Saturday, June 15, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Stoney Creek Centre, 5320-39 Avenue, Camrose. Each year, the seminars, displays, speakers and interaction with experts in the field allow additional people to enjoy the fascinating hobby of attracting and caring for purple martins. In addition to knowledge conveyed specific to purple martins, this year’s organizing committee is thrilled to welcome Lu Carbyn, a retired wildlife biologist, who will talk about the perils of bird migration; and Dr. Dorothy Hill, a biology professor from Mount Royal University, who will inform and enlighten on the topic of bird ecology.

An un-Canadian confession
I’m about to be un-Canadian. Here’s my sordid until-now-neverdisclosed-in-public secret. I’m not interested in hockey. I’m not interested in football. I’m not interested in basketball. Actually, I’m not interested in any professional sport. Not only am I not interested, I honestly don’t get it. A millionaire 22-year-old is really good at using a bent stick to put a chunk of black rubber into a net. And this matters? People get excited or depressed about this. People pay hard-earned money to watch this. Municipalities spend millions of dollars of local tax money and disrupt entire chunks of cities to subsidize and support arenas or fields for sports teams owned by billionaires. And people I know who complain about taxes think that’s good use of public money. I don’t get it. I care about how our local school’s hockey or football or basketball team does. But that isn’t really about the sport. It’s about us; our kids, our school, our community. Professional sports? There’s nothing local or “us” about it except the location of the arena or field.

For the owners, it’s just another business with the goal of increasing profit. I have no objection to profit. But why should this kind of business get subsidized or supported by public money when other kinds of business are not? The players aren’t local–or if they are, it’s an anomaly. Players are commodities. Their owners buy and sell, and trade them. In some sports, the players wear protective gear, but that doesn’t mean their owners or leagues actually care about their well-being. Injuries? Concussions? No worries. Patch ’em up and get ’em back in the game. Brag about how tough they are. I don’t get why anyone cares about whether they win or lose. It’s nothing to do with anything that’s truly local. And yet I know people whose mood is profoundly affected by whether this year’s collection of hired commodities wins or loses “games” they “play” with other collections of hired commodities. None of this feels like games or play. It’s just business, using assets to generate profit. ***
So why am I even thinking about this on a gorgeous June day with lush green trees and flowers blooming and people walking their dogs, enjoying beautiful weather? Earlier today, I spent about 90 minutes in a café which had TV screens in various locations. Anywhere I looked, there were snippets of replayed professional sports or talking heads discussing sports. What could be so important that it was worthy of 90 minutes’ discussion? Well! Would this player be in the next game, what with the broken jaw? The consensus was ‘yes’. Should that call have been made? Controversial. What would the line-up likely be in the next game? Disagreement about what the coach should do. Which team would likely pay how much for two defense players in upcoming draft picks? Apparently all this really matters!

I couldn’t help it. I thought of someone I know who studied for several years to qualify as a healthcare practitioner. She looks after sick people and elderly people and people who have physical and mental disabilities. She loves what she does and she’s good at it. She doesn’t actually have a position because one-way care facilities try to control their budgets (public tax money) by reducing the number of “line positions” (positions that are paid a full-time salary every month). They count on people like her–trained and competent–to be available on demand. She doesn’t know from month to month what her income will be. Depends on the number of shifts. Our culture has decided the service she provides, caring for vulnerable people, is worth maybe a few thousand, but sometimes only a few hundred dollars a month. Our culture has decided that people who can use a bent stick to put a chunk of rubber in a net are worth at least multiple thousands and sometimes millions of dollars per month. Go figure. ***
I’d love to hear from you! If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

Move Your Mood By Murray Green
You can move your mood right here in Camrose. Move Your Mood is a free, research-based, healthy lifestyle program for children, youth and families promoting the benefits of physical activity, healthy eating and positive coping to enhance positive mental and physical wellness. In Camrose, the program is co-facilitated by Tammy Richard, mental health promotion facilitator for Alberta Health Services, Pamela Boyson, a registered dietician with Alberta Health Services and Carley Ritz, a mental health capacity building wellness coach with the Battle River School Division. Move Your Mood in Camrose was offered by Alberta Health Services in partnership with the Battle River School Division Mental Health Capacity Building, the Camrose and Area Risk Education Coalition, University of Alberta Augustana Campus Fitness Center, and community partners. Sixteen students in Grade 5 and 6 took part in the eight-week program from April 18 to June 6. “Move Your Mood originated in Red Deer and has been additionally piloted in Camrose. Feedback to date suggests the program was successful and we plan to offer it again in the fall,” said Tammy. “We invite other communities to partner with AHS in expanding the program.” People who want more information about the program can contact Tammy at 780-672-1181 or tammy. richard@ahs.ca. Bullying Enns lifts spirits for young boy in Camrose By Lori Larsen
Thunder rolled into Camrose on June 6, but not with a storm. It was a group of amazing, kindhearted bikers–riders with the Bullying Enns initiative, who make it their mission to show up in numbers to support people, specifically children and youth, who are being bullied.
as a humble, yet all too important, quest of Steve Enns to show his support and caring for a young boy who was being bullied in school. “I just wanted to do something for this boy,” said Steve. “I put out the word asking if there were any other bikers who wanted to join me in a ride, and
Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster With kickstands up and engines roaring, Bullying Enns motorcycle riders showed incredible support for nineyear-old Emmett Prost of Camrose, pictured on the back of Camrose Bullying Enns rider Gord McLean’s motorcycle.
Members of the Bullying Enns (spearheaded by Steve Enns), a biker group from the Edmonton area along with members from a growing connection in Camrose headed up by Gord McLean, roared their motorcycle engines to show off for nine-year-old Emmett Prost and lift him up onto a bike for a ride of a lifetime, while lifting his spirits higher. Bullying Enns began
help lift this boy’s spirit.” That simple gesture has since grown into a provincially-recognized initiative to build awareness about the serious affects bullying can have on anyone, let alone vulnerable children. Approximately 10 kicked-up bikes roared into the school parking lot to pick up Emmett. While to some, the sight might be a little intimidat-
him and wave with such exuberance, I thought he might fall off the bike, but clearly Gord (or Gordie to which he is fondly referred) had him secure. After a tour around Camrose, the group parked their bikes in front of the 48th Avenue Dairy Queen and set their kickstands. Leather-clad, tough-acting, but sincerely one of the nicest groups with whom I have had the honour to roll, all sat around while Emmett was presented with a huge ice cream cake in celebration of his recent ninth birthday. “I was made aware of Emmett’s situation by a mutual friend and then read Emmett’s mother’s post asking for help,” said Gord After meeting with Emmett’s mother, Gord felt he had to do something to help, so contacted Steve Enns to arrange for a ride. Unfortunately weather in February is not exactly conducive to bikes, so the Bullying Enns group s h o w e d up with a limousine instead. “It is not the same as doing it on bikes, but turns heads and helps bring aw a r e n e s s Bullying Enns founder Steve Enns (from to bullying,” Edmonton area), back, and Camrose member Gord McLean, seated middle, along with the said Gord. E n n s Bull mascot present Emmett Prost, front, with an ice cream cake to celebrate his ninth was able to arrange the birthday.
ing, the mandate of the group is not to use scare tactics, but to demonstrate that everyone should have people who care. With helmet on head and a smile as broad as his face, Emmett saddled up behind Gord McLean and the group were off for a tour. In an effort to get a feel for the impact this group has on bullied individuals, I was honoured to ride along on Steve’s bike. We took up tow behind Gord and Emmett and it soon became apparent that this young nine-yearold felt a sense of belonging and support. He would look back at the 11 or so other bikes streaming down the street behind
pickup of t-shirts, teddy bears, wristbands, stickers and tattoos for Emmett to hand out at school on Pink Shirt Day (Feb. 27). One of the future goals of Bullying Enns is to do presentations in schools on the effects of bullying and to help deliver a message that everyone is unique in their own way and that bullying should not be tolerated. Gord did his first ride with Bullying Enns a couple years prior for his own grandson who was suffering from bullying. Then last year, he completed the ride for another local boy. “Bullying Enns is a group of people from all walks of life who have a love of motorcycles, brought together by Steve Enns to help kids be kids and support the parents when they are feeling alone,” explained Gord. “Once you get involved with this group, you are family–brothers and sisters willing to get involved and stand up with and for little brothers and little sisters who need help and support.” I left the crowd gathered around Emmett and his now lit cake, all wishing him a happy birthday– no doubt, one of his happiest. “If we make a difference in one child’s life and save them from the pain of bullying, we have succeeded,” said Steve. For more information on the Bullying Enns initiative, visit Steve Enns facebook page m.facebook. com/steve.enns.56.

ÉCKS starts soccer academy By Murray Green
University of Alberta Augustana Campus soccer coach Tom McManus will be partnering with École Charlie Killam School vice principal Reid Lansing in offering a soccer academy next year from February until June. “In the three years that I have been here, we have been looking at ways to expand the academics and add to that programming. It gives the students who have a passion for different sports to learn more and pursue them,” said Reid. “We didn’t know where to start, but with Tom’s expertise, we kicked around the idea at Jack Stuart or at Charlie Killam. With the numbers in soccer in Camrose, it made sense to have a soccer academy.” Currently, the school offers a hockey academy in the first semester from September to January and the additional programming would be another option for students. École Charlie Killam School announced plans to add an additional sports academy for students wishing to pursue sport specific skill development and physical training alongside their academic achievement. “I came to Camrose about three years ago and after two months, people asked me about an academy because I ran one in BC and in Ontario. I think its great to have an academy and hope we can get it at least by the end of June,” said Tom. Coach McManus brings a wealth of highlevel coaching experience, including Canada’s national women’s soccer team, numerous Canadian university teams and Canadian professional teams. Tom is currently the head coach of both the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Augustana Campus.
“To start, we will mirror what we are doing in the hockey academy and then evolve from there. The plan is to have three soccer classes per week and two fitness and conditioning classes per week,” explained Reid. “Tom would be in charge of soccer skill development and then we will have a fitness coach on the other days.” “To a certain extent, final numbers will dictate the structure of the program. However, the intent is for BRSA to operate very much like our established hockey program, where BRSA training sessions will take the place of regular physical education classes. Every week during the second semester, students in BRSA can expect to receive two to three hours of skill development and instruction from Tom and his assistants, as well as two classes devoted to strength and conditioning training. “I want children to take the next step to become a more proficient player. It is a stepping stone in order to play better. The players are going to blossom in games and be better. We start with basics indoors, while indoor soccer is still going on. It will grow into outdoor soccer and into their seasons prior to provincials. I’ve watched provincials here in Camrose and there are really talented players. They just need to take the next step and we have to capitalize on those talents. It is a great time (second semester) to get the academy set up and get going with soccer,” said Tom. BRSA classes will be scheduled to start before the regular school day and immediately after lunch to facilitate adequate training sessions and transportation, when necessary, while still enabling students to
attend their other regularly scheduled classes. “The academy is an attraction for students who have a passion for the game,” said Reid. “The more diverse programs we have, the more students are attracted to our school. To have another program that students are excited about is an important piece in increasing interest in school. Why soccer? Well, it is an extension of our academy that started with hockey. We want to support our student athletes,” said Reid. Interest from at least 30 students in Grades 6 to 8 is needed in order to make the program viable. “It will be a big challenge with students having various levels of knowledge of the game. I want to keep it at a high level and support the other ones until they catch up. We will be working with lesser skilled players to bring their level up and then keep pushing everyone to improve. Some might think they know it all, but will find out they need to work hard too. No, they don’t know everything, but they will learn a lot more,” said Tom. Improving the players with leadership skills also has other benefits. “Anytime you can build stronger relationships in the community, it helps the community as a whole. We have a strong relationship between BRSD, Augustana and minor sports,” said Reid. Students possessing a love for soccer and a desire to improve their sport-specific skills are encouraged to fill out an intent form and drop it off at the École Charlie Killam School office or email it to rlansing@brsd.ab.ca before the end of the school year.

It’s tough to say goodbye in fact, it’s even more difficult to leave this wonderful community than we had anticipated. It has been an honour to have served you in the role of Police Chief since 2017. I’m extremely proud of the dedicated and conscientious professionals who make up your Camrose Police Service. I’ve enjoyed a tremendous working relationship with City Hall, the Mayor, the Police Commission, Council, and many, many partners in the community. Father’s lessons on life By Lori Larsen
Parenting is neither easy nor predictable. In fact, many parents will attest to just the opposite. It is the most challenging and unpredictable job, however, also the most important. Once a year, we celebrate the hard work of parents on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, even though the gifts parents give us reach far beyond what could possibly be summed up in one day. However, when we are young, sometimes what our parents had to do in order to keep us safe and ensure our growth wasn’t always deemed as welcome. Fathers can be especially fathomable with their disciplinary duties and advice. But more often than not, as we grow older, we come to realize the value of those life lessons. Camrosian PJ Stasko, now father of two delightful, energetic and joyful little girls, six-year-old Quinn and four-year-old Aubrey, has come to realize what all those years of trials and tribulations, teachings and tests that his father Don instilled in him mean. Father’s lessons

“My dad would often say, ‘When you lose, say little. When you win, say less’,” said PJ, about the lessons on sportsmanship passed on by his father. “While it may apply to sportsmanship, it is also a golden rule on the way you treat other people.” PJ is quick to admit that is father is one of his best friends and has been and continues to be a fountain of lessons and information. “Whether I wanted it or still want it,” he smiled, “Or not.” The bond between a father and child is undeniable, yet often silent and undetectable. Usually, fathers are viewed as the quiet contributors, unless their voices need to be heard, the heroes who young children envision in capes, preparing to swoop them up and remove them from harm’s way. Fathers are often the providers who work long days, yet still have time to coach little league or appear in the front row of a dance recital. While roles may be changing, the premise is still the same. A father has the ability to have a powerful

Enjoy art in the park By Lori Larsen
Enjoy a wonderful, fun-filled event amidst the beautiful backdrop of Mirror Lake during the annual Arts and Recreation in the Park event to be held on June 22 in and around Mirror Lake from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. In partnership with the City of Camrose and Camrose Arts Society, and as a result of grants from the Arts Council and support from local organizations, this is a free event packed full of activities. Located just outside the Bill Fowler Centre will be the Kids’ Corner, an area dedicated to entertaining the younger attendees. It will feature games and crafts hosted by the Camrose Boys and Girls Club, theatre games hosted by AboutTime Productions, the Camrose Public Library Book Bike and Life Cycle, a magician and face painting. The Mirror Lake Express will be available, offering free rides for all ages to enjoy. To ensure the younger guests get a feel for the arts, Wideman’s Graffiti Wall will be set up so they can work on their own masterpieces. “There will also be a scavenger hunt,” noted City of Camrose arts director Jane Cherry-Lemire. “We want to encourage attendees to complete the entire circuit which runs from the Bill Fowler Centre across the foot bridge to the gazebo area and Chuck MacLean Arts Centre.” Besides getting your physical activity walking around the lake and area, there will be interactive yoga and function fitness to keep your motor running, and a class in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in which people can participate. Tai Chi and belly dancing demonstrations will also keep you entertained. “Infinite Imagination will be doing improv and there will be four stages set up for busker-style entertainment.” Camrose Camera Club, celebrating their 60th anniversary, will be hosting a slide and static display in the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. and from 4:30 until 5:30 p.m. A minimal admission cost will be charged at the door. “One of the things we are excited about trying
this year is an Art Scramble,” said Cherry-Lemire. This unique event begins with group one “first round” at noon in the parking lot just west of the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre, behind Wild Rose Co-op grocery store. Participants in the Art Scramble will take part in two “first rounds” of six to 12 participants, each creating onthe-spot masterpieces. Votes will be cast by audience members (one vote per round) for their favourite painting which will determine which participants move into the final round. The top two voted participants will compete in the final round, where votes will once again determine the all around winner, who will take home a prize package. Anyone wishing to participate in the Art Scramble is required to register. (Registration forms are available on the Camrose Arts Society website at http://camroseartssociety. ca/.) Participants will be supplied with paint, easels, canvasses and water containers. The only supply they will be allowed to bring are brushes (no other tools). This is a wonderful opportunity for budding artists to showcase their talents and sell their pieces. “Most importantly, this is a chance for artists to come out, meet other artists and have a blast,” said Cherry-Lemire. There will be some food concessions available during the event, or you could bring your own picnic lunch and enjoy all that Mirror Lake area has to offer. If you are a little parched from all the walking, drop by one of the lemonade stands being operated by participants in the Lemonade Day initiative. The Bill Fowler Centre parking lot, as well as the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre parking lot, will be closed to traffic and parking. However, there is plenty of street parking available in the area.“We want to encourage people to be outside and enjoy a variety of art forms,” concluded Cherry-Lemire. For more information on the Arts and Recreation in the Park, visit the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre or telephone 780-672-9949.

Mixed together in landfills, these chemicals can be dangerous – to the workers and to the environment. Camrose Spring Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up will be held on Friday, June 14 and Saturday, June 15, 2019 at the PUBLIC WORKS YARDS. Keep your materials in their original containers. If the container is broken or cracked, place it inside a leak-proof package and label it. If you discover jars or cans of unidentified chemicals, take them to the Round-Up and tell a staff person you are unsure of the contents. Any container that cautions about careful use of the product or disposal of the container should be included in the Hazardous Waste Round-Up. All the materials collected at the Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up will be collected, classified, manifested, packed and transported by trained personnel and taken to the Alberta Special Waste Management Facility near Swan Hills where the waste will be taken for proper treatment and disposal. The cost of treatment will be borne by Alberta Environment. Falling Through the Cracks: Greg’s Story is a powerful film about an Alberta man, Greg Price, who died unexpectedly on May 19, 2012 at the young age of 31, three days after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous testicle. It is a documentary short film that relates Greg’s journey through the health care system. Camrose Primary Care Network (PCN), in partnership with the Greg Price family, will be presenting a screening of Falling Through the Cracks: Greg’s Story film on June 20 at the Augustana Chapel located at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus. The doors will open at 6:15 p.m. with the film beginning at 6:45 p.m. The 30-minute film offers a glimpse into Greg Price’s short life and follows his journey as he navigates through the health care system that eventu-
ally ended in his too-soon death. While the story itself invokes sadness, Greg’s family, along with many involved in the creation of the film, hopes it will inspire positive change and improvement to the health care system. Following the film, a discussion panel consisting of members of Greg’s family, Dr. Lindsay Bick, physician lead for the Camrose Inpatient Care Program, and PCN executive director Stacey Strilchuk will be available for approximately one hour to speak and hear from audience members. To learn more about the making of the film and Greg’s story, visit http:// gregswings.ca/. Anyone wishing to attend the event is asked to RSVP to the PCN by telephoning 780-608-4927 or emailing pam.fankhanel @camrosepcn.com.

Sons of Pioneers concert By Murray Green
The Sons of the Pioneers are synonymous with the ultimate in western music. For decades, the premier western singing group has musically painted unforgettable images and stories of horses, cattle, cowboys, night herds, tall timber, cool water, canyons and prairies. Sons of Pioneers will be stopping in Camrose for a performance at the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre on Monday, June 17 at 7:30 p.m. “We are celebrating 85 years of western music with this tour in Canada,” said Dusty Rogers, a member of the Sons of Pioneers. “My dad started this group in 1934 and we have been going ever
since. It has been a labour of love for us to continue to celebrate western music that my dad started so many years ago.” Their original songs like “Tumbling Tumbleweeds”, “Cool Water” and “Ghost Riders in the Sky” are classics, forever entwined into the lore and mystique of the west. Both “Tumbleweeds” and “Cool Water” have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. First started in 1934 by Roy Rogers and the gifted songwriters Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer, the group garnered national and international fans through appearances in almost 100 western films during the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s.
“I don’t know too many guys who get to join their father’s group. It’s an honour to be in the same band 85 years later,” explained Dusty, who is now 72 himself. “We owe the past 50 members for keeping this group together. When a member moves on, it is a task to find the right person to fit the group and who knows the old western music style. We have four- or fivepart harmonies and yodel in harmony.” In 2018, Roy Rogers Jr. joined the band. “People love the harmonies and that is why it has lasted 85 years and we want to pass it on from generation to generation. When people come to the show, they expect to hear music they heard when they were young-
KATELYN! Love your family er. And, that is exactly what they get with us because we have carried on those traditions,” Dusty added. According to their trail boss Tommy Nallie who joined the group in the 1980, “We are honoured to be returning to Saskatchewan and Alberta, Canada this summer. We were parade marshals for the Calgary Stampede in the 1990s.” Nallie said, “Every concert is pure cowboy music packed with our timeless hits, solid western swing and a good measure of comedy and banter. Each of the six members share the vocals
and instrumentals.” Part of the hallmark sound comes from acoustic fiddles, mandolin, upright bass, and lead and rhythm guitars. “My mom and dad did about 100 shows on television from 1952 to 1957, and I was in a few of them. It was in reruns until 1964. There were people who grew up at that time and remember those shows, so it is good to hear from them. I never get tired of hearing those stories. My dad said if I ever get tired of it, get out of the business, but I haven’t been tired of it. Continued on page 19

Sons of Pioneers Continued from page 18
“It’s been great spending some time with the audience after the show. People comment that they knew my dad, or watched the television show. Going to Saskatchewan and Alberta is absolutely terrific. The fans are so appreciative of what we do. A lot of them are farmers and ranchers and some don’t get to see a live show like this very often. I spend as much time as it takes to meet everyone after the show,” said Dusty. “That is our reward for doing the show, listening to all of the stories they remember about my dad and Dale Evans.” People often comment how difficult it must be for Roy “Dusty” Rogers, Jr. to stand on stage in his father’s shadow. Dusty quickly responds, “As Roy’s son, it is not my job to stand in my father’s shadow; but it is my job to lengthen it and that is what I try to do on stage every day.” Dusty lends his rich, upper baritone vocals, singing lead and harmony. “The great thing about the Sons of Pioneers is that we just don’t have one lead singer. We all sing and provide the harmonies. We work well together,” said Dusty, who is often takes the lead. “I love it. I have been blessed to still have my voice.”

Griffiths adds business truck to his collection By Murray Green
Robin Griffiths of Galahad owns a polished 1966 Ford F100 custom truck that is strictly business. “I purchased the truck last year at the Rockin’ Red Deer from a very nice fellow from Olds, a guy that was thinning out his herd because he is getting older,” explained Robin. “I was looking for a shop truck for our new antique business in Galahad. It was sitting out there in the parking lot in the rain and it just attracted us to it. Unbeknownst to me, my wife had already looked at it with her girlfriend earlier in the day. When I told her about it, she said she knew the truck and that I should phone him up because we were in agreement here. It would suit our purposes really well,” shared Robin. “It is a really nice truck. I added the tonneau cover and cleaned it up a little bit, but it has just been a really nice truck for us. I upgraded the brakes on it – discs front and rear, and added power steering. It has a rebuilt 353 motor that is super clean,” continued Robin. “The mural on the hood (under) is a picture of the gas station (in Olds) that he worked at when he was a kid. When he built the truck, over a course of 10 years, he put that mural on it to remind him of his roots.” The truck was taken care of over the years. “The mileage on the truck is just

over 31,800. It was parked on a farm. He bought it from the original owner. The first owner used it a little bit before he passed away. The son ended up with it in an estate and didn’t know what to do with it, so he sold it to the guy I bought it from, who had it for about 12 years. He did a 10-year restoration in it. He had about eight other vehicles that I know of when I was talking to him,
FUN FACTS
In 1965, the F-Series was given a significant midcycle redesign that carried into the 1966 models. A completely new platform, including the Twin I-Beam front suspension, was introduced that would be used until 2016 on the F-250/350. Additionally in 1965-66, the Ranger name made its first appearance on a Ford pickup; previously a base model of the Edsel, it was now used to denote a high-level styling package for F-Series pickups. The F-Series also included a four-door crew cab model. The 240 cubic inch (3.9 L) and 300 cubic inch (4.9 L) straight six was introduced. With the introduction of the 208 hp (155 kW; 211 PS) 352 cubic inch (5.8 L) FE V8, output surpassed 200 hp in the F-Series for the first time. The F-100 came in two versions: a chassis cab and pickup truck with a like-Ford F-Series third generation bed. The body remained largely unchanged, but the 1965 and 1966 models had the turn signals above the headlights.
so he was working on a few at a time. A very nice fellow and we are appreciative of the truck,” added Robin. “It is the nicest riding pickup that I have ever owned. It rides like a dream. I have four other cars that I have built. It takes a lot of money, time and effort to get a vehicle to this stage. I’ve built a couple, so I know that. So when I came across this one, I grabbed it and it was pretty much a turnkey vehicle.” Robin added murals on the doors to read Griffy’s Antiques for his new business venture. “It has an upgraded transmission four-speed to make it more cruisable on the highway. My uncle John had mid-’60s Fords when I was a kid growing up, so I remember them and find them to be a nice looking truck. “I have another story about this truck. At Rockin’ Red Deer 2012, I had my 1961 Pontiac Laurentian there and someone did a story on my car. I talked to him about this truck. It was
parked behind my car when the guy was doing the interview. I was looking a the pictures and you can see my 1961 and this truck in the same picture,” shared Robin. “It was a coincidence, like it was meant to be.” The truck will be a business truck. “I can’t imagine
doing much more to it. I want to keep it this year.” Dave Dunbar from Camrose painted the logos on the door for Robin. “I’m just going to go to a few shows until we get our business going. We plan on opening this summer.”

Camrose hockey player Parker Kelly had a very successful season, even if he wasn’t part of the Memorial Cup winning squad. Kelly signed with the Ottawa Senators last year, but went back to the Prince Albert Raiders for another season of junior to prepare him for the next step in hockey. He was a member of the first-place Raiders and then went on to win the Western Hockey League title in the playoffs. “It was a pretty cool experience. We beat Red Deer and Saskatoon and started to feel good about ourselves. We didn’t play well the first two games against Edmonton, but we came back to win the series in six games. Vancouver won the first game in Prince Albert, we won game three and four in Vancouver, but it went seven games and we won in overtime at home, something you dream about as a kid growing up. It is something I’ll never forget,” explained Parker. The host Halifax Mooseheads were the first team to earn a spot in the finals of the Memorial Cup championship, while the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and Guelph Storm played in the semifinal. The Huskies won that game and went on to beat Halifax as well. The Prince Albert Raiders were eliminated after going 0-3 in the first round. “It was weird. We were tired from the seventh game of the series, but as a team it was hard to refocus for the Memorial Cup. The time change and being tired were a factor, but we are not looking for excuses. We did the best we could and came up on the wrong end of a few bounces,” shared Parker. “Rouyn-Noranda worked hard, all of the teams were great, but Rouyn worked the hardest and deserved to win, so that was nice for them.” Western Hockey League champions have struggled in recent years
at the Memorial Cup and this time it was no different. The 2014 Edmonton Oil Kings were the last Memorial Cup champions from the WHL. “Going to the Memorial Cup was huge for me. Winning is everything and winning the WHL championship is a great experience. Getting a ring and lifting a trophy over my head is something I’ll take to the next level and I’ll use that experience.” Parker could play another year of junior. “I want to take a step forward and play in the Ottawa system, whether that is Ottawa or Belleville (American Hockey League affiliate) next year. Every summer is important for training, but this one will be important to focus on the little things to do better to get to the next level. I want to get stronger, increase my speed and protect the puck better – little things I need to work on to improve for the next level,” added Parker. “There are different roles in hockey and, going into next year, I have to be prepared for whatever role I’m asked to do. It doesn’t matter to me, I’ve been in every situation in junior and I know what to do in each role. This will be my third year going to Ottawa for camp, so I’ll know what is expected of me,” he said. “Going to development camp helps you to identify what you need to do to prepare for rookie and the main camp. They are a rebuilding team and my mindset going into camp is that anything can happen.” Parker enjoyed his time in Camrose Minor Hockey before moving on to a higher level. “I played all the way from initiation to bantam. I have had a lot of good coaches along the way like Chad Kendall, Tim Green and Brandon Heck who have been instrumental in helping me along the way,” concluded Parker. “Without minor hockey, I wouldn’t be in this position to move on to a higher level.”

Health Canada has declared June as ALS (amyotropic lateral sclerosis) Awareness Month, and is encouraging communities to spread awareness about ALS and raise funds to assist those affected by the disease. In support of ALS research and initiatives to assist those living with and affected by the disease, Camrose and area residents are invited to join the ALS Society of Alberta Walk to End ALS on June 22, beginning at 11 a.m. at Mirror Lake. ALS is a rapid, always fatal neurodegenerative disease that attacks the nerves that are responsible for sending message to the brain. Those inflicted with the disease experience gradual loss of muscle control, mobility and motor skills, gradually leaving the person completely immobilized, with a loss of speech and eventual inability to swallow or breathe. Two to three Canadians lose their life to ALS every day and approximately 3,000 Canadians are living with the debilitating disease. Sadly, there is no known cause or cure for this devastating disease. However, through generous donations, the ALS Society of Alberta, a notfor-profit organization, dedicates funds to make each day the best possible for people living with and affected by ALS. Supporter of ALS Society of Alberta Cheryl Feth said, “ALS disease has touched our families’ lives more than it should touch anybody’s life. “Our family is a strong supporter of the ALS Society of Alberta because we experienced firsthand the wonderful support they gave to our loved one and extended family.” On May 30, Mayor Norm Mayer, joined by ALS Society (Camrose) Walk to End ALS, coordinator Cheryl Feth, signed a proclamation declaring June ALS Awareness Month.

Irmgard Elsa Lumpe (nee Müller) April 24, 1926 ~ June 1, 2019 Irmgard was born on April 24, 1926 in Mittweida, Germany to Elsa and Paul Müller. She was the second child with an older brother, Heinz, and younger sister, Inge. Growing up, she enjoyed learning how to bake and cook in Home Economics classes in school. She went on to Agricultural School and then to work. In her spare time, she enjoyed going to symphony concerts, the opera, live theatre, and listening to organ music. For some time, Irmgard corresponded with a young man, Bernhard Lumpe, from Canada. Bernhard knew Irmgard was the “right one” for him and arranged for Irmgard to come to Canada. In 1953, Irmgard travelled with Eva (a friend) to Canada. After arriving in Edmonton, Irmgard remained while Eva travelled on. Irmgard stayed with Leonard and Waltraud Lumpe (Bernhard’s brother and sister-in-law) and on September 5, 1953, Irmgard and Bernhard were married in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Edmonton, Alberta. Irmgard and Bernhard’s first home was in Rabbit Hill, Alberta. Their first daughter, Rebecca, was born and, knowing they would need a larger home, they built a new home in Jasper Place in 1959. Their second daughter, Bernice, arrived four years after Rebecca and their son, Ralph, four years after Bernice. In 1965, they purchased a farm in the Hay Lakes area. Farming, maintaining the household and raising children was not an easy life, but Irmgard often had a song in her heart and would sing, whistle or hum a tune. With Irmgard’s family in Europe, Bernhard’s relatives and many lifelong friends became Irmgard’s “family” in Canada. In Germany, she is survived by sister Inge Eckardt; her nephews Christoph Eckardt, Klaus Eckardt and Frieder Eckardt; and Heinz’s son, Bernd Müller. In Canada, she is survived by her children Rebecca Meyers, Bernice Tallin (Gary) and Ralph Meyers (Margot); her grandchildren Melissa Rambeau and Christina Meyers, and Scott Stotyn; and her niece Marion Labrie. She cherished her friendship with Mrs. Rita Lutz (a friend for over 65 years) and with the many relatives and friends who became her “family” in Canada. Irmgard was predeceased by her husband Bernhard; brother Heinz Müller; brother-in-law Joachim Eckardt; and sister-in-law Ursula Müller. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 from Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Hay Lakes, with Rev. Donald Bolstad officiating. Interment will take place in the Our Saviour Lutheran Cemetery. To send condolences, please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at Tofield Funeral Chapel, 5107-49 Street, Tofield, AB. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
John ‘Jake’ Laurie Jacobs Jake was born on May 22, 1954 in Camrose, AB, and died on May 30, 2019 in Calgary, AB. (He passed away suddenly surrounded by his family.) John is survived by his wife Donna of 43 years; his girls Terine (Derek) Forrester and Penny (Scotte) Titus; sister Val (Merv) Zwicker; mother-in-law Betty Hansen; sisters-in-law Carol (John) Zerkee and Lorraine Hansen; brothersin-law Ted Hansen and Tim (Sandra) Hansen; many loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. He is predeceased by his father Ches Jacobs; his mother Ollie Jacobs; sisters Sharon Ferguson and Sue Jacobs; father-in-law Ted Hansen; and brotherin-law Danny Ferguson. Jake took pretty much most of his schooling in Camrose except for his Grade 12 when he went to Medicine Hat to play hockey. He graduated from Medicine Hat High School. The next year, he played in Drumheller for the Drumheller Falcons. John was employed with the Department of Transportation for a short time – climbing towers in NWT, BC and Alberta to change bulbs. (These towers ranged from 100 feet to 650 feet.) A fall from a glide path tower in Fort St. John ended that career. He then settled back in Camrose and worked for the Carpet Bin. John came to Stettler in 1977 where he was employed with the Carpet Bin which later became Stettler Flooring and Paint. In 1985, John began a 33-year career with Peavey Mart in Stettler as Store Manager. In 1999, he became Product Manager at Peavey Industries in Red Deer. In 2009, John came back to work at the store in Stettler. He retired in January 2018. The community knew him as Mr. Peavey Mart. Upon retirement, during the winter months, John volunteered at the Food Bank which he enjoyed and, on the weekends, you would find him at the rink where he continued to mentor and supervise the young officials. Once hockey season was over, he could hardly wait for golf season to begin. He became part of the grounds crew at Pheasantback Golf Course. He was in his glory as he now had a purpose to get up in the morning again every day. John has always been involved with sports. Hockey, football and golf were his passions. He played minor hockey in Camrose, had a stint with the Medicine Hat Tigers and Drumheller Falcons, and then played senior hockey for the Camrose Maroons and the Stettler Sabres. Growing up in Camrose, once athletes reached a certain level of hockey, they were required to take their turn officiating the younger levels. John began his officiating career in 1967 and attained his Level 4. He served as an official at multiple different levels. John was involved as a Coordinator and Instructor with the Hockey Alberta Development Camp for Officials for 25 years and helped groom young linesmen and referees. He was Zone Chairman for the North Central Zone and later became Provincial Chairman of the Hockey Alberta Referees Council. He was the recipient of numerous awards including Hockey Alberta’s Hockey Development Award, the President’s Award, the Ernie Boruk Award, the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation Award and was inducted into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame. He also became a Life Member of the Referee’s Council. The Celebration of Jake’s Life was held on Friday, June 7, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in the Blue Arena at the Stettler Recreation Center, 6202-44 Avenue, Stettler, Alberta. In lieu of flowers, send donations to the Stettler Minor Hockey Association, Stettler Food Bank or a charity of your choice. Condolences maybe sent to the family at www.stettlerfuneralhome.com.

Barbara Caroline Maier August 26, 1933 ~ June 4, 2019 Barbara Caroline Maier passed away peacefully on June 4, 2019, surrounded by family, at the Louise Jensen Care Centre in Camrose, Alberta. Barbara was born on August 26, 1933 in Macklin, Saskatchewan to John Henry and Apollonia Sieben. She was the youngest of eighteen children. Barbara grew up on a farm near Cosine, Saskatchewan. After high school, she moved to Camrose where she worked and met Michael Lestus. They married in 1952, then moved to the Lestus family farm where they raised five boys. They continued farming until 1972, at which time they moved to Camrose. Michael passed away in 1979. Barbara continued working in the food industry until her retirement. She met Eduard Maier and they married in 1994. Sadly, they were just short of 25 happy years together. Barbara was a very hard worker. She never complained about living the farm life without modern conveniences. She needed an abundance of love and patience raising five boys and making sure they had their white shirts and polished shoes for Sunday church. Her company enjoyed the wonderful perogies, cabbage rolls, meatballs, cinnamon buns and other delights that she always had ready for whomever came to her door. Those same five boys always enjoyed the care packages sent home with them throughout the years. Barbara will always be loved, remembered and cherished by her husband Eduard Maier; her sister Augustine Evenson; sisterin-law Elizabeth Sieben; sons Gerald (Lauren), Wayne (Susan), Hubert (Lori), Perry’s wife Shelley and Roger (Karen); sixteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as her extended Maier family: Joe (Janice), Philomena (Mike), Angie (Danny), Armella (Tom) and Luisa (Bill); thirteen grandchildren; and seventeen greatgrandchildren. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, first husband, seven brothers, nine sisters and her son Perry. She will be greatly missed and our memories of her will never fade. A Prayer Vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 from the Burgar Memorial Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church (3605-50 Street, Camrose) with Rev. Joseph Jacobson officiating. Interment will take place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Barbara’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to STARS. Serving your community for over 110 years We, the family of
Vesta Bernice King …would like to say thank you to those who joined us in saying farewell to our dear mother. Mary Ann Pastuck shared a beautiful memorial service as we all said goodbye. Thank you, Mary Ann, for your leadership and compassion. Thank you, Bart Orr and the staff of Burgar Funeral Home, for all that you did to make the service at the gravesite and at the Rosalind Community Hall very special. We also appreciate your advice and leadership in carrying out all our responsibilities. Bart, you are absolutely amazing! Thank you to Chuck Gevers and staff of Mad Platter Catering for the lovely lunch you provided after the service. It was yummy! Mom spent many years in care facilities, so we want to thank all of the caregivers at Stoney Creek Lodge in Camrose, Providence Place in Daysland, Bashaw Meadows in Bashaw, and lastly, at Seasons in Camrose. As she would say, “Bless your little hearts.” We want to say a big thank you to her friends and colleagues at Rosalind School, Rosealta Lodge and all with whom she worked in the community of Rosalind and Camrose. In lieu of thank you cards for the many memorials, flower bouquets, potted plants, food and sympathy cards, a donation has been made to the Greenview Cemetery Fund. Mom was the secretary/treasurer of Greenview for many years, so we’re sure a donation in her name would make her smile in pride. Our family joins you all in saying “Goodbye” to our mom, Vesta. She has finally joined Dad and hopefully he takes time from playing his saxophone to dance with her in Heaven. – Sharon, Janice and Families

Helpful Tips for Writing Classified Ads Which Get Results! Be Thorough
Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.
Steer Clear of Abbreviations
Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.
Be Honest
Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.
State Your Price
The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.
Be Accessible
Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.
Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Mustangs leave AJHL By Murray Green
The Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) board of governors has approved a request from the Calgary Mustangs to take a one-year leave of absence for the 2019-20 season. The Mustangs will use the year to secure a sustainable future for the franchise either in Calgary, or through a relocation. A decision regarding the current team roster will be finalized at the 2019 AJHL annual general meeting on Saturday, May 25. Likely, each existing team would draft a player to keep them
playing the game for next season. Under Hockey Canada regulations, all player movement was restricted from Jan. 10 to June 3. The board approved a new league schedule format, which will be temporarily implemented for the 2019-20 season. The league will reduce its regular season schedule from 60 games to 58 games with the eightteam north division playing two games versus each team in the south division, two games at AJHL Showcase and six games versus each team within the north division.

In 2008 he, along with wife Dorothee and their three children (at the time), made the decision to live and work in Canada. Upon arrival came a series of life changes: another child, a move to New Norway, a board member position at church plus licensing as a professional residential, commercial and agricultural real estate agent. Most recently, Sascha has been preparing for an active role as volunteer chaplain in Maskwacis. This past six years he has worked hard, providing professional service with another local real estate company. As of last week, Sascha has transferred his listings to represent clients out of Central Agencies Realty. In his first days at his new desk he has enjoyed a warm welcome and the professional and a busy environment. Help us welcome Sascha!
