Most businesses take the responsibility of recycling seriously. In recent years, grocery retailers have adopted responsible food waste reduction programs in an effort to keep surplus unsold meat, bakery, dairy and produce away from landfills. In Camrose, NeighborAid, operator of Camrose Food Bank, is the grateful recipient of a multitude of product each year courtesy of local grocery stores. With the ultimate goal of zero food waste, grocery chains and independent food retailers have also begun unique partnerships with area farmers as a way to solve their food waste issue, while building a healthier community. Perishable food items not accepted or not suitable for local charities are offered in a structured, controlled manner for composting and as feed for select livestock. Food waste is a critical issue in Canada. Estimates suggest almost 60% of all food produced annually in Canada is never consumed. Some studies suggest that over half of the amount that Canadians spend on food each year is wasted. That represents enough food for every Canadian for a full five months!

Teddy for a Toonie assists Stollery By Murray Green

Alberta Treasury Branch in Camrose and its customers helped the Stollery Children’s Hospital during the annual Teddy for a Toonie fundraiser on May 29. This year was particularly important as they celebrated two milestones. This was the 20th anniversary and it marked over $10,000,000 raised. “In Camrose, we are proud to say that we have helped raise more than $40,000 to support this amazing Alberta facility. This year, we hosted a chili lunch and an in-house massage therapist. The primary focus this year

is mental health for our children, with all proceeds going to the Stollery mental health programs,” said Stacey Siminick, Camrose assistant ATB manager. Teddy for a Toonie began 20 years ago, as a simple fundraiser, when a team member from Calgary was making frequent trips to the Alberta Children’s Hospital with her daughter, she wanted to do something as a thank you to the hospital and its staff. With the support of her branch manager, the Sunridge branch in Calgary hosted a bake sale and customers who donated $2 or more could write their name on a teddy bear cut-

out that would hang in the branch. Eventually that grassroots effort led to the introduction of physical teddy bears. Twenty years later, it’s an annual tradition deeply connected to ATB’s culture and how they support Alberta and its communities. ATB hit an incredible fundraising milestone that is a testament to the commitment of 5,500 plus team members in helping ATB change people’s lives for the better. Each of those dollars has directly supported the development of facilities, resources and programs for children’s health care in Alberta.

The question is...

A long time ago, I read, “Questions are more important than answers.” I rolled my eyes. I was interested in practical answers, not useless philosophy. I’ve changed my mind about two things since then: questions and philosophy! But for now, let’s focus on questions. Empowering questions. Some years later, I met a woman who taught me, “Ask empowering questions.” Here’s what she meant. If you ask a question such as, “Why did this happen to me?” or “What’s wrong with ______?” you will undoubtedly think of answers. But you won’t feel happier or more capable. On the other hand, if you ask a question like, “What can we learn from this?” or “What’s an opportunity in this situation?” you will undoubtedly think of answers and you might feel happier or more capable. She had a list of “empowering questions”–questions that take your mind in a direction that makes you happier and better able to be in charge of your life. Don’t ask

Sometime after that, I figured out something else. Human brains are hardwired to figure things out, to go in search of answers to questions. Our brains love puzzles. If you ask a question, your brain is going to busy itself finding an answer. Based on that, I came up with a list of questions you should never ask, because you really do not want your brain to show you the answer. Here are some examples: How hard can it be? What’s not to like? How long could it take? Pay attention to the questions you ask yourself, because your brain is going to find out for you–possibly by demonstrating the answer! Your brain will think it’s doing you a favour. You may not agree. Risk management questions Of course, there is a place for asking questions to which you might not like the answers, in order to help you prepare for possible challenges. For example, the astronaut Chris Hadfield says that as part of astronaut preparation they spend months asking, “What could go wrong?” and then figuring out what they could do if such a thing happened. It’s called risk management and preparation. Hadfield says that problems did indeed happen when they were out in space. The problems were never exactly the same as what the astronauts had imagined. However, because they had thought of possibilities months or years before, they were able to adapt and respond when real challenges happened out in space. That saved their lives more than once. Questions that changed our thinking. A while ago I was with a group of people who shared a process I really appreciated. First, we were asked to think of something that was on our minds, perhaps something that was troubling us or some incident when we reacted in a way that we wished we hadn’t. We had some time to reflect on how that situation made us feel. Then we were asked to think about, “What would it be like if that problem were solved?” We had fun imagining that. The final four questions were ones I intend to ask myself often: What is the greatest potential waiting to unfold? What is the message trying to get through? Who is this situation asking me to be? What are the best possible conditions I can create, so that the greatest potential can happen? I found those to be very empowering questions. Questions that can expand our thinking I Googled “Ask empowering questions” and found some others that took my mind in expansive directions: What impact would you like to have? In an ideal world, what could be possible? What can you stop doing so that you can make room for what’s important? If you had a magic wand, what would you do? What makes your heart sing? How can you have more of that in your life? What questions are on your mind this week? Hope they are empowering. *** I’d love to hear from you! Send a note about this column or suggestions for future columns to Bonnie@ BonnieHutchinson.com and I’ll happily reply within one business day.

June is Mal de Deba rquement Sy ndrome (MdDS) Awareness Month. MdDS is a rare neurolog ical balance disorder that causes people to feel like their body is rocking, swaying, or bobbing. I am in my third year of living with this syndrome and I can best describe it as being on a cruise ship on high seas or trying to walk on a trampoline all day, every day. This syndrome usually develops following a cruise, travel by air, or long distance travel on land. About 20 per sent of people develop it spontaneously. For me, the motion began on my treadmill. In addition to rocking, swaying, and bobbing there is the feeling of disequilibrium, unsteadiness and a sense of unsteady ground. The sense of motion is often associated with anxiety or depression, diff iculty multitasking, difficulty concentrating and visual motion intolerance. It is rare to find a doctor who is familiar with this syndrome. Fortunately for me, my doctor, although she had not heard of this disorder, never once doubted that I was feeling that my body was in constant

motion. Over time, Dr. Anderson learned about this rare disorder. A caring doctor is crucial to living with this condition. There is no effective treatment or cure for this disorder. I sought and receive help from the counseling service offered by the PCN. That has been helpful as I learn to cope with the frustration and acceptance of my rock and roll life. The understanding, support, and compassion I receive from my doctor and my counselor have helped me manage to live with this disorder that is constant, debilitating and exhausting. In order to cope with this syndrome I must reduce stress, be well rested, and avoid symptom triggers. Walking is recommended so I am a regular at the track. Walking is one of the most difficult things for me to do, but I walk with the aid of walking poles. I also find that yard work and housework are hard to do. I look perfectly normal, but over the past few months, my difficulty walking has become visibly noticeable. However, the fact remains that I am still me. I have chosen to share my journey in hopes that I can help somebody else or edu-

I recently heard that Wetaskiwin is going to be banning single use plastic bags beg inning on July 9, 2019. I am wondering if Camrose has thought about doing the same thing. I believe that our community would benefit from a similar bylaw. Plastic bags are not biodegradable and they pollute oceans, rivers, farmland and cities. Eventually they become microplastics that get into our food and water. I know that some people will say that they forget to bring cloth bags to stores, but they will get used to it just like they remember to bring their purses or wallets. I hope that our City Council will consider banning plastic bags in Camrose. Although they are convenient, they are not worth the damage they do to our environment. Legion to honour D-Day By Murray Green

The Camrose branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will be honouring D-Day, June 6, with a small ceremony at Branch #57 beginning at 11 a.m. The 1944 Battle of Normandy – from the D-Day landings on June 6 to the liberation of Paris on Aug. 25 – was a pivotal event in the Second World War and one of Canada’s greatest military accomplishments. He will attend commemorative events to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. The Canadian delegation will include the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence Lawrence MacAulay, Veterans, representatives from Indigenous and Veterans organizations, parliamentarians, and young Canadians. “We owe an immeasurable debt to the veterans, the fallen, and all their loved ones who served and

As we mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day, we come together to honour the Allied troops who came ashore that day and changed the course of history,” said Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada. that sailed to the beaches of Normandy in June 1944. electronically inside the church. That bell came from the original Ferry Point school. A member of the County school board (at the time) happened to be a member

of the parish, so after the Ferry Point school was no longer in use, apparently the bell was laying on the edge of the property, so they brought in to use at the church.” Along with the carved cross, the front of the church will be adorned with plots of natural grasses and flowers gracing the bottom of the cross and the other remaining tree stump in an effort to honour indigenous culture and Treaty Six land. “We will be putting a couple of benches on each side of the front of the church to provide a place for people to wait for the bus or just stop and rest along their walk.” One of the benches will bear indigenous symbols and a plaque conveying the words (in English and Cree): “With this bench, the Anglican Parish of St. Andrew’s commemorates the survivors of Indian Residential Schools, pledges itself to the pursuit of reconciliation with our Indigenous neighbors, and acknowledges our location on Treaty Six lands. This bench and garden are meant to be enjoyed. This is a place of honour and respect.” “We are also going to have one of the free lending (mini-libraries) for residents, from which to lend to and borrow.” The carved cross will also have a plaque commemorating founders and those who have gone before. Come out on June 8 (weather permitting) and enjoy being part of the past becoming the present.

Camrose Booster Last Thursday, May 30th, was a day to remember in this community as winds shifted and forest fire smoke, combined with the right combination of sun and cloud, produced a spellbinding, if not frightful, afternoon sky. Several photos, taken by Ron Pilger, associate publisher of The Camrose Booster were posted on the Camrose NOW! Facebook page and were shared countless times. The result was nearly 29,000 views of the pictures, including the one above, from a day that will long be remembered.

SingAble brings community together

hearts, not only in Camrose, but throughout the province as well. Camrose Association for Community Living and University of Alberta Augustana Campus, through the work with SingAble, recently received the Alberta Council of Disability Services (ACDS) Innovation Award 2019, recognizing innovators in the community disability sector. ACDS is a provincial organization consisting of a membership that provides services to people with disabilities. “Innovation awards are presented to organizations (individuals) who address an issue within the disability sector,” explained Esther McDonald, CAFCL chief executive officer. “The issue we are addressing with SingAble is inclusion, social bonding and mental wellness.” McDonald indicated that another criteria of the award was to demonstrate what the benefits (of the chosen initiative) were to the community, in particular people with disabilities. Ries noted the many benefits music has physically, socially and mentally. “In terms of the social benefit for us (through SingAble), there is community building that happens. Singing together means our hearts are beating together in time to the music, we are breathing together in time to the music and research shows that when one is experiencing music together their brain waves are in sync as well. In terms of benefits to the community, we have achieved our goals.” Jensen expressed his thoughts on the benefits SingAble has given to the community. “I think about it as having three winners. The community is able to explore their voices and love for music. The students of Augustana are exposed to different career options (such as CAFCL) and opportunities for research projects and university credits. Finally, marginalized individuals (CAFCL and throughout the community) are able to explore different Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster options in the community for interacting Proudly displaying the ACDS (Alberta Council with others and are able to discover music of Disability Services) innovation award in and musical expression.” recognition of the SingAble initiative are Jensen continued, “This is a comCamrose Association For Community Living munity award because it involves many (CAFCL) support worker Dan Jensen, left, people from the community as well as CAFCL chief executive officer Esther McDonald, centre, and Ardelle Ries, Augustana and CAFCL and I am so thankful for the support of everyone.” seated, associate professor of music at the

Totally unaware of the full impact an idea placed into a suggestion box could possibly have, Camrose Association For Community Living support worker Dan Jensen graciously admits how happy he is to see SingAble, a community based choir, become such a win/win initiative. With the University of Alberta Augustana Campus, specifically the incredible talent and warm persona of associate professor of music Ardelle Ries on board, the idea quickly became a reality. Since those humble beginnings back in the fall of 2018, when SingAble melded into a strong voice of the community at the first rehearsal on Oct. 2, the choir has flourished and is making its mark on ears and

Over the last few weeks, Conservative leader, Andrew Scheer, has been busy delivering a series of speeches that outline our vision for the future of Canada. As we approach the 2019 Federal Election, it is important Canadians know what distinguishes us from the other parties, particularly the governing Liberals. On the issue of immigration, leader Andrew Scheer said as Prime Minister he would set immigration levels consistent with what is in Canada’s best interest. The number will reflect what Canada needs and, just as importantly, who needs Canada. We will prioritize people facing true prosecution and will more expeditiously reunite survivors of genocide. Furthermore, he pledged to immediately restore fairness, order and compassion in our immigration system in which Canadians have lost faith in. The integrity of our border has been severely compromised by the unprecedented influx of illegal immigrants entering Canada from the United States, particularly along the Quebec-US border. The Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), as well as the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB), recently admitted that the backlog in processing asylum claims will continue to grow as a result of this influx. The best they will be able to do, even with increased funding from the government, is slow the growth percentage in the backlog. The Conservative leader’s questioning, on behalf of concerned Canadians, about the Trudeau government’s ability to preserve the integrity of our immigration system, was predictably met with the calling of names. This not only reduces legitimate concern and criticism to cheap partisanship; it debases and devalues the real threats of racism, bigotry and extremism. In a passionate delivery, Scheer said, “there is absolutely no room in a peaceful and free country like Canada for intolerance, racism and extremism of any kind. And, the Conservative Party of Canada will always make that absolutely clear. This goes to one of my most deeply held personal convictions. I believe that we are all children of God. And therefore, there can be no inferiority amongst human beings. And that equal and infinite value exists in each and every one of us. And I find the notion that one’s race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation would make anyone in any way superior or inferior to anybody else absolutely repugnant.” Mr. Scheer concluded, “Diversity is the result of our strength. And our strength is and always has been our freedom. And that freedom is based on the institutions and principles that we hold so dear and that we must ensure are protected. The reason why so many people from around the world are able to be treated equally, practice their faith, pass on their customs and traditions, is because ours is a society is based on the equality of all human beings.” The intolerance of others’ beliefs and the denial of freedom of speech that has so righteously been displayed by various Liberal cabinet ministers is a blatant repudiation of the strongly held Conservative belief that there is “Unity in Diversity” and this includes diversity of opinion or belief. Prime Minister Trudeau has been abundantly clear that his Liberal Party is not a big tent party where there is room for candidates or members who dare to have a divergence of opinion or belief. In contrast, the Conservative Party of Canada does have a big tent where all are welcome. Attendance varies topping out at 100 choir members with a core group of around 75. “We had an individual from Shri Lanka who was visiting the community so he came and taught us a song,” noted Ries. Another family from Jamaica (visiting Camrose) came out to sing with the group. Apparently the word

is out and the message is strong, the universal language of music is a living truth in Camrose. Not only is the choir diverse in background but it is not limited by ability or age. “We have had a 10-week-old baby up to and an 86-year-old member, and everyone in between,” said Ries. “And students have been wonderful in support of us. We have had

about 10 students working as researchers or through Community Service Learning and then these students who have come out of the woodwork and said they just want to help.” Ries said that one of the university students is presently working at CAFCL doing a research project, conducting a survey of the SingAble population. “She is looking at what SingAble has done for the individuals over the year– connection to singing and

other people by developing awareness of individuals with disabilities.” After experiencing the opportunity to hear and see this choir in action, one quickly understands the far reaching influence they have on this community. “SingAble was one of the musical groups that sang at the Rotary Gala at the end of April,” smiled Jensen. SingAble has also written and recorded their first composition, entitled the

SingAble Song. “This is the chorus,” recited Ries. “We love to sing because we are able. We raise our voices proud and strong. And when we sing, we sing without label. We are singers and this is our song.” For more information on SingAble visit cafcl.ca/ singable-registration/. The choir will start up again on Oct. 1, following the summer hiatus. Come one, come all and sing your heart out.

Cricket tourney set for Augustana Campus By Murray Green

The Rose City Cricket Club will be hosting its second annual Six a Side Cricket Tournament at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus soccer grounds on June 16 beginning at 8 a.m. “We are hosting the tournament with eight teams this year. We want to create interest in the sport and expand it in Camrose,”

said Sanjaya Weerasinghe, president of the local club. Seven of the confirmed teams are the Edmonton Lions, Westernchira Kings, Augustana Vikings, Edmonton Strikers, Spruce Grove Cosmics and the local Rose City Cricket Club. The winners will be awarded with the Norm Mayer Championship Trophy. Awards will also be pre-

sented to the best batter and best bowler. The cricket club has invited City of Camrose Mayor, Norm Mayer to present the awards after the championship final. “This will be a great opportunity for the Camrose community to witness another exciting cricket tournament. With only six players on each side, a game can be played in about 15

minutes. It makes it a fast game and an exciting game to watch,” added Sanjaya. The teams will be divided into pools for a round robin, prior to the playoff rounds. “We encourage people to come out to watch and see some great action.” For more information on joining the club or learning how to play the game, contact Sanjaya at 780-781-1796.

Plugging into People Power The alarm goes off, your feet hit the floor, and you flip the bathroom switch. You walk through the hallway into the kitchen, and turn on the lights. After filling the coffee pot or kettle, you plug it in, push start, and a few minutes later you have your morning brew. You grab the remote and turn on the morning news, while you unplug your phone charger. How many times a day do you use electricity? In the first few minutes of your day you flip on, plug in, turn on, and unplug from electricity without giving it a second thought. Apart from the click of a switch, the voice of an announcer on TV, or the noise of the appliances– electricity just quietly does its job. These days electricity travels quietly from pole to pole through lines strung across rural Alberta. Thirty-two Rural Electrification Associations (REA) distribute electricity across hundreds of kilometres of line to over 41,000 members. Those REAs are part of a larger cooperative movement in Canada dating back to the 1840s that now includes over 9,000 co-ops in nearly every business sector imaginable. When a co-op of any kind forms, it is exciting and people are involved. But, over time, it all becomes routine, similar to flipping on the light switch. There are the annual meetings with dry financials and bylaws to vote on. Years pass, the excitement wanes, and people go back to their busy lives. Alberta REAs have gone through the same ups and downs, but the REA distribution system has quietly hummed along providing reliable and cost effective power to rural residents.

Excellent Kingman Properties For Sale Commute to Camrose, Sherwood Park, Leduc or Edmonton

5 beds • 3 baths 1819 sq. ft. Large entrance & mudroom in this no-pet home. Sunken family room with gas fireplace. Three season sunroom, master en suite with soaker tub, central vacuum, custom blinds, new furnace. On Kingman water supply. Beautifully landscaped. RV parking. Two large covered decks, one with a kids’ slide! Gas barbecue and outdoor fireplace. Walk to anywhere in Kingman easily. E4145754 $375,000

Amidst that quiet reliability we noticed a worrisome trend. Some REA members don’t know they are members. Others may be aware they are members, but they have no idea what the value is apart from being able to turn on lights and appliances at will.

We want to reverse that trend and you can help. Check your power bill and see if your power is distributed by an REA. If it is, call your REA to validate your member information. Add the next Annual General Meeting to your calendar and plan to attend. Contact the director who is elected to represent your area. Get involved with keeping a locally-owned business viable in your community.

Active members are the people power who keep an REA going strong. REA co-ops are owned by their members and governed by a Board of Directors elected from the membership. They rely heavily on member involvement. So we are taking to the newspaper, the radio, and social media to help spread the word. REAs are powerful co-ops with a history of energizing their members.

Your REA wants you to get plugged in to the power of your REA co-op.

Ballet offers Mary Poppins By Murray Green

DONATING TO:

Dancers from Ballet Camrose have a busy weekend planned for June 8 and 9. Members of the local dance club will performing Dance! at 6 p.m. in the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. The year end performances will be showcasing contemporary, ballet, pointe, jazz, lyrical, tap, hip hop and acro. Then on Sunday, it is a whole lot of family fun as Ballet Camrose presents the classic Mary Poppins at 2 p.m. Victoria Watmough stars as Mary Poppins and Chelsey Chartrand excels as Bert and the rest of the characters come to life on stage. “It’s special to play Mary Poppins because it feels like it is your year. When you are little you play a small part and wait for your chance to get a lead role,” said Victoria. “Playing a lead role is something the younger dancers can look up to. You get to be a role model for the younger dancers,” added Chelsey. Both dancers said they enjoy working with younger dancers and could see themselves help teach in the future. Being in two totally different shows in back to back days is a huge task. “It is hard to go back and forth and sometimes you get things mixed up, but we will all get it in the end,” shared Victoria. “It gives you a chance to sort things out in your mind. You can work on different things, but more concentration on ballet now instead of everything as a whole,” said Chelsey. “It’s exciting to be in Mary Poppins because it is well known and being Mary is a fun part to play. It has a lot of other characters, so everyone can be in it,” Victoria explained. “It has a good story line and plot. We started working on Mary Poppins at the end of March, so it hasn’t been a lot of time. It has been busy with more rehearsals than usual. We have to learn a lot of dances,” shared Chelsey. The challenge is telling the classic story through dance. “You have to use your body to create expressions and moods. If it is sad you elongate your movements and if it is happy you jump more or something to set the mood,” explained Victoria. “We have worked so hard for a number of years to get to the point of having a lead role. It is like you are graduating to lead roles and

County issues fire advisory, warns unsupervised burning By Murray Green

With parts of Camrose County dryer than other areas, councillors agreed to put out a fire advisory considering the dry conditions. Council didn’t want to issue a complete fire ban

because the south end of the County received about an inch of rain on May 24. Cou ncillor Doug Lyseng moved to issue a fire advisory at this time, to allow for burning in barrels and campfires. “ T he d i f ferenc e

between a fire advisory and a fire ban is that a ban cancels open burns and all active fire permits that have already been issued. Under a ban, no fire permits can be issued,” said Mike Kuzio, manager of protective services.

An advisory was issued by the County on May 28, warning people that the County is experiencing some dry conditions in some areas of the County, especially in the north. Kuzio explained that

when someone receives a burning permit, they receive a list of suggestions on how to contain the fire and must follow those conditions, such as having access to water and machinery.

Kublik keeps Oldsmobile in the family By Murray Green

Arlen Kublik is a proud owner of a 1964 Oldsmobile F-85 Deluxe. He knows every owner the car has had in the past 55 years. “The car was originally owned by Gustav Sagert, who was my grandfather. The car has been in the family since it was new in 1964,” said Arlen, who lives near New Sarepta. “It was last driven in the fall of 1984 and he died in April 1985. It sat in the garage from then until 2001 when it was on the way to the crushers. The funds were going to go to cancer research. My oldest brother decided to give $400 instead and he took the car.” The the car sat in his brother’s garage from 2001 to 2014. “I saw that he wasn’t going to do anything with the car, so my son and I each paid $200 to buy the car and take it over in August 2014,” explained Arlen. “Since then I have been going to car shows with it and keeping it running, and the family car alive. I love the memories of the car because it was my grandfather’s. Everything is totally original and totally untouched as far as changes, except for the tires. I had to put a water pump in. Other than that, the way you see it is the way it is going to stay. I’ll only do minor repairs to keep it running,” said Arlen. “My son turns 25 next year, so then he can start driving

it. He’ll enjoy it when I’m gone.” Arlen spends plenty of time waxing and polishing the car, preparing it for the next show. “The imperfections that are in the car now, is the way my grandfather

FUN FACTS

For 1964, the Oldsmobile F-85 was redesigned and now rested on a frame that measured 203 inches, 11 inches larger than the 1963 model. This moved it from being a compact into an intermediate. The 1963 aluminum block V8 engine was replaced with a V6 or cast-iron Rocket V8 engine. Another big change for this model year was the introduction of the 442 option package. It was a $136 option, which represented four barrel, four speed, and dual exhaust. The interiors were vinyl or cloth. Standard equipment included a heater/defroster, self-adjusting brakes, dual sun visors, oil filter, and front stabilizer. Deluxe and Cutlass equipment included Deluxe steering wheel, padded dash and carpets. In 1964, Oldsmobile introduced the 442 to compete with Pontiac’s new GTO. The new intermediate F-85 now rode a conventional body-on-frame chassis with a perimeter frame which it shared with the newly-introduced A-body Chevrolet Chevelle, and upgraded Buick Special and Pontiac Tempest. Both the aluminum V8 and the Roto Hydramatic were discontinued in favor of a new cast-iron small-block V8 of 330 cubic inch (5.4 L) displacement and an optional two-speed Jetaway automatic transmission with variable-pitch stator. Buick’s 225 cu in (3.7 L) V6 was the standard engine.

left it and that is the way I will leave it. I still have the original bill of sale in the glove box. It is still insured with the same company that it was in 1964.” The F-85 came in either standard or deluxe trim. Body styles included club coupe, station wagon or sedan. The deluxe models were sports coupes, sedan, or station wagon. The car has the original windshield (with no cracks) and a sticker from a national park dated 1965. “I think the windshield is worth more than the car,” joked Arlen. “It has a Don Wheaton Chev Olds sticker on it and the phone number is still the same. It had 62,400 miles on it in 2014. Now it has just over 71,000 on it. I drive it to car shows, but not too often to run up the mileage.” The Oldsmobile has some pep to it. “The car has a 330 (engine) two speed automatic and it goes pretty good. I was looking at the owner’s manual and it was explaining how to pass.

When you stomp on the pedal it kicks down into low and you pass at 60 miles an hour like a sports car. It is amazing how much power the car has,” said Arlen. “You can see on the bumper when he hit a tree

with it. I tried to pull it out a little, but you can still see the point he hit the tree,” Arlen said. “The bumper has a Don Wheaton sticker on it as well, so I’m not going to replace the bumper either.”

Battling the broom bristles By Lori Larsen

One of Camrose’s greatest assets is its wonderful trail system that runs throughout our City providing over 37 kilometres of walking, running, skiing, biking and other recreational activities, for residents to enjoy year round. Maintaining the trail system largely falls on the City of Camrose, particularly Community Services Parks and Recreation department and can be a fairly tall order, therefore the goodwill of residents, guests and visitors to assist in keeping the trails maintained is greatly appreciated. In particular a handful of residents have gone above and beyond to ensure the trails and subsequent

Ethel Anne Affleck June 5, 1919 ~ May 23, 2019 Ethel Anne Affleck passed away Thursday, May 23, 2019, just two weeks before her 100th birthday. Ethel was predeceased by her husband Lyle; parents John and May Bulloch; and sisters Phyllis Butt and Muriel Jones. Left to cherish her precious memory are her two children Robert Affleck of Camrose and Joan ( Keith) Stratton of Oak Bay, NB; five grandchildren Bradley (Darlene) Affleck, Kirsten Affleck, Sara (Neil) Dunn, Kyle (Ayerica) Stratton, and Drew (Brianna) Stratton; eight great-grandchildren Caiden, Brodie and Ryder Affleck, Heston and Milo Dunn, Vanessa and Eli Stratton and Kai Stratton. Ethel was born in Manor, SK, where she resided with her parents and sisters. Finishing secondary school, she went to Saskatoon with plans to pursue a career in nursing. The events of the war years first led her to Toronto to work in a small munitions factory. Having met Lyle previously, who was stationed in Ontario with the RCAF, they were married in 1943. Residing in Napanee, ON first, they then moved to Melfort, SK where Joan was born. Their next move was to Saskatoon where Bob was born. In 1953, the family moved to Camrose where Ethel has resided for 66 years. Mom had three main passions in her life: her Faith, her Family and her Friends. As her nuclear family expanded, Mom played an integral part in loving and teaching each new member introduced into our family. Everywhere Mom went, people were touched by her uplifting and loving spirit. Her home was always open. Mom led by example and had a special way of transcending generational gaps with her supportive, non-critical and fun-loving personality. Mom had many hobbies including oil painting, quilting and gardening. Mom grew old at a young pace, leaving a legacy of love. Her funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 8, 2019 from the CityLights Church, 4920-48 Street, Camrose with Merlin Affleck officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at the Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Ethel’s memory may be made to STARS Air Ambulance or to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, or to the Camrose Food Bank. Our sincere thanks to the Home Care Staff of Deer Meadows and Spruce Cottage for so lovingly caring for our precious Mom for the past 2 years. A special thank you to Mom’s friends who brightened her days with their visits and prayers. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

Norman Martin Berglund October 9, 1928 ~ May 29, 2019 Our love knows no bounds. Today we mourn the loss of Norman and Audrey who wished to be together even in their afterlives. Norman passed away due to medical complications at the St. Mary’s Hospital on May 29, 2019 at the age of 90 years. Audrey passed after a long battle with Alzheimer’s on April 26, 2017 at the age of 88 years. Norman was born to Grace and Hjalmer Berglund. He lived all his life in the Edberg area. A hard working farmer, he also believed in giving back to his community. He taught hunter training, helped with 4-H, Scouts, served on the School Board and more. Norman’s greatest passions were to fly his airplane and go big game hunting with his good friends. Audrey was born in Ferintosh where she was raised on the family farm by Chris and Hazel Graff. She loved her horses and her family. Continuing her education, she attended college in Olds. Any beauty the earth could provide was her specialty. From stunning flowers to a bountiful vegetable garden – that’s where you would find Audrey, always with her feet planted firmly on the ground. She decorated beautiful cakes, sewed quilts and loved ELCW ladies. Norman and Audrey wed on July 9, 1951. They built and grew their own family farm just west of Edberg. They loved to go fishing and visiting relations. Both were active in their community and their church. Audrey and Norman are survived by their daughter Cheryl (Neil) Curtis; grandchildren Kim (Rob) Albers, Billy and Brad Dingman, Kenny Berglund, Chad (Karley) Berglund, Tara Abrahamson, Amanda (Neal) Beaton, Joel (Heidi) Abrahamson, Cary Abrahamson, Austin (Sharene) Breure, Garrett Curtis, Danielle Curtis; and much to their joy, numerous great-grandchildren. Sadly, they were predeceased by their children Ricky Berglund, Marilyn Abrahamson and Brant Berglund, who are missed every day. Living long lives, both passed away with no regrets, tons of friends and a big family who loved and cherished them both. A funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 4, 2019 from the Messiah Lutheran Church. Norman and Audrey were inurned together at the Fridhem Cemetery South (near Ferintosh). If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Norman’s memory may be made to the Fridhem Cemetery South. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

City investigates solutions to broom bristles in parks Continued from page 23

“We have even purchased the higher quality brooms,” said Poole. “But it doesn’t seem to help.” These hard plastic bristles, approximately eight to 10 inches long, that break off end up being left behind on the trail, often covered by snow. Come spring when

the snow disappears the bristles can then be found laying throughout the City trails and parks. “We have a few really caring residents,” noted Poole. “Who get out there without a lot of complaint, and have taken it upon themselves to pick up these bristles”

One resident in particular, Bill Sears, an avid walker, made it a bit of a mission and ended up picking up four goodsized boxes of the broom bristles this spring alone. “He asked the City if there isn’t something we could be doing differently,” said Poole.

Prior to being approached by Sears with this concern, Poole, along with other Community Services Parks and Recreation staff investigated three pilot project (options) to help alleviate the problem. “We are looking at going back to using the

snow plow on the front of the machinery as opposed to the brooms,” explained Poole. “We do have to be more careful around the grass, and with bumping into small items and trees and breaking the blade, the brooms tend to be more forgiving.

Arthur (Waltsmar) Walger November 30, 1934 ~ May 24, 2019 Art, born November 30, 1934, to Alexander and Helen Walger, came to the south Bittern Lake area at the age of one and lived his life’s calling of farming and raising his family in the area. On May 4, 1957 he married Hazel Johnson who was his dedicated partner for over 55 years until her passing on December 22, 2012; and to this union four children were born. He attended school at the Roseland school west of Bittern Lake and then the South Bittern Lake school at the original site of the Village of Rosenroll, which had relocated to form the current Village of Bittern Lake. He enjoyed serving on the Village of Bittern Lake Council as a Councillor and as Deputy Mayor with Mayor A.J. Martin, Treasurer George Butcher and Councillor Gordon Hagstrom. He was pleased that the Village was able to pave its roads, install street lighting and construct a municipal wastewater system while being debt free. He also volunteered with the Bittern Lake community hall and assisted with the original playground. Art was an industrious farmer who believed in hard yet productive work and honest sweat. He was an exceptionally hard worker, persistent and optimistic…such as “we will get rain” or “it will work out”. He lived and enjoyed farming the land to grow crops as well as ranching, where he cared for livestock, especially his herd of beef cattle. The land was highly regarded for the cycle of life, farming and the continuity of the family. To have dirt on one’s hands and face was a reward. He also expressed his craft and joy of working the land in non-stop care of expansive lawns, hedges, flower beds and his vegetable garden up to the end of his life. He stayed true to his calling where he planted flowers only days before passing. Spring was the time of renewal, starting with calving season and then the big push of seeding the crops in May. He married in May and passed away on May 24, 2019. Some of his last words to family were instructions to leave his side at the hospital and go home to seed the crop. Art had an inviting smile, a welcoming and kind personality and was a story teller. He could talk with neighbours for hours unless it was seeding or harvest. When the work was done, however, there was catch up visiting time. He was also a genuine jokester which over the years his family experienced especially his nephews, nieces, children and grandchildren. Left to cherish his memory are children Debra (Ron), Robbie, and Ricky (Karen); six grandchildren Jaron and Derrick Wensley; Janessa and Lenay Walger; and Kaylyn and Graham Walger along with five great-grandchildren. A Funeral Service was held at 1:00 p.m., June 3, 2019 from the Camrose United Church, with Rev. Mary Ann Pastuck officiating. Inurnment has taken place in the Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Art’s Phone 780-672-2121 memory may be made to the Camrose United Church, or to the “Dedicated service since 1906” charity of one’s choice. City finding solutions to broom bristle concern Continued from page 24

“The second option we investigated was the use of high powered air blowing devices that attach to the front of our existing equipment that blows the snow away with air,” said Poole A final option considered by the City is to still use the brooms, however after the snow melts and prior to the bristles being moved away with run off or rain, the City would contact not-for-profit community organizations with the proposal of paying them to clean the bristles up as a fund raising initiative. “This would

benefit the City and the organizations and wouldn’t be a large cost.” The goal of all the options is to maintain clean and clear trails and ensure harmful debris does not end up in water bodies. Camrose residents and avid walkers of the City trail system, Bill Sears and Kevin Lang are two dedicated champions of bristle picking and both have expressed their concerns to the City. Realizing this is an unintended consequence of the method the city is using, Sears wondered if there

wasn’t an alternative solution to plowing trails and therefore brought the concern to light. Both Sears and Lang also voiced concerns that the bristles could eventually end up in the water sheds and water bodies, causing both environmental and City infrastructure issues. Working together with the City, residents are playing important roles in ensuring Camrose remains one of the most beautiful places to live and that our natural resources are protected for many years to come.

Honour your departed friend or relative …with a memorial gift that will do good in their name forever.

OLMP celebrates graduate masterpieces By Lori Larsen

On Thursday, May 23, Our Lady of Mount Pleasant (OLMP) graduands took to the stage at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre for the formal cap and gown ceremonies and passing out of certificates of the Class of 2019 Graduation Celebrations. O L M P 2019 valedictorian Cassandra Baska, in reference to the Elk Island Catholic School Division graduation theme, quoted from Ephesians 2:10, “We are all God’s masterpiece”, she said. “The creation of a painting can be used as a parallel to describe the journey we are all about to embark on. There is a blank canvas, the foundation built and provided by our parents and Submitted those closest to us.” OLMP valedictorian Cassandra Baska On Friday, advised graduands to May 24, during begin painting their the second part own masterpiece of the OLMP journey. 2019 Graduation, family, friends, teachers and staff gathered at the Camrose Regional Exhibition to witness a parade of sharply dressed graduands taking their place at the front of the room and hearing from a number of speakers wishing them well. Master of Ceremonies Jenna Sand and Sam Fairless greeted the crowd, enlightening them with a few fun jokes and musings of 12 years of schooling.

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster Masters of Ceremonies Jenna Sand, left and Sam Fairless kept the evening rolling.

In a touching tribute to parents, Kessler Freadrich and Jocelyn Marohn thanked all parents and others who supported them through the years of school and continue to be their number one supporters. “We could not have concluded this chapter of our lives without you,” said Kessler. They recited a list of thank yous including rides to school, spending weekends watching sports and late nights helping with homework. “Thank you for being there through it all.” Guest speaker Brad Burns, past OLMP teacher from 2005-17, was unable to attend the ceremony but via video, offered words of wisdom, along with some good-hearted jabs at a few of the graduands. “This is an amazing group of students. They are all masterpieces.” Burns congratulated the graduands for being

outstanding members of, not only OLMP community, but Camrose and the world. “These students have been accepted into universities, colleges and his is an programs where they will amazing group go on and of students. Burns i nd icat ed that during his time at OLMP, he made wonderful friends and connections and wished the same for the graduates. “Hopefully with this graduating class, you will have some connections that will last a lifetime.” His parting advice to the graduands was, “Go and live and enjoy your life. Treat your body as a temple. Proof read your emails and texts and don’t reply to ALL. Put your phones down once in a while, lift your head up and look around, what you will see is quite beautiful. You are not entitled to anything you have to work for what you get and work hard. Learn from Lori Larsen, your mistakes. Work to live and Camrose Booster not live to work. Badry began with a heartfelt and loving congratulations to the graduates of 2019. “There aren’t the right words to explain how, from the moment we enrolled you in preschool or kindergarten, it was both joyful and stressful. We were so proud to watch you become part of a social group that would shape and stretch you into the individual you would become, but at the same time it took all the courage we had to not stress about the challenges that laid ahead.” In conclusion, Johnson said, “As parents we held your hand as you walked into your first day of school and as you graduate, we will always be here for you.” Rounding up the evening Master of Ceremonies, Sam Fairless wowed the crowd with a rocking musical interlude on electric guitar followed by a slide presentation of ‘then and now’ photos of the graduands.

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough

Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Animal shelter looking for good homes and donations By Lori Larsen

Imagine the joy of giving a cat or kitten a forever home. Camrose and Area Animal Shelter Society is more than willing to help you out with that wish and have a clowder of cats/kittens available for adoption. Presently, the shelter is home to 39 cats/kittens either ready or getting ready to be adopted out to a loving family. There are typically between 45 to 60 cats in care at any given time. “We are adopting cats out weekly,” said Shelter volunteer and treasurer Lynn Horsman. As a not-for-profit organization, the Shelter relies heavily on the goodwill of supporters who donate funds, items and/or time to ensure the Shelter can continue doing the important work of providing for

Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster This little fellow is waiting for a forever home.

Camrose and area homeless cats. “We are doing a great job of fundraising–our donations are still up where they were last year,”

explained Horsman. “Our bottle drives brought in approximately $10,000 last year and they continue to be a main fund raiser.” Bottles can be donated

year round at one of the Shelter’s drop off locations, including Hauser Home Hardware Building Centre and Camrose Pet Valu. Bottle drives are also held in the Cornerstone Mall parking lot, outside Pet Valu. Just look for a white cube van and the Camrose Animal Shelter sandwich board sign. If you’re planning on doing a little spring cleaning, support a good cause and donate your empties. Recently, the Shelter received charity status and is now looking for a volunteer who would be willing to write for grants, a vital part of helping to keep the Shelter viable. They are also able to give tax deductible receipts. “We are also looking for a person who would assist with fund raising initiatives,” said Horsman. “

The fourth annual Pet Expo will take place on Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Cornerstone Mall parking lot, just south of Safeway. The Shelter is accepting applications for pet related vendors to set up during the Expo. On June 12, the Shelter will be holding its annual general meeting beginning at 7 p.m. at the Shelter (Bay 8, 4617-41 Street). The Shelter graciously accepts donations of cat related items (blankets, collars, litter) and food, and is always looking for volunteers. For more information, visit the Shelter during open hours–Thursdays 1 until 4 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., visit the Facebook page, email camroseanimalshel ter@gmail.com, or text 780-608-0091.

Trees giving back By Lori Larsen

On Thursday, June 6 at 7 p.m., join the Camrose Wildlife Stewardship Society and others for a presentation by Dr. Greg King on the Values of Camrose’s Urban Forest, to be held at the Stoney Creek Centre (5320-39 Avenue). King will be demonstrating the important role Camrose’s urban forests play. At some point, attendees will be invited to take a nature walk and learn more about trees and vegetation in the area. King is an assistant professor of environmental science at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus. “With the growing population of urban areas in Canada, urban forests play a vital role in the health of the environment,” said King. “These roles include reducing energy usage, intercepting storm-
