Trailer Repairs and Hitch Installations
Opening doors By Lori Larsen
They are more than just points of ingress or egress that connect the interior of your home to the exterior, your home’s doors are also focal points that contribute to its curb appeal. For those reasons selecting the best options to fit your lifestyle, taste and budget is important. Doors
When considering doors for your home there are many factors to consider including materials and durability, safety and curb appeal. There are a variety of choices when it comes to the material used for doors. A popular, but sometimes more expensive choice, is wood. Wood has a classic appearance ranging in types of wood, stain and detailing. However, wood doors are more susceptible to weather conditions that may cause cracking or warping. Some less expensive options to wood doors are f iberglass or steel. In all instances, when selecting the type of door, be sure to choose doors that are well insulated. Losing heat and gaining cold through a poorly insulated door can be costly. Safety should be a number one priority when it comes to choosing your doors. The hardware, locking mechanisms and hinges should be designed for ultimate security against intrusion. Today’s doors are more than just a vessel to the outside world, they are also the first thing someone sees and the passage of greeting for guests. With that in mind, design and appearance is a key factor in choosing a door. Overhead Doors
Remembering your garage as part of the overall look and security of your home is also important. “Choosing an overhead door should be done with thought and consideration, as they come in many sizes, colors and styles,” said Camrose Glass & Overhead Doors overhead door specialist, Jason Swain. “There are lots of options to choose from that include insulation value, types of windows, hardware and the type of operator. “It is also vital to remember that overhead doors are the largest moving object in your household and should be repaired and maintained by a professional on a yearly basis. Finally, regular upkeep and Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster repair will keep your doors lookMike Pothier, of Camrose Overhead Door & Glass, works ing their best and lasting their on an overhead garage door. longest.

Wash your windows. Clean the frames and glass, and don’t forget to give the screens a scrub as well. You should also inspect the caulking around your windows and doors. If there are any cracks, apply new caulking. Get your deck ready. Clean your patio or deck and check for loose boards or anything else that looks like it needs to be fixed. Make repairs, then sand and seal wood surfaces. Examine exterior surfaces. Inspect your siding for damage and ensure your foundation is free of cracks that might have formed over the winter. If you see any peeling paint on your shutters or window frames, make plans to have them painted. Inspect your barbe cue. Look out for signs of damage. Clear off Marius Nanu recommends a cedar deck. spider webs, clean the grill and make sure animals haven’t nibbled on the gas line. Once you’re done with the above, it’s time to set up your outdoor furniture. Give chairs, tables and loungers a good cleaning, then sit back, relax and enjoy soaking up the sun. Wood decks are timeless backyard addi tions, but they aren’t maintenance free. “The ideal exterior wood for decks is a western red cedar. It is a beautiful red-brown colour that is rot resistant. I highly recommend that you stain it right away to protect it from the elements. If you don’t, it will turn silver. You want to keep the moisture out to make your deck last longer,” explained Marius Nanu, owner of Windsor Plywood in Camrose. “A stained cedar deck is appealing and it will look fresh for sev eral years,” added Nanu. When not properly taken care of, they’re prone to rotting. Here’s how to take care of your wood deck. Inspect it. Every spring, take time to look your deck over. Examine all the components to make sure there’s no damage. If you come across anything, fix it before it gets worse. Clean it. Regularly sweep debris off your deck. Scrub it with soap and water once a year. If you’d rather use a pressure washer, be careful: highly pressurized water can gouge holes in wood. Using a sweeping motion, always keep the washer moving. Sand and seal it. Every two or three years, sand your patio and apply a sealant. This will prevent the wood from absorbing moisture. You can hire a professional to do this, or you can set aside a weekend and do the job yourself.

Ready, set, plant By Lori Larsen
A quick and fairly easy way to spruce up the curb appeal of your home in the warm months is to add some texture and colour with flowers, shrubs and trees. When designing and deciding landscaping for curb appeal consider the size and style of your home it is, after all, going to be the biggest item to work around. Planting a small patch of tiny flowers will simply be swallowed against a large home; likewise, large gangly shrubs and trees can make your home disappear. Decide on a scheme that suits the style of your home. Country homes are well suited to English gardens with plenty of pretty flowers, while a more stately home would pair well with manicured shrubs and low key foliage. Overplanted and overgrown yards can look messy and unkept. Maintain your visual appeal with regular cutting, trimming, deadheading and overall tidying. “The first consideration for planting should always be whether the area is sun or shade,” added Green Valley Gardens owner, Cindy Laskosky. “For perennials, trees, shrubs, look for Zone 3 items as they will be hardy for our area.” Two tips to a clean and professional landscaping is to plant according to height and season. Taller plants, trees and shrubs should be at the back, preferably closer to the structure for support, then heights should gradually move lower towards the front SHI 2019 – Page 22
to eventual ground cover plants. Symmetry is far more pleasing to the eye than a scattered appearance. “Another tip, when planting, is to place plants on pots or flower beds before planting, to see how they are going to look. Get a good visual so you don’t have to repot or replant later.” Planters and hanging baskets are an easy way to add colour and beauty to your property and come in a plethora of styles, colours and variety of plants. “When planting in containers, be sure to have plants that are the appropriate size for that container,” added Cindy. “Check plant tags to determine mature height and width.” It is also important to maintain planters’ upkeep with regular watering, feeding and pruning. Outdoor lighting and accessories are a wonderful way to add even more interest to your landscape. Your local garden centres offer an abundance of products to Cindy Laskosky, owner of spruce up your property. Be sure Green Valley Gardens, sugto check them out and, when in gests some colourful plantdoubt, seek their advice. ers for adding curb appeal.

De-cluttering adds joy By Lori Larsen
Research has proven that clutter can bring on stress and for some people becomes so overwhelming, it can actually cause health issues. Spring brings the hope of new life and with that comes opportunities to scale down our homes, offices and lives by sorting, organizing and cleaning up our spaces. Start the declutter

Your #1 option in waste removal SHI 2019 – Page 30
The following are a few tips on how to declutter your space. Begin by setting a date and schedule, preferably on a day that the weather is less than pleasant, so you are less tempted to forego the cleaning to enjoy the outdoors. Visualize what you would like your space to look like, perhaps post pictures of similar spaces for encouragement. “Generally speaking, you want your space to feel relaxing and inviting and bring you joy when you walk into it,” said Hauser Home Hardware Building Centre, lighting specialist Kiana Kulyk. Gather supplies such as clean rags and dusting cloths, buckets for warm soapy water and rinsing water, scrub brushes, garbage bags for actual trash and boxes or bags for donation items, basket for items to be put in a different room, vacuum, broom and dust pan. Begin by decluttering and by that, actually getting rid of items you no longer require (not just moving them to a new location in the home, garage, shed). “Begin with items that no longer bring you joy or that do not give you the “wow” factor any more,” suggested Kiana. Clean out and declutter closets, pantries, storage rooms, junk drawers (the name itself implies useslessness), and other areas where things tend to accumulate.
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Kiana Kulyk, lighting specialist for Hauser Home Hardware offers tips on how to get your home organized.
“Make it easy on yourself by starting in one corner of the room and go foot by foot. Don’t take everything and make a big pile on the floor then go through it that way–you will overwhelm yourself and your decluttering won’t be as effective.” When spring cleaning think green and consider what can be recycled, repurposed, reused or removed. One person’s throw away is another’s treasure. Investigate options in the community for donating items such as Habitat for Humanity Restore or Centra Cam’s Outlet Store. Kiana suggested a number of options for storage and organizers, including moveable shelving, bins and baskets and coat and shoe racks. Finally reward yourself. If you had a garage sale and made some extra cash treat yourself to a spa or golf day, or little vacation or some other activity that makes memories not messes.

Siding protects your home from elements By Murray Green Siding is one of the most important parts of your home’s exterior. Not only does it protect the structure from the elements, it also showcases your house’s style. While you may wish your siding would last forever, it will eventually need to be replaced. Here are a few signs you need new siding. Visible damage. Numerous things can damage siding including dirt, the weather and moisture. If only a few panels are affected, you might be able to replace them. But if the damage is widespread, you’ll need to Jan Nowakowski of replace the whole thing. Adamson Exteriors Peeling paint indoors. If you have water damage on your interior walls, it might mean that your siding is no longer effectively keeping moisture out of your home. Your bills have increased. “Siding plays a big part in insulating your home. If you notice a drastic change in your bills, your siding may have an air leak. In this scenario, your heating and cooling system works extra hard to regulate your home’s temperature, which SHI 2019 – Page 36
ultimately results in costlier utility bills,” said Jan Nowakowski, of Adamson Exteriors. Mould or mildew. Fungus or mould in or near the seams of your siding may indicate water infiltration. It looks faded and old. Replacing your siding can drastically increase your home’s curb appeal. Among home renovations, new siding has one of the highest returns on investment. When it’s time to replace your siding, be sure to take action sooner rather than later. The longer you wait, the more likely it becomes that other parts of your home will get damaged as a result of having deteriorated siding. Mixing siding materials is a popular trend that adds interest. In some instances that may mean adding a little high end accents such as rock or brick, while in other examples it could simply mean a combination of complimentary colours. Sustainability and eco-friendliness are playing a big role in the trends of siding. While it is not necessarily a new trend, durability and low maintenance are still very much in the forefront when it comes to choosing a siding. “Your home’s siding should be cleaned thoroughly at least twice a year by hand with a cloth, not with a pressure washer because then you can get water trapped behind it. “When choosing a business to install or replace your siding, eavestroughs, fascia, soffits, cladding and stone work, make sure you go with someone that you can trust. We are a Camrose company that has been locally owned for the past 15 years,” said Nowakowski.

A variety of tones in wood colour are available to choose from to suit any taste. With busy schedules people want to spend down time together enjoying activities, working on hobbies and visiting with family and friends, and not hours maintaining their home. “Lower maintenance is important. With a lighter floor and higher variation, you will notice the everyday wear and tear of a busy lifestyle a lot less,” noted Krystle. Vinyl plank is the most popular flooring choice and is very versatile, whether used in homes or for commercial spaces, the vinyl flooring provides durability and a wide style range. Newer to the market is the SPC (Stone Polymer Composite) vinyl plank. The addition of a stone component to this product creates a denser core. “The advantage of this product is that it will be more dent resistant and it will react less to extreme temperature changes,” explained Krystle. “This product would perform well in a cabin Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster setting where the temperatures Nufloors Camrose interior vary greatly.” design technologist Krystle Many people are leaning toMayer, left, and flooring wards more minimal, natural consultant Dawn Buttner are versed in new flooring options. looks in their homes that still take into account style and fashInterior design technologist ion.
