As usual, the City of Camrose has been proactive in clearing main traffic routes and side streets as well, of winter's white stuff, plus salt and sand laid down for traction. Keeping streets bladed and having snow hauled to dump sites makes for more friendly and safer seasonal driving. However, the task of clearing provides immeasurable benefit in a couple of additional important ways. Prudent snow removal means the chances of flooding from a quick spring thaw are greatly reduced. Equally important is that timely snow removal actually extends the life of all paved roadways. In the weeks of spring, daytime temperatures typically mean melting which takes place on the dark-colored pavement. Water seeping down into cracks or pavement imperfections then freezes at night meaning cracks open further; pavement then heaves or potholes develop. While numbers have not been tabulated for this year’s removal program, during the 2017/18 season, the City moved over 60,000 cubic yards (5,000 tandem truckloads) of snow from City streets. A private firm was contracted for a similar amount.

RCMP truck rammed by suspect By Lori Larsen

Delta Flight 15

On Sept. 11, 2001, 38 planes landed unexpectedly in Gander, Newfoundland, carrying almost as many people as the entire population of Gander. They stayed two days. I was deeply moved by this story, written by a flight attendant on Delta Flight 15 whose plane landed in Gander that day. The story begins with the flight crew getting the message they have to find someplace to land. Here are excerpts about what happened after they left Gander.

Camrose RCMP received a complaint from a Camrose County resident regarding a suspicious vehicle in a rural Camrose area on March 4. Camrose members were dispatched to the area to investigate information provided to the RCMP, by the complainant, that included a description of the suspect vehicle and partial

the operator of the stolen vehicle, for committing an assault on a police officer by ramming the police vehicle with the suspect vehicle. The pursuit continued out onto Highway 21 and upon observation by the RCMP members of erratic and dangerous driving of the operator of the stolen vehicle, a decision was made to discontinue the

times. These situations are highly volatile and unpredictable and the people who called in the complaints were very cautious in what they did. They didn’t interact with anyone, they safely took down the information and passed it on to us to deal with and we are thankful to both the complainants for being so aware of what was going on, obtaining

“…Back on the plane, we were reunited with the passengers and found out what they had been doing for the past two days… What we found out was incredible. “Gander and all the surrounding communities (within about a 75 Kilometer radius) had closed all high schools, meeting halls, lodges, and any other large gathering places. They converted all these facilities to lodging areas for all the stranded travelers… “All the high school students were required to volunteer their time to take care of the ‘guests.’ Our 218 passengers ended up in a town called Lewisporte, about 45 kilometers from Gander where they were put up in a high school… “Phone calls and e-mails to the U.S. and around the world were available to everyone once a day. During the day, passengers were offered “Excursion” trips… “Food was prepared by all the residents and brought to the schools. People were driven to restaurants of their choice and offered wonderful meals. Everyone was given tokens for local laundromats to wash their clothes, since luggage was still on the aircraft. In other words, every single need was met for those stranded travelers. “Passengers were crying while telling us these stories... “It was absolutely incredible. When passengers came on board, it was like they had been on a cruise. “Everyone knew each other by name. They were swapping stories… [about] who had the better time. Our flight back to Atlanta looked like a chartered party flight…. Passengers had totally bonded and were calling each other by their first names, exchanging phone numbers, addresses, and email addresses. “And then a very unusual thing happened. “One of our passengers approached me and asked if he could make an announcement over the PA system… He reminded everyone about what they had just gone through... He reminded them of the hospitality they had received at the hands of total strangers. He continued by saying that he would like to do something in return for the good folks of Lewisporte. “He said he was going to set up a Trust Fund under the name of DELTA 15 (our flight number). The purpose of the trust fund is to provide college scholarships for the high school students of Lewisporte. He asked for donations of any amount from his fellow travelers. When the paper with donations got back to us with the amounts, names, phone numbers and addresses, the total was for more than $14,000! “The gentleman, an MD from Virginia, promised to match the donations and to start the administrative work on the scholarship. He also said that he would forward this proposal to Delta Corporate and ask them to donate as well. “As I write this account, the trust fund is at more than $1.5 million and has assisted 134 students in college education. “I just wanted to share this story because we need good stories right now. It gives me a little bit of hope to know that some people in a faraway place were kind to some strangers who literally dropped in on them. “It reminds me how much good there is in the world. “In spite of all the rotten things we see going on in today’s world this story confirms that there are still a lot of good people in the world and when things get bad, they will come forward. “This is one of those stories that needs to be shared. Please do so.” ***

Messiah Lutheran Church of Camrose invites residents to a grief workshop to be held on Saturday, March 23 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the church, located at 4810-50 Street, featuring speaker Rick Bergh who uses narrative therapy practices to support those who are grieving. Messiah Lutheran Church of Camrose pastor, Bev Swanson spoke of the importance of sharing the journey of grief with others. “The hearing and holding of our stories together is perhaps one of the most healing things we can do with one another. That is perhaps why narrative therapy is such a powerful tool to move people to healing. As we share our stories with one another, we are also reminded that we are not alone in our journey through grieving moments.” Bergh is a Thanatologist (CT), Narrative Therapist (NT), ordained minister, speaker and best selling author. His wisdom on the topic of grief is much more than theoretical, as he draws his information from his own personal experience. After losing his (first) wife Pam to ovarian cancer, Bergh relied on the principles he shares to guide him, as well as his four children, through the process of grieving. “Narrative Therapy allows us to ask deeper questions about our identity and our personal narrative,” explains Bergh. “As such, we begin to examine our purpose, meaning, identity, and even our spirituality.” Bergh f u r t her explained that narrative therapy is highly effective in helping those who have lost a loved one. “It allows them to rediscover their most significant stories with their loved one and pen them into their next chapter moving forward. In his presentation Bergh will share with attendees the value of a narrative approach to grief and mourning. “It seeks to help people ‘expand the landscape’ to include their most valuable stories of ongoing connection and love with the person who has died. It invites re-connection through the process of re-membering– bringing their loved one close through the power of story. “Can my loved one, who has died, still be part of who I am in the future?” The answer is “yes”– through story.” Lunch will be provided during the workshop. Designer babies—a new twist in an old story

Can science finally produce super humans? The wish to improve the genetic quality of our species is older than our knowledge of the genetics. An old story tells us of the Spartans, who would examine newborns, especially young males destined for military service, and let any found with imperfections die of exposure. A scientific term for a type of eugenics is “preimplantation genetic diagnosis” or PGD. During the in vitro fertilization procedure, embryos are screened before implantation in the uterus. This is not far from the Spartan tradition, except it occurs during the early development of a human embryo. In China, in November of 2018, twin baby girls, Lulu and Nana, were the first humans to be genetically edited using CRISPR CAS 9 technology. While gene therapy (a procedure of replacing mutated genes with healthy in human tissues) has existed since the 1980s, this is the first known case in which new technology was used on human beings to target and alter a healthy gene with the goal of improving human beings beyond our natural genetic makeup. This research was announced at a scientific conference in Hong Kong last November, by Chinese researcher Dr. Jiankui He. He conducted this research in secret, outside of the university, with a group of volunteer parents. The germline genome of the future babies was edited, meaning that a particular DNA sequence was precisely deleted, so that babies do not have a functional CCR5 gene. Protein coded by this gene is an entry point for HIV infection, so Dr. He’s goal was to produce genetically modified humans resistant to HIV infection. The condition to participate in Dr. He’s experiment was that a prospective father had to test HIV positive while mother tested HIV negative. Prior to the implantation of early embryos in the uterus, Dr. He performed PGD to see if the genetic change was successfully introduced. His research has not been published in any peer-reviewed journal, although it has been confirmed by the World Health Organization that the babies Lulu and Nana have indeed been genetically modified. The fact that the procedure was performed on their embryonic stem cells means that the condition is going to be inherited by the future offspring of Lulu and Nana, marking the possible point of a new and altered human population. This development will lead to many ethical debates about the role and purpose of human genetic modification. I would like to share a few of my concerns. First, if scientists are not required to express their ethical opinion about the ethical questions of research, we cannot expect them to be ethically responsible. Second, CRISPR CAS 9 technology was developed in the western world and is in broad experimental use by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) who are responsible for the development of emerging technologies for use by the US military. We need to consider their motivations. Finally, the general population does not have any democratic say or role in the decision making when any new technology is about to affect humankind. Unfortunately, the general population, who typically places its trust in the benevolence of scientific progress, is entitled only to deal with the consequences. These issues will be discussed further at a Lunch and Learn on “Designer Babies and Genetic Engineering: Good or Evil?” with Dr. Tom Terzin and Dr. Janet Wesselius in the Roger Epp Room at Augustana, on March 13 at noon. If the deal or offer sends up red flags, then never second guess and stop it in its tracks. Some warning signs of possible fraud or scam include the following. Telephone calls or emails that claim to be from the government, asking you to pay money or pay your taxes up front to receive a prize or a gift. Requesting money be sent to them via courier, or put money on a prepaid card or gift card, such as ITunes cards) and sent to them with codes off the cards. Fashions, fun and fund raising a wonderful combination for a great evening out on the town. On Thursday, March 21, join the Hospice Society of Camrose and District for the second annual Fashion For Funds fashion show and fundraiser to be held at the Camrose Resort Casino beginning at 6 p.m. Local Camrose clothiers will be highlighting spring and summer fashions, as well as a nostalgic peek at ensembles of yesteryear. The event will be held in the Ballroom and includes food, a 50/50 draw, silent auction and door prizes, not to mention a glimpse forward into fashion trends and backward into fashions forgotten. All funds raised from tickets sales and the evening inclusions go towards the Hospice Society of Camrose and District. Hospice Society of Camrose and District program coordinator Bill Harder explains the importance of such events and community donations in the continual work Hospice does to serve Camrose and surrounding area. “People will ask, ‘What happens to my donation at the Fashion for Funds event?’ so I explain that a grieving child is supported in their loss. A woman at end of life dies surrounded by compassion. A parent whose child has died receives care. Aquatic Centre renovation and expansion behind schedule By Lori Larsen

Structural issues with the roof above the existing pool, at the Aquatic Centre, have caused a minimum of a five-month delay to the completion date of the Aquatic Centre Renovation and Expansion Project. During the March 4 regular council meeting, City of Camrose community services general manager, Ryan Poole presented council with an update on the project. “During demolition of the interior of the existing Aquatic Centre building, specifically the area about the pool, where the waterslide was located, the general contractor, Clark Builders discovered some issues with the brackets holding the beams of the interior roof, causing safety concerns.” City administration secured the services of Wood Research Designs

(WRD)to conduct inspections and testing of the roof structure. During the inspection of the roof, WRD installed temporary shoring to secure the roof safely which, due to the location, halted Clark Builders from demolishing the existing pool floor and working on that particular area of the project. “Clark Builders managed to do some changes in their timeline and keep the ball rolling during the inspection,” explained Poole. Poole said that on the recommendation of administration, WRD also tested a few other areas within the existing Aquatic centre, including the change room and front lobby areas, to determine if there were any issues in other areas. “The main pool area, the public change rooms and front lobby area tests have

come back and Clark Builders, along with BR 2 Architecture services will have some recommendations and estimates for the roof repairs, along with some options on the main area where the waterslide used to be located.” Administration suggested to Clark Builders to present a list of concerns on findings of all areas and recommendations for full repairs, in an effort to avoid any surprises that may occur later in the renovations. “We will then present all of these options to council at the next council meeting where we will have Clark Builders and BR2 Architecture present, to answer questions.” Poole said that while this discovery and subsequent inspection has set the project behind schedule by five months to date, the con-

tractor hopes to be able to make up some of the lost time and that administration proposed to Clark Builders the feasibility of being far enough along in 2020, to allow the Swim Club and other program groups in on time for their seasons. Councillor Wayne Throndson asked if the projected completion date would now be March or April 2020. Poole indicated that as long as there are no further delays and they can get the roof and shoring done as quickly as possible, that is the proposed timeline. T hrondson also inquired as to whether there have been any advance claims made by Clark Builders. Poole replied, “To date, there have been no claims for advance due to delay, but there will eventually be a cost tacked on

at the end of the project. “Every month that they are delayed, they have onsite costs–a flat rate that they have to pay the staff.” Throndson asked about the cost of those charges. Poole said, “Right now, their estimate is about $90,000 per each month of delay.” Throndson noted, “So the cost of $450,000 plus is simply the cost of delay that is tacked on the project with no additional benefit?” Poole replied yes. With reference to the $500,000 additional contingency that was approved by council in November 2018, Throndson suggested to council that they consider increasing the contingency again once the report on the roof is presented in two weeks time. “I think we should revisit what that budget is looking like.” Continued on page 14

Poole added that the cost so far for the shoring and having the research company come in and conduct the inspections has used up the original $500,000 project contingency. “The two contingencies added

together (original approved with project in May and November 2018 additional contingency) has not been used up. The initial $500,000 was just enough to cover the work that has been done to date,” which Poole said included the abatement and the testing.

Throndson asked if the $90,000 per month delay costs proposed by Clark Builders includes any subtrades. Poole said Clark Builders will be carefully going over all claims by subtrades to determine their legitimacy.

The findings of the WRD testing and inspection, along with recommendations to remedy the issues, will be presented to council during the March 18 council meeting.

I’m really excited,” said Abby, 15. “It’s a cool experience for us to be with professional dancers. Ballet Jörgen is bringing the classic tale of Coppélia, a doll that comes to life, to the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on March 14 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Local dancers from the Camrose Academy of Dance and Ballet Camrose will join professional performers from Ballet Jörgen to learn new dance steps and train with professional dancers.

The girls could have roles as dolls or creatures. “You have to pay attention to the role you are given and pick it up easily. You can’t stand there not knowing what you are doing. When the director says something, you should know it. I go to a lot of workshops where we work on things to be prepared. This opportunity gives me a first hand look at dance and if I want to do it in the future professionally. It inspires me to be like a professional. I feel that I can connect with them. I know for sure that I want to teach dance and give something back to all of the little dancers that I’m going to teach,” suggested Abby. “You need to pick up on things and really learn your role. It is motivational to know that you are good enough to dance with professionals. It is a great experience to have. I feel learning and working hard on techniques will really help me. I would love the opportunity to be a professional for a few years, if I could, and teach dance as well,” shared Brooklyn. “I hope this experience improves my dancing and this is an amazing opportunity. I look up to Ballet Jörgen because they are a Canadian company. They show you don’t have to move away, but you can dance professionally in Canada,” concluded Abby. “I welcome the experience to learn better techniques. If ever I was good enough to be a professional, it is good to know you can dance in Canada and stay close to home,” said Brooklyn.

Brent Butt loved his stop in Camrose two years ago and his sold-out two shows at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. So much so, that he decided to include another visit this spring. He will be on stage March 19 at 7:30 p.m. The Corner Gas creator and star of the International Emmy Award nominated hit has also been in several television series, movies and comedy specials over the years.

“Corner Gas was a lot of work and a lot of fun. I miss the camaraderie of the cast, but it was the right time to leave the live action when we did, so that helps,” said Brent, prior to his show in 2017. “I have a production company and the idea is to stay in the game, keep making television shows and movies.” It was a busy time for him. “After each season, I would hit the road (comedy tour) because it is my favourite thing to do,” continued Brent. “In a perfect world, I

would be allowed to do both. Live performance is really the hub for me. Getting up in front of a live audience and trying to be funny is where I learned to be funny. The less time I’m away from that, the less chance I have of making a funny show or movie. If you are doing a single camera production with no audience, you are really relying on your experience of what makes people laugh,” he added. “The hub of everything is stand-up comedy. That allows me to do everything else.”

Audrey Mae Hitman December 5, 1939 ~ March 1, 2019 Audrey Hitman of Camrose, Alberta passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, March 1, 2019 at the age of 79 years after a courageous battle with cancer. Audrey will be lovingly remembered by her children David (Noreene and family) Hitman, Kathy (Chris) Gerritsen, Sharon Thomson and Robin Hitman; grandchildren Kristen, Nicholas, Stephanie and Erik; siblings Gary (Susan) Johanson and Shirley Latimer; and numerous nieces and nephews. Audrey was predeceased by her parents Peter and Frances Johanson; and brother Kenneth Johanson. Audrey lived a full life as an amazing mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Her whole life was dedicated to her community and she never missed an opportunity to lend a helping hand. She was a true inspiration as a foster parent for over twenty years and as a volunteer at the Camrose Food Bank and Camrose Crisis Line. In 2015, Audrey was nominated for a provincial Minister’s Senior Citizen Award and was recognized by the City of Camrose for her contributions to the betterment of the community. Audrey’s true passion in life was nurturing over one hundred international students who lived with her over the last thirty years. Countless hours were spent working on their English skills, helping with school assignments and teaching them to drive. She enjoyed spending her winters in the arena cheering on her Japanese hockey players. Audrey was blessed to be able to travel to many countries around the world to visit her “kids” and their families. Audrey’s favorite memories were the times spent at the cabin in British Columbia with her family. She was also the master of scouting out treasures at garage sales, loved singing along to Burton Cummings and Neil Diamond and could play a mean game of crib. Most of all, she adored her family and instilled strong values and traditions that have and always will be a big part of their lives. Her four grandchildren were the loves of her life. She cherished the time that she spent as their biggest fan at dance competitions and recitals, hockey, soccer and basketball games. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. A Celebration of her Life was held at Messiah Lutheran Church on Monday, March 11, 2019. Byron Olson November 26, 1935 ~ February 26, 2019 Byron Olson passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at the age of 83. Despite a diagnosis of Early Onset Parkinson’s in his 40s, Byron’s mental resilience, perseverance, strength, and creativity allowed him to maintain a lifelong engagement with the theatre and a rich output of art and architecture. Byron was born on November 26, 1935 to Elmer and Cecelia Olson in Camrose, Alberta, the second oldest of five children. Byron graduated from the UBC School of Architecture and worked for the esteemed architectural firm of Erickson and Massey. He later established his own firm and became part of the innovative planning and design team of the Britannia Community Centre in Vancouver. He designed many public buildings and private residences in the Lower Mainland and the Kootenays, including the Kimberley and Sparwood Public Libraries, Trickle Creek Golf Clubhouse, and the Cranbrook Alliance Church. Byron’s love of wilderness and the environment informed many of his ecologically friendly designs. While at UBC, Byron was very involved in the Varsity Outdoor Club (VOC). He was an accomplished mountaineer, enjoyed skiing, rock climbing and building cabins in unique and surprising places. He scaled Mount Waddington twice and was active in mountain rescue. Byron’s love of adventure and travel took him all over the world. In Byron’s later years, he dedicated more time to painting, drawing, and cartooning. He wrote many plays which were produced by Cranbrook and Kimberley Community Theatres. One of his proudest moments was winning Best Director in BC for his work directing the play Oleana at the Mainstage Festival (2004). Byron will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humour, and community engagement. His actions and the legacy of his buildings will continue to inspire and touch the lives of many. Byron is survived by his soul mate Penny Ohanjanian; daughters Oona (Jordan) and Rebecca and son Aaron; grandchildren Charlie and Benjamin; sister Donna (Bob) Luce; brothers Dr. Ted Olson and Daryl (Leslie) Olson; and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be a CELEBRATION OF BYRON’S LIFE on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Centre 64 in Kimberley.

Gladys Juvernia Taranger Gladys Juvernia Taranger passed away after a lengthy illness on Feb. 28, 2019 at the age of 89 years at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. She leaves to mourn her passing brother Lawrence (Ruth); sister-in-law Angela; nieces Brenda (Tim) and Leah (Michael) and nephews Philip (Nimi) and Bruce (Lisa); as well as numerous grand nieces and nephews and extended family. She was predeceased by her mother Agda, father Alfred and brother Milton. She served as a missionary in Ethiopia for 17 years, working both as a nurse and in literature translation. Since 1976; she lived in Camrose and worked at Rosehaven Home as a nurse for a number of years. The celebration of her life was held at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Wetaskiwin (4730-51 Avenue) on Friday, March 8, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Doug Gordon officiating. Interment was at Fridhem Cemetery in Ferintosh, AB at 2:00 p.m. for family. Alexsander Adolf Herman August 18, 1925 ~ March 3, 2019 Alex Herman was born August 18, 1925, and passed away peacefully on March 3, 2019 in Burnaby, BC. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his family and friends. Alex is survived by daughters Doreen Regnier, Audrey Herman, Bernice Herman and Marilyn (Mark) Lyon; and sons Larry (Urte) Herman and Allan (Tammy) Herman; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers George (Phyllis) Herman and Nick (Marie) Herman; and sister Madeline Boser. Through his work in the construction industry, he worked and lived in many provinces, finally settling in Ft. McMurray and then the Camrose area. Alex will be remembered for his love of fixing and building things. He especially loved birds and was known as “The Bird Man of Camrose” for the beautifully hand-painted bird ornaments he made and sold at the local markets. After the passing of his wife Mary Herman, he relocated to Kelowna, BC, where he married Johanna Bratt who predeceased him in 2013. A Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, 22561 121 Avenue, Maple Ridge, BC. Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Marks June 24, 1944 ~ March 3, 2019 Betty was born to George and Josephine Shute in Camrose, Alberta on June 24, 1944. She was born into a large farming family in the Dinant area where she attended school, first in Dinant and then in Round Hill. After graduating, she pursued a career as a nursing aid. She worked in hospitals in and around the Breton/Drayton Valley area where she met Fred Marks. Fred and Betty were married in Camrose on July 9, 1966 and proceeded to start a life together. Fred and Betty had three sons Jim, Kevin and Scott. After living in several places, they settled down to country life, ten miles north of Camrose. Betty had several careers in her time, but the one she enjoyed the most was being a mother and wife. Albeit, it was very trying for her at times as all four men in the house could be quite a handful! She thoroughly enjoyed working in her garden, tending to the various plants and flowers. Betty also enjoyed working outside of the house at the Camrose Booster where she made many lifelong friends. But what she enjoyed the most was being surrounded by her grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sisters, brothers and friends. She lived her life the way she wanted to, surrounded by the ones she loved. She had a big heart, a beautiful smile and will be sorely missed. She leaves to mourn her sons Kevin and Scott (Rebecca); three grandchildren Aarika, Violet and Joseph; and numerous sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews and friends. Betty was predeceased by her husband Fred; son Jim; brother Ken; and her parents George and Josephine. It’s no secret that the late 1960s and early 1970s Chevrolet and GMC trucks are among the best vehicles ever built. Restoring them is easy to do with so many of the trucks still on the road today. Parts are everywhere. They are easy to work on. It doesn’t bother Ben Schiere of Edberg that his 1972 Chevrolet C10 is not the only model featured at local car shows. The trucks are as popular today as when they were built. “I have always loved this style of truck,” said Ben. The C indicated two-wheel drive and K indicated fourwheel drive. The truck was too good to part out. “I bought this truck from a guy I was working with at the time. He was rebuilding one and this was his parts truck. It was too good to be a parts truck, so I bought it from him and ended up fixing it up slowly,” said Ben. “I just started a new job, so I didn’t have the money to fix everything right away.” He worked on it for about 10 years before fin-

ishing it into the truck he wanted. “I actually thought at the time that they were rare. I was wrong, it seems like everybody has one. They were built to last,” said Ben.

FUN FACTS

The 1972 models were very similar to the 1971 models, with the only change being the rear view mirror was glued to the windshield rather than bolted to top of the cab, and metal or vinyl-covered flat door panels were no longer available; all trim level door panels were molded plastic with integral armrests and wood grain inserts on Cheyenne and Sierra trim levels. Internal differences include a new door panel design and the addition of a strengthening screw on the inside of the door below the vent window division bar. Although one is produced by Chevrolet and the other by GMC, both trucks fall under the General Motors umbrella. The two trucks share many similarities when it comes to the drivetrain and the overall appearance. However, they still have their fair share of differences. Two-wheel-drive, long-box trucks are the easiest examples to find these days as they were produced in the greatest quantities. Four-wheel-drive pickups are considerably rarer, especially short-wheelbase halftons. In the case of the Blazer, four-wheel drives are the norm and two-wheel-drive Blazers, introduced in 1970, are unusual.

“I lowered this one a little bit to take the up look out of it. I put a 350 motor in it with an automatic transmission. It had a six cylinder standard in it. I had it off frame and re-did everything and put it all back together,” Ben said. He added a few things to the truck. “I put power brakes on instead of the manual disc brakes. I also added power steering to improve the handling and duel exhaust. I just added basic things that you would add when you fix older vehicles.” In 1971, the front brakes on all light-duty trucks were switched from drum brakes to disc brakes, resulting in much less brake fade under heavy use. He likes to share his builds with other people. “I like to go to the local shows. I don’t like the long shows in the heat all day. I like to go to Camrose, Round Hill, Johnson Beach and Bawlf,” said Ben.

For restoration, it should also be noted that the door and window cranks were slightly longer due to the molded plastic door panels, and the vent windows

were now secured with a single screw on the inside of the door, thus differentiating it from the 1971 model year.

The biggest story at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer was how Team Alberta captured gold medals for Alberta. The sport drew huge crowds at the Gary W. Alberta broke records at Canada Winter Games By Murray Green

It was an historic Winter Games for Team Alberta and for local athletes. Team Alberta wheelchair basketball players Bradon Doll, Jayna Doll (brother and sister) and Jamie Cole highlighted Camrose on the map by earning gold medals at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, from Feb. 14 to 23. Team Alberta surpassed the all-time medals count for the province with 100 medals, including a record 36 gold, 33 silver and 31 bronze. They finished third behind Quebec and Ontario. Wheelchair basketball electrified the sold-out crowd by winning the gold medal against a tough opponent from Ontario, the first gold medal for Alberta since 1995 for that sport. Alberta won 59-54 in preliminary action against Ontario, so the players had some stiff competition to earn the gold. Ontario created the upset in the semi-final by giving Quebec its first loss of the tournament. Brandon Doll had a huge game scoring 29 points. Team Ontario came out strong from the initial minutes of play and posted a 14-9 lead after the initial quarter. Resilient and determined to win this game in front of their fans, Team Alberta bounced back in the second quarter to show a 25-20 lead at halftime. Both teams rallied

In cross-country skiing, Viking athlete Mackenzie Grove was 16th in the women’s sprint. Alberta also took home the Centennial Cup for showing greatest improvement, and the Jack Pelech Award for best combination of good sportsmanship, fair play, cooperation and competitive performance. The Games were held in Red Deer from Feb. 15 to March 3. “Congratulations to all of the athletes, coaches and support staff on Team Alberta, as well as the City of Red Deer, for your historic 2019 Canada Winter Games. Hockey Vikings stopped by SAIT The Augustana Vikings hockey team battled the SAIT Trojans in the first round of Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference playoffs. They won 2-1, but lost the next two games 4-3 in overtime to be eliminated. In a precursor to the playoffs, the two teams met in the last weekend series of the regular season. Augustana swept the series 5-4 and 7-6 in double overtime. The close games were a glimpse into the

The Vikings women’s basketball club placed fourth in provincials at Fort McMurray on Feb. 28 to March 2. Augustana beat Medicine Hat 74-67 in the first game in with Jessica Haenni with 21 and Alyssa Banez with 20 points leading the way. In the second game, Keyano won 55-42 with Banez scoring 11 points. In the bronze medal match, the Vikings lost 56-46 with Samantha Dargis leading the offence with 13 points. Tobore Okome of the Vikings was selected as the 2018-19 ACAC women’s basketball north Rookie of the Year. She brought great energy off the bench along with a lot of offensive prowess and finesse, averaging 7.7 points per game and shooting 57.5 per cent from the floor. Tobore works hard on the boards had 3.5 defensive rebounds and two offensive rebounds per game in her 16.5 minutes. Robyn Fleckenstein of the Vikings has been named the ACAC women’s basketball Coach of the Year. In just two years at the helm of Augustana, Fleckenstein has distinguished herself as being a hard-working and dedicated coach. She works tirelessly for the betterment of her studentathletes and the Vikings basketball program. After narrowly missing the playoffs in the 2017-18 season, the Vikings improved their record to 15-9 under Fleckenstein this year. Augustana men’s team earned the right to bring home bronze medals with a 107-104 overtime victory over the Medicine Hat Rattlers. Five players reached double digits in scoring, led by Mason Hunter with 23 and Darian Smigorowsky with 20 points. Augustana beat Red Deer 85-75 in the first game, Hunter led with 22 points, while Michael Stasuik chipped in with 16 points. The Vikings only loss in Lloydminster was to Concordia, 100-70. Harsh winter hard on wildlife By Lori Larsen

This unusually cold January, February and March has not only taken its toll on us but may have an adverse affect on the local wildlife as well. During extreme cold weather conditions ungulates such a deer, elk and moose have a more difficult time surviving and in an effort to provide themselves with nutrition will turn to food sources that are not natural to their behavior of grazing and foraging. “These wildlife (especially deer and elk) will herd up and travel in herds to easily available food sources that include farmers’ and ranchers’ feed stacks (hay, silage and green feed),” explained Camrose Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch District Officer Lorne Rinkel. “It doesn’t do wildlife any good to herd up. They do it out of necessity. Herding allows for easier travel in the snow and less calories burnt, but subjects the animals to being targeted by predators.” Unfortunately the results of herding up are frustrated producers who lose costly feed to the wildlife (wildlife crop depredation) and the wildlife themselves, who in the case of deer, especially, are not meant to feed off these food sources.

“An elk’s internal system is fairly good at digesting the feed from feed stacks but deer and other wildlife species such as pronghorns (not common in Camrose area), do not have the flora in their guts to properly digest hay or green feed. “So they will eat and eat and defecate, but they do not retain sufficient nutrition to survive in the long run,” said Rinkel. “In April, like clockwork, after a harsh winter

like we have had this year, a good deal of these animals will die because their bodies did not process the feed properly.” Rinkel explained that when he finds dead deer, elk or moose that appear to have died for unknown reasons (usually in April) he will examine one of the animals bones to deter-

mine the colour of the bone marrow. “White bone marrow indicates healthy marrow but if the marrow is red and looks like jelly there was a zero chance the animal would have ever recovered to good health.” Rinkel highly suspects that this coming spring he will see some winter kill of these animals. “The moose do the best in these harsh conditions because they are tall and can browse on tree branches, but deer (white tail followed by mule deer) are the most susceptible, followed by elk.” R in kel f u r ther explained that herding up and feeding off feed stacks is more likely to occur in the northern part of his district. “Up near Miquelon Lake, over towards Vegreville we see more wildlife crop depredation because it is flatter and more wind swept.” The snowpack is harder and crustier making it difficult for the wildlife to forage for food. “We get some south of Camrose but not nearly as much as north of Camrose.” With the amount of snowpack and continual low temperatures the hopes of spring grass for wildlife to graze on may still be a while off.
