Back in the mid to late ’70s, Ron Pederson was an active 4-H member. His own children followed in his footsteps, learning the value of community engagement and communications, sustainable agriculture and food security and a host of other skills which have been highly instrumental in preparing them for chosen careers and life itself.

The Camrose District 4-H Beef Interclub Show & Sale takes place on Monday, June 3 and Tuesday, June 4 at the CRE. It is this particular 4-H program which has been so powerful for Ron Pederson and family. So much so that to this day, he continues to give back to the local 4-H movement. As dozens of corporate buyers attend to bid on and buy one of the prized beef steers as a way to support the great work of local 4-H’ers and their families, Ron Pederson will be at the microphone as the event auctioneer – entertaining the crowd and hoping to maximize the value of every steer that goes through the ring. This year will be his 25th year of doing just that, without payment expected or received. A Booster hats off to Ron for this impressive commitment! For information on how you can support this show and sale or the bidding process, call Josh Burnstad at 780.608.6668.

Science says take lots of breaks-really

This just in. If you want to learn something new, don’t study long and hard. I’m not making that up. If you happen to be a student of anything at all–whether it’s improving your golf score, learning to play guitar or figuring out how to use your new electronic gadget–this might interest you. New research suggests what may be a surprising approach to learning something new: Take many breaks, early and often. Research result: rest is as important as practice “Everyone thinks you need to ‘practice, practice, practice’ when learning something new,” says Leonardo G. Cohen, M.D., Ph.D. He is a senior investigator at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and also a senior author of a paper published in the journal Current Biology April 2019 issue. The paper reports a conclusion that surprised the researchers and may surprise you too. Dr. Cohen says, “We found that resting, early and often, may be just as critical to learning as practice.” The study was led by Marlene Bönstrup, M.D. Like many scientists, she held the belief that our brains need long periods of rest, such as a good night’s sleep, to strengthen the memories formed while practicing a newly learned skill. But after looking at brain waves recorded from healthy volunteers in learning and memory experiments, she started to question that idea. At first results seemed typical until…in the study, healthy right-handed volunteers sat at in front of a computer screen wearing a brain scanning cap that recorded the activity in their brain. They were shown numbers on the screen and asked to type the numbers as many times as possible with their left hands for 10 seconds. Then they took a 10 second break. They repeated the trial cycle of alternating practice and rest 35 more times. The speed at which volunteers correctly typed the numbers improved dramatically during the first few trials. Then it leveled off around the 11th cycle–the expected results. However, when Dr. Bönstrup looked at the volunteers’ brain wave patterns she noticed something interesting…an unexpected pattern emerged “I noticed that participants’ brain waves seemed to change much more during the rest periods than during the typing sessions,” said Dr. Bönstrup. “This gave me the idea to look much more closely for when learning was actually happening.” By re-analyzing the data, she and her colleagues made two key findings. 1. The volunteers’ performance improved during the short rests, and not during typing. The improvements made during the rest periods added up to the overall gains the volunteers made that day. 2. By looking at the brain waves, Dr. Bönstrup found activity patterns that suggested the volunteers’ brains were consolidating, or solidifying, memories during the rest periods. They found that the changes in the size of brain waves, called beta rhythms, correlated with the improvements the volunteers made during the rests. Other studies confirm the pattern. When you begin to pick up a new skill or learn anything new, it’s easy to want to binge-learn. But spreading out learning with breaks between sessions is a better approach to learning. It’s how our brains are wired. Journalist researcher David Cox said, “Breaks are important to minimize interference. When your hippocampus is forced to store many new (and often similar) patterns in a short space of time, it can get them jumbled up.” Remember when you thought you had something nailed but next day you couldn’t remember? That’s what happened. Too much too fast scrambles your brain. In summary…and just in time for students studying for final exams in the next month: When you’re learning something new, take short breaks early and often. Your brain will consolidate and you’ll learn better and faster. Anything that gives me a reason to take a break is happy news. What’s delicious about this is, it’s science. Oh right. I do have to remember the “short intense times of learning”–something to take a break from. ***

I’d love to hear from you! If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

You might have heard faced by Alberta were not the

responsibility of the previous government. The downturn of the economy in Alberta was the result of the fall in the world oil price. The government did what it could by controlling production. During the campaign every effort was made to fix responsibility onto the provincial government as if it was its policy to cause unemployment. The previous government built and renovated schools and hospitals. This by providing employment, made unemployment less and put the money paid out of wages and supplies into the economy with positive results. This program was needed because Conservative governments had left an infrastructure deficit. The new government says it plans to reduce corporate income tax so companies will invest in employment creating enterprises. Experience in “Trumpland” shows that is not true. Their companies used the money from reduced taxes to buy back shares to further concentrate control and to increase dividends. Investment in production increases did not happen and will not in Alberta. What will happen is the provincial government will receive up to $1 billion less in revenue... hence cuts, cuts in services, larger class sizes, longer waits in health care. There is a deficit in Alberta finances. That deficit can be made less by increasing revenue or reduction expenses. Mr. Kenney is reducing revenue. This will increase, not decrease the deficit so expenses will be reduced by cutting service. Look at Ontario where a government was replaced without thought as to the results. The same has happened in Alberta. Ron Williams, Camrose

CAMROSE DUGGAN MALL 780-673-9786 DRAYTON VALLEY 5125-51 STREET 780-515-8696 Young rural writers showcase talent By Lori Larsen

One might say a starving artist/writer is a successful artist/writer that has yet to be discovered; however, the road to discovery is a long and hard one. Founder and editorin-chief of the Wheat and Laurel young writers initiative and magazine, Amielle Christopherson, took it upon herself to ensure that young rural writers, specifically of Camrose and area, not only had a venue to expose their writing talents, but were also remunerated for their work. “The idea for Wheat and Laurel began in March 2018 after one of my (then Augustana) English professors Dr. Erin Weinberg told me about a funding

opportunity through Her-izone, a group of women who provide funding to women from small communities who are making a global impact,” said Christopherson. Christopherson put forward an application for the funding with the idea of a writing journal just for rural teens that would offer them an outlet for their writing, professional feedback and small, albeit significant, compensation for their work. Although unsuccessful in obtaining that particular grant, Christopherson wasn’t discouraged and felt this was an important initiative so explored other avenues of funding.

Accompanied by letters of recommendation from the City of Camrose (Council) and individuals in the community, she was successful in receiving funds from the Camrose Arts Council and Rotary Club of Camrose Daybreak. “The funds were used to publish the magazine, but I also wanted to make sure that people who were involved in this (writers, editors) were compensated for their time,” noted Christopherson, who added that writers who are just starting out tend to be somewhat intimidated about submitting work, worried they cannot compete with the big players. Saving our planet one step at a time By Lori Larsen

It is the only one we are going to have, this planet, and bringing about awareness on protecting and conserving it, is what World Environment Day, Wednesday, June 5 is all about. Run by the United Nations, World Environment Day (WED) is aimed at bringing to light the importance of our environment and specific environmental issues. WED was established in 1972 with the first day held in 1974 and involved 143 countries taking part around the world. The day is intended to get people thinking about the impact we have on pollution, global warming, sustainable food production and the protection of wildlife. Locally many businesses and organizations are doing their part in building awareness and decreasing negative impact on the environment and our natural resources. Battle River Watershed Alliance have implemented programs targeting our upcoming citizens, such as the Caring for Our Watersheds Contest open to students in Grades 7 to 12 encouraging them to develop and share ideas on how to improve their watersheds.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Battle River Watershed Alliance planning coordinator, Sarah Skinner spoke about the importance of maintaining the wellbeing of our natural resources during the Hike for Hospice event held on May 6 hosted by Battle River Watershed Alliance and Hospice Society of Camrose and District.

“Water is life,” noted Battle River Watershed Alliance education and outreach coordinator Nathalie Olson. “We need a safe and reliable water supply for our communities, for our economy, and for the natural environment. The Battle River Watershed Alliance and our members including businesses, government, landowners, and residents are working to ensure our land and water stay clean and healthy.”

To learn more about becoming a member visit the website at www.battleriverwatershed.ca. Fishing and hunting, recreational activities regulated by federal and provincial legislation, are enjoyed by many, but without the dedication of those charged with enforcing the laws, investigating abuses to wildlife and land and researching ways to sustain our natural resources, the threat of losing them is real.

Like any work, a person should be compensated and while the exposure is good, artists will eventually die from exposure. “They still have to pay the bills.” With funding in hand, Christopherson then created an editorial board consisting of Dr. Craig Peterson (Writing Centre director and continuing lecturer at University of Alberta Augustana Campus), Callium Wilson (Augustana English Grad 2018) and Christopherson, herself with a background in photojournalism. The word was spread that they were looking for submissions to the magazine and soon writers were sending in their pieces for feedback and consideration in the first publication. “For the first issue, there were 11 writers who submitted and we published seven of them,” said Christopherson. “All of them received feedback and we had conversations with many of them. They made changes and sent it back, then we further discussed the works.” While Christopherson admits all the stories they received were good, the ones they chose to put into the first distribution of the magazine were the ones returned by authors who took the editorial board’s suggestions to heart and made some edits and changes. The criteria for writers consists of being from rural Alberta and between the ages of 11 and 19 years old. “We wanted to make sure our writers were old enough to understand what we (editors) were saying and be able to accept some of the critique, suggestions and feedback,” explained Christopherson. “We wanted to provide support to the writers who needed it the most, which included rural communities.” Christopherson said that receiving feedback and having connections

New police chief appointed By Lori Larsen

On May 27, during a special City of Camrose council meeting, council members ratified the decision of the Camrose Police Commission to appoint Dean LaGrange as the new Chief of Police for Camrose Police Service, effective July 8. LaGrange has over 27 years of law enforcement experience in various capacities with Calgary Police Service and most recently the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Red Deer. In speaking on the importance of the chief’s position in maintaining a healthy police service, LaGrange said, “Employees that are valued,

empowered and consulted with, feel respected, and are more productive and provide better service each and every day.” Despite the significant hiring process, Camrose Police Commission chair Rob Ford, on behalf of the Commission, said they are pleased with their decision. “LaGrange is a strong believer in building relationships with the community and leveraging partnerships both internally and externally. I am impressed with his commitment to community and to the well-being of those he works with. I am excited to see how he will build upon and support the incredible work of the Camrose Police Service.”

Lougheed set to launch season By Murray Green

Get ready to take a sneak peak into the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre 201920 season of entertainment on June 20 at 7 p.m. You can also take a tour of the facility (6 p.m.) and enjoy coffee and cake, while you think about your

Christmas tunes and storytelling in a relaxed and entertaining atmosphere. For audiences who may not usually enjoy theatre, Kayla and Kelsey charm with their wit, musicality and a whole lot of humour. Get into the Christmas spirit, while getting to know a couple of kooky

singers. With the Strictly Business catchphrase, “come laugh with us or at us,” the ladies promise that no matter what, you’ll have a good time. They will be giving a full concert on Friday, Dec. 13. Little Miss Higgins struts and serenades her way onto any stage playing early country blues, jazz and folk music. For more than 15 years,

Stampeders to play in Camrose By Murray Green

Alberta’s favourite rock band in the ’70s and ’80s will be playing a concert at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Centre next June. The Stampeders, icons in Canadian music, will be performing in a few select theatres across the Prairies next spring. They will be in Camrose on June 5 for a 7:30 p.m. show. They’re on their way, to the city lights…and bringing along all their classic hits such as “Wild Eyes,” “Carry Me”, “Oh My Lady”, “Devil You”, “Monday Morning Choo Choo”, “Minstrel Gypsy”, “Hit the Road Jack” and the Canadian Hall of Fame song “Sweet City Woman”. They will take you back in time to remember tie-dyed t-shirts, elevator shoes and 15-cent coffee. No ’70s group represented Canada’s musical identity to the world like The Stampeders. A quick look at Canada’s music scene from 1971 until 1976 confirms The Stampeders were truly the country’s international musical ambassadors, touring more extensively in Canada and overseas than any other Canadian group during that time. In 1977, the trio Rich Dodson (lead guitar), Kim Berly (drums) and Ronnie King (bass) parted company but reunited, fittingly at the Calgary Stampede, 15 years later in 1992. Since then, they’ve been recognized by SOCAN for their Lifetime Achievement, been inducted into the SOCAN Songwriters Hall of Fame on five occasions and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame for their 1971 hit “Sweet City Woman.”

The Open Door invites City council to pay a visit By Lori Larsen

During the May 21 Committee of Whole meeting, The Open Door executive director, Jessica Hutton provided council with an update on the continual work The Open Door does to provide support to youth and young adults (ages 11 to 24)within Camrose and surrounding areas. Hutton explained how The Open Door continues to grow to provide even more services and programs. “Two years ago in April when I first began, there were eight staff and we are now at 19 and need another five.” She stated the Open Door has also introduced three new programs. Statistics from 2018 indicated The Open Door provided more than 12,000 meals, 4,976 nights in housing program, over 1,100 rides to such things as appointments and school and over 10,000 interactions with different youth outside of the housing program during office hours. The Emergency Shelter (transition suites) is currently experiencing major renovation in the kitchen and

Hutton explained that in February this year, CTV did a documentary piece about the Integrated Youth Hub (in partnership with Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN), The Hub is a one-stop shop to help youth and young adults navigate the complicated world of health care, as well as providing social support) that was broadcast in Edmonton and Calgary. “The province is very interested in growing this Integrated Youth Hub (the only one operating in Alberta). That gave The Open Door and Camrose a huge amount of exposure.” She further explained, that one of the bi-products of having the Integrated Youth Hub in Camrose is inquiries from people outside of Camrose asking about how the Hub can be replicated in other places in the province and Canada. “One of the first questions I get asked is how do we work with our City and honestly, I don’t have a solid answer. “One of the main reasons I am here today is I would like us (The Open Door and City) to explore a way to really cement how we partner together. The youth that come through our building are a cross section of the youth of this entire region and City. A senior expo is ready for launch Submitted on behalf of Camrose Seniors Coaltion

There are those of you that may remember Expo 1967 in Montreal; the promise of excitement, the opportunity to explore worlds as yet unknown, a vision for the future… Well, we have the opportunity to experience a bit of that excitement right here in Camrose. Senior’s Expo is set to relaunch on Friday, June 7 from 10:30 am until 2 p.m. in the Bethany Group’s stately Heritage Building (461253 Street, across from the hospital). Hosted by the Seniors Coalition, this free event features exhibitors of all kinds from the community from senior focused retailers such as Swan City Mobility, Phillips Lifeline, local service providers such as Meals on Wheels, SOS and Camrose Hospice to the Bailey Theatre and the Camrose Seniors’ Centre. Presentations of special interest to seniors from the

Camrose City Police and Wise Owl’s Fraud Awareness Crew, as well as a local cannabis provider will begin at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the auditorium. With 20 exhibitors, there will be something for every taste especially with lunch available in the Atrium cafeteria all day. Of course the coffee is always hot as well. Outside the venue there will be a chance to view the Rose City Handivan’s brand new, smaller van as well as chance to go for a chauffeured spin on Camrose Library’s fantastic Lifecycle. The Book Bike will also be on site to answer questions, provide library cards as well as offering an eclectic selection books available for check out. The Seniors Coalition felt the time was right to relaunch a Senior’s Expo in Camrose during Alberta’s Seniors’ Week. The Seniors Coalition is hosted by Camrose and District Support Services (CDSS) and its

members include seniors as well as people representing the local programs that serve the needs and interests of seniors. Be early and receive one of the limited number of “swag” bags filled with goodies from exhibitors and beyond. Once again, this event is absolutely free but presentations do require pre-registration as seating is limited. You can register simply by calling CDSS at 780-672-0141 or the SOS Program at 780672-4131. As an added bonus, there will be limited parking on the west side of 48th Street for the duration of the event. The Community Bus also has a stop right out front to make transit an easy option as well. For more information about the Seniors Coalition contact CDSS at 780-6720141 www.camrosefcss.ca.

Covenant Health CEO visits St. Mary’s By Murray Green

Covenant Health president and CEO Patrick Dumelie visited St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose to check in on the facility, staff and the community. “We are very happy with the changes that were made in the ER for staff safety and for functioning better,” said Patrick. “We had great designers, partners in working on it and it has made a huge improvement.” He enjoys his annual trip to Camrose to see firsthand how St. Mary’s Hospital is progressing. “Camrose is now doing the scheduling for rural acute care across Covenant. The expertise that was here, we are leveraging to the other communities such as Bonnyville and Banff (eventually Mundare, Killam and Vegreville),” said Dumelie. “It is more efficient and is leveraging the expertise and knowhow that is in Camrose. The other big thing on our minds is having a new government. We were grateful for what the NDP did and now we look forward to what the next chapter will be.” The current government is undergoing a health review to create a future direction for health care. “We had plenty of opportunity to talk, preelection, to most of the candidates about health care.

Murray Green, Camrose Booster

St. Mary’s site administrator Cherylyn Antymniuk, left, and chemo coordinator nurse, Rhodelle Taylor, greet CEO Patrick Dumelie.

We talked to about 53 candidates including the main three local candidates here in Camrose. We put together some discussion papers,” said Patrick. “It has put us in good shape going forward for the review. Our goal is always to provide the best care possible in Camrose and across the whole province.” Camrose is the lead for the area on providing care for both the city and rural residents. “Camrose has services in place to keep residents in their own community and homes longer, and that will continue as long as the funding is in place. We believe that is the best care, instead of travelling to the city (Edmonton). We are better at caring for

our community people and patients.” He often gathers ideas from Camrose staff. “I often ask two basic questions: what are you most proud of and what can we do to make your job easier? I like to hear their suggestions because often times they are the front line workers and have the best solutions when they see things everyday,” said Patrick. “The hospitalists care in the hospital has really added another level of service and has been wonderful, especially from the patients perspective,” added Cherylyn Antymniuk, St. Mary’s site administrator.

Heart and stroke clinic receives Mission Award By Murray Green

Covenant Health St. Mary’s Hospital Camrose received one of the top awards in the province. The Heart and Stroke Clinic Specialists earned the Mission Award for collaboration. Covenant Health defines collaboration as a team that communicates effectively to engage others and promote integrated team functioning. The Heart and Stroke Clinic Specialists were recognized by their colleagues as those who utilize their resources effectively and have a great impact on patients, families and staff. Through teaching, program development and the provision of specialized services the staff excelled. The Mission Award recognizes Dr. Muzaffar Siddiqui (neurologist), Dr. Miguel Bussiere (neurologist), Dr. Kris Chan (cardiologist), Dr. Mike Hanninen (cardiologist) and Dr. Leslie Kasza (cardiologist) for their outstanding work in providing equal access to neurology, cardiology, and specialized stroke care services for rural patients in Camrose and local communities.

M a ny pat ient s are unable to drive to Edmonton, and urban specialty clinics have very limited capacity; therefore, the Heart and Stroke Specialists travel from the Grey Nuns Hospital to bring timely care right to our community, significantly decreasing

the volume of referrals to Edmonton clinics. Since the Heart and Stroke Clinic started in 2007, the addition of the specialists increased patients served from 125 to more than 1,150 last year. St. Mary’s Hospital couldn’t have a combined Heart and Stroke Clinic

without the help from the Grey Nuns Community Hospital Specialists. They are significant in the success of St. Mary’s Hospit a l’s m ission and passion to provide the best care for rural patients. They do an outstanding job increasing quality and continu-

ity of care, and ensure efficient patient transitions from the emergency room through the hospital, and back to their homes. The specialists are Covenant Health’s collaboration champions, with huge hearts for providing crucial services to our rural community.

MINNICE, Elaine Norma (nee Johnston)

A Note of Thanks from the Family of the late

Morley Riske

It is with broken heart and profound sadness that we announce the sudden and tragic passing of our beloved mom, Elaine Norma Minnice (Johnston), on May 16, 2019, at the age of 73. Elaine was born in Edmonton in 1945. She was a daughter, a sister, a mother, a grandmother, a traveler, a reader, a writer, a gardener, a listener, a counselor and a mentor to many. She lived in Canada, Australia and Italy and traveled throughout North America, Australia, Europe, Africa and Asia, learning new cultures and finding new friends all along the way. Elaine always put others before herself; it was simply second nature for her to help and support any and all in need. She gave her time, energy and effort selflessly to everything and to everyone in her life and asked for nothing in return. She was our role model, our guidepost and our inspiration. While she was always fiercely independent, Elaine’s favorite times were those spent with friends and especially family – her grandchildren in particular. Elaine is survived by her three sons, Dan (ex-wife Leah), Craig (Candace) and Chris (Hayley); grandchildren, Fabio, Maia, Eve, Jude, Oliver and Isabelle; her mother, Norma; brothers, David (Betty), Greg (Linda) and Darrell (Judy); and numerous nieces and nephews. We could live a thousand lives and never meet another quite like her. We have lost her way too soon. Elaine was very charitable. We ask that donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation be made in lieu of flowers. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709-111 Avenue, Edmonton. Cremation has already taken place. We wish to thank everyone who came to remember Morley and express their condolences. The visits, flowers, cards, food and donations touched our hearts and brought us comfort. We are grateful to Dr. Minders and the caring staff at St. Mary’s Hospital for Morley’s care while he waited placement, and the kind and gentle care given to Morley during the last week of his life. A very special thank you to the great team of caregivers at Bethany Meadows for the high standard of care he received during his stay there. Thanks to Simply Brass, Tova Olson and Halley Bailey for sharing your talents. Morley would have loved the music. A special thank you to Eric Olson for preparing the DVD of Morley’s favourite wildlife photos. Also, thank you to Peter Mirejovsky for sharing many of these photos. Thank you to Reverend Brian Hunter for your assistance in planning and leading the service, and for your comforting words. Thank you to Art Fadum for sharing your memories of Morley. Thank you to Bart and Derrick of Burgar Funeral Home for your personal and caring service and attention to detail. Thanks to Geordie for your work in preparing the chapel and reception area and to University of Alberta Augustana Campus for providing the wonderful venue. We all enjoyed the delicious lunch prepared by A-1 Catering and The Lefse House. God bless you all!

Harrison qualifies for golf university championship By Murray Green

Michael Harrison

Vikings golfer Michael Harrison will be the first Augustana Campus golfer to compete in the Canadian University/College Golf Championship in back-toback years. The fourth-year physical education student has been invited back to compete in the 72-hole championship from May 28 to 31 at the Fire-Rock Golf Club in Komoka, Ontario. The event is hosted by Fanshawe College, but is organized by Golf Canada and counts for World Amateur Golf Ranking. “I believe this will benefit me as I try to improve as a golfer going forward into my fifth year of ACAC and CCAA eligibility. More importantly, I hope to represent Augustana and the Camrose community as best I can,” said Harrison.

He finished in a tie for 11th in the 2018 Canadian University/College Championship and is hoping to improve upon that result. “This tournament will be a good test for me, because I will be competing against top players from the biggest universities in Canada which will require me to be at my very best to make the cut and contend for the championship.” The four-day event will include a cut after the third round (54 holes). To make the cut as an individual, Harrison will have to either be in the top 10 individually after 54 holes of play or within 10 strokes of third place. Twenty university and college golf teams from across Canada will participate, with over 100 male golfers vying for the championship. He received the honour

of ACAC Golfer of the Year for the 2018-19 season, and won a gold medal at last season’s championship. He is also a three-time CCAA AllCanadian. To help make participation in this national event possible, Harrison is seeking community support. The cost to travel and compete, without coaching staff, is approximately $1,500 and with the golf program being self-funded, student athletes on the Vikings golf team are responsible for these costs. If you’d like to help send Harrison to the championship and support the Adopta-Team Program, visit the Vikings’ giving website at www.govikings.ca/community/adopt_a_viking, or call the Augustana development office at 780-679-1558.

Vesta Bernice King July 11, 1927 ~ May 20, 2019 Vesta Bernice King of Camrose AB passed away peacefully on Monday, May 20, 2019 at the age of 91 years. She was born July 11, 1927 to Tabor and Lottie Ross and grew up with nine siblings in the Hastings Coulee area. After attending Normal School in Edmonton and getting her teacher’s certificate, Vesta received her first teaching assignment at East Lynne School. During her time there, she met Robert (Bob) King of Rosalind and they were married on April 8, 1947. They started out their married life together on a farm in the Hastings Coulee area, but after three years of crop failure, they moved back to Rosalind. In 1953, Vesta was hired to substitute for a month at East Lynne School and then that fall, was hired to teach at the Rosalind School where she continued to teach until her retirement. She was very involved in the community, belonging to the UCW and Royal Purple, the curling club, the Rosalind Ag Society and helped out at the Rosalind Drop-In Centre. She loved to play cards, curl, crochet and knit. Over the years, she crocheted afghans for her children and grandchildren which we will all cherish forever. She also loved gardening and camping. After Bob passed away, she sold her trailer and bought a motorhome so she could go on her own. She and Bob did some travelling and, after he was gone, she continued to travel with her friends. Vesta is survived by her daughters Sharon (Roger) Olesen and Janice (Alvin) Vos; four grandchildren Shawna (Clint) Sutter, Sandra (Gordon) Gee, Colette (Duane) Adam and Steven Olesen; ten great-grandchildren Jenna and Justin Hrdlicka, Maya and Nicolas Gee, Davin, Karissa and Corbyn Sutter, Cooper and Carsen Adam and Ariadne Olesen; two sisters Blanche Graumann and Shirley (Allen) Steinhoff; one brother Earl Ross; two sistersin-law, Carol Ross and Leona Ross; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Bob; her parents Tabor and Lottie Ross; her brothers Charles, Harold and Calvin; and her sisters Esther, Gladys, Eunice and Grace. Vesta had a long fight with dementia and, at the beginning, she often referred to her memory as being “as long as her nose”. She loved life, her family and friends and will be missed by all. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 27, 2019 from Rosalind Community Hall, with Rev. Mary Ann Pastuck. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Vesta’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta, the Alberta Cancer Foundation or to the Greenview Cemetery Fund. Hoyme enjoys his Impala convertible on sunny days By Murray Green

Doug Hoyme owns a beautiful blue 1960 Chevrolet Impala convertible. “I have had this car for 10 years now. I found it in Edmonton and it was partially restored. I finished it myself,” said Doug, who is from the Camrose area originally. “I’m a painter by trade, so painting this car was ideal for me. The car was show worthy, but because I’m a painter, I had to paint it in my colour to make it my own,” shared Doug. “When I graduated in Grade 12, I had a black 1960 Chevrolet Impala convertible similar to this one. But, I only had it for a week before having an accident. So when I found this one, I told myself I’ve got to have this car,” he added. Impalas were known for their large wings on the back end. However, the Impala was toned down for 1960 and lost some of its distinctive styling. Chevrolet changed almost every body panel on its 1960 cars except the roof. GM designers later admitted that they knew they’d gone too far, hence the more conservative approach for 1960. The cat’s eye tail lamps were replaced by three round cone shaped tail lamps per side and the gull wing fins were toned down. Prices ranged from $2,590 to $2,954.

WINGED WARRIOR

Murray Green, Camrose Booster Like so many car enthusiasts and those who like to enjoy the past again, Doug Hoyme purchased a 1960 Chevrolet Impala to recall his high school days with a cool vehicle in Camrose.

“This car has a 348 engine with a tripower four speed transmission, which is rare for this kind of car. It has a little more power than the regular model. It

FUN FACTS

The Impala name was first used for the fullsized 1956 General Motors Motorama show car that bore Corvette-like design cues, especially the grille. Painted emerald green metallic, with a white interior, the Impala concept car featured hardtop styling. Clare MacKichan’s design team, along with designers from Pontiac, started to establish basic packaging and dimensions for their shared 1958 General Motors “A” body in June. The first styling sketch that would directly influence the finished Chevrolet automobile was seen by General Motors Styling vice president, Harley Earl in October. Seven months later, the basic design was developed. The 1960 Impala models reinstated three round taillights on each side, and a white band running along the rear fenders. The available V8s were reduced to seven, in 283-cu in or 348-cu in displacements. The carbureted Turbo-Fire 283 cu in V8 could have either 170 or 230 hp (130 or 170 kW). The 348 cu in was available in 250 to 320 hp (190 to 240 kW) with a 350 hp (260 kW) Special Super Turbo-Thrust with triple twobarrel carburetors, 11.25:1 compression ratio, and dual exhausts. Fuel injection was no longer an option on fullsize Chevrolets. New to the options list was speed and cruise control. Production was about 490,000 units.

is a US model and motor that was a predecessor of the 409 engine,” said Doug. “It was a frame off restoration, so it was brought back to original as much as possible. I just made sure the body lines were smooth and the paint was as perfect as you can get.” Now Doug goes to several car shows every year to enjoy his Impala. He doesn’t mind coming back to the Camrose area to show his car and get a little of family visiting in at the same time. He also likes to run into his old friends to catch up on news. “It is a fun car and I have fun times with it. I loved the car when I was in Grade 12 and unfortunately it was in a collision. It was repairable, but back then it wasn’t something I was interested in doing. So when I did find this one, it was great, like going back to Grade 12 all over again,” shared Doug. “I don’t put more than 2,000 kilometres

on it every year. It is the right amount for driving to car shows, without putting too many miles on it.” The Chevrolet Impala is a full-size car built by Chevrolet for model years

1958 to 1985. The Impala was Chevrolet’s popular flagship passenger car and is generally among the better selling American made automobiles in the United States.

Tire care can save you money By Murray Green

May 13 to 19 was National Be Tire Smart Week to remind motorists to properly inflate their tires for the summer driving season. Surging gas prices have made fuel efficiency a higher priority for Canadian drivers, according to a new national survey conducted by Leger in mid-April for the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC). Nine in 10 drivers surveyed (92 per cent) say fuel economy is now a higher priority for them and 90 per cent understand that

proper tire inflation maximizes mileage and reduces fuel costs. Drivers are right to think they can save at the pump by ensuring their tires are properly inflated. Industry studies show motorists can improve their gas mileage by 0.6 per cent on average–up to three per cent in some cases simply by keeping their tires inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure. Additionally, under inflated tires can lower gas mileage by about 0.2 per cent for each one PSI drop in the average pressure of all

tires. Driving a vehicle with just one tire under inflated by 56 kPa (eight psi) can increase vehicle fuel consumption by four per cent. According to Statistics Canada, in 2017 Canadians purchased 43 billion litres of gasoline. With a 0.6 per cent gas mileage improvement resulting from proper tire inflation, drivers would have avoided having to buy 258 million litres of gasoline and saved about $348 million. Saving this much gasoline would also avoid the release of 593,000 metric tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, which equals

the emissions of 125,000 vehicles in a year. (Based on $1.35 per litre and one litre of gasoline producing 2.3 kilograms of CO2). Tire industry research shows that one third of drivers typically have at least one tire under inflated by more than 10 per cent and one in ten have at least one tire under inflated by 25 per cent or more. The survey’s findings reveal a clear disconnect between understanding proper tire inflation improves fuel economy and knowing when and how to measure tire pressure. Only 21 per cent of drivers measure their tires’ inflation pressures monthly, which is the industryrecommended interval for pressure checks. About 63 per cent are unaware inflation pressures should only be measured when tires are cold. The other 34 per cent refer to the air pressure stamped on the tire’s sidewall when identifying the correct pressure for their tires. The imprinted sidewall pressure is the maximum pressure a tire can contain under maximum load. Prolonged driving at this inflation pressure can result in uneven tread wear and reduced traction, particularly on wet surfaces. About 11 per cent rely on visual inspections to determine the correct inflation pressure for their tires. A tire can be under inflated

by 20 per cent or more and look normal. “With gas prices surging to a five-year high, it is not surprising Canadian drivers want to make smart fuel efficiency choices,” says Glenn Maidment, president of TRAC. “Consumer education is clearly needed now more than ever to bridge these persistent tire inflation-related knowledge gaps that prevent optimal fuel efficiency, cause drivers to waste their hard-earned money and help protect the environment.” Find the recommended inflation pressure for your tires on the vehicle placard. If you can’t find it, check the owner’s manual for its location. Remember to only measure pressure when the tires are cold. If you have been driving more than two or three kilometers, wait three hours before measuring. Use a tire gauge when measuring pressure. Remove the cap from the valve stem, press the tire gauge onto the valve and take the pressure reading. Add air until the recommended air pressure is achieved. If you overfill the tire, release air by pushing on the metal stem in the centre of the valve, then recheck the pressure. With growing environmental concerns globally, tire manufacturers continue to work on designing more fuel-efficient tires

Owl banding brings nature up close By Laurel Nadon

Three fluffy owlets sit on the ground beneath a row of spruce trees, waiting for their turn to have an aluminum band with a number attached to their leg. They chatter nervously at the small group of people who have gathered to be up close and personal with Great Horned Owl babies. Suddenly, the father owl swoops down and lands in a spruce tree nearby. Then the mother owl perches near him, appearing to wonder nervously what is happening with their offspring. Lisa Priestley, biologist and co-owner of Strix Ecological, together with her husband Chuck, said she loves to see people interest-

ed in the wildlife in their backyard. “It just solidifies how our work captures everyone’s interest,” said Priestley, who along with Chuck was asked to band the owlets on a farm north of Camrose on May 20. “I really like bringing people out to see what we do so I can see the experiences they have and the excitement they have when they see the animals up close. It makes them more appreciative of nature and wildlife. It makes me more excited to do my work and gives me motivation.” The owlets, once on the ground, don’t attempt to fly or run away. They sit and try to face people who approach them, lay-

ing back and putting their talons forward as a defense mechanism. The three owlets are 35 days old. Since they have now left the nest and have been perched on branches, their legs are as big as they’re going to get so the bands won’t become too tight. Once the bands are secured, each owlet is placed in a cloth bag and pulled back up into the tree to the branches they call home. Banding helps biologists to learn about nesting habitat, population changes and the number of young per nest. Three is about the maximum for a Great Horned Owl, stated Priestley. “It tells us it’s a good year for food,” Priestley said. She has been banding owls for 21 years and owns a master permit for banding, which means she can band on her own. Their children Sam, 13, and Kate, 12, often help out. “Our idea is to have them appreciate nature and to respect it for the future,” Priestley said. The family typically bands four to five Great Horned Owl nests a year in the Camrose area. They also band long-eared owls and can set up nest boxes as requested for Saw-whet Owls. Right now, the family is monitoring 75 Sawwhet Owl boxes. When a dead owl with a band is found, the infor-

mation can be submitted to a bird band website. Right now, Priestley is using banding information from Alberta and Saskatchewan for a Northern Pigmy Owl study. Their banded Sawwhet Owls have been located as far away as Glacier Park and Minnesota. “We can actually start tracking their movements and I think that’s really interesting,” Priestley said, adding that her favourite part of banding is seeing the birds up close. While their company Strix Ecological assesses places where development is planned to ensure species are protected, they also give talks at schools about owls as a way to give back to the community. This especially fits in

with a flight unit in Grade 6. Honorariums that they receive are given to wildlife rehabilitation groups. Kate was only three days old on her first trip to check on owl boxes, and six months old for her first owl banding experience. “I like it a lot. My brother and I are very lucky to have a family who does this sort of work,” Kate said, adding that they both want to follow in their parents’ footsteps and become biologists. She noted that her friends really enjoy seeing the school presentations. She said her favourite part of owl banding is being close to the birds. “I like it because there are not many people who get to see a real owl that close and get to learn about it.”

Camrose beauty pageant contestant represents overseas By Lori Larsen

Young local resident, Talayna Ekelund has been working the pageantry circuit now for four years and feels honoured to be able to represent her community on the worldwide stage. Since the early age of two, Talayna has been performing on stage beginning with dance, enjoying the limelight and the opportunity to wear elaborate outfits and take part in all the glamour that is part of that activity. “I loved being on stage from the moment I stepped foot on it,” said Talayna, adding that she equally enjoys helping behind the scenes with others who are taking to the stage. In September 2018, Talayna was crowned Miss Teen Canada CWI 2018/19. “That title is such a privilege to me as a rural girl who comes from a town of just 500 people (Daysland) and has never been given this opportunity before. It is usually girls from bigger cities such as Calgary or Toronto.” Talayna grew up watching pageant shows on television, but with her heavy dance schedule, it was difficult to get into pageants, so she remained with her true passion, dance, until an injury forced her to give up a dancing career. “That is when I switched over to beauty pageants. I figured it was relatively the same, I was able to go on stage, perform, wear hairpieces and beautiful outfits. This is a new passion that has lit my soul.” Talayna quickly learned that pageants are so much more that what people see on television. “People tend to see pag-

eants as negative because they think girls only care about their looks and pageants are only based on beauty,” she exclaimed. “But pageants are not based on beauty here in Canada, they are based on your confidence levels, how you present yourself. Beauty has nothing to do with it. Pageants are so inclusive here in Canada. I have been on stage with competitors who have autism and I was on stage with a foot boot on and an IV attached to my arm and I wasn’t judged negatively for it.” She went on to explain the benefits she has reaped by being a pageant contes-

tant, far beyond the shiny crown and silky sash. “My public speaking has improved. I used to be super shy, awkward and anti-social, but pageants and getting out in the community has allowed me the opportunity to become more confident with who I am and practice my public speaking in front of large audiences or in front of a single person. That has also helped me in job interviews and applying for scholarships.” Talayna said pageants have also afforded her the opportunity to become involved and volunteer in the community, the basis of her platform. “I get to do

so much more work in the community with volunteering. It has helped build up my modeling career and has inspired me to become a better person and help other young girls who struggle with confidence levels.” In November of this year, Talayna will be representing Canada in an international pageant against 23 other countries to be held in London, England. “I am hoping to bring back a world title and, even if I don’t succeed in bringing back a world title, I am still going to be going around the community continuing my volunteering and public speaking, helping out with local groups.” Talayna commended the communities of Camrose and Daysland for all the support they have shown her during her pageant journey. “I definitely couldn’t have done it without that support.” To date, she has been given opportunities to speak to the Women’s Hospice Society and junior high school students, to work with Sparks as a junior leader and to assist with the Camrose Elks pancake breakfasts. “When I speak with junior high students, I encourage them to be who they are and believe in themselves and succeed–to not allow anyone to crush their dreams, because dreams are just ideas that will eventually happen in the future.” Volunteering allows Talayna to help others who may not reach out and ask. “It shows there are people who do care and are willing to help. I can learn people’s stories and meet

new people whom I may not have had the opportunity to have met before.” Part of Taylana’s mandate (platform) with volunteering, is to help bring international awareness to the different not-for-profit organizations with the community. Preparing for upcoming pageants means spending time with her coach learning routines, preparing for interview questions and selecting and preparing a variety of outfits worn during the pageant. In the beginning, Talayna admits she pretty much kept her competing to herself, concerned about the stigma that is often associated with pageants. She soon learned that it is okay to talk about and be proud of the activities one is passionate about. “If your friends cannot accept the things you are interested in, they may not be the best choice of friends. Find the people whom you can relate to the most and accept you for who you are and support whatever you choose to do.” Like any interest, whether it be hockey, painting, basketball, writing, dance or doing pageants, the key is the focus and passion the participant experiences in being part of, but more importantly, the opportunities that present themselves to young people with being involved in something that builds character and pride. In conclusion, Talayna said how grateful she is to everyone, both individuals and businesses, who have supported her throughout her journey and reiterated how much it means to have the community behind her.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

By Lori Larsen

Located on a quiet crescent in Southwest Meadows this quality built bungalow is move in ready, just in time to enjoy warm summer days. The home has striking curb appeal and a circular driveway that allows easy access to and from the large heated garage. Upon entering the home you will be immediately struck by all the beautiful extra details and fine craftsmanship throughout. The spacious entry way leads into the living room with a stylish gas fireplace. Adjacent is a formal dining area which is accented by coffered ceilings, arches and columns. The kitchen is stunning with trendy upgrades, gorgeous appliances, quartz countertops, a huge island with breakfast bar and a walk-in pantry. Completing the main floor is a fabulous master suite with walk-in closet and spa-like en suite with a 5 foot shower, another bedroom, main four-piece bathroom and a convenient laundry room.

Graham Wideman The basement is completely finished and has a large family room with a built-in dry bar. There is plenty of room for a pool table. An oversized bedroom would be the perfect suite for an older teenager who wants a little more of their own space and privacy. Finishing the basement level is a good-sized storage area and a three-piece bathroom. Privacy fencing, a large covered deck, patio area, posts for a hammock and a separated courtyard make the outdoor space a luxurious extension of a perfect lifestyle. The 24 x 24 foot heated garage is completely finished and RV parking is available on the side of the property. This one of a kind custom built home is located at 3710-68A Street, priced at an incredible $475,900. You won't want to miss out on this home.
