CAMROSE & DISTRICT

Though the photo may suggest otherwise, these young artists are anything but sad about getting ready for Music Festival! In fact, they're so thrilled about soon taking the stage that they each spent much of their Spring Break preparing! Tadhg Barker (leaning on piano), Tayla Morningway (on stool), Hazel Sylvestre (with book), Mya Bergstrom (sitting), Genevieve Simonot (arms on hips) posed, each reflecting their chosen discipline.

The truly inexcusable 25 second error

Waiting on hold for a phone company to answer… I know from experience that some phone companies answer calls quickly. This one doesn’t. Hasn’t for decades. Yep, once again they’re living down to my expectations. Years ago this phone company’s voice messages said, “Your call is important to us,” which was clearly not true. I used to think, “You’re a phone company. If my call was important to you, you’d answer the phone!” At least they don’t say that any more. Now they try to fend you off by urging you to solve your problem online, or to leave a number they can call back at their convenience. They intersperse those messages with (increasingly irritating) chirpy promos for products they sell. Anything but answer your call promptly. Pity their unfortunate staff people who have to answer calls from people who are cranky after the long wait. Ironically, I was making the phone call from a store that sells phones. I needed some information that I couldn’t access any other way except by phoning the slow-answering phone company. The store was giving me amazingly helpful service. I felt pampered. Made the phone company I was phoning seem even less helpful. ***

Okay, enough snarking. Eventually a human being answered. The information was provided and life moved on. But…I was struck by a contrast and not just the contrast between two Canadian phone companies. The lead sentence of this story caught my attention: “A Japanese rail company has apologized for ‘any inconvenience’ caused to customers after a train left the station 25 seconds early.” I’m not making that up. An apology about 25 seconds? The story goes on to say, “Japan has one of the most punctual railway services in the world, and so it was deemed an incident worthy of a public press release, apology and an internal investigation when the 7:12 a.m. train at Notogawa Station left at 7:11 a.m. and 35 seconds.” Several customers were not able to board the train. One complained to a station attendant, who referred the matter to the headquarters of West Japan Railways. In a follow-up press release, West Japan Railways said that it had investigated the incident and found that the conductor had “misunderstood” the departure time and signalled too early. The company said it would provide training to prevent similar events from happening again. The railway did point out that the train arrived at its next stop precisely at the prescribed time. ***

Here’s what really struck me about the company’s response. The company said: “The great inconvenience we placed upon our customers was truly inexcusable.” Imagine! An admission of error, an apology and stating what the company is doing so the error does not happen again. Imagine! A company saying out loud and in public that customer inconvenience is truly inexcusable. Made me feel wistful. Wished the phone company that inconveniences its phone-in customers all the time had that ethic. If customer convenience mattered to that phone company, it would figure out how to answer phone calls promptly. They brag about their technology, but only use it for selling, not for customer convenience. Wished online corporations that provide FAQs and chatbots and anything else they can think of to avoid direct human contact with users (not even called customers) had some of that ethic. Even more than that, I wished all companies–and all public services and all governments–would be willing to investigate and own up to errors, apologize genuinely, acknowledge that it’s truly inexcusable, and say how they’re going to assure that it doesn’t happen again. Wouldn’t that be refreshing? I guess if it could happen in a Japanese railway company, it could happen in other places too… Let’s hold that thought. ***

I’d love to hear from you! If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

Work together

The up-coming provincial election is fielding a variety of candidates /parties who each claim to represent the tr ue aspirations of Albertans. I expect that a portion of each political parties’ messaging will sadly involve demonizing their respective rivals. In this time of high employment uncertainty and a national crisis in terms of a severe down turn of the economy, should not those running for office consider a coalition government not out of legislative necessity, but to combine resources for the common good of our province, as well as the best for Canada. The main-line Christian churches of Camrose are very different from each other, often with polar opposite theologies on key matters such as: what is Holy Communion? Yet, come on Tuesday, April 9 of at 7 p.m. to Saint Andrew’s (A nglican) Church and see these churches worshipping together on common ground. PLURA churches still have much to learn but perhaps there is also something to contribute to the collective provincial election process that is ahead of us all; unity need not be based on conformity, but rather on the common good. The common good sets aside party politics for a united stand. Jacques Vaillancourt, Camrose Bronze medal

So here it is sports fans. Camrose is a college town. Home to the University of A lberta Au g u st a n a Ca mpu s. Camrose is also a sports town. Straight up, disappointed in the coverage afforded to bronze medal winning Augustana men’s Vikings basketball team in The Camrose Booster. I am an Augustana Vikings fan. I am also a basketball fan. Men’s and ladies’. I have never had a child on either team. I just enjoy watching local well-coached, ha rd-work ing basketball teams. The writeup about coach Robyn Fleckenstein is accurate in every word, she is first class and deserves every accolade.

I am truly hoping I am premature in this observation, that there is bigger noise coming on their behalf, but the scant four paragraphs about the men’s team winning a bronze medal frustrated and saddened me. This is a huge deal. First time in school history the men’s basketball team has brought home a medal. Dave Drabiuk has worked hard at his coach ing sk ills a nd recruitment to build this program. Fans over the years have watched him develop teams that every year increase their level of determination, work ethic and character. The best basketball is happening right here at Augustana. This bronze medal team had two seniors. The only game they lost in that ACAC playoff run was to nationally ranked Concordia University. A well-coached team the Viking men had beaten once in regular season play. These guys are some of the hardest working kids I’ve seen on a basketball court and they brought hardware home to Camrose. Student athletic programs are a challenge on so many levels. There is a team behind the team and the coaches. There are administrators busting it for funding and the people that must figure out how to spread that funding out, families doing every thing they can to support these kids, sponsors that do what they can, local fans paying money at the door. There is little local coverage anymore to help them build support. The heart and work ethic put in by these coaches and their people here should be celebrated far more often than it is. In this moment, with bronze medals on their chests, the Augustana men’s basketball team has earned more than a minor headline and 82 words at the bottom of the article from their only local media. Suppor t our local student athletes and the awards they have achieved for their efforts. With pride, watch them ‘keep their identity.’ Terri Blackwell, Bawlf

More sports

Pathetic is the only word that can be used to describe The Booster’s level of coverage of University of A lberta Augustana Vikings athletics, particularly in the March 12 edition, given the school’s recent successes. The Booster has certainly included far more banal activities on its front page than what Vikings basketball has accomplished this year (I’ll let the other sports speak for themselves), namely: bronze medal for men’s basketball in the provincial playoffs– the first basketball medal ever in the school’s histor y; four th place finish by women’s basketball in the provincial playoffs, including beating number one-ranked Medicine Hat in their first playoff game; women’s coach Robyn Fleckenstein being named ACAC Coach of the Year; Tobore Okome being named ACAC Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year; and several allstars on both the men’s and women’s team. Sure, these things were mentioned in the article on March 12, but everything was from the website –nothing more. These are all things to be celebrated and headlined. F ra n k ly, ou r coaches and student athletes, who work exceptionally hard to represent their school and this community the way it should be represented, deser ve better. At the very least, there should be actual inter views with the coaches. Ca mrose is ver y lucky to have a postsecondary institution in town, particularly one that competes at a high level in athletics and makes (or should make) the community proud. With 20 per cent of the students at Augustana being student-athletes (with the emphasis on student), it’s time The Booster took its name seriously and showed its support for one of the main things that makes Camrose the great community it is. Jerry Iwanus, Camrose

The Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce summed up another busy year during the annual general meeting. Outgoing president, Julie Girard looked back at the year 2018 reporting on the Chamber’s events and initiatives. “We managed, once again to host some of the most successful events in the community.” In conclusion, Girard thanked the members and executive for their support during her time as president. “The people involved in Chambers of Commerce are passionate about creating an environment that promotes business in your community, your province and in your country.” The new Chamber board of directors consists of president Chuck Erman, past president Julie Girard, vicepresidents Jason Heise and Tracy Brandingen, directors Sam Bowen, Kevin Chornohos, Keith Treffry, Bram Kaludjer, Kara Brown, Sterling Bascello, Jessica Puddicombe, Ron Sutherland, Marilou Yampolsky, Dave Borman, Malcolm Boyd representing the City of Camrose and Sharon Anderson (executive director of the Chamber). Dean Inman, on behalf of Kroeger Joyce Inman Chartered Professional Accountants, presented its review of the Camrose and District Chamber of Commerce 2018 financial statements. “Based on our review, procedures that we have performed, nothing has come to our attention that causes us to believe that these financial statements are not in all material respect, in accordance with Canadian Accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations.” Cash in bank as of Oct. 31, the year end, was reported to be over $155,000. Assets total $223,374 and liabilities and deferred revenues at the end of the year total $37,336. Total revenues for the year were $272,099, down from 2017 total of $283,110 and total expenses were down to $272,829 from 2017 total of $279,567. Prior to amortization ($9,640) the Chamber experienced a loss of $730, which Inman indicated is close to break even, the goal of a notfor-profit organization. Guest speaker Alberta Chamber of Commerce (ACC) president, Ken Kolby made a presentation to members and guests on how voting prosperity during the upcoming provincial election can play a significant role in the future of business in Alberta. “A more prosperous Alberta is a stronger, equitable and healthier Alberta.

“Businesses are the backbone of this province’s economy and they are the job creators who provide an opportunity for Albertans.” Kolby reported that the ACC is a voluntary federation of 124 community chambers who, in turn, represent approximately 26,000 businesses in Alberta. “There is at least one chamber in each provincial and federal riding. By membership we are the largest business organization in the province – businesses, which employ hundreds of thousands Albertans every where.” Ken Kolby

Kolby explained the four pillars of “Vote Prosperity” that address the most important issues facing Alberta’s businesses to include: strengthening businesses competitiveness, growing business trade, building healthy communities and improving government accountability. “Our prosperity depends on free enterprise and free market economy. One of the government’s roles is to support the businesses and entrepreneurs who create their shared benefit for us all.” Kolby related that 95 per cent of businesses are small and medium-sized business. “What we are hearing from our members, is long term prosperity in this province is at risk. “Business owners are part of the social fabric of any community,” continued Kolby stating they are often the volunteers within the community and have a vested interest in keeping employees employed. “All of them (business owners in Alberta) are deeply committed to a vision of this province being a globally competitive leader – as an economy and a stable jurisdiction where entrepreneurs can start, sustain and grow a business.” In conclusion, Kolby indicated that the province needs to do a better job of listening to and working with key partners (business community). For more information on the Vote Prosperity, visit the Alberta Chamber of Commerce website at http://www.abchamber.ca.

City report

Deer crossings raise eyebrows By Lori Larsen and Ron Pilger

By Lori Larsen

On March 6 City of Camrose Mayor Norm Mayer presented some of the highlights of the State of the City address to Chamber members and guests. Mayer began by outlining the distribution of tax dollars on an average house valued at $275,000 with a property tax of $3,032 divided as follows: administration $364, arts and culture $168, policing $438, engineering $59, transit $25, fire services $134, planning $60, public works $458, IT services $93, parks $161, recreation facilities $331 and school requisition and Lodge Levy $741 which is remitted directly to the school system and the Lodge Authority. The City approved a tax increase of 1.38 per cent this year which amounts to an increase of $41 per year beginning 2019 (based on the average home $275,000 tax bill of $3,032.) “In 2018, the City approved the 2019 Capital Spending budget of $23.4 million.” Mayor Mayer broke down the budget by department as follows (in $millions): community services $1.6, major project aquatic centre $11.7 (since revised), police $.3, recycling $.1, engineering $4.5, corporate and protective services $.4, major project Waste Water Treatment Plant $3.8, wastewater $.1 and water system $.9. “Road improvement was identified as a top priority in past surveys, and in 2016, the City committed to a 10 year $31 million road rehabilitation plan. The City remains committed to the plan with an additional $3.1 million of road projects approved within the 2019 engineering budget.” Mayer noted that both the WWTP $42.5 million and the aquatic centre $24 million costs will be financed without causing any increase to property taxes. With regards to development in growth, the total number of major development permits showed a

slight decrease in 2018, consisting of 382 total permits from 2017 of 398 total permits. The number of new lots (registered or in progress) totalled 52 in 2018 with the majority of new lots created being residential. Projects with approved development permits consist of the LivDental Professional Building ( located between the Gemini Centre and Konto) $1.5 million, Lamb Ford collision Centre expansion $1.169 million, Sleep Country Canada $920,000, Dental Office (former Stockmen’s Chophouse) $700,000, Our Lady of Mount Pleasant modulars $700,000, New Hansen Denture Clinic $700,000, Tiras Dairies expansion $450,000 and $400,000. The total number of businesses licenses for City were 576, regional 202, home occupation 280 and hawker/peddlers there were none resulting in a total of $209,060 in business license fees collected. Success stories

Mayor Mayer related some of the successful projects and initiatives undertaken and completed by the City in 2018. “Some things that we have done that have worked out in our favour include, on Oct. 22, 2018 the City’s contractor had substantially completed their work on the 48 Avenue Bridge Project and it was reopened to the public.” Mayer noted that while there were some comments during construction about the inconvenience, there have been a lot of comments after the reopening indicating the pubic’s satisfaction with the new bridge. “In addition to the bridge

there is a new pedestrian underpass that connects the trail systems on both the north and south sides of the highway.” Other successful initiatives include; the launch of the City’s new website with new features that allow people to sign up for recreations programs online, a community calendar allowing users to submit events and a place for residents to submit a concern; passing of the cannabis bylaw; launch of the Camrose Connector (two year project funded by the Provincial government as part of the Rural Transportation pilot program. “In the last six months there have been about 2,100 riders that have taken advantage of the transportation system.” What’s to come

The City is preparing for, and in some instances already in the process of beginning, other major projects including E-Services, which will have a paperless utility bill option and other online services. “Starting this year residents will have the option to sign up and receive their utility bill via email,” reported Mayer. “There will be some advertising done in the next couple of weeks to encourage more people to sign up and receive their utility bills online.” Another pilot project the City is working on is the Camrose Carpool, a two-year, free, web-based (with phone-in option)program which is part of the provincial Rural Transportation Pilot Program experimenting with the need for transportation from rural communities to Camrose. The Camrose Booster has done it again. This year’s April Fools edition which, due to the awkward timing of our weekly publishing schedule, hit mailboxes, Camrose Now! and our own website on March 26. The breaking news cover story had a few residents thinking about the semantics of slowing down for soon to be unveiled Safe Deer Crossing areas throughout Camrose. In typical style, The Booster put forth a fairly plausible case for the provincial government’s exciting new safe Deer Crossing initiative. The surprise content meant that a few readers felt compelled to express their gratitude, voice their concern or, in some cases, good naturedly play along with the ruse at the expense of friends and neighbours. The following are some of the responses received through social media and letters to the editor. Thank you for your responses. Beware that the 364-day countdown towards April 1, 2020 has already begun in the creative minds at The Booster. On Camrose Now Rant and Rave

Donna N - Congratulations to the Booster. Absolutely love your sense of humor. Best laugh I have had in ages. Michael O - I doubt the city would mind if hungry people went and ate some of the leftover deer food. And the deer seem nice, they’ll share. Wendy S - Those kinds of April fool jokes are not great. Brian W - Wendy S, I thought it was a great joke. Lori S - It was hilarious once we all read the second page. Only took me an extra day to get that far lol. Nick S - A little early for an April fool’s joke don’t you figure? Jackie K-W - Nick S It is early. Obviously, they have to do it early to give people enough time to figure out it’s a joke. Cindy R - Also their next publication comes out after April Fool’s so there’s that.

Fay E - Gotcha!!! April fool’s!!!! Camrose Now!

Don F - Awesome job Ron! Caught a lot of folks! Rod/Tina M - April fools joke. This is good!! Mary B - ha ha but please find a way to keep them out of my yard. Edie L - April Fools joke Monike Monike S-L - Edie L ya I read the paper after I had commented lol. I guess they got me. Lori S - My bad I honestly thought this was for real. I didn’t read page 2 as I never got that far. Ooops. Sherran S - Love the cover story sometimes as Camrosians we would like Deer crossings. Kathy S - That was a good one. April Fools Jeanette F - ty for protecting our deer. It’s so nice to see them. It makes my day. And if the deer are getting hit, slow down drivers. PS and if this is an April fool joke. I love it. Amanda K D - April fools! Pat T - well done! Dora K - Marie M - you must be thrilled! Marie M - Dora Kim absolutely love that April fool ha ha! Gabriel P - Interesting. Letters to the Editor April Fools Deer Story

Absolutely ridiculous. very uncaring...was so not impressed. Barb Goodwin, Camrose Deer crossing

Fantastic job. Every year I get sucked in by your April Fool edition. I never seem to learn. But I thought this year’s offering was one of your best. Not only was it ingeniously devious (who can resist deer), but the idea of deer crossings seemed perfectly plausible. In fact, I was about to do everything I could to encourage and promote the project. Fortunately, my wife clued me in before I made a public fool of myself. But I still think it’s a great idea. Looking forward to being bamboozled again next year. Some kind of death wish, I guess. Peter LeBlanc, Camrose

Mayer said. “The public works facility is something that has been on the drawing board for a few years now and we are continuing to explore options for the replacement and/or relocation of the public works building.” The City continues to work with the provincial government on the requirements and design of the Waste Water Treatment Plant upgrades. “We hope that the detailed design will be completed by late 2019 or early 2020, at which point the City will issue the project tender.” On a final note, Mayer stated that the Aquatic Centre Renovation and Expansion is underway, but the City had run into some unexpected issues. “They are working diligently on that with the hope that it will be open by early 2020.”

Kenney visits Camrose on campaign trail By Murray Green

United Conservative Party leader Jason Kenney is on a mission. He wants to be the next premier of Alberta and bring back the Alberta Advantage. He was in Camrose during a local riding candidate fundraiser for Jackie Lovely at the Norsemen Inn on March 25. “We are just three weeks away from a new day in Alberta,” Kenney said of the election day. “So many Albertans have been going through challenging times and it didn’t have to be like this. We have been through ups and downs before, but we never have had a government actively making a bad situation worse. In amidst of a downturn they dug it deeper by raising taxes on everything...and then adding the carbon tax.” Kenney said business and investors were scared away. They (the current government) are shutting down our coal plants. “Alberta is the only province in western Canada to get an ‘F’ on red tape from the Federation of Independent Business. When the NDP started, Alberta was the 14th best place for oil and gas investment. We are now 43rd,” said Kenney. “For decades we had the lowest unemployment and highest employment incomes. Now we have 183,000 jobless Albertans. Unemployment is 43,000 higher than it was four years ago. Our economy is down 3.2 per cent. Unemployment has gone up seven of the last nine months in what the NDP calls a recovery. They are taking us into a $100 billion debt hole,” explained Kenney. “It is going to take years and years of hard work to get out of. The debt threatens our future. They did this, while making a close ally with Justin Trudeau. They sold this province down the river to Trudeau,” he said to

a chorus of boos about the mention of Trudeau. He reminded the audience of more than 200 people, that they added the carbon tax, when we have to heat our homes and drive our vehicles to work. NDP added the carbon tax without the approval of Albertans. “For the Trudeau-Notley alliance all we got in return was a job crisis, a carbon tax and no pipelines. That is reason alone why we need a change on April 16,” said Kenney. “We want to get people back to work, so we can once again be the leader in growth. One of the reasons the premier sold us down the river, in her own words was she was embarrassed about Alberta. She went on CBC and said ‘Alberta was the embarrassing cousin that nobody wants to talk about.’” He pointed out that Alberta’s population doubled over the last four decades because everyone wanted to work in Alberta. “We had the lowest level of poverty and the best social programs. On top of all that, we shared our wealth with other parts of the country. Are we embarrassed about that? Albertans deserve leadership that is never again embarrassed for this province and someone that will stand up for it.” Kenney said the three most important topics of this election is jobs, the economy and pipelines. “Bill number one will be to repeal the carbon tax. It is not about the environment, has done nothing to reduce emissions. While she was driving around Alberta in her gas guzzling SUV, while she was telling us to walk to work. How does that work? How many buses are there from the farm gate to the elevator? She hired an army of people to come in and change our shower heads and light bulbs. You know what Rachel, we are Albertans, we can change our own light bulbs. It was all

about another tax grab. If we are elected on April 16, the carbon tax will be history by April 30,” said Kenney. He added that a job creation tax cut will be announced to once again give us the Alberta advantage. This will create an estimated 55,000 full time jobs across the province. “One of the reasons we have seen a flight of $100 billion in loss of business, one of the reasons our economy is struggling, while there is an oil boom in Texas, is because of the flight of capital equipment and jobs from our province to places that don’t have a carbon tax. They also have less red tape. You can get permission (to drill) of a well in Texas in two weeks, while it can take up to 18 months in Alberta. It is not just oil, a fellow in Cochrane was telling me he waited over a year for a permit to put up a steel fab building in the industrial part of town. Whatever happened to get ‘er done Alberta? That should take a day.” Kenney said he would have a minister in charge of red tape reduction. “He will be the busiest guy in the government,” he joked.

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer’s disease, and has an incidence rate that is expected to double by 2030. In an effort to increase awareness and encourage support, April has been declared Parkinson’s Awareness Month. The theme of Help Us Stop a Thief is intended to awaken people’s sensitivity by using the analogy that the disease steals away the ability to walk, talk, swallow and even smile from the person suffering from Parkinson’s. On April 5, join in on a Camrose Town Hall held from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m. at the Camrose Fire Hall with Parkinson Association of Alberta CEO, John Petryshen in learning more about the disease and increasing the awareness. The average age of the diagnoses of Parkinson’s disease is 56 years old and 10 to 15 per cent of people with Parkinson disease are diagnosed before age 50, considered to be a young onset. The disease is not only physically debilitating, but also inflicts the person with bouts of anxiety and depression, apathy, cognitive issues and sleep disorders. Currently there are over 10,000 Albertans living with Parkinson’s disease diagnosis. Of those, there are thousands more who love and care for them, all of whom benefit from the generosity and support given by fellow community members. While there is no apparent cause or cure for the disease; generous donations and building an awareness helps those suffering from the disease and those giving of their time and dedication to help them hope. Parkinson Association of Alberta is a not-for-profit organization that has been helping to make life better for Albertans suffering and assisting those who suffer, better for over 40 years. All of the moneys raised is used to fund the best services, resources and research to benefit Albertans and provide support services, programming, education, advocacy and funds for research. For more information on Parkinson’s disease visit the website ad info@ parkinsonassociation.ca or telephone toll free at 1-800-561-1911.

Man Van to roll into Camrose By Murray Green

The Man Van will be in Camrose offering free baseline PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood tests to men between the ages of 40 and 80. The clinic will be at the Norsemen Inn, 6505-48 Avenue on Thursday, April 4 between 3 and 6 p.m. The PSA test is a simple blood test that helps in the early detection of prostate cancer. PSA is a protein produced by the prostate and released in small amounts to the bloodstream. The amount of PSA in the bloodstream can often predict a man’s risk of prostate cancer.

There are often no early warning signs of prostate cancer and early detection saves lives. Balancing work, family and a social life keeps men busy. Prostate health is not always top-of-mind. It can be very difficult for men to fit regular doctor visits into their schedules. That is why the Prostate Cancer Centre offers the services of the Man Van to the community. No appointment is necessary and all men between the ages of 40 and 80 are encouraged to stop by and receive their free and confidential baseline PSA test in the comfort of the motor home.

Prostate cancer is the leading cancer in Albertan men. One man in seven will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime. Approximately 2,600 men will be diagnosed annually with prostate cancer and eight men will die from it every week. The Prostate Cancer Centre is a non-profit organization established in 1999 and focused on the early detection and treatment of prostate cancer and prostate related disease. MP Sorenson not running again Submitted

Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parliament for Battle River-Crowfoot (formerly

Crowfoot), announces his decision not to run in the 2019 federal election. “Six elections, 19 great

years and various positions with the Official Opposition and government. Being a Member of Parliament has been the honour of my working life. All of it is thanks to the tremendous support of the amazing constituents, the many volunteers on all of my campaigns and the

tireless dedication and sage advice of you, my board of directors and executive,” Sorenson told his supporters. “But, it is time to go. It is time to spend more time with my family who have so selflessly and wholeheartedly stood by my side throughout this long and demanding journey.”

Sorenson stressed the importance of his Christian faith. “Politicians are pulled in all different directions, but my faith, and the hope that it offers, has been at the heart of staying principled, serving with respect and working hard every day.”

The annual Camerata Coffeehouse concert is back. Enjoy an evening of eclectic song with Camrose Camerata, featuring the choir as well as Camerata members in solos, duets and small ensembles, all served with coffee and treats. Join Camerata on Saturday, April 6, at 7 p.m. at the Messiah Lutheran Church Hall. “The theme for this coffeehouse concert is Dark: Songs of Solemn Beauty and Quirky Wit, exploring music of the night, mourning, and other dark subject matter,” said director Joy-Anne Murphy. “Where can a theme like ‘Dark’ take you? Dark and whimsical humour, themes of death, the afterlife, the night sky, sleep and unrequited love all surface in our explorations. The result is anything but sombre, as the music includes spirituals and folk songs, a touch of jazz, classic and contemporary art songs from quiet energy to fiery exuberance.” Featured guest is Steve Dahl, on electric guitar, who will be joining the choir for its rendition of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Tickets are available from members by calling 780-672-3372 and at the door. Jordan Leden and the Bailey Buckaroos will be performing at the Bailey Theatre on April 28 at 2 p.m.

She is the author of bestselling Bible studies, including Discerning the Voice of God, The Armor of God, Gideon and Jonah, as well

as the author of many books, including Fervent and the New York Times best-seller The Resolution for Women. January 16, 1931 ~ March 24, 2019 Mom was born on January 16, 1931 in St. Boniface, Manitoba, to Jacob and Sophie Noga; she was the eldest of four children. She grew up in Mine Centre, Ontario, and completed her schooling (completing Grade 8) by way of a weekly train that passed through town leaving assignments to be completed and reviewed the following week. At the age of 16 years, Mom moved to Winnipeg and lived with her aunt and uncle while completing her hairdresser training. It was in Winnipeg that Mom met the love of her life, our dad, and together they moved to Edmonton where they were married on July 8, 1950. While in Edmonton, the first two of their four children were born and, on April 1, 1953, they moved to Camrose where they completed their family with two more girls. Mom took pride in keeping her yard and flower gardens in a perfect state and looked forward to visiting the local greenhouses each year to purchase her bedding plants. She was a longtime member of the United Church and she enjoyed volunteering at the tuck shop at St. Mary’s Hospital and Rosehaven. She loved square dancing, bowling, long walks, camping, fishing, spending time with family and friends and travelling within Canada and to warmer climates. After the passing of Dad on February 16, 1980, Mom remained in the new home they had just completed until moving into Lakeside Village in January 2001. There, she enjoyed numerous long walks around the lake and friendships she made in her new residence. She then moved into Deer Meadows in February 2014, followed by her move to Bethany Meadows – Oak Cottage, where she resided until her passing. Mom will be remembered as a loyal friend, a loving mother and a special Grandma and Great-Grandma by her children Larry (Simone), Charmaine (Ken) and Brenda (Jim); grandchildren Dallas (Lindsey), Darcey (Jason), Christopher (Kim), Drew (Michelle), Ryan (Carlynn), Niki (Dan), Haley (Brad), Dusty (Marissa) and Kim; in addition to sixteen great-grandchildren with two more arriving in June. Mom is also survived by her sister Lucy; son-in-law Ken; sister-in-laws Donna and Joan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by our loving dad; daughter Beverley; parents Sophie and Jacob; brothers Roy and Eddie; and brother-inlaw Danny. Mom will live on eternally in our hearts and memories – we will never forget her! I always said that Mom had nine lives; she was a trooper to the end. Our family is forever grateful that Mom was able to die peacefully in her home at Bethany Meadows because of the caring and compassionate staff, and we wish to thank each of them. A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at Camrose United Church. Memorial donations may be made to Bethany Meadows – Recreation.

Vernon Boese Vernon Boese was born to John and Mary Reimer Boese on July 2, 1927 at Swalwell, AB. He passed peacefully away at St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose, AB, on March 22, 2019, reaching the age of 91 years, with family by his side. Dad grew up near Linden, AB and received his schooling in a small, one-room school. As a young married man, he was one of the pioneers of the new congregation at Edberg, AB, which was home to him for the rest of his life. At the age of 12, Dad was born again and was baptized a year later by Min. Jake Barkman. He was married on July 19, 1952, to Marion Wiebe, who passed away after seven short years. They were blessed with two sons. After a span of nearly five years, he married Lillian Goossen. This union added two more sons and a daughter. After nearly forty-six years together and following a lengthy illness, his wife was taken from his side, leaving him lonely again. Dad was the last of his immediate family. He leaves behind four sons Leroy and Gwen, Tatamagouche, NS, John and Alice, Elkton, VA, Ross and Eileen, Meeting Creek, AB, and Darwin, Edberg, AB; one daughter Lori and partner Cory Stuart, Camrose; twelve grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; and several in-laws. He was predeceased by his parents, two wives, twin infant sons, one brother, three sisters and numerous in-laws. His was a life of caregiving. His own father passed away in a tragic accident when Dad was a young boy. As the oldest son, he had to assume responsibility as the family breadwinner at an early age, operating the family farm together with his mother. His first wife was of fragile health, needing extra care and, upon passing, she left Dad with two boys, aged five and two. Dad cared for us faithfully, persevering against all odds to keep us with him. He had a small mixed farm and was never well to do during those years, but he had a way of making us not notice. Later, his wife suffered with Alzheimer’s disease for thirteen years and, again, Dad faithfully cared for her till the very last. Nearing the end, he faced the prospect of needing care himself, but this he found very hard to accept. The Lord spared him from this, taking him from this world after a brief hospitalization. Dad often lamented the fact that he had never spent time in a mission or done anything special for the Church. Yet, he was always active on the home front, often volunteering to open services with encouraging words and a prayer. Many were the children who found the Bible stories come alive when he was their Sunday School or Summer Bible School teacher. He was faithful in that which was least. Funeral services were held on March 26, 2019, at Edberg Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. Interment was held at Edberg Lakeview Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sunsetltd.ca.

Nellie “Evelyn” Jamieson Nellie “Evelyn” Jamieson of Camrose, AB, formerly of Ontario, passed away on March 2, 2019 at the age of 97 years. She is survived by her son James. Nellie was predeceased by her husband Kenneth and her daughter Sandra. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 6, 2019 in the Weber’s Mount Pleasant Funeral Chapel, Camrose, AB. Memorial donations may be made to The Bethany Group.

Serving your community for over 110 years

Andrew Roderick Cameron October 29, 1927 ~ March 26, 2019 “The idea is to die young, as late as possible” and after 91 years, ANDREW R. CAMERON, formerly of Sedgewick, did just that. On March 26, 2019, Andy left us suddenly, but not before touching the lives and hearts of many with his smiling eyes and laughter, sharing a few interesting stories along the way. He believed interaction with family, friends and neighbours is what life is all about. He was the youngest and last living descendent of Andrew A. and Mary E. Cameron, and was born on the homestead south of Sedgewick, where he spent most of his life. In 1972, he married Melba and became an instant father of two teenage girls, giving freely the greatest gift … love. His love for all, including animals, particularly horses, was apparent in everything he did. It has been said, “The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man.” His interests were very broad outside of farming and livestock; they included horse racing, veterinary work as well as woodworking. He was also an active member in the United Church, his community and politics. Later in life, he took up writing and published three books. In one, he writes, “ It is your turn” encouraging others to write some family history, saying, “Your grandchildren may not be interested now, but in the future, after you have died, they may wish they had asked you about some things.” Andy will be forever loved and remembered by his wife Melba; two daughters Laurie (Barry) Nordstrom and Kathryn (Gord) Lohr; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many very special nieces and nephews. The family would to thank the caring staff and the Seasons retirement community. “Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, and the memories that were made no one can steal”. A Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday April 3, 2019 from Burgar Memorial Chapel in Camrose. Litwin found his Beaumont convertible By Murray Green

It didn’t take long for Don Litwin to find the vehicle he wanted. He stumbled upon a 1966 Beaumont twodoor convertible that suited him just fine. “I bought this car four years ago and I’ve done some work on it. I updated the electronic ignition, installed a better starter and a few other upgrades. This model didn’t have electronic ignition, it was an option, so I added it,” shared Don. The mid-size car came with various body styles such as four-door sedan, two-door sedan, two-door hardtop, four-door hardtop, two-door convertible and a four-door station wagon. “My wife and I were interested in a vehicle (especially myself) and, because of my age, I didn’t want to start from scratch. I wanted something that was drivable now, a nice car, and then do some upgrades on it to make it my car,” explained Don. “My idea was to keep improving it along the way.” The Beaumont was related to the Chevrolet Chevelle and Pontiac Tempest, but was built in Oshawa. “I was always interested in a convertible and when this Beaumont came available four years ago, I knew it was a local (Tofield) car, I went for it. I wanted to stay in the Chevrolet (General Motors) line. This Beaumont is strictly Canadian and

FUN FACTS

The cars sported an emblem based on Pontiac’s arrowhead with two red maple leaves or fleur-de-lis added. They featured the same power plants as the Chevrolet Chevelle. The Sport Deluxe (SD) models were equivalent to the Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport trim level, and featured optional bucket seats and centre console, as well as SD body striping and trim. The SD396 models are the most desirable Beaumonts. Only 451 were built in 1967, but most succumbed to the harsh Canadian winter climate, which makes them significantly more rare than equivalent Chevelles and desirable to some collectors. The SD was actually the Sports Option package that was available on the Beaumont Custom Sport Coupe and convertible, rather than its own series early. Starting in December the model 738 Sport Deluxe model was separate, no longer the A51 Sport Option. In addition to the SD series, the Beaumont line included base, custom and deluxe lines. A convertible was available. Other body styles were identical to those offered on the Chevelle for the given year, including a very rare four-door hardtop offered from 1966 to 1969. Starting in 1970, GM Canada discontinued the Beaumont in favour of both Chevrolet Chevelle and Pontiac LeMans.

I like to go to the local shows like Tofield and Round Hill,” added Don. “In 2017, I won my class in Tofield, so that was nice.” Transmission options were a two-speed automatic, three-speed automatic, three-speed manual or a four-speed manual. Beaumont was a make of intermediate-sized automobiles, produced by General Motors of Canada from 1966 to 1969. These cars were based on the Chevrolet Chevelle, but the line had its own logo and nameplate and was not marketed in the United States. Its logo consisted of an arrow, similar to that of Pontiac, but with a maple leaf to signify its dual heritage. From 1966, the Acadian name was only used for the Nova-based car and

Beaumont became a standalone marque, still sold by Pontiac-Buick dealers. The interiors used the dash panel from the (United States Pontiac Tempest/LeMans/ GTO series. Exterior sheet

Mud bogging – serious concern By Lori Larsen

Mud bogging impacts the business and livelihood of a farmer the same way as shoplifting or vandalism affects an urban business. It would be equivalent to a person walking into a china shop and deliberately breaking the merchandise just for fun. With spring just around the corner, landowners in the rural areas are preparing fields for seeding and other farming operations. The heavy snowpack and the possibility of a wet spring creates muddy conditions in the fields and any unwarranted traffic on the fields can cause extensive damage and result in costly losses to the landowners. While it seems many people consider trespassing and mud bogging on private land to be harmless, it is anything but to the landowners, and in fact is a serious offence. In accordance to the Petty Trespass Act (Alberta Statute) Section 2 (1) Every person who (a) without the permission of the owner or occupier of land enters on land when entry is prohibited under section 2.1, or (b) does not leave land immediately after he or she is directed to do so by the owner or occupier of the land, or a person authorized by the owner or occupier, is guilty of an offence. Under that Act, any person who is found guilty of the offence outlined in Section (1) despite whether damage has been caused or not as a result of the trespassing can be liable to a fine not exceeding $2,000 for a first offence, for second or subsequent offences, in relation to the same land a fine not exceeding $5,000. Further to the Trespass Act Section 2.1 (1), entry on land may be prohibited by notice to that effect, and entry is prohibited without any notice on land that is a lawn, garden or land that is under cultivation; land that is surrounded by a fence, a natural boundary or a combination of a fence and a natural boundary, or land that is enclosed in a manner that indicates the owner’s or occupier’s intention to keep persons off the land or to keep animals on the land. The Act describes notice to be given either orally or in writing or by visibly displaying sign boards or posters at all places where normal access is obtained to the land, at all fence corners or if there

Life is better in the Quick Lane.TM is no fence, at each corner of the land. “Trespassing within Camrose County is a provincial offence; therefore, County Peace Officers enforce this legislation under the Petty Trespass Act,” noted Camrose County Protective Services manager/sergeant Mike Kuzio. Kuzio went on to explain that it is an offence to operate offhighway vehicles (OHV’s) on private property without the owner’s permission. OHV’s are classified

as snowmobiles, quads and dirt bikes. “The land does not have to be posted by the owner advising “No Trespassing”,” added Kuzio. “If you do not have permission, orally or in writing, you do not have permission.” As per Camrose County’s Off Highway Vehicles Bylaw #1040, Camrose County permits the use of OHV’s on gravel roads (local roads) providing the OHV’s are properly registered, insured and they are abiding by the rules

of the road. OHV are not permitted on one, two and three digit highways; this includes the ditches, as the ditches are considered part of the highway. “Enforcing trespassers is a difficult task for law enforcement officers, so we always ask any person who witnesses this type of offence to provide any information they can to law enforcement. It is all beneficial.” Information could include license plate numbers, colour and make of the OHV, description of

person(s), time and date of occurrence. “Another option land owners have begun to do is installing video cameras or trail CAMS on their properties,” said Kuzio. “These videos make excellent evidence in court proceedings.” Kuzio stated that the provincial charge carries a fine of $287. Respecting landowners rights to prohibit access to their land is not only lawful, but the ethical thing to do as well. Continued on page 22

If a farmer is practicing zero tillage, they simply can not seed a field which has been rutted up by quads, a side-by-side or any motorized vehicles. Extensive tillage is required to reduce the compaction in the ruts and to level the field before it can be seeded. This additional cultivation adds hundreds of dollars of expense because of equipment and fuel costs and added expenses due to lost time. Futhermore, after such cultivation, a no till farmer is no longer eligible for carbon credit payments on land that has been cultivated; thereby actual revenue has been stolen from the farm operation. Clean it up By Lori Larsen

A long cold winter, such as we just experienced, puts a lot of stress on our vehicles both on the operating systems and the body. It’s time to treat your major investment to a little pampering by giving it a good spring cleaning. Begin by parking your vehicle inside or under a protected area, avoiding direct sunlight or overt heat that may cause soapy residue to be left on your vehicle. Collect the necessary supplies and tools to complete the job including: two buckets of water, one for wetting your cleaning cloth and one for rinsing, clean rags preferably of softer natural material or cloths or mitts designed specifically for cleaning vehicles, a vacuum with attachments, glass cleaner, trash bag, upholstery cleaner, a soft bristled toothbrush for those hard to get areas and an approved vehicle wax. Never use dishwasher, laundry detergent, hand soap or body washes for your vehicles as these products could contain harsh chemicals that could strip your vehicle’s wax and paint. Rinse your vehicle first with a hose to remove any dust particles and built up of dirt and grime. Once the vehicle is completely rinsed, use the soapy sponge/mitt or cloth to wash the vehicle beginning from the top and working your way to the bottom, working on only one section at a time. Remember to rinse your sponge/mitt or cloth often to avoid spreading dust or dirt over other surfaces and to remove buildup in your cleaning sponge/ mitt or cloth. Dry each section as you go with another clean cloth or synthetic chamois, making sure to shake out the cloth frequently. Be sure to dry inside the door frames and trunk area around the seals ensuring that all rubber is completely dry. Excess water can cause the rubber seals to deteriorate quicker and in colder temperatures can cause doors and trunks to freeze shut. A third bucket of water can be used to clean the tires of your vehicle using a cleaner specially designed for safe use on wheel surfaces. Caustic cleaners containing acids and harsh household soaps can ruin the finish on your wheels. Once you have washed the wheels rinse them thoroughly until all dirt and debris is removed, then dry the wheel using a soft clean cloth.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Use clean cloths or special mitts to clean your vehicle.

Don’t forget the inside. Begin by removing the floor mats and throwing away trash. Vacuum the interior and use a foam cleanser to

clean the carpet and upholstery. If conditions are appropriate for drying floor mats, spray them down and let

them hang dry. For carpeted matts vacuum them as well. Use an approved interior vehicle cleaner to shine up dashes and other parts. Spray the cleaner directly onto your cleaning cloth or mitt to avoid spraying glass. Use a vehicle glass cleaner to shine the windows both on the inside and outside of your vehicle. Waxing your vehicle will protect the paint from fading, discolouring and oxidation (sun damage) and also provides a protective layer. Waxing is recommended every three months.

Always use a good quality wax designed specifically for vehicles and clean towels, sponges and polishing pads. Using a thin layer of wax, auto professionals suggest using front-to-back motions on top panels (hood, roof, trunk), and top-to-bottom motions for side panels. After applying the wax, use microfibre cloths or towels to wipe up excess wax and buff at the same time. Cleaning your car frequently will not only make it look better, it will extend its life.

Vinnell named to all-star team

By Murray Green Camrose Kodiaks defenceman Zach Vinnell was named to the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) south division All-League Team for the 2018-19 season. The individuals are selected to the respective teams through a voting process completed by the general managers and coaches of the AJHL. Former Kodiak goalie Luke Lush of the Drayton Valley Thunder made the north team. Eight players on the 2018-19 All-League teams have secured a commitment to a college or university including Vinnell. The Alberta Junior Hockey League selected its first All-League and All-Rookie teams in 1997. Over the past 20 years, some of the most notable AJHL alumni have filled these rosters including Joe Colborne and Mason Raymond of the Kodiaks. Bear facts The Grant MacEwan Griffins won the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference with eight former Kodiaks on the roster. Ryan McKinnon, Ryan Hartman, Nic Correale, Cam Gotaas, Brett Njaa, Tyler Morrison, Stefan Danielson and Matt Wasylenko all suited up for Camrose in the past.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.
