Who wouldn’t want to be in the warm sun of Greece with wonderful music and steamy romance? Or, if that’s not possible, here’s the next big thing and well within every budget – attending the Churchmice Players’ production of Mamma Mia! The energetic show, on stage at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Centre under the direction of director Dave McDougall, will be remembered as one of the local community group’s best productions in its long and accomplished history. The script is amazing and the level of amateur talent that has been assembled for this ABBA-inspired musical is extraordinary. Big crowds are expected for all eight shows. All cast members and volunteers in this Valentine’s season production have put forth hundreds of hours in order to present the very best in local entertainment. For more information, see the ad on page 18 of this issue.

The students, teachers and board members at Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord (Centre-Nord) and Battle River School Division may speak different languages, but they have the same focus on doing what’s best for students. That’s why the two local school divisions have pledged to work cooperatively to ensure students receive a quality educational experience. The two programs are operated by distinct school divisions, so if a person worked at both schools they would have two separate employment contracts. “Those kinds of cooperative ventures are definitely possible. We can also foresee opportunities for the two schools to host joint cultural events or other activities,” said Imogene Walsh, assistant superintendent of business for Battle River School Division, when asked about staff working together. BRSD has been providing bussing to students of the local Francophone school since it opened in 2014. Now, the two divisions are taking their partnership further by planning to share school space. Earlier this year, BRSD received funding to replace Chester Ronning School, a Camrose school serving students in Pre-K to Grade 5. Centre-Nord has also been seeking government approval for a school building in Camrose, in order to provide a suitable learning
environment for students seeking a Francophone education. Both groups can benefit by having a joint school development project. Capital projects, such as the construction of a new building, are not paid for by school divisions, but rather by the Alberta Government. A joint building project does not directly save either of the school jurisdictions money. But it saves tax payer dollars. It also reduces the use of land in the City, as well as duplication of construction. In the longer term, joint use of space should allow both groups to share costs for grounds and parking lot maintenance, which will be a direct savings. Replacement plans for Chester Ronning School are already in process and will move ahead on schedule. The timeline for the CentreNord addition has not yet been determined. When the two-phase project is complete, students will be able to share common spaces and the school yard, reducing the need to duplicate construction or find a new school site. Students and teachers will also have opportunities to build relationships with their new neighbours. “We’re delighted to plan for the future together,” said Battle River board chair Norm Erickson. “It makes economic sense, cuts down on duplication of space and allows all staff and students of both school divisions to have a state-of-
the-art facility in which to learn and work.” “Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord is excited by the opportunity to be part of this joint project,” said Centre-Nord board chair Nathalie Lachance. “Our board believes in reducing planning and future construction costs, while maximizing resources by having school communities work together. Commonly shared spaces will benefit both schools and the community of Camrose.” The building design has not yet been finalized, so they don’t know for sure exactly what spaces will be shared. Representatives of both school divisions will be involved in these conversations over the next few months. With the number of students at schools increasing, a solid plan for the future needs to be in place. “We learned, while building in Bawlf and Bashaw, that schools are designed and constructed differently than they used to be” said Walsh. “The concept now is to create a core area of the school that includes office, library, gym and other essential spaces, then add classrooms around that core. The goal is to make the school space as flexible as possible, so additional classroom spaces can be more easily added.” A recent example of that would be Sparling School, where they added a classroom to the north side of the building this fall, complete with its own heating and plumbing system.

Three athletes off to Canada Winter Games By Murray Green
Team Alberta wheelchair basketball players Bradon Doll, Jayna Doll (brother and sister) and Jamie Cole, all of Camrose, will be competing at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer from Feb. 14 to 23. “I’ve been playing wheelchair basketball for four years now. It is exciting to go the Winter Games because it happens only every four years. I’ve been preparing for this for a long time so it is a major event for me and all of the players,” said Jamie. “I first started playing because my boyfriend played. We practice twice a week in Edmonton and then on weekends we go to tournaments. They can be pretty much anywhere like Vancouver, Saskatoon, Calgary this year we went to Chicago, which was pretty cool,” said Jamie, a University of Alberta Augustana Campus student. “When we go for tournaments we are pretty competitive. We won four straight games in Vancouver this past weekend (Jan. 26 and 27) and we beat Saskatchewan, who is ranked number three. That gave us some confidence,” she explained.
Submitted Camrose athletes, from left to right, Bradon Doll, Jamie Cole and Jayna Doll have trained for four years to play wheelchair basketball in the Canadian Winter Games in Red Deer, Feb. 14 to 23.
“Teams from Quebec have won the last four Winter Games, so they are the favourite, even though we are ranked number one right now,” said Jamie. The seeding tournament for the Canadian Winter Games was last April. “We played in the
junior nationals and we came in first, so that is how Alberta was ranked ahead of rival Quebec.” Team Alberta has several squads with A, B junior and women’s teams. “I play for several teams. Our top team is a little different than other provinces
because we have mostly women on the team. That helps us because we can have a stronger team. Players are based on a point system, so teams have balanced line-ups.” Each team is comprised of 12 players. The Camrose players are on the same
team, but they don’t spend as much time off the court together as they would like. “Bradon and Jayna play a lot together on the first string because they have more experience. However, I’m usually Jayna’s sub, so I don’t play a lot with her. We practice and travel together, so it is good,” added Jamie. Playing with Team Alberta brings the best athletes from the province together. “It gives us more diversity and it brings all of the top coaches together, supporting us. We have been training hard for the four years leading up to the Winter Games. We report to coaches in our own gym to ensure all players are working on the same thing, even when we are not in the same place. Then when we play in tournaments we put everything together as a team.” Participating in the Canada Winter Games with a chance to medal is a special experience. “It means a lot because it is a four year cycle. That is a lot of years to build up for one week of competition. It’s terrifying to have that much build-up and it is less than a week away,” said Jamie.

Kodiaks shut out Saints, enter battle for playoff placement
By Murray Green
In one of the most important games of the season, the Camrose Kodiaks scored a goal in each period and goalie Griffin Bowerman made 30 saves to win 3-0 on Jan. 30. Lane Brockhoff, Cale Chaifoux and Carson Welke all provided special team tallies for all the offence the Kodiaks needed. Bowerman stopped everything he faced to record the shut out, his third of the season. He lowered his goals against average to 2.27 and raised his save percentage to .931 on the season. Camrose has two games with the Calgary Mustangs within a week, which could have a huge impact on the south division standings as the team heads down the stretch. The Mustangs and Kodiaks had identical records after 48 games. Each period was a different game when the Camrose Kodiaks lost to the Whitecourt Wolverines 5-3 on Jan. 27. Whitecourt led 3-0 after the opening period as they controlled the play. However, it was all Kodiaks in the middle frame as the bears clawed their way back into the contest with two goals from Jacob Kendall and a single marker from Brennan Davis to tie the game. The Wolverines regrouped in the third and
Calgary Mustangs on Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. The Kodiaks are at home on Feb. 15 against Brooks at 7 p.m. and against Olds on Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. The last two home games are on March 1 and 2 when Canmore is here for a two game series. Bear facts

Family spanning five generations By Lori Larsen
Four generations of family welcomed the fifth edition on Dec. 3, 2018 when baby Koda (Savage) was born. Currently residing in Rosehaven in Camrose, great-great-grandmother Melva Jornlin (nee Hillman) moved to the Dinant district, from the Uncas district (located just east of Ardrossan), in May 1936. Along with her first husband, the couple farmed in the district until 1964 after which time they sold the farm and moved to Camrose. “Melva worked at the SAAN Store and J. Lawrence’s in Camrose,” said Melva’s granddaughter Sharleen Savage. “She retired in 1976.” In the mid-1960s, Melva married her second husband and raised three children Arlene, Allen and Ardith.
Submitted Pictured left to right are great-grandmother Ardith Weiss, great-great-grandmother Melva Jornlin, grandmother Sharleen Savage, mother Jessica Savage and newly born son, Koda Savage.
“Melva just celebrated her 99th birthday on Jan. 22,” remarked Sharleen. Ardith Weiss (nee Rosland) married Phil Weiss and the couple moved to Tofield where they raised Sharleen, Shanyn and Shawn. She is predeceased by her son Shane. “Ardith worked at the Tofield Seniors’ Lodge in housekeeping for many years and retired in 2015.” Sharleen, currently living in Edmonton, raised her two children James and Jessica there and welcomes every opportunity she gets to visit with Jessica and newborn Koda who also reside in Edmonton. “Many summers were spent hanging out with grandma and grandpa and going camping and fishing,” recalled Sharleen of her times spent with grandmother Melva. “We are excited to continue our adventures with the new addition to the family.”

Staying financially fit By Lori Larsen
Preparing for the future should begin today. Understanding what type of lifestyle you want to live in your retirement will determine how you plan and save now and maintaining your financial fitness is every bit as important as keeping yourself in shape. Begin today by opening and making regular contributions to a registered savings plan (RSP) and or a tax free savings plan, which will help you plan for the retirement you want, your children’s education and in the event of illness or disability. Take time now to educate yourself and your children on financial fitness. Be aware of any types of benefits or credits you are eligible for and take advantage of any courses, train-
ing sessions or information offered by your organization or other sources. Always be realistic about how much you can afford to put into savings or retirement plans. Daily living expenses should be factored in prior to making commitments to long term savings, and having an emergency savings account for the present day is advised. Be wary of your credit at all times and learn to solve your financial concerns on a daily “today” basis to avoid bigger concerns that may be less manageable. Get professional financial advice, which you can often get free from your banking institution or with the Canada Revenue Agency. If you pay now you will be able to play later.
IT’S A NEW YEAR.

Black History Month By Murray Green
Black History Month is celebrated at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus this February. “I want to speak from my own academic discipline, which is culture anthropology,” said Augustana dean Allen Berger. Cultural anthropology is a branch of anthropology focused on the study of cultural variation among humans. It is in contrast to social anthropology, which perceives cultural variation as a subset of the anthropological constant. All humans have mixtures of skin colours, so there is no need for racism. “All of us have been conditioned to view the human race as separate and natural divisions within the human species. It has become clear that human populations are not ambiguously clearly demarked, biologically distinguished groups. Throughout history whenever different groups have come in contact that have
interbred, the continual sharing of genetic materials has maintained from melanin of all human kind and came from a single species. Physical variations in any given trait tend to occur gradually, rather than abruptly, over geographic areas. Skin colour varies from white in the north to dark in the tropical areas in the south,” explained Berger. Melanin, the skin’s brown pigment, is a natural sunscreen that protects tropical peoples from the many harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays. This delicate balancing act explains why the peoples that migrated to colder geographic zones with less sunlight developed lighter skin color. “These facts render any attempt to establish lines of division among biological populations, both arbitrary and subjective. Physical variations to the human species have no meaning except the social ones that we humans put on them.” Slavery was put on peo-
ple by conquering countries as a measure to create divisions. “People in the 19th Century used race to justify the institution of slavery. That magnified the differences. That established a rigid hierarchy of socially exclusive categories. It established that inequality was natural or God given,” added Berger. Race was used for dividing, ranking and controlling colonized people. “Race evolved as a world view, as a body to prejudge us that distorts our ideas of human differences and group behavior. Racial beliefs are myths,” said Berger. “We now understand that cultural behavior is learned, conditioned into infants at birth and always subject to modification. No human being is born with a built-in culture.” The racial view was assigned to create a lower status, while others had access to power and wealth. “The tragedy has been with policies and practic-
es that stemmed from a world view that succeeded all too well. Present day inequalities between so called racial groups are not because of their biological inheritance, but products of historical, contemporary, social, economic, educational and political circumstances,” shared Berger. “I believe that Black History Month is an opportunity for all of us to learn about the social, economic, educational and the political circumstances. It is also an opportunity to learn and celebrate the courageous women and men who have rebelled against and risen above these circumstances,” Berger said. “It is a time for all of us to examine our attitudes towards race.” Augustana professor Feisal Kirumira also shared his view of Black History Month. “There are many stories of difficulty and stories of delight. The term Black History is an insult, as people pointed out that history is not
black, white or any other colour. They argue that if the purpose is to uncover the struggles of black people during slavery, or the achievements of AfroAmerican peoples towards social justice and equality, then this is a human story, not black history,” said Kirumira. “It is undeniable that everyone, regardless of race or gender, is a human being. If you don’t see my blackness, you don’t see my struggle for my dignity and as such, you don’t see me at all. This is what Black History Month is about.” The month is a chance to reflect on injustice in the world. “Every February, Black History Month serves as an important opportunity to reflect on the contributions, sacrifices and legacy of Canadians who trace their heritage to Africa and the Caribbean,” said Jason Kenney, leader of the United Conservatives. Events planned at Augustana include a talk on Get Woke and Black Consciousness, Steve Biko, on Feb. 5; movie The Hare U Give Us (discussion on stereotypes and racism) on Feb. 8; Taste of Melanin and Healing Circle 2 p.m. on Feb. 11; You Don’t Get to Define Our Pain discussion at 1 p.m. on Feb. 14; movie Malcolm X and discussion on Feb. 19; Savage: Braid and Rap 1 p.m. on Feb. 21; talk on Martin Luther King at 11 a.m. on Feb. 26 and wraps up with We All See the Same Sun on March 1.

Okay, so I’m on the wrong side of the Great Divide. You know, the Digital Divide. There are two kinds of people in our culture: Those whose smartphones and digital devices are part of their DNA and Human dinosaurs, soon to be extinct. I’m in the soon-to-beextinct category. I’m giving it my best shot to come into this century. I may not like all of it, but I’m prepared to accept reality. I even appreciate some of the benefits of new technologies. However…in the past few weeks, I’ve tried to get help from four different online corporations. Microsoft was the granddaddy. I’d established by trial and error that the reason my newly-purchased computer plug-in device didn’t work had nothing to do with the device. It had to do with Microsoft settings. I went to “Microsoft help” pages and was introduced to a robot. I typed in my question. The robot made a suggestion–something I’d already done. The robot asked “Did this fix the problem?” I clicked “No.” The robot continued with about 15 more suggestions and me clicking no. Then, to my amazement, the robot typed something like, “Would you like help from a person?” “Yes!” The robot asked how I would like to communicate. I clicked “Phone.” An appointment was required. This was Thursday morning. The earliest available phone appointment was Sunday at 12:30 p.m. I don’t normally do work things on Sunday, but I grabbed the appointment. The automated system confirmed that at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, someone from Microsoft would phone my number. Sunday I was prepared, and at precisely 12:30 p.m.– nothing. Nobody phoned. I remembered that Microsoft headquarters is in Seattle, so maybe they meant 12:30 p.m. Pacific, which would be 1:30 p.m. our time. At 1:30 p.m. nobody phoned. Microsoft stood me up! But I still had the problem. Once again I went online and typed my problem into to a different “Microsoft help” site. The reply said, “You did not yet indicate what Microsoft-Tech Support should do to make this right.” I re-typed the problem and added, “I would like Microsoft Tech Support to tell me what settings I need to change.” The reply said, “You did not yet indicate what Microsoft-Tech Support should do to make this right.” (Yes, the same message.) Then I noticed the next box: “How you fixed the problem.” The message said (I’m not making this up), “We are waiting for you to fix the problem and share the solution with the rest of us customers.” It added helpfully, “7,356 others have a similar problem.” This wasn’t even a Microsoft site. It was frustrated customers trying to help each other. And then a miracle happened. In frustration, I wandered off to do something else, but couldn’t stop thinking about the problem. One thing occurred to me that I hadn’t thought of before. I returned to my computer, changed one setting and the device worked! Great joy in heaven, or at least in my office. I’ve been thinking about why this experience (plus three others with online corporations) bothered me so much. Partly it’s because I feel helpless and powerless. But it’s more than that. It’s de-humanizing. For these corporations, I’m not a person. I’m not even a client or a customer. I’m a “user,” a nuisance, a commodity. Commodities can be bought, sold and traded. I know because I’ve been one of thousands of customers sold to the buyer of a financial institution I liked. Commodities can be treated with contempt and disdain–as we were by the corporation that bought us. I had a creepy feeling reading quotes from Oilers management representatives talking about “assets” and “deficits” when they meant human players–who can be bought, sold and traded as commodities. I don’t think Microsoft or any company deliberately sets out to de-humanize. Automating to eliminate direct user contact and the need for human staff is “just good business.” For them, maybe. But I’d rather be a person. ***
I’d love to hear from you. If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

Main Street residential request By Lori Larsen
Tish Olsen, downtown business owner (Tish’s Fashions and Finery) of 20 years, made application with the City of Camrose planning department on Nov. 22, 2018 to amend LUB 2929-17, specifically Section 15.1.5(d), so that dwelling units may be permitted on the ground floor of structures that are in the C-1 Central/Downtown Land Use District adjacent to Main Street. The proposed dwelling unit would be located at 4895/4887 Main Street. Of the 3,442.25 square feet total interior area of the building, the proposed dwelling unit would consist of 880.46 square feet, representing 25.57 per cent of the gross
floor area of the building. The entrance to the proposed dwelling unit would be to the rear of the building. Tish would like to convert the back part of her Main Street business to accommodate a living quarters for herself. “What we are asking for is approximately 600 square feet of our space that can be made into a living area that I can live in, maintain and keep the integrity of the building.” Presently Tish is maintaining two residences. “It is hard for me as a single person to take care of everything, yard work, snow removal, utilities, taxes. It just makes sense to me that at this point in my life, coming closer to retirement, that I could downsize and have a landing spot.” With the hopes of eventually turning over her downtown business operations to daughter Olivia, Tish says having her residence in the back of the store would also allow her to continue being an integral part of the business. “It’s a heart thing,” she said, indicating that her customers are more than just customers and that for 20 years, she has prided herself in being an important part of downtown business. Olivia remarked, “If the City doesn’t budge and work with us, the upcoming generations will not want to take over once all these business owners retire and the downtown business will die.”

Oliva also noted that having owners living at their businesses creates another degree of security and safety within the downtown area. “Downtown businesses bring a lot of economic profit to Camrose,” said Olivia. “With us, 90 per cent of our clientele is from out of town. All of our businesses draw a lot of money into Camrose. “All we want is a fair playing field,” continued Olivia, referring to other businesses in downtown (specifically Main Street) that gain from being able to use the second floor for residential use. “Because we chose to buy a building without a second floor, we can’t gain from that.” Tish concluded, “We have the utmost faith and confidence in our mayor and council to encourage landowners to foster cooperation with a level playing field in this depressed economy. It is all about cooperation rather than dissention.” The matter went before council at the regular meeting held on Dec. 17, with administration recommending that council not give first reading to bylaw 3022-18 to amend Land Use Bylaw 2929-17. The matter was postponed until Jan. 21, when it came back before council during the committee of the whole meeting for discussion on administration’s proposed options for council’s consideration.

In response to a previous letter. The Yellow Vest are not against legal, vetted immigrations, we are against, illegal, unvetted migration. We are not racists or white supremacists. We have people of all races and ethnicities as well as all religions in our group. A large number of our members are recent immigrants who came to Canada through the proper channels. We are against the UN Compact. We are against the carbon tax. We are for pipelines and for lower taxes. We are for taking care of our veterans, elderly and homeless. I’m sorry that people are believing all the lies that the liberal media is and has told about us. We rally every Saturday and we collect food donations and warm winter items for our local homeless. We are a God fearing, loving group of people who have been vilified by the media who have been paid $600,000 by the government to tell lies about us. The government knows we are telling the truth and they don’t want the Canadian people to know the truth. I’m a 61-year-old woman. I am a mom and grandmother. I am fighting for my children and grandchildren so they will never be ruled by the UN. We are fighting for Canada to stay Canada. A country built by immigrants. A country that enjoys freedom of speech. A country that enjoys freedom of religion. A country that believes every Canadian citizen has a right to live in peace. We are fighting for Canada, we are fighting for every Canadian citizen, no matter your race, religious beliefs or age. Carol Vance, Camrose Racism
A past letter (Jan. 22)
claims to have been horrified to see protestors (wearing yellow vests) who do not buy into her socialist globalism (communism by other names). Horror of horrors, there are those who want pipelines built, who want to scrap useless carbon taxes, who don’t want open borders for anyone and everyone to just wander in, and in general desire and work for a prosperous economy with low taxes. How awful such ideas are to those who essentially want to destroy our state and indeed all nation states: surely any citizens wanting to defend our borders must be attacked. So we get the usual leftist “arguments,” her gratuitous and false namecalling, thrown at those who don’t buy the UN agenda, including its latest rules to facilitate world migration. Falsely characterizing the protestors as haters, racists, bigots, misogynic, and horror of horrors, anti-immigration. How awful it is that many people do not want the open-borders agenda, do not want foreigners with, in some cases, very different customs (that they sometimes even want to establish in our laws) over-running our well established and formerly well-run country. How awful. But consider the hypocrisy, when those of her ideology and their Indian pals are first to criticize and attack the original migrants who discovered our country, denouncing them and their descendants as “settlers.” Of course they are “ill-informed,” those yellow vests, those not buying her message. She tells us we in Camrose have a “large faith community whose values include ‘brotherly love’ and tolerance,” even welcoming Syrian refugees. And that
there are lots of immigrants employed around and about including students at our local university, as though all that is somehow automatically a good thing. In the end she smears with the spurious, “Make racism wrong again” (Surely it was never right). As though those opposing her throw-away view of the country were somehow racists. There is nothing racist in opposing an increasingly thick and sick piling people into our country, especially the big cities, with criminals and all the needs that the millions include. It is nothing about race when all immigration is opposed, including a call for less not more. What is truly sick is her labeling messages opposing her one-world view as “ugly” and “sickening.” Douglas Hendrickson, Bittern Lake

Hunting fines
I saw in a past Camrose Booster an article describing a court case in Canmore about how two Camrosians paid a hefty fine. They were charged for transporting guns and Bighorn sheep carcasses through a national park, also the forfeiture of the two Bighorn rams. They obviously had licenses for what they shot and they were using a public road, what are people to do? Hire a helicopter to take them out or go the long way around through Jasper to come home? I do not see the justification of these fines. Bernie von Tettenborn, Round Hill

Good concert By Murray Green
Matthew Good is one of Canada’s preeminent voices in music. His voice will be heard in Camrose during a solo acoustic performance at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. “Matthew Good has been producing great Canadian rock music in Canada for more than 20 years,” said Lougheed Centre manager Nick Beach. “He has nearly one million records in Canada alone. During the late ‘90s and early 2000s, I can’t think of a bigger rock band in Canada.” In 1995, Good formed a three-piece rock band composed of himself, drummer Ian Browne and bassist Geoff Lloyd. Dave Genn originally only recorded with the band as a paid session musician. Beautiful Midnight is the third album released by the Matthew Good Band. It is the band’s most commercially successful album. The album became successful via singles including “Hello Time Bomb,” “Load Me Up” and “Strange Days.” The album earned them two Juno awards in 2000, for Best Group and Best Rock Album. Beautiful Midnight became the band’s best-selling album, being certified double platinum in Canada and selling over 300,000 copies by 2016. Good released his solo debut Avalanche in 2003. The album featured major stylistic differences from those recorded with the previous band. The album featured the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on several tracks, including the first two singles, “Weapon” and “In a World Called Catastrophe.” Good’s second solo album, White Light Rock & Roll Review, was released on June 15, 2004. Singles included “Alert Status Red” and “It’s Been a While Since I Was Your Man.” A compilation of Good’s work with the Matthew Good Band as well as his solo material was released in September 2005, titled In a Coma: Matthew Good 1995–2005. The first single from the album, “Oh Be Joyful” was released at the end of July. In March 2006, Good embarked on a solo acoustic tour of Canada, which featured smaller crowds and more intimate settings. He is doing this again for his Camrose show.

Goodvin returns to play at Lougheed Centre By Murray Green
Aaron Goodvin is no stranger to Camrose. But unless you caught his music act at the Big Valley Jamboree on Saturday, Aug. 4, you may not know just how good of a performer he really is. For those of you who missed his performance, or better yet enjoyed it, you are in luck to see him again.
Aaron will be playing at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. One of the benefits of growing up in a small town is learning to make your own entertainment. For Aaron, from Spirit River, that meant joining his fam-
ily around the campfire for sing-alongs. At 12 years old, Aaron entered a singing contest at a local mall. Once he heard the crowd’s applause, he knew performing was what he wanted to do. He learned to play guitar and started writing his own material and by 18, he was contrib-
uting songwriting cuts to other artists. Over the years, Aaron built a local reputation as a dynamic performer with a rock solid portfolio of songs. He began making trips to Nashville to test the waters in country music’s Mecca. After signing with publishing powerhouse Warner Chappell Music, Aar-
on scored his first majorleague contribution on the track “Out Like That” on Luke Bryan’s multi-platinum album Crash My Party. Aaron continued to develop as a performer and eventually caught the attention of Johnny Reid. “I told Johnny that I just wanted to share my music with an audience,” said Aaron.

Patricia Loesch June 14, 1936 ~ January 26, 2019 Patricia Christine was born to John and Marie Niehaus at Strome, Alberta on June 14, 1936 and passed away peacefully at Daysland Hospital on January 26, 2019, with her family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. Patricia married Dennis Loesch on July 4, 1956 and together they were blessed with eight children: Karen, Kathy (Bill) McLennan, David, Betty (Darrell) Laidlaw, Audrey (Doug) Buchholz, Robert, Jeffrey (Krista), Leslie (Dale) Heck. They were also blessed with fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Patricia will be remembered for her fierce love of her husband Dennis, her family and her faith. Dennis and Patricia raised their family while farming for fortyfive years; she worked hard as a farm wife and mother; she had a creative soul and a vast array of talents; she loved gardening, cooking, sewing, crocheting, volunteering in the community and church and sharing her love of music. Her passion for music began as a child while playing piano accompanied by her father on the violin, who insisted she learn to play by ear. As a young adult, she spent many a Saturday night playing in a band called the Rhythm Rascals; she played with the band on and off well into her married life. For years, she played piano and organ in church and, more recently, at Providence Place, Daysland Sunbeam Center, the hospital and her greatest joy – singsongs with her family. Patricia devoted 25 years as Our Lady of the Prairies Church Sacristan. This was a labour of love in which she took great pride: preparing the altars and watering the plants as if they were her own. She always said this ministry strengthened her faith because this was where she did her best praying. Patricia was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and friend; she will be greatly missed by everyone’s lives whom she touched. Patricia faced her cancer journey with courage and hope. We will remember her grace, beautiful smile and bright blue eyes right up until the time our Lord and Savior called her safely home. We wish to thank everyone for the comfort, support and acts of kindness shown to our family during this sad time. If you so desire, memorial donations may be made to Centra Cam Vocational Training Association, to honor Karen. A prayer vigil was held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 1, 2019 from Our Lady of the Prairies Roman Catholic Church, Daysland. A funeral mass was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2019 from Our Lady of the Prairies Roman Catholic Church with Father Carlos Nunez as celebrant. The automotive section of
Francoeur’s Fargo was beautifully modified By Murray Green
Camrose resident Maurice Francoeur was looking for a hobby when he came upon a 1946 Fargo truck. The rest they say is history. “I bought this truck to fix as a hobby. I can’t remember when, but it was a long time ago. I did everything myself except the paint. I dissembled the whole thing. I took the old frame and threw it away. The cab was good, the front end was relatively good, but the previous owner made a grain truck out of it,” explained Maurice. “It was a heavy duty truck, I think a one ton. It had a nine foot bed on it and it was slipped back about eight inches so it could have a hydraulic jack in there (between the cab and box),” Maurice said. “They made a dump truck out of it. In order to make it all work they cut the fenders.” Maurice wanted to save the truck from the junk yard. “It was a lot of work, but the cab was really good. It belonged to a couple of guys who owned a Red Robin franchise in Edmonton and they were going to use it in the store as a feature,” recalled Maurice. “When I bought it from them they had one of the bed panels that was the correct size, so that came with it.” The thought of driving an old dump truck around Camrose didn’t appeal to him. He knew right away that changes had to be made. “I took it all apart and shortened it up. It now has a 1988 Dodge Dakota chassis (shortened eight inches). The backs are higher on those, so I also lowered it five inches,” said Maurice. “I added cab mounts three inches above the frame to level everything off.”
FARGO SHORTENED
Murray Green, Camrose Booster Maurice Francoeur of Camrose took a one-ton dump truck and turned it into a thing of beauty with his restoration of this 1946 Fargo. It may have taken him about 15 years to rebuild, but the time was worth it with this show piece.
He started restoring the vehicle about 18 or 19 years ago and it took about 15 years to complete at his own pace. Some days were all day working on it, others were 10 minutes. “It had an original flathead six cylinder motor with a four speed transmission. I never started it because I didn’t want to drive it as is. The suspension was ridiculously powerful. I decided not to waste time and money on trying to get it to run.” Some guy from Calgary paid $20 for the pieces he didn’t want and hauled them away. “It now has a 360 engine and automatic transmission from a Dodge G150 van and the differ-
FUN FACTS
The first Fargo trucks were built in Pilsen, Chicago by the Fargo Motor Car Company from 1913 until 1922. In 1928, Chrysler bought the business and created their own line of Fargo trucks. Shortly after its creation, Chrysler also bought the Dodge Brothers Company, adding Dodge and Graham Brothers badged trucks to its product line. U.S. sales of Fargo trucks were discontinued in the 1930s, but in Canada the name Fargo was used until 1972 for marketing reasons to differentiate the trucks as Chrysler-Plymouth dealer offerings apart from the Dodge trucks sold at Dodge dealers.
ential is from the original Dakota. I haven’t done anything to the engine because it has way more power than I need for the light weight truck. My idea was to build it the way I would have if I was a teenager with no money,” laughed Maurice. “I grabbed parts from where I could.” It has some modern conveniences such as power steering, locks, windows, cruise control and a heater. Most of the working interior parts are also from the Dakota. “The only things I bought new were the windshield operating mechanism and a small actuator that opens and closes the cowl. I wanted to keep the parts as much Mopar as I possibly could.” Every young man wants to own a truck. Maurice was no different, he just waited a little longer. “I just had in my mind that I wanted to fix an older truck that had separate lights and not built into the fenders. My brother that lives in Edmonton had spotted this truck at an autobody shop. The story was that the body shop was
going out of business and the economy had crunched. The Red Robin owners postponed opening a store, but the body shop wanted to get rid of the truck. So I ended up with it.” The thing he didn’t want to tackle was painting. “I picked out the colour that could have been used back
then. It is a mix of Nissan orange and Chrysler lava.” Excluding winter, the truck can be seen around town during coffee break hours. “I also enjoy driving it around town, in parades and at car shows.”

Tips to keep your vehicle secure By Lori Larsen
Imagine that your vehicle can be stolen by a professional car thief in as little as 30 seconds, without having access to the keys. Also imagine that it takes only a few seconds and in some instances, no time, to go the extra mile in protecting your vehicle. The following easy steps will help you guard against losing your hard earned vehicle to theft. Always keep your windows rolled up and doors locked. No matter how cold it gets, never leave your vehicle unattended while it is running. Do not leave your keys in your vehicle in plain sight or easily accessible. Do not leave valuables, loose change or packages in full view, lock them in a trunk or tuck them out of sight. If you have a garage, park your vehicle inside and lock all points of ingress and egress to your garage. It is also wise to lock your vehicle, even if it is parked in your garage. It provides one more line of defence.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Camrose RCMP Constable Robert Luz demonstrates the use of anti-theft screws on vehicle license plates.
If you are parking your vehicle outside, do so in a well lit area and consider installing motion sensor lights, and when parking in parking lots at public or private locations, look around and be aware of your surroundings and any suspicious behaviour. Keep your vehicle registration and proof of insurance on you at all times.
Remember if you do change out wallets or handbags, ensure these documents are moved over as well. Consider purchasing anti-theft devices such as a steering wheel club or alarm system. While they are not fool-proof, they do deter thieves and secure anti-theft screws on your vehicle license plates.

Bull Congress beefs up the competition
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster The Canadian Bull Congress held on Jan. 25 and 26 at the Camrose Regional Exhibition brought out the best of the best in the cattle industry. Photos clockwise: Beautiful bulls filled the CRE from farms all over Alberta and other provinces. Vikse Family Farms were well represented with this two-year-old, 2,500 pound Charolais, Quick Start, shown by Hussar 4-H member Sydney Edwards with Dave Vikse assisting. The school program gave students like Grade 4 student Chevy Masson from Bawlf School, an opportunity to learn a little about the art of auctioneering with auctioneer Ron Peterson, right, at the microphone. Lexi Dietrich received grand champion title with her heifer in the show ring on Jan. 25. Armena 4-H Beef club member Lyndsey Smith prepares her one-year-old heifer, Harvie Ms Firefly, with a good grooming prior to heading to the show ring.
