It’s Environmental Week! Dan Faithfull, manager of Save-On-Foods Camrose, displays some of the perishable produce that is offered free to a variety of local farmers. This occurs daily at his store. Save-On-Foods partners with Loop Resources to select farm families which will participate in his company’s safe, consistent and measurable food waste initiative.

Most businesses take the responsibility of recycling seriously. In recent years, grocery retailers have adopted responsible food waste reduction programs in an effort to keep surplus unsold meat, bakery, dairy and produce away from landfills. In Camrose, NeighborAid, operator of Camrose Food Bank, is the grateful recipient of a multitude of product each year courtesy of local grocery stores. With the ultimate goal of zero food waste, grocery chains and independent food retailers have also begun unique partnerships with area farmers as a way to solve their food waste issue, while building a healthier community. Perishable food items not accepted or not suitable for local charities are offered in a structured, controlled manner for composting and as feed for select livestock. Food waste is a critical issue in Canada. Estimates suggest almost 60% of all food produced annually in Canada is never consumed. Some studies suggest that over half of the amount that Canadians spend on food each year is wasted. That represents enough food for every Canadian for a full five months!
