Police attended and the brother was arrested on outstanding warrants. The male, who was also on conditions not to consume alcohol, was charged with breaching his

condition and later released on a promise to appear. Dec. 12

Police attended a two vehicle collision on 68 Street in the 4700 Block. There were no injuries and a female driver was charged with driving too fast for the road conditions. Police arrested a male inside

a residence who had conditions not to have contact with two other people inside the home. The male was charged with breaching his conditions and released on a promise to appear. Dec. 11

A resident contacted police when the neighbour’s dog was observed outside for an extended

period of time, which was very unusual for the homeowner. After several knocks on the door police could hear a very faint voice from inside the home. Access was gained and the male who had a medical incident was lying on the floor unable to get up. EMS was contacted and the male was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital.

Check your battery before it gets cold By Murray Green

The average car battery only lasts between two and five years, but many factors affect the lifespan of a car battery. Don’t wait for severe cold temperatures to check your car battery this winter. Driving habits, climate and operating conditions affect a battery’s overall durability and vary with use. Batteries vary in quality, with the best ones generally having longer lives. Extremely cold weather makes it more difficult for the battery, as it slows down the chemical reactions taking place. Eventually, even the best battery will wear out as batteries lose their capacity over time. This means

that the battery is less able to recover after each use and may go completely flat, leaving you unable to operate your vehicle. It’s important to understand your battery and to know the most common signs that it needs to be replaced. Old batteries or loose battery cables can cause really big problems that make it appear that something complicated is wrong with your vehicle. Even experienced mechanics are sometimes stumped by a simple problem with a battery past its prime, until they realize they’ve ruled out all other potential problems. If your engine cranks, or turns over when you turn the key, but it won’t

start, the most likely problem is your battery. It might be your starter, but most of the time, it’s really your battery, even if the car is cranking fairly vigorously. Batteries last longer if the vehicle is used regularly. If you leave your car parked and undriven for extended periods of time, it will deteriorate more quickly. Poor terminal connections can prevent the battery from recharging and shorten its life. Other important parts of the electrical system that can damage the battery if not working correctly, include the starter motor and solenoid. Some auto repair facilities will check your battery’s strength

and connections as part of a regular service or oil change. Automotive batteries don’t last forever. If you notice your headlights dimming, or if it’s been more than three years since you got a new battery, or the car needs a jump-start, it might be time for a change. Changing a battery is a quick and easy job in most cars and vans and can be done with minimal tools. Look for sulfate buildup in the form of a white or blue residue around the terminal—removing this can sometimes solve issues with a faulty battery. This residue may indicate a bad seal around the battery terminals and

is leaking the acid out onto the terminals. Do not touch because it is often dried out sulfuric acid, which will begin to burn your skin. Verify that the battery has been given the chance to recharge properly, by driving constantly for 30 minutes (with minimal electrical usage). Check the alternator. Some cars also have a battery metre, with the engine running, the alternator usually maintains a charge close to 13.8–14.2 volts in a properly functioning charging system. The battery should have 12.4–12.8 volts with the engine off and with no accessory load.

End of Life navigator guides patients By Lori Larsen

For many people, death is a difficult topic to broach, much less face with a family member or friend, but it is an inevitable part of living. Camrose Primary Care Network now offers Camrose and area residents the Palliative and End of Life Care (PEOLC) Navigator Program, an extension of the Chronic Disease Management Program, that helps navigate patients and their families and caregivers through the many processes that come when facing these challenging times in life. The program began Oct. 1 and is handled by PEOLC navigator, Nicole Luft. Luft comes to the position with experience working for PCN as a medical office assistant (still part of her role), volunteering with the Hospice Society of Camrose, specifically the Grief Support Walking Group, and has a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education (Kinesiology and Sport Studies) from the University of Alberta Augustana Campus. “Volunteering with the Hospice peaked my interest in this line of work,” explained Luft. “As it turns out, this job just comes naturally for me. I find it very rewarding.” Luft’s gentle and inquisitive nature has proven to be a good fit for both the PCN and the patients and family being served through the PEOLC Navigator Program. She has conducted

a great deal of research and has spent many hours establishing a solid knowledge base on resources not only within Camrose, but in other centres as well that are available to patients and families. “I tell patients/families I am not the expert in the supports, but I am able to direct or guide them towards any supports they will need to access. And if I don’t know, I will find out.” The PEOLC program uses the navigator to assist patients and families in accessing health and community resources and ensure the best care possible for them, improve patients’ quality of life and relieve any pain and suffering, while aligning with patients’ values and care preferences. “It comes in as a referral source,” said Luft. “Which could be a self referral or referral through a physician, PCN, family member or caregiver, hospital, continuing care, community cancer, CHAPS or EMS.” After the referral, Luft will either meet with the patient/family members in person or conduct a consult over the telephone. “I go over some of the supports that are available, specifically the ones that are concerns for them right away.” During the initial contact, Luft refrains from identifying herself as a palliative and end of life care navigator in an effort to ease the patient’s mind. “I don’t want to scare them,” said Luft. T hroughout the

patient’s care, the navigator educates them on available supports and refers them appropriately. “I usually check in with them in a couple of weeks when it is convenient for them and around their appointments. Then I send a letter back to their physician, letting them know what was discussed and if there is anything they (physician) need to follow up with the patient.” Luft most recently has been working with cancer patients, but advises that the program is available to anybody with a life limiting illness. “It is important for referrals to come in early so we can get the resources they require in place before they actually need them.” Luft’s tenacity is a definite asset to her position. She prides herself in knowing everything she can about the available supports and resources for patients and families and makes a point of clearing any misconceptions there may be about services such as home care. “It is more than just personal care. It offers many other services.” She also commented on the continual support she and the program receives from all the staff and administration at the PCN. Camrose Police received a complaint of a suspicious male in the downtown area. The male was located inside an aban-

doned property and arrested for break and enter. The male was in possession of break in tools and items that he had stolen from the Emergency Clothing Depot.

The male was charged with break and enter, theft and possession of break in tools and released with a date to appear in court. A domestic violence investigation resulted in police locating a male and charging him with assault with a weapon, forcible confinement and uttering threats. The 26-year-old is in custody waiting on a bail hearing.

County water rates show small increase By Murray Green

Camrose County council established the rate for nonpotable water at the water dispensing stations at New Norway/Edberg, Bashaw, Kelsey and Hay Lakes at $2.50 per cubic metre and the consumption charge for temporary construction services established at $5 per

cubic metre. These reflect no change in the rates from 2018. It was also moved on Dec. 11 at regular council that Camrose County establish the 2019 Consumption charge for wastewater disposal at 50 per cent of the cost per metre cube of metered water consumption for those services in

the Hamlets of New Norway and Braim at $2.55 per cubic metre. This increase represents a five cent increase per cubic metre. Camrose County established the 2019 metered water consumption rate at $5.10, per cubic metre, for the communities including Braim, Ervick, New Norway,

Duhamel, Ohaton and Armena. The 2019 rate for potable water from County truck fills located at New Norway, Armena and Ohaton be set at $5.30 per cubic metre. This would be a blended rate applicable to all potable water systems throughout the County including

Braim, Ervick, New Norway, Duhamel. Ohaton and Armena. Round Hill and Kingman would not be effected by this rate as they are serviced by the Highway 14 Water Commission. This represents a 10 cent increase for metered water and a five cent increase for truck fill rates.

I like to make use of all the time with my children, which means we often have entertaining conversations while we are driving to school and activities. We have talked about if we were a superhero what our superpower would be (flying, being invisible, healing with a touch), if we could have any animal what would it be (dog, cheetah), and what is the best thing about being their ages (being able to run fast, being an older student in school, getting to play lots). Last week, we were talking about the best parts of Christmas. I was concerned that the answer would be presents, presents, presents. Instead, I noticed a common theme in their answers: everything involved the anticipation of Christmas, the build up. Presents are definitely exciting and were mentioned, but the part of Christmas that makes it magical is the count down, the waiting. They want to see where the Elf on the Shelf has moved to in the night. One morning, we discovered he had dressed a Jem doll up in a toilet paper wedding gown and gave her a little flower from the table centerpiece for their wedding (He appears to have a thing for red heads). One morning, he was nestled in one of the stockings under the tree, using a plush baby Jesus from our nativity scene as a pillow. Though so far, he seems to be having a hard time being as creative as last year, when he got stuck in the lid of the piano and left a note saying “Help! I’m stuck!” Or when he made snow angels on a cookie sheet filled with icing sugar. They want to visit with Santa and double check on his favourite kind of cookie so they know what to set out on Christmas Eve. They want to move the countdown to the next date. They want to eat all of the Christmas baking that we have been making and not eating (except for my husband. He has already emptied one cookie tin from the freezer). It was a miraculous transformation in our home the afternoon when we decorated. The kids stood back in the darkness, in the glow of the Christmas tree lights. It suddenly seemed real that Christmas was on its way. Before, it was just the start of winter and some snow was on the ground. Now suddenly, the countdown had begun. Everything seemed brighter, more alive, more special. Once the tree was up and the nativity scenes were set out, there was suddenly an excitement in the air that hadn’t been there before. After our chat in the van, I closed my eyes later that day (Do this with me if getting ready for Christmas has seemed overwhelming or stressful.). I erased all of the adult concerns. I erased the thinking about what foods to bring for special events. I erased the thinking of the last gift to buy, and the last wrapping to do. I erased the stress. Because as an adult, getting ready for Christmas comes with a certain amount of stress. Then I tried to picture Christmas like they do, like I once did. Santa is coming in the night. There are going to be amazing presents under the tree! We can play outside all day and not go to school. We get to play with our cousins. The children at our church will soon perform a song for and with the congregation. After we learned the song, it kept randomly popping into my head days afterwards. The words are, “Christ Child’s coming, oh yeah. Christ Child’s coming, oh yeah! Christ Child’s coming, Christ Child’s coming, Christ Child’s coming, oh yeah.” That’s the biggest anticipation, the best magic of Christmas. Christ Child’s coming, oh yeah.

This year’s annual Stuff an Ambulance event, held on Dec. 8, in the Camrose Safeway Parking Lot, resulted in some fuller shelves at the Camrose Neighbor Aid Centre-Food Bank. “We were able to collect 2068 pounds of food and $1,700 in donations for the Food Bank,” said orga-

nizer Camrose Primary Care paramedic Brandon Erickson. This time of year is especially troublesome for people who are in need of some extra help and Camrose and area residents stepped up to the plate once again to help make Christmas a little more joyous.

Back in July of this year, a pouring out of kindness began for Round Hill area family, Rebekah, Josh, Jaidan, Kai, Adleigh and Beckett Burnstad, in their journey to seek answers and medical support for Beckett who, in infancy, developed mysterious health concerns. Through the efforts of many, a campaign began to assist the family, both financially and through gifts in kindness, in getting Beckett on a road to wellness.

The Burnstads

Communities such as Round Hill and Camrose, along with businesses and individuals, initiated and came on board with events such as the Bottle Drive for Beckett to raise money initially for the purchase of an expensive wheelchair. A social media campaign took off like wildfire when employees at The Camrose Booster learned of a weekend bottle drive in the hamlet of Round Hill. The front cover of the July 24th edition of The Camrose Booster was devoted to the Burnstad’s story and it would seem that was a spark that lit the fire of generosity. Residents from all around Camrose and area donated their bottles; local businesses held special events to raise funds and Central Agencies of Camrose donated the entire cost (plus some) for the wheelchair. The journey, far from over, took a new path in August when the family headed to Vancouver for the beginning of Beckett’s laser therapy to treat Lyme disease. “Lyme isn’t easy to watch sometimes,” said Rebekah in a Beckett’s Healing Journey Facebook post. “Sometimes I get really angry and don’t understand “why?” Sometimes we understand that during this journey there are all parts to it–sad, happy, mad and laughter. We have our faith and it helps on all days.” In the middle of August, Josh, along with Jaidan and Kai, returned home to Alberta leaving Rebekah, Adleigh and Beckett in Vancouver to continue treatment that, by Rebekah’s accounts, were showing amazing results. Long trips to the clinic, one and a half hours, took their toll, so Rebekah posted on Facebook a query

if anyone knew of a place they could rent with room and kitchen in the Burnaby area. Brenda and Dale Campbell of Round Hill immediately contacted a family member in the Burnaby area whose mother recently passed away, leaving an empty house which soon became a temporary and very welcoming home for Rebekah, Adleigh and Beckett. Rebekah and the two children returned to Alberta (home) in late September for a month. Beckett continued his journey of healing, riding around on his brand new custom wheelchair that he endears with the title “Buddy”, celebrating Halloween like any happy-golucky two-year-old, but mostly reaping the benefits of a family whose love is powerful and endless. The support from the community continues as well. During Beckett’s (and Rebekah and Adleigh’s) absence), the father/ son team of Larry and Carter Burnstad designed, organized and then built a wheelchair ramp (with an “army” of friends and family) so Beckett could easily access his home from outside, but even more importantly be able to get outside on his own to enjoy the great outdoors like every child should. Funding for the ramp was made available through the generosity of community members and businesses, including Hauser Home Hardware of Camrose. “We had a few visitors join us on Monday, my husband’s birthday, to build a ramp so that Beckett can get in and out easily with the wheelchair; they call themselves “Beckett’s Army,” noted Rebekah in another post.

In November, Rebekah and Beckett returned to Vancouver for another phase of treatments. The pull to stay against the pull to go have been unbearable for the family, but they endured another period of time apart, all in the name of Beckett’s healing. “It’s what you do when you love,” said Adleigh. Pressing an elevator button, putting a cap back on something, picking up a toy or being able to return the squeeze of a warm hug all may seem like some-

thing so mundane to many, but to Beckett and his family and all who continue to follow his progress, it brings a world of joy. On Nov. 23, Beckett turned three and the progress he has made through the treatments and his own, now three-year-old tenacity, are remarkable. At this point in Beckett’s progress, Rebekah reports, “he has improved so much again. He is using his hands so much more, he is starting to use his feet to weight bear, his energy is through the roof and he is moving all over the place.” On Dec. 1, Rebekah, and Beckett said farewell again to the extended family, friends and incredible clinic staff in BC, as they once again left to return home to Alberta. After finding out about the Burgers and Brews for Beckett event sponsored by the Canadian Brewhouse; with all funds raised for Beckett’s battle, Rebekah was overcome with gratitude for all the wonderful support they have received from the communities. “How lucky is this little boy to have such support and this massive cheering squad from Camrose and area cheering him on. We are so lucky to live where we live and we are incredibly thankful to everyone.” As of most recently, the Burnstad’s wait to hear on possible hip surgery for Beckett that will give him the range of motion that he needs in his hips. “There is great hope that Beckett will walk,” said Rebekah. “It will take time and a lot of perseverance, but we as a family are up to the task. He is also starting to grip with his hands and that is huge in itself; he is headed in the right direction, getting stronger and stronger everyday.” Spending the month of the Christmas season with family, being close to those who mean the world to you and being in the comfort of your own home, is just another part of the healing process for this spectacular little boy, Beckett, and his incredibly dedicated family. Christopher and Jaymie Reinhart, their seven- year-old daughter Kenzington and son Kendall, almost four, love Christmas and it shows! This family is well-known for producing wondrous Christmas displays. Prior to moving to Camrose three years ago, the couple, who both teach at Our Lady of Mount Pleasant School, were well known for decorating their home and property, situated on a corner lot in the village of Bawlf. This family wins the 2018 Central Agencies Christmas Light Up contest, which is coordinated by the Camrose Booster. Judging took place on the evening of Thursday, December 13th. Inside their present home, a towering jack pine tree, personally selected and hand-cut from the forest at Swan Hills (a long standing family tradition), shows a decorator’s talented touch. Ornaments and tasteful décor adorn the interior of their home located at 508 Parkridge Close. When you drive into the crescent where the Reinhart family reside, you will most certainly be in awe. The property is instantly spell-binding with the glow of over 150 different decorative components. Christopher explains, “We’ve been really fortunate being able to buy many of our decorations at garage sales or stores at really great sale prices.” The color coordination, perfection in arranging displays and the incorporation of symbols that reflect keeping Christ in Christmas are brilliantly achieved. A quick overview of the property, or a careful study of the individual yard scenes, surrounds individuals of all age groups with the magical feeling of Christmas. Evelyn Vikse February 21, 1924 ~ December 8, 2018 Evelyn Vikse was born on February 21, 1924, to Jonas and Emelie Johnson on a farm north of Donalda. She was the youngest of six children. Evelyn passed away at the age of 94 on Saturday, December 8, 2018, in Camrose. Evelyn met and knew Donald Vikse from living in the same community. They dated and agreed to marry once he returned from the war. During those war years, she worked at an aircraft factory in Vancouver building planes bound for overseas. On November 23, 1944, Evelyn married Donald Vikse. They built their homestead east and north of Bethany Church. To this marriage, six children were born. Evelyn was active in the church community all of her years. She was a loving person with extreme patience and kindness to everyone. She loved coulee walks, always welcomed friends and family (often with a good cup of coffee), was known for her talented paintings and played a pretty good violin. Left to cherish her memory are her children Marilyn (Frank) Stackaruk, Sharon (Albert) McGovern, Dale Olson, Garfield (Marianne) Vikse, Curtis (Leanne) Vikse and Karla (Dale) Adam; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; and her sister Elmira Thiessen. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband Donald Vikse; granddaughter Heather Olson; son-in-law Afton Olson; sisters Hazel Harder and Alidia Harder; and brothers Lloyd Johnson and Bill Johnson. Norman Richard Radke April 16, 1931 ~ December 5, 2018 Norman Richard Radke of Bashaw, and formerly of Camrose and Donalda, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at the age of 87 years. Norman was born to August and Lydia (Madu) Radke on April 16, 1931, and he was the third of four children born to this family. He grew up on the family farm in the Big Timber District, which is east of Bashaw. After finishing grade eight, he went out into the working world. He worked first for local farmers and, in the winter of 1948-49, he worked at the Edwards Logging Camp west of Rocky Mountain House. In 1950, he started farming, first by renting his parent’s farm for a short time, and then renting another local farm. In 1948, Norman met Doris Collin, who was the new school teacher at Big Timber. The teacherage had been moved to the August Radke farm, so their meeting was more than chance. A friendship led to a romance, and they were married at Bethany Lutheran Church, Donalda on June 30, 1952. In 1954, Norman and Doris moved to the Hoffman farm north of Donalda, where they lived and farmed and raised their family of five children. In August 2008, they moved to Camrose. The move to Camrose was made with much hesitation, and both Norman and Doris left much of themselves behind on their farm and in the community that had been their home for many years. Following the death of Doris in 2016, Norman made his last move to Bashaw Meadows. Norman was baptized, confirmed and married in the Lutheran Church, and he and Doris and their family were members at Bethany Lutheran Church during all of the years that they lived at Donalda. Norman attended one term at Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute, Camrose, in the winter of 1951. Norman was a quiet man with a gentle faith. On the farm, Norman was the happiest when he was working with his cattle and with his horses. He enjoyed this part of farming very much, and he took pride in having a good herd of cattle. Each year for many years, he bought an unbroke horse in the fall, and part of his winter recreation was to break the horse to ride. Norman was a good horseman. In his younger years, he also enjoyed playing ball and curling. Driving through the Yorkshire Dales in England with Gloria and her family were treasured memories, but perhaps the best trips of all were the Sunday afternoon drives exploring the local countryside. Norman is survived by his children Dwayne (Lorraine), Melody (Dave), Wendy (Bruce), Gloria and Mark (Jane); as well as seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Doris (Roy) Malmo; his sisters-in-law Florence Johnson and Anna Collin; his brother-in-law Gene Jones; as well as many nieces and nephews and a large extended family. The family gives thanks for a life that was well lived, and a rich legacy of love and understanding and patience. A time for viewing was held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 13, 2018 from Burgar Memorial Chapel. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 14, 2018 from Bethany Lutheran Church, Donalda (north of Donalda on RR 184 TWP RD 430), with Rev. Garfield Vikse officiating. CARRIERS 2018 has been a great year and has seen a significant amount of changes. And once again I would like to thank our amazing carriers. For the second year running we have been awarded accreditation from the Flyer Distribution Standards Association and it couldn’t be done without your help! I am always proud to hear when our Publisher tells me what a fantastic job our carriers do at The Booster. The year has also brought us a number of new flyer customers, increasing the size of the packages we are delivering. The bundles are heavy, the flyers are many, and yet without complaint, we have continued to deliver to each home reliably and consistently. Fraudulent call centres dismantled in India By Murray Green

RCMP have confirmed with Indian authorities that an additional 16 fraudulent call centres have been dismantled since October. Your tips to police about fraud has made a difference. These fraudulent call centres were believed to be targeting Canadians by perpetrating Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) scam calls. This coordinated effort comes as a result of information provided to the Indian authorities by the RCMP with the support of the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC). “Prevention and awareness are very important when it comes to reducing these fraudulent calls. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and report the phone number and information to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre,” said Sergeant Guy-Paul Larocque, acting officer in charge, Canadian AntiFraud Centre. A total of 19 fraudulent call centres have been dismantled since this past September. This latest development is part of a broad and long standing international effort to address call centres that perpetuate fraud. This success has been a collaborative effort by the RCMP, the CAFC, Indian authorities and Five Eyes law enforcement partners. While more fraudulent call centres have been dismantled, the RCMP and the CAFC would like to remind Canadians that prevention and awareness continue to be important in reducing the victimization from these calls. They encourage anyone receiving a suspicious phone call to hang up and verify their information directly with the CRA at 1-800-9598281. “This success is clear evidence of our strong collaboration and continued support with the Indian authorities. We will continue to assess the tips and information provided to us by Canadians and we will work with our domestic and international partners to fight fraud and protect the economic integrity of Canadians,” said RCMP superintendent Peter Payne, director, financial crime.

The Camrose Merry Christmas Fund was started 53 years ago when a need was found to supply food hampers to less fortunate families within the community. Last year, the Camrose Merry Christmas Fund supplied 252 hampers to families. Donations can be made at the Royal Bank and at the Camrose Fire Depart-

In July of this year, I wrote about the problem of illegal immigrants crossing into Canada from the United States and I attributed this to the careless tweeting of the Prime Minister. In January 2016, Justin Trudeau causally sent out the message “#WelcomeToCanada.” I explained all the consequences of such negligence and the unfairness of queue-jumping in that column. On Dec. 10, the Parliamentary Budget Officer (PBO) revealed that this Liberal recklessness will, if left unaddressed, cost taxpayers $1.1 billion by 2020, not including the hundreds of millions of dollars incurred by the provinces. This figure also did not include the payments to eligible Quebeckers the Liberals announced just days after the PBO released his report, 96 per cent of the 35,000 illegal migrants who have crossed into this country did so at Roxham Road in Quebec. On Dec. 12, newly appointed Canadian Minister of Border Security, Bill Blair, announced payments of up to $25,000 for residents for the disturbances they endured from living on or near this entry point on the Canada-US border. While the ink was just drying on the PBO’s report, the Trudeau Liberals also once again rolled out the welcome mat and perhaps in doing so, abdicated even more control over who comes into Canada to stay. I say “perhaps” because we really don’t know for sure what the consequences will be of Canada signing the United Nations (UN) global pact on immigration. On Dec. 12, just one day after Canada signed, headlines such as that in the National Post read “End of sovereignty or meaningless agreement”? The Global Compact for Migration was the result of a 2016 UN declaration on refugees and migration, agreed to by all 193 UN member states. The statement was in response to unprecedented levels of worldwide migration. In 2017, the United States pulled out of the agreement along with a number of other countries, such as Australia, Hungary, Austria, Poland and many central and Eastern European states, following behind. Most of these countries cited concerns about the very real possibility of losing sovereign control over migration. The crux of our opposition to signing of this pact is the uncertainty and the secrecy surrounding it and that it removes decision making authority about Canada away from Canadians. The Liberal government has readily defended this pact despite the Conservatives highlighting many anticipated problems. Our diligence in raising these issues has promoted significant questions and concerns from Canadians across the country. Many unanswered questions remain. Why was the government not forthcoming about this agreement and why did they fail to consult Canadians? Why did they not permit Members of Parliament the opportunity to, on behalf of their constituents, debate the positives and negatives of Canada signing this document? What exactly does some of the language found in the compact such as “sensitizing and educating” journalists on how they should report about immigration mean? Does this mean journalists are being muzzled from saying anything negative on immigration? On Dec. 11, during debate on a Bill amending the Customs Act, I took the opportunity to reiterate some of the concerns being expressed by many Battle River-Crowfoot constituents. I read from an email that was sent to all Members of Parliament and Senators in which was written: “This agreement is the most destructive piece of literature I have ever read. It will be the end of our great country and the last nail in the coffin of free speech in Canada. This has been hidden on purpose and after I read this rambling straight jacket of so-called agreement, I understood why. Something so divisive, damaging and horrendous to the future of Canada and it citizens should have been on the front page of every newspaper and magazine in the country. If it wasn’t so sad, I would give a round of applause to our PM for hiding it so well. I am stunned that there was no vote for us to voice our objections and they were against signing Canada to it. The PM was voted to represent the people of this country, but more and more he decides what this country should look like.” Given how little Canadians and I currently know about the pact, I agree with the authors of this email: “Canada has had decades of peaceful and orderly immigration. Allowing our borders to be open and under the control of the UN and not our own government, is the death of our country. What is a country without a border to stop people that may do us harm? We should be the ones to say who, what and why people and things may cross into our country.”
