Here are several more good reasons to go ice fishing this winter: • You can drive right up to your favorite fishing hole. • You can watch the fish swim up to your bait and take it. • Sometimes, when you look through a clear piece of ice, it’s like standing on glass. • You can get pizza delivered to your fishing hut. • You’re surrounded by the friends who make up this temporary ice fishing village.

A few years back, Russ caught a 13 pound jackfish and one of his friends snagged a 17 pounder last year. What a great way to spend a weekend afternoon – out on the lake, leaving your cares and worries behind!

Edberg fire department currently in holding pattern By Murray Green

There is confusion in Edberg after calls for fire service were temporarily redirected to neighboring fire departments. “After over 10 months of trying to work with the previous chief, council voted unanimously to remove him from his position. The fire fighters, including the former chief, were given letters stating they were welcome to reapply to the fire department provided they supply the documentation required,” said Jacqueline Boden, the Deputy Mayor of Edberg. “Several of the former firefighters have already brought in the documentation required and we are currently in the process of recruiting new members. Anyone who would like to apply can contact the Edberg village office by email vledberg@syban. net. While we cannot make an official announcement at this time, we are working diligently at getting the department reestablished as soon as possible,” added Boden. “I met with the Village of Edberg administration as they were having some personnel issues with the Edberg Fire Department. They were asked to apply correctly and file necessary documents,” said County Protective Services manager Mike Kuzio. “They need to provide driver’s abstracts and paperwork that they haven’t had for years. The documents are required not only for the village, but for our agreements as well in order to operate our fire truck,” continued Kuzio. “It’s the Village of Edberg’s department and not ours. Right now, there are no members of the Edberg Fire Department, however, we have notified the four surrounding fire departments (Bashaw, Rosalind, New Norway and Ferintosh) and in the meantime they will be taking all calls within Edberg’s district,” explained Kuzio. A County fire truck is currently housed in the Edberg Fire Department building. “We are not moving the fire truck at this moment, but we will discuss it at a future date. Edberg wants to keep a fire department, so we will see if it proceeds and moves forward.” All Camrose County fire permits and other fire related inquiries can be directed to the County office.

In the Jan. 15 Country Booster Going the Distance on Investigations story on page 4, the point stated

On Jan. 21, at approximately 12 p.m. Killam RCMP responded to a two vehicle collision on Highway 13 and Range Road 125 that claimed the life of a 74-year-old male from Sedgewick. Recycling pilot tackles rural waste By Murray Green

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry is helping fund a three-year pilot program that will recycle agricultural plastics. The Alberta Beef Producers will use the $750,000 grant to coordinate the recycling program on behalf of the Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group–20 stakeholder organizations ranging from commodity associations and rural municipalities to retailers. The Alberta Agricultural Plastics Recycling Pilot Program is aimed at recycling grain bags and twine and researching markets for other agricultural plastics. “Making agriculture more efficient and environmentally sustainable is a win for everyone. Not only are we tackling the long-standing problem of wasted twine and agricultural plastics, we’re working with partners to find policy solutions that really work. This pilot program is shaping a move toward an environmentally sustainable future for our province,” said Oneil Carlier, Alberta Minister of Agriculture and Forestry. The pilot will determine the financial, logistics and operations of recycling agricultural plastics that could help inform a future policy solution to the issue. “The Alberta government’s commitment to the pilot program is a welcome announcement. The APRG will explore an onthe-ground assessment of ag plastics on the provincial landscape to support the environmentally sound end use of these materials,” said Al Kemmere, chairman, Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group. “We would like to thank the Alberta government for supporting the agricultural industry in our efforts to recycle

Dr. Mark Cloarec is pleased to announce the arrival of InMode, a state-of-the-art light, RF and laser solution for the treatment of Dry Eye Disease. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is the leading cause of evaporative dry eye disease. Meibomian glands secrete an oil called meibum. Meibum, water, and mucus form the three layers of the tear film; the fluid that keeps eyes moist. The oil helps prevent the water layer on the eye surface from drying out. Patients with MGD produce an abnormal meibum that is more sticky than the usual olive-oil-like secretion, and in some cases the glands can be partially clogged by a waxy build-up of thickened meibum, preventing oil secretion altogether. In either case, this causes tears to evaporate too quickly, leading to chronic dry eyes. These patients can also develop severe inflammation and bacterial overgrowth that exacerbates the problem. Most standard treatments have been only somewhat effective for patients with MGD, leading some to suggest the need for a multifaceted treatment approach. Enter InMode.

InMode combines Lumecca (IPL) and Forma (RF) to apply sufficient heat to the area beneath the eye to melt waxy deposits in the meibomian glands. Once the deposits have been returned to a more liquid state, the glands can be expressed to clear away the thickened meibum. This is a non-invasive treatment, and has been highly successful in alleviating chronic dry eyes.

Dr. Cloarec demonstrates the use of Lumecca as a treatment for Dry Eye Disease.

ward to the rollout of this much-needed initiative and appreciate the speedy response and support from the Alberta government,” said Neil Gorda, director, region four, Alberta Barley. A government study in

2012 revealed that around 50 per cent of agricultural producers were burning their agricultural plastics on-farm. Sending plastics to a landfill was also a common method of disposing of agricultural plastics.

Saskatchewan ran a pilot program from 2011 to 2017, and is now operating the first regulated recycling program in Canada for grain bags. Alberta’s pilot program includes both grain bags and twine.
