Celebrating Canada!

Camrose resident, 13-year-old Emmanuel Pastolero, shows off his Philippine heritage with a flag painted on his hand, and his new Canadian home with a maple leaf on his cheek to honour Canada Day on July 1. Camrose artist Nikayla Hovde painted his face and will be available to paint faces on Canada Day at the Camrose and District Centennial Museum. Emmanuel has lived in Camrose for two years. This year's Canada Day will honour what it means to live in this country by celebrating diversity and inclusivity.

Crossfire earn silver medals By Murray Green

The Camrose Crossfire U10 girls softball team reached the finals of the Red Deer Rage tournament and came home with silver medals on June 1 and 2. Camrose played five games, losing in the final to Lloydminster, a team they lost to earlier in the tourney. The Crossfire beat Ponoka 14-10 in the first game and then won 20-12

over the host Red Deer squad. Camrose lost 14-7 to Lloydminster and then defeated Red Deer 18-5 to advance to the final. However, it meant another contest against the powerful Lloydminster team. Lloydminster won 20-9 in the final, but the Crossfire took home silver medals for their efforts. The Crossfire attended the Buck Schrader tour-

nament in Edmonton on May 25 and 26 and also advanced to a final. “We won our first game against the Cold Lake Wildcats 11-2, lost game two against Beaumont Hart Blitz 10-7, won our third game against St. Albert Hozack Angels 12-7 and then lost the B final to Beaumont St. Andre-Brady Blitz 9-8,” said Melissa Riopel, Crossfire manager.

Railway station line-up By Lori Larsen

This summer, take a rail trip down memory lane by paying a visit to the Camrose Heritage Railway Station and Park. On July 6 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., the Station will be honouring the rich Scandinavian culture of Camrose and surrounding area with a Tribute to Scandinavian Settlers. “The focus will be on the history of Daryl Olson’s family,” said Station director Glenys Smith. At 2 p.m., Daryl will be bringing history alive through his own interpretation of the Olson family’s story. Displays will be set up throughout the museum and grounds chronicling early settlement of Norwegian and Swedish Settlers, including the Immigration Display Room on the upper level of the Station. At 1 p.m., Marie Dreger will be doing a rose malling demonstration and at 3 p.m., tap along to the amazing fiddle playing of Alfie Myhre, as he plucks out tunes on an old time family fiddle. “A light lunch will be available for purchase in the Tea Room,” said Station managing director Norm Prestage. The delicious fare includes meatballs, rice, cabbage, cheese, lefse and an apple dessert. On July 10, the Station is once again hosting Station Garden Tours with Victorian dessert and tea. This is your opportunity to not only walk among and explore the many beautiful gardens throughout the grounds, but to learn from an experienced organic gardener. After the tour, sit and relax in the vintage ambience of the King George Room while enjoying a cup of tea and traditional dessert. Tour times are 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. and are by advanced reservation only. Get ready to step back to the 1920s on July 13 during the ever popular Summer Garden Party held from 1 until 5 p.m. Dance the Charleston to the beat of the Station Swing Band. “We really want to encourage people to come out in costume and get into the spirit of the music and the day,” said Smith. On August 18 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., spend time with family and friends at the Meeting Creek Railway Station and Linear Park during the Canadian Northern Railway Family Day event. This is a new event this year and should be a fun-filled day for people of all ages. “There is going to be horsedrawn interpretive wagon rides down the Canadian Northern abandoned rail line,” said Prestage. “Guided tours of the 1913 Station

and 1917 elevators will also be available.” Come learn about the important role the rail played in the history of Camrose and surrounding area by taking a ride on a track motor car of the Alberta Prairie mini-train. At 11 a.m., stroll along on a guided tour along the Alberta East Central Natural Linear Parks to Edberg (4 km round trip). Examine the flora, grasslands and chance the siting of a prairie bird. In conjunction with the Battle River Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards, Year of the Grouse event hosted in the Battle River area in September of this year, information will be available on the grouse and how you can help preserve its existence. Keep the children entertained with fun activities including sack or three-legged races, walking on stilts and stories and songs at the gazebo by the Station at 2 p.m. Barbecued hotdogs and hamburgers, homemade desserts and beverages will be available for purchase at the community hall where you can stomp your feet to some old fashioned memorable tunes. Spend Family Day at Meeting Creek, meeting and visiting with old and new friends, enjoying family and recalling history. Not only can you take in the scheduled events, but find some time to drop into the Camrose Heritage Railway Stations and Park (4407-47 Avenue) during regular season hours, Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Walk through several beautiful gardens, relish the variety of flowers and listen for songbirds. New to the Station this year is a community herb garden planted in the trough on the south side of the grounds in front of the Victory Garden. Anyone is invited to help themselves to a variety of organically grown herbs to add a little fresh taste to your meal. The Station kindly asks that anyone taking advantage of this generous giving, be mindful of other users and treat the garden with respect so it can be enjoyed by many. The White Elephant Gift Shop has many items for sale for those one-of-akind gift ideas. Throughout July and August, the Tea Room is open for desserts and refreshments Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. For more information, contact the Station through email at canadian northern@telus.net, visit the website at www.canadian northern.ca or telephone 780-672-3099.

A Special School Michaela Gibson Girl Guides learned about sewing at the rally. Submitted

Hundreds of members of Girl Guides of Canada from Parkland Area met in Innisfail May 11 for a funfilled day. The theme of this year’s rally was Guiding In Our Backyard and was attended by approximately 700 girls and Guiders of all ages, from five-year-old Sparks to Trefoil members who have been involved in Guiding for 50-plus years. Special guests were deputy Alberta council commissioner Laurie McIntosh and Innisfail town councillor Jean Barclay. Sparks, Brownies and Guides participated in five different centres: outdoor games, crafts, a service project (making quilts for Ronald McDonald House and Central Alberta Humane Society), song and dance and gardening. The older girls, Pathfinders and Rangers (aged 13 to 18), had their own unique program including learning calligraphy and making inspirational signs, designing and writing postcards to another participant and having a Dutch Blitz competition. Parkland Area is comprised of eight districts in Central Alberta from Camrose in the north, to Delacour in the south, and from Coronation in the east, to the Banff and Jasper National Park borders. This was only one location hosting a rally this day, similar events were held across the Alberta, Northwest Territories and Yukon (ANY) council. Guiding is thriving in Parkland Area, there are currently 1,341 registered girl members and 311 adult members. They are always looking to increase our membership, if this is something you or a girl you may know might be interested in, go to www. girlguides.ca for more information.

Indigenous Day dance of traditions Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster In a display of culture and colour, dance and tradition, Camrose and area residents, including many school children, were treated to a demonstration by a local group of Indigenous dancers on June 20, the day prior to National Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Over 850 guests were entertained by stories told both verbally and through dance during the 10 a.m. show which was moved indoors to the Augustana gymnasium, due to unsettled weather conditions.

Biking, part two: The Crash By Laurel Nadon

A really important part of learning to ride a bike is learning how to properly use the brakes. Last month, I wrote about the excitement of my five-yearold learning to ride without training wheels. Just a few weeks later, he had an epic crash at Mirror Lake. There is a lot that parents do to keep their children safe, but sometimes accidents just happen. The week before, I had biked around the lake with my youngest along with a friend and her five-year-old. We had a great time, so one sunny Sunday afternoon, I suggested that our family go for our first family bike around Mirror Lake (with everyone moving under their own power) and then get an ice cream cone to celebrate. Great idea, right? This time, however, the lake was packed with people enjoying the nice weather. And my little one had his brother and sister to keep up with. We came to the paved circle where the Mirror Lake Express Train turns around. He went around once, then twice, picking up momentum. As he attempted to make the circle the third time, he didn’t quite make the turn and instead shot off the pathway. Without attempting to brake, he rode right into the low branch of a spruce tree, the branch hitting his helmet and knocking him off his bike. He started screaming, and my eight-year-old noticed he was bleeding. (Warning: graphic content ahead.) I produced a band-aid from my backpack and as I was handing it to my husband, I realized that a branch had pierced my son’s earlobe and cut right through and down. Our wounded guy seemed surprised when we pulled up at emergency, because after all, he already had a band-aid on. Four stitches and some glue later, we got picked up at the hospital by our family. His only concern was that the doctor hadn’t put a band-aid on the scrapes on his upper arm. He had no idea (thankfully) what rough shape his ear had been in because he couldn’t see it. At supper that night, we were already joking about the accident, relieved that he wasn’t hurt worse. The ear lobe is probably the best place to tear on your body, I would think. We asked him, “So where did that tree come from?” as the doctor had. We realized that we had never had those ice cream cones. Precisely 17 days later, we were back at the emergency department, this time for our eight-year-old. Fifteen minutes into sports day, while playing freeze tag in the gym, he collided with another student. My son’s lower nostril was torn right through by the other child’s tooth. Off we went to emergency where the staff were once again professional, kind and efficient. This time he just needed some glue. The doctor even removed the glue from my five-year-old’s ear, so she must have thought we were really a mess. (My son ended up missing the day of school entirely and lamented that sports day is The Funnest Day of School and he couldn’t believe that he missed it.) As we left the hospital, my son commented that now it was his sister’s turn. No, no. Two trips to emergency in one month per family is more than enough. At this stage, we have gotten past early childhood scares like SIDS and choking on hot dogs. Now I just need them to survive to adulthood. Oh sure, I also want them to have integrity (I like to explain this word to them as doing the right thing even when no one is watching), a sense of humour, kindness and to love God, but ultimately, the main goal is to see them to adulthood. As Gary Thomas said in his book Sacred Parenting, “If it was going to be easy to raise kids, it never would have started with something called labour.” The bike crash has added one more thing to my list of what I have learned from having children: -dogs and bees can sense if you are afraid of them -there’s never enough of the same kind of toy -10 years go by incredibly fast -spending time in nature is the best way to connect -sometimes the laundry has to wait And the latest addition: always eat your ice cream before a bike ride, because you never know what’s going to happen!

When life hands you lemons (and even if it doesn’t)…

“When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.” Remember that? Last Saturday, about 30 Camrose children took a different approach: “Get lemons and make opportunities.” It was Lemonade Day, when participating schoolaged children set up lemonade stands in hundreds of locations in Canada, United States, Bermuda and South Africa. At mentoring sessions, they learned to set a business goal, make a plan and put it into action. For children, an amazing opportunity to learn. For their mentors (mostly parents), an opportunity to do something together. Turning business ideas into reality: hands-on learning. Camrose’s Lemonade Day was hosted by East Central Alberta Community Futures, whose mandate is to help people in rural communities turn business ideas into reality. Everything about Lemonade Day excites Louise Jones, a Community Futures representative in Camrose. She did not curb her enthusiasm! It’s not just her. Lemonade Day seemed to light up everyone who heard about it. One local dad was so impressed that he paid for a full page Booster ad that listed all the participating children and the locations of their lemonade stands. I asked what it was about Lemonade Day that so impressed him. He said, “I’m impressed by experiential learning–the opportunity for children to learn about business hands-on in a real-life setting.” He was also impressed that Lemonade Day teaches not only business and money skills, but also social responsibility. Children were encouraged to contribute part of their profits to a local organization. What most excited Louise is that Lemonade Day taught children to set goals and figure out how to achieve them. During mentoring sessions, they set a business goal and created a budget. How will they get money for supplies? They may need to find an investor. The investor may charge interest (Interest? New concept. One of the children said, “that’s cheating”). What will their lemonade stand look like? Where will it be? They needed to negotiate with the location and pay a space rental fee. They signed agreements–for example, to follow Alberta Health regulations about sanitation and food safety. How much of their profit will they spend on something for themselves? How much will they save? How much will they share with a community project? And what did they learn? On this very evening (June 25), children and their mentors are talking about what they learned and what they’d do differently next time. Louise is gratified by community sponsors and supporters. “The City of Camrose bought in right away,” she said. “So did local businesses.” The City agreed to set up special business licenses. Yes, children had to go to City Hall and purchase a business license ($1). The City created a map identifying Lemonade Stand locations. Mayor Norm Mayer said “yes” to the audacious 10-year-old entrepreneur who asked him to be at a ribbon-cutting for her lemonade stand’s grand opening. Eighteen local businesses and organizations provided outdoor space for lemonade stands (rental $1). The Camrose Booster featured Lemonade Day on last week’s front page, and on the Camrose Now! app posted turn-by-turn instructions for all lemonade stands. New Country 98.1 recorded 30-second spots for children to promote their stands. Not just business skills, but life skills. In 2007, Houston entrepreneurs Michael and Lisa Holthouse launched Lemonade Day. The mission: to encourage youth to become business leaders, social advocates, community volunteers and forward-thinking citizens of tomorrow. When asked, “What’s the one thing you’re most excited about with Lemonade Day?” a local boy replied, “I get to make a business and can buy things for myself with my own money from the profits!” One of the most important things children learn is that they can overcome challenges. Something one Camrose girl wanted to do wasn’t possible because of Alberta Health regulations. Her mentors asked the mind-opening question, “How can we work around this? What could you do instead?” She figured it out. Good question. Good learning for all of us. ***

I’d love to hear from you! If you have comments about this column or suggestions for future topics, send a note to Bonnie@BonnieHutchinson.com. I’ll happily reply within one business day.

We thank you for your interest in this feature and encourage your comments. Bill 7

In a recent letter to the editor, the writer expressed hope that Bill 7, by allowing communities to lower taxes to attract business, could be used by Camrose to stimulate the local economy. The common perception is that lower taxes are good for an economy, but the evidence does not always support that. Alabama, with zero business tax, no minimum wage and very low income tax, has a weak economy and widespread poverty. In contrast, Sweden with high taxes, including a carbon tax of $175/ton, has a strong, diversified economy with almost no poverty. If Camrose were to lower business tax, all other communities would be doing the same. They would have to remain competitive and the playing field stays the same. Camrose would have no more advantage than it had before the tax decrease. But the city would collect less business tax revenue. As a result, it would have to raise property taxes to make up for the revenue shortfall, thereby reducing citizens’ spending power and harming the local economy, or lay off workers to reduce costs, thereby reducing the number of consumers and harming the local economy. Bill 7 would give communities more flexibility, and that may be good, but communities lowering business tax would probably hurt everyone. You might want to look up the great business tax cuts made by Kansas in 2012. Instead of stimulating the economy, it was an economic disas-

ter and they had to bring in massive tax increases four years later to prevent economic collapse. Nobody wants that. The reality is that taxes are complex. It is a challenge getting levels right. In a healthy democracy, citizens need to be involved in thoughtful, fact-based discussions about many issues, including taxes. Rob Hill, Camrose Indigenous inquiry

Some white people in Canada are upset the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women Inquiry (MMIWI) final report used the term genocide. One of them is conservative leader, Andrew Scheer. He said it isn’t, he doesn’t know what it is, but he says it isn’t that. What would you call stealing children (sometimes for seven generations) and putting them into churchrun residential schools? (Think about that. Seriously, right now think of a stranger outside of your culture and language taking your children miles away to a “school” for months at a time. A school where abuse, torture and rape were commonplace. Where the goal is to “drive the savage out of them”. The children are taught their language and culture are garbage.) All those kids came out messed up, likely with PTSD, anxiety and depression. When they return, they aren’t the same. The worst part is you know exactly what is waiting for your kids there. When you were a kid, they took you away too. These schools were

COMMAND CHANGE

still operating in the 1970s. Over 150,000 children went through those schools for 160 years, right here in Canada. What was done by white Canadians and colonialists? Do you wonder why you see First Nations people living in poverty? Struggling with addictions? Living in dysfunctional families? I’ll bet none of us would do any better. There is a reason these are huge problems for Indigenous people and, of course, who suffers the most? Women and girls. If that isn’t genocide, I don’t know what is. Maybe our government and churches didn’t pull a trigger or wield a machete … but I honestly think those government and church leaders were just hoping they would kill each other. Commit suicide, or drink themselves to death over the pain. If the MMIWI is going to mean anything at all, I think we need to stand up to people who try and diminish this and tell them how wrong that is. It only adds another grievous insult to a terrible wound. I hope you change how you see First Nations people. Look at what they’ve endured. Reach out to them. Kill the stereotype of “just another drunk Indian”. Yeah, that sentence isn’t politically correct, but you’ve heard people talk that way. I certainly have. Challenge those words when you hear them. I think genocide is exactly the correct term. I just hope they don’t judge all of us white people the way that we’ve judged them. Mark Lindberg, formerly of Camrose

The simple reality:

The convenience of zero step entry means independent living, in the comfort of your own home, for many more years.

Enjoy the convenience:

Zero step entry means no stepping (up or down) at your front door, patio door , or garage door. It’s innovative and it’s really functional.

It’s truly innovative:

Our design team can’t take credit for this wonderful attribute. We discovered the popularity designed into high-end adultliving homes in Arizona and Nevada and brought the concept back to our Ironwood Estates development here in Camrose.

We should call it Zero Step and more!

Along with our zero step design, we’ve also incorporated wider entry doors and early mobility features into our current builds.

It’s the perfect addition for your lifestyle:

Our master-planned, adult-living subdivision is perfect for snowbirds, retired and active adults and for individuals or couples desiring a safe, secure, lock it and leave it free-standing home.

Come see our innovation and quality:

We have a showhome (or a lot) with your name on it! You’ll love what we’ve created, with you in mind.

Crossroads Day Program assists seniors to keep active By Murray Green

The Bethany Group assists seniors in the area with a Crossroads Day Program. Members of PROBUS Rotary Club listened to Tena Lansing explain the services offered at the Norsemen Inn on May 21. “The Crossroads Day Program has changed quite a bit over the years. It started in 1986 as a mental health day hospital. The purpose was to help maintain people in their homes and community. Transportation was provided as part of the program,” said Tena, who has been the coordinator since 2009. “Over the years, the funding changed, so the program changed as well. It no longer has funding for mental health. The goal is still to keep people in their own homes, with their loved ones, for as long as possible as a wellness program.” Available in Camrose and Wetaskiwin, the Crossroads Day Program is a service for people in the community who need support and assistance to maintain their independent living situation. “We base our program on social activities. We want people to be active and socialize with others. We are funded for 15 spaces per day for four days

a week. In Wetaskiwin, we have 10 spaces once a week. Our staff to client ratio is five to one, which is a nice ratio to work with people,” added Tena. “We are their social support. We keep physical bodies moving, keep their minds active and we have fun doing it.” Program participants continue to live in their own residence (within Camrose or Wetaskiwin and surrounding areas) and come to the program during the day for a variety of social programs. The program provides a variety of activities that may include daily exercise, current events, discussion sessions, table games, baking and cooking, crafts, music and singing, hand bells, video games and mind joggers. Programs are scheduled from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. “People refer to our silly games. But, each game has a purpose. We play bingo, but you have to pay attention to numbers called, you have to remember the number, use your hands to cover the number and you have to remember the type of game you are playing. All of those help with memory skills to keep up the cognitive skills,” said Tena. Anyone can refer to

the program. If you are receiving Home Care services, the Home Care Case Coordinators are a helpful resource. Referral forms can also be picked up from the Crossroads Day Program coordinator. No fee is charged, unless lunch is required. The Crossroads Day Program is available in Camrose from Monday to Thursday at 4612-53 Street in the Heritage Building. In Wetaskiwin, it is available on Friday at 4501-60 Street in the Peace Hills Lodge. In order to participate in the program, clients must be registered as a Home Care client; be assessed as requiring a type of Wellness Services; be a resident of Alberta; be living in the community or in the process of being discharged home; have and maintain contact with a physician in the community; be motivated to become involved and participate in the program; be able to function in a group and not demonstrate behaviour harmful to themselves or others; not require constant one-to-one supervision and be able to attend on a regular basis. Each potential participant is assessed to identify their needs and to ensure the services being provided

By Murray Green

The Camrose Arts Society’s Creative Arts Program is returning for another funfilled program from July 2 to Aug. 23 at the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre. The program will be offered during the week (except Aug. 5) from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for children from six to 12 years of age. Program coordinators Nikayla Hovde, a University of Alberta graduate in education, and Makenna Bourbonnais will be leading the program this summer that took a few weeks to plan. “I want to become a teacher, so I thought this would be good experience for me,” added Nikayla, who is from Camrose. “I like interacting with children and helping them to learn.” Makenna just moved to Camrose from Edmonton and Nebraska. “I’ve only been here a few months, so I wanted this job because I wanted to get involved in the community. I moved here to finish my last year of high school.” The Creative Arts Program is a great way for children to learn in the summer, not only about the arts, but also the community. “It is a day program with both indoor and outdoor activities. Each day, we have a theme set up. For example, we will have a superheroes theme of Marvel versus DC, so our craft will be based on superheroes of hand mascots and then outdoor games that have a twist of an obstacle course. Instead it will be the Flash game and you have to go super fast because that is what Flash does,” shared Nikayla. The program is based out of the Chuck MacLean Arts Centre, but often uses the facilities close by to add to the experience. “I think it is a good camp for children to be registered in because even though it is through the Arts Society, it is a good mix of crafts, arts, field trips and physical outdoor activities,” added Mckenna. Excursions will include Mirror Lake, Jubilee Park and some field trips such as a visit with the Fire Department. “I really like the Disney theme day because we are making some cool Mickey Mouse ears and some activi-

Foreman’s stellar 37-year policing career By Lori Larsen

An amazing 37-year career in policing does not go unnoticed and, for Camrosians, the announcement of retirement by Camrose Police Service (CPS) Deputy Chief Lee Foreman is bittersweet. Deserving of a new path in life that offers him a little less stress and more time to enjoy family and recreational activities, his dedication to, not only the policing industry, but Camrose Police Service and the community, will be missed as he officially hangs up his badge on June 30. At the young and somewhat impressionable age of 19, Lee joined the Camrose Police Service after having successfully completed the Policing (now Criminal Justice) program at Lethbridge Community College. Born in Saskatchewan then moved and raised in Medicine Hat, Lee, like many young men nearing graduation from high school, was trying to identify what career path would best suit his interests. “I wanted to do something that wasn’t 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the same thing day in and day out,” said Lee. “I really like the outdoors and interacting with and helping people.” Policing seemed like a natural fit. In between his first and second year of college, he worked with Lethbridge Police Service as a Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP) student then, after graduation, worked with Medicine Hat Police Service for four months. Because neither of those agencies were actively recruiting, Lee applied to other agencies throughout Alberta, receiving an invitation from CPS Chief Duff Franklin (at the time), for an interview. “The rest is history,” smiled Lee. With CPS celebrating its 63rd year as a police service in July, Lee will be the longest serving sworn member, having this year completed 37 years, over half of the length of the service itself.

rected the plain clothes section as a one-member unit, then back to patrol as sergeant.” He then moved into the criminal investigations section (now major crimes unit) on the agreement that he would not be the only member in the section. “I went from there to working with former Sergeant Greg Corbett in an administrative support role looking after recruiting,” which Lee said was one of the highlights of his career. “I just loved it. I met a lot of good people.” From there he moved to the role of inspector, looking after administrative and operational. “That’s where I lost a lot of my hair,” he laughed, “Changing hats all the time (figuratively speaking). In a service our size, there are a lot of functions that need to be shared with one role.” From that position, he was promoted to deputy chief. After Chief Darrell Kambeitz retired, Lee stepped into the role of acting chief, successfully leading the membership until Chief Mark Neufeld came into position. A recent shift in leadership, with Chief Neufeld leaving for the Calgary Police Service, has Lee once again taking over the reigns to guide the service until his retirement on June 30. Moving ahead

With a bit of apprehension, Lee recognized it was time to change lanes from a long and dutiful career with CPS. “I’m not in a hurry to leave, to be honest, but policing is going through some further changes. I feel I can move on. The organization is very stable, there are a lot of very good people with Lori Larsen, Camrose Booster 19 senior constables, the organization Deputy Chief Lee Foreman can continue on seamlessly.” But true to his professional nature Despite it being a simpler time, there were and strong set of work ethics, he felt a responsistill challenges, most of which Lee recalls bility to stay until he felt were equipment related. “There was the service was in a solid only one computer, the CPIC Canadian et involved position. “As police officers, we are responsible to hold people accountable, but it’s important to treat people the way you would want to be treated if you made that same mistake.” And people of this community who know Lee Foreman know that he does care for this community. While he will be missed in his position within the Camrose Police Service, he will still be deeply appreciated as a valuable member of this community. Lee also stated how vital it is for police officers to help the youth of the community to see and reach their potential. “Recognize their capabilities. It keeps you young, too,” he warmly smiled. With a final piece of advice, Deputy Chief Foreman said it is imperative that young officers have a healthy and strong relationship with the police family, but it is equally important to have friends outside of policing to stay in touch with other aspects of life.

Final notes

A police officer is only as good as the notes he/she takes and the impressions he/she makes and Lee has excelled at both. “There were a lot of times I would ask myself ‘Why are you still doing this?’ We are constantly trying to prevent crime from happening, especially the scamming that is occurring, and sometimes it would get frustrating when we saw people still being victimized, but it is important to continue educating our community to help them prevent themselves from becoming a victim.” Lee related an incident from the past where he and other officers were called to a concert involving a big group of “rowdy” attendees who started a bonfire. The fire department had to be called in to put a damper on the party, so to speak. “It was one of those situations where you didn’t know which way the crowd would tip. I have a fairly loud voice when I need to, so I walked out in the middle of this situation and said, ‘That was a heck of a great job by the fire department. Let’s have a round of applause for them.’ The tension quickly dissipated as the crowd applauded the fire department and then began to disburse.”

Lee concluded that putting a positive spin on things more often than not has much better results. Lee summed up the world of policing as he has experienced it. “People develop a misunderstanding of what policing is really about because of what they see on television. The reality is that some cases take a long time. I was a primary investigator on this one case from December 2001 that is still open,

regarding an abduction and sexual assault. I was truly hoping it would be resolved before I retired.” He is still holding out hope that it will be solved, but in the event it isn’t, there is little doubt he will make inquiries even once he is retired from CPS. And that speaks volumes of Deputy Chief Foreman and his sincere dedication to the industry, the community and its residents.

Answers on dementia

By Lori Larsen

For anyone finding themselves caring for aging parents, family members or friends with either dementia or Alzheimer’s, help is simply a telephone call away. Once a diagnosis of dementia has been made, patients, families and caregivers are often fraught with questions. A dementia nurse service is available to callers of Health Link. The Dementia Advice Line aims to respond to the immediate needs of persons with dementia living in community settings or their care partners, who might need health-related advice, education, information on community resources and emotional support. “One of the most significant benefits of the Dementia Advice Line through Health Link, is that it can connect all Albertans with dementia-related advice,” said Seniors and Emergency Strategic Clinical Networks senior provincial director, Scott Fielding. “As long as the person can access a telephone, they can receive advice from a registered nurse who has advanced dementia care experience and knowledge.” The service is available to you by phoning Health Link 24/7, at 811.

Children learn about science and culture, while having fun. “We encourage people to register early, because we can only fit in so many children in a day,” she added. “We close the registrations at 35 children for a day.” Advance registration is important to plan for the day full of activities. “Discounts are available for families if there are more than one sibling registered,” said Makenna. As soon as the registration goes over 20 children, they call for additional staff to help to ensure each child receives assistance if they need it. Sometimes volunteers help as well. “We do accept drop-ins between 8:15 and 9 a.m. if we are not full,” continued Nikayla. “I’ve learned, being new to this community, that this community is very giving and supportive of the program and are willing to help us. We’ve had so many people donate craft supplies to us, which keeps the cost down for the parents,”

Local cruisers to shine on Main Street By Murray Green

The Camrose Cruisers car club will be hosting its annual show and shine on Main Street, June 29. Camrose Cruisers Show ‘n’ Shine event is scheduled for downtown, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at noon. There will be trophies awarded for the best in each class. People can view the vintage automobiles from 1 to 5 p.m. “We have been holding a car show for more than 20 years. It is a family event. The cars come from all over, but mostly from our area,” said Ken Mah, one of the organizers. “We get about 150 cars and it is a good way for people to spend some time during the long weekend.” You can view the entries and talk to the owners about their vehicle during the show. “We have a good variety of vehicles, but most of them are vintage. People love cars. They enjoy the vehicles and the history behind them. It is nice to see the young people appreciate the vintage cars. That way the car shows and appreciation for history won’t die off and we hope that it carries on,” shared Ken. “It is nice to see the appreciation pass on from one generation to another and that the vehicles continue to be kept up.” After all the awards have been presented for the Show ‘n’ Shine, there will be a Main Street cruise starting at 6 p.m. with cars

lining up on 48 Street and 51 Avenue. Only show quality cars should be in the cruise for the first hour. “It is one thing to see the cars sitting on the street. But the cruise allows people to stay in one place and watch the cars drive by. The idea of seeing the cars in motion is good. It is a parade atmosphere,” explained Ken. “We give out 19 tro-

DRIVE-IN MOVIE

A drive-in movie will happen after dark at the Recreation Centre. There will be popcorn and refreshments available for purchase at the concession booth on site. This year’s movie will be The Blob (1958) starring Steve McQueen (in his starring feature film debut, as Steven McQueen) and Aneta Corsaut and co-stars Earl Rowe and Olin Howland. Teens are kissing at a Lovers’ Lane when they see a meteorite crash beyond the next hill. An old man (Olin Howland) living nearby finds it first. When he pokes the meteorite with a stick, it breaks open, and a small jelly-like globule inside attaches itself to his hand. Steve and Jane take him to Doctor Hallen (Stephen Chase). They witness the doctor trying to get out the window with the creature on his head. They go to the police station and return with Lieutenant Dave (Earl Rowe) and Sergeant Bert (John Benson). There is no sign of its victims, and Bert dismisses Steve’s story as a teenage prank. Steve and Jane are taken home by their parents, but they later sneak out.

phies. The participants in the show who have entries are the ones who vote for the awards. They are picked by the people who know about cars.” If the day is rained out, the show will be moved to July 6. Racing dates

The 100-footer event has been replaced with the eighth-mile race. This year will mark the fifth year of the eighth-mile drag racing event at Forestburg. A brand new concrete launch pad and fresh tarmac is in place for the racers. It has been moved to new dates, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. It will take place at the Forestburg Airport with major renovations planned at the track. Qualifying runs will determine vehicle classes. All cars will participate in at least two qualifying runs to determine their respective class. The qualifying runs are not based on reaction time. It will involve two cars racing side by side. “It’s as much about skill as it is about raw horse-

power,” said Ken Mah, one of the organizers. There will be two or three classes based on participation and categorized by speed. Elimination and final runs will be based with reaction time. The winners cannot have a faster time than their qualify-

ing times. Doing so would be a disqualification. The first day will be noncompetitive racing with action from 12:30 to 4 p.m., depending on participation. One passenger is allowed, but helmets are required. The second day will be competitive with eliminations.

Type 2 Diabetes By Lori Larsen

Living with Type 2 diabetes is challenging, but as a result of continued research and refined knowledge, the challenge can be manageable. Alberta Health Services (AHS) diabetes educator with the Diabetes, Obesity and Nutrition Strategic Clinical Network at Explaining Leta Philp, explains. “Cells need sugar. Insulin is like a little key that opens up cell doors to let sugar in. When you have Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin, or the cell doors resist opening, or both. Cells starve even though sugar is available in the surrounding blood.” Rates of Type 2 diabetes are rising faster in Alberta than anywhere else in Canada. More than 300,000 Albertans have the disease. The following are some recommended tips provided by AHS, for catching Type 2 diabetes early and learning to live with it well.

Know the signs

Common signs include frequent urination, thirst and/or hunger. Other signs include weight loss, a dry mouth, urinary tract infections, blurry vision and numbness or tingling in fingers and toes. Experts recommend an annual check for elevated blood sugar after age 40, when the risk of developing diabetes rises. Gauge your risk

Older people with a family history of the disease and/or non-Caucasian roots are at higher risk of having Type 2 diabetes. So are women who had gestational diabetes while pregnant. Other risks include being overweight, obese and/or inactive. Live healthy

Find meal planning, exercise and medication that work for you. Set S.M.A.R.T. goals – specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely. Eat regularly spaced, balanced meals with lots of vegetables and fibre, some protein and healthy fat, complex carbohydrates and very little added sugar. Avoid fruit juice, pop and sport drinks. If you do overindulge on a special occasion, then counteract it by doing some exercise, such as walking. Monitor your health

Besides blood sugar, watch for elevated blood pressure, escalating anxiety, reduced kidney function, increased cholesterol and nerve damage in eyes and feet.

We, the family of

Irvin Herbert Frank …would like to say thank you to those who joined us in saying farewell to our husband, father and grandfather. Rev. Brian Hunter shared a beautiful memorial service as we all said our goodbyes. Thank you, Brian, for your leadership, understanding and compassion. Thanks to Grant Sikstrom for your tribute to Irvin and your kind contributions to our family. Thank you to Colin Yuha and the staff of Burgar Funeral Home for all you did to make the service at CityLights Church and the graveside so meaningful. We also appreciate all your advice, leadership and compassion in going above and beyond when carrying out all your responsibilities. Colin, you were outstanding! Thank you to the Mennonite Choir for the beautiful musical selections. Thank you to the ladies of the CityLights Church for the lovely lunch you provided after the service. Thank you to Bea’s Blooms for the amazing flowers that graced the service. In lieu of thank you cards for the many memorials, flower bouquets, potted plants, food and sympathy cards, a donation has been made to the Edberg Lakeview Cemetery. Our family joins you all in saying goodbye to Pat’s husband, our father and grandfather. – Pat and family In remembrance of

Robert James Nelson who passed away on December 13, 2018 at the age of 55 I’m Free Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free. I’m following the path God has laid, you see. I took His hand when I heard His call. I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love, to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I found the peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joys. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, O yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, My life’s been full, I savoured much. Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your hearts and peace to thee. God wanted me now, He set me free. Happy 56th Birthday, Robbie, you are sadly missed so much. Love you. – Your Mom Rosalyn, brother Roger, sister Ronene, nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins

March 7, 1944 ~ June 16, 2019 Jean Borman was born on March 7, 1944 to Mary and Joseph Schneider. On the afternoon of June 16, 2019, Jean passed away peacefully with family at her side. Jean grew up on the farm near Rosalind, attending school, excelling in athletics, participating in clubs and being part of the farm and family. The lessons learned here and at the McTavish Business College provided Jean with the tools, strength and perseverance to start an amazing journey. This incredible woman became the love of Eldon Borman. They married on August 12, 1964. Together, they built their farm. Working together was part of the incredible love they had for each other. Jean was never afraid of hard work or learning something new; she was a very strong woman, which was evident in every aspect of her life. Beyond her efforts in the dairy and grain operations, she regularly worked just as hard off the farm. In the last part of her career, she was proud to be active in many capacities within the St. Francis Xavier parish and St. Mary’s Hospital. Jean enjoyed family, friends, laughter and being active. She intertwined these into hers and Eldon’s life. Her strength, happiness and positive personality affected everyone involved in her life. Joy filled her whenever the grandchildren were around or shared their experiences. She will always be lovingly remembered by her loving husband, Eldon; sons Craig (Sandra) and Dave (Isleta); grandchildren Ryan, Dylan, Brynn, Aaron and Amy; and sister Joan (John) Stang. She was predeceased by her parents; sister Kay; brothers Keith, Kenneth and Jerry. A Funeral Mass was held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2019 from St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, 3605-50 Street, Camrose with Father Joseph Jacobson as celebrant. Inurnment has taken place in the Camrose Valleyview Cemetery. If family and friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jean’s memory may be made to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, the Multiple Sclerosis Society or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. In loving memory of

Brian Lenard Gallaugher January 8, 1950 ~ June 25, 2018 Meet You at the Gate A beautiful garden now stands alone, Missing the one who nurtured it, But now he is gone. His flowers still bloom, and the sun still shines, but the rain is like teardrops for the ones left behind. The weeds lay waiting to take the garden’s beauty away, But the beautiful memories of its keeper are in our hearts to stay. He loved every flower, even some that were weeds, So much love he would plant with each little seed. But just like his flowers, he was part of God’s plan, So when it was his time, God reached down His hand. He looked through the garden, searching for the best. That’s when he found Brian, it was his time to rest. It was hard for those who loved him to just let him go. But God had a spot in His garden that needed a gentle soul. So when you start missing Brian, remember, if you just wait, When God has a spot in His garden, he’ll meet you at the gate. Lovingly remembered and missed by Lorraine and family

In the summer of 1972, they took over the Olson family farm where she lived until her passing. On the farm, she raised her two children Cody and Becky and always welcomed her nieces and nephews for many extended stays. Jean’s love of horses kept both her and Gordon busy. She loved gymkhana and her driving teams especially. Jean enjoyed many trips with Gordon in their hot rods in her later years. Jean loved to tease her grandkids and her nieces and nephews. She left a great impression and so many pleasant memories for them all to cherish in the years to come. Jean loved and looked forward to her trips to Waterton with her close friends Malcom and Lynn Lyseng and family. She masterminded a beautiful Koi fish pond and took great pride in her yard. She was also very proud of her three grandchildren in everything they did. Jean will be greatly missed by all her friends and family. She was an excellent listener and bestowed sound and wise advice for whatever problem there might be. But our all-time favourite quote from her will always be, “Sit down, shut up and hang on”. In keeping with Jean’s wishes, no formal service will be held. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in Jean’s memory may be made to STARS or to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Sure you want your ad to stand out from the rest, but don’t skimp on the sort of information that sells. The item’s condition, size, age, brand name, and colour are some of the basics readers want to know. Without them, your ad may be overlooked.

Steer Clear of Abbreviations

Okay, so you want to include all the important basics. Don’t use strange abbreviations because our ads are designed to spell all the important details. Besides, you are not paying by the line, but by the word, so there is really no need to abbreviate.

Be Honest

Exaggerating your item’s finer points may bring in a lot of responses, but a buyer who’s misled won’t appreciate it and will take his business somewhere else.

State Your Price

The cost of an item is one of the most important concerns of want ad readers. Ads showing prices are ones which get results. Giving a price also serves to “weed out” those buyers not in your price range.

Be Accessible

Including a telephone number or address puts you in touch with potential buyers. Be sure to state the hours you can be reached: a caller who can’t get through the first time often won’t call again.

Don’t hesitate to call us with any questions or problems you may have regarding advertising. Our professionally trained sales staff know the ropes, and would be happy to pass their know-how on to you. That’s why we’re here to help you get the results you deserve.

Harrison wins Alberta Open golf By Murray Green

Camrose golfer Andrew Harrison beat most of the top professionals at the annual Alberta Open at Trestle Creek on June 14 to 16. As an amateur (he is currently golfing for the University of BC Thunderbirds) he scored lower than the best golfers in this province. He won by six shots over the closet competitor. Andrew, 22, scored 19 birdies during the three-round tournament for a 14-under 202 total. He outlasted his older brother Michael, who stayed close the first two days before finishing seventh. Andrew was the first amateur since 2016 to win the Alberta Open. However, the $5,000 prize went to Airdrie’s Riley Fleming who shot an eight-under, and won over Matthew Codd of Red Deer in a playoff. Andrew also helped UBC win the university title in a playoff at the Canadian University/College Championship.

they want to go is back to see their tree. They get very involved in the planting of the tree.” When the idea was presented, the Rotary Club approached the City of Camrose, specifically the Parks department, inquiring as to whether or not the City could assist with the idea. The City jumped at the opportunity and offered the location at the bottom of the ski hill in Stoney Creek. “All of a sudden it became much more that what I had envisioned,” smiled Rostad. “The name (Peace Path) is very apt, because part of the Rotary Youth Exchange mandate is to promote peace and this location is also (the Peace Path) a very peaceful place.” “One of the roles of the Rotary Youth Exchange is to impact world peace one student at a time,” said Phillips. “An underlying philosophy of the Rotary Youth Exchange is that there is a ripple effect when you get to know and interact with people of other cultures and religions.” The trees on the Peace Path have been planted in various stages and by various people including Rotary Club members and, when possible, exchange students themselves, both inbound and outbound. Unfortunately, some of the trees have succumbed to harsh winter and dry spring conditions and have had to be replaced. For the past two years, a dedicated team of Rotarians have gone twice a week to water the trees, desperately trying to ensure they grow to be healthy reminders of the amazing outcomes of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program.
